Summary

The Triodion leads Christians through three stages—from the Publican and Pharisee, through Great Lent, and into Holy Week toward Golgotha and the Resurrection. Baptism makes believers children of God by grace, while repentance, confession, and Holy Communion restore their living relationship with Christ after sin. Cheesefare Week and the Lenten fast train Christians in obedience, preparing them gradually for ascetic struggle and warning against self-will, careless indulgence, and unworthy reception of the Eucharist.

Then, by the grace of our Lord, we set out on a path that leads toward Golgotha and Pascha. That is why the title of our subject is “Walking Toward Pascha.” It is a road we have traveled before, as many times as the years each of us has lived. Yet I do not know whether we have paid as much attention as we should to this road—to what it presents, what it calls to mind, and what it teaches.

Alongside the other efforts made from this pulpit to enlighten the listeners and remind them of matters concerning their souls, I thought that this evening, with the love you have shown and with the blessing of the fathers and of the Holy Metropolis as a whole, I might share a few thoughts with you. In this way I may remind both myself and those who are forgetful, because this road teaches us many things, and a person can be greatly benefited by it if he pays attention.

When people are about to set out on a journey, they consider the road ahead, especially when their destination is far away. Our own road begins with the opening of the Triodion. Our journey begins with the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee.

It ends, of course, after two stopping places and two changes of scene. It ends on the night of the Resurrection, at cockcrow. Beginning with the Publican and the Pharisee, we come to our first stopping place on Cheesefare Sunday. From there, on Clean Monday, we begin a more difficult road, and we stop on the Saturday of Lazarus. There the scene changes once again. We regroup a little on Palm Sunday and enter upon a narrow road—indeed, I would dare call it a mere footpath—which leads to Golgotha and from there to the Resurrection. The Triodion, then, unfolds in three stages, and this road we are discussing, on which we walk toward Pascha, presents three distinct things. Has anyone noticed anything along it? What has he seen on this road? What does he see, and what does he encounter? What signs does he see there? What new things, which he does not see during the rest of the year? I do not know. Perhaps everyone gathered here...

has noticed them, though some perhaps have not. Those who have noticed them will forgive me for repeating them, and the others should pay attention to what I would like to say. I want to speak about the things we encounter along this road. Now that we have reached the Fourth Sunday of Lent, I ask myself, and I ask you as well: Have you noticed anything up to this point? What have you learned that you did not learn last year? I think we should have paid attention to the starting point, the first step, where the Church placed the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee before us: two men, one of whom was lost and the other saved. We should also have paid attention to the second Sunday, where the Church placed the second step before us—the parable...

of the Prodigal Son. There too we find two men: one was lost and the other was saved. And it was not the Prodigal Son who was lost. The Prodigal Son did what he did, but then he repented and was saved. It was the elder brother who was lost. Has anyone reflected on that? So what do we see in these first two parables? Two men who were sinners in the eyes of the world were saved, while two men regarded as righteous by the world were lost.

Two men who were righteous in the eyes of the world were lost. “Then God is unjust!”

people cry out. The Pharisee had not stolen, dishonored anyone, or committed fornication. He fasted twice a week. He gave alms and paid his tithes, yet he remained outside. Yes, indeed, he remained outside. The elder brother, who had never disobeyed a commandment of his father—and, by extension, of God—and who had served him so faithfully, remained outside. Yes, he too remained outside. But the other men entered: the Publican, who had sucked the blood of the people, and the Prodigal Son, who had lived it up, spent his life with women, and done whatever he pleased. Does that not seem strange to you? Did you notice it? What did you see there?

They displayed their works, but Christ did not accept them, and they remained outside. Yet the man who beat his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner,” and the other who said, “I have sinned against heaven and before you,” both entered. What does Christ mean to teach through this? Something fundamental. These are the first two steps on the road leading toward Pascha. Listen, then, in simple words.

Salvation by works. There is no such thing as salvation by works. Does anyone know what another person does or what he secretly harbors within himself? I do not know; I wish I did. What, then, is there? If a good person performs works that bring relief to another person’s suffering and does other such things, what does that mean? How can it be true that there is no salvation by works, and that these two gentlemen are shut outside? There is salvation through Christ.

There is no salvation by works; there is salvation through Christ. Isaiah said long ago, “All our righteousness is like a filthy rag.” If a person could be saved by his works, God would have sent an angel from on high to sound a trumpet and proclaim, “People, do good works! Come, and I will bring you into Paradise.” But He said no such thing. He came Himself, was put to death, and shed His blood so that man might return to Paradise. Gather together all the works of every righteous person, from righteous Abel to the last righteous person at the consummation of the age, and place them all in a single file.

Even if one man possessed all the good works in the world, they would not wipe away a single sin. Yet some people believe that through their good works they will erase their sins and enter Paradise. No, my friend! What, then, should we do? Someone may ask, “Should we stop doing good works?” I am not saying that. You should do good works from morning until night and from night until morning—everything you can, according to the strength you have. But never trust that your works will take you into Paradise. A person’s works secure him a place in Paradise, but they do not grant him entrance into Paradise. To enter...

you need a ticket. If you have no ticket, you will not enter. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses us from every sin, not any righteousness of our own. Man is a traveler, journeying from this temporal life into eternity. He was not made merely for this passing excursion. The ways of the world tell us that we are permanent inhabitants of the earth. The Christian does not believe that. The Christian believes he is only a temporary resident on earth. He believes that he did not come here simply to live; he came here to die, and through death to live. The Christian’s true life lies beyond the grave. It is for that Kingdom that the Christian lives.

