Summary
As Great Lent approaches Holy Week, Christ prepares the Twelve for His arrest, condemnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection so that they will not lose faith. His Resurrection on the third day—Sunday after His Friday death—fulfills the Scriptures and confirms that salvation and entry into the Kingdom come through Him alone. Christ’s patience toward sinners is itself a profound miracle, calling every person to receive Him sincerely as Savior and live according to the Gospel.

In keeping with the purpose of these talks we give here, this evening we should speak about the events of the Fifth Sunday of the Fast. So, after the Fifth Sunday, Palm Sunday remains, and then we enter what is called Holy Week.
As we heard the day before yesterday, our Christ is preparing His disciples for what they are about to witness, so that they will not stumble in their faith.
It is not easy for a person to accept
that his teacher will be slaughtered and crucified. It is an exceedingly heavy thing. These men regarded Him as a great man; some, of course, also regarded Him as God, but they still could not make this entirely clear within themselves. So it was only natural that they would stumble when they saw Him being crucified. I do not know whether you remember, but our Christ made another such effort to help them so that they would not stumble. If you recall, He granted them the Transfiguration. At the Transfiguration, He revealed to them something of His divinity.
They were able to see it, of course. It was as though He opened a veil and said, “I am also God; I am not merely man.” And our Church puts it beautifully: “So that, when they see You crucified, they may understand that Your Passion is voluntary, and may proclaim to the world that You are truly the radiance of the Father.”
They had seen Him work miracles, open tombs and restore the departed as though they were alive, cast out demons, walk upon the sea, rebuke unclean spirits, and say to the sea, “Peace, be still.” And afterward they were to see a few men arrest Him and raise Him upon the Cross.
They would lose all confidence. So, to keep them from being taken completely by surprise, as we say, He prepares them for it. Sometimes, when we know that we are about to face a serious situation, even we take courage. If someone tells us, “Be prepared: we cannot offer any assurance concerning your loved one’s illness. We will do our best,” what do we immediately do? We brace ourselves for something unpleasant, and because we have been prepared in some measure, we face it differently than if it were to strike us suddenly. This is precisely what Christ is doing now: He is seeking to prepare them gradually,
to make them ready to accept what is going to happen and to understand that it had to happen in this way, whether they comprehend it or not. That is why the Evangelist tells us here what Jesus said to the disciples: “They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem.” You know, Jerusalem stands upon a hill. It is at an elevation of 830 meters. When we go there in the summer, we sleep under a quilt. So they were going up to Jerusalem.
“They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them.” In a sense, He went ahead joyfully. He was not gloomy or preoccupied, although He knew what was going to happen to Him. He walked as though He were going to a festival, even though He knew what awaited Him. At any rate, they were amazed, and as they followed Him, they were also afraid. They wondered, “Where does this joy come from? Why is He acting this way? Why is He in such high spirits? This will end badly for us.” That was how they imagined it. So they marveled, but they were also afraid. At any rate, He took aside
the Twelve. Apparently, He separated them from the others who were also there, and “He began to tell them the things that were going to happen to Him.” Not what would happen to you, but what would happen to Me. He said, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem.” You see, from here we are going to Jerusalem. “And the Son of Man”—that is He. He is not called a son of men, because Christ was not begotten from the seed of man; He is not born of a man and a woman, but of a woman alone. The rest is from the Holy Spirit. That is why He is called the Son of Man. We are called sons of men. I am the son of Athanasios and Asimina; you are the children of John and Eleni, or of Georgidis. According to His humanity, He has a mother but no father.
According to His divinity, He has a Father but no mother. That is why He is called fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. In the Old Testament there was a person who served as His type. He too appeared in this way, as fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. This was Melchizedek, whom Paul mentions in his Epistle to the Hebrews. He tells his fellow countrymen, the Hebrews, that the One he is presenting to them has come according to the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek appears suddenly in Holy Scripture, without any mention of who begot him. He simply appears as a person in the days of Abraham. Nor does Scripture say that he later died, although it tells us of everyone else when they came, from whom they descended, and when they died. Of him, it says nothing. In the same way, Christ
appears as fatherless according to His humanity, because He was not begotten from the seed of man. According to His divinity, He is motherless, because He has a Father but no mother. “And who shall declare His generation?” He is eternal, so who can say where He came from or where He went? That is why, as I said, He is precisely according to the order of Melchizedek. This is also why He is called the Son of Man. So He does not say, “I,” but, “The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes.” He says that they will hand Him over to the chief priests and scribes. “And they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles.” These were the Romans, the occupying power; they were Gentiles, not Hebrews. He would be handed over to them and then, as we are told, He would die upon a cross.
Very well, if He knows this and prophesies that this and that will happen, why did He go? Why did He not avoid it? This is what people do not know and fail to appreciate about our Christ. Our Christ was not crucified merely because the Hebrews wanted it. He was crucified because He Himself also willed to be crucified for mankind. They acted wickedly and without concern, but in doing so they merely served the plan of God. He could have departed, as He had escaped many times before, but this time He did not. That is why we say, “As the Lord comes to His voluntary Passion”—a Passion accepted freely and willingly. I have a personal experience concerning what I am telling you.
