Summary

The Christian must recognize spiritual life as warfare, trusting Christ as friend while remaining vigilant against the Devil as a personal and cunning enemy. Drawing on Saint John Climacus, the lecture describes three demonic strategies: preventing good deeds, corrupting how they are performed, and inspiring pride after they are completed. Only the Triune God is omnipresent; Satan, angels, the Theotokos, and the saints are created beings whose presence is limited.

By the grace of God, we will continue this evening with these talks, which God has permitted us to give. Many subjects have been discussed from this place during the roughly fifteen days we have been here.

If a person is willing, he can easily find his way again if he has lost it. But if he is unwilling, not even God Himself can help him. Yet if a person is to struggle, certain conditions are necessary. That is, he must possess a certain knowledge, as we were saying in connection with this subject. If a Christian does not believe that he is in a state of war, he will be lost—not to say that he is lost from the outset. The Christian must know that he has a friend, but also an enemy. His friend is Christ, but his enemy is the devil.

If a Christian does not have a correct understanding of the devil, he is already lost. Sadly, many people know nothing about this person, for he is indeed a person: a person with a will, with cunning, capable of attack and defense and sabotage. This is how a person must confront Satan if he does not wish to find himself with him one day in that place of which Christ said, “Depart... to the devil and his angels.” If a person had a correct understanding of the devil, he would value the Church.

He would value the Mysteries, he would value Christ’s commandments, and, in general, everything Christ has established for him and continues to provide. The purpose of all these things is to protect a person from the devil, or to heal him if, knowingly or unknowingly, he has fallen into the devil’s hands. So, as I say, if a person does not have a correct understanding of this enemy, he will certainly live carelessly, as people do, without knowing where he came from, how he came, why he came, or where he now stands; without knowing who his enemies are. Consequently, he neither understands his illness, nor guards himself against it, nor takes any medicine for it. Therefore, this evening, by the grace of the Lord, I would like

to speak about this gentleman who goes by the name of the Devil.

Many people do not believe that he exists; and if I were to say that even some theologians do not, I might not be far from the truth. Of course, they are few; the number of those who do not believe in the existence of Satan as a person is negligible. Yet Christ dealt with him as a person, and the Church also deals with him as a person. We often hear people say that he is merely moral evil, or a negative force. That is not so. Satan is a person, and both Christ and our Church deal with him as a person. If only someone had the patient endurance and goodwill

to stand nearby when the priest reads the exorcisms before baptizing a child, and to listen carefully and follow the entire rite, he would see that the priest is speaking to a person. He addresses someone invisible, someone who exists although we cannot see him, and he wrestles with him until, at the end, he commands him, saying, “Come out”—come out from within. Then a person would understand that something serious is taking place. Something serious surrounds the human person, and even this Baptism, we might say, is not merely the establishment of a godparent relationship, some family connection, some personal advantage, or perhaps even some sin.

Many times, behind such a relationship, such a godparent connection, there are even sins of the flesh. At this point, then, I would like to remind and warn anyone who doubts these things. For I am not teaching what those people taught from their academic chairs. I speak as one who follows the Church. I bring to light what our Church teaches and what we, as Orthodox Christians, accept—things that have been buried and covered over. I simply uncover them; I do nothing else. So I would urge anyone who doubts these things to go and see. There he will witness the scene itself: he will see the gestures, see the priest breathe upon the person, see him perform the exorcism, hear him give commands, and understand that he is dealing with a person.

Or, if he does not wish to go there, let him at least take up the Euchologion and read the service of the catechumenate. There he will see how matters truly stand and whether what I am saying now is true. I repeat: we are dealing with a person. Of course, behind this person and this satanic activity lie the ideas of many people, some of whom go so far as to accuse God Himself. They accuse God of having made Satan, or of having caused all these things. Yet God did not create evil. God did not create Satan as Satan. Then who made him? Where did Satan come from? How did Satan come to be here, tormenting us? For that is how some people see it: they think he torments them. They do not see that he helps them become Saints, because if Satan were removed, there would be no Saints.

