Summary

The lecture presents Christmas through Christ’s Nativity, the visit of the Magi, and the Flight into Egypt, emphasizing that Luke supplies details often overlooked in worship. Luke’s description of Mary as Joseph’s betrothed confirms the Orthodox teaching that their relationship was not a consummated marriage and that she remained ever-virgin. The Nativity ultimately challenges believers to move beyond decorations and outward Christian works by opening their hearts as the true dwelling place where Christ may be born.

By the grace of God, we now stand before the great days of Christendom—specifically, the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His Circumcision, His Baptism, Theophany, and so forth. With your kind permission, today I would like to say something that might prepare us in a more positive way for these holy days. As Orthodox Christians, whether only on paper or also in practice,

we celebrate Christmas. Yet in our Church, Christmas is presented under three aspects. The first is the Nativity of Christ, the second is the visit of the Magi from the East, and the third is the flight of our Lord into Egypt. Most of us, being occupied with work and other concerns, follow only the latter two events. When we go to church on Christmas Day, we do not hear the account of Christ’s birth itself, but the events that followed it. For, as you know, we hear: “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, behold, Magi from the East...” and so forth. Yes, but how exactly was He born? How, where, and why? That too is important. The Church certainly tells us this as well, but not on Christmas Day. She tells us before Christmas, when most of us do not attend church, whether because of work or because, through negligence, we happen not to go. That is precisely why our knowledge of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus is so limited. These events are presented to us by our Church...

through the Evangelist Matthew. He tells us about the genealogy of our Christ, which we shall hear next Sunday, the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ. He also tells us about the coming of the Magi, Christ’s flight into Egypt, and His return, to put it briefly. The Evangelist Luke then completes the account by telling us about the birth itself. As I said, this passage is read on the eve of Christmas, and the faithful do not know it, do not pay attention to it, and are unfamiliar with the details. They know in broad terms that He was born in Bethlehem. But why He was born in Bethlehem, how He came to be born there, and what else took place there remain, in a sense, hidden from most people.

So today, since you have given me the opportunity, I would like to say something from the Evangelist Luke about the birth of Jesus. The Apostle and Evangelist Luke has preserved these events for us in the second chapter, from verse one onward. First he speaks about the two Annunciations and about the birth of the Precious Forerunner, who preceded Christ by six months both in the Annunciation and in birth. Then he comes to the birth of our Christ, and specifically to the fact that He was born in Bethlehem. “It came to pass,” he says, “in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.” This census...

“took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.” Those who study these matters already know this; it is simply a reminder, especially for those who do not study them. Luke says here that this census—or rather, the decree ordering the census—was issued under Caesar Augustus. “Caesar” is a Roman word meaning “emperor.” Concerning this Caesar Augustus, let me say a few words from what I found about him. He is said to have been the nephew of Julius Caesar, whom he succeeded. He was also called Octavian, meaning “venerable.”

Later, the name “Octavian” was replaced by “Augustus,” which likewise means “venerable,” on account of his greatness; that is, he was a person of great importance. This title, it is said, was bestowed upon him by the Senate.

Then, in his honor, the sixth month was named August after him. For us August is the eighth month, but at that time they counted the months from March, not from January. Likewise, the preceding month was named July in honor of his uncle, Julius Caesar. For those who enjoy studying such matters, I also found that Augustus was born on September 23, in the year 691 from the founding of Rome. Thank you.

That was sixty-three years before Christ. He died on August 19, in the year 767 from the founding of Rome, or in the year fourteen after Christ, at about seventy-six years of age. He was proclaimed emperor in nineteen before Christ, and it was then that he sought information about the population and ordered the census. That, briefly, is for those who want to know more about this man. “And all went to be registered, each to his own city”—that is, to the place where he had been born, just as we go to vote

in our birthplace if we have not transferred our voting rights. And when a census is to be taken, as happened recently, we go to the place where we were born. “Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.” Amid all the people moving from one place to another, one couple also set out. The one was called Joseph and the other Mary, and they too came to the house of David, in Bethlehem.

