Summary

Every human encounter occurs through Divine Providence rather than chance, because God guides people toward what benefits their souls. Repentance, rather than sinlessness, is decisive for salvation, as Adam’s downfall was compounded by refusing responsibility and remaining unrepentant. Spiritual safety is found through organic participation in the Church, where believers receive Christ’s strength through Baptism, Holy Communion, and life within His Body.

God arranged for us to meet here, even though you did not know me and I did not know you. But the One who knows us both—the Lord—has brought us together. He is the Director, the One who presses the buttons and brings people together for their common good. Many people call such things luck or coincidences. We often hear them say, “It happened by chance; it was a coincidence.” There are no such things. It is the providence of God, which

seeks to make known to each person what he needs, so that he, in turn, may put it into practice and be benefited by his passage through this world. Nothing happens by chance. Everything depends upon the Creator, the Sustainer, and, beyond that, the Giver of Life. We did not come to earth by chance; we are not here by chance; nor did we meet by chance. The Person who unites us is invisible, and I am deeply saddened because so many people—good people, good souls—

know nothing about this Person. And when someone does not know his Creator, does not know his Redeemer, does not know the One who loves him day and night, he loses so much. He suffers in this world because he does not know where to turn. Something is missing.

Just as the body feels unwell in a place where there is very little oxygen, so the human soul feels unwell in a place where there is little Christ—or no Christ at all.

If a person knew Christ and wanted to bring Him into his life, things would be different, and life would be joyful. But he knows neither Christ nor his own soul. He knows many other things. Man has become estranged from his own soul and from his God. He tries to involve himself in everything else and control it all—if possible, at the press of a button. Everything except his soul and his God. About these two he knows very little. He sees only the body and imagines that he is nothing but flesh, that there is nothing else. He cannot see his soul,

either outside his flesh or within it, and so, we might say, he loads everything onto one side. And when everything is loaded onto one side, sooner or later the whole vessel of his life is bound to capsize. Most of us left our homeland and came here in pursuit of material goods. We did not come for Christ; we did not come for our souls. We came for our bodies, while forgetting our souls. That was not good. Yet Christ, in His love, wants to make His existence known to us, because this is for our benefit. That is why, as you see, He creates the right conditions for us to gather together, to have a Church nearby, to have a priest,

and to have so many other things, so that we may also attend to the needs of the soul. For no matter how successful a person may be materially, if he fails spiritually, he is the most wretched person in the world. It would have been better for him not to have been born. A person’s birth is normally a cause for joy; yet what was said of Judas still stands: “It would have been better for him if he had not been born.” A few years ago, back in our homeland, an oil company ran an advertisement for a kind of oil used in automobile engines.

Apparently, this oil was especially good for engines, and the caption beneath the advertisement read, “Put a tiger in your engine.” When I read it, it made a great impression on me. I took it as a metaphor and applied it elsewhere. I said, “That sounds impressive. You put a tiger in your engine and have a powerful engine—but whom will you put behind the wheel?” Putting a tiger in your engine does not guarantee your safety. You also need someone sensible behind the wheel. And so it is with man. By acquiring money, he may put a tiger in his engine.

But who will be the sensible driver? Your soul. It must govern all these things, so that they do not become the cause of evil and destruction for you—often even the loss of this fleeting earthly life. I once read about five people who won the lottery. Within a month, not one of them was still alive. One used the money to take a trip and died in an airplane crash. Another bought a streamlined sports car, and they pulled his body from a river. Because of that money, all five lost even this temporal life, to say nothing of eternity. So I would now like to ask both myself and you: How do you see this matter?

Do you see only your material concerns, or do you also discern the spiritual side? It may be easy for a person to acquire something, but it is difficult to preserve it. An elder once told me, “Dimitri, to acquire something, you need a school-leaving grade of ‘very good’; but to preserve it, you need a grade of ‘excellent.’” And that is true. Whatever we may gain in this world, I do not know how much of it we will be able to preserve in the world to come, or whether we can export any of it there at all. For Christ said, “Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.” But He indicated that Martha’s portion would remain here.

This is something that ought to concern a person, if he believes that he has a soul and that he is not merely temporary, but eternal. He is temporary here, but eternal there. And this temporal life, which in this world is like a vapor, has consequences in the world to come. A person therefore needs wisdom. He needs to gather his thoughts and consider: Where did I come from? Why did I come? And where am I going? If these three questions remain unanswered—or if he does not even care about them—then I return to what I said before: there was no need for him to come at all. Nature has no need of one human being, or even of millions. Nor have millions of people gained anything merely by coming into this world, if they depart tomorrow morning and take nothing with them. I am not saying that we should give everything up or cease working. I am saying that we must also care for our souls. The hardest work of all is for a person to labor for his own soul.

