Summary
Fasting is presented as a divine command whose neglect contributed to Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Paradise and whose observance helps restore humanity to God. Drawing on the Fathers, the lecture connects gluttony with intensified temptations and portrays fasting as a weapon in spiritual warfare against demons and sexual passions. Christians should begin gradually, teach fasting within the family, distinguish Wednesday and Friday as solemn days, and practice both dietary and bodily continence for the sanctification of soul and body.

During this period, besides the other matters we discussed—things we witnessed that were truly serious incidents—I thank you. This evening I was speaking about a disputed subject, one that carries great weight in such matters: the subject of fasting. We have had occasion to speak about it at other times as well. But now we come again to...
So, the various people coming forward for the first time must also be informed. And as for us, who say that by now we are doing something, perhaps we too are still falling short. We have nothing to lose from hearing it again. So do not consider this subject irrelevant to the present time. Just as Holy Communion is a sign that is spoken against, so fasting too is a sign and a reality that is spoken against. A person does not want to fall out with his belly, so he finds all kinds of excuses. Yet, as we said a few days ago, failure to keep the fast was the cause of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Paradise.
Therefore, if we follow the principle that healing comes through the opposite course, then, if we wish to return, we must do what those who were expelled failed to do. Basil the Great puts it beautifully in one of his homilies.
“Let us fast, then,” he says, “that we may return to Paradise.” Since they did not fast, he says, let us fast so that we may return to Paradise. And yet many regard fasting as something obsolete. I remember—and you will remember as well—how the subject of fasting...
It saved Nineveh from destruction. How did those people know that fasting was such a great and powerful weapon, which they could set before God when the sentence had already been pronounced? Thus says the Lord: “Three days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” It sounded irrevocable. He did not say, “Unless you repent, it will be destroyed.” Three days—and on the third day Nineveh would be destroyed. The decree had been signed by God. What did they set against this decree of God? Fasting. And who gave the command? The king. Did the king know that fasting possessed such power? Clearly, he did. Then why had he provoked the wrath of God, bringing destruction upon himself and his kingdom? Because until that moment he had kept this weapon shut away in the cupboard, cast aside.
Then he took it out. When did he take it out? When everything was in danger. If you remember, he commanded that neither man nor beast should eat or drink. “Who knows,” he said, “whether God may relent?” And when God saw this conversion of the people, He relented and did not burn Nineveh; He did not destroy Nineveh. What, then, can you say to this, O man? Do you not see the power of fasting? Do you not see all the uproar surrounding fasting? Do you not see the warfare being waged against fasting, just as fiercely as against Holy Communion? Whenever you see an uproar, know that something serious is taking place. Whenever you see...
Opposition, arguments, and the like, know that this is something that does not serve Satan’s interests, and so he creates this turmoil. Where his will is being done, there is no discussion at all. Where his will is not being done, that is where all the controversy arises. Unfortunately, there are many who are regarded as advanced Christians, even as so-called spiritual people, yet they are found indulging their bellies. They are not spiritual people; they are still fleshly people. Spiritual people, unless they have health reasons, do not indulge their bellies, but always take the law of God into account. For the Canon (ecclesiastical law), if a person is...
A clergyman, deposes him; and if he is a layman, excommunicates him when he does not fast on Wednesday and Friday or during Great Lent. What more can you say after that? Was the Holy Spirit mistaken? Were the Holy Apostles mistaken? They were not mistaken; what they said was right. We are the ones who have gone wrong. We are the ones looking for ways to set these things aside. But they cannot be set aside. If, of course, there is a health reason, then we surrender the point. The illness itself inflicts upon the body the hardship that we seek through fasting. What, then, are we to do? Are we to deliver the final blow to the body?
Are we perhaps to send it to the cemetery, a neurological clinic, or a sanatorium? God does not desire that. Fasting does not kill the body; it kills the passions. That is the purpose of fasting. And I do not mean only the present fast, but the fasting observed throughout the whole year and throughout a person’s life. In every year of his life, a person must fast on the appointed days.
It is in a person’s interest, not only spiritually but even physically, if he cares to consider it. You know, twice a week—Wednesday and Friday, and often Monday as well, since many also fast on Monday—it is like cleansing the stomach, and that is no small matter. You let it rest from heavy work; you give it light food, fruit, grapes, juices, salads, and so forth. You allow the pancreas, the liver, and the rest to rest from Tuesday evening until Thursday at noon, and from Thursday evening until Saturday at noon. Do you realize what that means? It is a very important matter for our health today.
The world is not merely foolish—it has gone mad. I know that practically everyone has a refrigerator which defrosts itself automatically; and if it is not automatic, the lady of the house defrosts it from time to time, cleans it, puts it in order, and so forth, so that it will work properly and avoid damage. Well, does this body, which has been working for so many years, not need defrosting? Does it need no cleansing? Does it not need a little rest? Nothing at all? And God has given us so many wonderful foods, yet we keep them at a distance—the natural fruit sugar the body needs. If people ate fruit, would we have so much heart disease? Certainly not; it would be reduced to a minimum.
Fruit helps the circulation of the blood and greatly benefits the heart, yet people leave it aside. “Bring us some fruit too,” they say—but only after we have poured all of Egypt and the Nile into ourselves. What will you do with the fruit then? What good will fruit do on top of all that? Eat only fruit and see how you feel. Must the time come when a doctor prescribes it as a diet? You do not like it when it is called fasting. But when a doctor prescribes a diet, everyone immediately surrenders, because breaking the diet means going to keep company with the cypress trees in the cemetery. That is what it means. The doctor forbids cigarettes, forbids wine, forbids fat, and forbids many other things. Can Christ forbid nothing?
We pay for these things even here in this life. We pretend to be clever, though it does us no good. A poisoned mouse, at least, does not pay for the poison it eats; but we pay for our poison. With our own hands we destroy ourselves. Leave the soul aside; leave religion aside. Is this self-restraint, this fasting, good for you, O man? I ask you: is it physically beneficial to you or not? Of course it is.
