Summary

Repentance and confession form one inseparable sacrament through which sinners change their lives and return to Christ. Tears of repentance restore divine grace, relieve the soul, and become spiritually effective when joined to confession before the priest appointed by the Church. The risen Christ entrusted the Apostles with the Holy Spirit and authority to forgive or retain sins, which continues through their successors in the Orthodox priesthood.

Tonight, by the grace of God, allow me to speak about a subject that is always timely: metanoia, or repentance, and confession. Someone may ask why it is always timely. Because sin is always with us. We are always sinning. Since, then, we are always becoming soiled, we will always need to be washed clean. It is true that many people have confessed, just as it is true that many people have repented. But few have both repented and confessed.

I do not know whether you caught the play on words. There are people who have repented but have never confessed, and there are people who confess regularly but have never repented. The Mystery is not divided in two. The Mystery is repentance and confession together. There is no repentance without confession, nor confession without repentance. Unfortunately, most of us fall into one of those two categories. Few belong to the third: those who have truly repented, changed their lives, and now walk toward Christ. Many people do not make use of this Mystery. They find other ways to settle their affairs.

They do good works; they claim they have repented and say they did not know what they were doing; they make vows, give alms, and do all sorts of things. But no such means can cleanse even a single sin, as I told you another evening. God has appointed a particular way. He does not ask a person to confess unless that person first repents and acknowledges the sin. God accepts confession when it flows from repentance. I do not know whether this makes an impression on you, or whether you have ever wondered why God asks a person to repent; why John the Forerunner, when he came into the world, said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand”; and why Christ, when He began His public ministry, took up the Forerunner’s very words and said:

“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” And He added two more words: “And believe in the Gospel.” What is this repentance? Why does God ask repentance of a person? Why does He not simply ask for good works and say, “Come, and I will bring you into the Kingdom of Heaven”? If someone wishes to learn why, he must look back to the first two human beings. He must also examine himself and ask where he stands: in Paradise or outside Paradise? He will discover that he is outside Paradise. Why is he outside Paradise? Because his forefather was driven out of Paradise. And why was he driven out? Because he sinned. Was that the only reason he was driven out of Paradise? No. That is not the whole truth. It was also because he did not repent.

We will not be condemned to Hell merely because we sinned, just as Adam was not condemned merely because he sinned, but because we did not repent. You will sin—you will sin. You are human; you are dust. Is it possible for you never to sin? “He remembered, O Lord, that we are dust.” What, then, do You expect from dust? Do You demand righteousness? No, I do not demand righteousness. You will fall, but why do you not get up again? That is where things go wrong for us. Why do you not rise? We are, then, the descendants of a sinful and unrepentant man. Adam was not driven out simply because he sinned, but also because he did not repent, even though God gave him every opportunity to do so. God left him face-to-face with his failure. He allowed him to see his nakedness, to see that he had not become God, and to repent. But Adam did not repent; he merely shifted the responsibility.

We do the same when we go to confession. Sometimes we accuse everyone else: “He made me do it; she told me to; Satan led me astray; it was my neighbor, my girlfriend, my friend, my father, my mother.” We ourselves did nothing; we are innocent doves, and everyone else is to blame. That was how Adam and Eve justified themselves. They shifted the responsibility: Adam blamed Eve and God, who had made Eve; Eve blamed the serpent and God, who had made the serpent. Because of both their sin and their refusal to repent, they were driven out of Paradise. Since there were two causes of their expulsion—sin and lack of repentance—what must bring us back? Sinlessness, or repentance?

It is impossible for us to be sinless. But it is possible for us to repent. To return inside Paradise, we must reverse the two very things by which our first parents were driven out. That is why God asks repentance of every descendant of Adam and Eve. “Repent”—that is, return. Have you ever read our funeral service? However much we avoid it, however often we knock on wood when we hear death mentioned, one day that service will be read over us too. And in the case of those who do not take heed now, some untrue things will be said there. At one point in the Evlogitaria it says, “Through repentance, I too have found the way.” Is that true? You departed unrepentant; what way did you find through repentance? If a person is to return and become once again a citizen of Paradise, by what manner of life will this happen?

He must find the way through repentance. No other way can bring a person back to Paradise. Since the road by which humanity went out was called lack of repentance, the road by which humanity returns must be called repentance. “Through repentance, I too have found the way”—not through my works. Through repentance I too found the way and became once again a citizen of Paradise. And if one evening, during Vespers, you listen while the priest stands with his epitrachelion hanging down, with his whole parish beneath its fringes—for those fringes represent his parishioners, those souls—do you know what he says there in a secret prayer to God, to our Christ?

“Receive us in repentance and confession.” We surrender ourselves to You tonight, and if we die and You take us to be near You, receive us in repentance and confession. Yet many times even the priest himself is unrepentant and has not confessed. We speak words that are not true.

God bears with us and grants us further years and seasons so that we may understand these things and put them into practice. These days, above all, are especially suited to this. Everyone is moved: atheists, blasphemers, fornicators, adulterers, and adulteresses. The whole world is moved during these days. Even atheists and those without religion sense that something is happening among the Orthodox during this season. Whether they choose to make use of what is happening is another matter, for God has left human beings free to act as they wish, if they wish. “Whoever desires to come after Me.” Human free will possesses great power in this present age. But in the age to come, the justice of God, the grasp of God, will seize a person and take him where he does not wish to go.

