Summary
Returning to Matthew 5–7, the lecture focuses on Christ’s command to love, bless, serve, and pray for those who hate and persecute us. Christians should surrender retaliation, examine their own guilt, and consult God through prayer before pursuing vindication through worldly means. Those who harm us can become spiritual benefactors because enduring their hostility without revenge exposes our passions and helps lead us toward holiness.

Tonight, I would like us to return to our interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount. We took a break after about ten talks—perhaps eleven or twelve; I do not remember exactly.
We spoke about the events of Christmas and other timely matters that we somehow had to pause for. And tonight, now that with God’s help we have come through this cycle of feasts, let us continue—if God permits and grants us life and health—and offer a few thoughts on those three chapters which, as we said, are the fundamental chapters every person ought to know.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters of Matthew, which contain, as we commonly say, the whole Law and the Prophets. From my notes, I see that we had stopped at the fifth chapter, verse forty-four, specifically where our Lord said: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you: love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you.”
Again, as I see from my notes, we dealt with the subject thoroughly at the time. A great deal was said. But the subject is vast and has many sides. The Word of God is like a prism, with many facets. And this matter in particular—the matter of enemies and of loving your enemy—is not something that comes easily to a person. For enemies are often truly hostile and persist in such a way that it is very difficult for a person to work this command through within himself. From my own personal experience,
if you will permit me, I would like to say a few words—not from the texts, although I will also tell you what the texts say and what the Fathers say, for through the Holy Spirit they interpret the words of the Holy Spirit written in Holy Scripture—but from my own personal experience.
I found myself facing this very dilemma: I had to love my enemy. I was truly shocked; I stumbled over it in the fullest sense of the word. It seemed impossible. Naturally, it is impossible by human strength. The Gospel may say it, but of course the Gospel does not lie or give commandments that cannot be fulfilled. To say that would be blasphemy—God forbid such blasphemy! Everything Christ said can be fulfilled, but not by merely human means.
With human reasoning and human strength, you cannot put this into practice. So what happens now? “Lord, are we going to Hell? I cannot do it. What is to become of me?” This is the question, the dilemma, that each of us faces at different times in life. Some have allowed this condition to settle in and become permanent. They always have enemies, and they have made no effort to resolve the matter. They simply reach the point of saying, “I cannot stand him. I cannot bear to see him. I cannot listen to her. I cannot meet her. I do not even want to hear anything about her—or about him,” and so on. We put forward a thousand different excuses. Then the question arises, as I said earlier: “What am I to do, Lord? Am I to be condemned to Hell? I cannot do it.” Do you know what the answer will be?
“You?” When I received that answer, I confess that it backed me into a corner, as the saying goes. For the issue was not merely that I could not do it; the truth was that I did not want to do it, as though I were completely lacking in hatred myself. That was the secret. Christ does not ask me, “Why can you not do it?” He says to me, “Are you willing?” Put that question to our Lord if you ever face this dilemma—though I pray you never do, and that we may avoid such a thing—because it is very hard to love an enemy and to forgive. It would be easier to be flayed alive, to have your skin stripped off, or your fingernails torn out. Forgiving feels as though a piece were being torn from you, from your very heart.
And when the injustice, the evil, the slander committed against you, or the humiliation you have suffered is serious, you feel as though pieces of you are being cut away. In the situation I have described, then, Christ asks the injured person: “You who claim to be afraid of Hell—I know that you cannot do it.
I have already told you, though you do not remember: ‘Without Me you can do nothing.’ I told you, but you have forgotten. What do you think you are unable to build—mansions, skyscrapers, ships? No. It is these good things I command that you cannot accomplish. You cannot love your enemy. You cannot do these good things I tell you to do by yourself. But you never took Me into account. You never once said this to Me:
‘I cannot bear him. Help me—I want to love him.’ But we do not want to. When that question was put to me, do you know that it took me three or four days to digest it, to turn it over within myself, and finally to answer that I was willing? I blamed it on Satan: “It is the evil one; this comes from the evil one,” and I came up with a thousand other things, trying to push the question aside and clear it out of the way. Yet the question was directed at me: “You are afraid of Hell because you cannot carry out what you were told—to love the person who harmed you, treated you unjustly, and accused you?” “Yes, certainly; but I am asking you: are you willing, even though you cannot do it?” That is the real issue. And I was not willing. That is how it is.
In such situations, do we answer at once, “Yes, Lord, I am willing; help me”? We do not say it, because inwardly we are unwilling. We would like at least a little revenge. “After what he did? He has burned me and tormented me for so many years. And now I am supposed to congratulate him as well?” Who can understand this? Who says such a thing? God says it. And if God says it, that means it can be put into practice.
