Summary

Humanity’s true earthly purpose is to return to Paradise, and repentance is the indispensable path after every fall into sin. Neither money, offerings, charitable works, nor private acknowledgment alone replaces confession, through which the spiritual father applies healing medicine to the soul. Baptism buries the old fallen person and raises a new one in Christ, while repentance restores the baptismal garment when later sins stain it.

This evening I wanted to speak about something that concerns every person who comes into the world, and especially every Christian.

I would like to put a question to myself and to those who are listening to me, or who may listen to me in the future: How does a person return to Paradise?

At first sight, the question seems difficult. Yet it ought to be easy for every Christian. If we knew the funeral service, we would know how to answer it. But although we should all know this, we do not. So, if you ask the departed person, he answers through the chanter: “I too have found the way through repentance,” because this is always a person’s prayer and desire, as the departed says in the service:

“Grant me my homeland; make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” A person’s purpose on earth is to return to Paradise. We have no other purpose here on earth. The earth and the works within it will one day pass away, and “we await new heavens and a new earth”—new, not empty heavens and an empty earth—“we await new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” Yet people do not use this key to Paradise, which is called repentance. Although they want and aspire to return to Paradise, they look for other ways and other means of returning there. Please, do not overlook this. If you wish, write it as the second item in your diptychs

and always put it into action. For a person falls many times each day, in word, in deed, and in thought. There is no other way: repentance is the way. A fall requires a Resurrection. To fall is human; to persist in the fall is demonic. So I do not understand the opposition to this loving action of Christ, for it truly is an act of His love for mankind. The Mystery of repentance is called by the Holy Fathers—and specifically by Saint Isaac the Syrian—“a mystery of God’s love for mankind.” If this Mystery did not exist, no one would be saved. Not a single person—not even Abraham—would have been saved

if the Mystery of repentance did not exist. Our Church has numbered this Mystery among the seven so-called Mysteries. But, as you know, this Mystery is not repentance alone; it is also confession. Unfortunately, there is a harmful tendency to divide this Mystery in two. And so today we have people who have repented but have never confessed, and others who confess but have never repented—people who have made confession but remain unrepentant. In every place, few are truly both repentant and confessed. The matter begins in Paradise. Christ asked nothing else of mankind.

People are generous when it comes to giving money. They readily bring clothing and local goods, oil and incense; they give gold, bricks, iron, and so forth. They try to pay for their sins with such works. But Christ does not accept this. When He sent His Forerunner, this was the message proclaimed to us. He did not preach works as the means of salvation; he preached repentance. What did he say to the people? “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” When Christ Himself came and began His public ministry, what did He say, as we read in Mark? “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” And He added a few more words: “And believe in the Gospel.” In other words, believe in Me. The Gospel is not the paper on which it is written. The Gospel is the One about whom that paper speaks. He is Christ. He is the Gospel, the good tidings that the Son of God became the Son of the Virgin, so that

the son of man might once again become a son of God. God became man so that we might once again become gods by grace. This is the reason: that we might return to our beloved homeland, to the place from which we departed and which we lost along the paths of sin. A person must always keep this matter before him and pay close attention to what God asks of him. God does not ask us to repay Him for our faults. Sin means missing the mark—I do not know how you interpret it. A person misses the mark; he fails to reach the goal and does not go where he ought to go. This is precisely what happened to the first man. God asked this one thing of him and even made it easy for him to repent, yet he did not repent. Instead, they simply shifted the blame: Eve blamed the serpent, Adam blamed Eve, and both of them blamed God. They did not repent, and this became the cause of their expulsion. Therefore, that which

caused mankind’s expulsion from Paradise was sin together with refusal to repent. For this reason, God asks us today either to remain without sin or, if sin occurs, to repent. Adam and Eve sinned and did not repent. Likewise, those who remain outside today will not remain outside because they stole, dishonored others, or committed this sin or that. They will remain outside because they did not repent. Since Adam’s fall had two causes—sin and refusal to repent—our return, by the corresponding remedy, must involve either sinlessness or repentance. For there is no person “who shall live and not sin.” No one has lived in this world without sinning, whether in word, in deed, or in thought. This is precisely why repentance is absolutely necessary. Concerning this,

when our Christ returned from the tomb in His Resurrection, He drew attention first of all to this Mystery. These things seem strange, these actions seem strange, to the reasoning of a person who lives far from dogma, far from Tradition, and far from the central message of Holy Scripture.