In every other matter, perhaps he will find the devil acting as his advocate. But when it concerns his soul, he will find the devil standing against him. Only then, from the difficulties he encounters in spiritual matters, will he understand that what he is striving to do is good, eternal, and able to endure beyond the grave.

So, if you want your life to be somewhat calmer, more peaceful, and more secure, and if you want to make use of this temporal life for eternity, you must come to know the One who brought you here. The One who brought us here is God. He—He brought us here. By the power of His law, we were born of our father and mother; and they, by the power of His law, were born of their father and mother. If we continue tracing the generations backward, we will find God blessing the first married couple and saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and have dominion over the earth.” Therefore, Someone stands behind our existence. Yet people do not know this Someone. And most recently, two thousand years ago,

He even came into the world as man, to help humanity return to the place for which He had created it from the foundation of the world, but from which it was driven out because of sin and because our first parents remained unrepentant. For I want you to understand that Adam was not expelled from Paradise simply because he sinned. In the same way, we will not be condemned to Hell because we sinned, but because we did not repent, even though we were given the opportunity for metanoia—repentance—and refused it. The same thing happened to Adam. Although he was given the opportunity, he remained unrepentant in his sins. He made fig leaves and hid himself, but he did not repent. He shifted the blame, saying that everyone else was at fault: Eve was at fault, God was at fault, but he himself was not. And these are the consequences. So there are some people who do not know Christ.

Satan creates situations in a person’s life and entangles him—even the very best of people. And why does he entangle him? Because, although the person is good, he has no guide; he does not have Christ. Christ is the One who untangles and clarifies everything. Some people face situations like the Gordian knot. All their affairs are tangled—their psychological, physical, family, social, ecclesiastical, and wider circumstances—and no one can resolve them. Faced with all this, a person finds it difficult to go on and considers himself miserable. He clashes with those around him, like many cars colliding on a slippery road, and he blames the people beside him. But that is not the real cause. Christ is missing. When Christ is present,

the light comes on, and the cockroaches and little mice flee of their own accord. Whenever you see troubled situations arising around you—at work, in your home, or more generally in social or ecclesiastical matters—know that the Master is missing; Christ is missing. So call upon Him. I remember a story I once read about a bachelor—or a “bekiaris,” as we used to say, though perhaps the younger ones among you may know the word. In other words, he lived alone. He was unmarried and had no one. He worked and took care of himself entirely on his own. He never went to Church. His excuse was that holidays—Sundays and great feast days—had to be used for washing, ironing,

sweeping, and taking care of his home; and even then, he could never finish everything. One Sunday morning, there was a knock at the door. It was a gentle knock, but he understood that Christ Himself was standing outside. He was terrified and completely flustered. He had to open the door at all costs, because the way Christ was knocking seemed almost like a command to let Him in. But the bed was unmade. He went to gather up the sheet and spread it properly, but instead he only became more confused. He tried to put a pillow in its place, and it fell on the floor. He tried to hang up a towel, and it slipped off its hook. Instead of putting things in order, he made everything worse. Again came the knock: “Tap, tap, tap.” “Coming, coming!”

What was he to do? He tried to change out of his pajamas, but ended up putting on trousers while still half-dressed in them. He tried to put on his tie, but managed to turn his shirt around backward. He could do nothing properly. For quite some time, Christ continued to knock gently. Then, all at once, the door opened by itself, and Christ entered with a solemn expression. The moment Christ came in, the pillow returned to its place, the towel hung itself up, the sheets arranged themselves neatly on the mattress, the bolster went where it belonged, the slippers slid underneath, and everything became beautiful and orderly. “Why did you not open the door,” Christ asked him, “when I had been knocking for so long?” He replied, “Lord, I wanted to put things in order first.” “Then why did you not put them in order?” “Well,” he said, “I tried to do it by myself, and it nearly killed me.”

The man said, “Why would nothing go into its proper place, while now, in Your presence, everything has gone where it belongs?” Christ replied, “Do you see that I, too, can be useful? Yet you never come to Me and ask Me to put things in order for you.” This was an indirect way of telling him, “You need Me as well. Do not imagine that by your own strength and cleverness you can arrange everything as it ought to be and as is truly beneficial for man.” We have placed Christ high up on the icon shelf. We even light a little oil lamp for Him so that He can see and will not fall, and we offer Him incense up there as well. “Sit up there; You have nothing else to do. We will manage everything ourselves.” But how can man manage it all? What can he possibly manage? There are so many cares, so many schemes of the devil, so many troubles that can be created in Christ’s absence by Satan, by our ego,

by our empty ambition, often by self-interest, by worldliness, and by so many other things that drive us mad, as we say. How can you cope with it all? Only Christ can. And when a person has tangled the thread of his life, he must take care to call upon Christ to untangle it. No one else can untangle the thread of human life, whether the problem is personal, familial, or more general. Christ alone can resolve even the most difficult things. Many people sometimes say, “With things as they are now, can anything be done? We must break up the home. The husband and wife must separate. We must dissolve the association. We must demolish the church. We have to, we have to—things have reached such a point that they cannot be put right.” No.

