Summary
Christ begins His public ministry by repeating John the Forerunner’s call to repent, believe the Gospel, and enter the approaching Kingdom of Heaven. Christ alone gives spiritual life through His Cross, Baptism, and the Holy Eucharist, in which believers receive His life-giving Body and Blood. The Kingdom is inherited by those who become God’s children in Christ and express that communion through concrete mercy toward the hungry, thirsty, strangers, and suffering.

Today, as you yourselves have noticed, is a day that reminds every person how he must conduct his life if he wishes one day to meet Christ and remain with Him for eternity. This is the first Sunday after the great events: the Nativity of the Lord, the Circumcision of the Lord, and the Baptism of the Lord. Those days showed us our Christ at one day old, eight days old, and thirty years old. Today He is presented to us as He enters His public ministry.
The honorable Forerunner was sent to preach on Christ’s behalf and to prepare a people for Christ. As you know, the honorable Forerunner then departed from the scene, for the reason you know. Now our Christ comes to take the place of the honorable Forerunner. And just as the honorable Forerunner preached, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,” so our Christ afterward used exactly the same words: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” But He added two more words: “And believe in the Gospel.” Isaiah had said, “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.” Who were the people sitting in darkness? The whole world. Before Christ came into the world, it lay in darkness. When Christ came, a great light appeared—to those people personally at that time, and to us today through His Church, His Apostles, and His Gospel. What does light illuminate? The darkness surrounding people. Just as there is visible light and visible darkness outside us, so, unfortunately, there is often a palpable darkness within us as well.
This light can illumine visible darkness, and Christ is the One who can illumine the darkness of the soul. Apart from Christ, apart from this light, a person knows neither where he came from, nor why he came, nor where he is going. He has no clear understanding of his purpose, his worth, or his greatness. Christ is the One who gives meaning to human life, both in this world and in the world to come. Apart from Christ there is no hope, no patient endurance—there is nothing. A person may easily, as the saying goes, blow his brains out in order to find peace, as he claims, without realizing that he will find no peace.
He will remain restless for all eternity. Something struck me—and I do not know whether you noticed it too. Christ seemed almost like a little schoolteacher: He took John’s preaching and repeated the very same words. “Did You have nothing else to tell us, our Lord? You who are the Teacher? You told us exactly what John, Your servant, had already said? John already told us, ‘Repent,’ and so on.” Everyone who comes in My name will speak about this. Have you ever seriously considered this matter of metanoia, of repentance? Why does He call man to repentance both through His Forerunner and in His own person? If you have not considered it, let me take this opportunity to tell you: we are the descendants
of an unrepentant couple named Adam and Eve. That couple did not repent when they sinned. Even though God made it easy for them to repent, they did not. And the consequence, as you know, was that He drove them out of Paradise. We, their descendants, now want to enter Paradise. How will you reach the place from which you were cast out unless you travel the same road in the opposite direction? You were driven out by one way; you must return by the other. You were driven out because of your refusal to repent, and you will return through metanoia, through repentance. The first human beings, the first couple, did not repent. Thank you.
Eve blamed the serpent, Adam blamed Eve, and both of them blamed God; they did not repent. He seized them by the ears, so to speak, and threw them out. The first human beings were not driven out of Paradise only because they sinned, as people say, but because they did not repent. In the same way, we will not be condemned to Hell because, being human, we sin, but because we refuse to repent. This is why Christ preached repentance and later preached it through the Apostles, and why He continues to preach repentance through His Church. If you could attend Vespers and hear one of the secret prayers that the priest reads on behalf of the Church, you would hear it say, among other things, at one point:
“If You take us tonight, if our bed becomes our deathbed, receive us in repentance and confession.” There is no other way. Repentance, my beloved, has such power that it can disarm the right hand of God’s justice. Do you wish to escape God’s justice? Do you wish the sword of Christ’s justice to fall from His hand? Repent. You disarm God. In our simple language we say, “A bowed head is not cut off.” And through David we say, “A broken and humbled heart God will not despise.” Keep this in mind. I do not know how many sins you have committed in your life,
or how many you bear upon yourself at this very moment. God’s justice demands that the sentence be carried out. Yet if a person, during the time God has added to his life, makes use of repentance, that blade falls from God’s hand—the sword of justice, the axe laid at the root of the tree, as John the Forerunner said the other day, if you remember.
