Summary
Christ’s entry into Jerusalem forms the liturgical bridge between Great Lent and Holy Week, culminating in His voluntary Passion and sacrifice as the Paschal Lamb. The lecture contrasts faithful generosity with greed, warning that neither wealth nor poverty determines happiness apart from a rightly ordered relationship with Christ. The donkey carrying Christ becomes an image of the priesthood: clergy are honored for bearing Christ sacramentally, though unworthy ministers remain accountable to divine judgment.

In Jerusalem especially, as our Church says, we celebrate the Feast of Palms. Before Holy Week and all its events—foremost among them Great Friday, when everything reaches its culmination—there is this connecting link: the entry of our Lord into Jerusalem. After a brief withdrawal, He returned from a city called Ephraim and was received as a guest in the home of Lazarus and his sisters.
He entered Jerusalem in triumph and remained there. He surrendered Himself to His voluntary Passion and was slain like the lamb of the Jewish Passover, on the eve of the Sabbath—that is, on Friday afternoon. As for Holy Week, which is the third part of this whole period and contains its most momentous events, those of you who were with us last year will remember that we spoke separately about every day, giving two talks on some of them. There was one talk each on Great Monday, Great Tuesday, Great Wednesday, and Great Thursday; two talks on Great Friday; two on Great Saturday; and one on Pascha.
They can see there, in summary, what each day offers, recalls, and teaches, and take their proper place within it. This evening, then, as Holy Week approaches, I would like to speak about the events that form the connecting link between Great Lent and Holy Week: the entry of our Lord into Jerusalem. I do not know whether you are aware—as I mentioned briefly earlier—that on Saturday evening Christ was a guest in the home of Lazarus and his sisters. Nor do I know whether you realize that the raising of Lazarus did not take place on Lazarus Saturday. Lazarus was raised much earlier, and after Christ raised him, He withdrew into the wilderness.
Once again, He had withdrawn from the presence of the Jews. Here is the proof: when He wished to return with His disciples to see Lazarus, after word had come that Lazarus was ill and he had already died, Thomas objected and was not eager to follow. I do not know whether you have read about these events in the eleventh chapter of John, but when Christ told them to go, Thomas said the following.
Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” The Jews had previously sought to stone Him, and so they had left. Why, then, should they now return and expose themselves to danger? But since He insisted, they would remain close to Him; if death was their lot, so be it. We also read that Christ departed after the raising of Lazarus in John, chapter 11, verse 53: “From that day onward they took counsel together to put Him to death.” Instead of believing because of the Resurrection and acknowledging Him, they conspired to kill Him. “Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews.” Christ, it says, no longer went about openly or appeared publicly, but departed from there to a region near the wilderness.
He went to a city called Ephraim, and there He remained with His disciples. From there, six days before Passover, as the passage goes on to say, He departed and came to stay in the home of Lazarus and his sisters, who received Him in gratitude because He had raised their brother. Then, the next morning, on Sunday—
—in order to enter Jerusalem, He asked for an animal, as Holy Scripture tells us. He entered Jerusalem upon the colt of a donkey, and the people received Him. I shall now read to you from chapter 12, verse 1: “Then Jesus, six days before Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died and whom He had raised from the dead.” He came to the place where Lazarus had lived and died, the man whom He had raised from the dead. Bethany is about three kilometers from Jerusalem. I want you to know that Lazarus’s house is in Bethany. His tomb is also there in Bethany, and unfortunately—
—the Muslims have control of it, and we must pay to visit it. Also in Bethany there is still the stone upon which Christ sat when He returned, after Lazarus’s sisters had sent word to Him: “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” Christ remained where He was for two days and returned on the fourth day; that is why He found Lazarus already four days in the tomb. About six or seven hundred meters from Lazarus’s tomb stands the holy monastery of Bethany, a women’s monastery, where there is a stone about the size of this lectern.
Christ sat there and spoke first with Martha and then with Mary. As we know from Holy Scripture, when Martha learned that the Teacher was coming, she left the people in the house who had come to comfort them and offer their condolences, as we say, and went out to meet Him. There she spoke those well-known words: if You had been here, my brother would not have died. Then followed their conversation in which He said, “I am the Resurrection; I am the Life,” and so forth. Mary then came as well, and from there they set out for the tomb, where He raised Lazarus. That place where Christ sat and spoke, as I said, with Martha and Mary still exists today, and it bears the same spiritual fragrance—
—as all the places through which Christ passed, where He sat and lived: the All-Holy Sepulchre, the place of the Deposition from the Cross, the Mount of Temptation where He fasted and prayed for forty days, and so forth. I mention these things to show you how they are connected. I also want you to know that on the morning He departed, He asked that a young donkey, the colt of a donkey, be brought to Him from a nearby village called Bethphage, meaning a village rich in olives and oil. As one leaves the monastery of Bethany and proceeds toward the tomb of Lazarus, after about a hundred and fifty paces one comes to the place where there is still a stone upon which Christ stepped to mount the donkey.
