Summary

The Nativity is the spiritual foundation and “metropolis” of all Christian feasts because Christ’s birth makes His Baptism, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension possible. Good works cannot erase sin or provide entrance into Paradise, because salvation and life come only through Christ’s sacrifice, life-giving Cross, and cleansing blood. True preparation for Christmas therefore centers on repentance, sincere confession, communion with Christ, and spiritual renewal rather than material celebration.

As you can see, we have entered a season that began on the feast of Saint Philip and prepares the world for the great day known as Christmas. It is true that some people prepare and others do not. Yet they too ought to prepare, because Christmas Day is a unique and unrepeatable day. What took place on Christmas Day does not happen over and over again. One might call it the greatest event, because it is the starting point of all the other feasts. For, as you know, the One who was born is the One who was circumcised, the One who was baptized, the One who was crucified, the One who was buried, the One who rose, and the One who ascended. Had He not been born, we would have had neither the Circumcision nor the Baptism, neither the Burial nor the Resurrection nor the Ascension. It is therefore, we might say, the starting point of all the feasts. That is why John Chrysostom calls Christmas Day the “Metropolis of the Feasts”—that is, the greatest feast. Unfortunately, we have not given it the importance we ought to have given it.

We ourselves do not prepare for it as we ought. And, as you know, each person receives in proportion to his preparation. As we repeatedly pray, if you have noticed, “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in You,” so in this case we might say, “according as we have prepared.” I said earlier that some people may make no spiritual preparation at all, while making material, bodily, and worldly preparations. Indeed, they wear themselves out, become irritable, and lose their peace because they do not have enough time to prepare certain material things

which they consider essential.

People have made a mistake. They have failed to understand that the feast is entirely spiritual and not material at all. It concerns the soul, not the body. Of course, many people also need the things the Lord provides for the body: some special food, a better drink, good company, a little more money, and so forth. Preparations are made for all these things; we gather them together and enjoy them, but we neglect the spiritual things. If anyone were asked—even an unbeliever, an atheist, or someone indifferent—what is the reason for all this commotion, what is the reason for your thirteenth-month salary,

what is the reason for your three-day holiday, what is the reason for this whole affair and all this commotion—what is it? It is Someone in whom you do not believe. “Out of your own words I will judge you,” He once said. And if you are sincere in your unbelief, you have no right even to enjoy these things or so much as look at them. Yet you gather everything up, skim off the best of it, experience it, and enjoy it, while rejecting the One who is the cause of it all. Exactly what He said will come to pass: “You wicked servant, out of your own words I will judge you.” My beloved, Christ has moved the world, moves it now, and will move it throughout eternity. And Christ did not begin to move the world only when He was born. Christ has been spoken of ever since the world began.

He is the only person whose history begins before His earthly birth. Christ is not some Napoleon or Alexander the Great; He is not some Kaiser, Hitler, or Stalin. Christ is the One whose history precedes His birth. Ever since man has existed in the world, there has been talk of Christ—of Christ’s coming, the manner of His birth, the place of His birth, and the time of His birth. What other great man has such a history? The histories of all others were written from the day they were born until the day they departed this world. But the history of Christ has been written since the world began, since there were two human beings with the devil in their midst. Christ has been spoken of ever since then.

Four persons and one symbol stand foremost in history: our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Honorable Forerunner, and the Precious Cross. These persons and this symbol, which played a foremost role in the history of the human race, were foreknown—foreknown by God. Holy Scripture records, from the time when there were only two human beings, that God said of Christ that He would be born of a woman.

Someone may ask, “Is it so remarkable for a person to be born of a woman?” It is remarkable, because in the language of the genealogy it is the man who “begets,” while the woman gives birth. The day after tomorrow, on Sunday, we shall hear: “Abraham begot Isaac.” It does not say, “Sarah begot him.” “Isaac begot Jacob”; it does not say, “Rebecca begot him.”

“Jacob begot Judah and his brothers”; it does not say, “Rachel begot them.” But when the genealogy reaches Joseph, the man presumed to be Mary’s husband, it says, “of whom Christ was born.” Thus Christ was born neither of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man. This was a wondrous conception and a wondrous birth. Why? Because the role He came to fulfill in the world was also wondrous. If a person were truly to sit down and reflect upon this birth, he would be beside himself—if he had any sense of honor. If he had any sense of honor, he would be beside himself when he saw what this God had done for man. And yet it passes unnoticed, as though nothing had happened.

A few branches from a fir tree, some little lights around them, a little cotton wool on a windowpane, baubles here and there, and so on—this is what Christmas means to people. This is what Christmas means to people. Why did Christ come to man, my dear friend? Did He come to create holidays? He did not come to create holidays. Why did God become man? So that man might become god by grace. This is why God came into the world. God came and became man so that man might become god by grace. For God to become man, He used a ladder called the Most Holy Theotokos—the Theotokos, the God-bearer—by which God descended. And for man to rise again and become god by grace, there is One called Christ, through whom man comes to the Father, my dear friend.

Man must learn about this ladder, this stairway, this way—and he must learn it well. He must not be content merely with a candle, a votive offering, an icon, or an oil lamp burning before it. All these things are certainly good and remind us of something, but he must go deeper and understand what God has done and what God asks of man. From the beginning it was said that Someone would be born who would avenge mankind against its enemy. Who is mankind’s enemy? Satan. “Since the children share in flesh and blood,” Paul says to the Hebrews, his fellow countrymen, “He Himself likewise partook of the same.” Likewise, but not in exactly the same manner—not through the will of the flesh or the seed of a man in a woman.