A person ought to stand in awe and say: “But, my Christ, You went down into Hades. Had You nothing else to tell us? What is this that You are saying? What is this that You are establishing?” And Christ answers: “This is why I went down into Hades. I went there because of your sins. Because of your sins they still nail Me to the Cross. And I went down into Hades to bring you a medicine.” Have you ever read in John the account of our Christ’s appearance there in little Galilee, when Thomas was absent?

As soon as they were gathered together for the first time, He said to them twice, “Peace be with you.” Then He continued: “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” What did the Father send Him with? With the authority to bind and to loose.

“So that you may know that the Son of God—the Son of Man—has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the paralytic who had been lowered through the roof, “Take up your bed and walk.” Therefore, I possess this authority. For they were scandalized when He said to the man, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” They said among themselves, “Who is this who forgives sins? This is an attribute of God alone.”

In their eyes and in their minds, He was merely the son of Mary and Joseph. “So that you may know, then, that the Son of Man has this authority,” He said, “Son, your sins are forgiven you,” and by what they could see He proved the truth of what they could not see. When Christ was about to depart, He did not take this authority away with Him. He said, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. Receive the Holy Spirit,” and He breathed upon their faces. In other words, He brought about a Pentecost before Pentecost. Do we understand what this means? He gave them the Holy Spirit before Pentecost, fifty days earlier, on the evening of the Resurrection. He gave them the Holy Spirit, the special grace to bind and loose sins. “Receive the Holy Spirit.” For what purpose? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

He commanded them to do this. Yet today this ministry of binding and loosing—which belongs by right to the clergy alone—is left unused by many, and at the same time it is slandered, to our own harm. Please pay attention to this. Preaching leaves a person free. The word is preached, and whoever wishes accepts it, while whoever does not wish rejects it. Christ never compels anyone. He descended into Hades and preached there, but He forced no one. Acceptance is free. We may accept it or reject it: “I hear You, Lord, but I do not accept it. Go in peace. When we meet again above, then You will see, and I will see, exactly how things stand.” This action of our Christ,

this love of our Christ, remains inactive today. Do you realize that? When I arrived here, I heard a talk on the radio urging people not to confess to a clergyman, not to confess to another human being. To whom, then, should they confess? To God. And what answer will they receive from God, when this very God, having come to earth, left behind the authority to bind and to loose? There are two sets of keys, beloved: one to Paradise and one to Hell. Christ left the keys of Paradise on earth. “Peter, take the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven; whatever you bind shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed.” But He took the keys of Hell with Him. Read the first chapter of the Apocalypse and you will find that He possesses “the keys of Hades and of death.” And in icons you see Peter, as you may have noticed on many occasions,

going to open Paradise with the keys. Those keys are repentance and confession. There is no other key. The wondrous key, so to speak, is repentance. When a person says to Christ, “I repent,” judgment ceases entirely at His hands. Repentance disarms Him; God’s justice does not act against that person. There is no other way. We may say, “I will pay You; I will make satisfaction to You.” But there is no satisfaction and no payment. It is a free gift. Wherever repentance is found, it moves Heaven, brings everything to a halt, and God does not even remember what was done. What did the king of Nineveh do? What did he proclaim when he heard the message, “In three days Nineveh shall be destroyed”? What did he proclaim? He proclaimed repentance, a turning back to God. “Who knows,” he said, “perhaps God will relent.” And God did relent.

Such is the power of human repentance. As the popular saying—the theology of our grandmothers—puts it: “A bowed head is not cut off.” This is true; it is practical theology. And what does David say? “A broken and humbled heart God will not despise.” Does he not say this? Indeed he does, and with great emphasis. But what do we do about our sins? We make vows; we give money for icons and churches to be made; we give alms; we tell our troubles to all the winds; we tell Saint George; we tell the icon; and we tell God. And what does God answer? When someone falls ill, does he take a photograph of the doctor and speak to it? Or does he go to the doctor, undress for the examination, seek him out, and press him for help, crying, “Doctor, please,” and so forth?