I do not know whether God has counted you worthy to visit that region. Galilee is very far from Judea. More specifically, if we consider the distance from Nazareth to Bethlehem, we must reckon about 145 kilometers from Nazareth to Jerusalem and another twelve kilometers from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Now that roads have been built, the distances have, in a sense, become shorter. At that time the journey may have been ten or fifteen kilometers longer. Think, then, how far these people walked.

One hundred and sixty to one hundred and seventy kilometers. There were no swift means of transport in those days, no motorcars. There may have been carts. The most practical means of travel at the time was perhaps a donkey, a camel, or simply going on foot. Along the roads from Jerusalem toward Jericho and Nazareth, the remains of inns can still be seen today.

Indeed, on the road toward Samaria there is one such inn where, according to tradition, Joseph and our Most Holy Theotokos spent a night. In their condition, especially with the days of the birth so near,

they could not possibly have hurried on foot. I imagine that it took them about four days at the very least, or five to six days at the most, to travel from Galilee to Bethlehem. But why did they come to Bethlehem? The Evangelist tells us briefly: “because he”—Joseph—“was of the house and lineage of David.” Joseph, he says, belonged to the house and lineage of David. Have you ever given any thought to this? Have you ever traced David’s roots and asked where David came from? In the Katavasiae, which are wholly doctrinal, our Church says the following in the Fourth Ode:

“O Christ, a rod from the root of Jesse and a flower from it, You blossomed forth from the Virgin. From the mountain overshadowed by the forest, O Praised One, You came, made flesh from her who knew no man, You who are immaterial and God. Glory to Your power, O Lord.” It is all doctrine, all substance, all Orthodoxy. If we turn to the Old Testament, to First Kings, chapter sixteen, from verse one onward—or, for those who have the Bible Society edition, because unfortunately some people listen even to that version of Scripture—you will find it in First Samuel,

again in chapter sixteen, from verse one onward. There we read that God once commanded Samuel to go and anoint a king in place of Saul. Saul, it seems, was not acceptable to God because of the way he lived. So the prophet filled his horn with oil. A horn is a type, or symbol, of power. It is the horn of those animals whose strength lies there—oxen, rams, and others. The horn is hollow inside toward its base, and people used it as a vessel. Samuel placed in it the oil with which he would anoint the man as king. Kings were anointed, and this was a Mystery.

A king is anointed. And the king was a person representing God, even if he were opposed to Christ and opposed to God, because he was a christ, an anointed one. Paul himself taught us this. On one occasion, when he spoke without knowing that the man before him was the high priest, he acknowledged that this man was a christ of God, one set apart for God. Every christ of God is regarded as set apart and as a person of great importance, regardless of who he may be. This is also why Paul commanded that prayers be offered for kings, for those in authority, and so forth, even though none of those kings was baptized or a believer, “that we may lead a quiet life.” This too is something we Orthodox Christians today must know: we must respect those who are anointed by God.

As you see, today we do not respect them. In our present circumstances, of course, these are our clergy. We have no kings, but we do have our clergy. Yet none of us sees in the person of the clergyman the anointing, the priesthood, and God. We look instead at the individual person, and by focusing on the person we go on, in effect, to blot out God. Very well. What does Jesus Christ tell Samuel? He is to go. To put it simply and briefly, Samuel arose and went to Bethlehem. There he went to Jesse’s house and told him why he had come. Jesse had eight sons, but God had not told Samuel which of the eight he was to anoint as king. “There I will tell you,” God said to him. Samuel informed Jesse that a king would arise from his household. Naturally, relying on his own intelligence and judgment, Jesse presented to Samuel, one by one, the sons whom he thought suited to that office. Thank you.

