Summary
The lecture teaches that forgiveness and sanctification come through divine grace acting in the priesthood, not through a priest’s personal holiness. Christ’s words about receiving His messengers support the claim that rejecting the priesthood is inseparable from rejecting Christ, who works through it to unite humanity with God. The lecture concludes that shame is another satanic obstacle to confession, because the shame absent during sin returns when a person is ready to repent and disclose it.

In our last talk, those of you who were with us will remember that we spoke about the great and merciful Mystery called “Repentance and Confession.” We had reached the point where, as best we could, we were trying to help those who use the supposed sinfulness of priests as an excuse for not going to confession. And we had paused at that classic example from Basil the Great.
This helped the elder understand how things truly stand: the work of forgiving a person’s sins, and of sanctifying him more generally, is accomplished not through the personal holiness of the clergyman, but through the grace given to the clergy. The clergyman does not act as a private person, but as an instrument in the hands of God. You might think of him as an electrical wire. It is good for the wire to be polished and galvanized; but even if it is rusty, so long as it is connected to the outlet, it still carries electricity. We know this, yet we imagine that if the clergyman is a saint, he can impart grace to us, but if he is not a saint, then he is, so to speak, devoid of grace. And so we say, “Why should I go to Church? Why should I receive antidoron—blessed bread after the Divine Liturgy—from…”
“…the hand of such-and-such a man?” These things too are part of Satan’s plan to deceive people, and he has caught many in this trap. I confess that, in the modest ministry I have carried out over these thirty years, I have met many people who were trapped by this method of Satan. That is why, wherever I go, I spontaneously feel the need to speak and to offer examples from the life of this Church, so that I may free people from this snare, because this is no laughing matter. Among the arguments I would like to present in order to help and encourage those who, for one reason or another, remain far away, I would like to offer one account that I found in a manuscript from the Holy Mountain. It concerns Saint Mercurius.
There was once a priest serving in the church of Saint Mercurius. One evening this priest sinned—he sinned, as we would say. He was careless with his wine, and his drunkenness led, in any case, to a sin of the flesh… At any rate, the next day he got up and went to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. After the Liturgy had ended, an angel rebuked him. The angel said, “Wretched priest, what is this that you have done today?” The priest replied, “Who are you to rebuke me?” “Can you not see me? I am an angel.” “Remain where you are; I bind you.” And the angel said to him, “Then you too are bound: you shall not taste death unless I forgive you.”
As a result, the angel lost the use of his wings and remained fixed behind the Holy Altar, bound there by that sinful priest. The priest, meanwhile, lived for 350 years without dying. He left that place, lived elsewhere, and continued serving as a priest for financial reasons, because he had no other way to live, and so on; yet still he went on living. Then one day, 350 years later, while he was with the local bishop for the feast of Saint Mercurius, the bishop related some remarkable things about the saint.
That priest, who was there among the other priests, said to him, “Your Eminence, I do not know these things merely from tradition; I know them firsthand. What I am telling you happened 350 years ago—or rather, I myself was there.” This was a strange thing indeed. At any rate, the bishop took him aside and questioned him closely about what had happened and what the matter was. The priest told him all the details: “I truly did sin. This and that happened; an angel rebuked me; I bound him, and he bound me in return.” Then the bishop said, “That angel must still be there.” “I do not know,” the priest replied. “You must go,” said the bishop, “and forgive one another.” I am not telling you this for the sake of what follows. I am telling you that a sinful man…”
“…deprived an angel of the use of his wings, because the angel is a servant both of man and of the clergyman. We do not know what we are, and above all we do not know what the clergy are or what power they possess. The world does not know these things. People read only one part and ignore the rest. They do not know the history or tradition of the Church, or how these things truly stand. I am not telling you this so that anyone may become proud—certainly not. I will also tell you the most important part of the account. The bishop said to him, “You must go and forgive one another, because the angel must still be bound there.” “Oh, come now,” he replied. “Could anything still be there after 350 years? Would even the church still exist? It must be ruins by now.” “No matter,” the bishop said. “You must go, because your own matter must also be resolved.” “I cannot go,” he replied. “I have neither the money nor the strength for the journey.” “I will provide them,” said the bishop. So the bishop took responsibility and brought what was needed.
Following the tradition and asking directions along the way, they traveled there and eventually reached the area where the clergyman vaguely remembered the church had once stood. He recognized some large trees that had been there, and by using them to orient themselves, they slowly made their way to the ruins of the church. There was little more than rubble. They went forward, and indeed they found what remained of the Holy Altar; and behind it stood the angel, just as the priest had left him 350 years before. When the angel saw him, he said, “Wretched priest, are you still alive?” “I am, because you bound me. And are you still there?” “I am still here, because you bound me. Come, let us forgive one another, so that I may return to my work, my appointed place and ministry, and you may finally go to your rest.” It was proposed that the elder should first ask the angel’s forgiveness. “Forgive me,” he said. But the angel replied, “I must not forgive you first. If I forgive you, you will immediately turn to dust, while I will remain bound. You forgive me first, and then, rest assured, you will no longer remain bound.” So the priest forgave the angel in the name of the Holy Trinity, and immediately the angel was set free.
