Summary

The Church’s Nativity services unite events separated in time, emphasizing their theological meaning rather than presenting a strict chronology. Joseph’s intention to dismiss Mary quietly reveals both his righteousness and his mercy, while the angel explains that her child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. With no room available, Christ is laid in a manger, and humble shepherds become the first to hear the angelic proclamation and worship the newborn Savior.

As you know, we have come to the last Sunday before Christmas. It would be good this evening to say something related to the feast, something that might lead us to pay attention to certain aspects of this great celebration. I do not know whether you have noticed that when we go to Church on Christmas night, we find Christ already born, and we hear specifically from the second chapter of Matthew the events he recounts: “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea...”

“In the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?’” In other words, Matthew tells us about events that took place immediately after the birth.

He does not recount the events of the birth itself. There is a sequence here. The events of the birth are read on the eve of the feast; they are recounted on Christmas Eve. Most of us, of course, do not go to Church then, either because of work or because there is not a church holding a service on the eve in every place. So we do not know what is said about the birth itself. We hear only what happened after the birth: the coming of the wise men, not the shepherds—even though the Church also celebrates the adoration of the wise men.

The adoration of the shepherds and that of the wise men took place about two years apart, yet they are celebrated on the same day. This is because the Church’s purpose is not to present the precise chronological order of events, but to proclaim that these events truly took place. Exactly when each one occurred is not her chief concern. Here is the proof: at Christmas, on the twenty-fifth of the month, Christ is one day old. On the first day of the year, eight days later, Christ is eight days old and receives circumcision. Yet on the sixth of January, only about twelve days after Christmas, He is thirty years old and is baptized. Then on the second of February He is forty days old and is taken for the observance of the fortieth day. You see: at one point He is thirty years old, yet He has not even reached forty days! He will be forty days old on the second of February, though on the sixth of January He appears at the age of thirty and is baptized. The Church’s purpose, then, is not to preserve a strictly chronological sequence. That is precisely why, as I told you, the Church celebrates together both the adoration of the shepherds, which took place on the day of His birth, and the adoration of the wise men, which took place about two years later. So this evening I wanted to bring to light this neglected event, almost buried in a forgotten corner: the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Matthew does not record it.

Luke records it, after the two annunciations—to John and to our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). He then recounts the birth of John and, later, the birth of our Lord from the Most Holy Theotokos. For, as we know, according to His humanity John was six months older than Christ. But before God, according to Christ’s divinity, John is nothing; Christ comes before him. As John himself says: “He who comes after me”—six months after me—“has come before me.” As man, Christ would be six months younger, but as God He is greater than I, and I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandals. This event, then, is recorded only by the Evangelist Luke, in his second chapter.

He tells us why and how the birth took place there in Bethlehem. Allow me, then, to speak this evening. I do not know how well you know these things; I pray that you know them all, and even more than I am about to say. But for the sake of those who do not know, I will speak by the grace of the Lord. Let me therefore read from the second chapter of Luke.

It says: “In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration, when Quirinius was governing Syria.” Luke brings in historical figures from public life in order to establish...

...from history, approximately when these things took place. It is as though we were to say, “in the reign of George II,” or “under the government of Karamanlis,” or Papandreou, or whoever it might be: this happened when those rulers were in power. That is why he speaks of Caesar Augustus, of Syria, of Quirinius, and so forth. In any case, he presents it as a historical event, you understand—as a historical event. So Caesar issued an order for a census to be taken. He wanted to know how many people were under his rule. We too have lived through such censuses. I think I have been registered in two. Others may have taken part in more; I do not know. Some may never have taken part in one. “And all went to be registered, each to his own city.”

When elections are held, people begin moving about. Some leave for the provinces, others come from the provinces to the city; people travel from one city to another, and everything becomes tangled. Each person goes to the place where he was born, where his family line is rooted. We see something similar even now: those who have not transferred what are called their voting rights return to their native place to vote. Something like that happened here. The whole population of the Roman Empire at that time was set in motion. Naturally, Joseph and Mary also had to travel. Each person, it says, went to his own city. “And Joseph also went up...”

“...from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David.” Among all the people who were traveling, Joseph also set out from Nazareth, a city in Galilee, and came into Judea, to Bethlehem, the city of David. For Joseph and Mary, as the evidence shows, belonged to the lineage of David and had to go there to be registered. That city is far away. On foot, it takes about five days to come from Galilee, from Nazareth, all the way there.

