Summary
The lecture places Christ’s Baptism within the Orthodox feast of Theophany and explains that the Church’s liturgical calendar presents saving events theologically rather than as a continuous chronology. Crowds come to the Jordan River, confess their sins, and receive John’s baptism of repentance, which the lecture distinguishes from the Church’s sacramental Baptism of salvation. Entry into the Kingdom is connected with sacramental life: Christian Baptism replaces circumcision, including through infant baptism, and Holy Communion unites believers to Christ’s Body and Blood.

In our last talk, as you will remember, we spoke about the events surrounding the birth of our Christ, and specifically we went as far as Bethlehem: why they went to Bethlehem and all those details that we drew from Luke. This did not exhaust the subject, of course, because the story of Christmas has other aspects as well. There are the visits of the Magi and the shepherds, among other things. Still, we did say something about Christmas. Now, within this cycle of feasts there is another scene: the Baptism, the feast we call Theophany. The whole festal season continues through Theophany, the Baptism of our Christ, and the Synaxis of the Honorable Forerunner. Then we leave behind the cycle of the Twelve Days and return to the path we had been following before. There is also a great deal of discussion about the Baptism of our Christ: how it happened, why, where, and so on. Since we will not meet again before then, I thought this evening that, having spoken about the Nativity, we should also say a few words about His Baptism. Apart from John, all the other Evangelists
speak about the Baptism of Christ, the feast we call Theophany. This evening I shall take the account from the Evangelist Matthew, whose Gospel is also used in the readings for that day, together with Mark and the others. So I shall draw the events from the Evangelist Matthew. In the story of the Baptism there is not only the one who baptizes; in a certain sense there is also a sponsor, a godfather. That godfather is the Honorable Forerunner, as you know. He baptized our Christ, who humbled Himself like a little child, as a man. Indeed, he was counted worthy to place his right hand upon Christ’s head. That hand remains intact even today, as I have mentioned on another occasion, and it is here in the Orthodox world.
More precisely, it is at the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on the Holy Mountain. This hand becomes warm, and it is even said that when the feast of the Honorable Forerunner is celebrated and the hieromonk wishes to say, “Peace be to all,” he gives the blessing with that hand. This is something very solemn. If any of you gentlemen are ever counted worthy to visit the Holy Mountain, I urge you to stop at the Holy Monastery as well. Dionysiou is easy to reach because it stands by the sea; you do not have to walk there, but can go by boat. There you will also find the relics of Saint Niphon the Patriarch, who renounced his office, became a monk on the Holy Mountain, and attained holiness. His holy relics are kept there. So, as you see, other persons are also involved in this account.
The Evangelists also speak about the Honorable Forerunner. In fact, they begin with him, and then describe what he did and how he became connected with Christ during his earthly life. The other day, when we spoke about the sequence of events, we said that the Church does not follow a strict chronology; She simply sets forth the events. Thus, on the same day we celebrate the adoration of both the Magi and the shepherds, although the shepherds went on the very night of the Nativity, while the Magi came two years later. Nevertheless, the Church celebrates the Magi and the shepherds together. Here is another example. On the sixth of the month, the day after tomorrow, when we celebrate His Baptism, Christ
is only twelve days old according to the festal calendar, yet the Church presents Him as thirty years old and being baptized by John. He has not even reached His fortieth day—that will be on February 2—and yet She presents Him as thirty years old. The purpose is not to show how He grew or where He went each day, as though keeping a diary, but to set forth the saving events: that He also underwent this baptism as a man and left us an example, and so forth. In any case, listen to how the Evangelist Matthew presents it: “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’” You know that John found refuge in the wilderness because of Herod’s persecution, so that he might escape Herod’s sword.
The difference in age between our Christ and John is six months. “Now in the sixth month”—counting from the time Elizabeth, the wife of Zacharias, conceived—Gabriel was sent and announced the good tidings to our Most Holy Theotokos, who then also conceived. And when she went to visit the hill country of Judah, the child “leaped with gladness” in Elizabeth’s womb. John was six months older. He should therefore have been among the children slaughtered by Herod. What ages were killed? Two years old and under. Those two years old and under were slaughtered.
Herod calculated the age according to this measure, “according to the time which he had carefully ascertained from the Magi.” He asked the Magi when they had seen the star. They told him, “We saw it two years ago, and we set out from Arabia to come here and find you.” So he calculated from that point. John, therefore, should also have fallen within that age group. Tradition relates, however, that Elizabeth took the child and fled. Herod’s soldiers rushed after her to seize him. Finding herself before a small mountain, she offered a brief prayer. She said only a few words: “O mountain, receive the child and his mother.” At once she found herself on the other side of the mountain. In this way, the child escaped from the hands of Herod’s soldiers and remained there in the wilderness.
