Summary

Prayer is the soul’s oxygen, the essential communion with God that sustains spiritual life and brings divine grace into human need. Repentance, confession, and childlike humility allow prayer to appeal to God’s love, transforming judgment into forgiveness and beginning a new spiritual life. The prayer “O Heavenly King” asks the Holy Spirit to enable true prayer and confesses Him as the divine Comforter, the Spirit of truth, omnipresent and active in the Church.

Tonight, by the grace of God, I would like to say something that all of us need.

I would like to speak about what the Fathers call the oxygen of the human soul. This description may sound strange to you, and you may wonder when you hear that the soul, too, needs oxygen. You know that the body needs oxygen, but the soul needs oxygen as well. The oxygen of the soul is prayer. Those who do not pray are not spiritually well.

In other words, their spiritual system does not function properly. Just as people feel discomfort when there is not enough oxygen in the place where they live, so too does the human soul feel this distress. Without enough oxygen, it would go about, think, and function only poorly.

A Father of the Church says that it is better to remember God than to breathe. This may seem difficult, yet it is true. A person who does not pray is spiritually consumptive. As we have said here before, there is a threefold pattern that Christians should follow throughout the day: they should speak to God, let God speak to them, and speak about God. When they speak to God, they do so through prayer. The human being is the only

person, the only creature made by God, who has this right: to speak with his God and to pray to his God. Sadly, people know very little about this right, which they possess by grace, and they do not make use of it so as to receive its benefits. Prayer is—I hesitate to use the word, but it conveys the point more clearly—a magical key that opens every lock in all the difficulties of life.

If we look carefully, we will see that Christ Himself, during the difficult moments He endured on earth as a man, turned to prayer. Indeed, in His final days, in His great anguish, He prayed. And, Scripture says, an angel strengthened Him. Whom did the angel strengthen? God—Christ. Think of it: if Christ, as man, felt the need to pray, how much more should we feel that need, and how greatly we need this prayer. And yet people today

do not pray. Throughout the day they may say all kinds of things. They may whistle, sing, mutter, curse, and talk about this and that—but they do not pray. And if someone does pray, most often he is simply filling the air with words. That is not truly prayer. Few people pray with fervor, warmth, faith, and awareness, sending their prayer up to Heaven so that divine grace may be sent down in answer to our many needs, both spiritual and material. People today are tormented. They suffer and are filled with anxiety.

And so they end up in psychiatric hospitals and clinics. The mental hospitals are full, the neurological clinics are full. People cannot sleep; they suffer and are tormented because they do not pray. Instead, they try by their own methods and their own strength to solve the problems that arise for them day after day and at every hour.

The first human beings were the first to feel the need for prayer. If we open the Bible, we find that Adam’s first two children, Cain and Abel, felt the need to build an altar, offer sacrifice, and pray. I call them the first two children, although both Scripture and Tradition speak of Adam having many children—about sixty in all, thirty-three girls and twenty-seven boys. Yet only two, three, or four are mentioned in Scripture. So I mean the first two who are mentioned, Cain and Abel; they felt the need for prayer.

They felt the need to set up an altar and make an offering to God—that is, to offer a kind of prayer. Yet there we see that God is discerning. He does not attend to every prayer, answer every prayer, or accept every prayer. He does not merely listen to what is being said to Him; He looks at who is speaking. He does not look only at what you offer; He looks at how you offer it. This should be a lesson for all of us and should make us careful. We ourselves are not so discerning about our offerings and sacrifices to God. For the most part, our sacrifices are the sacrifices of Cain, not those of Abel. God looks at what is within a person and decides whether He should accept the

sacrifice—the prayer of those making the offering—and often He does not accept it, just as He did not accept Cain’s. Scripture tells us that Cain was a farmer, whereas Abel was a shepherd of sheep. When Cain prepared to make a sacrifice, he decided to offer what was useless, while Abel decided to offer what was good. When we give someone a gift, we choose it according to the person who will receive it.

We decide what kind of gift it should be. Often we even take care to buy it from a reputable shop, with a recognized brand name on it. We want either to place that person under an obligation to us or to repay a debt of gratitude because of some material help they gave us. Yet we often do not act this way toward God. That is why, although we are in the Church and come to the Church, our offering—our supplication, our prayer—does not rise straight up and is not accepted. It does not ascend directly “as incense before You,” as the Church says. Our prayer does not rise. “Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You.” Instead, it goes off to the side; it does not go straight to God. Our sin, our carelessness, and our irreverence prevent it from following the right path.