Then the angel said, “And now may you also be released, and may God forgive you.” At once, only the priest’s skeleton remained; all the rest of him turned to dust in an instant. The bishop, who had witnessed this, was overcome with awe and turned toward the angel. The angel had also spoken gracious words about the bishop, praying that this effort and deed of his might find mercy in the sight of God, because through what he had done he had freed the angel and released the priest from his bonds. May he find mercy in the sight of God for this good deed. Then the bishop took courage and said to the angel, “I would like…”
“…you to chant a little, so that I may hear how you chant in heaven.” The angel replied, “I would very much like to, but if you hear me chant, you will die. You will not be able to bear it. Still, I will grant your request. I will ascend to the third heaven and chant to you from there, so that you may hear.” The angel departed, ascended, and chanted to him from there. The melody was such that the bishop fell to the ground and lay there for many hours. Afterward he rose, departed, and wrote down this event. A person considers such things fairy tales; yet this life itself is a fairy tale, and he himself is living a fairy tale, if he would only examine the matter in the final analysis. He cannot explain his own existence; he has no firm ground on which to stand and cannot interpret anything—and yet it is true. It is true.
The clergy possess tremendous power, so never set yourself against them. Understand this: in simple terms, my dear friends, a clergyman who is upright in his calling is like a glowing coal. Do you pick it up? No. Why? Because it will burn you. If, for one reason or another, he is not as he should be, he is still a blackened coal. Do you pick it up? No. Why? Because it will soil you. So leave him alone: if you set yourself against the clergy, you will either be burned or blackened. Be at peace, glorify God, and ask Him to preserve the clergy among us, because we shall learn their true worth when we die. We cannot understand it now. If there is no clergyman to bury us, and no clergyman to attend to us beyond the grave until the end of the age, then we shall understand the value of the Most Holy Theotokos and of the priest…”
“…even if he is sinful. Then we shall understand. For we imagine that everything ends at the grave and that we have no need of anyone. Yet it is the priest who receives us when we are born, with the beautiful prayers for the mother after childbirth; who then accompanies us with the prayers of naming, the prayers of Baptism, the prayers of the blessing of water, and the prayers of the Mysteries in general. It is he who commits us once more to God with the words, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today.” And afterward he continues to care for us through the Divine Liturgies offered here, through memorial services and supplications—the work the Church performs through the clergy until the end of the age. For, if you will permit us to speak one evening about death and the things that follow, the record of each person is not closed at the moment of death.
Those who think death is the end are mistaken. The grave is not the end; it is the beginning of a life that has no end. I have told you this simply to show you the power possessed by the clergy, however sinful a clergyman may be. I have also spoken of this in passing on some evenings, when presenting the things you see in the slides I show. Once I showed the Prophet Elijah sitting there by the Brook Cherith, as Scripture says, being fed by a raven. Does this not strike you? Here was a man with the power to bind up the heavens under God for three and a half years and command that there be no rain; a man who three times called down fire from heaven and consumed bands of fifty men, and even consumed a whole burnt offering of God. Yet God sent him a filthy bird—a filthy raven, with claws and beak that fed on carrion—to nourish the zealous Elijah.
Does that not strike you? Was there no cleaner bird? Was there no swan, nothing else You could send to this man? And you, Elijah—why do you not protest? Why do you say nothing? Why do you not send it back? This is the point. Elijah remains there without complaint and reflects deeply. He considers what God sends him, who is sending it, and what he needs. What does God send him? “Bread and meat,” Scripture says, in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening. Where does the raven find them? Where does it go shopping to bring them to him? From where else could it have taken them? From what bakery did it get the bread, and from what butcher did it get the meat? These provisions came from the Holy Spirit.
What are the “bread and meat” mentioned in the scriptural text? What do they signify? The Body and Blood of Christ. The bread and the meat point to the bread and the Body of Christ, the Bread of Life. They are a type—a typological image of the true gift. That is what fed Elijah there, and he accepted it without complaint. He was not concerned with who the messenger was; he cared about what the messenger brought. When a postal worker brings you a letter, do you ask to see his credentials? Do you investigate who he is, whether he has divorced his wife, whether he lives unlawfully, whether he is sexually immoral, blasphemous, or an atheist? No, you immediately look to see whether there is anything inside. That is what matters. What interests me is who sent it. Did my beloved send it, my friend, or my director? That is what I look for. Who the postal worker is does not matter. This is a great lesson.
That black raven standing behind the Prophet Elijah tells us: there you have another image of the clergy, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Do not look at who the clergyman is. That is a matter between him and God—how long God chooses to bear with him. Who are you to interfere and pass judgment? “He who rejects you rejects Me.” We have not paid attention to these words. “He who rejects you,” He says, “rejects Me—Me, who bear with you and sanctify through you.” Take a sinful priest, however sinful you please, and have him read the prayers over water: it will never spoil. Read them yourself; gather all the cardinals in the world and all those whom you consider saints—great, worthy, and learned—and have them read over the water. The water will decay and stink unless you add salt. Therefore, if God accepts that priest, how can I presume to reject him? “He who rejects you,” He says, “rejects Me.”
“And he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” “I believe in God, not in the clergy.” Really? So you do not believe in the clergy or in Christ, yet you claim to believe in God? Christ says these things; I do not. These are the plain, uncompromising words of the Gospel. Thus even the raven teaches us, in a practical way, to respect the messenger. Through this messenger God sends His gifts today and sanctifies His people. Do you know what the clergy mean for humanity? Not merely for the Greek people, and not merely for Christendom, but for all humanity. Do you know what it means to have a bridge between heaven and earth? All nations, all unbelievers, and all who oppose Christ receive mercy because of the Orthodox clergy, whether they are willing to understand it or not. The earth receives mercy through the clergy.
