Summary
Speaking in the days just after Bright Week, the speaker offers these remarks as a supplement to Pascha, while 'Christ is Risen' is still being sung. He rebukes the habit of communing unconfessed during Holy Week and the practice of bringing elderly or bedridden relatives to Communion unrepentant, dismissing as satanic inventions the notions that long illness melts away sins or that the sick cannot sin. Sin is a double offense that wrongs the neighbor and insults God, as Adam fell by one act of disobedience and Satan by a single thought; Pascha means a crossing, we are still in the desert, and like the manna gathered daily the Bread of Life must be received often, approached with fear of God, faith, and love.

...right after Pascha, and indeed a few days have now gone by. Bright Week, as it is called, has passed as well, and we are still in those days when "Christ is Risen" is heard, along with so many other things that are a cause of joy for man. Because this is what man was waiting for, and it came to him as a gift from God: the resurrection of his soul. Christ taught many things, and above all when He rose. Chief among them is the matter of the forgiveness of man's sins.
...which He taught both while He was living and when He returned after death. Man's most basic issue is the matter of putting his sins in order. When Christ came back to us from Hades and appeared formally on the very day of Pascha, in the evening, to His disciples there in Galilee, the first words He spoke to them after "Peace be unto you" had to do with this business of putting man's sins in order, since, as a man in this world, he is going to sin. For as our Church says, there is no one who lives and does not sin.
There is no person who will live in this world and not sin.
...Jesus said to them again, "Peace be unto you," and He adds, "As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And having said this, He breathed on them — He breathed on the faces of the Apostles — and He says to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whosoever sins you forgive, they are forgiven them; whosoever sins you retain, they are retained."
...of Pentecost He gives a special grace and institutes the loving Mystery of metanoia (repentance) and of Confession, through which a person's sins are forgiven. Right up to today, although some two thousand years have gone by, this Mystery has not been given the interest it deserves and has not been valued as it should be. Yet if it disappears, there is no salvation. Because there is no one who lives and does not sin. People, generally speaking and right up to today — people would have expected other things, other news, other revelations, when Christ returned from Hades. While He was in the world He preached, "Repent," and when He came back, again He lays down what concerns repentance and confession.
...this basic, this most basic Mystery, which every single person needs. Because if they do not make use of it, there is no salvation. For as human beings, I repeat, we will always sin, whether in word or in deed or in thought. So our greatest thanksgiving to God ought to be this: that He has given us as a gift this Mystery, which we hold in our own hands, so that at whatever moment we fall we can get up again and be restored to the place where we were before we fell. And yet there are people — perhaps even among us — who do not treat this Mystery as the first and foremost one. Whatever a person may do, if he has no spiritual father to confess to, he has done nothing in his life.
Even if he has every good work in the world entered on the credit side of his ledger, he is not going to find them anywhere. On the contrary, they will be turned around — because these are works of egotism — and they will be turned against him. And what the Lord spoke of would be preferable. For Christ once told us: be careful, He says, do not scandalize one of these little ones. It is better, He says, to hang a millstone around your neck — a great milling stone, that is — and to throw yourself into the sea right now, than to become a stumbling block to a single soul. That is what Christ said. I have not spoken these words, nor has any man, however great he may be. God Himself has spoken them. And so this loving Mystery remains...
...hidden from many people, and many went and received Holy Communion without making use of this loving Mystery, without cleansing themselves in repentance and confession — they came and communed out of habit, because these are the days of Holy Week and people commune. Many brought their elderly parents up, unrepentant and unconfessed. Many had the priest come to the house and gave Holy Communion to the sick, unrepentant and unconfessed, and indeed with the mistaken notion that a person who has perhaps had a long illness has no sins, because that person's sins melt away, or that the sick person is not able to sin.
...and that supposedly it is we who move about out in the world who do the sinning. Both of these are satanic inventions. Because a person does not have to be on his feet in order to sin. From that bed he grumbles, from that bed he blasphemes God. From there he accuses, from there he slanders. From there he fantasizes, and from there he sits and watches that demon-box, the television, and he manufactures images and phantoms in his nous, his spiritual intellect. From there he is defiled and from there he stinks. Where did you ever get the idea that because a man is sick he does not sin? And secondly, who told you that a long illness melts sins away? Where is that written? In that case all the sick would have to go to Paradise. And yet they do not.
