Summary
The Church prepares for Christmas by presenting the ancestors, prophecies, and Old Testament types that reveal how Christ entered human history. Christ descends from David’s royal line through the Theotokos, explaining the journey to Bethlehem and fulfilling expectations concerning the Son of David and root of Jesse. Joseph’s righteousness, protective betrothal to Mary, and response to angelic revelation illustrate both God’s providence and the moral duty not to enable sin under the guise of compassion.

At this same point, as Christmas draws near, last Sunday was the Sunday known as the Sunday of the Forefathers, and the coming Sunday is the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ. The Church frames every great event with a Sunday before it and a Sunday after it. On the Sunday before, we hear the prophecies and types that foreshadow the Great Feast. In the middle comes the feast itself, with the event it presents, and afterward comes the moral teaching.
These are the events surrounding the Great Feast. Just as we have the Sunday before Theophany, the Sunday after Theophany, and Theophany itself, and as we have the Sunday before the Exaltation of the Precious Cross, the Sunday after the Exaltation, and the feast of the Exaltation of the Precious Cross itself, so it is now with Christmas. On the Sunday before Christmas, the Church presents the genealogy of Christ: in a sense, a record of all those people who came before Him, from whom God took flesh through the person of our Most Holy Theotokos.
If we examine it, we find a succession of persons through whom, so to speak, God passed in order to become man. Cain, for example, murdered Abel. Our Christ does not descend through the line of Cain, but through the line of Seth, another son of Adam. From that line, as the generations descend, comes Abraham; and from there the line continues until it reaches Joseph the Betrothed, who is presented as Mary's husband. It has followed a particular course.
Luke records most of this, because in the Gospel there are two genealogical trees of Jesus. One presents Him as man and is written by the Evangelist Matthew, who begins His genealogy with Abraham. The other is given by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Luke takes Him when He appears at thirty—about thirty years old—to begin His public ministry, and traces His genealogy backward, as we might say. While Matthew descends from Abraham and comes down to Joseph the Betrothed, Luke takes Joseph and, beginning when Jesus is about thirty years old, goes backward until he reaches ‘Seth, Adam, God,’ and presents Him in this way.
He who is twofold in nature, but not in hypostasis—as our Church says, having two natures but one hypostasis, one person—has two genealogical trees. As man, His genealogy descends; as God, it ascends again. Yet it is one genealogy. It begins with Abraham and descends to Joseph the Betrothed; then from there it ascends and reveals that this Son of Mary was not only the Only-Begotten of His mother, but also the Only-Begotten of the Father. He is also God. Therefore, at the beginning of these days, in order to prepare the people, the Church presents the genealogical tree and shows how Christ came into the world. In our homes, we put up Christmas trees.
But this is the genealogical Christmas tree; and if anyone wishes to plant it and shake it, he will discover that its roots reach into Paradise. For this reason, it was God Himself who first spoke in Paradise about Christ's coming into the world. Now those prophecies are simply being fulfilled—prophecies made by the Holy Spirit long ago, beginning when there were only two human beings in Paradise. From that time onward, there was already talk of Christ coming into the world. Paul speaks of this in his own way, in the epistle reading appointed for Christmas night.
‘When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive adoption as sons.’ When the fullness of time had come—from what point did God begin counting? From the moment He first said it. When He had before Him in Eden Satan, Eve, and Adam, He spoke certain words to them. He threatened Satan with the offspring of the woman, who would one day crush his head. What He said there at that time is being fulfilled now. The reckoning begins from that moment, and the promise is fulfilled in the person of Jesus.
Our Christ did not begin His history only when He came into the world. He has a prehistory, because He is not only man; He is also God. John says in one passage, ‘He who comes after me has come before me.’ What does this mean?
If He comes after you, how can He be before you? He is not merely a man who will come six months after me; He is also God, and as God He is before me. This is the dogmatic meaning of John's words. Yes, He will come six months after me. When His mother conceives Him...
