Summary
The Triodion uses the parables of the Publican and the Pharisee and the Prodigal Son to teach that humility and repentance, rather than confidence in good works, open the way to salvation. Great Lent is described as a disciplined season of fasting, prayer, and participation in the Presanctified Liturgy, with allowances for illness because fasting is meant to conquer passions rather than harm the body. The example of Mary of Egypt proclaims that no sinner is beyond salvation when genuine repentance leads through Christ’s Passion to the joy of the Resurrection.

In our recent talks, we spoke about certain parables told by Christ, so that through the lessons contained in them He might help us understand, in a more practical way, the path to our salvation.
If I remember correctly, we discussed three parables here: the Parable of the Ten Thousand Talents, the Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast, and the Parable of the Talents. And this evening we shall speak about another parable, one that belongs to this present season. You know, a new season has begun—
a season of great interest for our Church. It is the season known as the Triodion. On the first Sunday of this season, we heard a parable that fits very well into our series on the parables: the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee. And this coming Sunday the Church again presents us with another parable. Since we are speaking about parables, this gives us the opportunity to be timely and to speak about both of them. This evening, of course, I shall relate the two to one another. I shall not discuss each separately, but say a little about the one and a little about the other.
For one completes the other. The persons in the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee correspond to those in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. I do not know whether there are some among us who do not properly understand the meaning of this season, so let me first say a few words about it. This is the finest season in the life of our Church, because it gives us the opportunity to learn certain things: to learn the path to salvation, the purpose for which Christ came into the world, what awaits us following His coming, and what He left behind for us so that—
we may live here in this world. This season is better known among worldly people than among the religious. Many Christians did not know yesterday that the Triodion was beginning, but worldly people knew it. They had already prepared for their revelries, their wild celebrations, and their sins. They speak of the Triodion, and we speak of the Triodion. Who borrowed the name from whom? Did the Church borrow it from the world, or did the world borrow it from the Church? Where does this name come from, and why do we call this the season of the Triodion, or say that “the Triodion opens”?
You should know, then, that this name, and indeed the whole season, takes its origin from one of the books of our Church, called the Lenten Triodion, or the Triodion of Compunction. Among the Church’s other books—the Parakletike, the Pentecostarion, and so forth—there is also this book. On Saturday evening, at Vespers, it was taken from the library, placed on the chanters’ stand, and opened.
The Church has opened this book; it has no book of Satan such as the one the world opens. The world’s book, the worldly Triodion, teaches one thing, while this book, the Triodion of the Church, teaches another. Thus it is the opening of this book that gives both the season and the expression “the Triodion opens” their name. The one Triodion, the Church’s book, reminds people of their sin. It tells them that their works do not save them, and directs their attention to Christ—to metanoia, repentance, to confession, and to Holy Communion. The other book, the book of the world, says: “None of these things exists. Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” Revelry, wild celebration, sin, feasting, fornication, adultery—
dancing—that is all it offers. “Hell is here, and Paradise is here as well.” That is what the world says. But things are not like that. Wherever you see the devil, through the world, opposing the works and reminders of the Church, you should know that something very serious is at stake. Satan does not want people to hear, because if they hear, many will turn back, change their lives, and take a different path. Those who have not heard make excuses for themselves. They seize upon false arguments: supposedly the Church is at fault, supposedly the clergy, supposedly bad Christians. In this way they justify themselves and remain far away. Yet when many people do hear, they weigh the matter carefully.
They may not admit it at once, because their pride will not let them say yes; yet inwardly the thought begins to gnaw at them, and the hour will come when they repent and return. That is why Satan does not let people reach the Church and listen. Who heard yesterday’s Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee? Who saw that Pharisee, with so many good works, so much almsgiving, and so much fasting, remain outside? Who heard it, when they did not return from their corruption until daybreak? No one went to Church. Will they go next Sunday to hear the Parable of the Prodigal Son? Not then either; there will be another weekend of revelry. And now that we have made it a five-day week and are free from Friday afternoon, nothing at all will be left standing. Will they go the following Sunday to hear about the Judgment? Not then either. Will they go later to hear the rest? No. Where, then, will they learn these things?
They do not listen; they do not go. Satan knows that if a person goes and hears something, that person may escape him. That is why he creates such an uproar outside and draws people toward it, until everything comes to nothing. In any case, speaking generally, that is what the Triodion is. Now this Triodion, which began yesterday and ends on the night of the Resurrection, will then be taken from the chanters’ stand, closed, and returned to the library. Another book, called the Pentecostarion, will be brought out and placed there, and from it we shall read and chant, and so forth—
through the season of Pentecost, because it speaks of the events from the Resurrection until Pentecost. Until that night, then, this entire season is divided into three parts. The first part of the Triodion runs from yesterday until Cheesefare Sunday.
