Summary

Pentecost fulfills the Father’s promise fifty days after the Resurrection and ten days after the Ascension, when the Holy Spirit descended as the other Paraclete. Peter explained that the Apostles were not drunk but that Joel’s prophecy concerning the outpouring of the Spirit was being fulfilled that day. Using Noah’s dove as an image of the Holy Spirit, the lecture urges repentance, reconciliation, confession, and inner purity so that the Spirit may dwell within the faithful.

In accordance with the promise of the Father, today He fulfilled what He had promised. He had promised that, before many days had passed, He would send the fulfillment of this promise. The promise was the descent of the Holy Spirit—that is, the sending of another Paraclete, as our Christ had said. Today’s descent of the Holy Spirit is an event like Pascha, because the Holy Spirit is equal in honor to our Lord Jesus Christ, and our Church celebrates this day with the same magnificence. As you know, it is called Pentecost. This is not a name that people gave it arbitrarily or by chance. It is so called because the days are counted from the Resurrection. Today is the fiftieth day, and that is why it is called Pentecost. In other words, this event took place on the fiftieth day, counting from the Resurrection. I would like us to know that the feast of Pentecost also existed in the Old Testament, just as Pascha did.

The Jews had three great feasts: Passover, the Feast of Tabernacles, and Pentecost, which they observe to this day. Sadly, our people do not understand the significance of this day. They do not know what was accomplished in the Church, or what was sent down from Heaven in response to Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross. For if Christ had not been crucified, the Holy Spirit would not have come, and consequently we could not have been reunited with the Father. For it is the Holy Spirit who reunites us with the Father, following Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross. Jesus came,

was born, died, was buried, rose, ascended, and then the Holy Spirit came. The coming of the Holy Spirit, therefore, is the fruit of Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross. Jesus departed, and the Holy Spirit descended. He is called another Paraclete. I do not know whether you ever read about this, but there is another Paraclete. The first Paraclete is Christ Himself. That is why He said, “I will send you another Paraclete. I too am a Paraclete, but I will send you another. I will depart, and He will remain.” And today, the One who sanctifies the faithful in the Church is this Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. If there were no Holy Spirit, we would have no place here at this moment. It is the Holy Spirit who receives a person into His care,

beginning with Baptism. He cleanses that person from ancestral sin and, if the person is baptized as an adult, from sins committed willingly. This is the Paraclete who afterward cleanses a person from illness by sanctifying, for example, the oil. It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the water: “By Your Holy Spirit, sanctify this water.” A short while ago, this same Holy Spirit changed the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood, so that the faithful might be sanctified. “Send down, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth, and make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ. Amen. And that which is in this cup, the precious Blood of Your Christ. Amen.” These words were spoken inside a little while ago. It is this Holy Spirit who cleanses us from every stain—from every stain.

He helps us to pray. He helps us to understand and interpret the Scriptures. He helps us in every good work. The Holy Spirit gives us the virtues: faith, gentleness, self-control, and goodness. All these things are given by one and the same Holy Spirit. If the faithful knew what this truly meant, they would never be absent from the Church, not even from Vespers. No, they would not pick and choose the days, coming whenever and at whatever hour they pleased, and so on, unless they had a reasonable cause that made it difficult. They would come to Vespers and to Matins; they would come to the Church. For the human person has such great need of the Holy Spirit. There are blood banks in the world, and if something happens...

we immediately rush to obtain one, two, or five bottles of blood from the blood bank. There is also a treasury of the Spirit, and that is the Church. The Holy Spirit is not found out in the marketplace. He cannot be bought or sold; He is not an object of trade. You must come to the Church. Here you will receive the Holy Spirit, above all through Holy Communion. That is why it is called Holy Communion: divine communion with God. Many of us come to the Church, but only as a formality. We come simply to stand there or to receive antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Liturgy. But we do not receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is in the Body and Blood of Christ, “so that for those who partake, they may be for nepsis of soul,” and so on; “for the forgiveness of sins and for communion in the Holy Spirit.”

