Summary
The lecture begins by urging Christians to examine their own sins rather than judging the lives and failures of others. God’s care for the lilies, the ravens’ young, the Prophet Elijah, and every vulnerable person demonstrates that divine providence remains active precisely where human strength is insufficient. Sending another person to the devil is not an insult against Satan but a destructive wish that opposes Christ’s Kingdom, and therefore requires serious repentance and correction.

The subjects that have occupied us during these evenings, since last Saturday, have mostly concerned sin. After all, I think there is no more serious task for a person than attending to his own sins—not the sins of others, because, unfortunately, that is what often happens. For the most part, we concern ourselves with others and not with ourselves: with other people’s accounts, their lives, their homes and households, their positions, their work, their marriages, their way of life, even their beds—with everything except ourselves, as though we did not exist,
as though we had no work to do in our own house. It is ridiculous for a man who has a coffin in his own home to go and arrange someone else’s funeral. If each person attended to his own concerns—his personal and family affairs, within the sphere of his own influence—things in society would be very different. For, I repeat, when we occupy ourselves with everything else—with foreign and domestic affairs, the Church, the state, the neighborhood, enemies and friends—but neglect our own house, both the house of our soul and our earthly household, we should know that we are making no progress at all. The days are added one after another and pass away, but the person gains nothing.
As you will remember—and these talks have been recorded on tapes—we also addressed the subject of sin in general. Why is there such misery in the world today? Why so many crimes? Why so much hatred? Why wars? Why all these things? As you know, there is enough food in the world for people to eat until they die from overeating. There is no shortage of goods; there is an abundance of them. Yet hatred is just as abundant, and this is because sin exists. Sin is the misery within human life. Unfortunately, people do not want to understand this; and even if they do understand it, they do not take the measures they ought to take. In a manner of speaking, they commit spiritual suicide. If someone discovers that he is sick and knows that medicine is available but refuses to take it, that is suicide.
It is exactly the same in the spiritual life. As for the body, a person may sometimes recognize the illness and take the medicine, yet still not recover. But for the soul, healing is available without money and without toil. There a person commits a grave wrong when he pays no attention and takes no interest in the complete healing of his soul.
A person’s entire purpose here in the world is to set right the matter of his sins. He comes into the world already bearing sin: “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” And then there are the other sins he commits willingly. Night and day, he sins in word, in deed, and in thought. Even if he lives for only one day in this world, he is a sinner. Man drinks iniquity like water.
He drinks the cup of iniquity with his eyes, his hands, his ears, and his soul. He is like an untamed beast in every direction, yet he has the audacity to look at another person’s sins instead of his own. Many times, he even presents himself as a model for the whole world: “If only everyone were like me! If only they were like my husband, like my wife, like my son or my daughter,” and so on. All of this is falsehood, all of it the offspring of egotism. In any case, within this general theme, tonight, by the grace of God, I wanted to speak about one sin—a wrongful sin, a sin which, unfortunately, lies hidden throughout the whole of Christianity. It is an abomination in the eyes of God, and it hinders God from giving His grace to man. This sin is called
blasphemy. Many people do not know what it means to blaspheme; they do not use the word in its full sense. Blasphemy is not only what we hear—unfortunately, even from women—when someone blasphemes God, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Saints, the Holy Mysteries, or the Precious Cross. The Greek word for “blaspheme” is a compound word and means “to damage someone’s reputation.” To blaspheme is to damage a reputation. What reputation does God have, for example? That He is almighty and sovereign over all; that He is all love and providence toward man, wholly concerned for him.
A woman avoids having children and says, “How will I manage?” She blasphemes God. A man steals from the cashbox and says, “How will I manage? Do you know what the tax office demands? Do you know what is going on? I’ll be forced to steal; I’ll be forced to lie.” He blasphemes God because he calls God’s power into question. If he walks honestly, bearing the Cross in his hand, God has the power to help him, to preserve him from illness and protect him from financial loss, because God has that power. But this man blasphemes God and blasphemes Christ; he believes in nothing. For if I do not believe in Christ as He truly is—in His omnipotence, His perfect wisdom, and His providence—He who cares even for the lilies of the field, though an immoral couple may trample them underfoot with their heels or a goat may eat them, and who still bestows such care and attention upon them,
then He certainly cares for you, O man. So when I question Him and try to arrange everything by myself, with pencil and paper—this much adds up, this much does not, and so on—and consequently take up the scissors and begin cutting off human souls, then I blaspheme God. I damage His reputation. I say, “It is impossible; He does not have the power,” and I speak falsely.
Blasphemy is not only that which people see and hear and often shudder at—or which they utter themselves without shuddering, while Heaven alone shudders. It also includes all the other ways in which God’s will is rejected. God Himself, Christ Himself, says, “Fast on Wednesday and Friday.” Yet people do something entirely different. You are blaspheming God. “No, I believe in God, but...” There is no “but.” If you believe Him, you will do what He says.
