Summary

Christ’s Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension complete the necessary stages of the Divine Economy before the promised descent of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but the third divine Person of the Holy Trinity, distinct in person yet one in essence with the Father and the Son. Christ founded the Church, and the Holy Spirit continues to build it, so the Acts of the Apostles remain spiritually extended through the Church’s ongoing life and mission.

Our last talk, as you know, was about the Ascension of our Lord. It was the very day of the Ascension, and we spoke about the Lord’s Ascension. We said that the Lord’s Ascension is the next-to-last event in the whole Divine Economy. One momentous event still remains: “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead”—that is, the Second Coming.

So the Lord’s Ascension is a necessary condition for the Second Coming. The Lord’s Ascension is also a necessary condition for Pentecost, because the Holy Spirit would not have descended unless our Christ had completed the work He came to accomplish on earth. And unless He had returned, as we said, victorious and bearing the trophies of victory, to the place from which He came—to the right hand of the Father—the Holy Spirit would not have come. Indeed, our Christ told us, “It is to your advantage that I depart from you, because when I go, I will send you another Paraclete.”

Likewise, as we know, the Cross of our Christ was a necessary condition for the coming of the Holy Spirit. In the seventh chapter of John we read, “The Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified”—that is, He had not yet been crucified. The Cross, therefore, and consequently the Resurrection of our Christ, are necessary conditions for the descent of the Holy Spirit. The fact that the Holy Spirit came—and that this is a historical event—is proof that our Christ returned to His place and came to the right hand of the Father. This is where the Protomartyr Stephen saw Him when he prayed before being stoned. If we read the relevant passage, we find that he saw our Christ at the right hand of the Power. This is proof that He reached the right hand—the right hand of the Father, as our Creed also says.

So each feast depends upon the one before it. The Ascension presupposes the Resurrection; the Resurrection, the Death; the Death, the Crucifixion; the Crucifixion, the Nativity; and the Nativity, the Annunciation, and so forth. Thus, the Ascension and Pentecost are closely connected. The day after tomorrow we shall celebrate this event: the descent of the Holy Spirit on the fiftieth day, from which Pentecost takes its name. The counting, of course, begins with Pascha. From Pascha until the day after tomorrow there are fifty days: forty days until the Ascension and another ten days from the Ascension until Pentecost. There was a Pascha in the Old Testament, just as

there was also a Pentecost in the Old Testament. The Jews had three great feasts: Pascha, the Feast of Tabernacles, and Pentecost. At Pentecost, people who believed in the one God, such as the Jews, would gather from every place where they lived and go to Jerusalem to celebrate the feasts from Pascha through Pentecost. During those days, this great event—the descent of the Holy Spirit—also took place in Jerusalem. Although our Christ had gone there, ten full days passed before the Holy Spirit was sent. In a sense, He left them waiting so that their faith might grow warm. You know, the tension of waiting...

strengthens a person’s faith. It served, so to speak, as a warming-up of their faith. And indeed, after no great length of time—only ten days—what the Father had promised took place, and what Christ had said would come, came. One tradition, which our Church accepts in a certain sense, says that during those nine days—from the forty-first, the forty-second, and the forty-third day through the forty-ninth—our Christ, the conqueror of death, received each day the veneration of one of the Nine Orders of Angels.

When the nine Orders had been completed, and all had come and venerated the Victor, the fiftieth day arrived. Since the Father had accepted the sacrifice of Jesus and the matter between humanity and God had been set right, nothing now prevented the Holy Spirit from coming to restore divine adoption to humanity. This thought is recorded in these words: “After the Ascension”—that is, it says, after the Ascension—“when ten days had passed, the Holy Spirit came.”

Ten days passed, and then the Holy Spirit came. He did not come immediately when Christ was taken up, “so that He might make the disciples more fervent as they awaited Him.” He kept them in expectation, waiting for Him. “Some say that on each of those days, each one of the angelic Orders approached in turn and venerated that deified flesh.” Do you know why I mention this? To show the honor bestowed upon human flesh in heaven because of our Christ. As Paul writes in the final verse of the sixth chapter of Hebrews, He became “the forerunner on our behalf.” The human person is a great thing.

Yet man does not want to understand it. Sin prevents him from understanding what a human being is. Since God Himself paid the price for him, since God Himself sacrificed Himself for him, what, then, is this human being? Job puts it most beautifully in his book of Holy Scripture. Have you read in the book of Job how he speaks with God and asks Him: “What am I, after all? Tell me. You visit me every day; You pursue me; You remain close to me and give me no rest anywhere. What am I, after all?” How could he comprehend what a human being is? Only the One who created man knows what man is. We do not know what we are. That is why we sell ourselves so cheaply to the devil. That is why. The angels came, it says, one Order each day, and venerated the deified flesh—not God.