But God did not direct Samuel to anoint any of them. Meanwhile, seeing Samuel’s bewilderment—“What is happening here? Am I to anoint this one or that one?”—God forestalled him and said: “Take care, for you human beings look at outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” So put aside impressive bearing, put aside education, put all such things aside. What matters is the heart, so that we may speak with Him and He may speak with us. The seven sons who were in the house passed before Samuel, but grace gave no command that any of them be anointed king. Samuel asked, “Is there another son?” Jesse said, “No”—then added,

“There is another one; yes, there is one more.” “Well, where is he?” Jesse had already judged from the outset that this son could not possibly become king. He was a shepherd. Jesse’s reasoning was: “I can understand him tending goats; I can understand him tending lambs. But tending people—that I cannot understand.” Yet God had just told Samuel: “I do not judge as you judge, by outward appearances, but according to what is within.” “Where is the other son?” Samuel asked. “The other one is a shepherd,” Jesse replied. “Whatever he may be, bring him here. We will not sit down at the table until he comes and the task for which I was sent has been completed.” With a heavy heart, Jesse sent word to the fields of Bethlehem, where David was tending the sheep, telling him to come down to the house. And then envy began to stir among the other brothers...

They said, “Is that country bumpkin going to come from out there and take the kingdom away from us?” How could they have imagined that he was God’s chosen one? Before long, David arrived. You can understand—just picture how he must have looked when he came. Perhaps he wore his little shepherd’s cloak, perhaps he held his staff in his hand, with rough peasant sandals on his feet, his ankles bare, and perhaps a piece of cornbread in his bag, and so forth. As the grace of the Holy Spirit has preserved for us, he was fair-haired and had beautiful eyes—fair-haired, perhaps, with the eyes of faith shining brightly. Then Samuel was immediately instructed by grace: “This is the one you shall anoint as king.” And he anointed him king before all his brothers and before the astonished elder Jesse. He anointed this shepherd as king. In any case, Jesse, then, is the father of David.

The day after tomorrow, when the genealogy is read, you will hear the line traced as far as David, and then David’s descendants, and so on. And now Christ is addressed in the words of the prophets: “Son of David, have mercy on me! Son of David, have mercy on me!” Everyone presents Him as the Son of David. Why? Because both our Most Holy Theotokos and Joseph, even though there was no marital union between them, belonged to this royal house of David. In other words, even according to His humanity, our Christ was of royal birth. He was not merely descended from a royal line; both in His divinity and in His humanity He was royal, and they traced their ancestry to that house. So when this decree is issued, He returns, as it were, to His ancestral home, because He is a descendant of David.

The law!

This is how our Church presents Him. You should know that David comes from the tribe of Judah. The day after tomorrow, in the genealogy, we shall hear: “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.” Not Reuben, nor Simeon, nor Levi, nor Issachar, nor Zebulun. It says Judah. It passes over all the others and seeks out Judah, because it was from the tribe of Judah that God was to borrow His flesh. And the prophecy was so clear that the wise men from the East who came—and we shall hear this when we go to church on Christmas night—asked precisely this. They came to Judea and asked, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”

And they came from the pagan world. Those events have another aspect as well. Why did the Magi come from the East? And why, as we have seen here, was David from Bethlehem? Where did he come from? We find that his ancestry goes back to Judah. Judah is the root, David is the trunk, the Theotokos (God-bearer) is a branch growing from that trunk, Christ is the blossom upon the branch, and the fruit is our salvation. If God ever counts you worthy to reach Mount Sinai, where so many prefigurations of the Most Holy Theotokos are found, there is a small chapel there. I have photographed it and made slides of it. Inside that little chapel is the Bush—forgive me.

The Bush is there, and inside that little chapel of the Bush, almost an entire wall is covered with an iconographic composition. Jesse lies at the bottom, and from his loins grows a tree that spreads into branches. And whom will you see there? Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, David—all those who spring from the root of Jesse. That is the point of departure; that is where the story begins, and that is why they came to Bethlehem. This couple were descendants of David, and David was from Bethlehem, specifically from the family of Jesse the Bethlehemite. Therefore, because Joseph was of the house and lineage of David, we need to follow—or at least to know—what I am telling you now.