Then the doctor writes him a prescription. If he does not obtain the medicine prescribed by the doctor, he will reach the cemetery an hour sooner. In the same way, the spiritual physician writes a prescription. He will tell you, “Be careful about this; guard yourself against that; do this and do the other,” and so forth. A bodily physician may have every good intention and all the wisdom in the world, yet lack the medicine needed to cure you. But with Christ, you know that you will certainly be healed. With the bodily physician, you know there is a possibility that you may not recover; he may operate on you and empty your wallet so thoroughly that you throw it away afterward—and still you go to him. But here, where you will not pay a single penny and where you know that these cancers of the soul will be healed completely, a person refuses to go. I do not know; I want to believe that you are making at least some small effort.

Whether this happens knowingly or through ignorance, through habit or for some other reason, I do not know. Pay attention to this matter: there is no other way. If you want to see what Christ asks of us, open Christ’s correspondence, written through His secretary John, with the seven bishops of the Churches of the East. Open the first, second, and third chapters of the Apocalypse, where you will find Christ’s correspondence with the bishops of the seven Churches. You will see that the refrain addressed to all of them is this: “Repent and return to your former place. Repent, repent, repent.” He says nothing else. He does not say, “Pay Me.” He does not say, “Make satisfaction to Me.” He says none of these things. What He does say is, “Repent.”

I know that almost all of us ought to read this correspondence. I have had the opportunity to study it, make notes, preserve them, and sometimes write on these subjects, if you will permit me. For example, do you know what He says to the bishop of Ephesus? After writing many things and urging him to take heed, He finally says: “Remember therefore from where you have fallen”—remember where you once stood and from where you fell—“repent, and do the first works,” works worthy of repentance. “Otherwise,” if you do not do this, if you do not repent, “I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.” We find this in the second chapter of the Apocalypse.

He writes the same thing to the bishop of Pergamum, the bishop of Thyatira, the bishop of Sardis, and the bishop of Laodicea. Open this correspondence, from the second chapter through the third, and read it, so that you may see the power of repentance.

Saint Nilus, one of the Fathers of nepsis, or watchfulness, speaks of those who use this medicine called repentance, which sets everything right: “No one who has ever used the potent medicine of repentance has been lost.” Certainly, no one who used this powerful medicine was ever lost. No one, my beloved, ever regretted having repented. Everyone regretted not having repented. Everyone did. No one was ever heard crying out at the hour of death, “I regret that I repented.” On the contrary, even the foremost patriarchs of unbelief cried out that they regretted not having repented.

They did not accept the teaching of Christ, and they did not allow Him into their lives. That is how they all departed from this world. The divine John Chrysostom says: “Repentance procures the Kingdom of Heaven, opens the way into Paradise, and grants the enjoyment of eternal delight.” A Father of the early Church named Didymus says: “Repentance for sins makes the nous—the spiritual intellect—of the repentant person pure”; in other words, it restores that person to order. Many people like the idea of repentance and recognize that it is beneficial, but they do not make use of it. Then comes the one who knows how to steal the present while promising the future, who steals today and promises tomorrow: the devil. He postpones the date and says to the person:

“There is still time.” I do not know whether you have heard the proceedings of a council of devils. Listen to one passage from them. It is said that Beelzebub the Great once convened a council so that the devils could exchange opinions about how to win more Christians over to their side. Many of them offered their wisdom there.

They said, “We shall make people kill one another; we shall make them lose their fervor; we shall lead them astray; we shall tell them, ‘There is nothing beyond this life, there is no God, Paradise is here,’” and so on and so forth. Everyone explained his position fully before Beelzebub; they all gave their opinion. But in a corner, far off to one side, sat one little devil. “You there, little one,” Beelzebub said to him, “you have said nothing.”

“The others have already said what I had in mind.” “Then say something of your own. What do you think?” “I disagree,” he replied, “with all of you and with all our colleagues here. Whatever we may tell people, they have within themselves some awareness that another life exists and that God exists. People possess some sense of all these things, more or less. We shall not achieve very much if we do what our colleagues have proposed.” “Then what do you propose?” “We shall tell them that everything exists: that there is life beyond the grave, that the nous—the spiritual intellect—exists, that Christ exists, that God exists, that the Most Holy Theotokos exists. Everything exists. But we shall tell them, ‘You still have time.’” And you yourselves know that this is true. Most of the people who are in Hell, my beloved, or who will go there, are people whom death catches sleeping. That is what happens.