Earlier I was speaking in the Church of Saint Barbara, and as I spoke there I remembered something I once saw in a little chapel. On the left side, at the north door where the Archangel is depicted, there was an icon of an Archangel holding such a sword that merely looking at it made your heart tremble. Beneath it were written these words: “Extortioners, adulterers, thieves, robbers, and fornicators, behold and tremble before this sword, for it cuts off the heads of those whose understanding is not upright.” God’s justice awaits you. Unfortunately, we live as though we will never stand face-to-face with God’s justice, which demands satisfaction, because He gave blood and will require blood. And woe to those who do not make use of this merciful Mystery. For neither receiving the Holy Gifts nor Baptism could be more merciful—or even avail us—if the Mystery of repentance and confession did not exist.
Saint Isaac the Syrian calls it a merciful Mystery and “grace after grace.” If this Mystery did not exist, no one would be saved. No human being has ever lived without sinning, whether a little or a great deal. Yet through this Mystery a person disarms the justice of God and enters in.
One more point demands our attention: we must not become confused about the Mystery. The Mystery is not merely repentance, as the Protestants say, nor merely confession, as we and the Roman Catholics say. Most of us do confess, but we do not repent. And if all the confessions we have made had been recorded,
and we played them back and listened, we would discover that they scarcely differed from one another. What we told the priest then, we tell him now. What we said at Christmas, we will say again at Pascha. We simply confess so that we may receive Holy Communion, without repenting. The very next day we do the same things again. A person then remains fallen, when he ought to have risen. He must struggle against his sin and overcome it. We prune our sins; we do not uproot them. And as you know, when you merely cut back weeds or thorns without pulling them up by the roots, they sprout again. This is exactly what happens to many of us. Therefore, because we are descendants of Adam and Eve,
those unrepentant people who were cast out, Christ came into the world and preached repentance to humanity both through His Prophet and in His own person. Repentance is like the military command, “About face!” What happens when you turn about? One moment you are facing east, and the next you find yourself facing west.
A full one hundred and eighty degrees. I acted unjustly; I will cease acting unjustly. I stole; I will cease stealing. I blasphemed; I will bless. I dishonored—and I will turn one hundred and eighty degrees. What utterly idolatrous people! A man worships idols, reveres them, and becomes bound and enslaved to them. Are there no idolaters among us? Unfortunately, there are, and they need this light to illumine their darkness so that they may recognize their errors. What is a man who worships his belly and has abolished fasting, including the fasts of Wednesday and Friday?
He is an idolater. What is a person who worships his flesh, looks constantly in the mirror, and refuses to have children? What is such a person? Is he not an idolater? Has he not made a god of his own flesh? Has he not deified it, becoming indifferent and even committing crimes in order to preserve his figure? Is he not an idolater? What is the lover of money? Is he not an idolater? What are the drunkard, the smoker, and the gambler?
What are the adulterer and the fornicator? Are they not idolaters? What else are they? We are well into the twentieth century; we have landed on the moon, yet we have not come down to earth, my beloved, to understand what is required of us, where we stand, and what awaits us. There is no other way. If you want the road to open so that we may reach the homeland from which we were driven out, we must follow, as I said earlier, precisely the opposite path. Why were you driven out, Adam? Only because I sinned? No. What else? Because I did not repent. Although He waited for me and left me face-to-face with my failure, I accused Him of giving me such a woman. Eve, why were you driven out of Paradise? Why were you separated from God? Why did He, so to speak, throw you out? Only because I sinned?
No, but also because I did not repent. And I accused Him, claiming that He had made the serpent and that it deceived me. So you were driven out because of your sin and because of your refusal to repent. What is the remedy for sin? Sinlessness. And what is the remedy for refusing to repent? Metanoia, repentance. Yet if we do not succeed in remaining sinless, let us at least use this powerful remedy against death called repentance, of which I spoke earlier. Let us make use of this “grace after grace” and of this merciful Mystery, without which no one would be saved. There would be no Saints; there would be no one at all, because only One never sinned: Christ. All of us sin, whether in word, deed, or thought.