So this is a mistake, and those of us whom God has arranged to care for the elderly, the sick and so on, we too need to know this and to help accordingly in these cases. No way and no method and no work of ours forgives sins — not one single sin. A person cannot wipe anything off the debit side of his ledger outside of confession. God, Christ — outside of the right that belongs to the Church. The Church is the one that forgives sins, on the basis of what Christ did when He came back from Hades. The greatest gift I had to bring back with me after my return from Hades was this, for you human beings. What we chant, "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death," has no bearing on us.
It has to do with those who have fallen asleep, with those who were down in Hades. What has to do with us is the other hymn, which says, "Jesus, having risen from the grave as He foretold, has granted us eternal life and great mercy." Here is our own secret. In what way was eternal life given to every person who comes into the world? And what is the mercy that Christ showed, or shows today, to every person who comes into the world — on the basis, of course, of His sacrifice on the Cross, His burial and His Resurrection? In what way is a person saved today? If he says, "Remember me, Lord," as the thief said, will the man go to Paradise? He does not go. He can say "Remember me" five hundred times; that has nothing to do with Paradise. There is another, new, particular way, after the Resurrection of Christ, by which a person is saved.
...neither do his works save him, nor does the thief's "Remember me" save him. As certain people keep saying over and over: I will just say my "Remember me." How? Who told you that you will be alive to say "Remember me"? You touch a live electric wire — what "Remember me" will you say? A car comes up onto the pavement where you are walking. It comes up, you have nowhere to go, it comes up — what "Remember me" will you say? You are seized by a demon — what "Remember me" will you say? You suffer a heart attack; in a fraction of a second you are on your way to the cypress trees. What "Remember me" will you say? You have a stroke in the brain. What "Remember me" will you say? It is quite absurd for people to be saying such things today, in the twentieth century. They are not permissible. The way is a particular one. The way after Christ is different. After the Resurrection of Christ, things have changed.
...He says, I am leaving in a few days; you are to do this. And elsewhere He says, "Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; he who believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not believe shall be condemned." So He is speaking about baptism, and indeed in the name of the Holy Trinity, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Not in the name of Jehovah, not in the name of a God who is simply one Person, but of a God in three Persons. You have read these things; you find it in Matthew, in the twenty-eighth chapter, the last section, verse nineteen. He also said, "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him, and I will raise him up on the last day."
"...my body is truly food and my blood is truly drink. He who does not eat my flesh and does not drink my blood has no life in himself." So what life do you have, then? Where did you find this life, if you are not nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ, and you take it once in a great long while — as a sort of "many happy returns," for the new clothes and the little gold tooth and "see you next year"? What life? These are basic things, and they are preached after the Resurrection of Jesus. They are necessary things, which a person must live. I told you when we spoke after New Year: make it your motto this year to commune frequently. If you do not commune frequently, you are living corpses. Only the Body and Blood of Christ is what preserves a person's life.
A person who is not nourished with the Body of Christ is a living corpse; he is tending an addled egg, a spoiled egg; he is tending a cage with a raven inside it. That is what such a person is, whoever he may be in learning and in wisdom and in money and in glory in this world — whoever he may be, he is simply a raven inside a golden cage, nothing else; he is fit for nowhere. How is he ever going to see these things clearly? This is what Christ said when He came back from Hades; that is where the whole matter begins. To this day people have no spiritual father — you know it well: they have their own butcher, they have a fishmonger, they have a tailor, they have a dressmaker, they have a barber, they have, they have, they have a greengrocer, they have, they have — they do not have a spiritual father. Do you understand?
...family doctors, and we do well to have them; I am not saying we are doing anything wrong. But when you have no spiritual father, what else are you building, whom are you working for? So that the worms will be fed when you die? What is your destiny? And Christ says plainly that you are the one to set in order the matter of people's sins — while we drink up iniquity like water. Where is it? Where does a person find the courage, if he understands anything, to walk without a spiritual father, without a guide? How can he walk at all? So this has to become faith in us; we have to digest it, we have to grasp it. And so, since Christ brought us these instructions from Hades and left them with us, this is what we must think about and this is what must occupy us:
...how we stand in relation to our sins before Christ. Christ asks for two things to be set in order: one toward the world, and one toward Himself. Because when a person sins, when he does not do what is right, he commits two sins. He harms his neighbour and he blasphemes his God, who gave the commandment not to do this — and I go and do it. Consequently I also wrong my neighbour: He told me, do not commit adultery, and I take his wife or her husband; do not steal, and I steal another man's sweat and blood. I sin against him, I wrong him. And at the same time I degrade God. I take no account of You; say whatever You like, I will do as I please. And you understand what a dire and critical position a person is in at every moment, even if he has only one single sin.
