Summary

As Christ approaches Jerusalem, He prepares the Twelve for His betrayal, condemnation, suffering, death, and resurrection so that His Crucifixion will not destroy their faith. His death at the chosen hour and His resurrection on the third day demonstrate His divine authority and confirm that the Scriptures testify about Him. Approaching Holy Week and Pascha requires repentance, confession, fasting, gratitude, and obedience rather than merely observing customs while continuing to crucify Christ through unrepented sin.

Continuing the talks we have been giving here, this evening we should speak about the events of the Fifth Sunday of the Fast. The Fifth Sunday remains, then Palm Sunday, and afterward we enter what is called Holy Week.

As we also heard the day before yesterday, our Christ prepares His disciples for what they are about to witness, so that they will not stumble in their faith. For it is not easy for anyone to accept

that his teacher should be slaughtered and crucified. It is something terribly hard to bear. These men regarded Him as a great man; some, of course, also regarded Him as God, but they could not yet make this clear within themselves. So it was natural that they would stumble when they saw Him being crucified. I do not know whether you remember, but our Christ made another such effort to help them, so that they would not stumble. As you may recall, He revealed the Transfiguration to them. At the Transfiguration, He showed them something of His divinity.

They were able to see, as though He had opened the veil and said, “I am also God; I am not only man.” And our Church puts it beautifully: “So that when they see You crucified, they may understand that Your Passion is voluntary, and may proclaim to the world that You are truly the radiance of the Father.” They had seen Him working miracles, opening tombs and restoring the departed as though they were alive, casting out demons, walking upon the sea, rebuking the unclean spirits, and saying to the sea, “Peace, be still.” And then they would see certain men arrest Him and raise Him upon the Cross.

They would lose all confidence. So, to keep them from being taken completely by surprise, He prepares and directs them. The same is true for us: when we know that we must face something serious, we can summon courage. If the doctors tell us, “Be prepared: with your loved one’s illness, we cannot promise anything, though we will do our best,” what do you immediately do? You brace yourself for something painful, and you face it differently because you have been prepared in some measure, instead of having it strike you without warning. This is exactly what Christ is doing now: He is seeking to prepare them gently,

to make them ready to accept what is going to happen and to understand that it had to happen in this way, whether they grasped it or not. That is why the Evangelist records here what Jesus said to His disciples. They were, he says, “on the road, going up to Jerusalem.” You know, Jerusalem stands upon a hill. It is about 830 meters above sea level. When we go there in summer, we sleep under a quilt. So they were going up to Jerusalem.

As they were going up to Jerusalem, “Jesus was walking ahead of them” on the road. He went before them almost joyfully. He was not gloomy or troubled, even though He knew what was going to happen to Him. It was as though He were going to a feast, although He knew what awaited Him. The disciples were astonished, and as they followed, they were also afraid. Why such joy? Why such eagerness? Why such good cheer? They imagined in their own way that this would end badly for them, and so they both marveled and were afraid.

In any case, He took the Twelve aside—apparently others were also present—and “began to tell them the things that were going to happen to Him.” Not what would happen to you, but what would happen to Me. “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem.” As you see, we are going to Jerusalem. And He is the Son of Man. He is not called a son of men, because Christ was not conceived from the seed of a man; He is not from a man and a woman, but from a woman alone. The rest is from the Holy Spirit. That is why He is called the Son of Man. We are called sons of men: I am the son of Athanasios and Asimo; you are the son of John and Helen, or whatever your parents’ names may be. According to His humanity, He has a mother but no father. According to His divinity, He has a Father but no mother.

That is why He is called fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. In the Old Testament there was also a person who served as a type of Him and was described in the same way: fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. This was Melchizedek, whom the Apostle Paul mentions in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Writing to his fellow Hebrews, he tells them that the One he is presenting to them has come according to the order of Melchizedek. Melchizedek enters the account of Holy Scripture without any mention of who begot him. He simply appears in the days of Abraham. Nor does Scripture later say that he died, as it does with everyone else, telling us when they appeared, from whom they descended, and when they died. About him, it says nothing. So it is also with Christ:

according to His humanity, He appears without a father, for He was not conceived from the seed of a man; according to His divinity, He is without a mother, for He has a Father but no mother. And “who shall declare His generation?” He is eternal—so from where did He come, and to where did He depart? This is why, as I said, He is precisely according to the order of Melchizedek, and why He is also called the Son of Man. He does not say, “I,” but rather, “The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes.” He will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, “and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles.” The Romans, who were the occupying power, were Gentiles; they were not Jews. He would be handed over to them and afterward, as you know, crucified. Someone might ask:

Very well, if He knew it and prophesied that this and that would happen, why did He go? Why did He not avoid it? This is what people neither know nor appreciate about our Christ. Our Christ was not crucified only because the Jews wanted it. He was crucified because He Himself willed to be crucified for mankind. They acted without understanding and worked wickedly, yet in doing so they merely served the plan of God. He could have escaped, as He had done many times before, but He did not. That is why we say, “As the Lord comes to His voluntary Passion.” It was willed; it was voluntary. I have a personal experience connected with what I am telling you.

