Summary
Obstacles, slander, jealousy, and injustice do not prevent Christian sanctification but reveal whether believers possess patience, forbearance, and love. When another person sins against them, Christians should offer correction for that person's good while renouncing judgment, revenge, and resentment. The faith required for this life rests in Christ, who answers prayer according to what truly benefits each person and transforms suffering, the Cross, and even human malice into occasions of salvation.

You have often heard it said that people are forced to sin because many of their fellow human beings put obstacles in their way—in their lives, in their work, and generally in their efforts to prosper. There is even a popular saying: “You want to become holy, but they will not let you.” This is wrong. Our Christ does not agree with this way of thinking, nor does the Gospel. We must also understand that what are called scandals—the stumbling blocks sometimes placed in our way—do not prevent our sanctification.
They help us become better, because without obstacles a person cannot be a Christian. The Christian is revealed amid these obstacles and scandals, amid the accusations, jealousy, and envy that come from other people. What matters is how he conducts himself in such circumstances: whether he will show forbearance, whether he will endure, and whether he will love even the person who harms him, slanders him, or creates obstacles in his work, and so forth. That is where his true worth will be revealed. These things are not human inventions; they have been written by God. Within the Gospel there are instructions for how a person ought to think,
and what attitude he should have toward these so-called scandals. If you, as Christians, open the seventeenth chapter of Luke, for example, you will find the following: “And He said to His disciples, ‘It is impossible that scandals should not come.’” It is impossible, He says, for scandals not to enter a person’s life. “But woe to him through whom the scandal comes.”
Does that mean, “Woe to you when someone causes you to stumble”? No. Woe to the person who causes the scandal. Very often our tongue is the cause of scandal. We do not guard our tongue or consider what we should and should not say. We are often quick to speak, and we cause harm without realizing it. Then we cannot undo what a word of ours has done. So He tells them that scandals cannot but come. As we might say today, illnesses cannot but come; yet we are vaccinated against diseases and epidemics, and thus we face them without fear. Very often, a person is scandalized because he is spiritually unarmed. It is like what people say about being affected by sorcery or the evil eye. Why does it affect him? Because he is unarmed. He does not have Christ upon him. He does not live a life in the Mysteries. That is precisely why he is exposed.
It will come upon him first. Perhaps I could illustrate this with a weak constitution, a sickly child. Whatever illness comes along, however slight it may be, will pass through a weakened body because its red blood cells do not react; consequently, it falls victim to all these conditions. And we see people saying, “Ah, you can endure it, but I cannot endure such a thing.” But why can you not? What am I—a mighty man? In spiritual matters we could all be equally strong, provided, of course, that we struggle equally. If I had to lift a weight, you might certainly be able to lift more than I could because your build, your strength, and your other natural abilities are different. But in spiritual matters we could all be equal.
Could we not all be equally strong and able to endure temptations, scandals, injustices, slanders, and so many other things in the world that make our daily lives sorrowful? We could face all these things. But we do not struggle as much as we should, pray as much as we should, or receive Holy Communion as often as we should. In other words, we do not remain in communion with Christ so that we may be strong in all these circumstances. Christ therefore clearly told His disciples—and, by extension, us—that it is impossible for scandals not to come. “But woe to him through whom the scandal comes.” And you know, many times we ourselves may unwittingly have caused a scandal without realizing it,
because we were not careful. Through a word, a joke, our manner, our clothing, or some careless behavior, we may become the cause of a scandal. A pendant, as it were, may already be hanging around our neck without our even knowing that we have caused someone to stumble. A soul has been scandalized; a soul has sinned or continues to sin. And you know, these are among those terrible things whose consequences follow us beyond the grave, because, as you know, a person’s case does not end at the grave. The record remains open for both the believer and the unbeliever, and entries continue to be added accordingly to each one’s account.
The balance may be negative or positive, a debit or a credit. The matter will be settled at the Second Coming. Then the records will be closed once and for all. A person here, through a word, a written work, or a story, may have caused another person’s ruin. The one who heard it then told someone else, that person told another, and the next told another. You know how easily sin spreads, how readily the art of sin is passed on. All this fruit of evil will come to hang around our own neck. And these are things, I tell you, whose consequences we often cannot prevent and which we do not even remember to confess. I remember once visiting the provinces to speak, and I had a spiritual father with me. That evening, while we were in the village, I said to him:
“Tell me, Geronta, what local sin do you encounter here in confession? Theft, blasphemy, unforgiveness, or what?” “None of those,” he told me. “Those are nothing. The great evil here in these villages is the avoidance of having children. You cannot hear a single child crying anywhere.” “How did this fashion reach this place?” I asked. “A woman from the village came here from Athens last year to spend the summer,” he said. “She taught one woman the method of avoiding children, and now, throughout all five villages around here, not one child can be heard crying in a cradle.” One woman recounted what she had done; the others learned from her and began doing it themselves. All those pendants now hang around the neck of that woman who started it.
