Summary
The lecture presents the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross as an inexhaustible mystery prefigured throughout salvation history, not merely introduced at the Crucifixion. Moses’ bronze serpent in the wilderness prefigured Christ’s elevation on the Cross, through whom those wounded by sin and Satan receive eternal life. The lecture concludes that the Church’s sacramental life and the experienced activity of the Holy Spirit strengthen believers beyond abstract belief toward lived knowledge of God.

Following on from last night’s talk, and in connection with the events of this great day, the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, I thought I would speak to you this evening about this great event—an event that one might call inexhaustible. It can never be exhausted. It is not something the human person can fully contain, and no matter what anyone may say, the subject will always remain inexhaustible. Thank you.
It is bound up with God and is boundless in meaning. The Precious Cross has countless aspects, each offering profound lessons. It is enough to tell you that the Precious Cross has a history that reaches far back. Many people think that the Precious Cross first appeared when Christ came into the world and was crucified upon it, giving us the Cross and the Crucified One. But let me take this opportunity to tell you that it did not begin then. The Precious Cross comes, as we say, from Paradise itself. If a parent beats his son, someone may ask him, “Do you not know that the rod came from Paradise?” But that is not the wood that came from Paradise. The wood from Paradise is the wood upon which God was crucified. And yet millions upon millions of people have taken offense at the Precious Cross; not only do they refuse to use it, but they blaspheme it in many different ways. Four Persons and one symbol have a history reaching far back. We have known of the Precious Cross from the foundation of the world. There are types, prophecies, and images
that point to and speak of the Precious Cross, just as there are types and prophecies concerning our Lord. There are also such things concerning the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), and concerning the Holy Spirit, as there are concerning the Precious Cross. All these Persons, together with this symbol, have a history reaching far back.
Did the Precious Cross, then, first appear on the day Christ came into the world? The proof that it did not is that Christ speaks to us of the Cross before the Crucifixion. He says to the people, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” What Cross is He speaking about? As I said last night, Christ had not yet been crucified. The people did not yet understand the Cross. Therefore, the power of the Cross was already at work under the old dispensation. According to one tradition, the first person to make the sign of the Cross, without knowing what she was doing, was the Most Holy Theotokos. When Simeon took Christ as a little child into his arms,
he uttered the prophecy: “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rising of many, and for a sign that will be spoken against.” In other words, because of this little Child some would fall and others would rise, according to their faith and according to how each person would receive and accept Him. Then he turned to the Most Holy Theotokos and said, “A sword will pierce your own heart also.” He prophesied that before long she would see Him hanging upon the Cross. Even before this, the Most Holy Theotokos had made the sign symbolically while defending herself. When she returned pregnant from the hill country of Judah, she could not explain her pregnancy.
These are practical matters. Even today we find this difficult to accept; we mock it and say, “Perhaps she became pregnant like the Most Holy Theotokos with the lily?” We make fun of it, and yet this was what their human reasoning suggested. How did the Most Holy Theotokos defend herself? “I know no man. I am pure; I am honorable. This is what happened.” Who could understand it? Who could accept it? And there, as she defended herself in that difficult position, she made the sign of the Precious Cross with these words: she raised her hand to the right and then placed it upon her breast—not, of course, in the careless way we do it today. We do not know what we are doing.
She simply placed her hand there and said, “By what is written upon my face, by Him who is within my womb, and by the angels at my right and at my left, I call you to witness.” In this way she formed the Cross—the very Cross that would later cause a sword to pierce her heart. So one tradition tells us. Then the Cross came into the world, and the power of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross was revealed. The demons tremble when they see a faithful person who believes in Christ make the sign of the Cross—but make it correctly. Allow me to emphasize that: make the sign of the Cross correctly. We have grown old, and still we cannot make even one proper sign of the Cross.
