Summary
The lecture resumes a series on the Evangelical Law in Matthew 5, arriving at verse 43 and Christ's completion of the old commandment 'love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' Christ does not abolish but modifies this law, replacing a defensive command with an offensive mission — 'go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.' Drawing on the Good Samaritan, the martyrdom of Stephen, Sirach's image of the burning coal, and Romans 12's call to be at peace with all, he urges hearers to speak well of adversaries, refuse retaliation, and ask Christ for the strength to love when the will is weak.

Greetings. Our subjects have been following a series on the Evangelical Law, and specifically on the fifth chapter of Matthew. Two other talks came in between because of the feast of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, and tonight, with God's help, we return to where we were. From my notes I see that we are in the fifth chapter, at verse 43 and following, where it speaks about the completion of the old law.
Earlier He reminded us to watch out for adultery, which can be committed even with the eyes; to be careful not to swear falsely; to be careful not to go to law against one another. And now He comes and speaks to us about our conduct toward our neighbour. "You have heard that it was said" — that is, "You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy."
And indeed it was written in Deuteronomy 7:1-2.
You read it in the Old Testament — you must have come across this — and also in the twenty-third chapter of Deuteronomy, verse 6. "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who insult you and persecute you, so that you may become sons of your Father who is in heaven." He comes and says exactly the opposite of what the law said in the Old Testament. There it said that a person should hate his enemies.
Here He says that a person should love his enemies. I don't know whether this has ever troubled you: how do we account for one and the same God counselling and saying that a person should hate his fellow man, and then this same God now coming and saying that a person should love his fellow man — his enemies there, his enemies here? It is a detail that has not been noticed, and it scandalizes certain people. Enemies in that era were those people who believed in other gods.
Idolaters — people who fought against the true God, the one God. These were the enemies of the Jews, the enemies of the people of Israel. Enemies with respect to their faith. Not an enemy because his goat got into my garden, or because he insulted me, or because he wronged me. They were spiritual enemies, enemies in matters of religion; and since God did not want His own people to have dealings with them — because there was every likelihood that they would lose their true faith and learn their sins as well — for exactly this reason He laid it down as law that they should hate them.
That was His purpose. God's purpose was good when He gave such a commandment at that time. He did not give that commandment there at random; He gave it there for a specific reason. So the aim of the Mosaic law was that they should hate the idolaters, those who had graven images — these were the enemies. Just as we today do not see who our spiritual enemies are. And even we today have such a commandment: not to say good morning to the enemies of the faith. Whoever does not bring this teaching, it says, do not give him a greeting; those who do not accept Christ, we are not to greet. Doesn't Scripture say that? Doesn't John say it? So something of this kind was going on.
If you also read Psalm 105, you will find some words there that justify what I am telling you. "They did not destroy the nations, as the Lord had told them, but they mingled with the nations and learned their works, and served their graven images, and it became a stumbling block to them." God told them to hate them; but they did not hate them, they did not keep away from them, they did not keep them at a distance. They formed relationships and friendships. And what happened? "They mingled with the nations" — they mixed in with the nations — "and learned their works, and served their graven images" — they became idolaters, they made carved gods — "and it became a stumbling block to them."
There was a purpose. That is the kind of hatred it was, that is the kind of enmity it was: you shall love your own people, but you shall hate your enemy, the enemy of the faith. Now Christ comes in the other place and says: you shall love your enemy. Christ now does away with this. And instead of hatred He lays down love toward enemies as the law. And today too there are idolaters, there are the nations. But He sent the Apostles out to the nations, to preach, to make disciples of the nations. "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." He sent people, but today He sent people full of grace, strong people, ones who would not be swept away.
Today they are the ones who draw others along.
That is the reason. There He acted rightly, and here He acted rightly. That hatred of the enemies was holy, and it is holy today to love your enemy. There are specific reasons, and if you do not place them correctly you are scandalized. God legislated defensively: no, guard yourselves, keep them far away. Christ legislated offensively: go, make disciples of them, speak to them, preach to them, baptize them, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. That is the reason, and today it is not placed where certain people place it.