If wicked people were removed, there would be no good people, because a good person is revealed as good when the wicked are present alongside him. That is when his goodness becomes evident. If no wicked person existed, what then? How could someone be called good? Evil must be present alongside us for virtue, integrity, and chastity to be revealed. And so, I say, people go so far as to accuse God Himself. They also demand a great deal of information, as though it were their right: “Tell me.” But why should I have to tell you? Glory to God, you know how to read. Why do you not open the Scriptures and learn about the existence of Satan? Why do you not open the Scriptures and see whether God made Satan, and how God deals with the matter of Satan? That is the question. And it costs nothing, if only a person were willing to...

open Holy Scripture. He would see where Satan came from, how long Satan has existed, how Christ deals with him, and, in general, how this person behaves toward man and toward the Christian. So, to guide you into the Scriptures, I will go far back in time. I will go back to about 850 BC, where the manner, so to speak, of Satan’s creation is described—though that is not quite the precise way to put it. In any case, at around 800 BC, we find the Prophet Isaiah describing, in his own way and through the Holy Spirit, the fall of Satan. My dear friends, Satan was an angel. Before he became a dark angel, he was an angel of light.

He was a good angel. Beelzebub, indeed, the leader, was the greatest cherub and beheld God face to face. In chapter 14 Isaiah says the following—I will give it to you in translation: “How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!” Lucifer is the morning star, the brightest star. “How you have fallen, son of the morning! You have been struck down to the earth, you who trampled the nations. You said in your mind, ‘I will ascend into heaven; I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.’” That was how he thought, and because of his pride, instead of finding himself on high,

he found himself below. He alone is to blame. Indeed, in the New Testament there is an epistle by Jude—not Judas Iscariot, but the one called the Brother of the Lord, one of those four brethren. There he speaks specifically about the fall and says that Satan himself abandoned his appointed place. God had placed him in a position of honor, but, because he was free, he misused his freedom—as, sadly, we also do—and found himself in the opposing camp, in darkness. Jude therefore says, in his one and only chapter, verse six: “The angels who sinned, who did not keep their own principality,

but abandoned their proper dwelling, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.” They abandoned it, he says—angels who did not preserve their original state and did not remain in their appointed place, as we have said. They abandoned it themselves. They were not pushed or urged toward evil; they left of their own accord. They found themselves in gloom, in darkness. That is why they are now called angels of darkness, dark angels. God, therefore, did not create them as satans or devils. He had created them as angels; they belonged to the angelic world. Now, when did the fall take place? For we find Satan

already present when God created the first human beings. When God said to the first two people—and especially to Adam—“Work and keep watch,” how are we to understand “keep watch”? Against whom was he to guard himself? Of whom was he to beware? It was not only Adam and his wife; there was a third party. And the day before yesterday, when we spoke about the fall of Eve, we saw how that one appeared deceitfully. We do not know exactly when the fall occurred. We do know, however, that Satan came from the angelic world, and that the angelic world was created before the material world. We have testimony in the Scriptures that when God was making the earth, the stars, and the rest of creation, Satan already existed.

The angels of God, it says, praised Him as He carried out the creation. Therefore, the spiritual world already existed. Job says this in chapter 38. If you read it, you will find it there. The chapter and its treatment of this subject are extensive.

From this we can also estimate his age—how many years he has been around. Approximately how old would you say Satan is according to the Scriptures, not according to scientists? They believe neither in Satan’s existence nor in the true chronology. On the basis of their science, they write down numbers, add zeros, construct new figures, and at other times make them smaller. After speaking of millions of years, some Russians recently have...

They have concluded that the earth is only a hundred thousand years old. That is what they have been saying lately. At one time they add zeros; at another, they erase them. It makes no essential difference. This is not a dogma. Whether it is so or not, a person’s salvation does not depend on knowing how old the earth is.

How old, then? From Holy Scripture we know that man—and I am not speaking about the earth—existed for 5,508 years before Christ. Add the 1,980 years that have passed up to our own day, and we arrive at approximately 7,500 years. We do not know exactly when the fall took place between the creation of the angels and the creation of man, by which time we find that this gentleman had already become what he is. In any case, we are dealing with a person who has some 7,500 years of experience. We are not dealing with some little girl in a miniskirt who thinks she knows everything and slams the door in her mother’s and father’s faces. Nor are we dealing...

with one of today’s young people. We are dealing with Satan, with the devil, with a cunning adversary who has 7,500 years of experience. Anyone who thinks he can escape him by himself—entirely on his own—is being foolish. But when a person remains with the Lord, with Christ, and with grace, he limits Satan’s influence over him and often renders him completely powerless. Yet Satan remains there, close beside the human soul, constantly watching, day and night, for some way—through the hand, the eye, the nous, the sense of touch, the sense of smell, or anything else—to get that person into his grasp and obtain his signature.