They venerated the deified flesh. That is something altogether different! What a great honor it is for human nature to reach heaven. What do you receive in Holy Communion? Do you not receive God? What do you become? What are you? If your flesh is nourished by the Body and Blood of God—if you truly nourish it with this and do not go without it for many years—and if you receive it as food for your soul, then what are you? Can you understand what you are? Why does the devil pursue you so fiercely? Because you are God’s possession. If we asked God simply to show us, as far as a human being is able to see, what we are, we would never follow the devil. Likewise, if the devil revealed what his presence truly is, no one would ever follow him. But God does not wish to compel us. We must accept it willingly, seek it ourselves, and go there of our own free will.

“Thus, each of the Orders venerated that deified flesh,” one on each day. “When the nine days had been completed”—when the nine Orders had passed—“on the tenth day the Paraclete came, reconciliation having been accomplished through Jesus.” Since Jesus settled humanity’s account with God, what is there to hold us back? Nothing remains to hold us back. Let the Holy Spirit descend, then, to sanctify human beings, so that they may once again become children of God and receive the divine adoption they had lost. This is the meaning. Now, both at Pentecost and after Pentecost, there is much upon which one may reflect. There are many parallels, as I told you, between the Old

and New Testaments, between the events and feasts of the old age of the Law and those of the age of grace. There are many such parallels. “Fifty days after Pascha,” it says, recalling the Old Law, the number fifty is fulfilled. “For Israel, after crossing the Red Sea and after fifty days had passed, received the Decalogue.” We too have crossed over. Pascha means a crossing, a passage. Pascha is not the roast lamb. Pascha is a Hebrew word meaning exodus. We came out from the spiritual Pharaoh, from the devil, and set out for the Promised Land. We came out of Egypt and crossed toward the Promised Land. There, it says, after they had crossed the sea,

fifty days later God gave them the Law on Sinai; He gave them the written word. “When fifty days had passed,” it says, “they received the Decalogue.” There it was a mountain; here, the upper room. There, fire—read the account and see what took place in the preparation and all the rest, so that Moses might be counted worthy to ascend and receive the Law—and you will find many parallels. Here too there is fire, in tongues as of fire. There, thunder and thick darkness; here, the sound of a mighty rushing wind. If one wishes to seek these parallels, one will find many, just as one finds many concerning the person of Jesus.

One also finds them concerning the third person of the Holy Trinity, because the Holy Spirit is God. He is not a breeze, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses say, nor is He an energy of God, nor anything of that kind. He is a person. And in this regard even we, though we are called Orthodox, do not have a proper understanding, because hardly anyone concerns himself with the Holy Spirit. People speak about God; they speak about our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saints. But they do not speak about the Paraclete. People do not know about the Holy Spirit—whether He exists or what work He performs. For this very reason, they neither prepare themselves nor strive to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit—that is, to possess His power.

They do not even know what the Holy Spirit does, whether He exists, or why we need Him. Yet our Christ said, “I shall depart and send another Paraclete.” Indeed, the hymnographer adds the words “like Me.” Another in hypostasis, in person, yet like Me in essence. This is the good news: although there are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—three persons—there is one essence. We say this beautifully, though we do not understand it, when we pray: “Holy God,” speaking of the Father; “Holy Mighty,” speaking of the Son, “through whom all things were made,” and without whom nothing was made; “Holy Immortal,” speaking of the Holy Spirit; and then, “have mercy on us,” not “have mercy on us, all three of You.”

“Have mercy on us.” Though I am speaking of three, why do I not say, “All three of You, have mercy on us”? Because there is one God: three persons, one God. Strange! And who told you it was not strange? It is a Mystery, and a Mystery cannot be subjected to investigation. In John, our Christ mentions a detail that can also be considered here and may help us. We say, for example, that Christ and the Father are one, as He told Philip: “When you see Me, Philip, you see My Father also.” “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” “I and the Father are one.” How are They one? How are They two persons? It is extraordinary.

How does this relationship exist? Christ says that I am to be one with you, while I am one with the Father, and that we are distinct and yet one. “On that day you will know”; do not seek to grasp it today. Yet people interpose their own reasoning. This is precisely why they stumble and reject the Mystery of the Holy Trinity,

which became a serious issue from the earliest years. The First Ecumenical Council had no other purpose than to define dogmatically that Christ is God, together with the teaching concerning the Father and the Holy Spirit, in conjunction with the Second Ecumenical Council. For us, of course, these are Mysteries, and human knowledge cannot penetrate them. Before such matters, man is blind. A blind person carries a white cane so that he may walk safely, neither being led astray nor leading others astray. If, in his pride, he throws it away and says, “I do not need this cane,” he will soon cause an accident and may even send someone else to prison, all because in his pride he discarded the white cane that helped and protected him. So it is with man and faith. When a person casts faith aside and brings forward his own knowledge, saying, “I know these things myself,” and so on,

he will suffer what the blind man suffers when he throws away that white cane called faith. We walk by faith. Can man comprehend the things of God? What has man truly understood, that he should now demand to understand this as well? Does he understand anything that lies close at hand? He knows everything through faith. Even if he has advanced one step, learned a little, or mastered a craft, he learned it through faith. And how many things he believes! If he believed nothing, he would have died. Yet it is the matter of God that he insists on knowing by proof, while he accepts everything else on faith. That is why someone says that the unbeliever is, in fact, the most credulous of all: he believes a thousand lies in order to reject one truth.

