Summary

The feast of the Hypapante commemorates the forty-day-old Christ being presented in the Jerusalem Temple according to the Mosaic Law. Led into the Temple by the Holy Spirit, Simeon received Jesus in his arms and proclaimed Him as God’s salvation, a light to the Gentiles, and the glory of Israel. The lecture concludes that authentic faith centers on Jesus Christ as crucified, risen, divine, and the unique Savior of the world.

This evening, by the grace of the Lord, I would like to take my subject from today’s feast. As you know, today our Holy Church celebrated the Hypapante—the Meeting of the Lord—of our Most Holy Theotokos and our Lord. It is both a feast of the Lord and a feast of the Theotokos, one of the many feasts associated with our Most Holy Theotokos. This is the Hypapante, observed about forty days after the Nativity.

The Church’s purpose is not to present these events in chronological order. We have already seen Christ baptized at the age of thirty and beginning His public ministry, and now the Church goes back and presents Him to us as a forty-day-old infant. Her purpose is not to set out the dates, but to show us the events. The Hypapante is what we call the forty-day churching, which continues to this day. Secondly, I do not know whether you have ever read about these events in the Old Testament. God had commanded that this be done after forty days. If a woman had given birth to a boy, she was considered unclean and, as is still observed today, could not enter the Temple. After this rite had been performed

there, she was free from the restriction, just as today a woman is free to return after the forty-day churching. If she had given birth to a girl, she was considered unclean for eighty days. It was forty days only for a boy; for a girl it was eighty, twice as long. A kind of celebration was then held. What was offered depended on the means of the couple who came. Were they poor or wealthy? If they were wealthy, they brought a lamb and a dove. They slaughtered the lamb and, with the blood of the lamb,

sprinkled the dove, then released it and departed absolved. If they were poor, they brought a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Again, they slaughtered one, sprinkled with its blood, and released the other to fly away. These were symbolic acts, showing that one day Christ would be slain so that the human soul might be set free through His blood. They were intended to teach people and remind them what this Firstborn—Christ—would one day do for the salvation of mankind. Luke the Evangelist is the only one who records these events, as well as Christ’s coming to the Temple at the age of twelve, and the two annunciations: the annunciation

to Zacharias and Elizabeth concerning the Forerunner of Christ, and, six months later, the Annunciation concerning the conception of our Most Holy Theotokos. Luke is the one who records all these details. He also writes how Christ came to be born in Bethlehem, then about Christ’s circumcision on the eighth day, and afterward about the Hypapante. All these things are found here in the first and second chapters. The second chapter contains the Nativity and the events that follow: the Hypapante, Christ in the Temple at the age of twelve, and the Circumcision. What we are discussing now is recorded in the twenty-second verse of this chapter of Luke: “And when,” he says, “the days of their purification were fulfilled”

“according to the Law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord, as it is written in the Law of the Lord: ‘Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,’ and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.’” Yes, indeed. As it appears, they were still in Bethlehem at this time. From there they went to Jerusalem, and afterward they returned and came to Nazareth, where the remaining events took place. These are still the earliest days; things have not yet progressed further. In any case, I have explained exactly what the Law required, and they observed the Law in every respect.

We too must observe the law—everything prescribed by the Canons of the Church—and receive the prayers the Church offers. We should not rush to ask for some abbreviated half-churching so that we can go dancing or take a trip. Women should remain quietly at home if they do not want the devil to gain a hold over them. For as long as a woman has not yet received the forty-day churching, she should not be going about or receiving visitors at home. She should not. We have relaxed all these things. We treat them as nothing, and many even consider them unnecessary. Many women who gave birth did not receive the prayers appointed after childbirth; that is, they did not receive what the Church offered,

because they considered it their right and believed they had no need of these things. That is why we see the situation we have today: our children do not listen to us, and we cannot establish order anywhere. We are demon-ridden; we cannot understand one another; we are not living as human beings. We live in a jungle—a small jungle in some homes and a large one in others. Of course, those who struggle and do things properly also have their temptations, but they do not have as many, and in the end they overcome because they follow the right path. Here are God and the Most Holy Theotokos: she goes to the Church and does what God has commanded. Who are we? Are we greater than they are, so that we may do as we please—or do nothing—and still imagine that we are in the right? We are not. Do you remember what our Lord said to the honorable Forerunner on the day of His Baptism, when the Forerunner said to Him, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” The Lord replied, “Permit it now, for we must fulfill all righteousness.”