So, this is our subject: repentance and confession. Many people say, “But we have been baptized. Where is confession mentioned? How is it spoken of? Why should we confess?” and so on. These instructions have existed from the earliest days. A person must understand that, because of his first sin—ancestral sin—he must be buried. He comes as a sinner and is buried. Baptism is not merely a social bond between godparents, nor a transaction, nor some empty custom. It is not a matter of one godparent choosing another; it is Mystery joined to Mystery. A dead person is buried, and a new person comes forth. A dragon is buried, and an angel, a saint, comes forth. If the child is a girl, a little she-dragon is buried.

That was grandmother’s way of expressing theology: a little saint comes forth. It is a tremendous thing. Whatever sins a person has committed up to the day of Baptism, whether he is baptized as a child or as an adult, are cleansed. If he is a child, he bears only ancestral sin. If he is an adult, he will also have other, deliberate sins, as Saint Constantine the Great did, for example. He may even have committed murders. But because he was baptized as an adult, all these things were cleansed. Baptism, then, cleanses every sin committed before Baptism. Yet afterward, the person continues to sin. These later sins cannot be cleansed by another Baptism. There cannot be another Baptism: there is “one Baptism.” Christ died once and rose once; we too will die once and rise once. What, then, can be done? There is a second Baptism.

A second Baptism. Whatever sin a person may commit—even murder—just as the first Baptism cleanses it, so the second Baptism cleanses every sin committed after Baptism. This second Baptism, as I shall explain, is repentance and confession. Listen to an example involving a terrible sin committed by human beings. As you know, the Jews crucified Christ. Afterward, the Apostles went out and preached, and the Jews heard them say, “The One whom you crucified is the One whom we proclaim to you as risen.” I will read to you from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter two, verse thirty-seven: “Now when they heard this”—those who had killed Christ, those who had killed Christ—“when they heard this...”

“They were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles, ‘Men and brethren, what shall we do?’” Yes, we did this. We crucified Him. But what shall we do now, men and brethren? In the same way, we can say, “Yes, Lord, we have sinned. What can we do now?” Listen to the command given then, and you will understand the command given now. “What, then, shall we do, men and brethren?” “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” Thus, those who were unbaptized needed Baptism.

Whatever sins they had committed were cleansed. But after Baptism, any further sins have another means by which they may be cleansed. This is the second Baptism: repentance and confession. And if it is accompanied by even one tear of repentance, it becomes a true washing. It is as though you were baptized again. I do not know whether you have ever prayed before Christ and His holy icon, acknowledging your sins, and then wept as tears came to your eyes. The more you weep, the greater the relief you will feel afterward. Weeping and tears may exhaust the body. The body may grow weak and weary, but inwardly the soul will be lightened.

And if this takes place before the priest, before the Church, before the one appointed to absolve sins, imagine how greatly the person will be relieved. Saint Gregory the Theologian says, “Even one falling tear is equal to the washing.” A single falling tear of repentance is equal to the washing. I told you one evening about the man who went to confess and was given a small barrel. He was told, “If you fill this, your sins will be forgiven.” For many years he could not fill it. But when at last he stood before it and wept, a single tear fell into it, and the barrel was filled. This is exactly what happens in our spiritual life. Therefore, “Even one falling tear of repentance is equal to the washing”—that is, to Baptism—“and a sigh...”

“A sigh born of travail brings back the grace that departed only a short while before.” When you sinned, grace departed. The Holy Spirit does not remain with you and join you in sinning. Many times even the angel departs. The angel turns away his face and leaves. He cannot look upon the many lawless and unnatural sins that we commit. He turns away his face and departs. He may remain near us through other sins, but the angel will not stand before acts that are contrary to nature. Thus, grace departs when a person sins, and Satan enters. The raven enters, and the dove flies away. The person must repent and acknowledge that he has sinned; then grace will return. There are two gifts of grace. The first is Baptism.

The second Baptism is “grace after grace.” And do you know the bold statement made by Saint John Climacus? Listen: “Greater than Baptism, after Baptism, is the fountain of tears.” He says that the tears of repentance shed afterward are greater than Baptism. It is a bold statement—how can we put it? It is indeed bold to say such a thing, but it is true. “For the former,” the first Baptism, “cleanses us from the evils committed beforehand.” It cleansed us from ancestral sin and from our other sins. “But the latter cleanses those committed afterward”—those committed after Baptism. “And although we all received the former as infants, we defiled it.” We all received it when we were little, as infants, and we stained it.

Let me take this opportunity to give you an answer you can use. John Climacus is a Father of the seventh century. Yet now the Protestants, who appeared in the sixteenth century, come and tell us, “Infant Baptism is false.” But here this Father speaks about infants. Therefore, the Church practiced infant Baptism from her earliest days. And since the Church has possessed infant Baptism from the beginning, firsthand, from apostolic times, who are we to correct the Church? “Although we all received the former as infants, we defiled it; but through the latter we cleanse the former again. If this had not been given to mankind by God in His love for humanity...”