There is a small book attributed to a certain Agathangelos, known as the Prophecy of Agathangelos. Many people have it, and it circulates widely. Find this book and read it. He wrote around the year 1200 in Sicily. If you read it, you will find him lamenting over Germany, because it would become Protestant and drive out the clergy. “Woe to you! Alas, alas, Germany, for you have removed the clergy of the Lord from your midst, and mercy from heaven is no longer shown to you.” The world receives mercy through the clergy. The clergy stand between God, the earth, and mankind. In one place our Christ says, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There is the Father, Christ, the Son. “No one comes to the Father,” Christ says, “except through Me.” And if you will permit me…”
“…I would add: no one comes to the Son, so as to be sent to the Father, except through the clergy. Unless a clergyman pronounces, “The seal,” baptizes a person, hears his confession after Baptism, gives him Holy Communion, and sanctifies him, no one comes to the Son in order to go to the Father. Through the clergy, Christ makes human beings His brothers and sisters. On my own, I cannot become a brother of Christ. He has appointed someone to fulfill this role, so that people may be “added to those who were being saved”—added to the Church. We can also learn the respect and reverence due to the clergy from another solemn event. Sadly, many of us, when we see a clergyman, imagine that we are looking at our enemy. But the one who hates the clergyman is Satan.
And above all, he hates the Orthodox clergyman—the Orthodox clergyman. Satan fears no one as he fears the Orthodox clergyman and the Orthodox epitrachelion. These are what he fears. He holds all the others in his hand and plays with them like worry beads. But when he sees an Orthodox clergyman, however sinful that man may be, he hates him. That is why, as you know, see, hear, and read, everyone is arrayed against the Orthodox clergy. You read in the newspapers what is happening in our country. You read and hear that today people have gone so far as to mock and exploit the Church even in the theaters. Let me give you one example that points to the reverence due to the clergy: the entry of our Lord into Jerusalem.
Once, in Spata, as the gathering was ending and I was making my way out through the crowd, an elderly, tall gentleman approached me. That evening the subject had been the parable of the Prodigal Son, and I had spoken a little about the clergy, to help people come to Holy Confession. For they cannot come to the fatted calf without metanoia and Holy Confession. Then I heard a hoarse voice beside me, with the tone of a lawyer—as I later learned he was one. “You said a great deal about those gentlemen tonight, Mr. Panagopoulos.” I turned and saw a serious elderly man. “Which gentlemen did I speak about?” I asked. “Those gentlemen—those gentlemen.” “Yes, but which gentlemen?” “Those people there, those people.” He could not bring himself to say “the clergy,” “the priests,” or “the bishops”—anything at all.
He would not even let the word pass his lips. Then I realized that I had said too little. I had not had time to say all that I should have said and could have said. But I could not understand how an educated and intelligent man could have failed to grasp the meaning. “I speak this way,” I told him, “because a little donkey teaches me a lesson on the road from Bethany to Jerusalem.” So he stopped; other people stopped as well, the doorway became blocked, and none of us could leave. I stood there and explained to him what I shall now explain to you. As we read in John, and as we know from Palm Sunday and Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Christ
left the house of Lazarus the following morning, Palm Sunday morning, and stopped at a village called Bethphage. He told His disciples to go to the village opposite and bring Him a young donkey, so that He might ride it into Jerusalem. They went and brought Him the young donkey, the colt. They laid their garments upon it—their coats, as we might say—and the Lord mounted it. Riding the little donkey, He passed through the so-called Golden Gate, which today stands sealed in the wall of the Temple of Solomon, and entered Jerusalem in triumph. The welcome He received deeply disturbed the Jews. Indeed, they accused Him of coming as a ruler
and a king; they called Him proud, and so forth. The people did everything they could to honor His passage. Imagine the road beneath Him: besides the palm branches and flowers spread upon the ground, young women had laid down their shawls and garments—everything they had. The Lord rode upon the donkey, and the donkey walked proudly over all that had been spread beneath it, carrying Christ into Jerusalem. Had we been there, we might have asked the people of Jerusalem: “Why all this splendor? Why all this expense and effort? You scatter these things on the ground for a young donkey to tread upon? Are you not ashamed? Do you not understand?”
Their answer, I think, would have been: “Sir, we did not spread these things, offer them, and gladly sacrifice them for this little donkey, but for the One whom the donkey carries. Once He dismounts, the donkey will return to the manger for straw, to the storehouse, to its stable. Whatever is being done, and whatever honor is being shown, is for the One whom this young donkey bears upon its back.” Does that tell you nothing? If this young donkey received honor and was counted worthy, so to speak, of applause and a glorious welcome, what about the priest, the bishop, or the deacon, who also bears his God and carries Him? Does that tell you nothing?
