Summary

Christ’s healing of the ten lepers shows that divine grace is received through obedient recourse to the priesthood, even when the command challenges human reasoning. Passages stating that those born of God do not sin describe freedom from habitual and willful sin, not absolute sinlessness, since Christians still fall through weakness and need forgiveness. Confession must be made to an authorized spiritual father, because mutual acknowledgment alone does not replace the priestly authority to discern, guide, and absolve.

And then, you know...

You will remember that our subject was the Mystery of repentance and confession, and more specifically, we had reached the point where the clergy stand in the middle, because the Mystery is not only repentance; it is also confession.

At this point I wanted to remind you of something that may help us with our subject. What business do the clergy have here? What business does another human being have standing in the middle? To what extent is this a matter between man and God? And yet this is how God has ordained it. This is not something of our own making. The direction is not human; it is divine. Let me help you understand, if you do not already know. Do you remember the occasion when Christ healed ten lepers?

They asked Him for mercy: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” His answer was, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” A strange thing! He did not heal them there and then. They were healed along the path of obedience. But they obeyed. They did not put human reasoning first. Why? Because if they had followed their reasoning, they would have died as lepers.

The command, the exhortation, was strange, just as it seems strange to us: “Why should I tell these things to the priest?” Yet they obeyed, even though, I repeat, the command was strange. “Where is He sending us? To the very people who drove us away?” For the priests had sent them outside the community. People do not know this because they do not read what they ought to read. They often read unnecessary things that are of no use to them. As the saying goes, they read to “kill time,” as though time were their enemy and had to be killed. They do not read what is useful and necessary. “They drove us away.” Yes, humanly speaking, they drove you away. They had been given that authority. I do not know whether you are aware that physicians are from God, scientists are from God, and medicines are from God, as the Old Testament, in the Wisdom of Sirach, tells us. Yet physicians had no judgment to offer in the case of leprosy. It was the one disease over which they had not been given authority. In cases of leprosy, the clergy, the priests, gave the judgment. Strange things, are they not? But that is how God willed it. Who can correct Him? Did He make a mistake? Could He possibly have made a mistake? The priests, then, had the command...

to permit or forbid the lepers to associate freely with everyone else. They were the ones who had ordered these men to leave their villages, their homes, and their families and to live outside, in the fields and the wilderness, where Christ met them. So they might have said, “Where is He sending us? These are the men who drove us away. Heal us first, and then we will go and show them that we are well. Let them give us a certificate so we can return home to our children and our wives.” But without first healing them, He said, “Go and show yourselves.” “But we showed ourselves to them before, and they sent us away.” Nevertheless, without a single objection, they set out toward the priests, and along that path of obedience they were cleansed.

One of them thought it right to return and give thanks. Christ then had occasion to voice a complaint that remains valid throughout the ages against an ungrateful people: “Were not the ten cleansed? But where are the nine?” There are not many of us who fit into this pattern of being grateful, a people who give thanks. We are stiff-necked. We only want to receive, without even saying thank you. We regard everything as our own. But how much of it truly is ours? This is the gesture, I tell you, over which people still stumble today. Those lepers did not stumble, and they were healed. So do not put your reasoning first. God does not act according to our directions, nor does He wish to act as we want, but as He Himself wills.

Many objections flow from this: “Are You not God? Did You not give that command? Why should we go to them when we have You here? If something must be settled, settle it Yourself.” And yet the answer is: “Although I gave the command and I am the One who heals, you must still go to them.” Suppose you receive a check and go to the bank. Do you take it to one of the bank’s shareholders to cash it? Do you go to the director and demand, “Who is the cashier? Who does he think he is?” No. You go to the proper employee, who sends you to the teller, and there you receive the money. You might say, “But are you not the director? Are you not a shareholder?” The answer is, “Yes, I am, but this is the appointed way.” Exactly the same applies to matters of the Church. My dear friends, leprosy is a type, a prefiguration, of sin.

In cases of leprosy, I say and repeat, only the priests were authorized to give a judgment. Since the priests alone gave the judgment, they were also the ones who issued permission for a person to associate freely with others. They judged according to the depth and color of the mark. If you have an Old Testament, read it, or make an effort to find an opportunity to do so. Read chapters thirteen and fourteen of Leviticus. There you will see God as another Hippocrates, teaching the priests how to make a correct diagnosis in cases of leprosy. You will throw up your hands in amazement. Do we truly trust God? Or do we trust some god fashioned by our imagination, our pride, our flesh, our self-interest, the world, and our own Satan? That is not the true God.

The true God is the God of the Scriptures, who states plainly how matters stand. We are called not to give Him directions, but to put His directions into practice. Since the matter has arisen in this way, I would like to take you through certain cases showing that, in the Old Testament, leprosy represents sin. If we go back to the encounter between God and Moses, to that first meeting when God called Moses to bring the people out of Pharaoh’s hands and lead them to the Promised Land, and so forth, we find the first test. When God told Moses to undertake this work, Moses weighed himself and found himself incapable and unworthy.