Righteousness? What righteousness? That the holy Christ should be baptized? That the holy Christ should be circumcised? That the holy Christ should go to the Church? That He who sanctifies the Church should go to be sanctified by the Church? He did all these things to leave us an example: you too, O man, must do everything. If you wish to come where I am, where I have gone, you must do everything as I did when I became man, beginning from infancy. As Peter says, “leaving us an example, that we should follow in His footsteps.” It is like a strong man walking through the snow, while we step into his footprints so that we may make it safely across without falling into a ravine and being lost. So I say again: when the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ observe the Law, who are we not to observe it? And if we do not, what can we naturally expect

from God? The account now moves to another passage, which says: “And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel”—awaiting some way for Israel to be comforted—“and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death”—that is, “You will not die”—“before he had seen the Lord’s Christ,” before he saw the Christ whom God would send.

I do not know whether you know anything about Simeon the God-Receiver. Tradition, the other source of the Church’s knowledge, tells us that Simeon the God-Receiver was one of the seventy translators. The Old Testament known as the Septuagint, or “according to the Seventy,” was originally a Hebrew text. In 280 BC, God illumined one of the Ptolemies, a descendant and successor of Alexander the Great, to ask the Jews for these writings

and for the Hebrew Bible to be given to them so that it could be translated into Greek. If you read the account, you will see that the Jews initially refused. They said, “These are the writings of our Prophet and our God. They are for us, not for others. Whatever you do to us, you cannot make us change our minds.” Letters were exchanged—two or three of them—and negotiations continued until they were persuaded, perhaps through fear; I do not know exactly how, but they yielded. It seems that God also illumined them, and so the Jews agreed. The Hebrew text—the prophecies, the Psalms, and all the rest—was handed over to be translated. They agreed to appoint thirty-six Greek-speaking Jews and thirty-six...

Hebrew-speaking Greeks, working in pairs, to translate the Old Testament: thirty-six and thirty-six, making seventy-two. Strictly speaking, the text should be called “according to the Seventy-Two.” For brevity and ease of speech, however, we call it “according to the Seventy,” the Septuagint. But there were seventy-two. When they had translated the Old Testament in pairs and compared their work, they found that, although they had translated separately, they had all produced the same translation. This is evidence that the Holy Spirit illumined them in their work. Had this not happened, we would not have the Old Testament today, because the Temple was later burned, and the Hebrew text was burned with it. The Jews lost it.

Out of pride, however, they did not afterward ask for the translated text. Instead, they made their own version, gathering whatever ancient manuscripts they still had. This is the Hebrew Old Testament they possess today, which is also used by Protestants and Jehovah’s Witnesses and is said to be “based on ancient manuscripts.” About ten books are missing from it, including those that speak of Christ as God and as Wisdom. I mention these things simply as matters of textual history. Simeon was one of those translators. Together with his companions, he had translated the seventh chapter of Isaiah. There it said: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Emmanuel,” and so forth.

They finished their work.

Then each man set out for his own homeland and village. Tradition continues that, while they were traveling, they discussed what they had translated. Simeon said, “I translated one passage, but I do not believe it will ever be fulfilled.” What did it say? It said that a Virgin would give birth. “That is impossible.” He began arguing with his companion. “It is not possible.” “It will be fulfilled.” But Simeon would not accept it. They came to a high place overlooking a river, and there he took off his ring and threw it into the water. Stubbornly he said, “If it is possible for this ring to return to my hand—to come back to me—then it is equally possible for this verse to be fulfilled, that a Virgin will give birth.”