An uncle of mine, now departed, was a great atheist. He used to say to me, “Why did He not escape from the Cross? Why did He not escape, if He was God? The Jews caught Him, outwitted Him, and crucified Him. Could He not escape?” So I said, “How did He escape on another occasion, when they tried to throw Him from the cliff and He passed through their midst? How did He escape then?” “Where does it say that?” he asked. I opened the Gospel and showed him. Many people believe that Christ could do nothing else, that the Jews cornered Him and crucified Him. No, that is not how it was. Out of love for mankind, Christ Himself was crucified and died. We must fix this firmly in our minds.

We should recognize how deeply indebted we are to Him. If people studied carefully, they would see that when Christ died upon the Cross, He died at the hour He Himself willed, and He died voluntarily. The soldiers broke the legs of the other two. They went and shattered their legs so that they would die an hour sooner and could be buried before sunset, when the Jewish Passover began on Friday evening. But when they came to Jesus, they found Him already dead. Nicodemus and the other man, Joseph, went and asked Pilate to give them the body. Pilate, however, would not release it. “He cannot be dead,” he said. “It is impossible.” They told him He was dead, though not enough hours had passed for Him to die. So Pilate summoned the centurion, the officer in charge, and the centurion told him, “He is dead.” When Pilate heard that He had indeed died, he gave them permission to take Him. And, as you will hear, a Roman soldier from the guard came and, although Jesus was already dead, thrust a spear here into His right side, and “blood and water came out.” This is a sign of death, when the serum separates from the blood. According to medical science, it shows that He had died. Indeed, this was first discovered

by Simpson, the inventor of chloroform: when the serum separates from a person’s blood, that person has already died. Christ died sooner than the other two. This is something a person should know when approaching Pascha, and perhaps next Thursday, God willing, we shall speak about it. But I mention it in passing because of the words I used: “voluntary Passion,” a Passion freely willed. He willed to come, and He willed to sacrifice Himself out of love for mankind, yet people blaspheme Him. The moment came when, as the Evangelist John tells us, Christ “bowed His head and gave up His spirit,” after first saying, “It is finished.”

You died, O Lord, in the opposite way from us human beings. How do we human beings die? You give up the spirit, the shutters close, and then you bow your head. But Christ says, as it were, “I bow My head, and then I give up My spirit.” What does this mean? That He died at the hour He Himself willed. Why did He die sooner than would naturally have been expected? Because if He had allowed Himself to die slowly, sunset would have overtaken them, and they would have had to break His legs as they did those of the others, so that they would die, be buried and removed, and the Jews could go and eat their Passover. But then He would not have been clearly identified as the One foretold, because the sacred texts go on to say:

This happened because Holy Scripture said, “Not one of His bones shall be broken,” and, “They shall look upon Him whom they pierced.” In the Old Testament there was a lamb that was eaten at the Jewish Passover, and the command was that they were not to break the lamb’s legs. They were to eat the flesh and leave the skeleton intact. For in the same way, about sixteen hundred years later, the bones of that Lamb would not be broken, and He would be left whole. Thus He ascended the Cross voluntarily and died voluntarily for mankind, at the hour He Himself willed. Having prefigured everything in the Old Testament, He later fulfilled it all, so that He could be unmistakably identified and people could recognize Him.

I do not know how you hold these matters within yourselves. Outside Jesus there is no salvation. Christ is the One who holds the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven and who makes possible mankind’s return to Paradise. From this, together with what I have told you, we understand that He is saying: “Take courage. We are going up, and the Son of Man will face all these things.” How much you will endure, how steadfast you will remain, and how much you will understand is not the point. The point is that you should know, as I have told you, that I knew where I was going, and that I went voluntarily, out of love for mankind—and especially for you who have accompanied Me. This is what He shows us here.

So people do not understand the hymn of our Church, “As the Lord comes to His voluntary Passion.” They believe Christ was crucified only because the Jews were evil. But that was not the only reason; there was also Christ’s love. Through His almighty power as God, Christ preserved Himself until the hour when everything had been accomplished and all the prophecies and symbols had been fulfilled. Thus He Himself became the precise fulfillment of the prophecies and, as I said, could be unmistakably identified. For this, we owe Him not merely one word of thanks, but endless thanks and gratitude—gratitude that, sadly, is absent. So He will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, “and they will condemn Him”; they will sentence Him.

“They will mock Him, scourge Him, spit upon Him, and kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” On the third day—not after three complete days, as some count from Friday to Sunday and then object that these are three days. That is false reasoning. He says, “On the third day He will rise,” and elsewhere, “On the third day I shall be raised.” The first day is Friday, the second is Saturday, and the third is Sunday. The Jews counted from sunset to sunset, from six o’clock to six o’clock, as we would say. During the night they had watches, or shifts. When did He die? What was the first day on which He lay dead?