“He Himself likewise partook of the same.” Since the children—that is, human beings—were of flesh and blood, “He Himself likewise partook of the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver them.” This is why Christ came into the world. Eve heard the first Gospel, spoken by God against Satan: that the seed of a woman would crush his head, while he would bruise His heel. Poor Eve thought that she herself would give birth to the avenger. That is why she named her first child Cain. She thought she had given birth to the avenger, because Cain is interpreted as “avenger.” But she had not. It would be another woman.

It was the Most Holy Theotokos, whom God foresaw some five thousand five hundred years later, and her seed was Christ. That is why Paul, when he appears upon the scene, writes to the Galatians. And on Christmas night our Church appoints the reading from Galatians 4:4: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, that He might redeem those under the Law, that we might receive adoption as sons—that we might receive adoption as sons.” People are wrongly called children of God, and our theologians—even our great theologians—are wrong to say that all people are children of God. But as many as received Christ,

“to them He gave authority to become children of God.” If you do not receive Christ as your Savior and Redeemer, if you do not receive His teaching, His Gospel, His Church, His clergy, and His Mysteries, then you remain a creature fashioned by God, a creation of God—not a child of God. You have no right to an inheritance; you cannot inherit in the age to come. John writes plainly in the first chapter, verse 12: “As many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God.” Paul says the same: “that we might receive adoption as sons.” We had lost our adoption. We had ceased to be children of God. And Christ came to reconcile man to God and bring man to peace with God—not God to man, but man to God. For on God’s part, as John Chrysostom says,

it is man who must be reconciled to God. Man turned his back on God, just as he does today. God runs after him to take hold of him, to tell him why He came into the world and how greatly it is to his benefit to learn this. Yet man does not want God, because God exposes his lawless way of life. Yes, Christ has been spoken of from the beginning.

Prophecy after prophecy! Prophecies, symbols, and images that speak of Christ. Christ, then, has a history from the foundation of the world; Christ has been proclaimed from the foundation of the world. Eight hundred years before Christ, Isaiah, like a fifth Evangelist, writes of the events of the Crucifixion. He sees Him: “He was numbered with the transgressors”; “He bears our sins and suffers pain for us”; among the lawless upon the Cross, and with the rich man in the tomb. He sees Him being born of a Virgin: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel.”

What do the prophets not see concerning Christ? Here, then, is a person announced and proclaimed beforehand: the person of Jesus. And He will be proclaimed until the last drop of human life on this earth. As the Apocalypse so beautifully records, Christ says, “Behold, I am coming quickly,” and John replies, “Yes, come, Lord Jesus.” The name of Jesus stands foremost throughout Holy Scripture, from Genesis to the Apocalypse. And yet this God, who is present everywhere, is unfortunately absent everywhere. The God who is present everywhere is absent everywhere, because exceptions can never establish the rule. Among today’s Christians, even if they know

how to light candles and burn incense and do such things, do they know why Christ came into the world, what role He fulfilled in the world, how greatly man needs Him, and what a person must do to be saved if, in his human weakness, he falls? Unfortunately, the Christian outlook has been reduced to producing good people. Let me take this opportunity to tell you: all merely “good people” are in Hell. There is not one merely good person in Paradise. Someone will ask, “Then who will enter Paradise, if good people go to Hell?” Christians will enter Paradise. Christians will enter Paradise, not good people who are not Christians at all—even though they may be very good people.

There are good people who are not Christians at all. They do not know where the door of the Church is; they want to hear nothing about Christ, see nothing of Christ’s clergy, and hear nothing of His Gospel—and yet they are good people. They have done many good works in their lives, perhaps more than Christians have done, and yet they will be condemned. A person’s works create a place for him in Paradise, but they do not give him entrance into Paradise. It is one thing to have a place there and another to pass through the entrance and reach that place. People do not know Christ, the One who opens the entrance into Paradise. That is why the churches are empty. That is why these seats are vacant. If people understood how indispensable Christ is,

the churches would have to be twenty times larger than they are. There would have to be ten times as many priests, and they would scarcely have time to hear the believers’ confessions and give them Holy Communion. Yet the same idea persists: “But do you know what a good person he is?” Ask the devil that. Why ask me? He knows what the man is. Tell me whether he attends church, whether he goes to Holy Confession, whether he receives Holy Communion, whether he is married, whether he has children, whether, if unmarried, he practices self-restraint, whether he fasts, and whether he prays. These are the things you must present to me as evidence. And even if he does all these things, with what disposition does he do them? He may do them all without humility, but out of egotism. Then once again they count for nothing. Passing into eternity is a subtle and exacting matter.

For a person to pass into eternity is no small matter. The cost is high, because a kingdom is at stake, while it is easy for anyone to pass into Hades. It is Christ who accomplishes all this work, all this preparation, and the full spiritual formation of the human person. That is why the whole world needs to know Christ. There is no other person who will judge humanity, from Adam until the consummation of the age. “For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Holy Scripture says this in Acts 4:12, written by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Read it and see. There is no such thing as saving ourselves, nor salvation by works, nor salvation through the world. Who is our salvation? Christ. “For unto you is born this day a Savior.”