He was slow of speech. Moses was slow of speech; as we might say, he needed half an hour to get a word out. He thought the task depended on cleverness, as though he had to go and outwit Pharaoh, like some great lawyer who could talk him around and take the people away from him. Pharaoh had a strong interest in keeping the people there. He had about six hundred thousand laborers each day, people able to work who worked for nothing. You understand what a serious matter this was for Egypt’s economy. He had every reason not to let them leave. He held them as slaves, made them produce bricks, and set them to every kind of labor. Why would he send them away? Moses therefore thought that somehow he would have to persuade Pharaoh to surrender this people. So he said to God, “I am slow of speech.” God answered, “Take care. Do you think you cannot do this work?”

God answered him: “Tell Me, who makes the tongue? Who makes the ears? I make them. Do I not know that you are slow of speech? Forgive Me, but do you imagine that you will accomplish this work through cleverness? Put your hand inside your cloak.” Moses put his right hand into the fold of his garment. “Take it out,” God said. He took it out and was terrified to see that his hand had become white with leprosy. Where had that leprosy been? It had been hidden against his breast. “Put it back inside,” God said. He put it in again, then drew it out restored, leaving the leprosy behind. It was as though God were saying, “Sinful man, what work are you going to accomplish? I shall accomplish the work. You will simply go and serve it.” Further on, if we open the Book of Numbers, chapter twelve, we find the three siblings who figure so prominently in Holy Scripture: Moses...

Aaron, and their sister Miriam. Moses married without consulting them. As we would say, “He did not ask us; he married whomever he wanted.” He married a black woman, an Ethiopian, and they felt that this did them no honor. So behind his back they began pecking away at him incessantly, gossiping and speaking against him.

Aaron did not become leprous, although the two of them had plotted the whole thing together. He was not stricken with leprosy. Why not? We can go only so far in answering this: because he was the high priest, and the priesthood does not become leprous. The priesthood does not become leprous, however much we may sin, however much we may wish otherwise, however much pain we cause, and however much filth we bring upon ourselves. The priesthood does not become leprous. The priest may become leprous, but the priesthood does not. The high priest may become leprous, but the high priesthood does not. Many people say, “Am I supposed to kiss that man’s hand?” You are not kissing the man’s hand; you are venerating the grace given to him, if you understand. But when we are scandalized, we do not understand. In any event, although, I repeat, Aaron and Miriam had plotted it together, he was not stricken with leprosy. They appealed to Moses, pleaded with him, asked his forgiveness, and admitted, “Yes, we said these things; we did this,” and so forth. “But you are merely a man; pray to God for her.” God told him, “She will not be healed immediately. First she must fulfill a canon, a rule of penance. She will remain outside for a week.”

She remained for a week outside the camp, outside the settlement, in the wilderness. She fulfilled her canon, just as we too may be given one and told, “You will not receive Holy Communion for forty days, for six months, or for ten days.” So she remained outside, and afterward the leprosy left her. If we bring this down to the level of present-day life, the little tongue that works away behind another person’s back—the daughter-in-law, the mother-in-law, the son-in-law, the neighbor, and so forth—does nothing but cover the human soul with leprosy. Let us not deceive ourselves. God is the same yesterday, today, and unto the ages. Another case clearly showing that leprosy was a type of sin concerns Elisha and his servant Gehazi. If you read the Fourth Book of Kings, you will find the account there...

from verse seventeen onward, among the events following the Prophet Elijah. A leprous commander named Naaman, a Syrian from Syria, went down toward Jerusalem because he had heard from a young Hebrew girl, who had been taken captive, that he would be healed if he went there. The story contains a great moral lesson. In any event, he went, and Elisha instructed him to immerse himself in a river there called the Jordan. He told him to immerse himself seven times, and he would be healed. Out of pride, Naaman did not want to climb down from his chariot. Indeed, he said, “In my own country I have rivers greater than the Jordan.”

He named the Abana and the Pharpar, which were great rivers. “Could I not have bathed in them?” he said. “Did I have to come here to Palestine to bathe in the Jordan?” You may have the Abana and the Pharpar, but they do not remove leprosy. In the same way, today we have great rivers: one is called papism, an Abana; another is Protestantism, a Pharpar. But they do not remove leprosy. This little Jordan, with the seven Mysteries, is what removes the leprosy. “Go down, then,” he was told, “if you wish to be healed.” So he went down and immersed himself seven times. When he came up the seventh time, his skin, it says, was like that of a little child. You know how soft a baby’s skin is? It was like that. Leprosy is a terrible disease. It is vicious and violent, and it causes terrible harm to the person who bears it. In any event, Naaman wished to reward Elisha.