And the other women who pass on the evil will also receive their share of guilt. I doubt that they ever confessed this. They may have confessed what they themselves did and said, “I avoid having children,” but did they also say, “I have taught this method to other women”? You can now understand how serious the matter is. Here He says, “Woe to him through whom the scandal comes.” Do you know what scandal means? A skandalon is a trap. People set a trap to catch someone. They set a trap to catch a fox, placing bait upon it—a piece of meat—so that the fox will come to eat it and be caught. This is what is called a scandal, a stumbling block. It hinders a person, captures him for evil, and holds him fast in evil. We may have fallen into this many times, knowingly or unknowingly. Woe to us if we have become the cause of a scandal.
Woe to us if our clothing has become a cause of scandal. Read a certain detail in the Old Testament. It speaks of a woman—for there, both then and even to this day, women do not uncover themselves but are clothed from head to heel. One woman’s ankle was exposed; her heel could be seen—not the nakedness seen today, but merely her heel—and what happened? A man named Holofernes was scandalized, and this was recorded against her. Consider, then, what happens among us: what happens in our homes, what happens when we step onto our balconies, what happens as we pass by in cars wearing transparent clothing—consider what happens. You see, all these scandals accumulate and hang around a person’s neck. “Woe to him,” He says, “through whom it comes.” Another kind of scandal occurs within the home: a mother-in-law poisons her son’s mind with words; a daughter-in-law speaks against her mother-in-law;
a son speaks against his father. Woe to the person who creates a scandal. And I want you to understand this: scandal is not caused only by slander, lies, jealousy, or envy. You can cause scandal even by telling the truth—yes, even by telling the truth. You see something that has happened. If you carry the story and tell it to the son, the daughter-in-law, the mother-in-law, or the father, conflict will arise in the home; Christ or the Most Holy Theotokos may be blasphemed, or other obstacles may be created within the household. You may be telling the truth, but you are still guilty. You are guilty. Whatever comes of it, you will be guilty. This pendant will hang upon you, and God’s justice will require an account from you. “But I told the truth.” If you had told lies, you would also have been a slanderer.
You are acting deceitfully, sowing scandals where you should be removing them whenever possible and bringing peace between people whenever possible, rather than setting them against one another in malice and bitterness. Scandals cannot but arise, He says, but woe to the person through whom they come. And do you know what warning He gives? Listen, if you have not read it: “It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should scandalize one of these little ones.” It would be better for him, He says, to tie a millstone around his neck and plunge into the sea right now,
than to scandalize one who is weak.
Because... because the strong are not scandalized; the weak are. People criticize the clergy today. Why should I be scandalized? Will they drive me out of the Church? No matter what they tell me about the clergy, they will not drive me out of the Church. Even if it is true and I see it with my own eyes, I will not be scandalized. By God’s help, I am strong. But someone else will be scandalized—the weak person who is looking for an excuse not to attend Church, not to go to confession, or not to receive Holy Communion. I approach such a person and say, “Do you not know what happened? Have you not heard? Have you not read?” and so forth. When you become a stumbling block in this sense, woe to you on the Day of Judgment. It would be better, He says, to tie a millstone around your neck right now and plunge into the sea,
than to scandalize one of these little ones, one of the weak; for, I repeat, the strong are not scandalized. “Take heed to yourselves.” Watch yourselves, He says. And I dare say that our own self is the one thing we do not watch. We do not care for ourselves inwardly or spiritually. We take care not to get dirty or cut ourselves, and if we are cut, we immediately go and get a tetanus shot. We attend to these things, but they do not save us. They concern this world and our physical life, not our spiritual life. Spiritually, we do not watch over ourselves as carefully as we should. Our inner self is defiled and wounded; it is not as strong as it should be, so that we may also bear with the weaknesses of others.
A person was not made only for himself; he was also made for others. “Comfort the fainthearted,” Scripture says. Go near them, show mercy, pray for one another. Consequently, you have work to do. It is not simply a matter of your own shell or mine; you also have work to do beyond yourself. The Christian has an outward ministry as well. And Christ expects a person to offer himself—to become a bridge, to bring people together and reconcile them, to make even his wallet a bridge, and to offer his knowledge. This is what He expects from a person. Take heed, then, He says; take heed.
We easily shift the responsibility because we are descendants of Adam and Eve, who also shifted the blame. “Not I,” one says, “but the serpent.” “Not I, but Eve.” Both of them innocent as doves! So, by that reasoning, God is to blame because He made both Eve and the serpent. But that is not how things are. If, then, someone should sin: “If your brother sins against you, rebuke him.” When we say “rebuke him,” it means remind and correct him. Tell him, “Brother, what you are doing is not right. I endure it. I am obliged to endure it. I am obliged to bear with you—to bear the burden of your tongue, the burden of your malice, the burden of your envy and your slander. Yes, but you...”
“Take heed. You will have to give an account. You are doing me good, because it is the wicked who will help make us holy. Evil tongues will help make us holy; evil hands and acts of robbery will help make us holy. That is how it is. These things are not truly evil; they are only regarded as evil. There is only one true evil: sin. The other things do not harm us, provided we do not commit them ourselves. If others do them, then...”