They are scandalized, thinking that God was harsh. There was a specific reason why He was harsh. How many times does a father or a mother, seeing that in the neighbourhood, or at school, or somewhere else there is bad company that can do harm to their boy, do harm to their girl — how many times do they not threaten the child? Of course they threaten: "Don't you dare, I'll break your legs; don't you dare speak with her; don't you dare keep company with them." Not out of malice, but out of love for their child. They set up an enmity against the other person's child, because they know that harm will come of it if they let their child keep that company. Something like that is how a person should get it into his head that this commandment was placed there: "You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemies."
That is how it was said back then. Now I come and take this law and I modify it. I do not abolish it, I modify it: and where there was hatred, I now put love. I had given hatred at that time so that they could defend themselves, so that they would not be swept away and so that this very thing would not happen. Because David wrote by the Holy Spirit what I told you: "They did not destroy the nations" — they did not clear them out — "as the Lord had told them," He who told them to destroy them, "but they mingled with the nations" — they went along with them — "and they learned their works, and they served their graven images, and it became a stumbling block to them." There are another five or six verses. A whole series of charges, because they did not keep what God had told them. They made friendship where God had told them to keep enmity. We have the notion that we can correct even God.
There are times when we have the notion that our own feelings are higher than God's. Many times. God has never once made a mistake. He always says things rightly, He says them beautifully, perfectly, in the way that is to our benefit. But we do not understand why He gives them to us in that way, and we end up with the opposite results. That is the reason. "But I say to you," He says, "love your enemies." Now, that is a difficult thing. Difficult. First of all, we have not grasped what the word "enemy" means. We put him far off and we get him in our sights. Ready, if it were possible — bang — to shoot him down and wipe him out. And what will come of that? Many people even pray for God to do it.
For God to wipe their enemies off the face of the earth, because at some point those enemies hurt them, or because they keep on hurting them. At some point they said harsh words; at some point somebody ruined a marriage match for them; at some point somebody spoiled their good mood; at some point over some piece of business, I don't know what — when many times these so-called enemies, these bad people, are instruments of God. They showed their own malice, and yet good came out of it for us. Was it out of love that the Jews raised our Christ up on the Cross? And yet who was served by it? Was it out of love that they cut off the head of the Honourable Forerunner? And yet a divine dispensation was accomplished there.
"You proclaimed the good news to those in Hades, of God made manifest in the flesh." But we sit and busy ourselves with the person and with the deed. Yet with our responsibility before God, who said "Love your enemy" — with that we do not busy ourselves. And many times we reach the point where, even to the spiritual father who in his way is pressing us for our own good — that we must forgive, that we must say good morning, and so on — we have the nerve to say to him: "You too, Father, if you were in my position, you wouldn't be saying that good morning. You ought to know what he has done to me, what she has done to me, or what he says, or what she says." And the enmity stays right where it is. And at the same time, of course, we are there in our church.
We even go to Vespers, we go on the great feasts, at Pascha we hold the candle. We receive the Great Blessing of the Waters at Theophany, we keep our feasts, our icon corner is in good order, our incense is there — but the malice is still malice. Our Christ wants a person to struggle in the very place where He has put him. We slip away from there and go looking for some other way to please God. God is not pleased by it. You saw Peter: "No, Lord, it isn't a fitting thing for You, the Teacher, to wash my feet." "Then out," He tells him, "you have no part with Me." He was dumbfounded; when he saw that the Lord was sending him away — "then not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well," as we were saying before. The same thing happens with us.