Friday afternoon. At six o’clock, Friday gave way to the next day. Until six o’clock on Saturday evening was the second day. On what day, then, did Christ rise? On the third day, as Sunday was beginning. When the Myrrh-bearing Women went very early in the morning, they found that He had risen. “On the third day,” He says, “He will rise.” This is why the Scriptures had foretold that He would rise. And what does our Creed say? Does it not say, “And He rose again according to the Scriptures”? This is why Christ said of the Scriptures, “These are they which testify of Me.” The Scriptures, He says, speak about Me. But who reads Holy Scripture? What does modern man not read? What does he not devour with his eyes?

As for Holy Scripture, Satan forbids a person even to take it into his hands; and if he does take it up, it seems so pointless to him, its contents so pale and insipid, though in truth it is everything. For even if a man learns everything else, if he does not learn this, it would have been better for him not to have been born. There was no reason for him to come into this world, pile a few bricks one upon another, and consider that an achievement. That is not man's purpose. Man comes to earth in order to die, and he dies in order to live. He comes to earth and remains here as a tenant, not as a permanent resident—a tenant. And whenever the Master wills, He serves him notice to leave. These things must become matters of faith for a person.

And once these things become matters of faith for him, once he has absorbed and understood them, he will immediately change his whole way of life. That will benefit him both in this world and in the next, which he cannot avoid. As you can see, death is something no one can escape. Even God, who became man, died. Even the Mother who gave birth to God died. It is a debt we owe, and we shall certainly pay it, whether we want to or not, whether unwillingly or willingly. Here, then, Christ tells them what is going to happen. And has He not also told us what is going to happen? We can see only as far as death, only as far as the grave. No one sees what takes place beyond the marble slab. But He has told us what awaits us too, and where we must place the center of our concern: on the soul or on the body? He says it must be on the soul, because the body depends upon the soul. The body is simply the carriage.

But the soul is the driver. The body is merely the vehicle, while the rider, the one who guides it, is the soul. Without the soul, the body cannot continue to exist. The soul can exist on its own; the body cannot. Yet man—I do not know what to say—it is as though someone has cast an evil eye upon him: he insists on giving all his attention to the body. So much effort is spent on the body. He cares for it, feeds it, keeps it warm, washes it, treats its illnesses, and runs here and there, even abroad, all for the body, in order to prolong this temporary life. Yet he does nothing, or almost nothing, for the spirit, for the soul. In one of his homilies, Basil the Great says, ‘The soul and the body are partners. They are two partners working together.’

He says, ‘O man, you are unjust, because you do not take care to divide your labor and concern fairly. You care so much for the body, while giving no care at the same time to the soul. You are unwilling to give the better partner—the soul—what it deserves, even ninety-five percent. At least give them equal shares; divide your care down the middle.’ But people do not divide it. All their concern is for the body, as though the spirit played no part at all in human existence. And so, when one day, whether we wish it or not, this partnership is dissolved—whether violently or by natural causes—

we shall see that our judgment was mistaken, but then it will be too late. Even our children, as you have surely seen, are cared for like precious objects, like ornaments, rather than as immortal beings. We do not invest in the child's soul or watch over it. We take the child's temperature to see whether there is even a slight fever. We keep a scale to measure every gram of weight. But if he curses his father, makes obscene gestures, insults people, obeys no one, and smashes things, we say, ‘He will stop all that when he grows up.’ When he grows up, he will cast you and me aside. What else will he do? This happens because we do not see an immortal soul. What mother has her child fast during these days? Tell me, what mother has her child fast? She takes such care of the child's body—and rightly so; I have no objection to that. But where will his immortal soul go?

If the doctor says, ‘For ten days you must give him only rice water,’ she will do it. But when Christ says it, she will not. How can this be? Of course, I am not speaking about a child who is weak or unable to fast; in such a case, take care of the child accordingly. But people pay no attention to the soul. Why? Because they cannot appreciate what the child truly is. He is not an ornament. He is a person, with a soul within him, and from an early age he is being formed and learning. That is why some people do train their children in this way; yet if we see someone doing so, we who stand outside and consider ourselves clever think he is mad. And yet that is not how matters stand. If a person does not learn from childhood, and if he does not believe in the existence of God and in the almighty power of God, he cannot advance. Have you ever read Daniel? See what happened when Nebuchadnezzar told them to eat from the royal table, and they refused.

When they asked the official in charge to give them legumes instead, he said, ‘I cannot give you that, because tomorrow the king will see that you are weak and pale. He will think I am stealing your allotted food, and he will have my head.’ They replied, ‘Test us for ten days.’

So he gave them legumes and water. They drank none of the beverages from the royal table and ate none of its food. After ten days, when the king came to examine them, he saw that these three youths were more handsome, healthier, and ten times more intelligent than the other pampered children. That is how it is. Let me offer an example from my own life, though I do not wish to draw attention to myself. I have this son whom Saint Nektarios of Aegina gave us after seventeen years without children.