He speaks—and you do not believe God. You blaspheme God. You insult His providence and damage the reputation of His wisdom. Did God make a mistake? God made no mistake. Your mind and mine make mistakes; God made no mistake. My belly may be mistaken. The world may be mistaken. The flesh may be mistaken. God made no mistake. Everything He has ordained is possible to accomplish, and He expects it from man. From whatever side we examine it, every act of lawlessness is blasphemy against God. We blaspheme God, write Him off, shut Him outside, disregard Him, and damage His reputation. So the word “blaspheme” does not refer only to the obscene abuse we hear directed against Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, God, the Saints, or the Precious Cross. It also applies to every transgression committed by man, because by it he calls God’s good reputation into question and damages it, saying, “God cannot do it.”
He can provide here for twelve or fifteen children—He can. So how can He not provide for your two? Who said He cannot? You are unable to understand it, and you call it into question. “I cannot love the other person.” God tells you, “Love the other person.” “I cannot do it.” You blaspheme God. Well, have you asked God to help you love the other person? You have not asked, because you do not want to. If God asks, “Do you want to?” you answer Him, “I cannot.” I did not ask whether you can. I did not ask whether you can raise children, nor did I ask whether you can love the other person. I ask you, “Do you want to raise children? Do you want to be reconciled with the other person? I will give you what you need.” “Without Me you can do nothing.” Have I not said this? Has My Evangelist not written it in the fifteenth chapter of John? As for the limits of your own strength, there is a beautiful passage in the Old Testament
concerning the raven. It is found in the Book of Job, in the thirty-eighth chapter, and also in a Psalm of David. It says: “Who has prepared food for the raven? For its young cry out to the Lord.” Why did God send meat and bread to the Prophet Elijah by a raven, morning and evening? Why did He not send it by another, clean bird? Did He have no swan, no dove, or no other clean birds? Why did He send it through that filthy bird? He had particular reasons. One reason—the first—was to humble Elijah. And Elijah proved his humility. He did not care who the messenger was; he accepted what was brought. Do not listen to those among us who demand saintly priests.
The Prophet Elijah accepted the raven and received the bread and the meat from it. And what do we receive here? Do we receive mere bread? Do we not receive the Body of Christ? This is the true fulfillment of the meat and the bread: what was a type there is fulfilled here. Consider the priest to be God’s raven. What do I care who the messenger is? I look at what the letter contains, what I need from it, and who has sent it to me. Now the raven is said to hate its own young. You see, when its chicks hatch high up in the ravines—for the raven does not build its nests down in the plains, where there are flies, worms, and other things—there is nothing in the ravines, chiefly because of the cold. What could there be? Could a fly or an insect live up there? There is nothing of the kind. So when the raven’s chicks hatch, it leaves them. It does not feed them as the other birds feed their young, going into the nest and caring for them until they grow,
until they have feathers and can finally fly out and find food for themselves. The raven lays its eggs and broods over them, but as soon as the chicks hatch, it leaves and abandons them. Would there be any ravens if God did not care for them? There would not. And yet God feeds the young ravens. Open the Book of Job to the thirty-eighth chapter. He who feeds the ravens’ young, who cares for the little ravens and does not let them die—will He allow His own children to perish? They are made in the image and likeness of Christ; they are destined to become Saints and to live in eternity. Will He abandon them? Where, then, would His power be revealed? In the rich man? The rich man’s power lies in his money. God’s power will be revealed in the poor man, in the father of many children, in the weak. “For My power is made perfect in weakness,” He said to Paul.
Do you read these things? Do you know them? You have grown old; you have learned languages, trades, fashions, schemes, and deceptions. You have learned how to become killers, how to do things and make things. But have we learned what Christ says? These things were written for us. They were not written only for monks; they were written for us, for every human being. All of them were written for each one of us. We are obliged to learn them. They do not evolve or become new laws. This is the law of God, which was, is, and will be, so that everyone may follow it. Therefore, when God cares for the young ravens and they remain alive, and when He says in the forty-ninth chapter of Isaiah, “Behold, I have inscribed your walls upon the palms of My hands,” a mother may perhaps forget her nursing child. She may become engrossed in talking with another woman
at the window, gossiping about some widow, some neighbor, and so on, while her child falls into the fire. She may stay on the telephone for a couple of hours, and the child may fall and be killed. Can a mother, Scripture asks, forget her nursing child? Normally she does not. She feels the child’s pain, cares for it, and trembles for it. Yet at times, through carelessness and inattention, she may do so. “But I,” God says, “have you engraved here upon My hand. I watch over you day and night. You sleep and snore at night, while I consider how to help you in the morning.” Has it never happened to you that at night you made one decision, whether good or bad, about some concern of yours? A woman decides that she will go in the morning to kill her child. She has made an agreement with that heartless, criminal doctor. Yet although she went to sleep with that intention, in the morning she does not go. She was asleep. Or perhaps she had not intended to go, yet in the morning she does.