The second runs from Clean Monday until the Saturday of Lazarus, and the third is Holy Week, which continues until the night of the Resurrection—until the cock crows late on Holy Saturday night, as Sunday begins and the Resurrection is celebrated. There are, then, three periods. The first contains five Sundays. The first is the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee, which we had yesterday. It presents two men: one was lost, and the other was saved. Strangely enough, the one who had the good works—the Pharisee—remained outside. The second Sunday brings the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Once again, it presents not one man but two: the younger brother and the elder, who had never left the house. And strangely enough—
the one who had never left the house remained outside, while the one who had sinned entered, because he repented, confessed, and received Holy Communion through the figure of the fatted calf. After these two parables are proclaimed at the beginning, as the foundation of this season, the third Sunday is appointed as the Sunday of the Judgment, or Meatfare Sunday. On that day the Church gives us both a parable and a prophecy. The prophecy is this: what will happen when the Son of Man comes? When the Son of Man comes, He will separate mankind into two groups, as a shepherd, He says, separates the sheep from the goats. Here we have the parable. “Why do You sit there judging us?” “I told you what you were to do. If you do not do it, I shall judge you one day. Expect this—and you yourselves will have brought it upon you.”
Will you tell Me that you did not know how to be saved? Come to the Church and hear how you are to be saved, because one day I shall judge you. Thus, on Meatfare Sunday, we have the Judgment. It is a day devoted to the Judgment. The preceding day is the first Saturday of Souls. Since the Judgment is set before us on the following day, we bring before Christ all the souls from Adam down to the present day, and we beseech Him, when He comes in His glory, to judge them mercifully. The Church offers this memorial service of her own accord, regardless of whether we also come with our kollyva, our prosphora, our oil, incense, and candles. Those are another matter; they help. But the Church, like a spiritual mother, presents these children of hers before Christ—
in anticipation of the Judgment. The Greek word for Meatfare, Apokreo, is a compound: apo, “away from,” and kreas, “meat”—farewell to meat. And when shall we meet meat again? On the night of the Resurrection. Then we shall meet it again. For now, farewell to meat. It is wrong to call the previous Sunday “the first Meatfare” and this one “the last Meatfare.” There is only one Meatfare. The other so-called Meatfare belongs to the belly and to Satan. From Meatfare Sunday until the following Sunday, when the first period ends and the second begins on Clean Monday, we have Cheesefare Week, which concludes with Cheese Sunday, or Cheesefare Sunday.
Strangely enough, everything except meat is permitted throughout that week, even on Wednesday and Friday. Meat is not permitted; that has been removed. We eat foods derived from animals—butter, cheese, milk, and eggs—but we do not eat meat. Fish is also permitted. This is why it is called Cheese Sunday, or Cheesefare Sunday. What does this mean? Why is this method used? There are two reasons: one spiritual, and the other concerning the body. The Church does not take a person from eating meat and, the very next day, place him on food prepared without oil. She removes meat on Sunday, leaves him for a week with fish, eggs, cheese, and milk, and brings him down gradually until he reaches the fast without oil. In the same way, someone who wants to lose weight cannot remove everything at once; he takes certain things away little by little so that his weight comes down. Or when someone is recovering from an illness and returning to ordinary food, he begins by adding small amounts to his diet. He does not immediately eat rich foods, but adds them slowly and gradually. In exactly the same way, Mother Church, who possesses the Spirit of God, brings a person down gently, removing certain foods little by little, until she brings him to Clean Monday and complete abstinence from food. That is the material aspect, the bodily instruction.
But there is also spiritual instruction. What is it? If someone looks deeply into this season, all the way toward Holy Week, Great Friday, and then the Resurrection beyond it, he will see a ladder, a broad road stretching ahead. In the distance he sees the Cross of Christ, and Christ crucified upon it. “What are You doing there? How did You come to be raised up there? Who raised You upon it?” “The belly of Adam and Eve raised Me there. They are the ones who did it.” “Why?” “Because they ate from the one thing I told them not to eat. Though I permitted them to eat from nine hundred and ninety-nine things and forbade only one, they ate from that one as well, and so raised Me up here.”
Do you know when this is commemorated? Do you know where the answer is found? It is found, of course, in the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. “What did You do to them for committing this act?” “I cast them out of Paradise.” “And when does Your Church teach us this?” “On Cheese Sunday.” On Cheesefare Sunday. If you go to Church that evening instead of going to the carnival, the masquerades, the revels, the embraces of sin, corruption, and dancing—if you go to Church beginning on Saturday evening for Cheesefare—take a handkerchief with you, so that you may weep and wipe away your tears as you hear what is said about Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Paradise. Who knows any of this? Not even the priests—
know it, nor the chanters who chant the hymns. Of course, that statement is too absolute; it is not literally so. What I mean is that a large proportion of both the clergy and the chanters do not know what they are chanting or what that day means. It is the saddest day for mankind: the day we were expelled from Paradise. The saddest day of all. And so Satan, to prevent people from learning that they are descendants of the first couple who were cast out, leaves no stone unturned. You know what happens during the so-called final carnival season. What does not happen in those days, especially together with Clean Monday? Nothing is left standing.