He does this for many years, especially with spiritual people. In countless ways he tries to get them into his grasp. According to the Fathers, Satan chiefly uses three methods. They struck me deeply, and I made a note of them so that I could share them with you. This is how he sets his traps for a person: if he does not catch him here, he will catch him farther on; and if not there, then farther on still—somewhere he means to catch him. For Satan sows now in order to reap a hundred thousand years later. Satan is no child, no little girl, nor merely some educated man. Satan is cunning and experienced. He has devoured multitudes; he has devoured wise men, ascetics, patriarchs, and saints. It is difficult for a person to escape him,

unless he does exactly what Christ tells him. For everything Christ says and teaches, and everything Christ established in the Church and left here in this inn, is intended for those who have fallen among thieves. Learn, listen, and read the interpretation of the parable of the Good Samaritan and the man who fell among thieves. From that you will understand the whole matter of Satan. Listen, then, to the three methods Satan uses, according to Saint John Climacus, that Father of nepsis, or watchfulness. In his own words he says: “The demons dig three pits for us.” A pit is a hole in the ground. Three pits, he says, are dug by the demons

to catch us, each at a different stage. “First, they struggle to prevent the good from being done.” First, they try to keep a person from doing good—good toward his neighbor and good toward himself. For it is not enough to do good to your neighbor while wronging yourself: depriving yourself of Confession, Holy Communion, fasting, self-restraint, restraint of the tongue, and the bearing of children. How greatly you wrong yourself in these things! First, then, he says, they try to make things difficult for people and prevent them from doing good, whether for themselves or for others. But if they fail, and the person overcomes this obstacle

and goes forward despite the temptations and suggestions Satan puts before him, then, Saint John says, he does this: “Second, after their first defeat, they strive to keep the deed from being done according to God.” Do it, but not exactly as God desires. For, as you know, Basil the Great says, “The good is not good unless it is done well.” Good, he says, is not good unless it is done rightly. I give, but I give from what I have stolen or gained through injustice. Do you understand? So he tries to ensure that the good you do is not done rightly, as God desires. I do something and then tell everyone about it; I speak of it and make demands: “I will give, but my name must be written there.” Yet the commandment says that your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing. And so, since

you escaped his first trap and are determined to do something good for yourself and for others, he then tries to capture you by planting the thought that the deed need not be done as God desires—pure and unadulterated, without foreign elements mixed into it. If you escape him at this point as well and he still does not catch you, he sets another trap farther down the road. Even when you have done the deed well, he sets yet another trap. Saint John says: “When the thieves fail in this purpose also, then at last they quietly come beside you.” Until now they were obstructing you so that you would not do it, but they failed. Now that you have done it, they come alongside you. “Standing quietly beside our soul, they congratulate us as people who live according to God.”

And he says to you: “If only others were like you! Look at that man: this is his responsibility, yet he does nothing. That one is a clergyman, for example, and does nothing, while you are a layman and you do this. This is something the rich should be doing, yet you go without and still give. Well done! This is exactly what God wants.” And if he succeeds in puffing up your mind even a little...

All these things work in this way. If he manages to raise you even by the thickness of a cigarette paper—and how much height can a cigarette paper give?—if he gets you to stand on that paper and think, even slightly, that others do not do what you have done, that you accomplished something, that you stepped in and did work that belonged to others, or to think, “If only others were like me,” and so forth, then he has caught you there and taken everything away from you. He is cunning, and God alone

is the One who gives a person illumination to see Satan’s traps. If you read the Life of Saint Anthony the Great, you will shudder at Satan’s snares, which that spiritual man could see and therefore guard against. We do not see his traps. If only I had time to give you a talk about logismoi from the right—intrusive thoughts that appear good. In the past I gave six such talks. If you could see Satan’s devices, how he captures us from the right, so that we serve him while he mocks us, you would shudder and become so disgusted that you might despair. Yet unless a person loses confidence in his own cleverness and intelligence, and realizes that he labors in vain—not for himself or for the glory of God, but for the devil—he will never

come to his senses and ask God for strength, grace, and eyes—spiritual eyes. None of the saints ever walked by his own reasoning. “Lead me, O Lord, in the way that I should walk.” “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.” But where is the person who asks the Lord and tells Him to go ahead? Let us not run out in front and merely say, “Go on, my child, and God bless you. Go on, my child, and may God make everything turn out right for you.” When has God ever made things turn out wrongly, that you should wish for Him to make them right? Such thoughts torment us, and they make us victims of the devil. This cunning one does not want to be called “the devil,” the slanderer, and so people use a shortened form of the word instead. I do not know whether you have heard it; many even say, “Go to the devil.” But that shortened form is not his name. His name is the devil.