A person changes. How do a person’s thoughts change? They change during sleep. Of course, man remains free, but they change while he sleeps. How is it that I go to sleep intending to kill my child in the morning, and then morning comes and I do not go? I intended to make a certain purchase, but in the morning I do not make it. At night I said yes; in the morning I say no. At night I said, “I will sell,” but the next day I do not. At night I said, “I will buy,” but the next day I do not go to buy. Who is responsible for this? Someone comes to the person and helps him during the night, while he sleeps. The Book of Job speaks about this. It says that God approaches a well-disposed person three or four times during the night and speaks to him. I have not consciously thought or calculated anything; I cannot say, “You see, I worked it out differently.” I simply get up in the morning and say the opposite. Therefore, man is being watched over. What mother can watch so perfectly? She is asleep over there, while her child dies over here. She is holding someone else’s child while neglecting her own. Who cares for the child? God cares for it.
Man does not know this. And when he calls this providence and this love of God into question, he blasphemes God. I repeat: to “blaspheme” does not refer only to obscene words and the like directed against Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cross, God, and so forth. We also blaspheme when we deny God His good reputation: that He is almighty, that He is love, that He is provident, that He holds all things in His care and is concerned for man, that He sacrifices Himself for man and even bears patiently with him. In any case, I want you to know that this sin exists chiefly among the Orthodox. The Turks do not blaspheme Allah; others do not blaspheme Zoroaster or Buddha, or whoever they follow. You do not hear such things among them. You hear them only among the Orthodox.
The Orthodox blaspheme their God. They blaspheme His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos; they blaspheme and blaspheme. You do not hear such things elsewhere. They happen among us. Now someone may ask, “And what will come of it?” Many people think that it is nothing at all. “What about this? Is there any Canon of ecclesiastical law which says, ‘You shall not blaspheme’?”
Does it surprise you that there is no commandment concerning blasphemy? He said, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not steal,” and “You shall not bear false witness.” He said to honor your father and your mother, and so on. But He did not say, “You shall not blaspheme.” So, since there is no law... My dear man, did you expect Him to include, “Do not blaspheme your Creator”? The very fact that this had to be said is a crushing indictment of mankind.
The fact that He did not go so far as to say, “You shall not blaspheme,” or, “Let the blasphemer be put to death,” or anything of the sort, is itself a crushing indictment. It is like saying, “Should I really have to include such a commandment? Is it even conceivable that a human being would blaspheme his Creator? Could such a thing be possible? Would I insult another person? What is this commandment you are giving me, sir? Could I ever do such a thing?” That is how we should understand it. Yet if you read the account of blasphemy from the time it first appeared—who the first blasphemer was, and all that followed—you will see how severe the measures were against those who blasphemed their Creator, in the very way that we, unfortunately, blaspheme Him today. Set aside the other, broader forms of blasphemy I mentioned earlier.
Perhaps you are curious to know who first blasphemed God. You will find the account in the Old Testament—for example, in Leviticus.
It is in chapter 24, verses 10 through 16. There you will find who first blasphemed God and what punishment he received from God for his blasphemy. This took place when the people of Israel, under the guidance of Moses, were journeying from Egypt toward the Promised Land. They were in the wilderness when, one day, the son of a mixed marriage—an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father—became involved in an incident. His mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. You know, the tribe of Dan...
even to this day is presented as a threat to the truth of Christianity and to humanity in general. Those who live in Jerusalem tell us of a saying that, when the tribe of Dan returns to Jerusalem, the end will be drawing near, with the destruction of Jerusalem and of humanity more broadly. And they say that for a number of years now members of the tribe of Dan have returned to Jerusalem, and they expect events to unfold at any time. You can see for yourselves how the international atmosphere grows heavier every day, especially here in this region. In any case, these things are in God’s hands, not mine. I mention it only because the subject came before us.
So the first man to blaspheme God had a mother from the tribe of Dan. This son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father came to blows with another Israelite, and in the heat and anger of their quarrel he blasphemed God.
It came like a thunderbolt upon everyone who heard him. They hurried to tell Moses what had happened in the camp, just as we have described it. Moses himself was utterly stunned. What were they to do with the man? They arrested him, placed him in custody, kept him apart, and waited for Moses to give an answer. But Moses had no law concerning this.
He had the law, “You shall not steal,” and the law, “You shall not commit adultery,” but he had no commandment saying, “You shall not blaspheme.” So he asked God, and God answered that they should take the man outside the assembly, beyond the camp. All who had heard him blaspheme were to lay their hands upon his head. Then, after they stepped back, the whole assembly was to stone him. And they stoned him, and he died—the first man to blaspheme God. I mention this simply as background and history. Now let us turn to our own situation. It is foolish for a person to blaspheme—utterly foolish. Of course, the blasphemer does not understand what is happening, because if you ask him...
“My dear man, you blaspheme—but what do you gain from it?” he answers, “I feel a release. I let off steam.” Anger is choking me, someone says something to me, and when I blaspheme, I let off steam. But have you ever really considered what is happening? That gentleman—the one we do not name, the one we wish far from us—comes along with his little horns and tail, bearing the experience of 7,500 years, for Satan is at least 7,500 years old. I am speaking on the basis of the Scriptures. I am not speaking according to what the world says, adding zeros and talking about millions and billions. According to the Scriptures, he is approximately 7,500 years old. Can you imagine how much experience he has? When some cheeky little girl of thirteen or fourteen sets herself up as wiser than her father and mother, just imagine how much Satan knows after all those years. Think how much the devil understands about these things.