He is fourteen years old and in his second year of secondary school. He fasts throughout Great Lent without oil, except on Saturdays and Sundays. He became ill on Monday after having been sick since Saturday, and by the following Monday his fever had gone down—without milk or anything else.

He gains two, three, even four kilograms during the fast. These are verified facts, not tales from former times or fairy stories. But no one has put it to the test to discover what God means and what the power of God means. People look at things only in natural terms. Yet Christianity is not merely natural; it is supernatural. It is not irrational; it is beyond reason. It is not irrational; it is beyond reason. But people have not tried it. ‘Taste and see.’ Put it to the test and see how things will change. But we do not. In any case, Christ has told each of us what awaits us. Just as He said what awaited Him when He became man, so He has told us what awaits every one of us as human beings. And if a person pays no attention to what He has said concerning each of us, Christ says that one day He will bring us to judgment.

We shall be judged even for idle words—not only for evil deeds and the like, but for idle words. Your mouth was not given to you so that you might pour yourself out in empty talk, speaking words into the air. Your mouth was given to you to praise God; your soul was given to you to praise God. ‘Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.’ ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.’ You have no time for useless things. But who takes these things into account? Who considers them? Who pays attention to them? ‘Panagopoulos is mad, the Gospel is mad, everything is mad.’ Truly, that is how people think. Go on your way, then, and we shall discuss it when we reach the crossroads. Will we not all pass through that crossroads? There is no choice; no one will escape it. Just as Christ told them, He has also told us. He is going up to Jerusalem for this purpose. Very well. Are we Orthodox Christians also going up to Jerusalem today, or are we not? We are.

Are we going up? Yes, to follow Him. But the question is how we are going up. What matters is how each person goes up to Jerusalem. Are we going up prepared to follow the Passion of Christ, or to crucify Christ again? That is the question. Most of us who are called Orthodox Christians are going up to crucify Him again. This strange thing that takes place during the days of Christ's Passion, and throughout this whole matter, is incomprehensible. Christ is the victim, and we are the executioners. We crucified Him, we nailed Him to the Cross, and we nail Him there again.

And we have the audacity to hold the funeral of our own victim, because every Great Friday we conduct the burial procession of the One we have made our victim. Usually, however, when a victim is buried, the perpetrator is either a fugitive or in prison, because he has been caught. Yet we have the audacity, burdened with all our sins, without metanoia and repentance, without confession, and without acknowledging what we have done, to go to the Epitaphios, carry it in procession, and mock Him. Then the Epitaphios is held at the door, and we pass beneath it. Why? What does this mean? Do you know what it means? It means, ‘I make a prostration before You. I will place You above my head. Tell me what You would have me do. I want to be under Your authority.’ That is what this act expresses. It is not performed merely to observe some Greek custom or one of our other foolish practices.

It is metanoia and repentance. ‘I make a prostration before You; I obey You; I acknowledge You.’ Otherwise, the act is sheer mockery. Today, my beloved, people ask for miracles. Someone says, ‘Unless I see, I will not believe.’ But do you not see the greatest miracle—that Christ still puts up with you? Is there a greater miracle than that? Such forbearance—the forbearance of Christ! We do all these crooked and contradictory things, and still He bears with us. Do you want a greater miracle? This is the greatest miracle. That He raised someone in Capernaum, or someone elsewhere, and so forth—those things are nothing compared with this: we mock Him in this way, and still He bears with us and waits for us. This is His patient forbearance. And what is said of Judas on Great Thursday, ‘Glory to Your longsuffering, O Lord,’ should be said for every Judas among us.

Indeed, it is said for every one of us. For here we are in the twentieth century: we have landed on the moon and claim to have learned so many things, yet we knowingly refuse to accept the Gospel and cast it aside. Why, then, should He bear with us? Does He need us as voters? Why? How do you imagine Christ—as though He needed us? He does not need us; we need Him. A person must give this some thought. So consider how you are going up to Jerusalem. How are you going up to follow the Holy Passion of Christ? How? Loaded down with sins, carrying axes and saws so that we may go up, make Him a Cross, and nail Him to it again. We are not simply going up once more to receive our holiday bonus.

We go to enjoy the holiday, spend time in pleasant company, eat goat and lamb, crack dyed eggs, dance, and wish one another many years. But Christ is not for the sake of this worldly celebration; He came for the sins of the world. A person must understand this, accept it, and humble himself. Of course, He has given all these things for man's enjoyment, but each in its proper time and proper manner. Man is not merely a natural being; he is a supernatural being, and a Christian in particular must exercise discernment in every circumstance. What could be more natural than to feel hungry? There is nothing unnatural about it. And what could be more natural than eating when I am hungry? I am hungry; that means I should eat. Very well. But if he stops there, man remains an animal, for an animal also grows hungry and eats. Man, however, is something more. I am hungry and should eat—but what

shall I eat? This is what distinguishes man. What shall I eat? Today is Wednesday. What shall I eat? It is Great Lent. What shall I eat? Yes, eat—but what shall I eat? There may be five non-fasting foods and a million fasting foods. Why will you not choose from those? This is where you stumble. This is where your true condition is revealed. Thank you very much! God gave you a wife, yes. Why? To have children. Do you? No. Do you come together with your wife when it is proper, and refrain when it is not, unlike the animals? You do not. Where, then, is your superiority? Where is your spirituality? Where is the proof that you are something more? We are at fault; we have not paid these things the attention they deserve. God has ordered everything well and beautifully.