Faith is what man lives by, even if he says he does not believe. How did you come here—through certain knowledge or through faith? Through faith. You believed that Panagopoulos had not been run over by a car and that he would come to speak tonight. You believed, and so you came. You did not know that I would be here before you arrived. You came, and here I am. You ate your midday meal. How did you eat it? Why were you not afraid that the lady had put poison in it or that the cooking pot was spoiled? You believed that nothing of the sort had happened, and you ate; otherwise, you would have remained hungry. If you had waited to take the food to a state laboratory for testing before eating it, you would have gone hungry. Nor would you have come here unless you had trusted the trolleybus and its driver, believing that the vehicle was in good order, had been inspected by the authorities, and was safe to board. You believed, and you got on. What have I been saying all this time?

Faith is the one thing you have not lost. You went to school, learned your letters, and now you boast about it. The teacher told you, “This is A.” Why is it called A? Because you believed him. The teacher told you, “This is A,” and then, “This is B.” Why did you believe it, accept it as a given, and go on from there? Then he tells you, “B and A make ba.” Why does it not make ga, teacher? Why is A called A? You believed it. You believed everything. You accept axioms and what others tell you, and so you move forward. Everything is by faith. By faith you board an airplane; by faith you step onto a ship; by faith you get into a car; by faith you drink water. You do not have it tested to see whether someone has put poison in it. By faith you open a bottle of beer—everything is by faith. If someone brings you gold, you put it to the assay; but you do not test all these other things. The devil knows that people do not understand. His cleverness is this: believe everything, but do not believe this one thing.

That is what grieves me. You believe everything, and that is why God will judge us by our own conduct. How can you say, “I cannot believe You”? You have trusted everything else. Just think how readily you accept another person’s opinion, without even knowing who that person is. Yet when it comes to God, you alone insist on examining everything. If you sit down to investigate everything you want to know, you will never take even the first step. And still you believe all the things you were taught—the laws of physics and the rest—which others supposedly examined, though you yourself examined none of them. You take them for granted, become an inventor, call yourself great, reach the stars, and yet you do not know even a fraction of what is happening within you.

If only our eyes were opened! Then we would be ashamed of the way we live—ashamed that we live as we do. Then we would see what is happening around us. Then we would become truly human, because as I am now, I am not truly human. I bear the name and have the outward form, of course, but not in my soul. Great, then, is the feast that comes the day after tomorrow. On His part, God has done, is doing, and will continue to do until the end of the age everything He ordained beforehand and promised through the Son. He remains faithful to humanity and to His promises. He will remain with us always, even to the end of the age. And ten days later the Paraclete, Christ’s divine Spirit, descended and came into the Church. “I will send you another Paraclete,” He says. That means there is another: besides the one, there is another.

Who is the other? I am. Christ is called the Paraclete, and He is the first Paraclete. The Holy Spirit is the second Paraclete. If someone reads the First Catholic Epistle of John, he will find this beautiful counsel: “My little children, I beg you, do not sin.” My children, he says, I beg you not to sin. But if anyone does sin for one reason or another—if Satan got hold of him, if he was not watchful, if others pushed him into it, or if he did not understand—let him not be afraid. We have a Paraclete with the Father, someone who pays our debt: Jesus the Righteous. And He takes upon Himself not only our sins, but the sins of the whole world. We have a Paraclete with the Father. That is why Christ says, “I will send another Paraclete.” And what did we say “Paraclete” means?

Comforter. How does He comfort a person? He forgives his sins, pays his debts, and settles his account before the justice of God. This is what the Holy Spirit does. If people understood the weapon God has placed in their hands—the weapon called metanoia, repentance—they would never be afraid. The psychiatric hospitals would empty, suicides would cease, sleeplessness would disappear, and people would find peace. Today people run to psychiatrists, while psychiatrists deal only with the carnal aspect of the soul and the body.

But the matter is spiritual; it concerns a person’s relationship with the Holy Spirit. Repentance is only a word, yet its power is beyond comprehension—hydrogen and atomic bombs are nothing beside it. When a person makes use of repentance, the sword of God’s justice, which threatens to judge and condemn him, is disarmed in God’s hand and immediately lowered. God, as it were, steps down from His throne. God allows Himself to be conquered by a person’s repentance. As long as a person remains unrepentant, the sword of divine justice remains raised and threatening. I remember that when I was a child, my father would take me to the left-hand door in the church in my village, Agioi Theodoroi.

There was an archangel there with a sword in his hand, and beneath it an inscription. I learned it as a child and used to stammer it out: “Robber, adulterer, thief, brigand, and fornicator, behold and tremble before this sword, for it cuts off the heads of those whose belief is not right.” Thus the justice of the holy God is stayed when people repent, and the grace of the Holy Spirit comes and cleanses everything. The Holy Spirit is like a good housekeeper: He cleanses a person, the person becomes peaceful, and the toxins depart. It is an intoxication of the soul, just as our doctors tell us that many bodily illnesses come from physical toxins. This is exactly the condition in which we find ourselves.

