Summary

The angel’s message to Joseph reveals that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, is both God and man, and came to save His people from their sins. Christ was revealed to both the simple shepherds and the learned Magi, showing that He is known through divine revelation received by a humble and purified heart. After appearing in the Temple at age twelve, Christ lived hidden in Nazareth until His baptism by John the Baptist and the beginning of His public ministry.

From my notes, I see that in our last talk we spoke about the events of Christmas. As we meet here again today, we are now considering the period between the birth of the Lord and the beginning of His public ministry. During this period, which we have not yet examined, there are events connected with the birth of Christ and leading up to His entrance into public life.

It extends from the time He was one day old until He was thirty, when He entered His public ministry. So, in this first meeting, I would like to select certain events that will give us a basic picture of this period, from the birth of Christ to the beginning of His public ministry.

This does not mean that there is some second-rate part of Holy Scripture. Everything belongs to the first rank and the first category; but from among these first things, I am selecting the foremost of the foremost.

I begin, for example, with the first chapter of Matthew, which tells us about the events of the Nativity. We should pause and learn from something the angel said to Joseph. When Joseph considered putting Mary away secretly, because he could not account for her pregnancy, the angel said to him, “That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” This is not what you suppose it to be. And then he says, “She will bear a son.”

A daughter? No, she will bear a son. “And you shall call His name Jesus”—and where does this take us?—“for He will save His people from their sins.” You may ask, what is contained in this verse, in these words? I see that Christ, Jesus, had a people before He was born. That is what I see. He had not yet been born, and yet He already had a people, and He would save His people from their sins. What does this mean? It means that Christ was not only the son of Mary; He was also the Son of God. He was not only man; He was also God. This is fundamental. You know, the divinity of Jesus is a dogma. If, for one reason or another, a person sets up his own reasoning and rejects the divinity of Jesus, which is received through faith, he is lost from the outset, because he stumbles over our dogma. We see this in John, when he said, “He who comes after me has come before me.” What does that mean? The One who, according to His humanity, would come

months after me—for Christ is six months younger than John. “Now in the sixth month Gabriel was sent,” and so forth. From what point is the count made? From the conception of the Honorable Forerunner. That is where the count begins. When Elizabeth is six months pregnant with John, Gabriel goes to the Most Holy Theotokos and announces the Annunciation. This is why Christ appears to be six months younger. Although according to His humanity He is six months younger, He is nevertheless greater, because the One who comes after John is not only the son of Mary, but also the Son of God. So I ask myself, and you should ask yourselves: What is our relationship to our sin

and to our salvation in relation to Jesus? What did Christmas mean for us this year? Did He take away our sins? Because for Him to save a person from his sins, that person must give Him those sins. Christ does not take them unless you willingly give them to Him. Otherwise, you will take your little cart loaded with your own coals and carry them yourself. He does not intervene. Do you remember the beautiful image found in the story of Jonah? What did Jonah say when that great storm arose and, despite their throwing cargo overboard and all the rest, “the sea grew more and more tempestuous,” and they were perishing? He said, “Throw me into the sea, and be certain that the storm will cease.” But why should they have to throw you in? Why do you not jump in yourself? In the spiritual mystery

sin does not fall into the sea of God’s mercy unless you give it up—unless you hand over your sin. As long as they tried to find some other way to save themselves without throwing Jonah into the sea, the sea “grew more and more tempestuous.” But when they seized him and threw him into the sea, the sea became calm. That is what sin is like. For a person’s sin to be cleansed, for Christ to take that sin away, for Christ to save the person from sin, the person must give it to Him. And many of us have not given Him our sins. We have given Him some, but we have kept the rest, as though they were foreign currency whose value might rise. Yes, that is a fundamental mistake. Christmas may have passed, and a person may have done all sorts of things, received and offered countless good wishes, and benefited materially in every possible way;

but if he did not do this—if he did not give his sins to Christ—then he did not truly celebrate Christmas. Christ was not born for him. Jesus was not born for him, because Jesus is called the Savior, and He saves. When a person willingly and deliberately refuses to give up his sins, whether great or small, few or many, he remains outside the whole matter—outside the action, as people in the marketplace might say. He remains outside the one serious reality to which he should have paid the greatest attention, so that he might be benefited by the whole divine economy of the Incarnation. This is the meaning of the words, “For He will save His people from their sins.” This is also in the first chapter.

