Summary
The lecturer presents creation, human life, and the body as mysteries whose underlying origin and operation science can describe but cannot create. Testimonies, votive offerings, medical cases, and the lecturer’s publications are offered as contemporary evidence of miracles associated especially with Saint Nektarios. The miracles of Christ, the Apostles, relics, icons, and modern saints show that Christianity is not irrational but transcends the limits of unaided human reason.

Continuing, I see from my notes that I intended to say something more about these questions, and specifically about the matter of miracles. That is where we left off the day before yesterday, and of course we did not have enough time to say more and give as complete a picture as possible—for no subject can ever be exhausted. We simply offer a few points so that, on this basis, and together with what each person may gather from other incidents, other reading, or other talks, he may form his own view on these matters. If I remember correctly, I said that the whole of creation is a miracle.
We live within a miracle. We ourselves are a miracle. Countless miracles surround us—things we can describe but cannot reproduce. Something happens, but we do not know how it happens. We see it, but we do not know its origin. Who made life? Does life exist by itself? Is not life itself a mystery? We are said to be alive—and indeed we are: we speak with one another, we move, we exist, and so forth. Yet we do not know how this came to be. Here the science of every age comes up against its limit. Science can make almost anything except the one thing it cannot make: it cannot make life. It can only work with what already exists.
And who made the things that exist? Did they simply come into being without being created? Even today, when science is considered so advanced, it merely discovers laws which, as I told you the day before yesterday, Someone else made and established. Man did not make them. We have created no more than those who came before us did. We found everything already here. We have only discovered the laws governing the relationships among these things, and on that basis new things are revealed to us every day—mysteries that we might have discovered yesterday or the day before. But they were already there. Man cannot say that he made them, because he did not. Consider, as you know from physics, how much water there is in relation to the land. Who made the water?
We found water already here—but what is water? What is it, really? We have given it names, definitions, and so forth. Yes—but who made it, and what is water in its true nature? It is a mystery, if we are willing to admit it. What is oxygen, which purifies the blood, and how does it purify the blood, the breath, and so forth? How does it do this? Who gave it this command, this power to perform such a task? Is that not a miracle? Do we not stand before it with our hands raised in wonder? We observe what happens, but we do not know how it happens.
Who set the human organism in motion? Who put the first blood into it? How is a human being sustained within his mother’s womb, yet after he comes out and is born, a little water put into his nose can kill him? How do these things happen? Are they not mysteries? Who joined his intestines together? Who made his heart and set it working? Who put all these things in place—the lungs and everything else? If you look at the anatomical model over there, where I am looking, your nous, your spiritual intellect, will be overwhelmed. There must be a craftsman. You cannot walk into an office, see a globe on a desk, for example, or a beautiful ornament, a fine clock, or something else, and when someone asks, ‘Who made this?’ answer, ‘No one made it; it just happened to appear here by chance.’ What would people think of us if we said it had appeared there by chance? It is absurd. With everything else, we say that someone made it: the clockmaker made the clock, the shoemaker made the shoe, someone else made the ship, and another made the aeroplane. There is always a craftsman. Only when it comes to this universe does man, because of his pride, refuse to acknowledge a Craftsman, to admit that Someone stands behind it all. He does not want to admit it.
So, then, we live within a miracle. But I believe that our question was not about the miracle of creation in general, or about the whole reality in which we live. Rather, it concerned what are commonly called the miracles of faith: healings of illnesses which people and physicians cannot cure, and other miracles connected with life and the body. I believe that this is the starting point of the question. I would therefore like to give you a few points about it. Of course, there are many people—especially educated people—who make everything depend upon what they can see through their microscope.
Whatever lies beyond that, they refuse to accept, even though they cannot give a satisfactory answer for what they do see. For in most cases we do not witness the miracle itself. We see the results, but we do not see the means by which the illness is changed. Something may be happening far away, for example, and here the sick person rises and begins to walk. The physicians may say, ‘I will tear up my diploma if this man survives,’ and yet he does survive, because he turned elsewhere and sought another power—a power which, for the most part, we do not see walking beside us. We see only its effects. I say this because we have such cases. If a person is willing to examine and consider all these things, he must trace them back to some source. Something is happening here. It is not a matter of mere chance, because the natural course is being changed. The ordinary course of nature says, ‘This is what will happen naturally,’ yet it does not happen. Who is it that intervenes and changes things? People generally demand answers to these questions, and they do not believe.