An uncle of mine, who has since died, was a great atheist. He used to say to me, “Why did He not come down from the Cross? Tell me, why did He not escape if He was God? The Hebrews caught the poor fellow and crucified Him,” he would say. “Who prevented Him from escaping?” So I replied, “How did He escape on that earlier occasion, when they tried to throw Him down from the cliff and He passed through their midst? How did He escape then?” “Where does it say that?” he asked. I opened the Gospel and showed him. Many people hold this opinion: Christ could do nothing else; the Hebrews cornered Him and crucified Him. But that is not how it was. Out of love for mankind, Christ was crucified and died. We must fix this firmly in our minds,
so that we may know how deeply indebted we are to Him. If people studied carefully, they would see that when Christ died upon the Cross, He died at the moment He Himself willed, and He died voluntarily. Scripture says that they broke the legs of the others. They went and shattered their legs so that they would die sooner and could be buried before sunset, when their Passover began on Friday evening. But when they came to Jesus, it says, they found Him already dead. Nicodemus and the other man, Joseph, went and asked Pilate to give them the body. At first he would not do so. “But He cannot be dead,” he said. “It is impossible.” They told him that He had died. Not enough time had passed for Him to die. So Pilate summoned the centurion, the commanding officer, and asked him, “Centurion, is He dead?” When he heard that He had indeed died, he gave them permission: “Take Him and bury Him.” Yet the Roman soldier who was on guard, although Christ was already dead, thrust a spear here into His right side, and “blood and water came out.” This is a sign of death, when the serum separates from the blood.
In medical science, that is evidence that He had died. Indeed, this was first discovered by Simpson, the inventor of chloroform: when a person’s serum separates from the blood, the person is already dead. Christ died sooner than the other two. This is something a person ought to know as he approaches Pascha, and perhaps next Thursday, God willing, we shall speak about it. But I mention it in passing because of the phrase I used: “voluntary Passion,” a Passion freely willed. He willed to come; He willed to sacrifice Himself out of love for mankind—and people blaspheme Him. At that moment, as the Evangelist John tells us, Christ “bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
First He said, “It is finished.” How do You die, Lord? In the opposite way from the way you human beings die. How do we human beings die? The spirit departs, everything shuts down, and then the head bows. But He says, “I bowed My head and gave up My spirit.” What does this mean? It means that He died at the moment He willed. Why did He die earlier than would naturally be expected? Why did He die so soon? Because if He had allowed Himself to die slowly, He would not have died before sunset. Then they would have had to shatter His legs, as they did those of the others, so that He would die and they could bury Him, clear the place, and go and eat their Passover. But then
how would He have been clearly identified? For the sacred texts go on to tell us that this happened because Holy Scripture had said, “Not one of His bones shall be broken,” and, “They shall look upon Him whom they pierced.” In the Old Testament there was a lamb eaten at the Passover of the Hebrews, and the command was that none of the lamb’s bones should be broken. They were to eat the flesh and leave the skeleton intact, because about sixteen hundred years later the bones of that Lamb—Christ, whom it prefigured—would likewise not be broken, but He would remain whole. Thus He willingly ascended the Cross and willingly died for mankind, at the hour He chose, having prefigured everything in the Old Testament.
He then fulfilled those things so that He could be clearly identified and people could recognize Him. I do not know how you understand these matters within yourselves, but apart from Jesus there is no salvation. He holds the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and it is Christ who makes possible mankind’s return to Paradise. From this, then, together with what I have told you, we understand what He is saying: “Take courage. We are going, and the Son of Man will face this and that.” How much you will endure, how firmly you will stand, and how much you will understand is not the point. What matters is that you know the things I am telling you, and that you know I was aware of where I was going.
I am going willingly, out of love for mankind, and especially out of love for you who are My companions. That is what He shows us here. People do not understand the words our Church chants: “As the Lord comes to His voluntary Passion.” They do not understand them. They believe that Christ was crucified only because the Hebrews were wicked. That was not the only reason. There was also Christ’s love. Christ restrained Himself and His omnipotence as God until everything had been accomplished, until all the prophecies and types had been fulfilled in Him, so that He would be clearly identified as the very One in whom the prophecies found their fulfillment. That is why He deserves not merely one expression of thanks, but endless thanks and gratitude—gratitude which, sadly, is absent.
“The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him”—they will sentence Him—“and they will mock Him, scourge Him, spit upon Him, and kill Him; and on the third day He will rise again.” On the third day, not after three days, as some people count it: from Friday to Sunday, which makes three days. Some say this is false. But He says, “On the third day He will rise again,” and elsewhere, “On the third day I rise.” The first day is Friday, the second is Saturday, and the third is Sunday. The Jews counted from sunset to sunset, from six o’clock to six o’clock, as we would say.
During the night they had watches, shifts of guards. When did He die? What was the first day of His death? Friday afternoon. At six o’clock, the day changed from Friday. Until six o’clock on Saturday afternoon was the second day. And on what day did Christ return? On the third day, as Sunday was dawning. When the Myrrh-bearing Women came very early in the morning, they found that He had risen. “On the third day,” He says, “He will rise again.” For the Scriptures had written that He would rise. And what does our Creed say? Does it not say, “And He rose again according to the Scriptures”? This is why Christ said of the Scriptures, “These are they which testify of Me.” The Scriptures, He says, write about Me.