That life has no end. A Christian in his right mind does not live for this world; he lives for the world to come. If he does not believe that there is life beyond the grave, that this is his destination, and that he will ultimately arrive there, then he may as well cast away his reason at once. This present life would not be worth living, for it holds so much pain, so much bitterness, so much evil, dishonor, and corruption. What consoles him and keeps him steadfast is the life beyond the grave. If, then, a person departs relying only on salvation by his works, as these two gentlemen would have done, he will remain outside, in the vestibule. Man, born of woman, as Job says, drinks in lawlessness like water. Besides the stain he inherits—the ancestral sin—he has his own sins as well.

David declared from the beginning, “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” A person must therefore acknowledge this. But we justify ourselves. We issue certificates of good standing for others and for ourselves. We say, “We are all right. If only others were like us! Do you know what kind of man my husband is? Do you know what kind of woman my wife is? A Christian woman! Do you know what my grandmother was?” Do you know? If I already know, why are you telling me? What is this certificate you are issuing to me? Do you want me to tell you that you will go to Paradise? Your certificate and mine are accepted nowhere. You must ask someone else. Do not ask yourself, and do not ask other people, “What do people say about me?”

There are four opinions about every person. You are hearing me for the first time. Some of you send me to Hell, and others to Paradise. That is nonsense. You can send me neither to the one nor to the other. At home, my coworkers, my family, and the others who know me have a different opinion of me, because they know another side of my life.

You see me here only for a moment, and if asked, you issue one certificate about me. That certificate is accepted nowhere. I know my own life. I also know the hidden things that my children, my wife, and my coworkers do not know. If asked, I too issue a certificate about myself. But that certificate is accepted nowhere either. Whose judgment, then, is accepted? The judgment of Him who was crucified. Your opinion does not decide the matter.

Neither does the opinion of others, nor does my own opinion. His judgment is the one that matters.

What does Christ say about me at this very moment? That is what should occupy me; that is what should concern me. What the world says, what the newspapers write, whether they accuse me or praise me—all that is nonsense. A reasonable person never even takes such things into account. When I see a Pharisee who appears perfect being shut outside, and the elder son, the brother of the Prodigal, failing to enter, I begin to be afraid. So it is not enough simply to do what the priest says and perform good deeds. Do good, but do not place your hope in the good you do. Christ is the One who opened Paradise. Christ issues the tickets. Since you are a traveler, you will be properly prepared for your journey if you have both luggage and a ticket. Many people help us pack luggage.

Good works—suitcases upon suitcases upon suitcases. They intend to travel tomorrow. But if I must leave for Athens tomorrow, can I travel merely by taking my suitcases when I have no ticket? Can I say, “Sir, we have suitcases”? He will answer, “Yes, but bring your ticket along with your suitcases.” People without suitcases have traveled, such as the thief from the Cross, the Publican, and the Prodigal Son. But people with suitcases and no ticket have not traveled. Do we understand? Therefore, we must do what is good. This is what the first two steps taught us when this season opened its gates to lead us toward Golgotha. This is what He taught who, at the end of this season, at the summit of the whole journey, will stretch out His hands like this. This is what He taught: Do what is good.

I will tell you. What is Christ called? He is called the Savior. What is His Cross called? Life-giving. What is His wounded side called? The life-giving, wounded side of the Lord. What is the Most Holy Cross called? Life-giving. So the issue is life—not natural life, which birds, livestock, and dogs also possess, but spiritual life. For man has two kinds of life and two kinds of death. The body lives when it is united with the soul, and the soul lives when it is united with Christ, with God. When the soul does not have Christ, it is living yet dead; it is, so to speak, a walking cemetery. This is what our Christ said about the elder brother and the younger brother:

that...

“Your brother was dead and is alive again.” He had been feasting with his girlfriends, far from his father’s house—far, we might say, from the Church. Such a person is living yet dead. Do you remember the man who once asked permission to go and bury his father, but our Christ did not let him? Someone might say, “How harsh! He would not let the man go and bury his own father.” But what did He tell him? “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.” What a funeral procession! There are dead men wearing neckties in your village who will bury your father. You, come and follow Me. Do you see how many walking cemeteries there are even here in the church tonight? Many—very many. Everyone who has no relationship with Christ is living yet dead. And Christ waits for him to repent, to return, and to entrust to Him both his salvation and the bringing of his soul to life.

“Bestowing life upon those in the tombs.” Christ, the Giver of Life, descended even into the tombs, and there too He brought the dead to life. The question, then, is what relationship we have with Christ. That is the question. Many people take the beautiful teachings of our Church and say, “Ah, I too will beat my breast like the Publican and say, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner,’ and I shall be saved.” That is why the Church added the second Sunday, with the account of the Prodigal Son. It contains metanoia—repentance; it contains confession; and it contains the changing of his garment: “Bring out the first robe for him.” Then the father brought him to the fatted calf, so that he might receive his blood and be brought to life. This points to the way of the Mysteries. Thus, in these two great parables, the whole teaching is brought to completion.

Pay attention to what comes next: the Sunday of the Last Judgment, Meatfare Sunday. While others were celebrating Carnival with dances and revelry—for the devil too had opened his own Triodion and was calling the world in that direction—we came here to listen. Christ divided the world into two great categories. Ordinary people, not some exceptional elite, inherit the Kingdom. Therefore, to inherit the Kingdom...

you must understand two things. First, it is not a matter of earning wages. He did not say, “Bring Me your works, and I will pay you what you have earned.” He said, “Come, you blessed, and inherit.” If someone dies abroad and the newspapers announce that they are seeking his heir, what happens? You go to the municipal offices, obtain proof of your title, present the will, and receive the inheritance. It is therefore a matter of having the title of an heir. How, then, does a believer acquire the title by which he may inherit the Kingdom of Heaven? The Kingdom belongs to the Father. What claim could I possibly have to it? Christ, through His blood, replaces the blood of Adam flowing through man’s veins. He gives him the blood of Christ and makes him a royal son, entitled to inherit the Kingdom together with Christ. God has one Son by nature. If we are to be called children of the Father...

we must have Christ as our Brother. If Christ is not our Brother, God is not our Father. Even some of our theologians say that all people are children of God. They are not children of God at all; they are God’s creatures, His created beings. “But as many as received Christ, to them He gave the right to become children of God.” How can those who have not received Christ be children of God? Through Baptism, then, you become a brother of Christ. He gives you His blood to drink and changes your blood. By grace you become a brother of Christ and, consequently, a child of God. Are people who have no relationship with Christ children of God? Why, what does Paul say in Galatians 4:4?