I am already six months old in my mother's womb. Yet He is before me, even though He comes later, because He is also God. I am simply the son of Zacharias and Elizabeth. He is the Son of Mary alone, and His Father is God. For Christ is the Son of Man, not the son of two human parents. I, the child of Athanasios and Asimo, am registered as such, just as Nikolaos and Eleni are recorded as my parents. This is not so with Christ. According to His humanity, Christ has a mother but no father. ‘Without a father sowing,’ says Saint Ignatius the God-bearer. And as God, He has a Father but no mother. Therefore, He is called fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy.
There was a type foreshadowing this in the Old Testament: Melchizedek. Those of you who read Genesis will have found, in its fourteenth chapter, an account of a man named Melchizedek, who is presented as greater than Abraham. When Abraham returned from his victory, after freeing his nephew Lot and bringing back spoils, he gave a tithe to Melchizedek and, more particularly, offered him bread and wine. In this way Melchizedek is presented as a high priest, whose priesthood is connected with bread and wine, which are the Body and Blood of Christ. And he...
At that time, Scripture nowhere says that Melchizedek was born. No one recounts his lineage, saying that he was the child of this person or that person, or that he was born in a particular year. Nothing is mentioned. Nor does it say that he died. He appears suddenly in the middle of the account, fulfills a role, and disappears. We are told neither where he came from nor who his ancestors were. He has neither beginning nor end, and in this he was a type foreshadowing Christ. This is precisely why Christ is called fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy: fatherless according to His humanity and motherless according to His divinity. As man, He had the Theotokos as His mother, but He had no human father. Joseph is His supposed father. He is not His father; Joseph did not beget Him.
The Gospel itself states that Joseph did not beget Him. So we say that Christ's history does not begin on the day He came into the world. There is a prehistory; His history precedes His coming. And Christ is not the only one whose history precedes his appearance in the world—that is, who is already known in sacred history before coming into the world. Yet He is the only person whose coming we know beforehand: we know when He will come, where He will come, and how He will come. Christ has this threefold testimony to His name: the how, the where, and the when. We do not have this. My history is written from the day I am born until the day I die. There is no earlier history for me, nor for any other human being. There is only the history of our earthly life.
The Holy Spirit has a history that precedes His manifestation; the Most Holy Virgin has a history that precedes her appearance; the Holy Forerunner has a history that precedes his coming; and the Precious Cross also has such a history. Thousands of years beforehand, we know that they will come and what role they will fulfill. The first person, therefore, whose history precedes His coming is Christ.
Thus, on this Sunday before Christmas, the first subject discussed is the genealogical tree from which Christ descends according to His humanity. Christ is most often called the Son of David. He is also said to come from the root of Jesse. I do not know whether you know who Jesse is. Jesse is the father of David. If you read the Books of Kingdoms in the Old Testament, you will find the house of David, and from there you will understand why Christ came to be born in Bethlehem. His mother belonged to the line of David and was of royal descent, as was Joseph the Betrothed...
He too was of the royal line of David. David, from whom Jesus descends according to His humanity, was from Bethlehem, and Joseph and Mary belonged to his line. Therefore, in accordance with the decree that had been issued, they went to be registered in the place associated with their ancestry. Since they belonged to the house and lineage of David, they went to Bethlehem. While they were there, the days were fulfilled for her to give birth, and she gave birth there. This is why the Most Holy Theotokos came from that line, that family, that royal genealogical tree; and Joseph the Betrothed came from the same lineage. That is why they went to Bethlehem and were registered there, as I told you. On the coming Sunday, however, we shall hear all this in a reading.
It begins with Abraham and descends from there. Abraham appears, we might say, as the father of the nations, the father of all, and so the genealogy begins with him. The Apostle and Evangelist Luke also speaks of the remaining generations, but traces them backward.
It begins as follows, as you know and as we shall hear: ‘The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.’ One might interpret this as the record of Christ's descending genealogy. It continues: ‘Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar.’ It then continues through approximately forty-two generations, until it reaches Joseph, the supposed husband of Mary, from whom Christ was born.
What we usually fail to notice...
