Summary
The lecture presents repentance and confession as a divinely instituted sacrament through which sins must be honestly disclosed and forgiven. Confession is called a merciful mystery whose operation remains hidden, though its fruits are experienced as a cleansed conscience, spiritual freedom, and heavenly joy over repentance. This authority is said to continue through apostolic succession from the Apostles to bishops and from bishops to duly commissioned priests and spiritual fathers.

We were together last night. You will remember that we spoke about the value of the Church and, more generally, about the Mystery of repentance, as well as the matter of attending church.
What was said yesterday provoked certain reactions, one might say, because, as I understood, there is a lack of knowledge about these matters. So this evening I would like to shed some light on the subject, insofar as our Lord permits, so to speak.
We should understand that these things being said are not our own. They belong to Him in whom we say we believe, and in whose name we make the sign of the Cross. The truth is that when a person sins, he fears no one—not even God Himself. Shamelessly, he sins before his angel, before his God, and before his Saint. And often, given what young people have become today, they even do these things in front of others. This makes matters still more difficult when the time comes for them to confess these things, to bring these poisons out from within themselves. Then they resist.
They look for every other path and every other way of putting matters right except the proper one. Christ is clear: sins must be confessed. There is no other way to put them right. Now, where you are to confess them, how you are to confess them, and why—that is another matter, and we shall shed light on that as well. A sin cannot be paid off; sin is not settled by payment. Nor can just anyone deal with sins. People cannot deal with their own sins, and ordinary people who have not been commissioned for the forgiveness of sins cannot deal with them either. Let me give you a simple example.
A spiritual father, for example, may hear the sins of thousands—tens of thousands—of people during ten, twenty, thirty, or forty years of ministry, yet he cannot forgive even one sin of his own. The man who forgives another cannot forgive himself. Does that not strike you as strange? Basil the Great says that when a physician falls ill, he calls another physician to examine him. Indeed, several physicians may gather in consultation around his bed. And when I have an illness, I go to the appropriate person, to the physician, and tell him about it. Would I tell just anyone and expect him to tell me what is wrong with my heart or what disorder my stomach has?
Why are you telling me? Am I a physician? Do I have the ability or the knowledge? I can do nothing for you. You must go to the person who has been appointed for that work. We act this way in every area of life, and often we pay dearly to obtain good results. Yet look at the absurdity of people. A man has his own baker, his own butcher, his own shoemaker, his own tailor, his own barber, his own dentist, his own internist—he has this one and that one and another. But he has no spiritual father. And he pays all the others dearly. ‘I pay a little more, but I get something good. I pay a little more, but he makes my clothes well.’ All that is well and good for the body. But what about the soul? The physicians of the soul take no money.
Is that what you call cleverness? Do you not understand that something else is at work here, that someone else is deceiving you and suggesting ways that produce no good result? Does it not strike you as strange that you will tell your girlfriend about a sin that you refuse to tell your spiritual father? You are ashamed to tell your spiritual father privately about a sin you commit, yet you speak about it openly in the coffeehouse. You tell others, discuss it as though it were some heroic deed, and encourage people to imitate you. You say it in front of children and young girls. Does that not strike you as strange? How can you tell everyone else, yet refuse to go and tell your spiritual father? Who brings this about? The priest? No—Satan.
Here is a second point. There is a demon with two characteristics. In Holy Scripture it is called ‘deaf and mute.’ We encounter such a case in a demon-possessed child who, it says, had a deaf and mute demon. What does ‘deaf and mute’ mean? We too have this demon: we hear many things, but we do not obey what we are told; and although we say many things, we do not speak where we ought. The demon binds our tongue when we are about to speak to the priest. It releases our tongue when we are going to speak to others. Why? Because if you tell another person about a sin, he learns it and may commit it too, and so the sin multiplies. But if you tell it to the duly commissioned priest, the sin dies. It is erased from Satan’s records.
That is why a person may talk all day long, his tongue moving like a typewriter from morning until night, yet when he stands before his spiritual father he becomes mute and speechless; he is not permitted to speak. Many people even go to confession, but afterward, when they are asked, ‘Did you say everything?’ they answer, ‘The priest did not ask me about the things I left out.’ The physician did not ask you either. Yet you go and wear him out: ‘You know, doctor, it hurts here too. And you know, doctor, when I take this medicine, it makes me dizzy. And you know, doctor… and you know, doctor…’ He did not ask you, but you tell him all the same. Why do you not speak here? Who is it that puts it into your mind not to tell these things? These are not accidental occurrences, my dear friends. First of all, these things were not invented by men. Men did not invent them.