This is especially true of intellectuals when it comes to miracles. And yet, my dear friends, miracles do exist—not only in those days, but in our own day as well. Not all the Saints work miracles; not all have the gift of miracle-working. Others possess this gift, but only in particular kinds of cases. In accordance with the form of their martyrdom, they have received a corresponding gift of healing. If, for example, you go to Saint Barbara and ask for the healing of an eye condition which medical science cannot presently cure—because if medicine can cure it, you have no need to turn elsewhere—then you must also understand that it is very prideful to demand a miraculous healing
when an ordinary means of treatment is available. God does not grant such a miracle—not because He cannot, but so that you will not be carried away by pride and imagine that you are a Saint, that you have no need of physicians or medicine, and that you are some kind of superhuman being. He does not grant it. For you should know that science itself has been given by God. If you read the Wisdom of Solomon, you will see that God created the science of healing. He reveals its knowledge to people according to His dispensation, for the sake of faith and for the good of man. You will also read in the Wisdom of Sirach: ‘The Lord created the physician, for there is need of him.’ And there you will also read that ‘the Lord created medicines from the earth.’ Medicines come from the earth; physicians prepare them.
Physicians discovered how to combine the herbs that God placed within creation. He foresaw our needs and put them there. Physicians simply make the combinations, and these are what we call discoveries. What has a man discovered? He has found something that already existed. And the fact that a particular combination produces a particular result—all this was established by God. It lies within the created order of human life and operates within it, and man ought to make use of it. But when a person, out of pride, refuses to use these things, he will receive no miracle. When there is a genuine need, however—an illness of the eyes, as I said—you would not turn to Saint Barbara for healing, but to Saint Paraskevi, because of her martyrdom. They placed her in a vessel of boiling oil, yet she was not burned. The ruler who had ordered her to be placed in it thought that some deception or trickery was taking place.
So he said to her, ‘Throw some on me as well.’ She sprinkled him with it, and the hot oil blinded him; afterward, she healed him. Because of this martyrdom, she was given a special grace for ailments of the eyes. You would therefore go to the appropriate specialist, so to speak. Today we have ear, nose, and throat specialists, stomach specialists, haematologists, anaesthesiologists, and many other specialties. In the same way, the Saints have their own particular gifts in accordance with their martyrdoms. For nine years a woman appealed to our Most Holy Theotokos for the child she and her husband had been unable to have. The Most Holy Theotokos appeared to her and said, ‘For your childlessness, go to my mother, Saint Anna. My mother has been given that grace.’
This does not mean that the Most Holy Theotokos cannot also work such a miracle, for she has done so many times. But, so to speak, she sent the woman to the specialist. For a hernia, a disorder of the reproductive organs, a stomach ailment, and similar conditions, you would go to Saint Artemios, who endured such a martyrdom and received such grace that he can help those who suffer from these illnesses. If you have smallpox, for example, you would go to Saint Barbara. Each Saint has a particular gift. There are also certain Saints who are like entire medical centres, such as the modern Saint Nektarios of Aegina. Saint Nektarios of Aegina is a whole medical centre in himself. He has grace for every illness. Until now, those possessed by demons went only to Saint Gerasimos. Now they also go to Saint Nektarios of Aegina. And Satan says mockingly, ‘We already had the monk; now the bishop has been added as well.’ By ‘the bishop’ he means Saint Nektarios of Aegina.
Among the modern Saints to whom we can turn and through whom our doubts can be put to the test are Saint Nektarios of Aegina, Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, and Saints Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene at Thermi on Lesbos. There is also the Most Holy Theotokos of Tinos, the shrine at Spata nearby, and the Most Holy Theotokos of Malevi—well-known places where miracles occur. But Saint Nektarios of Aegina comes first. He is not only a Saint; he is also a wonderworker and a myrrh-gusher. This is the threefold distinction of Saint Nektarios of Aegina. Some are Saints but are not wonderworkers; others are wonderworkers but do not stream myrrh. Saint Nektarios of Aegina is a Saint, a wonderworker, and a myrrh-gusher. From my own personal experience
I know how true what I am telling you is, if you are willing to accept it as truth. Today, in my office, I have records of thirteen thousand miracles. For twenty years I have published a magazine called Saint Marina, and for about twelve years I have included accounts of miracles in it. In the present April issue I have reached number 3,087—3,087 miracles. And I have thirteen thousand miracles that have not yet been published. I cannot keep up when I publish twenty or thirty a month and a hundred more arrive. You cannot keep pace with the Saint. These miracles come not only from Attica, but from all over Greece and throughout the world. And they are extraordinary miracles—miracles before which physicians stand in awe and give serious attention. I have also published seven editions of my book entitled Nothing Is Incurable Through Saint Nektarios. One edition contained 180 miracles, another 200, the present one 220, and so forth. If all these accounts are included, twenty thousand miracles have passed through my hands alone, with names, addresses, the nature of each illness, and the kind of healing received. Are all these people mad? Are they all deluded? A few days ago I received the account of a physician from Eleusis who experienced a miracle through Saint Nektarios of Aegina.
His scientific training and his ego should not have allowed him to acknowledge it, yet they did. And could every case possibly have reached me? If someone goes to Aegina and looks through the book of miracles, his nous, his spiritual intellect, will be overwhelmed. If he looks at the votive offerings—the dedications we commonly call vows—he will see chains there. I was reading the inscription on one chain left by a man named Georgios Andrikopoulos from Patras. He had been possessed by a demon and was brought from Patras in chains. Before the ship had even anchored, the Saint came to him aboard the vessel, released him from the chain, took him by the hand, and said, ‘Go, my child, venerate at the shrine, and then return home.’ The man went and hung his chain there as an offering. Beneath it is a handwritten note which says, ‘Thank you, Saint, for coming and freeing me from my bonds.’