She fed him there with wild honey and the like, evidently having the locusts brought to him, and he remained there until God called him to go out and preach. If you wish to find the account of this call, read Luke. It is mentioned in the third chapter of Luke, which tells us exactly when it occurred by naming the political rulers who were living at the time. In this way, it identifies the time when “the word of the Lord came” to John, commanding him to go out and preach. This is what Matthew means here when he says that the Baptist “came preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,’” because he had received this command. “Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,”
“when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas”—Caiaphas. In other words, it tells us precisely who was the head of the religious establishment, who stood at the summit of the state, who ranked beneath him, who governed, and who held each office. “During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness,” where he had been living. “And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance”—not a Baptism of salvation. Orthodox Christians should know this when they hear what Protestants say. It was a baptism of repentance, that is, something corresponding to confession as we know it today.
“A baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the Prophet, saying: ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; the crooked shall become straight, and the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’” These were the words Isaiah wrote concerning John’s preaching, when John would appear upon the scene. This, then, was the command God gave him. That is precisely why Matthew says here that John came: “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’”
“For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the Prophet, saying.” The words that follow are the same ones we mentioned earlier, spoken by the Prophet Isaiah: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.” This shows us that John did not set out on his own authority or by his own initiative. His mission was from God. He was sent to fulfill it, and here we clearly see that he is one who has been sent. What is striking is the content of his preaching, because it does not differ from the content of Christ’s preaching. Our Christ, too, as we read in the first chapter of Mark, spoke the same words when He began His ministry: “Repent,”
“for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and believe in the Gospel.” He added only a few more words: “And believe in the Gospel.” In other words, Christ proclaimed the same essential message that John proclaimed. He does not speak about good works, although today we make so much of them and imagine that if we perform good works, we shall be saved. The Kingdom of Heaven is a matter of metanoia, of repentance, not of good works. “For it is at hand.” Therefore, repent. He does not say, “Perform good works.” A person who truly lives in repentance cannot do evil works; good works will follow naturally. But those good works are not what saves him. Repentance saves him, and good works are its fruit. Now, I do not know whether you have understood why repentance is required.
Christ came into the world to restore humanity to Paradise. Humanity is outside Paradise, having been cast out in the persons of Adam and Eve. And we, their descendants, are also outside Paradise. Why were Adam and Eve driven out of Paradise? Was it only because of their sin? It was also because they refused to repent. Did God not call them to repentance? Did He not say, “Adam, Adam, where are you?” Yet they did not repent. They had seen the consequences of their failure; they knew that they had failed. They did not become gods. Instead, they trembled like reeds and went into hiding. They saw that they were naked and defiled.
They were ashamed, yet they still did not repent. They shifted the blame. Eve blamed the serpent, Adam blamed Eve, and both of them blamed God. There was no repentance at all. So God would no longer listen to them; He cast them out and closed Paradise to them. Now, as descendants of Adam, by what path must we return to Paradise? Since they departed through their refusal to repent, how shall we return? Through repentance. This is why repentance is required. Where your forefathers refused to repent, you must repent, if you desire, and return. Even today, every matter between man and God is resolved not through man’s own righteousness, but through God’s mercy and man’s repentance. Whatever we do,
we will also commit some sin. Sin is erased by nothing except repentance. The command “Repent” still applies today. “Who is the man who shall live and not sin?” It is impossible for anyone living in this world not to sin, whether in word, deed, or thought. He will sin; he will become stained. Job says that even if a person’s life in this world lasts “but one day,” he is sinful. How could it be otherwise? And so the same thing applies today: repentance. This proclamation is eternal. No sin remains except the sin that is unrepented and unconfessed. Even in the end, people admit, “I should not have done that.” Yes, it was a sin, but they do not confess it, and so it remains. Confession is essential if repentance is to have power. This is precisely what the parable of the prodigal son teaches. His repentance
was made known; he gave expression to it. “Yes, I have done wrong. I will go back.” He returned and asked forgiveness, and then he was restored. We have been taught this parable from our earliest school days. “Repent,” then, he says, “for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” The subject is the Kingdom—the Kingdom. And to inherit a kingdom, you must become a royal child; it is not for common men. As we hear in the Gospel of the Judgment: “Come, inherit the Kingdom.” For a person to become a royal child, his blood must be changed. He must receive a transfusion, as it were, and receive royal blood. This royal blood is given only through Holy Communion. When a person receives Holy Communion, he receives royal blood; he receives the Body and Blood of Christ our God.