And so, a believer does not receive Holy Communion for one reason or another: perhaps because he does not want to abandon his sins, or because he does not want to undertake metanoia—to repent—and go to Holy Confession, and so forth; perhaps he has other superstitions, or has simply misunderstood the matter. Such a person does not receive the Holy Spirit. And afterward, without the grace of the Holy Spirit, it is difficult for a person to attain the virtues—those good things we desire for ourselves, for others, for our children, and for everyone. We demand virtues from people without the Holy Spirit, yet the virtues are the fruit of the Holy Spirit. You must love rightly—not with a merely erotic love that sends your mind flying off to the Acropolis. That is satanic love. You must rightly love your own people and even your enemy. For this, you need to have the Holy Spirit. If you do not have the Holy Spirit, you cannot do it. That is why Paul, when he wrote about the fruits

of the tree called the Holy Spirit, said in Galatians 5:22: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, goodness, kindness, gentleness, and self-control.” These are fruits of the Spirit. How, then, am I to acquire them? How can I have pears if I have no pear tree? How can I have oranges if I have no orange tree? How can I obtain them? I must have the tree if I am consequently to have its fruits. So today we do not understand what has been accomplished in the Church. We do not know what this day is, even though the Church regards it as a great and radiant day. That is why the coming week, from Monday until the Sunday of All Saints, is treated as a Bright Week. Fasting is dispensed with entirely, even on Wednesday and Friday. There is great joy because, I repeat,

the Holy Spirit is equal in honor to our Lord Jesus Christ. Exactly ten days passed from the Ascension, and then the Holy Spirit came. Today the Apostle and Evangelist Luke related these events to us in the Acts of the Apostles, from which the epistle reading was taken. The disciples were gathered behind closed doors in the Upper Room. I want you to know that the Upper Room still exists to this day. Sadly, because of our many sins, it is in Muslim hands. The Upper Room, where the disciples were and where Pentecost took place on this day, is also the place where our Christ gave us the Mystical Supper on the evening of Great and Holy Thursday. They remained there and were baptized in the Holy Spirit, just as He had told them. A cloud accompanied by a mighty sound

came upon that Upper Room and filled the whole dwelling. Then, when these men came out, they were as though newly baptized, with the grace of the Holy Spirit upon their heads, for a fiery tongue was seen resting on the head of each one—a tongue of flame, like fire itself.

Then we saw how they went out and preached in the languages of the people who were there. To understand the meaning of this act, we should bear in mind that, just as Muslims today, for example, go to Mecca in connection with Muhammad and Ramadan,

so the Jews, wherever they lived—all who believed in the one God—would go to Jerusalem, where the one Temple of Solomon stood. And indeed, during this season people would set out from various parts of the earth. They would arrive for Passover and remain throughout all these days until Pentecost, celebrating the whole period, and afterward they would return to their homelands. So on one of the final days, when such a great multitude had gathered there, eighteen languages and dialects were present, as we heard today. In other words, people had come from many different regions: Cretans, people from Mesopotamia and Arabia, and from countless other places. Through the Apostles, the Holy Spirit spoke to each person in his own language and dialect. He condescended even to the level of their particular dialect, so that no one would fail to grasp this truth, and He proclaimed the mighty works of God.

These people, who heard the preaching of Pentecost directly from the Holy Apostles, surely carried it back to their homelands: “This and this happened in Jerusalem this year. This is what we heard; this is what took place.” For this reason, they are regarded as apostles before the Apostles. It was not first the Twelve or the Seventy who carried the truth from Jerusalem into the world. It was these people of Pentecost, who returned to their homelands and recounted the mighty works of God. Later, the Apostles went out and reached their homelands as well; they baptized the people, established the Church among them, and ordained priests and bishops, and so forth. Today, then, we commemorate these simple lay apostles who proclaimed the mighty works of God.

What I especially want us to notice is that the Holy Spirit spoke in each person’s own language, so much so that they were astonished. “How is it that these men are Galileans and know only one language, Hebrew, yet each of us now hears them in our own language?” Some even went so far as to accuse these men of being drunk, because they could not understand the language being spoken by someone else and were ill-disposed toward them. Of course, when a person is drunk, his words become confused and others cannot understand him, so they said, “That must be what is happening.” One man, for example, might have been a Cretan or from Arabia, while another was speaking Arabic, and he could not understand it. But Peter stepped forward.

And he said to them, “Gentlemen, no one is drunk at nine in the morning, at the third hour. What is happening—what you hear and what astonishes you—is something that was foretold.”