"You want me to do works of mercy for You? Then do your works of mercy." "I don't want anything from you. I want you, right here where I have placed you, to forgive your enemy. I will accept nothing else from you. Right here where I have placed you is where you will sit your examination." And this is not the only such area. There are many areas like this in which we try to slip away. "Of course," a woman says to me, "my husband is ill" — "Oh, Mr. Panagopoulos," she says, "I have lost the hospital visits, I have lost the prison visits, I have lost all of that." "Seriously?" I say to her. "Of course," she says, "I long for them, because," she says, "my husband is ill." You are the one going through the hospital now, in your own home, and you are the one in prison, and in prison in a special way. Your own person has to get well first, before you go off to the others. Your own — isn't he your own? Isn't he a human being belonging to God?
You have to look after your own person, the one who is permanently bedridden, because he is ill — and you say you're not going to see the others. These things don't sit well with people who have any sense. We want, in our own way, at all costs, to please God. No — right here where I put you, here. Whether you like it or not. "But this is what I like." Does anything at all happen that God does not know about? What is there that happens — which leaf falls from the tree, which hair falls from our head, which sparrow falls to the ground — that God does not know about and that does not take His permission before it happens? And even so, is it a chance event that you have an enemy? Is it a chance event that you find yourself next to a neighbour who grills his fish from morning till night? Is it a chance event?
Aren't you thankful to God that you don't have one like that above you as well, and you only have the one beside you? That you don't have one on the other side either, and you only have the one beside you? Because you couldn't have borne any more than that. Think about things a little along these lines. Don't make yourself out to be a butterfly and believe that all you need in your life is applause and flowers and roses. All these things are giving you the opportunity. To sit your examinations. To be put in the pot and boiled, and boiled again, so that the foreign matter comes out of you. You have heard about gold: they boil it and boil it again so the foreign matter comes out of it. "Tried as gold in the fire," it says. Nothing is by chance. So this, then, is the commandment.
"I just can't do it anymore." Now that takes us somewhere else, and we'll discuss it: why can't you? Is it that you can't, or that you don't want to? I'll find the "I don't want to" in you. The doctor who comes, your spiritual father, has to find the "I don't want to" in you. And Christ will find that you don't want to. From the moment you do want it, it will happen. Because you will ask for it deep within, from Christ. And if you say to Him, "My Christ, You said to love my enemy. Right now I don't have that strength inside me. I beg You — but I want it. Help me. Help me, I beg You, I want it" — from that moment things change.
Things change from that moment on.
We don't want to, because there is egotism in us. We haven't grasped exactly what it is He is asking of us. We love our friends, our own people, the ones who treat us with honour, the ones who flatter us, the ones we have interests with, the ones we enjoy ourselves with, the ones we sit and eat with. That's why we hear so often, "I'm a good person, as long as nobody bothers me." But if somebody so much as touches me, I go out of my mind. And you call yourself good? Well, look at you. Shall we hang a charm around your neck so nobody gives you the evil eye? Who told you that you're good, if you're only good as long as nobody bothers you?
Look at the three categories in the parable of the Good Samaritan. You saw the robbers, you saw the Priest and the Levite, and you saw the Samaritan. What is the difference between what these three kinds of people did? The first robbed. The second gave nothing — but they also took nothing. The third took nothing, but he gave. Which one was called blessed? The last one, the one who gave without taking anything.
The robbers took. "What's yours is mine." The Priest and the Levite took nothing from the man — but they gave him nothing either.
That's the category of, "Well, I don't bother anybody." But the third one — he not only took nothing, he gave, and he sacrificed. He interrupted his own business. He offered what he was carrying with him for his journey. He gave the coins he had on him, and he promised the rest as well, the whole cost of the man's recovery. Now who is the complete one? That is what a person's sacrifice looks like. That is the real Christian. Not the one who says, "I don't bother anybody, so I'm good" — good only for as long as nobody bothers him. When I have the devil inside me and I leave him undisturbed, does he come out? He does not. So don't disturb him! The moment I do disturb him, things change. From the moment I start making war on him and telling him no, he starts in with his own tactics. He'll come at me in his own way. That's how it is.
