Summary
The lecture presents the Holy and Life-Giving Cross as a divinely prepared symbol foreshadowed throughout the Old Testament and fulfilled in Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection. The Cross is described as Satan’s defeat because he perceived Christ’s death but failed to foresee the Resurrection and the destruction of his power. The movement of the sign of the Cross is explained as a confession of the Incarnation through the Theotokos, Christ’s Ascension, His promised Second Coming, and the completion of the divine economy.

By the grace of the Lord, let us continue this evening with a few thoughts on the subject of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross.
After all the other things we have shown to belong to our Tradition—things that remind us of the truth and of what we must take care to preserve—and after the subject of our Most Holy Theotokos, on which we spoke at length, we presented the subject
of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. We spoke of it almost as a living person, which, as we said, weaves its way through history and has been present since the foundation of the world, even from Paradise itself. There are types, images, and prophecies of this precious wood, understood as we understand it, and not merely as a piece of wood that can be called an instrument of death, as some describe it to us. If you remember our previous talk, we began with the wood in Paradise, and then continued chronologically to Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac. Isaac carried the wood upon which his father was to sacrifice him, while his father clearly prefigured God the Father,
who, about eighteen hundred years later, would offer His own Only-Begotten Son on Golgotha. The details of that event are very vivid, and, as we said, we can calmly read this account and this type in the twenty-second chapter of Genesis. Then there is the wood of Sabek, where the ram was caught. The ram was a type of Christ, while Sabek is interpreted as “the wood of forgiveness,” prefiguring the Precious Cross. And since we are still looking back there, many centuries before Christ, we can consider another aspect and see that the Precious Cross already existed then in symbolic form.
You can find it, if you wish, in the twelfth chapter of Exodus, where the events of the Jewish Passover are described. This is how the Jewish Passover was observed. It is, after all, called Passover. I want you to understand that this was written some 1,450 years before Christ. Passover is not something we invented. “Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us,” says Paul. At the Jewish Passover, however, a lamb was sacrificed, and that Passover was a type of our own Passover, this eternal Passover. That symbolic lamb was a type of Christ, who was to be sacrificed. Do you know how the Jews were commanded to eat it?
“You shall not eat it raw,” it says, “nor shall you eat it boiled, but roasted with fire.”
None of its bones was to be broken. Now, for this to be done—for approximately three million Jews to eat on the very night of the Exodus—how were they to roast it with fire? The most practical way was on a spit. The spit we still use today to roast the lamb at Pascha goes all the way back there. Make a spit and place a lamb on it. You need one straight piece of wood, and at the back you need another piece, shaped like the letter tau, so that you can turn it around and around. Now stand it upright. What is it? It is a cross, is it not? Take that piece of wood, drive it through the lamb's head, and roast the lamb upon it.
The lamb and the human figure are one and the same. Spread out the lamb's two hind legs and its two forelegs, and it resembles a man. Drive the spit in through the lamb's head so that it comes out below, stand it upright, and spread out its hind legs and forelegs. Will you not see Christ Crucified? Thus, even then, that wood was a type of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross.
It is not, as some imagine, something we invented and may simply cast aside. When a symbol has such a long sacred history behind it, that means it is something serious. But the one who suffers harm from the presence and power of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross is Satan. He wants it removed by every possible means, because he cannot bear to see it. When he sees the Cross, he remembers the Crucified One. When he sees the Cross, he remembers Golgotha.
Satan did not see or understand these things until he had Christ put out of the way and raised upon the Cross. But he did not see that beyond the Cross lay the Resurrection. As the sacred John Chrysostom says, Satan saw what was visible, but fell because of what he could not see. Could he ever have imagined that this man was also God? When, on Great and Holy Thursday, he heard Him say, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death,” and, “Let this cup pass from Me,” he thought, “Then He is not God. He is merely a righteous man; let us put Him to death.” But when Satan saw the signs—the earthquake, the darkness, and the tombs opening—he realized that things were not as he had thought. “Come down!” But Christ answers, as it were, “No, I will not come down now. Now I will crush your head.” Our Church reminds us of this beautifully, especially in our Orthodox worship, throughout the entire period of Pentecost, when the priest
always holds a candle and a cross in his hand. The candle is placed behind the cross and tied to it with a red ribbon. This is Satan's Waterloo, his total defeat. Satan, you could see only as far as the Cross; you could not see the Resurrection behind the Cross. And the red ribbon is His blood. This is what the Cross shows Satan and continually reminds him of. This is why he hates it and seeks by every means to remove the Cross, because he cannot bear to remember the Crucified One. Besides the examples I have just given you, anyone—a Christian, a believer—who searches chronologically for the Cross, in order to understand what was said about it and how it bears the approval of Jesus, and that its veneration is not idolatry, as some claim, will find it in the twenty-first chapter of Numbers.