Thus, by grace, he is transformed and made fit for the Kingdom. Those who heard Him then understood very well that Christ was proclaiming a Kingdom—not vineyards or fields, but the Kingdom of Heaven. To gain the Kingdom of Heaven, a person is not called merely to perform the good works we speak about. He must first repent, accept Christ as Savior, and receive Christ as He offers Himself. Christ said, “He who eats My flesh”—not he who ate it once, many years ago, and so forth, but he who eats regularly. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” We become one with Him. “And I will raise him up on the last day.” I Myself will raise that person then. Will I not raise him for his good? I will indeed. I will not raise him merely to judge him and send him to Hell, but for his salvation, because My own blood will be found within him.
By grace, he has become a royal child, My brother, and therefore a child of My Father. This, then, was the command in a few words: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” You have no time to spare. “For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the Prophet.” The man speaking these words is the one foretold by Isaiah more than eight hundred years before Christ. I think you know that John, too, had been foretold. Just as we knew about Christ before He came—where He would come, how He would come, and when He would come—and just as we knew about the Most Holy Theotokos, that she would come and what role she would fulfill, and about the Honorable Cross, that it would appear, and so forth, so we also knew about the Honorable Forerunner. There are two prophecies. Our Christ Himself mentions this in the eleventh chapter of Matthew,
saying, “For this is he of whom it is written.” John, He says, is the one about whom it was written. What was written? “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.” There is, then, a prophecy about his ministry. He is called an angel here, not because he is an angel by nature, but because of the message he brings: “He who comes after me has become greater than I.” Because of the role he would fulfill, he is presented as a messenger. This is why Byzantine icons depict him with wings. It does not mean that he is a spirit. As you know, he is the child of Zacharias and Elizabeth, but he is depicted in this way because of the ministry he was to fulfill. The Prophet had spoken of him
many years before Christ: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face.” That is the first prophecy. The other is written by Isaiah in the fortieth chapter, verse three: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord.” A thunderous voice comes from the wilderness, like the bellowing of an ox, awakening the whole world and making people shudder. His voice, too, would be fearsome in this way, because he was preaching repentance to sinful men. “Prepare the way of the Lord.” Make yourselves ready, because if you do not prepare the way, He will not come. Even today, we receive in proportion to how much we prepare ourselves. If you remember, we say this to Him both in the evening and
in the evening and in the morning, at the Doxology: “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we have hoped in You.” We receive according to how much we have prepared. That is why a person always needs some preparation, both for prayer and for Holy Communion. The more reverence and fear of God a person has when approaching God—whether to pray to Him or to receive Him within—the better it is for him. “Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.” Paths means the road. And here, I do not know whether you noticed what I read. It says, “Make His paths straight,” and stops there. But
further on it says: “Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low.” What does this mean? It means that our road to Christ is full of hollows and high places. These are our falls into sin and our pride. You must fill in those ravines, it says, and tear down those heights, so that the road may be made level and you may meet Christ. Christ is neither a fall into sin nor pride. He is the straight way. You must set your passions in order and become truly human, because we have not yet become truly human. Here, however, this Evangelist does not continue far enough to complete Isaiah’s thought. That is precisely why he stops there, although we see that the command continues: “Every valley
shall be filled”—the ditches within human souls must be filled—“and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall become straight.” Every obstacle ahead must be leveled. For when a person comes to metanoia, to repentance, he looks deeply within to see his own filth, and he also looks at his pride and the heights to which he imagines himself raised. All these things must be leveled: the hollows filled and the heights torn down. Then the road to Christ will become beautiful, sound, and straight. “Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey,” because he lived in the wilderness, as I told you, and I also told you why he lived there.
He found himself there because he had fled from Herod’s sword, which pursued him. It says that he had a leather belt and wore, not a sheepskin—a sheep’s hide or fleece in which to wrap himself—but camel’s hair. Theophylact of Bulgaria also interprets why the garment he wore was made from camel’s hair. I do not know whether you are aware that in the Old Testament there are clean and unclean animals. The clean animals are those that chew the cud and have divided hooves, like the goat and the sheep.
The sheep chews the cud—it chews its food again, as we say—and its hoof is also divided. Any animal that does not chew the cud or does not have a divided hoof is not clean. There is also a class of animals that are half clean and half unclean. The camel belongs to this class. The camel chews the cud, but its foot does not have a cloven hoof. Therefore, it is half clean and half unclean. So the Saint wears a camel’s hide and is wrapped in camel’s hair, showing by this as well: “I stand on the boundary between the Old Testament and the New Testament, between the Law and grace, between darkness and light.”
