Summary

The feast of Saint Nicholas presents him as a rule of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of self-control. Orthodox faith must be confirmed by Orthodox practice, especially amid controversy, propaganda, accusations, and pressures against the Church. Prayer, doctrinal vigilance, humility, and self-control are presented as essential for remaining faithful during spiritual turmoil.

This evening we find ourselves celebrating the feast of Saint Nicholas, and through his life this person offers us valuable moral and doctrinal lessons.

I wanted to make a brief departure from our series of talks on the Sermon on the Mount, as you know, and speak about him. Our Church, which possesses the Holy Spirit, gives us, in just a few words—specifically in the dismissal hymns, kontakia, and megalynaria of the Saints—the whole meaning of their lives and teachings.

Saint Nicholas teaches us through his dismissal hymn as follows: “The truth of your deeds revealed you to your flock as a rule of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of self-control.” And the hymn continues. I wanted to dwell on the first three fundamental points: faith, meekness, and self-control. It is this threefold pattern that distinguished Saint Nicholas and makes him come alive before us. Faith, as you yourselves know, is the most fundamental matter; it is what saves a person. But what kind of faith? That is the question.

The Saint is described as a rule of faith. A rule, as you know, is like the measuring stick we use. It is what enables us to measure and establish exact dimensions and proportions. In other words, it means precision in the faith. When we say “a rule of faith,” we mean exactness in the faith. Someone may say, “Well, if I believe, and this person believes, and that person believes, will we not all be saved so long as we believe?” The question is whether we believe rightly and truly, because there are many kinds of faith.

I do not know whether you remember that Christ asked His disciples, as we read in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 16, beginning with verse 13: “You who go out among the people in the world, tell Me, what are people saying about Me? Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” They answered, “Some say that You are the Prophet Elijah; others say that You are the honored Forerunner; and others say that You are one of the Prophets.” “But you,” He said, “who do you say that I am?” Peter immediately answered, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Christ then called him blessed, saying, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah—blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah—for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.” What you have said did not come from you; My Father spoke it, though He used you as His instrument. I am not merely some god. I am not merely the son of some god. I am the Son of God, the living God, for all the others are gods that do not exist. And today, if people were examined, we would find many different kinds of faith. You will have heard, as we have often said from this very place, that some people believe in God. Others believe in a higher power. Someone else believes in something above us.

“There is some higher being,” they say. Others even believe in Christ, but not in Christ as God, as is the case with the Millennialists, the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some believe that Christ did not rise, and that He was merely a man, a reformer, or a teacher. Some even go so far as to say that He was a socialist, while others call Him a communist. People give countless descriptions of the person of Jesus. But that is not the point. Are all these descriptions given by men true? That is the question. They are not true. There is only one truth. The Saint is described as a rule of faith. Where does this title come from?

It comes, as you know, from the blow he struck Arius at the First Ecumenical Council. That is its source. He did not care whether his hand would be cut off, because striking someone in the presence of the emperor meant losing one’s hand. He did not care if his hand was cut off, so long as he struck the mouth that was blaspheming the divinity of Jesus. That is where the matter begins. For, in case you do not know, Saint Nicholas was present at the First Ecumenical Council and took part in it. With his own ears he heard Arius blaspheme the divinity of Jesus—Arius, the father of today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses—for this denial of Jesus’ divinity has existed since that time.

At that time Constantine the Great called the Church and its leading representatives together to discuss the matter and bring an end to the dispute over whether Christ is divine or not. Saint Nicholas was among them. No one could silence Arius with words—and deeds had not yet spoken, for the miracle of Saint Spyridon came afterward—so Saint Nicholas, that meek man, was compelled to confess his faith by striking Arius before the Council and the emperor, with no concern for what might happen to his hand. Arius, of course, complained.

He said that if Nicholas had an argument, they should hear it, and if he had no argument, he should remain silent. But in the meantime Nicholas had already struck him hard. Afterward, as you may know, the Council should ordinarily have adjourned, Nicholas’ hand should have been cut off, he should have been stripped of his episcopal rank, and then the proceedings should have continued. I do not know who suggested that the Council should not be interrupted, but that he should be stripped of his rank and imprisoned, with the amputation of his hand postponed until the Council had completed its work. This view prevailed, and indeed they imprisoned him after stripping him of his episcopal vestments. But there is Someone above who sees all things.

He saw what had led Saint Nicholas to act in this way, and our Lord visited him in prison together with the Most Holy Theotokos. They asked him how and why he had come to be there, and he replied, “I am here for love of You, Lord.” The Lord then gave him a New Testament, the Gospel book that you always see him characteristically holding in his icon, while the Most Holy Theotokos gave him the omophorion. You will also always have seen Saint Nicholas wearing the omophorion as though it had been placed over him from outside. Iconographers still preserve this tradition: when they depict Saint Nicholas, they paint the Most Holy Theotokos and the Lord above him, one on either side, for it was they who restored him.