Moses was leading the people through the wilderness. The people murmured against God and against Moses. God fed them with manna, as it says there, but they preferred to return to the fleshpots of Egypt and eat leeks, garlic, and onions. They did not like the manna. “Our soul loathes it,” they said. What did you loathe, O Hebrews? What did you loathe? The manna? Was it lacking some ingredient? It was angelic food, for that is precisely what it was. When they spoke in this way against the manna—which was a type of the Body and Blood of Christ in the New Testament, as Christ Himself said—the twenty-first chapter of Numbers tells us that
serpents appeared among their tents and began biting them, and the people began dying in great numbers. The whole place was filled with the stench of death. Terrified, they came to Moses and begged him to entreat God to remove the serpents from the camp. God received Moses' supplication, but He did not remove the serpents. Instead, He showed him a remedy. He said, “Make a large, shining bronze serpent and fasten it upon a piece of wood. Set it down there in the open plain, where the sun will shine upon it. Whenever someone is bitten by a serpent,”
He said, “let him look upon the serpent, and he shall not die, but live.”
While here on earth, Christ took up this event and spoke of it Himself, referring to the Old Testament. We hear this passage, found in the third chapter of John, on the Sunday before the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness upon a piece of wood, so the Son of Man had to be lifted up, so that whoever is bitten—not by that material serpent,
but by the spiritual serpent, Satan—might not die, but live. Christ Himself therefore gave authority and honor to the Precious Cross. How can we accept Christ on the one hand, yet on the other reject what He said about the Precious Cross? We are mistaken; we commit sin, if nothing else—without going any further into it. Christ Himself refers to this. Read it and pay attention to it. Since Satan will exploit some people because they do not understand exactly how these things are to be understood, I would like to make a distinction. Some say—and I hope this thought is not found among you—“There we see a serpent and a piece of wood. Do you see Christ here and the Cross there? Surely not.”
Can the serpent really represent Christ? We know that the serpent is Satan. “The ancient serpent, who is called Satan,” says the Apocalypse, as the Holy Spirit explains this connection and this name. Yes, that is true. So what are we to understand, and where does the meaning lie? Some people say, “If I see Him represented as a lamb, I understand it: the Lamb of God, the lamb led before its shearer, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,” and so forth. A lamb, yes—but not both a lamb and a serpent. Yet did that bronze serpent have venom? It had no venom; it was made of bronze. It was only the likeness of a serpent, was it not?
You could embrace it and touch it, and it even had the power to neutralize the serpent's venom. Whoever looked upon that serpent raised on the wood would not die, but live. Why, then, is Christ presented in this way? Because upon the Cross Christ appeared as a serpent, as an evildoer though He was no evildoer, as lawless though He was not lawless, and as a sinner though He was without sin. This is where the comparison lies. Therefore, do not be scandalized. Holy Scripture has made no mistake, and Christ has made no mistake; the mistakes are ours. If someone then wishes to find other images of the power of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, he will come to a miracle performed by the Prophet Elisha
for the son of the Shunammite woman, the mistress of the house. Through Elisha's prayer, God had given her the child she had not had, and afterward the child died. The poor woman went to Elisha and complained to him, saying, “Why did you not leave me in the sorrow I already knew? You gave me a child, and now God has taken my child away. Before this, I had never known the sweetness of having a child.” She would not leave Elisha and, in a manner of speaking, compelled him to go with her. In any case, this whole account is a lesson in itself: how Elisha first sent Gehazi with his staff, and so forth, to raise the child, but the child did not rise; then Elisha himself arrived, despite his advanced age. And what do you think he did? He took the dead child as he lay there and spread out his arms. He spread out the child's arms.
When a person's arms are spread out, the human body forms a cross. And what does Elisha do? Below lies the dead person—dead humanity, represented in the person of the Shunammite woman's child. Elisha stretches himself upon the child: his body upon the child's body, his eyes upon the child's eyes, his hands upon the child's hands, and his body upon the child's body. He imparts warmth to the dead child, and in this way the child rises. In other words, the living Crucified One, Christ, raises humanity—dead humanity—to life. It is such a vivid image, clearly revealing the power of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. There are other examples as well. Another concerns a different miracle performed by Elisha, when...
There by the Jordan, a man went to cut wood. He had borrowed the axe, and as he was cutting, the iron head came loose and flew into the river. The Jordan is deep, and he was left holding the wooden handle—with no wages for his work and owing someone else an axe. Elisha saw him, went over, and asked, “What has happened to you?” The man told him what had happened. “Where is the wood—the handle?” he asked. “Where do you have it?” “Here.” So Elisha took the wooden handle from him. “And where did the other part fall—the axe head, the iron?” The man showed him the place. The Jordan may have been three, four, or five meters deep; Elisha himself had crossed it. And what did Elisha do? He threw the wood into the river. Normally, the wood should have sunk to the bottom.