A person does not cross himself properly but merely traces some shape in front of him. Satan is not afraid of that. It is a weapon with no value. But when you truly cross yourself with the sign of the Cross, and Satan sees you marked with the Cross, he remembers the Crucified One and flees headlong. I have heard demon-possessed people say, “Throw away what you are holding and come fight me! Throw away what you are holding”—meaning the Precious Cross—“and come fight me! Throw that horn out of your hands”—meaning the prayer rope. For every knot of the prayer rope contains nine crosses, and if the prayer rope has a hundred knots,
then, for example, it contains nine hundred crosses. “Throw it out of your hand and come fight me!” Since these things have been said, let us pay attention to them, as far as the Crucified One grants us. Even if we learn nothing else tonight, and no other moral teaching remains with us, let this at least remain: never raise your hand to make the sign of the Cross if you are only going to trace some other shape instead of a cross. Do not rush. If we do not wish to make the sign three times, let us make it once—but let it truly be a cross, made correctly. When a seal is placed upon a document, it must be clearly visible and properly made if the document is to be valid. If you merely press something down and twist it around, not only will the seal be rejected, but many times...
it may even be regarded as forgery, and you may end up in prison. I watched today as hundreds of people—perhaps more than a thousand—passed by and venerated the Precious Cross. Perhaps two out of every fifty made the sign of the Cross correctly. The rest merely waved their hands about. The elderly in particular hurried to trace some sort of decoration in front of themselves and imagined they had made the sign of the Cross. When you do not respect the form of the Cross, you do not respect the Cross itself and, by extension, you do not respect the Crucified One. I do not know where to begin in speaking about its power, because both where we come from and, even more so, here where you live, you are in a place where the Cross...
and consequently the Crucified One, are not presented with power and authority. Indeed, the Precious Cross is often blasphemed through false interpretations of certain passages in the Old Testament. For example, it says, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.” Protestants therefore put this question to us: “Since this wood is cursed—and Scripture proves it by saying, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree’—why do you use this cross and bring it back into your memory and to the forefront of your faith?” It is true that Scripture says, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.” But the question is this:
Was it truly speaking about Christ, or about criminals? For Christ ascended the Cross as though He were a criminal, though He was no criminal. Is the wood cursed in itself? No. That is false and a mistaken interpretation. Wood in itself is neither good nor evil. What fault does the wood bear? How can the wood itself be cursed? It becomes cursed according to the blood it receives, according to the person nailed upon it. The crosses of the two thieves were cursed because they received the blood of criminals, the blood of robbers. But what of the Cross in the middle, which was soaked with sinless blood, with divine blood? Is it accursed wood, or is it the Precious Wood?
It is the Precious Wood. Stand before a demon and bring out your cross containing a fragment of the Precious Wood, and you will see what happens. It certainly does not weigh a kilogram; the fragment may be no larger than the tip of a needle, fixed there with a little wax, yet the demon cannot endure it. From this a person will understand. The Cross is precious to us because we do not venerate the crosses of the thieves. We venerate the Cross of our Christ. From the moment that wood was soaked with His sinless, divine, and precious blood, it became the Precious Wood. The Cross is both Precious and Life-Giving.
Our Christ was indeed numbered with the transgressors—“He was numbered with the transgressors,” as Isaiah says in chapter fifty-three—but He is not a transgressor. There was a type of this in the Old Testament, which the Church brought forward the other day and presented on the Sunday associated with the Precious Cross. For the Church surrounds every great feast with a Sunday before it and a Sunday after it. Last Sunday was the Sunday before the Exaltation, just as the coming Sunday will be the Sunday after the Exaltation. The preceding Sunday speaks chiefly of the types; the feast proclaims the event itself; and then comes the moral teaching
of the Precious Cross on the following Sunday. Last Sunday, then, the Church brought forward this type, which Christ Himself interpreted; consequently, the interpretation is authoritative. No one can tell us that this type, which took place in the Old Testament, had no connection with Christ, since Christ Himself brings this event forward from the Old Testament. What was it? Do you remember? Those of you who study can find it in chapter twenty-one of Numbers. At that time Moses, as guide and leader—the head of the people, as we would say—was leading the Hebrews who had come out of the land of Egypt toward the Promised Land. On the journey the Hebrews became discontented and murmured. As we would say, they nearly blasphemed God’s providence and His love for them. They spoke shamefully against the manna. “Our soul loathes this food,” they said. Yet the manna was something angelic, beyond anything produced by human hands and therefore free from deceit and pure. According to one tradition, it tasted like whatever each person desired. If I wished to eat fish that day, for example, the manna
tasted like fish. If another wanted meat, the manna tasted like meat. If another wanted vegetables, it tasted like vegetables. God satisfied each person, condescending to human weakness. If this tradition is true, He thereby forestalled every reason for their murmuring. But do you know what they said? “We would rather be back beside the cooking pots of the Egyptians”—regardless of the fact that they had been slaves, making bricks and gathering straw—“and eating leeks and onions.” They preferred that to the manna, which God alone knows how wondrously...