If a person could grasp what Satan does to drive him into blasphemy, he would never blaspheme. That gentleman comes and puts a noose around the person’s neck, saying, “Blaspheme, and I will release you.” Then he tightens it further. The person becomes dizzy and feels ready to burst, and at that moment he blasphemes. As soon as he does, he feels relief. In other words, he has signed his name; Satan has obtained his signature. “I let off steam,” he says. You may feel bodily relief, but spiritually you have placed yourself in debt, because you blasphemed One who has never opposed you. Have you ever seen Christ set Himself against you? Your neighbor may say something against you, shake out a sheet over your head, or throw things down on you—I can understand that. Perhaps another neighbor has harmed someone, or something else has happened. I can understand why you might regard him as an enemy.
But people blaspheme God at every little setback. A screw will not go in, and they curse Christ. The car will not start, and they curse the Most Holy Theotokos. What does the Most Holy Theotokos have to do with your car? Instead of saying, “Most Holy Theotokos, help me, so that I am not stranded here tonight and buried in the snow, unable to get to work,” you blaspheme the very one who could help you, bring you safely through, and enable you to repair whatever has gone wrong with your machine. It is only metal; naturally, it has its limits. It is as though it tells you, “I can go this far, but no farther.” Can you not see that? Why do you blaspheme? You see a man with a donkey, and he blasphemes the Most Holy Theotokos because of the donkey. My dear man, why do you blaspheme her? What has she done to you? The Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, the precious Cross, and God could help you, yet you blaspheme them. When all is said and done, it is foolishness. But today it passes almost unnoticed...
Do you understand? Heaven withdraws, and grace withdraws. For the devil goes to Christ and says, “Do they not blaspheme Your Mother? Do they not bow down to me? By what right do You keep them? Give me this man; give me this woman.” And then you see situations arise in homes that no one could ever have expected. Could even the greatest philosopher have foreseen the things that happen in a household? Many of us do not pay enough attention to this. We fail to understand it, and we behave very foolishly and shamefully toward those whom we ought to call upon at every moment: “My Christ, help me reach my work safely.”
“My Christ, help my little child on the way. I can watch him only as far as the corner; You watch over him beyond that. Who knows what traps may be waiting for him or what someone may devise against him?” “My Christ, please do this for me.” Yet instead of asking Him, I blaspheme Him as well. How can this be? If a person stopped to think, could he ever ask anything from someone he blasphemes? Could he ask anything from someone whom... “But what have I ever done to God?” When has God ever demanded an account from you? When have you ever found God opposing you?
He gives you the sun, He gives you oxygen, and He provides food day and night—enough even for your cats and every living thing. He gives you health so that you can work. Do you think you succeeded because you are clever? Are you serious? God holds the very workings of your mind in His hand, yet you speak so grandly. When Nebuchadnezzar demanded that people bow down before his image, God turned his mind, and for seven years he lived outdoors like an animal, with nails a cubit long and hair grown wild. You are dealing with God; do not set yourself against Him. He need only turn one little screw in your mind, and you will be out there with a reed, trying to strike swallows perched on the wires.
God is just. Yet because He seems not to act and shows such great forbearance, we imagine that nothing is there. But it is there indeed—and woe to us. Up to this point, what I have said may seem irrelevant to some of you, because you do not blaspheme Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the precious Cross, or anything sacred. You may sometimes mention the devil—the one we wish far from us—and unfortunately there is a very large group of people who do not blaspheme the sacred persons, but believe they are blaspheming the devil. Even when their spiritual father asks them in Holy Confession, “My child, do you ever blaspheme?” they often answer, “No, Father, I do not blaspheme. Sometimes, when I lose my temper, I tell someone to go to the one we wish far from us.”
“My child, that is not good. Stop doing it and be careful.” That is the answer they receive. So the person thinks he is not blaspheming, while his priest merely gives him a spiritual aspirin and tells him to be more careful. But pay attention to a detail I am about to reveal. The person who sends someone else to the devil is not blaspheming the devil. He is blaspheming that person’s Christ, his Mother, and his Cross; as for the devil, he is actually wishing him well. For when I send my child to the devil, I do not blaspheme the devil. I am simply wishing for the Kingdom of Christ to lose one person and the devil’s kingdom to gain one. I am not merely a blasphemer; I am an agent of the devil. I am not merely a blasphemer; I am an agent of the devil.