Those conclusions come from human weakness; they do not come from Christ. Christ is the One who can bring life out of death. He can bring life even out of Hades—who could ever have imagined it? Not even Satan himself could grasp this. “He seized what he could see,” says John Chrysostom. “He seized a man, encountered God, and was struck down by what he could not see.” That is how it is, and that is what always happens. Let me recall one example to help you, because you will often find yourselves in situations like these. Some years ago, I was giving a talk in Athens, in the Gouva district, at the Church of Saint Artemios, if you know it. When I finished speaking that evening, I set out on foot for Pangrati. I was staying on Formionos Street, so I took Filolaou Street and walked. A young woman, about thirty years old, approached me.

She began telling me, “What you said tonight, Mr. Panagopoulos, was meant for me.” I had been speaking about the power of God and Divine Providence: when we have tangled the thread of our life, we should not simply lose heart, but ask the power of God to intervene. Then He will take matters into His own hands. Indeed, He rejoices when we entrust our affairs to Him, both personal and more general ones. He rejoices in taking on such difficult situations. “But my case is unusual,” she told me. “What does ‘unusual’ mean before Christ? Are there cases that Christ cannot handle?” “No, it is impossible for me to tell you,” she said. “I do not want you to tell me anything. You heard what I said. I do not want to know

your personal affairs. Do not expose yourself before me. You may see me again tomorrow and feel ashamed. I do not want you to tell me about your situation; keep it to yourself. I want to tell you only one thing: go home, and in your prayer tonight, do not say the same things you have been saying until now. Concerning your problem, say this. Pray: ‘My Christ, I heard Panagopoulos say that every problem can be resolved by You.

I have this problem, which You know. I am trapped between a precipice ahead and a raging stream behind; there is no way out. Take it into Your hands.’ That much you can say to Him.” “But it is impossible,” she told me. “My dear, just say it. Who else are you going to tell?” She would not say it. She began to cry.

As we drew near my neighborhood, she began to cry. I said, “Whether you cry or not, my answer is still the same.” She had walked with me for about half an hour. She began crying because there was a conflict within her. I was urging her to pray in this way, but her reason could not accept it. Since she could see no solution by her own reasoning, she kept saying, “This cannot be done.” “All right, then, let me tell you,” she said. “I do not want you to tell me. I do not want to hear what is happening to you. Keep it to yourself; let the Lord know it. Do not discuss these things; do not go around discussing your falls.” So I left her and went on, because I had reached the edge of my neighborhood. People would see Panagopoulos at night with a young woman beside him, weeping. “What is Panagopoulos doing at this hour?” What a sight it must have been: the Gospel on one side and floods of tears on the other. What was happening here? The following Wednesday—not by chance, of course. The truth is that when I went home that night and said my prayers, I prayed, “My Lord, You know. You were crucified for this child. Take her situation into Your hands. What do I know?

You can do all things. I want to do whatever You think best.” So the following Wednesday I went back. I remembered nothing about it, nor did I look through the congregation in the Church to see who was there and who was not. When I finished, there she was again, coming up behind me. “We have news.” “So that is how it is? Good evening.” “Good evening, Mr. Panagopoulos. You know,” she said, “a miracle happened.” “Give glory to God,” I said. “Let me tell you,” she said. “Do not tell me anything. I believe in miracles. If I did not believe in the almighty power of our Christ and in miracles, I would not have urged you and commended to you this Wonderworker, whom you do not yet know.” “But let me tell you.” She wanted to tell me how the miracle had happened. “I do not want to hear anything.” She followed me a little farther; then I left her and she went away. I lost all contact with that young woman.

A long time passed—seven or eight years. Once, a married couple who were friends invited my wife and me to their home in Faliro for a meal. After we ate lunch, they took us out into a beautiful flower garden they had. The wife said to me, “Come here, Dimitri. I want to tell you something that will interest you.” “If it interests me,” I said, “let me hear it.” “I am going to tell you something you will surely be curious to learn.” “Let me hear it,” I said. She said, “Do you remember an incident seven years ago at Saint Artemios?” “I do not remember.” “There was a young woman who lived near you, and so on, and you told her such and such.” “That I remember.” “Well, do you know what was happening?” she asked. “I do not want to know,” I told her. I had not even allowed the young woman herself to tell me.

“But you must know,” she said. “Very well, I do not want to know.” “You will burst if you keep it inside,” I said. “But I do not want to know.” In the end, she insisted. “You must know.” “Then tell me. Go on, let me hear it.” The young woman was separated from her husband. She had a sister and brother-in-law who lived in the family home, which stood in a shared courtyard. They had rented a room there to a chauffeur, and the young woman was sinning with him. When she heard my sermons, she came to herself. But how could she end that sinful relationship when he was blackmailing her, threatening to reveal it to her family and so forth?