“When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive adoption as sons.” We had therefore lost that adoption along the paths of sin, in the persons of Adam and Eve.

A person who has not come to know Christ, who does not live in an organic union with Christ, and who has not received within himself this transfusion of royal blood from Christ cannot inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet even to the one who possesses these titles of kinship, He then says, “Listen: I do not want you to be hard-hearted. You believed and received Holy Communion—very well. But you must also do good. I was hungry—did you feed Me? When I suffered, did you come to Me? I was thirsty; I was in prison.” Christ requires these good works from His believer. The unbeliever either does not perform them or, even if he does, remains outside on the pavement, because he does not possess the ticket that grants entry. He does not have Christ, who opens the door to the Kingdom of Heaven. These are the lessons taught by the first three steps of this road,

the road that leads to the Kingdom of Heaven, taking man through the Passion, to Pascha and the Resurrection. And notice this as well: the Kingdom was closed, my dear friends. A curtain stood in the way. What was the first miracle when Christ was crucified? Christ was crucified outside Jerusalem, “outside the camp,” as Paul says. What was the first miracle that occurred? The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. At that very moment, while Christ was being crucified outside Solomon’s Temple and cried, “It is finished,” the veil of the temple split open and was torn from top to bottom. Sin is like the iconostasis you see here. The veil was the barrier, and when it was broken, it opened for us what is called the Beautiful Gate. The successor...

of the first Eve, who closed Paradise to us, is the Most Holy Theotokos, and the successor of Adam is our Christ, the New Adam, beneath the Cross. The first pair shut us outside through disobedience. The second pair opened Paradise to us and made for us this Beautiful Gate. Here the tickets are issued. The tickets to Paradise for Orthodox Christians are drawn up in Holy Confession, between the Christian and the innkeeper—the Orthodox priest. They are initialed in red ink and sealed in Holy Communion, here before the Beautiful Gate. From here, through the icon of the Platytera, people pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. Those who refuse reconciliation, who do not accept and do not believe in Christ,

will consequently remain in the vestibule. They have neither entry nor a ticket. “I am the door,” He says. “If anyone enters through Me, he will go in and out.” “I am the door; I am the way; I am the life; I am the light.” The definite article in each of these sayings—“the door,” “the way,” and so forth—shows that His person and His way are unique. So I return to my point: let us not rest our hope upon our works. We shall do good as long as our eyes remain open, but we who are baptized must look to our Christ for entry, through our metanoia—our repentance—and through Holy Confession. Christ did not bring the Prodigal into Paradise in his filthy garment, dressed in rags. He did not place him in the scene depicted in the icon raised above the Holy Table, beneath Saint Gregory the Theologian.

There above is our Christ, taking that filthy garment from him. I say this for those who, deceived by Satan, do not go and say, “I have sinned.” Perhaps they repent of certain sins, but they do not openly declare, “I have sinned”; that is, they do not confess. They repent and make a resolution, but no resolution has force until it is declared. You must therefore go to the appointed person and make your decision known. There, within Holy Confession, the garment will be changed. They will remove the filthy garment and clothe you in the first robe, the clean robe of your Baptism. You cast it off when the time came and you said, “I renounce You, Christ, and unite myself to you, Satan,” although when they gave you that white robe at your Baptism, you had said, “I renounce you, Satan, and unite myself to You, Christ.”

A person grows up—twelve, thirteen, fifteen years old—and it begins: you want your own way, your ego, the world, and all the rest. You turn your back on Christ and deny Him. Christ says, “My child, I want virginity.” But where is virginity now? Virginity is treated as an outdated convention. “I shall go with the devil, who does not want virginity. You want children? I shall go with the devil, who does not want children. You want fasting? I shall go with the devil, who does not want fasting.” Go wherever you think best. “I shall take from you the white garment I gave you at Baptism. If you ever repent and return, I shall keep it here for you and clothe you in it again.” A person must keep this scene before his eyes. Even if outwardly you appear spotless and dressed all in white, like a bride holding lilies as symbols of virginity and purity, if you remain far from Christ, this outward purity will not justify you in the eyes of God. Only metanoia—repentance—only Holy Confession,

only the words “I have sinned” disarm the justice of God and enable man to prevail. God allows Himself to be overcome—yes, overcome. Almighty God is overcome when man humbles himself and asks forgiveness. What, then, remains decisive? The return of the Prodigal. Never let that leave your nous, your spiritual mind. And let no one come here on Great Thursday or Great Saturday merely to receive a little golden morsel. Holy Communion does not only burn away sins; it can also burn souls. When there is humility, metanoia—repentance—Holy Confession, the proper disposition, and preparation, it burns away sins. But it also burns souls when received unworthily. As Paul writes specifically in the tenth chapter of his First Epistle to the Corinthians, many die. Why are there cancers, irrational passions, sudden accidents, and so forth? Because the Body and Blood of Christ are not received properly. These things are taught in the first part.