And so, my beloved, our Church has appointed this preaching of Jesus for the first Sunday on which Christ enters His public ministry: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and believe in the Gospel.” Do you know what “Gospel” means? Is it this paper the priest holds, this book from which he reads? Is that the Gospel? No! The Gospel is what is proclaimed within it. What does “Gospel” mean? The word is made up of two parts: good tidings, a good message. What is this good message? That the Son of God became the Son of the Virgin. That “God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
That is the Gospel. “And believe in the Gospel”—in the good tidings, that is, in Christ, in Me. The person who does not believe in Christ does not have the key that opens the way back. “I am the way,” Christ says. “I am the life. I am the light.” Not simply “I am a way,” but “the way.” I am the light—not merely a light, but the light, the one and only light. I am the life; apart from Christ there is no life. And this life is imparted to man through Holy Communion, through divine communion. Those of you who received Holy Communion today were united with life; you were united with the light. Without this, a person possesses only the natural life shared by animals, birds, and reptiles. They do not possess spiritual life.
This is why it is called the Chalice of Life. The Holy Chalice is called the Chalice of Life because it imparts the Body and Blood of Christ to the faithful; it gives them a transfusion of blood. Not the blood of a fornicator, an adulterer, a thief, a dishonorable man, or a blasphemer—the blood we put into our veins to preserve our natural life after an operation, an accident, or something similar. It is the Blood of Christ. Therefore it is called life-giving, the Chalice of Life. And the opening in His side is called life-giving because it gave forth life, Baptism, and Holy Communion. His precious Cross is called life-giving because life came forth from there alone. The precious Cross is called life-giving. Christ alone possesses life. Everything else possesses only natural life,
But spiritual life belongs to Christ alone. That is why each person must listen to what Christ says and, whenever he falls, rise again. Little by little he must struggle, like a small child learning to walk upright. And the upright person is not the one who exercises, does calisthenics every morning, and has a strong and vigorous body. No! To be upright means not to lie fallen in sin. We have come here to Church. Are we standing upright, or are we fallen? Someone will say, “We are fallen,” merely out of false humility, without really believing it. Out of false humility he will say, “I am a sinner.” Then why do you not go and put your sins in order? Do you need money? Do you need a lawyer, a notary, official stamps, or witnesses? What do you need? Is He asking you for money? He is asking you for your filth. Why do you not give it to Him?
Are you keeping your sins? Can anyone say, “I am not a sinner”? Have you come and received Holy Communion? Why do you not receive Holy Communion, if you are not a sinner? And if you are a sinner, why do you not put matters right and come to have your sins set in order? If you are not a sinner, again, why do you not come? We are inconsistent, from the sanctuary to the candle stand; we are inconsistent. Yet He waits for us. He grants us more days and asks each person to come and be reconciled with Christ here, so that Christ may give him life. “He who believes in Me, though he may die, shall live,” He says plainly; and, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” Do you want to rise, then, and not simply remain beneath the marble slab? See to it that you enter into communion with Christ, that you commune with Him here, at the saving
Royal Doors, as they are called. For if you do not come to know Christ in this world, in this inn which is His Church, and if you have no relationship with His innkeepers, to whom He has entrusted your healing through the Mysteries of repentance, confession, Baptism, the Holy Eucharist, and the rest; and if you do not receive Holy Communion here for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life... They are called the Royal Doors because through them people enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The Most Holy Theotokos intercedes, and Christ saves. Those who receive Holy Communion are His inheritance. I heard the priest say, “Save Your people, O God, and bless Your inheritance.” What is His inheritance? Those who received Holy Communion, who became brothers and sisters of Christ and heirs to the inheritance of God the Father. If a person is unwilling to be reconciled here, beneath this hand of mercy,
compassion, and mankind’s salvation, then, as I have told you before, one day we shall find ourselves there, before the Master’s throne. And above the Master’s throne, I repeat, there is no oil lamp, because there is judgment, and in judgment there is no mercy. Here there is mercy for man. But if a person refuses to conform himself to what Christ says, one day he will come there, to the judgment, and in judgment there is no mercy. Then woe to that person. Our salvation, therefore, is in our own hands. We are human beings, and we shall fall in word, deed, or thought. Yet we must struggle to rise, and we must beseech Christ to find us at a moment when we are in metanoia and confession and have received the Holy Eucharist—that powerful ticket by which we shall be able to return to Paradise. Christ came and proclaimed
the way and the means by which we may return to the Kingdom of Heaven. This I wish for one another and for everyone.