Was it these Fathers who invented them? No. Christ Himself instituted this Mystery of repentance and confession, which the Fathers call the merciful Mystery, the Mystery of God’s love for mankind. If this Mystery of repentance and confession did not exist, Saint Isaac the Syrian asks, who could be saved? Who could be saved? No human being has ever lived in this world without sinning. Only One is sinless. ‘You alone are without sin; Your righteousness is righteousness forever, and Your word is truth.’ We are liars; we are deceitful. We sin in word, in deed, and in thought. And Job’s description is entirely true when he asks: can a man born of woman possibly be without sin?
Even if a person’s life on earth lasts only one day, he is a sinner. God alone is sinless. Elsewhere it says that man drinks iniquity as though drinking from a cup. Do you hear those who say, ‘I have neither stolen nor killed’? Those who appoint themselves as judges of their own case, declare themselves righteous, and pronounce themselves sinless? Those who issue their own certificates of good conduct, as I told you last night, and imagine that they have connections or friends in Paradise? Listen: when a person stands before God’s scales, he will be found wanting; when measured by God’s measure, he will fall short. God does not measure or weigh as we do. If you have the Old Testament at home, open the Book of Daniel.
Find the passage where Belshazzar, the son of King Nebuchadnezzar, was once drinking wine before a thousand nobles. Darius the Persian was besieging him from outside, but Belshazzar had shut himself securely inside Babylon, with enough food stored for two, three, or five years. ‘Let him strike as much as he likes!’
That evening he was making a public mockery of sacred things before the whole company. When he did this, a hand appeared upon the wall and began to write. Everyone there saw a hand, though they could not see who was guiding it, and it began writing. They were terrified. The revelry stopped, and a deathly silence fell. ‘What is this?’ The king’s legs began trembling like pipes. All color left his face. ‘What is this?’ He summoned the learned men, the Chaldeans, and the wise men to interpret what had been written. Not one of them could do so. All their joy vanished. Then the queen came and saw a king who could no longer stand on his feet.
She said to him, ‘O king, live forever.’ There was the king falling apart, yet she told him to live forever. His life was already slipping away, and still she wished him long life—just like our own empty words when we tell someone, ‘Many years!’ as though we possessed years to give away. ‘Do not be troubled,’ she said. ‘We have a wise man in the prison. Send for Daniel and have him brought here.’ Daniel came. The king said, ‘Interpret this for me, and I will adorn you with golden ribbons and golden chains,’ and so forth. Daniel answered, ‘Keep your gold. The interpretation comes from God. Therefore, the glory, honor, and worship belong to Him, not to me.’ Then he read the words and said, ‘I will put this into simpler language for you: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.’ What does this mean? ‘Your kingdom has been weighed in the scales of God and found wanting.’
Your kingdom has been measured by God’s measure—not by the measure with which your girlfriend, your dear husband, or your dear wife measures and weighs you. No, it has been measured by God’s standard, which is very different from man’s. A human being cannot grasp God’s righteousness or the standards by which God measures a person. He does not measure as we do. We see the outward appearance; God sees the heart. We see the results; He sees the motives. We cut off the branches and talk about the branches; He speaks about the roots and pulls out the roots of the sin. And so Daniel told him, ‘You have been measured and weighed and found wanting. This very night your kingdom will come to an end, and Darius the Persian will come.’ But how could Darius the Persian possibly enter?
‘We are secure. We are inside a fortress.’ In those days there were no airplanes and no bombs. How could it happen? Yet it happened. Darius the Persian diverted the river outside the city, because a river flowed through Babylon. He redirected it away from Babylon, entered through the riverbed that very night, and caught King Belshazzar like a helpless little donkey. At that very moment, the revelry, the joy, and the good wishes seemed to have risen beyond the third heaven. That was how men measured things. But God measured differently, and the outcome was entirely different, because He sees differently. Many people believe that they can conceal their sins, somehow settle them, or escape justice.
You may escape the public prosecutor, the policeman, the school supervisor, the teacher, or your spiritual father—you may escape everyone. You may even evade the notice of your wife, your husband, your superior, your brother, or your brethren. But you will not escape Christ. In old churches, above the iconostasis and the Beautiful Gate, beside the image of the Mystical Supper, there used to be an iconographic image—and it can still be found today in certain shrines—of an ear, an eye, and a hand writing. What does this mean? It is the eye of God, which sees everything. It is the ear of God, which hears everything you say—not some secret arrangement of ‘Come, light, and fall beside me.’