They spoke these words. Then, where they were encamped, serpents appeared—not ordinary serpents, but venomous ones—and anyone they bit died. To put it plainly, the whole place reeked of death; they were burying people every day. But they realized their guilt: all these serpents had appeared because of their murmuring and because of the words they had spoken against the manna. And do you know what they were blaspheming and murmuring against? You know, do you not? The Body and Blood of Christ—of Christ Himself. The manna was the type that prefigured the Body and Blood of Christ, as Christ Himself explains, and as those of you who read Holy Scripture know.
“Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died. Eat My manna, the true manna.” When this happened, they repented and hurried to Moses, begging him to pray to God to remove the serpents from the camp. As we know from other events, Moses was always simple and gentle of heart. In his own way, he knelt and entreated God to take those serpents away from the camp. God answered that the serpents would not be removed. The people themselves had brought them there with their own tongues. But God would provide a remedy. And then He instructed Moses
to make a bronze serpent and fasten it—set it up, raise it, however you wish to say it—upon a wooden pole in the middle of the camp, down on the plain. When the sunlight struck it, it would shine. Whenever anyone was bitten by a serpent, he was to turn and look upon that bronze serpent; then he would not die, God said, but would live. So God did not remove the serpents; He did not remove the devils from their midst, as we might say today. Many people do not want Satan. But who made the demons what they are? God did not make them demons—that is another story. He did, however, provide a remedy for those who are bitten by Satan. And He says:
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Just as Moses, when the serpents were biting the Hebrews, made the bronze serpent and raised it on high, so that whoever had been bitten could look upon it and not die, so also the Son of Man must be lifted up. He too must ascend the wood of the Cross, so that whoever is bitten by Satan in this world may look upon Him and not die, but live. Christ Himself, then, brings forward a type and applies it to Himself. He says, in effect, “What will happen shortly has already been set forth in the Old Testament.” You may ask why I have brought forward this type.
This answers what we said earlier: He was lifted up as though He were lawless, yet He was not lawless; He was holy. When people hear this type, they cannot make sense of it unless they know how to interpret what I am about to explain. We have learned to see Christ in the Old Testament as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,” as the Holy Spirit says in the Apocalypse, and as the lamb Abraham saw when he was about to sacrifice Isaac. The angel cried out, “Do not lay your hand upon the child.” Abraham turned and saw a lamb—a ram—with its horns caught in a tree,
which remains to this day on the height of Golgotha in Jerusalem and which, according to Holy Scripture, is called Sabek, meaning “the tree of forgiveness.” We have become accustomed to seeing Christ as the innocent lamb led before the shearer, as Isaiah says. But here we have a serpent, the symbol of Satan: “the ancient serpent, Satan,” as the Apocalypse says. How, then, some people ask—and understandably so, if they have not studied the matter—how can Christ be symbolized by a serpent? Precisely in this way:
The way Christ appeared upon the Cross is exactly what we see in that prophecy and type. Christ was lifted up as a criminal without being a criminal, numbered among the lawless without being lawless. He appeared to be guilty, but He was not guilty. So it was with that serpent. Did it have teeth? Did it have venom? No. It was made of metal. It looked like a serpent, but you could embrace it or sleep beside it, and it would not kill you, because it had no venom. It appeared to be a serpent, but it was not a serpent. It appeared to be a danger, but it was not a danger. That is the meaning of the type. In the same way, Christ would appear to be a criminal, but He was not a criminal.
