Summary

Job’s account of the angels praising God at creation shows that the spiritual world existed before the material world and that Satan had already fallen when humanity entered Paradise. Through the Cross and Resurrection, Christ transformed suffering into glory, defeated death, and came to destroy the works of Satan. The example of Saints Cyprian and Justina teaches that demonic power cannot overcome a person firmly united to Christ through prayer, fasting, repentance, and sacramental life.

In a talk a few days ago, we said something about the devil. We touched on how old he is, and a discussion arose about it. So this evening I would like to say a few words to shed some light on the matter. Many people doubt that Satan exists. But I am not speaking about those who doubt Satan’s existence. I am speaking about those who do not doubt that he exists, but question his age and perhaps wonder in good faith: How can anyone calculate and determine approximately how old Satan is?

The One who gives us clear dates in these matters is God Himself. Nothing has been hidden from man; the trouble is that man does not study and does not read. He reads everything unnecessary, but not what is essential, and that is precisely why he does not know. If he would only study, he could discover approximately how old Satan is.

It is recorded in the Book of Job, in the Old Testament—specifically in chapter 38—that when God was creating the earth, His angels were praising Him. What do we learn from this?

The spiritual world existed before the material world. That is the first point to remember. When God completed creation, Holy Scripture tells us, and had made everything—when He had prepared the dwelling perfectly—

He made His cherished creature, man, placed him within it, and said to him: “All this is yours. It was made for you; enjoy it. Only be careful: do not touch this one thing, because it is dangerous, and if you touch it, you will be burned. Till it and keep it.” Keep it? Are Eve and I not the only ones here?

If a man is told to keep watch, it means: “Be careful; guard yourself.”

In other words: “Quietly now—be watchful.” This means that someone else was there, someone who must not be allowed to enter. Do not listen to him; do not let him gain power over you. The command to “till it and keep it” shows that the Fall had already taken place in the spiritual world—the fall of Satan, who went from being an angel to becoming the devil, from being radiant to becoming dark.

So when man was created, the devil already existed. And the proof is that only a few days later, there he was in Paradise, speaking with Eve—and the whole world knows the result. Satan’s age, then, is approximately the same as the age of mankind. How old is man? Millions of years, as the world says? Holy Scripture, however, says that from the creation of the world until Christ came into the world there were 5,508 years. Add 1,979 years, and we arrive at roughly 7,500 years. That is how old Satan is. If we take ten years away from him or add ten years, it makes little difference. At any rate—

the figure is approximate. This is how we Orthodox calculate it, and we know that he exists. We know that at first he was an angel. We know that, in his pride, he sought to set his throne above the throne of God, as the Holy Spirit tells us through the Prophet Isaiah. And so he fell; from radiant he became dark, and now he is the enemy both of God and of God’s possession. Man is God’s possession.

That is the date and the approximate reckoning we can give for Satan’s age. Consequently, man must understand that he is dealing with an experienced adversary—a person of immense experience, with 7,500 years of cunning behind him. He is no naïve fifteen-year-old girl in a miniskirt who knows nothing of life. He has devoured multitudes. He has brought down great men, ascetics, patriarchs, kings, and prophets. What has he not done! When man is not watchful... But when man is watchful, Satan is always put to shame.

Let me take this opportunity to answer those who ask: “Why did God make the devil?” They do not want him around; he troubles them, and they want to be left in peace. But God did not make him a devil. God made the one who became the devil as an angel; He did not create a devil. As our Christ says, bitter and sweet water do not flow from the same spring. Could God make both evil things and good things? Everything He makes is good. But through his own freedom, that angel became evil. And now God takes that evil, makes use of it, and brings good out of it for man. The next time you go to a pharmacy, ask them, “Do you keep poisons here?” They will tell you that they do, and indeed that they keep them in special cabinets so they will not be mixed up by mistake when a medicine is being prepared, lest someone be poisoned.

Ask them, “What are you doing with these poisons here? They are deadly.” They will answer, “We use them in medicines.” In certain doses, poison becomes medicine. If man can turn poison into saving medicine, why should God not be able to make the devil serve as medicine for man? And I ask you: If there were no devil, would there be any Saints? Do not listen to foolish people who say, “I want to become holy, but others will not let me.” The very people who will not let you are the ones through whom you will become holy. Without the evil man, the good man is not revealed. Among the wicked, the good man will be revealed. Among the deceitful, the virtuous man will be revealed. Among the unjust, the righteous man will be revealed.

In the presence of the thief, the honest man will be revealed; in the presence of the dishonorable, the chaste man will be revealed. All these Saints whose icons surround us did not become holy because they were Saints from their mothers’ wombs. They fought against Satan, and through that struggle Satan became the occasion of their sanctification. Even the glory that Christ possesses came through what the devil did to Him: he raised Him upon the Cross, and the Cross was His glory. Have you ever read John? Read chapter seven and see. It says there that the Holy Spirit had not yet come. And why? “Because Christ had not yet been glorified.” That is, He had not yet been crucified. The Gospel calls the Cross His glory. But do we want to learn these things? We want an easy road to the Kingdom of Heaven. We want to satisfy every desire of the flesh, pursue all our own interests, follow the world and its fashions, serve our ego—and still enter the Kingdom of Heaven. But that road does not lead to the Kingdom of Heaven.