Today the distance is about one hundred and seventy kilometers, under modern conditions. In those days they would have had to climb and pass through ravines and so forth. I do not know how many turns and detours they would have made, or whether people could really walk twelve hours a day. They needed five days. Five times twelve is sixty hours, and even today the distance is more than one hundred and seventy kilometers. You understand what that meant with the primitive means available then: either on foot or perhaps with a little donkey, since the young woman was pregnant, with all the hardships involved and nowhere to rest. Yet they had to go there to be registered; they had no choice. It says here that Bethlehem is the city of David. I do not know whether you know how that came about or where the story begins. You must turn to the Old Testament, to 1 Samuel, chapter 16.

There you will find the following events. Saul was king of Israel, but his relationship with God was not good. So God resolved to replace him and instructed the Prophet Samuel to fill his horn with oil—a horn was hollowed out and used in those days as a vessel for holy oil, as we might say—and to go to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse the Bethlehemite. Jesse was David’s father. Samuel was to anoint as king one of his eight sons, the one whom God would show him. And indeed, that is what happened.

It is interesting to read this passage, because it contains what we might call a stratagem of God. Someone may ask, “Does God also use stratagems?” He uses good stratagems, not wicked ones. Good ones. Do you know what the stratagem was? Samuel said to Him, “If Saul realizes that I have gone there, I am finished. He will understand what sort of business I have gone there to carry out, and I am finished.” God told him, “Take a calf and appear to be going there to offer a sacrifice. Invite Jesse and others to pray with you. In this way you will enter without arousing the slightest suspicion, and you will carry out the task I am giving you.” God Himself instructed him to do this. You see, then, that there can also be good and righteous cunning.

God does not accept our own schemes, because our schemes are wicked. But when the purpose is good—to forestall some danger, for example—a person may be allowed to act with discretion. In any case, that is why the sacrifice is mentioned. Samuel went there, and after the sacrifice they returned to the house—as we might say, to offer the visitor a cup of coffee—and Samuel told Jesse to bring his sons before him. Jesse brought them in one by one, while Samuel waited for the Holy Spirit to tell him which one to anoint as king. The first passed before him, then the second, and so on, until all seven had passed. Not one was chosen. Samuel asked him, “Do you have another son?” Jesse said, “No.” “You have no other son at all?” “There is one slight, young boy whom I left out. What could he possibly do? We have him...”

“...while here are the educated ones, who even know how to play chess, whose hands are well groomed and who have an impressive bearing. These are the ones fit to be kings.” Samuel told him, “I will not sit down to eat until you bring the other one, so that I may complete the work for which God sent me.” At the same time, God teaches Samuel a lesson: “Take heed. You human beings look at outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” This was the king. So they sent for David. David was somewhere out in the fields of Bethlehem, tending his father’s sheep. He was unkempt, with his little bag and his piece of cornbread inside it, his heels dry and cracked, his skin darkened by the sun—however he may have looked—living there among the wild beasts around Bethlehem.

So he too came, without knowing what awaited him. As soon as he entered, Scripture describes him as “ruddy and with beautiful eyes”—his eyes flashed, as we would say. Samuel was immediately told by the Holy Spirit, “This is the one you shall anoint as king.” What fine suit and tie did he have? None at all. He had come from the sheepfold and the fields, and he was the one who would receive the kingdom. In any case, he was anointed king. Generations then passed—fourteen and fourteen, as we shall hear today—until we come to Joseph the Betrothed, the man supposed to be Mary’s husband, from whom Christ was born. They were descendants of the royal lineage of David. And because David was from Bethlehem, they properly had to go there. Thus the couple found themselves there, and what followed came to pass. We should now pause to see how matters had led them to this point.

It began, rather, with that strange conception. You saw how Joseph wished to send Mary away, did you not? He could not account for her pregnancy. As the Akathist Hymn says, he was “suspecting a secret union.” But the matter could not remain that way, and Heaven had to send him an angel, who spoke those beautiful and profound words: “Joseph, son of David”—that is, descendant of David—“do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her”—not that which is born from her, but “that which is conceived in her.” In biblical usage, it is the man who begets through the woman, while the woman gives birth.

Earlier the genealogy does not say that Sarah begot Isaac. It says, “Isaac begot Jacob”; it does not say that Rebecca begot him. “Jacob begot Judah and his brothers”; it does not say that Rachel begot them. But when it reaches Joseph, the man supposed to be Mary’s husband, it says, “from whom Christ was born.” Up to this point men have been begetting, but here, at this birth, a woman gives birth. The strangeness of it immediately confronts us. That is why Matthew then turns to explain it: “Do not be troubled. The birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: when Mary His mother had been betrothed to Joseph, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.” This scandalized the elder, and he considered putting her away secretly, because he could not keep her in his house—which, as he understood it, would mean keeping sin in his house.