Who reads Holy Scripture? What is there that people today do not read, what do they not devour with their eyes—except Holy Scripture? Satan prevents a person from even taking it into his hands; and if he does take it up, its content seems so meaningless to him, so outdated, although it is everything. For even if a person learns everything else but does not learn this, it would have been better for him not to have been born. There was no reason for him to come into the world merely to lay a few bricks one upon another and regard it as an achievement. Is that the purpose of man? Man comes to earth in order to die, and he dies in order to live. Man comes to earth and...
he remains here as a tenant, not as a permanent resident—as a tenant. Whenever his Master wills, He serves him notice: “Out!” These things must become a matter of faith for a person. Once he believes them, absorbs them, and understands them, he will immediately change his whole way of life. That will benefit him both in this world and in the world to which he is going, which he cannot avoid. As you can see, death is something no one can escape. Even God, who became man, died; and even the Mother who gave birth to God died. It is a debt we owe, and we will most certainly pay it, whether we wish to or not, whether by necessity or willingly. Here, then, Christ tells them what is going to happen. And has He not also told us what is going to happen? Has He not told us? We can see only as far as death, only as far as the grave. But what happens beyond the marble slab?
Can anyone see it? He has told us. He has told us what awaits us and where we must place the greater weight of our concern: on the soul or on the body. And He says it must be placed on the soul, because the body depends upon the soul. The body is merely the carriage; the driver is the soul. It is merely the vehicle; the rider, the one responsible, is the soul. Without the soul, the body cannot remain alive. The soul can exist by itself, but the body cannot. Yet man—I do not know what to say—it is as though someone has cast the evil eye upon him: he insists on giving all his attention to the body. So much effort is spent on the body. He cares for it, feeds it, keeps it warm, washes it, treats its illnesses, and travels abroad, here and there, for the sake of the body, trying to prolong...
its temporary life. Yet he does nothing—or almost nothing—for the spirit, for the soul. In one of his homilies, Basil the Great says, “The soul and the body are partners, two partners working together.” Why, then, O man, are you unjust? Why do you not take care to distribute your labor and concern fairly? Care for the body in such a way that you care for the soul at the same time. Even if you are unwilling to give the greater share to the better partner—the soul—will you not at least give it what it deserves?
Ninety-five percent? At least give them equal shares, he says; divide your care evenly between them. But people do not. They care greatly for the body, as though the spirit played no part at all in human existence. And so, when one day—whether we wish it or not—this partnership is dissolved, either violently or naturally, we will see that we judged things wrongly, but then it will be too late. You will have noticed that we even care for our children as though they were ornaments, little objects on display, rather than immortal beings. We do not invest in their souls or watch over them. We put a thermometer under the child’s arm to see whether he has even a slight fever. We keep scales to measure every gram he gains. But if he tells his father to go to the devil, makes obscene gestures, obeys no one, smashes things, and causes havoc, we say, “I will put a stop to that when he grows older.”
When he grows older, he will put a stop to you and me. That is what he will do, because we fail to see an immortal soul in him. What mother has her child fast during these days? What mother has her child fast? She takes such care of his body—and rightly so; I have no objection. But where will his immortal soul go? If the doctor says, “Keep him on rice water for ten days,” you will do it. You will. Christ tells you to fast him, yet you do not. How can this be? Of course, I am not speaking about a sickly or weak child. But do you attend to the other aspect? People do not. They cannot appreciate what the child truly is. He is not an ornament. He is a person, with a soul within him. From his earliest years he is formed and learns. Some parents do this; yet if we see anyone doing it, we who stand outside and consider ourselves clever regard him as mad, even though we have not truly understood the matter.
Unless a person learns from childhood and believes in the existence and almighty power of God, he cannot advance. Have you ever read Daniel? See what happened when Nebuchadnezzar ordered the youths to eat from the royal table, but they refused. They asked the official in charge to give them legumes instead. He replied, “I cannot give you that, because tomorrow the king will see you looking weak and pale. He will think that I am stealing your rations, and he will have my head.” “Test us for ten days,” they told him. So he gave them legumes and water. They neither drank the wine from the royal table nor ate its food. After ten days, when the king happened to come and see them, these three young men were more handsome, stronger, and ten times wiser than the other pampered youths. That is how it is. I will give you an example from my own life, though I do not wish to make a display of it.
After seventeen years of childlessness, Saint Nektarios of Aegina gave us this gift. He is now fourteen years old and in his second year of middle school. He fasts throughout Great Lent without oil, except on Saturdays and Sundays. He had been ill since the previous Saturday, and on Monday his fever broke. No milk, nothing of that sort. Yet during the fast he gains two, three, even four kilograms. This is verified now; it is not some tale from long ago. But no one has tried it to discover what God means and what the power of God means. People see everything only in natural terms. But Christianity is not natural; it is supernatural. It is not irrational; it is beyond reason. Yet they have never tried. “Taste and see.” Come and try, and you will see how things change.