The Holy Spirit detoxifies the human soul. But people do not make use of this because they remain unrepentant. There are people who attend Church yet have not gone to Holy Confession for years. Their sins remain on their account, while the Holy Spirit waits and is not called upon. A person does not understand this and tries in a thousand ways to do good works, think good thoughts, pray, light vigil lamps, visit remote chapels, and light candles by the bundle. My dear man, if you have not confessed, what you owe still remains. Burn all the candles in the world, burn all the oil in the world, visit every remote chapel—not one of your sins is forgiven unless you go, bend your knee, and say, “I did it. I did it.” My beloved, we stand indebted before the justice of God.

When someone owes a debt, he is obliged to go, settle his account, and pay. As long as he still has some sense of shame—and often we have no money to pay the greengrocer, the grocer, the baker, or the fishmonger—we take a different street to avoid them. Christ does not ask a person to come and settle the account by paying. He says, “Come, let us settle the account. Admit that, being human, you fell into debt, and I will forgive it all.” Yet the person will not go. The devil tells him, “Is the priest not a sinner too? And he will repeat what you tell him and make use of it.” But if you contract a venereal disease, what will you do? Will you not go to a doctor and reveal it? Or will you travel secretly to the ends of the earth for treatment so that your name will not be stained? That would not stop you. But Satan deceives us, we find his suggestions pleasing, and that is where the harm is done and where we remain stuck.

The medicines are in the Church. The Paraclete is in the Church: He waters, heals, and drives sickness away. Yet people do not want to understand this. So, as I was saying, the day after tomorrow is a very great feast. We might say it is equal to the feast of Pascha, because the Holy Spirit is equal to the Lord Jesus Christ, of the same divine dignity. That is why our Church has a joyful week afterward. Just as there is Bright Week from Pascha until the Sunday of Thomas, so there is also a bright festal period, as we said, from Pentecost until All Saints. Christ came!

He accomplished His work and departed, and He sent another to continue that work. Christ came and laid the foundation of the Church, and the Holy Spirit came and builds upon the foundation laid by Jesus. Do you remember when we compared the Gospels with the Acts of the Apostles? The Gospels spoke of the Bridegroom, while Acts speaks of the Bride. The Gospels tell what the Bridegroom suffered for His Bride, the Church; Acts tells what the Bride suffered for the sake of the Bridegroom. Strictly speaking, the day after tomorrow is not the birthday of the Church.

Yet the expression is fitting in a certain sense: if by the Church we mean the building raised upon the foundation laid by Jesus, then we may say that Pentecost Sunday is the Church’s birthday. But if we seek the Church at the laying of her foundation, we must go to Great and Holy Saturday, when Christ was in Hades for thirty-three hours. There He laid the foundations; there He gave life to those great stones of faith—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the great prophets, Daniel, Job, and all those beloved ones. He formed the foundation of the Church, to which the one hundred and twenty were added, then three thousand, then five hundred, with more continuing to be added to this very day. And today, this gathering here—and every other upper room where the Word of God is proclaimed—does nothing other than continue the Acts of the Apostles.

That is why I told you that the book of the Acts of the Apostles remains open. It has not ended and has no epilogue, because the works of the Holy Spirit on behalf of the Church are still being added. The Evangelist preserved the account of the descent of the Holy Spirit in the second chapter. There, in his own way, he tells us what took place. In brief, it is as follows. Look at verse one and onward; I am reading from Acts: “When the day of Pentecost had fully come,” when the fiftieth day was completed, “they were all together with one accord in one place.” They were gathered as He had told them, and, of course, for fear of the Jews. “And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind.”

Most of you know this, but I say it for those who have come more recently. It happened suddenly, without warning—like a bolt from a clear sky, as we say. The weather did not change; there was no warning at all. Suddenly a great sound was heard, centered upon one upper room. This was the upper room in which the Mystical Supper had been given—the place which, as I have said before, is today in the hands of the Muslims because of our sins.

What happened next? “And it filled the whole house where they were sitting.” The sound came and filled—that is, completely filled—the upper room. If someone goes back and reads the Books of Kings in the Old Testament, he will find the account of Solomon completing the Temple.

Solomon prayed within the Temple and asked God to bestow His blessing upon it. Do you know what is recorded there? A cloud came and filled the Temple: the grace of God, the grace of the Holy Spirit. The same thing happened here. Within that haze, that mist which enclosed them, something like a tongue of fire came and rested above each person’s head. It had the form of a tongue and was like fire, but it was not fire. That is how it appeared, for no one can know what the Holy Spirit is, because He is God. No one knows His essence. The Lord did, of course, say to the Samaritan woman, “God is Spirit.”

Satan too is a spirit, and the angels are spirits. What, then, is the difference? Do you know what Saint Maximus the Confessor says? God both is and is not—that is, He is beyond everything we mean by being. No one knows what He is. He is Spirit, he says, and yet not spirit in the created sense. No one knows the essence of God. The Lord told the Samaritan woman that God dwells neither on Gerizim nor only on the mountain claimed by those in Jerusalem. But how can He be everywhere present? “God is Spirit”—He said this to make that distinction. Yet no one knows what He is in His essence. Do you understand? In any case, Scripture describes a sound like a rushing wind and here something like fire. Iron may look like fire, but that does not mean it is fire. We can only imagine it in human terms. Shall we say it was like a lemon, an orange, or an eggplant? No. It was like a fiery tongue—that is what Scripture says. “And it rested upon each one of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” And this Holy Spirit bestowed a particular gift.