Friends, worldly justice catches flies, like a spider’s web, but lets the wasps escape. The eye of God sees you, the ear of God hears you, and the hand of God writes everything down. And one day, everything will be brought to light. If a person knew that at the very moment he sins, whether alone…
…or in the presence of others, whether one person or many, there are three recorders writing it down, he would not sin. Whenever a person sins—whether in word, deed, or thought—three witnesses record it. First, the devil writes it down with malicious delight. Second, the conscience records it. And third, my angel records it. Does no one know these things? The conscience reproves you because it knows, and nothing can be hidden from it. Where will you leave your conscience? Will you close the door and leave it outside? Truly? Will you disconnect its telephone and tell it, ‘I cannot hear you’? Wherever you go, it will reprove you. It will remind you and speak to you about what you have done. You yourself cannot escape it. The angel also writes it down. Three witnesses are recording it.
When a person does evil, three record it; when he does good, two record it. His angel and his conscience write it down, but the devil does not. The devil cannot bear to see anyone doing good, and he does not record it. He records every ugly deed, even its smallest details, but he does not record the good. So that these sins may disappear from those records, so that the conscience may find relief, the angel may rejoice and announce it in Heaven, and there may be joy over one sinner who repents—and so that the sins may be erased from Satan’s records—listen to what Satan himself admits. I have a recording on cassette of a demon-possessed man. One of the priests of my church asked him, ‘Tell us, what happens in confession?’ He did not want to answer. The priest said, ‘I command you, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, tell me what happens in confession.’
It said, “You fools! You think that when you go to confession, you are confessing to the priest. It is not the priest who hears your confession. Of course, there is a priest before you, whether his name is Manolis or something else; but the Lord is there, and Michael and Gabriel and the Archangels. It is to them that you confess. Yet even at that very moment we struggle to keep you from telling everything. We fill you with shame and make you forget. ‘I forgot to mention that,’ you say afterward, and so two sins remain written in our records; we hold on to them.” “And what happens to your ledgers?” “To our sorrow, we see that our ledgers, which had been black, have become white. How this happens, I do not know.”
“Your sins are erased from our records when you confess. We do not understand this; it is a mystery.” A person does not know how God cleanses the conscience, yet the conscience itself receives assurance. He enters the confessional feeling as though he weighs a hundred and fifty tons—afraid and ashamed—and when he comes out, he is like a bird ready to fly. He knows at once that something has happened. A mysterious power has acted upon him and taken away all those nightmares, all those fears, and all those inner burdens he carried. He does not know how they disappeared, because it is a Mystery. That is precisely why it is called a Mystery. Why are the Mysteries called mysteries? Because we know their effects without knowing how they work. We do not know what takes place within them.
The word comes from the Greek verb myo, for those familiar with such things: I close my mouth; I cannot tell you. “I behold a strange and wondrous mystery: the cave is heaven, the Virgin the cherubic throne.” How this came to pass is a mystery. We do not know the manner of it. And there are many such things, as you yourselves know. A mother brings her child home from the maternity hospital, and the child grows. Have you ever heard the child creaking at night as it grows? Yet she tells the seamstress to leave some extra cloth at the hem, because the child will grow and the garment will not fit next year. Does she not say this? Of course she does. But how does the child grow taller? We see such things in the body, yet people want to explain spiritual realities. Listen to what our Church says: “Every soul is given life by the Holy Spirit and is made radiant through purity.”
“And is mystically sanctified by the Triune Unity.” Mystically and sacredly—beyond our understanding. How do your nails grow, and how can you cut them without pain, though they grow out of flesh that does feel pain? How does that happen? Let a doctor come and explain it. It simply happens. How, you ask? Mysteries surround us. And yet someone wants to explain exactly how the priest’s epitrachelion cleanses sins! Go in humility, tell him the burden of your sins, and you yourself will experience it personally. Then you will say to another, “Go, and when you come out, you will have your own assurance.” This is precisely why Christ, through the Psalmist in the Old Testament centuries beforehand, said, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
If I begin describing to you the grace of one of these Mysteries, I will not be able to convey it unless you taste it yourselves. No matter how often I tell you that honey is sweet, unless you put even a fingertip of it into your mouth, you will not know what honey tastes like. That is why Scripture says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” The Greek text does not say “the Lord is Christos,” but “the Lord is chrestos”—good—with a different vowel. The Lord is good. You need Him. Taste Him, put His teaching into practice, follow Him, and you will discover for yourselves what this means. If you ask me today whether I believe, I could tell you that I do not merely believe. “What, Mr. Panagopoulos? Are you an unbeliever?” you will ask. No. “Then why do you say you do not believe?” Because I know.
I know Christ. “Have you seen Him personally?” I have seen Him in my life; I have seen Him in my conscience, in His callings to me, and in my work. I know Him. I have personally experienced Christ. So taste Him, all of you who have not yet tasted Him, so that you may truly know. Whatever sin you commit, your conscience will always tell you that it is sin. Perform every good work in the world, from righteous Abel to the end of the ages, and you still will not erase a single sin of your own. The sins committed by man, who, as I said, drinks iniquity like water, can be forgiven—but not by just anyone. I told you that even spiritual fathers cannot forgive their own sins, though they forgive the sins of others. And James has spoken to them about this.