“Christ the Lord is born; unto you is born,” the angel says to the shepherds, “a Savior”—for you, not for us angels; “a Savior is born.” Whom does He wish to save? He wishes to save His people from their sins. From when does He have a people? While He is still in His mother’s womb, Scripture says that He has a people, and that His people are sinful. “For He shall save His people from their sins.” He has not yet been born, and He already has a people? Yes, because He is also God. And He wishes to save them from their sins. So this is the question: what is the place of my sins in relation to Christ? Not in relation to my good works, because many people have committed many sins and then try to pay them off with their works.

They do not confess them or bring them into the open. They use some other quack remedy of their own to pay off their sins—but sins cannot be paid off. They will find themselves still bound, because they did not turn to Christ and the blood of Christ; for only the blood of Christ cleanses us from every sin. Sins are not paid for. A person may perform all the good works in the world and have them credited to his account, from righteous Abel to the last righteous person at the consummation of the age, yet not one of those works can wipe away a single sin. A person’s sins are forgiven when he repents of them and presents them to Christ. This, then, is the great event now unfolding before us. If only a person were willing to acknowledge it...

Christ is the One who came to take away the sins of humanity. A person comes from his mother’s womb in a sinful state, even though he has committed no personal sins, because his father’s seed bears the fallen condition of sin. It is something dead, in need of burial and resurrection. “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me,” David cries out. That is why, as I believe we once said from this very pulpit, mothers in the old days called a baby boy a little dragon and a baby girl a little she-dragon. Today they call them little angels, although before Baptism they are little devils. These are Satan’s deceptions. The child comes in a sinful state, with a darkened soul, and is buried as the sinner that he is. He is buried and raised again. But what is he to blame for? No one said that he was personally at fault. This happens precisely because he comes burdened with an injustice that is not his own.

The priest says there: “You were justified, you were baptized, you were chrismated, you were sanctified.” What does “you were justified” mean? You yourself were not at fault; Adam was. But now Christ comes, sacrifices Himself for you, and justifies you. From this point onward, you will bear responsibility. Everything you had before this has now been cleansed; from this point onward, however, you are responsible. And yet the person refuses that responsibility. He rejects it, renouncing both the responsibility and the confession he made before Christ through his godparent. Then, when he grows a little older, he turns to Christ and says, “Leave me alone, Christ.” Why are you leaving, my brave fellow? “Because You require virginity. I will go with the devil, who does not. You desire children. I will go with the devil, who does not. You require fasting. I will go with the devil, who does not.” Go, then—but first take off the white garment I gave you on the day you were baptized.

If you ever repent and return, I will come and give it back to you. But if you do not return, if you do not repent, if you do not say, “I have sinned,” you will remain naked and exposed. During Holy Week you will cry and lament, “I have no wedding garment, that I may enter in.” Why do you have none, my brave fellow? Did it cost you anything to have one? Did we not give you Baptism? Why did you take the garment off? Why did you throw it away? Why did you abandon it? Repent, weep, shed tears, and I will give it back to you. But man is proud. He does not repent, wants no conversation with Jesus, and goes about his own business. Unfortunately, there are many people, especially in our own day, who think this way and yet are preparing to celebrate Christmas. He has ordered the lamb and often has already borrowed money against his Christmas bonus, even though he has not yet received it. He has taken an advance from others, saying, “When I receive the bonus, I will repay them, and that will settle it,” and so on.

He spends it in advance, certain that Christ is faithful and will provide the money, the thirteenth salary, and everything else. This is who we are, and we will have to give an account for what we do with all these things. What, then, does Christ ultimately ask of us? He came into the world—but what does He ask from the human person? He asks for sins. He came because of the sins of the world; He came to destroy the works of Satan. He does not ask for your wallet. He does not ask you to light candles in His house, make votive offerings, bring oil, donate such things, or give bricks. He asks for your sins. Do not replace the way of your salvation with something else. First give Him your sins, and afterward do whatever else you can. He does not forbid you to bring your candle, your oil, and the rest. But first, your sins. Sit down, confess yourself honestly, and then go forward.

Let Heaven rejoice. Heaven does not rejoice merely because you establish the greatest charitable institution imaginable and have your name inscribed upon a column of benefactors or donors. Heaven does not rejoice merely because you feed a million orphans and two million elderly people. Heaven rejoices only “over one sinner who repents.” If you repent and give up your sins, then whatever good you do afterward—even if you give only a cup of water—will receive a hundredfold reward. But if you do everything else—feed the whole world, shelter the whole world, clothe the whole world, gather all the iron, bricks, and cement, and build every church and monastery in the world...

You will go to Hell forty times over. Christ had no part in what you did. The blood of Christ had no part in it.

But as for salvation “by works,” “all our righteousness is like a filthy rag”—like a cloth stained with a woman’s blood. Such is human righteousness before God. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses us from every sin. Let none of us be deceived. Learn this once and for all. We will do good according to our strength, but we will never place our hope of salvation in those works. Our hope is the sacrifice of Jesus, the Crucifixion of Jesus, the life-giving side of Jesus, the life-giving tomb of Jesus, the life-giving Cross of Jesus. Life-giving—do you understand? Life-giving: it brings life. Savior—from what did He save me? From death. What was humanity’s calamity? Humanity’s calamity was death. What is the remedy for death? Life. Who possesses life? God.