It also means that it is necessary for things to be done this way. But because we put forward our malice, our egoism, and our own solution in our own way, we never discuss the matter with the Lawgiver. Today someone wrote me a prescription for my blood sugar.
They sent it to me with a note at the bottom: “If there is anything we have not explained clearly or that you do not understand, call me and I will explain it.” Well then, Christ has written a prescription—not for the body’s blood sugar, but for the soul’s. Are you unable to make sense of it, work it out, interpret it, put it in its proper place, and set it in order within yourself? Call Him and ask Him what it means: “This is what I read here. It cannot be wrong. Tell me; explain it to me; illumine me; strengthen me, so that if this is indeed what You mean, I may do it.” Here lies our responsibility. Our responsibility is not that we do not love our enemy. Our responsibility is that we do not want to love our enemy, and that is why we do not love him.
Whatever a person truly wants, he does. Man is a formidable creature; he accomplishes seemingly impossible things. But he will not bring himself to humble himself and say: “What is happening here? God is speaking to you, and you argue with me? Submit, you wretched man! You deserve to suffer even worse.” And who says that when you trouble me, I am truly harmed? Am I really harmed? And when my ego suffers a loss, am I myself truly harmed? Who says so? From what perspective? How do you justify it? According to what is temporary, according to the world and your egoism. “I have my dignity, and I want to preserve it.” Yes—but in pursuing your human dignity, you may lose your dignity as a Christian. Then what? “I will put him in his place.”
Take care that you do not step out of your own proper place while trying to put someone else in his. Have you considered these things? If we were to look at the matter in this way—and perhaps there are other aspects I cannot grasp at this moment—we would see that what is written here is not unreasonable. It is true. But we have never placed ourselves under the judgment of the Word of God, under the judgment of Christ. We have not done so. We read it, but we do not study it and do not put it into practice. I once told you: “Do you want to become Christians? Take the Gospel, and make every word you read part of your life before moving on. You do not need what comes later if you have not practiced what came first.” Is that not so? When you construct a building, do you begin with the roof tiles? No; you build and then rise higher.
You rise as you build, and you build as you rise. Is that not so? How, then, could it be entirely the opposite in Christianity? Here, then, a person receives the greatest prize if he succeeds in loving his enemy. An interpreter from the early Church says: “The crown and summit of every virtue is to love one’s enemies.” To possess the strength—or to struggle, by the grace of God, to acquire the strength—to love one’s enemies is, he says, the diadem and crown of every virtue. “We love them not insofar as they are enemies, but insofar as they are human beings.” Do I love someone because he is sexually immoral?
Do I approve of sexual immorality and love him for that? No. I love him because he is a human being, and a human being must be loved. In other words, a distinction is being made. Others interpret it in greater detail, but I will put it to you this way: you must not love his sin; you must love the human being, his person. I remember that I once worked for the Olympic Games Committee. A swindler came in while my director and I were sitting opposite one another. My director was extremely tightfisted, in the fullest sense of the word. Yet he felt sorry for the man—I do not know how he understood the situation. And when he saw me give the man something, because the man claimed that one of his children was dying and that he needed money for the burial, or something of that kind, my director also took out some money and gave it to him. Then this swindler
somehow found my director’s home, I believe, and even went there to speak to his wife. Something like that happened. The next day my director came to the office absolutely furious, because he had given the man ten drachmas—or whatever the amount was. “And this,” he said, “is why I am right not to give anything.” I understood what had happened, so I wrote him a note and sent it through the assistant. I could not answer him from where I was sitting, but I could see that he was seething with bitterness. The swindler had deceived him and taken financial help from him. So I wrote, “Forgive me, but I showed mercy to him in his wretched condition, not because I approved of the kind of person he was.” He took the note, read it, and said, “So that is how I should think about it?”
Yes, that is how you should think about it. How else could you think about it? Are you now going to search the civil registry? Will you go to the police to see whether he has a record? When someone comes before you in anguish and in need, you help him as a fellow human being. Will you first see whether he is black, yellow, or green? You offer what you can and show him love. The teaching is this: you do not love his sin; you love his person. “We love them not insofar as they are enemies”—not for the evil they do, by which they become enemies either to themselves or to others—“but insofar as they are human beings.” You are obliged, he says, to love him as a human being. Let me give you one more saying, from the Father Clement of Alexandria. Listen to what he says: “To love one’s enemies does not mean loving evil,” he says,
the evil they do. “Nor are we to love impiety, adultery, or theft, but rather the thief, the ungodly man, and the adulterer—not insofar as he sins and, through his defiling conduct, stains the very name of man, but insofar as he is a human being and the work of God.” That is, as God created him. Therefore, as a creature of God—even if he is sinful, unjust, blasphemous, or the one who harmed you—you are obliged to care for that person and to love him, meaning to have compassion on him. You do not have to take him and hold him to your bosom. No. But we have adopted the saying, “Do good to your friends and harm your enemies.” That is what has become our way.