The next day, some of his people, having learned that he was in prison, went to bring him a little food. They found him sitting there with the omophorion and the Gospel book, restored by the Lord. This is why the Church describes him as a rule of faith. He understood the matter of faith thoroughly and correctly.

These days find us Orthodox Christians in a state of turmoil concerning our faith. We are being tested in these days, and we must be attentive, because a very great campaign of propaganda is under way.

Those who do not understand the situation well may be led astray and suffer greatly. Besides the broader harm that may be done, we ourselves will also suffer. For if the Lord abandons us, we may even face martyrdom. The Catholic Inquisition was very cruel; we shall have it again. For, as you know...

an attempt is being made to reunite what has been divided, but at the expense of the truth.

It is good to have one flock, but it is not good to have a wolf within the flock. We too must pay attention to this. A person who does not love is wrong, but so is a person who agrees where he ought not to agree, because love is one thing and agreement is another. I love you because you are a human being and bear the image of God, but I do not agree with your errors or your heresy. I have an obligation to say, “I do not agree.” God will hold me accountable for this. Loving you is another matter, whether you are a Muslim, a Roman Catholic, a Buddhist, or anything else. Our Church will even undertake to bury such people, because they are human beings. But as for their beliefs...

I have the right not to agree with you about your beliefs. That is the issue under examination, not whether I love you. Everyone wants love, but above love stands the truth. When truth is absent from love, love itself becomes a lie. This is something we must take care to understand. In any case, tonight we are speaking about Saint Nicholas. Do you know one notable fact about him? Saint Nicholas, as you know—or, if you do not know, then learn it—was born in Patara. That is the same Patara associated with Methodios, bishop of Patara, whom you will have heard of. Later Saint Nicholas became bishop of Myra in Lycia, in Asia Minor. When he fell asleep in the Lord, his body remained whole, and Saint Nicholas’ body has surely remained whole to this day. His holy relic was transferred to Bari in Italy.

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated there, and they would place a small basin beneath his feet, from which myrrh flowed. The clergy prolonged the Divine Liturgy as much as they could so that they might collect more myrrh. But when the Roman Catholic Church abandoned Orthodoxy and made itself into a separate church, a Roman Catholic priest began serving there, and from that point Saint Nicholas ceased to produce myrrh. Since we are speaking about him, perhaps he did not understand—or perhaps, you know, he understood something more than I do. This was why the Catholics sold his relic to the Russians. They claim they still have it and display an empty tomb there, but it is nothing; there is nothing inside it.

It was sold to the Russians. The Russians possess eighty-three complete holy relics, and they preserve them to this day, though they treat them as archaeological objects. When they guide visitors there, they do not tell them that these relics are the fruit of the Orthodox faith and are preserved by the grace of God, as I explained when I spoke to you about Saint Nektarios. I firmly believe that the relic of Saint Nicholas is among them. And so he said, “No, I will give you no myrrh.” He gave them no myrrh, and they sold him because they had no use for him. What is there in Bari is not the relic of Saint Nicholas; Saint Nicholas’ body is whole. Saint Nicholas’ body is whole. We must therefore keep in mind that...

love is one thing and faith is another. We are obliged to preserve our faith in its true form, just as God gave it to us. For we believe rightly only when we also act rightly. If we begin to act wrongly, then we do not believe rightly, because right belief is demonstrated by right practice.

You know—let me touch on this in passing—how many things have been altered. A commission is being formed for these matters, if it has not already been formed, and Westerners and Easterners will meet to discuss what? What is there to discuss? The Papists are not prepared to depart from their doctrines by so much as a hair. They say that the prodigals must return—and by that they mean that we are the prodigals. How, then, is this love to be achieved? Must we deny Christ? Must we deny the correctness of the faith for the sake of love? And without true Love, who is Christ, what kind of love would that be?

There you have it. Do you remember—I am taking you further back, since this subject has come up—when the late Athenagoras met the previous Pope in Jerusalem? They met somewhere and discussed these things, but without consulting the Master of the house. They did not go to the tomb of Christ so that Athenagoras might say to him, “Come, Brother Paul, shall we not go to the Master of the house and ask Him, since He is the One we are speaking about? If He gives you the Light of the Resurrection, I will kiss the soles of your feet. But since for two thousand years He has not given you the Light of the Resurrection, how can I deny Him?” Such a union would be harmful to both of us: to you, who departed, and to me, if I follow you, for then we shall both be lost. It is better for me to remain where I am, in the hope that one day you may return. What kind of love is this?

I do not know whether you have ever seriously considered this. Christ said that the Holy Spirit “proceeds from the Father.” How dare you, mere human beings, say, “and from the Son”? Did Christ not know? Why do you insist upon it? Is this phrase, “and from the Son,” nothing? Will they renounce it? If they erase it, remove it, cast it away, and say, “We no longer confess this,” then may they be blessed. Will the Pope cease claiming that he is first and possesses the primacy, when in truth he is not first? Will he cease claiming that he is infallible? Will he abandon these things? If so, then we have no dispute. Why should we not be one flock? Let us be one flock, risen to new life. Why not?