This Holy Father says that even by what John wears, he proclaims that he stands between the two Testaments, between two worlds, between the Old Testament and the New Testament. For, as you know, he is the last prophet who spoke about Christ and also saw Him. None of the others saw Christ with their bodily eyes. Isaiah prophesied, David prophesied, Jeremiah and Daniel prophesied—so many prophesied—but they did not see Him with bodily eyes. John both prophesied about Him and saw Him; he even pointed Him out. Before Christ came, John said, “He who comes after me has come to be before me,” and so on. But afterward he was also granted the grace to say: “Behold, the Son of God, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” He stands precisely at the boundary between these two states. The leather belt around his waist also shows that a person must be
always ready. A person wears a belt when he has to walk, so that it will help him by keeping his clothes from moving about and allow him to walk more easily. The leather belt is dry. It comes from an animal, but it is no longer fresh; it has been dried. To walk, to gird yourself, and to journey rightly, you must dry out the flesh. When you are well fed, eating and feasting freely, you cannot walk upright toward the Kingdom of Heaven. You must deprive the flesh and make it dry, like the leather belt of John the Forerunner. Then you will walk rightly and remain watchful.
You must put blinders on yourself, as they put blinders on horses, so that you do not look here and there. We are going this way, for there is only one road. When Peter took his eyes off Christ and looked around him at the waves, he began to sink. As long as he kept his eyes fixed on God, he walked upon the sea. In other words, Peter did what Christ did as God: the elements of nature supported him, and the water held him upon its surface. But this continued only while his eyes were looking straight ahead at Christ. When he turned his eyes away from Christ, he began to sink. A person must therefore strive not to look here and there, not to concern himself with what the world says or what the world is doing, but with what is spiritually profitable, which road he must follow, and how he must follow it so that one day he may reach his destination. And John’s food, it says, was locusts and wild honey.
The wilderness produced these things, and he ate from them. In any case, as we know, John gained a great reputation among the people there. It is like us: if we hear that there is a hermit or ascetic somewhere, we run to him with our various needs. A person—especially someone living in the world—always needs a spiritual father. He faces difficult situations, questions, fears, adversities, and temptations, and he wants guidance. So the people learned about John and began going to hear him. And it says here: “Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.” The farther his reputation spread, the more
the people were moved, and they set out to go and hear him. “And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.” There you see confession: “confessing their sins.” What was happening? Who was without sins? All of us have sins, and all of them had sins. He brought them into the Jordan and kept them there in the water, and while they stood in the water, they confessed their sins. As soon as they finished their confession, he released them, and they came up out of the water. The water is a type of the Holy Spirit. Thus, in the manner of the Holy Spirit, the water took away the sins of those people and made them receptive to sanctification
and salvation. It was not the Baptism of salvation; it was a baptism of repentance. The Baptism of salvation is one thing, and the baptism of repentance is another. Many are scandalized by the claim that we must be baptized as adults because Christ was baptized at the age of thirty. But Christ did not receive the Baptism of salvation; He received a baptism of repentance. That baptism of repentance corresponds to our metanoia, repentance, and confession today. One is not the same as the other. You see, Christ received circumcision when He was eight days old. Our infant Baptism is connected with that circumcision. Our Baptism—infant Baptism—replaces circumcision, while the baptism of John
is replaced by metanoia, repentance, and confession. Moreover, when a child is baptized today, he is baptized for the remission of sins and eternal life. The other matter is clear: metanoia and confession. Paul writes about this in the second chapter of his Epistle to the Colossians, saying that circumcision was replaced by Baptism. At that time, anyone who was not circumcised could not eat the Passover—that is, could not receive Holy Communion, as we would say today. For this reason, circumcision was performed promptly. The commandment of circumcision was first given by God to Abraham, and we read about it in the fourteenth chapter of Genesis. Anyone who was uncircumcised had no relationship with God, was not a friend of God, and could not eat the Passover.
That is, he could not eat the lamb. He had to be circumcised. And circumcision was performed on the eighth day. Our infant Baptism replaced this eighth-day circumcision. It is different for someone who is already grown and hears the preaching. He may choose to repent, or he may choose not to repent. And you know, very soon we shall be faced with this necessity, and I want you to understand it. With civil marriages, which the government is going to introduce, we shall now have unbaptized children as well. Someone who does not come to the Church, but goes to the mayor to be married, will not come to the Church to have his children baptized either. Nor will the Church simply baptize those children. It will first have to catechize him in some other way, as a convert. Nor can someone who has not received the crowning in Holy Matrimony
be accepted by the Church as a sponsor. Will the Church accept such a person as a godparent to have another person baptized? You are not a member of the Church. How, then, and for what reason will you confess the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, so that we may baptize this child and cleanse it from ancestral sin? Many problems will now arise. We even hear it said by people in official positions, who have not considered the matter carefully, that a person should grow up and then ask on his own to be baptized. Why force him? Does God act coercively, they say? Has the Orthodox Church been wrong for two thousand years in baptizing infants? And what harm is done? What harm do you do to a child when you baptize it?