What gift? “And they began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” A tongue appeared above, and the tongue below began to speak. He did not place it in their mouths; He placed it upon their heads, showing that He rules over all. Whatever they said, they said with full awareness, and they spoke it with the tongue. Sometimes we say of a person, “He has one thing on his tongue, another in his heart, and another in his mind. He thinks one thing, says another, and does another.” Are there people like that? Even if we ourselves are not, there are others. I believe that many times I am the first among them; I have this threefold division within myself. But here He did not place the gift in the mouth; He placed it upon the head, so that the soul’s governing faculty might rule. And to this day, the Holy Spirit is imparted through the laying on of hands upon the head.

At this point I would like to connect this with something said later, because the text repeats three times that the Holy Spirit enabled them to speak in other languages as He willed. What does “as He willed” mean? He willed according to the needs of those listening. Among the Jews who had come, the audience represented eighteen peoples, languages, and dialects. They are listed further on: Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia and Judea, Cappadocians, people from Pontus and Asia, from Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and Libya near Cyrene, Romans, Jews, Cretans, and Arabs. Do you understand? Each heard in his own language and dialect. Thus the Holy Spirit gave each Apostle the speech needed by the audience, so that every listener heard not only his own language but his own dialect, as the text says a little later: “How is it that we hear, each of us in our own dialect in which we were born?” Many people are amazed even today; they attend gatherings, ask us questions, and associate with people who claim that even now they speak in unknown tongues.

There are so-called churches here—groups that have broken away—where people speak in foreign tongues, and Greeks and Orthodox Christians go to hear them. Directly across from us, that building bears the sign “Pentecostal Church.” They claim to have been illumined ever since Pentecost and to speak in foreign tongues. Some are in Kallithea, others in Terpsithea, Kokkinia, Piraeus, Pangrati, and many other places. Children speak foreign tongues, ladies speak foreign tongues, and gentlemen speak foreign tongues. I would like to ask those who go there: Do they speak Greek? No, they say, they speak in foreign tongues. Someone once said to me, “Would you like to hear it, Mr. Panagopoulos?” As it happens, years ago I went to Kokkinia and heard a man speaking in a foreign tongue.

We were sitting together at the table, and he was directly opposite me, about two feet away. The man seemed to become demon-possessed and spoke for half an hour. I do not know what he was saying—and neither did he. He had turned yellow, the way epileptics do. After half an hour, when he had finished pouring out all that gibberish, he stopped. So I looked at him and gestured: “What news? How was your journey? Where have you been?” He just stared at me; he still could not come to himself. After quite some time, he began trying to say something. The other man, who had taken me there so that I might listen and marvel, said to me, “Wait, wait. Have patient endurance; he will recover.” And indeed, after seven or eight minutes, the man came to himself. I said, “I did not hear everything clearly. Could you repeat some of it for me?” He said...

“I spoke,” he told me. I said, “Do you know what you said? I am Greco—I am Greek. You know that, don’t you?” “I know,” he replied. “Then what language were you speaking to me? Did you ask whether I knew another language?” He said, “I told you whatever the Holy Spirit told me.” I replied, “Did the Holy Spirit not know that I am Greek—and, for the present purpose, very much a Greek? Did He not know? And did He make you speak to me in Russian, Turkish, Arabic, or whatever it was? Did the Holy Spirit not know?” He said, “Do you know what is happening now?” “No,” I replied. “This is what is written in the Acts of the Apostles,” he said. “Is this what happened?” I answered. “The Acts of the Apostles says that the Holy Spirit enabled each one to speak in the listeners’ own dialect.”

But you did not speak in my dialect. And they bring us others who supposedly speak in foreign languages, though, by a remarkable coincidence, they are all Greeks. They produce some strange language, when they can hardly speak Greek properly! What does that mean? Does the Holy Spirit mock people?

Does He make you speak Chinese, Indian languages, some Serbian-Turkish mixture, and so forth? Does it take philosophy for these supposedly divinely illumined people to understand this? And yet there are intelligent people today who go and listen to them. They tell you, “Come and hear.” Hear what? They claim that the Holy Spirit makes someone speak in another language, not in his own. But Scripture does not say that a man spoke Greek while his listeners heard it in all the different dialects we have here—Arvanitika, Cretan, Roumeliot, Zakynthian, and so forth. We have dialects, and there are many words in them that we do not understand. One evening, a Cretan friend came to my house and told me, “The lady said that we will arrange the other thing as well.” Then he passed on a message about something—apparently some kind of food—but he said it in her local dialect. To my regret, I had no idea what he meant. Was he speaking about an ox, a lamb, a hare, or a pigeon? I do not know. I said nothing to him. He had given me the message in his own dialect. He understood it—but did I? I did not understand it.