There is also a model of a ship connected with a merchant captain whose vessel was sinking near the Philippines. There seemed to be no escape: they had been caught in a typhoon and should not have survived. They called upon the Saint, and the Saint came and held the ship fast, stopping it there. When the storm ceased at noon the next day, the captain saw that they were directly before a rock, with no room to spare. He then asked whether anyone in the crew was from Aegina, because the Saint had told him, ‘When you return safely home, come to my house on Aegina so that we may meet.’ He asked the crew, and they told him that one man was indeed from Aegina. ‘Who is he?’ the captain asked. The man replied, ‘I also have an icon of our Saint,’ and showed him the icon he had brought from home for protection while he travelled to earn his living. When the captain returned, he had a golden model made, depicting the location and bearing the name of the ship and his signature beneath it. It hangs there to this day.
I do not know what more one could need to see. Outside, near the tree by the Saint’s tomb, I once found something resembling a saddle. Picture an animal’s saddle with the padding removed from inside, leaving only the wooden frame. A paralysed man had worn this contraption for I do not know how many years. When he went there, the Saint healed him, and the man hung it up and left it as a votive offering. When you go and see those things alone—I am not even directing you anywhere else—your nous, your spiritual intellect, will be overwhelmed. These offerings bear names; they are not anonymous or vague. If you go to Pachiana in Crete, where a church dedicated to Saint Nektarios of Aegina has been built, look at the votive offerings: the artificial legs and all the devices that once supported people, which have been piled up there.
You know, we tend to make a bargain with the Saints: ‘Do this for me, and I will bring you this. If you do not do it, I will bring you nothing. Grant my request, and I will bring you a candle as tall as I am. Grant it, and I will bring you a bottle of oil.’ That is how we speak. If our request is not granted, we bring nothing. We do not pay our Saint or give him anything unless he has done the work. So all those offerings correspond to something that happened. No one brings them in advance in the hope that a miracle will occur. The Saint receives them after the work is done, because the miracle happened and the promised offering is then paid. Yet some people do not fulfil their promises. Something like this happened recently, two years ago. One man—to move from one story to another—had a wife who was dying.
The physicians at Evangelismos Hospital had given up hope for her. So he made a vow to the Most Holy Theotokos of Tinos: ‘My Most Holy Theotokos, let my wife recover, and I will bring her to you there by boat.’ Astonishingly, the woman recovered. She got up and returned home. But did he take her there in a sailing boat? He had promised, ‘I will bring her to you on Tinos in a boat under sail.’ I suspect that he may have lost his courage and failed to fulfil his vow. God does not compel you to make a vow. You are the one who needs Him, just as I need Him. Pray—but why make a vow? From the moment you make one, you are bound by it; and if you do not fulfil it, you will be a liar. That is why people say, ‘Do not promise a candle to a Saint or a bread ring to a little child.’ If you promise the child a bread ring, he will cry and wait for you to take it out and place it in his hand. So it is with the Saint—not because the Saint needs it, as many people misunderstand and say, ‘Does the Saint need candles? Is he looking for personal gain?’ No, sir; you have misunderstood.
David says, ‘Make your vows and fulfil them.’ Pray for your request to be granted, and then give what you have vowed. No one forced you to make the promise. The Saint neither eats nor drinks, nor does his holiness rise or fall because of your faith or unbelief, or mine. I am the one who needs him; that is why I make the vow. Let me add another story, about a mother who vowed that if her sick child recovered, she would climb the bell tower on Tinos and throw the child down onto the paved courtyard. And do you know what happened? The child recovered. But afterward the mother would not go and throw the child down. ‘What if the child is killed?’ she thought. Whether it was her maternal attachment, her unbelief, her lack of faith, the devil, or something else, I do not know; but she did not go. Then one day, because the promise she had made kept troubling her inwardly, she went there to perform a test.
So she does the following: she takes a watermelon, climbs up the bell tower, and throws it down to see what will happen. Will the watermelon burst? If it does not burst, then her child will not be harmed either. And indeed, she threw the watermelon from there, and it fell to the ground like a ball without bursting. Then she took the child, went up, and threw the child down. But the child was killed. You cannot mock the Most Holy Theotokos and put her to the test, using a watermelon as your measure. She who had healed your child would also have revealed her miracle afterward, so that others could see it too—those of little faith who demand miracles. For, as you know, faith comes by hearing, not by sight. We have transferred faith to the realm of sight: “Unless I see, I will not believe.” But if you see, it is no longer faith; it is knowledge. And if you still do not believe even after you see...