So does anyone learn what this is truly about? Do people learn that Adam and Eve stand outside Paradise, mourning and tearing at their cheeks, beseeching the leaves of the trees to intercede with God, so that He might open Paradise again and let them enter? Do they know these things? The result is that so-called Clean Monday becomes the filthiest Monday of the entire year. If the sins committed during that weekend were counted, would they be fewer or greater than those committed throughout the rest of the year? So many sins are committed, and no one knows what has happened. The Church therefore says to each person: “I am giving you preliminary instruction, and I remind you that the one who is cast out this coming Sunday…”
The sun hides its rays, the stars fall, and the moon turns blood-red because our first parents are being driven out. I give you this test and remind you of the command that was given to Adam: “Everything is yours except one thing.” And now, during this week as you journey toward that day, I tell you the same: “Everything is yours except meat.” Yet you go against it. You therefore reject this whole matter and its truth; and consequently you reject Me as well, for I have come here to be crucified so that I may bring Adam back into Paradise. My dear people, those who eat meat during Cheesefare commit the same sin as Adam and Eve. That is why the Church gives us this preparation. But when a person does not know what is commemorated on the coming Sunday,
he treats everything as though it were all the same: the “first Meatfare” and the “last Meatfare.” Yet there is only one Meatfare Sunday. The very word means farewell to meat. What does “first” mean? Do you give up meat twice? If you intend to continue eating it, how have you said farewell to it? How can it be called Meatfare if you are going to carry on eating meat? You have not yet taken leave of meat; you will do so on the following Sunday. So what do “first Meatfare” and “last Meatfare” mean? Do you understand? Such carelessness and ignorance are unacceptable in the twentieth century. Now that we have reached the moon, we must come down to earth and understand these matters. That concludes the first part. Then the scene changes and we enter what is called Great Lent. It begins...
on Clean Monday and ends on Lazarus Saturday. Those are the forty days. This is Great Lent, for the entire period up to Pascha comprises fifty days, not forty, though that is another subject. Great Lent, then, begins on Clean Monday and ends on Lazarus Saturday. The first three days are days of fasting and prayer. People do not eat. They fast until Wednesday, when they go to receive Holy Communion at the first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. Some who have the strength, after receiving Holy Communion and breaking their fast, undertake a second three-day fast. They fast again on Thursday and Friday of Clean Week, and eat food with oil on Saturday.
Oil is also permitted on Sunday. For those in good health, the fast of Great Lent allows oil only on Saturdays and Sundays. Everything beyond that is an indulgence. If there is illness, however, there is no fast. Even on Great Friday, a sick person may break the fast if illness requires it. But if there is no illness, the person will have to give an account. As the sixty-ninth Canon of the Holy Apostles says, a clergyman who does not fast on these days must be deposed, while a layperson must be excommunicated—cut off from the Church. I repeat: if there is illness, there should be no fasting, because the purpose of fasting is
to subdue the passions. Fasting puts the passions to death; it does not put the body to death. Its purpose is not to fill psychiatric hospitals, neurological clinics, or sanatoriums. No. Its purpose is to empty the houses of corruption and tear down unlawful beds. That is the purpose of fasting. This is why I say that fasting kills the passions, not the body. The Fathers say that where blood surges in, the spirit flows out. And you mothers, take care of your children. Find a way to teach them to fast. For if they do not fast, and you keep feeding them because you are afraid something might happen to them, one day those very children will strike you over the head with a slipper. God blesses those who obey His commandments. These days are holy. You have no right
to claim the Resurrection as your own and reach out for it if you have refused to humble yourself, to mourn for sin, to fast, and to pray. You will have the right to rejoice only if you first mourn. This is why we pass through Holy Week, the Week of the Passion, in order to reach the Resurrection. Yet we pay no attention either to Great Lent—which commemorates Christ’s forty days and forty nights of fasting—or to the Week of Christ’s Passion. Everyone simply heads for Pascha. Let Christ be crucified; we are going for the lamb, the cruise, the wages, and the holiday bonus. Let John be crucified, so long as we receive our gift from him. This cannot be right. These are errors that must now be corrected, and little by little, step by step, we must desire to enter the right path.
The first Sunday of Great Lent is dedicated to Orthodoxy. That is why the First Sunday of the Fast is called the Sunday of Orthodoxy. Can you believe whatever you wish? Can you simply believe in some supreme being, some higher power—in God, Jehovah, Buddha, or anyone else? Can you believe that you are a good person and will therefore be saved? No. Believe rightly in Christ. Believe in His Orthodox Church. Christ has one faith, one religion, and one Church. He does not have many kinds of faith or many churches, as though there could be a “union of the churches.” What union of churches? There is one Church: the Orthodox Church. The rest are phantoms fashioned by human beings, by pride and self-interest. Ask Satan and let him answer you. Ask Satan. Take someone who is possessed by a demon and bring him to Roman Catholicism.