...how many sins did Satan commit, who from an angel became the devil? And how many sins did Adam and Eve commit, who lost eternity, and God was crucified? Has it ever occupied your mind? Because many people sometimes talk foolishly, of course. "Let me have the sin on me," one says. What is this that you are saying?
What is this that you are saying? That you will take the sin on yourself. What will you do with it? What use will it be to you? What is it — is it hard currency? What is sin, that you want to have it for yourself? A person ought to know what he is saying. I remember one case where there was a man possessed by a demon. And in the conversation that took place then, a lady — I don't know who she was, I could not see her. I have it on tape, they have passed it around, but I could not see her.
...she made a wish and says to him — forgive me — she said to him, "I wish you would go to Tartarus; come out of there and go off to Tartarus." The lady said it with such charm, so sweetly, as if she were serving caramels out of her mouth, Turkish delight. And the devil stands there and says this: "Ignorant fools, you have no idea what Tartarus is; you would never take that word on your tongue." But he said it with such passion, with such colour, that he carried in that one description all the horror that Tartarus holds. And we go on as though nothing at all were the matter: "Let me have the sin on me." What is sin, my Christ?
Why would you want to have it on you? Or is it simply that you don't care about sin, and where someone else is afraid and won't do a thing, you say, "Let the sin be on me — you go ahead and do it." First of all, sin is not transferable. I who did it am the one who will answer for it. It is not transferable. You cannot take my sins from me, my own sins, and neither can I take yours.
There is a folk saying that every little lamb hangs by its own little leg. There are particular cases where others will pay as well — without, of course, those who sinned being let off. Others will pay too over the same matter. But that is one thing, and this is another. So what is this sin? How many sins, I ask again, did Adam commit?
Did Adam do God any harm? Did he damage God's property, because he ate from a tree and God became poor? Did the rich God become poor? No. It was disobedience. God told him not to do it, and he did it.
The devil is the devil now; he is no longer the angel he was — and he used to look upon the throne of God face to face. How did he turn from white to black? He had a thought. He never got as far as acting, he never managed to do anything, to make a move. He merely thought of setting his throne above the thrones of God, of becoming like the Most High. The moment that rose up into his nous, his spiritual intellect, his brains were dashed out below, as the saying goes. He committed no other sin, he did nothing else, he made no one ill, he committed fornication with no one, he wronged no one, he killed no one — and from the place where he imagined he would be, up above everything, he found himself in Tartarus.
Has this ever crossed our minds? For what reason was God crucified? For what reason was God humiliated? He took the form of a servant and came down here and accepted the blows and the spittle of the Jews. And why? For one sin committed by somebody else. One single sin. For one sin, one act of disobedience. Sin means disobedience. Sin means error. Sin means missing the mark. "He missed the target." People shoot at a target and the round does not land in the mark where it was supposed to land. He missed the target, they say — it did not go exactly where it should. That is what sin is. Man's destination was to go there, and man swerved and did not go there. That is what sin is. And then someone comes along and says to you, "Let the sin be on me." What will you do with it? Those who took sin upon themselves: one ended up on the Cross, others ended up in Tartarus, and others found themselves naked.
Even if you generously shoulder it, what are you going to do with the sin? In any case you cannot take it on. You may say, "I never talk that way." Then what about your own sins — why are you keeping them, why do you hold on to them? Or do you not sin at all? Who has measured you and told you that you do not sin? Who took your own measure and told you that you are all right? With what scales and with what measure did you measure yourself? By some girlfriend of yours, by some friend of yours? Who told you that — because you drink together, play cards together, go out on the town together, gossip together, kill your children together? Who told you, who assured you that you have no sin and that this is not sin? How are you measuring it, as if it were a game? This is what ought to make us feel a kind of horror, my beloved. I am sorry to speak in this vein, but this is the truth. Because Pascha has come and gone, and the whole conversation was about the lamb on the spit,
and about the soul there was no conversation at all. For at our Pascha, Paul says, Christ was sacrificed. At Pascha Christ was sacrificed for us. It was not a lamb born of a ewe that was sacrificed. Christ was sacrificed; Christ was offered up. And we ought to have eaten the Pascha unleavened, and to be unleavened ourselves, without sin. The leaven is sin. In order to eat that Pascha, the lamb, the Jews had to clear the leaven out of the house as well. And for seven days they were to have no leaven, since they were keeping the Pascha. So that if you were caught with leaven in the house, you were stoned. And this is what it says to us as well: the leaven is sin; be unleavened, he says, be a clean lump of dough. I am saying this on the basis of Corinthians,
the fifth chapter of Paul — look at what it says. And meanwhile, whole shiploads of sins, unconfessed, in these very days. And people carry on exactly the same, as though nothing had happened. Pascha has been shut up inside a narrow family celebration, around a good table, a good wine, the pay packet, the thirteenth month's salary and so on. And it all came down to the holiday, to a cruise abroad, to the countryside and the green fields — all well and good. But what about the matter of our sins? What became of that matter, the very thing for which Christ came and was crucified and rose again? So we have not paid attention to these things as we ought, as I am telling you. And that is why we are seizing the opportunity now. What I am saying to you could well be described
as things left over from Pascha, a supplement to it. For Christ said many things, and many things were prefigured in the Old Testament, so that he gave people a great deal to pay attention to.