It bends away and falls back down; it does not reach God. It is rejected. Cain offered carelessly, without making any real sacrifice of his own. He took what was left over from the harvest, perhaps even what was useless, and offered it to God. We often do the same. We weary the goodness of God.

We keep everything good for ourselves and give Him what is bad. I remember once reading about a man who vowed that if God granted something he needed and helped him, he would divide with God whatever he gained that day. And indeed, God granted what he asked, resolved his difficulty, and helped him. As the man walked home, he came upon a sack of walnuts in the road. They had fallen from a passing cart, and he immediately thought that he must share them with God, because that was his vow.

And what do you think he did? He cracked the walnuts, kept the kernels for himself, and brought the shells to God, to the Church of God. That is what we usually do. But God, as you know, cannot be mocked; He sees how each person thinks. He did not accept Cain’s sacrifice because Cain had been careless. Abel, on the other hand, prepared himself. He considered to whom he was offering sacrifice and chose, Scripture says, the best lambs he had—the fattest and finest, the very ones he would otherwise have kept for a feast—and sacrificed them. And God accepted his offering. Yet even this was not enough to bring Cain to self-reproach and make him say, “Why was my offering rejected? I acted wickedly; I will correct myself.”

Instead, he felt hatred toward his brother and murdered him, as you know. God thus showed him that his brother was not at fault because his offering had been accepted. Cain himself was at fault because he had acted wickedly. God had been ready to accept Cain’s offering too, but He did not accept it because Cain treated God as though He were worth nothing and gave Him only what was spoiled and could not be used anywhere else. We make offerings like that too. Sometimes, supposedly for the good of our soul, we give away a pair of shoes that even a ragman would not take. We give a plate of food that has gone sour and that we could not use for anything. We give away, for the sake of our soul, some garment that can no longer be worn and fits no one. Such things burden our soul. They do not

lighten our soul; they weigh it down, because they are offered with calculating and deceitful intent. We offer only what we cannot use anywhere else. But no—you must offer from your poverty, with love and thoughtfulness, and then your offering is accepted before God. Above all, a person’s prayer must be pure. It must come not merely from clean teeth and a washed body, but from a clean heart. One must raise clean hands—not bloodstained, deceitful, or filthy hands. It is not a matter of how many feet long the candle you offer may be. You may have no candle to offer at all, not even the smallest one. Yet your prayer can reach Heaven if it comes from a clean and humble heart. It can knock at God’s door, present its petition, and bring the answer down to earth. Human prayer has this power.

Its power is in proportion to the purity of the one who prays. Prayer is a virtue, a weapon in human hands. A child can even overcome God. Someone may ask, “Can a weak human being, made of dust, overcome God?” Yes. He does not truly overcome God’s almighty power; he overcomes His love. Have you ever seen a grandfather play-wrestling with his little grandchild? The child, tiny as he is, puts his back into it and tries to topple his grandfather, and in the end you see the grandfather fall. The child rejoices and tells everyone, “I knocked Grandpa down! I threw Grandpa!” Was it the grandchild’s strength? No. It was the grandfather’s love for his grandchild that brought him down. So it is with God and man.

God is almighty. Yet when He sees a person with the soul of a child, He lets the sword of justice slip from His hands; He relents, He changes His judgment, and the person receives the complete opposite of what had been coming. He was about to be punished, but he is not punished, because he repents, humbles himself, and speaks a few words to God from his heart: “I was at fault. Yes, I have changed my mind, because I want to change my life.” You have overcome God. This is also confirmed and sealed through the Mystery of repentance and confession. You now hold the seal assuring you that God has forgiven you; things change in your life, and you turn a new page. How could you not long for that?

So, from the foundation of the world, from the time the first human beings appeared on earth, they felt the need to pray. From that very beginning, God showed that He is discerning and pays attention to the person who offers the prayer. There is a beautiful moment described by the Evangelist Mark. He presents Christ sitting opposite the treasury. The Lord sits there alone, outside, watching the prominent men enter, place money in the treasury, and bring candles and other offerings. When the scribes and Pharisees saw Christ there, they took out their money and threw it in ostentatiously.