He regarded it as sin. “Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her publicly, resolved to put her away secretly.” Yet he could not simply cover the matter up. Could he hand her over and say, “Lord, I have nothing to do with her”? An adulteress was condemned to be stoned. If a pregnant woman appeared in public without a husband, the Law prescribed that she be stoned. That is why Joseph was given to her as a protector, so that she would not be stoned. He thought, “I will send her somewhere far away. If they discover her, then they discover her; if she escapes, then she escapes. But I cannot keep her in my house, because God forbids me to conceal fornication.” This is a very useful lesson for our own days. Do you think that if Joseph’s spirit existed today, there would be all the fornication and adultery that we now see?

You know that today fornication and adultery have reached perhaps eighty or ninety percent, and this increase comes because we shelter, nourish, and conceal those who act unlawfully, and we make things easier for them. Worse still, we think we are providing a service, that we are doing good, that we are helping: “Here is our car, here is our telephone, here is our room, here is money, here are lies, here are schemes”—one thing after another, with everyone joining in. And we imagine that we are helping. Nor does this begin only with grown men and women. It begins at school. This corruption and concealment begin at school, from the age of ten. Girls hide other people’s secret notes in here; and if there were not others willing to act as accomplices and keep them hidden, perhaps many lives would not be ruined.

They cover things up, lying to the father, to the parents, and so on. “Katina was here; Prokopis was there,” while the girl goes off and abandons the baby at the hospital. This is a great lesson, and it must not pass unnoticed, especially during these days. This is what the words mean: “Being a righteous man, I cannot keep you with me; yet I do not want to expose you to public disgrace either, because they will stone you soon afterward. If I expose you... I will send you far away, quietly and secretly, and so nothing will happen.” In any case, this is how righteous Joseph reasons as a man. From above, God sees the struggle taking place within him. But this is not the truth; the young woman must not be stoned. So God sends the angel, who speaks those beautiful words: “Take heed, son of David.” Joseph is not literally David’s son; he is David’s descendant. And here I would like you to pay attention to the words: “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife.” Protestants among us say, “Do you not see that he calls her his wife?” But he also calls Joseph a son of David. Is he literally David’s son?

You interpret one expression literally, you most devious man, while interpreting the other spiritually? Just as Joseph is not literally David’s son, so Mary is not literally his wife. The angel is speaking in human terms, according to how things appeared. That was how he had to speak. To the world, she appeared to be Joseph’s wife, and he would shield her pregnancy; otherwise, she would be stoned. “That which is conceived in her,” I repeat, “is of the Holy Spirit.” Christ was formed within her. Christ was conceived through the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. “That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. For He will save His people from their sins.” He has not yet been born; He has only now been conceived, and yet He already has a people—“His people.”

This is the people He will gather to Himself, those who will believe in Him. “He will save His people from their sins.” This proves that He is also God. He is not only the son of Mary; He is also the Son of God. How can He have a people before He has even been born? A person must take all these things in, put them in order, and understand, I repeat, why these two were compelled to travel all the way to Bethlehem, the City of David. It was because both Joseph and our Most Holy Theotokos were descendants of David and, indeed, belonged to the royal line. There is a beautiful image of a vine: Christ is the vine, with the Apostles upon its branches like clusters of grapes. Perhaps you have seen it.

There is a similar icon of Jesse, based on the words, “from the root of Jesse.” I have seen it myself. I have been told that it also exists on the Holy Mountain, at the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou. They tell me there is one at Oraiotissa as well, though I have not noticed it there. But I have seen this icon in the Chapel of the Burning Bush at Sinai. At the bottom you see Jesse, and from the root—from his belly, from his loins—all the branches come forth. There you also see our Most Holy Theotokos and Christ, because according to His humanity, Christ also comes from the root of Jesse. Our Most Holy Theotokos belonged to the royal line and, so to speak, gave Christ royal flesh.

In any case, they went, and the text says, “to be registered with Mary.”

“His betrothed wife, who was with child.” Keep hold of that expression, “betrothed wife.” She is still his betrothed. It does not simply say “wife”; it says that she is still his betrothed—his betrothed wife. Now, when she was three months pregnant, the angel said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife”; he did not say “your betrothed.” That is how Matthew writes it. But then Luke comes along: the woman is now nine months pregnant and about to give birth, yet he still calls her Joseph’s betrothed. Here we encounter what are called the idiomatic expressions and Hebraisms of Scripture. Luke, being Greek and knowing the Greek language properly, states the matter clearly: she is still his betrothed.