His commandments cause no harm and place no obstacle in our path. It is we who have refused to bend down and examine them carefully. They are for our benefit, however harsh they may seem. You know how people say, ‘This treatment can be done, but it will cost a great deal.’ ‘Let my loved one recover, whatever it costs,’ a person replies, and he rushes to obtain it. Why do you not say the same here: ‘Let my soul not be lost, and I will sacrifice everything’? As for the body, whether it wishes it or not, tomorrow it will pay its debt. ‘You are dust, and to dust you shall return.’ You are made up of eggplants, okra, water, phosphorus, lime, and iron. You received all these things from the earth, and you will repay those debts to the earth. But what will happen to the soul, which is the breath of God and will return to the One who gave it? You will repay the bodily debt whether you want to or not. But as for the other debt—

the days and seasons that the Church sets before us each year are beautifully ordered. If a person were willing to confront what they seek to teach him and the spiritual benefit they offer, he could have been saved many times over, not merely once. But we observe them only outwardly. Habit, like a steamroller, flattens everything, and we remain just as we are. So we go up to Jerusalem in vain. Christ said, ‘Whoever desires to come after Me, let him take up his cross and follow Me.’ Where is the cross? Some people have not yet abstained from the cooking pot, from the flesh, from their tongue, or from their eyes. They have fasted from nothing during these days. They entered the fast living as they always did, and they will leave it in the same condition. Where are you going, brother? Where are you heading? When will you crucify what belongs to you? When will you crucify your flesh,

your desires, your hands, and your eyes? When will you do this, so that you may care for your immortal soul? When do onions begin to sprout, my beloved? When the outside withers. If the outside does not wither, do onions sprout? No. Why, then, do you keep feeding and pampering this onion, the human body? And when you cut this onion, you will weep. You yourself will weep, and so will those around you. Have you never read what the Apostle Paul said: ‘As the outward man withers, the inward man flourishes’? Why do you and I not pay attention to this? We are not, then, going up together with Christ. We tell Him, ‘You go and be crucified, and send us the holiday bonus.’ We wait for it, because Pascha is coming and they must pay it. We have already bought a television on installments, counting on that bonus. And we expect Christ to roast the lamb for us and provide the eggs and Paschal breads.

Now we arrange things as we please. How long will God continue to be so generous? God is generous; He is open-handed. Eat, man, drink your fill, whatever you desire. He even gave quail in the wilderness to those stiff-necked Hebrews. What does He give us? Go through the marketplace and ask, “What has this God provided for us?” Go to the meat market, the fish market, the vegetable market, the fruit market. What has this God provided for us? But we have an obligation to be discerning about each thing. “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial.” That is what the Apostle said. So we are not going up as we ought. He went up so that we might go up free from sin. Yet people remain unrepentant for years. Some confessed five or six things and left out all the rest. Some concealed sins and said, “My spiritual father did not ask me,” and so they did not mention them.

The doctor does not ask you either, but you wear him out: “You know, doctor, it hurts here too; and there too; I feel this, and I feel that,” and so on. He did not ask you about every detail, yet you tell him everything. Why do you speak about the one and not the other? Do you count your immortal soul as nothing, or do you have no soul? If you have no soul, then kill yourself and blow your brains out. Why go on living? You are only adding more sins, since you have already condemned your soul in this way. Yet you do not kill yourself, because you sense that something is within you, something speaks to you, something is there. That “something” truly exists, and it is what man must attend to. So I do not know how you yourselves will respond. Christ says, “I shall go and be crucified out of love for mankind; I shall go willingly.” If I now crucify myself—my flesh, my will, my eyes, my very skin—I am not doing Christ a favor. I repeat: Christ has no need of me.

I do it for my own sake, for my own benefit. What a difference! He did it out of love for others. I do it out of love for Christ, but also for my own benefit. And yet we do not even value ourselves, because people do not understand that they also have a soul. On Sunday mornings, you see people outside their homes with hoses, washing their cars. But how will you take a hose and wash yourself—wash your soul? Who will wash it? They care for their horses, their dogs, and their gardens; they prune them. And rightly so—I am not saying they should neglect these things. But when will you labor for your immortal soul? When will you cleanse it?