Who said that the Second Coming will be tomorrow? At this very moment, in a fraction of a second, He may say to me, “I want you. Rise and come up.” For all these earthly distinctions are small things. Whoever a person may have been in this world—Alexander the Great, the Kaiser, Stalin, Hitler, Napoleon, or anyone else—all are finally reduced to the same small measure. All these things I shall speak about during these evenings concern everyone.

Repentance, even considered only from the meaning of the word itself, would require ten complete talks to explain it from every side. But what are we? Merely laborers. Since I am only passing through here, I cast a net and accept whatever it may gather. I hope in God. I see that your intention is good, and I trust in God’s goodness. Yet we keep drifting farther down, farther outward, farther away.

Will you postpone this until tomorrow, as we so often say? What more important task do we have? Is the care of the soul not our task? It is our first and greatest task. I sometimes say in Athens, in my own foolish way: let me be a shoeshiner in Omonia Square, let me be nothing, and let me die like a dog somewhere. The serious matter is my immortal soul. Whether I die resting on cotton and surrounded by gold, or die upon a dung heap like Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ or Saint John the Russian, makes no difference. What matters is the state in which the camera lens of death captures me. Wherever that lens of death finds a person, there he will remain in eternity. Permit me to say this: people today are enlightened and highly accomplished; they have even landed on the moon.

Yet they have not landed within themselves. We have landed on the moon—a great achievement—but we have not come down to earth within our own souls. Why did we come, where have we come, and where are we going? This is a very serious matter. That is why I say this, and why Paul and our ancient teachers say the same. But listen also to Saint Basil the Great: “Weep before the time comes, so that you may not weep there.” Repent now, while repentance is permitted to you, he says, and do not wait until then to repent of your sins, because repentance at that time will accomplish nothing. The rich man repented then, but did it avail him? It availed him nothing.

“There is no time for repentance then. Let us do good while we are still able.” If we lose money, we may acquire it again. Many people have lost money in some business venture and later earned it back. They struggled, lost it again, and struggled once more; wealth can be acquired again. “We can therefore recover it,” he says. “But if we lose time, we cannot obtain any more.” If you lose time, you can never acquire it again. And Christ desires the salvation of the human person. Do you know how passionately He longs for it? Listen: “No lover, madly in love with his beloved, longs for her as intensely as God longs for the soul that repents.”

Christ says this concerning the repentant soul.

When two young people in love meet, especially after they have not seen each other for a long time, how they seize one another and embrace! Have you ever seen such an embrace? This is what we see in the Prodigal Son: his father seized him, “fell upon his neck, and kissed him fervently.” There we have the true image of how Christ longs for, desires, and awaits every soul. For every soul is the bride of Christ, and Christ is the Bridegroom of every soul. We sing, “Behold, the Bridegroom comes in the middle of the night.” Who is the Bridegroom whose coming we proclaim in the services of Holy Week? It is Christ. And who is the bride? The soul.

Who is the Bridegroom? Christ. As it is written, “The Master’s boundless love for mankind turns away none who run to Him, but makes them beautiful.” Clement of Alexandria, another Father of the early centuries, says: “It is good not to sin, but it is also good for those who sin to repent.” Yes, it is good. If you have sinned, if you have fallen—you are human; you have eyes, hands, bodily needs and flesh, and Satan tempts you—then you have fallen. Is it not therefore good for you to repent after sinning? Will you not get up? Will you not get up? Will you not get up? When your animal falls on the road, you try to raise it, and others help you lift it. When your donkey falls, then...

The donkey gets up. But when the donkey-driver falls, he does not get up; he even starts blaspheming. Do you understand the foolish things we do? We see someone whose animal has fallen on the road, and we go to help him raise it. We hear the man blaspheming, yet we lift up his animal, his donkey, and say nothing to him, though he blasphemes the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, and so forth. Such is our reasoning. Therefore, “It is good not to sin, but it is also good for those who sin to repent; just as it is best always to be healthy, so it is good to recover after sickness.” It is good, he says, for a person not to become ill. But if he does become ill, what then? Is it good for him simply to die? No, it is good for him to recover. The same is true of the human soul. Unfortunately, we do not give these things the attention they deserve, but we shall continue.