He comes and gives life to humanity. If you do not receive Christ, you do not have life. “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” What can you say to that? Does not our Christ say it, and does not John write it? In this sense, then, my beloved, you must place the matter of Christ firmly within your nous—the spiritual intellect—this Christmas. Christ came into the world because of the sins of the world. He came as my Savior and my Redeemer. “Have you fallen? Arise, and you shall be saved.” This is the command. You are human; you will fall. Perhaps someone pushed you, perhaps you slipped, perhaps you were careless, perhaps you did not understand or did not know. Have you fallen? Get up. Do you know how many people remain fallen? Do you know how many have made false confessions? Do you know how many have confessed...

Insincerely, without honesty? They have mentioned a few things on the surface, but they have not confessed the rest—the grave sins, the axe blows. They blamed their mother-in-law, blamed their daughter-in-law, and went to tell petty tales: one put the sheets upstairs, or some other such thing. Fine—but confess your own sins, including the sins of your youth. Confess your sins of the flesh. Confess the ways you have deceived your husband or your wife. Confess the injustices you have committed, the plots of land you seized from the weakest member of your family, and the other things you have done. Say these things; confess them. Christ already knows them. Why are you telling me, “Yesterday she put the sheets upstairs, and you know what my daughter-in-law is like, and my mother-in-law did this”? Are these the sins you need to confess? Speak of the grave sins, so they can be removed—the sins that bind you, that lie beneath the surface. They are like the rocky ground in the parable of the sower: the seed goes down, but because it has no moisture...

It withers away. Confess those things so that you may be delivered. Stand before the Lord with a humble spirit and ask for the strength to make restitution before you leave this world: “My God, add days to my life so that I may make a beginning of metanoia, of repentance. My God, give me strength to repair the injustices I have committed: when I defrauded the state, defrauded the Social Insurance Foundation, defrauded the bank, defrauded the tax office, and stole in so many other ways. For You said, ‘You shall not steal.’ You did not tell me that I must not steal from the small but may steal from the powerful.” Who among us is pure, my beloved, able to behold Christ and stand before Him? The fact that He does not cast down fire to consume us is due to His goodness and patient endurance. It is not due to anything in us—take heed of that. And now God has granted us once again to celebrate Christmas and to stand before this great feast, which proclaims, “Peace on earth, goodwill among men.”

Let us take heed. The Lord came because of the sins of the world. He once gave a beautiful answer to a great Father of the Church who was counted worthy to travel to Bethlehem and venerate Him there. Falling prostrate, the Father said, “What can I give You? What can I offer? What can I do in return for what You have done for me?” And the answer came: “Offer Me your sins, Jerome. I want nothing else.” This is what moves Heaven. If it were possible, and if I had the strength to hear confessions at this very hour, I would take shiploads of sins out of this place—whole shiploads, not merely one or two. For we try, in our own way, to obtain a blessing by stealth so that we may receive Holy Communion without having repented as fully and properly as we should. This too has become an art.

Therefore, just as we seek a good physician for the body—a good cardiologist, internist, dentist, ear, nose, and throat specialist, ophthalmologist, and so forth—we must also seek an experienced spiritual father and accept the appropriate penances he assigns us. Instead, we look for weak spiritual fathers, men who do not themselves fulfill what they ought, and we go to them. The other day in Athens I met a highly educated gentleman. We were discussing a particular matter, and I said, “My dear man, that is a sin.” He replied, “I went to my spiritual father, and he said there was nothing wrong with it.” I said, “Forgive me, but do you yourself know that it is a sin?” “Yes,” he answered, “but my spiritual father...” Since you know it is a sin, it follows that you are looking for a spiritual father who does not know it. Thus the saying applies to you: “If the blind leads the blind...”

“Both will fall into a pit.” I have met women who have only one child between the two of them as a couple. “Why do you not have another?” “My spiritual father told me not to.” What do you expect? He does not have children either, and that is precisely why he cannot judge your situation. Yet you chose him as your spiritual father. If he were treating your body, would you choose him as your physician? You would not. But now you have found someone who permits you to receive Holy Communion once, twice, or three times a year. Were you receiving any more frequently before? What has he done for you now? Has he really helped you at all? He has done nothing for you. Yes, this is who we are. We are cunning, and we search for someone who measures up to our own standards. But the Lord above is just. He sees and says, “You wicked man, I will bind the two of you together,” and what I said earlier will be fulfilled.

So, do we believe that Christ came because of sins, and that Christmas means giving up our sins? Then we must give Him our sins. Let no one celebrate Christmas this year while clinging to sin. We must put into practice the Church’s petitions for peace. When the Church opens her doors and the deacon raises the end of his orarion in his hand, he says to the people, “In peace, let us pray to the Lord.” If we are not at peace with our fellow human beings, we cannot pray to the Lord. “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” And if we are not at peace with Heaven, neither can we pray. Both kinds of peace are necessary. We must make peace with God.