He wants to cast off the charge contained in that name: that he is the one who slandered God before mankind, saying that God is jealous and envious, and that He will not let you eat from that tree lest you become gods. He does not want that name. Yet Holy Scripture calls him the devil—this Satan, this ancient serpent, is called the devil. Of course, when some people hear about Satan, they say, “It was the snake.” They say that there was a snake there. Yes, but Satan acted through the snake. It was Satan who played that role so deceitfully and brought down the first couple. And in the Apocalypse, in chapter twelve, John writes that this was the ancient serpent, whose name is

the devil. “And the dragon was cast down,” he says in Revelation 12:9, “that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan. He who deceives the whole world was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.” Since Holy Scripture itself says that this Satan, this devil, appeared in the serpent and is the ancient serpent, we cannot offer clever theories or human wisdom. God, then, did not make the devil. God made him an angel. I have told you his age and some of his cunning devices. If there were no devil, I ask you,

there would have been no reason for Christ to come into the world—no reason for Christ to come into the world. Have you ever opened the sacred texts to see what the Scriptures say? If you wish, open the First Catholic Epistle of John, chapter three, verse eight. You will see that Christ came into the world to destroy the works of Satan. This is why He came into the world. Another passage is found in the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter two, verse fourteen. What does it say there? “Since the children”—that is, human beings—“share in flesh and blood,” since they were flesh and blood, “He Himself likewise partook of the same,” though not in precisely the same way, through the will of a man and a woman,

but from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary; nevertheless, “He partook of the same.” Why? “That through His death He might destroy the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver” us from “the fear of bondage,” and so forth. This is why He came: to destroy the devil, who held the power of death. This is why Christ came into the world. Yet even this passes unnoticed. People do not know it. They imagine that Christ came to establish festivals, to create a third holiday season so that we could receive gifts and go on cruises, or to burden women with washing, ironing, and whitewashing the house for the great feasts—Christmas, Pascha, and so forth. No, that is not what this is about. But we shall continue. The very purpose of Christ’s coming into the world, then, proves the existence of Satan.

The existence of Christ’s Church in the world proves the existence of Satan. The Mysteries of the Orthodox Church in the world prove the existence of Satan. I spoke earlier about Baptism. What does Baptism do? Baptism reminds a person that Satan exists; and if he is willing to read those prayers, as I have said, he will see that Satan exists. What happens in the Mystery of metanoia, or repentance, and Confession? The works that Satan accomplished in cooperation with the person are wiped away.

What happens in the blessing of water, the Agiasmos? We bless water, take it, hurry home, and serve Satan with an eviction notice. When you take the Agiasmos home and bless your possessions with a sprig of basil, olive, rosemary, or whatever else, you are doing nothing other than serving Satan with an eviction notice. Of course, many times he does not leave, because the person’s way of life guarantees him permanent residence. Then he does not leave; he has acquired rights over that person. What happens in Holy Unction? What is the Mystery of Holy Unction? What does it do? It heals the works of Satan.

Sweet and bitter water do not flow from the same spring. God cannot be tempted by evil. Illnesses come from Satan; healing comes from God; and medical science, which treats illness, also comes from God. The physician too is from God, as the Wisdom of Sirach says in chapter thirty-eight: “Give the physician his place, for there is need of him.” The Lord created the physician, and the Lord created those medicines. Medical knowledge belongs to God. Do doctors and inventors of medicines create anything? They discover the laws governing the herbs that already exist and make medicine from them. They do not create; they combine things that already exist. Who made those things? Who is their architect? Who is the Creator? It is Christ. He gave scientific knowledge;

He gave understanding; He gives everything and has mercy on His creature. If, then, we examine these Mysteries, we shall see that their purpose is to drive out and wipe away the works of Satan in a person. A person receives the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. Why does he receive this Body and Blood of Christ? For the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Can sins be cleansed without the Body and Blood of Christ? They cannot. They are not washed away with detergents, whether in an automatic or a super-automatic washing machine. Only the Blood of Jesus Christ, in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, cleanses us from every sin. You can therefore see at once why Orthodoxy exists: Orthodoxy alone has the Mysteries, and Orthodoxy alone drives out Satan. This is precisely why it is attacked.