We are headed for the madhouse. Christ does not accept a faith based on sight. Faith based on sight is a falling away into something worse. Do you remember what He said to Thomas? “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” He did not call Thomas blessed, even though Thomas cried out, “My Lord and my God.” But when did he say this? Only after he had put his finger into the print of the nails. Christ, of course, permitted this for the sake of all the modern-day Thomases who demand complete proof. I want you to know that a similar incident involving our Most Holy Theotokos took place at Proussos. When the Germans entered Greece, a German came with soldiers to burn down the monastery. The abbot stepped forward and said to the interpreter, “Tell this gentleman that here...”
“the house of the Mother of God, in whom they too believe, since they are Protestants. Miracles happen here. People come here and are healed of strange illnesses.” When the German hears this, he says, “If this is a place where miracles happen, let her perform a miracle for us too, and then we will not burn it down.” At once, the abbot—in all his naïveté—goes and takes the oil lamp of the Most Holy Theotokos, which was burning before her icon. It is a small cave, and inside it is the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, even though there is a large monastery complex outside. This icon came from Constantinople. Its golden vestment was made by Kolokotronis, who vowed it to the Most Holy Theotokos during the struggle for liberation. The abbot climbs the bell tower and throws it down...
Sure enough, he throws the oil lamp down onto the stone pavement. It falls and lands perfectly upright, with its flame still burning. It does not break. A German command orders the soldiers to shoulder their weapons and withdraw, and they all turn and leave. That evening, our Most Holy Theotokos appears to the abbot and says to him, “Tell me, who is in charge here—you or I? By what right did you take my lamp and throw it down from there? Whom did you ask? Did that man build this place? If I want it to burn, I have the power to build it again, because so much sin has taken place here. So many sinful people have been coming in and committing so many vile acts for so many years that I can bear it no longer...”
“I want the filth here to burn and be destroyed. Who are you to step in?” He drew back, stood there crestfallen, apologized in his own way, and so on. A few days later, the Germans returned, with no miracle intervening this time, and burned the monastery. It has since been rebuilt. But let me return from this brief digression, because I could speak to you about these things for two years; I know them firsthand. I now come to Saint Nektarios, who lived in modern times. You do not need to go to Capernaum, Tiberias, or Cana to see miracles. You can go just ten meters from here, as though taking a stroll, and see miracles there as well. A person can go and see the countless votive offerings, and in the book of miracles he will find names, addresses, and all the other details I have mentioned.
For each person, it records exactly where the pain was, who was suffering, and when the miracle took place. So when this whole succession of witnesses appears, bearing manifest miracles in their own bodies, a person is obliged—not even as a reasonable person or a Christian, but simply as an honest human being—to say, “This must somehow be true.” And yet, although we see so many miracles happening all around us, we refuse to admit that miracles truly exist, because they do not conform to our reason, and because we imagine that reason governs everything. No, Christianity is not irrational; Christianity is beyond reason—super-rational. It is something greater, you understand.
As I told you one day, I myself have received mercy through the Saint. After seventeen years of childlessness, he gave us a child, and he also helped during the delivery, when both mother and child were expected to die because it was a case of placenta previa. It happened miraculously, before our very eyes. Out of a sense of obligation to the Saint—how can I put it? Not as though I could repay him, but out of gratitude—I took the lead in having a church of Saint Nektarios built. It is not very large, of course; it is in the Byzantine style, and it is only three or four years old. If you go there and see how many vigil lamps there are, how many votive offerings shaped like legs, hands, heads, and so on, testifying to miracles that took place in that area, you will say, “What has happened here?”
These things are happening today. Miracles happen every day. So if someone wants to hear about them from a person living today, he will immediately see that something extraordinary is taking place. Go into the church of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou. One day, take a trip out here to Kato Kifisia, to Lykovrysi, and go inside. You will be stunned when you see all the votive offerings, especially the aids once used by people with disabilities: crutches, artificial legs, and braces that support the back. In fact, a whole truck could be filled with these testimonies to miracles, each bearing the person’s name, address, and the nature of the miracle. And if you go to Thermi on Mytilene, there you will learn of the martyrdom and the event that took place on Bright Tuesday...
It was Bright Tuesday of 1453, when Constantinople fell. That was when Saint Raphael and Saint Nicholas were slain and martyred, and when Irene, the local notable’s little daughter, was burned to death. These things came to light about five hundred years later. Following revelations, an intact Gospel book was found there, along with the tombs containing their relics, in the very places that had been revealed. The earthen jar in which they burned the nine-year-old girl named Irene was also found. And a bronze icon of Christ Pantocrator was found, which survives to this day. In fact, I myself have venerated a copy of it, when I was in Psychiko, in the home of a shipowner, a father by the name of...