The wood went down into the depths, fastened itself to the iron, and brought the iron up. Instead of the iron dragging the wood down, and instead of the river carrying the wood away, the wood brought the iron to the surface. What is the iron? Sin. What is the Jordan? Humanity. Why did Christ enter the Jordan? Why did He turn back the waters, so that they would no longer flow toward the Dead Sea, but toward the Jerusalem above? Why did these things happen? This is the power of the Cross. It brought up and removed the sin that lay within humanity. So how is it that this wood, this type, was spoken of for five thousand or five and a half thousand years
throughout all that time, until Christ came to be crucified? Were they speaking about all this for no reason? And now a few little upstarts come along, cast it aside, and say, “What is this thing you are doing? Aren’t you ashamed, as a modern, enlightened person, to make these scratches in the air before you? Aren’t you ashamed?” No, my child; this is a serious matter. They say, “It has no power. It is nothing. We should not do it. We should not confess anything through it.” But when I make the sign of the Cross, am I not confessing Christ Crucified? Or was Christ not crucified? Christ was indeed crucified. I do not know whether you also remember another instance, one that is not accidental. I mention such examples incidentally; I am not exhausting the whole subject. I simply offer you another example so that you may see the power of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross. You will find this, as I told you, in the fifteenth chapter of Exodus. It says there that... Thank you very much.
As they journeyed from Egypt toward the Promised Land, they encountered many enemies along the way. On one occasion, they were forced to fight against the Amalekites. Moses instructed Joshua, his successor—his second-in-command, as we might say—to gather soldiers, muster men from among the people, and go to the front. Moses himself would climb the mountain. And which mountain was it? The third peak of Mount Sinai, at an elevation of 8,700 feet, where the relic of Saint Catherine remained for a thousand years. Beside it is another, lower peak, at 5,700 feet...
There is the Holy Summit, where Moses received the tablets bearing the word of God; and nearby is another, lower peak, where Moses went up, raised his hands, and prayed. While he prayed, his people fought and prevailed. But whenever he grew tired and lowered his hands, the enemy would drive them back again. Aaron saw this—and pay attention to the details; nothing here is meaningless—Aaron, his brother, saw it, and so did Hur, Miriam’s husband. And what did they do?
They took Moses and seated him on a stone upon the mountain. One stood on one side and held up one of his hands, while the other stood on the opposite side and held up the other hand. And what did they form? They formed a cross. They supported him in this way because he was tired and could no longer hold up his hands, until evening, when the sun went down. And so they destroyed the Amalekites. Do we understand this? You often see an Alpha and an Omega in the halo of our Lord. You have heard Christ say, “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” And on that cross at Sinai, which I have just described to you, you see A and O: Aaron and Hur. Have you noticed it? Do the things I am telling you require still more proof?
Do we need any more evidence, my beloved?
And I repeat, these are not the only types. Therefore, we Orthodox must take heed of this weapon, which we have cast aside somewhere—if indeed we are not actually blaspheming it—and restore it to its proper place. For there is no Christ without the Cross; Christ cannot be understood apart from the Crucified One. We must pay attention to these things, because if we do not, we shall face difficult times. In any case, there is yet another example.
Isaac went down into Egypt—rather, Jacob went down into Egypt. I do not know whether you have read how Joseph the All-Comely brought his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, before him. Holy Scripture says that he placed them in front of Jacob to receive his blessing. Ordinarily, Jacob should have laid his right hand on the firstborn and his left hand on the younger. But instead he crossed his hands. Joseph questioned him—or rather, tried to stop him—saying, “No, father, not that way.” But Jacob answered him, in effect, “You do not understand what I am forming here.” And even there
the Crucified One is prefigured: Christ would descend from Jacob, from the tribe of Judah, from his own loins. Joseph also bowed before Jacob’s staff, low to the ground; there is something in the Psalms about “the footstool of His feet,” though I do not remember the exact wording. What I am telling you is simply some of the evidence among the types found in the Old Testament, which reveal to us the mystery of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross. Following these scriptural reflections, let me now share with you some teachings of holy men concerning the subject before us.
Before me I have a statement from Tertullian, who lived from the year 160 to 245. He was an apologist and a Father of the Church. He says that the Cross was used in every circumstance of life: when people rose from bed, when they dressed, when they prepared to sleep, before lying down, when they left the house, when they lit a lamp, at the table, at the beginning of every undertaking, and before setting out on a journey. Ignatius the God-Bearer, an Apostolic Father, also says the following—and I have the text before me and am reading it to you. He was martyred in the year 107. You have concrete evidence here. And now we are expected to wait fifteen centuries for someone to call the Cross “an instrument of murder” and to tell us whether the Holy Cross has power or not. Listen to what he says.