What makes a person an enemy of God is sin. The partition set between humanity and God is sin. When Christ came into the world and was crucified on Golgotha, the first miracle that took place at Golgotha—forgive me, in Solomon’s Temple—was that the veil was torn from top to bottom. That veil was a type, a foreshadowing, of sin. As Christ was crucified on Golgotha, the veil was torn, and so humanity could once again commune with God. The iconostasis that stands in the Church today is also a type of sin. Yet it has what is called the Beautiful Gate, and whoever is able to enter through this gate can commune with his God. On one side stands the new Eve, and on the other the new Adam.

The first Eve and the first Adam had closed that partition and shut humanity outside, far from God. The new Eve comes and obeys where the first Eve disobeyed. The new Adam comes and obeys where the old Adam disobeyed. Through their obedience, these two set things right, open the gate once more, and unite humanity with God. The Most Holy Theotokos said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Our Lord said, “Not My will, but Yours, O Lord,” and He was crucified and opened the way. Therefore, whenever a person sins, he goes and closes that door. Whoever puts his sins in order communes with the world within, with the Holy of Holies. He communes—he communes with the Holy Chalice.

It is a divine communion with Christ Himself through the fire. The person partakes of His Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. In this way he fulfills the conditions, takes the ticket in his hand, and enters through this Beautiful Gate. It is not called the Beautiful Gate because it is physically beautiful. It is called beautiful because of the purpose it serves. For the person who will not make peace with God, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, so as to be saved by Christ—and who does not receive the Body and Blood of Christ, given for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life—for that person it is not a Beautiful Gate. It is a closed gate, because he has placed sin there and refuses to let it go. That is why, when the priest has finished distributing Holy Communion, he says to Christ our God:

“Save, O God, Your people”—those who received Holy Communion—“and bless Your inheritance”—those who received Holy Communion. Not those sitting in the stalls, nor those sitting there passing judgment: “Didn’t he receive Communion just the other day? Why did he go up for Holy Communion?” Did he take anything from your share? Do you understand? You go and sanctify yourself, and leave aside the mockery and ridicule. He had the courage to go forward because God called him, and if he has the fear of God, he then steps aside. But the godless man feels no fear. Instead, he mocks and sits there discussing what someone else is doing. The one who received Holy Communion is an heir, because he becomes a brother of Christ. For Christ says, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” Having become a brother of Christ, he is a fellow heir of God and has a rightful share in the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven. That is why it is called the Beautiful Gate.”

So if a person happens to fall into some sin, but immediately hastens, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, to ask Christ for mercy and removes that sin from the way, then receives Holy Communion and enters into communion with Christ through Holy Communion, for that person the gate is truly beautiful. Through it, the person is brought into the Kingdom of Heaven. For Christ said plainly, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” And again, “I will raise him up at the last day.” “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has life in himself.” Holy Communion is life. “He who does not eat My flesh and drink My blood has no life in himself.” He may look well, dance, leap about, build things...

He has girlfriends and friends; they wish him many happy returns, and he wishes them the same. But he has no life. He has natural life, which animals and birds also possess. He does not have the spiritual life that a human being ought to have, the life given only by Christ in Baptism and, subsequently, in Holy Communion. Yes, then, these two fundamental things are necessary. If Christ came for the sins of the world, then here they are, Lord—give Him your sins. Stop relying on your charitable deeds. Do not begin by preparing to give a few coins somewhere. That does not count before God. First give Him your sins, and afterward give whatever God illumines you to give, if you have the means and desire. As long as you have not given Him your sins, “the mercy of a sinner is like an unclean spring.” God has no need of your sinful money, nor does God want you to deceive yourself.

Do not delude yourself into thinking that your salvation lies behind your charitable deeds when, in fact, your perdition remains there. Your salvation does not lie in your charity. Your salvation lies in your metanoia—your repentance—in your humble mind, your confession, and your Holy Communion. These create the conditions for your entrance into Paradise. People with good works have gone to Hell. The Pharisee and the elder brother of the Prodigal Son did not enter. People without works did enter: the Publican entered, the Prodigal Son entered, and the thief on the right entered. People without works entered Paradise, while people with works did not enter Paradise. The best combination is...

Faith and works. That is the best combination: neither works without faith nor faith without works. Yet if matters come to such a pass that you are to be saved as through fire, it is better to have Christ as your ticket than to stand upon your works, because your works cannot present you in the Kingdom of Heaven. God does not receive or acknowledge you on their account. He looks to see the blood of His Son. I do not know whether you ever read the New Testament, or whether you remember Pharaoh’s tenth plague. What was it, and what effect did it have upon the children of Israel? Pharaoh’s tenth plague was this: the Hebrews were to take a lamb, slaughter it, collect its blood in a basin, and with that blood...

They were to strike the upper lintel and both doorposts of their houses. For that night an angel of the Lord would pass through and slay every firstborn of the Egyptians, from animals to human beings. Wherever the angel saw blood, he would not enter. This is what the Hebrews did.

They sprinkled their houses with blood. When morning dawned, all the Egyptians were in mourning. Those who had children had dead children, and those without children had dead animals. Not one of the Hebrews suffered anything. Not one Hebrew household was in mourning. What protected them?

The blood of the lamb that was upon their houses. And what is the blood of the lamb? It is the blood of Christ that protects a person from the destroying sword of the Archangel—the blood of Christ. But the blood of Christ must be received worthily, following metanoia and confession, not merely as part of exchanging holiday greetings. For during these days, both we in Athens and you here will see—as we ourselves see—people who have no relationship with the Church entering the Church. They often come with their hands behind their backs, holding a bread ring in one hand and a newspaper in their pocket. They enter through one door, receive Holy Communion, go out through the other, and leave. Then they return again the following year.