The icon—the prototype of which is at Thermi on Lesbos. If you could see the miracles taking place there today, miracles happening in our own time, before which science has simply thrown up its hands, you would say, “Something is happening here.” Even if you do not wish to admit what it is, you will still have to say that something is happening. But now another question arises. Granted, Christ performed miracles—He was God. He opened tombs, gave sight to the blind, and cast out demons. But what about the others, the Apostles? Do you know what Christ said? “Will you not do the miracles that I do, and even greater ones?” Do you know that they would lay the sick along the road where Peter was to pass, so that his shadow might fall upon them?
Have you ever gone to Saint Gerasimos when his relics are brought out and carried in procession? Along the route, they place those afflicted by demons and those who are sick so that the relics may pass close by and bring them healing. This is exactly what they did in those days. Wherever Peter’s shadow fell as he passed, people arose healed, whatever illness they had been suffering from. Do you know that people hurried to obtain Peter’s handkerchief and Paul’s cloths, and that wherever they took them, miracles occurred? Do you know this? Do you know the account of the icon not made by human hands? The heretics tell us that we are idolaters because, they say, we venerate wood, icons, mosaics, paint, and so on. But do you know that Christ Himself gave us His image on a cloth twice? Did you know that?
Once before He was crucified, and once when He was about to be crucified. As He was going up the road of suffering, the Via Dolorosa, Veronica came out and wiped the sweat from His face, and He left the cloth with her. It still exists to this day. “If they should keep silent, the stones will cry out.” It still exists to this day. Those of you who go to Jerusalem and walk up the Via Dolorosa will see Veronica’s house on your left. That is the very place where she wiped the sweat from Christ’s face as He went up carrying His Cross in anguish. In gratitude, He left the image of His face upon her cloth, which remains to this day in the Roman Catholic Church. While our Christ was living on earth, a king named Abgar, in Edessa—not our Edessa, but the other one farther south—heard that someone in Israel was working extraordinary miracles. The man was a leper, and he sent one of his servants, who was a painter, and said to him...
“You are to meet Him there and give Him this letter as well.” And the king wrote a letter to Christ, though of course he did not know who He truly was. He wrote: “From what I hear about You, I am inclined to believe that You are either God or the Son of God. No mere man could work the kinds of miracles You work. I am also told that the Jews there want to destroy You because of who You are. They refuse to acknowledge You as anything at all—not even as a physician, much less as a king. As for me,” he said, “I rule a small state, a little kingdom. But if You wish, I will share it with You. So if You see that You can no longer remain there, come to me, and we shall reign together.” Do you see this man’s humility? Then he said to his servant, “Go there, and if you find Him...”
“Paint a portrait of Him for me,” he said, “and bring it back, so that I may see what He looks like—what sort of man He is who does such things.” So the man departed at the king’s command and went to Jerusalem. From what people told him, he learned roughly where Jesus could be found, and one day he arrived while Christ was speaking to the crowd. He sat at a distance, watching Him, and, being a painter, began to paint His portrait on a roof tile. But whenever he made a little progress, the appearance of Jesus would change, and he had to erase what he had done and begin again. He started over, painting part of the portrait as he looked at Him, and continued in this way; but before long, the appearance of Jesus changed once more. Christ spoke for an hour, and the painter tried perhaps ten times. In the end, he had produced nothing, because His appearance kept changing, and he could not capture His true likeness. When Christ had finished speaking...
Christ then called to him and told him to come over. “Come here,” He said. “Give Me your cloth.” The man gave Him the cloth, and Christ wiped His face with it. “Take it,” He said. His image remained imprinted upon it. This is the object known as the Holy Mandylion, which is usually depicted above the Holy Royal Doors: the Holy Mandylion of Christ. Our Church celebrates its feast on August 16, the day after August 15. There is an entire service recounting these historical events. In any case, Christ said to him, “Go to your master and tell him that for now he will be partially healed, but after some time I shall send one of My Apostles to heal him completely.” So the man took the cloth bearing the face of Jesus.
He went to King Abgar and gave it to him. When the king saw it, he venerated it, and eighty percent of his leprosy was cleansed. Only a small patch of leprosy remained on his head. Later, when the Apostles went out to preach after the Cross and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Thaddaeus went there, met the king, and baptized him. On the day of his Baptism, the remaining leprosy also fell away, and he came to believe. Historians say that Abgar then had the Holy Mandylion mounted in a large frame and placed above the city gate, so that all who entered or left the city might venerate it.
This Mandylion had taken the place of his own image, which had stood there as the image of the ruler of the region. Julian the Apostate later destroyed it. What are these things? Do they accord with nature? Do they accord with reason? They do not accord with nature or with reason. And amid these reflections, we may also ask: Who works the miracle? Is it the tomb? The relics? The soul of the Saint? Is it the Saint? Who works the miracle? No one apart from Him—Christ; every miracle is worked through Him. Neither the Most Holy Theotokos works miracles by herself, nor do the Saints. They all shine with light received from another. You flip a switch here, and a miracle happens there. This light comes on because of the electric current. The heating here...