God, then, did not create Satan as Satan. But God makes use of him and permits him to tempt man. Christ Himself was tempted by Satan. One evening, I believe, I spoke to you about Satan’s temptation of our Christ during the forty days and forty nights on the Mount of Temptation. Christ fasted for forty days to overcome the flesh. He gave the proper answer to the temptation of the world, and the proper answer to the temptation of self-interest. For these are man’s three enemies. Man has three enemies, but he neither watches for them nor recognizes them. The first is his own flesh. The flesh of man, which we feed and pamper, is the soul’s foremost enemy. The soul and the flesh are like a dog and a cat: whatever benefits the soul, the body does not want.

And whatever the body wants does not benefit the soul. Whoever obeys the flesh loses his soul. Man is called to struggle against his flesh and say to it, “No. You will have what is proper for you, not whatever you desire.” Yet, sadly, it is deeply rooted in man to do what his flesh wants and what his ego wants. I remember something involving our youngest child, whom God gave us after seventeen years without children. When he was two years old and had only just begun to speak, I was in Portaria near Volos, and I told him, “No, you must not do that; it is not right.” Do you know what he answered? “Not what is right—what I want!” I stood there looking at him. “But what about what is right? Why should this not be done?”

He said to me again, “Not what is right—what I want! If I want it, what do you mean I must not?” It is in our blood, as though injected beneath the skin. Through the flesh, man desires things opposed to his salvation. Woe to the man who listens to his flesh, for the Fathers call the flesh an ant-lion. At one moment it acts like a beast, like a lion, and at another it acts like a tiny ant. If you decide to fast, it will say, “How will you manage? You cannot possibly cope. Put just a little oil in your food—go on.” Then it pretends to be half-dead.

But it is a beast, a fox, and a viper. Man does not know it. God—Christ Himself—fasted for forty days and forty nights. Who are you, wretched man?

Do you dare to say that fasting is nothing and that it is unnecessary? When Christ prays continually for forty days and forty nights, who are you, wretched man, who have not said even once in an entire day, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”? Where are you going? What path are you walking? Do you understand? We do not pay attention to these things, and we do not know them. That is how Satan catches us in his net. This master craftsman has set traps for multitudes of people. Indeed, in our time Satan’s work is raging in full force through all the heresies and superstitions and through all the... What can I tell you, and how can I list it all? Hidden beneath all these things, he works deceitfully against Christ.

Christ, then, did not make Satan what he is. Indeed, Christ came into the world to destroy the works of Satan. That is why Christ came into the world: to undo the works of Satan. Christ came into the world to abolish death, whose author is Satan. Satan brought death into the world. “Through the envy of the devil,” Solomon says, “death entered the world.” And Christ came to die Himself in order to give life to man. By the death of Jesus, He trampled down death and gave life to man. Consequently, we owe Christ abundant thanks and deep gratitude for this work, which He accomplished and continues to accomplish in His Church. For if Satan did not exist, what need would there be for these churches?

Why would we come to venerate the icons and the Saints? To raise the Saints higher? You could burn a million tons of candles before the Holy Unmercenaries, and you would not raise a Saint even a single inch higher. He has already reached the place to which he journeyed. I am benefited; the Saint is not. Nor does he descend from the place he has attained. That is his state beyond the grave. As he prepared his bed, so he fell asleep. He struggled and was justified. It is I who need him. What purpose, then, do churches serve, and what role do priests have? What are all the things they do? What are the Divine Liturgies? What is Baptism? What are metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession? What is Holy Unction? What is the blessing of water? What are all these things? They all destroy the works of the devil.

This is because Satan exists and enters the human soul. Do you know how Satan comes into the world? Through the soul of every person who is born. Every person who is born brings the devil within his soul as well. That is why, in the old folk theology, according to whether the child was a boy or a girl, they called it a little dragon, male or female. They did not call it a “baby,” as they do now, or a “little angel,” as foolish mothers do today. An unbaptized child—and they call it a little angel! Have you ever gone to hear the exorcisms that the priest reads when the child is about to be baptized? Have you gone to hear the struggle? And if the priest truly understands what he is doing,

you would see how he wrestles with the devil to drive Satan out of the child’s heart: how he breathes upon the child, how he exorcises it, how on the day of Baptism he serves notice of eviction, so to speak, in order to cleanse it. Its little soul is dark; it comes dead, a living corpse. That is why it is buried. The baptismal font is a tomb. Baptism is not merely about becoming godparents, nor is it an occasion for some foolish and unbelieving godmother to display herself over the holy font. That is not what it is. This is a Mystery and a struggle against Satan, so that Satan may come out of the child and its soul may be made new—from a soul like black coal into a soul glowing red. That is why they immediately take the child and bring it to receive Holy Communion. Baptisms were not held in the afternoon, at midday, or at any other time, as though they were social events, the way we have made them today. They took place in the morning, during Matins, and the newly illumined remained there until the words, “With fear of God,”