They even made the coins clang, so that He would see how much they were putting in. He watched without saying anything. Then the widow came with her two small coins, as you know. She opened the little handkerchief where she kept them, found the two coins, and dropped them in. Then Christ said, “This widow has put in more than all the others.” Not merely more than one of them, but more than all of them together, however much they may have given. In My eyes, and in truth, she gave more than they did. For she gave her entire livelihood. You gave from your abundance; she gave from her poverty. And the Evangelist’s words are especially striking: “He watched how they put the money in.” Not what they put in, but how they put it in—with what expression and what disposition they offered their coins. He does not look at the outward appearance of what you do; He looks at why you do it.

The same applies to both a good deed and an evil deed. Why are you doing it? Why are you sinning? How did it begin? How did it come upon you? Did you pursue it yourself? Did someone else lead you astray? Was your mother at fault, or your priest, or your teacher? In what way were they at fault? Christ will examine all these things. He will not simply take up a sword and begin cutting off heads. He does not take one person and then another and judge them mechanically. One person may be sentenced to ten days in prison and another to a hundred years, according to the circumstances and to everything that led one or the other into sin. That is why He always looks at how a person thinks and acts. Does he act wickedly? Does he act in ignorance, out of indifference, or out of irreverence?

Thank you.

In matters of prayer, clean hands are needed if Christ is to be overcome by love. A person must know what he is doing; he must know Christ and know God when he prays. Christ gives you the right, at times, to overcome Him. Those who most often do so are the ones who pray with humility and purity of soul, and who also ask for help. They do not say, “Here I am; I will go straight to Christ and tell Him everything.” Instead, they also call upon the Mother of Christ: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us. Saint Nektarios, intercede for us. Saint Demetrios...” They ask for help; they call upon His saints, those of His own household and His friends,

and so they come before Him with even greater support. All together, they overcome Christ by appealing to His love. This is unlike those who say, “I will speak directly to Him.” They say it and demand an answer. They are deceived and led astray, because their egoism will not depart. Whatever boldness we may have before Christ, we must never allow the thought to enter our minds that we can present ourselves directly on our own merits. He gives us the right to approach the throne of grace and mercy, but in humility we should hide behind His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, and behind the saints. You will have noticed how the Orthodox Church conducts herself: she says a few words, then, “Commemorating our most holy, pure Lady...” and so forth; another few words, and again, “Commemorating our most holy, pure Lady...” She does not offer prayer to Christ, or more generally to Heaven,

without placing the Most Holy Theotokos before us as intercessor, for she too stands at the right hand of the Lord. Christ sits at the right hand of the Father, as the Protomartyr Stephen saw Him; and the Most Holy Theotokos stands at the right hand of the Son, as David saw her and as is symbolized at the Prothesis when the priest removes her portion: “The Queen stood at Your right hand, arrayed in a robe of gold, adorned in many colors.” She intercedes for us. Great benefit comes to the person who keeps silence, humbles himself, applies himself to prayer, and prays attentively. It is of the greatest benefit for a person to pray to his God. The commandment is that he should pray day and night: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” Let the whole nous, the spiritual intellect, be turned toward the Lord.

It is in our own hands. I do not know whether we have said even one “Lord have mercy” throughout the day, though we have said so many needless things, so many blasphemous things, and so many harmful things. We did not remember to say even one “Lord have mercy.” The devil does not let us say it. The name torments Satan, and he tries to prevent us. Secular-minded people imagine that they must leave their work, go to the cantor’s stand, reach a skete or a hesychasterion—a hermitage—and sit down there to pray. No! Prayer is for every time and every place. Wherever you are sitting, wherever you may be, when you are about to sleep, when you are preparing to go to work, and even while you are working, you can pray at every time and in every place.

We do not make use of the name of Jesus or of the name of the Theotokos. That is why Satan finds an opportunity to cast countless thoughts into us—thoughts of despair, filthy and carnal thoughts, worldly, egotistical, self-serving, and demonic thoughts—and the person becomes intoxicated by them. By evening Satan has knocked him out of the battle, and the person is overwhelmed because he has offered no resistance, not even a brief invocation. When he sees himself assailed by evil thoughts, he does not say, “My Christ, deliver me! My Most Holy Theotokos, shelter me!” See how quickly your nous, the spiritual intellect, will be freed. By calling out, you make the attack known to the One who can drive back the enemy with all his weapons, so that you can continue onward. People do not know this. A mother teaches her child how to behave.