Many years before Christ, your own Prophet Joel spoke about what would take place today. So do not be astonished. Through the Prophet Joel, the Holy Spirit said, “I will pour out My Spirit, and young people will speak in tongues,” and so forth. This, then, is what is now being fulfilled. Do not be shocked or scandalized. What is especially significant is that the Holy Spirit condescended to speak even in their distinct dialects.

We are Greeks and say that we speak Greek. Yet if you go to Crete, you may often find it difficult to understand the people because they have their own particular accent. If you go to Arvanitia, you may not be able to understand them because they have their own dialect. If you go to Roumeli or Zakynthos, they have their own dialect, and people may not be able...

The Holy Spirit spoke even in those dialects so that everyone could understand. Most of you are not from here, and you do not know what has been going on here in Athens recently. There are movements here that call themselves Pentecostal. These are heretical movements. They have nothing whatsoever to do with Orthodoxy. Like all heresies, they have come from the West, specifically from America. They claim to speak foreign languages and to be connected with Pentecost. Consequently, they claim that they speak by the power of the Holy Spirit. But if an observant person attends one of their gatherings, he will hear them speaking what they call foreign languages. He himself cannot understand what they are saying, but neither is there anyone in the audience whose language they are supposedly speaking. Consequently, they are not speaking by the power of the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit enabled the Apostles to speak in eighteen languages, but the corresponding peoples were standing before them:

Parthians, Medes, people from Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Libya, Cretans, Greeks, Jews, and so forth. Today we are Greeks. What language, then, would the Holy Spirit speak to us—Chinese, even though we are Greeks? Therefore, they are under demonic influence. Guard yourselves as much as you can. Do not believe them. Gentlemen, if you speak foreign languages, go and find the people whose language it is. We are Greeks. The Holy Spirit does not lie. You are liars, deceived by Satan. Secondly, today we have many supposedly “illumined” women who claim to receive illumination and write things down. And what do they write? Foolishness. Nevertheless, they write. “The Holy Spirit said it,” they claim. “In the last days, this and that will happen.” Peter stood up and told them

that it was written, “In the last days, when this and that will happen”—and that this was being fulfilled that very day. The “last days” of the prophecy are the period from the time the prophet wrote it until the days when it was fulfilled. For us, the last days are the period from Christ until the consummation of the ages. Since Peter himself says that this prophecy was being fulfilled that day, how can it be fulfilled again two thousand years later, when it has already been fulfilled? “This,” he says, “is what was spoken by the Prophet Joel.” It is being fulfilled today. Do not be scandalized. We are not drunk; we are not mad. He foretold that it would happen, and now it is happening. How can we demand that the same thing happen again two thousand years later? Let me give you a small example. Joseph, by the providence of God, was sent

Joseph was sent, by God’s providence, to help Mary, our Most Holy Theotokos, during her pregnancy and so forth. When he saw that she was with child, he thought it was the result of sin. “Suspecting a secret union,” as the hymnographer says. But the angel intervened and said to him, “Joseph, you are mistaken. What is happening now is what the Prophet Isaiah wrote about. Did not the Prophet Isaiah write, Joseph, ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel’? Here it is. This is that prophecy. Be at peace.” Joseph was convinced and took Mary into his care. So the prophecy was fulfilled. What was happening then was the fulfillment of that prophecy. Is it supposed to happen again now? Will there be another such conception? Are we to take this prophecy and apply it again whenever we please? That is spiritual deception. And so today there is more than this one issue at stake.

The most important thing is to pay close attention to this matter, because thousands of people—if not millions—are being led astray by such people and deceivers, by so-called enlightened visionaries of every kind. This is happening abroad as well, not only throughout Greece. Wherever you go, this deception has reached to the ends of the earth. Although the prophecy has been fulfilled and the matter is finished, they take it up again to reinforce their deception. Guard yourselves as carefully as you can. Whenever you hear of so-called enlightened visionaries, of people who claim to speak with the Most Holy Theotokos, or of people who claim to speak with the Saints, be on your guard and leave. Whenever you hear of firewalking rituals and the like, be on your guard and leave. The Holy Spirit does not do such things. The Holy Spirit knew who stood before Him and spoke through the Apostles in each person’s own dialect, so that each listener went away filled, satisfied, and spiritually nourished.