They come again at Pascha, or again at the Dormition in August. These people do not know what they are doing. This is not preparation. Preparation means a humble mind, acknowledgment of one’s sinfulness, metanoia, and confession to the priest appointed to receive it, whether he himself is good or not. For God has not made our salvation depend upon the purity and holiness of the clergy. Is the clergyman a Judas? Did Judas not work miracles? Does the Gospel say that Judas was deprived of grace because he was wicked? It says this nowhere. “God does not ordain all men, but He works through all.” If the priest is not faithful, if he is not good and fails to live according to his ministry, that is to his own account.

It deprives me of nothing. I will receive the fullness of grace; I will receive forgiveness and be sanctified. But tomorrow he will hear Christ say, “Depart from Me, worker of lawlessness.” My own account is in order. Let no one be deceived and say, “You know, the clergy...” I know that the clergy does not sin; an individual clergyman sins, but the clergy as an institution does not. And if you want me to help you understand, I suggest that you read chapter twelve of Numbers in the Old Testament. There you will find Miriam, the sister of Moses, and Aaron—his two siblings—accusing, slandering, and speaking spitefully about Moses’ Ethiopian wife because he had not asked their permission before taking her. And Miriam was struck with leprosy. She was leprous from head to toe.

Aaron, although he joined her in saying these things and accusing Moses’ wife, was not struck with leprosy. They understood that this had happened because of their accusation, so they fell before Moses and begged him to ask God for her deliverance. Moses entreated God, but God imposed a canon, a rule of correction. “No,” He said, “I will not cleanse her yet. She will remain outside the camp for one week, out in the fields, as the commandment requires, and then she will be cleansed.” And so it happened. But Aaron was not struck with leprosy, although he too had made accusations. Why was Aaron not struck with leprosy? Because he was the high priest. And high priests are not subject to leprosy, so that the people may learn this lesson and not be deceived into thinking that a priest or high priest must be a saint before they may receive antidoron from his hands. And I take this opportunity to say: who could be holier than Christ?

Judas received the bread from the hands of Christ, and Satan entered into him. Therefore, the issue is not whether the priest or high priest is a saint. The issue is who you and I are when we approach. That is the issue; let us not be deceived. Can you find a saintly priest? Then find one. If you cannot, attend to your salvation with the priest who is there, do not discuss it any further, and do not be deceived. Above all, do not remain far from the Church, because only Satan will gain from that, while you will suffer the loss. I say this to help those who make supposed excuses, claiming that the clergy are at fault and that this is why they do not attend, while demanding saintly spiritual fathers and saintly priests. Then offer your own child. Why do you not offer your child? Do priests come in tins, so that we can order them? Why do you not offer yourself? Why do you, who have a good family, who do not need to stretch out your hand in need, who are wealthy, and so forth—why do you not offer yourself?

One day you will give an account; Christ will ask an account of you. How could you demand something from others when you yourself offered nothing? How, in your opinion, is the Church to remain upright? You never went to Church and never took an interest. And if the Church gives blood, then blood is what this calling requires. You do not even do the things that we do merely in words. So if you think that something here is causing you to stumble, pay attention during these days. Let no one celebrate Christmas this year while holding on to sin—no one. For Christmas with sins is inconceivable; consequently, such a person will not celebrate Christmas at all. No matter whether he receives money, gifts, or a holiday from work, and no matter what else he does, he will not celebrate Christmas. If Christ came for the sins of the world; if Christ came as our peace, as the Church says, “For He is our peace”—Christ Himself—and, “Peace on earth,” then do we have peace?

Are we on good terms with everyone? Are we preparing for Christmas? Do we exchange greetings with everyone? Are we speaking to everyone? Have the lawsuits been withdrawn? Have these disputes stopped? If so, then proceed toward Bethlehem. If not, where are you going? Where are you going? You are a Christian, and I am a Christian. Use the thermometer called forgiveness and see what temperature it gives you. Do you lack the strength to forgive? Then you are not a Christian. Our Leader, upon the Cross, forgave those who crucified Him. The Protomartyr Stephen, during the first stoning, forgave those who stoned him and even begged that this sin not be held against them. For many times we also...

We may not demand anything directly from our fellow human beings, but we leave them to receive their punishment from God. Since we ourselves cannot gouge out their eye deeply enough, we send them to God so that He, who can do it, will gouge it out for us. That is not Christianity—no. “May you not even receive punishment from the Lord”: that is Christianity. Saint Dionysios, whose feast we celebrate today, forgave and concealed the murderer of his own brother. And where are we going? Someone threw dirty water down from above, and so we stopped speaking to her. A hen slipped through and ruined a flowerpot, and we went straight to court. Where are we going, my friends? Where will we appear? What will we do? “But I have my dignity. I will not tolerate anyone offending me.” Really?

Do you insist upon your dignity? Know that when you seek to vindicate your worldly dignity, you will lose your Christian dignity. And once you have lost your Christian dignity, what use is worldly dignity in this deceitful world? The certificates issued by the world are accepted nowhere—not even at the grocery store, much less in the Kingdom of Heaven.