For us, then, my beloved, the Precious Cross is a great thing. Blessed are those who wear it, make its sign, and believe in it. Many wear it, yet neither make its sign nor believe in it; instead, they blaspheme it. When they blaspheme the Crucified One, they blaspheme both Christ and the Cross. When they blaspheme the Theotokos, they also blaspheme the Cross. This whole mystery, everything that played a part in our salvation, is blasphemed and condemned. I do not know how you deal with this matter here. Since this day gives us the opportunity, you would do well to pay attention to it. Nearly all the gifts a person receives begin with the Cross. From the day a person is baptized, a cross is placed around his neck.
Out of piety, the godparent who receives someone at Baptism has always given that person a cross—not only so that the cross may guard him, but also so that it may remind him of the Crucified One. Take care: from this moment onward, use this cross and make the sign of the Cross over yourself. Take care, for I am giving you a weapon because you are in a state of war. You spat upon Satan, renounced Satan, and declared that you would take your stand with Christ. From the moment you renounce Satan and his works, you become his enemy. How will you face him unarmed? Therefore, I also give you a weapon: “I have given you the Cross as a weapon against Satan.” Some of us wear it merely as an ornament.
We treat it as an outward action, not as a power. We may have a little faith within us, but that is not enough. A person must understand it well. What does this mean? When a person’s hand hangs the cross around someone’s neck, when his lips draw near to kiss it, or when his hand is raised to make the sign of the Cross over himself or another—as, for example, when a mother makes the sign of the Cross over her child at night and puts him to bed—he must know inwardly whether what he has done has truly accomplished anything. Many times, making the sign of the Cross accomplishes nothing.
The parent himself lives without the Cross. He wants, through the sign of the Cross, to impart protection from Satan, but he cannot impart it because he does not possess it himself. Satan is not afraid. Let me take this opportunity to tell you: however beautifully you make the sign of the Cross, if the hand is not clean and the person making the sign has no relationship with the Crucified One, it has no power. As I have said repeatedly, the wood in itself is neither good nor evil. It receives its power from Christ; and if the person believes, then this sign becomes effective—the sign at which Satan shudders and flees. Therefore, with reverence we must place around our own necks and around the necks of others,
especially children, this means of protection, this power against the curse. At the same time, we must understand what it is and how it becomes effective and possesses power. In the early Church, people were baptized, while Chrismation was usually administered by the bishops. The bishops would travel in turn from place to place and chrismate the children. Even today the Church provides the Holy Chrism, the vessel of consecrated oils and fragrances prepared every Great and Holy Thursday at the Patriarchate. Then Chrismation is performed with the words, “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Along with Chrismation, the bishop also gave every newly baptized person a cedar cross—a small wooden cross made of cedar.
Through this gesture he wished to say to the newly baptized person, “I am equipping you and giving you a weapon that you must keep throughout your life.” Today we give it as a gift. Thus this good gesture still remains among us. Almost everyone, even the most sinful, wears some kind of cross. I have met women and young men who have no relationship with the Church and no relationship with Christ, yet they wear a cross. They live deeply corrupt lives, yet they still wear a cross. I do not want to take it away from them, but I do want to remind them what it is that they are wearing.
In a difficult moment, when such a person cannot cope, he will call upon this cross. The mercy of God will, of course, hasten to help him, but it will then await his metanoia—his repentance and return—so that the work may be brought to completion. For us, then, this is a great matter. Today’s feast has countless aspects and offers countless moral lessons. Today I also wanted to speak about something that confirms for us the truth of our faith and its power, something that is taking place today in many homes, both in our homeland and here. Today people
invoke the power and grace of the Precious Cross to enter their homes, and they preserve it in something that in everyday language is called leaven. You know that in many homes today people have called upon the power of the Precious Cross and prepared leaven, so that they may use it to make the prosphora they bring to the Church. Let me add a brief aside. Two people asked me this question: “Mr. Panagopoulos, is it wrong to use commercial yeast to make prosphora?” I shall answer, since this may also be a concern for you.