We invite our own people over; we eat together, celebrate together, even sin together. We open our wallets to them and give them everything, because they are ours and we love them. But someone once said something against us; someone does not belong to our political party or our organization—and so we keep him at a distance. That is not Christian. A Christian regards all people equally. There is, however, a distinction to be made when giving alms—when you have one drachma and must decide where to give it. Then you will use discernment. You will give it to a member of the household of faith, to a friend of God, to someone who will say, “Glory to God; may God forgive you,” and offer a few good words. You will not give it to a swindler or just anyone else. If you have plenty, you can distribute it among several people. There are circumstances in which you must use discernment.
Of course it is difficult—not merely difficult, but exceedingly difficult. Yet Christ will give you the strength to see differently the person whose very sight, or even the thought of him, once made you recoil. Some people have done us such great harm that merely speaking about them or seeing them makes us react with revulsion, let alone loving them and speaking well of them. It is beyond human strength. To attain this, a person must leave behind “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” He must turn away from that path and take the steep road.
He must cease seeking revenge; he must cease being the aggressor and choose to be the victim rather than ever becoming the aggressor. If possible, he should not seek to vindicate himself in this world. God does not want that; it is not a beautiful thing. If God grants you justice in some way known to Him, then all is well. But it is not spiritually profitable for you to press your own claims forcefully in this world. I spoke earlier about what the world calls dignity, ego, and so forth. In the eyes of God, these things are laughable. A person might be treated as everyone’s punching bag in this world. But that is not easy to do if he is God’s child.
When a person is treated that way, it is because he is far from God and has no spiritual radiance. People neither respect nor regard him; they count him as bran, straw, nothing at all, because he carries no spiritual weight. We have an expression for such a man: he casts no shadow. That is what we say—he has no presence, no radiance. But a Christian has radiance and spiritual weight. Suppose you enter a home where the people are not religious. The moment you walk in, because you live the faith and bear even a little grace from God, you see them shrink back and hurry to hide. That is precisely what happens to them. They grow quiet, do not utter a sound, and cover up the television—childish things like that.
Whom are they afraid of? Who has come in—the bogeyman? Why are they frightened? No; it is your spiritual weight, the grace God has given you. So it is not easy for someone to harm you. It is not easy. There is always some reason behind your temptation. I firmly believe that such things are permitted because of our sins. All these circumstances arise because we are far from God and far from His will. For if there is one Person whom we never consult about our affairs, it is God. He is the One we do not ask. We ask everyone else: the experienced, the specialists, worldly-wise people, lawyers, legal advisers, and who knows whom else. The One we do not ask is Christ. There are many doors.
Yet there is one door for the Christian, a door in Heaven, and we do not knock on it readily. A person may go about knocking on many doors, but not on that door in Heaven. So he is deprived of many things. He falls into temptations, creates hostilities, becomes entangled, and is finally bound into a Gordian knot that only another Alexander the Great can cut—and that is Christ. We pay no attention to this path, though both the good and faithful and those who are evil would benefit from doing so. Those who are evil could have kept themselves from becoming evil and could have become good, had they also paid attention to this road to Heaven. I do not know whether you remember something I told you one evening...
Once a father went out to steal. You may remember this from another point in a previous talk. He took his young son, a schoolchild, and stationed him at a crossroads. He said, “Keep watch. Look down this road and then down that one. If you see anyone coming who might catch us, warn me—whistle or make a sound,” or whatever signal they had arranged. When the boy heard this, he asked, “Father, isn’t there another road?” “No, these are the roads I am telling you to watch.” “There is another road, Father.” “Listen to me! Where is this other road?” “Above us, Father. There is another road from Heaven. Might someone be watching us from there?” That was the end of it. The father...
The father forgot all about the theft. He left, abandoned the attempt, and went home, because his child had reminded him that there was another road. Unfortunately, neither we who call ourselves believers nor those who do evil pay attention to that road. If both groups did, the results would be very different. Since the Gospel makes no mistakes and Christ did not command anything impossible, I repeat: His words, “Love your enemies,” must become a reality. Christ will grant you the necessary illumination.
You will begin to see differently the person who harmed you. That is where it starts. Just as sinful, satanic desire begins the moment you cultivate an attraction toward another person, so divine love begins when you put Christ’s commandments into practice. If you pray, you will see all people as equal. It is as though you were given special spectacles—the spectacles of grace—and they are not sold anywhere in this world. Read all the wisdom of the world; go wherever you wish in search of knowledge—it will give you nothing of this. This is a special grace that Christ will give you. Where once you were like a wild beast, ready to spring upon someone and tear him apart, you will now endure being slapped.