So let these words not slip past us. I've told you before, and I repeat it now: if the Evangelical Law is attended to and put into practice, a person doesn't merely enter Paradise — he enters into the concord, the harmony, of Paradise. Don't even read the rest of the Gospel; just read these three chapters, the fifth, the sixth and the seventh of Matthew — only make sure you put them into practice. Don't run ahead before you've applied them. "Love your enemies," He says. Those so-called enemies — and I'll take every chance I get to tell you this — are benefactors of a person's soul and even of what he owns. From the moment a person is wronged by some enemy...
...Christ has business with him. Provided that this person doesn't fight back, but says, "My Christ, You know, You understand why this is happening." Because many times something happens to our material things — a loss, a bit shaved off here, some damage — that has to happen just that way. They say that once, on a voyage, there was a traveller on board who had a monkey with him. There were many people in the little boat, and one of them had lain down and gone to sleep. The monkey slipped its master's chain, crept over, and took the man's wallet.
It climbed up the mast and started throwing the money into the sea. Meanwhile the man woke up and was horrified. And there it was, throwing his money away. Now this man was a milkman. Somebody said to him, "Let it throw all of it in." Whatever belongs to the water, he said, it will throw away — and it will bring the rest back down. And the monkey brought about a quarter of the money back down to him; the rest it threw into the water. It was the water he had been putting in the milk, so into the water it went. See how strange it is — see what dishonest gain produces. If we were willing to reflect on why something happened to us, we would find the reason. And if we couldn't find it and asked Christ, saying, "What do You want to teach us by this? What is this illness for?"...
...what is this hardship for, what is this persecution for, what is this trouble for, what is it all for — we would find the reason. But instead we play the fool, as they say. We're the saints, naturally: we're the ones being tempted, we're the ones being harmed, we're the ones surrounded by enemies. If only we knew that these people are our benefactors! When we go to church and hand in the names for commemoration, theirs should go in first — before our own, before our children's. Because they benefit us both spiritually and materially. Christ is ready to bless a person and to help him. So the enemy is not an enemy in the way we imagine.
In between there stands Christ, who takes this enemy and his actions against us and alters them in such a way as to bless us. It comes out for our good. But we haven't taken hold of it this way, and so it doesn't come about. Now, He isn't speaking here about the world outside. He is speaking to Christians, to people who practise their faith, who say they love Christ, who go to church, who light candles, who bring the offering, who receive Holy Communion often. You know, there are many people who go all the way up to Holy Communion, and even so they feel something inside gnawing at them, biting at them. We know that feeling. "Bless," He says next...
..."bless those who curse you." Bless those who curse you. Do you know what that means? Instead of the opposite, you are to pray for good things for the very people who move against you, whether in word or in deed. That is, the one who speaks against us, the one who acts against us, would normally expect an answer in kind. But he must not get that from a Christian. He must get the exact opposite. In other words, we are to look for ways to conquer evil with good.
In my first years as a Christian, when I returned to Christ, I had a Russian confessor, Father Efthymios, a man of discernment. He was at the church of the Holy Unmercenaries in Psyrri. He has since fallen asleep in the Lord. We used to have our squabbles among the brethren, and he would say to me, "Dimitri, be careful. When they throw walnuts at you, you throw figs. Don't throw walnuts back." Dimitri, what he told me means this: I am not to return evil for evil. As a Christian I am always obliged to find some way...
...to do good to that very person who speaks evil of me, who harms me, who wrongs me in all sorts of ways. That is the meaning of "bless those who curse you." That is, always be inventing good things for the very people who are acting against you.
And it's true, we say, "I don't wish them any harm." Yes, you don't wish them harm — but you don't wish them any good either. That's the issue. The point is that a person mustn't stop halfway. "I don't wish him harm. I know what they do, I know what they say, but I don't say anything."