These things sound strange to you.
Let people ask. If someone does not want to question himself, let him ask someone else. “I suffer from dizziness,” he says, “and I have mineral deposits here.” After you have eaten all the cattle in the world, what do you expect to have? What do you expect to accumulate there—angels? No, angels will not gather there. Yet we refuse to consider the matter from the standpoint of health. I tell you: leave the soul aside, since he takes no account of it; leave Christ aside, and leave His Church aside. Is fasting good for you or not? It is good for you—of course it is. A person will move about with ease and make his stay in this world less painful. We have all become bent and twisted. From what—from fasting? No, from rich food. I went to the doctor the other day and said, “Should I begin insulin, since I cannot bring my blood sugar under control?” He replied, “That is what you must bring under control—your eating.”
That is how it was, and that is how it still is. Yet we refuse even to discuss the matter from the standpoint of our bodily health. There are Christians through and through, regarded as spiritual people, who have never abstained from meat before a fast. They still have not done so, and never will. Yet others—the clever ones, the shrewd ones, the supposed luminaries—regard them as spiritual people. What kind of spiritual people are they? Go and look at their table. If they were truly spiritual people, they would accept the things of the Spirit. Yet people act as though nothing has been ordained. As you know, many things are debated in the world, and many excuses have been invented to justify the unjustifiable. “The servant of God fasts because he has nothing to eat,” one glutton used to say. “Did you know that, my dear Dimitri?”
“I know,” I told him, “but I also know something else said by the divine John Chrysostom.” He asked, “What did the divine Chrysostom say?” I replied, “The divine Chrysostom said: ‘Are you rich? Is fasting only for the poor? Take care lest you dishonorably drive fasting away from your table.’” “And what will happen?” he asked me. “Fasting will go and denounce you before the Lawgiver, and He will replace your riches with poverty. You will lose what you have. Or He will bring illness upon you, so that you see these foods from afar but cannot touch them. Then we shall discuss the matter.” “Does he really say that?” he asked. “He says exactly what I have told you,” I replied. That is what he says, because some people think fasting is only for the poor.
They imagine it was invented to console those poor people who have nothing to eat. What do you think? We have plenty to eat; our refrigerators are full and are replenished every day—so Lady Fasting is shown the door. No. John Chrysostom says that if you dishonorably drive her away and fail to honor her, she will denounce you before the Lawgiver. Here is Lady Wednesday: welcome her in. Here is Lady Friday: welcome her in. Here is Lady Great Lent: welcome her in. Then both material and spiritual matters will go well and be blessed. My beloved, we lose not only eternal blessings; as I have told you, we lose temporal blessings too. If fasting enters the home, things will change. Many matters become easier. Many temptations flee from that home; they cannot remain there.
Once there was a man possessed by a demon. They took him to many people whom they believed capable of casting the demon out of him. Eventually they took him to an ascetic, who said: “My child, I do not have the power to cast out demons; I have not been given such a gift. But I do have love for my brother. Let the demon come out of him and enter me. I will take it upon myself and give him relief.” So the demon came out of the man and entered the elder. It remained within the elder for fourteen years. Out of love, he took upon himself another man’s demon.
One day he saw a dog coming out of his mouth and going away. He said to it, “Where are you going?” It answered, “I am leaving.” “I am not driving you away,” he said. “Stay as long as you wish.” The demon replied, “How can I stay? Can I live on date pits?” And it left of its own accord. The gentleman cannot exercise self-restraint; the lady cannot exercise self-restraint; the young man cannot exercise serious self-restraint for even a few days. And what did you do on other occasions? What did you achieve? Have you ever thought about it? No, you have not. And why do you not restrain yourself? Who is driving you? Have you ever examined yourself? Have you asked, “What am I? How do I eat? How do I act? What inflames my blood?” Have you ever considered it?
Do you ever consider that it comes from overeating, from rich food? No, you do not. How, then, can it be otherwise? How can it? Listen to a fine saying—I believe it is from Saint John Climacus—about a method Satan uses, one we do not know about. “Know,” he exhorts us, “that the demon often sits upon the stomach.” He comes and sets up his throne there, and then he begins: “I am hungry. I have a craving. I feel this; I feel that.” You eat, but you are not satisfied. You eat again, but still you are not satisfied. And so you go around and around, constantly at the refrigerator and in the kitchen. Gluttony keeps you going in and out of the kitchen and makes sure that you are never satisfied.
It makes sure you never have enough. It sits there and keeps giving you cravings, making you want to eat. And so he says, “Even if a man eats all of Egypt and drinks the River Nile,” the demon will still make him hungry and thirsty. This, he says, is the work of the devil. Once he has made the man eat and drink his fill, that fellow leaves and sends in a demon with another specialty. It is as though the plumbers have finished their work and now the farriers have come in, you understand? So he goes and sends the next one, because these demons have their specialties too. One is the demon of gluttony, another of fornication, another of relations between men, another of blasphemy, and so on. “After the meal, the unholy demon withdraws and informs the demon of fornication what has happened,” and then he sends the other one in.
“I have prepared him for you. Go and tell him what has happened.” In other words: “I have him ready. Take him, stir him up, beginning with his belly, and see to the rest.” Does it happen this way or not? It does. Could this holy man be lying? This is exactly what happens. But our ideas are all confused and senseless. “Just do not do evil; do not hurt anyone. Is God really going to judge you over what you eat? You people are fanatics.” Some other great luminary says that, you understand. So perhaps you do no outward evil—but how much harm are you doing within yourself? If I kill a hundred people, I still have time to repent and be saved. But if I kill myself, I have no time left.