He wanted to pay him with money, garments, and other things he had brought with him. Elisha accepted nothing. His servant took this badly and entertained a temptation that appeared reasonable: “We did not ask him for these things; he is offering them to us. Why should we not take them?” In any event, Naaman departed with his men, and Elisha withdrew to his little hut. But the devil set the servant’s head spinning, and he ran after them until he caught up. They stopped, wondering why the young man was running, and came down from the chariot. “Is everything well? What has happened?” “Everything is well,” he said. “But some sons of the prophets have arrived from over there, and they have no clothing. So we thought you might give us some of those garments you are taking home unused.” “Gladly,” Naaman replied. He climbed down, had his men unload the garments and whatever else they could carry, and...

they turned back to carry them to the hut. But the crafty young man said, “Friends, this is far enough. There is no need for you to come all the way to the hut. You have a journey ahead of you. Leave the things here, and I will carry them.” The schemer wanted to hide them away somewhere so that the elder would not see them. So the men departed, and Gehazi returned, concealed the goods, composed himself as though he had done nothing, and went inside. As soon as he entered, the elder caught him out. “Tell me,” he said, “where have you been?” “Where?” Gehazi replied. “I did not go anywhere. I was here.” “You were here? Is this why we came into the wilderness—for vineyards, fields, and garments? May the commander’s leprosy come upon you.” And Gehazi came out white all over—not merely pale, but white with leprosy—because of the deceit he had committed. Go ahead and open the texts yourselves, even just out of curiosity.

You will find these things there, because ignorance of the Scriptures leads us badly astray. Christ tells us, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures,” because everything has already been said; we need only know how to connect it all correctly. From this, then, it is shown that leprosy was a type of sin. And I would also direct you to chapter thirty-eight of Sirach, where you will find the teaching about physicians, scientists, and medicines: “Honor the physician, for the Lord created him because he is needed.” The physician, it says, was made by God. “The Lord created medicines from the earth.” The physician is honored because he is needed, and medicines also come from God. If there is no medicine, that is another matter. Is there no medicine? Then raise your hands to Heaven. Will God not answer you? But if you can stop a headache with an aspirin, take the aspirin. It too belongs to God; it does not belong to Satan.

That too is from God. Why, then, do you once again rob God of His glory? Bless those people who spent their youth at the university and in research laboratories, so that they could discover this little remedy for me—though we have never once thanked either God or those people who wear themselves out trying to make our life of sin somewhat easier. In any case, as I was saying, although physicians dealt with every other illness, leprosy was a matter for the clergy. So please, if you wish, read those chapters and you will see that what I am telling you is true. The question, then, is not simply, “Do I repent?” but also, “To whom will I confess this repentance of mine?”

God placed the clergy between these two things, to regulate such matters, as I have told you. Yet, as I hear and know, many people hold the opposite opinion. They say that confession is unnecessary, because the Protestant world has abolished confession; it has no confession. They even urge us—absurdly—to speak directly to God or to an icon, although they themselves do not believe in icons. They are inconsistent, as we said last night. Above all, you should know that they rely on three verses. Do not accept their argument. The first is in the First Epistle of John, chapter 3, verse 6: “Whoever abides in Him does not sin.”

They say that whoever has been born again and abides with Christ does not sin. Consequently, since he does not sin, he has no need of repentance or confession. The second passage is from the same epistle, chapter 3, verse 9: “Whoever has been born of God does not commit sin; he cannot sin.” And the third is again from John, in chapter 5, verse 18 of his First Catholic Epistle: “He who has been born of God does not sin.” They therefore claim that, since they are born again and close to God, they have no need of confession. Yet that is not so. Although these things are indeed written, there are other passages that must also be considered, so that we are not led astray.

Let me mention a few that come to mind. Holy Scripture says: “Let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things.” “We all stumble in many things.” Holy Scripture says this in James 3:1–2. And in Matthew 6:12 we read: “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” So sins clearly exist, or these things would not have been said. Then there is that well-known passage from John: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, Christ is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” “My little children,” he says,

“I write these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” So sins do exist. We therefore ask: which passages are we to follow, the former or the latter? Someone may now say, “A Christian does not sin.” A Christian ought not to sin, but he does sin. There are two kinds of sin: sin committed by deliberate desire and sin committed through weakness. Some people want to sin and do so, while others, despite their struggle, are unable to avoid falling. One falls willingly; the other falls while fighting against sin. That is the difference.

Pay attention, then, to the precise meaning. A Christian, even when he is a genuine member of Christ, is not sinless—keep that in mind. He sins. Though he is a Christian, though he has been baptized, though he goes to confession and receives Holy Communion, he still sins. But he does not sin continually; he falls at intervals. That is why I told you that he does not sin by deliberate desire but through weakness. He struggles, yet he falls.