and then received Holy Communion. For the purpose of Baptism is to cleanse us from the works of the devil, if we are adults, and from ancestral sin, and to unite us with Christ, with the Holy Chalice, with Holy Communion. That was its purpose. So then, if Satan did not exist, why would the priest be there, and what place would Baptism have? If Satan did not exist, what place would Holy Confession have? Through the priest, by the command of Jesus, a person is loosed from his sins. Someone falls ill. Who brings about illness? Satan brings about illness. God cannot be tempted by evil. God instituted Holy Unction so that the suffering person, the sick person, might rise again. Why does the priest sanctify the water and perform the blessing of water, which you, the housewife, receive, and which I receive,

and then take home and begin sprinkling throughout the house? What am I doing when I sprinkle it? I am serving the devil notice of eviction from the rooms, so that he may leave the house. This is the purpose of the blessing of water brought into the home. Someone may ask, “When the blessed water enters the house, does the devil leave?” The blessing of water—yes, if the blessing of water is present in the house and the One who sanctifies is present in the heart, then the devil leaves. But if there is only blessed water and the One who sanctifies the heart—Christ—is absent, then the devil does not leave. The devil is not afraid of crosses or incense. He is afraid of Christ. Many people send someone to the Church on the first day of the month to bring back blessed water, yet they have no relationship with the Church. They neither confess nor receive Holy Communion; they do not have children, they steal, dishonor others, live unlawfully, and hold parties,

while cousins, godparents, and relatives among them engage in incest and the like; and yet they still take blessed water, including the water from Theophany. What comes of that? Has the devil left? On the contrary, he has settled comfortably among them. No one there is going to serve him notice of eviction. Certainly, there must be a cross outwardly, but the Crucified One must also be in the heart. All these things, then—the Church, the clergy, the Mysteries, and the Holy Spirit who descends and accomplishes them—exist because the devil exists: to destroy the works of Satan and establish the grace of God, so that the person may advance spiritually and be saved. That is their purpose. Unfortunately, people do not understand these things very well. That is why we see today that people make less use of the Church, the Cross, and grace than they do of superstition.

We do not depend upon the Church, the Cross, grace, Holy Communion, antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy—or the blessing of water for our well-being. Instead, we make our good fortune depend on other circumstances. You see how people suffer. On the first day of the year, for example, or the first day of the month, they lock the door and refuse to open it. They peer through the shutters to see who the lucky person will be who comes first, so that they may open the door and have him bring them good luck. If it is not someone whom they believe carries good luck, they will not open the door and remain shut inside all day. Meanwhile, the devil has taken up residence within. Do you believe in God, or do you believe in the devil? Do you understand? Likewise, shopkeepers and merchants watch to see who will be their first customer of the morning. They examine this carefully. “But it proves true for me,” they say. And it will always seem true to you when you think that way.

You do not believe in Christ. When you entered your shop that morning, you did not make the sign of the Cross and say, “My Christ, I entrust this to You.” And even if you did say it, when the first customer arrived, you lied to him about the price. You cheated him in the weight and cheated him in the measure. Consequently, Christ departed and did not help you, and everything went wrong. Then you imagined that the first customer was to blame, as though your happiness depended on who came first to buy from you. Others seek knowledge not from the providence and love of God, but from a card reader, a fortune-teller reading coffee grounds, or a medium, to learn exactly how their affairs stand. They go to such people, question them, and place their trust in them. They keep the Church merely for exchanging festive greetings. They keep it for Pascha, to receive the light of the Resurrection outside the church, or to take the blessed water of Theophany outside the church. Ah, these people!

Outwardly they display the appearance of blessing and piety, but inwardly Satan possesses and governs them. They live in fear, trembling because of all these superstitions. And what especially torments humanity today is black magic. Husbands and wives are bound by spells; children and young women are bound, wasting away in this world. Some suffer physically, some cannot have children, some live amid conflict and constant quarrelling in their homes and have separated—all because of spells cast upon them by others. Yet those who cast the spells are themselves bewitched, because if I go to a sorceress and have a spell cast against someone, I do it with Satan’s help. Christ does no such things.

I will use the devil to harm someone against whom I want revenge. I take my revenge upon that person bodily. He may separate from his wife, or she from her husband; she may be unable to have children, become ill, or waste away like soap or a candle, according to the measure of the demonic evil placed into the spell. But at the same time, you too are held by the devil as his instrument—his instrument. Woe to the person who serves the devil in this world. Woe to the person who acts as the devil’s agent in this world. And I will take this opportunity to say a little more about something that often happens when a spiritual father asks, “My child, do you ever blaspheme?” A woman may answer, “No, Father. I only say ‘the one who should stay far from here’ now and then,” meaning the devil.