“For the ruler of this world rejoices.” Who is this ruler? The devil. And when does he rejoice, Saint Ignatius? When someone denies the Cross. That is what makes him rejoice; that is precisely what he wants. “Let every one of his own recognize the confession of the Cross, for this is the trophy of victory over his power; when he sees it, he trembles, and when he hears of it, he is afraid.” And John Chrysostom, in his own manner, says that what was once accursed and abhorred, the symbol of the ultimate punishment—of which it was said that everyone hanging upon a tree is accursed—
“has now become radiant and greatly beloved. For no royal crown adorns the head as does the Cross, which is more precious than the whole world.” Therefore he exhorts us: “Let us all bear the Cross upon our foreheads, not only without shame, but glorying in it.” We should not merely be unashamed to make the sign of the Cross; we should rejoice and count it an honor that we are Christians and make the sign of the Cross. “Glorying in it; for not only ordinary people, but even those who wear royal diadems bear it upon their foreheads above their diadems.” Elsewhere he says, “Everywhere the symbol of the Cross stands before us: upon houses, upon walls, and upon windows.”
“Let us inscribe it upon our foreheads and upon our understanding with great care.” Many people who do not have the strength to make the sign of the Cross with their hand make it by moving their head; and if even that is too weak, they trace the Holy Cross inwardly, within their nous, the spiritual intellect. Satan, who is a spirit, recoils and flees. “Let us bring it to our bed, to our table, and everywhere we may be.” Anthony the Great also drove out demons through the Holy Cross, declaring that the power was not his own. It is written: “He sealed those who suffered with the sign of the Cross a second and a third time, and immediately, having returned to soundness of mind, they blessed the Lord.” Here is another historical testimony, as I see it written before me.
Photios the Great of Constantinople, Jerome, Saint John of Damascus, and many others all speak about the Holy Cross. There is even a Canon of the Sixth Ecumenical Council instructing us to treat the Holy Cross with care—the seventy-third Canon: “Since the Life-Giving Cross has shown us salvation, we must use every diligence to render it the honor that is its due, for through it we have been saved from the ancient transgression. Therefore, with nous, word, and sense, we offer it veneration.” The Canon also says that when people carelessly make images of crosses on the ground, we must remove them so that they are not trampled underfoot.
Consequently, the Holy Cross is no simple matter. Since it was prefigured in such a manner and so much preparation was made for it, it must be treated with reverence. I would now like to turn to several other, practical matters concerning the Holy and Life-Giving Cross, because many of us have not considered it as carefully as we should. We Orthodox ought to pay attention, yet we do not. Suppose we sat, as our Lord sat opposite the treasury, watching not how much people put into the offering box, but how they put it in. He valued the widow’s two small coins above everything the others had offered.
If we likewise watched how many people come and make the sign of the Cross, we would find that perhaps five percent actually form a cross. A seal has no validity when its imprint is not distinct. A person must know how to make the sign of the Cross. He must join three fingers together, because he is confessing the three hypostases of the Godhead—the Holy Trinity, whose Persons are equal in honor. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit do not differ in essence. Where the Father is, there also are the Son and the Spirit; where the Spirit is, there also are the Son and the Father...
and where the Son is, there also are the Father and the Spirit. They are equal in honor: God, the consubstantial Holy Trinity. This is why we join these three fingers. The other two represent the human and divine natures of Jesus. At one point, one Person of the three became incarnate, and thus the two natures were united in Him. This is beautifully symbolized by our Holy Church when the living icon of Christ is present—the bishop in the Church, who is the living icon of Christ. You will have noticed that the hierarch is censed first and then the icon of Christ. He holds the dikirion and trikirion in his hands—two candles and three—and blesses “this vineyard.” We, then, must join our fingers correctly and place them upon our forehead.
We must not make the sign somewhere in the air; we must touch our forehead. In this way, we confess that God—the Triune God of Orthodoxy—is without beginning. The head has no beginning; it is round and has no corners. The God without beginning once became man in the womb of the Theotokos, and this is symbolized by the two fingers folded here. So a person lowers his hand and touches his body calmly and attentively, knowing what he is doing and what he is confessing: that the God without beginning once became man and was incarnate in the womb of the Theotokos. There was the bridal chamber; there was the wedding chamber. What came after the womb? What happened next? The Ascension—and he moves his hand upward.
The second movement signifies the Ascension. And what do we still await? “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” Among the many truths that the sign of the Cross confesses, and that we ourselves can confess through it, this is its most practical and most dogmatic meaning and interpretation. Consequently, as I shall explain, a person who makes some other shape—not out of irreverence, but through carelessness or ignorance—does not confess what he ought to confess. The God without beginning became man, ascended, and shall come again to judge the living and the dead. Thus the work of the Divine Economy is brought to completion, because I believe you know
There is still one more link in the chain of events of the divine economy: the promise that the Holy God gave us through the angels when Christ departed from Bethany at the Ascension, leaving the imprint of His feet there: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, whom you see taken up from you into heaven, will come again in the same manner.” The second “so” is written with an omega: He will come in precisely the same way. He who departed into the heavens today will return. This is what we await. When this too takes place—His Second Coming—“in the same manner as you saw Him go from you,” the divine economy will be complete, and its final link will be set in place.