He remains indifferent. Take him to Protestantism, and he pays no attention at all. Take him to the Jehovah’s Witnesses—nothing. Take him to Buddha, to Zoroaster, to Muhammad, wherever you wish—nothing. But when you bring him into an Orthodox church and place an Orthodox priest’s stole over him, he will nearly bring the whole church down. There you will see where the truth is, receiving confirmation from the negative side. A person cannot simply believe whatever he wishes. He must believe in the One whom the angel proclaimed to the myrrh-bearing women: “Why do you seek Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified? He is not here.” That Jesus—and the Jesus of whom Peter said, “You are the Son of God,”
the living God. You are the Son of the living God. Therefore, concerning Him,
a person needs both right belief and right conduct in order to be saved. These are the two oars. Of course, that day is dedicated above all to the restoration of the holy icons. But more broadly, as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, it calls each person to reflect and ask, “Am I walking on the right path?” My sincerity in matters of faith is not enough. It does not protect me from shipwreck.
Ask the man sitting at the helm, “Are you steering the right course?” He may answer, “Of course I am. What concern is it of yours?” But if he has made a mistake, does his sincerity change anything? Before long, the ship will be wrecked. It is not enough, then, for a person to believe in his own way, however sincere he may be. The question is whether he believes rightly. This is precisely why the Church has placed guiding lights along the believer’s road: the Ecumenical Councils, the Canons, and the Creed.
The Creed is the whole body, the sum, of the doctrines of the faith. A person must therefore believe rightly—I repeat—and needs both right belief and right conduct. He needs two oars. One bears the words “right faith,” and the other, “right works.” These works must not be done with what you have stolen from another person or gained by wronging him, but with the fruit of your own labor. When both oars are present, the person will move forward. Protestantism has one oar and says that faith is all that is needed. Roman Catholicism says works, and nothing else. The boat simply goes around in circles. Both faith and works are needed. This is what the Church possesses, and anyone who does not believe in this way will not be saved. He may issue himself a certificate declaring, “I am all right,” and others may say that he is all right too. But such certificates are not accepted by God. This is why He has set these things in place. Do you wish to walk onward,
to reach the holy Passion and the holy Resurrection of your God? Then you must believe rightly and act rightly. The second Sunday—and all these are events within the season whose book was opened yesterday; I am giving you, so to speak, its plan or program, describing it only in broad strokes and without the details—
the second Sunday is dedicated to a great Father of the Church who waged a mighty struggle against Roman Catholicism and the power of the papacy. He is Saint Gregory Palamas, a figure of the fourteenth century. If you wish, read the fourth chapter of the Philokalia. There you will learn about him and the struggles he undertook for our right faith.
For today, you know, everything that brings salvation and is connected with Orthodoxy and Hellenism is continually erased, concealed, and suppressed. These figures are not brought to light. The Church presents Saint Gregory as an example of right faith, just as the first Sunday speaks of right faith and is therefore called the Sunday of Orthodoxy. On the third Sunday, the Church raises up the Precious Cross. This is approximately the midpoint of Great Lent, and the Church says, “All you who are struggling, venerate the Cross and draw strength to complete the rest of the journey.” This is why the Third Sunday of the Fast is called the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross. It stands in the middle of Great Lent. If you look back toward Clean Monday and forward toward Lazarus Saturday, you will see that you are exactly halfway.
The believer—the person struggling, fasting, and practicing self-restraint both at the table and in the marriage bed—draws strength from the Cross. For this fast concerns not only food but also the flesh. Then we come to the fourth Sunday. Among other things, that Sunday reveals the power and authority of Satan, but also Christ’s power over Satan, as Christ heals a man possessed by a demon. At the same time, the Church presents Saint John Climacus, a great Father of nepsis, or watchfulness, who teaches us many things. He is associated with the Ladder because he composed many discourses and arranged them like a ladder, each discourse presenting a virtue.
When a person puts each virtue into action, he climbs another step. There are about thirty discourses. I do not know whether you have read Saint John Climacus. His book is available even in modern Greek. It also exists in the original text, but the modern Greek version allows us to understand it. If a person reads this book, he will understand how far away he is, how badly he has failed, and how deluded he is to think that he will be saved. He is deluded. For when a person believes himself unworthy of salvation, then he will be saved; but if he assumes that he will certainly be saved, he will not be saved. He has fallen into the error of the Protestants and others who read one book and imagine that they are already saved. No. A person must despair of his own righteousness and of the life he has lived. “I do nothing,” he says, even when he performs good works. “I do nothing.” Then he will be humble. This is what Saint John teaches. He is a teacher of metanoia, or repentance.
He is a teacher of confession. He turns a person inward and speaks to him within his heart. He does not deceive him but leads him into self-examination. This is what all the Fathers of nepsis, or watchfulness, do: they turn a person inward so that he may see the funeral within himself, the coffin within himself, instead of looking at other people’s coffins, accusing others, and declaring himself innocent. Then we come to the Fifth Sunday of the Fast. Among the other things proclaimed that day, we hear: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed, will suffer, will be crucified, and will rise again.” Alongside this prophecy, the Church brings forward another person worthy of imitation, one perfectly suited to these days: Saint Mary of Egypt. Why does the Church place her there?