This is how the passages fit together. Those who sin continually and willingly remain without metanoia, without repentance; they are unrepentant and go on sinning. Holy Scripture itself indicates this distinction. It says, “If anyone sins,” using the verb in the aorist tense—notice this—to express a single act: if at some point he should sin. But it says, “does not sin,” in the present tense, to show that sin is not continuous. It says, “If anyone sins,” not, “one who keeps on sinning.” Consequently, some people sin willingly, while others sin against their will. What, then, happens to those who struggle but still fall? Temptation blows against them with great force, and in the end, despite all their resistance, they give way.

Some people surrender at the very first prompting of Satan because they enjoy that sin. Others drive it away and struggle against it for one month, two months, three months, six months, a year, five years, or ten years, and only in the end do they fall. The one is different from the other. When one sins, he blushes and is ashamed; his heart pounds as though it will burst. The other goes out to the café, discusses it, and tells his friends, “Then I did this, and then I did that.” The one is different from the other. There are no sinless people. They therefore interpret these passages wrongly. Now they move on to another argument. You will hear these things because you live in such an environment.

You cannot avoid hearing them, but perhaps you will know how to answer. They say, “Very well,” but they do not give up. “Tell me,” they ask, “when the Apostles preached repentance to the people, did they ever speak of confession?”

The Christian then looks at this supposed luminary and begins searching Holy Scripture for an answer. “Did the Apostles ever speak of confession? They did not preach confession; they preached repentance.” What is the key to this? What is the trap into which these people have fallen? I never want to believe that they speak against the salvation of their own souls. I would never go that far.

I do not allow myself to believe that, because it would be sheer madness. They have nothing to gain. It is madness to strike a knife with your fist. Surely there cannot be such Luciferian pride and such obstinacy. It is carelessness. Now, it is true that the Apostles did not preach confession.

They did not yet have Christians before them. What did they preach? They preached Baptism. Confession does not concern the unbaptized; it concerns those who have been baptized. On the first day, for example, the Apostles preached, and three thousand souls believed and were baptized. When their hearts were pierced with katanyxis, with compunction, they asked, “What shall we do, brethren?” What were they told? “Let each of you repent and be baptized in the name of Christ.” They were not baptized people who had failed to confess; they were unbaptized. Confession does not concern sins committed before Baptism, but sins committed after Baptism.

That is why confession is also called a second Baptism. Saint Gregory of Nyssa says, “Even a single falling tear is equal to the baptismal washing.” When even one tear of metanoia, of repentance, falls, he says, it is as though the person were baptized anew. This is why the Fathers call the Mystery of Repentance and Confession “grace after grace.” The first grace is Baptism, and the second grace is this renewal of Baptism, since Baptism itself is not repeated. “One faith, one Baptism,” says Paul. This is precisely why confession exists: it is a new baptism that cleanses the sins committed after Baptism. And this is precisely why we do not find the Apostles preaching confession there: they were not speaking to baptized Christians but to the unbaptized. I do not know whether you have grasped this point.

There are further arguments along the same lines. Those who receive the answer just given about their claim that confession does not exist do not stop there. They move on to another passage, and you should keep this in mind: 1 John 1:7. They speak about the blood of the Lord, which cleanses us from every sin. They also cite James: “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” What are we to understand in this case? It says, “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin.” We agree. But before the prodigal son could receive that blood, sit down at the mystical supper, partake of the fatted calf, and receive the blood of the Lamb, he had to pass through metanoia, repentance, through confession, and through the changing of his garment.

Only then did he enter, clothed in new and clean garments after his confession: “I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.” He entered with new shoes and a new pledge of betrothal, and so forth. We have no objection to saying that this medicine heals this disease. What we lack is the prescription telling us how to take it. Are we simply to turn up the bottle and drink? Are we to take it with food, before food, or after food? Are we to take three spoonfuls, five, or one? Yes, this medicine does this work. The blood of Christ does this work. But how is this medicine received?

Suppose I take an ointment and put it on a wound without first cleaning the wound. “But it hurts,” I say. Yes, but the wound must be cleaned. The filth must be removed; it must be scraped away, and the rotting flesh cut out, so that the ointment can be applied. Is that not so? It is the same here. It is true that “the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses.” But in order to receive this blood—which they themselves do not have—

They do not acknowledge that it is a Mystery, so how can they speak about blood? They do not acknowledge it as a Mystery. To them, the Holy Eucharist merely symbolizes; it is only a memorial, nothing more. They have inserted the words “nothing more,” which do not exist in the language of Holy Scripture. Consequently, their first argument is rejected. As for the second—“Confess your trespasses to one another, that you may be healed”—suppose someone tells me his sins, and then I tell him mine.