No other so-called church is attacked. Have you heard accusations against the papal church? Have you heard any against the various Protestant groups? Have you heard any against the Jehovah’s Witnesses or other offshoots? No. They are all treated like innocent little birds, like saints. Only we are portrayed as monsters. Only the Orthodox are called sinners. Only Orthodox priests and bishops are surrounded by uproar, slander, and mudslinging. Everyone else in the world is treated as a saint, because the Orthodox Church alone preserves the power and grace given by Christ and drives out Satan. The Orthodox clergy and the Orthodox Mysteries are what drive out Satan and destroy his works. This is precisely why he rages—in the fullest sense of the word—especially against the Church’s ministers, and tries to keep us asleep, so that everything directed against him, everything that destroys

his works and the seed he sows, may either be slandered or remain hidden from people’s eyes. Therefore, let us not blame God for Satan’s existence, let us not question that existence, and let us value the means of healing. If a person now wishes to understand roughly how Satan works, he must first know this: Satan is not omnipresent. For example, at this moment, while we are gathered here, there may be no demon present; or there may be whole regiments of demons; or there may be only one. But the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are present. Omnipresence is an attribute of the Triune Godhead alone.

Our Most Holy Theotokos may not be here at this moment, and the Holy Unmercenary Healers may not be here at this moment. Their icons are here, but they themselves are not. Neither the Theotokos, nor the saints, nor the angels are omnipresent; nor are the demons, even though they too are spirits. Only the Triune Godhead is omnipresent. At this point an objection arises that various heretics commonly use: “Since the Most Holy Theotokos is not omnipresent, why do you ask for her intercessions? Why do you call upon her? Why do you not go directly to Christ, who is omnipresent?” This objection does not stand, because the same question had been raised long ago, even before these supposed luminaries appeared in the fifteenth century. It had already arisen in the time of Athanasius the Great: How is it possible—

Take Saint Nicholas, for example. If we suppose that today is his feast, one person here cries out, “My Saint Nicholas, come here!” Another is drowning somewhere else and cries, “My Saint Nicholas, come there!” and another calls from somewhere else. How can he appear and answer all these people, since he is not omnipresent and does not possess that attribute? Saint Athanasius the Great answered: “It is true that he will respond in one place and must finish there before going elsewhere. But at the same time, Christ sends an angel to the other place in the person of the Saint, and the angel ministers there as the Saint.” For no Saint acts on his own, nor does our Most Holy Theotokos act on her own. They all receive permission from Christ. The miracles are done for His sake; the healings come from Him; everything comes from Him. Let me simply remind you of this.

What does the troparion of Saint Spyridon say? “Thou wast shown forth as a champion of the First Council and a wonderworker, O Spyridon, our God-bearing father. Therefore thou didst speak to a dead woman in the tomb, and didst turn a serpent into gold; and while chanting thy holy prayers, O most sacred one, thou hadst angels serving with thee. Glory to Him who glorified thee.” We do not say to the Saint, “Glory to you, because you do these works.” No: “Glory to Him who glorified thee; glory to Him who crowned thee; glory to Him who works healings for all through thee.” Does Saint Nektarios of Aegina work miracles? It is Christ who works through Saint Nektarios of Aegina. Christ works through the Holy Unmercenaries. Christ works through the newly revealed Saints Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene. Christ—Christ is in all things. Christ commands; the Saint must receive permission from the Lord. No one acts on his own.

All these things begin for the glory of Christ and proceed from the throne of Christ. A person who has not settled the account of his sins with Christ should ask nothing from anyone. Not even the Theotokos, not all the hosts and ranks of Angels—no one can help him. They will all depart empty-handed, because his account with Christ remains unsettled. Christ was crucified; Christ shed His blood, and His blood demands an answer: “Bring Me your sins. From this day onward I will not condemn you. Give Me your sins; untie My hands so that I may help you.” As long as this does not happen, we should not expect an answer. Satan, then, is not omnipresent. He must leave me, go to my house, tempt someone there, and then tempt someone else. In other words, as we say, he exists within place and time. So what happens? How does he sniff these things out? How does he learn about them? With the help of his other

accomplices. He has others who assist one another. The following incident happened on Kefalonia. A suffering woman had a brother who was possessed by a demon. She kept him in a cell there and was teaching him sacred words from the Trisagion: “Holy God,” “Holy Mighty,” and so on. But Satan, you know, can say all those things. He says, “Holy God”; he says, “Holy Mighty”; and he says, “Holy Immortal.” What he will not say is, “Have mercy on us.” He will not say, “Have mercy on us.” So she drilled him in the words: “Holy God.” “Holy God.” “Holy Mighty.” “Holy Mighty.” “Holy Immortal.” “Holy Immortal.” “Have mercy on us”—nothing. “Have mercy on us”—nothing. He will not stoop to that; he will not ask Christ for mercy. She would also say things such as “the Kingdom of Heaven,” “the Nativity of the Theotokos,” and “the Annunciation,”