Should nothing at all be done for him, at least for the sake of the One whom he carries? No honor, no consideration whatsoever? Is he worth nothing? Then why does Christ condescend to be carried by him? Do we understand? There is much evidence for the person who desires to understand; for the person who does not, nothing is ever enough. Do you know what is related concerning that young donkey? After it had carried Christ, He dismounted and went “as a lamb before its shearer” to be slain on Friday afternoon in place of the lamb that served as the type. The young donkey returned to Bethany and died there. To this day, the stone upon which Christ stepped when He mounted that donkey is still there, and a small shrine stands there as a memorial.
Indeed, even today the abbot of the Holy Monastery of Bethany and Achninaon commemorates this event. What I have told you is not the only example; there are many things one could say on this subject. And we also know the truth of this from negative cases, from the accounts we have received.
Catholic clergy had read prayers over her, but nothing happened. She broke everything and left nothing intact, until they were forced to give way and call a priest. One night, another elderly woman went secretly, and they arranged everything so that no one would see them bringing an Orthodox priest into the house. At the far end, in the upper part of Tinos, there was a retired elderly priest. She begged him to come and “read the prayers,” as we say in everyday speech. The elder put on a worn and greasy epitrachelion, which he had been carrying under his arm, and set out with her. When they reached the neighborhood, she led him into a narrow lane she knew. “But, my child, this is where the Latin woman lives. Where are you taking me?”
The elderly woman replied, “Yes, that is where I am taking you. You people read different prayers,” she said. “She too is a person of God. Please, show her some love and come.” She persuaded the elder. Meanwhile, when the woman had gone to ask the Orthodox priest to come, the demon inside the girl began threatening them: “If you bring that goat here, I will tear him apart! I will pull every hair from his beard, one by one! Why do you want to bring that goat here?” And it went on and on without stopping. When the elder entered through the courtyard gate, the demon hurled a chair at him from fifty meters away. Had the elder not moved aside, it would have struck him. The chair shattered into a million pieces. The demon began screaming, filling the place with cries and commotion—things it had never done when the Catholic clergyman was there. Nothing at all had happened then; he simply stood there reading. But the elder, who was evidently experienced in such matters, put on his little epitrachelion and began to read the prayers.
Before long the demon came out, after many screams and convulsions. The nineteen-year-old Latin girl was healed. This is what an Orthodox epitrachelion does. Satan knows what an Orthodox epitrachelion means. He knows very well the power it possesses. We do not know, because perhaps we have never needed it. In our malice we may often say, “If I were...” But if you ever need it, then you will understand the harm you have done to its ministry. Then you will understand. From all that we have said, which can encourage a person to make use of the clergy for the work that must be done, I want you to know that Satan will not give up. He will place other obstacles before that person. Many people eventually manage
to overcome this obstacle and reach the confessor, only to face another obstacle: shame. A person should be ashamed when he is about to sin, yet he feels ashamed only when he is about to confess. I remember something I once read, and I want to tell it to you because it applies very practically to our subject. An elder was once hearing confessions, while many people waited outside his hut. Suddenly he came out and addressed someone whom the others could not see. “What are you doing over there?” he said. They looked at one another. Who was he speaking to? They could see no one. “You there—the tall one! What are you doing?” “Something has happened to the priest,” they said, and began making the sign of the Cross.
“You there, the tall one! What are you doing? What are you handing out? In the name of the Holy Trinity, speak!” Suddenly a tall figure appeared among those who were waiting. They now saw that someone truly had been there and that the priest had been right. “What are you?” the elder asked. The figure stood motionless with its head bowed. “What are you? Say it aloud so that everyone here may hear.” It answered, “I am the devil.” Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos! The devil here, at the place of Holy Confession! Where else would the devil go—to his vineyards? He will come here to keep you from speaking, to make you forget, to hinder you, and to make you turn away from the door. Many have turned away from that door, especially men. “I have forced you away from there. Now tell everyone: what are you doing? What is that? I saw you handing something out.” “Yes,” it said, “I was giving them something.” “What were you giving them? Say it so that they may hear.” It replied, “I was giving them something I had taken away.” “What had you taken from them?”
“I had taken away their shame,” it said. “And what are you doing now?” “Now I am giving it back.” “Why are you giving it back?” “So that they will be ashamed and will not confess their sins, and thus they will remain mine.” You say, “Do you understand me?” do you not? Do you understand, gentlemen? Do you understand? This is Satan; this is the devil. I should be ashamed when I am about to commit sin. Yet when I sin, I may turn off the lights, close the windows, go somewhere far away, park my little car somewhere, and so forth. But you are sinning before God. In old churches, above the Holy Doors—the Royal Doors—one sometimes sees an ear depicted
along with a hand and an eye: the eye of God, which sees all things, both hidden and manifest, around corners, in darkness, and far away; the hand of God, which records everything; and the ear of God, which hears everything. I also want you to know this: when we sin, three record it. The conscience records it, the angel records it, and the devil records it. But as I told you, when we do what is good, only two record it: our conscience and our guardian angel. The devil does not record the good, understand? He forgets it. But he records the evil. Therefore, when we sin, we sin before God. Where will you hide from His face? Where will you flee? If you fly far away, He is there. If you descend into the abyss, He is there. If you rise into the air, He is there as well. Where can you go away from God? Can you hide?