We do that.
Christ has told each person what awaits him. Just as He said what awaited Him when He became man, so He has also told us what awaits every human being. And if a person pays no heed to what He has said concerning each one of us... For He says that one day He will bring us to judgment even for idle words—not only for shameful deeds and the like, but even for idle words. Your mouth was not given to you so that you might empty it out, speaking words into the air. Your mouth was given to praise God; your soul was given to praise God. “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.” “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” You have no time for useless things. Who takes these things into account? Who gives them any thought? Who pays attention to them? “Panagopoulos is mad...
the Gospel is madness; everything is madness.” Truly, that is how people see it. The world is applauded instead. But we shall discuss all this at the crossroads, because will we not all have to pass through that crossroads? No one has the option of escaping it. Just as Christ told all of them, so He has told us. He is going up to Jerusalem for this purpose, is He not? And today, as Orthodox Christians, are we also going up to Jerusalem, or are we not? We are. Why are we going up? To follow Him, is that not so? But how are we going up? That is the question. The question is how each of us goes up to Jerusalem. Are we going up prepared to behold the Passion of Christ, or are we going up to crucify Christ again? That is the question. Most of us...
who are called Orthodox Christians go up to crucify Him again. This strange thing that takes place during the days of Christ’s Passion, and throughout this whole matter, is incomprehensible. Christ is the victim; we are the perpetrators. We crucified Him. We drove in the nails, and we drive them in again. Yet we have the audacity to conduct the funeral of our own victim. On Great Friday, in other words, we will bury our victim. Usually, however, when a victim is buried, the perpetrator is either a fugitive or has been caught and imprisoned. Yet we have the audacity, burdened with all our sins...
without metanoia, without confession, and without acknowledging what we have done, to go to the Epitaphios, carry it in procession, mock Him, and afterward stand at the church door and pass beneath it. Why? What does this mean? Do you know what it means? It means: “I make a prostration before You. I will place You above my own head. Tell me what You ask of me. I want to be beneath You.” That is what the act expresses. It is not done so that you may have a son, or so that someone else’s headache may go away, or to serve our own superstitions. It is metanoia. “I make a prostration before You; I obey You; I acknowledge You.” Yet it becomes a mockery. People today, my dear friends, ask for miracles. “Unless I see one,” someone says, “I will not believe.” But do you not see the greatest miracle—that Christ puts up with you? Is there any greater miracle than this?
The patient forbearance of Christ! We do all these crooked and inconsistent things, and still He bears with us. Do you want a greater miracle? This is the greatest miracle. That He raised someone in Capernaum, or someone elsewhere, is nothing beside this: we mock Him in this way, yet He still bears with us and waits for us. This is His patient forbearance. And the words sung concerning Judas on Great Thursday, “Glory to Your longsuffering, O Lord,” should be said for every Judas among us—for each one of us. For now, in the full light of the twentieth century, when we have landed on the moon and imagine that we have learned so much, we knowingly refuse to accept the Gospel and reject it. Why, then, should He bear with us? Does He need our votes? Why? What do you imagine Christ to be? Do you think He needs us?
He does not need us; we need Him. This is how a person ought to think about it. So consider how you are going up to Jerusalem, how you are going to behold the Holy Passion of Christ. Are you going up burdened with sins, carrying axes and saws to fashion a cross for Him and nail Him to it again? This is what a person does when he refuses to acknowledge Christ’s sacrifice and does not receive Him as Savior and Redeemer. We do not go up merely to receive our holiday bonus or enjoy time off, so that we can gather with good company, eat goat and lamb, crack red eggs, dance, and exchange festive greetings. Christ is not about the pleasures of this world; He came for the sins of the world. A person must understand this, accept it, and humble himself. Of course, Christ has given everything for man’s sake, but each thing has its proper time.
Everything has its proper way. Man is not merely a natural being; he is supernatural. A Christian in particular must exercise discernment in every circumstance. What could be more natural than hunger? Hunger is not unnatural. And what could be more natural than eating when I am hungry? The logic is simple: I am hungry, so I should eat. Agreed. But if he stops there, man remains an animal: an animal also grows hungry and eats. Man, however, is something more. I am hungry and should eat—but what shall I eat? That is where man differs: in what he chooses to eat. Today is Wednesday; what shall I eat? It is now Great Lent; what shall I eat? Eat, certainly—but what shall you eat? You have five non-fasting foods to choose from...
and a million fasting foods. Why do you stumble here? This is where you fall short. God gave you a wife, yes. Why? So that you might have children. Very well. But do you? No. Do you approach your wife whenever you please, whether the time is proper or not, as animals do? No, you must not. Where, then, is your higher calling? Where is your spirituality? Where is the proof that you are something more? We are at fault; we have not paid as much attention to these things as we should. God has ordered everything rightly and beautifully. Nothing is out of place; nothing is distorted. We simply have not wished to bend down and examine these things carefully. They are for our benefit, however harsh they may seem. “You know, this can be done, but it will cost a great deal.”
