Summary

After Christ’s Nativity, the Magi obeyed divine warning and returned home without revealing the Child’s location to Herod. The Holy Innocents, John the Forerunner, Stephen the Protomartyr, James the Brother of the Lord, and Joseph reveal that the Church is established through sacrifice and martyrdom. Basil the Great, guided by Saint Macrina, united asceticism, theological learning, pastoral service, and devotion to Scripture as a lasting model for Orthodox families and believers.

The events of Christmas, and this Sunday—which is called the Sunday after Christmas—remind us of what took place. Now, among the strangest things were the difficulties that prevented the Magi from returning to inform Herod

whether they had found the Child or not, as they had agreed, when he told them, “If you find Him, return and let me know, so that I too may have the opportunity to go and worship Him.” Of course, that was not his desire; his desire was quite different. And yet he was thwarted and entangled, because he was dealing not only with the Son of Mary, but also with the Son of God. The Magi were warned to return to their own country, and in faith they obeyed the dream they had seen, leaving Herod to rave in his foolishness, as the Akathist Hymn so beautifully says when speaking of this event. To this very day, I would like you to know, the cave still exists where the Magi found shelter after leaving Bethlehem.

They spent the first night in a cave that still exists and has become the burial place of many: Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch, the mother of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, and other women and men. It lies within the grounds of the Holy Monastery of Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch, in the wilderness of the Jordan. So the Magi departed. Herod waited—Holy Scripture does not say how long—until his patience was exhausted, and then he put into action the plan he had conceived.

From the very moment he heard from these distinguished men that they had come from the East—leaving their positions and homes, spending their money, and traveling for two years to reach Judea—he began to carry out his plan. That is why, as we heard on Christmas Day, he secretly took them aside and, by an indirect line of questioning, determined when the star had appeared. In this way, so to speak, he obtained the date of the Child’s birth, so that he could decide the age below which the children were to be slaughtered. And as we heard today, he sent his men and mercilessly killed all the boys two years old and under, according to the time he had carefully learned from the Magi. Yet once again his plan came to nothing. Why? Because, as I said before, he was dealing not only with the Son of Mary, but also with the Son of God. The Child had already been warned to leave that place and, with the help of Joseph the Betrothed and His Most Holy Mother, He departed for a foreign country, as we would say—for Egypt. He remained there until further notice, when Joseph was told to return because the one who sought the Child’s life was now gone. This account seems to raise many questions, supposed problems, and difficulties. Yet everything is really quite simple.

Things are not as human beings imagine them. If the one being persecuted had been merely a powerful man, he would have done one thing: he would have killed Herod and remained in his own home. God does not act that way. Even today He could remove every wicked person, every unjust person, every blasphemer, every atheist, every denier, and every enemy of His. But where would He remove them to? What would that accomplish? He would merely fill Hell one hour sooner, and tomorrow they could say to Him, “If You had left me longer, I would have repented.” Such patient forbearance belongs not merely to righteous people, but to God Himself. Therefore God made Himself the lesser one, as He still does today before the wickedness and indifference of mankind, and He withdrew from their midst.

He allowed Herod to die a natural death, and after Herod had died, He returned peacefully. Notice how beautifully the angel spoke to Joseph: “Take the Child and His mother.” He did not say, “Take your child and your wife.” No. You are the servant of a lofty purpose. Therefore help the Child and His mother—the bond of kinship is between those two—and depart, depart, depart for Egypt. When these events had run their course and Herod had naturally passed from the scene, the angel appeared again and said to him, “Take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”

Go in peace. But earlier he had to flee. This too is part of the lesson. A person should never expose himself carelessly to danger. If he can protect himself, he should do so. If he cannot protect himself and there is a true necessity, God will protect him. But if it is not necessary for him to remain, God will allow him to withdraw and depart, just as He did with the Honorable Forerunner.

People are scandalized because God allowed this servant of His to be brutally slaughtered through the wickedness of a corrupt man and a corrupt woman. Yet there was a divine dispensation at work, so that he might proclaim the Gospel through his blood. There was a special reason for him to depart from this world, and he departed in this manner. In His love, God did not deprive him of the crown of martyrdom.