and she intended to put a little of the blessing of water into his drink. She went behind him into the kitchen, there in the courtyard of Saint Gerasimos, to make the coffee. From where he was, he shouted, “I will not drink what you are putting in there. Do not bring the coffee here.” Another little demon had told him, “Do you know what they are doing over there? They are putting that in it.” They work together, you understand? One and the same demon cannot keep track of everything. There was another incident on the Holy Mountain, at the Holy Monastery of the Great Lavra. A monk who had received a miracle from Saint Gregory Palamas and felt indebted to him went to restore a small, old chapel dedicated to Saint Gregory Palamas. After he restored it, he was attacked by demons face-to-face.

Did it happen once? It happened many times. One evening they had surrounded him in this way and began stoning him. Farther away he could see a little demon, and he was forced to cry out, “My Saint Gregory, will you let them kill me?” At that very moment, the little demon whistled.

“He is coming,” it said. “He is coming.” At those words, Saint Gregory was coming. They all vanished; they fled to the devil and disappeared. The man was set free. These things did not happen only in ancient times, but in our own time. We are the ones who provoke Satan. We are the ones who give Satan rights over us. For this too is a question: what can he do, and what can he not do?

Whatever you allow him to do, he can do. Whatever you do not allow him to do, he cannot do. What do we say to Christ in the Doxology? “Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in Thee.” The same principle applies with Satan. He has only as many rights over us as we ourselves grant him through our carelessness and our deeds. Every transgression is like handing the devil a plot of land, where he pitches his tent and says, “I have rights here.” Christ comes and sees him sitting inside, like a hare in its burrow when a dog comes over it to drive it out or seize it there. But Satan says to Him, “I am not leaving. This is mine. This place is mine. He did this, and that, and this other thing, and still another. I have rights.” And when a person gives the devil rights through his sins, the devil cannot be driven away. Therefore, whatever Satan

possesses is what we ourselves have surrendered to him. God will hand us over to Satan only with great reluctance. We would have to be very holy, like Paul: “A thorn in the flesh was given to me, to buffet me.” It was given to me; I did not provoke it myself. But this was Paul, a Saint, and so that he would not fall into pride because of the many revelations he had received, God gave him this affliction to trouble him. That is why he says, “It was given to me.” But in our case, there is no need for God to give such a thing or permit it. We ourselves permit it and provoke it: “Come inside.” Here you are begging Christ to heal your loved one, only so that the day after tomorrow you can celebrate with dancing and the like. We ourselves invite the devil. You drive the blessing and healing out of the house so that the devil can enter through the dancing. Here we have a festival with drums, a celebration, and so forth. We ourselves create these things

through our whole way of life, which is contrary to the Gospel and the Church of Christ. Now, if someone wished to ask by what means Satan gets a person into his grasp, his first method—and one that produces many results—is the flesh. This is what he uses: the flesh. Ninety-eight percent of those in Hell are there through the flesh, by means of the flesh. The flesh is what makes a person sexually immoral, an adulterer, a thief, a killer of children—what does it not make him? It makes him a beast; it makes him a drunkard; it makes him one thing after another. The flesh was given as a helper to the soul, yet it ends up destroying the soul because a person does not use it for good as he should. And so, through the flesh, we come to perdition.

We ought instead to attain salvation through the flesh. Those who have taken this matter seriously are the people who have left the world, or who struggle while living in the world and have restricted their food and pleasures. For I would like you to know what our Fathers say: “Where blood flows in, the spirit flows out.” Wherever there is food, easy living, ice cream, and all the things you see pampered children eating—where blood flows in, the spirit flows out. And whatever is wrongly acquired through pleasure is healed through pain.

You will suffer! You will undergo deprivation in the very place where you indulged yourself and found carnal satisfaction, however it may have happened. These things are essential principles that must be heeded. This is why all those who advanced and became holy followed a threefold path: “By fasting, vigil, and prayer, thou didst receive heavenly gifts.” Job says, “Satan’s power is at the navel of the belly.” Satan has his seat here, in our stomach. The more we feed the flesh, the more our lower appetites demand satisfaction and outward release, and destruction follows. Therefore, people who are unwilling to subdue the flesh in this way and use it rightly will instead be used by the flesh.