Have we been forgiven? Have those sins been blotted out or not? Read the beautiful teaching of Basil the Great. It is not enough simply to tell your sins; you must tell them to those appointed to receive them. When you become ill, you do not go to the lamplighter or the grocer; you go to the physician. You go to those appointed for the task, who can deal with it and who possess the authority and grace to set the matter right. My beloved, the words “confess to one another” do not refer to us laypeople. This is a matter for the clergy. We therefore go to the clergy. This verse concerns clergy who, although they are spiritual fathers, cannot forgive their own sins. Even a Patriarch cannot forgive his own sins; he must confess them to another. This passage is for them: they must confess to one another. One confesses his sins to priest A, and

priest A confesses his own sins to priest B, if they too want their sins to be cleansed. This passage is not addressed to us laypeople. We laypeople go to our spiritual father and confess our sins. I remember witnessing such a scene. I was on the Holy Mountain. Without knowing what was happening, I once opened the door of a room where the abbot of the skete was confessing to the bishop. A bishop was there at the time, and the abbot was making his confession. What did I see at the very moment I opened the door? The bishop removed the epitrachelion, the priestly stole, from his own neck. The abbot was still kneeling, and the bishop placed it around the abbot’s neck. In other words, the abbot had confessed and received the prayer

of absolution, together with whatever canon, or rule of prayer, may have been given—I do not know; that was their affair, and I heard nothing. Then the bishop, who had heard the abbot’s confession, rose, removed the epitrachelion from his own neck, placed it around the abbot’s neck, and sat down to confess all his own sins to the abbot, who was himself a spiritual father and confessor.

The Gospel says in one place—and I want you to know this—“But give as alms what is within, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” Give alms from what you have, it says, and whatever sins you have will be cleansed. This is written in Luke 11:41. What, then, does it mean? Does almsgiving cleanse sins? Then why do you tell us that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses sins? Why do you tell us, “Confess your trespasses to one another”? Listen, then. One passage speaks of the blood of the Lord, another says, “Confess your trespasses to one another,” and another speaks of almsgiving. It gives us three things. Which of the three is true? That is my question.

Is “Confess your trespasses to one another” true, Lord? Is it true, Lord, that we should give alms? What about the blood of Jesus Christ? Which of these is it? Tell us at last which one will take away our sins. For they bring forward the most astonishing arguments, so long as they can keep a person from going to Confession. They cannot bear the sight of a priest. Just as Satan trembles when he sees an Orthodox priest, and trembles when he sees an Orthodox priest’s stole, however sinful the priest may be—for it is the grace he fears, the priesthood he fears, as I told you earlier—so it is with those who have become entangled in these ideas. They do not want to hear anything. How, then, are we to act in this case? They have not seen...

...the authority established by the Holy Church: that the clergy receive grace and possess the authority to bind and to loose. “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” There is nothing apart from this. Yet here again they offer another sophistry. Keep this in mind, because you may hear it someday. Perhaps you will find yourself in a discussion with them, and this argument too will be put before you. Do you know what they say? Since the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, they ask, tell us: where did Thomas, who was absent that evening, receive the Holy Spirit? Thomas was absent when our Christ came on the evening of the Resurrection and stood in their midst. Thomas was absent. Indeed, he even doubted the Resurrection, and eight days later God came to him at that same hour and helped him not to remain unbelieving, but to believe. So they come forward again and say:

“Very well, then. Where did Thomas receive the Holy Spirit, since he was not there and did not receive grace? How, then, was he an Apostle of Christ? How did he ordain people and establish the Church, and so forth? Therefore, those whom Thomas ordained did not have the Holy Spirit through God’s breathing upon them.” That is another question they raise. But it is not so. We have another example in the Old Testament. Those of you who read it will find it in Numbers 11:24–26. There God told Moses to set apart seventy elders and ordain them for the needs of the congregation—seventy elders. He named them; their names were written on the list. Yet when the ordination took place, only sixty-eight were present. Two were absent. And nevertheless, there where they were...

...they began to prophesy right where they were. Thomas was one of the disciples. He was numbered among them; he was on the list, enrolled and chosen. He received grace from God. You cannot follow their arguments unless you know the devices they use, and many people are therefore forced to surrender to them. Thank you. However much they may wish to speak to us about these matters, they will not succeed. They will not succeed. And when you answer this argument as well, keep in mind what else they come up with. Do you know? “Very well,” they say, “in the early Church”—though these are people who do not even acknowledge the Church—“Confession was made publicly.”

They say, “Why do you make it private?” So now, in order to attack us again, they indirectly acknowledge both the Church and Confession. Until now they acknowledged neither, but when you corner them, they say, “In the early Church people confessed publicly. Why do you confess in private?” Thus they indirectly admit that both the Church and Confession existed. Those are two admissions. But if we no longer confess publicly, it is because the Church of Christ, which has the Holy Spirit, foresaw a better way. Public confession creates scandal. Your wife might stand up and say, “Last night I slept with such-and-such a man,” and you might take out a gun and kill her. Or you might say...