Each one went away strengthened and illumined, and carried the mighty works of God to the ends of the earth. Fear and trembling should fill a person who enters the Church. Fear and trembling should also fill anyone who sins. For as the divine John Chrysostom says, if a person had even a little fear of God, he would either not sin at all or would sin very little. Whenever we begin any service, we say at the beginning, “O Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, Who art everywhere present and fillest all things.” But who truly believes this? Wherever a person may hide—even if he could hide in the most inaccessible place in order to sin—God is there before him; the Holy Spirit is there before him. He is seen by the One Who is everywhere present

and fills all things. “No one will see us anywhere; only the two of us will know.” But the Comforter knows as well, and God knows. “Make sure no one sees you coming here.” But God sees him. What does it matter if you break the lamp outside, put out the light, or go to the ends of the earth, into ravines and deserted places? What does it matter if you whisper? What difference does any of it make? You sin, act, and speak before God. In older iconography, above the iconostasis and directly over the Holy Doors, they would always paint an eye, an ear, and a hand writing. These signify God, Who sees everyone, hears everyone, and records everything. And if only God, only the Comforter, were recording it, that would be one thing.

But our conscience also records it, and so does the devil, who will set out every person’s deeds in complete detail: then, there, with that man, with that woman, and so forth—this is what you did. Everything will be presented in full detail. If a person truly wished to watch over his life, he would have to be attentive to every movement, to the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit. We speak of the Holy Spirit’s presence everywhere when we say, “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” yet we have no awareness of what these words mean. At about this hour, the third hour—around nine in the morning—the descent of the Holy Spirit took place. On this day the Church has appointed a short service and calls the people to bend their knees so that

the priest may read the beautiful prayers composed by Basil the Great, imploring the Father to send the Holy Spirit upon us as well: to remain with us, comfort us, strengthen us, illumine us, and convict us concerning sin, so that we may be saved. That is why, in a little while, you will see the priest come out and kneel here, inviting us also: “Come, let us bend the knee.” All who are physically able will kneel, both old and young—not only here, but wherever the Orthodox faith is found today—so that they may receive this grace of the Holy Spirit. But will they receive it? That is another matter requiring attention. To gain a proper image of this scene, a person should turn his nous, his spiritual intellect, toward the Ark.

The Flood came. For forty days the fountains of the deep were opened and rain poured down from heaven. As Holy Scripture says, the waters rose above the highest mountains on earth, and the Ark was carried upon them. After the Ark had remained on the waters for one hundred and fifty days, Noah saw that the rain from above had stopped. It occurred to him that perhaps the waters had begun to recede and some mountain or peak had appeared. So he decided to release one of the birds he had brought into the Ark in pairs. He opened the window and released a raven, hoping to learn from it what had happened. But the raven did not return

to bring him any news, as we might say, because when it went out, it found dead bodies floating on the surface of the waters. There were animals and people, the prominent and the obscure, even the craftsmen who had built the Ark—all dead. So the raven remained there feeding and did not return. Noah then decided to release a clean bird, and he sent out the dove. The dove, as you know, is a type of the Holy Spirit—an image pointing toward Him. The dove is a clean bird, and Christ always showed respect for it. I remember how, when He entered the Temple and overturned everything, scattering the coins and overturning the tables, He came to those who were selling doves. People bought them for the purification offering, as we also encounter in the forty-day churching rite.

He said to them, “Take these things away and leave.” He did not open the cages and release the birds. He respected the image of the dove because it is a type, an image pointing to the Holy Spirit. And this leads to a further point: if Christ respected the dove, which is an image of the Holy Spirit, how can I fail to venerate the icon of my Lord, of my Most Holy Theotokos, and of my Saints, when heretics tell me to throw them out of my home? In any case, Noah released a dove. The dove went out. Being clean, it will not settle on filth or decay. It flew and flew, but found nowhere to set its feet and rest. So it was compelled to return to the Ark, and the elder Noah reached out his hand and brought it back inside. Therefore, my beloved, when the priest kneels and begins to implore Heaven

to send the Holy Spirit upon us also, the Holy Spirit will come and, like a dove, will begin to hover over each person who is kneeling. But where will He find a clean place on which to rest? To remain, He must find purity. If He finds no clean place, He will return and withdraw. Everyone kneels. A woman kneels with her little child. Good—but what of the other five children she killed and did not bring into the world? The Holy Spirit moves on and finds an elderly woman kneeling. Shall He rest there? Where can He rest? She separated a husband from his wife; she estranged a child from his family; she goes around the neighborhood accusing others from morning until night. Where can He remain? He goes farther and finds one person living in fornication, another in adultery, another blaspheming, another stealing, and so on. Where can He rest?