Pay attention. At one point in the Divine Liturgy the priest says, “Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee, on behalf of all and for all.” What does this mean? We offer to You Your own gifts, taken from what is already Yours. Therefore, if you wish to be exact and ensure that what you offer is entirely His, then make your leaven from what is His—from His own grace—so that the offering may be wholly His, both spiritually and materially. Of course, for convenience, we go to a bakery or another place that sells yeast and use that instead. But do not do this.
Orthodox Christian, that is what others do. But you wish to prepare something that may, in its turn, be brought to the Church, sanctified, and become the Body and Blood of Christ. What a great blessing this is, and how blessed are the hands that prepare these things! So take care to prepare leaven today through the Precious Cross, and keep it for this sacred work. Some people do not believe in this practice. What do we often hear? “It is not the power of the Cross; it is simply a natural property of basil that causes these things.” Are you speaking seriously? Go and cut some basil from your own flowerpot.
Put it in and let us see whether anything happens. If this is a property of basil and you have discovered it through chemistry, then show me. Do it; try it; put it to the test. You have no right to speak against the Holy Spirit, for then you blaspheme, and this will be forgiven neither in this age nor in the age to come. You know that, according to the Lord, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be forgiven neither in this age nor in the age to come. Does this simply mean the things some people say against Christ or the Holy Spirit? No. It refers to the one who rejects—and therefore blasphemes—the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit can work a miracle not only through basil, but through rosemary or anything else you choose. He gives life to ordinary flour bought from the grocer, flour that cannot come alive by itself. Fermentation begins within it; life appears; the dough rises; and when you refresh the leaven, it spills over the container. You cannot dismiss this as foolishness and claim that the basil itself produces these things.
The Nativity of the Theotokos, the Gospel, the Annunciation, the Resurrection, the Antichrist. One mixture will settle and rot, while the other will begin to acquire a pleasant, slightly sour fragrance. When you refresh it—the process known as feeding the leaven—it will begin to spill over the container, and you will be able to use it to make prosphora. Keep some in your home both for making prosphora in the future and for preparing them now. This shows us that these matters are not simple. Let the Protestants try it; let the Catholics try it; let anyone try it. No one can do it. Only the Orthodox Christian can do this, because the only Church that possesses the grace of the Holy Spirit is the Orthodox Church. This, then, is something that strengthens us in our faith today. We do not remain at the level of faith alone; we advance to knowledge. We possess knowledge. If someone were to ask me, “Do you expect us to believe this?” and if we ourselves were asked whether we believe, we could readily answer, “No, we do not believe.” “You do not believe? Why?” Because I know. I have gone beyond belief. I know my God; I see Him.
I see Him in His divine uncreated energies: in the blessing of water, in the prayers against unclean spirits, which are put to flight, which blaspheme and shudder. I see Him even in this basil I have mentioned—in this simple plant, which could just as well be any other plant. It does not have to be basil; that makes no difference. If the Church uses basil, it is because basil is associated with the fragrant plant that led Saint Helena to the place where the Precious Cross was found. These things are connected. What other special property have they discovered in basil? Must we now mock the people and deceive them? Thank you. For this reason, our punishment will be very great, since God has left us things that we can now perceive through knowledge, and not through faith alone.
In this way, too, the Church encourages a person’s faith today and assures him that he holds the truth. Of course, these are not the only proofs that ours is the true faith; there are countless others. Thomas once sought to establish his faith through his senses, so that he might accept or reject the Resurrection of Jesus. Christ condescended to him and satisfied his request, showing him His side and satisfying both his sight and his touch. Then Thomas cried out, “My Lord and my God!” Today many of Christ’s wounded sides have been left here in the world, among Christians in whom He is at work, so that people may
test their faith and discover whether what they believe is true. Perhaps, if God grants me a little longer here, I shall give a separate talk on this subject: the sides of the Lord that are present in modern society and in our own time. A person does not need to go to Cana or Capernaum to encounter Christ, because Christ has left signs here even now, so that people may see, be strengthened, and follow Him. The warfare will, of course, continue. We Orthodox Christians have a duty not only to preserve ourselves through these arguments by answering our own logismoi—our intrusive thoughts—but also to enlighten other people,
if they are willing to see; otherwise, they will be left without excuse. What is preached is always proclaimed so that people may believe and salvation may come to them, although many do not accept it. Yet it must be spoken with love, condescension, and understanding. Then it bears fruit. In Isaiah, chapter fifty-one, verse eleven—forgive me, chapter fifty-five, verse eleven—it says: “The word that goes forth from My mouth shall not return empty.” At this moment I am speaking on behalf of the Lord. A word goes forth from my mouth. It goes forth like a message with two possible outcomes: a person hears, obeys, and is saved.