What a strange thing! How did I become peaceful so suddenly—I, who had been so hostile toward her, or whoever it was? What happened? The Master came and took charge. “I will help you. I will give you a heart of compassion. I will transform your nature so that it no longer seeks revenge.” For if I insist on demanding vengeance from another person, God will step in and demand an account from me as well. Then the words of the Prophet will be fulfilled: “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” If we are going to settle accounts, who can stand before Him? We demand satisfaction from the person who harmed us, from our enemy.
But then God will take hold of us and say, “Very well, settle that account—but now you must also give an account to Me.” How will we manage then? Let us first deal with our own sins. Yet we do not consider our own guilt; we simply do not. Many of us, my beloved, say the “Our Father,” declaring that we are children of God. Are you Panagopoulos’s son? Are you George Tskatinas’s son? Aren’t you ashamed? Do people not often say to us, “Aren’t you ashamed to call yourself so-and-so’s child?” Once, when I was a small boy, I picked a loquat from a tree growing along the wall of our garden. One of its branches hung over onto our side, and I took a fruit from it. The neighbor was watching. “Aren’t you ashamed,” he said, “to be the son of Thanasis Panagopoulos?” I felt myself choke; I wanted the earth to swallow me because I had stolen one loquat.
I was ashamed because I was the son of Thanasis Panagopoulos. Yet I say the “Our Father” while behaving like a wild beast. Can I have God as my Father and conduct myself like that? Should I not be ashamed to say such things? It is impossible. And yet many of us have not grasped this as deeply as we should. Before you rush to the Court of Appeal, before you go to the Supreme Court, before you go to court at all, or do anything else, ask God to give you strength. Before discussing the matter with anyone, say, “My God, You have said this and this.” The other person is a fallen human being. You cannot claim to be My child while insulting another. You cannot say the “Our Father,” have a Father in Heaven, and behave like a wild beast in this world. How can these things go together? They cannot. Yet we do not pay enough attention to this. He continues:
You who read the passage, pay attention: “Pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” Pray. Do you see where He tells us to take refuge? If we do not pray, we will remain unarmed, and that master schemer will overcome us. He will whisper, “What are you saying? Look what he did to you! Did you hear what he said? He said it about you.” Then he comes alongside as though to defend you, pretending to care. Yet he himself provoked the other person against you; then he jumps over to your side and says, “Did you see what happened?” Finally he seizes both of us and knocks our heads together, while we cry, “It is his fault! It is the other one’s fault! This person is to blame, that person is to blame—but not us.” Why? Because we did not take refuge in God through prayer and say, “We are in danger now; I beg You. We are at sea, and the ship is rolling. Guard us, gather us in, for we are perishing.”
Some people have been enemies for years—some openly, others with their hostility lying dormant. For years they carry an enmity buried within them, never bringing it to the surface, yet it remains there. A telephone call moved me deeply the other day. A woman called me, weeping and lamenting, and told me that after thirty-two years she had finally received forgiveness from another soul. Perhaps that seems strange to you, but it affected me so deeply that I thanked God. I rose from my desk, turned toward the icon, and said, “My God, I thank You for allowing this—for the joy that has come both in Heaven and to this soul.”
From far away on the telephone came the words, “I forgive you.” Although there was noise on the line and the other person was far away, making clear communication difficult, she nevertheless heard those words. Perhaps the angel of peace himself carried them to her. She heard, “I forgive you,” and sobbed with joy, because she had finally made contact and been reconciled with a soul from whom she had been cut off—separated—for thirty-two years. Do you know how many unhappy people there are like this? And yet, sadly, they try to dress the matter up and justify it in their own way. These things remain hanging there as though from hooks; they do not come loose, dissolve, or get paid off, even if you were to gnaw at their roots for a million years.
Your sin will not depart unless it is confessed, unless the hand of forgiveness is extended, unless you say, “Forgive me.” There is no salvation otherwise. We will find all these things still hanging there on that day. We justify ourselves by saying, “You know, God, it was his fault; it was her fault,” and we search for legal arguments and the like. It is useless; there is no excuse. You may struggle for years, but when Christ sees that you are striving and truly willing, though in your weakness you cannot accomplish it for one reason or another, He will find a way to help you make peace before you leave this world. For if you do not make peace in this world, you will have no peace in the next. That whole world is true peace. “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” The peace of God is different from human peace. If you go out into New York, you will see doves.