She teaches the child how to hold a knife and a fork, how to clear away weeds, and how to tend the flowers. But she has not taught the child how to pray. You may ask: how can she teach the child to pray when she herself does not know how? She does not possess the seed of prayer. How, then, can she find it? What can she receive in order to give? If she has never acquired it herself, how can she pass it on? Someone may say, “We have raised a person who can earn his living. May he always have food to eat.” But I consider it a terrible thing to teach someone only how to feed the body and not how to nourish the soul as well, leaving him defenseless. That is what I consider wrong. A mother devotes herself to educating her child so that he will not be unprotected. In this way she arms him, equips him, secures his future, and gives him a weapon with which to go out into the world.

But do you teach the child the finest prayer? Do you teach the child who each Saint is? What do you actually teach? How to walk, not to hate, and to greet people.

The Nativity of the Theotokos, the successor of the Theotokos, the Gospel, the Annunciation, Hesychios the Priest, the Resurrection, the Antichrist—and how to ask in prayer. This is certainly work, an additional task that a person must learn. It is also a spiritual science that will never be exhausted. A thousand years may pass, and you still may not have learned how to pray. It is a work that will always remain unfinished.

This is the work of the angels. The angels alone can attain perfection in prayer. We, being fleshly and paying far more attention to our flesh than to our spirit, will never pray perfectly, no matter how much we struggle. Whatever happens, we must begin with prayer, and then matters will be set right. Things will be different: we will come through with strength, and many times we will escape difficult situations. For a person to pray, two prayers are needed. He needs a prayer for his prayer. When a person stands and begins to pray, he must first ask for the grace of the Holy Spirit to come and stand beside him,

so that he may truly pray. That is why the service begins with “O Heavenly King.” What kind of prayer is “O Heavenly King”? To whom is it addressed? The children imagine that it is addressed... If we pray without the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit, we merely utter empty words: “Protect our grandmother; help us with something tonight; grant success in the examinations. Take care of our grandfather and bring him safely back from his homeland; my father is traveling by airplane now,” and so forth. Nothing about our sins, nothing about the soul, nothing about reality—only empty words. The Ascension, the Gospel of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos.

“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” I will give you those things. What, then, should you ask for? The concerns of your soul, spiritual matters: how to be guarded from sin, how to escape the claws of Satan, how to be delivered from the world and from the devil’s slander. Those are the things you should ask for. I will provide a piece of bread, as much health as you need, and a roof over your head. But what are you doing? You are asking only for spare parts. Imagine going to buy a machine and purchasing the spare parts without buying the machine itself. You would say, “How absurd that is!” You ask for the spare parts but not for the machine. The machine will not be paid for, while the spare parts will cost a great deal. That is how absurd it is. And so I always speak about this short prayer, which is entirely dogmatic and also contains moral teaching.

This prayer precedes all our other prayers. So, with your permission, I would like to use the rest of our time to say a few words about it. What is contained in “O Heavenly King,” which we recite from habit, just as we do the “Our Father” and the Creed? What does it say? Does it say nothing? Is it merely words? How many words a person utters in vain repetition! His nous, the spiritual intellect, does not reach the reality and substance of what is being said, so that his heart may be broken and he may understand. What, then, are we saying when we pray “O Heavenly King”? We confess that the Holy Spirit is not a creature, not a mere breath, and not air, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses claim. He is King—not an earthly king, but a heavenly King: “O Heavenly King.” And because He is King in Heaven, He is God, for human beings do not dwell in Heaven, nor do...

material things dwell there. Created things do not dwell there; the uncreated realities dwell there. The Holy Spirit, then, belongs to God and is God. He is the third person of the Holy Trinity. Those two words contain the whole teaching concerning the divinity of the Holy Spirit. For if the Holy Spirit were not God, He would consequently not be everywhere present. And if it is the Holy Spirit who sustains life, the world, the air, the seas, and all things, then, if He were confined within place and time, there would be life only where the Spirit was present; and where the Spirit was absent, because He was not everywhere present and was not God, there would be death. These two words alone, if we understand them, show that He is God.