If a person does not obey, he is condemned and left without excuse. It is good for the word to bear two fruits: obedience and salvation. Let it not merely accomplish the work of God; let it also bring about the salvation of the person. For when someone hears and does not obey, then only God’s work is accomplished, and tomorrow He will say to him, “You heard, but you were not edified; you disbelieved and paid no heed.” What I am saying cannot exhaust this subject. I am simply touching briefly on this great theme, presenting a few points so that we may give heed both to the Crucified One and to our Cross.
For us, the Cross is something great, a mighty power. But take careful note of one thing I am about to tell you—something that renders the Cross powerless. The almighty and life-giving Cross is rendered powerless when, as I say, the hand making its sign is sinful. I may have mentioned this here before, in an earlier talk, but I will repeat it for anyone who has not heard it. In the early days of Christianity, a Jewish man was passing by a building where some builders were at work. Across from the building stood a rich man’s house. His daughter appeared at the window, and one of the workers said, ‘Even to the devil…’
“I would give my soul to win her.” The Jew who was passing below heard this and kept it in mind. He went on a little farther, then came back and approached someone, managing to find out the man’s name and address. Indeed, I do not know whom he asked, but he wrote down where the man lived and what his name was. That evening he visited him, knocked on his door, and said, “Are you the man who works at that particular building site?” “Yes,” he replied. “And are you the one who said such-and-such this afternoon—that you would give your soul, and so on?” “Well,” he said, “why shouldn’t I give it? Gladly!”
“I will.” “I can help you,” the man told him. “Will it cost a lot?” “It will cost you nothing.” They are very generous, you see, when it comes to such things. “Nothing at all. You need only do what I tell you.” “Let me hear it.” “Are you afraid of cemeteries?” he asked him. “It is the living I am afraid of,” he replied. “I am not afraid of the dead.” “Very well. Tonight you will write on a piece of paper: ‘I give my soul to the devil so that I may win her,’ and then, in the evening, you will go to the cemetery, to the graveyard, and throw it into the air.”
“Whatever you see, be careful not to make the sign of the Cross.” “Agreed, agreed.” “And tomorrow,” he tells him, “let us meet again to see the results.” And indeed, the man...
He wrote something on a piece of paper, got up, and at midnight went to the cemetery. He threw it into the air, uttered some sort of invocation there, and threw it into the air again. But then he saw demons rushing at him like wild beasts, trying to snatch the paper away. When he saw them—and you can understand how he felt—his instinct for self-preservation took over: the young man raised his hand and made the sign of the Cross. Because, you know, if the devil showed us his true appearance, no one would listen to him and no one would follow him. So he conceals it and comes to us only with sweet words. Do you know what a young lady in Athens once told me? Forgive me—I am moving from one subject to another.
“Someone kisses you sweetly in your sleep—so very sweetly. What could it be?” And it was Satan. Sweet kisses, mind you—and it was Satan. How it was proved to be Satan is another matter. The next day, as they had arranged, the man met with the Jew. “Well, what happened?” “I went,” he said. “And then what? Let’s see—did they take it? What happened?” He replied, “How should I know what came over me at that moment? I threw it—I’m not afraid. I threw it, but then some things appeared there, with horns and tails and hooves and all the rest. And I don’t know how, but I raised my hand and made the sign of the Cross.” “Ah, that’s where you went wrong,” the Jew told him. “That’s where you went wrong. Didn’t I tell you not to make the sign of the Cross? You’re no good for this sort of thing!”