Both the person confessing and the one hearing the confession are completely in the dark if they think of it that way. You are not blaspheming Satan; you are sending him your good wishes: “I send you my mother-in-law. I send you my wife. I send you my mother. I send you my child. I send you my neighbor. I send you my employee. I send you my supervisor. I send you the priest. I send you the bishop. I send them all to the devil.” How are you blaspheming the devil? In what way? You are wishing for his kingdom to grow. If they are to go to the devil, they must leave somewhere else. They belong to Christ and are struggling spiritually, but you send them away and wish that they would go to the devil. Where is your blasphemy against him? You are not blaspheming him. You are doing Satan a favor; you are acting as his agent and sending him human beings—souls for whom Christ died. If I were a spiritual father, according to the way I understand this matter—and this is indeed how it is, as you yourselves will hear...
if I imposed a one-year canon, a rule of prayer, upon someone who blasphemed Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cross, or God, I would impose a hundred-year canon upon someone who sends another person to the devil. That is how great the difference is. The person who blasphemes Christ blasphemes Christ. The person who blasphemes the Most Holy Theotokos blasphemes the Most Holy Theotokos. The person who blasphemes the Cross blasphemes the Cross. But the person who sends another human being to the devil takes the entire incarnate economy of salvation and throws it to the devil—whether we speak of the Cross, Great and Holy Friday, the Most Holy Theotokos whose heart was pierced by a sword, Christ who came among us, the Holy Spirit who came to save us, or God who sent Him. Whatever it is, that person takes it all and throws it to the devil. For all these things were done to rescue mankind from the devil—the very place to which you and I send another person. Fix this firmly in your mind.
Guard your tongue. Repent in dust and ashes; this is no small matter. When you send a person to the devil, you leave nothing untouched: you blaspheme every Mystery, all of Golgotha—everything. For all these things were done to rescue mankind from the devil. It is as though you were saying, “The Crucifixion means nothing to me; let him go to the devil.” Do you understand? Do you grasp, my dear man, what this truly means? How can you tell me, “Sometimes I merely mention the one we wish far from us”? You are an agent of Satan. You prepare human beings for his kingdom, and you wish your employee, your animal, your own loved one, or your neighbor into his hands. You send that person there. So when humanity sends the rest of humanity to the devil, what is Christ to do? What is Christ to do, my child, when you take that person away from Him? There was once a woman who was four months pregnant...
She was suffering the difficulties that many mothers experience during the first five months of pregnancy—vomiting and great discomfort. Once, a mother who was four months pregnant found herself in such a condition. From within her womb she sent her child to the devil, cursing and blaspheming the child with these words: “May the devil enter you and never come out unless every priest in the Metropolis reads the four Gospels and says Amen.”
But nothing happened at the time. The pregnancy continued, the child was born, and he reached the age of three. Then one day, when the child was three years old, he was playing outside in the courtyard while his mother was there. Suddenly, she saw a black cat come and enter into the child. The child fell to the ground and began writhing, crying out in pain, weeping, and thrashing about. Naturally, the mother ran to him. She made the sign of the Cross over him and censed him with incense, but nothing helped. The child kept thrashing on the ground and foaming at the mouth. She called the priest. The priest came and read the prayers, because the piety of our people often led them to seek the priest even before the doctor. They would go straight to the priest. Why, even when a goat fell ill, as we say, they would call the priest, because the Church has prayers for every need and ministers to all things in a wondrous way, without money or anything else. This does not mean that we reject science; we spoke about that the day before yesterday.
God made the doctors and the medicines as well, but here we are speaking also of the other blessings He has given us. No one was able to do anything. The child remained in that condition, suffering torment and all that went with it. Then the mother remembered what she had said, and she confessed it to the priest. “Father, I am the one who said such a thing. Surely the demon will not come out, Father.” Naturally, the priest felt compassion for her. He went to the bishop and said, “Your Eminence, this is what happened in my parish. A woman—I do not know how—was suffering during her pregnancy, and in a curse she sent her child to the devil, and so on. Now the child has been born and is three years old, and right before her eyes the child became possessed by a demon. A black cat came and entered the child. The child is convulsing and carrying on, and so forth. But strangely, the demon has said this: unless all the priests come together...”
“Unless all the priests read the Tetraevangelion—the Book of the Four Gospels—and say Amen, the demon will not come out. Please, as an act of love, notify the Metropolis so that we may all gather, read it, and free the child, since this mother, whether you call her foolish or whatever else you wish, did this in a moment of great distress.” It took three months for the full assembly to take place, as we were saying. One day one priest was ill; earlier, another priest from a different parish had been ill; then another, who served at the far end of the Metropolis, was away on a journey. So it took three months for everyone to gather. After those three months had passed and all the priests of the Metropolis were present, they read the Tetraevangelion—that is, the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And when they said Amen, the demon came out. It should also be noted that, before this, it had been saying to her:
“Mine. It makes no difference that I was the one who let you keep the child and raise it; the child is mine. From the age of four months, this child has belonged to me.” That was when the mother sent her child to the devil. Then you hear another woman say, “Get that raven out of here.” Are you blaspheming, my daughter? “No, no, no.” What does “the raven” mean? Is not “the raven” the devil? Instead of telling him to leave Christ alone, they tell him to go to the raven.