I do not know whether any of the ladies or gentlemen here have visited the Holy Land and gone to the sacred monastery called Katamonas. There are twenty monasteries around the All-Holy Sepulchre, and one of them is called Katamonas. The tomb of Simeon the God-Receiver is there. Tomorrow the Church commemorates him in the Synaxis of Simeon the God-Receiver, after he has played the leading role in today’s feast. There is an icon there depicting Simeon translating as one of the Seventy and, while traveling, becoming involved in an argument and throwing his ring into the river. And then, what do you think happened? The next day he bought some fish, and inside the gills of one of them he found his ring. From that moment on, he held his tongue.

Do you know what another tradition says? It says that he was struck across the face. When he said, “This is impossible,” an unseen hand struck him and a voice said, “Not only will this happen, but you yourself will take Him into your arms.” This is what the words “it had been revealed to him” mean. The Holy Spirit had told him: “You will not die until you not only see Him but also take Him into your arms.” And the Holy Spirit preserved him until then. He must have been more than three hundred years old. The translation was made about 280 years before Christ, in the time of the Ptolemies, and to have been qualified to participate in such a translation, he must already have been a mature and educated man, perhaps thirty-five or forty years old. Add thirty, thirty-five, or forty to 280, and we arrive at about 320 years. That is how long this elder, Simeon, lived.

By then he had retired from the Temple and from his service there. But on that day, when Christ had come into the world and His mother went to fulfill the requirements of the Law, Simeon was illumined by the Holy Spirit and went to the Temple—to Solomon’s Temple. There he encountered Joseph, Mary, and the Child. And so the Child came into his arms. The Holy Spirit had told him that “he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” Christ is the One sent by God, the One we need from God. Christ is the One everyone needs. Woe to those who do not come to know Christ in this world. Let them be whoever they wish.

Let them possess whatever glory they desire—the glory of Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Onassis, Stalin, or Roosevelt. Let them be whoever they wish. If you do not come to know Christ, it would have been better for you not to have been born, because all these things here are a mockery. Glory, money, the flesh, and the world are all a mockery. They are like carob pods that you chew and spit out. “You will not die,” the Holy Spirit told him, and “he came by the Spirit into the Temple.” He was led there. Sometimes we say, “Get up—it was as though someone were telling me to go,” and so we went. In this case, the One telling him was the Holy Spirit. “And he came by the Spirit into the Temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus”—at the very moment when the parents were arriving with the Child Jesus—“to do for Him according to the custom of the Law,”

They came to do what they were obliged to do, the prescribed rites, carrying the little doves and the cage and all the rest. “And he received Him”; he took the little Child “into his arms, blessed God, and said.” For the Holy Spirit showed him that this was the One of whom the prophecy spoke. Perhaps he also remembered the slap and the promises. He was given the assurance: this is He. And what did he say when he took the Child in his arms and saw Him? The elder Simeon had read the Prophets. He had read about the Messiah who was to come. And now he saw Isaiah 7:14 fulfilled: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son.”

He takes the Child into his arms and feels as though he were holding a live electric wire. He understands that this is no ordinary child, but the Child. Then his heart opens, and once again, through the Holy Spirit, he speaks the words that all of us should know: “Now”—now that I have taken Him into my arms—“You are releasing Your servant, Master, according to Your word, in peace.” What was that word? That he would depart and undergo death once he had seen Him; until then, death would not come to him. You gave me this promise. And so, “Now You are releasing Your servant, Master, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation.” This Child is the salvation of the world, the remedy for the world. “My eyes have seen Your salvation. Now You are releasing Your servant, Master.” Which one of us can say such a thing?

We knock on wood and leap from our seats whenever death is mentioned. But Simeon says, “Release me now.” If someone comes back from a cemetery, we will hardly let him into the house. We break plates, turn mirrors around, and do all sorts of things because of death. Yet Simeon says, “Now You are releasing Your servant, Master.” What does “release me” mean? Were you bound? Of course. Man is imprisoned and does not realize it. He regards the flesh as something tremendously important. We shall understand only when we fly free, when this shell called the flesh is broken. We feed it, pamper it, and honor it. I will not mention the other things people do to it; we know them already. We treat it as though it were something great, but it is nothing of the kind. It is a prison.