Do you remember that teaching of his which had to do with the journey of the Hebrews for forty years in the desert? If Pascha is the exodus, as we have said,
the passing over — Pascha means a crossing, a passing over. It does not mean food. And it has to do with the crossing and the departure of the Hebrews out of Egypt, through the sea, to the Promised Land. And we today have in a certain way made this crossing, this Pascha, and we have crossed over toward the Promised Land, so as to keep this gift of freedom that Christ has given us from death and from the hands of Satan — "singing the song of victory," as one of the hymns says as we cross over. We are under obligation to live the rest of our life as the Hebrews lived theirs during all that time until they reached the Promised Land — that is, in the desert; because right now we are in the desert. We have not yet arrived in the Promised Land.
A person arrives in the Promised Land at death. So it says here — I have the sixth chapter of John in front of me — it says this: "Amen, amen, I say to you, he who believes in me has eternal life. I am the bread of life." And so, in the person of Jesus and in the work of Jesus, faith is needed; and this faith is nourished, this faith is fed, by the bread of life. Whoever believes in me, he says, has eternal life. But that eternal life which I give him still has to be nourished. It is not enough on its own. Suppose, for example, I have put a potted plant in your hands. For that plant to be kept alive —
it is not kept alive automatically, all by itself; it will be kept alive when you take care of it. It is like a woman giving birth: the child came with a life in it, the mother brought forth a life, but that life needs looking after. The mother will take up her child and bring it to her breast and keep it alive by feeding it. If she sets it aside and does not care for it, then even though it was alive, it will die. And the potted plant, though it is alive, if it is not watered, if it is not tended, if you do not pull the weeds out of it, if you do not give it the right fertiliser and so on, it will dry up, it will die. So then, Christ is the life; and this life, which is given freely by Christ, is preserved — there is a way in which it is preserved. Listen to what he says. Whoever believes in me, then, and the life is eternal —
"I am the bread of life." Do you want to keep the life I have given you? I myself am at the same time the bread of life. "Our fathers ate the manna in the desert and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die." But here we are dealing with a different bread. The fathers ate and they died. But I am speaking to you now, and I will give you another bread, and whoever eats of it will not die. "This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down out of heaven."
"If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever."
"And the bread which I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." So the flesh of Christ which is offered upon Orthodox altars is for the life of the world. But what about the person who stands before this spiritual table, where bread is being served, where bread is being offered, and does not come forward to eat? What results does he get? How can he say that he is alive? How can he go about as though he were alive and speak as though he were alive, when in the eyes of God he is dead? He has the natural life that the animals have, that the birds have, that the wild beasts have in general, the creatures and so on. But he does not have the spiritual life. Do you remember how God dealt with them when they were in the desert? Every morning the manna was ready.
They would get up and gather it and feed themselves. And they were kept alive — in the typological life they had then, the life that was only a foreshadowing, a herald, a prophecy of the real life to come. The fathers ate, he says, and they died. But you, if you eat of the bread that I will give you, which is my body, you will not die unto the ages. That is, your soul will not be condemned to Hell — for death means Hell, being cut off from God. You will be united with me, all of you who eat of this. And he gave it to them every single day. Go on, say the Our Father, and you will come to a point where you say — though we do not understand it — "give us this day our daily bread." This day; not for tomorrow as well.