You may call it simply “sending someone to the devil,” but that is how serious it is. If all these curses and blasphemies of ours were brought to light, we would go straight to Hell by ourselves. God would not need to say to us, “Depart”; we would go of our own accord. Bear in mind that this is a broader spiritual principle. It is not merely that I will be condemned, but that each person will go to Hell of his own accord. How can I put it? Let me give you a simple example.
We come from rural areas. In the evening, we hear the villagers returning from the fields. One may be riding his donkey, perhaps with a load of hay as well. There are the oxen walking ahead; there is the pig, the sheep, the dog, the villager’s children, and the villager himself.
So the courtyard gate opens. What will you see? Stand there at the gate and watch. As soon as they come in, you will see the oxen—Melistis and the other one—go straight to their manger. You will see the pig make its own way to its sty. You will see the sheep go to their place, and the dog go to its own special spot.
from the children, and the gentleman.
The others will go on their own. In exactly the same way, at the Second Coming, each of us will go to the place that belongs to us, even to Tartarus, because there can be no lies there. We will raise our hands and say, “You are good, O Lord. Yes, it is just; I am justly punished, and this is where I belong.” One day, call the coal yard and ask them to send you a sack of coal on a cart. The coalman will bring you the sack. You say to him, “Wait, please. Come upstairs so I can pay you and offer you a sweet,” and so on. Then you see the coalman coming in, and you say, “Sit down, sit down.” But where can he sit? He draws back of his own accord, covered as he is in coal dust. He would rather take the money in his hand, receive his tip, and leave without touching anything. When he sees that everything is clean, he will not sit down.
Would I, filthy as I am, sit down in Paradise? I would leave of my own accord and go where I belong. Yet look how we deceive ourselves: God’s justice does not speak; God’s justice does not act. Today, God’s justice does not act. If God’s justice did act, who would sin? Who would steal if he knew that his hand would be cut off? Your hand is not going to be cut off by force; if that is what it takes, you must cut it off yourself. There was an Indian man who played cards. He was enslaved to the passion of gambling and could not give it up. So he went and cut off his hand, and then he stopped gambling. God accepts this. But you must come and cut off your own hand; God will not cut it off. You must cut it off yourself. Christ says somewhere that it is better to enter Paradise maimed, with one hand, than to enter Hell with both. But He wants you to do this yourself, and He wants me to do it myself—
not for God to do it. God’s justice does not act openly today, my beloved, yet we blaspheme Christ by claiming that it does not act at all. Still, to be clear and fair to the Lord and to the message we preach, those who wish to see God’s justice do see it, in both ways: punishing and rewarding. Out of a thousand cases that deserve to be rewarded, one, two, or five receive their reward. The other 995 remain unrewarded in this world. Out of a thousand cases that deserve punishment, fifty percent are punished outwardly. The other nine hundred remain unpunished. Yet inwardly they too are punished, because they suffer the pangs of conscience.
Because of their pride, they do not admit it, yet they understand that they did wrong, that what they did was not right. Still, their pride keeps them from admitting it. What, then, will become of the nine hundred who deserve punishment and the nine hundred and fifty, let us say, who deserve a reward? What will become of them? The Apostle Paul tells us in the eleventh chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews, when he speaks about the Saints of the Old Testament: “They were sawn in two, they were tempted, they died by the sword; they wandered about in goatskins and lived in caves of the earth.” And there at the end he says: “Yet they did not receive what had been promised.”
They have not yet received the prize, he says. I do not mean us here; those who have gone on from this life have not yet received their final place. Why, Paul? Why does God act in this way? “God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.” God, he says, has something better in mind: they too must wait for us to finish our course, until the consummation of the ages comes, so that one day we may all come together—some to receive the recompense for their deeds, and others their rewards. Therefore, on the basis of these words of Paul, found, as I repeat, in the final verses of chapter eleven of the Epistle to the Hebrews,
This proves that judgment has not yet taken place, even for those who have died. Those who have died—who have fallen asleep—know that they have passed and succeeded, but they do not know what their final grade will be. In the same way, the others know that they have failed, but they do not know how badly. Where will they go? Will they go down to Tartarus, where the worm does not die, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth? Into the outer fire, into the fire...? Where will they go? They do not know. Think of children after their examinations. You see one of them playing outside. “What happened, George? Did you pass?” “Yes,” he says, “I passed.” “With what grade?” “We haven’t received the results yet.” “What happened to little Katerina? What happened to little Katerina?” “Oh, it’s terrible—Katerina did not pass.” “How many marks did she fail by?” “I don’t know.” You have to go and see the examination results to find out by how many marks, by how many hundredths, she failed. Yet the one knows that he passed, and the other knows that she failed.
They are beyond the grave for now, until the end of the age. At the end of the age, the righteous will go still higher, while the unrighteous will go still lower. Their cases have not yet been settled. The files of both remain open. That is why, until the end of the age, the Church of Christ can influence the standing of those who have departed this world. Yet we concern ourselves with doing our nails and our hair before coming to Church, instead of bringing prosphora, writing down names, and praying for those who have departed this life and are waiting for something from us.