How inconsistent and foolish man is: he fears death, though he does not admit it. “Life is sweet,” he says. That is false—utterly false. Human life is nine hundred and ninety-nine tears and one smile, not even one laugh. And that is true even of the person we call most successful. Consider his jealousy, his envy, his fears, and all the rest. People tremble. When they hear of cancer, heart disease, or an accident—the three great terrors—they tremble and lose all color in their faces. Man ought to ride toward death like a conqueror. But why do we fear death? Because our account books are stained.

Death is followed by judgment; it requires us to give an account. And our account books are stained. That is precisely why we fear death and do not want it. Christ said, “I have finished the work which You gave Me to do.” We too have a work to accomplish in this life, yet we are not doing it. Do you know what that work is? It is to make a white garment for our soul, so that on that day we may appear with our nakedness covered. For we are descendants of Adam and Eve, who were naked and deprived of grace. Yet some of us have not even obtained the cloth; we have not sewn a stitch or tried the garment on—nothing. A few days ago...

Just the other night, a relative I knew died here at the age of eighty-four. She wanted nothing to do with religion. I spoke to her in every possible tone and manner, telling her that it was time to take heed and consider how long God had endured her and allowed her to live. “My dear Dimitri,” she said, “I will keep all that in mind. When I grow old, I will put everything in order.” It made me smile, as you can imagine. That is how man thinks. He does not want to face the matter. Three persons spoke those great words: Christ, Paul, and Simeon the God-Receiver. They said it plainly: “I am ready.”

Christ said, “Father, I have finished the work You gave Me to do.” Paul said, “I have kept the faith; I have finished the course,” and so forth. “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness.” Are we making any effort toward this? Does man believe that he is imprisoned within the body and that, once released from it, he will be far better off? Ask the chicks. Truly, earthly man is worse than a chick. The chick is curled up inside its shell, and its mother asks from outside, “Would you like to come out?” “No!” “But you must come out. It is good outside. There is sunshine, free food, worms, and all sorts of things. The mistress will even crumble another egg for you to eat.” But the chick does not listen. It breaks through forcefully and comes out, stretching itself at last.

“Look at this! I was sitting in there all curled up. I sat there while they rolled me about and fouled the shell above me, and still I did not want to come out. Just look!” In exactly the same way, we shall stretch ourselves out when we die, because we shall be brought out by force, whether we want it or not. No one has remained here; how could we? Yet we, who consider ourselves so advanced, so rational, and so accomplished, refuse to look this matter of death straight in the face. We do not want to. Some even dare to say, “I do not want to see what happens afterward.” We often hear someone say, “If only I see him return to Christ,” or, “If only I see her return to Christ, then I can die.” But if that person does not return to Christ and lives another fifty or sixty years, are you to remain here waiting until you see it happen?

From there you will not be able to see whether that person has returned. And what benefit would you gain from seeing it? Will anyone demand an account from you because another person failed and refused to move forward? Follow your own path, entrust that person to the hands and providence of God, and do not let Satan deceive you. You may claim that you say, “If only I see him return, then I can die,” out of openheartedness and affection. It is pride, whether you realize it or not. Whether I die or remain alive, that person must settle matters with God. Therefore the words, “Now You are releasing Your servant, Master,” should bring us to self-examination. We too must reach that point somehow, and to reach it we must first set out. We must take this seriously. Otherwise, we have made no progress at all. But let us continue.

“My eyes have seen Your salvation.” You counted me worthy to behold Your salvation with my bodily eyes, “which You have prepared before the face of all peoples.” Christ comes as the Savior of the whole world, not of the Jews alone. The Jews are simply the leaven—the leaven through which He would cause the whole world to rise. You see, for example, when Paul left Jerusalem, passed through Philippi, went down to Thessalonica, continued to Berea, came to Athens, and then went down to Corinth, he would visit the Jewish synagogues. He began there because they kept the Law and held the sacred books in their hands. He went to persuade them that what their books proclaimed—what Isaiah said here...

what David said there, and what Daniel said elsewhere—had now taken place and been fulfilled. Those who believed became, we might say, the fire by which the rest of the dough would be warmed and caused to rise. That is where it began. He would be, Simeon says, “a light for revelation to the Gentiles,” who had remained in darkness, “and the glory of Your people Israel,” because salvation would begin from them. Sadly, however, many did not take heed, and some of their leaders bore responsibility for Christ’s death. To this day they remain scattered to the four corners of the earth. They are forming a state again, but a state without God cannot be called Israel, because Israel means...