Can these people, then, be so hardened and still call themselves the Church of Pentecost? Do you understand the issue? That is why I am drawing your attention to it. In any case, there was much discussion about this matter and about these people. They began asking, “How is it that each of us hears in our own dialect?” This raises another point, with a teaching of its own. When someone speaks, he must ask God to give him the kind of word that can descend into the understanding of the listener.

In the things of God, what matters is not the head but the heart—not merely who is listening, but the heart of the one who listens. Do you understand? A speaker who lacks the power to speak to a person’s heart and speaks only to his head accomplishes nothing in the Lord. The Apostles came down to the listeners’ level in countless ways. It is easy enough to speak about lofty, beautiful, and noble theological matters. But do the listeners understand them? Can they make them their own? Do they not have minds too? Yet God does not look at their intellects or their diplomas. He looks at their souls, for which He died. God did not die for intellects; God died for souls. Our Fathers say, “The nous, the spiritual intellect, can be bribed by the heart.”

So the word must succeed in forming and healing the heart. Beware of the clever man; beware of the merely learned man. He is lost—he is like a double-edged sword, and nothing can set him right. You must first form his heart, so that he may belong to Christ and become precious, as all the great Fathers did, even those with six or seven diplomas. Yet they would say, “We know nothing except Jesus Christ crucified.” But modern man rejects Jesus crucified and relies on his own reason. “I am educated; I have standing.” Yes, you do. But then you can have no relationship with the Nazarene. Move along; go elsewhere. Here, however, each one heard his own dialect, and no one was left without understanding. For when you speak and the other person cannot understand you, it is as though you took a bundle of hay to a poor, hungry lamb but hung it too high. The lamb can see it but cannot reach it, and it will die of hunger.

These people heard the mighty works of God, rejoiced, and became the first messengers. The Apostles were not the first to carry Christ to the ends of the inhabited world. It was these people at Pentecost, who came from eighteen regions under heaven. They returned to their villages and homelands and spoke of the mighty works of God that they had heard there at Pentecost. Later the Apostles went and found them in their homelands, baptized them, established churches for them, and ordained priests and bishops, and so forth. The first preachers were not the Apostles, but those who had been present at Pentecost—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Cretans. What extraordinary and wondrous things! Do you grasp it? Do you understand? They were the ones who went forth. And it was no accident, but part of the Lord’s wise ordering, that...

He brought about Pentecost precisely when all those people had gathered there, so that they might learn what had happened and carry the message of humanity’s salvation as quickly as possible. Very well. Then some clever people intervened and said that the Apostles were drunk, because they could not understand what was being said. It was like those occasions when someone says, “Give a hundred drachmas to anyone who can translate this into plain language for us.” Then Peter, speaking through the Spirit, took the floor and said, “Gentlemen, dismiss that idea. What time is it? Nine in the morning—the third hour. Are people drunk at nine in the morning?” He refuted them. “Then what is this, Peter?” “Sit down, and I will tell you. You have a prophet of your own named Joel.”

“Yes, he is ours.” Eight hundred years before Christ, the Prophet Joel wrote about what is taking place now. How does he present it, for those of you who do not remember?

“This is what was spoken through the Prophet Joel.” This is no delusion. What has happened now is what the prophet said would happen: “And it shall come to pass in the last days.” Here it is before you now. By what calculation do you conclude that these are the last days? This is where the supposedly illumined people stumble. In the prophecy, “these days” begin with the coming of Christ.

Our last days are the whole period beginning with the coming of Christ and extending onward. Get that firmly into your head, and tell it to those with whom you are in contact—to those supposedly illumined women who claim to speak with the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), who speak of dreams they have seen, and so forth. Let them restrain themselves and repent. Let them find a discerning spiritual father again and make their confession, if they want to be saved. “In the last days,” says the Holy Spirit through Joel, “I will pour out of My Spirit.” There is Joel’s word about the Spirit. You see this and imagine that it refers to some future handful of days? No. This is what Joel foretold, and therefore what Joel foretold has already happened. Will it happen all over again two thousand years later simply because I insist on it? Let me give you an example. Joseph found himself in a difficult position and was minded to put away Mary, who was carrying Christ. He was in a difficult position, was he not?

Thank you. So what happened? God intervened. He sent an angel, and the angel told him, “The situation is very grave, but it is not as you think.” Then what was it? What was happening to him at that very moment, what had taken place, had been written by the Prophet Isaiah: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.” This was it. How was the prophecy fulfilled? It was fulfilled in this event. Joseph took Mary, and so it came to pass. Will this now happen again? Was this prophecy fulfilled or not? It was fulfilled. Will it be fulfilled again? No. Another prophet writes that He will be born in Bethlehem, and so forth. The Magi come asking, “Where is He to be born?” They make inquiries. Where are they directed? Scripture says Bethlehem: “And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,” and so forth.