So we will certainly not invite others to do these things to us. But if they do them, we must not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by them, assume the place of a judge or an avenger, or seek revenge. No. We will speak to that person clearly and reasonably, saying, “What you are doing is not good for you; it is not in your own interest to act this way.” And if he repents...
“Forgive him.” Someone may ask, “And what if he does not repent?” That is his concern. As far as you are concerned, he must always be forgiven. But if he says to you, “Yes, I was at fault; forgive me,” then you should also tell him plainly, so that he knows: “Very well, I do not hold it against you.” He needs to know this, because Satan will go and whisper to him: “Did he really forgive you? You asked forgiveness, but perhaps he still holds it inside and is seething.” Then you are obliged to express your forgiveness openly. This does not mean that, if he had not asked forgiveness or repented, you would not have forgiven him. No. But you should tell him in words:
“You are forgiven. I do not hold this against you.” This is a very subtle way of acting, yet many so-called Christians do not follow it. Many people not only refuse to forgive, but even when others ask their forgiveness, they often will not grant it. They demand satisfaction; they seek revenge; they want to humiliate and crush the other person. Brother, what would become of you if Christ treated you that way? You too ask God’s forgiveness throughout your life, and we have asked forgiveness many times. If God thought as we do, what would become of us? “Who could stand?” How does the Psalm say it? “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” If You were to take pencil and paper, that is, and write down for me...
all the sins I have committed against You, my God, who could ever reach the end of the account? Yet sometimes we forget these things. Some people remain on bad terms with others for many years, set all this aside, and say, “But I go and receive Holy Communion.” How can you go and receive Holy Communion when the Peacemaker asks for peace—the great Peacemaker, who made peace between humanity and God through His own blood? What have you paid? Your pride was wounded, or someone took your plot of land, and now you will neither speak to him nor have anything to do with him. How do you understand this? These details may not concern us personally at this moment, but they will concern others. They are also principles a person can use to help other people
who come to him and belong to his circle. We often know of such situations, or people ask us about their troubles: “This and that is happening to me; what should I do?” The nous—the Christian’s spiritual intellect—must be illumined, truly enlightened, and give the appropriate answers. In this way, it frees a person from the place where Satan has entangled him. Satan has his own net, like a dogcatcher, and he traps the person in it. Once he has caught the person in the net and lifted him up, as a dogcatcher lifts a dog, the person becomes utterly confused. He can no longer think rationally and does not know what he is doing. That is precisely what happens in this case. And so the reasonable question arises:
What will become of someone who is always wronging me, always troubling me, always causing me to stumble, while I continually forgive him? The Apostle Peter once asked Christ this very question. At that time there was a mistaken, merely human notion which said that you were obliged to forgive your brother three times in one day for the same or a similar offense. After that, you could take a knife and gut him. Prompted by the teaching of Christ, who always spoke about forgiveness, even the forgiveness of enemies,
Peter once asked Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” The rule had said three, but Peter was being generous and made it seven. Christ answered him, “Seventy times seven”—forever, continually. There is no point at which you say, “Is that not too much, Lord?” Some say, “Come now, even God gets tired of it—once, twice, three times, and then woe to you.” That is wrong. The Lord continues: “If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.” If he says this—yet even if he does not repent, you must still not condemn him within yourself. His saying “I repent” releases him from the burden. You, however, must always remain free of it. You must be unbound.
You must not take the offense to heart and seek revenge or his punishment. That is not Christian. There are only certain cases in which you may keep someone at a distance, when you understand that renewing the relationship could recreate the former situation, or something worse. Even then, you can still offer him God’s greeting of peace. Your manner and conduct should show no malice over what he did to you. At the same time, you keep him at a distance, as you would keep away from a chained dog that might bite you again. So what do we do? We keep our distance. We exchange a greeting, but you remain in your home; we exchange a greeting, but you go about your own work. I have nothing against you, but we cannot keep company together.