They can no longer do anything for themselves. They have laid down the body; they are no longer human beings, but spirits. The body with which they sinned they left here—a debt owed to the earth, which they have now paid in full.
So, is judgment at work today? As I told you one evening, it is in a state of partial repose. That is exactly how it stands: partially at rest, ready for Him to take it into His hand. This has misled many—even the Honorable Forerunner. Do you know what the Honorable Forerunner said? “He who comes after me,” he said, “will take the winnowing shovel and clear the threshing floors.” Yet Christ came after him and did not take up the shovel. Instead, the Jews did away with the Forerunner, while the shovel still lies there at his feet. And the axe that, as he says, lies at the root of the tree—Christ has not yet taken it up to cut. The axe of the Honorable Forerunner is the justice of Christ, which has still not acted upon many people. Yet at times—perhaps not often, but on rare occasions—we see the justice of God act immediately, like a thunderbolt. It has a purpose: either to stop the person himself before it is too late, or to make him an example to others. It has a purpose. I will tell you of an incident that will make you shudder.
This took place in Tripoli, in the Tripoli cemetery, during the Occupation. An illicit couple went there and committed an indecent act on top of a grave. These two used the marble slab as their bed, became stuck together like dogs, and remained there all night, unable to separate. Surgery had to be performed, and the man’s penis was severed. That illicit couple—what can I say?—behaved like beasts there upon another person’s remains. It is enough to make one’s hair stand on end. There have been other cases as well: husbands and wives who died during intercourse while the Divine Liturgy was being celebrated.
Others died on Great Friday during sexual intercourse—things they do not tell you about—and they bury them and say, “It was a heart attack.” If you knew what goes on behind the scenes, your hair would stand on end. In Leviticus, chapter 24, where I am reading to you about the blasphemer, a little further down it says this: a Jew went out on the Sabbath to gather wood.
They stoned him. Think about what we do from Saturday evening until Sunday evening—what filth goes on! Think how many people come here, gentlemen, yet profane Sunday and make it difficult for their wives or husbands to come to Church. Why can they not practice abstinence for one, two, or three Sundays? What, will they melt like sugar in water? What are we—beasts?
Do we not have a soul? Is nothing sacred? Are the bells not ringing? Does the Holy Spirit not descend? The Divine Liturgy is being celebrated. What are you? Are you a beast? What are you? Even beasts have their appointed season. They do not have this constant, daily urge that we have—we who, in this matter, have become lower than the animals. And yet rational man, by misusing his freedom, brings about these results. So, as I was telling you, this axe reminds us that God’s justice is not operating today. God sees one man blaspheming and another trampling upon the Holy Altar. And people say, “Why does God not strike him down?” God desires his salvation. If He were to strike everyone down, we ourselves would become Hell. Do you not remember when Christ once went with His disciples to speak in a village, and the people drove them out without ceremony? John’s blood boiled, and Peter’s blood boiled. “Will You permit fire to fall from heaven, as in the days of the Prophet Elijah, and consume them?”
“Is this how they are to drive us away?” “No,” He said, “there is no need. We are not of that spirit.” If things worked that way, everyone who sinned would be sent straight from here to Hell. Do not listen to those who speak about other people’s faults but fail to see their own. “Why did You not cut off his hands? Why do You not put out his eyes? Why does God not cut out his tongue?” As though it were so simple! He would have had to cut out your own tongue many times. You would have needed many pairs of eyes for Him to put out by now. He would have had to cut off many of your hands by now. But God is not a butcher. God is not a profiteer. God desires the salvation of mankind. He desires a person’s metanoia—his repentance—and his return. Otherwise, He could fill Hell in a single night. Who could stand? As David says in the Spirit, “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” Who can stand and settle accounts with God? You parade another person’s faults in order to conceal your own.
Yet this is what we usually do. “At least I am not like her.” One woman had undergone twenty-four abortions, and another had undergone seven. “You know, Mr. Panagopoulos,” she said to me, “she must have had twenty-four. I have had only seven.” There is an argument for you! Do not forget it. Write it down; you will need it at the Judgment. She will remain twenty-four steps outside Paradise, and you will remain seven steps outside Paradise. What difference does that make? You still do not enter. Even if you commit only one sin, as I told you the other day, you do not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Satan’s sin was one; Eve’s sin was one; Moses’ sin was one. He did not enter the Promised Land. Does God need us? Does He owe us anything? Does God owe anyone anything? Day and night He freely bestows His blessings upon the whole human race—even upon those who insult Him, blaspheme Him, and make obscene gestures against Him.
His sorrow over us Orthodox Christians is boundless and beyond description. There is no Orthodox home that has not witnessed some miracle from the Most Holy Theotokos or from the Saints, some blessing that its members could never have obtained even if they possessed the wealth of Rockefeller or of our contemporary Onassis, who were unable to accomplish anything through their money. Even his name passed away, as David says: “I saw the ungodly man, and in a moment I turned my head. When I looked again, not only was he gone, but even the place where he had sat was no more.” Do we not see these things? Does the name Onassis mean anything today? These are events of our own time. We are not blaspheming the departed man; we are simply using him as an example. Many say, “Just give me some money! I know what I will do. I will build churches, help orphans, help widows,” and so forth. Really!