You will see statues proclaiming liberty and similar things. It is all laughable. If you go to Russia, they speak of liberty, peace, and the like. These human claims are false. Human peace is one thing; the peace of God is another. When the peace of God enters a person, it is so overwhelming that it drives him beside himself. This is the peace which, according to Paul, “surpasses all understanding.” A person is beside himself with wonder. Human nature cannot contain the peace of God; it cannot. We merely taste it, insofar as God permits and grants us the gift, and so we know what peace is. When a person receives this grace, this peace, he will love everyone. Those who harmed him he will regard as his foremost benefactors.
He will esteem those who once harmed him more highly than his father, his mother, or his godmother, because these people are his benefactors. Their names should be written first on the list we take to the Church: “These are the benefactors of my soul.” For another person’s malice helps me become holy.
Some people say, “I want to become holy, but I cannot, because they will not let me.” Do you truly mean that? The very people who will not let you are the ones through whom you will become holy. If Satan were removed from the picture, no one would be saved. Satan is the touchstone. An evil person is like the touchstone jewelers use to test a wedding ring and determine whether it is fourteen-karat, twenty-four-karat, or whatever its purity may be. In the same way, through that person, a man will measure himself.
From that, he will understand whether he has made any spiritual progress, whether he has advanced at all. For...
Kingdom! Therefore, He says here, “so that you may become sons of your Father in heaven, for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” He makes no distinction. The same sun shines upon the one who blasphemes Him, upon the one who refuses to acknowledge Him, upon the fornicator and the adulterer; it washes and cleanses and dries even the murderer’s blood—everything. It shines in every direction, without distinction. This is not because it lacks the power to distinguish—may it never be! Could anyone really believe that the sun is unable to do so? That is the far-fetched claim made by some who write about this passage. Are you serious? I will direct you to read about the plagues of Pharaoh. There, among the plagues of Pharaoh, you will find one instance where it says:
There was darkness for three days. And what happened? In the very same house, the Hebrews had light, while the Egyptians had none. The darkness was so dense that not one of the Egyptians moved for three days. The Hebrews had light, and the Egyptians did not. Yet it was the same sun. It had not changed, nor had its machinery broken down. It was still the sun. So it has the power to make a distinction, but the issue lies with us, not with the sun. The sun, then, He says, rises upon all. That is how I want you to be as well. And here there is a thought that should concern every human being. With these words, of course, He makes the point: you must become sons of your Father.
You are to become children of your Father—that is, children of God. Someone may ask, “But are human beings not children of God?” No, they are not children of God. They are God’s creatures, created by God. The children of God are those who have received Christ. “But as many as received Him”—Christ—“to them He gave the right to become children of God.” If you have not received Christ, you are not a child of God. You are God’s creature; you are His creation. Read John 1:12, and you will find these words I am telling you. Those who received Christ: when you take Christ into yourself, when you accept Him and receive Him in Holy Communion, you become His brother and, by extension, a child of His Father.
Christ is our Brother, and the believer is His younger brother. Both are children of God: the one by nature, the other by grace. Therefore, if I have no relationship with Christ, I am not a child of the Father; I am not a child of God, and I cannot say the “Our Father.” If I say the “Our Father,” claiming in this sense that I have a Father in heaven, I am lying. And you know that there are not only children of God, but also children of the devil. If, for example, you turn to John 8:44, you will see Christ saying there to the Jews: “You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out the desires of your father.” So there are children of God, and there are also children of the devil. Those who receive Christ and remain close to Christ...
Those who remain in the Church and participate in the Mysteries have God as their Father, Christ as their brother, and the Church as their mother. But those who are far away are with the so-called “other one,” the master schemer, and there things are quite different. Yet there is a misunderstanding, one that you yourselves have surely noticed many times. There are people who have no relationship whatsoever with God, nothing to do with the Church, nothing to do with the clergy, and nothing to do with the Mysteries...
They even blaspheme there, and so on. But if something happens to them, they demand an explanation from God. If they fall ill, have an accident, or suffer some other misfortune, they hold God responsible: “It is His fault.” As one Father of the Church says, “In vain do those who serve the interests of the devil appeal to God’s compassion and forbearance.” But where have you ever sought God?
When have you ever spoken about God? You are always blaspheming Him. You have torn your priests to pieces; you have gnawed away at them. You have attacked everything. And now you speak about God, every now and then? “In vain,” he says, “do those who serve the interests of the devil appeal to the compassion of God, who is patient but also just, and who lets no one off.”
Yes, God is longsuffering and bears with you, but God also punishes. Unfortunately, many of us want our Christ to be lame, with only one leg: love and nothing else. That is also how they want union now—on the basis of love alone. Yes, but God is also justice. God is not lame. God has two legs. He is indeed longsuffering and abundant in mercy, waiting for man to come to metanoia, to repentance; but He is also just.
He also has a sword that cuts, and consequently...