He flies on and on, and if He finds purity anywhere, He will remain; otherwise, He will return. If believers possessed this fear—that is, this reverence and sober awareness—they would not come to Church today merely wearing fresh clothes, having changed only their outward appearance. They would have gone to Holy Confession, made peace with everyone, and shown love. They would have no lawsuits, hatred, or passions, and they would at least greet one another. Then they would come in order to

receive the peace of God, which is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. These, in brief, are the events surrounding this great feast. I pray that, by the grace of the Lord, we may all be found clean, and that the Holy Spirit may remain upon us, illumine us, guide us throughout the rest of our lives, and count us worthy of the Heavenly Kingdom. Amen. A person receives very great benefit

both in this present life and eternally, if he is willing to pay close attention to what Christ lived and taught.

A person must know his enemies. If he does not know them, he will easily fall into their hands, into their trap and snare. And there are enemies of many kinds. Our true enemies are not those whom we usually call enemies because they harmed our field, our property, or our body. Our enemies are those who harm our soul, because all other material injuries can be healed. Harm to the soul is the matter that may remain unhealed. The soul has its own enemies, and when a person does not know them, he easily falls into their trap before he realizes it, and he is lost. Who are man’s enemies? There are three principal enemies, and they have an order: one is first, another second, and another third. Many think that man’s foremost enemy is Satan. They are mistaken. Christ Himself disproves this. Satan is third in the order of man’s enemies. Man’s first enemy is his own flesh.

The second enemy is the world, and Satan comes third. Unless these enemies are placed in this order and confronted in this order, a person labors, struggles, and hopes in vain that he will accomplish anything. You heard today how Christ, as man upon earth, was tempted: first through the flesh, second through the world, and third by Satan. Satan is third. First is man’s flesh, which you cannot leave behind wherever you go—not even in Church, at meals, or in sleep.

Even in prayer, the flesh is always set against the soul. The flesh does not desire what benefits the soul, and what the flesh desires does not benefit the soul. They are always at war, and woe to the person who yields to the desires of the flesh and to the pride of life, as Paul says. How is the flesh conquered? The first aid in overcoming the temptation of the flesh is fasting. I heard that Christ fasted for forty days and forty nights. Did He need to do so? No. He left us an example, that we should follow in His steps. He left us a path,

a way and a teaching: this is what you must follow if you wish to overcome your foremost enemy, your flesh. Fasting is something given within Paradise itself. Adam received the first commandment: “You shall not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”

“You shall not eat.” As Basil the Great says so beautifully and concisely, fasting was established in the giving of that commandment: “If Eve and Adam had fasted from the tree, we would have had no need of this present fast. Let us therefore fast, that we may return to Paradise.” Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise because of their appetite. Man’s belly is a dwelling place of Satan.

According to the Fathers, it gives strength to Satan, whose seat is “upon the navel of the belly.” The devil has his throne here, and if a person wishes to conquer his flesh, he must observe the appointed fast. This must not be a fast that kills the body, but one that kills the passions. It must be kept with measure, discernment, and self-restraint, so that the person does not fall into the opposite extreme, but frees the soul and enables it to struggle. Otherwise, he will not succeed. A person cannot separate himself from this enemy, his flesh. That is why it is his first and foremost enemy, and it is conquered only through fasting. Christ showed us this when He fasted for forty days and forty nights, although He did not need fasting as we do

because we human beings are subject to the passions. The second enemy is the world. We fear the world and other people far more than we fear God. A person does not fear God; he fears the world. He is often ashamed before the world, and sometimes this fear of the world restrains him from doing harm. Yet he does not fear God. I remember something I once read about Saint Ephraim the Syrian. Saint Ephraim once went down to Alexandria, and people pointed him out, saying that he was a Saint. A prostitute who was there said, “I will prove to you that he is not a Saint.” And she began to pursue him,

She kept pursuing the elder, laying siege to him and flirting with him. The elder understood what she was doing, but he did not respond. All day long she followed him—close behind him, beside him, and in front of him—wagging her tail like a little dog. That evening he smiled at her. She thought to herself, “I have caught him.”