In verse 25—for what I had been reading to you until now was Matthew 1:21—the Evangelist mentions something that has become a problem for many people, and some have offered solutions of their own. The angel continued by saying that Isaiah’s prophecy would be fulfilled: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,” which is interpreted as “God with us,” and so forth. And indeed, he says, this is how it happened. Then, in conclusion, the Evangelist writes in verse 25: “And he did not know her until she had borne her firstborn Son.” You know what an uproar surrounds this matter, not only among the heterodox, who attack the Ever-Virginity of the Theotokos, but even among those who call themselves Christians among us. And you know, we have no right to say, “Perhaps it may be this way.” A person must hold the correct belief and, following the Church, believe absolutely that the Theotokos had no marital relations with Joseph. The words that cause scandal here are “until” and “firstborn.” For some people say, “Do you not see that it says

‘until she had borne her Son’? He had no relations with her before that; therefore he did afterward.” Does the text say that he did? It does not. Is that what “until” means? It is not. I want you to understand that “until,” or “until such time as,” does not mark a point after which things necessarily change. It can refer to something continuing indefinitely. I shall give you one example that you will remember, because examples from the Old Testament may be less familiar to you. When the man who had been blind was healed, the Jews put him in such a position that he almost cursed the hour in which he had been healed. Among other things,

they said that his parents should be brought, and the passage says, “They did not believe until the parents were called.” Did they believe afterward? No, they did not. Do you see? There are other fine, similar examples. When Noah sent the raven out from the ark, Scripture says that the raven did not return “until the waters had dried up.” So, while there was water, the raven did not return. But once the waters dried up, did the raven then go back into the ark and sit there?

Elsewhere it says, “Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no child until the day of her death.” She bore no child up to the time she died; does that mean she bore a child afterward, after her death? Yet there are people who do not wish to follow the mind of the Church and seize upon this word, just as they seize upon the word “firstborn.” They say, “But the text calls Him firstborn.” Can you show me those who were born second or later? Can you show them to me? “But,” they say, “Scripture speaks of the brothers of the Lord, and it also speaks of sisters.” Were they brothers and sisters of the Lord in the strict sense? How do you arrive at that? “Brother” can mean a relative. What do you call—rather, what was Abraham’s relationship to Lot? Do you know?

They were uncle and nephew. Do you know what Abraham said when their shepherds quarreled over the flocks and the land? “It is not right,” he said, “for us brothers to quarrel.” They were uncle and nephew, yet Holy Scripture calls them brothers. What do you say to that? What was Jethro to Moses? His father-in-law, yet Scripture uses another term of kinship for him. What do you say to that? We must not rush; we need great care. It is one thing to consider what is actually written, and another to repeat what is said by people who, for their own reasons, hate the Theotokos because she bore the One who crushed the serpent’s head. These are entirely different things. We Orthodox must be restrained. Say, “I do not know.” Blessed is your mouth when you say that. Do not make ridiculous or foolish claims about things you do not understand.