Will he cease saying that the Most Holy Theotokos was immaculate, and thereby blaspheming her? The Most Holy Theotokos was indeed spotless. Will they cease celebrating the marriage of the Most Holy Theotokos to Joseph? Did you know that the Catholic Church has a feast of the marriage of the Most Holy Theotokos?

It is in January. Do you know that they believe in what is called purgatorial fire—that after death a person can pass through that fire on the way to Hell and have his sins cleansed afterward? Do you know that they say that if I have performed an abundance of good works, you may take some of them and give them to someone else so that he may be saved in the next life? Do you know this? Will they abandon these beliefs? If they do, then let us all go to Rome this very moment. Of course we should go and embrace one another. But they will abandon nothing. They will abandon absolutely nothing. What, then, will happen? I do not know what kind of love this is. You know that Christ said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son.” You know that they do not baptize in this manner. You know that He took the cup and said, “Drink from it, all of you.” You know that they do not give everyone Holy Communion from the chalice.

You know that there is no reason to bring prosphora to their church, because they have no sacrifice. And when you die, you will be cast away like a dog in a vineyard, for there is nothing for you beyond the grave. Do you know these things? So where are we to stand today, and how are we to ask Saint Nicholas for guidance? Where? Since we say that we want to establish love, with whom will we establish it, and how? Love means that we pray, but they too must be willing to return. How can we yield on matters of doctrine? How can we make the sign of the Cross with five fingers when we are to make it with three: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? The Most Holy Theotokos and the Pope are not gods. To them the Pope is a god. To them the Most Holy Theotokos is a god. How can this be? Is that the faith? There are not five divine persons.

Do you understand? We must therefore be attentive to these matters. We say that we believe, yet we also flirt with compromise: “Let us have love.” My dear friend, what does that mean? Yes, let us have love, but let us do what is right. Even now the Orthodox Church may make concessions, but not on matters of doctrine. Let her make concessions in secondary matters. For example, if priests do not want beards, let them be without beards. They do not want beards. Nowadays the devil has taken beards from the priests and put them on laymen, who boast of them. If priests do not want to wear cassocks because they are hot, let them go without them. If they want to go to a cabaret tomorrow, let them go to a cabaret. Let them do as they wish in secondary matters. But what about the other matters, the matters of doctrine? Would that be love? What kind of love would it be? Think about this and include it in your prayers. You must pray, because we are in danger in these days.

We shall face what others have faced, though because we ourselves have not faced it, we do not believe those people. Difficult days lie ahead. A great tempest surrounds us, a great storm, and unless we go and awaken Christ so that He may rise and say, “Peace! Be still!” we shall be shipwrecked. You see what is happening all around us. You see what the newspapers are writing. The attack against Orthodoxy is organized. Everyone—black, white, yellow, and red—is against Orthodoxy. Not against Papism, not against Protestantism, not against Islam. No, no, no. They are against Orthodoxy, that thorn in their eye. You have seen what is happening in... You are reading about it today, are you not? What is happening in Kefallonia? Do you know what the devil says? He says, “Prokopios, I am the one who incited them to do these things to you. But all those who accuse you are also here in my grasp.”

One person sets a thousand crickets chirping. They accuse you, but I have infected all of them from within, because their accusations are unjust. How is an ordinary person to understand all this? He reads the newspapers, sees what priests are said to be doing, and concludes, “Only Orthodoxy is under attack.” Since I have raised the subject, and because many are scandalized, may I tell you something? Why do you accuse the bishop of Kefallonia of cutting up the relic of Saint Gerasimos? Where are the pieces he supposedly gave away?

Where are the pieces they say were given away? Who has appeared anywhere in Greece or abroad and said, “I have a piece of the Saint’s finger”?

Did they take petroleum in exchange for it? If someone received a relic as a blessing, he received it so that the faithful of his diocese or monastery might venerate it, and so forth. Where are these pieces? And tell me: who handed Saint Gerasimos over to Prokopios with his body completely intact? How can anyone assure us that this finger has not been missing since the day the Saint was taken from the grave? Could not this mark have been made by the spade when they exhumed him and cut him there? A thousand other things may have happened as well. Who entrusted the Saint’s intact body to this man, so that people may now demand an account from him and accuse him of cutting up the Saint? Woe to us on the Day of Judgment—to those who say and write these things, and to us who give our approval and join in the accusations. If tomorrow there is a proclamation

of the venerable woman I once told you about, then through a naive misunderstanding the bishop will be accused because a finger is missing: they will say that the bishop stole it, that a toe is missing, that a piece is missing from here, and so forth. I have that finger today, before she has even been declared a Saint. I have had it since the exhumation. I was present at the exhumation. The spade broke it off from above. I had to gather what the spade had broken away, and certain other people possess such pieces as well. Yet tomorrow they will say that the Metropolitan stole them from the relic and sold them. You do not know what is happening or what is being plotted. Suddenly Pontikis rises and goes to Kyriaki, with Restis there as well. Others sent him; propaganda sent Restis there too. He is an instrument who keeps his nose to the ground, so that Orthodoxy may be swallowed up and removed from the way.