“Let us go somewhere secluded. I see that I have tired you out, since you have been following me since this morning. I have thought it over carefully, and I have decided to satisfy you.” She was delighted, thinking that she now had him in her grasp. “But I cannot do it tonight, because I have urgent work. I want us to meet tomorrow at ten in the morning.”

So they agreed to meet at a certain place nearby.

They arranged to meet the next morning. All night long, the woman was beside herself, telling the others that she had already defeated him and that they would see for themselves in the morning. Indeed, he met her the next morning, and they began walking along a main street in Alexandria. They walked on and on until they reached a park. When they came to a grassy place in the park, Saint Ephraim took off his cassock, spread it on the grass, and invited her to lie down. She said to him, “Shame on you! Here, in front of everyone?” He replied, “So, my child, you fear the world and are ashamed before it. But do you neither fear God nor feel ashamed before Him? And if you do not fear God or feel ashamed before Him,”

“I do fear Him and feel ashamed before Him, my child. See to it, then, that you too learn to feel shame and fear before God.” If a person could discern between God and the world, as Saint Ephraim did, he would prevent many evils. A person sins for the sake of the world. He dresses as the world wants him to dress. He does not fast because the world does not want him to. He does not have children because the world does not want him to. He steals, does all kinds of things, lies, and so forth because the world wants it. He does not attend Church because he fears the world. He does not confess because he fears the world. He does not receive Holy Communion because he fears the world. The world is a great beast. If people had heeded what Christ told us—“Beware of men”—and noticed that He did not say, “Beware of wild beasts,” they would understand what the world truly is.

People cast aside the Wednesday and Friday fast because Mr. So-and-so or Mrs. So-and-so has come to visit. Many remove fasting from their homes during the fast days so that they can serve non-fasting food, lest the world take offense at them. Such is this beast. “Out with You, Christ; out with you, Most Holy Theotokos; out with You, God. The world is here now—Mr. So-and-so, Mrs. So-and-so, and the rest.” The world is a great beast. Why have women become like men and men like women? For the sake of the world. It was not done for Christ, for the Most Holy Theotokos, or for their Saints. It was done for the world. They fear the world, as though this corrupt world were the one that would give them its certificate of approval. Christ defeated the world today. Satan took our Christ up to the pinnacle and said to Him, “Throw Yourself down; they will catch You,” so that the people would applaud Him and ask no questions. Christ did not do it, just as He did not obey the first temptation, when Satan told Him to turn the stones into bread

so that He might satisfy His hunger. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Is man concerned only with food? Man is also spirit, and a human being without spirit is no longer truly a human being; he is a corpse, a remnant, mere dust. It is the spirit that gives the human person his true worth. Therefore, if I allow the flesh to destroy my spirit, I am not even a human being—certainly not a rational one. In that condition, I am nothing. So there are two great beasts: the human flesh and the world. Guard yourselves against the world. Choose your friends carefully. Look through the little peephole in your door to see who is about to enter and who is knocking, and decide whether you should open it or not. Think about this seriously. The world is a great beast that influences a person, and a person is not strong enough to assimilate the world.

Instead, he is assimilated by the world. Either he will influence the world, or the world will influence him. Therefore, always be discerning in your dealings with the world. Always set God before you on one side and the world on the other. The world passes away, together with all its pleasure, while God remains. The world will not be able to help us. At most, it may send a wreath to our grave. Many people are forbidden by their doctors to attend because they must avoid emotional strain, so they do not even come to the burial. The world, then, is a great beast. The first enemy is the human flesh, the second is the world, and the third is Satan. Satan comes last. We do many things without the devil even knowing about them—things Satan himself could not imagine, despite his satanic cunning and quick-wittedness.