“Know,” he says, “that if this Mystery of repentance and confession had not been given to mankind, those who are saved would indeed be rare and difficult to find.” There would be no one. Who has passed through this earthly life without sinning and without needing the priest’s epitrachelion? Who can say, “I did not sin; I kept my Baptism pure”? Is there such a person? Not even Abraham could say that. Who, then, can? We have all needed grace—all of us. Saint Isaac the Syrian, another Father of nepsis, or watchfulness, says concerning the same subject: “Grace after grace.” The first grace is Baptism. Repentance was given to mankind after Baptism as grace after grace. After Baptism, repentance gave human beings another gift of grace, so that when they sin—as human beings do—they may be restored.

“For repentance is a second rebirth from God.” The first rebirth is Baptism. But since we soil it, we need a second rebirth. “And the pledge we received through faith in Baptism, we receive as its full gift through repentance.” Just as we first believed and received grace, so we receive it again through repentance. “Repentance is the door of mercy.” The door stands open. Unless you pass through the door of repentance, there is no other way. Remember, Christ gave Peter the keys and said to him, “Peter, receive the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.” These keys are nothing other than the power to bind and to loose. For He goes on to say, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” So if you do not pass through the door of repentance, but approach with your own ego, saying, “I am fine; I have no need of these things,” you will not enter.

“Through this door we come to divine mercy, and apart from this entrance you will find no mercy.” There is no other way. And yet, my dear ones, under various pretexts, many people remain far away even to this day. Perhaps it is because they have many sins, as we have said, or because they have not understood the matter exactly as our Holy Church teaches it. If this Mystery did not exist, then, as the Fathers say here, there would be no one who could be saved. We would all stand condemned, because we sin in word, in deed, and in thought. Confessing before another person is what makes this difficult. The difficult thing is to repent properly.

Many of us repent in this way: “Of course I should not have done that; my conscience is troubling me.” Then a person rushes to do certain things merely to quiet his conscience. But he does not do what is right, because he must understand that when he breaks a law, when he sins, his sin goes in two directions. The person stands here, as it were, at the meeting point: above him are God and the Gospel, and before him is his fellow man. Suppose you stole something: you wronged your fellow man and transgressed God’s commandment against theft. You committed fornication: you wronged your fellow man and transgressed the commandment concerning fornication. You blasphemed: you offended God and harmed another person. Consequently, two things are necessary.

You must be reconciled both with God and with your fellow man. You stole from someone, so you return what you took. Is everything now settled? You asked his forgiveness, but the matter is still not settled, because God told you, “You shall not steal.” You must also go to confession, because you transgressed God’s commandment. There are two parties involved. Consequently, you cannot settle the matter by yourself. You must necessarily come to God. Now you may say, “I will tell God directly.” He does not receive it in that way; He has appointed a particular way. Let me give you an example. You owe money to a bank, and you go to the manager or the principal shareholder and say, “Sir, I owe this amount; here is the check.” What answer will you receive?

“You must go to the appropriate clerk and then to the cashier to make the payment.”

“But are you not the manager?” “Yes, I am the manager, but this is how the bank operates. You must go to the appropriate clerk.” Or suppose you have a check to cash and you go to the manager to ask for the money. Again, he will send you to the appropriate clerk and the cashier to receive it. If you insist on receiving the value of the check directly from the manager or the principal shareholder, you will never receive it, even if you wait until you die. It is the same with Christ. Although He is the One who instituted the Mystery, founded the Church, and established all these things, He has appointed a particular order—a transaction, so to speak, carried out through certain persons. Let me put it plainly. I do not know whether you are familiar with a certain...

...type, or rather symbol, of sin called leprosy. Leprosy, as you may know, is a type of sin. If you open Leviticus in the Old Testament, chapters 13 and 14, you will find that physicians deal with every illness except leprosy. In the Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 38, it says, “Give the physician his place, for you have need of him.” Are you ill? Call the physician. “The Lord created medicines from the earth,” for they too are necessary. God made the herbs, enlightened the scientists, and they discovered medicines.

Use them and say, “Glory to God.” Suppose your head aches and you say, “I will not take an aspirin.” You will end up banging your head against the floor. “I will pray to God instead.” God will not heal you in that way when medicine is available. You will take the medicine, humble yourself, and then you will recover and find relief. If you say, “I refuse to take it,” your head will continue to ache, and who knows what may happen afterward. So, as I was saying, physicians had authority to give their judgment concerning every illness. But in the case of leprosy, the priests—the clergy—gave the judgment. Open the Scriptures and see. God sat down, as another Hippocrates, and told them: “If the lesion is like this, if it has this color, if it is this deep, then you shall do this, this, and this.” And when the leprosy took a particular form, they would issue a document declaring, “Outside the village; outside the town.”

Outside the city. That is why Christ encountered the lepers from afar, at a distance, outside the settlement. When these people were healed of their leprosy, what did He tell them? “Go,” He said, “and show yourselves to the priests.” They would give them official clearance to return to society. The priests had told them to go outside, and the priests would tell them that they could come back inside. Sadly, no: if someone tries to settle the matter by himself, it is not settled. The leprosy of the soul must be dealt with by the clergyman, for he has received the command to do so. There are countless examples showing that leprosy is a type of sin. Let me give you one or two. When God spoke with Moses and told him to go and bring the people out of Egypt, Moses, because he was slow of speech...