Whom are you deceiving? What will you gain by keeping these things within you? Why do you burden yourself? Even today, many people remain without Holy Confession and try to obtain an absolution prayer by stealth. “Father, please read a prayer over me so that I may receive Holy Communion.” What is this? What sort of prayer do you expect the priest to read when you pressure him in this way? Is it a prayer of forgiveness? “No, I have done nothing.” Then it should be called a prayer of congratulation: “Well done—you have done nothing!” But the Church has no prayers of congratulation. The Church has prayers of forgiveness. Do you suppose that what you heard at Holy Unction on Great Wednesday, with its prayers for forgiveness, settles everything? No. You must vomit the sins out; you must bring them forth. That is what benefits you. The priest does not want to learn filthy details for some unseemly satisfaction. But I want you to know this
as well: afterward, go and ask him, “Father, what did I tell you?” He will not remember. Men of the Spirit, commissioned by the grace of the Holy Spirit and endowed with the grace to receive the sins of others, possess this blessing. Woe to them if they absorbed every poison, every evil, and every fault within themselves; they would die the next day. They remember nothing, and that gives them rest. Otherwise, they could not bear to hear these things, because they share in the pain, the evil, and the sins. As Paul writes, “Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?” Who suffers such a thing without my suffering it too? That is how it is. So shame is not the issue. You must sit down and speak. And if the confessor asks for a detail so that he may understand the situation and know what sort of person stands before him, then you must tell him.
You will say it plainly: “I am sexually immoral. I am a thief. I have acted dishonorably. I stole. I wronged my household. I wronged my wife. I took the property of a helpless person. I contrived this; I did that. I defrauded the state. I blaspheme,” and so forth. I have transgressed the Ten Commandments, the moral teachings, the Sermon on the Mount, and so on. Yet some woman may answer, “I have not killed anyone; I have not stolen anything.” I have written a small book called The Great Mystery of Metanoia and Holy Confession. In it I include a list of six hundred sins, and even then I have barely touched the subject.
We deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Christ, that is, is not with us. If we say that we have no sin, we must remember that Christ dwells among sinners, not among supposedly sinless people—for no such people exist.
The devil is very skillful at deceiving us in these matters, and we must be careful, because many people confess the small things while keeping back the great ones. That is where they come to ruin. If someone fails to confess certain things unintentionally—because many truly do not remember them—that is another matter. He may not remember a particular thing, but he has confessed everything else that he does remember. But when a person deliberately hides something because he is ashamed, because it is serious, or because the confessor may require him to make restitution and put the matter right, then even the other, lesser sins remain unforgiven. One account relates the following incident. A great lady—for some people imagine that great ladies do not sin—had committed a sin.
Apparently, sins are only for those below, for the infantry, and not for those in the air force.
Among her other, lesser sins, she had committed a grave sin which she was ashamed to confess. One day, a monk came by—an Athonite monk, let us say—and she found an opportunity to approach him privately, because she wanted to confess it there in the Egyptian desert. She went to him. He had a young disciple with him, and he said to him, “Move farther away, so that I may speak with the woman.” They sat down on two stones, the young disciple went some distance away, and she began her confession. At one point, the young man glanced back from afar and saw a strange sight. He saw little snakes coming out of the woman’s mouth and being cast away. This made a great impression on him. I do not know whether he had ever seen such a thing before, but he fixed his eyes on them and stood watching. Then, at one point, he saw something else as well. In any case, he continued to watch.
At one point the elder noticed him looking in their direction. He said nothing then, but intended to correct him when they had finished. When the confession was over, the lady rose and left, making her way down toward the public road. The elder called the young disciple and said, “Come here. What did I tell you? Did I not tell you to move farther away and not listen?” “I was not listening, Elder.” “But you were looking this way.” “Yes, it is true that I was looking, but allow me to tell you why.” “Why were you looking?” “I saw that whenever this woman said something, little snakes came out of her mouth.” “Those were her sins,” the elder said. “Yes, Elder, they were coming out—but two or three times, a large one also appeared.”
“A large one. Once it tried to come out and hung partly outside her mouth, but then it went back in. And as soon as that large one went back inside, all the little ones that had come out went back in as well, and then she left.” The elder understood that she had some sin which she was ashamed to confess, and that she had gone away without making a complete confession. “Run,” he told him. “Speak to her and bring her back.” The young disciple ran after her, but when he reached the road, he found her lying dead on the left side of it. He returned, and the elder asked, “Is she dead?” “She is down there by the road,” he replied. The elder was overwhelmed and fell to his knees. “My Christ, will this be charged to me as well? Must I answer for this too? I did not do my work properly; I did not help her. Forgive me, illumine me, and deliver me from this temptation. What is to happen now?” Before he had finished praying, a bear began climbing the path up from the road.
It came and stood before him, and then it spoke: “Elder, do not be distressed and do not trouble yourself. I am the soul of the lady who confessed to you a little while ago. Among my sins I had committed one grave sin. Three times I tried to tell you, but because of my shame I did not confess it, and I left. When I reached the road below, I died, and Christ sent me to Hell.” It left behind a cloud of black soot and disappeared. That is the account. So if a person does not make a full and honest confession, Christ will not take into account even the sins that were confessed. Do you understand? There is also something else that happens in such cases: many people go to confession even though they have not put things right in their souls with certain other people.