That is the point. It is not a matter of saying that if a person does evil, he may fast, but if he does good, he need not fast, though we do meet people who think this way. “I harm no one. I trouble no one. Whether I eat is a separate matter. God is not going to judge me for that.” Is it written anywhere, or has any commandment been given, that if you do evil you must fast, but if you do not do evil you need not fast? Is that written anywhere? I have found the very opposite, in Matthew chapter 23: “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” So yes, you will fast as well.
You will refrain from evil and you will fast. You will not break up a married couple, and you will fast. You will not blaspheme, and you will fast. Both are required: “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” That is what Christ says; that is what I find. Why, then, do some of us compare...
Ourselves with other people? “I know someone who fasts and eats nothing, but he has done this and that; he has killed someone, or he blasphemes, or he steals.” Yes, you know about him, but God also knows that you are not doing what He commanded. What God will do with that man is His concern, not yours. He will not bring someone worse than you in order to judge you by comparison. You will give an account for your own deeds. Some people do not want to accept this. They simply do not grasp it. And as for this matter...
I am speaking to you about, a person receives a reward from God when God sees him struggling. Basil the Great says: “In every Church there are angels who record the names of those who fast. Angels are present in every Church, enrolling those who fast.” Now pay attention: “Do not, for the sake of a little pleasure in food, lose your place in the angel’s register,” so that the angel does not write your name in his book. “Do not make yourself liable to be reported as a deserter to the One who enlisted you.” In other words, the angel will present you as a deserter, and you will be held accountable.
We do not believe in spiritual realities, and that is precisely why we behave as we do. If we believed that all this is true, we would look to those who had no selfish motive, who lived these things and left them to us as an example. Some say, “But is it possible to fast?” Yes, it is possible. Again, we are not speaking about the sick, but about those who are able. Those who are able can fast. Either they do not know, or they do not want to, or I do not know what else is holding them back. But they should know that it can be done. “But it is forty days. I fast during the first and the last week.” That is a rule of your own making. It is called the Forty Days of Great Lent, not the Two Weeks.
If you understand the word, Great Lent means forty days. Christ fasted for forty days and then began His public ministry. He contended with the devil, with His flesh, and with the world. Have you read about the temptations of the Lord, and how He overcame them? Through a forty-day fast. Read chapter 4 of Matthew or chapter 4 of Luke, and you will find the events there. If you want more detail, I have given three talks on the temptations of the Lord. You will find everything there. He too—God Himself—took up this weapon. Now, if you ask people, “Do you want to go to Paradise?” the answer will be, “Who does not?” Unless someone is so stubborn that he says he does not. Once, while I was giving a talk at Sotiria Hospital...
A swaggering fellow was pacing up and down outside in the corridor, playing with his worry beads. He would not come inside. “I know all that already.” Someone said to him, “Do you not want to listen?” “I know all that,” he replied, and he continued pacing back and forth. Then, I do not know how the conversation turned this way, but he said, “I do not want to go to Paradise. I want to go to Hell with the tough guys.” Then go to Hell with the tough guys. If you cannot bear Paradise, that fragrant meadow, then go to Hell with the tough guys. Who is stopping you? I am saying that there are people who deliberately do not want Paradise. But if they do want it, they can attain it. The Prophet Elijah fasted for forty days. Moses fasted for forty days in order to receive the tablets on the mountain.
The Lord fasted for forty days, and ascetics have fasted without water and without food. We cannot undertake such an exhausting fast, especially here in the city, but we can observe a more moderate one, which, as I have said, is good not only for our soul but also for our body. I am not saying that we should undertake that extreme kind of fast. Yet most people cannot adjust even to a moderate one, because our father never spoke to us about fasting, nor did he ever fast himself. Our mother never spoke to us about it, nor did she ever fast herself. Our home never knew seasons of mourning. Everything was always festive. There was eating, drinking, and merrymaking, while everything else was treated as incidental. Are you serious? Will we not at least hold our candle?
We will watch Lycabettus celebrate Pascha and light our own candle from the balcony, because most of us are Christians, after all. How can such a person now adjust and enter into the meaning of fasting? He cannot understand it; he cannot take it in. A person needs to make a small effort and begin from nothing. First, during ordinary times outside the fasting seasons, he should try to distinguish the two days, Wednesday and Friday. The Jews also fasted. Remember the Pharisee: “I fast twice a week,” the servant of God declared. They fasted on Monday and Thursday, because they believed that Moses went up to receive the tablets on Thursday and came down on Monday. We fast on Wednesday and Friday. For us, Wednesday is a dark and solemn day. It is the day on which that lawless council, with Judas’s assistance...
Reached its final decision that Christ had to be removed. It is a day of mourning. Friday is the culmination, the final seal upon all the wickedness of Satan and those who opposed Christ. These are, in any case, two days of mourning, as we might say. Friday itself went into mourning: the sun hid its light, the day was covered in black and clothed in darkness, and all humanity mourned with it. Therefore, someone who believes in Christ and in the Passion of Christ, and who is called a Christian not merely on his identity card, must set these two days apart. If he is unwilling to observe them fully and mourn as he would when there is a death in his own home, consider what he would say then: “I am not laying a feast. My mother has died, or my father, my brother, my child, my wife, or my husband.” Would you set a banquet before people? You could not. As a human being, you would not do such a thing. How, then, can you do it as a Christian?
Such a person, then, is an Antichrist: he does not accept that Christ was seized and suffered on those two days, and so on. He does not accept it. For that very reason, I do not know how else to describe such a person. We must therefore begin, as I have said, with the easier things, so that we may gradually move on to the stricter ones. At the very least, we must distinguish these two days, Wednesday and Friday. I am not speaking here about Great Lent, because during this season there is another special canon, a rule of prayer, which treats every day as mournful except Saturday, Sunday, and the Annunciation. All the other days are days of mourning. That is why, if you go to Church, you will see the Holy Table covered in black or purple. It puts on white only on Friday evening, when the Salutations to the Theotokos are chanted, in order to celebrate the following day, when the fast is relaxed.