That is how our language works. Matthew mentions our Most Holy Theotokos alongside other brothers of Christ and so on, and someone draws the conclusion that there were other children in the family and that Joseph was Christ’s father, along with various other claims. Luke, however, being Greek, clarifies this matter as well. I do not know whether you have ever read in the third chapter of Luke that Joseph was Christ’s supposed father. Luke makes this absolutely clear in the plainest Greek.

How does he put it? “Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph.” “As was supposed.” Luke makes it clear and leaves no room for doubt. In the same way, here he says, “betrothed.” So I can say to the Protestant—to Mr. So-and-so—“His wife? Here Scripture says that she was his betrothed on the very day she was to give birth.” What is shown further on? That Joseph always remained apart from her. And what did this bride remain? What became of her? She remained unwedded, just as the Church chants: “Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.” These are words we ought to mark in our Scriptures, so that we may answer objections, guard ourselves, and also help those people, if any of them are willing.

They failed to notice this. “The days were completed for her to give birth.” As it happened, the time had come; the nine months had evidently been completed, and she was ready to give birth. Naturally, then, they looked for somewhere to stay. People must have seen that she was close to giving birth. They must have asked here and there; perhaps they pointed to her belly, and Joseph may have pleaded, “Not for me, but for the lady. Can nothing be done?” But nothing could be done, as the Evangelist tells us: “And she gave birth to her firstborn Son, wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the lodging place.” No room was found in the inns and other lodgings. Many people had evidently traveled there because of the census, and all the places were full. Surely they also asked at private homes. They had every visible sign and proof of her condition.

They should have been shown some care. Some married woman or young lady could have given up her bed. At the very least, they could have found some small room for this young woman who was expecting a child. But people’s hearts were as hard then as they are today. If Christ were born today, would He even find a manger in which to be born?

Would people offer their hearts so that Christ might be born within them? No. They may do many things for Christ. They may decorate their shopwindows with images of Him, set Him among straw in a display, and do all such things. But there are no hearts—no mangers—for Christ today either. At His Nativity, things were much the same. Here we find the phrase, “She gave birth to her firstborn Son.” But the Protestants and others seize upon it.

They say, “He is the firstborn, so there must be a second-born and then a third-born; therefore, the other children mentioned as the brothers of the Lord truly were Mary’s children.” But when Scripture calls Him the firstborn, it does not mean that other births followed. It means that He was the first child born, the one who first opened the womb. I have one child. What is that child? My firstborn, is he not? And what else is he? My only-begotten. What is Christ? He is both firstborn and Only-begotten: firstborn of His Mother, firstborn of the Father, and Only-begotten of the Father. But they do not wish to understand or pay attention to these things. So when we say “firstborn,” our nous—the spiritual intellect—must not immediately assume that there has to be a second-born. No, there is no second-born. He is the first who opened the womb.

When Paul writes to the Hebrews to convince them that Christ has come, he says, “But when He again brings the Firstborn into the world.” Who, then, is God’s second-born? Does God have other children? He has one Son. “He gave His Only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” He is therefore both firstborn and Only-begotten. Here the word is meant to exclude any previous birth: this is her first childbirth. We must not let our nous—the spiritual intellect—go beyond that. Some time ago I had occasion to write a book devoted to this subject. It is called

“Against the Evangelicals.” The Evangelicals claim that they too believe the Gospel, and yet they prove themselves opposed to the Gospel. That book addresses all these matters: “Joseph,” “son,” “firstborn,” “brothers of the Lord,” “Ever-Virgin,” and so on. It contains all the answers—answers from Scripture for them, and from the Fathers for us Orthodox Christians—so that a person may have fuller proofs and better weapons with which to defend the faith.

Was there ever a greater birth than this? There was not. Was anyone greater ever born into the world? No. And yet this great birth had almost no preparation at all. No one knew—not even our Most Holy Theotokos, who gave birth to Him—what had taken place that night. Later, when she saw the shepherds arrive in the middle of the night and worship Him, and when they told her, “Angels sent us here,” and so forth, the Most Holy Theotokos laid all these things up in her heart. She kept and gathered them there, waiting to see what would happen, who this child was, and what it all meant. She could not yet put everything in order within herself. No official or private citizen knew; no educated or uneducated person knew.

No rabbi and no lawyer knew. No one—absolutely no one—knew what was happening that night. God, the Redeemer of the world, had been born, and no one knew. Here the Evangelist tells us who first received the news, who heard it, and who saw Him. Whose eyes were first counted worthy to behold the God-Man? The Evangelist continues: “Now there were shepherds in that same country, living out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.” In the fields around Bethlehem, shepherds were tending their sheep through the night and guarding them from beasts—both two-legged beasts and

four-legged beasts, for as you know, there are two kinds. So they sat there without a care, tending their sheep. “And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.” That was only natural: they were greatly afraid; they were terrified. “Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy.’” “To you”—the Greek uses the plural pronoun. I bring good tidings to you, not to us. For you know that Christ was not born for the angels; He was born for mankind. What a great honor for the human person! “Behold, I bring you good tidings”—I proclaim glad news to you—“of great joy.”