If we have never paid attention to it, is this: Scripture says, ‘Abraham begot Isaac’; it does not say that Sarah begot him. Here it presents the men as begetting, and that is indeed how it is. The man begets, while the woman gives birth. Life is in the seed, not in the woman's ovum; life is in the man's seed. The ovum serves as soil, like a flowerpot. The woman is sown; she is the field, and she brings forth whatever is sown in her. This is why some of our men who demand that their wives give them a child of a particular sex deserve a sound thrashing. What you sowed is what I bring you. You sowed a boy, and I bring you a boy. You sowed a girl, and I bring you a girl.
“I form the child; you supplied the seed.” I know of a couple who abandoned the woman at the maternity hospital because she had not borne the kind of child they wanted. That is utterly outrageous. And yet people do not understand that the man is the cause of generation and the source of life, while the woman receives the seed and brings that seed into being. If they knew Holy Scripture, they would see clearly that the man begets and the woman gives birth. It says, “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, Jacob begot Judah,” and so forth. The genealogy continues downward through three sets of fourteen generations until it reaches the words, “Matthan begot Jacob.”
“And Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.” When the genealogy reaches those who outwardly appear to be Christ’s parents, it does not say “of whom,” referring, for example, to Joseph; it says, “of whom Christ was born,” referring to Mary. Until this point, the men were begetting; now, here, the woman gives birth. Here is the wonder: everything changes. Someone may ask, “Why could Christ not have been born from a man? Why could a man not have supplied the seed?” Because then He too would have been a fallen human being, a man bearing ancestral sin upon his shoulders. He would not have been the Savior. He could not have saved anyone, since He could not even have saved Himself. He too would have been in need...
...of salvation. This is why Saint Gregory Palamas says so beautifully: “If Christ had been born of the flesh, of the will of man, and of blood, He would not have been the New Man, free from sin, and the Savior of sinners.” He is not Himself a sinner, for according to David, all who come into the world are born under sin: “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” Who can escape this? No one escapes it. Even the seed of Abraham was sinful; it carried death within it. We spoke about this here on another occasion, and I reminded you of examples from nature. For instance, the seed of an olive tree—the pit of a fine olive...
...if planted, will produce a wild olive tree, and it will need to be grafted. So it is with human seed. Even the seed of the holiest person bears sin, so that a person does not come into the world holy by nature but becomes holy and must desire to become holy through Christ. Take the seed of an orange and plant it. Do you know what it will produce? A bitter-orange tree, which will need grafting. So it is with the seed of any man—even Abraham, for example, whom we regard, in a certain sense, as the holiest man in Holy Scripture. We speak of being “in the bosom of Abraham,” and yet even his seed needed grafting. This is precisely why Christ is not born of the seed of man.
He is born neither of the will of woman nor of blood, but of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. Let me give you another example. Many Christ-loving women bake prosphora, yet they do not go to a bakery to obtain yeast for them. Where, then, do they find their leaven? They receive even this from God. How? A woman takes a little basil or a flower from the Cross. At home she mixes flour and water in a bowl and lays the basil upon it. By evening she sees it working and smells it. She feeds it again, and it rises until it spills over. She has taken no manufactured ingredient; she has asked for it from heaven. And God...
...gives it life, causing yeast to form within it. It becomes leaven, and then she turns all the flour bought from the grocer into prosphora and brings them to the Church. Such is the power of the Holy Spirit. As the Gospel goes on to tell us, Joseph found himself in great difficulty when he saw that the Most Holy Theotokos was pregnant, and heaven intervened. I will read it to you shortly. The angel told him: “Things are not as you suppose. This is not an illicit union; there is no sin or immorality here. That which is begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit.” It says “in her,” not “from her”—that which was begotten there within her. For a woman to give birth, for example...
...someone else must first beget life within her, and then the woman brings it forth for us. If another does not beget life within her, the woman does not give birth. So it is here as well. For Christ to be the Savior, His conception had to take place outside the ordinary manner of conception, which could not escape death. When phylloxera strikes an area, what do people do? As you have seen, they bring in vine cuttings from abroad for the vineyards afflicted by phylloxera. The cutting must come from elsewhere and be unaffected, so that the vineyard may be preserved. So it is here. Until the genealogy reached Joseph, the man regarded as Mary’s husband, the men had begotten their descendants. But now it says, “Joseph, the man regarded as Mary’s husband, of whom Christ was born.”