At least these two days, then, must be set apart. Once a person begins there, little by little he will be able to go further. If I have had no training—if I have never run fifty metres, or a hundred, two hundred, or three hundred—and they suddenly make me run a thousand metres, they will need a dustpan to scoop me up at the finish. That is how it is. A person becomes accustomed little by little, but he must begin. I say this especially to parents, to those who are raising children. Pay attention to this. Do not always indulge your children. If the doctor says, “Rice water for fifteen days,” then they will have rice water for fifteen days. But now that Christ says it—and Christ has the power to protect your child—take care to do this. Do it, and if one day you find I was wrong, then curse me for what I have said. Make this distinction between the days. You do not want to deprive the child even a little? Then do not deprive him.
Nothing will happen to the child. But make him some tea in the morning. He does not need butter and jam and all the other things people serve. Let him have tea on Wednesday and Friday. Prepare a meal cooked with oil for him to eat when he comes home from school. Our Christ has given us so many good foods. Nothing will happen to him. Let him at least learn to distinguish the days: today there will be no meat and no fish. Something is being planted within him, even if he never consciously realizes it. The time will come when Christ will seize him and bring him crashing to his knees. Then he will remember what his father taught him. He will remember what his mother did at home. Young people may wander for a while; we know this from ourselves. It is like the flu: it must run its course. Let him go off and have his fill. Let him run his course all the way to Crete; eventually he will return. But if no seeds have been planted within him, if he has seen none of this in his home, where will he find it? In the marketplace?
Will he find it in a nightclub? From his girlfriend? Where will he find it? From her boyfriend? Where will she find it? This is a struggle for the Christian; it is a great undertaking. Especially in these days, go into homes and observe what happens when a family is divided: perhaps one person is a Christian and the others are not, or perhaps most are Christians and one is not. There is a great war in such a home. You should hear the blasphemies against the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ! You should hear what is said about fasting. This requires discernment. Of course, it is good if everyone has either closed the matter or opened it together; but when the household is divided, the situation is not good. Discernment and care are needed. And if you will permit me to say that fasting concerns not only food but also bodily continence, what would certain men and women say to me?
Some people think these things are of no importance. Who said that? Who said such a thing? These acts are not blessed by God. And if a child happens to be conceived on a feast day or at another such time, remember what the people say: “That child was conceived on a feast day,” and the child may break your heart for the rest of your life. God is just. He sees. I am not speaking about someone who is ignorant; that person has mitigating circumstances in the eyes of God. I am speaking to Christians who may raise their hand to make the sign of the Cross now and then, yet have swept everything else aside and consider it of no importance. Fasting, then, is not only a matter of food, of abstaining from oil.
It is not simply a matter of eating the olive, throwing away the stone, and letting Christ depart, as some people mockingly say. We must also abstain from the marriage bed and from sins of the flesh. We practice spiritual continence. As we said the other day, fasting leads us into these forty days for the sanctification of both soul and body. A human being cannot be understood as soul alone or body alone. The human being is a composite, with two aspects. Without the soul there is no living body, and without the body there is no complete human being. Both belong together. Both, therefore, require appropriate care. People say, “It is nothing.” But we have never struggled. How did we struggle before our wedding? How will we struggle now, after our wedding? Did we struggle then and receive the wedding crowns justly and honorably?
“Crown them with glory and honor.” Why should they be crowned—for their fornication or their adultery? Why give them crowns? They do not deserve them. The crowns are given to those who struggled until Holy Matrimony and came to the wedding as virgins. Then the hymn rightly says, “O Isaiah, dance for joy, for the Virgin...” But what meaning does “O Isaiah, dance for joy” have if the woman is unchaste and the man is a fornicator? If only there were at least metanoia, repentance: “We did what we did. We did not understand. We were young and were led astray,” or whatever else. “We repent, O Lord.” If they had confessed before coming, that would be something. Instead, they come and we even crown them. The woman carries lilies, though she has lived a thoroughly promiscuous life—the lilies of virginity. And the man wears white, though he has left no sin undone—the symbols of purity and virginity. How God tolerates us is another matter. God is not a mere man; He is not Panagopoulos.
He is neither George nor Katina. He is God. He is long-suffering and abundant in mercy, and He awaits man’s return. He does not forgive these things without repentance. He does not bless them. He tolerates them. But “How long shall I bear with you?” That is what He said. “How long shall I bear with you, O faithless and perverse generation?” So who can tell me that God’s long-suffering will last even a fraction of a second longer, and that we will not all go down as Dathan and Abiram did? We know so much. We have reached the moon, yet we do not know what is happening within these twenty-two centimeters inside our own heads. We have landed on the moon, but we have not yet come down to earth. And when we do, it will be a crash landing. It is a terrible thing to make a crash landing. So, as I say, this is not something...
It does not benefit a person, even temporarily. What truly benefits him is to do this here and now. Man is like a lion, yet before pleasure and before his belly, he becomes utterly useless. Utterly useless. He becomes Satan’s plaything. One of the Fathers of our Church has a beautiful saying: “What is stronger than a lion? Yet because of its belly it falls into a trap, and all its strength is brought low.” The lion, that wild beast, is not watchful. The bait gleams before it; it goes to eat it, and the trap catches it.
Then it becomes a plaything. That is how it is.
“Satan is the chief of the demons, and gluttony is the chief of the passions.” The devil is the leader of the demons, and the leader of man’s passions is overeating—gluttony. “Rich food delights the throat, but feeds the sleepless worm of impurity.” How are illicit beds sustained? By fasting? No, by fine eating. How are houses of corruption sustained? How is this whole underworld of the earth sustained? With the finest meats and the finest delicacies...