There, on Meatfare Sunday, the scene changes somewhat and prepares man for Cheesefare Week. Those who have not abstained from meat by then say, “One last Carnival celebration.” How can there be another “last Carnival”? Meatfare means farewell to meat. How many times can you bid farewell to meat? If you continue eating it, the whole thing is absurd. Yet modern man, for all his education, is so deficient in matters like these. It is Cheesefare Week! During this week the Church gives us a beautiful lesson, and I would like to remind you of it. What does the Church permit? Everything else. What does she forbid? Meat. “But can I eat the egg and not the hen?” someone objects.

“Can I consume milk, cheese, and butter from the sheep, yet not eat the lamb? Who has ever heard of such a thing?” And yet you can. This is how it must be. Why does the Church do this? She reminds you of two things. First, she wants to bring you gently down to Clean Monday. She does not want you to go directly from eating meat to fasting without oil. She gives you a week with dairy products and fish, which are lighter foods, so that you may enter the fast naturally. The second lesson is something else she wants to teach you, but you have never gone to church to hear it—not to Vespers and not to Matins. You arrive at church after the third bell or after the Gospel because you imagine that everything before that is for fools—or because you think yourself clever and remain under your blankets. That is what the devil tells you. A person who does not attend Vespers or Matins does not know the doctrine.

He may know the words, but he does not understand the meaning of the feast. The theme appointed for that Sunday is the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. Why were Adam and Eve expelled from Paradise? Because God told them in the garden, “You may indeed eat from all the trees, but from one tree you must not eat.”

“On the day you eat from that tree, you shall surely die.” If you stretch out your hand toward it, He says, you will die two deaths. And they ate from it. He says the same thing to us. My good people—forgive the expression—the day after tomorrow Adam is cast out of Paradise, and his disobedience becomes the reason why the Other One, whom you see on Great Friday, is crucified farther along the road. Why? Because God gave one command: they could eat from everything except one thing. Pay attention to this yourself, if you wish to enter Paradise.

And yet man refuses to obey.

A person refuses to abstain from meat. The Church has given us the same command: “Everything is yours—only abstain from meat.” Just as God told them, “Everything is yours—only...,” people now rebel against this command. This disobedience is the spiritual deception that caused God to be crucified—the disobedience of the first two human beings. If we believe that Christ came at the end of this season to be crucified and restore man to Paradise, how can we oppose Him and say, “What do You want? Say whatever You like. There is no Meatfare. I will invent my own senseless carnival and do as I please”? And at the same time, such a person flatters himself that he is religious. He is mistaken; he has not understood this. So he goes on drunk, reveling, fornicating, blaspheming, and committing adultery, and still calls that day Clean Monday—though by all his sins he turns the whole day into a filthy Monday. For the sins committed...

during Cheesefare, at the so-called final carnival, and on Clean Monday are not committed in such a way during the rest of the year—either in quantity or in the vileness of their character. I believe you are educated people of the twentieth century: you know, you see, you hear, and you look around you during these days. The Christian must understand the pattern of these provocations. After teaching him all this in the first part, the Church leads him into the second part. These are the things he encounters as he travels along the road. Have they not passed before us here? They have indeed. There is one road, and it contains all these things. You enter the first week. On Wednesday, it says, there is a Presanctified Liturgy; on Friday, another Presanctified Liturgy. What is this now? Did we not have it last year as well? Did you ask what it was? Did you go to Church and attend? Did you take part in the Presanctified Liturgy?

The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated because, during Great Lent, the full Divine Liturgy with the Eucharistic sacrifice is not celebrated except on Saturdays and Sundays. The Divine Liturgy is a joyful event; it is the Resurrection. For this reason, in principle, the Church does not permit such a celebration on the weekdays. Since this is a season of mourning, we cannot celebrate a joyful event.

But receiving Holy Communion only twice a week is not enough for us. Man needs more than that. So from Sunday we reserve the spiritual food already prepared, keeping it in the tabernacle upon the Holy Table, and we serve it every Wednesday and Friday in conjunction with Vespers. The Presanctified Liturgy is a service joined to Vespers, and the faithful who are struggling receive Holy Communion four times a week, so that they can persevere. For the warfare of the flesh and the spirit during these days of fasting is much fiercer in intensity and in every respect. Without a spiritual counterweight, a person cannot endure it. So, my brother, do you take part in the Presanctified Liturgies, or has it been so long that you do not even remember when you last received Holy Communion?

That is the question. “But we have Presanctified Liturgies.” Yes—if you receive Holy Communion. If you come merely to receive the antidoron that the priest has reserved, you could just as well have that at home. The point is whether you receive Holy Communion. Have you ever listened to what is said there? Have you heard its entrance hymn? Have you ever paid attention to it? What does that Liturgy say in place of the Cherubic Hymn? It is not the usual Cherubic Hymn, “We who mystically represent the Cherubim.” It says: “Now the powers of Heaven invisibly worship with us. For behold, the King of Glory enters. Behold, the mystical sacrifice, already accomplished, is escorted in. Let us draw near with faith and longing, that we may become partakers of eternal life.” Eternal life—we are to receive it with faith and longing.

The Holy Chalice is for you like your mother’s breast. Have you seen how infants nurse, how eagerly they seize their mother’s breast to drink the milk, as though they would devour it? Do you feel such desire, such longing?

The priest stands there and says to those who have neither fear of God nor faith, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near,” yet no one moves from his place. Have you no fear of God, and no faith either? Is that why you hide there? What is happening here? What have you come here for—simply to spend fifty minutes in Church?

Thus, along this road on which we are traveling, Great Lent reminds us of the necessity of receiving Holy Communion continually.