Clearly, you are still weak. We do not say this aloud, but this is what we mean: otherwise, the same things will happen again. There is one further case in which contact is not permitted, based not primarily on Holy Scripture but on the Fathers. The first case I mentioned is scriptural. It is what the Apostle Paul says: “Give no occasion to those who seek an occasion.” Do not make it easy for him to fall into sin again and for you to become embittered again; give no occasion. The second case, taught by the Fathers, concerns unlawful sexual relations. Then that relationship must be completely severed, and you must behave as enemies, at least outwardly. You should not even exchange a greeting with that person. There must be no coming and going at the house, in the neighborhood, at the office,
or anywhere else the person connected with the sin may be. Satan will exploit such contact and recreate the same situation, perhaps worse than before. This is the one case in which you have the right—or rather, the obligation—not even to offer God’s greeting of peace. In every other case, you should preserve relations, though with many people those relations must be kept within limits, so that you do not fall into the same sin or become embittered again, because that person is not yet strong. We might say that he has not yet recovered. That is the situation here. So if he sins against you seven times a day—seven times seven,
or seventy-seven, as it is put in the other saying I mentioned, when Peter questioned Him—you must forgive continually, forever, always. You see, it is not by chance that someone troubles you, insults you, or causes you to stumble. It is not accidental. You are being called to undergo a test. Do not say, “Everything happens to me.” Why? Are you so holy that these things should not happen to you? And who told you that they merely happened by chance? Could this not be an opportunity to settle earlier debts, to be humbled, and to reflect on so many things? You may turn inward and say, “My God, how can I ask Your forgiveness for my many sins,
and for the countless times I come before You asking forgiveness, if I cannot forgive these fellow human beings?” Then a person is humbled and benefited. I do not wish us to benefit from another person’s fall, but God can take even that and bring good from it. We must give no occasion for it; but if it comes upon us once, twice, three times, five times, ten times, a hundred times, or a thousand times, we must stand firm as rocks and bear no resentment. We must pray for these people and speak the best words about them. And what must we await? Not merely the end of our own temptations, but the restoration of the one who has fallen, so that he may stand upright. That is what we must await. This is the good that comes from these temptations. For Christ is the One who brought life out of death,
salvation out of the Cross, and mercy out of malice. These things did not spring from roses. They came out of the filthiest deeds, the most shameless acts. And these acts were not merely committed by one human being against another, but against God. You understand how serious this matter is. That is why I tell you to pay attention to it, because it happens to all of us—in every home and among all people. Take a thousand people; you may find five or ten who do not have such troubles. All the rest have problems: with family, with neighbors, between husband and wife, farther afield, at work, in the office, in the factory—wherever you look, such things exist.
A person must know how to walk through life. Gain something from everything; lose nothing. Be benefited by everything, and let nothing go to waste. But this depends on whether the person himself desires it. Let us pay attention to this. Following these thoughts about how a person ought to conduct himself, which we have discussed up to this point, we now come to another conversation between the Apostles and the Lord. It arose from the preceding teaching and words of Christ. The Apostles saw that these things were difficult and not easy for them to do. For all this to become possible, faith was needed. It is true that faith is the starting point.
But the question is: in whom will you believe, and from whom will you expect help? If I believe in and expect help from some human being, some person, or I know not what, from which no power can come, I accomplish nothing. I am building upon emptiness. I am waiting upon something that cannot help me. The point is for a person to place his faith rightly, both in the Person and in His power. We expect everything from Christ. Whatever we ask in the name of Christ, through the intercessions of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, and of all His Saints, we must believe that He will grant it to us, provided it is for our benefit. He does not grant everything,
not because He is unable, but because, at least for the present, it would not benefit us. Because He loves us and desires our good, He often does not grant what we ask.
For example, a child asks his mother for scissors, then throws himself on the floor, kicking and screaming. But his mother will not give them to him. She hides them and locks them away. Why? Does she not love her child? Of course she does. It is precisely because she loves him that she refuses. Otherwise, before long she would have to take him to the emergency room: he might cut himself, put out his eyes, or tear open his belly. So she does not give him the scissors. Many of the things we ask for—business ventures, achievements, marriages, or other dreams and illusions of our own—would not benefit us. And although we cry out and beat our breasts, we receive no answer.
The other day, while I was speaking from the lectern, I found a note below, evidently written by a young woman. It said, “Mr. Panagopoulos, why does God not hear me?” And what was her request? “For so many years I have prayed that He would give me a Christian man for a husband, but He has not given me one to this day. Is this because of my faith? I do believe.” So why has God not given him to her? Perhaps He has ordered him, and he is not ready yet! And who told you that this so-called Christian man would give you a Christian life? Who told you that you, a Christian woman, must marry a Christian, rather than marry someone else and draw him into the Christian life? Who told you that two good qualities will unite and produce a third good thing?
Might not the bad qualities unite instead and destroy them both? Who told you otherwise? Is there a Christian man made exactly to your measure, whom you simply must marry? And are you certain you can raise the children you have as Christians? How many Christian men have raised children who became devils! And if God is protecting you through this delay, why are you angry with Him? Why do you not trust Him? In the Our Father you say, “Thy will be done,” but you do not believe it. What you mean is, “My will be done—the thing I am telling You and writing down for You. You have the power to do it for me.” But He says, “I am not doing it because it would not benefit you, at least for now.” Did Zacharias and Elizabeth not ask for a child when they were young, when Elizabeth could still bear children and they could hold and nurture a child in their arms? They did ask. God did not grant it to them then.
Then, fifty years later, when Elizabeth was about ninety and was ashamed to go outside and reveal that she had shared her husband’s bed at such an age, God granted her Saint John the Forerunner. He made her the greatest among women. Is that not so? Had He granted her request earlier, He would simply have given her a child. But now He gave her the child. Did He harm her? Looking back, she would be ashamed before heaven for having murmured against God, since the delay was for her benefit. That is why the divine John Chrysostom says: “When you ask God for something and He grants it, offer Him one great thanksgiving. But if you ask and He does not grant it, offer Him a thousand thanksgivings, because He has protected you from something you cannot yet see, something that would later have made you tear your hair out.”