...that last night you were with such-and-such a woman, and then your wife might go out and kill her, or kill you. Or that woman’s friend might kill you. So instead of saving you through metanoia, through repentance, we would add murder as well. Besides, there are sins of which Paul says, “It is shameful even to speak.” Not merely shameful to commit, but shameful even to speak of. And many people, you know, learn sins from others that they had never known before; by hearing about them, they learn them. Let me tell you of something terrible that can happen when a confessor is inexperienced. During Confession, a person can learn of a sin and then fall into it. The confessor may ask you about some outrageous thing that had never entered your mind. Of course, you will not have done it. But afterward Satan begins to work on that very point, tempting you to commit that sin.

Therefore, our Church, which possesses the Spirit of God, foresaw this and made Confession private, face to face—one person with one person. Some married couples try to be bold and go together, two people before one confessor. They confess together. We do have such cases, though they are few. The clergy do not reject this; they accept it as well, at any rate. So keep in mind that our Holy Church does not err, and do not be scandalized. Now, what many people question—especially those people, but also some among us—is a seemingly reasonable logismos, an intrusive thought. It is whether a sinful man, a priest or bishop, for example, is capable and possesses the power and the grace to perform...

...a Mystery, and especially the Mystery of Confession. Because they think that this priest is sinful—because they heard something, learned something, or noticed something, whether true or false—many people do not come to Confession. Yet they do come forward and receive Holy Communion without having confessed. That is the second point to note here. So this sinful priest is supposedly not fit to deal with your sins and celebrate the Mystery of Confession, yet he is fit to celebrate the Holy Eucharist, the Mystery of Mysteries, so that you may receive Holy Communion without Confession? For if he is incapable of celebrating—if grace has departed and been driven away because of his corrupt life—so that he cannot celebrate the Mystery through which his sins and mine are taken away, then it would follow...

...that he also has no grace to celebrate the Mystery of Mysteries, through which we receive Holy Communion without having confessed. I think it is clear that this is mistaken. The determining factor is something else; the cause is something else. My dear ones, stand in reverence before the clergy, because the clergy belong to God. I am not speaking about the individual persons among the clergy. I am speaking about the institution, the priesthood, the clergy. If people knew certain events from the Tradition of our Church, they would not stay away from the Church or speak as they do. I do not know when you arrive for church, because many people go only at the end, as though they were clocking in for work. Do you understand? They have no desire to get up and go to church. They imagine that church begins after the Holy Gifts, after the Creed, after the Lord’s Prayer, after the Doxology, or after the Apostle. The Divine Liturgy begins with “Blessed is the Kingdom.”

If possible, you should arrive before the priest. Then you will truly be among those attending the service. Otherwise, you will not—unless, of course, you have a valid reason. If you have a valid reason—illness, a child, a long distance, the demands of your work, and so forth—God orders things providentially, and grace visits you.

But when you have no reason at all, and you are late because you came home at three in the morning from the coffeehouse, from someone’s embrace, or from who knows where, God does not excuse such things. At any rate, those of you who regularly go to church in the morning, have you noticed what the priest does before entering the sanctuary, vesting, and taking his place as a minister of the Most High? He comes out and makes his confession.

This is what is called “taking the kairos,” the appointed time of preparation. He comes out and prays before Christ, before the Most Holy Theotokos, before the Honorable Forerunner, before the Saint of the day, and before the patron Saint of the church. He prays to God: “Open to me the gates of compassion.” I am not righteous; open to me the gate of Your compassion. And after he has made his confession and completed the other prayers, he turns to the people, bows before them in metanoia, and asks their forgiveness for anything he may have done against them. Then he enters the sanctuary, removes his black garments, and puts on white vestments. Woe to the person who speaks against him at that moment. At that moment, whether we understand it or not, that man is an angel. I would like to tell you a story that is even more edifying on this subject. It concerns one of the Holy Unmercenaries and that great Saint, Basil the Great. I do not know whether you are familiar with it. Basil the Great was a simple and approachable man.

He traveled throughout his diocese, so to speak. There was not a village that he did not find an opportunity to visit, even for Vespers. Many times the bishop himself would arrive and ring the bell before Father Michael or Father George could get there to ring it for Vespers. One evening, we are told, he went to a village. He knew the people and the circumstances there. He spoke to Father Michael and said, “I do not see Uncle George. How is he? Is he still here, or has he gone away?” He was a familiar elderly man, with his flat cap and walking stick, who never missed either Vespers or Matins. “He is well, Your Grace.” “But I do not see him here this evening.”