Let us continue. They went, it says, to be registered “with Mary, his betrothed wife.” Those of you who study the text should pay attention to what Luke says here. Luke, being Greek and naturally knowing the Greek language, expressed it correctly, unlike Matthew, where some confusion can arise: “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife.” The Gospel according to Matthew was translated from Aramaic, and the expression “your wife” is partly a Hebraism.

Joseph saw her when she was three months pregnant. But if she was his wife in the usual sense, how is it that now, when she is about to give birth, she is still his betrothed? The words “his wife” do not mean what immediately comes to our minds—marital relations and “the will of the flesh and the will of man,” as John says. No. Luke tells us that she is about to give birth and is still his betrothed: “his betrothed wife, who was with child.” The relationship between Joseph and Mary never became a consummated marriage. It never became a marriage in the human sense, as we blasphemously claim. This brings to mind a feast concerning their marriage that Roman Catholicism has instituted. I do not know whether you are aware of it, but the Roman Catholic Church has a feast of the marriage of the Most Holy Theotokos to Joseph, one of its many little-known feasts.

The Roman Catholic Church invented this feast of the marriage of the Most Holy Theotokos to Joseph, which is celebrated, I believe, on January 23 or 24. If you are interested, I can look it up. “And it came to pass, while they were there, that the days were fulfilled for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn Son, wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the lodging place.” While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to her firstborn Son, wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the lodging place. Now, concerning the word “firstborn.”

The Protestants and the rest of the heterodox world disagree with the Orthodox, who believe that the term “firstborn” does not presuppose children born afterward—a second or a third child, for example, with the firstborn being merely the eldest among many siblings. Here “firstborn” means the only-born: the first to open the womb, the only-begotten. Other parallel passages from Holy Scripture demonstrate that this is exactly as we Orthodox believe. Allow me to share a few observations on this matter.

Here “firstborn” does not mean the first child followed by others, but the only child. For if “firstborn” does not mean the first and only child here, but the first followed by others, then let us ask them to show us who the Lord’s brothers are who were born of the Virgin and share the same essence and nature as He. For if “firstborn” means the first among other children born afterward, then those later children would necessarily have to share the same essence and nature as the first, whom they follow. But what relationship does Holy Scripture establish between Jesus the God-Man and

those called the Lord’s brothers, whom even they do not claim were born of the Virgin? Therefore, if they suppose that the Virgin bore other children by Joseph, Scripture should not call Jesus the Firstborn, because there is no such relationship between Jesus and those supposed sons of the Virgin whom they have invented in their imagination. For the one is begotten of God the Father, while the others would have to be begotten of Joseph. What is the difference? It is the father who begets; the woman does not beget. The man begets, while the woman gives birth. Abraham begot Isaac; Sarah did not beget him. Isaac begot Jacob; Rebecca did not beget him. Jacob begot... Did Rachel beget Jacob? How does the passage put it?

Jacob—Jacob begot Judah and his brothers; Rachel did not beget them. Consequently, this interpretation is not correct. In this case, the word “firstborn” primarily denies any previous birth: she had never given birth before. This was her first child, and the Son was therefore the Firstborn. Yet the term is also used of an only child, an only-begotten child. We find proof of this in Holy Scripture. Although Scripture assures us that the Son and Word (Logos) of God is only-begotten—“He gave His only-begotten Son,” as it is written in John 3:16—nevertheless, even though it calls Him the only-begotten Son, it also says: “But when God again brings the Firstborn Son”

“into the world, let all the angels of God worship Him.” Hebrews 1:6. He will bring the Firstborn Son into the world. Who, then, is God’s second-born son, if the word has the meaning they give it? What are we to conclude—that there is also a second-born Son of God simply because Scripture calls Him the Firstborn, merely because certain people insist upon it? Here “firstborn,” by excluding every previous birth, is equivalent to “only-born” and “only-begotten.” Just as Jesus, in His eternal and beginningless begetting, is called the Firstborn in Hebrews 1:6 yet is the only-begotten Son of the Father in John 3:16, so also in His birth within time, although He is called the Firstborn of the Virgin,