But we do not want to stop sinning, and that is precisely why we cannot come to receive Holy Communion. How can a mother whose hands drip with blood come forward to receive? How can a young man who does not preserve chastity or exercise self-restraint come to receive? How can a young woman who wanders here and there through the alleyways come to receive? And how can the businessman come in when he lies in his trade—whether by the measure, by the weight, or with his own mouth? How can he come while continuing to do such things? It is the sin we refuse to cut off that makes it difficult for us to draw near. Yet Holy Communion is necessary. The Church emphasizes this and sets it before us, and each person must consider it. Tomorrow, of course, you may say, “I did not know.” But Christ does not accept ignorance of the law. The civil authorities do not accept ignorance of the law; how much less will Christ accept it? Whether a person says he can or cannot—that is what Christ is concerned with.

There are, you know, some thirty-five or thirty-six opportunities to receive Holy Communion from the first Presanctified Liturgy through Palm Sunday. Yet there are people who, throughout their whole lives, have never come and cannot come, because they will not stop sinning. If they stop sinning, all the roads open before them—all of them. As long as we refuse to stop, there is tragedy. How can the Fathers instruct us to draw near more frequently so that we may be edified? There must be a transfusion of life from the Holy Chalice into us mortal human beings, so that we may become brothers and sisters of Christ. Above, behind the sanctuary, you will see the vine; at the center is the Mystical Supper, with vines on either side. What does this mean? Read the fifteenth chapter of John and you will see: “I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me bears much fruit.”

A branch remains upon the vine and draws from it all the vine’s properties—the sugar, the wine, and everything else. How can we receive Holy Communion only two or three times over all these years? How could we then have clusters of grapes, foliage, or fruit? How could that be possible? Let us not condemn those who make even a small effort to receive Holy Communion more frequently. And let us put an end to sin, for these days bring our sins to light. Another thing a person encounters in the first week is fasting—strict fasting. But it is not fasting if I merely stop eating meat and then consume three servings of beans with a hundred drams of oil, half a kilo of wine, and a whole loaf of bread. Most Holy Theotokos, help us! Man is like a blazing furnace, and the more he throws into it...

and so forth, the fiercer the furnace becomes, burning both himself and those around him. Fasting is a great virtue. It was not established through some piece of human wisdom. As Basil the Great says, “Fasting was ordained in Paradise.” The first command Adam received was, “You shall not eat.” These words, “You shall not eat,” established fasting. “If Adam and Eve had fasted then,” he says, “we would not have fallen from that fasting. Let us therefore fast, that we may return to Paradise.” This is what the Holy Father says. Fasting, then, is not the invention of some ridiculous, foolish, or inconsistent person. A living example is the threat against Nineveh. When Jonah preached against Nineveh...

“Three days more, and Nineveh shall be destroyed,” the king learned of it. What weapon did he present before the justice of God? Fasting. The king issued a command that the people should fast, the livestock should fast, and even the infants should fast; no one was to eat or drink. “Who knows whether God may relent?” And God did not destroy Nineveh. What, then, does this prove? The power of fasting. Whatever I may personally want or prefer, and however much I may ignore fasting, its power is tremendous. Yet today there are people who do not fast.

John Chrysostom gives a beautiful admonition: “Take care,” he says, “that you do not refuse to receive fasting as a companion at your table, dishonor it, and send it away, saying, ‘Go away from here. I am rich.’”

“‘Fasting is for the poor. Have you not heard people say, “The servant of God fasts because he has nothing to eat”? But I have plenty; my refrigerator is full.’ Take care,” he says, “because if you do such a thing, fasting will go and accuse you before Christ the Lawgiver, and He will take these things away from you. Then you will fast against your will. Or He may permit an illness that brings conflicting dietary demands—one condition requiring meat and another requiring vegetables. Then you will eat only what the doctor prescribes. Whether you wished to fast or not, you will be fasting by necessity, and such fasting is not counted. The fasting that Christ receives as a virtue and rewards is fasting undertaken willingly. This is now a season of mourning. From Sunday evening until Friday evening, the Holy Table is vested in either purple or black. On Friday evening, for the Salutations to the Theotokos, the black coverings are removed and brighter coverings are put on, so that the joyful Divine Liturgy may be celebrated on Saturday and Sunday.

Your mother is in mourning, then. If your earthly mother had recently died, you would not even offer coffee. Here your mother, the Church, is mourning. If you do not have the Church as your mother, then you do not have God as your Father or Christ as your brother. Understand this; do not deceive yourself or invent your own ways. Today at the restaurant I was eating stuffed vegetables, while beside me a priest was eating fish. Someone might say, “Excuse me, do you know that priest?” No, I do not know him; I merely saw him. How do I know who he is—whether he is a Uniate or follows the Old Calendar? Go on your way. In fact, he was an Old Calendarist. I made inquiries and learned that the priest living at that particular house follows the Old Calendar, and their fasting season begins thirteen days later. Keep your mouth shut. God will not ask you about another person’s failings. If a clergyman sins, he sins on his own account. Never lay hold of a clergyman. A clergyman is like a coal—either black or glowing red. If all is well, good. But if you touch the glowing coal, you will be burned; if you touch the black coal, you will be soiled. Keep your mouth shut. “Whatever they tell you, observe and do; but do not act according to their works, for they speak and do not act.”

“But I saw him buying it.” For whom was he buying it? For himself? Perhaps he was buying it for his sick child, his sick presvytera, or some other sick person. How would you know? Did you go out to pass judgment, or to do your business and return home? Who appointed you judge? Who are you to judge? Are you waiting for saintly priests and hierarchs before you fast or go to Holy Confession? Then you are stumbling badly. Do you want God to send you angels? Their presence would overwhelm you. As I said in Church this morning, instead of looking at our own sins and our own love for God, we shift the matter onto other people.