An American came to a village and bought a chestnut horse, and he spent two hours a day grooming it with a currycomb. Two hours every day caring for the horse—but never once did he go to Church. One day the priest was passing by and said to him, “Mr. George, what are you doing?” “Oh, I am here looking after my chestnut,” he replied. That is what they call a reddish-brown horse. The priest asked, “About how many hours a day does this take you?” “Two hours—and sometimes three.” “Every day?” “Of course, Father, every day.” “And how many hours a day do you devote to your soul?” “Oh, Father, now you are talking about the soul...” Is your soul worth less than that horse? Then take its bridle—the halter, as they call it in military language—and put it on yourself, so that you may perish an hour sooner. How have you still failed to discern your immortal soul and understand that you are a person?

Your personhood is not your fingers; it is your soul. Let me make that much clear. In any case, Christ sets every person’s relationship with everyone else in order. He says, “I shall take up My Cross out of love for others. I am not telling you to love Me; I am telling you to love yourself. It is to your benefit to follow Me. You do not want to? Then live as you please.” What I am telling you is certainly difficult, but it is not impossible. People choose difficult and uncommon fields of study, knowing that they will toil at their desks, wear out many pairs of trousers, and pour many eye drops into their eyes, so that one day they may excel and reach the top. And they do this without knowing whether they will complete their studies, or whether, after receiving their diploma—or several diplomas—tonight, they will even be alive tomorrow, especially with so many...

...forms of death entering the world today in so many ways. People are gathered up from a collision with an electric pole, from an airplane crash, from electrocution, and I do not know what else. A thousand more ways have now been added by which man may leave this world sooner. Yet you praise such a person and say, “Well done! He ruined his eyesight studying, but still...” What, then, should someone who considers that something exists beyond the grave do? How should he think? And yet man thinks neither about himself nor about anyone else. “I shall sacrifice myself,” he says, “so that my children may have a good life.” But will your children truly live? You do well to educate them—but might you actually be deforming them spiritually? That is the question. A child is like a vehicle, and knowledge is a vehicle. But Christ is the vehicle’s brake; and however expensive the vehicle may be, without brakes it will not remain intact.

It will destroy its passenger and kill those it encounters along the way. So it is with man. But where is this understanding? People make their preparations. They have ordered lambs, yogurt, eggs—everything, everything. Plenty of money, but no concern at all for the soul. I often speak with the various drivers who take me home. I see that some are from the Peloponnese, others from Euboea, and so forth. Do they discuss anything with me concerning the soul? No. They talk about how they will travel home and how eagerly they await Pascha so that they can roast the young goats. They have everything ready; they will roast the lambs together, and so on. Not one word about Christ—not even when they say, “Christ is Risen.” Or they stand outside the Church, take the light, and hurry home for the Easter soup. These are people who have not yet even begun the fast. Do you understand? This does not apply to you, you think. Here the Gospel relates an incident. Even those who were close to Him still had not grasped the matter; they had not yet been freed from their weaknesses.

While Christ was speaking about death, the Cross, burial, and the Resurrection—when they ought to have bowed their heads and begun to weep—“James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.’” They were even setting a trap for Him: “Will You promise to do what we ask when we tell You?” Without first hearing it? That is neither right nor honest. How can I promise you? Let me first hear what you want, and then I can give you an answer. But they were trying to bind Him beforehand. In any case, “He said to them, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ And they said to Him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at Your right hand and one at Your left...’”

“...in Your glory.” They imagined Him establishing an earthly kingdom, ruling in Jerusalem and Rome, and driving out the Roman conquerors, the occupying forces of that time. So they were saying, “Will You promise that we, Your closest friends, shall stand one on Your right and one on Your left? We shall be Your aides-de-camp.” He speaks about the Cross, while they envision a throne and a kingdom. The same thing happens with us. “But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you are asking.’” You do not know, He says, what you are asking. You have completely missed the point. You are speaking about something altogether different. Then He challenges them: “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the Baptism with which I am baptized?”

Man is not always of sound mind. They answer just as Holy Scripture records: “They said to Him, ‘We are able.’” The cup is death, and the Baptism is the blood that will be shed—yet in their state of mind they say, “We are able.” In any case, Christ did not humiliate them. He gave them a prophecy: “Jesus said to them, ‘The cup’—the cup of death—‘that I drink you will drink.’” You too will later be crucified. “And with the Baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.” You too will shed your blood and be baptized in it. “But to sit at My right hand and at My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” Those who afterward prove themselves worthy through their trials...

...will sit there. They will not sit there without bearing witness and without laboring. He calls death a cup, and man does not want it; he turns his face away. Bitter indeed is the cup of death. Christ’s Baptism is the blood that was shed. Our Christ was not baptized in water; He was baptized in blood. Baptism in water is joined to the metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession that we now undertake. But if we are to speak of the Baptism that saves, it is our Christ’s Baptism in His own blood. And He prophesies to them, saying, “You have spoken well; you too will drink this cup of death.” We do not know all the details of what befell James.

They smashed his head with a fuller’s wooden club, the tool used for dipping and dyeing woolen cloth. Imagine how thick it must have been! They split his head open. And John likewise... How deeply deluded man is when he is outside the Spirit of Christ! A person must say to Christ, “Give me light from Your own light. You came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in You may truly see.” For He is “the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world,” so that people may see. Without the light, there is no light. Man possesses no light of his own; he receives light from another, like this lamp. Unless it is connected to the source of light, it is worth nothing. Once it is connected, however, it has value, because the light enables it to fulfill its purpose. So it is with man.