A person cannot become a martyr by his own power. Martyrdom is a gift, a grace that God bestows upon His chosen ones, as He had done before. Joseph’s conduct contains a great lesson. He departed into the unknown; he went to a foreign country on a very difficult mission, with a fourteen-year-old girl and an infant in her arms. And he went. Where could he go? Among foreign peoples—where else could he go? Yet he went and remained there without news, without a letter, without anything to tell him what was happening. “Remain there,” God tells him, “stay there until I speak to you. I am watching over you. I care for you,” as Peter so beautifully reminds us:

“Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” You sleep, he says, while God keeps watch, considering how to help you, how to bring everything to a good outcome, how to protect you, and how to help you repent. He keeps all these things in His care. So remain there and do not be anxious. This is difficult. You need great faith to lift up your hands and wait, surrendered entirely, for an answer. And Joseph waited. This holy elder had patient endurance, and he waited. Here is the proof: Herod died, and Joseph did not know it. Another ruler took his place, and Joseph did not know that either. Apparently, only when he reached the border did he learn who was king and who now ruled there. When he heard that it was Archelaus, he became afraid and changed course once again. The man had known nothing.

There are people who reach this point: they know nothing of what is happening in the world and have entrusted everything to the providence of God—their health, their children, their work, their household, their business, absolutely everything. God goes before them, and they follow behind. Many say, “But how will God notify me?” Here is your answer: just as He notified Joseph. Did Joseph hear it on television? Was it broadcast to him on the radio? Did God send him a telegram? God sent His angel, who told him, “Gather your things now, rise peacefully, and return.” And Joseph remained at peace. “For those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” There is no longer any danger. This is God; He has not changed. We are the ones who have changed. We rely upon our own strength and our own sense of justice, and we seek solutions contrary to those which

God has appointed for each person. Herod was deceived, and he killed the children. He slaughtered them and then rested easy. Tomorrow, the twenty-ninth of the month, we commemorate the fourteen thousand infants. Their Holy Relics are in the cave at Bethlehem. If you are counted worthy to go there, you will see them. You will also see larger relics, skulls larger than those of the little children, and bones thicker and larger than theirs. These belong to their parents, who would not release the children from their arms. When Herod’s soldiers came to seize the children, the parents too were killed, and now they are there together in eternity. Besides the parents, the fourteen thousand infants are Holy Martyrs who shed their blood after Christ. I do not know whether you have noticed the sequence of events

that the Church has set before us and called to our remembrance during these days. First comes Christ, the cornerstone of the whole building: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.” Second comes Stephen the Protomartyr, another of the first stones in the Church of Christ. Today James the Brother of the Lord and Joseph the Betrothed are added to the Church of Christ. These commemorations have not been arranged by chance. They were not placed here merely so that we might hear certain words. They have a purpose: they reveal who Christ is, what His Church is like, and who were the first to give their blood. For the Orthodox Church of Christ is founded upon blood. It is not founded upon lies. It is not founded upon papal interests,

upon the satanic inventions of Protestants, or upon those of the various millenarian groups and the many other heresies in the world, which are founded upon worldly self-interest and egotism. No. The Orthodox Church has blood at her roots. That is why she is in no danger. She is the only Church that is in no danger. All the others will fade away. The only one that will remain is the Orthodox Church, because “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her.” God therefore allowed those children to be slaughtered. Ordinarily, the Honorable Forerunner should have been among them. But strangely, since his Lord was in Egypt, he himself was found in the wilderness. Tradition tells us that the elderly Elizabeth took him in her arms and slowly, painfully fled

from the swords of Herod’s soldiers. She reached a place where they caught up with her, intending to seize the Child and slaughter her. She offered a brief prayer and said, “O mountain, receive the Child and His mother.” A small mountain stood before her, and in this manner she found herself sheltered behind it. John then went into the wilderness and remained there, as we know from the other events concerning the Honorable Forerunner, which our Church will set before us immediately after the Baptism of Christ. Although Christ is now presented as eight days old, He will then appear at thirty years of age, and John also will appear at thirty. John was six months older. He should have been included among those children two years old and under, and yet he too escaped. And all people are delivered from the satanic hands

of Satan’s instruments. There are many instruments of Satan: people who become enemies of others because they take no account of death, judgment, or the justice of God. Christ will judge everyone impartially and precisely according to His justice. This is exactly why He gave Herod the opportunity to repent. But Herod did not repent. He remained hard-hearted and carried out this deed. And even then he could still have repented, for he could see that his plan had failed. Who had warned them? Could this Child perhaps be something more? Think about that as well. The wretched man behaved like a dog which, when someone throws a stone at it, tries to bite the stone. It does not look for the hand that threw the stone or ask why it was thrown. This is what happened to Herod,

and it is what often happens to us when we are not watchful. This is why I say that the chain of events following the birth of Christ clearly shows that He did not intervene with force against human wickedness. We demand vengeance upon others. Once—I do not know whether you have read this—Christ and His disciples came to a village. The people there not only refused to receive them and refused to listen to them, but drove them out, practically kicking them as they went. John became angry, and so did Peter, and they said to the Lord, “Shall we command fire to fall upon them, as in the days of Elijah, when the Prophet Elijah called down fire and burned one group of fifty after another?” “No,” He said, “do not do that.”