She is preparing us for the great event of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His Resurrection. For a person is always justifying himself.
He declares himself righteous; he does not accuse himself.
He always believes that he is good; he does not regard others as good, and he always excuses himself. That is why, through His Church, Christ has counseled us throughout all these days leading up to today to pay attention to this, because it does not benefit us. Thus, at the beginning of this great, beautiful, and richly meaningful season, He spoke to us about two men: the Publican and the Pharisee. This is how the Triodion opened. One was justified, and the other was lost. He did the same last Sunday. Once again He spoke to us about two persons: the younger brother, the Prodigal Son, and the Prodigal’s elder brother.
One was saved, and the other was lost. Strangely enough, those who were lost were the two who considered themselves good and were also considered good by others. The Pharisee said, “I am not a thief; I am not dishonorable; I am not unjust; I am not an adulterer; I am not like this Publican. I fast twice a week; I tithe everything I possess; I am a merciful man.” And God told him, “Go outside. You are of no use to Me. Such people do not please Me.” The same thing happened last Sunday, when He again presented two men. The younger one, the Prodigal Son, truly sinned, but he repented.
He returned, confessed, and said, “I have sinned.” The father received him, the fatted calf was slain, and there was joy in Heaven, because there truly is joy in Heaven over one sinner who repents. From this we learn that simply being a good person does not save anyone. Let me take this opportunity to tell you: Hell is full of people who were considered good—very good people. But there are no Christians in Hell. I do not mean that a Christian is not a good person. I mean that someone who calls himself good, and whom others also call good, may not be a Christian at all. The elder brother likewise said, “I never transgressed your commandment.”
He became bitter when the younger son returned. He had no love within him, no heart of compassion, and he did not think as the father thought. And so we see two strange outcomes where we would never have expected them. We would have given the Pharisee a tip, and we would have congratulated the elder brother. Yet God took both of them by the ear and cast them outside: “You are of no use to Me.” Consequently, there is another way by which a person is saved. My beloved, there is no salvation by oneself, no salvation by works, and no salvation by the world. What is there, then? Salvation through Christ—salvation through Christ. Christ saves. If salvation worked otherwise, an angel would have appeared on high, sounded a trumpet, and said, “Gentlemen, perform good works and come, so that I may admit you into Paradise.”
God did not do that. He Himself came, became man, shed His blood, and left that blood in the Church. Today He gives it to people to make them alive. You know the bird called the pelican. Do you know what the pelican does? When it returns to its nest and sees that its young have been bitten by a snake, it turns its beak against its own side, wounds itself, and gives its blood to its young, bringing them back to life. That is why, among the things chanted about Christ on Great Friday, we also hear this image: the Word (Logos) of God, whose side was wounded and brought forth blood and water,
to give drink to His own little birds, whom the devil bites daily through sin and poisons. Good works alone, then, are not the way a person is saved; otherwise, all the rich would perform good works and enter the Kingdom of Heaven. No, that is not the way. There is another way, and today Christ tells us what it is, though most people did not come to hear it.
Those who did hear it did not pay attention. After telling those two great parables, each of which completes the other, today He says, “Now I can judge you. I have told you what will happen, and now I sit in judgment over you.” You heard Him, did you not? Today He sat and told a parable. A time will come, He says, when the Son of Man will come to judge the world and will divide mankind into two great groups: the sheep and the goats. To the first He will say, “Come,” and to the others, “Depart.” The question is: in which group will you be? He will come one day, whether soon or late; He will come. This alone remains, for everything else has happened. This alone remains—the event of which we speak in the Creed: “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” For when He comes, there will be both the living and the dead. The dead will rise, while the others, the faithful Christians who are alive, will be caught up into the air, as Paul says, and the judgment will take place. This is what ought to concern every person. It is the final event in the whole divine economy of the Incarnation. When Christ rose in Galilee—forgive me—when He ascended in Galilee and departed before the eyes of the disciples, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the others,
angels came, and because they stood there staring with eyes and mouths wide open, the angels said to them, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven?” Why are you staring? Why are your mouths hanging open? “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come.” The second “so” means “in the same manner”; it is an adverb. “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come”—He will come again—“in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” Just as you see Him ascending with the cloud, so He will return one day. This is what the Creed says: “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” There is nothing else after this.