Blessed is the person who receives Christ in this world as his Counselor and says, “Tell me how I should act and what I should do. Should I do this or not?” There would not be such rivers of tears, so many failures, so much enmity, so many imprisonments, and so many deaths if Christ’s counsel were sought in these matters. But people see only this world. Beyond their flesh, beyond the applause and praise of the world, they see nothing, though that is not where the true center of gravity lies. You gentlemen will work, He says; you will labor. It is not for Me simply to appoint you. Besides, I am not speaking about the kind of thrones you have in mind. My throne is above, not here. “In the world you will have tribulation.” They crucified Me, and they will crucify you.

They persecuted Me, and they will persecute you. They put Me to death. If they do these things to the green wood, what will they do to you, the dry? That was the answer He gave. But there is something very instructive here. Do you know what another Evangelist says? They had their mother go to Christ and try to draw this promise from Him—that He would place her sons at His right and left as His aides-de-camp. Christ speaks about death and burial, while they speak about a throne. This is how every person speaks, and we have become like the snail that sings while it is being burned. Have you heard that when a snail is put into the fire, it begins to sing? That is what we are like; this is what we have come to. “And when the ten heard it,” the others now became envious when they heard that these two had gone to ask for the foremost places, and “they began,” it says—the other ten...

“...to be indignant with James and John.” In any case, Christ reconciled them once again. Once again He found a way to bridge the division between them. “And calling them to Himself, He said to them, ‘You know that those who are considered rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.’” This, He says, is what the world does. In order to be rulers, people trample upon others and coerce them. “Yet it shall not be so among you.” We do not have such a way of life, He says, nor such preaching, nor such a mindset. “But whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.” Do you want to be great? Become a servant. Show your love for your fellow man. Place yourself at the service of another, because being a Christian does not mean placing yourself at your own service.

It means placing yourself at the service of another. This is how a Christian is revealed and how a Christian differs from others. “And whoever of you desires to become first shall be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” He came, it says, to give His life and redeem many. And how many will these “many” be? The many are those who are willing. Whoever desires salvation will be saved; whoever does not desire it will not be saved. Christ coerces no one. He has freely prepared salvation for every person and says, “Come and receive it.” One comes, another does not. The one who comes on the terms Christ has given is saved, while the other perishes—not because Christ disregarded him, but because he himself was unwilling. Even when we want electricity from the power company, someone comes to inspect the installation.

Has the installation been done correctly? Are the meters, fuses, resistors, and everything else in order? They will not give you electricity if something is faulty. How, then, will God give you salvation when you refuse to put His instructions into practice? If you have a certain appliance, you are required to have the proper amperage, resistance, and all the other specifications. That is the prescribed standard. If you do not follow the company’s requirements, you receive no electricity. The same applies to water and to the telephone. How, then, can you rebel when the matter concerns your soul? Can you simply think and do whatever you please? How will you enter the Kingdom of Heaven in defiance of Him who established the way for you—freely, moreover, with no charges for the service—when you refuse to follow it, O man? So, if you think we can draw from these things a small example of how we should live during these remaining days, then let us do so.

By the grace of the Lord, we are going up to Jerusalem. Many others will intend to go up, but they will not have time. They will go up to the other Jerusalem; some will depart from this life. If it is not someone among us, it will be someone in our neighborhood or elsewhere. If you read how many people die each day—fifty thousand people leave this life every hour. Every hour throughout the whole world, fifty thousand depart and go up, while another sixty thousand come down, newly born into the world. Do you understand? A whole city goes up, and a whole city comes down. Many, then, will have intended to travel, made promises, bought tickets, and arranged appointments for these days. They will plan to go to Kyparissia, yet find themselves in the Jerusalem above. For death comes in a fraction of a second, at an unexpected moment. It asks no one’s permission and respects no one. It is blunt and iron-faced, sparing neither poor nor rich, neither powerful nor beautiful. So if we truly desire and believe—and I pray that we do—we must not merely go to this earthly Jerusalem and understand what happened there...

He was crucified—but why was He crucified? If we also desire to reach the Jerusalem above, which I wish for everyone, then we must make this small effort. We too must lay down every sin we have. There is a way: metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession. They put everything in order and reconcile man with God once again. Holy Communion is what brings the human person to his full potential and gives him the ticket to pass into the world above. If you see any truth in these words, take heed. Those of you who have not yet begun the fast, begin fasting from now on. Those who have not confessed, go to Holy Confession. Go—it is Great Lent now. You will have time to sin again; the world will not end, and no one is taking away your wallet. Go farther away if need be, to priests who do not know you, so that this year Christ’s Passion may not remain merely Christ’s Passion, but may become saving for us; so that it may not be only Christ’s Passion, but may also bring us salvation. And may God count us worthy...