The Protestants take that verse, fix it firmly in their minds, and make a great commotion over it. That fine saying is addressed to spiritual fathers: “Confess your trespasses to one another.” That is the starting point. You are a spiritual father and he is a spiritual father; each must confess his sins to the other so that both may be forgiven. It is not addressed to us laypeople; it was written for spiritual fathers. This verse from James, over which they make such a fuss, says, “Confess to one another.” Yes, he said that spiritual fathers are to confess to one another. To us, Christ has given other instructions. He has entrusted the matter of our sins to others who have authority to deal with them. Since you have given me the opportunity, would you like me to bring forward the evidence for this, in addition to what I said last night? Listen. Christ rose from the dead. On that same day, according to Holy Scripture,
He appeared five times; according to Tradition, six times. Holy Scripture says that Christ was seen first by Mary Magdalene, second by the myrrh-bearing women, third by the disciples, fourth by Simon, and fifth in the evening, when the doors were shut. Thomas was absent when He stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Scripture records these five appearances. But there is also a sixth, preserved by the Church: Christ was seen first by His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. His Mother was the first to receive assurance of the Resurrection, as we sing to the Most Holy Theotokos: “The Angel cried to her who is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin; again I say, rejoice.” Why? “Your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day.” She learned of it first.
For reasons of divine economy, the Holy Spirit did not have the Apostles record this in the Gospel, lest the report appear to come from Christ’s immediate family and therefore not be accepted. For when the news spread that “Jesus has risen,” and people asked, “Who said so? Where did you hear it?” the answer would have been, “His mother.” And they would have replied, “Ah, His mother! Of course she would say that He had risen.” So it was not recorded. The report had to come from outside His immediate family, but our Church has preserved this tradition. That is why I tell you that it was the fifth appearance according to Scripture and the sixth according to Tradition. Take it whichever way you prefer. Concerning this appearance, the Evangelist John says in the twentieth chapter: “Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week”—the Greek word opsia means evening—
at dusk, in the evening—“when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews,” in the Upper Room, which unfortunately is in the hands of the Muslims today; I have it among my slides and will show it to you—“Jesus came and stood in the midst.” He entered though the doors were shut. Did the angels, then, need to lift the stone so that He could rise? Some people say so. Western religious art even shows an angel lifting the stone and Jesus coming out. The angel did lift the stone, but so that the myrrh-bearing women could see that Christ had risen, not so that He could rise. Christ had risen during the night, and the women went there in the morning.
The stone was lifted for them. Could Christ not have left the tomb without that? It was not lifted so that Christ could rise, but so that they might see that He had risen. Our Church says, “Though the tomb was sealed, You arose, O Christ,” and, “As from the Virgin, not harming the seals of her virginity.” Just as He preserved His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, as Virgin, entering and coming forth as God, so too He left the tomb untouched and sealed. Its seals and barriers remained, while He arose as God. And He entered though the doors were shut, stood in their midst, and said, “Peace be with you.” “When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side”—His proof of identity.
The wounds in His side and hands were the evidence, the assurance of who this Jesus was. “Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.’” And He continued: “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” With all the authority, rights, and power with which I was sent here by My Father, I now send you, because in a few days I shall depart. I send you with the same authority and the same power of God. “And when He had said this, He breathed on them”—He breathed on them—
and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” For what purpose? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” What do we see here? As soon as He returned from Hades, He instituted the Mystery by which sins are bound or loosed for sinners. What else do we see? Before Pentecost, He gave the Apostles a special gift of the Spirit: the authority to bind and loose sins. Christ possessed this right and authority. If we read about the paralytic who was lowered through the roof, you will remember what He said. Seeing their faith, He said, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” What did the wicked scribes and Pharisees say within themselves? “Who is this who forgives sins? Forgiving sins is God’s right alone. How can this man forgive sins?” As God, He knew their evil reasoning within their hearts. “Which is easier,” He asked, “to say, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” They had brought the man to be healed, so naturally they wanted the second; the other was invisible. Who could see his sins, or see that they had been erased? “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He told the man, “take up your bed and walk.” And the man took up his bed and walked.