Christ was born not “of whom,” referring to Joseph, but “of whom,” referring to Mary. The Evangelist explains this further: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows.” How was it? “After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” Something altogether different happened here. It did not take place as human conception ordinarily does. They had no relations at all. That is what “before” means here: without their having relations, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit. We must not expect the order of nature: “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.”
The divine John Chrysostom puts it succinctly: where God is—where God enters into the matter—there is no place for the question “How?” How will this happen? God is at work, and you ask how it will happen? What is impossible for God? The Most Holy Theotokos herself faced this when the angel told her all that was to occur, and she said, “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” The angel did not know how to explain the manner in which it would happen, but he told her what would happen. How it would happen is one thing; what would happen is another. “I know how to tell you what will happen,” he said. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” He will accomplish it all. How He will do it, I do not know, for I am not God.
“I was not sent to tell you how it will happen. I was sent to tell you what will happen—if you are willing.” For if the Theotokos had not been willing, her will would not have been violated. This is why the holy angel remained with her and spoke to her at length, until she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Then, as soon as she consented—as soon as she placed her signature beneath it and said, “I accept”—the angel departed, because she had already conceived. It was later shown that she had indeed conceived, for she set out for the hill country of Judah. When she came to Elizabeth, Elizabeth told her what had happened: that she was pregnant, and she called her “the mother of my Lord.” “But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” And when the Most Holy Theotokos asked, in effect, “How did you know that I am the mother of your Lord?” Elizabeth replied that...
“When I heard your greeting with my ears—when we embraced—the babe leaped for joy in my womb.” Elizabeth was carrying John, who was six months old in her womb, and John, in a certain manner, greeted both the mother of his Lord outside the womb and the Lord who was within her. When the Most Holy Theotokos heard this, she spoke the words that form what we call the Ninth Ode: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,” together with the rest of the Ninth Ode. Unfortunately, as you know, these things pass unnoticed. This is why many are scandalized when they hear of the seedless conception and of these supernatural events.
It had to happen this way, because otherwise there would have been no Savior. He would have been an ordinary man who also needed salvation—someone to heal his own sickness. “So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, from David until the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon until Christ fourteen generations.” Yet if they are counted here, they do not total forty-two; there are fewer. What happened is this: when the people were taken captive to Babylon, they were unable to preserve an unbroken record of the generations, just as we lost archives, civil records, and other documents during the Occupation...
...and afterward reconstructed lists and records. Something similar happened there. This is precisely why the generations do not come to exactly fourteen, fourteen, and fourteen; two or three are missing from the list. This does not mean that Holy Scripture records a falsehood. The essential point is that Christ truly descends from the lineage of David. That is what matters. The Jews expected Him to come from the tribe of Judah and, above all, from the line of David. This is why everyone continually cried out to Him, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us.” “Now the birth of Jesus took place in this manner,” says the Evangelist.
“After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph”—the mother of Jesus. Notice what it calls her already. She has not yet given birth, yet it already calls her His mother. Keep in mind that it does not ordinarily call her Joseph’s wife. If the Evangelist sometimes has to call her his wife, and if the angel later says, “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife,” it is because this is how matters appeared to the world and how they needed to appear. Many people do not realize that if the Most Holy Theotokos had had no man beside her and appeared pregnant without a husband, she would have been stoned. According to the Law, a woman accused of adultery was to be stoned. This is why...
...by divine economy, this elder, this chaste man, was given to stand beside her, so that the world would believe she had someone with her, even if he was advanced in years. For if she had appeared pregnant, unmarried, and without a husband, the Law required that she be stoned. Moreover, this young maiden needed a chaste man beside her during the trials that lay ahead. God, being God, knew that she would face hardship. He knew that she would be persecuted and that she would flee into Egypt. As proof, He had written of it beforehand: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” He knew all this. He even knew what would happen when she went to Egypt. Open the nineteenth chapter of Isaiah...