Should you ask the child? Did they ask children in former times before circumcising them? Did they ask whether they wanted it or not? Did they ask Christ, when they took Him to be circumcised, whether He wanted it or not? Did He have an opinion at that age? Did any of the others? It was God’s commandment. Besides, if you do not like the Baptism your father and mother gave you, cast it away. After they gave you five hundred baths, they gave you one more—the five hundred and first. If Baptism is merely a bath to you, cast it away. Do you know what infant Baptism is, my beloved? It is a treasure placed in the child’s hands. When he grows up, he may say, “I do not want the treasure.” Then cast it away, my child.
But if you want it, keep it, for it will lead you to God. It is a treasure, because death exists and illness exists; and if death finds you at four in the morning, the baptized child will be saved, while the unbaptized child will go to Hell. So the Church places this treasure of eternity into your hands. When you grow up, sit down and consider how you will use this treasure. Do you want to cast it away? Cast it away. Do you want to keep it? It will benefit you. But let us go further. Suppose tomorrow I go out to preach and before me are two people, one baptized and one unbaptized, both indifferent to the faith. Which one will be easier for me to move, and
which one will be easier to bring onto the right path? I think it will be the baptized person, since what he needs is confession. The burning coal of Baptism remains within him, though ashes cover it. He has seen nothing from his father or mother, nothing from society, and nothing from the Church, you might say; yet now he hears. I come to him, knowing that he is baptized and that a covered coal remains within. I speak to him so that we may rekindle it, remove the sins through metanoia, repentance, and confession, and breathe upon the coal of the Holy Spirit already within him so that it may glow again. The other person, however, must first be brought to the baptismal font, and it is difficult for an adult to enter the font. Do you understand?
Through Baptism I place a Cross in his hand, so that if he dies suddenly, he will not be lost. Without his paying anything, Christ grants him this blessing in the Church. At the same time, if he grows up and passes through a crisis—for human beings go through such a condition in their youth almost like an illness—it is difficult for them to remain steadfast, and they may fall. Yet they still have the possibility of being saved, because they are baptized. Unfortunately, before long we shall have to face these things because of these new fashions. In any case, let us return to our subject. All those people went and confessed their sins, it says. Here it also mentions several incidents involving certain deceitful people who went there. Among the crowds were some Pharisees and Sadducees. The Pharisees were those who thought they were saints.
The Sadducees were those who did not believe that there is life beyond the grave or a Resurrection. “But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism,” John said to them, “Brood of vipers!” Look at that description. You know, the viper’s young come out through its belly. They tear through its belly, and afterward the viper dies. In other words, he tells them: “You devour your mother’s womb in order to come forth.” You understand how accursed he considers them. “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” Who told you that by coming here and merely performing an outward rite, you would escape the wrath of God?
“Therefore bear fruit worthy of metanoia, of repentance.” It is not enough merely to repent; you must also set right the sins you have committed. “Bear fruit worthy of repentance, and do not think to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’” At that time they said, “We are descendants of Abraham.” It is like saying today, “We are Orthodox Christians,” while lacking the corresponding works. “For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.” He says that God can make the stones into children of Abraham and make the so-called children of Abraham into stones. This concerns the Gentiles who would come later. It is a prophecy that was afterward fulfilled. You know, the Jews became stones and remained stones.
The Gentiles, who had been like stones, became Christians. “Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees.” The axe is what cuts down trees—what we call a hatchet. “Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” Iconographers have taken this image and placed it at John’s feet in the icons: an axe embedded in the trunk of a tree. Judgment is there. This is the justice of God. The justice of God is not acting today, nor did it act then. Even to this day, the justice of God has not yet acted.
The other day in Church you heard the Apostle reading from Hebrews, where Paul described how the people of the Old Testament struggled, what they suffered, and all they endured. Yet he says, “They did not receive the promise.” Those people, he says, have not yet received their reward, because the justice of God has not yet come. “God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.” God has appointed another day. He says, in effect: “You of the Old Testament must wait. Those of the New Testament will also come, having suffered persecution and the rest, and then they will receive the prize.” Some will be punished by the justice of God, while others will be rewarded by God according to His justice. So the justice of God is not acting today. Let those of us who are scandalized and demand that God intervene take care to remember this.
Should God intervene only in the faults of others? Then He must intervene in our own faults as well. And who could then withstand God? Unfortunately, we see only the faults of others and demand justice—that they be punished—without seeing our own. David, who had understood this through the Holy Spirit, said: “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” Who could stand before You if You took pencil and paper and settled accounts with us? Who could? Of course, today this man harms me, that man openly wrongs me, causes me loss, insults me, and mocks me. But is there nothing in my own past? And who will pay for what I have done? Will my own wrongs simply be forgiven? Judgment is there, at the root of the tree.