Baptism does not merely signify rebirth, as the Protestant world says. It is rebirth. A dead person must be buried, and “we are buried in the likeness of the death” of Jesus. Have you studied the texts the Church has gathered to speak about this? The baptismal font and Baptism mean burial and resurrection. The person is buried—not in exactly the same manner, but in a likeness, “in the likeness of His death,” because if he were buried in the same manner, in the earth, he would die. He is immersed in the water three times, just as Christ spent three days in the tomb. He enacts the burial of Christ, rises from the water, and is now a new person, because before this he bore a dark stain upon his back, upon his soul. David says it, and Holy Scripture says it: “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins my mother bore me.”

Even the seed of Abraham remains sinful and needs to be grafted, my beloved. Even the child born to the holiest person needs burial. It is sinful; it comes into the world alive yet dead, like a little dragon, and it must be buried and raised again. Baptism is burial and resurrection. Does nature itself not teach us this? I do not know whether you pay attention to such things. If we take an orange seed and cast it into the ground, what will it produce? You know that it will produce a bitter-orange tree and will need to be grafted. If you sow the pit of a good olive, what will it produce? A wild olive tree, which also needs grafting. The same is true of your offspring and mine.

Thus a person receives Baptism freely in infancy, as is the Orthodox practice in the Church, because no one knows when the child may die. Even if the child has committed no personal sins, ancestral sin is present within and must be buried. A person must understand this. At Baptism, after renouncing Satan and uniting himself to Christ, he receives the white garment. Unfortunately, when he grows older, when his nous—the spiritual intellect—begins to awaken and he becomes somewhat full of himself, when he imagines that we human beings are everything, when egotism emerges, the flesh asserts itself, and worldly theories begin to influence him—at twelve, thirteen, fifteen, or nineteen years of age—he turns and says to Christ, “I renounce You, Christ.” “Why, My daughter? Where are you going? You desire virginity, but I shall go with the devil, who does not desire virginity. I renounce You, Christ, because You desire fasting. I shall go to the devil, who does not.”

“You desire this and that; You desire purity and integrity. I shall go with the other one.” “So you renounce Me, after confessing Me through the person of your godparent? Very well. And now you are going to the other one and uniting yourself to him. Stop, please. Take off the garment I gave you at Baptism. Take off this grace I gave you at Baptism, this white garment.”

“I have a special place where it will be kept. And if you ever repent and return...” You are left outside, naked and exposed. You may have five hundred suits in your wardrobe, but you do not have the garment of the soul, because you rejected what you received at Baptism. You rejected Christ. In the eyes of Christ, you are naked—naked and exposed.

That is the state of man. If you wish, read carefully...

...the letter of our Christ to the angel of the Church in Laodicea. “You are naked,” He tells him, “and wretched.” That is what He said. And He tells him to obtain salve from Him and put it on his eyes, so that he may see what he truly is, though he imagines himself to be something. That is how it is. And when a person returns, Christ gives him once again the first robe. Suppose I work in a shop, and the shop gives me a coat, a uniform, some garment bearing an emblem that shows I belong to that business. Let us say it is the Dragonas store or the Lambropoulos store—those are the names I know from Athens. If I leave that business after falling out with the supervisor, the manager, or the owner, must I not leave my uniform behind in its wardrobe? Could I take it and wear it outside? I could even be sent to prison for that; I cannot do it.

If I am in the military and, for one reason or another, I am expelled from its ranks, can I continue wearing the uniform? There will be consequences. The same applies to the clergy: if I am a clergyman and the Church deposes me and removes me from the clerical state, yet I put on the vestments and parade around in them, that is an unlawful impersonation and carries consequences. Is that not so? This is exactly how matters stand with Christ. This is the first robe. When we depart into prodigal living and shape our lives according to the world, our own ideas, the flesh, our ego, our self-interest, and Satan, the grace of the Holy Spirit strips that robe from us. And whenever we return, He gives us the first robe again. That is what it means. When the Prodigal Son—each of us sometimes stands in his place—was brought to the fatted calf, he was not admitted wearing the garment in which...