He gave them enough for one day. Whoever, out of little faith, gathered more than he had been commanded to gather, more than he would need for the day's requirements, found it full of worms. God had told him to gather a kilo — so much per head; there are five of you in the household, five kilos, that is enough to see you through today. If they gathered six or seven, with the thought that maybe he will not send it down tomorrow, maybe his machinery will break down, maybe his workers will go on strike — the way we think, having no trust in God — you saw the result: it was full of worms. There was only one case where it did not breed worms. On the Friday they gathered a double portion, because on the Saturday God did not rain it down. God kept the day of rest — not the way we keep it, so as not to spoil our cruises. All our sins and all our filth happen on
the day of rest, in our case. The heavens did not rain it down, and so he had given the commandment to gather two omers, so that they would have enough for the Sabbath as well. That portion did not breed worms. It was according to God's commandment. It was under God's blessing. And how long did this go on? Until they reached the Promised Land and began to sow and to reap and so on. And if for one reason or another, out of their own self-will, they did not gather it, what would happen? They would not simply die; they would perish like animals. And they would perish because God struck them down, because God punished them. Because they had disobeyed: he kept telling them, gather every day so that you may eat, and they would want to store it up for seasons ahead, or perhaps not gather at all. They would die, and they would be the ones responsible.
Well then, the same thing happens today: "give us this day our daily bread" — every single day. So how is it, my friend, that you stretch it out over years and years, three times a year, once a year, and so on? Why do you stretch it out? Are you afraid? You are a sinner — then why do you not stop the sin? An excuse. No, there is no excuse. Perhaps God will allow me in a few days to put out a recording on this very point, a cassette which will answer this exact question, and you will see how we are stripped bare from every side.
Do you know why we don't go and receive Holy Communion? Why won't we put an end to sin? Because we don't have the second element
of the invitation. And what is the invitation? When the chalice is brought out at the holy doors, what does Christ say? Don't look at the priest, don't look at the bishop; it is Christ Himself who is offering, through the hand of the priest or the bishop. What does He say? "With the fear of God, with faith, and with love,
draw near."
If you have no fear of God, if you don't believe and you have no love, what are you doing here? Your candles, your incense, your baptisms — what are you doing standing in that line? What do you want with these things?
Three things. Do we have the fear of God? My beloved, a lady may be frightened of a cockroach — well, a cockroach isn't going to kill us. No, that isn't it. How many lies we are going to tell! Faith. Do you believe? If you believe, then Christ is not a liar. You believe — then why do you steal? Didn't He say, "You shall not steal"? Why do you lie? Why do you wrong your neighbour? Why do you grab for yourself, and why do you dishonour others? Why do you live with no holiness in you — if in fact you do believe? Do you really believe in Him? Do you love Him? Do you fear Him?
Then you take Him into account. You do the things He said, the things He says. For He Himself says, "Whoever loves Me will keep My commandments." You show it in a completely different way. If your candle is just for show — and the candle is made of paraffin, it isn't really wax at all — that is no proof of faith. Faith, love toward My person, and reverence toward My person mean this: that you listen and that you act with fear.
And this is exactly why, because of these three failures of the fear of God, a person is left without the Bread of Life — the very Bread for which Christ was crucified, so as to give it to us daily, and indeed through His Body and His Blood, in the two most agreeable foods there are for a human being: bread and wine. Neither the small child nor anyone else
rejects these two foods; they are the most agreeable of all. And so anyone at all can easily receive these things, if he wants to and if he believes. Under this guarantee, then, a person has to take a stand. "And the bread that I will give is My flesh." This is the Bread of Life. "Which I will give" — My flesh — "for the life of the world." And at that point what happened was this: "The Jews therefore quarrelled among themselves, saying, How can this man give us His flesh to eat? Jesus therefore said to them, Amen, amen" — He insists — "I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves." I repeat to you: however successful a person may be considered by the world or in the world, if he has no relationship with the Holy Chalice, you may as well prepare his memorial kollyva right now. You have a walking cemetery on your hands; it is a living corpse you are looking after, a living corpse you are talking about, a living corpse you are praying for. He is fit for nothing, so long as he is not nourished with the flesh of the Son of Man.