Do you have the strength to bear such a burden? I ask you: does that name still remain? His young son departed before him. Then he himself departed while lying in an incubator. Not even his name remains. Does this not make an impression on you? His companion, Callas, also departed, and not even her remains exist. They burned them and scattered them. Dust—nothing remains.
Only salt—alas—is left to remind us of the surname Callas, of her name. Do these things tell you nothing? Must we go far back into the past? Do we not have examples from our own time, happening every day? Do these things tell us nothing? I do not know. I want to believe that all of you are saints, blameless in speech, and that you have never blasphemed God in any way. But if you have blasphemed God, go and confess it with humility. To say, “They humiliated me,” is an excuse and a lie.
“It was my nerves,” and so forth. It is not your nerves; it is the devil, who sets your nerves on fire. There is unbelief within you, and this creates the condition, because if you are not punished here, you will certainly be punished there. God’s longsuffering, Paul says, leads us to metanoia—to repentance—because He is waiting for us. “Do you not know,” he says in the second chapter of Romans, “that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” God’s longsuffering is not given so that you may continue blaspheming Him and doing whatever you please. It is given so that you may repent; it has no other purpose. It is not so that you may eat aubergines or enjoy the fine figs from Aidipsos or make use of the baths. All these things will pass away one day. The whole of what is called modern civilisation is no more substantial than watercolour paper. The present age is a regression: when man departs from God, he moves backwards. He must walk together with God and with His blessing. God accepts all these things, but on one condition: that man does not sin. And if he does sin, he must rise again and continue the struggle.
For a person to fall is human. John Chrysostom expresses it beautifully: “To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic.” I do not know, then, what your own disposition is. Even if you possess none of the things I have been speaking about, open your Gospel and turn to the book immediately before the Apocalypse. Before you reach the Apocalypse, there is the Epistle of Jude, which consists of a single chapter. Read that epistle. There you will find that when Moses died, the devil came to take his body, intending to devise his own schemes and false prophecies contrary to what Moses had previously proclaimed. God then sent the Archangel Michael, who contended with the devil. Yet the angel did not blaspheme or curse Satan.
He did not say, as we do, “Accursed Beelzebub,” and all the rest. He said only, “The Lord rebuke you.” Let the Lord rebuke you. I do not rebuke you or curse you; I have neither the authority nor the command to do so. Where, then, did we find such authority, that we dare to blaspheme? God did not permit even him to do so. How, then, can we? Do you understand? There is also a saying that raises a particular question:
“He who blasphemes against God will be forgiven, and he who blasphemes against the Son will be forgiven; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” This refers to the person who rejects the works of the Holy Spirit and the almighty power of the Holy Spirit.

«Χριστέ μου, βοήθησε το παιδάκι μου να πάει. Εγώ το βλέπω μέχρι τη γωνία, εσύ να το δεις παρακάτω. Τι παγίδες μπορεί να του έχουν, τι μπορεί να του φτιάξουν». «Χριστέ μου, κάνε αυτό το πράγμα, σε παρακαλώ», αντί να παρακαλώ, τον βλασφημώ από πάνω. Ε, πώς θα γίνει αυτό το πράγμα; Ως άνθρωπος, εάν ήτο ο άνθρωπος και σκέφτετο, θα μπορούσε ποτέ να ζητάει από έναν τον οποίον βλασφημεί; Να ζητάει από έναν τον οποίον... «Και τι του έκαμα εγώ του Θεού;» Μα και πότε σε ρώτησε ο Θεός εσένα; Πότε τον βρήκες ενάντια, τον Θεό;
ας τη λες το διάλογο. Που τόσο είναι. Αν αναζητηθούν λοιπόν αυτές οι κατάρες, αυτές οι βλασφημίες του καθενός, μόνοι μας θα πάμε κατευθείαν στην κόλαση. Δεν θα μας στείλει «πορεύεσθε», θα πάμε μόνοι μας. Αυτό είναι γενικότερο πνεύμα, να έχετε υπόψη σας. Δεν είναι μόνο ότι θα κολαστώ, ότι θα πάει ο καθένας μόνος του στην κόλαση. Πώς να σας πω ένα απλό παράδειγμα;
Τον λιθοβόλησαν. Σκεφτείτε τι κάνουμε εμείς από το Σάββατο το βράδυ μέχρι την Κυριακή το βράδυ. Τι βρωμιά, τι γίνεται. Σκεφτείτε πόσοι έρχονται εδώ, κύριοι, και βεβηλώνουν την Κυριακή και δυσκολεύουν τις γυναίκες τους ή τους άντρες τους να έρθουν εκκλησία. Γιατί δεν κάνουν εγκράτεια μια, δύο, τρεις Κυριακές; Τι, έπεσε η ζάχαρη στο νερό; Τι είμαστε εδώ πέρα; Θηρία είμαστε;