“The one who should stay far from here.” So she is not blaspheming? And the priest, only half understanding what is happening, says, “You should stop that; it is not good.” If she said that she blasphemed the Most Holy Theotokos, the priest would take a firm stand. You cannot blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos. If she blasphemed Christ or the Precious Cross, you cannot blaspheme them either. “Oh, I only mean the one who should stay far from here.” Examine the matter carefully. Consider what this expression really means. Do you know what it means? What is someone doing when he sends another person to the devil? He is not insulting the devil. This is what the devil has managed to accomplish. The person does not curse the devil with the same filthy words used against the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, or the Cross. No. He sends his child to the devil. He sends his mother-in-law to the devil, his neighbor to the devil, even his car to the devil.

He is wishing for the devil’s kingdom to grow. Do you understand this? If I blaspheme the Lord, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Precious Cross, or God with that word you all know, then I am insulting them. But when I invoke Satan in this way, I am wishing him well; I am not insulting Satan. So the question, “My child, do you blaspheme?” is poorly put. The question should be, “My child, do you ever send anyone to the devil?” And when he says, “Yes, I do,” then seize him, sir, take hold of him, and give him a ten-year canon of penance. “Why so much? Why?” Why did Christ come into the world? Why was Christ crucified on Great and Holy Friday? Why was the Most Holy Theotokos pierced with anguish? Why did God do all these things? To take the human person away from the devil—precisely where this man is sending him.

Otherwise, all of this is brought to nothing. The person who sends another to the devil is an agent of Satan. He desires the Kingdom of God to diminish and the kingdom of the devil to increase. He is Satan’s agent in the world. He rejects Christ, rejects Great and Holy Friday, rejects the Most Holy Theotokos, rejects everything—he blasphemes it all through those words. Yet how is a person to grasp this? “I only say ‘the one who should stay far from here’ now and then.” He sends his own child to the devil. Christ bent down to take that child to Himself, yet the man does not care that Christ was crucified. Christ might say, “My child, I was crucified so that he would not go to the devil. Do you not even respect My Cross?” You respect nothing—nothing at all. In this way, Satan has managed to conceal even this blasphemy against the Holy Trinity,

against the Most Holy Theotokos, against our holy Church, and against all the Mysteries of our Church. All these things exist to take the human person away from the devil, yet I send him straight back there, and without realizing it I blaspheme everything. Do you understand? Think, then, what a master craftsman Satan is. Now pay attention to one detail. If Satan has gained power over any of you through the things I am speaking about—and these are not the only ones; my nous, my spiritual intellect, cannot even conceive how many there are—I have written them down, as I told you, in a book containing more than six hundred subjects. Repent and go to Holy Confession. Ask God for mercy, release the people you have bound, and live close to Christ, so that nothing can take hold of you.

Someone says, “They have cast a spell on me.” Yes, because you first cast a spell upon yourself. “But how did I cast a spell upon myself?” By having no relationship at all with Christ. Long before this, you had left yourself exposed to the devil. That is why someone working with the devil—or several people acting out of malice, jealousy, hatred, envy, self-interest, or the evil eye—found an opportunity to bind you. You are the executioner of your own immortal soul. That other person is not ultimately to blame. For an example, read the life of the great sorcerer who became Saint Cyprian. He was a master teacher of magic. See how a young woman, Saint Justina, defeated him because she was a Christian.

He could not bewitch her. He could not gain power over her and hand her over to the man who desired her. Why did he fail? Because she had our Christ. This led Saint Cyprian to understand that Satan’s powers are weaker than the power of Christ. He abandoned his art of magic, gathered his books, burned them in the city square, became a Saint, and suffered martyrdom. Today we have his prayer. Because he knew all Satan’s devices, having worked with him for years, Saint Cyprian teaches us many things about how Satan works against the human person and seeks his harm. You will not, then, be able to bewitch me. Magic would be brought to nothing, not if evil people ceased to exist,

but if good people were truly good. How can a spell fail to seize you when you have no protection? Do not merely take out life insurance so that, if a car kills you, others will receive the payout. Insure yourself with Christ, in Christ’s treasury, in Christ’s Church. Have a relationship with Christ. Attend church, confess, have and raise your children, fast, and exercise self-restraint during the fasts, Great Lent, and the other fasting seasons. Do not live in impurity and carnality. Pray, hold the true faith, do not listen to the world, and do not follow fashion. Woman, do not make yourself a god or try to become a man; do not turn yourself into a man. Then let Satan come and try to bewitch you through anyone he chooses. Let him gather all the sorcerers in the world—he will be unable to do anything. Read this heartening book about Saint Cyprian.