"He who eats My flesh" — not "he who ate"; notice how He completes the thought. These are commands, they are commandments that have to be put into practice after the Resurrection of Christ and according to the laws and the ordinances He has left in His Church. "He who eats My flesh" — not "he who ate," once, or now and then at certain seasons, the way we imagine it — he who eats My flesh continually and drinks My blood "has eternal life." He has it — not "he will have it." From today the Christian is in Paradise. All that is needed is one small episode, so to speak, called death,
for him simply to fly away, to go to his rest. From today — do you know how it is? It is Christ, and the believer with Christ, in God. Read the third chapter of Colossians and you will find that "our life is hidden with Christ in God." So long as I have a relationship with Christ today, eating His Body and drinking His Blood, I have a tube through which I receive a transfusion of blood from Christ; we are one with Christ. And since Christ is God, I too am there today. Where Christ the Head is, there I am too today in my soul. And all that is needed is one small episode: to leave the cage behind and let the bird go to its place. From today, He says —
not "he will have it," at some point in the future — he communes today and he will have eternal life. No. Eternal life does not begin beyond the grave. Eternal life begins here and stretches on beyond the grave. And so whoever cuts himself off — I don't know for what reason, either because he himself doesn't want to stop sinning, or because he doesn't know any better, or for other reasons — whoever cuts himself off from Christ, from the cup of life, from the Bread of Life, from the moment he is cut off he is dead. Unlike the one who is organically united with Him: "He abides in Me," He says, "and I in him." That man has life from today, and he has passed over from death into life.
Death simply means that he left the shell behind down here and the bird flew off into eternity. So pay attention to these expressions, which make us responsible and oblige us to change our lives. "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life. And I will raise him up on the last day." That is what still remains. I will raise him up. This body of his will go down into the ground, and I will raise it up. I won't be raising his soul — his soul is already risen from now. His soul is already alive from now. What I will raise up then is his body as well. His soul is risen from now.
"Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and to those in the tombs granting life." What life did He grant to those who were in the tombs? He granted life to their bones and He granted life to their souls. From black, He made the soul red; He made it alive, He brought it back to life. So a person comes alive in his soul from here, on the day he is baptised. Baptism is the resurrection of the soul. And this soul is now inside a cage. One day it will be set free from there too, and it will fly off into eternity. And yet Christ will raise up this cage as well. Notice what He told us on the day of Great Friday,
in church, when the Epitaphios came back in and the prophecy of Ezekiel was read — notice what He said there. He says: "Son of man, can these bones be raised, can they speak, can they live?" "You know, O Lord," he says; I do not know. "Then say to them: Thus says the Lord to these bones." Preach a sermon to the bones, He says, and tell them that I say: I will fit you back together, I will put flesh on you, I will put sinews on you, I will put skin on you, I will put spirit in you, and all the rest of it. "And I prophesied," he says, to those who were lying there. "And as He told me," he says, "so I spoke." He stood and preached a sermon to the bones, in a plain that was filled to overflowing with dry bones. "These bones," he says, "thus says the Lord" — and as he prophesied, there came an earthquake.
As that whole heap of bones was shaken, each one went, he says, to its own joint, and they became skeletons; and then I see sinews coming onto them, the tendons went in, and after that flesh coming on and skin coming on. But there was no spirit in them — like Adam before God breathed into him. "Prophesy," He says, "to the spirit as well." And he prophesies to the spirit as well. And the spirit comes and enters in. The souls go in. And the place was filling up with people. This is what awaits us tomorrow. Does anyone believe it? This is why Christ goes down into Hades. This is why "you have buried Me this night," says Christ. This is what I am going to do for you.
I will conquer death, I will raise you up one day, whether you believe it or not, whether you want it or not. So tell the world, He says, let them know — because people say, they're only dry bones. The wild animals ate some of them, and others the gravediggers sold off down there for fertiliser, and took them wherever they liked. The particles still exist. Tomorrow we will all be fitted back together and we will become human beings again, because God wills it. Not because we will it — we only believe it. And in fact we are unbelievers, and worse than unbelievers. We believe nothing, we do not believe. How He puts up with us I do not know; how He puts up with us belongs to the long-suffering patience of God.
"My flesh is true food." This is no joke, it is not done as a remembrance, it is not a pretence, it is not what the Protestants say — that it signifies rebirth. It does not signify rebirth at all; it is rebirth. "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father" — that is, whatever relationship I have with the Father — "so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me" — he too will have that relationship with Me. The believer with Christ, and Christ with God.
It is so from now on. That is why Paul says that if Christ is in us, the body is dead because of sin. If we commune and confess and then go splashing back into the mud and sin all over again, we never truly became members joined to Christ. When a person is bound to Christ, he cannot sin; Christ does not let him sin — and some of you will have noticed this. The very things they used to flirt with so readily — schemes, frauds, the sins of the flesh and the rest — now they are afraid of them. They don't even want to hear about them; they keep away from them.