Then, if you will permit the expression, “every rogue will be sent back to his own bench.” Beyond that point there will be no more buying or shopkeeping, no more bargaining, no more trading. Whatever a person is to do must be done in this life, now. I would like to tell you a beautiful tradition concerning the Precious Cross. For there was a cross even before the Cross. When Christ says, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me,” what cross does He mean? What is this cross? What is He showing us? Clearly such a cross already existed and was understood, as Paul also says. When Abraham went up to sacrifice his child, he crucified his own will. To crucify means to put to death; to crucify means to slay. Because the Cross confesses that it is not our will but God’s will that must be done, Satan does not let us embrace it.
I would like you to know a beautiful tradition which says that the Most Holy Theotokos was the first human being to make the sign of the Cross. When did this happen? You know that the Most Holy Theotokos went “with haste” to a city of Judah to find Elizabeth and see whether she truly was pregnant, for the angel had told her that her kinswoman was in her sixth month. Being a young woman—still only a child—she set out and walked the roughly one hundred and fifty kilometres from Nazareth until she reached the hill country to see this for herself. There she received confirmation through the confession of the elderly Elizabeth, who said, “When the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the babe leaped in my womb.” Then the Most Holy Theotokos spoke those beautiful words: “My soul magnifies the Lord,” and, “My spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour,” and so forth. She remained there, Scripture says, for about three months.
Then “she returned to her own house”—hers, not his; to her own house, not to her husband’s house, as others tell us. These are profound matters. You could remain here for more than five years while we spoke about them, without anyone interrupting the mystery of mysteries contained within them. We have not even begun to unfold a single page and examine the vast field of prophecy.
Thank you. She went back down. When she returned, she was three months pregnant—a fourteen-year-old girl, thin as skin and bone. Naturally, a mother longs to see her child and runs after her with something nourishing to eat; but with a three-month pregnancy, how could this young girl conceal her condition? And then there was Saint Joseph. You have seen the events as Matthew records them and the terribly difficult position in which this man found himself. He considered sending her away, because he could not shelter what he believed to be a sin.
“Being a righteous man”—and these are the examples we need—“being a righteous man,” he was forbidden to keep an adulteress or conceal a prostitute. If we paid attention to this today, we would not feed and foster fornication and adultery. They might not disappear entirely, but they would not have reached the terrible proportions we see today. We are the ones who cover for them: we provide the room, the car, the money, the telephone, the letter, the arrangement, and the deception. We conceal them and give sin a place to thrive. This corruption of our age has set the world ablaze, and we are responsible. Joseph could not simply expose her, because she would certainly have been killed. An adulteress—a pregnant woman without a husband over her—was to be put to death according to the law of Deuteronomy. The circumstances had become desperate. She was regarded as one who had conceived through a secret union, as the hymnographer so beautifully says...
...in the Akathist Hymn. Many people gathered around her, together with the other children who were there. Then, according to this tradition—and this is the point I wish to reach—she stood before them, raised her hand, placed it upon her forehead, and said: “By the sign written upon my forehead, and by Him who dwells within my womb”—and she placed her hand upon her womb—“may the angels at my right and at my left bear witness.” I cannot persuade you, she was saying; I cannot prove to you that I am pure and that matters are not as you claim. How could they understand something supernatural? “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” and so forth. Even now, in the full twentieth century, people mock these things. Yet they came to pass, and the Christian faith arose from them.
Day and night we speak of the Most Holy Theotokos and these events, yet people still mock and insult her. So she stood there and spoke those few words, though I do not know whether they were heard. We believe that it was the angel who finally set matters right, saying: “What is happening, elder, is not accidental. It is written in Holy Scripture. Does Isaiah not say in 7:14, ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive,’ and so forth? This is what is taking place; do not be scandalised.” Joseph therefore took her under his protection, and we know that he later helped her during the flight and continued to care for her. What was the purpose? Was it to marry her, as Catholics and Protestants claim, and have other children with her? The elder Joseph was appointed as her guardian, so that outwardly she would appear to have a protector.
He was there so that she would not be stoned for being pregnant, because people would see that she had a husband, even if he was an elderly man. How could Joseph have taken such a young girl as a wife? Today we may see an elderly man marrying a seventeen-year-old girl because she expects to inherit his pension, or for some other such reason. Many things happen. But if people were willing to pay attention to these matters, they would receive abundant light. Unfortunately, they do not.