One day they will follow wherever it leads. That is the conclusion here. The first means, then, is through the flesh, and by it Satan claims most of his victims. Then there are the falls of those whom he catches through logismoi coming from the right—that is, seemingly good intrusive thoughts. These are people who have a very high opinion of themselves. Satan has them securely bound. He lets them give alms, avoid stepping on ants, and appear holy in every other respect, because he holds them fast by this one thing. For when a person is not careful and falls into Satan’s hands through conceit, lifting his head and imagining himself to be something,

he begins to think that whatever he has done or whatever he possesses, whether material or spiritual, is his own achievement, the result of his own cleverness

and worth, rather than a gift from God—for it is a gift from God. At the end, the priest comes out and declares on behalf of us all—and if we do not agree, we should leave: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” Nothing good belongs either to us or to Satan; it comes from the grace of God. And if God often preserves us from falls in which we would have crashed headlong and never risen again, it is the grace of God that intervenes beforehand to save us. So if a person attributes these things to himself—this being a seemingly good thought that Satan whispers to us—we enjoy it and feel flattered. How often we want to know: What impression did our suit make? What impression did our furnishings make? What impression did our wardrobe make? What impression does our style make? What impression does our studio—or whatever it may be—our apartment, make?

This is satanic egoism, a fall from the right, through seemingly good thoughts; Satan keeps us bound there. A prudent person should regard everything as refuse. And if he does possess something and others applaud him, praise him, or thank him, he should say: “Do not applaud the clouds when it rains. Applaud the One who sent the clouds and filled them with water, my beloved.” This is how a person must think if he does not want Satan to hold him captive. The flesh, then, is one thing by which Satan catches a person, and this mindset is the second. As for those whom he has failed to catch, who have escaped him and turned toward religion, Satan then tries, if possible, to fashion religions of his own, so that he may gather people as his subjects within them. Human beings are by nature

drawn toward God. They want to approach God and worship Him. This is why, as we know, people have made a god of the sun, have made gods of serpents, and have cows as gods. Man searches by nature; his whole being reaches outward toward God. He wants something, somewhere to rest and place his trust. This is something man needs. Satan offers him easy paths. All heresies offer easy paths, and they enlist human reasoning as their ally.

Human reasoning! How far the one true faith transcends reason; it is not a rational system. In Orthodoxy, one plus one does not equal two; for Christ, one plus one does not equal two. For Muhammad, one plus one equals two. For the Buddha, one plus one equals two. For Calvin, Russell, the Pope, and all the rest, one plus one equals two.

In Orthodoxy, one plus one does not equal two. Here there are Mysteries. They reject these Mysteries; they refuse to accept them. And Christ is neither logic nor mathematics. He is above reason. He is not contrary to reason; He is above reason. In other words, what Orthodoxy proclaims is not contrary to reason but above reason, and humility is needed in order to accept it. Let me give you an example. Once they caught a woman in the very act of adultery and brought her to Christ. Christ was bent down, His head lowered, writing something in the sand with His finger. They came and said to Him, “Rabbi, we caught this woman in the very act of adultery. Our law says that we must stone her. What do You say?”

He was expected to say either, “Stone her,” or, “Do not stone her.” If He said, “Stone her,” then where was His teaching on forgiveness? If He said, “Do not stone her,” He would be speaking against the Mosaic Law. Either Christ would be discredited or He would be arrested. He raised Himself up, looked at them, and said, “Hypocrites, why do you test Me?” They had come to trap Him by His words, because according to their reasoning one plus one equaled two: He must tell us either one thing or the other. What did Christ answer? “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” Convicted by their own conscience that they were not sinless and that they themselves deserved stoning for other things, they dropped their stones and departed, beginning with the elders. You see that for Christ, one plus one does not equal two.

Let me give you another example. One day they went and put this question to Christ: “Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar? Yes or no? There is nothing more to discuss. He must answer us: Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar?” Once again He raised His head and said, “Hypocrites, why do you test Me?” For they had gone there intending to trap Him in His words. If He said they should pay, then they would say, “So that is what He is like too. What a pity—He claims to be descended from David and to care about our suffering.” But if He said they should not pay, then He would be opposing Caesar: “Arrest Him!” Either discredit Him or arrest Him—that was their scheme. And what did Christ answer? Did He say yes or no? “Bring Me the tribute coin,” He said. “Go and bring Me a coin.” The tribute coin was something like one of our five-drachma coins today, worth four drachmas. So they brought Him that tribute coin.