He said, “We are not of that spirit. We did not come to destroy those who do not receive us. We did not come to destroy those who refuse to listen to us. We did not come to destroy those who insult us. We came to speak to them once, twice, five times, ten times, a hundred times; to wait for them, help them, and show them great forbearance, in the hope that they may choose to repent.” For there is no other means, no other human act, capable of restraining and subduing—so to speak, of disarming—the hand of God and removing the sword of justice from His hand. Only human repentance can do this. There is no other way. You may eat roots for a thousand years and perform every good work in the world,

including all the acts of charity I mentioned, but it will accomplish nothing. God is not appeased by that alone. Repent. This is the solution to the entire matter: repentance together with self-abasement, the correction of injustices, the setting right of blasphemies, and the correction of all other sins. This is what appeases God, disarms His hand, and saves a person. Herod had so much before his eyes, just as Pharaoh had so many miracles before him. Yet instead of restraining himself and saying, “Could I perhaps be mistaken? Let me wait and see,” he immediately did what he did. You know what became of Herod. My beloved, Herod’s body became horribly swollen and was consumed by worms.

They had to tear down the doorway in order to carry him out. That was Herod’s end. Every person who sets himself against God, against His Gospel, against His Saints, against the true faith, against the Mysteries, or against the clergy will meet a dreadful death, whose signs will be evident even in this world. You will see a person unable to die for an entire week; you will see him turn completely black; you will see him become savage; you will hear him cry out; you will witness dreadful and extraordinary things. Their signs will remain visible even in this world. In the same way, all the deniers, including those philosophers who departed this life denying God, manifested satanic signs in their dying hours, signs that remained as a warning to others. It is recorded that

One such man is mentioned—perhaps the well-read among you know him—by the name of Voltaire. He was a great atheist. But he had a maidservant, and after he died, another man asked her to work for him. She said, “What sort of man is he? Is he a believer? Could he be like my first master? I do not want to go near him, and I do not want to witness his death as well.” So horrifying had Voltaire’s death been. Consequently, all who sought to oppose God’s plan came to a wretched end—a wretched end even in the eyes of the world, not only beyond the grave but here, before the grave. So let us not set ourselves against God. Let each person consider and discover where he was before he came into this world.

Let him look at what he sees around him, what he hears, what he tastes, and what he feels. Let him speak with that voice called conscience, which rejoices when he does good and recoils when he does evil. He will discover that something else, something invisible, is all around him, surrounding him, and that he cannot escape it. You may escape another person; you may escape your enemy; you may escape all manner of things—but you cannot escape God. Wherever you hide, wherever you stand, there is a voice within you. Go into the desert, go out to sea, rise into the air, descend into the depths of the earth—wherever you go, you carry within yourself God’s representative, which cries out and says: “It is not lawful for you. What you are doing is not right; what you said is not right; what you are thinking is not right.” This reality follows a person everywhere...

Before the grave, you too will suffer in this world, since God Himself suffered. Was there any reason for Him to flee as a refugee, for a Child to go to Egypt? Was there any reason for His mother, the Most Holy Theotokos—purer than the Cherubim and the Seraphim—to go there and endure such hardship, or for that elderly man Joseph to suffer all these things? And yet this is the lot of all who wish to live a godly life. “All who desire to live godly lives will be persecuted,” Scripture says. So let us not turn away. This is not merely some little feast. The Church has not arranged these things before, during, and after the feast by chance. She has arranged them beautifully, so that we may pay attention. Every year we live, she sets the scenes before us again: the same images, the same events, the same scenes. Their repetition is meant to remind us to make them our life and our lived experience, because...

death, as you know, comes without warning. You do not know when. Suddenly, within an hour, you may depart from this world and find yourself face to face with Him who suffered these things here, taught them, and left them for us. I pray that Saint Joseph the Betrothed, James the Brother of the Lord, and the Most Holy Theotokos, the mother of our Lord—who endured all this hardship and left us this moral and dogmatic teaching—may continue to intercede for us, and that we ourselves may choose to change, because God waits, but He does not forget. Amen. Three solemn events make up this great day. First, the Circumcision of our Lord Jesus Christ. Second,

the person of Basil the Great, the revealer of heavenly mysteries; and third, New Year’s Day, the so-called changing of the year. The most solemn event is the Circumcision of our Lord. Today He is eight days old, and He too fulfills the Law, according to the command God gave Abraham: that every male child should be circumcised on the eighth day. Since Christ became man, He obeys God’s command, just as in a few days we shall see Him submit to the baptism that God had commanded John the Forerunner to perform.