The axe is there to cut, but someone must take it in hand; it does not cut by itself. The same is true of the justice of God. The axe lies at His feet. Today, as we might say, it is at rest. It simply lies there. But the time will come when He will take it up and clear the threshing floor. John thought He would clear the threshing floor then, but He did not. He did not clear it. Instead, the Master of the threshing floor Himself was struck down. They killed the Lord, and the Lord did not clear the threshing floor. That still lies ahead. On the first day of the Indiction, the beginning of the ecclesiastical year—for we have two New Year’s Days, one civil and one ecclesiastical—the civil New Year is January 1, while the Church’s ecclesiastical New Year is September 1. Take your service book or Horologion, and you will see that it begins on September 1.
It does not begin on January 1. On that day a Gospel reading from the fourth chapter of Luke is read. It contains themes from the Old Testament concerning Christ’s coming into the world and the role Christ would fulfill in the world. It says that He was sent “to preach the Gospel to the poor,” to give sight to the blind, to make the lame walk, and “to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” Then He closed the book, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. This means that a period of time has been appointed during which all who repent will be accepted. Immediately after that, however—there is a full stop there—the text says, “and the day of vengeance of our God.”
Christ did not say those words. He stopped after saying, “the acceptable year of the Lord.” When He came to the words “the day of vengeance,” the Lord stopped and sat down. “I did not come for vengeance. I did not come to punish. I did not come to judge. I came to help people repent.” If they make use of this time of kindness and long-suffering, they will be saved. Judgment is another matter. In a similar way, John tells them: “The axe is laid to the root of the trees.” Take heed: the justice of God will overtake you; you cannot escape it. He continues by saying that every tree which bears evil fruit, O scribes and Pharisees, will be cut down and cast into the furnace. In any case, he also tells them: “I baptize you with water unto repentance”—not unto salvation, but unto repentance.
We never open the Scriptures and read them, and so we lose our way and listen to what the Protestants and others tell us. “I baptize you with water unto repentance. But He who is coming after me is mightier than I”—the One who would come six months after him—“whose sandals I am not worthy to carry”: not even to remove His shoes and take them when He enters the house. I am not worthy even of such a task. “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Today, when we are baptized, what Baptism do we receive? Both: with water and with the Holy Spirit. We do not stop at being immersed in the water; we also receive the “seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit,” and so forth. “His winnowing fan is in His hand.” The shovel, he says...
“...is in His hand.” He has the winnowing fan; I do not. “And He will thoroughly cleanse His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.” He is the One who will carry out the judgment. He will set all things in order according to the way each person has lived. So much, then, concerning John. “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.” Since Christ had become fully man, and since it was necessary to fulfill all righteousness in every respect, He too set out to be baptized by John. At the same time, He would show the people...
...that He was not opposed to the God who had sent John. The people believed in John and accepted him, and this would make Christ’s own appearance among them easier. But when John saw Him take His place in the line to be baptized, “he tried to prevent Him, saying...” He would not consent to baptize Him, to place his hand upon His head and immerse Him in the Jordan. He would not accept such a thing. “He tried to prevent Him”—that is, he hindered Him—saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” What is this? Where are You going? You must baptize me, not I You. “But Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Permit it now.’” Put these things aside for the moment. “For thus it is fitting.” Am I not man? According to My humanity, am I not the Son of Mary?
I received circumcision; did not My mother go to the Temple after forty days? I am fully man. Yes, I am God, but I am also fully man. Therefore, as man, I too must be obedient. “For thus it is fitting for us to fulfill”—that is, to carry out—“all righteousness.” All righteousness! Do we fulfill all righteousness? We possess only partial righteousness, if even that can be called righteousness. In any case, when He spoke to John plainly and graciously, “he permitted Him.” John consented, and Christ came in His turn to be baptized by him. “And when Jesus had been baptized, He came up immediately from the water.”
What does “He came up immediately from the water” mean? Did He leave the water so that He would not become cold? No. The others remained in the water because they had sins to confess. Christ had no sins to confess. He received the baptism in obedience, but there was no reason for Him to remain there, and so He came up immediately from the water, because Christ had no sins. At that moment, “behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him,” and the Spirit came and rested upon Him. We also call this day Theophany, do we not? Why? Because God was revealed to be...