...thought that bringing out the people depended on cleverness. He said, “I cannot go. I cannot speak; I cannot go.” God said to him, “Who made the mouth? Who made the tongue? Who made the mute? Whatever you may be, do you think you will go by your own courage and strength? Put your hand inside your garment.” So Moses put his hand inside. “Now take it out,” God told him. He drew it out and was terrified: his hand was completely leprous. “Put it back inside your garment,” He said. Moses put it back. “Now take it out again.” He drew it out, and it was clean. You are leprous; you are sinful. Will you accomplish this work? I will accomplish it. That is what man is. This was one of the many tests God gave him. Open Exodus and read these things. I did not invent them here in Athens; they are in our Holy Scripture. And when Gehazi deceived...

...the distinguished Syrian and took some garments and other things from him, Elisha asked him, “Where were you?” Gehazi replied, “Nowhere. I was here; I did not go anywhere.” “So you were nowhere? Then the leprosy of Naaman shall be upon you,” Elisha told him, and Gehazi came out white as snow. Why did he become white as snow? Because he had sinned. Have you ever read Numbers, chapter 12, where Aaron and his sister Miriam were, as we say, wagging their tongues against Moses because he had married an Ethiopian woman? What happened? Have you read it? Open the book and learn; read it. Miriam became white as snow with leprosy because of her little tongue. Do not be misled because today we do not become outwardly leprous. We still become inwardly leprous. Where? Within ourselves. What happened then?

Strangely, Aaron did not become leprous. Why did Aaron not become leprous? Because he was the high priest, and the priesthood does not become leprous. I repeat: Aaron did not become leprous because he was the high priest, and this clearly shows that the priesthood does not become leprous. His sister became white as snow. They begged Moses to pray to God that her leprosy might be removed. God accepted Moses’ prayer, but said, “She must fulfill a canon, a rule of penance,” just as we too are given a canon. “She shall remain outside the camp for one week, so that she may learn the consequences of her sin, and then she will be cleansed.” And indeed, she remained outside for a week and afterward was cleansed. There are other cases in the Old Testament proving that leprosy is a type of sin. But what I especially wanted to say is this:

When Christ encountered the lepers and they cried out to Him, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us,” Christ said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” Although He Himself had appointed the priests and established the Law, He did not accept any other way. “You must go to them,” He said, though He had not yet healed them. As they went, they were healed and cleansed, because they obeyed. Yet we put our own reasoning first and say, “I do not believe it,” “What have I done wrong?” or “Why must I go?” Such are our arguments, supposedly theological though they are not. Those who reason this way must open the Gospel of John, chapter 20, verses 20 and 21. We thank our Holy God that together we may hear the will of God.

But we must also live by it. Christ appeared to many throughout that day: to Mary Magdalene, to the Myrrh-bearing Women, to Peter, to those on the road to Emmaus, and to others. That evening, when the doors were shut, He stood in their midst—Thomas being absent—and twice said to them, “Peace be with you.” Then He said, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” With what authority? How did the Father send You? With every authority.

To bind and to loose sins. “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

So then, this Mystery was instituted on that evening of Pentecost—forgive me, on the evening of the Resurrection. Christ departed shortly afterward, leaving the Apostles; the Apostles left their successors, and so it continued. To this day, this Mystery exists among the Orthodox. Others abolished these things and no longer have them. That is why they remain in their sins. One Father whom everyone trusts, and whose soundness, authenticity, and truth no one has any reason to question, is the divine John Chrysostom. Do you know what the divine John Chrysostom says about the clergy, those who hear confessions and forgive people? Do you know? “Those who dwell upon the earth and make their home here have been entrusted with the administration of things in heaven.” Those who dwell here on earth...

...and spend their lives here have been granted the authority to administer the things of heaven. “And they have received an authority that God gave neither to angels nor to archangels.” An angel cannot absolve you of your sins. A sinful priest can absolve you of your sins. “For He did not say to them,” that is, to the angels, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” “Those who rule on earth also have authority to bind.” They can seize you, put you in prison, and bind you—but only your body, only your body, “not the soul as well.” Whatever the priests do below, God ratifies above, and the Master confirms the judgment of His servants.

He countersigns what that humble, sinful priest told you when you went to him for confession.

You can tell your sins anywhere. There is a particular demon roaming throughout the Orthodox world: the deaf and mute demon, the one that possessed the boy in the Gospel passage we heard on the Fourth Sunday of the Fast. The Church deliberately appointed that passage there because many of us who are going up toward Jerusalem suffer from this deaf and mute demon. We refuse to declare our sins. It is a particular demon that seizes a person’s ear and prevents him from hearing anything good, though it allows him to hear everything evil. It also seizes his tongue and prevents him from confessing his sins where he ought to confess them. Wonderful.

A woman says to her girlfriend, “Dear, last night I did this, that, and the other, in this way and that,” and so on. People tell their friend, they tell it at the café, they tell it in the marketplace. But the demon forbids them to tell it to the priest.

No matter where else we tell our sins, they are not wiped away or destroyed. They live on and bear children, for many people learn sins and sinful schemes from others. But when a person tells them to his spiritual father and confessor, he has a sponge and wipes them away. That is why Satan lets a person tell them to the whole world, but will not let him tell them to his confessor. Do you understand? It is not enough, then, to confess your pain and your sin to just anyone; you must go to the person appointed for this purpose. That is also why not every priest is a confessor. The authority to hear confessions has been given to the bishops, who are the successors of the Holy Apostles.