You flip the switch, and it works by means of the electric current. The elevator rises by means of that same current. There is one cause behind it all. The moon and stars shine because of the sun; the moon receives its light from another. So it is with the Theotokos. Just as there is a material firmament here, so there is a spiritual firmament there. Here we have the sun, the moon, and the stars. There, Christ is the Sun, the Theotokos is the Moon, and the saints are the stars. They all act on behalf of Christ, and Christ acts through them. Unless Christ gives His authorization, nothing happens. There is a beautiful troparion that sheds light on this teaching. Addressing Saint Spyridon, for example, it says: “Glory to Him who has glorified you.”
“Glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.” The saint offers his intercession, whether through his relic, which possesses grace, or through his tomb, which possesses grace. When you venerate the tomb, you are venerating the saint himself, and that saint intercedes with Christ. If Christ sees that it would be for our benefit, that it should be granted, and that His compassion should prevail rather than His justice—for we could not endure His justice—then He gives the command for the gift of healing to be granted, and it is attributed to Saint Nektarios. Yet behind it all stands Christ, who gives the command in every case. And we ask our Most Holy Theotokos, especially now when the Paraklesis services are being celebrated, to receive our prayers and carry them to our Lord and our God.
“That through your intercessions He may have mercy on us.” But this basket, so to speak, goes up filled with people’s petitions, while their hearts do not go with it, and those petitions remain unanswered. Yet this, too, is an answer, because often, although we pray, we do not receive.
And when you do not receive what you asked for, know first of all that, in a sense, you have already received precisely because you did not receive it. It sounds paradoxical, of course, but it is true. Many times we ask for things that are not for our good. Once, a colonel was traveling from Komotini to Alexandroupoli to catch a flight, back when TAE Airlines still existed. When he saw that they were running late, he kept urging...
pressing the soldier who was driving to go faster.
“Faster! Drive faster, faster, so we can make it.” “We are going to crash, General,” the soldier told him. “We’ll be killed.” “Keep going,” he replied, “and the Most Holy Theotokos will help us. Go on.” So he drove on and on. Eventually, one of the tires failed. “I told you we were going to get ourselves killed.” They stopped, and the colonel began blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos. They missed the flight, and the plane departed. Then there was a great commotion. He began hurling abuse at the soldier, calling him “a damned blasphemer and a lazy good-for-nothing,” “an animal,” and so forth. About fifteen minutes later, they still had not repaired the tire. The colonel wanted to get to the airport to sort out the tickets, since they had not used them, and to find some excuse so that he would not lose them, because he also had tickets for his family. Then a telegram arrived saying that the plane had crashed somewhere here in Attica. At that, he was struck speechless, and the stationmaster turned to him and said:
“General, I do not think this miracle happened for your sake, because I heard you blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos. I think the miracle happened for the sake of those two little children you have with you.” What he had regarded as an obstacle—and I do not know how he could regard it that way, when he had stooped to insulting the Most Holy Theotokos so disgracefully—had actually been for his benefit. Why, then, should God grant what you ask? Because He loves you and you are good? But it is precisely because you are good that He often protects you. I knew two sisters. One of them desperately begged Christ to get her a position at the Bank of Greece. Both girls were devout. They offered the Paraklesis and made all kinds of supplications, but there was no answer at all. The older sister would say, “How do you know what He is protecting you from, my dear Sophia?” Her name was Sophia. “How do you know what He is protecting you from by not sending you there?”
“Are you saying that to me? My mind works at four hundred miles an hour! If I go there, I’ll do good. I’ll earn money, I’ll give to others, I’ll help people,” and so forth. Many of us say such empty things. In any case, nothing happened, and she would sit there crying. Her sister told her, “Be careful, or some harm may come to you. Do not try to force the Lord. Let Him act as He wills, if it is for your good.” Three or four years later, however, the bank hired her, and she finally obtained the position. And what was the result, my dear ladies and gentlemen? Do you know? She destroyed the manager’s family. She fell in love with her manager, and he abandoned four children and a beautiful wife, who became the victims of it all. He went off with her, and she too ruined her life, all for the sake of breaking up an entire family. Christ had seen her and was saying, “You are not suited for that place. Go somewhere else. Wait; it is not the end of the world.”
Nevertheless, we try to force Him. And all those who have tried to force Christ to grant their request, without leaving Him free to answer as He wills, have received the opposite of what they hoped for. Many times, then, God does not work a miracle because we have not prepared the proper vessel. A miracle needs a vessel, and the greater the miracle you ask for, the larger and purer that vessel must be. The vessel into which the miracle enters is a person’s faith. Why does the Most Holy Theotokos work miracles on Tinos but not in your home? Is it the icon that works the miracle? Is it the wood? Is it the place, or is it the Most Holy Theotokos? That is another question. It is the Most Holy Theotokos who works the miracle. Why, then, does she work miracles there but not at home? Because at home your faith is alpha, but there it is omega.