We bear hatred, a passion, or a quarrel against another person or another family. Yet we go and confess without saying anything about it, and we imagine that everything is now in order, even though we have not been reconciled with the other person. We think our sins have been settled. My beloved, I believe that many of us ought not to say the Lord’s Prayer. You will ask me, “Should we not say that beautiful prayer which we learned at our grandmother’s knee?” Yes—because we so often stumble over the words, “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Do you know what this means in our case? For many of us, the prayer would have to be changed to say, “And do not forgive us our debts, just as we have not forgiven the debts of others.”
You know that this is true of many people. There are even many whom their spiritual father urges simply to exchange a greeting with their fellow human being. For we say, “Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” If we do not love one another, we cannot even recite the Creed. “But he has not learned his lesson,” someone says. You must forgive if you want to be forgiven. “So also will My heavenly Father do to you,” the Lord says, “if you do not forgive from your hearts.” For we often forgive with our lips, but not with our hearts. “Forgive me; I am going to receive Holy Communion.” “You are forgiven,” comes the reply. But the proper reply is: “What is there for me to forgive? I have never borne any malice against you.”
As one human being, you once caused me pain; but I cause pain to God. How can I ask God to forgive me if I do not forgive you? Go with God’s blessing, and never let such a thing enter your mind again. But instead we say, “Leave me alone now, because I am going to receive Holy Communion”—as though, if I were not going, I would devour you. My beloved, our Christ gives us the supreme example: He found an excuse even for those who crucified Him. We have not been crucified, Glory to God. Someone may have taken our vineyards or our property, spoken an insulting word, or slandered our family. But no one has crucified us. Yet Christ found an excuse for them and said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Do not rush to tell me that He was Christ and could do this, whereas we are merely human. I will bring the Protomartyr Stephen before you and ask: Was he Christ? Was he not a man?
He too found an excuse for them and said, “Do not charge them with this sin.” What, then, can we say? Here I want to make a small distinction. It is true that many people do not take revenge. They say, “I will not take him to court; I have left him to God.” As though God were waiting for you to give Him instructions! He leaves the man to God only because he himself cannot punish him severely enough. That is why he leaves him to God.
Do not leave him even to God for punishment. “What do you mean? Should not even God make him pay, my child? Should not God hold it against him?” No. Say instead, “Go in peace; I forgive you.” For when we say, “I will not avenge myself,” this is what we often mean.
It means: “I cannot punish him severely enough myself, so I will send him to God, who will punish him severely.” That is what it means. But the Protomartyr Stephen said, “Do not charge them with this sin. Do not count it against them; regard it as though it had never happened. I will never demand an accounting from them.” This is the kind of Christian God desires, and this is the kind of Christian formed here in the Church. Such a Christian is not formed in the marketplace, at home, or in someone’s embrace. He is formed within the Church, especially with the help of this Mystery of Mysteries, this loving and essential Mystery of which I have spoken: metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession. One more thing: I want to help all those who, until now, have made an incomplete confession. They have confessed only little things, superficially—mere trifles—while leaving the great, weighty sins untouched. Pay attention to this. Sit down and examine yourself. Are you waiting for the priest to confess you?
The priest is not a medium, a fortune-teller, or a reader of coffee cups. You know what you have done. Nebuchadnezzar demanded of Daniel, “You will tell me both the dream I had and its interpretation.” He did not say, “I dreamed this and that; now tell me what it means.” He said, “You must tell me the dream itself as well.” That is what we expect today. How can the priest know what I have done? I must speak; I must first confess myself, and then present my sins to the priest who has the authority to bind and to loose. There is one kind of sin that is not forgiven: a sin left unconfessed and unrepented. This is a question many people have. All sins are forgiven, yes—except the sin for which there is no repentance and
the sin that remains unconfessed. Any sin for which a person does not repent or which he knowingly refuses to confess will not be forgiven; it will still be there. And sins are not paid off—keep that in mind. They do not decay and they are not forgotten. Satan will bring them forward and present them to Christ. In the end they will ask him, “Are these sins his or not? Did he commit them or not? Did he confess them?” “No.” “Then he belongs to me.” Christ cannot say otherwise. At that moment He cannot simply pardon us, however much He may desire to, after giving us this entire opportunity. Let me give you an example. It may sound excessive, but I cannot find a stronger one. Suppose that every good deed ever done by humanity—from righteous Abel to all the righteous at the consummation of the age—were credited to me and entered into my record.
Even all the good deeds of humanity could not pardon or erase a single sin of mine. Sins are not paid off; sins are forgiven. They are forgiven, not paid for. Do you want your good works to bear fruit and not be lost? Then make sure that your sins are wiped away through metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession. Repentance and confession are like the soaping of clothes that you women do for your garments and ours. Holy Communion—the blood of Jesus Christ—is the rinsing. If you take a garment from the dirty laundry and try to rinse it without first washing it with soap...
you produce a slimy, repulsive mess. So it is with the souls of people who go without confession to receive Holy Communion on special occasions—perhaps for good luck, for a gold tooth, for a soft drink, or simply until next year—on the great holy days of Christendom. They enter through one door and leave through the other, imagining that they have secretly obtained sanctification and a ticket to Paradise. The ticket for our return to Paradise is given through metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession. “Through repentance I too have found the way.” There is no other road. Repentance is what makes the human person whole. A person’s ticket is prepared in the confessional and stamped in red ink—with the blood of Christ.