He will also exact justice, of course, but at an appointed time, for He does not intervene immediately in every evil, every injustice, or everything that people consider unjust. God’s justice does not intervene at once, and we do not see it immediately. So we think that God is unjust. No, God is not unjust. But here is what happens—and people could understand this if only they would read and pay attention. First of all, they must know that Christ did not come into the world to pass judgment. Rather, Christ was judged by us; He did not judge the world. Is that not what happened? We put Him on trial, while He has not yet put us on trial. “I did not come,” He says. That is the point!
This is what it means. It is as Scripture says: “He did not come to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” God the Father, as it were, lowered a rope to us, and that rope is Christ, saying, “Take hold of it and be saved.” Of course, some refuse to make use of it. Peter says something in one of his epistles—I do not know whether you have found it. It is in his second epistle, chapter three, verse nine: “The Lord is not slow concerning His promise”—the promise of His coming, of justice, and of punishment. “He is not slow, but longsuffering.” The Greek word for longsuffering is a compound word: He keeps His anger far away; He postpones it. “He is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish”—that any should be lost—“but that all should come to metanoia, to repentance.”
He gives us time, he says. He postpones judgment; He postpones punishment. He does not cut off hands or feet, put out eyes, or cut off reproductive organs in order forcibly to eradicate sin and bring it to an end.
He is long-suffering. Let me remind you: once, during the Occupation, He punished an illicit couple. They went to commit an indecent act on a grave in the cemetery outside Tripoli, right on the marble slab, and became stuck together as dogs do. They remained there, joined together, and had to undergo surgery the next day. God does punish, but because He is long-suffering, He does not strike us down the moment He catches us in the act.
We think it does not exist. But God’s justice does exist, as I have told you before. What is the axe spoken of by the Holy Forerunner, the axe that lies at the root of the tree? That is God’s justice. But for an axe to cut, someone must one day take it in his hand. Christ has not yet taken it in His hand. When He comes, He will take it—and woe to us when He does. That is what this reminds us of. Some ignorant iconographers paint blood on the blade, supposing that this is the axe with which the Forerunner was beheaded. It is not. The Holy Forerunner said, “Behold, the axe lies at the root of the tree.” In other words, He will come, take it, and clear everything away. He has not done so yet. For the time being, it is we who have done away with our Christ. He has not yet cleared everything away. But one day He will come and take up that axe. And there is something else which I have told you before, but it is especially relevant to the present subject.
For those who do not know, there is something in the church that calls to mind the judgment which is not being exercised today. It is what is known as the bishop’s throne. If you go into a church and reflect on what you see, studying the holy icons, the oil lamps, and everything else, you will notice that all the icons on the iconostasis—the icons of the Lord, the Theotokos, and the Saints—have an oil lamp burning before them. The bishop’s throne, however, has no lamp. Why is that? I asked someone, and he said to me, “Father, it has no lamp because the bishop’s mitre might strike it.” Bless his soul, I said, could they not place it higher, beyond the bishop’s reach, so that he would not strike it? That is not the reason. That is the throne.
Judgment. At the Beautiful Gate, where we see our Most Holy Theotokos with Christ, is the throne of grace. “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” And Christ gives His Body and His Blood for the remission of sins and eternal life. He takes the little soul that receives Holy Communion and leads it through the Beautiful Gate. Why is it called the Beautiful Gate? Is it more beautiful than the others? Because through it souls enter the Kingdom of Heaven. They do not enter through the coffeehouse, nor through the so-called good works that the world speaks of. The Body and Blood of Christ, and the Holy Chalice, are the entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. And all those who, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, are not reconciled with Christ so that He may give them their ticket to the Kingdom of Heaven will remain in their sins, and one day they will come before the throne for judgment.
The hierarch’s throne represents judgment, and judgment is without mercy. Tears will not avail there, nor will pleas. There is justice; and to remind us that there is no mercy at the Judgment, the Church places neither candle nor oil there. Do you think the Orthodox churches are merely shops run by priests, as the heretics accuse us of being? Everything speaks: where each thing is placed, what has been placed there, and what takes place there. Everything has meaning. But because we are uninstructed, we do not even know what any of it is about. That is precisely why we say what we say and think as we think. “He is not slow,” Peter says. He will come, and woe to the person who is not found ready. Therefore, if a person wishes to be called a child of God, he must…
he must also bear the corresponding marks. Those who continue to harbor resentment and remain hostile—even when, as we human beings would say, they are justified—have no relationship with God. Listen, in simple terms, to what John Chrysostom says about the subject we are discussing. John Chrysostom says: “There is nothing that God hates and turns away from so much.” Do you hear the word he uses? He says that God hates. Can that be possible?