These things are true, my beloved. Faith is needed—but what kind of faith? Faith that enables us to get something from Him? No, not that kind. True faith is knowing that He knows what is best and will do what benefits me. It is not a matter of having enough faith to contain a miracle, as though my faith were a vessel. The miracle itself may not benefit me. I ask Him to make me well, but if He heals me, I may be ruined. Perhaps He should not heal me; my illness compels me to pray, to restrain myself, and to do many other things. Does that mean I do not believe? How could I not believe, when I have experienced so many miracles in my own life and read every day of so many miracles throughout the world? But that is not what I believe. I believe that, if it is for my benefit, He will grant it to me. That is how I ask. And if He grants it, I will thank Him and glorify Him every day. Yet even then I will begin to fear and say, “Lord, do not let this become the cause of some other harm.”
“Lord, do not let this become the cause of some other harm.” That, then, is what faith means: I believe in One who can give it to me, and that He will give it to me if it is for my benefit. Faith has all these dimensions. Believing, then, is not a simple matter; one kind of faith differs from another. Satan believes, but not as we believe. “The demons believe—and tremble,” says James, the Brother of the Lord, whose feast we celebrated the other day, in his Epistle. So the Apostles understood that accomplishing all this was a matter of faith. For if you do not believe in Christ, and Christ does not give you the strength, you cannot love your enemy, my dear. These things are not natural; they are supernatural. They do not come naturally to us. Our natural response is: “You have done me one wrong; I will do you forty wrongs.”
“You harmed me; I will pin you to the wall,” as the saying goes. “I will put you in your place”—regardless of whether I myself step outside my proper place. “I have my dignity.” Yes, but you also have the dignity proper to a Christian. Which of the two will you preserve: worldly dignity or Christian dignity? If you preserve your Christian dignity, then worldly dignity must be set aside. The Apostles therefore realized that faith was needed if all these things spoken by the Lord were to be done. So they turned to the Lord and said, “Increase our faith; increase our faith.” And the Lord answered them:
“If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”
What are they asking Him for?
First of all, they ask Him to give them faith—to add to what they already have. So they believed they had faith, but Christ revealed that they did not have even a mustard seed’s worth of faith—no faith at all. We say that we believe, do we not? Of course. But where is faith proved? In our deeds. If we do not act, we do not believe. Our faith is like that of the demons, because faith is proved by works; works are the seal placed upon faith. “Show me,” says the Brother of the Lord, “your faith by your works.” If I do not act, then how can I say I believe? Does having icons in my house mean that I believe? Then why do I not fast? Why, if I am a woman, have I made myself into a man?
Why, if God made my children girls, do I present them as boys? Why, if I believe in Almighty God, do I not accept as many children as God gives me? Why, if I believe in God, do I not ask God for my wife—or, if I am a woman, for my husband—instead of choosing one entirely by myself? Why do I steal? Why do I lie? Why do I conduct myself in such a base manner in the world? How much do I truly believe in God, trust in Him, and await my recompense from Him? My deeds prove that I do not believe. The Apostles too imagined that they believed, and He told them, “You do not have faith even the size of a mustard seed.” If you had even that tiny amount of faith, you could tell this mulberry tree—a tree somewhat between a fig tree and a mulberry tree—
a kind of hybrid tree—to go into the sea, and it would rise up and go into the sea. Sometimes people hear such things and say, “Such supernatural things?” I urge you to read the life of the saint.
What was the Athenian saint’s name? The Athenian—Saint Mark the Athenian. Read his life. There you will learn how, when he was ninety-six years old and about to die, God sent a hermit named Serapion into the desert to bury him. After more than seventy years without seeing another human being, Saint Mark saw a man. He questioned him: “Geronta, brother, are there still people on earth who have faith?” First he asked whether there were still people, and Serapion replied, “There are, through your prayers.” “Is there faith on earth?” “There is, through your prayers.” “I do not mean just any faith,” he said. “I mean the faith of which the Lord spoke—”
“the faith that can say to this mountain, ‘Go into the sea,’ and it goes. Does such faith exist?” As he raised his hand and pointed to the mountain opposite them, he saw the mountain begin moving toward the sea. So he said to it, “We are having a conversation here; no one said anything to you. Stay where you are. Stop.” And the mountain stopped. Who among us would believe such supernatural things? We do not believe them even in theory, much less in practice. The Protestants tell us, “I am right to remove the icons from the house.” Yet even though we have them, what do we do with them? How little we believe in the saints! How clearly our deeds show that we do not believe in them! We have Saint Nicholas in our home, while beneath his icon, on Wednesdays and Fridays, we cook steaks,
eggs, butter, milk, and so on, and then we ask Saint Nicholas to help us. Why should he? It is as though he were saying, “When I was an infant, I fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays and turned away from my mother’s breast, refusing even milk, and now you trample my way of life underfoot. Yet because your name is Nicholas, and tomorrow is your feast day, you expect me to help you? You disregard my entire life—where is your faith?” Do you understand? And there are countless other examples; I have mentioned only this one. Our faith is not shown by saying, “I believe that God is three hypostases, that the Most Holy Theotokos is Ever-Virgin, and that there is life beyond the grave.” Very well, my good man. Now show us your life. Come, let us look at how you live according to what you believe, so that your life may confirm your faith. It would be shameful if the wardrobes in our homes were opened and their contents revealed.