“Which will be for all the people. For there is born to you”—again, the Greek says “to you”—“this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, in the City of David.” Christ’s name is Jesus, and His title is Christ: Jesus Christ—His name and His title. He is indeed Christ the Lord, the angel says, and He was born “in the City of David,” in Bethlehem. Thus the first to receive the news of this event were shepherds, simple people of the countryside. They were also the first to hear the angels’ joy and the hymn of glory sung at His birth between Heaven and earth. For the Evangelist continues: “And suddenly...”

“There was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.’” Now, do you wish to occupy yourselves with this? Do you desire to see the child who has been born? Pay attention, and I will give you the street and number. Nothing of the sort.

They might otherwise have gone and asked some midwife, for example, “Whom did you deliver tonight?” and then gone to worship that child. But that was not how it happened. “Wait,” the angel says, “and I will give you identifying details.” Then he says: “And this will be the sign to you: you will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” The One who has been born for the joy of the world will not be found in a house. You will find Him in a feeding trough. The shepherds knew the places where such mangers stood, where animals were kept—in caves and similar places. Surely they were also guided there inwardly by the grace of the Holy Spirit, and so they found Him. Then, after the angels had sung, “Glory to God in the highest,” they vanished, and the angel vanished with them. “And it came to pass, when the angels had gone away from them into Heaven...”

The men said to one another... They stopped and held a brief council about what they had heard and seen, and how they should proceed. What did they decide? “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”

How did they know that it was the Lord and not that other one, as we say, playing tricks on them? This is something many people cannot discern. Many people today are led astray. Many speak with the devil, who appears to them as the Most Holy Theotokos or as Saint Nicholas. Since it is Satan disguising himself as someone good, how can a person discern the truth? Something like this happened nearby, out in Liosia, I believe, and an elder from the Holy Mountain dealt with it. He instructed a woman who claimed to see the Most Holy Theotokos and speak with her. He asked her, “Have you ever thanked the Most Holy Theotokos?” “No, I have not,” she replied. “But she does you such an honor, coming to see you and speak with you, and you have not even thanked her?” the elder said. “Do something I shall tell you. So many people know that these experiences are delusions; we must put this one to the test. Do you know what pleases the Most Holy Theotokos?” “No,” she said. “Can you chant, ‘Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace’?” “Oh, I know it,” she said, “and I chant it well.” “Then chant that before her as a word of thanks: ‘Thank you, Gerontissa; thank you for coming to me—if you truly are the Most Holy Theotokos.’” Without any further discussion, she began chanting, “Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace,” and so forth, and the apparition of the Most Holy Theotokos turned away.

It began making obscene gestures; the image started to fade and disappear, and at the end a shrill voice was heard crying, “Shut up, woman!” Was that the Most Holy Theotokos? How, then, did she discover that the apparition was not from the good one, but from the evil one? Through the hymn. Here, likewise, they heard: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.” The evil one cannot endure such words or keep repeating them. The message was genuine. A psalm had been sung; a hymn had been offered. The evil one cannot remain in their presence. He cannot endure such things. So the shepherds were certain that this message was from the Lord—the thing, as they said, that the Lord had told them. What were they to do? They would go. But what if wild beasts devoured the sheep, or thieves—the two-legged beasts I mentioned—stole them and turned them into meat? They would still go down, and they...

left the sheep behind. Here is another great lesson. They let them go rather than lose this opportunity, whereas we, as you know, will not go to such things or make such sacrifices even because of a pair of oxen. “And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger,” exactly as they had been told. “And when they had seen Him, they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this Child.” From the signs and details they had been given, they understood that this truly was the Child of whom the angels had spoken. And the result was this:

“But Mary kept all these sayings and pondered them in her heart.” As I said earlier, there in the night and in that solitude, she saw men suddenly appear and come to worship the Child who had just been born. Clearly, something momentous was taking place. She gathered all these things and stored them within herself, waiting to see what would come of them and what all this meant. And the result was: “Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen.” This is the way of faith: it begins with hearing. I hear, I believe, and afterward I see the fruits of faith. We have turned this order upside down in a satanic way. We do not want to hear; we want to see first. “Unless I see, I will not believe”—that is what we usually say. We want to see and then believe. But that is not the proper order. Faith comes by hearing, not through the eyes. We are wrong to transfer it from hearing to sight. Sight leaves our pride intact, while faith lays pride aside. I have not seen, yet I believe. And when Paul gives the definition of faith, what does he say? Faith is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Though I do not see them, it is as though I hold them in my hands. This is faith, and this is what receives its reward. That is the process followed here: “for all the things that they had heard and...”