Do not try to work everything out by your own reasoning, claiming that because the text says “firstborn,” there must also be a secondborn. I have one child. What is that child? Tell me. Is he firstborn or not? Show me the secondborn. There is none. Christ, then, is firstborn of His mother and firstborn of the Father. Really? Firstborn of the Father? Then show me the Father’s secondborn. Have you never opened the Epistle to the Hebrews, where Paul says in Hebrews 1:6, “But when He again brings”—when God brings into the world—“His firstborn Son into the inhabited world, He says, ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him’”? When God sends His firstborn, the angels will worship Him. Who, then, is God’s secondborn? Let us not rush and let us not be scandalized. When it says “firstborn” here, it means the only-born, the sole Son, the Only-Begotten. Just as Christ is the firstborn of His mother, so He is the firstborn of the Father. And just as He is the Only-Begotten of His mother, so He is the Only-Begotten of the Father. “God sent His Only-Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Does “only,” then, mean “first”? Here “firstborn” means the only-born, just as Adam is called the first-formed. What was Adam? What do we call him? Do we not call him the first-formed? Have you never found Adam called the first-formed in Holy Scripture? Adam is mentioned in the Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 7, verse 1, and chapter 10, verse 1. The Wisdom of Solomon calls him the first-formed. Who, in the same sense, was formed second after Adam? No one. Does that mean there can be no first-formed? For someone to be called first-formed, must there also be a second-formed? Since there is no second-formed, must there also be no first-formed? And yet there is a first-formed, though there is no second-formed. So do not be scandalized, and do not rush to conclusions.

Let us hear the teaching of the divine John Chrysostom. What does the Evangelist mean when he says, “He did not know her until she had borne her Son”? Listen. “‘Until,’” he says—that is, the “until” in the expression “until she had borne”—“is used here not to make you suspect that he knew her afterward.” It was not said for that reason, “but so that you may learn that before the birth pangs, before she gave birth, the virgin was entirely untouched.” The Evangelist did not say this to tell you what happened afterward. He simply told you what had happened before: that the Child who was born had no connection whatever with a man. “He did not know her.”

This is why the battle is waged against Him. “She will bear a son through the Holy Spirit”; “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife,” and so forth. If any of you, for one reason or another, are troubled by this passage, examine it carefully. Examine it carefully, because the matter is not as we hastily and superficially imagine it to be. Now, another event that must not pass unnoticed is the two revelations: the revelation to the shepherds and the revelation to the Magi.

They are representative types of the learned and the unlearned, of simple people and intellectuals. In the persons of the shepherds we see simple people, while in the persons of the Magi—those wise and learned men—we see the intellectuals. Yet they did not discover Christ; Christ was revealed to them. This is both a lesson for the present and an eternal lesson: Christ is not discovered; He is revealed. Christ is known not by those who possess only intellect, but by those who also possess a heart.

It all begins in the human heart, which directs the nous, the spiritual intellect. According to the Fathers, the human intellect is bought and paid for by the heart. If a person is wicked at heart, he will also be wicked in his intellect. Do not imagine that knowledge and intelligence can change a person if his heart does not change. That is why, as you know, in the Old Testament God asks for the human heart in Proverbs: “My son, give Me your heart.” That is where everything begins. Christ, then, was revealed to the shepherds. He sent a special angel, evidently Gabriel, who said to them, among other things:

“Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be for all the people.” It is for the whole world, but you are the first to hear of it. What is this joyful news you announce to us, O angel? “For unto you”—for your sake—“is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David,” and so forth. Then he also told them exactly how they would recognize Him, so that they would not be mistaken and take some other child born that night in Bethlehem for the One they sought. He gave them the proper signs: the Child would not be in a house, but in a manger, and so forth. And that is how they found Him. Thus, God’s first revelation to the world was given to simple people.

The first eyes counted worthy to behold the God-Man, Christ, were those of the simple shepherds. This also answers those who twist the meaning of the words, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” When we say, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” we do not mean the uneducated. We mean those who may have great intelligence but lay it at the feet of God. They have no pride—that is the point. Christ is not for fools; He is for the intelligent. And Christians are the truly intelligent ones. We call intelligent those who succeed in this world, who trample over others and use every sort of trick.