In your home it is still alpha, while there it becomes omega. Perhaps you have crossed the sea, though you had no money. Perhaps you vowed to go there and crawl on all fours from the harbor all the way up, humbling yourself before everyone. All these things increase your faith until it becomes great enough to contain the miracle you are asking for. That is the reason. But if you shut yourself in your room, sit down, and say, “I will not get up from here until You give me an answer, yes or no,” then you can receive your miracle right there in your own home. Pieces of wood do not work miracles by themselves. Icons do possess a certain grace of their own, of course, because they are often connected with other miracles. The icon on Tinos, for example, had lain buried for I do not know how many years. Then the newly revealed Saint there, a nun whose name escapes me—Pelagia—
saw in a dream where it was, and they went and uncovered it. The people immediately developed reverence for an icon that had itself been revealed and brought to light, and a whole tradition quickly grew around it. Another example is the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of Iviron, known as the Portaitissa. During the time of iconoclasm it left Constantinople and came over the sea to the Holy Mountain. The monks went out in a boat to retrieve it, but it would not allow them to take it. The message was given: “The one who is outside will come.” Paul had been a hardened criminal, even a murderer, but he had repented and wept over his sins. Apparently, to show him that his metanoia, his repentance, had been accepted, it was said that he was the one who should come. Walking upon the sea, he retrieved the icon, which remains there to this day. We often hear people say, “This icon was painted by the Evangelist Luke, and that is why it works miracles.” I do not know what your view is, but I would like to say a few words about this.
Concerning the icons of Saint Luke the Evangelist, there are not as many as people claim. Pay attention: someone says, for example, that the icon at Voulkano is by the Evangelist Luke; another says the icon on Tinos is by the Evangelist Luke. No. It may be derived from one of Luke’s icons, but it is not itself the work of Luke. Luke was both a physician and a painter. Now listen to the history. There are three icons by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. One is at Kalavryta, in the Monastery of the Great Cave. It is a relief made from wax and mastic, and the Theotokos holds Christ on her right arm. There are only a few icons in which she holds Christ on the right. The second is in Kykkos Monastery, where Makarios once lived. It is known as the Kykkotissa and is kept veiled.
The third is at Soumela, on Mount Vermio. These three are icons of the Most Holy Theotokos. From them, copies have been made in various places—one hundred and twenty here, seventy there, one hundred and fifty elsewhere. Those icons were made from these prototypes; they are not the prototypes themselves. These are the three that have been preserved to this day in a miraculous manner. The Monastery of the Great Cave has burned five or six times, and nothing else remained. Nevertheless, although this icon is made of wax, it did not burn and remains to this day, just as the other two icons also remain to this day. For the sake of the story, let me tell you how these icons came to be. While the Apostle and Evangelist Luke was alive, and while the Most Holy Theotokos was still living...
he visited her in the house where she was staying with John the disciple. That house still exists in Jerusalem today. He asked whether she would grant him permission to paint her portrait. And what happened?
“Wait,” she told him. A short while later, the Archangel Gabriel, who always ministered to her, arrived carrying three wooden panels and said to him, “Take these three panels and do as you see fit. You have my blessing.” Luke took them and left, but he wondered to himself, “Why did she give me three panels instead of one? I only want to paint one portrait; am I supposed to paint all three?” Thank you.
So, picturing her as he usually saw her, he began to paint. When he had finished, he timidly presented the icon to her so that she might see it. “I have not done anything very remarkable,” he said. “I did what I could; please forgive me,” along with all the customary courtesies. The Most Holy Theotokos looked at the icon and said, “It is beautiful, and your effort was sincere, but there is one thing you failed to notice: am I alone?” He froze, because he had painted her alone, with her hands raised in prayer. This is the icon now at Soumela, at Kastania on Mount Vermio. “Am I alone? Is there not someone with me?” She meant the Lord. So he gathered up his things.
“Please forgive me,” he said, and left, taking the icon with him. Then he painted another icon, this time with the Lord. He brought it back to her, and when she saw it, she said, “It is beautiful, and your work is good, but there is one detail you failed to notice. You have placed the Child, my Lord, on the right. You should have placed Him on the left.” Again he froze and took this icon away as well. This is the right-handed icon at Kalavryta. He had painted the first in colors, the second with wax and mastic, and the third with mosaic tesserae. So he made the third icon properly, with the Lord on her left, as we usually see the Most Holy Theotokos holding our Lord.
And so we now have these three icons. The three wooden panels had each fulfilled their purpose. She had foreseen what needed to happen, and thus these three icons came into being. When she saw them, she spoke these words: “May the grace of Him who was born of me, my Lord and my God, be with them.” And indeed, they have passed through fire and sword and have been miraculously preserved. You may read the historical accounts of how the icon at the Great Cave, above Aigio near Kalavryta, came to be there. You may also read the story of the icon of Soumela and how it came from Mount Mela in Pontus to its present home here, as well as the historical accounts...
of the monk who, at the command of the Most Holy Theotokos, went and brought the icon to Kykkos. Do you know why the monastery is called Kykkos and how it received its name? As the monk carried this wonderworking icon of the Most Holy Theotokos up the mountain, the trees along the road bowed down as the Lady and Queen passed by, while birds on either side sang in their own way. One of them even spoke in a human voice, saying: “Kykkos, Kykkos is the mountain; a monastery shall arise, a golden Lady shall enter, and never shall she depart.” And indeed, the icon remains there miraculously to this day. Only once did a Turkish man impiously attempt to uncover it, and he was struck down before it.