It is technically impossible for one priest—especially here, where you have so few priests—to meet the needs of all these people within the short span of the holy days of Great and Holy Week, Christmas Eve, or the eve of August fifteenth. By a harmful custom inherited from the years under Ottoman rule, people have become accustomed to receiving the Holy Gifts only three times a year. At that time they had a reason: the people were under oppression and could not do otherwise. But today there simply is not enough time. Those who have understanding and desire the salvation of their souls must find a priest during the rest of the year and arrange to make a full and honest confession. If they do not wish to do so here, then when they return to their homeland or go somewhere else, they should at least cleanse themselves of their past sins, so that afterward they need deal only with their present ones. There is no excuse in saying that the priest did not hear their confession, or that a priest read a prayer of absolution over them together with others.
The priest has the duty and the authority to read the prayer of absolution especially over those whom he knows and who know him—those who confess to him. As for people who do not confess to him, although the priest may read the prayer, they receive nothing. They receive nothing because they are trying to obtain the prayer by stealth so that they will not have to confess or find a suitable time and way to go to confession. The priest has the authority to place his hand upon and bless his own spiritual children, whom he knows and with whom he has an established relationship. He knows their spiritual condition, and he knows that if, for one reason or another, something should happen between confession and Holy Communion,
they will even telephone him and say, “Father, I fell into this sin. What do you advise? Should I approach the Chalice or not?” Even by telephone they can receive guidance and counsel. But when one, two, three, or five people who are known to the priest, who are his spiritual children and confess to him, come and kneel for the prayer, others slip in among them and kneel as well, hoping to obtain the prayer by stealth. They are mistaken. Christ is not deceived. Grace cannot be commanded, and if they have not confessed, Holy Communion will be unto condemnation. As I told you, the Prodigal Son took part in the mystical supper only after, through metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession, he had cast off the swineherd’s garment. They changed his clothing, put new shoes on his feet and a ring on his hand, and only then did he sit at the table where the fatted calf had been prepared. These are matters to which people must pay attention. Now, there are people who do not come to confess and receive Holy Communion because, as I told you, they regard clergymen as sinful, corrupt, and unworthy.
In the few minutes remaining to me, allow me to share some thoughts from the Apostolic Constitutions, which come down to us from the Apostles themselves, concerning how we should regard the clergy. We are quick to pass judgment. We discuss, condemn, judge, and bury priests, bishops, monks, nuns, and archbishops—often without being able to prove anything. From Book Two, chapter 36, of the Apostolic Constitutions, I offer you this prescription: “Do not judge a bishop or any of his fellow ministers.” Do not judge; judgment belongs to God. “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce, you will be judged.”
“Why do you judge your brother? You have made yourself a judge, though no one appointed you.” No court has appointed you. In chapter 35, section 10, of Book Two of the Apostolic Constitutions, the Apostles themselves say, “You shall not call him to account.” You are not permitted to criticize the bishop or scrutinize his stewardship—when, what, or where he acts; whether well or badly; whether properly or improperly. For he has as his judge the Lord God, who entrusted this stewardship into his hands and counted him worthy of Holy Orders of this kind. You must not defile your sacred mouth, it says, by speaking against the bishop in any matter, from any angle, or concerning any aspect of his ministry. It continues: “And the chief bishop, who is above all these,” is set above them all.
“The bishop is a minister of the Word, a guardian of knowledge, and a mediator between God and us in our worship of Him.” The bishop, he says, stands between God and us. “He is a teacher of piety; after God, he is our father.” After God, to whom we say, “Our Father,” we may also speak of a father here on earth: the bishop is our father. “He has begotten us anew through water and the Spirit, bringing us into adoption as sons. He is our ruler and leader; he is our king and governor; after God, he is our earthly god, and as such should receive honor from us.” Go ahead, then, and try to erase what these men say! Listen to this as well: “The one who receives suffers no harm,” even if the minister himself is wicked; he will answer for that. But as for me who approaches, it says, “The one who receives suffers no harm.”
“Even if the one who offers—the bishop or the priest—should appear unworthy, the spotless Mysteries are not defiled.” Even if we suppose that the priest or bishop is the most wicked of all men, you will still receive grace, whoever that man may be. “The failings of priests must not be shamefully spread abroad,” it says. You must not expose people’s errors and transgressions or parade them before others. “Nor should such things be taken as a pretext for scandal.” You know, these are the words of Constantine the Great, spoken to the bishops who brought him accusations against other bishops at the First Ecumenical Council. And he said:
“Even if I were to see a bishop committing adultery with my own eyes, I would cover the unlawful deed with my imperial purple.” I would take off my purple robe and cover him and the unlawful act, so that the sight of it would not harm those who witnessed it. “Do not say, ‘The one offering is sinful; he is condemned and unworthy, and therefore the grace of the All-Holy Spirit does not descend.’ Do not entertain any such thought. There is Another who knows what is hidden and examines all things. For even if the one offering were an angel of God and offered the bloodless sacrifice, yet you approached unworthily, not even the angel could cleanse you from your sins.” Judas himself bears witness that this saying is true. “For he received the divine Bread from the Master’s own spotless hands; but because he received it unworthily...”
“Satan entered into him.” You need not concern yourself with whether the bishop is worthy. Your concern is to put your own soul in order.