Of a tree. It does him such great harm that God hates and abhors such a person, and turns away from him as one who bears resentment and clings to anger. “How can you expect the Master to be merciful and gentle with you when you have treated your fellow servant harshly?” How can you expect the Master, Christ, to be gentle with you and coddle you, when you yourself have been harsh toward your fellow servant? How can you behave like a wild beast toward another human being? Of course, the answer comes at once: “He insulted me, he wronged me, he did this and that to me,” and so on. Indeed, many people say this to the priests they visit for Holy Confession, when the priests urge them to forgive so that they may receive Holy Communion: “If you were in my place, Father, you would not forgive either.” One hears this said many times. But here the holy Father anticipates the objection and says: “But did your fellow servant insult you? Did he revile you? And because of that, you...”}]} הערכים.
Do you not insult God many times over? Have you never sinned? Are you as innocent as a dove? Have you never offended God? And how can a fellow servant be compared with the Master? What weight does the wrong or insult another person has inflicted on you have beside the wrong you commit against God? That person may have insulted you in the heat of passion, perhaps believing himself wronged. You may have harmed him or treated him unjustly. Someone may have gone to him and slandered you; without investigating, he formed a hostile opinion of you and became angry. But you insult God though He has done you no wrong. God has never wronged you. How can you insult Him when no one has even influenced you against Him, but instead you receive blessings from Him every single day? What defense or excuse could you possibly offer?
Will we find any justification or forgiveness from God? Consider this carefully: if God chose to examine with strict justice everything we have done against Him, we would not live a single day. If God allowed His justice to call you to account and judge you every day for the sins you commit, He would not leave you even one more day of life upon the earth. He would punish you at once, destroy you, and sweep you from the face of the earth. And John Chrysostom continues:
“We would not live a single day.” For Scripture says, “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” Yet we never stop to think what would happen if He demanded an account from us. We are always demanding an account from the other person—but what about our own account? You remember the parable of the ten thousand talents. It teaches that a person’s sin against God—his disobedience and his transgression of God’s law and commandments—is reckoned as a debt of ten thousand talents.
But an injustice, offense, or injury committed by one person against another is reckoned as a hundred denarii. Ten thousand talents amounted to six million drachmas before the war, while a hundred denarii amounted to seventy drachmas. Whatever wrong you may do to me, or I to you, is reckoned as seventy drachmas. Yet the smallest transgression of God’s law is reckoned as six million. Who ever thinks of this? You demand revenge from the other person, satisfaction, and a humbling apology. Yes—but if God also demands payment from you, where will you stand? We demand the other person’s hundred denarii without taking our own ten thousand talents into account. And you remember
what consequences followed from what that servant did: “Go,” the master says, “seize the man whose debt of ten thousand talents I forgave.” For when I go to Holy Confession and confess even one sin, God forgives me a debt of six million. Yet when another person damages my property, offends me, or harms me, I go and throttle him over seventy drachmas. That is how God reckons it, because one thing is an injustice against a fellow human being, and another is an injustice against God. One is an offense against what is finite; the other is an offense against the perfect and eternal God. So think of it in this way. “Seize him,” He says, “and cast him into prison until he has paid the very last penny.” “So also,” He says, “will our heavenly Father do to you, unless you forgive the trespasses of others from your hearts.” It is one thing merely to say the words: “Go on, receive Holy Communion. All right, good morning.”
But it is another thing to forgive from your hearts. You should never have reason to believe that I have ever wished you harm. If you did something to me, I do not know why you did it. May God Himself not hold it against you. That is what it means to forgive from your hearts. And you know that a person in prison cannot repay even a single penny of his debt, because a prisoner has no means to do so. And I do not think our Christ made a mistake. What He said was exactly right.
And so we come to what He requires of us: “Therefore, become perfect,” He says. Perfect. He is not speaking about a machine. When we buy a machine, for example, we refuse to accept one with a defect, even if only a screw worth a penny is faulty. How, then, can you call yourself a perfect human being while bearing such fundamental faults, and still expect to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? We will not enter. I am sorry, but we will not, unless we correct ourselves.
Our life here has another purpose: that we should become perfect. And becoming a perfect human being is no small matter. A person must labor, must first truly desire it, and must obey. Nor is perfection merely worldly or merely spiritual. When Christ says “perfect” here, He does not simply mean someone who avoids stepping on ants while at the same time killing children. He does not mean someone who abstains from oil while wronging his neighbor and drinking his blood. That is not what He means. Perfection means that a person must be exemplary in his relationships with others, but also in his relationship with Heaven, because he is going to live in Heaven; he is going to live in a kingdom. He must become a child of the King, perfect both in spirit and in body. Yet there is one word in the phrase “become perfect” that calls for further
discussion and explanation. We have no more time. We shall stop here and, God willing, continue next time. Amen.