See how fiercely Satan struggled with him in order to gain control over the young Justina and hand her over to a certain nobleman who desired her, as I said earlier. Yet he failed. Consequently, if Satan gains power over us and we fall into his hands—if he bewitches our daughter or our son, as happens in some of our homes—then, if we have a relationship with Christ, Satan cannot even put his little foot through the door. He comes as far as the door, looks through the window, and leaves. He cannot enter. The sorcerer or sorceress, then, is not the whole cause. Certainly, they are in Satan’s hands and worthy of the fate they have chosen. But what am I doing? Why do I not secure myself? We have many such cases, and some people are lost through their own fault,

while others suffer because of the malice of other people, but also because of their own foolishness, since they had no relationship with Christ. Let me add something else, since it has arisen naturally in our discussion. Many people, when they find themselves in such difficult circumstances, do not follow the saving and secure path shown by the Church. Instead, they follow Satan’s art once again. What happens? A certain man or woman went to a sorceress and had another person bewitched. Then the bewitched person goes to a sorceress as well, asking her to undo the spell. Someone went to the devil to bind a person, and now that person goes back to the devil to be set free.

Will the devil do that for you freely, without payment? Will he grant you such a favor? Since he granted the first person’s request and bound someone, how will he now release that person for you without receiving something in return? He will take something in exchange for releasing him. Should we leave the young woman bound? Should we abandon the person who is wasting away? What should we do? I tell you that we must not abandon them. But we must not go to a sorcerer or sorceress. It may be easy to pay one thousand, two thousand, five thousand, or ten thousand drachmas. Instead, we must go to the Church. The Church acknowledges that spells exist. She has prayers against magic and she has exorcisms. But the Church requires fasting; the Church requires metanoia, repentance; the Church requires Holy Confession. And we are not even willing to do what the Church requires, because it means causing discomfort to our ego and our flesh.

So we take the easy path: we go to the sorceress, pay ten thousand drachmas, and she does what we want and frees our loved one. Yes, she has freed him. Satan agreed to withdraw and release the person he had bound. But although he released the body, he took the soul. I do not want that, because the Church releases and saves both body and soul. That is the difference. If I go to the Church and the spells are broken, I will be freed both spiritually and bodily. But if I go to a sorceress or sorcerer to undo the spells, I may be released bodily. I may find the magical objects hidden beneath a stone, under the doorstep, beneath the pillow, and so forth. I may find them, but at the same time I will lose my soul, because I went to that very same enemy.

I gave him my soul so that he would leave my body alone. It is better, then, for me to waste away because of another person’s malice than to lose my soul. The right path is through the Church. This is the work of the Church: to destroy the works of Satan. Take someone who is possessed by a demon and bring him to the Church. He will not want to enter. This place smells like gunpowder to him; he does not want to come in. And if you bring him in by force, he will howl inside and keep looking for a chance to rush back out. This is not his atmosphere; he does not belong here. You surely know many men and women who do such things. Woe to them on the Day of Judgment!

Woe to them! Many, of course, do these things out of ignorance. Others do them so that everything will go well for them. Let me tell you about something that happened in Fyli—Fyli, near Athens, where magic is everywhere, ninety percent, for around Athens magic is everywhere. There was a woman about seventy years old who had never been to Confession. At that time I had been invited there—a monastery dedicated to Saint Cyprian and Saint Justina had been established there. The abbot knew me and asked me to come and speak at the feast, even though the monastery followed the Old Calendar. So I went. I did not go to speak about the calendar. I went to preach Christ and repentance, to those near and those far away. There I spoke about repentance, taking the Saint and his life as my example: what happened to him, the existence of Satan, and how Satan has us in his grasp today.

I laid down a spiritual condition, just as I do here. “No one is to leave this monastery without going to Confession,” I said. “Young and old alike, we will confess before we leave.” And I say the same to you: do not leave Aidipsos this year without going to Confession. Better to leave with your arthritis. Of course, I do not truly wish that upon you. Your mineral baths may not heal you completely, but the spiritual bath of Confession will make you strong and renewed. You will leave as different people and say, “I would rather remain ill for many more years, so that I may return to that place where I found myself.” A great crowd heard the sermon, and many remained for Confession. Four priests heard confessions all day long. One woman also went to confess, and the priest asked her how long it had been since her last Confession.

“I do not know,” she said. “This is the first time I have ever heard about Confession, from that man who spoke, so I decided to stay and confess too.” “You have never confessed before?” he asked. “No.” “How old are you?” She said she was over seventy. “Do you have a family?” “Yes.” “Do you have children?” “Yes.” “What about your children? How many do you have?” “Four.” “And how are they? Are they married and settled? How have you spent your life?” “Very well indeed.” “You never had any misfortune in your life—never anything at all?” “Neither illness nor misfortune. Everything went well for me. My children did well, studied, married, and always prospered.” “I will not be able to let you receive Holy Communion.” “Why?” she asked. “Have I done something?” “I believe there must be something behind all this calm.”

For the devil not to trouble you for seventy-five years means that something is going on. “But what is it? To what do you attribute it—to luck, to your parents’ blessings? To what? You did not go to Confession or receive Holy Communion. You received once every Pascha, took the light of the Resurrection outside, and then went home for the Easter meal. How, then, did you have neither illness nor misfortune nor anything else? How do you explain it?” She was bewildered. Imagine where this inquiry was going to lead. The conversation continued as she tried to discover what she owed all this to. At last she said, “Perhaps, Father, it is this: I have an amulet. I received it from my mother, who told me, ‘Take this, my child, and keep it safe. No harm will ever come to you.’”