Θα ήταν η απάντηση, νομίζω ότι θα ήταν η απάντηση: «Κύριε, δεν τα στρώσαμε, δεν τα διαθέσαμε, δεν τα χαλαλίσαμε για το γαϊδουράκι αυτό, αλλά γι' Αυτόν που φέρει επάνω αυτό το γαϊδουράκι. Όταν κατέβει Αυτός από πάνω, το γαϊδουράκι θα πάει στο παχνί για άχυρα, θα πάει στην αποθήκη, θα πάει στον στάβλο του. Ό,τι γίνεται και τιμή γίνεται, για Αυτόν που φέρει στην πλάτη του αυτό το ονάριο». Δεν σας λέει τίποτα αυτό; Αν το ονάριο αυτό έτυχε τιμής και αξιώθηκε, εν πάση περιπτώσει, όπως θα λέγαμε, χειροκροτημάτων και υποδοχής και τιμής της υποδοχής, ο ιερεύς ή ο αρχιερεύς ή ο διάκονος, που φέρει και αυτός αυτόν τον Θεό του και τον μεταφέρει, δεν σου λέει τίποτα αυτό;
χέρι και ένα μάτι. Το μάτι του Θεού, που τα πάνθ' ορά, βλέπει και στα κρυφά και στα φανερά και καμπύλης τροχιάς και στο σκοτάδι και στα απομακρυσμένα· το χέρι του Θεού, που γράφει τα πάντα, και το αυτί του Θεού, που γράφει τα πάντα. Ακόμη θέλω να ξέρετε: όταν αμαρτάνουμε, γράφουνε τρεις. Γράφει η συνείδηση, γράφει ο άγγελος, γράφει ο διάβολος. Και, όπως σας είπα, όταν πράττουμε καλώς, γράφουνε δύο. Γράφει η συνείδηση και ο άγγελος του ανθρώπου. Δεν γράφει ο διάβολος τα καλά, εντάξει; Τα ξεχνάει. Γράφει όμως τα άσχημα. Κατά συνέπεια, όταν αμαρτάνουμε, αμαρτάνουμε ενώπιον του Θεού. Πού θα κρυφτείς τώρα από του προσώπου μου; Πού θα φύγεις; Αν πετάξεις μακριά, είναι εκεί. Να πας στην Άβυσσο, εκεί. Να πας στον αέρα, πάλι. Πού θα πας απ' τον Θεό; Κρύβεσαι;
Σαν άνθρωπος με πίκρανες κάποτε, εγώ πικραίνω τον Θεό. Πώς μπορώ να ζητήσω από τον Θεό συγχώρηση, αν εγώ δεν συγχωρήσω εσένα; Άντε στην ευχή του Θεού, ούτε να το βάλεις ποτέ στο νου σου αυτό το πράγμα. «Άφησέ με τώρα, γιατί πάω να κοινωνήσω». Δηλαδή, αν δεν πήγαινε, θα τα με φάτε, θα τα με σκύψετε. Ο Χριστός μας, αγαπητοί, κλασικό παράδειγμα, βρήκε δικαιολογία για τους σταυρωτάς. Εμάς δεν μας σταύρωσαν, δόξα τω Θεώ. Μπορεί να μας πήραν τα αμπέλια, μπορεί να μας πήραν την περιουσία, μπορεί να είπαν ένα λόγο άσημο, μπορεί να κατηγόρησαν το σπίτι μας και λοιπά. Δεν μας σταύρωσαν όμως. Και εντούτοις αυτός βρήκε να πει: «Πάτερ, άφες αυτοίς· ου γαρ οίδασι τι ποιούσι». Μη σπεύσετε να μου πείτε ότι ήταν Χριστός αυτός και το έκανε και εμείς είμαστε άνθρωποι, γιατί θα φέρω τον πρωτομάρτυρα Στέφανο μπροστά και θα σας πω: αυτός ήταν Χριστός; Δεν ήταν άνθρωπος;
Πάει να πει ότι εγώ δεν μπορώ να του το βγάλω πολύ βαθιά και θα τον στείλω στον Θεό, που θα το βγάλει βαθιά. Αυτό πάει να πει. Ο Πρωτομάρτυρας Στέφανος είπε: «Μη στήσεις την αμαρτίαν ταύτην, μη τη λογαριάσεις, ως ανύπαρκτος». Εγώ δεν του ζητάω λόγο ποτέ. Αυτόν τον χριστιανό θέλει ο Θεός και αυτόν τον χριστιανό τον φτιάχνει εδώ, στην εκκλησία. Δεν γίνεται στην αγορά, δεν γίνεται στο σπίτι, δεν γίνεται στην αγκαλιά. Θα γίνει μέσα στην εκκλησία και μάλιστα με βοηθό το μυστήριο αυτό των μυστηρίων, το φιλάνθρωπο αυτό το μυστήριο και το κύριο που σας είπα, της μετανοίας και της εξομολογήσεως. Κι ένα ακόμη που θέλω: θέλω να βοηθήσω όλους εκείνους οι οποίοι μέχρι σήμερα έχουν εξομολογηθεί πλημμελώς. Έχουν εξομολογηθεί λίγα λίγα, επάνω πάνω, τα ψιψιψί, τα σουσουσού, και τα μεγάλα, τα τσεκούρια, τα έχουν αφήσει και υπάρχουν. Προσέξτε τούτο. Καθίστε και εξομολογήστε τον εαυτό σας. Περιμένετε να σας εξομολογήσει ο ιερεύς;