Christ, then, imparted to the Apostles the authority to forgive sins: “Receive the Holy Spirit and carry out this ministry. Those whom you forgive will be forgiven; those whom you do not forgive—those whom you judge should not be forgiven—will remain bound.” What did the Apostles do with this authority? They gave it to their successors. They ordained Timothy, Titus, and other fathers of the early Church. Read the Apocalypse and you will find many of them. Read the apostolic writings. These passed it on to others, those to others, and those to still others, and this succession continues to the present day. If we wish to investigate the matter, then, we can proceed as follows:
“Father, you put on the epitrachelion and hear my sins. Where did you receive this right and authority?” “My bishop gave it to me.” At once he can show you a document from his bishop, called a letter of authorization, which grants him this authority on the bishop’s behalf. I did not know that I would be speaking to you on this subject. Otherwise, I would have brought such a handwritten letter of authorization issued by Saint Nektarios of Aegina about ninety years ago. In it, he gives an abbot authority both to forgive sins and to tonsure nuns and monks. You would see how this matter works and how the Church has preserved it. A priest has no authority of his own. He receives that authority from his bishop.
“And you, bishop, where did you receive it?” The bishop is a successor of the Apostles, while priests are successors of the Seventy Apostles; Christ had the Twelve and the Seventy, and He Himself was their Head, the Head of the universal Church. Do you wish to remain within the Church? Then you will commemorate the Ecumenical Patriarch, accept the bishop, and accept the priest. If you reject any one of these, you are outside the Church. Outside the Church there is no salvation. Salvation is found within the Church, as I told you last night when explaining the parable of the so-called Good Samaritan. Christ entrusted those who had fallen among robbers to the inn and to its innkeepers.
The robbers are the demons, and we are those who have fallen among them. They leave us half-dead: they leave the body alive but put the soul to death. “Bishop, where did you receive this authority?” “Three other bishops ordained me—this one, that one, and another.” “And where did you three who performed the ordination receive the authority?” Behind those three you will find nine more. Keep going back in this way, asking where and how each received it. Eventually we shall reach the Upper Room and Christ Himself, who first breathed on the Apostles and gave them this authority. That is why no priest may hear confessions without the authorization of his bishop. The bishop possesses the right to do so, but because he cannot serve everyone himself,
since there are thousands of people in a diocese and only one bishop, he selects the most experienced and spiritually strong priests, those able to bear the weaknesses of others. A person must be strong to support another. When one falls, the other must be able to hold him up; if you are not strong, he will drag you down with him. Therefore, not every priest receives this authority. For this reason, a Christian may not always find a spiritual father who outwardly satisfies him—someone of whom he can say, “Yes, this is a good and holy man; I will go to him.” If you can find such a man, then go to him. But if you cannot, it does not matter, provided the priest has the bishop’s authorization. Go and confess.
“Forgive sins? But is that priest not a sinner himself? Can he forgive sins?” That is the first question. He is not the one who forgives your sins. Christ forgives your sins through him. Pay attention to what I am about to tell you. If you were Roman Catholic, then you would need to find someone you considered good and holy to forgive you, because do you know what a Roman Catholic priest says when hearing a confession? “I absolve you.” What does our priest say when you kneel and he places the epitrachelion over you? He raises his hands toward heaven and says: “O Lord, who commanded Your Disciples and Apostles that whatever they bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever they loose shall be loosed,”
“this Your servant also”—not I—“do You, O Lord, loose from his sins.” Christ forgives your sins. “You, O Lord.” In a Roman Catholic wedding the priest says, “I marry you.” What does your sinful Orthodox priest say? “The servant of God, so-and-so, is crowned unto the handmaid of God, so-and-so.” He is crowned—not “I crown him.” In whose name is he crowned? In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit sinful? The Roman Catholic priest says, “I baptize you.” What does the Orthodox priest—the sinful priest—say? “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Am I the one doing it? My body is merely a wire through which the power passes.
The wire may be galvanized, or it may even be rusty, but the current still passes through it. And John Chrysostom says, “God does not ordain everyone, but He works through everyone.” The people cry out, “He is worthy!” Perhaps he is not worthy; perhaps they cry it only because he has a good voice. What difference does that make? “He is worthy!” Many times, we do not know whether they truly are worthy. Has God Himself recorded this man in His book as a priest, that man as a bishop, and another as a deacon? Ask God. “God does not ordain everyone, but He works through everyone.” A police officer may come, for example, who is a disgraceful man—a drunkard, an unbeliever, an atheist—living unlawfully even toward his own family, and so forth. You ask him for his credentials. He puts on the insignia of his office and, in the name of the Republic and the state, and by the authority given to him as an officer, he says, “You have acted in this way; I am placing you under arrest.”
That is an exercise of authority. It is not really that man who puts you there; the law puts you there, and the public prosecutor puts you there. Is that not so? He has authority. In His all-wise love, God established this Mystery. The first thing He did when He came forth from the tomb was to institute this Mystery. And He instituted it, I repeat—and I want you to pay close attention—for our instruction. How, then, can you, a human being, reject it and try to reach the Kingdom by some other method and along a road of your own? People say that all roads lead to Rome, but not every road and every method leads to Heaven. There is only one.