She could not make him leave. He was protected by rent control, paying fifty drachmas for the room. Nor would he leave of his own accord. He was a rough chauffeur, a worldly man; how could anyone frighten him into leaving? So nothing could be done. Yet when she prayed that night, the miracle came the next morning. In the morning he drove out and took Vouliagmenis Avenue toward Athens. He reached the Columns of Olympian Zeus. As he came to the Columns of Olympian Zeus, another car came from Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, and the two cars collided head-on like rams and were both thrown into the air. He was terrified because the accident was his fault. He jumped out and fled before the traffic police could arrive and catch him, and he vanished from the face of the earth. He never returned to collect his...

bed, nor did he return for his suitcase—nothing. He vanished from the face of the earth. She was delivered, and she rented the room at the current rate; instead of fifty drachmas, she was then receiving seven hundred and fifty. This is God; this is Christ. But who entrusts himself to Christ? Who calls Christ into his work, his affairs, or, more generally, into the churches and the affairs of society? Who does? Those who govern? Those who lead the Church? Those who lead the family? Sadly, the only One who is everywhere present is everywhere absent from our lives. The God who is everywhere present is everywhere absent. What I am telling you may sound strange, yet this is how it is. That is why I would say to you: pay heed to Him.

This almighty God takes every matter into His hands. Yet there is one small detail here. What is that detail? It is this: He does not take on every matter indiscriminately. He has one particular requirement. He wants the person who asks for something to ask first for himself, and only then for others. There is something wrong among Christians. Christians learn something good and tell others to put it into practice, but they do not practice it themselves. Christians are very generous—with advice. They hear something good tonight and will tell it to others, but they themselves will not put it into practice.

They advise little Katina and the young people to do it, but they do not do it themselves. They tell their child to pray, but they do not pray. They tell their child to fast, but they do not fast. They tell their child to go and pray, but they themselves do not pray. And so on: they tell the child to attend Church, and the same thing happens in other matters. When a person first sets his own life in order with Christ, then he can come before Him and ask on behalf of others. Then the saying of James, the brother of the Lord, applies: “The effective prayer of a righteous man has great power.” Such a prayer reaches God; the person has boldness before Him and can help others more broadly. The prayer of a righteous man is, as we might say, a magic key—provided, of course, that the other person is also willing to listen.

If the other person is unwilling to listen, God still does not force him. That is why Scripture says “effective.” If the prayer remains inactive, nothing happens. Even our Christ prayed, yet Peter fell; His prayer did not prevent Peter’s fall. Christ hears the prayers of sinners when they pray for themselves: “My Christ, be patient with me until I put my life right. My Christ, help me. Find me a spiritual father. My Christ, send me somewhere there is a Church; send me somewhere there is a school; send me somewhere I can find work and face fewer temptations, so that my soul will not be lost and my family will not be lost.” Then Christ helps that person, even though he is a sinner, because he is asking for things that will not make his life worse but will, in some way, make it better. But when he asks for things concerning someone else, his family, people beyond his household, or broader matters...

concerning the Church, the state, and so forth, that person’s prayer is not heard. It is like someone offering memorial services for others when he himself is in need of a memorial service. It is as the man who had formerly been blind says: “God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.” Not merely someone who claims to worship God. So if today the prayers of parents cannot keep up with their children and protect them...

if the prayers of the clergy cannot prevent Christians from falling or set them right, and so forth, this is because we who pray do not have boldness before God, or because those for whom we pray are not yet willing to receive His help. A person must therefore attend first to his own personal affairs. Christ rejoices to hear a person confess his sins and weaknesses. A person should not fear Christ; he should fear the devil. Yet we fear Christ, thinking that He may send us to Hell, while we do not fear Satan, who will lead us to Hell. When Christ sees that we fear Satan and his power over us, He helps us escape from his hands. But when He does not see this awareness in us, He does not help us.

In order to remain safe, a person must understand that he cannot remain safe alone, but above all as part of the whole community. Our Christ led human beings and worked out their salvation within His Church. All who came to know Christ were added to the Church of Christ. If you read the Acts of the Apostles, you will see that each person who believed in Christ was added to the Church day by day. Indeed, in the first Church, people returned by the thousands. Entire families, together with their little children—all of them returned to the Church. They were baptized at once and began to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. In other words, each person was now joined organically...

to the Body whose head is Christ—the Body called Christ, called the Church. Once a person no longer remains outside and far away, but is joined to the Church, grows within her, and draws strength from the Body of Christ, Christ has a great shepherd’s staff, so to speak, for He is the true Shepherd, and He does not allow Satan to trouble that person.