They are applauded by other people and by themselves. But the most intelligent person is the one who has succeeded in finding himself and giving himself to Christ. If you wish, if we have the opportunity and are still alive, come on Sunday and hear Sunday’s talk on the theology of Saint Anthony the Great. There you will see how these things truly stand. Christ was also revealed to people of distinction and learning. God sent a special star in the East, and they came, saying, “For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” They believed that He had been born, and these distinguished men set out and traveled for nearly two years

to find a Child in a cradle and worship Him as God, as both sacrifice and sacrificer. I draw this meaning from the gifts they offered. They are representative figures of the intellectuals. Learning does not hinder you, just as it did not hinder so many Saints. Saint Paul alone could surpass, as the saying goes, all the learned and all the intellectuals. Saint Paul alone! I am not even speaking of Saint Athanasius or Saint Basil the Great, who left Athens with seven degrees. Nor am I speaking of Saint Catherine, with her five degrees, who silenced one hundred and fifty Athenian orators.

I am not speaking of Saint Nicholas, Saint Ambrose, Saint Epiphanius, Saint Gregory, John Chrysostom, or the other Saints. Saint Paul alone is enough. Paul of Tarsus could sweep all the learned and intellectuals into the sea with a single rod, so to speak. And yet he calls himself “a servant of Jesus Christ.” How can a person grasp and understand that? People mock and ridicule us because we acknowledge the Lord and call ourselves servants—though in truth we do not serve Him. For us it is merely a title, written on paper with a pen. We say that we are sinners, and so forth, but in our deeds we do not believe it completely. We speak humbly, but we do not possess humility.

We must understand this. These men evidently had pure hearts. They received Him and came, giving their time, their money, their labor—what did they not give in order to come and see Him? Yet Holy Scripture is only a hundred yards away, and people will not go to see and worship, not even in their need, and in a thousand other circumstances. There are those among us who have never gone to the Holy Land, to the tomb of our God. God came from the farthest reaches of Heaven down to earth, yet we do not go to the tomb of our God. Christ was revealed, then, and the shepherds hold the foremost place among the first witnesses. As the Evangelist Luke says in chapter two, verse seventeen: “When they had seen”—when those blessed eyes had seen—“when they had seen,”

“they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.” For the angel had told them beforehand exactly how they would find Him. And indeed, they went and saw. Do you know who the first Apostles were? The shepherds. And do you know who the second Apostles were? The Magi. The disciples who later set out from the Upper Room came much later—much later indeed. In the days following the Nativity, then, we encounter the visit of the Magi, the shepherds, and all these events. When Christ was eight days old, He came to be circumcised. This too is something

from the Old Testament which today has, of course, been replaced by infant Baptism. I do not know whether you are aware of that.

Read Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians, and you will see that circumcision was indeed replaced by infant Baptism. No uncircumcised person was a friend of God. He had no right to eat the Passover lamb.

And today, no unbaptized person has the right to partake of the Paschal Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Many are scandalized because among us this is done through infant Baptism. And today, especially because of civil marriage, many people are debating this matter.

Even people who hold positions of theological authority are involved, and unfortunately we do not hear them saying what is right.

Since this matter has come before us, I would like to say just a few words for you to keep in mind. Many people, without considering the matter carefully—even Church figures—have spoken and continue to speak in favor of civil marriage. I am not addressing that subject in itself; it is not truly Holy Matrimony at all, but we are simply discussing it. These people have not considered the consequences, the repercussions. And what consequence do I mean here? The Baptism of their children. I do not think anyone could be more inconsistent than a person who rejects the Mystery of Holy Matrimony, the Church, and God, yet accepts the Baptism of his children and takes them to be baptized.

Such a person would be the exception. Perhaps one in a thousand might do this, but the others will not. Before long, therefore, we will have unbaptized children in our streets. If such a child dies—perhaps through aspiration—what will happen? If baptized, the child will go to Paradise. If unbaptized, the child will go to Hell.

Some people—and I even heard a theologian say this—claim that a person must freely ask for Baptism himself and must already believe before being baptized. Did anyone ask me when I was baptized? Did my father, who had me baptized, ask me? I said to him, “Were you conscious when you were baptized, so that someone could ask you? Did you have an opinion?” Since the Church and Christ say that the child should be baptized, must they first ask for your personal opinion? But let me ask you one thing, I told him. You were baptized without being asked. What harm did they do to you? Now that you have grown up, are you not free to renounce your Baptism and refuse to believe?