“seen, as it was told them.” They heard and acted, and then they were given the opportunity to see the One of whom they had heard from the angels. This is the proper order, and it is this that God rewards. Knowledge is not rewarded by God, because knowledge puffs us up: it creates pride and leaves existing pride untouched. Faith, however, casts all these things aside; faith, so to speak, moves God, and God rewards the person who believes. Thus the first people counted worthy to see Christ—the first eyes counted worthy to behold Him—were those of these simple shepherds, these humble people. And notice here a circle, a complete circle.

Long ago, through Samuel, God called David from the fields of Bethlehem—the man whose lineage would one day lend flesh to God, so that He might be born into the world. And now, in those same fields, the message comes: “Your forefather, who departed from here, left for a purpose. That purpose has been fulfilled this very night. The One descended from you has been born.” Thus the whole circle is completed, and the meeting takes place once again in the fields of Bethlehem. And there is joy between heaven and earth: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men”—among those in whom God was well pleased, and because of His love for mankind. Now someone may ask: Is God only with the poor in spirit? Were there not so many other people?

Should He not have revealed Himself to them as well? Why should the others not have learned of it? Indeed, that makes me wonder too. Why should God be concerned with people’s intellectual abilities, or whether they possess minds capable of finding Him? The proof is that they do not know God. Has anyone ever found God by himself? No one. God finds man; man does not find God. And God finds the person who desires Him. Whoever does not desire Him does not allow himself to be found by God. Two wills must come together: man’s will and God’s will. God looked over the earth and saw that these simple, guileless souls were capable of receiving the news of this great event and living it. And they became the first preachers.

Were the Apostles the first preachers to proclaim the coming of Christ? Were the Magi the first? No, the shepherds were the first preachers. Then came the Magi; then came those who believed at Pentecost and went out to the ends of the inhabited world, speaking the eighteen languages and dialects; and after them came the Apostles. The Apostles came much later. Others had proclaimed these things before them. The Apostles later went and, in many cases, baptized people who had already been taught in other ways. What, then, happened here with Christ? He was revealed. This is why we say that God is not discovered through human knowledge; He reveals Himself.

But do the educated and learned have no relationship with Christ? Of course they do. Christ has subjects from the palace to the stable. He has a learned woman, Saint Catherine—a princess with seven degrees—and He has Saint John the Russian in the stable. He has the towering figure of Paul, and He also has simple people from Cyprus who became saints. He has learned Fathers of great education, and He has the simple Saint Spyridon. Christ does not dwell in people’s intellects, but in their hearts. A person’s education does not trouble Him, whether it is present or absent. What matters is that there be a heart.

Did not the Three Holy Hierarchs believe? Were they not men of learning? Basil the Great left Athens with six degrees, did he not? Saint Basil studied six branches of knowledge. But notice: he laid them all at the feet of Christ. When he went to Caesarea, Macrina and his brothers took hold of him and brought him deeply into Christianity. He put away his books and went into the desert. When he returned after five or six years in the desert, he then entered fully into spiritual life. He laid his books, his papers, and all his learning at the feet of Christ. He did not use them to show that God does not exist, but to show that God does exist. Do not place human reasoning in the way. Pray, because “where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” A person who always demands rational explanations will inevitably become entangled.

God, then, has a relationship with the one class and with the other—with every class and category of people—provided that they are willing. The proof is that men came from Arabia to worship Him. What were the Magi? Were they like the sorcerers here in Megara and Liosia, who cast spells on married couples so that they cannot have children, and so forth? They were not sorcerers. They were holy and highly educated men, with at least four fields of learning: physicians, astronomers, philosophers—serious men, the scholars and intellectuals of their time. They acted on the basis of a prophecy found in the twenty-fourth chapter of Numbers, concerning the star that would appear specifically in Judea when the King had been born. That is why they went and asked, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” They did not ask where He would be born.

“He has already been born. Where is He who has been born?” And how do you know that a king has been born in Judea? “We saw His star in the East.” Why would you have to travel from the East? These were good and willing men, who themselves had to learn and then teach others to come. But if they were to set out from there, where would they go into the unknown? They had the stars, coordinates, and maps. “Where will they find You?” “Why should that concern you? I shall help them, provided that they are willing.” So they journeyed for about two years. After two years they arrived and found Christ, not in the manger but in a house—“in the house.” That is why the children two years old and younger were slaughtered, according to the time that Herod had carefully determined from the Magi. When Herod heard about a king, he asked, “When? When did the star appear?”