He protects him and creates a state of spiritual security. But whoever distances himself from Christ because he finds fault with this thing and is offended by that one, wanting to find an environment suited to his own preferences, will be lost. The time Noah’s family spent in the Ark gives us a beautiful lesson.

It is an answer to those who are overly selective and always blame their surroundings. “What goes on in the Church? Do you know what the priests do? Do you know what the bishops do? Do you know what the parish council members do? Do you know, do you know, do you know?” And so they remain outside the Church. But Noah did not act that way, nor did Noah’s wife, nor Shem, Ham, or Japheth, nor their three wives.

They remained amid the stench, amid the crocodiles, amid the filth of the bulls and oxen. They stayed there for six months. Do you imagine they had pressurized hoses inside to clean the Ark? Or do you imagine it had plumbing, cleaning products, and air fresheners to perfume it?

They heard the roaring of the wild beasts, the cries of the animals in there. Yet they did not leave; they did not break away. For Satan draws us outside, supposedly to find something better, so long as he can only get us out of there. But they remained there and were saved, though they suffered. If one bears in mind that outside the Ark there is a flood, and that anyone who goes outside will drown, then no matter how wise a person may be...

If someone could be transported in spirit to that Ark, which at that time was a type, a foreshadowing, of the Church, and could see how they were saved and how they lived, he would find many wise minds outside. He would find many skills and many sciences. He might even find people of God out there, as we would call them, but each following his own way. Yet they could not attain to the faith...

and the humility of Noah, so as to enter the Ark. Even the craftsmen, the builders themselves, drowned, as we were saying elsewhere the other evening. They are like those who make donations to churches, who promise icons as offerings and make chandeliers, yet never enter the Church themselves, never live the life of the Mysteries of the Church, and never receive nourishment from within her. What good is it if they do all these things and adorn Christ’s Ark today with gold, when they themselves do not enter it to find safety and nourishment? Many will still say, ‘Glory to God, I am inside the Ark. I go to Church.’ But are you nourished by the Ark? For when God commanded them to enter, He had first commanded them to place food inside, in due measure for the animals, the birds, and the people; and they were nourished by it.

If those inside the Ark had not been fed, there would have been dead bodies inside the Ark. And what difference would there be between the dead inside the Ark and the dead outside it? Both would be dead. When the Ark reached Ararat, they too would have had to be taken out and cast away, since God had not commanded them to open the hatch and throw the filth out through it. Yet they survived for six months, because the flood prevailed for six months. When the six months had passed, the Ark came to rest on Ararat. If they had not been nourished from what Noah had stored within—and today Noah is the priest in the Church, in the Ark; the parish is the Ark, the priest is Noah, and we are the wild beasts—if they had not been nourished by what he provided, what would we have had? We would have had the dead inside and the dead outside. In other words, we would have had...

as the parable of the Prodigal Son expresses so beautifully, the living dead. Do you know how many of us are walking cemeteries? We have a name that says we are alive, yet we are dead, because we have no relationship with Christ. We have no relationship with the Mysteries or with the Church. The priest comes out and says, ‘With the fear of God,’ and we, who have no fear of God, bring forward one, two, or three little children—perhaps ten of them. The little lamb comes forward to receive Holy Communion, but the mother does not, because she has killed her other children through abortion or because she prevents other children from being conceived. Her conscience accuses her, and she does not approach to receive Holy Communion. How can she live within the Ark if she is not nourished by the Ark? These are fundamental matters, and this is where they lead us: we must have the Ark, enter the Ark, and be nourished by the Ark. There is no other way. By our own way, we may have natural, bodily life.

The animals and the birds have that as well. But we will not have spiritual life. The human being is, above all, spiritual. Just as the body is nourished, so too is the spirit. And just as there is a material table for the body—and during these days that I have been here, I have seen a richly laden table—you open one freezer and I do not know what is inside; you open the refrigerator and do not know what to reach for first.

In the morning, you have so much that you do not know what to eat first for this body. But the spirit receives the antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, on Sunday—and often you do not even eat that, because you had already broken the fast by eating breakfast, so you save it for another day. What is this hungry, immortal little soul to do? How will it be nourished—on air? It too has its own table.

There is a spiritual table and a material table. The material one is richly supplied, and we devour from it day and night. There is material bread and spiritual bread. There is spiritual fire and material fire, and there is what is material and what is spiritual for the body. For the material body, there is the table, the oven, the freezers, the refrigerators, and the markets—agreed. For the spiritual person, there is the spiritual table: the Holy Altar. The Holy Spirit descends and changes the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood. Then the human person is called to eat of this and drink of this, to be united with Christ, and to become one body and one blood with God. But this does not happen. There may be a thousand people in the Church, and scarcely two or three elderly women and five or ten little children come forward to receive Holy Communion—children who may only have been baptized yesterday, and so forth. Everywhere else there is drought; their souls are empty.