The place is enclosed by a wall, and a monument stands there. I also want you to know that, according to tradition, when the animal that carried our Lord into Jerusalem was released, it returned and died at the place where Christ had first mounted it. Let us continue. “There they made Him a supper, and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of those who reclined at the table with Him.” Lazarus, who, as I told you, had been raised some time before, was among the company. Martha was always serving and making preparations. Mary, then, took a pound—
—of costly, pure nard: a jar, as we would call it, of precious myrrh, genuine and of recognized quality, what we might call veritable—something excellent. She anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair. She washed His feet with myrrh.
Ordinarily, they would provide a basin of water so that the guests could wash their feet, and they would offer them comfortable sandals to wear inside the house. Here, however, they used not water but myrrh; and instead of what we would call a towel, she used her hair. But where are women today to find such hair?
A rope—Satan. Remember what I am telling you.
Remember what I am telling you: when you die, Satan will show you your hair along the road you will travel. “Here I have you. God placed the Holy Trinity upon your head, because a braid is made of three strands. It is a symbol of the Holy Trinity, and I persuaded you to remove it. You belong to me.” Remember what I am telling you, and leave fashions and the things the establishment tells you behind. We have let ourselves go astray. These are the things Christ says. If He still tolerates us, He tolerates us; but His justice does not. To tolerate is one thing and to forgive is another. To tolerate is one thing and to pardon is another. I tolerate you so that you may come to metanoia, to repentance. You did not know; you made a mistake; now correct it. I am waiting for you to correct yourself. I want you perfect. I have no repair shop above. I who fashioned you knew how I fashioned you. It would be presumptuous for someone to attempt to correct a painting by a great artist.
Presumptuous indeed. Yet we have the audacity to correct God, as though He had not made us well. This is what Satan tells us: God has not made us well. “I will take you to the beauty institute, and it will remake you.” How can you correct me? Will you remake me? What is there for you to correct? I was made for His palace. He fashioned me fit for His own palace. For whose palace will you fashion me? “I am remaking you for mine; I give no thought to His.” But how can a person understand these things? “And she wiped His feet with her hair,” the passage says. “And the house was filled with the fragrance of the myrrh.” Among those close to Christ, and even among those in His wider circle, there were always people moved by calculation and burdened with weaknesses. One such person appears here: Judas.
“Then one of His disciples said.” This is a serious matter. We say the same thing today: “He is a spiritual man.” Are you going to tell me that? What did I say that made him a spiritual man? How can he enter a household where there is no fasting? How can he enter a household where there are no children? How can he look upon the wife, the daughters, and the others? Men and women can no longer be told apart. A spiritual man! Could he be more spiritual than Judas, or closer to Christ? He belongs to an association, an organization, a movement. Because he belongs to something, perhaps he imagines that he also belongs to Christ and to His innermost circle. But listen to this gentleman: “Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who was about to betray Him, said.” He was there among them. And what did he say?
“Why was this myrrh not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” He sets out to correct Mary’s action. The only person entitled to correct Mary’s action in this instance, I believe, was our Lord Christ—not Judas. It was none of Judas’s business. Yet he carried on this argument within himself and even dared to rebuke her and voice his opinion before the Judge, who in His divinity tolerated him. Come now—who are you? Nevertheless, he presented himself as a philanthropist, as someone concerned for the poor. Who did this? That great thief, for he was a thief. John says so plainly.
He was a thief; he had the money box and used to take what was put into it. He was not concerned for the poor. Of course, the myrrh was costly; it was worth a great deal of money. His head spun when he heard “three hundred denarii.” Do you know what three hundred denarii means? It means three hundred days’ wages. That was the value of this myrrh. But it was not being offered to a girlfriend or a friend; it was being offered to God. And for God, not merely three hundred denarii but the whole world is not enough to offer Him or to render what Christ deserves—not simply because He is God, but because of what He has done for us. Have you noticed what the Akathist Hymn says in one place?
Near the end of the Akathist Hymn there is a relevant detail, and allow me to use it here. The hymn says: “For every hymn is defeated when it strives to extend itself to the multitude of Your many compassions.” This means that all the hymns in the world and every mouth—even the mouths of irrational creatures, beasts, infants, and birds—if they could speak, praise, and thank God, would still offer almost nothing. Every hymn falls short in comparison with what You have done for us. “For if we offered You songs equal in number to the grains of sand, O Holy King, we would still accomplish nothing worthy.”