The result was that he led him into sin. “Do you still insist?” he asked him. “Do you want to carry out your business?” “I do.” “Will you commit murder?” “I’ll do whatever you want.” “Then go and kill someone for me, and bring me his heart here.” And so, in our own land, he strangled someone, tore out his heart, wrapped it up, and took it to the Jew. “Now go,” he told him, “and do the same thing I told you to do last night.” So the man went; once again he threw the paper, once again they rushed to seize it, and once again, out of fear, he made the sign of the Cross. But this time the demons took it. The paper was thrown, the sign of the Cross was made, yet the demons took it. Why? Because now the hand was stained with blood.
The Cross no longer has power. For if the Cross had power apart from a person’s faith and purity, then we could go to a cemetery, surrounded by all those crosses, and fear nothing, thinking that no devils could be there. But that is not how it is. You see that even this Cross of the Almighty has no power when it is made by a sinful hand. Paul says, “We desire that, in prayer, the hands should be holy and pure.” Pure from what? Does he mean washed with soap? No. Pure from sins. And we, unfortunately, limit the power of the Precious Cross because we do not watch over our lives or our hands, even though they may be washed again and again and covered with fragrance,
these hands have no power to make the Precious Cross effective. Take heed of this, if you think it has any importance. For us Orthodox Christians, the Cross is a thing of honor, because it was the throne and the glory of Christ Himself. If you have not already done so, read the seventh chapter of John. There John says that the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Christ “was not yet glorified.” In other words, Christ had not yet been crucified. The glory of Christ, the throne of Christ, is the Cross of Christ. It is not a golden chair. It is Christ crucified. As Scripture says of Christ, “He was not yet glorified.”
It is a great thing. And so this shows that the Cross is something great, something honorable. I remember when I was going to Albania in 1940. The first battle had taken place there, above the Kalamas River, and our men had suffered a terrible slaughter. They were buried here and there, scattered everywhere. We even stepped over them, but wherever I looked I would find two boards, two pieces of wood, nailed together in the shape of a cross. It did not matter if half the body was exposed, or one leg, or the head. Our men had managed to place a wooden cross over each one. We Orthodox accept that this same cross should also be placed at the head of our grave. And what we call the grave of an Orthodox Christian...
prominently and proudly bears the Precious Cross. And when a person departs with faith in the Precious Cross, having lived here and done all that the Crucified One commanded him through the Cross, he does not fear death. He believes that one day this grave will open. This Cross will shine and yield up what it was given to guard during the time between death, the Second Coming, and the Resurrection. Yet many of us, although we have a marble cross above our heads, are unworthy of it, because we made no use of it in this world—neither the Cross nor the Crucified One. We cast aside our cross.
This evening I spoke to you about the three kinds of crosses: crosses we make for ourselves, crosses Christ permits, and crosses we take up voluntarily in imitation of the Cross. We have cast aside our cross in this world. Virginity is a cross—away with virginity. And therefore, away with the Cross. Bearing children is a cross—away with bearing children, away with the Cross. Fasting is a cross; self-restraint is a cross; the cross, the cross, the cross. Well, when we do not put these things into practice, we are saying, “Away with the Cross,” and by extension, “Away with the Crucified One.” And when a person departs this life without Christ, and without the life and power of the Cross, then however fine the marble cross they place over our head when we die, we do not deserve it, and it will be of no benefit. Why? Because at the Second Coming, my beloved, remember this: the crosses of the faithful will shine.
They will shine, like torches that we often see struck one against another: one catches fire, while the others remain mere charcoal. The other crosses will remain like dead charcoal, fixed in place, because what they will bring forth from within is not a dove, but a raven. The grave is the safest place to entrust what you have. No one can steal from it, deceive it, or destroy it. Whatever you give it, that is what it will return. Whatever you give it to keep, that is what it will return to you at your judgment. It will bring forth a dove—as I said earlier, it will bring forth a dove. If you gave it metanoia, repentance,
You gave love, righteousness, humility, self-control, fasting, confession, and Holy Communion; then the Kingdom of Heaven awaits you, when the tomb opens and gives back what it has hidden within. But if you are indifferent and live only for this life here, do not expect it. For Hell and Paradise begin here. Hell and Paradise are not simply there, as some people say; they begin here. Each person shapes his own life beyond the grave. Of course, this life here is nothing compared with what that life is and how great it is. And yet this present life has such power and such far-reaching consequences.
this fleeting life, this brief flash like a firefly, has upon eternity.