But Christ will not be removed. Even if only five remain, those five will remain. And blessed are those who succeed in remaining and walking in this true faith. No one will remove Him. We are simply shedding light on a situation that some people have not understood—how deep it goes and what these people are writing. That alone is good.

The second thing Saint Nicholas teaches us is the great virtue of meekness. He is presented as an image of meekness. I do not know whether you have ever reflected on this virtue or whether you have ever tried to acquire it. Have you noticed what Christ said about this virtue? “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.”

Do you know what “learn” means here? Consider the words, “Study carefully the lilies of the field.” They neither spin nor do any of these things. Go, He says, and reflect deeply; go and study; give your attention to the lilies of the field. They neither spin nor water nor dye anything, and yet they become so beautiful that a person is humbled at the sight of them: their splendor is greater even than Solomon’s. In the same way, apply yourselves diligently and seek to acquire meekness. Have you ever seen Christ beside Himself or losing control? Why, then, do we so often lose control? Why do we later feel ashamed of ourselves, while people who were watching us and expected a different response in a difficult moment see our behavior and say, “There is nothing real in his faith”?

Why does this happen? Because we have never seriously considered that we must be meek in every circumstance. And we lack meekness because we do not believe rightly. If a person believes correctly and holds the true faith, then he believes in the providence of God. He believes that God knows everything, governs everything, and is at work in everything. God can intervene, yet sometimes He does not intervene for particular reasons. Then the person remains meek and says, “Since God knows about this, what am I to do? How am I to act?” This meekness, which is a great virtue, is missing from people today. A person’s meekness is revealed by his faith. And today there are people who have neither peace nor meekness.

We see this in the courts and in many other situations. Indeed, we hear many people say, “I do not bother anyone. I love peace, tranquility, and meekness. But if someone bothers me...” That means the little beast is sleeping inside you. You are simply waiting for the right circumstances to let that beast out, so that it may devour both you and the rest of us. That is not the point. A person must examine himself in that beautiful parable Christ told, the parable of the Good Samaritan. There we see three human conditions. We see the robber, who took something he had never given—something that belonged to another. We see the priest and the Levite, who did not take anything, but neither did they give anything.

They came, saw, and passed by on the other side. And we see the Samaritan, who took nothing but gave of himself. A person must be in this third condition. He must not be good only to those who are good and evil toward those who are evil. If possible, he should even absorb the evil of others without returning it. But because he does not possess the true faith and does not trust in Christ completely, he still tries to arrange everything for himself. That is precisely why we so often hear angry words and even blasphemies, and the grace of God departs. You enter Christian homes and find that the children have not spoken to one another for a week. Perhaps the husband said something, and so forth.

His wife does not speak to him for fifteen days, or the husband does not speak to his wife, the father to his child, or one colleague to another, and so forth. Yet such a person calls himself a Christian, goes to Church every Sunday, and at Pascha holds the Light of the Resurrection in his hand, along with a thousand other outward signs. But poor meekness is nowhere to be found. A person needs deep inner cultivation, yet that cultivation does not take place. Saint Nicholas possessed this meekness. When doctrine was at stake, however, he boldly declared where he stood. As I have said, meekness is absent when true faith and proper inner order are lacking. It departs. And when tempers flare, when we demand revenge, satisfaction, an explanation, justice, and similar things,

the grace of God immediately departs and says, “Since you intend to manage everything by yourself, there is no longer any need for Me to remain here.” That is what happens. But a person must not think in this way. He must leave everything to the judgment and will of God. Then, whatever happens, he has nothing to fear. He is secure, because Christ knows everything: He knows how to govern and what to permit. Moreover, in many cases Christ deliberately permits temptations so that those who are proven may be revealed, as Paul says. The Gospel likewise says, “It is necessary that stumbling blocks come,” so that those who are proven may be revealed. I shall see what you are made of when the sea grows rough, when circumstances become fierce, when you are unjustly slandered, and when people say things about you and accuse you of deeds you never committed.

How did Saint Nektarios of Aegina face that great conspiracy and slander? Prokopios of Kefallinia is hardly the first; many others before him have gone through the same thing. Others have been stoned, insulted, and humiliated for Christ’s sake—many, many others. And what happened then? Saint Nektarios of Aegina did not say a word. They said of him, “Where did he throw the illegitimate babies? He threw them into the well,” and so on. Yet he said nothing. His blood did not boil; he did nothing at all. Lord, did he not understand? Was he not learned? Did he not know how to answer? Did he not know how to silence them or excommunicate them? He knew how to do all these things, but he did none of them. He simply raised his eyes and looked at the icon of Christ above him. Did Christ not know how to answer Pilate? Yet He too remained silent and gave no answer. He remained meek, and...