“Doctor, let my loved one recover, whatever the cost.” Why, then, do you not say here, “Let my soul not be lost, and I will sacrifice everything”? As for the body, whether it wishes to or not, tomorrow it will pay its debt: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” You are made up of eggplants, okra, water, phosphorus, calcium, and iron. You received all these things from the earth, and you will repay those debts. But what will happen to the soul, which you received from God and which will return to Him who gave it? You will repay the body’s debts whether you wish to or not. But what of the soul? The days and seasons that the Church sets before us each year are beautifully ordered. If a person were willing to face what they seek to teach and the spiritual benefit they offer him...
he would have been saved many times over—not just once, but many times. Yet we remain at the level of outward formality. Habit, like a steamroller, flattens everything, and we remain just as we are. So we go up to Jerusalem unprepared. Christ said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him take up his cross and follow Me.” Where is that cross? People have not yet begun to fast—not from the cooking pot, not in the flesh, not with the tongue, not with the eyes. They have fasted from nothing during these days. They entered the fast living as before, and they will come out the other side the same way. Where are you heading, brother? Where are you going? Where is your own crucifixion? Where will you crucify your flesh, your desires, your hands, and your eyes, so that you may care for your immortal soul? When do onions begin to sprout, my dear friends?
When they wither on the outside. If they do not wither outwardly, do onions sprout? No. And what about you, this “onion” that is the human person, whom you feed and keep warm? When this onion is cut down, you yourself will weep, and so will those around you. Have you never read what Paul said: “Though the outward man is wasting away, the inward man is being renewed”? Why do neither you nor I pay attention to this? So we are not going up to Jerusalem with Christ. “You go and be crucified, and send us the holiday bonus. We are waiting for it, because the payment is coming due and we have made promises. We bought a television on installments, and that payment depends on the bonus. And send us the lamb, the eggs, and the Easter breads too; we will arrange everything else ourselves.” How long will God remain so generous? God is indeed generous and openhanded.
O man, drink your fill of whatever you want. He even gave quail in the wilderness to those stiff-necked Hebrews. And what does He give us? Go into the marketplace and see. What has this God provided for us? Walk into a meat market, a fish market, a produce market, or a bakery. What has this God provided for us? Yet we are obliged to exercise discernment in everything. “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial.” That is what the Apostle said. So we are not going up as we ought. He went up so that we might ascend free from sin. There are people who have remained unrepentant for years; people who confessed five or six things and left the rest unsaid; people who concealed some of their sins and said, “My spiritual father did not ask me.”
They did not confess them. Your doctor does not ask you about everything either, yet you tell him every detail: “You know, doctor, it hurts here too. And there too. Doctor, I feel this and that,” and so on. He did not ask you, but you still tell him. Why do you speak of the one and not of the other? Do you count your immortal soul as nothing, or do you think you have no soul? If you have no soul, then kill yourself—that is where such reasoning leads. Why go on living? You merely add sins, burning passions, and appetites, and so condemn yourself. Yet you do not kill yourself, because you understand that there is something within you; something speaks to you, something exists. What is this “something” that exists? That is precisely what a person must attend to. I do not know, then, how you yourselves will respond. Christ says, “I shall go and be crucified out of love for mankind; I shall go voluntarily.” If I now crucify myself—my flesh, my will, my eyes, and my appetite—and if I do so for Christ’s sake, Christ, I repeat, has no need of it. I will do it for my own
benefit; I will be doing it for myself. What a difference! He did it out of love for others. I do it out of love for Christ, yet I also do it for my own benefit. And still we do not even value ourselves, because people do not understand that they also have a soul. You see people outside their homes on Sunday morning, hoses in hand, washing their cars. When will you take up a hose, so to speak, and wash yourself—your soul? Who will wash it? They care for horses, dogs, and gardens; they prune the gardens. And they do well—I am not saying they should leave everything filthy and neglected. But when will you labor for your immortal soul? When will you cleanse it? An American once came to a village and acquired a chestnut horse.
He spent two hours every day grooming and currying it—two hours a day. He never went to Church. One day the priest passed by and said, “Mr. George, what are you doing?” “I am looking after Doris,” he replied—that was the chestnut horse’s name. “About how many hours a day does this take you?” the priest asked. “Around two hours,” he said, “and sometimes three.” “Every day?” “Of course, Father, every day.” “And how many hours a day do you give to your soul?” “Now the priest is going on about the soul...” “Poor man, is your soul worth less than Doris? Then take the horse’s feedbag—the nosebag, as they call it in the army—and put it on yourself, so you can save an hour.” How have you still failed to recognize your immortal soul—to understand that you are a person, and that your personhood is not your fingers but your soul? What more can I tell you?
In any case, Christ leaves every person free to decide, even to the point of saying, “I shall take up my own cross,” without anyone forcing him. I am not telling you to love Me; love yourself. It is to your benefit to follow Me. If you do not wish to, live as you please. Of course, what I am telling you is difficult, but it is not impossible. People choose difficult and unusual fields of study, knowing that they will labor at their desks, wear out many pairs of trousers sitting there, and put many drops into their strained eyes, because tomorrow they hope to distinguish themselves and reach the top. And they do it without knowing whether they will finish their studies, or whether, after receiving their degree—or several degrees—tonight, they will even be alive tomorrow, especially with death entering the world today in so many forms and from so many directions.