They eat the richest foods. Take those foods away, and the beds of sin collapse. If a three-day fast were proclaimed, nothing would remain standing. All that lawlessness would disappear. All these things are fed on steaks, choice cuts, delicacies, and every luxury. That is why the Father says, “It feeds the sleepless worm of impurity. An empty stomach prepares a man to keep vigil in prayer.” It enables a person to pray easily. “But a stomach filled to excess leads him into deep sleep.” A person falls asleep. And I do not know whether you have noticed that after eating, even if we eat only a little, we cannot pray as we do if we pray...
Before we eat, we pray differently. “Just as a cloud covers the light of the moon, so the steam of the stomach drives the wisdom of God from the soul.” Were there once as many tutoring schools as there are today, and so many private teachers in the home? Why can children today not grasp their lessons without so much extra help? Because of rich eating. Because of rich eating. I do not wish to offend anyone—and there is a humble person here who knows this firsthand. There was poverty by the sackful. Was there money to send the child to tutoring school? No. He made do with what he had: study amid deprivation and hunger. And he entered medical school with the second-highest score.
Meanwhile, our pampered children struggle for years. A father comes and tells me—not in only one case—“Dimitri, we pay twenty thousand a month for teachers who come to the house.” And every hour the girl stamps her feet. She keeps looking for a chance to run outside. She is like an untamed beast. But why do you feed her like that? Who made her so wild? Have you ever made her fast from the time you began raising her? Do you expect her to become worthy on her own? She hears old people passing by and imagines them young. Even if the father paid not twenty thousand but five hundred thousand, it would not help. A combination of things is needed; that is what I mean. Saint Isaac the Syrian says, “In a body devoted to sensual pleasure...”
“The knowledge of God does not dwell”; it cannot remain there. “And he who loves his own body will not attain the grace of God.” A person must, so to speak, discipline his body and deprive it. You do not give it what harms it, just as you do not give it poison, spoiled food, or something contaminated. The same is true in the spiritual life: you must watch over the body and not give it what it ought not to receive. For we do whatever it wants, rather than what we ought to do. What I want and what I ought to do are two different things. “Satiety with food is the father of fornication.”
An abundance of food—a full belly and fine fare—is the father of fornication.
“But affliction of the belly is a cause of chastity.” When you restrain the belly, tighten its reins, and watch over it, it becomes a cause of chastity: you can resist and remain pure. “He who caresses a lion often tames it, but he who indulges the body makes it wilder still.” A man who gently handles a lion may tame it. But whoever indulges and pampers his body makes it even more savage. A lion may be tamed and cease to harm you; but if you indulge the body, caress it, and give it everything it asks for, it grows still wilder, and you are lost. These are thoughts upon which we need to reflect.
“Master your belly before it masters you.” I suffered from this myself because I did not know it. If I have seven illnesses today, I have them because I did not restrain my belly. “Master your belly,” he says, “before it masters you”—before it knocks you flat on your back, as they say, so that you see everything from down there. “Master your belly before it...” And then you are left with the injections. In other words, you are forced to abstain. Then you will practice self-restraint out of necessity, because if you refuse, you will die an hour sooner. “He who indulges his stomach to satiety”—the man who is careless, deprives it of nothing, and never says no to it—“and yet wishes to conquer the spirit of fornication...”
Some people say, “I am being tempted,” and so forth. Examine the cause. Why are you being tempted? “He who indulges his stomach to satiety,” who does not fast, “and yet wishes to conquer the spirit of fornication,” the desire of the flesh, “is like one who tries to extinguish a fire with oil.” It is as though there were a fire and, instead of pouring water on it, you poured oil on it and then waited for the oil to put it out. That, he says, is exactly what it is like. “When the belly is afflicted, the heart is humbled; but when the belly is indulged, the logismos grows proud.” Your body is a furnace, then: put in fewer coals if you do not want to burst and overflow.
But if you throw into it everything you find, without discerning what is beneficial and what is not, you will be lost. This refusal to fast—this gluttony—“delivered Adam over to death and, through the pleasure of the belly, brought destruction upon the world.” The destruction of the world came through the pleasure of the belly. If, then, we accept what we discussed a few days ago—that man was driven out of Paradise because he did not fast—what must he do in order to return? He must fast. Yet the subject of fasting is misunderstood in many ways today.
Some people hear these things and say, “What strange ideas! Imagine being allowed to eat olives but not the oil that comes from the olive! How very clever! Imagine being allowed to eat taramasalata but not the fish from which the roe comes! I cannot understand such things.” Nor will you ever understand them, because you do not want to understand. “Imagine being allowed to eat a hen’s eggs but not the hen that lays them, because meat is forbidden!” Yes—why should that be impossible? Some years ago my wife was ill and staying in Psychiko, and I brought a doctor friend of mine from Athens. As he was leaving, my wife said, “Dimitri, why don’t you ask the doctor to stay and eat whatever you have there?” He knew I was religious, so he said this to tease me...
“Let me tell you, Mrs. Panagopoulou: if Dimitri eats the egg and I eat the hen that laid it, then I will stay. Otherwise, I will not.” You see, there was no meat. We would eat something permitted for those fasting days. His own mother was religious, so he had heard all these things, but he regarded them as trivial.
I prepared something—perhaps eggs or cheese; I do not remember what I was able to make—and we sat down. Then, teasing him in return, I asked: “Tell me something. Let us put religion aside. Now, if I see that my wife is getting a little better—we had been giving her thin noodles without oil or anything else—may I buy a hen and slaughter it for her? Let us ignore the fast and put religion aside. May she drink a little broth?” “Not a full-grown hen right away,” he told me. “You should find a small, lean chicken.”
“Now I have caught you,” I told him. “Doctor, you are making a distinction between a hen and a young chicken, are you not? That is exactly what the Church does. The Church brings us down gradually. Would you have my wife take off again? You would use the chicken to build her strength back up. In the same way, the Church,” I told him, “brings us gently down from meat. During that week she leaves us eggs, dairy products, and fish, which is lighter, so that by Clean Monday she may bring us gently into the fast. Do you understand, my dear doctor?” “So that is where you are going with this,” he said. That is how it is; it is not something we invented. That is the reason. And take heed: since you are a physician of bodies, become a physician of souls as well, like Saint Panteleimon. The Church understands these matters very well. I eat olives, though now I will stop eating them because they trouble my kidneys.