You are praying, asking, and addressing the third person of the Holy Trinity: “O Heavenly King, Comforter.” What does “Comforter” mean? The One who consoles us—our Consoler. There are two Comforters: the Holy Spirit and Christ. Christ is also called the Comforter. John writes in his epistle: “My little children...”

Through metanoia—repentance—and confession, He undertakes to cleanse these things, with the intercessions of the Theotokos. There are, then, two Comforters. “O Heavenly King, Comforter.” For Him to be my Comforter and Consoler means that I need Him. I need Him because I fall day and night, and I must have Him beside me to help me. “Comforter, the Spirit of truth.” What does that mean? It is said in contrast to the spirit of wickedness. There is a spirit of wickedness, and there is the Spirit of truth. Do you remember how the Akathist Hymn begins? “The chief commander of the angels was sent from Heaven to say to the Theotokos, ‘Rejoice.’” What does that mean?

He is the chief commander, not the devil who fell away; he was sent from Heaven, not from the earth. It is the same here. If a person pays attention to these contrasts, he will see that there are two opposing states and will understand what he must guard against. Here, then, the prayer says, “the Spirit of truth.” Whoever possesses the grace of the Holy Spirit will walk rightly, speak rightly, think rightly, and formulate doctrine rightly, because it was through the Holy Spirit that the Church defined doctrine at the Ecumenical Councils. The Holy Spirit was present at every Ecumenical Council, among three hundred and more Fathers. “Where two or three are gathered, there am I in the midst of them.” It is not one Pope saying, “I am infallible. I alone.” You are mistaken.

The very claim that you are infallible is itself an error, even before we consider anything else. When three hundred, six hundred, or two hundred and fifty gather together, there is the Holy Spirit. Therefore, wherever the Spirit of truth is, there is the truth. “The Spirit of truth, who is everywhere present.” The Comforter is everywhere present and fills all things. This is the omnipresence I mentioned earlier. But before treating omnipresence in relation to the divine nature, consider your own life. You say, “Let no one find out. Come, no one will see us here.” You break the lamp before going to meet your girlfriend; you speak softly, take precautions, go out into the wilderness or into ravines, or hide in rented rooms far from familiar eyes. Forgive me, but do you not...

Does anyone see you? Your acquaintances and friends may not see you, but the never-sleeping eye of God sees you. He who is present everywhere sees you. And John Chrysostom says that if we were conscious of God’s presence everywhere—if we realized that whatever we do, we do before the eyes of God—then even if the light were out, the windows and doors shut, and every human precaution taken, we would still know that whatever we do is done before God’s eyes. Our elders used to say that if a person knew that his angel and his God were watching him, he would not sin, or would sin very little. If we sin and cause all the harm we do, whether to ourselves...

together with others, or to others, we would not do these things if we had this awareness: ‘At this very moment, my angel and my God are watching me.’ For we Orthodox, from the day of our Baptism, have a guardian angel beside us. Do you ever say your prayers at night, at Compline? Do you read Compline? If you do not know it by heart, you have it in your prayer book: ‘O holy angel of Christ, guardian of my wretched soul and my afflicted life, do not forsake me, a sinner,’ and so forth. You read this to your angel in your evening prayers. The angel wants no sin at all, and especially not the sin between males, the sin against nature, whether it is between a woman and a man or between one man and another.

It is the sin of Sodom, the sin for which God burned Sodom and Gomorrah, a sin He cannot bear to look upon. Only at this sin does Satan turn his face away. With every other sin, whatever it may be, he stands before it and watches it. When eyes are watching you, can you sin? You cannot. I do not know whether I once told here, one evening, an incident from the life of Saint Ephrem the Syrian. This holy man once went down to Alexandria. A courtesan there, one of the most corrupt women of that time, began boasting, ‘I will make him fall into sin.’ So for three or four days she followed the elder and cast seductive glances at him.

Through the Holy Spirit, he knew what kind of woman was following him. Then one evening, toward dusk, as she followed him, he turned and smiled at her for the first time. He said, ‘Forgive me for tiring you out these four days. I know how you feel about me, and whatever you feel and desire from me, I also desire from you. But I cannot do it now. Tomorrow, if you wish, let us arrange to meet here.’ She thought to herself, ‘That is it—we have caught him.’ So they arranged to meet the next day on a main street in Alexandria. They met near the public works and began walking along the main street.