It would be shameful if our refrigerator were opened and its contents revealed. It would be shameful if our money box or bank account were opened. If everyone were told to take back what belonged to them, we would be left with nothing but bare floorboards. On what grounds, then, do we say that we believe? That is why the Lord’s words are so striking: “If you had even this tiny amount of faith, you could tell this mountain—or this mulberry tree, for example—to go into the sea, and it would obey you.” And yet, I repeat, we do not have it. Now we imagine that if we do even one good deed, or some little thing, God owes us something. We often hear someone say, “I fast on Friday.” “Why do you fast on Friday?” “I fast for Saint Paraskeva,” she says. So that is why you fast? Does Friday need you to fast on Friday? If you want to fast for the saint, why not fast on Thursday? Why not Tuesday? Why not Monday?
On Friday you are already obliged to fast; you are merely doing what is required. “But fasting on Friday is good for the eyes; Saint Paraskeva protects the eyes,” she says. Yes, Saint Paraskeva is invoked for ailments of the eyes. But Friday is already a fast day in itself. And if you wish to fast, then fast, by all means. Yet because you fast, is Saint Paraskeva obliged to preserve your eyesight? We do nothing without expecting something in return. If we give something, we expect to find it waiting for us in Heaven; and if we were not going to find it in Heaven, we would not have given it. If we had no guarantee of receiving it back, would we give? Whenever we do something, we want to believe that we will be paid for it. This attitude must leave the Christian. A Christian acts without calculating or keeping account of anything: “I give this to you because you need it today, my brother.”
“I give it to you, and you need never give it back. I give it because I believe that if tomorrow I have nothing, someone else will come and give to me. I am not lending it to you; I am giving it to you. Take it. And if no one ever gives anything to me, Glory to God. Still, I give it to you.” Let us not demand repayment from God, even though, in His love and wisdom, He abandons no one. He provides for all of us, even for the wicked. In His own way He watches over them, shelters them, provides for them, and protects them even when they do not deserve protection. He does all this of His own accord—entirely of His own accord. There is a passage here that says the following.
Continuing this thought, the Lord says: “Which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep”—a servant whom he has sent to plow his field or tend his flock—“will say to him when he comes in from the field,” when that servant returns tired in the evening, “Come at once and sit down to eat”? “You are tired today; go and lie down.” No one says that to a servant. What does he say instead? “Come and prepare the table until I have eaten. Set the table for me.” “Gird yourself,” he says, “and serve me until I have eaten and drunk; afterward you may eat and drink.”
So the servant sets the table, his master eats, and afterward the servant clears the table, and so on. He is a servant; he receives no extra pay—no overtime, as some call it. He is a servant. He will work in the field and then serve his master in the house. Will the master thank him for this? No, because he is a servant and owes this service in return for what he receives. We too have obligations toward our Creator, and fulfilling them is for our own benefit. God needs nothing. Let no one ever say that he is doing God a favor. Let no one ever imagine that he is benefiting God. Whatever we do, we do for our own benefit, and divine grace returns the blessing to us.
Through our good deeds we open a road, a window, through which God’s mercy may enter us. We do not say, “I am doing this so that I may receive that.” No; I do it because it is what I ought to do. The Lord then gives this example: “So likewise you, when you have done all that was commanded you”—all that was commanded, all of it; we must do everything, not merely some things, though we do only some—“when you have done all that was commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what it was our duty to do.’” We owed this service. We do not perform it so that He will reward us. And notice that He says, “when you have done everything commanded.” We do not do everything that has been commanded.
We may do some things. We may do more than others, or perhaps do something that others do not do at all. Yes, but we still do not do everything. When a person does not keep the whole law, he may become like David, who failed to guard himself against adultery, which then led him to murder. Or he may become like Judas, who failed to guard himself against theft. He pulled one stake out of the fence of God’s law. “Do not steal; do not commit adultery; do not do this or that.” He did not keep them all; he did not watch over every stake in the fence. And through that opening Satan entered and harmed him. We are like people who call the emergency services but leave out one digit of the telephone number. They call the fire brigade but fail to dial one digit. Will the fire brigade come? Will the emergency services come?