He replied, “He has not come to church for some time.” “Why does he not come?” the bishop asked. “It seems he is upset with us; I do not know.” “And you did not take an interest in finding out what is troubling the man?” “Well,” he said, “I did try a little, but without much faith.” Then the bishop said to a boy, “You there, young man, go to Uncle George’s house and tell him that the bishop is at the church and wants him to come.” The boy left and went there. Uncle George came with his flat cap, his simple clothes, and his little walking stick. He bowed in metanoia before the bishop. “Uncle George, forgive me for troubling you. I knew that you were always in church, and Father Michael told me you were not here this evening and that you have not come for some time.” “Yes, Your Grace, it has been some time since I came.” “Are you well? Why have you stayed away?” “I am well,” he said, “but...” What did he mean by “but”? The bishop now understood that something was troubling him. “Very well,” he said, “we will speak later...”},{

...after Vespers.” When Vespers ended, he said, “Father Michael, you go home. I will speak for a while with Uncle George, and then we will come.” The bishop took out his priestly stole, put it on, and said to him, “Confess to me under the stole.” In other words, whatever is said in Confession is buried there. “Why do you not come to church?” He understood that Uncle George must have been hurt or embittered by something involving Father Michael. And so...

...he stopped Uncle George, who now had to tell the truth.

“Your Eminence, it is true,” he said, “that I do not come to church. But you know about the murder that took place here in the village three months ago?” “I know.” “And you know that the murderer has still not been found?” “I know that as well.” “Do you know who killed the man?” “That I do not know.”

“Father Michael killed him.” “Father Michael?” “Yes, Father Michael killed him.” “How did he kill him, and why? And how is it that the village does not know Father Michael killed him?” “Because I did not tell anyone.” “You know about it?” “Of course. I was there.” “Then tell me how the murder happened.” “Well,” he said, “we had celebrated Vespers here that evening. As we were going out through the door, Father Michael and the chanter began arguing over nothing. Father Michael had a small liturgical knife, the kind used for the Prothesis. I do not know what came over him,” he said, “but he struck him like this, right in the heart, and the man fell to the ground. Tell me, Your Grace, how can I come to church when I know that this hand is stained with blood? How can I receive antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy, from the hand of this man? I have said nothing; I did not report him. May God have mercy on him.”

“How can I come, knowing this sin?” What could the bishop tell him now—that he could? “Then you are right, Uncle George,” he said, “and now I understand why you have not... How could you...? But I ask you this: since I will still be here tomorrow and will celebrate the Divine Liturgy, come to church tomorrow.” “I will come, Your Grace, since you will be there.” Uncle George had always made a habit of arriving at church before the priest. He would wait outside until the church caretaker came. He would ring the bell, enter first, and then Father Michael would arrive. And so, after three months away, the next morning he put on his flat cap, took his little walking stick, and came to church. He rang the bell, went inside, venerated an icon, and then went to the right chanter’s stand. He always stood upright on the left side of that right-hand stand.

He had been standing there only a short while—the Church was empty, of course—when he heard someone approaching. He simply turned around to see who was coming, and saw that it was Father Michalis. But the moment he saw him, he was terrified. Father Michalis was walking along unconcerned and proud, carrying on his shoulder the dead man—the corpse, the remains of the man he had killed. Just as shepherds carry a lamb across their shoulders, like our crucified Christ, so he carried the remains of the man he had killed, without realizing that the murdered man was on his back. He went before the icon of Christ, made a prostration and kissed it; then he went to the Most Holy Theotokos, did the same, and entered the sanctuary. Barba-Giorgis stood there terrified. “What is this that I am seeing?” The Saint...

had evidently prayed to the Lord to open his eyes, so that he might see what truly happens in the services when a priest or bishop is sinful, and how God orders these things so that the faithful may still receive grace, while the clergy themselves will have to give an account if they do not afterward repent. He stood there utterly motionless, watching to see what would happen. Then the bishop arrived, followed by his deacon and the others, and they began preparing. A bishop always says the entrance prayers before the three-part icon of Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the saints, while the others go outside. So they went out and venerated the icons, as I told you earlier. They said the entrance prayers, praying before Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Honorable Forerunner, the saint of the church, and the others, and then they entered the sanctuary.

From his place at the chanter’s stand, Barba-Giorgis glanced sideways to see what was happening inside the sanctuary. The bishop was standing on one side and the others on the other. He saw Father Michalis begin to remove his black clothing so that he could put on the priestly vestments for the Divine Liturgy. As he watched, he suddenly saw two tall, handsome, fair-haired men. One went to one side and the other to the other side. They took hold of the corpse—the remains that had been hanging across Father Michalis’s back and shoulder—lifted it from him, and stood at the far side of the Holy Altar, behind it, holding it there. Father Michalis was aware of nothing. He took off his black clothing and put on his white vestments, becoming like an angel, as did the deacon and the bishop. Barba-Giorgis now began to understand what this was about—the great lesson being revealed in the Church.