Satan tries to sweep you along with him; he tries to drag you away. How many people he has stirred up! One man is being put to the test there, but how many people outside the affair has Satan now caught, tormenting them and making them dance on hot coals day and night! A person must understand these things. When you see Titanics sinking, the little boats should draw away to safety. Yet we go near at sunset, quarrel, and offer our own opinions. What do you know, and what do I know, about what is happening? You see great vessels sinking. If they are sinking, draw aside and pray. Choose instead to awaken Him who sleeps in the bow and cry out within the Church, “Master, we are perishing!” If you do not, woe to you. For the way things are going, people will no longer become clergy. And when there are no clergy tomorrow to read the prayers over you, then we shall talk about it.

When there are no clergy to read even a Trisagion over you tomorrow, then we shall talk. Write to me from the other side, if I am still here. Then you will learn the holiness of Orthodoxy, how you ought to have defended Orthodoxy, and how you ought to have remained faithful. Even if all these accusations are true, they do us no good. Even if they are true, we gain nothing from them. They give us no rightful satisfaction and bring us no honor, because no one grieved over this situation. We all became savage and wanted, if possible, to take a bite ourselves. No one said to Christ, “I grieve with You.” Everyone said, “Why do You tolerate these people? Where is Christ, and where is the Saint, that he does not strike him with a thunderbolt?” But why do you not think more carefully? Since he could have struck him and did not, could the accusations perhaps be false? Or perhaps the Saint wanted his relic to go there, so that you might keep it among you and be guarded from the devil? You became savage. Where is your meekness? Where is your Orthodox faith? Where is your inner order, and where is your effort to enlighten the person who does not know, who reads...

some tabloid and says to you, “This will send us to our ruin”? Eleftherotypia does not decide who enters Paradise. So where is its authority? Most Christians do not possess this virtue of meekness. Go into Christian homes and you will hear them shaking with shouting and angry tempers. And they tell you, “We are human beings; we are not Christs.” It is a great blasphemy for a Christian to say such a thing. A Christian is not merely human; a Christian is more than an ordinary human being. A Christian is something different and is not consumed by things as others are. A Christian is not like everyone else but rises above them, because he has Christ with him. He sees differently and judges differently. He endures; he is persecuted but does not persecute; he is insulted but does not insult; he is driven away but does not abandon his place. A Christian is a strange and wondrous thing. Everyone stops in wonder before him. “How marvelous!” the early Christians would say when they saw Christian women. If those early Christians awoke today and saw Christian women, they would...

be frightened and run away. In any case, may you all possess this virtue of meekness. Unfortunately, we lack it because we do not have true and Orthodox faith. The third aspect of the Saint is self-control. The hymn calls him “a teacher of self-control.” From early childhood he taught self-control. How did he teach it, someone may ask? On Wednesdays and Fridays, he would not take milk from his mother’s breast. He nursed only once a day, after sunset. He is not the only Saint who did this. We Athenians also have the Saint of Domvou. What is his name? Seraphim—Saint Seraphim of Domvou. He too would not take milk from his mother’s breast on Wednesdays and Fridays. Thus, from that early age, Saint Nicholas appeared as a teacher of self-control.

Self-control has many forms. There is control of the tongue, control of the stomach, control of the flesh, control of the eyes and what they see, and control of the ears and what they hear. A person must exercise self-control in all these things. He must be undisciplined in nothing and must not be carried away by anything unnecessary. He must govern all these things rather than be governed by them, which is not what happens with us. There are married couples who, during fasting seasons, fast from the cooking pot but not from the marriage bed. I am not speaking about men and women living in fornication, about girls and young men who show no restraint and understand nothing. I am not speaking about adulterers. I am speaking about so-called Christians who are preparing to receive Christ. The Prophet Moses was the first to undertake this kind of fast.

For forty days and forty nights he remained without food on Mount Sinai, so that he might receive the Word of God upon tablets of stone. We observe this lighter fast so that we may receive the Word of God incarnate from the Most Holy Theotokos. Yet people do not observe it. They will not undertake even this small struggle, though the struggle is for our own benefit. We have not undertaken it, and yet we expect to celebrate Saint Nicholas. We do not restrain our eyes and are not content with what is necessary. Indeed, today we spend hours standing before the television and, apart from a few exceptions, are often instructed by what is plainly a demon-box. For the people behind it—I dare say—not one believes in anything. If there is an exception, all honor to that person. I pray that they may all become believers.

Perhaps there is one believer among them, and yet we sit there open-mouthed, watching tirelessly and consuming domestic programming, at the expense of prayer, other reading, and self-examination—the work of discovering the scoundrel within us and setting ourselves in order. We have become stupefied beneath that box, which the Jews do not keep in their homes. I have told you before: the Jews do not keep it in their homes. Some families avoid such programming for themselves and their children. They focus instead on educating their children and preparing them to become scholars and leaders rather than ordinary employees or manual laborers. They do not permit their children to sit there and become fools before those foolish boxes.