There is one true way given by the Son: the observance of the Mystery of metanoia, repentance, and confession. For, as I told you last night, some people have repented but have never confessed, while others have confessed but have never repented. They confess on Great Wednesday so that they can receive Holy Communion on Great Thursday or sometime at Pascha, yet they remain exactly the same. Then they wait until Christmas, or until the Dormition fast, and do it again. Others have repented and say, “I should not have done that; my conscience troubles me,” but they have never confessed it. “I do not know why I keep doing this,” they say, but they have never confessed that either. Few are both repentant and confessed, struggling along the road toward the goal and striving to remain upon it. The devil has cast some off the road on one side and others on the other.
He holds both captive: one through refusal to repent, and the other through refusal to confess. Repentance alone is not enough. A person’s metanoia, his repentance, begins with a decision—the very decision the prodigal son made when he found himself in misery: “I will arise and go to my father,” and so forth. Then, “He arose and came to his father.” The second “arose” has an “and” before it: “And he arose and went.” And what did he do before his father? He said what he had resolved to say while he was still far away: “I will go and say to him, ‘I have sinned against Heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants,’” and so forth. He kept that resolve. He got up, departed, and openly declared it. From the moment he declared it, everything changed. His father took off his former garment—the filthy garment of the pigsty, of sin, fornication, adultery, and prodigality.
God knows how much filth we ourselves carry today. That filthy garment is taken from the prodigal when he confesses. His father says, “I will make it white,” and afterward brings him inside to partake of the feast, the fatted calf. Yet, unfortunately, during these days of Pascha many went and sat at the table of the fatted calf and ate, as Saint Gregory the Theologian says, without changing their filthy clothing. Although Baptism had given them a garment pure white, they had soiled it over so many years. Still they went, sat down, ate, made a show of it, and left until the following year. Yes, you ought to have gone—but where was your repentance? Where was your confession? Who changed your garment? Who took away the filthy one and clothed you in white? This happens only in the confessional. When a person is baptized, he is immersed in the baptismal font and afterward we put a white garment on him. But instead we look to see whether the godmother is beautiful
and what gifts she brought. People do not understand the meaning of that baptismal cross hung around their necks, for which they will one day be called to account in the Kingdom of Heaven—both the one who placed it there and the one who received and kept it. At that moment a confession of faith was made, although many later come to despise their godparents. Have you ever listened to the words confessed by the sponsor? He says, “I renounce Satan, and all his works, and all his pomp, and all his worship.” Then he turns and unites himself to Christ three times, saying, “I unite myself to Christ.” Tell me, did he not go there to say precisely this? From that moment he declares war on Satan. And when the child grows older,
when he reaches ten or twelve years of age, his mother and father sit him down with them to watch that demonic box in the house. They say the child must not be disadvantaged in the eyes of the world—as though all the countless generations of earlier centuries were deprived because they had no television and had not brought corruption into their homes. When the child grows a little older, that Judas-like box mixes fairy tales with fornication and adultery, Christ and Crosses, and then displays notices from the Diocese, and so forth. And what happens? The child turns and says to his Christ, “My God, how can I escape from the hands of those who should be my own? I will go with the devil. Yet once, through my sponsor, You said that You were with me.”
Do you know what that tunic is, that white garment they put on you? It is the divinely woven robe. What does the Church tell us about Adam, who weeps on the Sunday of the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, the Sunday of Cheesefare—while we occupy ourselves with carnival festivities, as though we were reluctant to give anything up?
“Wretched as I am, I have stripped myself of the divinely woven robe.” I, a descendant of Adam, am naked in this world. Christ comes and is crucified, and He clothes me once again in my nakedness. This grace is symbolized by the baptismal cloth, like a burial shroud. The cloth placed around us at the baptismal font shows that I have not remained in the nakedness of Adam and Eve. I have put on Christ, and in this garment I shall appear before Him. What do we sing during Great Week? “I see Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter.” What is this garment? It is explained in the twenty-second chapter of Matthew. Those of you who read it know; those who do not should read it. It is the parable of the wedding feast.
In Matthew there is a great parable about a great banquet. A man prepared a joyful celebration and invited many people, and a great crowd came in. Before the festivities began, the host went to look at the guests seated at the tables. At one table he found a man who had no wedding garment. He said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” And the man, it says, was speechless. You know, this custom continues in the East even today. When people hold a great celebration, the guests do not enter wearing their own suits. At the door there is a wardrobe attendant, and each person who enters is given a garment to put on.