Yet Satan is not responsible for many of these things. We outstrip even Satan in wickedness, so that Satan learns from us and borrows our examples. The third temptation of the Lord came after Satan had failed to defeat Him in the first and the second, and after our Christ had answered him from Holy Scripture on both occasions. He then proposed another way, simple and seemingly painless. It was as though he said, “Yes, You came into the world to die and to take back the things that I possess. Behold, then, ‘All these things I will give You, if You will fall down and worship me.’” “Make one metanoia—a single prostration—before me,” he said, “and I will give You all these things.” What things? Everything that exists.

There is no limit to Satan’s egotism, though perhaps he was even speaking the truth, for he held everything in his grasp. “What You came to set free and give back to mankind, I will give to You if You make one metanoia—a single prostration—before me.” Does it not seem easy to make one prostration and gain the whole world? It seems easy. But Christ did not do it. He did not make that prostration, because whoever makes such a metanoia becomes the servant of the one before whom he has bowed. Everything he possesses belongs to that master. It is no longer his own, because he has become a slave. This is a snare that the human person fails to understand. Someone says, “What harm will come to me if I go just once? I will go and keep someone company, and so forth. But I will gain an apartment, a car, this and that; I will be given fine clothes and all kinds of comforts.”

“What harm have I suffered? So I fell this once—it is nothing.” Nothing? How is it nothing that you fell into the sin of fornication, adultery, or deceit? What do you mean, “It is nothing”? You have become enslaved to Satan and carried out his plan. Satan has you in his grasp through that sin, even though you imagine that you remain free simply because no one discovered or heard about it, because you were not brought before the public prosecutor, and because the world never learned of it. Yet Satan still holds you. This is a great lesson, and this passage contains many teachings. Read the chapter calmly and carefully. It is the fourth chapter of Matthew and the fourth chapter of Luke. These two Evangelists speak about the temptations of the Lord. The Lord was tempted not for His own sake, but especially for ours

to show us that victory is possible. Do not make excuses, argue, or cast the blame upon others: “He put me up to it. He told me to do it. He led me astray. He forced me.” Lies—with a capital L. Yes, he suggested it, but he did not force you. Sin takes place just as the first sin took place. Satan made the suggestion; Eve liked it; she picked the fruit, ate it, gave it to another, died, and was driven out. Satan only spoke and suggested. Satan does the same with us. He makes suggestions, we like what he suggests, and then we act upon them. He gives the command, and we carry it out. He is the dancing master, and we dance. If we choose, we need not dance. That is why tomorrow we shall hear: “Depart with the devil and his angels.” He told you what to do, and you obeyed. Therefore, go with him into the continuation of his existence. Of course, it is hard and difficult for a person to live this life. Yet Christ comes as our Advocate and helps the one who struggles. It is a cross, a temptation, an execution, a kind of self-disembowelment. Every day the wickedness of the world, the temptations of life, and so many other things tear your heart apart. Yet Christ helps all such people. Just as He was helped in this world by Simon of Cyrene and carried His Cross to Golgotha, where His glory shone forth,

so Christ is also there for every person as a Simon of Cyrene, enabling him to endure. But the person must be willing—that is the point. We Orthodox Christians are surrounded by so many Saints, Martyrs, and holy ascetics. Were they not human beings? Did they not bear flesh? Did they not have families and temptations? Of course they did. Who has ever come into this world without being tempted? No one. It is impossible to pass through this life without temptation. How did they conquer? How did they remain afloat? And if they fell, how did they rise again? Through Christ. They turned to Christ. He is the One who gives a person the strength to overcome all the temptations of this world and emerge victorious. I am speaking here beside Saint George of Ioannina. I am beside his holy relics

inside the church that bears his name. Look at him there, a young man wearing a fustanella. Picture him a hundred or a hundred and fifty years ago, and speak with him. What was he? An angel from Heaven? Was he born a Saint from his mother’s womb? Was he not born in the flesh? Was he not born with ambitions? Did he not have a mother and father, a family and a society around him? Did he not have friends and young women among his acquaintances? How did he refuse to yield, persevere even to martyrdom, and receive the seal of Christ? Now all of us, from the king to the lowliest person, come to light candles before him, venerate him, and ask for his intercessions. Why? Because he received the seal of Christ, which endures for eternity. How did he do it? If even one human being attained salvation—not even sanctity, but merely salvation—that person would be enough to stand as a witness for the prosecution against all of us