Many things ought to teach us, but we pay no attention. Self-control, then, has many different aspects. If I were to dwell today on the offense that will be committed against Saint Nicholas, then Saint Nicholas would have to rise with his staff and break the heads of many men named Nicholas today...

who stubbornly disregard the fast. For as you know, the feast of Saint Nicholas always falls within this forty-day fast. It is not one of the movable feasts. It always falls on the sixth of December, within the forty days. It is a fast day, with wine and oil permitted. We are not living under occupation, nor are we starving. We are all overflowing with food, each of us suffering from two hundred illnesses caused by feasting.

We delight in all this feasting, and yet we behave as though we were about to receive guests who...

come, I do not know from where, famished after many years, and we must feed them. So today they abolish the Saint’s fast. Yet if both hosts and guests wished to receive his blessing, they ought to imitate the Saint’s life. They could prepare any number of dishes cooked with oil in their homes today—calamari, cuttlefish, vegetable pies, and many other fine foods.

The others are already sick of rich food. All those gentlemen have had their fill of lamb, steaks, and everything else that will be served to them today; they eat those things every day. If you served them a fasting menu prepared with oil, they would lick their fingers and thank you. You would also give them the opportunity to understand that you are not a Jew, who keeps his faith one hundred percent and does not depart from it by a single stroke, even keeping the Scripture by his pillow.

He takes care to go to his synagogue, leading his Jewish children by the hand, and so forth. But we are ashamed. Why? Because someone might misunderstand us. Who would misunderstand us? And how can you say to Saint Nicholas, “Leave today, Saint Nicholas, because I will have people coming to offer me greetings”? What greetings will they offer you, my child? What will they say to you, and on whose account will they say it? If I, the Saint who gives you the occasion to celebrate your feast day, leave your house, who will remain there? And why do you want the good wishes of unbelievers who come and might supposedly misunderstand you? At any moment I may depart. What can they do for you? How can they help you—with your daughters, your children, your work, your health, or your journey? How can they help you at all? And yet this is unbelief.

Such unbelief appears within Orthodoxy on the feast of a Saint who was a teacher of self-control from early childhood. As you know, self-control—even if it does not mean total abstinence from food—is the mother of many good things. There would be no asylums today if there were self-control. There would be no corruption or fornication if there were self-control. Observe a three-day fast and you will see all the houses of corruption close. Everything would stop, because this whole worm is fed on meat, steak, hamburgers, fried eggs, and the like. That is how it is sustained. When fasting begins, the fortress is captured and falls at once. Corruption stops. Whom do we receive into our homes today?

People who do not believe. Why do you need such a person to come to your house? If you want him to come, let him come so that you may teach him. But if you intend to give way for his sake and drive your Saint from your house—and, by extension, Christ, who made him a Saint and still preserves him as a Saint—then what are we doing? What will you be, and what will I be? Pay attention to these things and take them to heart. This is not the only feast; there are other feasts as well. The feast of Saint Spyridon will come next, then Saint Eleftherios, and other feasts will follow, such as Saint Charalambos—I do not know which comes first. Let us have discernment. I am not saying that we should make no offering for our feast day; we should. But it must be timely, properly placed in the calendar, fitting, and appropriate. Do not worry about misunderstandings and such things. You have a duty to teach, and you will teach through Orthodox practice.

Suppose someone comes to your home on the feast of Saint Nicholas and you serve him everything as though it were Pascha. Do you know what he will say to Christ tomorrow? “I went to one of Your people, and I saw that his ways were no different from mine.” We become deniers of the faith. Do you understand? Praxis—the active ascetic life, expressed as Orthodox practice—is what confirms Orthodox belief. But when there is no Orthodox practice, how can this be? Forgive me for the tone and manner in which I speak, but I believe these things have a sound moral basis. If someone says, “I believe in nothing,” very well. If you believe in nothing, I do not want you in my home. But who has the strength to tell certain people that they are not wanted and that you do not want them coming to your house?

What should I do—close the door? Let me help you: do not visit them. Do not go to their homes when they celebrate, and do not be afraid; they will stop coming to yours. But when you visit them, what are they supposed to do? They must return the visit, whether they wish to or not. Try not going once or twice, and the whole matter will end. But we enjoy these customs ourselves while at the same time insisting that we are Christians.

How clearly our conduct shows that we are not Christians! If we were doing something Christian, if we were going in order to edify others through our attitude, conduct, and words, then let it be blessed. Let us do it. But it must always be done with meekness. Elsewhere Paul speaks of those outside who oppose us and says that they must be addressed in a spirit of meekness—not with shouting or savagery, but by enlightening and admonishing them.

“Admonish the disorderly.” It says “admonish”; it does not say “punish.” Put some sense into him. Say, “I would like us to discuss this matter and examine it in the light of the Gospel and of Christ.” He may tell you, “I do not believe in the Gospel.” Then there is no need for further discussion, wasting our brainpower and our strength. We stop there, because I have nothing more to preach, remind you of, or present to you beyond what Jesus Christ says, in whom I believe. Since you do not believe in Him, our discussion ends; we have no common point of contact. Let us stop trying to speak as important people, as wise people, as educated people, or as rational people. At that point, permit me to say, we are speaking like fools, because the One who will judge us is neither you nor I nor anyone else. It is He. If, then, I pay no heed to His admonition, His law, His word...