Whether he is rich and has fine clothes or poor and has none, he is given a robe, and inside everyone is dressed alike. But this man, out of pride, refused to take off his own little suit. “Why should I accept anything from him?” And the host said, “Seize him!” Do you know what command he gave? “Bind him hand and foot and cast him out, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.” This is what will happen to those who remained naked in this world. Christ clothed them through Baptism, but they threw that garment away and ruined it. Many repented and returned, and the Angel was commanded, as in the parable of the prodigal son, “Bring out the first robe.” That robe is made white in the blood of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, as the Apocalypse says. Who will accomplish these things?
We behave in this way and still expect to live in Paradise. People say, “If only I could die and find rest,” as though everything above had already been prepared comfortably for them. Yet what will they say when they are chastened? What will they say when they find themselves in the burning heat? Let us humble ourselves, then, and do what He says. Sins are forgiven in the Church. Sins do not melt away. Sins are not washed away by themselves. Sins do not rot and disappear. Where must sins be brought? They must be brought forward and disclosed in repentance, and through repentance they are forgiven. I will tell you about an incident that occurred in the village of Kyriaki, outside Livadeia. It happened ten or fifteen years ago—I do not remember exactly—and by the grace of God I have carried out this ministry for thirty years. I was there shortly before Christmas, around the feast of Saint Spyridon, though I do not remember the exact date.
A priest was with me. I spoke to the people while he heard confessions for four days in that village. When we left, he said to me, “I will tell you something.” We boarded the train, and he told me of an astonishing event. Of course, I knew neither the people nor their names; he was simply telling me that something extraordinary had happened. Among those who came to confess during the four days he spent in the village was a very old woman, bent over with age. Her cheeks were completely black, deeply black on both sides. He did not ask her why her cheeks were black. But then he remembered to ask, “Grandmother, how long has it been since your last confession?”
“From that point onward, tell me everything you have done. If there is something you vaguely remember and are unsure whether you confessed it, mention that too. But if you remember clearly that you have already confessed something, you need not repeat it.” She said to him, “Sit down, Father, and let me tell you. I am ninety years old now. I have lived in this place since 1889, and I have never confessed.” “And all this time you have been receiving Holy Communion?” he asked. “Yes, I receive Holy Communion.” “How did you manage that?” “That is the secret. Just outside the village there is a small chapel of the Honorable Forerunner. For almost seventy years now, I have gone every evening to tend its oil lamps.
“Whenever I wanted to receive Holy Communion, whether at Pascha or Christmas, I would go and stand before my master, Saint John, and say, ‘My master, Saint John, you know what I have done. May I go and receive Holy Communion?’ And then I would certainly receive. When you came here this year, I began to think about confession, yet still I did not want to confess. So I went again to the chapel. A longing moved me, because I wanted to light the oil lamps and receive Holy Communion at Christmas. One evening at dusk I went to light them. I stood again before Saint John and said, ‘My master, last year you helped me here; help me again to receive Holy Communion.’ At that very moment, Father, two hands came out from Saint John’s icon and slapped me twice.”
“I fell to the floor and lost consciousness. Then I heard a stern voice say, ‘Did Christ send me to forgive sins, or did He send the priests? In seventy years, have we not made this clear?’” There was no priest nearby in the village of Saint Luke, as those who know the area will understand, to hear her confession. So the old woman fell there, and her family began searching for her. They expected her to return home after tending the Saint’s oil lamps, but she did not come. Her grandchildren and children searched one house after another, but she was nowhere. They wondered whether she had fallen on the path. They followed the path up and saw the chapel standing open. When they entered, they found the grandmother lying on the floor, freezing cold.
She could not speak. They called others for help, removed the chapel door, laid her upon it, and the young men carried her down to the house on their shoulders. They placed her near the hearth, warmed her, gave her a little drink and whatever else they had, and eventually she revived and told them what had happened. “He slapped me,” she said. “For all these years, was I the one sent to hear confessions?” Saint John baptized once with a baptism of repentance. That baptism was different, just as Christ’s Baptism was different from ours today. Christ received the baptism of repentance, the baptism of John. Our Baptism is the Baptism of the Holy Trinity, in the name of the Holy Trinity. One is different from the other. Time does not permit me to say more, but, if God allows, we shall return to this subject. For now, I want you to pay attention, not merely to the things I have said, but to what Christ Himself declares: on the evening of Pascha, after His Resurrection, He instituted this Mystery. See whether you have the power to abolish it.
Do you still claim that you will meet Him while you trample upon His law? I want to believe that no one would be so irreverent as to think that he can trample upon Christ—for when he tramples upon Christ’s law, he tramples upon Christ Himself—and still expect to meet Christ tomorrow. We shall stop here and continue the presentation about the Holy Land that we began last night. And, God willing, tomorrow evening and on the following evenings, if God permits us to remain here until Tuesday night, we shall say more about this same subject and about whatever else God allows.