To speak to every human being: “No matter how grave a sinner you are, salvation is possible if there is metanoia—repentance.” There was no woman in the world more corrupt than Saint Mary of Egypt. Yet she became a Saint because she repented and cast her flesh into the furnace of ascesis, and so became holy. You know what happened, do you not? Just as we go with a boyfriend or girlfriend to a feast day, carrying all our impurity with us, to light a candle before Saint Catherine, Saint Marina, or Saint Demetrios, so she went to Jerusalem on September 14 to venerate the Precious Cross. She even paid her passage with her own body.
With the same shamelessness that we display, burdened with a thousand sins yet going to light a candle, she went to venerate the Precious Cross. But she could not enter. An invisible power held her back. She tried to go in, but could not—not under any circumstances. Then she understood that something greater was taking place, and there at the entrance her conscience began to accuse her. At that time, the Church of the Resurrection had two great doors. Today there is only the one on the left, through which we enter and leave. Immediately beside it is another door that has been sealed. In those days, that door led directly toward Golgotha, about fifteen meters ahead, where the Cross had stood. She could see it from there, but she could not enter. Before her was an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, which remains in Jerusalem to this day.
She stood there and said to the Most Holy Theotokos, “My Most Holy Theotokos, intercede with our Lord so that I may enter and venerate the Cross, and I will put an end to my sin.” Indeed, at that moment she felt that she had been released, and she entered and venerated it. She never returned to Egypt. She set out for the desert with two loaves of bread under her arm, crossed the Jordan with dry feet, and went into the desert beyond the Jordan. She remained there for forty-six years with those two loaves of bread. Then, after forty-six years—for she had not yet been saved; nothing had yet been completed—God arranged for Elder Zosimas to go there during Great Lent and find her naked. She called out to him, “Throw me a garment, for I am a naked human being.”
“A woman.” He threw a garment over her, and she came before him and confessed her sins. For without confession, even if you were to go without food for a million years, it would be of no avail. If you have not confessed your sins, they remain. If you have not received Holy Communion after confession, there is no salvation. After forty-six years she confessed, even though she had lived on roots. The Saint even rose into the air.
Yet she had not attained Paradise. Sins are not overcome by fasting or prayer alone, nor by abstaining from Holy Communion. What happened, then? After hearing her confession, he was asked by her to bring the Holy Gifts the following year, when he came out again, so that she might receive Holy Communion. And indeed, the next year, during Great Lent, he brought Holy Communion and communed her. He met her at about the same place where he had found her the year before. Then she departed, after thanking him.
In the third year, the elder Zosimas returned to that place and found her dead. She had written in the sand: “Abba Zosimas, I thank you for hearing my confession and giving me Holy Communion. On the very day you communed me, I fell asleep in the Lord. Please bury my sinful body in the earth.” She had remained unburied. But how could he bury her? Where could he find a shovel or a pickaxe, or anything else to dig with? Then a great lion came toward him. “Ah, just what I needed! Come and help me bury the venerable woman.” The lion approached like a man and dug a hollow in the earth with its claws. And together they buried Saint Mary of Egypt.
The Church presents her to us on that day and says, “Woman, however sinful you may be; man, however sinful you may be—salvation is possible. Repent as this woman did, and then go forward to enter into the sacred Passion and the Holy Resurrection.” These are wise and beautiful things, yet they remain hidden and unnoticed.
People do not go to Church. Where, then, will they hear these things? In the marketplace? At the street market? At the carnival? Where will they hear and see these things if they do not go to Church? These things are spoken there. The denarii were left at the inn, in the keeping of the innkeepers; and when someone falls among thieves, he must go to the inn—to the Church, which receives everyone—if he wishes to be healed.
Great Lent ends with the Saturday of Lazarus.
The resurrection of Lazarus has been placed there liturgically, although it did not occur on that particular day; Lazarus was raised much earlier. But on that day Lazarus came, and, as you know, a meal was held. His sisters prepared a meal of thanksgiving for Christ because He had raised their brother. They stayed there together that evening, and early the next morning Christ mounted the donkey and entered Jerusalem. Great Lent ended there, and another period began: Holy Week, the Week of the Passion. Why is it called Holy and Great Week? Not because its hours are longer, but because of the great and unrepeatable events that took place. It is therefore called Holy and Great Week, or the Week of the Passion, and it too ends on the night of the Resurrection, between midnight and one o’clock. And just as there is
a three-day fast at the beginning of Great Lent, so there is also a three-day fast at its conclusion: Great Friday, Great Saturday, and until the night of the Resurrection. People neither eat nor drink anything. Those unable to keep this fast for two and a half days should eat on Great Friday and abstain from food on Great Saturday. In terms of the events commemorated, Great Saturday is even greater than Great Friday. On Great Friday, though Christ is crucified, we still have Him with us. On Great Saturday, we do not. And the people, in their own theological wisdom, say, “The fast is relaxed on every Saturday except Great Saturday.” How, then, can you eat bread rings? How can you eat eggs? How can you say, “The first Resurrection has taken place”? The saying itself declares, “except Great Saturday.” Therefore, all these other claims are false, and you are acting wrongly. So, as I have said, those unable to fast for two days should
break the fast on Great Friday, not on Great Saturday. For Christ told us:
“The days will come when the Bridegroom is taken away from you.” They will take the Bridegroom from you, He says, and then you must fast. When was the Bridegroom taken away? Great Saturday is the only day on which we do not have Him. On Great Friday, I repeat, we have Him, even though He is crucified. Great Saturday alone is the day on which we do not have Him. Early on Sunday morning, He is present once again. Therefore, Great Saturday is the day of fasting. I have sketched out, so to speak, this period that began yesterday and will end then. There are other events within it as well, including the five services of the Salutations of the Akathist Hymn.