They too know temptation, poverty, bodily hunger, and every kind of struggle. There is no excuse. My Christ will not become any less because of something I did—or because of what a priest did. The priest will answer for his own deeds, and I will answer for mine. In any case, we now come to the first Sunday of the Fast, called the Sunday of Orthodoxy. What did we say this means? Who was paying attention? For a person to be saved, he needs right faith and right conduct, like two oars. People say they believe. Do you believe? “Of course I believe.” In what? “I believe in a higher power.” Do you believe? “Of course.” In what? “In some higher being—certainly, in something.” And you—what do you believe? “I believe.” In whom? “I believe in Jehovah, in God.” Very well. And you—what do you believe? “I believe in Christ.” In which Christ? The Pope’s Christ? The Protestant’s Christ? Luther’s Christ? The Christ of Orthodoxy? In which Christ do you believe?

When our Christ was on earth, as we read in Matthew 16:16, He asked an important question one day. “My children,” He said, “as you go about among the people, tell Me: who do people say that I am?” Some said He was the Prophet Elijah; others Jeremiah; others John the Forerunner; and still others one of the prophets. Very well, that is what the world outside says. It has various opinions about Me. “But who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Then Peter, energetic and simple in heart, sprang forward and said, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.” Son of Jonah, you are blessed.

“Flesh and blood did not reveal to you what you have said; it was not something you discovered for yourself, but My Father revealed it to you.”

So, is it enough for me to believe, in my own way, in some higher power or higher being—to believe in God, or to believe in Christ merely as a great man, a reformer, a socialist, or a communist, as today’s new movements claim when they say that Christ was a communist? Is that the Christ you believe in? He is not the son of some god—not of Zeus, Apollo, Ares, or any of the other Olympian gods. For the only living God is our God, the God of Orthodoxy: Christ, the Triune God. And do you believe in that Christ? Many people believe in Christ, but when you bring them as far as the Resurrection, they say, “We will hear you again about this.” That is what our forefathers in Athens said when Paul spoke to them and came to the subject of the Resurrection: “Let us stop here.” The Resurrection sounded so absurd to them. So they tell you, “Believe however you like, my good man.”

Do you believe in—and prove by your deeds—that Christ whom the angel proclaimed? What did the angel say to the Myrrh-bearing Women? “Do not be afraid. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen; He is not here.” He said all of this. This is the Christ in whom we believe. This Jesus has a Gospel, with exactness and teaching. He has this inn and its innkeepers, and He leads into it all those who have fallen among thieves, so that they may be healed and then depart. There are people who, on the one hand, believe in Christ, yet do not do what Christ says. For Christ said, “He who loves Me will keep My word,” and, “He who believes in Me will keep My word”—the law of God. Has Christ not appointed fasting for these days? Then why do you not fast?

He also gives married couples the blessing of children. Why, then, do you refuse to have children? Does He not require honor, morality, and chastity from young women and young men? Why do they not remain chaste? How will they come tomorrow to receive the prizes and the crowns? “Crown them with glory and honor.” If they live dishonorably, how can this be?

I do not truly believe. For if I believed, I would entrust myself to Him. And our God is almighty; He can always change everything. Nothing can stand before Him. So it is not enough for a person to believe in his own way, because many people believe in their own way. This is why we say that right belief and right conduct together constitute Orthodoxy. Forgive me. Then comes the Second Sunday of Great Lent, another point along the road. What does the Church set before us on that day?

She brings forth a great figure from Thessaloniki: Saint Gregory Palamas. Have you ever read who Saint Gregory Palamas is for Orthodoxy? Or are we completely ignorant of the struggle he waged? If you have the Philokalia—and if you do not, go and obtain the fourth volume—read about Saint Gregory Palamas, about the First Sunday of Orthodoxy and the Second Sunday of Orthodoxy, and about the struggle against the papists. For not all roads lead to Rome. No, my good man. There is one road: the road of the crucified Jesus Christ. It leads the human person back into Paradise, our longed-for homeland, as the hymn says: “Grant me the homeland for which I long, making me once again a citizen of Paradise.” Then we continue and come to the Veneration of the Cross, another station midway through Great Lent. You look toward the end, you look back toward the beginning, and you see that you are halfway there. The Church brings out the Cross and raises it before you: You who are struggling, venerate the Precious Cross, receive strength from it, and complete the rest of the journey.

Complete the rest of the service, the remainder of your canon, your rule of prayer. You cannot do this by yourselves. The Cross is life-giving; the Cross is power. And you women, take some basil—or, since there is none at this season, take violets or rosemary from the Cross—to start leaven in your homes. Put flour and warm water in a bowl, and place this flower from the Cross in it, so that the Orthodox leaven may rise. What is the Cross? The Protestants tell me one thing; the Jehovah’s Witnesses regard it as an instrument of murder; and the papists make its sign with five fingers and in the opposite direction. But what does Holy Scripture say the Cross is? By this afternoon, the flower from the Cross will cause your dough to rise. Knead it again, and it will overflow the bowl. Make prosphora from it and bring them to our Church. Keep some of that leaven as well, so that you can bake with it and bring loaves made of wheat flour to the Church, enabling the priests to perform their ministry properly, instead of having to use those spongy loaves produced by our laziness and indifference...

That does not help the sacred work to be done properly. And so the journey continues, and today we come to the fourth week. The Church brings forth one of the Fathers—alongside so many events from the Gospel—John Climacus, a great figure who lived at Sinai in the sixth century. Read why he is called John Climacus. He composed thirty discourses which, if a person puts them into practice one by one, form a ladder that raises him into the Kingdom of Heaven. But who knows him? What can you not find in libraries today? They contain every kind of foreign book, every kind of filthy thing, all sorts of things both good and bad. Yet John Climacus is absent. Today, the work of John Climacus has been published in translation, and people can be greatly edified by it; nevertheless, they do not possess it. Next Sunday the Church will present Saint Mary of Egypt, the notorious prostitute of her day—that is, a young woman who had become deeply corrupted.