Because the bishops cannot personally serve so many Christians, they select experienced priests whom they judge capable of bearing the weaknesses of others. They give them a letter of authorization to hear confessions on the bishop’s behalf. That is why, when confessors encounter a difficult case, they turn to their bishop and say, “Your Eminence, I have encountered this situation, this problem, involving a married couple or an individual. How should I proceed?” And their spiritual shepherd gives them the appropriate remedy. So the absolving of sins does not belong to everyone. Tell me whatever you like—but if you tell me your sins, can I absolve you of them?

You have heard my sins; can you absolve me of them? Yet some people who listen to Protestant preaching say, “Do you not hear the Gospel, where James says, ‘Confess your trespasses to one another, that you may be healed’? He is speaking about all of us.” But he is speaking about priests and confessors. Although a confessor hears another person’s confession and absolves his sins...

...he cannot absolve his own sins. Therefore, “confess to one another”: you confess yours to another confessor, and he confesses his to you, if you wish to be healed. This was said first and foremost about us priests. Yet they take a verse concerning priests and their own confession and apply it to everybody. “Look,” they say, “we have confession too.” Very well, you will tell me what shameful things you have done. Will those sins then remain, fester, and somehow disappear? Or you will listen to mine. Do you have the authority to absolve them? You do not.

As you have heard, that authority has been given to certain people. Pay close attention to these things, because you are living amid great confusion, and you may find yourselves deceived on that Day. You must not tell your sins to just anyone; you must tell them to the person appointed for this ministry. Saint Basil the Great puts it beautifully: “Just as people do not disclose the ailments of the body to everyone, nor to whoever happens to be there...” You do not go up to just anyone and say, “I am ill; my stomach hurts.” Why tell me? Go to a physician. “My eye hurts.” Why tell me? Am I an ophthalmologist? Go to the proper doctor. Is that not so? If your eye hurts, will you go to a general physician or to an ophthalmologist? You will go to the appropriate person. In the same way, if you have sin, you must go to the person appointed for this, who has the command to bind and loose. Do whatever you like—even throw yourself upon the ground—but the sin will not go away.

Saint Basil says, “People disclose the ailments of the body neither to everyone nor to whoever happens to be there, but to those experienced in treating them.” You go to the appropriate doctor, to what we call a specialist. “In the same way, the confession of sins is made before those who are able to heal them”—those who have the power and the command to heal. It is not for just anyone. Yet we are deceived. Some even say, “I will tell my sins directly. Is not Christ present everywhere? I will tell them before His icon.” And what will the icon say to you? When you are ill, do you take a photograph of your doctor and say, “Doctor, I am in pain”? Or do you go to him so that he can examine and treat you? He writes a prescription, and you follow it properly. If you need an injection, he gives you one. You go to the person appointed for this purpose.

“Forgive me.” Does the Most Holy Theotokos forgive sins? Does our Most Holy Theotokos have the authority to bind and loose? She herself called Christ her Savior: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” Neither Christ forgives apart from the means He appointed, nor does the Most Holy Theotokos, nor the Saints, nor the Angels. The priest pronounces absolution—fix this firmly in your nous, your spiritual intellect. He has been given this power and authority. When you bow your head, kneel, and confess, he stretches his hands over you and says, “You, O Lord, have said: Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed. Loose also this Your servant.” This is how it is: the priest is the instrument, and Christ acts...

...through the priest. You must go there and humble yourself, expose your shame, and bring everything out into the open. That is the purpose. This authority was given neither to Angels nor to Archangels. Do you remember what our Most Holy Theotokos did at the wedding in Cana? Christ said, “My hour has not yet come.” In other words, “I do not intend to begin working miracles yet.” But the Most Holy Theotokos persisted and said, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Do whatever He tells you. “My part was to speak to Him and entreat Him; He is the One who will perform the miracle.” The same is true now. I will entreat Him to wait for you, but you must go and do what He tells you. By doing what He tells you, you are saved. We do not keep this in mind as much as we should. And to this very day, many people have never...

...confessed. They have repented but not confessed, or they have confessed but not repented. They confess so they can receive Holy Communion on Great and Holy Thursday, but at Pascha they do the same things again. They confess so they can receive Holy Communion at Christmas, but the very next day they return to the same things. They are amphibious, like frogs that come out of the mud and, as soon as they see something, splash straight back in. They have not left their former way or changed their lives. Metanoia, repentance, means a complete change of direction. I was going one way, and now I turn and go in exactly the opposite direction—not merely a little to the side. Most of us have simply added Christ to our existing lives. We had no icons, so we put up some icons too.

But have we taken down the corrupt pictures? We merely make the sign of the Cross as well, while the marriage bed remains closed to children and the kitchen knows no fasting. Is that change? No. We have merely changed the scenery. We have even hung up an oil lamp, as though the Saints were there to make sure we do not fall—but our life has not changed. Repentance requires works. “Bear fruits worthy of repentance,” because the Pharisees, the scribes, and the people of Jerusalem also went to John the Forerunner to confess. And what did he tell them? “Bear fruits worthy of your repentance. Prove to me that you have repented, brood of vipers.” That is what he said. If you bear fruits worthy of repentance, you will act justly where you once committed injustice. You have wronged a woman and left her weeping; you took her husband, the father of her children. Where will you go? Where will you stand? Or perhaps you took the mother of someone’s children. Where will you go, sir? Where will you go, young man? You must put these things right. Repent in dust and ashes. While you still live here, God accepts such repentance. He is forbearing!