...written eight hundred and fifty years before Christ, and see what it says would take place there...
...when the Most Holy Theotokos went into Egypt with Christ. All the idols of Egypt would fall and be shattered. This is why the canon of the Akathist Hymn calls the Most Holy Theotokos “the light cloud bearing Him who is above the heavens into Egypt.” These are the events that, through the Holy Spirit, Isaiah saw...
...and recorded eight hundred and fifty years before Christ.
So we read here: “After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” Joseph, of course, did not know this. “Then Joseph her husband”—this is how he appeared to the world as her husband, and this is how Matthew describes him—“being righteous, and not wanting to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.” In other words: “This child is not mine; it is not from me. I ought to hand her over for judgment, and outside they will stone her.” This itself proves that he had not taken her as his wife. It also proves that the Most Holy Theotokos had not conceived the child by Joseph.
The proof is that, because he feared God, Joseph could not conceal what he thought was an illicit union by keeping in his house a pregnant woman whom he believed to be sinful—“suspecting a secret union,” as the Akathist Hymn says. Because he was righteous, he could not hide it, keep her with him, or cover it up, as people say. So he resolved “to put her away secretly”: not to bring her out and expose her to public disgrace, but to take her quietly to some distant place and leave her there. If she managed to survive and no one demanded to know where her husband was or how she came to have the child, he would have saved her. But if they did question her, she would be held guilty. “I cannot keep her in my house and conceal this.” There is much here to instruct us...
This has much to teach us, especially in our own day, when, as you know, fornication and adultery have risen to the clouds. And if this corruption has increased so greatly, if I may put it that way, it is because some of us act like a greenhouse for it: we shelter people and cover for them; we handle their correspondence and telephone calls; we give them our rooms and give them money; we lie to their husbands or wives, or to their parents, and cover for them. If this corrupt environment did not exist—not only on the part of those who commit these acts, but also on the part of us who tolerate them—
out of supposed sympathy, supposed friendship, or the claim that we are showing love and standing by them, then this abomination, this sin, whether it is called fornication or adultery, would not be completely eradicated, but it would at least be restrained. If today adultery has reached eighty percent—for it now spreads across whole cities, on one side or the other—and if fornication and premarital relations have reached ninety-nine percent, this is due partly to ignorance, but above all to people covering for one another, beginning at school. It is within the school that corruption and destruction begin. There, boys cover for one another, and girls cover for one another. And they say that anyone who reports it is a snitch
and is treated as an outcast, while the one who covers it up is regarded as an angel of light. They do not know, because they were never taught, what responsibility they bear or what account God will require of them for covering up such a situation. Must you go out, raise a banner, and start shouting? No. But you must never agree to play that role. And that is enough: I will not agree; I will not help you down that slope; I will not conceal your perversion. When people find everything made convenient for them, they proceed more readily. We should say what needs to be said in order to prevent the evil before it happens. But if I cannot prevent it, I will not make it easy for you.
What is written in the final two verses of the fifteenth chapter of the Wisdom of Sirach? “He commanded no one to act wickedly, nor did He give anyone license to sin.” He did not tell anyone to act impiously, it says, nor did He permit anyone to sin. Yet through this supposed kindness and love for our fellow human beings, we help them to do precisely that. We will be called to account. For, as I said, if we did not cover these things up, it would be harder for a person to go so far. Of course, we have now reached the point where, very soon, we will even have laws allowing every woman to have her boyfriend in her room and every man to have his girlfriend in his. You see? A law is being prepared so that married couples may live separately,
so that they need not share the same home and each may sleep in a separate apartment. Then there will be no need to recall Joseph or anyone else. Everything will be permitted. But that is another matter. Since we know what lies ahead of us, we have a duty to take a stand and help as much as we can—not only by positive action, but often by refusing to cooperate. At this point we will accomplish nothing more than placing limits on sin. We will not eradicate it, because Satan’s devices are so numerous, and human cunning and corruption are so great, that they overcome all such barriers. But if we restrain it to some degree, people will no longer find it so easy to rely on certain others to shelter and cover for them, producing the present outbreak of these two sins, fornication and adultery. This is what we are taught here.