Was it some great hardship? They put you in oil and water. Your mother bathed you two hundred or three hundred times; this was simply one more bath. Very well. But if in the meantime you had died at one, two, three, five, seven, eight, or nine years of age, you would have gone to Paradise. See, then, what your mother, father, and the Church did for you: they placed a treasure in your hands. Now that you have grown up, acquired understanding, and examined matters for yourself, you can throw that treasure away. They did you no harm. Yet unfortunately there are many people, even clergy, who speak in favor of civil marriage. “At least,” they say, “we will know whose children we have.” Really? Whose do you have, or what do you have? But that remains the same whether you baptize the child or not. Is that seriously the argument? This little child, once baptized, has been grafted in.

Then, easily and quickly, the child may hear a sermon and come to metanoia, to repentance. But to place an adult in the water and baptize him may be impossible. Is it the same thing for me to speak to baptized sinners and to the unbaptized? Is it the same when one can return through Confession, enter again into Christ, and go to Paradise, while the other still needs to enter the baptismal font? Infant Baptism, then, has been present in the Church and in the Gospel from the earliest years. This is not my main subject; I mention it only because the Lord’s circumcision has now been replaced by our infant Baptism. If Christ underwent the Old Testament type, did He know that He was being circumcised? You may say, “But Christ was God.” Did the other children know anything or understand what was happening? Yet if a child was not circumcised, he could not eat the Passover.

He was not a friend of God. Read the seventeenth chapter of Genesis, where God first commanded Abraham to practice circumcision, and so forth. Read also what happened at Gilgal, where they had no knives and used sharp stones to cut away the foreskin. Go and read it. Did God make a mistake? God made no mistake at all. Just as the eight-day-old infants then did not know what was happening, they received what their parents and the Lord offered them. The same occurs here in infant Baptism. On the day of His circumcision, the Child was given His name—the eighth day. And if you open the service books of the Church, you will find that on the first day the Church goes

and offers the appointed prayers for the mother who has given birth and for the infant. On the eighth day, the child is brought to the Church, a service is held, and the child is given a name. There are prayers and a service specifically for the naming of a child. What took place on the eighth day then takes place on the eighth day now. And afterward, if possible within the first forty days, the Baptism should take place. Baptism was not performed at twelve or thirteen years of age. This is the circumcision. Then comes Saint Basil the Great,

and then comes New Year’s Day. That is the order. The great lesson is that Christ fulfilled the Law and asks us also to fulfill the Law. On that same day the Church presents Him at twelve years of age—twelve years old in the Temple—and after New Year’s Day presents Him at thirty years of age, being baptized. In a single day, she shows Him at eight days old at His circumcision, at twelve years old in the Temple, and at thirty years old entering His public ministry—at His Baptism and the beginning of His public ministry.

In the Old Testament, the people were commanded to gather for worship.

Our Christ, in fulfillment of the Law, goes to worship in the Temple. As you know, when He came to the Temple, there was the incident in which His parents lost Him for three days. This is a type of our Christ’s three-day burial. Many truths were spoken there. In any case, after that, all trace of Him disappears from the age of twelve until the age of thirty, when He appears again, is baptized by the Honorable Forerunner, and begins His public ministry. In an earlier talk, we spoke about this question: where was Christ from the age of twelve until thirty?

Even our own people are uninformed about this. Believers themselves are uninformed on the subject and do not know how to answer. So people try to portray Christ as having gone beyond the borders of Palestine; indeed, they place Him in India for eighteen whole years, supposedly studying there and even learning the arts of the fakirs. You know the tricks the fakirs perform. They have themselves buried and then rise again—not after the thirty-three hours that our Christ lay buried, but after seventy or seventy-five hours. Then people say, “What did Christ do? He did the same thing to Himself.” Because we are uninformed about these matters, we marvel at the feat and at their cleverness. There is one basic distinction between the burial of a fakir and the burial of Christ that I want you to know: fakirs are buried alive, not dead. They are buried alive. Our Christ died; He was put to death. Our Christ was pierced in the side, and blood and water came forth. According to medical science, the separation of the serum from the blood proves His death.