He secretly summoned the Magi, the text says, and “determined from them the time when the star appeared.” Read the texts and see for yourselves. That evil man wanted to calculate how many children he would slaughter, and from what age downward, so that Christ would be included and removed from his path. Afterward, he gave the order for all the children two years old and younger to be slain, according to the time he had carefully determined from the Magi.

Read Matthew and these passages, and you will see how the matter stands.

These distinguished, educated, intellectual men carried gold, frankincense, and myrrh in their treasuries—gifts of profound significance—and they offered them to a two-year-old Child. What did they see? The text says that they fell down and worshiped Him; they opened their treasures and offered Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They worshiped Him as King and acknowledged Him as King. But where could they see His kingship?

That is the point. So if anyone ever asks you to demonstrate what faith is, show him the faith of the Magi. These three learned men worshiped an infant as God, as one destined for sacrifice and death, and as King, for that is what their gifts signify. God has dealings both with simple people and with the highly educated. He revealed Himself to both groups; neither group discovered Him by its own power. Even today, though we live within Christianity and within this Mystery, we may still know nothing at all about Christianity. This is because Christ sees something within us that hinders Him, and so He does not reveal Himself. Many people who later enter Christianity wonder and say, “Where was I all this time?”

“I searched everywhere; there was nowhere I did not look. What did I not do, and what did I not learn? Were all these things hidden from me?” They were all around you, but you did not have the proper receiver. Is not the space around us at this very moment full of music, speech, and broadcasts? Yet we need a special device to receive them and even to isolate the particular station we wish to hear. In the same way, people may have everything except this receiver. Christ is always transmitting. He has placed the conscience within us, crying out to man; that is a transmission from God. His law speaks, and nature speaks. All these things declare the glory of God. Everything speaks, but our receiver is broken. “I do not want Him sending me anything; I do not want Him speaking to me.”

The only One we do not want and do not permit to speak to us is God. We do not want Him. And because His word reproves our lawless way of life—whether carnal or worldly—we shut Him out and refuse to hear a word from Him. This last response has become common: “Do not tell me; do not tell me.” A person does not want to hear it. He does not want to face the truth as it really is. This account contains many lessons. So where, I ask, shall we find the newborn Christ? These are the historical circumstances: He was found in Bethlehem and was born in Bethlehem, and so forth. There is something else as well. Some people say that God turned the mind of Caesar Augustus—or rather, caused him—to issue the decree for the census, so that Mary and Joseph would go up to Bethlehem and the prophecy would be fulfilled.

The prophecy of Micah said, “But you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means the least,” and so forth. None of that is so; such claims are false and absurd. “You, Caesar, do your work, and I shall do Mine.” In His perfect wisdom, God saw beforehand that, at the time His Son would be born, Caesar would have issued the decree and Mary would be in Bethlehem. So He said, “Write, Micah: He will be born in Bethlehem.” Let Caesar do his work, and I shall do Mine. Had God seen that she would be in Nazareth, He would have said, “Write: He will be born in Nazareth.” Had He seen that she would be in Jerusalem, He would have said, “Write: He will be born in Jerusalem.” Human beings do their work, and God does His own. He does not coerce or command anyone. It is not that He lacks the power—He certainly has it—but He does not violate the freedom of the human person.

So, this is an event whose deeper meaning remains hidden from most people. Of course, we know certain things from school, but we do not know the details and all that follows from them. In any case, let us stop here, and let us pray that this year’s Christmas may be truly spiritual, in the fullest sense of the word. Amen.

Το θεωρούσε αμαρτία αυτό. «Ιωσήφ δε ο ανήρ αυτής, δίκαιος ων και μη θέλων αυτήν παραδειγματίσαι, εβουλήθη λάθρα απολύσαι αυτήν». Να τη σκεπάσει δεν μπορούσε, να τη σκεπάσει. Να τη δώσει και να πει: «Κύριε, εγώ δεν έχω σχέση μαζί της»; Κανονιζόταν για λιθοβολισμό μια μοιχαλίδα. Όταν κυκλοφορούσε γυναίκα έγκυος έξω χωρίς άντρα, ελιθοβολείτο από τον νόμο. Γι’ αυτό και της έδωσε τον Ιωσήφ ως προστάτη, για να μην τη λιθοβολήσουνε. Αυτός είπε: «Θα τη διώξω κάπου μακριά. Αν την ανακαλύψουν, την ανακάλυψαν. Αν τη γλιτώσει, τη γλίτωσε. Εγώ μέσα στο σπίτι, όμως, δεν μπορώ να την κρατήσω, γιατί ο Θεός μού απαγορεύει να σκεπάσω την πορνεία». Αυτό είναι ένα μάθημα πολύ χρήσιμο για τις ημέρες μας. Έχετε τη γνώμη, αν υπήρχε πνεύμα τέτοιο του Ιωσήφ σήμερα, θα υπήρχε αυτή η πορνεία και η μοιχεία που υπάρχει σήμερα;