“with God.” They still do not accept Christ and, consequently, where they have now gone they will probably suffer harm rather than receive benefit. I do not wish to make prophecies. These things have been written by our Holy Fathers, and anyone may read them there.

“And Joseph and His mother marveled at the things spoken concerning Him.” Joseph and Mary listened to what the elder was saying as he held the Child in his arms. “And Simeon blessed them”—he blessed Joseph and Mary—and then turned to Mary. “And he said to Mary His mother: Behold”—take careful notice—“this little Child whom I hold in my arms is appointed for the fall and the rising of many.” Because of this Child, many will descend into Hades, while many will rise into the Kingdom of Heaven. Some will fall to ruin, and others will be saved. And so it remains to this day.

He is the dividing line and the measure. He is the One who separates those on the right from those on the left. We shall not be judged according to Buddha, Muhammad, Zoroaster, the Pope, or anyone else. What matters is the relationship of every human being with Christ. “This Child,” Simeon says, “is appointed for the fall and the rising of many.” He is the dividing line; He is the criterion. He is appointed “for the rising of many and as a sign that will be spoken against.” And do you know that in America alone there are now four hundred different religious denominations?

Four hundred, according to a survey conducted last year. All claim to possess Christ and the truth. But are there four hundred truths, or is there one truth that all should possess? They do not all possess it. Christ remains a sign that is spoken against even today—even among us. Man will accept everything except Christ. He likes morality, mercy, goodness, and all such things. But when you come to Christ Himself, and especially to the divinity of Christ and the Resurrection of Christ, then people reveal themselves; there the wicked are distinguished from the good. Christ is the touchstone. As you know, people readily believe in some higher power. Others readily believe in a supreme God. Some even believe in God.

Some even believe in Christ, but they do not believe in the Christ proclaimed by the angel to the myrrh-bearing women. Yet this is the Christ of whom Simeon speaks; this is Christ. Do you remember what the angel said to the myrrh-bearing women? “Why do you seek here Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified? He is not here; He is risen.” He did not proclaim merely some Jesus—a Christ who was a philosopher, or a communist Christ, as some say. Once, while I was working, someone told me, “Christ was a communist.”

Others speak of a socialist Christ, a lofty human being, a cunning man, a mystic—any sort of Christ. But no: the true Christ is the crucified Nazarene who is risen. Here the paths divide. Christ is risen. When you tell someone, “The Christ of whom I am speaking to you is risen,” the conversation often stops right there. Remember how the discussion stopped at the Areopagus here in Athens, among our forefathers, when the Apostle Paul dared to say that Christ had risen. The moment they heard of the Resurrection, they found it so absurd that they broke off the discussion, saying, “We will hear you again about this another time.” They could not swallow it or accept it. “We have heard enough from you for now.” So when they heard of the Resurrection, they stopped there.

And that is where many people still stop. Yet, taking this opportunity, my dear friends, I ask you to pay close attention to this point. All the so-called founders of religions whom I mentioned earlier—Muhammad, Buddha, Zoroaster, and all the others—remain confined within their burial shrouds. Go to Mecca and you will find Muhammad there. The same is true of every other founder of the so-called religions. They are not the true Faith: the Orthodox Faith alone is the true Faith; the others are religions and belief systems. Only the Head...

of the Orthodox Church has left His tomb empty. “Why do you seek Him here? He is not here; He is risen”—Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. There were other men named Jesus, but this is Jesus the crucified Nazarene. “He is not here; He is risen.” His tomb is empty, and from that empty tomb we draw strength and receive the truth. Two tombs are empty: that of the Author of Life and that of the Mother of Life. All the others who claim to be founders of religions and able to save mankind remain confined within their tombs. Only two tombs are empty: those of Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos—Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos.