And so he remained rooted to the spot throughout the entire Divine Liturgy. He heard the sermon of Saint Basil the Great and witnessed Holy Communion. He waited to see what would happen in the end. After they had given Holy Communion to the people, consumed what remained in the chalice, distributed the antidoron, and begun removing their vestments, Father Michalis’s turn came as well. He took off the white, consecrated vestments of the Church, folded them, and laid them carefully in their place. Then he put his black clothing back on. As soon as he had done so, those two tall, fair-haired, handsome men returned and once again placed upon him the remains of the man he had murdered. They laid the corpse across his back.

Father Michalis then went out ahead of everyone, with the corpse on his back, and set off for home. Barba-Giorgis remained there, frozen. Saint Basil now knew what he had seen and what had taken place. At the end, he called him over and asked him gently, “Barba-Giorgis, will you come to Church from now on?” He replied, “My bishop, after what I have seen, I am overwhelmed. I ask forgiveness and confess my sin, because I did not understand how things in the Church truly are. I thought that I was receiving the antidoron from a bloodstained hand. I did not know that I was receiving the antidoron from the hand of an angel. I will come, my bishop.” This is only one of the many accounts I could tell you. Perhaps God will grant us another talk on this subject, because we have not exhausted it. That is all for this evening.

“What you are going to say, you will not say to me. Confess it to him. Then go and tell me what he did. Do not hide it from me. Confess to him, but afterward you will tell me.” Are these things not found in the Scriptures? And yet they make such a show of being students of the Scriptures and claim to believe only what the Word of God says—as though these things were spoken by the bushes and not by the Word of God! Forgive me for the manner and tone in which I speak. But, my beloved, these are matters in which, if we lose our way, we are lost. If we do not grasp this matter here and put it into action, we are lost. Time, however, does not permit me to continue, and I see that the subject must be taken up again. So, if God grants us life, I will add a little more tomorrow evening. I trust, by the grace of God...

He is watching over us at this very moment, for we are not alone here. Our Lord Jesus Christ is invisibly present, and He opens our hearts according to the measure of our receptiveness. Do you remember what Paul said, what is written in the Acts of the Apostles? When he was in Philippi speaking to the people there, Christ—the Lord, it says—opened Lydia’s heart.

He did not open the hearts of the others, because their minds were occupied with fashion; they were there merely for appearances and fashion. But Lydia had opened her ear—her spiritual ear—and when she opened her ear, Christ opened her heart as well. She was the first to believe. She heard the word, grasped it, received it, and kept it within her, just as the womb receives and preserves the seed of life. She nourished it and brought it to maturity, and her name is written in the Scriptures. Thank you very much.

Ήθελα στο σημείο αυτό να υπενθυμίσω κάτι που μπορεί να μας βοηθήσει στο θέμα μας. Τι δουλειά έχει ο κλήρος, τι δουλειά έχει ο άνθρωπος στο μέσον, πόσο είναι μια υπόθεση μεταξύ ανθρώπου και Θεού; Και εν τούτοις, έτσι το έχει κανονίσει. Δεν είναι δικό μας το θέμα. Η υπόδειξη δεν είναι ανθρωπίνη. Η υπόδειξη είναι θεία. Θα ήθελα να σας διευκολύνω, εάν δεν ξέρετε. Ενθυμείσθε κάποτε που ο Χριστός μας εθεράπευσε δέκα λεπρούς;

να παρακαθίσει στο μυστικό δείπνο, να λάβει μέρος στο μόσχο το σιτευτό, για να πάρει το αίμα του αρνίου, πέρασε από τη μετάνοια, από την εξομολόγηση, από την αλλαγή του κουστουμιού του, του ρούχου του. Με καινούργια πλέον ενδυμασία, με καθαρή ενδυμασία, κατόπιν της εξομολογήσεώς του, «ήμαρτον εις τον ουρανόν και ενώπιόν σου, ουκέτι ειμί άξιος κληθήναι υιός σου», με καινούργια παπούτσια, με καινούργιο αρραβώνα κλπ., εισέρχεται. Δεν έχουμε καμιά αντίρρηση ότι αυτό το φάρμακο είναι για την ασθένεια αυτή. Τη συνταγή δεν έχουμε, πώς θα το πάρουμε το φάρμακο αυτό. Θα γυρίσουμε το μπουκάλι να το πάρουμε; Θα το πάρουμε μες στο φαγητό, προ του φαγητού, μετά το φαγητό; Θα το πάρουμε τρεις κουταλιές, πέντε κουταλιές, μια κουταλιά; Ναι, αυτό το φάρμακο κάνει αυτή τη δουλειά. Το αίμα του Χριστού κάνει αυτή τη δουλειά. Πώς το παίρνουν αυτό το φάρμακο;