As you know, such coins bear various inscriptions and other markings. So He pointed to it and said, “What is this here? Whose image and inscription are these?” They replied, “Caesar’s,” because Caesar was the ruler occupying their land. “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.” Then He said, “Now turn the coin over.” They turned it over, and there was the Temple of Solomon. “And render to God the things that are God’s.” They were speechless. They gathered themselves up and left. Never bring human reasoning into a matter where Christ has spoken. Not the mother who rejects her children and kills them; not the person who says he is ill, and so on; not the one who says, “I cannot make ends meet,” and therefore cheats the tax authorities, claiming he must steal so that his family can survive. Do not reason that way. Where God is concerned, there is no place for asking, “How can this be?” As the divine John Chrysostom says:

When God speaks, there is no question of “How will this happen?” God has spoken it. You must do as He says, and the rest is His concern. You may understand what you have done a hundred years later. Or perhaps you will not see it here; you will see it there, when God shows you the record of your heart—where He protected you, how He acted beforehand to save you, and so on. Human reasoning, then, has produced many religions. Someone says, “How can a sinful priest forgive sins? I will become a Protestant, where no priest is needed. Christ is everywhere. ‘My Christ, forgive me.’” But what did Christ say to you? When you are ill, you do not go to a photograph of the doctor; you go to the doctor himself. He presses you here and examines you there, and you cry, “Oh, doctor!” There is shouting and distress, then surgery, a prescription, medicines—and after all that you may even die. But here, what answer did Christ give you?

You spoke to Him directly, did you? You speak with the Holy Spirit? What answer did He give you? Did He not know what He was doing when He left someone to counsel you, to warn you in time, to instruct you, and to comfort you? But people ask, “How can that be?” These other systems are easy—easy systems! And people join them because they want somewhere to belong, so they can say that they believe something and are accomplishing something. Satan has deceived them and made them heretics. And they say—and this part is true—that from the moment they began attending and entered that heresy, they became better people. One says, “I was a gambler, but from that day onward I stopped playing cards.” Another says, “I was a womanizer, but I gave all that up.” Another says, “I was a prostitute, but I stopped,” and so on, “from the moment I took this Gospel into my hands.” Then someone asks, “How did you manage it? We have the same Gospel. Why can we not manage it, and why do we still face temptations?” It happened from the moment the devil entered your name in his ledger and tucked you safely into his inner pocket as a heretic. And now he presents you as...

an angel and no longer troubles you. Why should he trouble you, when he already has you securely through heresy? Why would he need you to remain a fornicator? He has no need of that. If he draws you, as an Orthodox Christian, into fornication, he does it to condemn you to Hell. But since he has already condemned you through heresy, through your denial of the true faith, he then presents you as upright and sits watching you there, as gentle as a little lamb.

«Έρχεται», λέει, «έρχεται». Με το «έρχεται», ερχόταν ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος. Χαθήκανε όλοι, πήγανε στο διάολο, φύγανε. Ελευθερώθηκε ο άνθρωπος. Δηλαδή πράγματα όχι τον καιρό εκείνο, τον καιρό ετούτο. Εμείς είμαστε αυτοί οι οποίοι προκαλούμε τον σατανά. Εμείς είμαστε εκείνοι που του δίδουμε δικαιώματα, του σατανά. Γιατί και αυτό είναι ένα ερώτημα: τι μπορεί και τι δεν μπορεί;

Μιλάει ο Θεός, δεν έχει «πώς θα γίνει». Ο Θεός το μιλεί. Θα το κάνεις έτσι και είναι δική του δουλειά. Και θα το δεις έπειτα από εκατό χρόνια, αυτό το οποίο κάνεις. Ή μπορεί να μην το δεις εδώ· θα το δεις εκεί, που θα σου δείξει το καρδιογράφημά σου ο Θεός, πού σε φύλαξε, πώς σε πρόλαβε και ούτω καθεξής. Με τη λογική, λοιπόν, πολλές θρησκείες. «Και πώς ένας αμαρτωλός παπάς συγχωρεί αμαρτίες; Θα πάω στον προτεσταντισμό, που δεν χρειάζεσαι. Πανταχού παρών ο Χριστός. Χριστέ μου, συγχώρεσέ με». Και τι σου είπε ο Χριστός; Όταν είσαι άρρωστος, δεν μπαίνεις στη φωτογραφία του γιατρού, αλλά πας εκεί. Σε σπρώχνει από εδώ, σε ζουλάει, που λέμε, «Αχ, γιατρέ», και φωνές και λοιπά, και χειρουργείο και συνταγή και φάρμακα, αχ, και πεθαίνεις κι από πάνω. Εδώ τι σου απήντησε ο Χριστός;