For us, this is the guarantee: there is no salvation outside Christ. Sadly, Simeon’s prophecy is still being fulfilled today. All are divided over Christ, and all strike their faces against Christ, the Rock of Ages. Whoever accepts Him is saved; whoever does not accept Him is not saved. The sign spoken against today is Christ—not simply as a person, but as the One who died and rose again. That is where people stumble. This is why, as I told you, I am speaking of the Christ proclaimed by the angel: “Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is not here; He is risen.” We are speaking of this Christ. And when a person comes to this point, he cannot accept it.

He does not believe in the Resurrection; he does not believe in the divinity of Jesus. These are the two fundamental truths he rejects. He wants Christ to be a great man, a reformer, a moral teacher—anything at all—but he does not want Him as God. He cannot grasp it; he does not want it; he rejects both the divinity of Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus. Yet the whole edifice of the Orthodox faith and the salvation of mankind rests upon these two rocks: the divinity of Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus. For if Christ is not God, but merely a man, how will you be saved? How will I be saved? If He were only a man, He Himself would need salvation. What can one dead man do for another?

And if Christ did not rise, how shall I rise, and how shall you rise? If there is no Resurrection, what is the point of this life? Why not end it all the moment you begin to suffer? And yet Christ was God, and Christ rose. He was both God and man, both the Son of God and the son of the Virgin. What a wondrous and extraordinary mystery! Yet it never occurs to people to think about this seriously and ask why these things are so. They look at it from a distance and say, “The priests invented all this to keep us under their control.” They imagine themselves very clever. Once, on my way to Patras to give a talk, I was travelling with a female student from Corinth. A discussion began behind me among four young people—two young women and two young men.

They were speaking against religion. They said it was the opium of the people, that it kept people backward, that it held them down in this way and that, and so on. One young woman, about sixteen or seventeen years old, was speaking very openly, and at last I felt compelled to intervene. They had not addressed me, but since they were speaking loudly, anyone could take part. They were not talking secretly or quietly. When we got off, I said, “Forgive me, children, but I heard you over there saying many things against religion and against Christ.” “Yes,” she said, “because people like you represent the establishment”—meaning that we were the old, rusty minds. “You think you have progressed?” I asked. “Of course we have progressed,” she replied. Then the thought came to me to answer her—but perhaps I had better leave unwritten what I said.

“Do you consider it progress that your mother did not take off her underwear in public, while you do?” I put it to her differently, but that was the point. “Is that what you call progress? I am deeply sorry if that is progress. Is that where everything is to be found? Is that what progress has come to mean today? If this is progress, then I am indeed part of the establishment, and so is your mother, who was moral and honorable.”

In any case, people do not want Christ. They compare your Christ with their unlawful way of life, their unlawful bed, their unlawful pleasures, and their unlawful interests—and they do not want Christ. This is the point. Yet if you say that you believe in Christ, you must believe in the Christ whom Simeon revealed and pointed out: “This is the Christ of whom it was written.” It is this Christ we are speaking about, not some other Christ.

That is why I tell you that this is a dogmatic matter: Christ is shown to be both man and God. He performs miracles. Could He do them merely as a man? He makes clay with saliva—but can a man open the tomb of someone who has been buried for four days? No; God does that. Can a man walk upon the sea? No; God does that. From afar He knows what has happened to Lazarus: that he has died, and that this will not end in death but will serve the glory of God, because He will raise him. An ordinary man cannot know this. Christ is buried, and He rises, leaving the grave cloths behind, together with all the evidence that He had been there. Yet they say that His disciples stole Him. He rose, for if they had stolen Him, they would have taken the face cloth and the linen in which He had been wrapped as well. These are the works of God. Yet at the same time He weeps before the tomb of Lazarus, although He knows that He will raise him in a few moments. He weeps on Golgotha.