“And His Kingdom shall have no end.” That completes everything. Only one thing remains. There is still one link missing from this entire chain. And I say to myself: if we accept that there are a thousand prophecies about Christ’s coming, Christ’s work, and His teaching in general, and nine hundred and ninety-nine of them have been fulfilled, will the one remaining prophecy not be fulfilled? Will He lie about this one? What reason would He have to tell us, “When the Son of Man comes in His glory with His angels, He will sit upon His throne” to judge, and so forth? Why would He tell us this merely to deceive us? He has no reason to deceive us; He has no reason to take our money.
He wants to save us. He loves us. He gave His blood. We do not give our blood, but He gave His—and He did so at a time when there was not a single sinless human being. So this is what He said today: “When one day I divide mankind into two groups, I will say to the first, ‘Come, you blessed.’” What are we blessed ones to do? You who are blessed are to come and inherit. Inherit what? The Kingdom of God. When was this Kingdom prepared? “The Kingdom prepared for you.” For you, prepared for you. From when? “From the foundation of the world.” So He will call them to inherit. Pay attention to the words He uses.
Did I put those words there? You did not put them there either. They were spoken by the One who knows what He is saying. Many people say, “Everyone does good; if only you knew what I do in secret.” Then why are you telling us what you do? Will you enter Paradise? Are you related to God, my child? Who receives an inheritance—friends, acquaintances, or workers? Who inherits? Relatives inherit. Are you related to God? The Kingdom belongs to God. Are you related to God? If you are, show the documents proving your claim and come receive the inheritance. Enter the Kingdom. But if you are not related to God, then whatever you have done, however many good works you have to your credit, you will find no place for them there.
So Christ, who died, was buried, and rose again, proclaims today that the Kingdom of God is something you inherit—you inherit it. Many people focus on what He says afterward: “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in,” and so forth. When you have a plate of food left over and it is beginning to turn sour, then you give it away: “Give it away so we do not have to throw it out.”
You have a pair of shoes left over that no longer fit. Will not the junk dealer take them? “Give them away for the sake of your father’s soul, your mother’s soul, and your own.” None of that is enough. The Kingdom of Heaven is inherited, and a person must take seriously the need to become an heir. How does someone become an heir? Suppose a man dies in America and leaves an estate of one hundred thousand dollars. What do they publish in the newspapers? That the heirs of such-and-such a person are being sought.
When people here hear about it, the brothers appear, the cousins appear, the nephews appear. They produce their papers, go over there, and collect the dollars. This is what Christ is saying: if you belong to His family, to His household, you will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. If you do not belong to His household, you have no share in the Kingdom of Heaven. It could not be clearer!
A child is his father’s heir; a brother is an heir; close relatives are heirs. Therefore, we must become heirs. The Father is the One who possesses the inheritance. Someone may say, then, “Since God is our Father and He possesses the inheritance, we are His children.” But are we His children? Well, of course—are human beings not children of God?