So now I will not eat even an olive. When I abstain from oil but eat bread and olives, that is dry eating. But if I eat oil—if I have a bowl of bean soup, pour a little extra oil over it, cut a hot loaf of bread, and devour half a kilo—it is as though I had eaten five steaks. Is that not so? Yes, that is the reason. It is not because the olive is sinless while the oil is sinful. And consider the fish from which the roe comes: you spread a little taramasalata on a small piece of bread and eat just enough to sustain yourself. That is the reason. Is one food sinful and damned while the other is holy? Some people do not understand and say, “Listen to the strange things the priests tell us!” They are not strange at all. None of this is strange if you think about it and use reason. This is the point: the Church seeks to take rich foods away from you and lead you to simpler fare.
If you believe these days offer an opportunity for this, then take heed. Do not tear your homes apart. A wife may want to fast, but as soon as her husband hears it, he may say, “Oh no, she is becoming another Soukalas,” and begin blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos. That can happen. Or the husband may fast and the wife may say, “I did not marry a monk,” and so forth. It happens both ways. Or the young lady in jeans, whose boyfriend left her outside the night before, may come home smashing everything and shouting, “I want meat!” Of course—you were chasing after flesh last night, and now you want meat. If you cannot eat meat, will you eat salt? What will you eat? Or the same may happen with a young man, and so on. These things may sound amusing, but this is the reality. No one can tell me otherwise. I speak from personal experience. I did not come down from the stars; I have seen this life. So what are we to do? Shall we break up the home?
We are not going to break up the home over food. Read in the Book of Daniel what Daniel did when he was a captive in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar had taken him captive and ordered that he be fed from the royal table, even during the days when the Jews fasted. Daniel appeared with the others before the official in charge and said, “Let us not eat meat.” “Impossible,” the man replied, “impossible! If the king sees you tomorrow looking weak and sickly, my head will be lost. He will think I am stealing your food rations.” Daniel said, “Test us for ten days. Give us beans, legumes—the text says legumes—and water. If you then see that we are weak, you can decide what to do.” Meanwhile, he prayed. And there was God, with the Book in His hand, working upon the mind of the official in charge. The official took away the portions of food meant for...
There were four young men. He did not give them the royal food, but gave them different food instead. Ten days later, by a wondrous act of God, the king came and tested them. He began asking questions, examining each of them and then the others. And, it says, these four young men were found to be more handsome, healthier, and ten times wiser than the other pampered youths. This is what God does. So, do you want to succeed? Pray to God, and you will see what happens. You may have a spouse who says, “I want a separate pot. I do not know what the rest of you will do, but you will cook meat for me.” Then give that person freedom at once; cook the meat as well as the fasting food at home. If that person is adamant, what will you do? Will you break up the household because of your husband, your wife, or your children? Pray and ask Christ. And do not pray merely with words; pray on your knees. For unless your knees pray first, your words do not reach God.
We speak to Him from far away, and God does not hear such words. Pray on your knees and ask Him, and you will see a miracle in your home. I wish I could tell you about a particular married couple and set their example before you. For thirty years the wife tried to persuade her husband, and just the other day, after thirty years, he came and said to her, “You know, this week I am going to fast too.” Astonishing—truly astonishing! After thirty years of struggle on both sides, after he had put her through years of torment, roasting her, as it were, over the coals, he finally came and said, “I am going to fast too.” How do you or I know when another person will become able to do it? Do not treat that person unjustly. Do not demand something they cannot yet give. Pray that they may acquire it, and then ask it of them. This is love; this is Christianity.
We must be careful. So proceed little by little. I am not telling you to break up your homes, but seek direction from God. And those of you who have health reasons not to fast must not make that decision on your own. Go to your spiritual father, discuss it with him, and receive his blessing. Whether he tells you to eat fish, milk, cheese, eggs, or meat, eat it with his blessing. Do not eat it on your own authority. But use a little discernment: do not go to someone whom you know cannot bear strictness. Some women and men do this: they search for a lenient spiritual father who will permit them to avoid having children while still receiving Holy Communion. They have found such spiritual fathers, and you see people lining up for them. “Do you know anyone?” “I will send you to someone.” So a person obtains a blessing from him, has no children, and receives Holy Communion two or three times a year—as though receiving more often would somehow make matters better.
You received Holy Communion—but what did you accomplish? You knew what you were doing, and you are not absolved of responsibility, because you deliberately sought out someone lenient. For if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit. Will only he fall? You too will fall, because you knew beforehand that he would indulge you. So do not go to someone whom you already know does not fast in his own household, because he cannot readily tell you to do something he does not do himself. Usually there is not enough honesty to say, “My child, I cannot do it myself; but if you can, you should.” That is the truth. Some do not say this. They want others to be as they are, and that is not good. There is, in fact, a Canon—the sixty-ninth Canon of the Holy Apostles—which deposes clergy who do not fast during Great Lent or on Wednesdays and Fridays, and excommunicates laypeople who fail to do so. This is precisely why I say that we should consult our spiritual father.
Let there be a blessing, and then we shall act rightly and with God’s blessing. This is what I wish for you with all my heart.