They take the antidoron in their hands and shake the crumbs onto their heads, as though a blessing will fall upon them from there. What great honor they show to the offering! Yet still less have they received the Gift itself, Holy Communion. How can they possibly be nourished? This is what the existence of the Ark and man’s participation in it remind us of. This Ark, which today is called the Church and which had its type, its foreshadowing, in Noah’s Ark, needs its Noah, the priest. Just as an inn needs an innkeeper, so the Church needs the priest, who undertakes the care and healing of the human soul after it has fallen among robbers throughout the week. And the robbers are the demons, who wound a person in word, in deed, or in thought. These are fundamental matters. Thank you.

Satan knows that the human being is fundamentally spiritual, and that it is through the spirit that the body is preserved. For if the spirit is separated from the body, the body becomes nothing but a heap of bones to be eaten by worms. It is the soul that sustains the body. That is why Satan attacks these Arks, these churches, and the clergy, because he knows where a blow will hurt and where harm can be done. Therefore, with our eyes open, we must be of one mind, asking Christ to help us establish, build, and obtain such Arks, so that we may enter them, be nourished within them, and not fear the flood outside. One day the curtain will fall for all of us. One day, at a time we do not expect, we will rise and...

we will go somewhere we do not wish to go. Yet even then we will not be afraid. This is a train of thought that everyone needs to understand. Nevertheless, I repeat, we take care to put a tiger in the engine, while failing to place a prudent driver at the wheel—and that driver is the human soul.

Christ still continues to wait for us with great longsuffering. I want to tell you one thing: Christ is not defiled by our sins. Nor is Christ daunted by our sins. What prevents Christ from taking charge of our affairs—our personal affairs, our family affairs, and every other concern—is the human ego.

And He begins precisely there. You will have heard the words. He says:

‘If anyone desires to come after Me.’ If anyone desires—He forces no one, although He created everything for man and sacrificed Himself for man. Even so, He does not compel the human person. Man’s free will is sovereign throughout this present age; human free will is sovereign. Indeed, a Father says somewhere, ‘He who created you without you cannot save you without you.’ That is, He who made you without first asking you will not save you without asking you. Man has free will. If he wishes, he accepts God; if he wishes, he blasphemes God, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Mother, and everything sacred. No one strikes him down, and this little man imagines himself almighty because God does not cut out his tongue, put out his eyes, or cut off his ears. And so he thinks himself almighty.

This is the reason: we live in the age of grace, and God’s justice is not acting here and now. If God’s justice were acting and giving each person his rightful recompense—if the words David spoke from the beginning were applied, ‘If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?’—that is, if You were to reckon everything against us to the letter, who could stand before You? This is not being applied today. As you have seen, there is also an axe at the feet of the Honorable Forerunner. That represents the justice of God. It is not the axe that cut off the Forerunner’s head, though ignorant iconographers paint it with blood on its blade. It is the justice of God, which will one day come to cut down and clear away the unfruitful person. Today, then, God’s justice is not acting, and some people imagine either that it does not exist or that it has no power. But it does exist...

and it does have power. Yet God waits for man and says, ‘I have prepared everything.’ So what does He require? I say, ‘I am willing.’ Are you willing? Then come behind Me. This is where things go wrong. Christ does not want man beside Him or ahead of Him. Who are you to tell Me that you will go ahead of Me? Come behind Me. Do not stand beside Me so that we can discuss the matter either. Some people say, ‘It is open to discussion. In my opinion, I imagine...’ Who are you to have your opinions, and who are you to imagine? Your coins are counterfeit; they will not pass in God’s treasury. Are you willing? Come behind Me. Do not try to be clever with Me, because you do not know what to tell Me. Nor are we going to debate it. Christ has no need of advice. That is why some people act most wrongly.

They presume to advise and alter the Church of Christ, ‘which He purchased with His own blood,’ as Paul says. Christ established her beginning in the Upper Room, and she alone is the Orthodox Church, for no other has that history. All the others lead back to the arms of human founders—whether he is called the Pope, Luther, Calvin, Buddha, Zoroaster, or whatever else. Only Christ’s Church, the Orthodox Church, reaches back to the Upper Room; only she can stand and be the fruit of the grace of the Holy Spirit. So the person says, ‘Lord, I surrender myself to You.’ Then go; come behind Me. It is to your benefit to come behind Me, because there are so many hardships in the world that you will struggle to pass through them. At some time you may have been on a bus, especially one where...

the exit is at the front, as in our country. As soon as we board at the back and the conductor gives us our ticket, we hear him say, ‘Exit at the front.’ Good heavens! All the seats are full, the aisle is packed, and people are hanging on wherever they can. How are you supposed to make your way through that crowd and get out at the front? So you ask the person ahead of you, ‘Are you getting off, sir? Are you getting off?’ You do not try to force your way through. He says, ‘Yes.’ The moment he says yes, you are at peace: he will go ahead, and I will follow behind him and make my way out. That is Christ. Put Christ before you. There is no room for clever evasions in Christianity. Christ tells you to fast on Wednesday and Friday; then fast, and leave the clever arguments aside. Christ tells you to have one, two, three, or five children; then have them, and leave aside your cleverness, your reasoning, and all the rest. Such things have no place before Christ.