"...not till the Second Coming. I won't do it." But if the chance is given to you to speak well of them — that's the issue, and you won't do it. Christianity is a lofty thing; Christianity isn't rough concrete work. We don't move into an apartment just because the concrete and the slabs and the marble have been laid. It's all the fine work afterwards that makes it fit to live in. And for Christ to enter into a soul, He looks at exactly these details, at where a person stands. Many times we hear, "I told my husband" — or "I told my wife" — "I'm not taking him to court, I'm not taking them to court, I've left them to God." Is that an answer for Christians? "What was I supposed to do, drag him into court?"
But that answer isn't a Christian one either, because "I've left him to God" — do you know what it really means? It means: I can't gouge his eye out myself, because I'm too weak; he has so much backing, he has money, he'd win. So I've left him to God up above, and God will settle accounts with him. But it isn't like that at all. The Protomartyr Stephen said, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Don't call them to account for it, don't examine it. I have no claim against them at all. "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And our Christ said the same. And many people bring this up here, because they stop at a glib, throwaway answer.
"He was Christ, so of course He said it — 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.' Well, Christ is Christ." But Stephen wasn't Christ, was he? Wasn't Stephen a man like us? And he said almost exactly those same words. The Lord also found an excuse for them before the justice of His Father: they don't know what they are doing. The people were in confusion. "I beg You, let them be, until our heads clear" — as though to put it that way. And the Protomartyr Stephen did exactly the same, and more. What do we do in such a case? We do leave it to God, of course — but with the idea that He'll punish the person as he deserves. And that has no such value in God's eyes.
It's another thing to say: may you not have to answer for it before God, may God not hold it against you — go with God's blessing. Perhaps I deserved what you did to me, and you are simply an instrument carrying out God's justice. In His love God sent you so that I could pay now, so that we wouldn't be condemned on that Day. Put it that way and see what relief you'll feel. Put it that way and see what would happen in the human race — if we would only put it that way. We always present ourselves as the injured party. Yet how often we're the ones who actually provoke the anger. And if God permits it, or overlooks it, for example — and we don't grow steadily, in temptations, in the crosses we carry, in persecutions, in being spoken ill of, and I don't know what else.
If God permits it, then again we ought to give thanks to God.
God allowed a certain person to come across our path who will help us clear up certain debts we owe to the justice of God. So it is not the way we set it up in our own nous, our own mind, and Christ has made no mistake here. Look, then, at what he does to you and at what you do. If you do exactly what he does to you, if you dance to whatever tune he plays, then you have not taken a single step in Christianity. You should always be above him; you should aim to be better than him, to give good where he gives you evil. That is the thought here, where it says, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you — the ones who hate you.
If that person ever crosses your bow, you will do him good. They must never find out that you spoke against them. But we make a point of finding the moment and the hour to speak against someone. Wherever we happen to be, we talk about how we were wronged. Many people are not even ashamed to come out and criticise their own children. When someone criticises their children, they are criticising their own face. When someone criticises their parents, they are criticising themselves. Why are you criticising me, your parent? Why are you criticising your children to me, your wife to me, your husband to me — for what reason? And I am not talking now about coming to me, because someone may say, I find myself in a temptation and I would like some advice. It is another matter to ask me if something happens to you.
You think I can help — and even then I will send you to your spiritual father; and if you have no spiritual father and I have an opinion, I will tell you, fine. But here you go down to the neighbourhood, you go to the fishmonger, you find yourself with a taxi driver — wherever you find yourself you hear the same conversation: accusations against those who are absent and those who are present. What good does it do you? That is not the point. You will speak with the best words you have, because in that way you are smoothing the ground for reconciliation. That is the reason. In the Wisdom of Sirach there is the image that when two people grow cold toward one another for whatever reason, it is as if a burning coal has come out of their mouth and is lying there. Now that coal can be put out if we spit on it, but it can also become a raging fire if we blow on it.