Here is another answer: no. Human beings are not children of God. Theologians, bishops, Patriarchs, and professors are speaking falsely when they say that all human beings are children of God. Does that mean human beings are children of the ape? No, I am not saying that either. Human beings are God’s creatures; they are His creation. Only those who have received Jesus are children of God. Paul says this plainly in Galatians, in the epistle reading for Christmas night. Why was Christ born? “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, so that we might receive adoption as sons”—so that
we might once again become children of God, that we might become sons of God. This is why Christ came into the world. And John says, in chapter one, verse twelve: “But as many as received Him”—Christ—“to them He gave the right to become children of God.” If you have not received Christ, if you have treated His Church, His priests, His Mysteries, and all the rest with contempt,
then you are not a brother of Christ and, consequently, you are not a child of God. To be a child of God and have a right to the inheritance, you must be a brother of Christ. “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren.” Christ has younger brothers and sisters: the Christians. The others are not Christ’s brethren. Is someone who blasphemes Christ, rejects Christ, blasphemes His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, tears everything down, rejects the Mysteries and the Church, does not repent, does not confess, and does not receive Holy Communion—is such a person Christ’s brother? Then who would be a brother of the devil? Would other Christians be the devil’s brothers instead? It is not so, my dear people. Pay attention to the words He uses. You must listen carefully. We do not know whether we shall still be here next year to hear these things again and take notice of them. A person, therefore, must be a brother of Christ and, consequently, a child of God. God has one natural Son: Christ.
He is the co-heir of the Kingdom of Heaven, yet He comes down
to share His Father’s Kingdom and His glory with the others who will believe in Him. It is therefore absolutely necessary for anyone who wishes to be saved to understand the role Christ has fulfilled in the world, what His Gospel does here and teaches, and what His Churches and His priests do, even though those priests are sinners. Those who have no relationship with Christ are not children of God and have no right to the Kingdom of Heaven. Those who received Him, accepted Him, were baptized in His name, confess their sins and receive His forgiveness, and partake of the Immaculate Mysteries—His Body and Blood—are the ones entitled to the Kingdom of Heaven. All the others will be shut outside.
And there is something more about the Kingdom. If I am to inherit a kingdom, must I not be a prince? Must I not be a royal child in order to inherit a kingdom? How can I, an ordinary person, gain and inherit a kingdom if I am not a prince? A person must become a prince, a royal child, because he is going to inherit a kingdom. How does a person become a royal child? Through Holy Communion. Unless a person changes the Adamic blood flowing in his veins—all four, five, six, or seven kilos of it—and makes it the Blood of Christ through Holy Communion, but instead goes once a year at Christmas, or perhaps once every fifty years, he should know in advance that he is heading for torment. You must change your blood.
You may be a common man, but you will become new—you will be made new and become a royal child. This is why every person must receive Holy Communion. There is no other way, my dear people, for us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Within the sanctuary is Paradise. You see one door there on the left and another over there, with two Archangels holding swords in their hands. “You may not enter from here; you must pass through here. You may not enter from there; you must pass through here.” “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” Here you will approach; here Christ will be offered to you for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. After the people have received Holy Communion, the priest will extend his hand, holding the Holy Chalice, and say, “Save, O God, Your people and bless Your inheritance.” Who are His inheritance?
Those who have received Holy Communion. Pay attention to this. What will the priest say after Holy Communion? “Save, O God, Your people and bless Your inheritance.” These are the people who have become one with Christ, who have become Christ’s brothers and sisters and, consequently, children of God. And why will they receive the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy? “The blessing of the Lord and His mercy.” Take a small blessing, a figure of the womb of the Theotokos; come to your senses, and return to pass through here. There is no other way. This is the point. God desires good works. God desires love for our fellow human beings, and especially love guided by discernment. Do not give these things to your mistress, with whom you eat and sin, if she is living as a prostitute or adulteress, or whatever the case may be. Give them to the Lord’s brethren, to people who pray,
to devout people who are Christ’s brothers and sisters. He says that if you give to them, you have given to Me. “I will repay you for these things,” He says. God desires such deeds. But when? When, at the same time, you possess the documents proving that you are members of God’s family. I do not want you to be My child and yet have no love for others. I want you to be My child and to have secured your title to inherit the Kingdom, but you must also be generous. Within your means, help the person in pain. If possible, loosen the noose around the unfortunate person who is burdened by some financial difficulty or family problem. I want you to show love for others, but first I want to see your title—whether you have a relationship with Me—because this inheritance, which My Father has possessed from the foundation of the world,
is for those who belong to His household. Would you like me to give you one more little illustration? Pay attention. A person’s good works—the things we boast of doing and accomplishing—are like an exceedingly luxurious apartment, a penthouse with every convenience. You enter in winter and it is like a steam bath; you think you are in California. You enter in summer and think you are in the Alps: it has air conditioning and every comfort. There is money inside, safes, and every good thing that makes life comfortable. This luxurious upper apartment, this penthouse, is yours. These are a person’s works. But when you go to enter, you have no key to the building, so you cannot go up to the penthouse, and you remain outside. Christ is the key by which you enter and go up to the penthouse.