Joseph is righteous; he fears God. How can I cover up wrongdoing and then expect God to cover me? If I conceal lawlessness, God will expose me. I must stand up for what is right and concern myself with what is right, so that the righteous God may shelter and protect me in my need and in my difficult hour. As a human being, Joseph interpreted the situation as something arising from evil, believing that her pregnancy was the result of sin. For you know what position Joseph found himself in at that moment. When the Most Holy Theotokos was left alone after the Archangel departed, she considered in human terms what had happened: whether she had truly conceived without a man. And it seemed supernatural to her.
She had retained certain words spoken by the Angel: that her kinswoman was in her sixth month. She understood that much. When the Angel wished to show her that all things are possible for God, he offered this proof: her kinswoman, an elderly woman, was already six months pregnant. She held on to this and, lacking the patient endurance to wait until the woman’s condition became evident—for that requires a certain amount of time—she departed in haste and went into the hill country of Judah to see for herself. She did not already know that the elderly Elizabeth was pregnant. Where would she have heard it, on the radio or seen it on television? How could she have known? Could they exchange letters across a hundred and fifty kilometres? In human terms, she had to go there herself.
She remained there, and it was revealed that Elizabeth truly was six months pregnant and that the Most Holy Theotokos herself was also pregnant, for Elizabeth greeted her as “the mother of my Lord coming to me.” She stayed with Elizabeth for three months. When those three months had passed and the time approached for the elderly Elizabeth to give birth, the Most Holy Theotokos departed and returned home. When she came back—a young girl of fourteen, perhaps slender as well, and now three months pregnant—her condition was plainly visible, and they immediately discovered that she was pregnant. Something must have happened while she was away. Of course, she gave her explanation and insisted that she was pure, that she had done nothing, and told them what had occurred. But who could understand such things? How could they comprehend conception by the Holy Spirit and such supernatural events? This is why Joseph found himself at an impasse.
I told you, when we were speaking about the Cross, what final means the Most Holy Theotokos used in an effort to persuade both Joseph and the other children. Those described as the brothers of our Lord were Joseph’s nephews, the children of Cleopas. There were about six of them—four boys and two girls—and they were already grown. All these people around her caused the Most Holy Theotokos pain. “Are you now telling us that there is some new way of conceiving a child? How can such things happen?” When every other effort failed, she made the sign of the Precious Cross and said: “By the features written upon my face, by Him who is within my womb, and by the angels at my right and my left, testimony will be given.” I can say nothing more to you about it. In any event, none of this persuaded them. But then Heaven intervened.
Joseph was troubled within himself: “How can I keep her?” and so forth, while at the same time searching for some way forward. Then the passage says: “But while he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife.’” There, you may say, it calls her his wife. How, then, can you tell me she was only betrothed to him? Yes, but it also says here, “Joseph, son of David.” Was Joseph literally David’s son? No, he was his descendant. Why do you interpret one expression literally in order to blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos and reject the divinity of Jesus, while accepting that Joseph is called David’s son even though David lived many generations before him?
So one expression is supposedly literal and the other is not. Just as you take the latter figuratively and say that Joseph was a descendant of David—for when you open Holy Scripture, you see fourteen generations from Abraham to Jesse of Bethlehem, and another fourteen from Jesse, who begot David, to the Babylonian exile, making a difference of twenty-eight generations—so take care, and open Luke. There you will see that Joseph was regarded as Christ’s father. He was never Christ’s actual father. It was the Holy Spirit who formed Christ within the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. “Therefore, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her”
—that which was begotten within her—“is of the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit formed Him within her. “She shall bear a son”; it does not say, “A son will be born to you.” It says simply that she will bear a son, not a daughter. The Angel knows beforehand what is within the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos, whereas science, as you know, has not yet managed to distinguish the sex of a child within its mother’s womb. In any event: “She shall bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus.” That is the name you will give Him: Jesus. Jesus is a Hebrew word meaning Savior; Christ is His title. Whom will this Jesus save? What will He save?