In the central square, Saint Ephrem took off his cassock, threw it onto the grass, and said to her, ‘Come, let us do it here in this square.’ ‘In front of everyone?’ she said. ‘They can see us!’ ‘What?’ he replied. ‘You, a corrupt woman, are saying, “They can see us”? Why, in the place where you imagine no one will see us, are we not also seen there? My God sees me. Wherever I go, I cannot sin. Either here or nowhere.’ And he left. If a person kept this in mind, he would not sin. But he casts aside the thought that God sees him. ‘What did we say just now? It is only between us. No one knows; you said nothing.’

‘Do not tell anyone.’ You see? You entrusted your secret and your evil deed to a cracked pitcher. Thank you.

It would be better for every prosecutor in the world, for everyone known and unknown, to learn of it, if only God did not know. But how could that be? A sentence imposed by men will someday end, but God’s judgment does not end. There was an early Church whose iconography itself taught this lesson. Above the Beautiful Gate, inside the church, an ear, an eye, and a hand were depicted. The people were taught even through what they saw: God’s eye sees everything, even what is hidden; God’s ear hears everything, even what is hidden; and God’s hand records everything, even what is hidden. That is the point. If a person understood this and kept God before him at every moment, asking, ‘How can I do this?’...

he would not sin. And that venerable elder was quite right when he said that a person sins because he has no fear of God: he does not see God before him. If he did, he would either not sin at all or would sin very little. You may say these things are difficult, and yet they can be achieved. At this moment I am thinking of Joseph the All-Comely. His brothers sold him, and that young man went down alone into Egypt and fell into the hands of that corrupt woman, Potiphar’s wife. His mistress wanted him to dishonor himself with her. But the young man did not give in, although he could have said, ‘What does my life matter now, when I am a captive here?’ He might even have returned home boasting that he had been involved with his mistress and had not really lived as a captive. He was effectively the master.

Potiphar had placed the entire household under his management. Joseph had the keys and governed everything. Potiphar knew nothing about what they owned, what they received, what was stored, or what they had sown. Joseph managed it all. This woman attacked him many times. At last he said something very beautiful to her: ‘Everything is under my management. My master knows nothing about it. Everything is in my hands; I direct it all, and it is all entrusted to me—except you. Foolish woman, you do not belong to me; you belong to your husband. I cannot govern you or make use of you as I do all the other things. You belong to him.’ Do not laugh—we do the same thing! You...

may have married him for love, but does that mean you must also have five lovers? Or a man may have married her for love, but does that mean he must also have ten girlfriends? Do we imagine that our body is our own and that we may dispose of it however we please? We will face these things later if we do not repent and turn back from this great transgression. So after Joseph spoke these thoughtful words—‘You are not mine; you belong to your husband. How could you, another man’s wife, be mine?’—he continued: ‘Besides, how could I commit this sin before my God?’ Joseph, did you see God there in Egypt? You came as a captive, sold by your brothers. Would you now turn against God and blame others? Yet even there, Joseph saw God before him: ‘How could I do this before my God?’

We, however, find excuses: ‘The world was to blame; the women were to blame; the men were to blame.’ Is that how it is before God? Does God permit such a thing? Do you have permission from God? You may have the world’s approval, its customs, and its corruption—but do you have permission from your God? You do not. Is God not there? Is God not present everywhere? Joseph said, ‘How can I do this before God?’ I remember another incident, and I will tell it to you. It happened in Athens. A woman had been in love with a man for about ten years. After those ten years, they married. A short time later, they invited one of her husband’s friends to a meal in the home they had established. She had scarcely finished serving him dinner before arranging to meet secretly with her husband’s friend a few days later.

On the afternoon of their appointment, she told her husband, ‘If I am not here when you return from work this evening, I will have gone to the dentist. My tooth hurts.’ How could he imagine what she intended after those ten years together? That afternoon she got ready. She looked at herself from the front and the back, full face and profile, making sure that everything was just right. Proud of her appearance, she set out. High on the wall was the case containing their wedding crowns. She had placed the crowns up high so that they would not gather dust. Beside them was a small colored icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. She went to take one last look in the mirror and began walking out. As she passed by...