I do not know what more to tell you about these matters. Unless a person believes, he will not see a miracle. In difficult moments, prayer can miraculously resolve every human difficulty. A hydrogen bomb could fall nearby and fail to detonate, even though, according to every principle of science, it should explode. “In the name of Jesus Christ, do not explode.” Perhaps this sounds strange to you. “In the name of Jesus Christ, do not speak.” And he did not speak. How did that happen? Did not the angel say to Zacharias, “You will remain silent until all these things have taken place”? And he remained mute and deaf until Elizabeth gave birth; then, on the day the child was circumcised, his mouth was opened. All these things, then, should in some way strengthen us...
in our conviction that something is indeed taking place all around us. When there is a real need, let us also ask—not that we may put God to the test and demand a miracle, no—but that He may increase our faith, as happened with Thomas.

Τα υπάρχοντα ποιος τα έφτιαξε; Ούτε έγιναν ούτε δημιουργήθησαν; Και σήμερα, που θεωρείται η επιστήμη ότι έχει πολύ προχωρήσει, απλώς, όπως σας είπα και προχθές, ανακαλύπτει νόμους που κάποιος άλλος τους έφτιαξε. Κάποιος άλλος τους θέσπισε, δεν τους έφτιαξε ο άνθρωπος. Όσα φτιάξαμε εμείς, τόσο φτιάξαν και αυτοί, οι προαπελθόντες. Όλα τα βρήκαμε εδώ. Μόνον ανακαλύψαμε τους νόμους μεταξύ των και, με βάση αυτά, αποκαλύπτονται καθημερινώς σε εμάς πράγματα, μυστήρια που μπορούσαμε να τα ανακαλύψουμε και χθες και προχθές. Υπάρχουν όμως, υπάρχουν. Δεν μπορεί ο άνθρωπος να πει ότι τα έφτιαξε αυτός. Δεν τα έφτιαξε αυτός. Κοιτάξτε, όπως ξέρετε και από τη φυσική, πόσο είναι το νερό εν σχέσει με τη γη. Ποιος το έφτιαξε το νερό;
την εικόνα, η οποία, το πρωτότυπο, υπάρχει στη Θερμή της Μυτιλήνης. Αν δείτε τα θαύματα τα οποία γίνονται εκεί σήμερα, σύγχρονα θαύματα, όπου η επιστήμη έχει σηκώσει τα χέρια της επάνω, θα πείτε ότι εδώ κάτι γίνεται. Αν δεν θέλετε να παραδεχτείτε ότι γίνεται, θα πείτε ότι κάτι γίνεται. Τώρα εδώ μέσα έρχεται κάτι τι άλλο. Καλά, ο Χριστός έκανε θαύματα, ήτο Θεός. Άνοιξε τάφους, έφτιαξε μάτια, εξέβαλε δαιμόνια. Καλά, οι άλλοι όμως, οι Απόστολοι; Ξέρετε τι έχει πει ο Χριστός; «Δεν θα κάνετε εσείς», λέει, «τα θαύματα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ, αλλά και μεγαλύτερα;» Γνωρίζετε ότι εβάζανε τους αρρώστους στον δρόμο που θα περνούσε ο Πέτρος, για να πέσει ο ίσκιος επάνω των;
Πάτε ποτέ στον Άγιο Γεράσιμο, όταν γίνεται η έξοδος του λειψάνου, που το βγάζουν, κάνουν τη λιτανεία, που βάζουν καθ’ οδόν τους δαιμονισμένους και τους αρρώστους να περάσει το λείψανο από κοντά, να τους δώσει την ίαση. Αυτό τούτο έκαναν αυτοί τότε. Και όπου περνούσε ο ίσκιος του Πέτρου, οι άνθρωποι σηκώνονταν από οποιοδήποτε νόσημα και αν έπασχον. Γνωρίζετε ότι έτρεχαν να πάρουν το μαντήλι του Πέτρου, τα χειρομάντιλα του Παύλου, τα οποία όπου τα πήγαιναν θαυματουργούσαν; Το γνωρίζετε; Γνωρίζετε μια ιστορία αναφορικώς με την αχειροποίητο εικόνα; Αυτή που μας λένε οι αιρετικοί ότι είμαστε ειδωλολάτρες εμείς, λέει, γιατί προσκυνάμε ξύλα, λέει, και εικόνες και ψηφιά και χρώματα κλπ. Γνωρίζετε ότι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός έδωσε την εικόνα του σε μαντήλι δυο φορές; Το ξέρετε;