Out of the same mouth come both the breath and the spittle. So why do you keep discussing it and throwing wood on that fire? And many times we dress the story up to show that we are in the right, that we were wronged, and what we did for those children and what they did for us, and so on. And we have forgotten what we did to our own parents. And so it goes. We add our little lies on top, and then we tell bigger ones. And what happens then — will God help us? He does not help us. Are we smoothing the ground for peace? No, we are making the situation worse. But when the other person learns that you are speaking well of him, what happens? He starts thinking too, and says: look what I am doing to him and look what he is doing. So he is the better man. And even if, at the end of the day, he does not want to give in, to ask forgiveness or to accept forgiveness and let a truce come, so that—
—so that things can turn to love and the enmity is out of the way, still, from your own side, you have put yourself in order before God. Because you are not called to make peace in everyone's affairs; you are called, from your own side, to be at peace as far as it lies with you. Take up the twelfth chapter of Paul to the Romans and see what it says: as far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people — not with certain people, with all. As far as it depends on you. That is what is in my hands. To say good morning to you. To speak a good word where you speak an evil one. To do good where I ought to do you harm, and more besides. That is what is in my hands. Do you want to appreciate it? Appreciate it. You do not want to appreciate it? Then you will go up above and settle it with Someone else. This was what I could do from my own side. Turn it over in your nous, in your mind, something like that.
Find a way. In these cases — I have told you once before, some time ago — there is an example I read in the Gerontikon, the sayings of the elders. Those of us on the outside can help these people who have enmity between them. Friends who until yesterday were inseparable are today at each other's throats. Brothers from one womb, from one table, from one house, are at each other's throats. And often it is because those on the outside play a bad role and not a good one. They could stop being arsonists, they could stop laying dynamite on the bridges, and instead become the bridge themselves that unites those two — even at a cost, even paying money out of their own pocket so that the others may love one another. And then they would be called peacemakers and would have a share in the beatitude, that they shall be called sons of God, as we heard when we were speaking about the beatitudes. Blessed are the peacemakers, which the Evangelist mentioned earlier. One little novice built a bridge between two elders.
Satan had taken hold of them and was keeping them apart. The young disciple of one of these elders learned that his elder was not on good terms with another elder, and he was grieved, and he prayed to God to enlighten him as to what part he might play. Now what was he? A little mouse in front of two wild beasts — what part could he possibly play? And yet, when a person prays, God is inventive; He enlightens and He settles matters. So one day someone came and brought them a string of dried figs, and it came into his mind to steal four figs from that string. And when a feast was being held somewhere nearby, he asked his elder's blessing to go to that feast.
His elder said: go, but when it is over do not stay for the meal, come straight back, I am an old man here on my own. So be it blessed, he says. And the young one went. As he was going that way, he knew that somewhere nearby was also the hut of the other elder, the one his own elder was not speaking to. So he turns aside and goes there. Bless me, elder, bless me. And who are you, then? I am the monk of so-and-so. So-and-so — that was my enemy. He says yes. And how did you come here? How did I come? I came out of curiosity, he says. Out of curiosity? What curiosity? When I talk with my elder, he says, he always tells me that you should not have had me as your elder—
—you should have had that man as your elder; he is the worthy one, next to him you would have been sanctified; I am a sinful man, I know nothing. Your elder says such things about me? Yes, that is what I am telling you. And since I was going to the feast, I got curious to slip over here to meet you and receive your blessing — and in fact he gave me two figs to bring you as a token of friendship. The elder froze on the spot. My goodness — the man speaks such good words about me and even sends me figs, and I still have him in my sights. He began to reproach himself bitterly. That is what this little mouse did. Yet whenever we want to, we turn even the arteries into poison, wherever we look.
The young one went off to the feast and came back. When he returned he made a metanoia to his own elder — the prostration by which one asks forgiveness.
He says, I do not love you, elder. Why, my child, he says, why? Because you hide your virtues. I hide my virtues? Who told you that I have any virtues? I found at the feast, in such and such a way, an elder who told me many things about you — and now he tells him about the other one.