These concern the Most Holy Theotokos. The foremost person during these days is our Lord Jesus Christ, who holds the first place. The second person, immediately after Him, is the Most Holy Theotokos (God-bearer). Through these five services of the Akathist Hymn, also called the Salutations, the events are recalled every Friday, especially the part played by the Most Holy Theotokos in the mystery of the incarnate divine economy, together with the Annunciation. It is all profoundly doctrinal. Anyone who understands the interpretation of the Akathist Hymn knows the whole Old Testament and New Testament thoroughly, as well as all the doctrine concerning his faith and salvation.
There are also the Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts. The Holy Eucharist—bread and wine consecrated on Saturday or Sunday—is offered in the Church during the week, on Wednesday and Friday, so that the faithful may receive Holy Communion. The full Divine Liturgy is permitted only on Saturday and Sunday because it is a joyful event, while this is a season of mourning. Therefore, such a joyful celebration is not permitted except on Saturday and Sunday. Yet it is not enough for the faithful to receive Holy Communion only twice a week; they should receive more often. For this reason, the Church keeps consecrated bread and wine from the previous full Divine Liturgy and offers them on two additional days. In this way, the faithful may receive Holy Communion four times a week.
All this sounds like a foreign language to people who have not received Holy Communion since childhood, or to those who imagine that Holy Communion is like a woman after childbirth and must wait forty days. They do not make their stomach wait forty days; they eat two, three, or four times a day. But when it comes to the soul, they say, “Let the soul wait forty days before receiving”—what, I wonder?—the Body and Blood of Christ. This is the food of the soul and the means by which a person is changed: from ordinary to renewed, from temporal to eternal, and from earthly to spiritual. Without Holy Communion, he cannot be transformed and become a prince, a royal child, so as to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, which we will hear about again in a few days. These, then, are the relevant points. This is, in a sense, the outline and plan of the season we entered yesterday, presented briefly through the two parables: yesterday’s parable and the one to come.
I said at the beginning that the two parables have similarities, but that one completes the other. In the first parable, the Publican was shown to be the one who gained everything. He simply said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner,” while beating his breast. The other man presented his works: “I am not like other men. I am not an adulterer, sexually immoral, or a thief. I am charitable; I tithe everything I acquire; I fast twice a week”—on Thursday and Monday, the days on which they fasted. Yet Christ sent him away. The one who asked for God’s mercy went down justified, rather than the one who stood there saying, “I am not like the others, so take notice of me.” There are many people like this who issue certificates of righteousness to themselves: “I am not like that man. I am not like that woman.” I remember once speaking with a woman about abortion.
She said, “It is true, Mr. Panagopoulos, that I have had seventeen abortions. But I know other women: one has had twenty-four, and another has had twenty-seven.” So now the woman with seventeen is an angel compared with those other grave sinners! There are many people like that. “I am not like him.” But are you what God wants you to be? The point is not to compare myself with someone worse than I am,
but with someone better than I am...
The Annunciation. Even if the person speaking to you behaves badly, even if he is a priest, that does not excuse you. “Whatever they tell you, observe and do; but do not act according to their works, for they say and do not do.” A person must pay close attention to this. His salvation depends on God. Does he listen to God, or does he look at some good deed he has done and imagine that he can present it before God? I told you earlier that there is no deed capable of purchasing salvation.
Salvation exists as God’s gift. A person’s works are taken into account, provided they are done according to God, and they determine his place in Paradise—not his entrance into it. Some people have purchased and paid for a seat in a stadium. Their seat inside may be number one hundred, for example, yet they cannot enter because the gate is closed. What good is a paid seat inside if they cannot get through the gate?
Think of a building: I have an apartment on the sixth floor, a penthouse with five or six rooms—a true paradise. But I have no key to enter the building, so I sit outside, beaten by the wind and rain. “Why am I outside, sir?” Because I have lost the key. Christ is the key. If you do not pass through Christ, you will not receive the apartment above. You built that apartment through your works. The Kingdom of Heaven. The Nativity of the Theotokos. The Annunciation. You do not receive Me in Holy Communion; there is no communion between us.
Will you get inside? Christ is the key; He is the way; He is the life; He is the light; He is everything; He is the truth—He is all things. You have good works; you have luggage. You are at the airport, and the attendant before you says, “Your ticket, sir.” “But I have luggage.” “Your ticket.” “But look, I have luggage.”