Thank you. Let us say what we have to say, and God will help us. After the few things I said last night and what I have said this evening, the conclusion I want us to reach is that the Precious Cross is not something accidental. I wanted to help people from now on—at least those listening to this talk tonight, or those who may hear it in the future, since these talks are recorded and sent to radio stations abroad, here in Australia, and elsewhere—to take care in making the sign of the Cross. You need not make three signs of the Cross every time. Make one, but make it correctly. Let it express faith; let it represent something real and bring that confession to light. As I told you, many people seem to cross themselves, yet do not truly make the sign of the Cross. May I describe a few such types, so that you can see which category you belong to? First, there are the “crooked crossers.” Do you understand? They cross themselves crookedly. They do not make a cross at all, but a crooked shape.
A crooked shape is one thing; the Cross is another.
There is a whole category of people who make a crooked shape instead of a cross. A cross is formed by the meeting of two straight lines. That is the Cross. Christ was crucified for the whole world. What form, then, should the Cross have? Byzantine iconography has preserved a form of the Cross that we often see in our homeland, especially on pharmacies: it has four equal arms and fits within a square. This is usually presented as the Byzantine Cross, and when a souvenir or keepsake is given to someone, this is generally the kind of cross that is made. At least, that is how we made it until recently. Now we lengthen its lower arm so that there is room for Christ’s legs.
That is the reason for the longer lower arm. We do not reject it, but the Cross should have four arms extending equally in the four directions, because it is a type of man: of the first man and the last Man, of Adam and Christ. Christ, the new Adam, came to heal what had been shattered through the first Adam. What did God say to Adam? “Be fruitful and multiply, and have dominion over the earth.” How is the name Adam interpreted? The interpreters give several explanations, but one of the most significant is this: the word Adam is formed from the initial letters of the four points of the horizon in Greek—East, West, North, and South. Adam was destined for all four corners of the earth.
Christ came afterward and was crucified for all four corners of the earth. He was not crucified more for one person and less for another. That is why I say that the Cross consists of two straight lines intersecting one another. So make the sign of the Cross correctly: from your forehead to your abdomen, down to your navel, and then to both shoulders. Touch each place properly, so that the seal is clearly impressed. Make it correctly. You need not make it three times; even once is enough. But take care. Drive away the devil who sits upon your arm and will not let you raise your hand. Pay attention: do not make it crookedly; make the sign of the Cross properly. Thus, as I said, there is one category of people whom we might call the crooked crossers. There is another category who ought to be called the “secret crossers.”
These are the people who are ashamed. They make some hidden movement beneath their jacket or cross themselves inside their pocket. Women put on a cardigan and make the sign of the Cross underneath it. So long as you are ashamed before the world to confess Christ, you are not living as Christians. How, then, will you say tomorrow, “Most Holy Theotokos, help me”? How will you help your child tomorrow if the child becomes possessed or suffers some calamity? What will you do? Do such people not exist? Of course they do: the secret crossers, who hide the Crucified One and do not confess Him. If you do not confess the Crucified One through the Cross, what will happen? Your faith remains theory and never becomes action. The school of Christ has theory, as other schools do, but it also has practical examinations. We shall see what happens when the test comes. Another category is the “short crossers.” You mention the Cross, and they make a tiny, half-hearted motion here.
They barely raise the hand and make a few tiny darting movements. These are the short crossers. Whatever we may call the category, we have already established the proper points: the forehead, the navel, and the two shoulders. This shows that a person is confessing Christ, his Crucified Lord. Another category might be called the “guitar players.” There are many of these as well—both ladies and young women, forgive me. Their carelessness produces such a gesture. It is true, and we ought to be ashamed. Permit me to say it: it is true, and we ought to be ashamed...
...to call ourselves Christians. The movement of the two hands resembles someone playing a guitar, because they have never cared enough to learn even one simple lesson. These, then, are the guitar players.
They play their guitar, and they cannot deny it. Then there is another category: the makers of incredible shapes. They form the most extraordinary designs in front of themselves. I do not know whether you have seen those strange figures made during Christmas festivities; the gestures are something like that. Ask such a person, “What did you just make?” and he cannot tell you. He has made nothing recognisable. These are impossible shapes; you cannot even determine what they are meant to be. Yet these people are Orthodox Christians. They carry a candle at Pascha and light great tapers as though they were very devout. There is also another category, the so-called “long crossers,” whom we mock by saying, “Look at him making those long signs of the Cross.” I know how people speak.
Faith is required if the sign of the Cross is truly to be made. A person may make it correctly, touch his hand to the ground in a metanoia—a prostration—then make the sign again and touch the ground once more. These are the people who make long signs of the Cross. Of course, a corresponding way of life must accompany this. Some of us make a long sign of the Cross but also have a long tongue; we become a bad example. Do you understand? The Cross should drive sin far away. It may indeed be made with a large movement, if one’s health, age, surroundings, and location permit it. This shows that something deeper is taking place within that person than in the other cases I described earlier. Yet you know that people sometimes accuse us when our lives are inconsistent.