“Where is this amulet?” “I am wearing it,” she said. “I have never taken it off. Only once, when I was going to the baths, I boarded the train and traveled two stations before remembering that I had changed my undershirt and left the amulet on the other one. I went back,” she said. “I postponed my trip to the baths so that I could return and get it.” The priest told her, “You will burn that amulet. Once you have burned it, come back and tell me, and then I will tell you whether you may receive Holy Communion.”

“I control the amulet; the amulet does not control me.” “Do as I tell you. You will burn the amulet, and after you burn it, you will come back here and I will release you from this bond. But if you do not burn it and I die, you will remain bound until the day you die. Not even a bishop will be able to release you. Go now! Next! Leave!” And she went away like a frightened little hen. That is what happened. She returned home and began questioning herself and arguing within: “What has this thing done to me, and why? Should I burn it? What will happen? Would it be wrong to burn it?” A thousand different thoughts passed through her mind. But she also kept thinking that she was under a binding prohibition against receiving Holy Communion on her deathbed. Three or four months passed. “Do not set foot here again,” he had told her, “and do not come to tell me anything—not even about the smoke.”

At last, one day, this thought prevailed: “I have raised my children and settled them in life. I have only a little longer to live now, if God grants me more time. I have grown old, and my husband is gone; he has died. Go and burn it.” So she went and lit a fire to burn it. But the amulet would not burn. It would not burn at all. She found it strange that even the paper did not catch fire.

One logismos—one intrusive thought—told her that it must be satanic. Another logismos, from the other side, told her that it was holy and that this was why it would not burn. So she tried again. She made a larger fire, added charcoal, and so on. Nothing happened. When it still did not burn, she got up and went to her spiritual father. She found him and reminded him: “I am the woman you spoke with, and this is what has happened.” He said, “Bring it here.” She did so. He read the appointed prayers over it and said, “Now take it and burn it.” When she took it away and set it alight, it made a tremendous explosion, as though an atomic bomb had gone off.

She returned, now understanding that it had been satanic, and went back to her spiritual father. He told her to come and receive Holy Communion on August 15. And indeed, on August 15 she went and received for the first time after Confession and metanoia—true repentance—and without that devil upon her. When she returned home, she lay down in the afternoon—it was summertime—and then collapsed and lost all sensation. She was left lying there paralyzed. Her neighbors and the others knew that this woman had become paralyzed on the very day she received Holy Communion. About ten or fifteen days passed. Then one day the door opened by itself. She was alone.

A neighbor had placed a little Agiasmos—the blessing of water—in a glass on her bedside table. She could barely move her hands enough to take something and put it into her mouth; she could do nothing else. Then the door opened, and in came the lord devil himself, dressed in the full schema, with his horns and tail. She saw him in all his dreadful splendor. He said to her, “You will stay there. Were you not pleased with me all these years? Did I not treat you well? What did you lack? Did illness ever enter your home? Did poverty come upon you? Did your children not marry well? Did they not study? What did you lack? Why are you driving me away? You will remain there.” You know, ask just once, if you wish, to see the devil, and then I will ask whether you ever commit sin again.

That is the secret. If a person could see the devil or Paradise, he would immediately decide what he ought to do. The woman tried to pull the sheet over herself because she could not bear to look at him. He was such a monster that she could not endure the sight. Then she stretched out her hands to reach the glass and throw the Agiasmos at him, to sanctify him, so to speak, and drive him away. She managed to reach it, took the Agiasmos, and threw it toward him. He vanished, and at that very moment she was released. She stood up, lived for another eleven or twelve years, and then died. These are the works of Satan. And you know, all of us here are entangled and caught in such things, some without even realizing it. Examine yourselves, then. These matters are not being discussed here by chance.

There is no professional motive behind this, nor any desire to deceive or mislead anyone. Our purpose is to tear people away from the devil, where the world has pinned them down, where superstition has pinned them down, where ignorance—dark ignorance—has pinned them down, and where foolish prejudice has pinned them down. “Do not put the soap down.” So you make your love for another person depend upon a bar of soap? Are you not ashamed? Are you not ashamed to make your love and harmony with your fellow human being depend upon the potash and oil from which soap is made? Are you not ashamed? And there are a thousand other examples. How many people run to mediums? You read about them in the newspapers—and they are among us Orthodox Christians. We expect the answer to come from there.

For the most part, these are not even matters of terrible suffering. Someone says, “I lost my child, and I would like to know whether he is alive or dead.” At last, in my weakness, I went so far as to ask even that devil. But often these are romantic affairs, troubles between husbands and wives, and other such things. They go to the devil to make things easier for them from then on. Yet these same people receive Holy Communion superstitiously on Holy Thursday, merely as a yearly custom. They attend Church superstitiously, for a long life and good fortune. And the devil is present within all these things. I do not know whether I am saying this well, or whether what I tell you is true. People lay out cards in the morning to see how the day will go. So you make your day depend upon cards? Why not make the sign of the Cross, look toward the East, and say, “Lord, show me the way today as well; go before me,” as Saint Kosmas of Aetolia teaches you?