“His people.” But He has not yet been born, and already He has a people? “He will save His people from their sins.” Here they speak of One who is to be born, who has not yet been born, and yet He is presented as having a people. He was God; He was not only the son of Mary, but also God. That is why He had a people. “She shall bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” This Jesus will save the people from their sins. Outside Jesus, therefore, no human being can be saved. He is the Savior of all people, from Adam to the final person at the consummation of the ages. The passage then continues to strengthen Joseph,
not only through the information given to him, but also through Holy Scripture. It says to him: “All this took place”—what is happening now, in which you are serving this miracle of a young woman pregnant without a man—“that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled.” This matter had already been spoken of and written down. For I told you earlier that three distinct things are revealed concerning Jesus: where He would be born, how He would be born, and when He would be born. Three arrows pointing to Him. He would be born in Bethlehem, as it is written: “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.” This was the answer given when the Magi inquired: “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” Not, “Where will He be born?” but, “Where is He who has been born?” For us, He has been born. Though you here in Judea know nothing of it and it makes no difference to you, for us He has been born. Thus, through the prophet Micah, we know where He would be born. Through the prophet Isaiah, we know how He would be born: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel.” He would be born of a virgin. The Archangel now draws upon this prophecy and tells Joseph: “What is happening to you now was written beforehand: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,’”
“which is translated, ‘God with us.’” And there is a third arrow: when He would be born. In the prophecy—not the parable—of the seventy weeks recorded by Daniel, it is revealed when Christ would come. It would be 483 years after the decree to rebuild the Temple of Solomon, which had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar.
So we are given the when and the where: when, after 483 years; where, in Bethlehem; and also that He would be born of a virgin. Three things. And now, I repeat, the Archangel draws from Holy Scripture and tells Joseph: “What is happening to you was written beforehand: a virgin shall give birth.” She tells you that she has known no man; do you still not believe her? Take care, then, for the matter is not as you suppose. On the basis of this information—both the Angel’s spoken message to Joseph and the witness of Holy Scripture in Isaiah 7:14—Joseph was calmed and put at peace, and the matter troubled him no longer. That is why the passage goes on to say the following.
Joseph awoke from sleep and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. He had perhaps already distanced himself from her in some way. Through his behavior he may have shown that he was against her and that she would face consequences from him, or something of that kind. But when he received this revelation and Heaven intervened before he acted, he came to himself. “And he took his wife, and did not know her until she had borne her firstborn Son.” This phrase, “he did not know her,” again becomes a stumbling block for many, because it appears to suggest that afterward he did know her. Until she gave birth, the passage says, he did not know her.
They conclude that he knew her afterward. And they combine this with another word that follows: “He did not know her until she had borne her firstborn Son, and he called His name Jesus.” On the basis of the word “firstborn,” which they suppose implies a second-born child, and on the basis of “he did not know her until,” many married people, Protestants, and even some among us are scandalized. They say: “If He is called firstborn, there must also have been a second-born child. And if it says ‘until,’ then after that point the situation must have changed, and Joseph surely knew her.” Yet neither expression has the meaning it seems to have at first sight, though some spiritually weak people interpret them in this way.
I want you, therefore, to understand this: when it says, “He did not know her until she had given birth,” this is not evidence that he knew her afterward. The word has no reference whatsoever to what happened later. He did not know his wife until she had borne her firstborn Son; he did not know her. But He is called the firstborn because of His birth. Yes, He is the first child. “Firstborn” means the first child who opens the womb. It does not mean that there must also be a second, third, and fourth child. I have one child, Nektarios. What is Nektarios? Is he my firstborn? Yes. Is he my only-begotten son? Yes. He is both firstborn and only-begotten. Must there be other children for him to be called firstborn? The firstborn is the one who first opens the womb.