He humbled Himself for us, although He had no need of circumcision, because circumcision symbolized the putting away of sin, and also showed that blood was required for sin to be cut away. Circumcision caused blood to flow, thereby indicating and foretelling that sin would be severed and removed through blood—the sin that enters the world through ancestral sin and through the birth of every human being. This is why the symbolic member of the male infant was circumcised.

The man begets and the woman gives birth, as we said during the days of Christmas. And yet, although Christ, being God, had no need of this procedure, He accepted circumcision for our sake and humbled Himself, leaving us its symbolic lesson.

It teaches us how we too must think and act before God’s commandments—before the command of God. Those of you who attended church last night will have heard in the reading from Genesis that God gave this command to Abraham. Those who have the Old Testament can find these events in the fourteenth chapter of Genesis. The first and great significance of today’s feast, then, is...

once again, the humility of Jesus: that He accepted circumcision in the flesh in order to teach us how we ought to conduct ourselves. This circumcision was also a means of reconciliation with God. Today it has been replaced. We Christians are not circumcised; circumcision has been replaced by Baptism. Many today fail to notice that Christ was not asked whether He wished to be circumcised; His parents took Him to be circumcised. Likewise, eight-day-old children were not asked by their parents whether they wished to be circumcised; their parents were obliged to have it done. From the moment they were circumcised, whether as infants or adults, they became friends of God.

They could eat the Passover and partake in communion, as we were saying today. Some people now say, “Did anyone ask me before they baptized me?” And what would it cost you to renounce your Baptism? Would it cost you so much to deny your Baptism? Or are you offended because they gave you one more bath? Just as the infant then was not asked but received circumcision, and God accepted this on the child’s behalf through the parents, so today the infant who is baptized is not asked, because circumcision has been replaced by infant Baptism. If you open the Church’s Book of Prayers, you will find a service for everyone who is to be baptized, called the service of the Naming,

which takes place precisely on the eighth day. And today, at His Circumcision—at His typological baptism, as we were saying—Christ received His name. Later Christ also underwent a baptism of repentance, and He left us His own Baptism. So do not be scandalized, and know how to answer when someone says, “Did the person who baptized me ask me? I did not want to be baptized,” without rejecting him. The parent simply did what he was obliged to do. A parent also gives you Holy Communion before you understand, yet you are sanctified. He also feeds you before you understand, yet you are nourished. Precisely the same thing happens in this case. Thus, that circumcision was replaced by the infant Baptism of our Church. This is why the Church appoints the relevant passage from Holy Scripture—specifically, from Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians—to remind us of this truth.

If you listened attentively, you heard that it says Baptism replaced circumcision. We therefore have scriptural proof that circumcision was replaced by infant Baptism. This is the first and solemn event, the event that constitutes the greatest and most important part of the day. The second part concerns Basil the Great. Basil the Great came from a family of seven children, five of whom were Saints, apart from his mother and father: four sons who became Saints and one daughter, the eldest, Saint Macrina, the teacher of monasticism. It was to her that Basil the Great owed his return to Christ

and his deep cultivation of the Christian life. When Basil the Great studied in Athens, earned five qualifications, and returned home, he was not yet the man he later became. Macrina took him in hand and led him into the Christian faith. She helped him; Basil the Great owed to her his guidance into Christ and into Orthodoxy. He departed for the desert, remained there for five years, learned the Old Testament by heart, and wrote discourses on monasticism. When he returned, he became the man we know. He died at only forty-nine years of age. Yet as a bishop he accomplished the work of two hundred years, not merely

the few years he lived in this world. He left us many things. As his dismissal hymn says, he interpreted Genesis preeminently—specifically the Hexaemeron, the account of the six days of creation—up to the point at which God created the material world, but not man, since man was created last. Then, through a revelation from the Most Holy Theotokos, he was told that he would depart and that another would undertake to interpret the rest. This was done by his brother, Saint Gregory, known as Gregory of Nyssa. At the beginning of the year, this family ought to stand before us as a great example. First, a large family is blessed by God when man does not deliberately limit it. Man must not restrict the family.