He is longsuffering, but He does not forget. Yet the axe will fall if we do not make good use of His forbearance. All these days are offered to us for precisely this purpose: they help us pause, take stock of our lives, and change. I found the following in Church history: “From the beginning, it seemed good to the priests...” From the beginning, the Church—and Christ Himself—gave the priests the practice of “declaring sins publicly, before the multitude of the Church as witnesses.” People would come openly before everyone, stand up, and confess their sins. Later, however, this was recognized as dangerous in many cases. For if I come and say...

...“I committed fornication with your daughter,” you may pull out a pistol and kill me. I say it in repentance, but you treat it as a matter of honor and blow my brains out. Or perhaps I stole from you, or I committed a murder, and I stand up and say, “I did it.” Do you understand? That is why the Church arranged for each person to confess privately, face to face with one confessor, and for whatever is confessed there to remain buried there. This is also why we may go to confessors who do not know us, so that we will not be hindered by the shame or fear Satan plants in us—the thought that they know us and will reveal what we say. Confessors neither take our fingerprints nor ask our name or where we come from. There is no excuse. Of course, as I told you, some people still make excuses and raise certain objections.

I would like to answer some of them.

Many say, for example, that the priest is a sinner. “Should I receive antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, from his hand? Should I go and confess to him? Should I do anything through him?” Someone else says that grace is not with him. People entertain such thoughts, and I would like to find the relevant passage and read to you how these matters truly stand, because many are deceived by this scheme of Satan.

They stay away. Listen to the teaching of Saint Anastasios of Sinai, a Father of nepsis, or watchfulness, who had no reason to deceive us or take our money: “Do not say, ‘The one who offers is sinful; he is condemned; he is unworthy; the grace of the All-Holy Spirit does not descend upon him.’ Think none of these things, but know that there is One who knows and examines what is hidden.” Behind the priest stands Another who sets these matters right. Many people seek an educated priest. If one is available, by all means find him. But if there is not, understand that the forgiveness of your sins is not a matter of education; it is a matter of the Holy Spirit.

Because one priest is highly educated, will he read you a different prayer? He will read the same prayer. So go wherever your soul finds peace. There are both educated priests and badly formed ones, certainly. But if no learned priest is available, you are going there because of your sins, not to display your intellect. You are going to cleanse your soul, and any Orthodox epitrachelion—the priestly stole—can be the instrument through which the soul is cleansed. If the priest is also educated, you may discuss politics, matters outside the Church, and Church affairs as well. As though there were nothing else to talk about! People do not go to weep over their sins; they go to ask about various questions and personal affairs. But if you cannot find such a priest, go and confess to the priest who has grace, ordination, power, and the authority to loose and bind. You may then...

...look elsewhere for someone to help resolve those other concerns. First, however, resolve the matters of your soul and your sin. As I have said, no icon and no Saint forgives sins; Christ alone forgives them through the clergy. Even He does not forgive them apart from the means He appointed, but through the clergy. That is why this point on which I insist and which I repeat is essential, especially during these days. I do not know whether you have noticed what happened when David sinned, committing the twofold mortal sin of adultery and murder: he took the wife of a poor officer and at the same time had the man killed so that he could possess her. Do you understand what a victory this was for Satan over a man...

...who was also a king? David was not an ordinary man. He was both prophet and sovereign, king and prophet at once. Yet through the flesh Satan has great power and brings down many people. What did God do? He sent David a man who admonished him and presented the matter through a parable. He told him that a very rich man, wishing to prepare a feast, took a poor man’s little ewe lamb and used it for the feast, even though he had more than enough of his own. “What do you think of this, O king? What should I do to him? I was asked, but I did not know how to answer.” David said, “That man deserves to die.” “You are the man,” Nathan replied, “for you killed that other man, the poor officer, in order to take his wife.” Then...

...David turned and said, “I have sinned against the Lord.” He admitted it. He did not respond as we do: “Who told you that? Watch what you say! Do you know who I am?” and so on. “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan then said to him, “The Lord also has put away your sin.” The child, however, would die, because he was the fruit of lawlessness and could not go about as the king’s illegitimate child while people blasphemed God because of it. “The Lord has put away your sin”; He forgives you. What do we see here? One prophet hears another prophet’s confession, and through the prophet God forgives David’s sin: “The Lord has put away your sin.” He does not say, “I forgive you,” as the Roman Catholic Church says: “I forgive you.”

“I crown you; I baptize you; I hear your confession.” Not “I.” Rather: “The servant of God is crowned in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” “You, O Lord, have said: Whatever you bind...” It is not I who am the Truth; I am not the Truth. The priest is an instrument. Here we clearly see the prophet pronouncing forgiveness on Christ’s behalf: “The Lord has put away your sin.” This is how it is, my dear ones, whether we like it or not. Our sins are as numerous as the sand of the sea. This little book you see here contains six hundred sins. I mention this for those who say, “I have not killed anyone, I have not stolen, and I have done nothing wrong.”