So let us take a fakir, crucify him as Christ was crucified, thrust a spear into him from below, drain out his blood and water, and then bury him. Let us see whether he will rise again. Yet we stand there open-mouthed, like foolish little birds, thinking, “Yes, perhaps that is how it happened.” We do not look deeply enough to see the difference between the one and the other. Do you understand? Besides, what would Christ have needed that art for? He would have needed it only for Himself, because nowhere else did our Christ make use of any such art. From a distance He commanded, “Lazarus, come forth!” At that very moment, the sisters objected: “No, Lord; by now he smells, for he has been dead four days.” But wait and listen to what I have told you.

Turn around—yes, if you are up there.

He comes out of the tomb. And they say, “Here is the fakir’s art. He must have learned it—but did He learn it only for Himself?” Yet our Christ was not some living fakir who buried Himself; others buried Him. He also left His traces there: the linen cloths lying in place, the burial sheets that had been wrapped around Him,

and the face cloth folded in a place by itself. “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” However much you may try to conceal Me, the stones will speak; lifeless things will speak. And indeed, lifeless things bore witness concerning the Resurrection. Did our Christ never go away? I told you the day before yesterday.

We have written a special booklet entitled Where Was Christ from the Age of Twelve to Thirty?, supported by scriptural testimony. There is also a special recording, Where Was Christ from Twelve to Thirty? So Christ now appears at the age of thirty. He comes to where John is and takes His place in the line to be baptized. It seems that John did not at first recognize the Lord with absolute certainty by His appearance alone. For the Holy Spirit—God Himself—had told him that the One upon whom he saw the dove, the Holy Spirit, descend bodily would be the One. Yet by this point he must evidently have recognized Him. How, I do not know, because we find John pointing Him out from afar and saying, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” He calls Him the Lamb,

first of all because He was to be slain and bear the sins of the world. As Isaiah says about Him eight hundred and fifty years before Christ: “Like an innocent lamb, silent before the one who shears him.” In any case, our Christ’s turn came to be baptized by John. John administered a baptism of metanoia, of repentance. This is where many people stumble. They say, “Christ was baptized at the age of thirty. Why would you baptize this little child? Let the child reach thirty, as Christ did, and then it can be done.” But I have already told you what would happen, and I explained the consequences earlier. Christ was baptized, but He also proclaimed the Baptism with which we are to be baptized.

Our Baptism is called the Baptism of salvation, not a baptism of repentance. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Our Christ entered the water. Ordinarily, John would have kept the person in the water while he confessed his sins; but because Christ had no sins, He came straight up out of the water. The others were kept in the water. John himself explained this: “I baptize you in water with a baptism of repentance. He who comes after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. He will give this to you. I baptize you and prepare you; I carry out a preparation.” A baptism of repentance, then, is one thing, and the Baptism of salvation is another. Do you know what John’s baptism of repentance is for us? It is metanoia and Holy Confession.

Metanoia and Holy Confession are the baptism of repentance. Saint Gregory of Nyssa says, “Even a single falling tear is equal in power to the laver.” A second Baptism is not permitted, because Baptism resembles Christ’s death and burial. That happened once; it does not happen many times. This is precisely why there is a second baptism, namely metanoia and Holy Confession. Baptism deals with a person’s sins up to the moment he is baptized. For sins committed after Baptism, there is Holy Confession—metanoia and Holy Confession. A Protestant once asked me, “Where did you find Holy Confession?”