Do you not know how to say, “Lead me, O Lord, in the way that I shall walk”? Do you not know how to say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears”? Do you wait for an answer from a deck of cards? I have seen Christian women and men playing cards even here. “Oh, we are only playing for a sweet, or for a coffee, just to kill time.” Really? What is time—a wild beast? Why must you kill it? Do you know what you are doing when you take that deck into your hands? You are taking hold of the devil himself and playing with him. You mock God, you mock Christ, you mock the Most Holy Theotokos, and you mock the Precious Cross. I tell you this as someone who once gambled with cards. Who, me? I was a foolish card player. I played day and night, and I sat down to play in order to win, not to lose. The king mocks God the Father,

the jack mocks Christ, the queen mocks the Most Holy Theotokos, and the clubs and the other suits mock the Precious Cross. There they are blasphemed and ridiculed. Cards are a Jewish invention, yet people—Christian people—play with them. Such cards ought not to exist. There ought to be no gaming table, no green felt in the home. None of these things ought to be there. You say you have time to spare.

Do you truly have time to spare—time to kill? What is time, a wild beast? Have you finished praying and still have time left over? Have you prayed about all the concerns you carry, especially those of your family, the Church, the nation, and the whole world? How long will you live here? You do not have even one hour to spare, yet you play cards. And above all, give up smoking. Ladies, smoking? How can you call yourself a lady when you are the slave of a weed?

How can you call yourself a gentleman—and take offense if I do not call you one—when you are the slave of a weed? Do you know what the Old Man of the Morea, Kolokotronis, once said? One night he was crossing from Zakynthos to Katakolo with about two hundred brave young men, coming to aid the struggle in the Peloponnese.

They were traveling secretly at night. When dusk fell, they slipped away to make the crossing. Once they were aboard, Kolokotronis took out his tobacco pouch to fill his pipe and smoke, but the pouch was empty. So he asked the other men, but not one of them had a cigarette or any tobacco. He asked the boatman as well.

No one had any. He became frantic. What did he do? He took out his pipe and a skewer and began scraping its inside, trying to gather a little residue to light, ease his craving, and carry him through the hour or two until they reached the Peloponnese. After scraping the pipe, he took out his tinder and fire steel to light it. Then he came to himself and uttered these memorable words: “Look at this—a man who aspires to free his brothers from the yoke of slavery, yet at this very moment has not freed himself from a weed. He is the slave of a weed.” And that night, it is said, he threw the pipe into the sea, the tinder into the sea, the fire steel into the sea, and the pouch into the sea.

He gave up smoking. Yes—and today he is regarded as a great man. The Most Holy Theotokos sees, and Christ sees. Just wait until the sirens sound, and then we shall discuss these matters. Then I will tell you where the cigarette cases will go, where the playing cards will go, and where all the witchcraft, the unlawful things, and the rest will go. Then you will see. Woe to us, because it seems to me that what is written in Proverbs will then come to pass. Read the first chapter of Proverbs, where it says: “Woe to you, for the hour will come when you will call upon me, and I will not answer.” It would be better for us to be burning, to call the fire brigade, and have them not come. It would be better for us to be dying, to call the emergency services, and have them not come,

than to speak to Christ and to the Most Holy Theotokos and hear: “I do not hear you.” “Why do You not hear us?” “Hearing for hearing,” the Fathers say: “Listen to Me, and I will listen to you. If you do not listen, I will not listen to you.” And I will not be to blame, because you yourself refused to listen and to establish that bond—the saving bond that you must have with the Creator, since we depend upon Him. So, as I bring these words to a close, I would like to remind you: keep whatever you think helpful from all that has been said up to this evening, during the time when Almighty God granted us to speak and to be together. I leave tomorrow; our time together is ending. And I pray to the Holy God that, if He does not again count us worthy to meet here, He may count us worthy to meet in Heaven. For the Christian does not come to an end here. He came here to die, and he dies in order to live. This is what I pray for one another and for all. Amen.

Σε μια μας ομιλία προχθές, είπαμε κάτι αναφορικώς με τον Διάβολο. Θίξαμε τα χρόνια του και έγινε μια συζήτηση πάνω σε αυτό το θέμα, και θα ήθελα απόψε το βράδυ κάτι να πω, ώστε να διαφωτίσω την υπόθεση. Διότι πολλοί άνθρωποι αμφισβητούν την ύπαρξη του σατανά. Τέλος πάντων, δεν ομιλώ για αυτούς που αμφισβητούν την ύπαρξη του σατανά. Ομιλώ για αυτούς οι οποίοι δεν αμφισβητούν την ύπαρξη του σατανά, μα αμφισβητούν τα χρόνια του και απορούνε, ίσως καλοπροαιρέτως: Πώς μπορεί να μετρήσει κανείς και να βρει περίπου τα χρόνια του σατανά;