It would be better to have killed a billion people than to say you have done nothing, when in fact you have killed your own soul. For a sinner who is still spiritually alive has the opportunity to cry out, “I have sinned,” and to say, “I am to blame.” But an egotist has killed his own soul; he does not repent, and he will be lost. It would be better to have killed everyone else than to have killed your own soul. Let me tell you an incident. Once, an expert in the Law—and what I am about to tell you comes from the Gospel; I have not made it up—asked Christ, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?” You will hear this Gospel reading on the evening of Great Tuesday. And Christ says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul,”

“with all your mind, with all your heart, and with all your strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Christ Himself said these things. So now I ask: Gentlemen, which is the great commandment? It is, “You shall love the Lord your God” with all your soul, with all your heart, and so forth. Then what is the great sin, you who say you have neither killed nor stolen? Is not the transgression of the first and great commandment also the first and greatest sin? I believe it is.

Tell me, then: who loves Christ with all his heart? And if he does not love Him, when has he ever gone to confession and said, “Father, I do not love Christ, and I ask Him to forgive me”? Do we love Christ with all our heart? Is our whole heart given to Christ? Our heart is a mosaic made up of many little pieces. Here is the wallet; there are the desires of the flesh; over there is the woman next door; here is gossip; there is fashion; here is this, and that, and something else besides. And then there is one little piece where Christ has also been placed, with a small vigil lamp burning before Him. But the rest of the soul’s mosaic belongs to the whole world. “You, Christ, sit over there with Your Mother, and if something happens, we will call out to You: Deliver me! Most Holy Theotokos, help me!” We treat the Most Holy Theotokos like a little maid or a nurse, and then we send her away. “Lady Theotokos, are you going to tell me what to sew or whether I should wear men’s clothing? Are you going to tell me to have children?”

“Today I am eating non-fasting food—out you go, Lady Theotokos.” Are these things true or not? Who loves God? And who has ever confessed this? Who has opened his wallet, as I was telling you the other day? Remember that lady who said, “If only money had wings”? “The wings are right there in your handbag,” I told her. Who has opened his wallet? Who has given the fruit of his labor for the love of Christ? I look around here—we number about ninety thousand—and I see five people who make sacrifices, who leave their homes, set aside their work, and run to offer service. They are people from elsewhere who have no personal connection with any of this. How many others could do the same? And if they cannot serve in that way, how many could offer one drachma a day so that God’s work may be done? Who has loved God? Whatever a person has learned, he must pass on to someone else.

It is an obligation. Am I not a transgressor of the first and great commandment? What more do I need to confess? And who loves his neighbor as himself?

Who loves his neighbors—or his enemies? And so I ask you: do we truly have nothing to confess? Pay attention, if you will, during these days, which help us in a certain way and offer us this opportunity. Let us seek out a spiritual father and make our confession; there will be time enough to sin again. And if we fall again, we will rise again. “To fall is human, but to remain fallen is satanic,” as the divinely inspired John Chrysostom says. We will all fall again. But if you fall in the street, will you refuse to get up simply because you might fall again a week later? What kind of reasoning is that? Why does a person take what happens in the material world and apply it to the spiritual life in this way? I pray to our holy God that some small good may come from these words spoken tonight, words so timely for these days.

Όπως κάνουμε κι εμείς όταν πάμε να εξομολογηθούμε. Καμιά φορά κατηγορούμε τους άλλους: «Με έβαλε, μου είπε, με παρέσυρε ο σατανάς, ο γείτονας, η φιλενάδα, ο φίλος, ο πατέρας, η μητέρα». Εμείς τίποτα, εμείς είμαστε περιστέρια, όλοι οι άλλοι φταίνε. Διότι έτσι δικαιολογήθηκε και ο Αδάμ και η Εύα. Μετεβίβασαν την ευθύνη, ο μεν Αδάμ εις την Εύα και στον Θεό που έφτιαξε την Εύα, η δε Εύα στον Όφιν και στον Θεό που έφτιαξε τον Όφιν, και διά την αμαρτία τους και την αμετανοησία τους εξώσθησαν του Παραδείσου. Όταν λοιπόν είναι δύο τα αίτια, αμαρτία και αμετανοησία, της εξώσεως, τι πρέπει να είναι η επαναφορά; Η αναμαρτησία ή η μετάνοια;

Το να είμεθα αναμάρτητοι δεν είναι δυνατόν. Όμως να μετανοήσουμε είναι δυνατόν και θα πρέπει να κάνουμε τα δύο ακριβώς εκείνα τα οποία έκαμαν οι πρώτοι κατά τον αντίθετο τρόπο και εξώσθησαν, για να επιστρέψουμε εμείς μέσα. Γι’ αυτό ζητάει από τον απόγονο του Αδάμ και της Εύας μετάνοια. «Μετανοείτε», ήτοι να επιστρέψετε. Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ τη νεκρώσιμη ακολουθία μας; Όσο και να την αποφεύγουμε, όσο και να χτυπάμε ξύλο άμα ακούμε θέματα θανάτου, θα μας τη διαβάσουνε κι αυτή μια μέρα. Και εκεί θα πούνε μερικά ψέματα για όσους δεν προσέξουν από τώρα. Μέσα στα ευλογητάρια λέει σε μια στιγμή: «Εὗρον κἀγὼ διὰ τῆς μετανοίας τὴν ὁδόν». Αλήθεια, επήρες αμετανόητος, ποια οδό βρήκες διά της μετανοίας; Για να επιστρέψει ο άνθρωπος, να ξαναγίνει πολίτης του Παραδείσου, πάλι ποιον πολίτευμα;