It is not your possessions that will get you through. Everyone is deluded into thinking that all is well because they do good works. That is what the Pharisee said too. Yet Christ told him, “Out you go; you are not acceptable to Me.” Why? The man was not unjust, sexually immoral, adulterous, a thief, or a murderer. He gave alms from all that he earned. Yet Christ said, “You are not acceptable to Me. Out.” Then where shall we go—we who have none of these virtues, who kill our children, do not fast, steal, lie, divorce, envy, blaspheme, gamble, and do all manner of things; we who cannot be made to give even a penny without being dragged into it; we who do not fast and have nothing good at all? Put the two side by side, and then let us discuss it. But many will say, “I too will beat my breast and be saved.” That is why Christ follows this with the parable of the Prodigal Son, showing that merely saying, “Remember me,” will not do.
Many people say, “I will say ‘Remember me,’ just as the thief did.” But the thief said, “Remember me,” before Christ said, “It is finished.” Do you understand? Christ had not yet said, “It is finished.” Christ had not yet descended into Hades, had not risen, and had not established the Church. After Christ rose, He said, “Come now; we await Pentecost.” Then: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” What does that mean?
Metanoia—repentance—and Confession. There is no mere “Remember me.” “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” That is Baptism. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” What is that? Holy Communion. So this is not a matter of simply saying, “Remember me.”
Who told you that you will have time to say, “Remember me”? You are walking along when a wire snaps from a trolley bus on the main road and cuts off your head. Who told you that you will say, “Remember me”? You are walking on the pavement, and someone drives up onto it, strikes you, and sends you crashing into a café. Who told you that you will say, “Remember me”? You suffer a heart attack. Who told you that you will say, “Remember me”? You become possessed by a demon. Who told you that you will say, “Remember me”? Your mind suddenly fails. Who told you that you will say, “Remember me”? There is an explosion or an earthquake. Who told you that you will say, “Remember me”?
What sort of thinking is this? There is no room here for a last-minute “Remember me.” Salvation requires steady work, carried out attentively and thoroughly. It is not simply a matter of beating your breast. And why does the Publican not strike his head, but beat his hand against his heart? Because this is where it all begins; it does not begin in the head. The heart gives the orders, not the nous, the spiritual intellect. The nous has been sold; it has been bought and paid for by the heart. The heart has been crippled and overwhelmed by sins. The nous, in itself, is free for every good work, but the heart is wicked and adulterous; it contains many sins—stealing, dishonorable deeds, and all the rest. Then the nous itself becomes wicked. And the more intelligent a person is, if his nous serves a corrupt heart, the more dangerous he becomes both to himself and to others.
So the struggle begins with the nous. This is why Scripture speaks as it does. The human heart is like a sponge. A sponge is full of holes. Put it into water, and it can soak up two kilos of water. When you squeeze it, you wonder, “Where was all that water hidden?” It was hidden in all those little holes. The heart is the same. Here lurks the demon of adultery; there, the demon of cowardice; elsewhere, sexual immorality; elsewhere, the refusal to have children; and elsewhere, the urge not to fast or not to pray. It is full—full of thick, black tar. That is what the heart contains. And it takes warfare to remove these things one by one. You must drive them out and cleanse the heart. You know what happens when the tonsils become swollen with disease: there is pus inside. You squeeze it out, or else the tonsils must be removed altogether. The human heart is like that. Some people have cleansed their hearts, but only a little, removing merely the obvious things. The cancer still remains within. The poison is still there, and those two sins remain there with Satan dwelling in them. That is why the guilt lies here, in the heart, and not here, in the head. This is why Christ shows the Publican beating his breast.
So that no one could make that excuse, Christ gave the second parable, again about two people, which we shall hear the day after tomorrow. He presented a father, a man with two sons, the younger of whom left home. He asked his father to give him his property—his share of the inheritance. He had earned none of it, just as we heard the other day in the parable of the talents. Nevertheless, his father gave it to him. The son lived in his own way, far from God, far from the Church, and far from his father’s house. Though once dressed in silk with gold cufflinks, he ended up feeding pigs. What was there for him to eat? Carob pods. And what are those carob pods? The pleasures of this world. Run after the flesh if you wish; run after money; run after your belly and everything else. In the end, you will drown in these things. A person must return by this road: he must repent and—
—go and make his repentance known to those who have been appointed and given authority, saying, “I have sinned.” If a person repents but does not put matters right, nothing comes of it. But when a person truly repents, then God restores him. Then God gives him back the first robe, slaughters the fatted calf, gives him Holy Communion, and there is joy in heaven. This is the way of a person’s salvation. There are also matters concerning the elder brother, but time does not permit us to discuss them now. We shall try to add them to our next talk.