If I do not take His admonition, His law, His word, and His preaching into account, then I accomplish nothing, and there is no need for discussion. Never enter into a discussion unless Christ’s judgment is at the center—not what you or I say. You and I are guided by emotions and other mistaken ideas. If Christ’s judgment is different, what benefit is there in our agreeing about something else? For one day we shall pass over Christ’s bridge of sighs. We shall be judged according to His Gospel. So, can my opinion stand the test of the Gospel? Can it stand before the teaching of Jesus, the Church of Jesus, and the Synods of Jesus? Can it? If it can, then by all means, let us discuss it. But if it cannot, the discussion is pointless, and we should not have it. Nor should we discuss matters we do not understand. ‘My dear friend, I do not know how to answer you; let us ask someone else who does know.’

Is it shameful to say, ‘I do not know’? Look at how the heretics speak. When you put one of them in a difficult position, he will tell you to come and speak with someone above him, or he will bring you someone more senior, one of his superiors. He has the humility to step aside and say, ‘This is as far as my knowledge goes.’

But we go on talking nonsense and end up making the other man look wise in his own eyes. So I would ask you to be careful about these things, if we wish to be saved. In conclusion, to those of you listening here at this moment, and to those who will hear these words through the recordings that travel to the ends of the earth, throughout the whole world, by means of cassette tapes, radios, and radio stations,

I would say this: pray for Orthodoxy, because outside Orthodoxy—the true faith—there is no salvation.

«Υπάρχει κάποιο ανώτερο ον», λέγουν. Άλλοι πιστεύουν και σε αυτόν τον Χριστό, αλλά όχι ως Θεό τον Χριστό, όπως εν προκειμένω οι Χιλιασταί, οι Ιεχωβίται. Άλλοι πιστεύουν ότι ο Χριστός δεν ανέστη, ότι ο Χριστός ήταν ένας ψιλός άνθρωπος, ένας αναμορφωτής, ένας διδάσκαλος. Άλλοι μάλιστα φτάνουν στο σημείο να λένε ότι ήταν ένας σοσιαλιστής, άλλος ένας κομμουνιστής. Χίλιους δυο ορισμούς δίνουν στην υπόθεση του προσώπου του Ιησού. Το θέμα όμως δεν είναι αυτό. Είναι αληθινοί όλοι αυτοί οι χαρακτηρισμοί οι οποίοι δίνονται εκ μέρους των ανθρώπων; Αυτό είναι το θέμα. Δεν είναι αληθινοί. Η αλήθεια είναι μία. Ο Άγιος χαρακτηρίζεται κανών πίστεως. Πού το αντλεί;

Γνωρίζετε, έτσι παρεμπιπτόντως το θίγω το θέμα, πόσα πράγματα έχουν τροποποιηθεί. Κατ’ αυτά γίνεται μια επιτροπή, δεν ξέρω αν έγινε, και θα συναντηθούν Δυτικοί με Ανατολικούς να συζητήσουν τι; Τι να συζητήσουν; Οι Παπικοί δεν είναι διατεθειμένοι να φύγουν από τις δοξασίες τους ούτε μία τρίχα. Να επιστρέψουν, λέει, οι άσωτοι· εμείς είμαστε οι άσωτοι. Πώς θα γίνει η αγάπη λοιπόν; Εν προκειμένω, πρέπει να αρνηθούμε τον Χριστό; Πρέπει να αρνηθούμε την ορθότητα της πίστεως για να γίνει η αγάπη; Και χωρίς την πραγματική αγάπη, τον Χριστό, τι είδους αγάπη θα είναι αυτή;

Γεια σας. Ενθυμείσθε, σας πάω πιο πίσω, μια και ήρθε μπροστά αυτό το θέμα. Όταν ζούσε ο μακαρίτης ο Αθηναγόρας με τον προ αυτού Πάπα, στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Και εκεί συναντηθήκαν κάπου και τα συζητήσαν. Αλλά χωρίς τον Ξενοδόχο όμως. Δεν πήγανε στον τάφο του Χριστού να του πει ο Αθηναγόρας: «Έλα εδώ, αδελφέ Παύλε, δεν πάμε μέχρι τον Ξενοδόχο να τον ρωτήσουμε, γιατί γι’ αυτό μιλάμε τώρα; Και αν σου δώσει το Φως της Αναστάσεως, εγώ θα σου φιλήσω την πατούσα. Εφόσον δυο χιλιάδες χρόνια δεν σου δίνει το Φως της Αναστάσεως, εγώ πώς θα τον αρνηθώ;» Λέει, είναι κακό και για τους δυο μας· και για σένα που έφυγες και εγώ που σε ακολουθώ και θα χαθούμε και οι δύο. Λέει, είναι καλύτερα να μείνω εδώ που μένω, μήπως εσύ επιστρέψεις ποτέ. Τι είδους αγάπη είναι αυτή;