In the old days the emergency number was five fives. If you dialed four fives but omitted one, would they come? No. So it is here. If you need someone to answer the telephone, you must dial the entire number, not merely the digits you choose, in whatever order you please; otherwise, you will get no result. At most, you may hear an insult from the other end because you have disturbed someone else. The same thing happens in this case. We do not do everything. Let us examine our life against the law of God. Let us place the Gospel before us like a mirror and look at ourselves in it. Where would we even begin? What could we stand upon? We men—with a packet of cigarettes in our hand, with liqueurs, ouzo, and all such things,
with playing cards in our hand, with blasphemies on our lips, with a woman’s comb in our hand today, and with countless other things—how can we present ourselves before Christ? What are we doing? And then look at the woman: you see her with her hair cut short. God gave you that hair, and He will ask an account down to the last strand. But fashion has abolished it. The braid has been cut from her head, and in its place come fashionable adornments, provocative dress, and premarital relations. What can one even say? Abortions follow, and countless other things. On what grounds do we claim to have faith? We do not have this faith, nor do we do everything commanded; and at the very least, we do not truly admit it. Outwardly we admit it: “I am a sinner. I am sinful—what do you expect from me?” Yes, but when a person says, “I am sick,” and medicine exists—
he must go to the doctor; otherwise, his refusal is regarded as suicide. If no medicine existed, that would be another matter. But Christ has prepared medicine for us. Do we take this medicine, which is offered freely? These are thoughts, my dear friends, from which we can be benefited if people take them to heart. You know that everything here is passing away. No one knows whether he will see the dawn or return to his home. No one knows. Do we know when we shall die? How, then, ought we to live? Since it is so easy, let us set our lives in better order—more properly. God bears with us, though we do not deserve even to live. It is through God’s forbearance that we have a home, work, people around us, health, and air to breathe. Is breathing a burden?
What if God were to withdraw the air? Did we create it, so that it belongs to us? We would die like mice in half a second. Yet we do not take these things into account. Besides this, so many things today are presented to us with every appearance of truth, showing that nothing is going well. Not merely some things, but everything is going wrong—everything, from head to toe, from the palace to the humblest hut. Of course, I do not wish to exaggerate. Scattered among us are people of God whom we do not know. In his day, the Prophet Elijah said that he alone was left, but God reminded him that there were another seven thousand who had not bowed the knee to Baal. I do not know, but I want to believe that even today there are hidden servants of God.
There are women and men, educated and uneducated people, both among the clergy and the laity, and even among those who hold positions of authority. People of God are scattered everywhere. God sees them, and they are the ones who keep the earth from shaking and the heavens from collapsing. They are the ones who bind God’s hands. Someone may ask, “Can God be bound?” Read the account of Lot and see how God allows Himself to be bound. Remember when God told Lot to take his family and leave. His sons-in-law thought it was a joke; they stayed behind and were burned. His wife became a pillar of salt on the road, while Lot went on with his two daughters. Being an old man, he could not run far enough to reach the place God had told him to go.
God was about to burn Sodom and Gomorrah. So Lot said to Him, “I cannot make it all the way there. Let me go somewhere else, to a nearby town called Zoar.” What did God answer him? Have you read it? “Go where you need to go, so that you may release My hands.” One man had bound the hands of God, so that He could not burn the five cities of the plain. One man. Today it is not only one, but many thousands, especially among the Greek people, among the Orthodox both here and abroad, who truly lift pure and holy hands toward heaven. They are the ones who uphold the heavens, and for their sake God still keeps the heavens in place. We must therefore be grateful to these people.
At the same time, we must be wise and make use of this time of God’s forbearance. We must act in time to put right whatever has collapsed in our lives or is not as it should be. We must ask God for the strength to correct it. This is absolutely necessary. This is what the wise steward does: above all, he manages time wisely. Time above all. As Basil the Great says, if we lose money, perhaps tomorrow we can engage in some trade and earn it again. If we lose our health, perhaps tomorrow we can recover through an operation, prolonged treatment, or careful attention. But if we lose time, there is no bringing it back. The most serious matter is for a person to stand in awe of the time that God grants him. For if we do not use this time of God’s forbearance and kindness...
...which leads us to metanoia, to repentance, we shall be lost. Let us therefore hold fast to these things that flow from the Gospel and concern our lives. I do not believe that you who listened tonight, or those who will listen to these recordings as they travel to the ends of the earth, are without such problems—scandals, weaknesses, the need to forgive, and our obligation toward God, which is for our own sake and for our own good. If you believe you can retain something from all this, then hold on to it, so that the words spoken here may bear good fruit.