They say, “What good are your long signs of the Cross if you do this, break up that relationship, steal, treat another person unjustly, estrange your child, refuse to have children, fail to fast, and blaspheme? What use are all these gestures?” That is where they catch us. Those who make long signs of the Cross are indeed doing something good, but when it is accompanied by a corresponding way of life, then it is truly right. Finally, there are the “proper crossers”: those who make the sign normally, neither in a tiny motion nor in an exaggerated one, but make a proper sign of the Cross before their icon.
When they pass by a church, or when they are about to enter and do enter the church, they make the sign of the Cross properly and attentively. The same should happen whenever the priest or the chanter gives the cue—though, unfortunately, our chanters do not always do this. Some of them signal to the people to raise their hands and make the sign of the Cross when they chant, “the Godhead in Three Hypostases,” “Glory to the Father and to the Son,” certain other troparia, or the polyeleos of the Saint being commemorated. At such moments we must be attentive. But this requires a struggle, because we have received no catechesis. They baptized us and then, as we say, turned us loose in the wilderness. Do you understand? Nor did we ourselves take any interest. We learned foreign languages, we learned the piano, we learned how to reach the stars—we learned everything. Yet we did not learn to make one proper sign of the Cross, because none of those other things troubles Satan. But he cannot bear to see the Cross. That is precisely why, if he cannot take it away from us altogether, he distorts its shape so that no true Cross is made. He does not want to hear of it or see it. Pay attention to this, I beg you.
I am speaking about this in your church now because many people do not pay attention to it. Many also sit down at the table to eat without making the sign of the Cross. They do not even say a short prayer. And I remember a humorous story that I would like you to take to heart. Those who especially fail to do this are people eating in restaurants and tavernas. At home they may make half a sign of the Cross, put up some little icon, mumble a few empty words, or something of that sort. But when they are out in public, they do not make the sign of the Cross. They cannot confess the Crucified One. Satan prevents you. They are ashamed to say that they are Christians. And they eat, though even the chickens will testify against them tomorrow, because when chickens drink water, they lift their heads toward God; they acknowledge Him. We think everything belongs to us because it is in our refrigerator. But for your refrigerator to have food in it, Someone else must provide and grant prosperity. If He does not provide, the refrigerator will be empty, just as it was during the years of the Occupation.
We lived through that in Greece. I bring you this story from Mytilene—I do not know whether anyone here is from there. More precisely, I bring it from Karlovasi on Samos. An elderly village woman had been summoned as a witness. Some dispute had broken out in the village, and they required her to go down and testify. How was that poor old woman to make the journey? In any case, she had to go, and so she went. It was Wednesday, a fasting day. The court proceedings ended around noon. She missed the midday bus back to her village and had to wait for the evening one. But what was she to eat? She had expected to return home and had brought nothing with her. So she went into a little taverna, carrying her small bag with a little bread in it, and looked to see whether the owner had anything she could eat. He had a pot of beans. She asked him, “Do they contain oil?” “No, grandmother,” he said, “they do not.” “Then give me a serving of them, my child,” she said.
He served her a portion, and she sat at one of those iron taverna tables and ate her beans. Nearby, at a larger table, two or three young men were sitting with two or three young women. They were eating lamb chops—not their own ribs, of course—and drinking beer and Coca-Cola, as we would say today. The grandmother stood up as though she were at home and nothing unusual were happening. She rose, made the sign of the Cross three times, sat down, and ate. Then she called the waiter and paid the bill. She stood again and made the sign of the Cross three times, just as though she were at home, as though no one were watching her, as though she were not out in the marketplace or anywhere public. She made the sign of the Cross three more times and prepared to leave. Then one brazen young woman, encouraged by the others, said to her, “What is all this, grandmother? Aren’t you ashamed? Don’t you know what age we live in now?” and so on. The grandmother calmly turned and looked at them. “What did you say, children?” she asked.
“What is all this stuff you’re doing over there, making such a fuss?” “Look, forgive me, but I will tell you. My children,” she said, “this is what distinguishes donkeys from human beings.” Thank you.
That is what the grandmother said—forgive me. That is what she said. And now, my beloved, I shall finish with another story. A man once insulted the Cross in the presence of a giaour, a Greek. This happened in Smyrna. A Turkish policeman arrested him and took him before the qadi, straight to court. When his case was called, the qadi asked the policeman, “What did this man do that you brought him here?” “He insulted the Cross in the presence of that giaour,” the policeman replied. “You insulted the Cross?” the qadi asked him. “You insulted man himself?” Then he lifted the man’s trouser legs and said, “Can you not see that the human being is shaped like a cross? You insulted a human being, and in doing so you insulted all humanity.” And with great leniency he sentenced him to...