It happens: they go and find Him. The prophet wrote, “He will be born there,” and they went and found Him. Will it happen again? No. How, then, can you, supposedly illumined person of today, tell me that it will happen again, when Peter says here, “Gentlemen, they are not drunk. Today, what Joel foretold is taking place”? This prophecy is being fulfilled: “And I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh”—upon all people who believe in Me. The Holy Spirit makes no distinction. And remember what He taught Peter in the upper room at Caesarea, when Peter saw the sheet containing the unclean creatures and said, “By no means!” “Be silent,” the Lord told him. “What I have made clean, do not call unclean.” Through this, Peter understood that the Holy Spirit was to go to everyone. “Upon all flesh,” my dear man—provided a person is willing, provided he believes—upon all...

Thank you. “Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; your young men shall see visions, and your elders shall dream dreams. And upon My servants and upon My handmaids, in those days, I will pour out of My Spirit.” That is what it says; that is what is written. You are seeing these things now. We who speak do not speak from ourselves. The Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), the women, or others here who may speak—we do not speak from ourselves. It is the Holy Spirit who is bringing this to pass today. Therefore, we are not drunk. Yet these people seize this prophecy and use it to justify their delusion, claiming that someone is illumined, divinely sent, endowed with spiritual gifts, and so forth.

But the prophecy knocks their argument out. It does not support what they are saying. If you think such things are beneficial, be careful and guard yourselves. I do not want to take anyone’s wallet. If possible, I want to set him on the right path, so that both he and those around him may be saved. For when such people gain followers, those followers may come and claim that we have done nothing, even though the faithful possess spiritual discernment. Now, in the few minutes remaining before I close: next Sunday is a Paschal Sunday, as I told you, a great feast for us. Our Church has set it apart and appointed a special service, known as the Kneeling Vespers. Strictly speaking, this service belongs in the evening, at Vespers. But the Church makes an accommodation: because people do not attend Vespers, she celebrates it in the morning, bringing Vespers forward and joining it to Matins (Orthros). When the morning service ends, the priest begins again with “Blessed is our God,” and we hear the opening Psalm, and so forth. Then, at a certain point, the priest’s invitation calls us to kneel—even those who have little connection with the Church.

On that day they go to church, and some prepare beforehand. Some set aside a piece of paper so that they will not forget to put it beneath their knees in the morning. Others bring a lovely little soft cushion to kneel on. They may be standing somewhere where they cannot hear the prayers clearly. Perhaps the priest reading them is elderly and does not articulate them well. There may be a thousand other reasons why they understand nothing. Nevertheless, they kneel.

There is reverence within the person, and something in him seems to be asking a gift from heaven. But whether he receives from heaven what he asks depends on the purity he has cultivated. Grace, my beloved, allow me to tell you, is a queen. A queen cannot be commanded, swayed, or coerced. Fix this firmly in your nous, your spiritual intellect. From the beginning we say to the Lord, “Let Your mercy be upon us, O Lord, according as we have hoped in You.” We shall receive in proportion to how well we have prepared. Grace requires purity and integrity; it admits no compromise. The grace of the Holy Spirit withdraws, draws back, gathers itself in, folds its wings, and waits for the person to prepare himself. And yet the person kneels before Him. When someone kneels, he should...

be carried in spirit to a scene in the Ark. I have spoken of this before. When the great and unique Flood came upon the earth, after one hundred and fifty days Noah saw that rain was no longer falling and wondered whether the waters had begun to recede. He opened the window and released the raven, Genesis tells us. But when the raven went out, it found the whole surface covered by the waters. There were officers and ordinary people, the educated and all the rest; there were the craftsmen who had built the Ark, and there were animals. Would the raven return inside? It would have been mad to do so, as the saying goes. Then Noah thought of sending out a clean bird, considered purer—the dove. He released the dove, and she began to fly. She grew tired, but where could she rest her feet? The dove will not settle on anything unclean.

“Would the dove settle upon mud and filth?” No. The dove is a type of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit does not settle there. She flew on and on but found no clean place anywhere. So she returned to the Ark, and the Patriarch once again stretched out his hand and took her inside. Christ Himself honored this dove as an image. When He entered the Temple precincts, overturned the tables, and scattered the money of the money changers, He came to those selling doves and said, “Take these things away and leave.” He did not simply release the birds as though they were nothing. He honored the type of the Holy Spirit. Here, then, is a prototype of sacred images, for those who tell us to throw them away. Christ accepted the dove as an image, and here it reveals the truth. These things can open a person’s nous, if he is willing. Let us be spiritually wise. When the priest begins to read, the little dove will begin moving among the kneeling faithful, seeking a clean place where she may...

rest—to comfort, to open the nous, to strengthen, to... to... to... Tell me, where will the little dove rest? Where will it rest? Will it rest upon the mother who has her little child with her, after she has killed her other five children? How could it rest there? Will it rest upon the mother-in-law farther down, who has broken up a married couple and said to her daughter, “Were we fools to have children?”