You found that man? He was at the feast. And he spoke to you about me? What did he not say to me! And in fact he gave me two figs to bring you. He takes out the other two figs he had hidden away and gives both to his elder. The elder was on fire inside. To think that he says such good things about me, and I say what I say. He began to ask God's forgiveness and to look for some moment when—
—they might be given the chance to make a prostration to one another and ask forgiveness before they died, old men that they were. This elder now — the young one, the little one — had reconciled them invisibly, in his own way, by a cunning, but a good cunning, the kind that brings forth good. The result: there was another feast nearby, and one elder went, and by God's providence the other elder went too, and they found themselves together in the church of that third monastery, and without either of them saying a word to the other, one fell into the other's arms; they embraced, they kissed, and they wept there for a long time in front of all the other fathers. Who did the job? That little mouse. If little mice do such things, what could we wild beasts do — but we do not do it. And there are still many who are estranged, many who are embittered, and so on.
We have never played any part in bringing people together; we have never once thought about the mission we have to carry out. And we ought to: a God came and hung between heaven and earth in order to unite them, earth with heaven. To reconcile these two — and here we are inside the same houses, within the same families, within the same circles of friends, and we do nothing about this thing that is spoken of here. Do good, then, as it says here, to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully treat you. Pray for those who abuse you, and pray for those who persecute you. But it is hard to get a prayer out from between our teeth for the people who have hurt us, who have embittered us. My beloved,
I tell you, if for whatever reason we remain the same, let us not expect to see the face of God. We have to reach the point where hating is something foreign to us. I do not know how people hate. I do not know how people get into quarrels, how they fight. There were once two elders who had lived together for eighty years and had never quarrelled. And one said, how is it that people quarrel, elder? Well, how would I know, he says. Why don't you come, he says, and let us have a quarrel ourselves, so we can see how quarrelling is done? He says, how are we going to manage to quarrel?
Let us put this object here, and I will say it is mine. Well, what will you say? That it is yours; and I will say it is mine, and so we will quarrel.
Very well! So one of them picks it up: this, he says, is mine. No, says the other, it is mine. And the one on this side says, no, it is mine. Ah, well then, he says, take it. That was as far as they got; they could not go any further. But things like that are just fairy tales to us, as you know. Which of us has prayed for these people? And if he prayed, he prayed that the other man's eye would be put out. He prayed that the man would not live to see the evening. He prayed for a thousand and one other things. And many times we let loose curses as well. We give thanks, and we have a medallion hanging here around our neck. We have it hanging there.
Once there was a man — he has fallen asleep now; he repented, of course, he wept bitterly — he was the cause of it: his brother, I know, had behaved badly toward him and said something along those lines to him, and he said, may you break your neck where you are going. And the man had not managed to get ten metres further on before he fell and broke his neck and was killed, and they buried him that same day. Now you will ask me what this was; well, how can I explain it? In any case, the other man had wished it on him. What happened, I do not know. I know that he said, go and break your neck where you are going. And he had not gone twenty metres before he fell on the rock and was hurled down. And he was broken to pieces. And that man wept for the rest of his life over this killing, which he had spoken and wished for. He did not do it himself; I do not know who did it.
How that wish came to pass, I do not know. In any case, at that moment he must have said those words. And it is not only this. There are a thousand and one other such cases. If we were willing, in some way, to put these things into practice, everything would go well. If these things do not become deeds, keep it in mind, we have no likeness to God. We do not resemble God, because here it says: if we do not bless those who curse us, if we do not do good to those who hate us, if we do not pray for those who spitefully treat us — if, if, if, if — we have done nothing; but if we do these things, then you shall become sons of your Father who is in heaven.
Then we will become children; that is, we will resemble the children of the Father in heaven. Then we too will look like children, because the Father is the tender-hearted one, the merciful one, the long-suffering one, the one rich in mercy, who relents over our wickedness. If these things are missing, how can we have God as our Father? The divine John Chrysostom has a beautiful homily on this matter of God's; when I want the next talk I will call it into service, I will make sure to find it. So that you may see — we who say the Our Father, and say it with a flourish at that: many of us ought to walk out of the Church when they say the Our Father, because we have none of God's character, and we cannot call God Father when we are completely the opposite, at least as regards the qualities that would allow us to call God Father.