He is the only-begotten Son of His immaculate Virgin Mother. Elsewhere in Holy Scripture we also find “only” expressed by the word “first”—that is, the only-born described as the firstborn, and the only one described as the first. Listen: Adam, for example, the only man formed directly from the earth, is called the first-formed by Holy Scripture. See Wisdom of Solomon 7:1 and Wisdom of Solomon 10:1. Yet there was no second-formed or third-formed man fashioned directly from the earth in the same way. He is called the first-formed, though there is no second-formed man. According to the interpretation of these supposed teachers of the Gospel, if there is a first, there must also be a second. But there is no such second.

In the forty-first chapter of Isaiah—you will have read this passage in connection with the Jehovah’s Witnesses—what does verse 6 say? “Thus says God, the King of Israel, and God Sabaoth, who has delivered him: I am the first, and I am after all things; besides Me there is no God.” He says, “I am the first; I am the last.” Then who are those in between? He alone is all in all. It is therefore perfectly clear that the word “first” is used here in the sense of “only.” Thus, the Firstborn does not necessarily have a second-born after Him. Nor should we stumble over the expressions used in Scripture. And to show that a first need not have a second, hear Paul say: “Reject a heretical man after a first and second admonition.”

That is not how the Gospel phrases it. After saying “after one,” it should have said “after two,” or else “after a first and a second.” Instead, it says, “after one and a second.” This is a Hebraism, and we should not stumble over it, since the Church has already pronounced upon the matter. Therefore, just as the first-formed Adam has no second-formed man fashioned in the same way; just as God, who is the First, has no second god; just as Paul’s phrase “after one” is not followed by “after two,” and “a second” is not preceded by “a first”; so the Firstborn of God has no second-born, and the Firstborn of Mary likewise has no second-born. Such, more or less, is the reasoning. Saint Basil the Great also offers a beautiful observation somewhere: “The firstborn is not necessarily called such by comparison with children born afterward”—as though he were first in relation to others—“but the one who first opens the womb is called firstborn.” In a few words, he gives us the definition.

That settles the matter. She therefore gave birth to Him, whatever others may say or loudly insist. She bore Him and laid Him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the lodging place. That is why He was born and found in a manger. There was no room in the lodging place; none could be found. Joseph searched, but found nothing. He asked, but no one offered them shelter. Naturally, in his anxiety he must have appealed to the people there, to the innkeepers and to others. Did none of the women see that this young maiden needed help, with her belly reaching down to her knees, as we say in everyday speech? Yet not one of them offered even a corridor.

They offered no bed, nothing at all. Why was the world so hard? This is the reason: Satan attacks the people of God. This couple—this apparent couple—belonged to God. Satan had no claim over them, and so he put them through fire and iron. He hardened the hearts of the people under his power. At that time, he held them all in his hands and used them to take revenge on this couple, though of course he did not know what this young maiden carried in her womb. Satan did not know. And so, in this instance, God is persecuted even before He is born. Even before His birth, He already has His people, as the angel said: “He will save”

“His people.” Why, before He is even born, He already has a people! He is no ordinary person, no empty figure; He has a people even before His birth. “He will save His people from their sins,” I say. He was persecuted even before He was born. As John says so beautifully, “He came to His own”—He came to what was His, to the things He Himself had made. “Without Him nothing was made that was made,” yet no one gave Him a place. Will we give Christ a place in which to be born today? Is Christ born in the Nativity scenes we make, in the Christmas decorations on our windows, and in all our other displays? Or is He born in the decorations of our rooms, by which we try to prove that we are Christians? Christ is born in human hearts. Will our hearts give Him a place today? Will they make room for Christ to be born, or will Christ remain unborn in the lives of so many people?