Αυτό δεν ξέρω αν σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ. Είπε ο Χριστός μας ότι «το Πνεύμα το Άγιον, το εκ του Πατρός εκπορευόμενον». Πώς εσείς τολμάτε, άνθρωποι, να πείτε «και εκ του Υιού»; Δεν ήξερε ο Χριστός; Τι με το επιδιώκετε; Δεν είναι αυτό «και εκ του Υιού», δεν είναι τίποτα αυτό; Θα το αρνηθούνε; Αν το απαλείψουν, αν το βγάλουν, αν το πετάξουν και πούνε «εμείς δεν το λέμε πλέον», να είναι ευλογημένοι. Θα πάψει ο Πάπας να λέει ότι είναι πρώτος, να έχει το πρωτείο, γιατί δεν είναι πρώτος στην πραγματικότητα; Θα πάψει να λέει ότι είναι αλάθητος; Θα τα εγκαταλείψει αυτά; Τότε δεν έχουμε κανένα λόγο. Γιατί να μην είμαστε μία ποίμνη; Να είμεθα μία ποίμνη, αναστημένη. Διατί;

Θα πάψει να λέει ότι η Παναγία μας ήταν άσπιλος και να τη βλαστημάει; Ήταν άσπιλος η Παναγία μας. Θα πάψει να εορτάζουνε γάμο της Παναγίας με τον Ιωσήφ; Το ξέρετε ότι υπάρχει στην Εκκλησία την Καθολική εορτή του γάμου της Παναγίας;

Ένας βάζει χίλια τριζόνια. Αυτοί σε κατηγορούνε, αλλά όλους αυτούς τους έχω βάλει λοβούρα μέσα, γιατί δεν σε κατηγορούν σωστά. Πού να τα πιάσει ο άνθρωπος αυτά; Διαβάζει εφημερίδες ο άνθρωπος, βλέπεις εδώ οι παπάδες τι κάνουν και λέει: «Μόνο η Ορθοδοξία βάλλεται». Θέλετε να σας πω κάτι, μια και σας το θίγω, γιατί πολλοί σκανδαλίζονται; Επιτρέψτε μου. Τι τον κατηγορείς τον Άγιο Κεφαλληνίας ότι τεμάχισε τον Άγιο Γεράσιμο; Πού είναι τα κομμάτια που έδωσε;

Πού είναι τα κομμάτια που έδωσαν; Ποιος παρουσιάστηκε στο Πανελλήνιο ή στο εξωτερικό να πει ότι εγώ έχω λίγο από το δάχτυλο του Αγίου;

Στην Ορθοδοξία, από Άγιο ο οποίος είτο της εγκρατείας δάσκαλος από μικρό παιδί. Και όπως ξέρετε, η εγκράτεια, αν όχι τελείως ασιτία, η εγκράτεια όμως είναι μήτηρ πολλών αγαθών. Δεν θα υπήρχαν τρελάδικα σήμερα αν υπήρχε εγκράτεια. Δεν θα υπήρχαν, δεν θα υπήρχαν διαφθορά και πορνεία εάν υπήρχε εγκράτεια. Κάντε μια τριήμερον νηστεία να δείτε ότι κλείσανε όλα τα διαφθορεία. Σταμάτησαν όλα, γιατί όλος αυτός ο σκώληξ τρέφεται με κρέατα, με μπριτζόλα, με μπιφτέκι, με χτυπητά αβγά και λοιπά. Έτσι διατηρείται. Αν γίνει νηστεία, κατελήφθη το φρούριο, έπεσε αμέσως. Η διαφθορά σταμάτησε. Δεχόμεθα σήμερα, ποιους δεχόμεθα;

Αυτός που θα έρθει την ημέρα του Αγίου Νικολάου, φερ’ ειπείν, στο σπίτι σου και εσύ θα του παραθέσεις πασχαλινά τα πάντα, ξέρεις τι θα πει στον Χριστό αύριο; «Εγώ πήγα σε έναν δικό σου, ο οποίος είδα ότι δεν διαφέρει τίποτα από τα δικά μου». Είμαστε αρνηταί της πίστεως εμείς. Καταλάβατε; Η πράξις, η ορθοπραξία, είναι εκείνη που επιβεβαιώνει την ορθοπιστία. Α, λοιπόν, δεν υπάρχει ορθοπραξία. Είναι δυνατόν; Δεν ξέρω, με συγχωρείτε με τον τόνο και με τον τρόπο που μιλώ, αλλά νομίζω ότι έχουν κάποια ηθική βάση. Να πεις «δεν πιστεύω τίποτα», εντάξει. Εάν δεν πιστεύεις τίποτα, δεν σε θέλω σπίτι μου. Αλλά ποιος έχει τη δύναμη να μη θέλει ορισμένους ανθρώπους στο σπίτι και θέλεις να μην έρθουν σπίτι σου;