Η πίστη είναι εκείνο που έχει ο άνθρωπος και αν δεν πιστεύει... Εσείς πώς ήρθατε εδώ, διά γνώσεως ή διά πίστεως; Διά πίστεως. Ότι τον Παναγόπουλο δεν θα τον έχει πατήσει αυτοκίνητο, θα έρθει απόψε να μιλήσει. Πιστέψατε και ήρθατε. Δεν γνωρίζατε ότι ήμουν εδώ και ήρθατε. Ήρθατε, ναι. Φάγατε το μεσημέρι. Πώς το φάγατε; Πώς δεν φοβηθήκατε ότι η κυρία δεν είχε ρίξει το δηλητήριο ή ο τέντζερης δεν ήταν χαλασμένος; Πιστέψατε ότι δεν έγινε αυτό το πράγμα και φάγατε, διαφορετικά θα ήσαστε νηστικοί. Αν περιμένατε να το πάτε στο χημείο του κράτους να το εξετάσετε για να φάτε, θα ήσαστε νηστικοί. Ούτε θα ερχόσαστε αν δεν πιστεύατε στο τρόλεϊ, σε αυτόν που το διευθύνει, ότι το τρόλεϊ είναι τακτοποιημένο, είναι εξετασμένο από την υπηρεσία και είναι ασφαλές να ανέβει. Πίστεψες και ανέβηκες. Τι λέω τόση ώρα;

Ποιος είναι ο άλλος; Εγώ είμαι. Ο Χριστός λέγεται Παράκλητος και είναι ο πρώτος Παράκλητος. Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο είναι δεύτερος Παράκλητος. Εάν διαβάζει κανείς την πρώτη επιστολή του Ιωάννου, την Καθολική, θα βρει εκεί πέρα μια ωραία συνταγή που λέγει: «Τεκνία μου, σας παρακαλώ, μη αμάρτητε». Παιδάκια μου, λέει, σας παρακαλώ μην αμαρτάνετε. Εάν όμως τις αμάρτη, για τον άλφα ή βήτα λόγο, τον έβαλε ο σατανάς στο χέρι, δεν πρόσεξε, τον έσπρωξαν, δεν ήξερε, μη φοβάται. Έχουμε Παράκλητον προς τον Πατέρα, έχουμε κάποιον που τα πληρώνει, Ιησούν τον δίκαιον. Και όχι μόνο τις δικές μας αμαρτίες, αλλά όλου του κόσμου τις αμαρτίες παίρνει επάνω του αυτός. Έχουμε Παράκλητον προς τον Πατέρα. Γι' αυτό ο Χριστός λέει: «Θα στείλω άλλον Παράκλητον». Τι είπαμε, Παράκλητον;

Δεν μίλησες στη διάλεκτο όμως. Και μας φέρνουν και λέω, και οι άλλοι που μιλούν, μιλούν σε ξένες γλώσσες, και καλή στιγμή όλοι είναι Έλληνες. Και φέρνουν μια γλώσσα, και εκείνοι δεν την φέρνουν καλά καλά την ελληνική. Πώς; Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο κοροϊδεύει τον κόσμο;

Δικός μας. Έγραψε αυτός 800 χρόνια π.Χ., ο Προφήτης Ιωήλ, και έχει γράψει ο Προφήτης Ιωήλ γι' αυτό το οποίο λαμβάνει χώρα τώρα. Πώς εκθέτει την περίπτωση, όσοι δεν την ενθυμείστε;

Τελευταίες ημέρες οι δικές μας είναι από την έλευση του Χριστού προς τα πίσω. Πιάνει το κεφαλάκι μέσα, να τα πείτε σε αυτούς που έχω σε επαφή, σε κάτι φωτισμένες που μιλάνε με την Παναγία, που μιλάνε, όνειρα που βλέπουν κλπ. Να κουμπωθούνε και να μετανοήσουν, να πάνε να βρούνε ξανά πνευματικό διακριτικό, να εξομολογηθούν, όταν θέλουν να γλιτώσουν. «Εν ταις εσχάταις ημέραις», λέει το Πνεύμα το Άγιον, λέει αυτό ο Ιωήλ, «εκχεώ από του Πνεύματός μου». Ορίστε το Πνεύμα του Ιωήλ. Το βλέπετε και φαντάζεστε ότι είναι μερικές μέρες; Όχι, είναι αυτό που είπε ο Ιωήλ. Άρα έγινε αυτό που είπε ο Ιωήλ. Θα ξαναγίνει έπειτα από δυο χιλιάδες χρόνια, διότι το θέλω εγώ, εγώ το θέλω εγώ; Εγώ, ένα παράδειγμα, ήρθε ο Ιωσήφ σε δύσκολη κατάσταση να απολύσει τον Χριστό, να απολύσει τη Μαρία. Ήρθε εις δύσκολον κατάσταση, δεν ήρθε;

καθίσει, να παρηγορήσει, να διανοίξει τον νου, να ενδυναμώσει, να, να, να... Θέλετε να μου πείτε πού θα καθίσει; Πού θα καθίσει; Θα καθίσει στη μανούλα που έχει και το παιδί της λίτλα, αφού σαν τ’ άλλα πέντε τα έχει σκοτώσει; Πώς θα καθίσει; Θα καθίσει στην πεθερά παρακάτω, που έχει χωρίσει αντρόγυνο και είπε στη μάνα, στην κόρη: «Εμείς είμαστε κουτές που κάναμε παιδιά»;