People are scraped from electricity poles, killed in airplane crashes, or struck down by lightning or electric current. How many new ways have now been added for a person to leave this world more quickly! And still you praise the student and say, “Well done! Well done! He ruined his eyesight, but...” Now suppose someone reflects that there is something beyond the grave. What should that person do? How should he think? If a person never considers these things, he does not truly care either for himself or for another. “I will sacrifice myself,” he says, “so that my children may have a good life.” You will provide for your children, and you do well to educate them. But perhaps you are deforming them instead of forming them. That is the question. The child is like a vehicle, and education equips that vehicle, but Christ is its braking system. However expensive the vehicle may be, without brakes it will not survive; it will destroy its passenger
and kill everyone it meets on the road. What, then, is the human person? But where is this wisdom today? People are making preparations. They have ordered lambs, yogurt, eggs—everything, everything. Great quantities of meat. But about the soul, not a word. I often speak with various drivers who take me home and elsewhere. Some are from the Peloponnese, others from Euboea, and so forth. As we talk, there is nothing at all about the soul. They speak about how they will travel; they are waiting for Pascha so they can go home and roast the young goats. Their custom is to roast the lambs together, and so on. But about Christ, not a single word—not even about “Christ is risen.” They stand outside the Church only to receive the light, then hurry home for the Easter soup. People have lost their way, as I have come to understand. In any case, the Gospel now relates another incident. Even those who were close to Him had not
yet grasped the matter; they had not yet been freed from their weaknesses. Christ was speaking of death, the Cross, burial, and the Resurrection—things that should make one bow one’s head and begin to weep. Yet “James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.’” They even set a trap for Him: “Will You promise that, when we tell You, You will do it for us?” Without first hearing what you want? That is neither right nor honorable. How can I promise? Let me hear what you want, and then I will answer you. But they tried to secure His promise beforehand. “Is there any chance?” No, that is not what I said. Listen: “Grant us that one of us may sit at Your right hand”
“and the other at Your left in Your glory.” They imagined that He was about to establish an earthly kingdom in Jerusalem, overthrow the Romans, and drive out the occupying forces stationed there. So they were saying, “Will You promise that we, Your closest friends, will stand one at Your right and the other at Your left? We will be Your chief attendants.” He speaks of the Cross, while they see a throne and a kingdom. The same thing happens with us. “But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you are asking.’” You do not know what you are asking, He tells them. You have completely missed the point, as we would say. And He brings them back to reality.
“Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the Baptism with which I am baptized?” When people lack sound judgment, they answer as these two did. They said to Him, “We are able.” The cup is the cup of death, and the Baptism is the blood that will be shed. Yet they say, “We are able.” In any case, Christ did not humiliate them. He gave them a prophecy and said: “The cup of death that I drink, you will drink.” You too will be crucified later. “And with the Baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.” Your blood too will be shed, and in it you will be baptized. “But to sit at My right hand and at My left is not Mine to give.”
What did we say? Those who prove worthy after being tested will sit there. They will not sit there without bearing witness and without laboring. He calls death a cup. A person does not want it; he turns his face away. Bitter indeed is the cup of death.
His Baptism is the blood that will be shed. Our Christ was baptized not only in water, but in blood. Baptism in water is joined to the metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession that we now undertake. Yet the Baptism that brings salvation, if we may call it that, is the Baptism in the blood of our Christ.
He tells them what should have been self-evident.
You yourselves have said it: you will drink this cup of death. And we know what happened to James. They crushed his head with a fuller’s club, the heavy wooden implement used for plunging wool into dye. How thick and heavy it must have been! They split his head open. And John also suffered. How deluded a person is when he lives outside the spirit of Christ! A person must say to Christ: “Give me light from Your own light. You came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in You may truly see.” For He is “the true Light, which comes into the world,” so that human beings may see. Without light, there is no sight.
A human being is not light in himself; he receives light from another, like this lamp. If it is not connected to the power, it is worth nothing. Once connected, it has value, because the light enables it to fulfill its purpose. So it is with the human person. Blessed is the person who receives Christ into his world and seeks His counsel: “Illumine me. Show me how to act and what to do. Should I do this or not?” Tell me, would there have been so many rivers of tears, so many failures, enmities, imprisonments, and deaths if Christ had been allowed a voice in these matters? But people see only this world. Beyond their flesh, beyond the world’s applause and praise, they see nothing. Yet that is not where the true center of gravity lies! You will work, He says, gentlemen; you will labor. It is not for Me simply to appoint you. Besides, I am not speaking of earthly thrones.
You are the ones speaking of those. My throne is above; it is not here. “In the world you will have tribulation.” They crucified Me, and they will crucify you. They persecuted Me, and they will persecute you. They put Me to death, the green wood; what, then, will they do to you, the dry? That was the answer He gave. This is very instructive. Indeed, do you know what another Evangelist says? They sent their mother to Christ to draw this promise from Him—that her sons would be placed at His right and left as His chief attendants. Christ speaks of death and burial, while they speak of a throne. Every human being speaks in this way and ends up like the snail that sings only when it is burning. Have you heard the snail when they place it in the fire? That is when it sings. This is what we are like; this is what we have come to.