One month in prison. “If you come before me again,” he told him, “I will cut off your legs.” The Turks do not blaspheme. If you blaspheme in Turkey, you will be tried and sent to prison. And afterward they tell you, “Ask Muhammad to get you out.” Silence. Secondly, I am not speaking about blasphemers. That is not what I am addressing here. There may even be blasphemers among us who revile the Precious Cross. I wanted to say only one thing: through what I said yesterday and today, as its grace and power permitted, we can understand why our Church asks for the intercessions of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. You speak of it first even in relation to man. Do you understand what this means? It is a great thing, yet we do not heed our Mother, the Church. What I mean is this: beware of the propaganda directed against the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. And let us show by our actions that we believe in the Cross and, of course, in the Crucified One, who bestowed infinite power upon the Cross. That is all for this evening.

Τον συναντά κανείς, εάν θελήσει, στο δωδέκατο κεφάλαιο της Εξόδου, εκεί που αναφέρονται τα περιστατικά του Πάσχα των Εβραίων. Το Πάσχα των Εβραίων γίνεται ως εξής. Λέγεται άλλωστε Πάσχα. Θέλω να ξέρετε ότι υπάρχει 1.450 χρόνια π.Χ. γραμμένο. Πάσχα δεν είναι που το βρήκαμε εμείς. «Το Πάσχα ημών ετύθη Χριστός», λέει ο Παύλος, αλλά το Πάσχα των Εβραίων ετύθη αμνός και το Πάσχα των Εβραίων είχε σχέση, ήταν τύπος του Πάσχα του δικού μας, του αιωνίου αυτού Πάσχα. Ο αμνός ο συμβολικός εκείνος, που είναι τύπος του Χριστού μας, που θα εθυσιάζετο. Ξέρετε πώς είχε δοθεί εντολή να το τρώνε οι Εβραίοι;
Να είναι ο Χριστός; Εμείς ξέρουμε ο όφις είναι ο σατανάς. «Ο όφις ο αρχαίος, ο λεγόμενος σατανάς», λέγει στην Αποκάλυψη, ερμηνεύοντας το Πνεύμα το Άγιο αυτή τη σχέση και την ονομασία. Ναι, είναι. Τι μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε, πού μπορούμε να το καταλάβουμε; Είναι το εξής σημείο, γιατί ορισμένοι σου λένε: «Να τον δω αμνόν το καταλαβαίνω. Ο αμνός του Θεού, ο αμνός ο ερχόμενος ενώπιον του κείροντος, ο αμνός ο εσφαγμένος από καταβολής κόσμου» και λοιπά και λοιπά. Αμνός· όχι και το ένα και το άλλο. Ο όφις εκείνος είχε δηλητήριο; Δεν είχε δηλητήριο· χαλκώμα ήταν, ομοίωμα όφεως δεν ήταν;
Η Αγία Κορυφή, που πήρε τις πλάκες με τον λόγο του Θεού ο Μωυσής, και παραπλήσια από εκεί υπάρχει άλλη χαμηλότερη κορυφή, όπου ανέβη ο Μωυσής και σήκωσε τα χέρια του και προσηύχετο. Και καθ’ ην στιγμή αυτός προσηύχετο, οι δικοί του πολεμούσαν και νικούσαν. Όταν κουραζότανε και κατέβαζε τα χέρια του κάτω, τους παίρναν φαλάγγι πάλι οι άλλοι από εκεί. Αυτό το είδε ο Ααρών — προσέχετε τις λεπτομέρειες· «πας το παιδάκι, το παιδάκι θα κλάσει» δεν υπάρχει — ο Ααρών, ο αδελφός του, το είδε, και ο Ωρ, ο γαμπρός της Μαριάμ, άντρας, το είδε. Και τι έκαναν;
Πιάνουνε τον Μωυσή και τον καθίζουνε απάνω σε μια πέτρα, απάνω στο βουνό. Και κάθεται ο ένας από το ένα μέρος και του κρατεί το χέρι, και κάθεται ο άλλος από το άλλο μέρος και του κρατεί το χέρι. Και τι φτιάξανε; Φτιάξανε έναν σταυρό. Και έτσι τον κρατήσανε εκεί, γιατί κουραζότανε, δεν μπορούσε, μέχρι το βράδυ που έπεσε ο ήλιος. Και έτσι τους εξολόθρευσαν, τους Αμαληκίτες. Το καταλαβαίνουμε αυτό; Αυτός, βλέπετε, επάνω του Κυρίου μας το φωτοστέφανο, ένα Α και Ω πολλές φορές. Έχετε ακούσει τον Χριστό μας που λέγει «Εγώ είμαι το Α και το Ω». Έχετε δει στον σταυρό εκεί επάνω που σας είπα τώρα, στο Σινά, Α και Ω· Ααρών και Ωρ. Το έχετε δει; Θέλει περισσότερα αποδεικτικά αυτά που σας λέγω;
Χρειάζονται περισσότερα, αγαπητοί μου, αποδεικτικά;