Κληρικός, τον καθαίρει, και αν είναι λαϊκός, τον αφορίζει, όταν δεν νηστέψει Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή ή Τεσσαρακοστή. Τι μπορείς να μου πεις από εκεί και κάτω; Έκαμε λάθος το Πνεύμα το Άγιον; Έκαμαν λάθος οι Άγιοι Απόστολοι; Δεν έκαμαν λάθος, σωστά είπανε. Εμείς έκαμαμε λάθος. Εμείς αναζητούμε τρόπους να τα βάλουμε στην άκρη αυτά. Δεν πηγαίνουν στην άκρη. Αν υπάρχει, βέβαια, λόγος υγείας, τότε σηκώνονται τα χέρια επάνω. Την κάκωση που θέλουμε να κάνουμε στο σώμα διά της νηστείας την κάνει αυτή η ασθένεια. Και τότε πού θα πάμε; Θα δώσουμε χαριστική βολή πλέον στο σώμα;
Τόσο την κυκλοφορία του αίματος, τόσο βοηθάει την καρδιά, και μένουν στην άκρη. «Φέρ' μας και φρούτο». Ώσπου να ρίξουμε μέσα μας την Αίγυπτο και τον Νείλο μέσα μας, «μας φέρ' και φρούτο από πάνω». Τι θα το κάνεις το φρούτο; Τι θα το κάνεις το φρούτο; Τι θα σου κάνει το φρούτο από πάνω; Φάε μόνον φρούτα και να δεις πώς θα νιώθεις. Πρέπει να έρθει η εποχή να σου το βάλει ο γιατρός σαν δίαιτα, ε; Σαν νηστεία δεν σου αρέσει. Γιατί στη δίαιτα μπροστά όλοι σηκώνουν τα χέρια τους από τον γιατρό. Γιατί παράβαση της δίαιτας πάει να πει η συντροφιά στα κυπαρισσάκια. Αυτό πάει να πει. Κόβει τσιγάρα ο γιατρός, κόβει κρασί ο γιατρός, κόβει λίπος ο γιατρός, κόβει πολλά πράγματα ο γιατρός. Ο Χριστός δεν μπορεί να κόψει τίποτα;
Αυτά τα πράγματα και εδώ πληρώνονται. Κάνουμε τον έξυπνο χωρίς να μας εξυπνεί. Δηλητηριάζεται ο ποντικός, δεν το πληρώνει τουλάχιστον το δηλητήριο που τρώει· εμείς το πληρώνουμε το δηλητήριο. Με τα ίδια μας τα χέρια καταστρέφουμε τον εαυτό μας. Άσε την ψυχή στην άκρη, άσε τη θρησκεία στην άκρη. Σε συμφέρει, άνθρωπε, η εγκράτεια αυτή, η νηστεία αυτή; Σε συμφέρει σωματικώς, του λέγω, ή δεν σε συμφέρει; Πώς δεν σε συμφέρει;
Κάποια ημέρα βλέπει ότι βγαίνει από το στόμα του ένας σκύλος και έφευγε. Του λέει: «Πού πας;» Του λέει: «Φεύγω». «Εγώ», του λέει, «δεν σε διώχνω. Κάτσε όσο θέλεις». «Μπορώ», λέει, «να καθίσω; Με κουκούτσια», λέει, «από το φοίνικα μπορώ να ζήσω εγώ;» Έφυγε μοναχός. Δεν εγκρατεύεται, λέει, ο κύριος, δεν εγκρατεύεται η κυρία, δεν εγκρατεύεται ο νεαρός τόσες ημέρες, σοβαρά. Και τι έκανες τις άλλες φορές; Τι επέτυχες; Σκέφτηκες ποτέ σου; Δεν σκέφτηκες. Και γιατί δεν εγκρατεύεσαι; Ποιος είναι αυτός ο οποίος σε ωθεί; Εξέτασες ποτέ τον εαυτό σου; Είπες: «Τι είμαι; Πώς τρέφομαι; Πώς ενεργώ; Πώς ανάβουν τα αίματά μου;» Το σκέφτηκες ποτέ;
Ο Κύριος ενήστευσε 40 μέρες και νηστέψανε ασκητές χωρίς νερό, χωρίς φαγητό. Εμείς δεν δυνάμεθα να νηστέψουμε αυτήν την εξαντλητική νηστεία, και μάλιστα εδώ στην πόλη, αλλά μια σχετική να κάνουμε, που είναι, λέγω, όχι μόνο για την ψυχή μας αλλά και για το σώμα μας καλό. Δεν λέγω να κάνουμε αυτό, αλλά οι περισσότεροι δεν μπορούν να προσαρμοστούν. Διότι ο πατέρας μας δεν μας μίλησε ποτέ, ούτε ο ίδιος ενήστευσε ποτέ. Η μητέρα δεν μας μίλησε ποτέ, ούτε η ίδια ενήστευσε ποτέ. Το σπίτι μας δεν εγνώρισε πένθιμες περιόδους. Ολοχαρμόσυνα γεγονότα είχαμε. Είχε φαγοπότι και ξεφάντωμα· όλα τα άλλα τα βάζαμε περιστατικά. Πας καλά; Ή δεν θα κρατήσουμε το κερί;
Έκλεισε πλέον την υπόθεση ότι ο Χριστός πρέπει να φύγει από τη μέση. Είναι πένθιμος η ημέρα αυτή. Η Παρασκευή είναι το αποκορύφωμα, το σφράγισμα όλης της κακίας του σατανά και των Εβραίων. Είναι δύο μέρες, εν πάση περιπτώσει, πένθιμες, όπως θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε. Άλλωστε η Παρασκευή επένθησε αφ' εαυτής. Έκλειψε τον ήλιο, εκαλύφθη στα μαύρα, εντύθηκε στα μαύρα και μαζί της ολόκληρη η ανθρωπότης. Κατά συνέπεια, ένας που πιστεύει στον Χριστό και στα πάθη του Χριστού και λέγεται χριστιανός και είναι όχι μόνο στην ταυτότητα, πρέπει αυτές τις δυο μέρες να τις διακρίνει. Αν δεν θέλει να τις διακρίνει απόλυτα και να πενθήσει, όπως όταν έχει πένθος στο σπίτι του: «Δεν στρώνω τραπέζι, ε! Έχω τη μάνα μου πεθαμένη, έχω τον πατέρα μου, τον αδελφό μου, το παιδί μου, τη γυναίκα μου, τον άντρα μου. Θα στήσεις τραπέζι; Δεν μπορείς να στήσεις τραπέζι». Δεν το κάνεις αυτό το πράγμα ως άνθρωπος. Πώς το κάνεις ως χριστιανός;