“When the ten heard it,” the others became envious when they heard that James and John had gone to ask for the first places. The other ten “began to be indignant with James and John.” In any case, Christ reconciled them again. Once more He found a way to bridge the division between them. “Calling them to Himself, He said to them, ‘You know that those who are considered rulers of the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.’” That, He says, is what the world does. Those who want to rule trample upon others and coerce them. “Yet it shall not be so among you.” We do not have such a way of life, such a proclamation, or such a spirit. If you wish to become great, become a deacon—a servant.
Show your love for your fellow human being by placing yourself at his service. To be a Christian does not mean placing myself at my own service. To be a Christian means placing myself at the service of another. That is how a Christian is recognized; that is what makes a Christian different. “And whoever desires to become first among you shall be the servant of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” He came, He says, to give His life and redeem many. And who are these “many”? The many are those who are willing. Those who desire salvation will be saved; those who do not desire it will not be saved. Christ compels no one. He has freely prepared salvation for every human being and says, “Come and receive it.” One comes; another does not. The one who comes according to the terms Christ has given is saved.
The other person is lost, not because Christ failed to take him into account, but because he himself was unwilling. Even when we want electricity from the power company, someone comes to inspect the installation. Has it been done properly? Are the meters, fuses, resistors, and everything else in order? And if anything is faulty, they do not connect the power. How, then, will God give you salvation when you are unwilling to follow what He has commanded? If you have a certain machine, you are required to have the proper amperage, the proper resistors, and all the rest. This is the prescribed standard. If you do not follow the company’s requirements, you receive no electricity. The same applies to water and to the telephone. How, then, when it comes to your soul, can you rebel, do whatever you please, and afterward say, ‘I will enter the Kingdom of Heaven’? My dear man, you refuse to listen to the One who established the way—and gave it freely, without requiring you to pay any service charge at all.
Do you think we can draw from all this a small example of how we should live during these remaining days? Let us do so. By the grace of the Lord, we too are going up to Jerusalem. Many will want to go up but will not live long enough to do so; they will go up to the Jerusalem above. Some will depart this life. If it is not someone among us, it will be someone from our neighborhood or from elsewhere. If you read how many people depart each day, you will find that fifty thousand people depart every hour. Every hour, throughout the whole world, fifty thousand depart and go up, while another sixty thousand come down, newly born into this life. Do you understand? A whole city goes up, and another city comes down. Many, then, will have plans and promises; they will have bought tickets and arranged appointments for these days, yet instead they will be taken to the cypresses of the cemetery and find themselves in the Jerusalem above. For death comes in a fraction of a second, at an unexpected moment. It asks no one’s permission, respects no one, and is utterly unmoved.
It has a face of iron. It spares neither poor nor rich, neither powerful nor beautiful, nor anyone else. So, if we truly desire and believe this—and I pray that we do—we should not merely go up to this earthly Jerusalem to understand what happened, when Christ was crucified, and why He was crucified. If we also want to reach the Jerusalem above, which I pray all of you may attain, then we must make this small effort. We too must lay down every sin we have. There is a way. Metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession put everything in order and reconcile a person with God once again. Holy Communion is what brings a person to the fullness of his true worth and gives him the ticket to pass upward. So, if you see any shortcomings in yourselves, attend to them. Those of you who have not yet begun abstaining from meat, begin now and continue from this point onward.
Go to confession; go and make your confession. ‘But what, on Great Friday?’ Go now! You will still have time to sin again—the world will not come to an end. No one is taking your wallet from you. Do not make excuses about distance, being away from home, priests being unavailable, or your having been absent. Let us make it possible for Christ’s Passion this year not to remain merely Christ’s suffering, but to become saving for us. May it not be only Christ’s Passion, but salvation for us as well. And may God count us worthy to witness His Resurrection both here in this world and in the world to come. This I wish for one another and for everyone.