He said, “Christ told people there to be baptized; He did not tell them to confess.” But they had not yet been baptized. Holy Confession concerns sins committed after Baptism; it is not for one’s first Baptism. As long as a person is unbaptized, Baptism removes everything—both ancestral sin and personal sins. Read about the Fathers who postponed their Baptism so that they might be baptized as late as possible, be made as clean as possible, and have everything washed away in it. Many are greatly scandalized by the life of Saint Constantine. “He was a murderer,” they say, and so forth. Yes, but when was he baptized? Baptism took all of it away and cleansed everything.

John understood immediately. He said to Him, “Are You coming to be baptized by me? I need to be baptized by You.” Christ replied, “Let it be so now. Leave these matters aside for the moment, for we must fulfill all righteousness.” All righteousness. “Is it not a command from My Father that I be baptized? Have I not become fully man? Therefore, I too must obey and fulfill My Father’s command.” I say this because many of us often say, “This does not matter, and that does not matter.” Everything matters when Christ has commanded that it be done. We cannot say that we love Christ if we do not keep His commandments. He says, “He who loves Me will keep My word.”

“He who loves Me will keep My commandments.” So if we do not keep the commandments, how can we possibly prove that we love Him? Christ accepts circumcision; Christ goes to worship in the Temple; Christ prays; Christ is baptized. Who, then, are you or I to say, “This does not matter,” or, “That does not matter”? It is wrong. I can understand someone saying, “I cannot do it at this moment.” I can also understand someone saying, “Lord, help me put this right.” But I cannot understand calling something unimportant when God has commanded it. And you, too, should take care never to think that way, but strive to fulfill His command.

There is a baptism of repentance; there is the Baptism of salvation; there is the second baptism of metanoia and Holy Confession; and there is also baptism in blood. The most perfect Baptism is baptism in blood. The Lord says, “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” This is the cup of death and the baptism of blood. Many unbaptized people were baptized through their own blood in martyrdom, just as the fourteen thousand infants were baptized in their blood. Someone asked me, “Who baptized the Honorable Forerunner?” His own blood baptized him.

So, regarding the baptism of the Honorable Forerunner, that is the reasoning: who baptized the Honorable Forerunner?

Thus Christ fulfilled everything. He was tempted in the wilderness and then entered His public ministry. Meanwhile, John came to the end of his life. When our Christ learned of it, He withdrew, left that place, came to Nazareth, and began to preach. What is striking is that He spoke the same words John had spoken: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” But Christ added two words: “And believe in the Gospel.” John did not say this. John said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” Our Christ adds, “And believe in the Gospel.” Mark, chapter one, verse fifteen.

Why am I telling you this? Because this is a vast subject, and it could form an entire talk in itself: why did our Christ speak exactly the same words that John spoke? Why did Christ come into the world, beloved?

He came to give mankind what mankind had failed to offer. Some say that man was driven out of Paradise only because of his sin, because of his transgression. No—not only because of that, but also because of his refusal to repent. If Adam and Eve had repented then and said, “Yes, I did it,” instead of shifting the blame—Adam onto Eve, Eve onto the serpent, and both of them onto God, who had made both the serpent and Eve—the matter would have been resolved there. But they not only sinned; they also refused to repent. We therefore found ourselves outside Paradise because of our sin and our lack of repentance.

So He says, “Go down and tell those wretched descendants of unrepentant Adam to repent, if they wish to return to Paradise.” This proclamation was valid then, is valid now, and will remain valid. Go and listen to a secret prayer that the priest says in the evening at Vespers, when he entrusts the Church to Christ. No one knows whether today he may be entrusting his parish to Christ for the last time, and he says, “Receive it in metanoia and Holy Confession. Receive it in metanoia and Holy Confession.” Go and hear what the departed person says through the chanter’s voice: “Through metanoia, I too have found the way.”

“Make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” So he is on his way to Paradise. How did he find the way? “Through metanoia—through repentance—I too have found the way.” Whatever else you may possess in abundance, if there is no repentance, do whatever you like—there is no salvation. That is why Saint Isaac the Syrian calls repentance “the Mystery of God’s loving-kindness, and grace after grace.” The first grace is Baptism, and the grace that follows is repentance. “And believe in the Gospel.” The Gospel is Christ. And what is the good news? It is that the Son of God will become the Son of the Virgin. This is the Annunciation. It is not enough to believe superficially, merely saying, “I believe in one God, in one Christ.”