I am sorry to put it this way, but the God who is present everywhere is, in practice, absent almost everywhere. You know, out of a thousand people, perhaps scarcely five truly know anything of Christ. It makes no difference what they call themselves, what they claim, what they think, or how proudly they say they are Christians. The question is whether they truly are—whether Christ Himself signs His name beneath them and says, “This one is Mine; his heart belongs to Me.” He asked for that heart in the Old Testament: “My son, give Me your heart.” Many will appear with Christian works, yet without Christ. They will do many such things, as though trying to place Christ under obligation. Yet they do not allow Christ to be born in their hearts. And Christ is not present in a person merely in proportion to how much that person knows about Christ.

Many people think that because they know many things from the Gospel and about the Mysteries, they are Christians. But you must know whether Christ is within you. How can I tell? Ask a pregnant woman, and she will tell you. Say to her, “Do you know that you are pregnant?” She will say, “Of course I do.” “How do you know? I tell you that you are not.” “Can I not feel the child leaping within me? The child is coming forth from within me—what are you talking about? Are you joking? Do you think I am mad?” Does Christ leap within your heart? Do you have this joy? Do you feel this assurance, this blessedness? Do you have a foretaste of it here and now? Go into supposedly Christian homes these days, homes whose outward works seem more than Christian, yet whose members act like actual demons. In such homes Christ is not born. Is there room in the lodging for Christ today?

The age has reached its fullness, with so much knowledge, so many miracles, and so many other teachings proving that God truly exists. Yet no room was found. God made Himself the least. God made Himself the least. And so, just as then, so now, Christ unfortunately is not born in people’s hearts. Human hearts are still like those of irrational animals, and this depends upon us. He made Himself the least; and little by little, asking and being turned away, asking and being turned away, He reached the outskirts of Bethlehem. Even today, if someone goes a little higher, he will see that the cave where our Christ was born still lies almost at the edge of Bethlehem. Of course, the city has now expanded and is no longer a small town.

Today it is a large city with many thousands of inhabitants, yet the cave still appears to be on its outskirts. After suffering so much, and without knowing, of course, what would happen that night, he arrived there, and there Christ was born. Now let us go there in our minds. How the Lady, His mother, wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, how she cared for Him that night, and how she endured it all, I cannot say. I wish to say only this: God came to earth, and no one knew Him—neither officials nor ordinary people, neither those of the Church nor those of the state. No one. Not even His mother or the man accompanying her yet knew or fully understood who He was, what this was all about, whom they were serving, or what had come into the world at that moment. She tore a piece from her garment and cared for Him as best she could.

She laid Him there somewhere on the straw, in a manger, through the cold night. What can I tell you? It was December. I do not know exactly how it was. In any case, I know one thing: He was born there without anyone knowing Him. Yet at the very moment He was born, an act was set in motion from the great royal court of Heaven. Many generations earlier, in that very place, David—the man from whose line Christ, born today, took flesh—had tended his sheep. He had been called from there to become king and, without realizing it, to serve the divine plan of the Incarnation. Now, in that same place, somewhere out in the fields, other men were tending their own sheep; and there this herald arrived

to say, “Once, from this place, we took someone for a certain role. Now we tell you that the purpose for which we took him has been fulfilled.” And this is what happened: “There were shepherds in that same country, living out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.” So, while these shepherds—the successors of that first great shepherd, David—were there, an angel of the Lord came to tell them certain things. Glory, that is, a radiant light, shone around them, and naturally they were terrified. But the angel immediately said, “Do not be afraid.”

“For behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be for all the people.” This is not only for you, but for the whole world. What is this joy, O angel? “For unto you is born this day a Savior.” A Savior. Not merely a tall man, not a communist or a socialist, as some people say, nor merely an intelligent man. A Savior has been born. And if we join this with Matthew’s words, “He shall save His people from their sins,” we can understand what “Savior” means. Lord: “who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.” He was born today; He was born tonight.