He suffers anguish and says, “Let this cup pass from Me.” There you see His human nature. He eats; He sleeps in the boat. He is man. He asks, “Where have you laid him?” You may say, “You knew that he had died; do You not know where they laid him?” Yes—but He is showing us that He is also man. Yet people do not want to follow Christ closely: to see Him through His works and miracles as God, and through His ordinary human life as man. Saint Proclus, Bishop and Patriarch of Constantinople and a disciple of the blessed John Chrysostom, expressed these two natures of Christ—revealed today by Simeon—in a beautiful saying: “I behold the miracles He performs and proclaim His divinity. I behold His sufferings…”

“He hungers, He weeps, He asks questions—and I do not deny His humanity.” He is both God and man. This, then, is the sign that is spoken against. Blessed is the person who humbles himself and is willing to receive salvation as it is offered to him. In any case, Joseph and His mother marveled. Simeon then turned to the mother and said, “And a sword will pierce through your own soul also.” A sword—a blade, a deep wound—would pierce her soul when, a short time later, she saw Him hanging upon Golgotha. And indeed, a sword pierced her soul. What would this bring about?

Through Christ, the thoughts of many hearts would be uncovered. At the same time, there was also a woman there, eighty-four years old, who likewise prophesied about this Child, just as Simeon had. She had lived with her husband for seven years, and for the remainder of her life, until the age of eighty-four, she remained continually in the Temple, fasting and praying. Listen to how the passage says it: “And there was Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years,” an elderly woman by then, “having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity; and she was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the Temple, but served God with fasting and supplications…”

“…night and day. And coming in at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord.” She too spoke about Him, about this little Child, “to all who were awaiting redemption in Jerusalem,” for He would be the redemption of Jerusalem. Thus there were immediately two testimonies concerning Christ. These are the verses from the second chapter of Luke, ending with verse 38, which recount the event celebrated today by our Church—and which you, in a certain sense, celebrate especially because of your connection with these things. In the few minutes remaining to me, I would like to dwell on one moral lesson that arises from the principal figure here, the Most Holy Theotokos.

The Child is still an infant; He has not yet begun His public ministry. The central figure at this point is the Most Holy Theotokos. As a mother, she considers it her duty to bring her Child to God. This is fundamental. Yet, if some mothers will permit me to say so, today this is the one thing they do not think about. They regard the Church as secondary; they regard God and religion as secondary. A few years ago I went to the school attended by my child. The teachers had invited us so that they could tell us how the children were progressing in their studies, while we could discuss the problems we faced with them at home, allowing teachers and parents to work together to help each child. Ahead of me in the line was a woman who, by worldly standards, was well dressed and presentable.

I was standing about a yard away, so I could hear almost everything they said. She asked, “How is Michalis doing?”—Michalis was her son. “We are not doing well at all,” the teacher said. “What do you mean? You are being unfair to Michalis.” “How do you know that we are being unfair to him?” “Because I know that he leaves home fully prepared. I sit over him while he studies. He does not leave ready to receive merely a fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, or nineteen out of twenty. Michalis leaves home ready to receive twenty out of twenty.” “Please calm down,” the teacher replied. “I am not speaking to you about Michalis’s schoolwork. I am speaking to you about Michalis himself. Things are not going well—indeed, he is doing very badly.” “I did not send him here for that. I sent him here to learn his lessons.”

“I am telling you about something else: he is not becoming a decent human being.”

The child is taking a different road, and tomorrow his education will become a double-edged sword in his hand; with it he may even cut off his own mother’s head. Yet she would not take that into account. “Please,” she said, “I sent him here, and I pay you, so that he may learn his lessons. Everything else is none of your concern.”

Do you understand? Do you know how many mothers like this there are? There are many. And they will give an account to God, because God gave them a soul to care for, while they intend to return a diploma to Him. “Have you brought Me a diploma? I want the child’s soul first, and only then the diploma. I have no need of the diploma,” Christ will say. “My own hands were calloused; I was a carpenter. Paul’s hands were pierced and worn; he was a tentmaker. Whether your son or daughter has a diploma is not the issue. I gave you that soul, and it is the soul I ask of you.” And I ask the mothers who are listening now, and those who will listen when this recording reaches them: What can they answer in such a case? Will they return to Christ the souls that Christ entrusted to them? That is the question. We have done many crooked things in our lives, and God has shown us forbearance; we must take heed. We parents are guilty. We look at the child only in terms of knowledge and outward appearance, almost as a piece of furniture or an object. We do not see the child as a soul. We think only of this temporary life and worldly success—how the child will establish a position, avoid hard work, and live comfortably. We do not see the child in the light of eternity, where one day God will demand an account from us.