Να βρει τον τρόπον διά της μετανοίας. Κανένας άλλος τρόπος δεν γυρίζει τον άνθρωπο στον Παράδεισο. Εφόσον η οδός που έβγηκε ο άνθρωπος ελέγετο αμετανοησία, αυτή που θα επιστρέψει ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να λέγεται μετάνοια. «Εὗρον κἀγὼ διὰ τῆς μετανοίας τὴν ὁδόν», όχι διά των έργων μου· διά της μετανοίας την οδόν εὗρον κἀγώ και ξανά έγινα πολίτης του Παραδείσου. Αν ακόμη βάλετε το αυτί σας ένα βράδυ που γίνεται ο Εσπερινός, όπου ο ιερεύς το πετραχήλι το έχει κρεμάσει, όλη την ενορία του κάτω από τους κροσσούς —είναι οι ενορίτες του, οι ψυχές αυτές—, θέλετε να δείτε τι λέγει εκεί σε μια μυστική ευχή στον Θεό, στον Χριστό μας;

Να συμβιβαστείς με τον Θεό και με τον άνθρωπο. Τον έκλεψες τον άνθρωπο, του τα επιστρέφεις. Τακτοποιήθηκες; Του ζήτησες συγγνώμη; Δεν τακτοποιείσαι, διότι ο Θεός σού έχει πει «ου κλέψεις». Πρέπει να πας και να εξομολογηθείς, διότι παρέβης την εντολή του Θεού. Είναι δύο τα μέρη. Κατά συνέπεια μόνος σου δεν μπορείς να τακτοποιήσεις. Πρέπει απαραιτήτως να φτάσεις στον Θεό. Τώρα, «να τα πω στον Θεό». Δεν τα δέχεται, έχει έναν ειδικό τρόπο. Να σας πω ένα περιστατικό. Οφείλεις ένα ποσόν στην τράπεζα και πηγαίνεις στον διευθυντή ή στον μεγαλύτερο μέτοχο και του λες: «Κύριε τάδε, οφείλω ένα ποσόν, ορίστε το τσεκ». Ποια θα είναι η απάντηση;

τον επίσημο από τη Συρία και του πήρε μερικά ρούχα κ.λπ., που τον ερώτησε ο Ελισσαίος «Πού ήσουν;», κι αυτός λέει «Πουθενά, εδώ, δεν έφυγα». «Ώστε πουθενά δεν ήσουνα; Η λέπρα του Νεεμάν», του λέει, «επάνω σου». Και βγήκε ολόλευκος. Γιατί βγήκε ολόλευκος; Διότι ημάρτησε. Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ στο δωδέκατο κεφάλαιο των Αριθμών, όταν ο Ααρών με την αδελφή του τη Μαριάμ γλωσσοτρώγανε, κατά το δη λεγόμενο, τον Μωυσή, που δεν τους πήρε από λόγο που παντρεύτηκε μια Αιθιόπισσα; Τι έγινε; Έχετε διαβάσει; Ανοίξτε να το μάθετε, να διαβάσετε. Η Μαριάμ έγινε ολόλευκη από λέπρα, από τη γλωσσούλα της. Μην κοιτάτε σήμερα που δεν λεπρωνόμεθα εμείς εξωτερικώς. Ωστόσο, λεπρωνόμεθα εσωτερικώς. Πού; Μέσα λεπρωνόμεθα. Τι έγινε τότε;

Οι αρχιερείς, διότι δεν φτάνουν, δεν αρκούν για τόσο χριστιανικό κόσμο, διαλέγουν τους εμπείρους και εκείνους που καταλαβαίνουν ότι μπορούν να κρατήσουν αδυναμίες άλλων ανθρώπων. Και τους δίνουν μια ενταλτήριο επιστολή για λογαριασμό τους, ένα ενταλτήριο γράμμα, όπως λέγεται, για λογαριασμό του επισκόπου να εξομολογούν. Γι' αυτό κι αν συναντήσουν δύσκολη περίπτωση, οι πνευματικοί αποτείνονται στον επίσκοπό τους και του λένε: «Άγιε Δέσποτα, συναντώ αυτό το θέμα, αυτό το πρόβλημα σε ένα αντρόγυνο, σε ένα πρόσωπο. Πώς θα ενεργήσω;» Και ο Πνευματικός Δεσπότης τού δίδει την ανάλογο συνταγή. Δεν είναι του καθενός, λοιπόν, να λύει αμαρτίες. Πες μου ό,τι θέλεις. Τι; Άμα μου τις πεις, μπορώ εγώ να σου τις αφήσω;

Υποχρέωση. Εγώ δεν είμαι παραβάτης της πρώτης και μεγάλης εντολής; Τι άλλο θέλω; Και ποιος αγαπάει τον πλησίον του ως εαυτόν;