Would you like to go and see Him? Take care: you will not be able to find Him on your own. If you wish to go, I must help you. “And this shall be the sign unto you.” Perhaps other children have also been born in the city. Which one is He? If, for example, we looked at the registry office in Athens, theoretically we might find eighty to one hundred and twenty births in a single day. Let us say that five children were born in Bethlehem. I am not saying ten, fifteen, or twenty—just five. Which one is He? And perhaps two or three were boys. Which one is He? So the angel gives them a sign. Pay attention, he says, pay attention: “You shall find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” This is the second time we hear the words “in a manger.” You will not find Him in a house.

You will find Him in a manger. You will indeed find Him there. That is the strange thing. And this strange thing is the event I am proclaiming to you at this moment. Then suddenly, while the angel was speaking to the shepherds, “there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,” those words: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.” “And it came to pass, when the angels had gone away from them into Heaven,” that the shepherds spoke to one another. The angels sang, delivered the message, proclaimed in song the reconciliation of earth with Heaven, and departed. Now the shepherds looked at one another. “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing,” this event, “which the Lord

has made known to us.” I do not know how you would behave at such a moment. By our reasoning, they should perhaps have been a little more cautious. “Should we not stop and think about this? What do you say? Was it from the good one or from the evil one? Should we not wait for God to bring the daylight, so that we can hear some news or learn something more?” They did none of the things that would be considered reasonable. What did they do? “And they came with haste”—that is, they left everything and went. They hurried into Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in a manger. For the third time: “in a manger.”

“And when they had seen Him, they understood the saying that had been told them concerning this Child.” The information they had received corresponded with what had happened, and they understood that this was He. You see, the people of God are those who are pure in heart. They are not simply those who make icons, light candles, and so forth. God forbid that we should reject such things; but above all, those who have a pure heart and also do these things receive direct assurance that this message is from the Lord and not from the evil one. They understand it at once. They do not need, after seeing a dream or a vision, to run to a dream interpreter or to some elderly woman in the neighborhood who interprets dreams and visions, asking for her opinion. Thank you.

An angel goes and says, “Arise, take the mother of the Child and the Child, and flee into Egypt.” Do this, and so forth. He gathers everything and leaves, without asking questions, without demanding signs or miracles. He receives the message directly and acts upon it. There are not many hearts pure enough to have this direct contact with Christ and to act as they did: they hastened. There is another moral lesson here. Why, good shepherds, are you out here at night? First, we are guarding our sheep so that no one steals them. Second, so that wild animals do not devour them. And third, so that they may graze at night. Where are you going now? Are you not leaving your entire livelihood behind? Why not wait until dawn and then go one at a time? Let one stay behind to guard the flock while another goes. But they left it all, abandoned it, and went. This is what Christ does. He makes people mad

by human standards. Just as He once made the Samaritan woman seem mad. She even left her water jar behind. Will you not take some water home for your good-for-nothing husband to drink, to mix the chickens’ feed, and to water your birds? Instead, you go out into the public square and tell others to come and see the One who told you your whole life. She even left her water jar. So do not be surprised if someone leaves a little job unfinished, closes the shop, and goes to Church, to Vespers, to Matins, and so forth. Do not be surprised. You are surprised when someone gives. For today, the one who gives is considered mad, while the one who hoards is considered clever, even if he often acquires things unlawfully. “He who does not gather with Me scatters,” as Christ says. This is a great thing. They abandoned everything and hastened. They went and were counted worthy; and here the Evangelist adds something more.

He is a painter: he writes the events and paints them before our eyes. He says, “And all who heard it”—apparently the night was cold and there were others inside that cave. The couple went there, but it seems that others were also present—“and all who heard it marveled at the things told them by the shepherds.” They marveled at what the shepherds related. “But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.” What is this Child whom I have borne? Where will all this lead? What is the work I am doing? She gathered all these things within herself, kept silent, and marveled at what was happening. Then the passage concludes: “And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.” For all that they had heard and

seen. Yet we, supposedly, want to alter this way of things. “Unless I see, I will not believe.” Yes, but here it says that he heard and saw.