If, for example, Basil’s father, also named Basil, and his mother, Emmelia, had decided to have a small family, as we do today, we would have been deprived of these five Saints. Unfortunately, this is not taken into account. We celebrate the Saint, but we do not imitate the Saint; we do not imitate his family or his parents. He is not placed at the beginning of the year at random. He is set before us as an example, as a model. We must look deeply and imitate, drawing out like a bee everything beautiful, good, and sweet. This is a family worthy of imitation, and blessed are those who choose to read about it. Our young people would not be as they are today,

nor would they think as they do or be so troubled, because Basil the Great addressed every question, both philosophical and religious, and his teaching can fill a person’s soul. In the early schools, the Hexaemeron was part of the curriculum, and the Ministry of Education distributed these books free of charge. Today young people are uninformed about matters of faith. Everything appears mysterious to them, although the questions have already been answered. Their fathers never bought them such a book; they bought only what the school prescribed and requested. Nor did the young people themselves seek out these helpful works, which are available today in simple language. Our young people in particular could learn a great deal, for they thirst and feel the need

to enter more deeply into this unknown realm. This man spoke and interpreted through the Holy Spirit. He left many things to both the Church and the State, for he was not only a man who helped the Church but one who also served the State. And yet he passes unnoticed; at most, his name is profaned, because those who turned him into a mascot for card players do not benefit from honoring the true Saint Basil. The Saint was never a card player. The Saint gave gifts to the poor—not to the wealthy, not to his male and female friends, and not to people who would later give gifts back to him, as we do. Generally speaking, most of us are completely uninformed about Basil the Great, and I believe we ought to learn much more about him,

so that we may be greatly benefited, both personally and more broadly, and may also inform others. The third part concerns the change of the year—New Year’s Day. People make a great fuss over the changing of the year. The year changes, my dear friends, but the person does not. It is absurd to make so much of the fact that we used to write ’80 and now write ’81—or that tomorrow we will write ’82, whereas before we wrote ’79. For the human person, at least, this is absurd. Man is eternal. The passing years do not affect that. Therefore, there should not be so much talk about it. But if one wishes to speak of it, one should do so wisely: reflecting on the past and taking account of the future. Yet man does not do this.

They used to make a figure of a man and display it on New Year’s morning, having set it up during the night. Viewed from one side, it showed a sullen, blackened, filthy man—a truly grotesque figure. Viewed from the other side, because it had two faces, it showed a very handsome young man, pleasing to behold. In this way they depicted the departing year as burdened and blackened, while imagining that they were passing into a favorable and happy year, as we say—a year filled only with flowers, without mourning, sorrow, affliction, or adversity. That is how they portrayed it. But how did we portray ourselves tonight?

Not here, but in the cities, where people claim to live somewhat differently, they put on a similar display. At twelve o’clock they turned off the lights and left everything dark and black. Then they heard “zero-one” announced on the radio and turned the lights on again. They left behind a black page and supposedly passed into a joyful state of affairs. But it is falsehood, deception, deceit, absurdity, and foolishness. The very same person, with the same filth, weaknesses, sins, and wretched condition, remains exactly the same person at one minute past twelve as he was at twelve. Nothing has changed.

If 1980 became 1981, that did not change the person. What matters is for the person to change, for a new person to emerge—clean, repentant, and with a different outlook. The fact that I was with my girlfriend at midnight and was still with her at one minute past midnight brought me no happiness. At midnight I was gambling, and at one minute past midnight I was still gambling; nothing changed for me. At night I was a swindler, and in the morning I am still a thief; nothing changed for me. At night I was a liar, and in the morning I continue to lie; nothing changed for me. What, then, did time accomplish? What did the New Year create? What did all those wishes for “many years” accomplish? What is the point, unless a person takes care to make good use of that dark dividing line? All who engage in business

close their books in this way, especially the large stores. Once a year, on a certain day, they draw up a balance sheet. The employees work inside, counting and calculating, adding up the gains and the losses, to see how things went, what happened, and whether it is worthwhile to continue. If merchants dealing in sugar and rice, meat and shoes, clothing and watches do these things, should not a person with an immortal soul also draw up a balance sheet? How did his soul fare during 1980, and what condition is it in now, as he is about to enter 1981—if the goodness and longsuffering of God grant him that opportunity? I do not know how many people did this.