Βρήκα προχτές στις σημειώσεις κάτω, που μιλούσα στην έδρα, προφανώς μιας κόρης, και λέγει: «Γιατί, λέει, κύριε Παναγόπουλε, δεν με ακούει ο Θεός;» Και τι ήταν το αίτημα; «Προσεύχομαι τόσα χρόνια να μου δώσει έναν άνθρωπο χριστιανό, έναν άντρα χριστιανό, και δεν μου τον έδωσε μέχρι σήμερα. Είναι από την πίστη μου αυτό; Εγώ πιστεύω». Λοιπόν, γιατί δεν τον έδωσε ο Θεός; Και αν τον έχει παραγγείλει και δεν έγινε ακόμη; Και ποιος σου είπε ότι αυτός ο λεγόμενος χριστιανός θα σου κάνει τη ζωή χριστιανική; Και ποιος σου είπε ότι πρέπει να πάρεις χριστιανό εσύ, η χριστιανή, και δεν πρέπει να πάρεις έναν άλλον να τον αφομοιώσεις εσύ, η χριστιανή; Ποιος σου είπε εσένα ότι θα ενωθούν τα καλά, να κάνουν ένα τρίτο καλό;
Τι του ζητάνε;
Να τους δώσει, κατ’ αρχάς, να τους προσθέσει. Άρα πίστευαν ότι έχουν πίστη και ο Χριστός μας τους ξεσκέπασε ότι δεν έχουν κόκκου σινάπεως πίστη, καθόλου πίστη. Εμείς λέμε ότι πιστεύουμε, δεν λέμε; Βέβαια. Πού θα αποδεικνύεται η πίστη; Από την πράξη. Εφόσον δεν πράττουμε, δεν πιστεύουμε. Είναι σατανική η πίστη μας, διότι η πίστη αποδεικνύεται εκ των έργων. Η επισφράγηση της πίστεως διά των έργων. «Δείξε μου», λέγει ο Αδελφόθεος, «την πίστη από τα έργα». Εφόσον λοιπόν εγώ δεν πράττω, πώς πιστεύω; Το ότι έχω εικόνες στο σπίτι πάει να πει ότι πιστεύω; Τότε γιατί δεν νηστεύω; Τότε γιατί, εφόσον γυναίκα εγώ, έγινα άντρας;
Το ψυγείο μας, είναι ντροπή το τι υπάρχει μέσα. Ντροπή να ανοιχτεί ο μπεζαχτάς μας ή η κατάθεσή μας, είναι ντροπή. Αν φωνάξουν να πάει το καθένα σπίτι του, θα μείνουμε... σανίδι κάτω. Από πού κι ως πού πιστεύουμε; Γι’ αυτό είδατε πόσο ωραία: «Τόση δα λεπτήν πίστιν είχατε, θα λέγατε στο βουνό αυτό, στη συκάμινο αυτή παραδείγματι, να πάει στη θάλασσα και θα υπήκουε». Και εντούτοις, επαναλαμβάνω, δεν είναι, δεν είναι. Τώρα εμείς νομίζουμε ότι, αν κάνουμε και κάνα καλό, αν κάνουμε και κάτι τι, ότι αυτό μας το οφείλει ο Θεός. Ακούμε πολλές φορές: «Νηστεύω την Παρασκευή». «Γιατί νηστεύεις την Παρασκευή;» «Νηστεύω», λέει, «για την Αγία». Ώστε νηστεύεις; Έχει ανάγκη η Παρασκευή να νηστέψεις εσύ την Παρασκευή; Γιατί δεν νηστεύεις, αν θες, για την Αγία να νηστεύεις την Πέμπτη; Γιατί δεν νηστεύεις την Τρίτη; Γιατί δεν νηστεύεις τη Δευτέρα;
Να κάνουμε μερικά. Να κάνουμε περισσότερα από ό,τι κάνουν οι άλλοι ή μπορεί να κάνουμε κάτι που δεν κάνουν καθόλου οι άλλοι. Ναι, αλλά πάντα όμως δεν τα κάνουμε. Και όταν ο άνθρωπος δεν κάνει ολόκληρο τον νόμο, ομοιάζει ίσως του Δαβίδη, ο οποίος δεν πρόσεξε τη μοιχεία, η οποία πρόσθεσε και φόνο. Ομοιάζει του Ιούδα, ο οποίος δεν πρόσεξε την κλοπή. Έβγαλε κάποιον πάσσαλο από τον νόμο του Θεού. Μη κλέψεις, μη μοιχεύσεις, μη, μη, μη, ου. Δεν τα έκανε, δεν πρόσεξε όλα τα παλούκια, όλους τους πασάλους. Και από κάποιο μέρος μπήκε ο σατανάς και του έκαμε ζημιά. Ομοιάζουμε με τους ανθρώπους που καλούνε τις πρώτες βοήθειες, αλλά ένα νούμερο δεν το παίρνουν. Καλούνε την πυροσβεστική, αλλά ένα νούμερο δεν το παίρνουν. Θα έρθει η πυροσβεστική; Θα έρθουν οι πρώτες βοήθειες;
Να πάει στον γιατρό, διαφορετικά θεωρείται αυτοκτονία. Αν δεν υπάρχει, καλώς. Αλλά ο Χριστός μας έχει φτιάξει φάρμακο. Το παίρνουμε εμείς αυτό το φάρμακο, το οποίο είναι και δωρεάν; Είναι σκέψεις, αγαπητοί μου, αυτές που, αν προσεχτούν εκ μέρους των ανθρώπων, θα έχουμε να ωφεληθούμε. Ξέρετε ότι εδώ όλα είναι διαβατάρικα. Δεν ξέρει κανείς αν θα ξημερώσει, αν θα γυρίσει σπίτι του. Δεν ξέρει. Πότε θα πεθάνουμε, το ξέρουμε; Πώς πρέπει λοιπόν να πολιτευτούμε; Μια και είναι τόσο εύκολα να μπούμε πιο σωστά, πιο σωστά. Μας ανέχεται, δεν δικαιούμεθα να ζούμε. Η ανοχή του Θεού είναι που μας έχει σπίτι, που μας έχει δουλειά, που μας έχει ανθρώπους γύρω μας, που μας έχει υγεία, που μας έχει αέρα και αναπνέουμε. Είναι κουραστικό;