He tells you to go to Church, and only if your house is on fire on all four sides and you cannot get up will you be excused from going. Go to Church, and die inside the Church, but do not ask why. Do this. Put Christ before you. Do not tell Christ what to do.

He has arranged everything, measured everything, and given it in such a way that man can accomplish it. Of course, a person often encounters difficulties and says, ‘Ah, this is impossible.’ That is not true. It is not impossible; it is difficult. It is not impossible; it is difficult. Something that can be powered by electricity cannot be powered by oil. That is true. So go to a house that has electricity. If you want an elevator and electric stoves and all these things, go where there is electricity. That electricity is Christ. Christ is the power.

The grace of the Holy Spirit is in the Church. The moment you are baptized, the moment you confess your sins and allow grace to enter you, the moment you receive Holy Communion from Christ Himself—there you have the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Do you hear? Have you heard the secret prayer that the priest says during the consecration? “So that, for those who partake, they may be for nepsis, the watchfulness of the soul, for the forgiveness of sins, and for communion with the Holy Spirit.” These things come through Holy Communion. They do not come through herbal remedies, as the herbalists here say. They come through Holy Communion. It is Divine Communion—that is, communion with God. According to Basil the Great, the person who receives Holy Communion receives twenty-three gifts, while the person who does not partake is deprived of those twenty-three gifts. Therefore, I say, a person must understand these things, feel them, and long for them deeply.

Let everything in your life depend upon Christ. Make use of the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother. She is a member of His own family; she carried Him in her womb for nine months. Last night someone asked me, “How can she be called the All-Holy and not simply Mary?” Why should she be called only Mary? Is she not the Most Holy Theotokos? Did she not carry the All-Holy God within her for nine months? What, then, did this woman become? Did she remain merely an ordinary human being? How did she carry God within her? You take the Precious Wood, the Cross—what is it? Is it not the Precious Wood, since it was drenched in the Precious Blood of God? What kind of wood is this?

I know that perhaps I have tired you or given you much to think about. Yet I wish I could remain seated here for five years, right here where we are now. Speaking does not tire me at all. I could sit here for five years without getting up and tell you my thoughts on all these matters—things of which our good people have been deprived and which they do not know. And so they seek refreshment in places where there is none of the freshness and delight given by Christ, His Mother, and His Saints. We are a blessed and ancient people. At their roots stand the Greeks and the Jews.

As a people, we are brothers of the Jews. But our blessing lies in this: we did not take part in the Crucifixion of Christ. And Christ said, “You will remain under the curse until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes.’” They appear perfectly happy and all-powerful, but one day, very soon, that power will pass away, and then you will see what Hellenism is, what it means to be Greek, what an Orthodox Christian in the Church is, and what an Orthodox priest is. Then you will understand it and feel it. Mothers do not merely feed children. Children could come here and eat wheat and canned food; that is food fit for human beings.

The distinctive gift of a mother—a Greek mother—is that she alone raises saints; she raises human beings, extraordinary people with a great and boundless mission. And you will see it. I may not live to see it, because perhaps I have only one or two years left. But if you live another three, four, or five years, you will see these things, and then you will understand. For now, we are ashamed to say that we are Greeks, and we are ashamed to raise our hands and make the sign of the Cross. Yet consider the great honor God has shown us and the blessing He has given us. For years, they have wanted to wipe us from the face of the earth. You can hardly find us on the map; take a map of the world, and you barely know where Greece is. And yet the whole world is against the Greek people, against our language, against our faith, and against Christ our God. Why? Because we possess the truth, though we do not know it. So begin now: take courage and

be certain that Christ will bless you from one age to the next. This I pray through the intercessions of the Holy Fathers who are present here.