From my own small personal observation, I believe that not even one person in a million thought of entering the New Year clean and changed, mindful of the goodness and longsuffering of God, who added the year 1980 to their lives and brought them into the new year. I do not know. We like to call ourselves educated, sensible, accomplished, intelligent, even shrewd, as we are in every other matter; yet here, unfortunately, we fall short. And if you think there is something we failed to do last year that we ought to do this year, let each of us attend to it. God is good and waits for us, giving us the opportunity to return and set right what we had left unresolved.

The present... It is a bridge joining the past to the future. In reality, the present does not exist. It is so fine, like an imaginary line, as we might say in human terms, separating the past from the future. Whatever I say is already in the past, and whatever I am going to say lies in the future. Whether I will actually say it, I do not know. This is why a person must live in fear and reverence, for he stands between heaven and earth, precisely where Christ stood in order to unite what is below with what is above. He hangs suspended and cannot say, “I will do this.”

Who told you that you will do it? The power goes out, and you will do nothing. You remain suspended in between, like an elevator when the electricity is cut off or a fuse blows. That is how you will remain there, suspended, without having time to accomplish anything.

You will be able neither to go down nor to go up. And yet man, with all his achievements—even after reaching the moon—has failed to grasp this. Although God in His goodness adds years to his life so that he may change, man does not change. He changes clothes, habits, fashions, seasonings, and recipes, but his soul does not change. Few people make use of the time granted by the goodness and longsuffering of God. My beloved, it is the love of God that should fill us with fear and awe; we should not fear only the justice of God. No, God will not drown us in a sea of water; He will drown us in a sea of oil. It is His mercy that will overwhelm us. Therefore, whether as individuals

responsible for ourselves, or as people who have others around us depending on us, let us take heed for that immortal treasure called the soul. Even if everything else is put in order and we receive applause for everything, if we lose our soul—or the souls of those who depend on us—it would have been better for us not to have been born. The awards and certificates we give ourselves, or that others give us, are absurd. It is utterly foolish to seek approval from the world, whose powerful current sweeps us away. “But look at the world! What will the world say? You see, we live in the world.” Yes, we live in the world, but we are going to stand before Christ—Christ Crucified,

Christ the Nazarene, who drank the cup to its very dregs—and Christ will demand an account from us. He does not ask for the money we offer Him. He does not ask for our candles, whose wax comes from His bees. He does not ask for our oil, which comes from His olive trees. He asks us to surrender our sins. Many of us entered the New Year and shamelessly accepted wishes for “many years.” Why? So that we may keep doing the same things and remain exactly as we are? This is utterly absurd, if what I am saying is truly happening—and I pray that it is not. Yet I am obliged to sound the alarm: it is utterly absurd to imagine that Christ will continue to let us mock Him. No; we are left without excuse. “The word that goes forth from My divine mouth,” God says through Isaiah in 55:11, “shall not return empty.” It will not return void: it will bring either salvation or condemnation.

My beloved, may all these words prove irrelevant to us and find no fault in us; may we already have done what is beneficial for our own souls. But if we have not, let us take care to do it, making good use of the goodness and longsuffering shown in this year of the Lord, which He has graciously added to our lives. Amen.

Έφτιαχναν ένα ομοίωμα ανθρώπου και το παρουσίαζαν σήμερα το πρωί. Κατά τη νύχτα το έστηναν. Αν πήγαινες από το ένα μέρος να το δεις, έβλεπες έναν κατσούφη, έναν μαύρον, έναν λερωμένον, ένα έκτρωμα πραγματικό. Αν πήγαινες από το άλλο μέρος να το ιδείς, γιατί ήταν double face, έβλεπες έναν ωραιότατο νέο, πολύ ευειδή, που σου προκαλούσε την ευχαρίστηση να τον βλέπεις. Παρουσίαζαν τον χρόνο που φεύγει, τον φορτωμένο, τον μαύρο, και να περάσουν σε έναν χρόνο ευνοϊκό, σε έναν χρόνο ευτυχισμένο, όπως λέμε εμείς, σε έναν χρόνο μόνο με λουλούδια, να μην έχει πένθος, να μην έχει στενοχώριες, να μην έχει θλίψεις, να μην έχει αντιξοότητες. Έτσι αυτοί παρομοίαζαν. Εμείς πώς παρομοιάσαμε τον εαυτό μας απόψε;