By the age of seventeen she had brought ruin upon Alexandria. Yet through metanoia, through repentance, she crossed the Jordan and lived in the desert. After forty-six years, God sent the elder Zosimas to hear her confession, give her Holy Communion, and bury her with the help of a lion. Read her Life sometime; it will make your hair stand on end. Does the Church set her before us without a purpose? It is as though she says: “You who have fallen behind, you hardened offenders, you who think you are such great sinners that God cannot save you—because Satan is deceiving you—I bring this woman before you as an example. Imitate her.” Are the things Christ does within His Church during these days merely accidental? And then we come to the universal resurrection of Lazarus, on the eve of Palm Sunday. Lazarus was not raised on that Saturday itself. He had been raised much earlier, as we read in the eleventh chapter of John, and had departed for the city of Ephraim; six days beforehand, he returned once again.

Lazarus is received by his sisters, who offer hospitality in thanksgiving, and on the following day the Lord enters Jerusalem seated upon the colt of a donkey, as the Jewish people proclaim. This is why that day is especially celebrated as His Entry into Jerusalem. From that point onward, the scene changes. We enter Holy Week. It is not called “Great” because it has more hours or more days, but because the events are greater; for this reason it is Great and Holy Week. At the same time, it is called the Week of the Passion. From the very first evening, there is more than one can possibly take in: “We commemorate Joseph the All-Comely.” There is an entire world of meaning there that must be studied. From his birth, Joseph was in every respect a type of Christ. Then comes Great and Holy Tuesday: the virgins, the foolish virgins and the wise virgins. And how many foolish virgins—both men and women—are there even today?

I remind you of these things. A person must bow his head before these great events. We hear—and come merely to hear—the melody of Kassiani’s troparion. “Kassiani was a prostitute,” someone says. Really? Were you there? Was Kassiani a prostitute? No! The author is speaking about a sinful woman, the sinful woman commemorated on Wednesday. And the hymnographer sets your own life over against hers. You will see that he is speaking of his own soul, which the darkness and gloom of sin have seized. We pass through the events of Wednesday and arrive at the Mystical Supper on Thursday. When we reach the Mystical Supper of Thursday, the setting and the events change. We bring forward the events of that night. Throughout Holy Week, the services appointed for the morning are transferred to the preceding evening, to Vespers, because Vespers opens into...

...the events of the following day, especially those of Matins (Orthros). “Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant.” Yet how many people do not even come to this table? How many who are unrepentant, self-seeking, or unjust—how many whose hands drip with blood—come forward merely to receive wishes for many years? And, as I said earlier, consider the mockery encouraged by certain careless mothers, who stand before the Holy Chalice speaking of “a little bone,” “a little golden tooth,” and “a little honey.” Why, my little one? Why honey, a little wine, and a golden tooth? Why? Because this makes a mockery of the Mystery. It is Christ, my child—Christ. In any case, we continue. We enter the events of Great and Holy Friday. Three crosses—three crosses will stand before us. Not merely the one Cross of Christ and two others, nor the second man who dies in remembrance of...

...that mythical account of mine, which does not exist in the New Testament. From the moment Christ rose, everything changed. There is Baptism: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” There is confession: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” What does Scripture say when Christ died? “And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” However much people may wish...

φωνάζουν οι άνθρωποι. Ο Φαρισαίος, ο οποίος δεν έκλεψε, δεν ατίμασε, δεν επόρνευσε, ο Φαρισαίος, ο οποίος ενήστευε δυο φορές τη βδομάδα, ο Φαρισαίος που ήταν ελεήμων, που απεδεκάτου, έμεινε έξω. Έλα ντε, έμεινε έξω. Ο μεγάλος αδελφός, ο οποίος ουδέποτε παρήλθε εντολή του Θεού, του πατέρα του, κατ' επέκταση του Θεού, ο οποίος τον εδούλευε με τόση πίστη, έμεινε έξω. Έλα ντε, έμεινε έξω κι αυτός. Και μπήκε ο άλλος μέσα, ο Τελώνης, που έπινε το αίμα των ανθρώπων, και μπήκε ο Άσωτος Υιός και τα γλέντησε, που έκαμε τη ζωή του με τις φιλενάδες του, που έκανε ό,τι ήθελε. Ναι, δεν σου κάνει παράξενο αυτό; Το πρόσεξες; Τι είδες κι εσύ;

της Τυρινής, κατά την τελευταία λεγομένη Απόκρεω και την Καθαρά Δευτέρα, δεν γίνονται όλο τον χρόνο. Σε ποσότητα και σε βρωμιά, σε ποιότητα. Νομίζω ότι είστε άνθρωποι μορφωμένοι επί του 20ού αιώνα και ξέρετε και βλέπετε και ακούτε και εκτείνετε γύρω σας αυτές τις ημέρες. Ο Χριστιανός πρέπει να καταλάβει τους ρυθμούς προκλήσεως. Όταν λοιπόν του διδάξει όλα αυτά στο πρώτο μέρος, τον εισάγει στο δεύτερο μέρος. Αυτά συναντά στον δρόμο βαδίζοντας. Δεν πέρασαν από εδώ αυτά; Πέρασαν και από εδώ. Είναι ένας ο δρόμος αυτός και τα έχει όλα αυτά μέσα. Μπαίνεις μέσα στην πρώτη εβδομάδα. Την Τετάρτη, λέει, Προηγιασμένη. Την Παρασκευή, λέει, Προηγιασμένη. Είναι αυτό πάλι; Δεν το είχαμε τον άλλο χρόνο αυτό; Ρώτησες τι είναι αυτό; Πήγες στην εκκλησία να παρακολουθήσεις; Έλαβες μέρος στην Προηγιασμένη;