...he had lived in that filthy hut among the pigs. The father took it off him, clothed him in a new robe, and only then did he enter. I say this to our people in America who approach Holy Communion without Holy Confession. They sit down at the feast of the fatted calf still wearing the clothes of that filthy hut—simply because they fasted on Great Wednesday, because they attended Holy Unction and heard the prayers, and for a thousand other reasons; or because, as I said earlier, they confessed in their own way to God, to Christ, to His icon, to the Most Holy Theotokos, or to Saint George. No. If you are to enter where the fatted calf is and there is to be joy in Heaven...

...if great joy is to begin in Heaven, you must do this as Christ has commanded. If people were willing to pay attention to these things, they would understand them. But pride is involved, and so they stop at certain conclusions based on their own reasoning—conclusions that contain death from the outset, at least spiritual death. Yet the mercy of God waits for them. Therefore, it is not enough for a person simply to repent; he must also declare his repentance, and he must declare it to the person appointed for this purpose—not wherever he chooses and not in whatever way he chooses, but to the proper person. This has existed since the Old Testament. Why do I stress it? Because the Protestant world has no priesthood, no Mystery of Holy Orders. It accepts only two Mysteries, and does not truly acknowledge even those as Mysteries. No, Protestants do not even acknowledge Holy Communion as the Body and Blood of Christ.

They regard it merely as a remembrance, although the word “merely” is nowhere in the text. Remembrance means that I do what was done; I call it to remembrance by doing it as it was done. Body and Blood: “Take My flesh and My blood.” “Is” means is, not signifies. “This is My Body; this is My Blood.” These are Greek words, written in Greek letters, and no one can remove them from the text. These truths, then, are essential, and in some way I want to impress them deeply upon you, into your very souls. As far as you are able, make use of them and help others understand them. Protestants also retain Baptism, but teach that it signifies regeneration rather than that it truly is regeneration. It is “the washing of regeneration”: man is buried and rises again, as Paul says and as Christ says.

This is what the tradition of our Holy Church teaches through so many Saints. They do not possess Holy Orders either, although they all presume to act as priests. They present themselves as priests, but they do not have Holy Orders. For that reason, they reject our teaching and say, “There is no need for a priest; confess directly to God.” Yet I tell you that even in the Old Testament there is testimony that confession is indeed addressed to God, but is made in the presence of another person. The classic example is that of David and Nathan.

David sinned. You may remember David’s fall from school. He became an adulterer and a premeditated murderer. He was a great man, not an insignificant man like me. He was a king and a prophet, a ruler and a prophet—a person of great stature. Yet he suffered a terrible fall. And God sent a man to help him, and that man did help him, because David himself acknowledged his sin.

God sent Nathan, another prophet. Nathan told him a parable to help him. A rich man, when a guest came to him, took a poor man’s little ewe lamb and prepared it for the feast. The poor man had only that one lamb, while the rich man had many animals of his own from which he could have prepared the meal. Nathan asked, “What should be done to this man, O king? You know the law.” David answered, “That man deserves to die.” Sadly, you are the man who deserves to die, because you did this very thing: you took a poor man’s wife, had him killed, and made his wife, Bathsheba, your own, though you could have had five hundred women. What did David answer? “I have sinned against the Lord.” And what did Nathan reply? “The Lord also has put away your sin.” A prophet hears the confession of a prophet.

Through one prophet, God forgives another prophet. “The Lord also has put away your sin.” Nathan said this to him by God’s command: “Tell him that I forgive him.” It is the same today: by God’s command, the clergyman says, “Your sins are forgiven.” It is not the priests who forgive, as some people imagine—not sinful priests, bishops, and the rest, whom it has lately become fashionable to disparage. No, my beloved; the Holy Spirit forgives. In the Orthodox Church, the clergy perform no Mystery by their own grace or power. Consider Holy Matrimony. What does the priest say? Does he say, “I crown you,” as the Roman Catholic priest does? No. He says, “The servant of God, N., is crowned unto the handmaid of God, N.”

“In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” He is crowned; the priest does not say, “I crown you.” At Baptism, what does the Orthodox Church say through the clergyman? “The servant of God, N., is baptized.” He is baptized; the priest does not say, “I baptize you,” as others do. No: “The servant of God, N., is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” If the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are sinful, then get up, leave, and never come back here. When a person makes his Holy Confession, what does the priest say? “I forgive you,” as others say? No. He prays: “You, O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ loose also this servant of Yours. You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all!”