...three in hypostases, three divine Persons. As we say beautifully, “The Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of the word.” The Father speaks from above: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Holy Spirit descends, and Christ is baptized. The existence of God is revealed: God is Trinitarian. “The Holy Spirit descended,” it says, “like a dove.” The dove is a type of the Holy Spirit, evidently used because of its purity and innocence. What does Scripture say elsewhere? “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” The serpent, in its wisdom, protects its head, because if its head is struck, it is killed. When danger approaches, it seeks to hide its head among the stones. This teaches us not to expose our lives needlessly. “And innocent as doves.” The dove’s innocence is seen in its chastity. A dove never commits fornication or adultery. It remains faithful to its mate. If the male is killed, the female does not take another mate, but remains alone and has no relations with another.
The birds and the animals teach us.
We have torn down every boundary and accept no restraint. Christ also showed His regard for the dove when He went to the Temple, as recorded in the second chapter of John, and found a great crowd there conducting business outside: the money changers, those handling money, and the rest. He threw everything into confusion, overturned their tables, and made a whip. He said, “You have made My Father’s house a house of merchandise.” And He also spoke to those who sold doves. There were people there who kept doves and sold them to those who came for the forty-day presentation, just as the Most Holy Theotokos came with a pair of turtledoves or pigeons after forty days. These things were needed there at the Temple.
When He came to those who had the cages of birds, He said, “Take these things away and go from here.” He did not want them to release the birds from their cages. He showed reverence for the image of the Holy Spirit represented by the doves. Christ respected even the animal, the bird, because it is a type of the Holy Spirit, and yet you say to me, “Am I to venerate the person of the Most Holy Theotokos when I see her depicted on a piece of wood?” I do not venerate the wood; I venerate the person! Again, at the time of the Flood, the Holy Spirit was symbolized by the dove which Noah the Patriarch sent out. It went forth, found no clean place on which to rest its feet, and returned.
This is an image we should keep in mind when we go to Church the day after tomorrow and kneel: the Holy Spirit will come to us as well and bring us the blessing of water. We shall receive the Great Agiasmos and take some home with us. Yet grace will rest upon us only if we are truly clean. Then, like a dove, the grace of the Holy Spirit will be able to rest upon us and sanctify us too. But if we are not clean, because we are careless and our lives are not worthy, then we shall not receive grace. Grace will withdraw again. Thus John saw the Spirit “descending like a dove”—not as an actual dove, but like a dove. Scripture speaks in human terms. It is the same with “a tongue as of fire”: neither literally a tongue nor literally fire, but like a tongue and like a dove. It says “like a dove” because no one knows what the Holy Spirit is in His essence—no one—and He came upon Christ.
“And behold, a voice from heaven said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’” O wretched Jehovah’s Witness, God says that He is His beloved Son. How can you say that He is a creature? How can you say that He is an angel? How can you say that He is a servant? God says—Jehovah Himself says—“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” the One whom I was pleased to send to fulfill this role. How can you make Him into something else? These are the events surrounding Theophany, which, God willing, we shall celebrate again this year. Let us keep these things in mind.
Another subject that is brought forward and debated is the blessing of water that we receive. Some say the Agiasmos keeps, others say it does not. Some drink it, others do not. Some even receive the Agiasmos on the day of Theophany but do not receive Christ’s Body, treating the Agiasmos as though it were Holy Communion—and there are a thousand such falsehoods and deceptions. On Theophany, first we receive Holy Communion, second we receive the antidoron, and third we receive the Agiasmos. Holy Communion is Christ; the antidoron represents the Theotokos; and the Agiasmos is the Jordan. That is the proper order. And we do receive Holy Communion; it is not true that we do not. Otherwise, what Christ said would apply.
“Blind Pharisee, which is greater, the gift or the One who sanctifies the gift?” The One who sanctifies the gift is greater. And He who sanctifies is Christ. How, then, can you tell me that I should receive the water but not receive Christ? The Agiasmos also keeps. It is given for us. John Chrysostom says at Theophany: “Priest, empty all the vessels,” so that, he says, “you may have blessed water throughout the year.” We have hung it high up and are afraid even to move it. Some carry it through the Church with processional fans, as though that were required. If I pour it outside the evening before and sinful feet tread upon it, I supposedly have the right to do so; but if I preserve it in my bottle, I supposedly have no right. Then what became of the lakes into which the Cross was cast and which became blessed water? What became of the sea? What became of the rivers?
Man alone is considered unworthy. Everything else—the dogs, the cats, and the birds—may drink the blessed water; only man may not drink it. Look how far we have fallen! In any case, this is what I wished to say to you. I pray that you may celebrate Christmas rightly, the New Year rightly, and a sanctified Theophany.