Someone has climbed in now and taken hold of the bridle; He is holding the reins. But if you see that you are still easily pulled and dragged and swept along, know that you do not yet have an organic relationship with Christ. It is Christ who holds a person back — if only a person would open up to this relationship that I have been reading to you about this hour. If a person knew what it is, this way in which God exists with Christ and Christ with the believer, how this fitting together works — he simply cannot know it. And in his fourteenth chapter, do you know what he writes? "On that day you will know that I am in God, and God in Me, and you in Me."
"On that day you will know" — that is, how I have an organic relationship with the Father and how you have an organic relationship with Me. And we are a trio: God, Christ, the believer. Christ is the connecting link between the believer and God. You keep up communion by eating His flesh and drinking His blood, and at the same time you are with God too. Bring Christ to dwell inside you: Christ has never existed without God or without the Holy Spirit. Where God is, there is the Father, there is the Spirit, there is Christ; where the Spirit is, there is the Father and there is the Son; where the Father is, there is the Son and there is the Spirit. So this scene here, where He says, "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me." And thus it is
"...this is the bread that came down from heaven, not as our fathers ate the manna and died." Whoever eats — notice, the one who keeps on eating, not the one who ate once; I repeat it. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. And with this we have no relationship at all. Did you commune at Pascha? Most of you did not commune at Pascha. Did you commune on Holy Thursday? You went to church on Holy Saturday — you went, yes, but did you commune? No. What did you do? You went to church on the night of Pascha; did you commune? No. Because most people left; they went off to eat. And even of those who stayed, most did not commune. Did you commune on Bright Monday? No. On Tuesday? No. On Wednesday? No. On Thursday? No. Yesterday, Friday, perhaps, the feast of the Life-giving Spring — maybe a few communed then. And the day before that, which was —
Perhaps also on Thomas Sunday. On other days they will commune tomorrow; in most churches the series of forty liturgies is being served, and the faithful go in the morning, they consider it a necessity. A food ration is being handed out, my friends — let me put it in plain, everyday terms — a food ration is being handed out; the Christians go, they take their children to commune. So then, how are people going to live? Keep in your mind what I am telling you. There is no way outside the one that Christ himself lays down. I am not speaking out of my own head; I am speaking from the things that Christ himself says. The church ought to be full, and the chalice ought to be emptied every single time. Then individuals will change, and families, and societies, and everything. Without the Holy Chalice, without the Body and Blood of Christ, without the keeping of God's commandments, how is it possible for a person to stand up and do anything,
how is he to show anything to those outside, so that even those outside take notice that something is really happening here, and that this is Orthodoxy? So pay attention to these things, now that God has permitted them to be said. Pay attention to them; they are indispensable. See to it that your household has a spiritual father, both for each person individually and for the family together. And if you cannot have one for the whole family — for all sorts of reasons I do not know — no one is forcing us to go to the same spiritual father the wife goes to, or the one the parents go to; we do not always want that, children and all, I understand. Let each of us at least have his own. There are many spiritual fathers, and one should be discerning in choosing. Second: let us stop sinning, and let us go to church as often as we can. You women can go more often than the men, who are at work. But God has given some of the men the opportunity as well — some are retired, and for other reasons.
They can take a day off and go. Consider it an absolutely necessary thing: go and feed your soul with the immortal food, because that is how the conditions for salvation are created. "And I will raise him up on the last day." I cannot leave a person down in Hell, and I cannot leave his body down there — a body that has my own body within it, that is nourished on me. My body is a resurrected body; his cannot stay in the ground. Such is the graft that is implanted in us creatures of clay: it is a guarantee. And I hold on to that guarantee of his, that he will raise me up on the last day. That is why on the graves of the Orthodox no other inscription has ever been placed except: "I look for the resurrection of the dead." Nothing else. Bury me, trample me, burn me, sell me, do whatever you like. I look for the Resurrection of the dead.
My Christ is risen, therefore I too shall rise. It is exactly the same. He became the firstborn from the dead; he became the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. I too shall get up one day. My question is what I will get up as — a raven or a dove. That is the question. And this is the work Christ is doing. For this Mystery to bear fruit, for it to have its good results, the uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit must be present. "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." These are the things I came to say as a first instalment after the Resurrection of our Christ. My prayer is that the "Christ is Risen" may be worthily extended into us as well — as a resurrection of our own soul, and of our family, and of those dear to us, and of our enemies, and indeed of this whole world.
Christ was crucified, died, was buried and rose again for the whole world. That is why his Cross has four arms: to show that to the East, to the North, to the West and to the South, he wants the salvation of all people.