Δεν παθαίνει τίποτα το παιδί. Κάντε του όμως ένα τσάι το πρωί να πάρει. Δεν είναι να πάρει βούτυρο και μαρμελάδες κλπ., ξέρω εγώ τα άλλα, τι θα πάει εκεί πέρα. Ας πάρει ένα τσάι Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή. Φτιάχτε το λαδερό, που θα γυρίσει από το σχολείο να φάει. Τόσα πράγματα έχει ο Χριστός μας εδώ πέρα. Δεν παθαίνει τίποτα. Να διακρίνει τουλάχιστον τις ημέρες, ότι σήμερα δεν θα έχει κρέας, δεν θα έχει ψάρι. Κάτι γίνεται και ποτέ μην το μάθει. Θα έρθει κάποια στιγμή που θα τον πιάσει ο Χριστός και θα τον κάνει βροντηχτόν κάτω. Και θα τα θυμηθεί του πατέρα. Θα το θυμηθεί της μητέρας στο σπίτι. Όσο να ξεφύγει για τα νιάτα, όπως ξέρετε από τον εαυτό μας, είναι σαν τη γρίπη. Κάνει την τροχιά της. Στη μαζέλα για τρόση. Κάτσε εκεί. Θα κάνει την τροχιά της στην Κρήτη και θα γυρίσει. Έτσι είναι. Άμα όμως δεν έχει σπέρματα τίποτα μέσα του, δεν έχει δει τίποτα σ' αυτό το σπίτι, πού να τα βρει; Θα βρει στην αγορά;
Θα βρεις στη νάιτ κλαμπ; Θα βρεις στη φιλενάδα του; Πού θα τα βρεις; Είσαι ο φίλος της; Πού θα τα βρεις; Είναι αγών για τον χριστιανό, είναι μεγάλο πράγμα. Μάλιστα αυτές τις μέρες θα μπείτε στα σπίτια να παρακολουθήσετε όπου υπάρχουν μοιρασμένοι: είναι κανένας χριστιανός και οι άλλοι δεν είναι, είναι οι περισσότεροι και κάποιος δεν είναι. Έχουμε εκεί πέρα μεγάλο πόλεμο. Πού ν' ακούσεις βλασφημίες, Παναγίες και Χριστούς! Εκεί ν' ακούσεις πράγματα γύρω από τη νηστεία. Και εδώ χρειάζεται —καλό βέβαια είναι να είναι όλοι ή να το έχουν κλείσει ή να το έχουν ανοίξει— άμα είναι μοιρασμένοι, το πράγμα δεν είναι καλό. Και χρειάζεται διάκριση, χρειάζεται προσοχή. Και αν θα μου επιτρέπετε να έλεγα ότι η νηστεία δεν είναι μόνο βρωματική αλλά είναι και σαρκική, τι θα μου λέγανε ορισμένοι και ορισμένες;
Να φάμε την ελιά και να πετάξουμε το κουκούτσι και να φύγει ο Χριστός, που λένε ορισμένοι. Αλλά και από το κρεβάτι και από τη σαρκική αμαρτία θα πρέπει να σταματήσουμε. Κάνουμε την εγκράτειά μας, την πνευματική. Μας εισάγει για εμάς, όπως είπαμε προχθές, εις τας τεσσαράκοντα ημέρας ταύτας, προς αγιασμόν ψυχών και σωμάτων. Λοιπόν, δεν εννοείται άνθρωπος μόνο ψυχικός ή μόνο σωματικός. Ο άνθρωπος είναι μεικτός, είναι διφυής. Χωρίς ψυχή δεν υπάρχει σώμα και χωρίς σώμα δεν υπάρχει άνθρωπος. Είναι και τα δύο. Και τα δύο, λοιπόν, θέλουν προσοχή ανάλογη. «Δεν είναι τίποτα». Αλλά δεν κάναμε ποτέ αγώνα. Πώς κάναμε αγώνα προ του γάμου μας; Πώς θα κάνουμε τώρα μετά τον γάμο μας; Πώς αγωνιστήκαμε τότε και πήραμε τα στεφάνια δίκαια, τίμια;
Αυτό, αν νομίζετε ότι αυτές οι ημέρες είναι τέτοιες που προσφέρονται, ας το προσέξουμε. Μη διαλύσετε τα σπίτια σας, γιατί μπορεί η σύζυγος να θέλει να νηστέψει και, μόλις ακούσει ο σύζυγος «ωχ, θα γίνει και δεύτερος Σουκαλάς», να την αρχίσει στις Παναγίες. Μπορεί. Ή μπορεί ο σύζυγος να νηστέψει και η σύζυγος να πει «εγώ δεν πήρα καλόγερο, εγώ είμαι έτσι» κλπ. Και τα δυο πράγματα. Ή να έρθει η δεσποινίς με το τζιν, που την άφησε απ' έξω ο φίλος της το βράδυ, και να αρχίσει να σπάει γυαλιά, καρφιά: «Εγώ θέλω κρέας». Βέβαια, εκεί που τραβιόσουνα κρέας τώρα. Δεν μπορεί να φας, θα φας αλάτι; Εγώ θα φας; Τι θα φας; Ή ο νεαρός και ούτω καθεξής. Ίσως να δημιουργούν ιλαρότητα αυτά, αυτή είναι η πραγματικότητα. Δεν μπορεί να μου πει κανένας. Εγώ μιλώ από ατομικό πειραματισμό. Αν ήρθα από τ' άστρα, με δω, τη ζωή αυτή. Τι θα κάνω, θα πει κανείς; Θα το διαλύσουμε;