Ανθρώπινη λογική, με ανθρώπινη δύναμη, δεν μπορείς να το εφαρμόσεις αυτό. Τι θα γίνει λοιπόν τώρα; Θα πάμε στην κόλαση, Κύριε; Εγώ δεν το μπορώ. Τι θα γίνει; Εκεί λοιπόν, σε αυτό το ερώτημα, σε αυτό το δίλημμα που έρχεται ο καθένας μας πολλές φορές στη ζωή του, εκ περιτροπής. Άλλοι έχουν εγκαταστήσει, έχουν μονιμότητα έτσι. Μόνιμα έχουν εχθρούς. Και δεν εφρόντισαν να το λύσουν το θέμα. Διότι φτάνουν εκεί: δεν τον μπορώ. Δεν μπορώ να τον βλέπω. Δεν μπορώ να την ακούω. Δεν μπορώ να τη συναντώ. Δεν θέλω να ακούω γι' αυτή, ούτε γι' αυτόν, ξέρω εγώ. Χίλια δυο πράγματα προβάλλουμε εμείς. Εκεί λοιπόν θα γίνει το ερώτημα, όπως είπα γρηγορότερα: «Πώς, Κύριε, θα κολαστώ; Δεν το μπορώ εγώ». Ξέρετε ποια θα είναι η απάντηση;
Ανεβαίνεις. Χτίζεις, ανεβαίνεις. Έτσι δεν είναι; Πώς στον χριστιανισμό θα έρθουν τελείως αντίθετα; Εδώ λοιπόν το μεγαλύτερο έπαθλο θα το πάρει ο άνθρωπος, εάν κατορθώσει να αγαπήσει τον εχθρό του. Ένας ερμηνευτής της πρώτης Εκκλησίας λέγει το εξής: «Κορωνίς γαρ και κορυφή πάσης αρετής, το αγαπάν τους εχθρούς». Διάδημα, λέει, κορώνη πάσης αρετής είναι το να έχεις τη δύναμη ή να αγωνιστείς να αποκτήσεις τη δύναμη, με τη χάρη του Θεού, το αγαπάν τους εχθρούς. «Αγαπάν δε αυτούς, ου καθό εισί εχθροί, αλλά καθό εισί άνθρωποι». Τον αγαπώ γιατί είναι πόρνος;
βλασφημούν εκεί ακόμη και λοιπά. Αν του συμβεί κάτι, ζητάνε τον λόγο από τον Θεό. Αν του συμβεί κάτι, κάποια αρρώστια, ένα ατύχημα, κάτι κ.λπ., ζητάνε από τον Θεό. Αυτός φταίει. «Ματαίως», λέγει ένας πατήρ της Εκκλησίας, «οἱ ὑπηρετοῦντες τὰ συμφέροντα τοῦ διαβόλου ἐπικαλοῦνται τὴν εὐσπλαχνίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τὸ μακρόθυμον τοῦ Θεοῦ». Και πού τον είδες τον Θεό εσύ;
να έχει και τα γνωρίσματα τα σχετικά. Αυτοί οι οποίοι μένουν εν μνησικακία, μένουν με την εχθρότητα, έστω και δικαιολογημένα, όπως λέμε εμείς οι άνθρωποι, δεν έχουν σχέση με τον Θεό. Ακούσετε με απλά λόγια μια γνώμη του θείου Χρυσοστόμου επάνω σε αυτό το θέμα που ομιλούμε. Λέγει λοιπόν ο θείος Χρυσόστομος το εξής: «Ουδέν γαρ ούτως ο Θεός μισεί και αποστρέφεται». Ακούτε τη λέξη που βάζει; Ότι μισεί ο Θεός. Είναι δυνατόν;
τον Θεό δεν βρίζεις πολλάκις; Σαν αμάρτησες εσύ; Είσαι περιστέρι εσύ; Δεν έφταιξες ποτέ του Θεού; Πού δε ίσον σύνδουλος και Δεσπότης; Ποια αξία έχει η αδικία ή η ύβρις που σου έκανε ο άνθρωπος εν σχέσει με εκείνη που κάνεις εσύ στον Θεό; Και ούτος μεν εκ πάθους και ηδικημένος ίσως ύβρισε. Μπορεί να τον έβλαψες, μπορεί να τον αδίκησες, μπορεί κάποιος πήγε, σε συκοφάντησε και δεν εξήτασε και τον διέθεσε κακώς εναντίον σου και παροξύνθη. Συ δε τον Θεόν υβρίζεις, ουκ αδικούμενος. Ο Θεός δεν σε αδίκησε ποτέ. Πώς εσύ τον υβρίζεις, ουδέ επηρεαζόμενος, αλλά ευεργετούμενος υπ’ αυτού καθ’ εκάστην ημέραν; Τι να έχεις ως απολογίαν ή συγγνώμη;