“I put him in his place.” Very well. But did you leave your own place at the same time? For in order to put another person in his place, you often step out of your own. Rather than have you or me step out of our proper place, it is better not to put the other person in his. Let it go. But then pride comes and will not allow it, while at the same time I still claim to be a Christian and a decent human being. An elder was once asked, “Geronta, how can we tell whether a society, whether the world, is making progress?” He replied, “My children, when you see the steps of the churches worn down from use...

And the courtyards and steps of the law courts overgrown with grass.”

Today the opposite is happening. If you go to the law courts, you will see that the steps have been worn down by several inches from people constantly going up and down. But the steps of the churches are still brand-new. Do you understand how Christians remain entangled in court cases for years? Over what issues? Material things.

Stones, walls, and fields. “But should I let him take my field?” Is it yours? I am not telling you to let him take it; I am asking you whether it is yours. “Of course it is mine.” You are mistaken. It is neither yours nor mine. It is His.

“It is mine.” It belongs to Him—to the One above. “Today it is yours, tomorrow it is mine, but it never truly belongs to anyone.” It is His. If you think of it that way, it will be much easier to free yourself from the place where Satan has caught you and has been making a fool of you for so many years, while you think you are in the right and wait to obtain justice in this world. If possible, a person should not insist on getting justice in this world. “But am I supposed to let him carry on?” Are you the one who will let him? Will the One above let him? “But if I let him, he will rob me; he will do this and that to me.” What do you mean? Do you not hear what Paul says? Does he say, “Punish the disorderly, so that they do not become conceited”? Paul says no such thing. That is your own invention.

He says, “Admonish the disorderly”; nowhere does he say, “Punish the disorderly.” But understand this: if you were right with God, would you have such a temptation? Can you tell me? Did Saint Spyridon have shepherds? No, he did not. Did anyone steal from him? Did anyone devour what belonged to him? No one stole from him or took what was his, because he had another Guardian above. Are you right with God? Perfect. And someone has come to wrong you? If he received permission to wrong you, then you are paying something off. You have some old account outstanding; you are settling some debt. Do not deceive yourself. One night, two men went to steal from Saint Spyridon. He had neither a shepherd nor...

...dogs. His sheep would go out by themselves, graze, and return on their own. They never damaged anything belonging to anyone else. People would say, “Saint Spyridon’s sheep are passing by.” One night, two men went to steal from him. They entered the fold, but some invisible power seized them, and they remained there until morning, unable to leave. When the Saint came in the morning, he found them standing there. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “How did you spend the night? Why did you come here? Are you not ashamed? You are strong young men; go and work,” and so on. He admonished them as much as he could. “Do not do this again. You see that God exists. You see that there is Someone else watching you. Even if I am not watching you, there is Someone who sees at night and sees what is done in secret.” He told them many things, while they stood with their heads bowed. Then he said, “Each of you take a ram for your trouble, and go.”

He gave each of them a ram, and they left. What do you think? Did those men ever go stealing again? No, they did not. We think we have been wronged, you know. I know. But He knows too, and I do not know all that He knows. One day I was waiting for a car outside my door. A little farther down, across the street, was a man who was both a grocer and a butcher. I got into the taxi, and he signaled that he wanted to ride with me. “Come along, Mr. Antonis,” I said. “You are doing me a favor,” he replied, “because I have a court hearing, and I have to be there at nine.” I said, “I hope it turns out well.” “And you should know, Mr. Panagopoulos,” he said, “that I am innocent.” I told him, “Perhaps on some other occasion you were not innocent, and now you are paying for that.”

“I am innocent,” he insisted. “Do you know what happened?” “Tell me,” I said, “and get it off your chest.” “I had hung up the meat,” he said, “and displayed the prices. I removed the price tag from one piece and pinned it on another so that I could cut some meat from it. But afterward I forgot to put it back. Then the police came and found one price where the other should have been. So you understand what that means,” he said. “Perhaps a fine of two thousand or two and a half thousand.” I said, “Mr. Antonis, you are paying off some old debts. On some other occasion you escaped the consequences, and now you are paying for it. And to comfort you before we arrive, let me tell you something.” So I told him the following story, which I will now tell you, and then I shall finish. Once, some wicked men set their sights on a priest and had him imprisoned. When the priest entered the prison, the other prisoners approached him and asked, “What did you do, Father?” “Nothing, my children.” “That is impossible.” “Nothing, my children!”

“So you came here for nothing? You alone are here without cause? No, no. All of us—how did you come here, Father? Every one of us deserved to be imprisoned.” “I did nothing, my children. They brought me here unjustly.” Eventually the conversation ended, and he went to sleep. As the priest lay there, he kept sighing deeply. Around midnight, a tall man rose, came over to him, and said, “Tell me, Father: are you really here unjustly?” “Yes, my child,” he replied, “unjustly.” “Do you know what you are paying for now?” “What am I paying for?” the priest asked. “Do you remember, when you were young, going to the market one day? An old woman had a heifer tied up, and the heifer damaged one of your sacks. You became angry and set the heifer loose. The old woman lost it; others took it and slaughtered it for food. Well, now you are paying for that blood and for the old woman’s tears.” When he awoke in the morning, the priest said, “My children, am I here for nothing? No, I deserve to be here.” “Did I not tell you,” the prisoner said, “that no one comes here for nothing?” “So, Mr. Antonis,” I told him, “you too must now be paying for something like that.”