How did he hear? Did he labor to discover it? No. He took care to keep his heart pure; and when God saw him, He gave him inner assurance, announced this to him, and revealed things that wise and prudent men had longed and desired to see but did not see. Yet they were seen by rough countrymen, mountain folk, uneducated men—men who possessed nothing but a pure heart. And what lesson do we draw from this? Christ is not discovered; He is revealed. Read as much as you like, struggle until you collapse. Unless you cleanse your heart, you will learn nothing about Christ. You will know only the things that...

Jewish tour guides also say when they guide foreigners through Jerusalem. They do not take them inside the Church of the Resurrection; they lead them only as far as the door and say, “It is also said that the tomb of the Christians’ God is in here.” That is how our own worldly educated people will speak as well, because knowledge and learning make people clever; God makes them good. The point is not merely for a person to be clever, but to be good—and without Christ no one is truly good. Perhaps someone here enjoys debating and will ask: “Then is God only with the poor in spirit, with those who do not know, those who are uneducated?

Is that why God concerns Himself with them?” Read Matthew and speak with the Magi from the East—the astrologers, observers, philosophers, men of universal learning, each holding four degrees, or at least three—then you can speak with them. Christ makes use of everyone and receives everyone. He wants the philosopher, and He wants the simple person as well.

των λεγομένων αδελφών του Κυρίου, τους οποίους ούτε υποθέτουν ότι εγέννησε η Παρθένος; Ώστε, εάν υποθέσουν ότι η Παρθένος έτεκε και άλλα τέκνα μετά του Ιωσήφ, δεν πρέπει να ονομάζει η Γραφή τον Ιησούν Πρωτότοκον, καθότι ουδεμία σχέση υπάρχει μεταξύ του Ιησού και των διά της φαντασίας αυτών πλασθέντων δήθεν υιών της Παρθένου. Διότι ο μεν ένας είναι από τον Θεό Πατέρα, ο άλλος πρέπει να είναι από τον Ιωσήφ. Ποια διαφορά; Γέννησε έναν ο πατέρας, πρέπει να είναι, γιατί δεν γεννάει η γυναίκα. Γεννάει ο άντρας, ο ανήρ γεννά, η γυναίκα τίκτει. Αβραάμ γέννησε Ισαάκ, δεν εγέννησε η Σάρα. Ισαάκ γέννησε Ιακώβ, δεν εγέννησε η Ρεβέκκα. Ιακώβ εγέννησε... Ραχήλ γέννησε τον Ιακώβ; Πώς λέει εκεί πέρα;

«τον λαόν αυτού». Βρε, πριν γεννηθεί έχει και λαό. Δεν είναι από τους κοινούς, είναι από τους κενούς αυτός, και έχει και λαό πριν γεννηθεί. «Θέλει σώσει τον λαόν αυτού εκ των αμαρτιών αυτού», λέω. Αυτός εδιώχτηκε πριν γεννηθεί ακόμη. Όπως λέγει ωραιότατα ο Ιωάννης, «εις τα ίδια ήλθε», λέει, στα δικά του ήλθε, σ' αυτά που έφτιαξε αυτός. «Εκτός αυτού δεν έγινε τίποτα ο γέγονε», και κανείς δεν του έδωσε μέρος. Σήμερα θα του δώσουμε άραγε μέρος να γεννηθεί ο Χριστός; Πού γεννάται ο Χριστός; Στις φάτνες που φτιάχνουμε και οι εορτές των Χριστουγέννων στα τζάμια και λοιπά τα δικά μας; Ή στον διάκοσμο των δωματίων μας, για να αποδείξουμε ότι είμαστε χριστιανοί; Ο Χριστός γεννάται στις καρδίες των ανθρώπων. Θα δώσουν οι καρδιές σήμερα, θα δώσουν μέρος να γεννηθεί ο Χριστός; Ή δεν θα γεννηθεί ο Χριστός σε πολύ κόσμο;