God entrusted angels to us. They smile at us from their cradles; they run to kiss the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos; when they see a priest in the street, they regard him as a man of God and run to kiss his hand. Yet these little angels given to us by Christ are returned to Him as little demons—we have made them so. Some were ruined by the neighborhood, others farther afield, and others within their own homes.

Today we have shaped our homes in such a way that children cannot remain as God gave them to us; they are bound to be led astray. For there is an invisible hand behind the various programs and spectacles our children watch—things we ourselves paid for and brought into our homes, only for our children to be corrupted by them. An account will be demanded. Whenever we consider the Most Holy Theotokos, especially in her motherhood, we are given an opportunity to reflect upon this.

Many women ought to claim no relationship at all with the Most Holy Theotokos, because they refused to become mothers. Among the other talents God has given us, there are two fundamental gifts: life and the multiplication of life. This is a talent entrusted to us. When I give you a talent to put to work—when I have five children in mind for you—and you bear none, or bear one and throw the other four into the refuse bin, you will give an account one day. “You wicked servant, you hid the talent I gave you. You buried it in the earth—in your flesh, in your little body, in your filth, down there.” Such people should not even celebrate the Most Holy Theotokos or keep her icon in their homes. We honor her as Mother, Daughter, Virgin, Lady, Sovereign, and so much more—yet we deceive ourselves. We have no communion with her; our communion is with sin.

I say this openly, and may she who knows what lies behind this destruction help every person. But each person will be helped only if he himself desires it. Let everyone examine how he lives and labors. Many revelations tell us that the knees of the Most Holy Theotokos are bloodied from prayer. Our own knees are bloodied and calloused by sin. That is the difference. God bears with us; He does not love what we have become. At Compline it is said: “You who love the righteous and show mercy to sinners.” He bears with us and grants us more time for metanoia, for repentance, so that we may change our lives. “I cannot do it!”

But do you want to? When you truly want to, He will give you the strength to do it. And the Most Holy Theotokos will intercede, pleading before the justice of her Son so that we may not be condemned to Hell. I pray that Christ, through her intercessions, will shelter us as individuals, as families, as a people, and as the Church. Amen.

Παίρνει στην αγκαλιά του και νιώθει ότι πιάνει σύρμα ηλεκτρικό στα χέρια του, καταλαβαίνει ότι δεν είναι τυχαίο παιδί αυτό, αλλά είναι το παιδί. Και από εκεί και κάτω ανοίγει την καρδιά του και πάλι, διά Πνεύματος Αγίου, είπε αυτά τα λόγια, τα οποία πρέπει να τα ξέρουμε όλοι: «Νυν», τώρα λέγει πλέον, όσο το πήρα στην αγκαλιά μου, «απολύεις τον δούλον σου, Δέσποτα, κατά το ρήμα σου, εν ειρήνη». Ποιο ήταν το ρήμα του; Ότι θα φύγεις, θα δεχτείς θάνατο όταν τον ιδείς αυτόν. Μέχρι τότε δεν θα δεχτείς θάνατο. Αυτό μου το έχεις πει σε ρήμα. Τώρα, λοιπόν, «νυν απολύεις τον δούλον σου, Δέσποτα, κατά το ρήμα σου. Ότι είδον οι οφθαλμοί μου το σωτήριόν σου». Αυτό είναι το σωτήριο του κόσμου, το φάρμακο του κόσμου. «Το είδον οι οφθαλμοί μου το σωτήριόν σου. Νυν απολύεις τον δούλον σου, Δέσποτα». Ποιος μπορεί να το πει από εμάς αυτό το πράγμα;