I am merely an instrument. When has one of our priests ever drawn grace out of his own pocket or trouser leg to distribute it? Are we going to accuse him of being a sinner and therefore say that the Mystery has no effect? Have you not heard that beautiful crowning prayer in our Holy Church at the end of the Divine Liturgy—that masterpiece without equal in the world, the Holy Eucharist, through which God has mercy upon the world? Have you not heard how, at the end, the priest comes to the doors to give the blessing, and the people say through the chanter: “Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Holy father, bless”? Yet the priest does not bless by his own power. What does he do? He turns to Christ and says: “O Lord, who blesses those who bless You and sanctifies those who trust in You, save Your people and bless Your inheritance.” Not I, the sinner, but You, O Lord!

Do you not see this? The devil deceives us, and we remain far from the means we ought to use. The subject we are discussing is boundless—truly boundless. I could go on speaking to you about it; I would need five years, shut away where no one could interrupt us. Moreover, those of you who read the Old Testament know that confession to God through another human being is already found there. God is the One who forgives. Even the devil suggests: “What do you imagine, you fool? When you make your confession, do you think you are confessing to the priest? No—you are confessing to Manolis!”

Yet beside that priest stand Gabriel and Michael; it is to God that you confess. But you see a priest and imagine that you are confessing merely to him. No, you are confessing to God. And this is true—absolutely true. There are beautiful passages on confession, on the disclosure of sins—not on some bare, Protestant notion of repentance, but on confession. If you wish, read Leviticus 5:4–5 and you will find it there, and also Joshua 7:19. Listen to what Joshua says in that passage. Joshua spoke to a man who had sinned by stealing spoils from a battle, things he had been forbidden to take.

The man stole them, and he was to be put to death if he did not repent. Joshua said to Achan, the thief: “My son, give glory now to the Lord, the God of Israel. Glorify God and confess to Him.” Pay attention to what follows. He was not to confess to Joshua as though Joshua were God. “Confess to Him, and now tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.” You confess to Him, but you tell it to me. Is this passage absent from those scriptural scholars who claim to defend Holy Scripture and to believe only what the Word of God says? They behave as though these words came from the bushes rather than from the Word of God. Forgive my manner and the force of my words. But, my beloved, if we let these matters slip away from us, we are lost. If we do not grasp this truth here and put it into action, we are lost.

Time does not permit me to continue now. I see that the subject must be taken up again, so, if God grants us life, I will add something more tomorrow evening. I want to believe, by the grace of God, that He is watching over us at this very moment, because we are not here alone. Invisibly present among us is our Lord Jesus Christ, who opens our hearts according to our receptiveness. Do you know what Paul said? In the Acts of the Apostles, when he was in Philippi speaking to the people, it says, “The Lord opened Lydia’s heart.” Why did He not open another person’s heart? Because their nous, their spiritual mind, was occupied with worldly fashions. They were present, but thinking about fashion. Lydia, however, had opened her spiritual mouth; and when she opened it, Christ also opened her heart. She was the first there to believe in...

Whatever she heard, she put into action; she received it and guarded it zealously, as the womb guards the seed of life. She nourished it and brought it to maturity, and her name is inscribed for eternity in the records of God. As long as the world exists, her name will be remembered. I believe that the same thing is happening here this evening. And I pray to the Holy God that we will allow Him, more and more, to give to us and to make us useful. This is what happened with the Apostles as well.

Να θέσω ένα ερώτημα στον εαυτό μου και σ' αυτούς που με ακούνε ή μέλλει να με ακούσουν. Με τι τρόπο ο άνθρωπος γυρίζει στον Παράδεισο;

Έπρεπε ο άνθρωπος να σταθεί με δέος. «Μα, Χριστέ μου, στον Άδη πήγες, δεν είχες τίποτα άλλο να μας πεις; Τι είναι αυτό που λες, τι είναι αυτό που φτιάχνεις;» «Μα γι' αυτό πήγα στον Άδη. Για τις αμαρτίες σας πήγα στον Άδη. Για τις αμαρτίες σας αυτές με καρφώνουν ακόμα. Και πήγα στον Άδη να σας φέρω ένα φάρμακο». Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ σας τον Ιωάννη, που αναφέρει τα περιστατικά της παρουσίας του Χριστού μας εκεί στη μικρή Γαλιλαία, όταν έλειπε ο Θωμάς;