But you do not have the key. You lost it, neglected it, or left it somewhere, so you will remain outside. This is who Christ is. Christ is a person’s ticket, and that person’s works are his luggage. Suppose I have a hundred suitcases filled with every kind of gold ornament, pearls, and precious stones. Can I travel? If I have a ticket, I will travel. If I have no ticket, all my suitcases will not enable me to travel. The Publican had no suitcases, while the Pharisee had suitcases—good works. The Publican was justified, and the other remained outside. The younger brother, the Prodigal Son, had no suitcases and no good works. He had sinned.
But he repented, returned, said, “I have sinned,” and confessed. The fatted calf was slaughtered; his filth was taken away, and the first robe and all the rest transformed him. He entered, Heaven rejoiced, and he himself shared in that joy. The other brother, despite everything he possessed, remained outside. The thief on Christ’s right had no suitcases and no works. Yet he seized Heaven because he believed at a moment when no one expected it. That is the point. People with a ticket traveled; those with luggage but no ticket did not. So pay attention to the Church of Christ, the Cross of Christ, the Mysteries of Christ, and especially Holy Communion. Unless God illumines the bishops to give instructions for the Chalice to be uncovered and for the people to receive Holy Communion, society will become
a far worse jungle. We will not be able to go outside; people will devour one another. The only way for human nature to change, for a human being to become truly human and fit for the Kingdom of Heaven, is Holy Communion. Make every effort to stop sinning and change your life, so that you may establish the conditions necessary for receiving Holy Communion. Today the Church begins the period of abstinence from meat. We bid farewell to meat; Meatfare is over. This is Cheesefare Week. Everything except meat is permitted: fish, eggs, butter, cheese, and milk, though not on Wednesday and Friday. The following week we enter the season of fasting, a strict fast. Those who are ill or have health-related reasons
should consult their spiritual father about what they may eat. They must not decide on their own; they will give an account to God. The sixty-ninth Canon of the Holy Apostles imposes excommunication and forbids this. A clergyman is deposed and excommunicated if he breaks the fast without a valid reason. Pay attention to this as well. It belongs to the teaching of this day, and from this position I am obliged to tell you, so that you may take the necessary measures. Unless we return to where the Church is calling us, know that the results will be dreadful. Before long, when the sirens begin to sound, we will cry, “Most Holy Theotokos, help us,” and the Most Holy Theotokos will not listen. Better for the fire brigade not to hear us, better for the emergency services not to hear us, better for all the doctors in the world not to hear us, than for God not to hear us. And God will not hear us, because today we do not listen to Him.
The command is hearing in return for hearing: listen to Me, and I will listen to you. Therefore, if we wish to escape Christ’s severe judgment upon this world, not be deprived of the world to come, and not lose this present world either, metanoia—repentance—costs nothing; neither does Holy Communion or confession. We are human beings: we fell, so let us rise. We fell again, so let us rise again. We fell yet again, so let us rise yet again. To fall is human; to persist in the Fall is satanic. Do not remain on the ground. Rise, then, repent, confess, and return to the Church, and God will be merciful. This I pray for all of us and for everyone. Amen.