Ποιος θα είναι ο σώφρων; Η ψυχή σου, η οποία θα είναι να διοικήσει αυτά τα πράγματα, ώστε να μη σου γίνουν αιτία κακού και απωλείας, πολλάκις και της εφημέρου αυτής ζωής. Διότι διάβαζα κάποτε ότι πέντε, οι οποίοι κέρδισαν, επήραν μάλλον το λαχείο, σε ένα μήνα δεν υπήρχε κανένας. Με τα χρήματα αυτά κάποιος έκανε ταξίδι, έπεσε από το αεροπλάνο· άλλος πήρε ένα αυτοκίνητο αεροδυναμικό, τον μαζέψανε από ένα ποτάμι. Και οι πέντε, εξαιτίας αυτών των χρημάτων, έχασαν και την προσωρινότητα· όχι την αιωνιότητα, και την προσωρινότητα ακόμη. Θα ήθελα, λοιπόν, να ρωτήσω τώρα τον εαυτό μου και σας: Εσείς πώς περίπου σκέπτεστε το θέμα αυτό;

Πλησιάσαμε προς το μέρος το δικό μου και άρχισε να κλαίει. Λέγω: «Είτε κλαις είτε δεν κλαις, η απάντησή μου είναι αυτή». Δηλαδή με πήγε περίπου μισή ώρα πεζή. Άρχισε να κλαίει, διότι έγινε σύγκρουση. Εγώ την πίεζα να προσευχηθεί κατά τέτοια έννοια, πράγμα το οποίο η λογική της δεν το υπεστήριζε. Και εφόσον με τη λογική της δεν το έβγαζε, του λέει: «Δεν μπορεί να γίνει αυτό το πράγμα». «Τέλος πάντων, να σας πω», μου λέει. «Δεν θέλω να μου πεις, δεν θέλω να ακούσω τι σου συμβαίνει. Κράτησέ το δικό σου, ας το ξέρει ο Κύριος. Μην τα συζητήσεις, τις πτώσεις σου μην τις συζητήσεις». Την εγκατέλειψα, λοιπόν, και έφυγα, γιατί είχα φτάσει και στα σύνορα εκεί, στη γειτονιά μου. Θα βλέπουν τώρα τον Παναγόπουλο το βράδυ και να έχει μια κοπελίτσα να κλαίει. «Τι κάνει ο Παναγόπουλος τέτοια ώρα;» Ούτε ήταν αυτός· Ευαγγέλιο από το ένα μέρος και κλάμα τα ποτάμια. Τι συμβαίνει εδώ; Την άλλη Τετάρτη, τυχαία. Είναι αλήθεια, κι εγώ που πήγα το βράδυ σπίτι και έκαμα την προσευχή μου, είπα: «Κύριέ μου, Συ γνωρίζεις, Συ σταυρώθηκες γι’ αυτό το παιδί. Πάρε την υπόθεσή της στα χέρια Σου. Ξέρω εγώ;

από σένα. «Μα πρέπει», μου λέει, «να το μάθεις». «Ωραία, δεν θέλω να το μάθω». «Μα θα τρυπήσει η κοιλιά σου», λέω, «αν το κρατήσεις. Εγώ δεν θέλω να το μάθω». Τέλος πάντων, με πίεσε. «Πρέπει να το μάθεις». «Πες το λοιπόν, άντε να το μάθω». Αυτή ήτο ζωντοχήρα. Είχε και μία άλλη αδελφή και τον γαμπρό της και μένανε μέσα στο πατρικό της, το οποίο ήταν αυλή. Μέσα εκεί είχαν νοικιάσει σε ένα σοφέρ ένα δωμάτιο και με τον σοφέρ αυτό αμάρτανε αυτή. Όταν άκουσε τα δικά μου τα κηρύγματα, ήρθε στον εαυτό της. Όμως, πώς θα αφήσει την αμαρτία μαζί του, που αυτός την εξεβίαζε ότι θα το μαρτυρήσει στους δικούς της κ.λπ.;

Μέσα στη βρώμα έμειναν, μέσα στους κροκοδείλους έμειναν, μέσα στη βρώμα των ταύρων και των βοών έμειναν μέσα εκεί έξι μήνες. Έχετε τη γνώμη ότι είχαν μάνικες εκεί μέσα με πίεση και καθάριζαν την Κιβωτό; Ή έχετε τη γνώμη ότι είχε υδραυλικά μέσα και καθάριζε και αποσμητικά και αρωμάτιζε την Κιβωτό;

Όλα του να τα εξαρτά από τον Χριστό. Να χρησιμοποιεί τις πρεσβείες της Παναγίας, της Μητέρας. Οικογενειακό πρόσωπο· τον κράτησε εννιά μήνες η κοιλιά της. Μου έδωσαν ερώτημα χθες το βράδυ: «Πώς μπορεί να λέγεται Παναγία και να μην λέγεται Μαρία;» Γιατί, να λέγεται Μαρία, δεν είναι Παναγία; Δεν εκράτησε εννιά μήνες τον Πανάγιο Θεό μέσα της; Τι έγινε λοιπόν αυτή η γυναίκα; Απλούς άνθρωπος έμενε πάλι; Πώς τον κράτησε τον Θεό μέσα της; Παίρνει, λέτε, το Τίμιο Ξύλο, λέει, τον Σταυρό. Τι είναι; Δεν είναι Τίμιο Ξύλο, εφόσον εποτίσθη με το Τίμιο Αίμα του Θεού; Τι είναι αυτό το ξύλο;