“Begotten, not made.” I believe, I believe, I believe. You must learn the twelve articles of the Creed and live by them. And you must stand firm: “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear.” Hold fast to these twelve articles, and then you will lay the necessary foundation. There is not enough time for us to discuss this subject now. Perhaps God will grant that we continue it. For now, I pray that the Holy God, who has given us this time, will help us attend to these details, because we need them in this world for the sake of that other world, which I pray you may inherit. Amen.

είπανε να φέρει τους γονείς του και λέγει έτσι: «Καὶ οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν μέχρι που ἐκλήθησαν οἱ γονεῖς». Πίστεψαν έπειτα; Δεν πίστεψαν. Βλέπεις εδώ; Έχει άλλες ωραίες περιπτώσεις. Ανάλογες. Όταν λέει απέλυσε τον κόρακα από την κιβωτό, δεν επέστρεψε, λέει, ο κόραξ «ἕως τοῦ ξηρανθῆναι τὸ ὕδωρ». Ώστε όσο είχε νερό ο κόρακας δεν ήρθε. Τώρα που ξεράθηκαν τα ύδατα, πήγε και μπήκε μέσα στην κιβωτό και καθόταν ο κόρακας;

Σε άλλο μέρος λέγει: «Η θυγάτηρ», λέγει, «Μελχόλ δεν γέννησε έως του θανάτου αυτής». Μέχρι που πέθανε δεν γέννησε, άρα θα γέννησε έπειτα, μετά θάνατον; Και εντούτοις υπάρχουν άνθρωποι οι οποίοι δεν θέλουν να ακολουθήσουν το πνεύμα της Εκκλησίας και πιάνονται από αυτή τη λέξη, όπως πιάνονται και από τη λέξη «πρωτότοκος». Μα λέει «πρωτότοκος». Μπορείς να μου δείξεις τους δευτερότοκους, τους υστερότοκους; Μπορείς να μου τους δείξεις; Μα γράφει «οι αδελφοί του Κυρίου» και «αδελφές» γράφει. Είναι αδελφοί του Κυρίου και αδελφές; Από πού το βγάζεις; Αδελφός θα πει συγγενής. Πώς σε λέγεται; Μάλλον, τι ήταν ο Αβραάμ με τον Λωτ; Τι συγγένεια είχαν, ξέρετε;

Ορισμένοι, και ήκουσα και έναν μάλιστα θεολόγο, ότι ο άνθρωπος πρέπει μόνος του, εν τη ελευθερία του, να ζητήσει το βάπτισμά του, να πιστεύει κιόλας. Προτού να τον βαφτίσεις. Ερώτησε εμένα που με βάφτισες; Με ρώτησε ο πατέρας μου που με βάφτισε; Λέω, ήσουν εκεί που σε βάφτισε εσύ ώστε να σε ρωτήσει; Είχες γνώμη; Εφόσον η Εκκλησία και ο Χριστός λέγει να βαφτίζει, εσένα τη γνώμη τη δικιά σου θα σου πάρουνε; Αλλά θα ήθελα να σε ρωτήσω, του λέω, ένα πράγμα. Σε βάφτισαν και δεν σε ρώτησανε. Τι κακό σου κάμαν; Δεν μπορείς εσύ σήμερα που μεγάλωσες να απεμπολήσεις το βάπτισμά σου, να μην πιστέψεις;

Αυτά που σας λέγω, γιατί είναι ένα θέμα ολόκληρο και μεγάλο, που μπορούσε να αποτελέσει ολόκληρη ομιλία αυτό: γιατί ο Χριστός μας είπε τα ίδια ακριβώς λόγια τα οποία είπε ο Ιωάννης; Γιατί ήρθε ο Χριστός στον κόσμο, αγαπητοί;