Αναφέρεται. Αναφέρεται στο βιβλίο του Ιώβ, στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, συγκεκριμένως στο 38ο κεφάλαιό του, ότι όταν ο Θεός δημιουργούσε την γην, Τον υμνούσαν οι άγγελοί Του. Τι βγαίνει από αυτό;

τον κανακάρη, τον άνθρωπο, και τον έβαλε μέσα και του είπε: «Δικά σου όλα, για σένα αυτά, χαλάλι σου. Μόνο πρόσεχε αυτό, μην το πειράξεις, γιατί έχει ρεύμα και άμα το πειράξεις θα καείς. Εργάζου και φύλαττε». Να φυλάω; Εγώ και η Εύα δεν είμαστε;

Θηρίο, είναι αλεπού, είναι έχιδνα. Δεν το ξέρει ο άνθρωπος. Ο Θεός, Χριστός, νηστεύει 40 μέρες και 40 νύχτες. Ποιος είσαι εσύ, ταλαίπωρε άνθρωπε;

Δεν τον έκανε λοιπόν ο Χριστός τον σατανά. Μάλιστα, ήρθε στον κόσμο να καταλύσει τα έργα του σατανά. Γι' αυτό ήρθε ο Χριστός στον κόσμο, να λύσει τα έργα του σατανά. Ήρθε ο Χριστός στον κόσμο να καταργήσει τον θάνατον, που ο θάνατος αρχηγό έχει τον σατανά. Ο σατανάς έφερε τον θάνατον στον κόσμο. «Φθόνω διαβόλου», λέγει ο Σολομών, «εισήλθε ο θάνατος στον κόσμο», και ο Χριστός ήρθε να πεθάνει Αυτός, να ζωοποιήσει τον άνθρωπο. «Θανάτω Ιησού, θάνατον πατήσας», επάτησε τον θάνατο και ζωοποίησε τον άνθρωπο. Κατά συνέπεια, Του οφείλουμε του Χριστού πολλά ευχαριστώ, πολλή ευγνωμοσύνη γι' αυτό το έργο που έκανε και συνεχίζει να κάνει στην Εκκλησία Του, διότι εάν δεν υπήρχε σατανάς, τι χρειαζόσαντε οι εκκλησίες αυτές;

Ως επί το πλείστον δεν είναι πράγματα που βασανίζουν. «Έχασα το παιδί μου και θα ήθελα, ξέρω εγώ, αν μπορώ να μάθω αν ζει ή αν πέθανε». Τέλος πάντων, και έφτασα στην αδυναμία να πάω και σε αυτόν τον διάβολο ακόμη να τον ρωτήσω. Εδώ είναι θέματα αγαπητιλίκια, είναι θέματα αντρόγυνα στη μέση, άλλα. Και πάνε στον διάβολο για να τους διευκολύνει για τα περαιτέρω και είναι άνθρωποι που κοινωνούν από δεισιδαιμονία τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη, για τα χρόνια πολλά. Είναι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι εκκλησιάζονται από δεισιδαιμονία, για τα χρόνια πολλά, για το καλό. Και ο διάβολος, διάβολος σε όλα αυτά τα πράγματα μέσα. Δεν ξέρω αν τα λέγω καλά και αν είναι αλήθεια αυτά τα οποία σας λέγω. Άνθρωποι ρίχνουν το πρωί τα χαρτιά να ιδούνε πώς θα πάει η μέρα. Ώστε από τα χαρτιά εξαρτάς την ημέρα; Δεν κάνεις έναν σταυρό και να κοιτάξεις προς Ανατολή και να πεις: «Κύριε, δείξε μου και σήμερα, πήγαινε μπροστά», όπως σε λέει ο Άγιος Κοσμάς ο Αιτωλός;

Σου περισσεύει εσένα ώρα να σκοτώσεις την ώρα; Τι είναι η ώρα, θηρίο; Προσευχήθηκες και σου περίσσεψε ώρα; Για τόσα θέματα που έχεις, ειδικά οικογενειακά, της Εκκλησίας, του κράτους, του κόσμου ολοκλήρου; Πόσο χρόνο θα ζήσεις εδώ πέρα, που δεν έχεις ακόμη μια ώρα, και παίζεις; Και κυρίως, άσε το κάπνισμα. Κυρίες, κάπνισμα; Πώς μπορεί να λέγεσαι κυρία, εφόσον είσαι δούλη ενός χόρτου;

Πώς μπορεί να λέγεσαι κύριος, και αν δεν σε πω κύριο θα με παρεξηγήσεις, ως δούλος ενός χόρτου; Ξέρετε τι έλεγε ο Γέρος του Μοριά, ο Κολοκοτρώνης, όταν ένα βράδυ περνούσε από τη Ζάκυνθο στο Κατάκολο και ερχόταν για να βοηθήσει με καμιά διακοσαριά παλικάρια τον αγώνα στην Πελοπόννησο;