the case containing the wedding crowns fell behind her and shattered into a million pieces with such a terrible crash that she was struck speechless. She turned to look and said, ‘Most Holy Theotokos, indeed!’ Then the Most Holy Theotokos called gently to her from above and said, ‘Why do you need these hanging here? Where you are going, take them first and carry them with you.’ He who is present everywhere sees from above even the things we do in secret, the things we do behind people’s backs so that no one will hear or learn of them. If, when saying this short prayer, a person understood even these words alone—‘who art everywhere present and fillest all things’—we would have prevented thousands of sins. I do not know whether you ever...

go first of all to Holy Confession, or whether you simply say these things before an icon and think that is enough. If you confess to a priest, how do you feel when you are about to commit the same sin you have already confessed? As you are about to sin, you say, ‘How will I go and tell this priest the same thing again?’ The thought that you will have to confess it again, together with your shame, restrains you. If a person reflected that God sees him and that his sins are committed before God, he would not sin. This is what the prayer says of the Holy Spirit: ‘everywhere present.’ You call Him ‘Heavenly,’ but that does not mean He is far away and unconcerned with what I do. He is everywhere present and fills all things. ‘The Treasury of good things.’ Every spiritual good flows from the Holy Spirit.

From the Holy Spirit come health, illumination, the preservation of life, and the sustaining of all nature. The Holy Spirit sustains everything, working in countless ways. It is one and the same Spirit, yet there are innumerable gifts, given according to the needs of human beings and of the rest of creation. He is ‘the Treasury of good things and Giver of life.’ Life is not made by the winds, by apes, by sparrows, or by anyone else; it is given by the Holy Spirit. He has established the particular law by which a woman’s ovum joins with a man’s sperm and life begins. That life comes through the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings it into being. Thank you.

Even if you abort it at the very moment it is conceived—without crushing it or casting it away—it is already a being, a life, and it exists unto eternity, whether its destiny is dark or bright. On that Day, the men and women who have killed children through abortion and the like will find those children hanging about their own necks, unless they confess and repent. They will appear embodied, like so many from this world. ‘And Giver of life. Come, I beseech Thee, and dwell in us.’ Not, ‘Come and pass through for a moment, then leave us in peace to do everything else.’ ‘Dwell in us’ means: pitch Thy tent within us and remain there. Do you know what David says in the thirty-fourth Psalm? ‘The angel of the Lord encamps round about those who fear Him.’

The Christian has angels all around him. Besides his own guardian angel, when there is need, other angels come around his home, his workplace, and along his journey, and they protect him. Have you not sometimes heard of a collision or accident in which two people who should have been lost, who should have died, were miraculously saved, and people say, ‘He had an angel’? Some say a saint protected him; others, that he had an angel. ‘The angel of the Lord encamps round about those who fear Him.’ If you understand the prayer, what are you asking? You are asking the Holy Spirit to come and dwell within you. It is like a lamp being placed inside, remaining there and giving light. Then, when Satan wants darkness within a person so that he can do his work, he cannot make it dark. You do the works of Satan in darkness. And if the veil of night could only be lifted...

you would see what takes place among human beings. ‘Come, then, and dwell in us, and cleanse us.’ Do we not ask Him to come and work upon us, cleansing us? He must pass over us, work upon us, and purify us. From what? ‘From every stain.’ Every stain, both great and small. Wash us as though with a bucket of water, cleansing us from every stain. Imagine a bride—for the human soul is a bride—wearing her veil, but with a great blot of dirt reaching down to her waist. What kind of sight would that be? That is what you are like when you have one unconfessed sin, or two, or five, even if we suppose there are no more. Perhaps a broom was dipped in filth and brushed against her as she passed. We have ten, fifty, a hundred, two hundred little smears.

What sort of bridal appearance is that? What kind of sight are you? These are stains made through the eye, the hand, the ear, taste, smell, and the tongue—stains upon the garment of the soul. A person must be cleansed from every stain. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. ‘And save our souls, O Good One.’ It is a short prayer of only a few words, yet what depth it contains! It tells us to whom we pray, whom we glorify, and whom we invoke, and it contains so many teachings. Yet each person recites it without putting any of it into practice. I believe these things will be useful to you, and that is why I have said a few words about prayer. I shall stop here now, and, God willing, tomorrow evening we shall see what He grants us to speak about.