Εκατόν ογδόντα μοίρες. Αδικούσα, θα παύσω να αδικώ. Έκλεπτα, θα παύσω να κλέβω. Βλασφημούσα, θα ευλογώ. Ατίμασα, θα Εκατόν ογδόντα μοίρες Τι πανεπίδωλο λάτρεις! Προσκυνάει τα είδωλα, να σέβεται τα είδωλα και να είναι δεσμευμένος και υποχρεωμένος από τα είδωλα. Μεταξύ μας δεν υπάρχουν ειδωλολάτρες; Δυστυχώς υπάρχουν και έχουν ανάγκη αυτού του φωτός για να διαφωτιστεί το σκότος τους, για να καταλάβουν τα λάθη τους. Τι είναι ο άνθρωπος ο οποίος λατρεύει την κοιλιά του και κατήργησε τις νηστείες και κατήργησε την Τετάρτη και την Παρασκευή;
Είναι ειδωλολάτρης. Τι είναι ο άνθρωπος που λατρεύει τη σάρκα του και κοιτάζει στον καθρέφτη και δεν κάνει παιδιά; Τι είναι ο άνθρωπος αυτός; Δεν είναι ειδωλολάτρης; Δεν έχει θεοποιήσει τη σάρκα του; Δεν την έχει θεοποιήσει και αδιαφορεί και κάνει εγκλήματα για να διατηρήσει τη γραμμή; Δεν είναι ειδωλολάτρης; Τι είναι ο φιλάργυρος; Δεν είναι ειδωλολάτρης; Τι είναι ο μέθυσος, τι είναι ο καπνιστής, τι είναι ο χαρτοπαίκτης;
πνευματική όμως την έχει μόνο ο Χριστός. Γι' αυτό είναι ανάγκη ο άνθρωπος να ακούσει τι λέγει ο Χριστός και στην πτώση του να σηκώνεται. Θα παλέψει σιγά σιγά, σαν το μικρό παιδί, να μάθει να περπατάει όρθιος. Και όρθιος δεν είναι εκείνος ο οποίος κάνει γυμναστική, κάνει σουηδική κάθε πρωί κλπ. και έχει σώμα και έχει ρώμη και έχει αυτά. Όχι! Όρθιος, να μην είναι πεσμένος στην αμαρτία. Στην εκκλησία ήλθαμε εδώ. Είμαστε όρθιοι ή εν πτώσει; Θα πει κανείς: «Είμεθα εν πτώσει». Από ταπεινολογία, δεν το πιστεύει. Από ταπεινολογία θα πει: «Είμαι αμαρτωλός». Γιατί δεν πας να τακτοποιήσεις τις αμαρτίες σου; Σου χρειάζονται χρήματα; Σου χρειάζεται δικηγόρος, συμβολαιογράφος, ένσημα, μάρτυρες; Τι σου χρειάζεται; Σου ζητάει λεφτά; Βρωμιά σου ζητάει. Γιατί δεν τις δίνεις;
Παιδί είναι κληρονόμος του πατέρα, ο αδελφός είναι κληρονόμος, οι συγγενείς, οι στενοί είναι κληρονόμοι. Κατά συνέπεια πρέπει να γίνουμε κληρονόμοι. Αυτός που έχει την περιουσία είναι ο πατέρας. Θα πει κανείς τότε: εφόσον είναι ο Θεός ο Πατέρας μας, που έχει την κληρονομία, εμείς είμαστε παιδιά του. Είμαστε παιδιά του; Ε, βέβαια, οι άνθρωποι δεν είναι παιδιά του Θεού;
Θα είσαι κοινός άνθρωπος, θα είσαι καινός με άλφα γιώτα, θα γίνεις καινούργιος, θα γίνεις πριγκιπόπουλο. Γι' αυτό ο κάθε άνθρωπος πρέπει να κοινωνεί. Δεν υπάρχει άλλος τρόπος, αγαπητοί μου, να περάσουμε για τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Μέσα το ιερόν είναι ο Παράδεισος. Μια πόρτα από εκεί βλέπετε, η αριστερά, και η άλλη από εκεί, έχει δύο Αρχαγγέλους με δυο σπαθιά στο χέρι. Από εδώ απαγορεύεται, λέει, εδώ θα περάσεις. Από εδώ απαγορεύεται, εδώ θα περάσεις. «Ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, Σῶτερ, σῶσον ἡμᾶς». Εδώ θα προσέλθεις, εδώ θα σου προσφερθεί ο Χριστός εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν την αιώνιον. Και όταν κοινωνήσει, θα βγάλει το χέρι του κρατώντας το Άγιο Ποτήριο ο ιερεύς και θα πει: «Σῶσον, ὁ Θεός, τὸν λαόν σου καὶ εὐλόγησον τὴν κληρονομίαν σου». Ποια είναι η κληρονομία του;