The same thing happens to us. If we look back and ask why we are being wronged, why this has happened and why that has happened, we will find our sins. And when we seek to put our sins and injustices in order, everything else will also be put in order. So, my beloved, without taking up any more of your time, if we want this year’s Christmas to be a true Christmas of God, take care to make peace with God and with other people. Confess your sins and be reconciled in love with everyone. Offer them God’s greeting. Write to them, telephone them—do whatever you think best. Then go to Bethlehem to hear the words, “Peace on earth, goodwill among men”—peace in this world and in the world to come.

Ράντισαν τα σπίτια τους με αίμα. Το πρωί ξημέρωσε, όλοι οι Αιγύπτιοι, τόσο, είχαν κηδεία. Άλλοι είχαν παιδιά, όσοι είχαν παιδιά νεκρά, και όσοι δεν είχαν παιδιά είχαν ζώα ψόφια. Κανένας δεν έπαθε τίποτα από τους Εβραίους. Κανένα σπίτι δεν είχε πένθος από τους Εβραίους. Ποιος τους φύλαξε;

Πήρε ο Ιούδας από τα χέρια του Χριστού το ψωμίον και ο σατανάς εισήλθε εις αυτόν. Άρα δεν είναι το θέμα αν είναι Άγιος ο ιερεύς, ο αρχιερεύς. Είναι το θέμα ποιος είσαι εσύ κι εγώ που πηγαίνουμε. Αυτό είναι το θέμα και μην πλανώμεθα. Μπορείς να βρεις Άγιον; Βρες. Άμα δεν μπορείς, κάνε τη δουλειά σου με αυτόν που είναι και μην συζητήσεις παρακάτω και μην πλανάσαι. Μόνο μην μείνεις μακριά της Εκκλησίας, γιατί θα κερδίσει μόνο ο Σατανάς και θα ζημιωθείς. Αυτό έχω να πω για να βοηθήσω αυτούς οι οποίοι βρίσκουν δήθεν δικαιολογίες ότι φταίει ο Κλήρος, γι' αυτό δεν πηγαίνουν και ζητάνε Αγίους, Αγίους Πνευματικούς και Αγίους Ιερείς. Πήγαινε εσύ, δώσε το παιδί σου. Γιατί δεν το δίνεις, το παιδί σου; Σε κονσέρβα είναι οι παπάδες, τους κάνουμε παραγγελία; Γιατί δεν δίνεις τον εαυτό σου; Γιατί δεν δίνεις εσύ που έχεις καλή οικογένεια, που δεν έχεις την ανάγκη να τείνεις το χέρι, που είσαι πλούσιος και λοιπά; Γιατί δεν δίνεις;

Δώσεις λόγο μια μέρα, θα σου ζητήσει λόγο ο Χριστός. Πώς ζητούσες από τους άλλους, εσύ δεν προσέφερες τίποτα; Πώς η Εκκλησία θα είναι ορθή κατά τη γνώμη σου; Δεν πήγες ποτέ σου στην Εκκλησία και δεν ενδιαφέρθηκες. Και πως αν η Εκκλησία αίμα δίδει, αίμα θέλει γι' αυτή την περίπτωση. Δεν κάνεις ούτε λόγια πράγματα τα οποία κάνουμε εμείς. Αν λοιπόν νομίζετε ότι εδώ κάπου σκοντάφτεται, προσέξετέ τα αυτές τις ημέρες. Κανένας με αμαρτία Χριστούγεννα φέτο, κανένας. Διότι εφόσον Χριστούγεννα με αμαρτίες δεν εννοούνται, κατά συνέπεια δεν θα κάνει Χριστούγεννα. Όχι λεφτά αν πάρει, όχι δώρα αν πάρει, όχι αργία, ό,τι θέλει να κάνει, Χριστούγεννα δεν θα κάνει. Αν ο Χριστός ήρθε για τις αμαρτίες του κόσμου, αν ο Χριστός ήρθε, ειρήνη ημίν, όπως λέγει και η Εκκλησία, «Αυτός γαρ εστίν η ειρήνη ημών», ο Χριστός, και «επί γης ειρήνη». Έχουμε ειρήνη εμείς;

Ζητάμε τίποτα από τους συνανθρώπους μας, αλλά τους αφήνουμε να το βρουν από τον Θεό. Διότι εμείς δεν μπορούμε να τους βγάλουμε βαθιά το μάτι και τους στέλνουμε στον Θεό να τους το βγάλει εκείνος που μπορεί. Αυτό δεν είναι χριστιανισμός, όχι. «Ούτε από τον Κύριο να το βρείτε», αυτός είναι χριστιανισμός. Ο σημερινός Άγιος Διονύσιος συνεχώρησε και έκρυψε τον φονιά του αδερφού του. Πού πάμε εμείς; Την αξίαλτοσε Ντόνια από πάνω και της έκοψε την καλημέρα. Τρύπωσε η κότα και πήγε και χάλασε τη γλάστρα, εμπήκε στο αυτό και πήγαμε στο αυτόφωρο. Πού πάμε, ρε παιδιά; Πού θα παρουσιαστούμε; Τι θα κάνουμε; «Μα έχω αξιοπρέπεια, δεν δέχομαι να με πειράξουν». Σοβαρά;