Ένας πνευματικός, επί παραδείγματι, ο οποίος ακούει τις αμαρτίες χιλιάδων ανθρώπων, δεκάδων χιλιάδων ανθρώπων μέσα στη διακονία του, δέκα, είκοσι, τριάντα, σαράντα χρόνια που θα είναι πνευματικός, μίαν αμαρτίαν δικιά του δεν μπορεί να συγχωρεί. Αυτός που συγχωρεί άλλον δεν μπορεί να συγχωρεί τη δικιά του. Δεν σας κάνει περίεργο αυτό; Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος λέγει: όταν ένας γιατρός αρρωστήσει, καλεί άλλον γιατρό, λέγει, για να τον δει. Και κάνουν και συμβούλιο γιατροί στο κεφάλι του. Και όταν έχω μια ασθένεια εγώ, θα πάω στον ενδεδειγμένο, στον ιατρό, να την πω. Θα την πω στον τυχόντα και να μου πεις εμένα ότι η καρδιά σου παρουσιάζει αυτό, ο στόμαχός σου έχει αυτές τις ανωμαλίες;
Αυτοί οι Πατέρες; Αυτός ο Χριστός ο ίδιος θέσπισε αυτό το μυστήριο της μετανοίας και της εξομολογήσεως, που οι Πατέρες το λένε φιλάνθρωπο μυστήριο. Εάν δεν υπήρχε το μυστήριον αυτό της μετανοίας και της εξομολογήσεως, πού ο σωζόμενος, λέγει ο Άγιος Ισαάκ ο Σύρος, πού ο σωζόμενος; Δεν υπήρξε άνθρωπος που δεν αμάρτησε στον κόσμο. Ένας είναι ο αναμάρτητος. «Σὺ μόνος ἐκτὸς ἁμαρτίας ὑπάρχεις· ἡ δικαιοσύνη σου δικαιοσύνη εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ ὁ λόγος σου ἀλήθεια». Εμείς είμαστε ψεύτες, είμαστε κατεργαραίοι. Αμαρτάνουμε εν λόγω, εν έργω, εν διανοία. Και αληθεύει απόλυτα ο χαρακτηρισμός του Ιώβ που λέγει: άνθρωπος που εγεννήθη από γυναίκα, είναι δυνατόν να μην αμαρτήσει;
Εμετρήθη η βασιλεία σου με τη μεζούρα του Θεού, όχι μ’ αυτή που σε μετράει και σε ζυγίζει η φιλενάδουλα σου, ο ανδρούλης, η γυναικούλα σου. Όχι, του Θεού, που διαφέρει πολύ των ανθρώπων. Δεν μπορεί να συλλάβει ο άνθρωπος τη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού και τα μέτρα που μετράει ο Θεός τον άνθρωπο. Δεν μετράει όπως εμείς. Εμείς βλέπουμε το φαινόμενο, λέει ο Θεός. Αυτός βλέπει την καρδία. Εμείς βλέπουμε τα αποτελέσματα. Αυτός βλέπει τα κίνητρα. Εμείς κόβουμε τα κλαδιά και μιλούμε για τα κλαδιά. Αυτός μιλάει για τις ρίζες και βγάζει τις ρίζες αυτής της αμαρτίας. Λοιπόν, του λέγει, εμετρήθης και εζυγίσθης και ευρέθης ελλιπής. Ακόμη, απόψε το βράδυ, του λέει, η βασιλεία σου τελειώνει. Και έρχεται ο Δαρείος ο Πέρσης. Μα πώς θα έρθει ο Δαρείος ο Πέρσης;
Πλούσιος και έχει καλά ρούχα, είτε είναι φτωχός και δεν έχει, βγαίνει μια κελεμπία. Και μέσα είναι όλοι ομοιόμορφοι! Αυτός, από τον εγωισμό του, να μην βγάλει το κουστουμάκι του μέσα. Τι παίρνω από αυτόν; Και του λέει: «Τον έπιασε, αρπάξτε τον». Και ξέρετε τι εντολή έδωσε; «Δήσαντες», λέει, «χέρια και πόδια. Ρίξτε τον όπου ο βρυγμός και ο τριγμός των οδόντων». Αυτό θα πάθουν οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι έμειναν γυμνοί στον κόσμο τους, που τους έντυσε ο Χριστός με το βάπτισμά Του, αλλά αυτοί το πέταξαν, το αποκάνανε. Πολλοί μετενόησαν να ξαναεπιστρέψουν, να δοθεί εντολή στον Άγγελο: «Φέρε την στολήν την πρώτην», του ασώτου υιού, και εσύ που τον μεταγράφει από το μω σκότος της Θεθώ, από το Αρνίον το εσφαγμένον, κατά την Αποκάλυψη, από καταβολής κόσμου. Ποιος θα κάνει αυτά τα πράγματα;