Listen... I say this from a little personal experience. When some people hear these words, they say, “Yes, but...” They turn the “yes” into a “but.” Yes, but—we are young, we have jobs, we left our homeland to come here and work. Can we really sit down now and do these things? They require effort, they require time, they require so many things. We immigrants cannot do these things. Let me tell you something. If death existed only back in your homeland, then do whatever you like here. But I know that death is here too, and therefore there is no excuse in the face of it. Thank you.
It has gone astray, and it must come back—back to the straight path. Even if it has gone too far to the right, because many people imagine they are already sanctified, it is in our hands to turn it around and bring it back to the right path. Just as we departed, so we must return. We must find the time, and our “yes” must remain “yes” and not become “yes, but.” For when “yes” becomes “yes, but,” you remove Christ from the middle; you take away the Lord—the capital K at the beginning of the Greek word kalá, “yes.” “Yes, but”: you remove the Lord and say, “These things cannot be done.” They can be done, if you are willing. Once, a little girl asked her mother, “Mama, will you go to Paradise?” She replied, “My child, as you know, I struggle, I pray, I go to Confession and to Church, I fast, and I receive Holy Communion.”
“I hope,” she says, “in the grace of God, if He wills, that I will go to Paradise.” “Mama,” the little girl says, “will I go to Paradise too?” “God willing, my child,” she says. “If you too follow what our Lord teaches, then God willing.” “We’ll go to Paradise together, Mama. But Papa won’t come.” “Why, my child? Why won’t Papa come?”
“Daddy has to look after the shop; he doesn’t have time to come.”
Daddy has his shop; he has no time to come. But it may be the mother who has the shop, or the daughter. We have our work, our fleshly concerns, the world, money, fashion, drink, and embraces. Daddy has his shop; he has no time to come. And Daddy will not come. I do not know whether this may offer some small help in correcting the mistaken way we have judged these things. In any case, let us remain here until this evening and, God willing, we shall see one another again tomorrow.

Αλήθεια, ομίλησε για το Χριστό ή για τους κακούργους; Γιατί ο Χριστός ανέβη ως κακούργος, όχι κακούργος. Είναι επικατάρατο το ξύλο καθεαυτό; Όχι, ψεύδεσθε. Κακώς ερμηνεύεις. Το ξύλο αυτό καθεαυτό ούτε καλό ούτε κακό. Τι φταίει το ξύλο; Πώς είναι επικατάρατο το ξύλο; Γίνεται επικατάρατο κατά αναλογίαν του αίματος, κατά αναλογίαν εκείνου που θα καρφωθεί επάνω. Των δύο ληστών οι σταυροί είναι επικατάρατοι, διότι δέχτηκαν αίμα κακούργων, αίμα ληστών. Λοιπόν, αλλά ο μεσαίος Σταυρός, που εποτίσθη με το αναμάρτητο αίμα, με το θεϊκό αίμα, είναι η κατάρα των ξύλων ή είναι Τίμιον Ξύλο;
έγραψε ένα χαρτί, σηκώθηκε και πήγε τα μεσάνυχτα στο νεκροταφείο του. Το πέταξε στον αέρα, το έκαμε μια ψήφο εκεί, το πέταξε στον αέρα, αλλά βλέπει ότι σατανάδες επιτίθενται σαν θεριά να του αρπάξουν αυτό το χαρτί. Όταν είδε, μπορεί να το καταλάβει, από αυτοσυντήρηση σηκώνει το χέρι του και κάνει τον σταυρό του αυτό το παλικάρι. Γιατί, ξέρετε, αν μας έδειχνε την όψη του ο διάβολος, κανένας δεν θα τον άκουγε και κανένας δεν θα τον ακολουθούσε. Άρα, το κρύβει και έρχεται μόνο με γλυκόλογα και μας λέει. Ξέρετε τι μου έλεγε, με συγχωρείτε, πέρα από το ένα και πάω στο άλλο, μία δεσποινίς στην Αθήνα;