Ο Θεός είναι παντοδύναμος. Όταν βλέπει τον άνθρωπο με παιδιάτικη ψυχή, ο Θεός τού γλιστράει το σπαθί της δικαιοσύνης από τα χέρια Του, μεταμελείται, αλλάζει, και ο άνθρωπος βρίσκει το τελείως αντίθετο από εκείνο: που άρχισε να τιμωρηθεί, δεν τιμωρείται, διότι μετανοεί, διότι ταπεινώνεται, διότι Του λέει δυο λόγια από την καρδιά του: «Έφταιξα, ναι, αλλάζω τη γνώμη μου, διότι θέλω να αλλάξω ζωή». Τον ενίκησες τον Θεό. Επισφραγίζεται επίσης με το μυστήριο που έχει τη μετάνοια, την εξομολόγηση. Έχεις τη σφραγίδα πλέον στο χέρι σου ότι ο Θεός σε συγχώρησε και τα πράγματα αλλάζουν στη ζωή σου και ανοίγεις μια νέα σελίδα. Και πώς να μην τη λαχταρήσεις;

Καλόν έργο, όπως και το κακόν έργο. Γιατί το κάνεις; Γιατί αμαρτάνεις; Πώς ξεκίνησε; Πώς σου επεβλήθη; Εσύ επεδίωξες; Άλλος σε παρέσυρε; Φταίει η μητέρα σου; Φταίει ο παπάς σου; Φταίει ο δάσκαλος; Πώς φταίει; Θα εξετάσει όλα αυτά ο Χριστός. Δεν θα πιάνει τον κανόνα να φεύγουν κεφάλια. Παίρνω έναν, παίρνω κι άλλον· ένας θα δικαστεί δέκα μέρες φυλακή κι άλλος θα δικαστεί εκατό χρόνια φυλακής, κατ' αναλογίαν της περιστάσεως, κατ' αναλογίαν των περιστατικών που έμαθε αυτός και έκαμε την αμαρτία ή ο άλλος. Γι' αυτό πάντοτε κοιτάζει τον άνθρωπο πώς σκέφτεται και ενεργεί. Ενεργεί πονηρά; Ενεργεί εν αγνοία; Ενεργεί από αδιαφορία; Ενεργεί από ασέβεια;

Επιτρέψουν, διά μετανοίας και εξομολογήσεως, της Θεοτόκου που θα έχει πει, να αναλάβει να καθαρίσει αυτά τα πράγματα. Είναι δύο λοιπόν οι Παράκλητοι. «Βασιλεύ Ουράνιε, Παράκλητε». Για να είναι Παράκλητος, Παρηγορητής μου, είναι ανάγκη, τον έχω ανάγκη, διότι μέρα νύχτα πέφτω και πρέπει να τον έχω να με βοηθάει. Παράκλητε, το Πνεύμα της αληθείας. Τι είναι αυτό πάλι; Εν αντιθέσει και εν αντιδιαστολή του πνεύματος της πονηρίας. Υπάρχει και πνεύμα πονηρίας και πνεύμα αληθείας. Θυμόσαστε πώς αρχίζει ο Ακάθιστος Ύμνος; «Άγγελος πρωτοστάτης ουρανόθεν επέμφθη ειπείν τη Θεοτόκω το Χαίρε». Τι πάει να πει αυτό;

Προτιμότερο να το μάθουν όλοι οι εισαγγελείς του κόσμου, όλος ο κόσμος, το γνωστό, το άγνωστο, και να μην το μάθει ο Θεός. Πώς θα υποφέρεις; Άγγελοι, όταν σε δικάσουν, ότι κάποτε θα τελειώσει, αλλά του Θεού δεν τελειώνει. Πρώτη εκκλησία, την οποία δίδασκε και με την αγιογραφία της. Εκεί, μέσα στην ωραία πύλη, από πάνω, ιστορούσε ένα αυτί, ένα μάτι και ένα χέρι. Και δίδασκε το λαό και με τα μάτια ότι τα πάντα τα βλέπει ο Θεός, και τα κρυφά, τα πάντα ακούει το αυτί του Θεού, και τα κρυφά, και τα πάντα γράφει το χέρι του Θεού, και τα κρυφά. Αυτό. Αν λοιπόν ο άνθρωπος ήθελε να το καταλάβει αυτό και να βλέπει μπροστά του τον Θεό ανά πάσα στιγμή, πώς θα το κάνω αυτό;