Άγιο Ποτήριο για σένα, το στήθος της μάνας σου. Έχετε δει τα παιδιά πώς βυζαίνουν, πώς αρπάζουνε το στήθος της μάνας τους να φάνε γάλα, να το κατασπαράξουν; Νιώθεις αυτή την επιθυμία, αυτή τη λαχτάρα;

Ξέρουν κι αυτοί από πειρασμό, τι ξέρουν από φτώχεια, τι ξέρουν από κοιλιά, τι ξέρουν από τα πάντα. Δεν υπάρχει καμία δικαιολογία. Δεν θα μου μικρύνει ο Χριστός μου αν εγώ έκανα... Με τον ιερέα. Ο ιερέας θα δώσει τα δικά του και εγώ θα δώσω τα δικά μου. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, την πρώτη Κυριακή τώρα συναντούμε, την πρώτη Κυριακή των Νηστειών, Κυριακή λέγεται της Ορθοδοξίας. Τι είπαμε ότι θα πει αυτό; Ποιος το πρόσεχε; Για να σωθεί ο άνθρωπος χρειάζεται ορθοπιστία και ορθοπραξία, δύο κουπιά. Πιστεύουν οι άνθρωποι. Πιστεύεις; Βέβαια πιστεύω. Σε τι πιστεύεις; Πιστεύω σε μια ανώτερη δύναμη. Εσύ πιστεύεις; Βέβαια πιστεύω. Σε τι πιστεύεις; Σε κάποιο ανώτερο ον. Βέβαια, κάτι. Σε τι πιστεύεις παρακάτω; Πιστεύω. Πού πιστεύεις εκεί; Στον Ιεχωβά πιστεύω, στον Θεό. Τέλος. Παρακάτω, σε τι πιστεύεις; Σε τι πιστεύεις; Πιστεύω στον Χριστό. Σε ποιον Χριστό; Του Πάπα τον Χριστό, του Προτεστάντου, του Λουθήρου τον Χριστό, της Ορθοδοξίας τον Χριστό; Σε ποιον Χριστό πιστεύεις;

Πιστεύεις και το αποδεικνύεις με τις πράξεις σου, εκείνον τον Χριστό που δογμάτισε ο άγγελος. Τι είπε ο άγγελος στις Μυροφόρες; «Μὴ φοβεῖσθε· Ἰησοῦν ζητεῖτε τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον, τὸν Ναζαρηνόν· ἠγέρθη, οὐκ ἔστιν ὧδε». Είπε αυτά όλα. Αυτόν τον νομίζουμε. Αυτός ο Ιησούς έχει Ευαγγέλιο, έχει ακρίβεια και διδασκαλία, έχει το πανδοχείο αυτό και τους πανδοχείς και όλους τους περιπεσόντας εις ληστάς τούς οδηγεί εδώ μέσα να θεραπευτούν και από εδώ να φύγουν. Οι άνθρωποι, λοιπόν, οι οποίοι από το ένα μέρος πιστεύουν στον Χριστό, αλλά δεν πράττουν ό,τι λέγει ο Χριστός — γιατί ο Χριστός είπε «ὁ ἀγαπῶν ἐμὲ τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσει», «ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσει» — τον νόμον του Θεού. Δεν έχει ο Χριστός νηστεία αυτές τις μέρες; Γιατί δεν νηστεύεις;

Έχει για τα ανδρόγυνα παιδιά και ευλογία. Γιατί δεν κάνεις παιδιά; Δεν έχει τιμιότητα, ηθική, σωφροσύνη για τις κοπέλες, για τους νέους; Γιατί δεν παρθενεύουν; Πώς θα έρθουν να πάρουν αύριο τα βραβεία, τα στέφανα; «Δόξῃ καὶ τιμῇ στεφάνωσον αὐτούς». Εφόσον είναι άτιμοι, πώς θα γίνει;

Δεν πιστεύω. Γιατί, αν πίστευε, θα του εμπιστευόμουν. Και ο Θεός ο δικός μας είναι παντοδύναμος, πάντα μπορεί να αλλάξει. Τίποτα δεν σταματάει μπροστά του. Δεν είναι, λοιπόν, αρκετό να πιστεύει ο άνθρωπος με τον τρόπο του. Γιατί πολλοί άνθρωποι πιστεύουν με τον τρόπο τους. Γι’ αυτό λέγει: ορθοπιστία και ορθοπραξία συνιστούν Ορθοδοξία. Συγχωρείτε. Έρχεται η δεύτερη Κυριακή των Νηστειών. Συναντάμε στον δρόμο εδώ. Τι παρουσιάζει την ημέρα εκείνη;

Φιλοξενείται για το ευχαριστώ από τις αδελφές του Λαζάρου και την άλλη μέρα, επί πώλου όνου, εισήλθε ο Κύριος, όπως λένε οι Ιουδαίοι, και γι’ αυτό την ημέρα κατ’ εξοχήν εισήλθε στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Ναι, κι από εκεί αλλάζουν πλέον τα σκηνικά. Μπαίνουμε στη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα. Όχι γιατί είναι σε ώρες μεγαλύτερη, όχι γιατί είναι σε μέρες μεγαλύτερη, αλλά επειδή τα γεγονότα είναι μεγαλύτερα, γι’ αυτό είναι Μεγάλη Εβδομάς. Και λέγεται ταυτόχρονα Εβδομάς των Παθών. Τι να μην πρωτοπαρακολουθήσει από το πρώτο βράδυ; «Μνήμην ποιούμεθα Ἰωσὴφ τοῦ Παγκάλου». Έναν μεγάλο κόσμο που πρέπει να διαβαστεί. Από τη γέννησή του ήταν κατά πάντα τύπος του Χριστού. Μεγάλη Τρίτη: παρθένες, μωρές παρθένες και φρόνιμες παρθένες. Πόσες μωρές παρθένες, και άντρες και γυναίκες, δεν υπάρχουν και σήμερα;