εμείς εδώ στον κόσμο. Η περίοδος αυτή είναι γνωστή περισσότερο στον κόσμο παρά στους θρησκευομένους. Πολλοί χριστιανοί δεν ξέραν χθες ότι ανοίγει το Τριώδιο, κοσμικοί όμως το ξέρανε. Και είχανε ετοιμάσει για τα γλέντια τους, για τα ξεφαντώματά τους, για τις αμαρτίες τους. Τριώδιο λένε και αυτοί, Τριώδιο λέμε και εμείς. Ποιος εδανείσθηκε την ονομασία από τον άλλον; Η Εκκλησία εδανείσθη την ονομασία από τον κόσμο ή ο κόσμος εδανείσθη την ονομασία από την Εκκλησία; Και από πού προέρχεται αυτή η ονομασία και λέγεται περίοδος του Τριωδίου ή «ανοίγει το Τριώδιο»;
Αν όχι αμέσως, διότι δεν τον αφήνει ο εγωισμός να πει ναι, μέσα του όμως δουλεύει πλέον το σαράκι και θα έρθει μια ώρα που θα μετανοήσει και θα επιστρέψει. Γι’ αυτό δεν τον αφήνει τον κόσμο ο σατανάς, δεν τον αφήνει να φτάσει στην Εκκλησία να ακούσει. Ποιος άκουσε την παραβολή χτες του Τελώνου και του Φαρισαίου; Να δει ένα Φαρισαίο με τόσα καλά έργα, με τόση ελεημοσύνη, με τόση νηστεία, που έμεινε έξω. Ποιος το άκουσε, που τον γυρίσανε από τη διαφθορά στα ξημερώματα; Κανένας δεν πήγε στην Εκκλησία. Θα πάνε την ερχομένη Κυριακή να ακούσουν την παραβολή του Ασώτου; Ούτε την Κυριακή· άλλο γλέντι το Σαββατοκύριακο. Και τώρα που τις κάμαμε και πέντε τις ημέρες και είμαστε από την Παρασκευή το μεσημέρι ελεύθεροι, τώρα είναι που δεν θα μείνει τίποτα όρθιο. Θα πάει μήπως παραπίσω να ακούσει την Κρίση; Ούτε τότε. Θα πάει παραπίσω να ακούσει τα άλλα; Ούτε τότε. Πού θα τα μάθει;
Πρόσωπο της εξομολογήσεως. Είναι πρόσωπο που γυρίζει τον άνθρωπο και του μιλάει μέσα στην καρδιά του. Δεν τον ξεγελά τον άνθρωπο, τον γυρίζει μέσα του, κάνει εσωστρέφεια, γιατί όλοι αυτοί οι νηπτικοί Πατέρες αυτό κάνουνε: γυρίζουν τον άνθρωπο μέσα να δει την κηδεία που έχει μέσα ο ίδιος, το φέρετρο που έχει μέσα ο ίδιος, να μη βλέπει τα φέρετρα του άλλου και να κατηγορεί τους άλλους και να βγάλει τον εαυτόν του αθώον. Έπειτα προχωρεί στην Πέμπτη Κυριακή των Νηστειών, που εκτός των άλλων που λέγει, «Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου θα παραδοθεί, θα υποστεί, θα σταυρωθεί και θα αναστηθεί», τότε, την προφητεία αυτή που κάνει, ανασταίνει και ένα άλλο πρόσωπο αξιοπροςμίμητο, και μάλιστα στις ημέρες πηγαίνει σωστά, την Οσία Μαρία την Αιγυπτία. Γιατί τη βάζει εκεί;
Σωτηρία υπάρχει. Λαμβάνονται υπόψη τα έργα του ανθρώπου, εφόσον γίνουν κατά Θεόν και έχουν σχέση με τη θέση του ανθρώπου στον Παράδεισο. Με τη θέση, όχι με την είσοδο. Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που έχουν αγοράσει πληρωμένη θέση στο γήπεδο. Τι είναι μέσα η θέση; Το νούμερο εκατό, παραδείγματος χάριν. Δεν μπορούν να μπουν όμως. Η πόρτα είναι κλειστή. Τι να το κάνω εγώ αν έχει πληρωμένη θέση μέσα, εφόσον δεν μπορεί να μπει;
λένε πολλοί, θα πω το μνηστή μου λέει που είπε ο ληφτής Ο ληστής το «μνήσθητί μου» το είπε πριν ο Χριστός πει το «τετέλεσται». Καταλαβαίνεις; Ο Χριστός δεν είχε πει το «τετέλεσται», ο Χριστός δεν είχε κατεβεί στον Άδη, δεν είχε αναστηθεί, δεν είχε φτιάξει Εκκλησία. Όταν ο Χριστός ανέστη: «Ελάτε εδώ», λέει, περιμένουμε την Πεντηκοστή. «Λάβετε Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον· ἄν τινων ἀφῆτε τὰς ἁμαρτίας, ἀφίενται αὐτοῖς· ἄν τινων κρατῆτε, κεκράτηνται». Τι λέει αυτό;
Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα προλάβεις να πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»; Περνάς και κόπηκε ένα σύρμα λεωφόρου από ένα τρόλεϊ και σου 'κοψε το κεφάλι. Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»; Πηγαίνεις στο πεζοδρόμιο και ανεβαίνει ο άλλος με τη ρόδα και σε μπάζει μέσα στο καφενείο. Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»; Έπαθες μια καρδιακή προσβολή. Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»; Εδαιμονίσθης. Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»; Έπαθες μια μαλάκυνση στο κεφάλι. Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»; Έγινε μια έκρηξη, ένας σεισμός. Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα πεις το «μνήσθητί μου»;