άνθρωπος που δεν τρέφεται με το σώμα του Χριστού είναι ζωντανός νεκρός, περιποιείται ένα αυγό κλούβιο, ένα αυγό χαλασμένο, περιποιείται ένα κλουβί που έχει μέσα έναν κόρακα. Αυτός είναι ο άνθρωπος, οποιοσδήποτε κι αν είναι σε επιστήμη και σε σοφία και σε χρήμα και σε δόξα στον κόσμο τούτω, οποιοσδήποτε κι αν είναι, είναι απλώς ένας κόραξ μέσα σε ένα χρυσό κλουβί, τίποτα άλλο δεν είναι, δεν κάνει για πουθενά. Πως θα τα δει παράλλη σε αυτά τα πράγματα; Αυτά είπε ο Χριστός όταν ήρθε από τον Άδη, από εκεί ξεκινάει το θέμα. Οι άνθρωποι μέχρι σήμερα που δεν έχουν πνευματικό, κύριο το ξέρετε, έχουν κρεοπώλη δικό τους, έχουν ψαρά, έχουν ράφτη, έχουν μοδίστρα, έχουν κουρέα, έχουν, έχουν, έχουν μανάβι, έχουν, έχουν, δεν έχουν πνευματικό, το καταλαβαίνετε;
αμαρτίες έκανε ο σατανάς που από άγγελος έγινε διάβολος, και πόσες αμαρτίες έκανε ο Αδάμ και η Εύα που έχασαν την αιωνιότητα και σταυρός Αντωθέως; Σας απασχόλησε ποτέ; Γιατί πολλοί ομιλούν καμιά φορά ανόητα βέβαια. Εγώ, λέει, να την έχω την αμαρτία. Τι είναι αυτό που λες;
ευχήθη και του λέει, σου εύχομαι, συγγνώμη, του είπε, να πας στα τάρταρα, να βγεις από εκεί πέρα μέσα και να πας στα τάρταρα. Το είπε με τόση χάρη η κυρία, Ήλες Ποινής, σαν να πρότεινα σερβίρι καραμέλες από το στόμα, τσί λουκούμια ραχά. Και στέκεται ο διάβολος και έτσι λέει το εξής, Ανίξτερες μωροί, τι είναι τα τάρταρα, δε θα τα πιάνεις τη γλώσσα σου. Αλλά το είπε με τέτοιο πάθος, με τέτοιο χρώμα, που μετέφερε μέσα στο χαρακτηρισμό του όλη τη φρίκη που ταρτάρει. Και εμείς σαν να μην συμβαίνει τίποτα, εγώ να την έχω την αμαρτία. Τι είναι η αμαρτία, Χριστέ μου;
λαϊκή έκφραση λέγει ότι το κάθε αρνάκι κρέμεται από το ποδαράκι του. Είναι ειδικές περιπτώσεις που θα πληρώσουν και οι άλλοι διάβολοι. Χωρίς βέβαια να απαλλαγούν αυτοί που ημάρτησαν, αλλά θα πληρώσουν και άλλοι για το ίδιο θέμα. Αυτό, άλλο το ένα, άλλο το άλλο. Αλλά τι είναι αυτή η αμαρτία, πόσες αμαρτίες, επαναλαμβάνω, έκαμε ο Αδάμ;
Αν δεν έχεις φόβο Θεού, άμα δεν πιστεύεις και δεν έχεις αγάπη, τι θέλεις εδώ; Τα κεριά σου, τα λιβάνια σου, τα βαπτίσματά σου, τι θέλεις στην ουρά μου σου, τι θέλεις αυτά τα πράγματα;
τρία πράγματα. Έχουμε φόβον Θεού; Λέω η αγάπη μου, μπορεί η κυρία να φοβάται την κατσαρίδα, δεν θα μας σκοτώσει. Ε, όχι. Πόσα ψέματα θα λέμε. Πίστη. Πιστεύεις; Εφόσον πιστεύεις, δεν θες ψευστία ο Χριστός. Πιστεύεις, γιατί κλέβεις; Δεν είπε να μην κλέψεις; Γιατί ψεύδεσαι; Γιατί αδικείς τον άλλο; Γιατί μαζεύεσαι και γιατί ατιμάζεις; Γιατί χωρίς όγιο; Εφόσον πιστεύεις. Αυτός πιστεύεις; Αν τον αγαπάς; Αν τον φοβάσαι;