The Lord was the first to open the womb of the Theotokos. We also speak of the “first-formed” man. Who is the first-formed? Adam. Who, then, is the second-formed in the same manner as Adam? No one. There is no second-formed man. Does calling Adam “first-formed” require there to be a second-formed? Eve came forth from Adam’s side. She was not made in the same manner; she was not fashioned directly by the hands of God from the beginning. The Apostle says: “Reject a heretical man after a first and second admonition.” After a first and a second; it does not say after one and after two, nor after the first and the second, but after a first and a second. How many interpretations are you going to invent? Besides, if the Most Holy Theotokos had borne other children afterward,
If the Most Holy Theotokos had borne other children afterward, would Christ, from the Cross, have entrusted her to John to care for her? And would John have taken her in if there had been four sons and two daughters? If those called His brothers and sisters—six children in all—had truly been her children, would John have taken her? Would the Most Holy Theotokos have gone with him, and would her children have let her go? Such claims are quite absurd. That is not the meaning of these passages. These are the texts we shall hear later, which tell us how events unfolded up to the birth of Christ. When we go to the Church in the morning, we shall find Him already born. We shall take the place of the shepherds and go to worship Him. That is why we go to the Church early on Christmas morning: we take the place of the shepherds. There is only one thing I would add: let us not go burdened with sins. Let us go in repentance, having made our confession, so that we may celebrate Christmas rightly. Let there be no thorns in our souls.
The thornbush beside the manger where He was born was enough; let Him not find thorns in us now as well. This is my wish for you, and this is what I had to say, as much as this evening allowed me.

Ο Χριστός μας δεν άρχισε να γράφει ιστορία από τότε που ήρθε στον κόσμο. Έχει προϊστορία. Διότι δεν είναι μόνον άνθρωπος, είναι και Θεός. Ο Ιωάννης λέει σε μια στροφή: «Ο οπίσω μου ερχόμενος έμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν». Τι είναι αυτό;
Τώρα αυτός έχει μέσα, πώς θα την κρατήσω και λοιπά, μα ταυτοχρόνως ψάχνει να βρει τρόπο. Τότε αναφέρει εδώ: «Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐνθυμηθέντος, ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος Κυρίου κατ' ὄναρ ἐφάνη αὐτῷ λέγων· Ἰωσὴφ υἱὸς Δαβίδ, μὴ φοβηθῇς παραλαβεῖν Μαριὰμ τὴν γυναῖκά σου». Να, το λέει, λέει η γυναίκα του εδώ. Πώς μου λες εσύ ότι είναι μνηστή του; Ναι, αλλά λέει και εδώ «Ιωσήφ υἱός Δαβίδ». Ο Ιωσήφ είναι υιός του Δαβίδ; Είναι απόγονος. Πώς το ένα το ερμηνεύεις κατά γράμμα για να βλασφημήσεις την Παναγία και να απορρίψεις τη θεότητα του Ιησού, και το άλλο το δέχεσαι ότι ο Ιωσήφ, παρότι είναι 28 γενεές πίσω, πίσω πολύ ο Δαβίδ;
που εγεννήθη μέσα της, «ἐκ Πνεύματός ἐστιν Ἁγίου». Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον το έφτιαξε μέσα της. «Τέξεται δὲ υἱόν», όχι «τέξεις» εσύ, σε σένα θα γεννηθεί. «Τέξεται» γενικά, θα γεννήσει υιό, όχι θυγατέρα. Ξέρει προκαταβολικώς ο Άγγελος τι είναι μέσα στην κοιλιά της Παναγίας, που μέχρι σήμερα, όπως ξέρετε, η επιστήμη δεν έχει κατορθώσει να διακρίνει τα γένη μέσα στην κοιλιά της μητέρας. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, «τέξεται δὲ υἱὸν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν». Έτσι θα το ονοματίσεις, Ιησούν. Ιησούς είναι εβραϊκή λέξη που ερμηνεύεται Σωτήρ, Χριστός. Αυτός θα σώσει ποιον, ο Ιησούς; Τι θα σώσει;