δέχεται στην Εκκλησία, θα τον δέχεται η Εκκλησία να κάνει ανάδοχο, τον ανάδοχο, και να βαφτίσει άλλον; Εσύ δεν είσαι μέλος της Εκκλησίας. Πώς, για ποιον λόγο θα ομολογήσεις τώρα Πατέρα, Υιόν και Άγιο Πνεύμα, για να βαφτίσουμε αυτό το παιδί και να το καθαρίσουμε από το προπατορικό αμάρτημα; Θα δημιουργηθούν πολλά πράγματα τώρα. Και ακούγονται μάλιστα και από επίσημα χείλη, που δεν έχουν προσέξει το θέμα, ότι θα πρέπει να μεγαλώσει ο άνθρωπος και μόνος του να ζητήσει να βαπτιστεί. Γιατί τον εκβιάζει, βιάζεται λέει ο Θεός; Ότι η Εκκλησία, η Ορθόδοξη, έχει κάνει λάθος δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια τώρα που βαπτίζει; Και τι ζημιά γίνεται; Τι ζημιά του κάνεις του παιδιού όταν το βαπτίζεις;
ποιον είναι ευκολότερο να φέρω στον δρόμο; Νομίζω τον βαπτισμένο, αφού του χρειάζεται μία εξομολόγηση. Υπάρχει ο άνθραξ μέσα του βαπτίσματος μέσα και επάνω υπάρχει στάχτη. Δεν είδε τίποτα από τον πατέρα του, από τη μάνα του, δεν είδε τίποτα από την κοινωνία, δεν είδε τίποτα από την Εκκλησία, θέλετε να πω, ακούει. Όμως έρχομαι τώρα εγώ, που ξέρω ότι είναι βαπτισμένος και μέσα υπάρχει άνθραξ καλυμμένος, να του μιλήσω και να κάνουμε μια αναζωπύρωση, να παραμερίσουμε τις αμαρτίες με μια μετάνοια και εξομολόγηση, να φυσήσουμε το υπάρχον μέσα του κάρβουνο του Πνεύματος του Αγίου και να πειράξω. Ενώ τον άλλον πρέπει να τον βάλω στην κολυμβήθρα και δύσκολο είναι να μπει στην κολυμβήθρα ο μεγάλος. Καταλάβατε;
ότι δεν είναι αντίθετος του Θεού που έχει στείλει τον Ιωάννη, γιατί τον Ιωάννη τον πίστευαν, τον παραδέχονταν αυτοί, και έτσι θα διευκόλυνε την παρουσία του. Ο δε Ιωάννης, όταν τον είδε ότι ήρθε κι αυτός στη σειρά για να βαπτιστεί, «διεκώλυεν αυτόν λέγων». Δεν τον εδέχετο να βαπτιστεί, να του βάλει το χέρι στο κεφάλι του, να τον βάλει μέσα στον Ιορδάνη. Δεν του εδέχετο αυτό το πράγμα. «Διεκώλυεν», αυτόν τον εμπόδιζε δηλαδή, «λέγων· εγώ χρείαν έχω υπό σου βαπτισθήναι, και συ έρχη προς με;» Τι είναι αυτά; Πού πας; Εσύ πρέπει να βαφτίσεις εμένα και όχι εγώ να βαφτίσω εσένα. «Αποκριθείς δε ο Ιησούς είπε προς αυτόν· άφες άρτι». Άφησ' αυτά στην άκρη τώρα. «Ούτω γαρ πρέπον εστίν». Δεν είμαι άνθρωπος; Δεν είμαι, κατά το ανθρώπινο, Υιός της Μαρίας;
«Φαρισαῖε τυφλέ, ποιο είναι ανώτερον, το δώρο ή ο αγιάζων το δώρο;» Ο αγιάζων το δώρο. Πόσο, λοιπόν, αυτός που αγιάζει είναι ο Χριστός. Πώς εσύ μου λες τώρα ότι εγώ θα πάρω το νερό και δεν θα πάρω τον Χριστό; Και ο αγιασμός διατηρείται. Για μας είναι. Και ο Χρυσόστομος λέει στα Φώτα: «Πρεσβύτερος, αδειάστε τα όλα», λέει, «και αγιασμένο νερό να έχετε όλο τον χρόνο». Εμείς τον κρεμάσαμε ψηλά και φοβούμεθα να τον μεταφέρουμε. Και ορισμένοι τον μεταφέρουν με εξαπτέρυγα στην εκκλησία, που τους έμεινε. Αν τον χύσω αποβραδίς έξω, να τον πατάνε τα πόδια τα αμαρτωλά, έχω δικαίωμα. Αν τον φυλάξω στο μπουκάλι μου, δεν έχω δικαίωμα. Τότε τι έγιναν οι λίμνες που ρίξαν τον σταυρό μέσα και έγιναν αγιασμός; Τι έγινε η θάλασσα; Τι έγιναν τα ποτάμια;