In any case, I would like to stop here and say to myself and to all of us: let us make some effort, because we have not cultivated ourselves in depth, and the work is not only on the outside — most of it is inside us and upon us, in the small details. And I pray that with the help of our Holy God we may be able to labour in such a way as to form a character fit for the Kingdom of Heaven, which I wish for one another and for our children.

Θέλω να μου κάνεις ελεημοσύνης, ας ελεημοσύνης. Δεν θέλω να μου κάνεις τίποτα. Θέλω εδώ που σε βάζω να συγχωρήσει τον εχθρός. Δεν δέχουμε τίποτα από σένα. Εδώ που σε βάζω θα δώσετε εξετάσεις. Και δεν είναι η μόνη πλευρά. Είναι πολλές πλευρές τέτοιες στις οποίες εμείς πάμε να ξεφύγουμε. Βέβαια μου λέει τον σύζυγο άρρωστο, αχ μου λέει κύριε Παναγόπουλε, έχασα τις επισκέψεις στα νοσοκομεία, έχασα στις φυλακές, τα έχασα όλα αυτά, σοβαρά της λέω εγώ, βέβαια μου λέει τα θερούμε, γιατί έχω μου λέει τον σύζυγο άρρωστο, Περνάω εσύ στο νοσοκομείο ή στο σπίτι σου τώρα και τη φυλακή είσαι εσύ, ιδιαίτερα στη φυλακή. Πρέπει να γίνει καλά ο δικός σου για να πας στους άλλους. Το δικό σου δεν είναι ο δικός σου, δεν είναι άνθρωπος του Θεού;
Πρέπει να τον περιποιηθείς ούτε τον μονοβουλήριστον δικό σου, ότι είναι άρρωστος και δεν πας να δεις τους άλλους, δεν σε ακούνται καλά αυτά οι μυαλάτικοι άνθρωποι. Θέλουμε τον τρόπο των δικότων και καλά να ευχαριστήσουν τον Θεό. Βρε εδώ που σε βάζω, εδώ. Είτε σ' αρέσει είτε δε σ' αρέσει. Αυτό μου αρέσει εμένα. Ή γίνεται τίποτα που δεν το ξέρει ο Θεός; Τι είναι εκείνο που γίνεται, ποιο φύλλο πέφτει από το δέντρο, ποια τρίχα πέφτει από το κεφάλι μας, ποιος σπουργήτη πέφτει κάτω που δεν το ξέρει ο Θεός και δεν παίρνει άδεια για να γίνει; Και εντούτοις, είναι τυχαίο γεγονός ότι είσαι εχθρό; Είναι τυχαίο γεγονός ότι ευρέφεις κοντά σε έναν γείτονα που σου ψήνει το ψάρι στα χίλια από το πρωί μέχρι το βράδυ; Είναι τυχαίο γεγονός;
ξέρω, εάν για τον Α ή Β λόγο παραμένουμε οι ίδιοι, μην περιμένουμε να δούμε Θεού πρόσωπο. Πρέπει να φτάσουμε σε σημείο να είναι ξένο προς εμάς το να μισήσω. Δεν ξέρω πώς μισούν. Δεν ξέρω πώς πιάνονται οι άνθρωποι, πώς φιλονικούν. Κάποτε δύο γέροντες που ζήσανε ογδόντα χρόνια μαζί δεν είχανε μαλώσει ποτέ. Και είπαν, πώς μαλώνουν λέει οι άνθρωποι, γέροντα; Πάντα, ξέρω εγώ λέει, δεν έρχεσαι του λέει να μαλώσουμε και εμείς να δούμε πώς μαλώνουμε; Λέει, πώς θα κάνουμε να μαλώσουμε;