...to behold His Resurrection both here in this world and in the world to come. This I wish for one another and for all. Amen.

«Ἐμπαίξουσιν αὐτῷ καὶ μαστιγώσουσιν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐμπτύσουσιν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀναστήσεται». Τη τρίτη, όχι με τα τρεις που μετράνε ορισμένοι από την Παρασκευή μέχρι την Κυριακή, που είναι τρεις ημέρες. Ψέματα, λέει, «τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀναστήσεται». «Τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγείρομαι», λέγει στο άλλο μέρος. Πρώτη ημέρα είναι η Παρασκευή, δευτέρα ημέρα είναι το Σάββατο και τρίτη είναι η Κυριακή. Οι Εβραίοι μετρούσανε από ήλιο σε ήλιο, από έξι έξι, όπως τα λέμε. Τη νύχτα έχουν φυλακές εν νυκτί, βάρδιες. Πότε απέθανε; Ποια είναι η πρώτη ημέρα που απέθανε;

θα δούμε ότι εκάμαμε λάθος εκτιμήσεως, αλλά θα είναι αργά. Και τα παιδιά μας ακόμη, θα έχετε δει ότι τα προσέχουμε σαν αντικείμενα, σαν μπιμπελό. Όχι ως αθάνατες υπάρξεις. Δεν ποντάρουμε στην ψυχή του και δεν προσέχουμε την ψυχή του. Του βάζουμε το θερμόμετρο για τα δέκατα μήπως έχει το παιδί. Του έχουμε ζυγαριά για τα γραμμάριά του. Τώρα, αν στέλνει στον διάολο τον πατέρα του, αν μουτζώνει, αν φακελώνει, αν δεν ακούει κανέναν, αν τα σπάει, αν φτιάχνει, αυτά θα τα κόψει όταν είναι μεγάλος. Μεγάλος θα κόψει εσένα και μένα. Τι θα κάνει άμα μεγαλώσει; Γιατί δεν βλέπουμε αθάνατη ψυχή. Ποια μάνα νηστεύει αυτές τις μέρες το παιδί της; Πείτε μου, ποια μάνα νηστεύει το παιδί της; Εφόσον το προσέχει τόσο για το σώμα του, και καλώς κάνει, δεν λέω καμία αντίρρηση. Όμως η αθάνατος ψυχή του πού θα πάει;

Το κάνω για το δικό μου, το συμφέρον το δικό μου θα το κάνω. Πόσο διαφορετικά! Αυτός το έκανε από αγάπη προς τους άλλους. Εγώ το κάνω προς αγάπη προς τον Χριστό, το κάνω από συμφέρον στον εαυτό μου αυτό το πράγμα. Και εντούτοις ούτε καν τον υπολογίζουμε τον εαυτό μας, διότι δεν καταλαβαίνουν οι άνθρωποι ότι έχουν και ψυχή. Βλέπετε ανθρώπους με τις μάνικες απ' έξω στα σπίτια, Κυριακή πρωί, και πλένουν τα αυτοκίνητά τους. Πώς θα βάλεις μάνικα να πλύνεις τον εαυτό σου, την ψυχή σου; Ποιος θα την πλύνει; Περιποιούνται τ' άλογά τους, περιποιούνται τους σκύλους, περιποιούνται τους κήπους τους, τους κλαδεύουν. Και καλά κάνουν, εγώ δεν λέω να τα αφήσουν απεριποίητα ούτε να μην... Αλλά για την αθάνατη ψυχή σου πότε θα εργαστείς; Πότε θα την καθαρίσεις αυτή;

Ήρθε ένας Αμερικανός, είχε πάρει ένα κόκκινο άλογο σε ένα χωριό και δύο ώρες την ημέρα έκανε ξυστρί. Το έκανε ιπποκομία, δύο ώρες την ημέρα. Εκκλησία ποτέ. Πάει κάποτε ο παπάς, περνούσε από εκεί, του λέει: «Κύριε Γιώργη, τι κάνεις;». «Α, εδώ», λέει, «περιποιούμαι τον ντορή», έτσι το λένε το κόκκινο. Λέει: «Πόσες ώρες περίπου σου τρώει την ημέρα αυτό το πράγμα;» «Δυο ώρες, δε, και τρεις καμιά φορά». «Κάθε ημέρα;». «Βέβαια, ρε, κάθε ημέρα». «Για την ψυχή σου», λέει, «πόσες ώρες διαθέτεις την ημέρα;». «Ω, παπά, τώρα για ψυχή...». Κατώτερη από τον ντορή η ψυχή; Πάρ' τον λοιπόν. Τι του βάνεις; Τη χαλινωτήρα, που λένε στη στρατιωτική γλώσσα, που τη βάζεις στ' άλογο; Φόρεσέ τη εσύ να γλιτώσεις μια ώρα γρηγορότερα. Πώς λοιπόν δεν διέκρινες ακόμη την αθάνατη ψυχή σου, ότι είσαι προσωπικότης;