who make no effort at all. We do not want to learn anything concerning the soul, and we insist that these things are impossible and too hard. I did not say they were not hard. I did not say there were no thorns. But they can be accomplished. Our Christ did not preach an impossible teaching, nor did Christ merely preach and leave the doing to us. He first did these things Himself and then preached them. He is not like the founders of human religions, who preach but do not act. He is the One who acted first and then preached. That is why He pronounced this blessing: “Whoever does and teaches them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” These things are essential. Therefore, let each of us, in his own way, seek to have a conversation with his Saint,

a conversation with the Theotokos, and a conversation with the Lord, and ask for guidance: where does he stand regarding the salvation of his soul? A person does not possess the proper measure. He has no measuring tape or scales with which to weigh himself and see whether he is fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. A husband measures his wife and declares her pure gold. A wife measures her husband and declares him precious gold. A mother judges her children, and the children judge their dear mother—because she gives them sweets, feeds them, and cares for them—and so they send one another straight to Paradise. But have you asked Christ what He thinks? Have you asked the Saint whose name you bear what he or she thinks? I send you to Paradise, and you send me there. But are they sending you there? That is the question. We do not possess the measure, so we must ask for it. Our Christ shows us forbearance.

The Theotokos holds back Heaven, as do the Saints: they present their blood and their martyrdom, and they bend the justice of God, restraining the sword He has taken in His hand. Yet the human person does not make good use of this longsuffering. My beloved, when Christ came into the world, this iconostasis—this veil—was closed. The high priest entered once a year to offer a prescribed sacrifice within. But what we now call the Beautiful Gate did not exist then; the way was closed. Today, however, it has been opened. Christ was crucified and, as I have told you many times, He opened a door so wide that even the greatest sinners can enter. Let us not try to enter by some other way. We must enter by the way Christ has shown us,

through His inn here and through His innkeepers, the priests, who labor for the salvation of the human person. If someone tries to come by another way of his own—through his good deeds and his own goodness, rather than through metanoia (repentance), confession, and Holy Communion—it is impossible. You see the archangels standing on either side with swords. Do you know what they are saying? “Not this way; through the middle.”

“This way—through the middle.” That is the way we shall go. This is what the archangels are doing: preventing people from trying to enter through some other door instead of the central one. This central door is always the great gate. Beside it stands the Mother of Life, interceding, while Christ saves. Joy belongs to those who are united and reconciled with Christ in this world, leaving their sins in confession and receiving their entry pass—the Body and Blood of Christ—for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life, here at this Beautiful Gate. Therefore, through the intercessions of the Saints commemorated today, and especially through the intercessions of Saint George the New, after whom this holy church is named and whose holy relics are treasured here, I pray that they may help us, and that we too may desire to go where they have gone. This is my prayer for one another and for all. Amen.

να στείλει και σε εμάς το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, το Πνεύμα το Άγιο θα έρθει και, σαν περιστερά, επάνω στον καθέναν ο οποίος είναι γονατισμένος θα αρχίσει να πετά. Πού θα βρει όμως καθαρό για να καθίσει; Διότι για να καθίσει πρέπει να βρει καθαρό. Δεν βρει καθαρό, θα επιστρέψει και θα ξαναπάει μέσα. Γονατίζουν οι πάντες, γονατίζει η κυρία με το παιδάκι της. Καλό. Τα άλλα τα πέντε, τα σκοτωμένα που έχει όμως, που δεν τα έφερε; Προχωρεί το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, πάει πιο κάτω, βρίσκει τη γιαγιά γονατισμένη. Να καθίσω; Πού να καθίσω; Αυτή χώρισε τον άντρα της, αυτή χώρισε το παιδί της, αυτή βγαίνει στη γειτονιά και κατηγορεί από το πρωί μέχρι το βράδυ. Πού να σταθεί; Πάει πιο κάτω, πηγαίνει, τον βρίσκει πόρνο τον άλλον, τον βρίσκει μοιχό τον άλλον, τον βρίσκει βλάσφημο τον άλλον, τον βρίσκει κλέπτη τον άλλον, τον βρίσκει, τον βρίσκει. Πού να καθίσει;