παραμένει ως ένοικος, όχι ως κάτοικος, ως ένοικος, και ό,τι ώρα θέλει το αφεντικό του κοινοποιεί: «Έξω». Αυτά πρέπει του ανθρώπου να του γίνουνε πίστη και, όταν του γίνουνε πίστη αυτά, τα αφομοιώσει και θα καταλάβει, θα αλλάξει αμέσως πολίτευμα, που θα είναι συμφέρον και γι' αυτόν τον κόσμο και για τον άλλον που θα πάει, τον οποίο δεν μπορεί να αντιπαρέλθει. Ό,τι βλέπετε, ο θάνατος είναι κάτι το οποίο δεν μπορεί να ξεφύγει κανένας. Και αυτός ο Θεός που έγινε άνθρωπος πέθανε και αυτή η μητέρα που γέννησε τον Θεό πέθανε. Είναι ένα γραμμάτιο το οποίο το οφείλουμε, θα το εξοφλήσουμε οπωσδήποτε, είτε το θέλουμε είτε όχι, είτε αναγκαστικώς είτε θεληματικώς. Και εδώ, λοιπόν, αυτός τους ομιλεί το τι θα συμβεί. Μας έχει μιλήσει και σε εμάς τι θα συμβεί. Δεν έχει μιλήσει σε εμάς τι θα συμβεί; Εμείς βλέπουμε μέχρι του θανάτου, βλέπουμε μέχρι του τάφου. Τι γίνεται τώρα πίσω από το μάρμαρο;
την πρόσκαιρον ζωή, δεν κάνει τίποτα ή όσα κάνει για το πνεύμα, για την ψυχή. Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος σε μια του ομιλία λέγει: «Η ψυχή με το σώμα είναι συνεταίροι, είναι δύο συνεταίροι, συνεργάζονται». Γιατί, λέει, άνθρωπε, είσαι άδικος και δεν προσέχεις να μοιράσεις δίκαια τους κόπους σου και τις φροντίδες σου; Περιποίησε, λέγει, το σώμα τόσο, που να περιποιείσαι ταυτόχρονα την ψυχή. Δεν θέλεις να δώσεις, λέει, τη μείζονα στην καλυτέραν συνεταίρον, που είναι η ψυχή, όσα της αξίζουν;
χωρίς μετάνοια, χωρίς εξομολόγηση, χωρίς αναγνώριση, να πάμε στον Επιτάφιο, να του βγάλουμε τον Επιτάφιο και να τον κοροϊδεύουμε και, εκ των υστέρων, να σταθεί στην πόρτα και να περάσουμε από κάτω. Γιατί; Τι είναι αυτό; Ξέρεις τι πάει να πει αυτό; Σου βάζω μετάνοια. Εσένα στο κεφάλι μου θα έχω. Πες μου τι έχεις να μου πεις. Κάτω από σένα θέλω να είμαι. Αυτή είναι η εκδήλωση. Δεν είναι για να κάνεις αρσενικό παιδί ή να της περάσεις τον πονοκέφαλο της αλληνής και τις δαιμονίες οι δικές μας. Είναι μετάνοια. Σου βάζω μετάνοια, υπακούω, σε παραδέχομαι. Και είναι ειρωνεία. Ζητούν οι άνθρωποι σήμερα, αγαπητοί μου, θαύματα. «Εγώ», λέει, «αν δεν δω, δεν πιστεύω». Μα δεν βλέπεις το μεγαλύτερο θαύμα, που σε ανέχεται; Υπάρχει μεγαλύτερο θαύμα από αυτό;
Η ανεξικακία του Χριστού. Κάνουμε εμείς όλα αυτά τα στραβά και ανάκολουθα και να μας ανέχεται ακόμη. Θέλεις μεγαλύτερο θαύμα; Αυτό είναι το μεγαλύτερο θαύμα. Το ότι ανέστησε κάποιος στην Καπερναούμ, ξέρω εγώ, κάποιον αλλού κλπ., αυτό δεν είναι τίποτα μπροστά σε αυτό: που εμείς να τον ειρωνευόμεθα κατ' αυτή την έννοια και αυτός να μας ανέχεται ακόμη και να μας περιμένει. Αυτή είναι η ανεξικακία. Και εκείνο που λέγει για τον Ιούδα, Μεγάλη Πέμπτη, «Δόξα τη μακροθυμία σου, Κύριε», πρέπει για κάθε Ιούδα από μας να το λέγει αυτό το πράγμα. Για κάθε έναν από μας. Διότι όταν εμείς, εν πλήρει 20ώ αιώνι, που προσεληνώθημεν και κάνουμε ότι μάθαμε πράγματα κλπ., δεν θέλουμε να παραδεχτούμε εν γνώσει το Ευαγγέλιο, να το απορρίψουμε. Πώς, γιατί να μας ανέχεται; Μας έχει ανάγκη για ψηφοφόρους; Γιατί, πώς τον φαντάζεσαι τον Χριστό, ότι μας έχει ανάγκη;
θα είχε σωθεί πολλές φορές, όχι μια φορά, πολλές φορές. Αλλά εμείς στεκόμαστε απλώς τυπικά. Η συνήθεια αυτή, αυτός ο οδοστρωτήρ, μας τα ισοπεδώνει όλα και μένουμε εκεί που μένουμε. Ανεβαίνουμε λοιπόν στα Ιεροσόλυμα άδικοι. Ο Χριστός είπε: «Όστις θέλει οπίσω μου ελθείν, αράτω τον σταυρόν αυτού και ακολουθείτω μοι». Πού είναι ο σταυρός; Άνθρωποι δεν απόκρεψαν ακόμη. Ούτε τη χύτρα, ούτε τη σάρκα, ούτε τη γλώσσα, ούτε τα μάτια. Τίποτα δεν ενήστευσαν αυτές οι μέρες. Όπως ζούσανε, περάσανε μέσα και θα βγουν από το άλλο μέρος. Πού οδεύεις, αδελφέ; Για πού πηγαίνεις; Πού να σταυρώσω δικό σου; Πού να σταυρώσεις τη σάρκα σου, τις επιθυμίες σου, τα χέρια σου, τα μάτια σου, για να περιποιηθείς την αθάνατη ψυχή σου. Πότε φυτρώνουν τα κρεμμύδια, αγαπητοί;