Τα καλύπτουν, ψέματα και λοιπά στον πατέρα, στον γονιό και λοιπά. «Εδώ ήταν η Κατίνα, εκεί ήταν ο Προκόπης», και αυτή πετάει και το παιδί στο νοσοκομείο. Αυτό είναι μεγάλο μάθημα, το οποίο δεν πρέπει να περάσει απαρατήρητο, τουλάχιστον αυτές τις μέρες. Αυτό πάει να πει: «Δίκαιος ων, δεν μπορώ να σε κρατήσω, όμως δεν θέλω και να σε διαπομπεύσω, γιατί την άλλη ώρα θα σε λιθοβολήσουν. Αν σε διαπομπεύσω εγώ... Θα σε διώξω μακριά, λάθρα, κρυφά, και έτσι ούτε κάτι». Εν πάση περιπτώσει. Έτσι σκέφτεται σαν άνθρωπος ο δίκαιος Ιωσήφ. Ο Θεός βλέπει από πάνω την πάλη που κάνει ο άνθρωπος. Η αλήθεια δεν είναι αυτή, η κόρη δεν πρέπει να λιθοβοληθεί, και στέλνει τον άγγελο και είπε εκείνα τα ωραία. Λέει: «Πρόσεξε, υιός Δαβίδ». Δεν είναι γιος του Δαβίδ, είναι απόγονος του Δαβίδ. Και εδώ θα ήθελα να προσέξετε τις λέξεις: «Μη φοβηθής παραλαβείν Μαριάμ την γυναίκα σου». Λένε οι Προτεστάντες στον χώρο: «Δεν βλέπεις που τη λέει γυναίκα του;» Μα και υιό Δαβίδ τον λέει. Είναι γιος του Δαβίδ;

Έπρεπε να τύχουν κάποιας περιποιήσεως, κάποια κυρία να κατέβει από το κρεβάτι, κάποια δεσποινίς και λοιπά. Κάποιο στενό δωμάτιο θα μπορούσαν τουλάχιστον για την κόρη αυτή που ήταν σε ενδιαφέρουσα. Αλλά η σκληρότητα ήταν τέτοια των ανθρώπων τότε, όπως είναι και σήμερα. Μήπως σήμερα, αν γεννηθεί ο Χριστός, θα βρει φάτνη να γεννηθεί σήμερα ο Χριστός;

Κάποτε ο Σαμουήλ, ο Θεός δηλαδή, καλεί από τα χωράφια της Βηθλεέμ τον Δαβίδ, αυτόν ο οποίος θα έρθει να δανείσει στον Θεό σάρκα, να γεννηθεί στον κόσμο. Και έρχεται τώρα στα ίδια χωράφια η πληροφορία. Ε, ο παππούς σας που έφυγε από εδώ, έφυγε για έναν σκοπό. Αυτός πραγματοποιήθηκε αυτό το βράδυ. Και γίνεται όλος αυτός ο κύκλος και γίνεται η συνάντηση πάλι στα χωράφια της Βηθλεέμ. Εγεννήθηκε αυτός από σας. Και γίνεται η χαρά μεταξύ ουρανού και γης. «Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη, ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκία», στους οποίους ευδόκησε ο Θεός και διά αγάπης στους ανθρώπους. Τώρα, θα πει κανείς, ο Θεός είναι με τους πτωχούς τῷ πνεύματι; Δεν ήταν τόσος άλλος κόσμος;

Αυτοί οι επίσημοι, οι μορφωμένοι, οι διανοούμενοι άνθρωποι έχουν στους θησαυρούς τους χρυσόν, λίβανον και σμύρναν, πράγματα σοβαρά, και τα προσφέρουν σε ένα παιδάκι δυο ετών. Τι βλέπετε; Έπεσαν, λέει, και προσκύνησαν και άνοιξαν τους θησαυρούς αυτών και προσέφεραν χρυσόν, λίβανον και σμύρναν. Προσκυνάνε για βασιλέα, Τον παραδέχονται για βασιλέα. Πού τη βλέπουν τη βασιλεία;