Even if our hymns were as numerous as all the grains of sand in Greece and throughout the world, we still would offer nothing worthy of what You have done for us. So Judas heard that it was worth three hundred denarii. How charitable he appears, concerned for the poor! He wanted that money to go into the money box, into the purse he himself managed. The more you have, the more you can embezzle and steal. If you have only a little, what can you steal and what can you leave behind? You will be caught. That was his real motive. But John exposes him here, saying: “He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he had the money box and used to take what was put into it.” Of course—he was taking the funds for himself. There are many such people around Christ, acting in the name of Christ and in the name of religion.
There are Christians who are merely playacting. Do not let that scandalize you. If those in Christ’s own inner circle—who saw Him face to face, heard Him with their own ears, and looked upon Him with their own eyes—could do such things, imagine how much must happen today, when we are two thousand years removed from Him. My dear ones, do not try to contend with the justice of God, because God’s justice does not act in only one direction. It does not look only at those outside.
It looks at those within as well. And what else are we going to point out to Him? He also sees us when lawless people point an accusing finger at us. But we do not think about these things. Christ, as though nothing had happened, calmly spoke a few practical words: “Then Jesus said, ‘Let her alone.’” Why are you tormenting her, upsetting her, and making her grieve over what she has done?
“She has kept this for the day of My burial.” Do you know what that means? I am going to die. No one will anoint Me with myrrh after My death, so she is anointing Me now, while I am alive—while I am alive. He is prophesying. For when the myrrh-bearing women went to anoint Christ, carrying the spices in their hands, they had to take them back, because Christ had risen. The spices remained unused.
Thank you. So let her anoint Me with myrrh. He tells them, “Let her anoint Me while I am alive.” She need not be troubled or wonder why He speaks of dying and of not being anointed, because He would already be risen when they went there, as we read in the other accounts of what took place. There is also a profound teaching here. Let the modern Judases who make a show of caring for the poor and demand equality pay attention to it. No greater misery and ruin would come upon the world than if all people were made equal. You yourselves would suffer. One person would neither toil nor work nor do anything at all. We would all become like beasts, demanding everything from others. Yet it is right that we are not all the same. This inequality creates an orderly society. What does that mean? We might say that God created people different from one another so that each might complete what is lacking in the other. Look at your hand. Take a good look at it.
The fingers differ in shape, length, thickness, and function. Yet when you bring them together, they form a single bud. Each one completes the others. Look at the toes of your foot and see how they are formed. If they were all perfectly straight and projected equally, we would not be able to walk. God’s wisdom is always behind these things. So Christ answers Judas: “Besides, Judas—and you modern Judases as well—you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.” There will always be poor people in the world. We do not want to make anyone poor. But when poverty exists, God often blesses it, and it can bear kinder and better fruit than wealth. You may find poor people who are happy.
But you will rarely find rich people who are truly happy. Money does not create happiness, nor does poverty create misery. Christ creates happiness, and Satan creates misery. Despite the harsh treatment he received from the rich man, poor Lazarus found it easier to enter Paradise. The rich man, because of his comfort, his money, his glory, and his feasting, found it difficult. “The Lord made the rich and the poor,” Proverbs says. In other words, both are blessed. The word “made” itself implies a blessing: God accepts them both, provided that the poor person makes good use of his poverty and the rich person makes good use of his wealth. As I have said many times, wealth brings many responsibilities and makes many demands upon the one who possesses it.
A person is easily led astray, for the people have a saying: “If you have money, you have your god”—as though to say, “Who are you to tell me anything?” Yet so many things happen right beside us which show that wealth does not create happiness and that happiness is not so easily attained. In Kiato, if you travel along the old road, you will come upon an enormous warehouse after the slaughterhouses. It belongs to a man named Zouzoulas. I do not know whether he is still alive; he was alive until a few years ago. He conducted such a vast trade and owned such a huge weighing scale that whenever someone told an outrageous lie, people would say, “Not even Zouzoulas’s great scale could bear that one.” He had so many gold sovereigns that he could thrust his shepherd’s crook into the pile and leave it standing upright—so you understand the kind of wealth he possessed.
And do you know what became of that man? He ended up feeding himself with bunches of grapes left in the vineyards and tomatoes left behind in the fields. Why? Because he took no account of the One who had given him all those things. There was another man in Kato Achaia, Evangelia, who had so much money in his day that he poured it into a room as people pour in wheat. He would go outside, make an obscene gesture toward God, and say, “There is nothing up there. My god is inside my room.” That man died lying on his back in a deep ditch, still making that gesture toward God.
What I am telling you may sound strange, but these are events of our own time. They did not happen in some distant age; they happened in our day. The things some people imagine will bring happiness do not bring it.
Take the late Onassis as an example. Even his name has vanished today, as you know. What remains of that name? I am not against wealth and in favor of poverty—no. If you can lawfully accomplish something, then do it. But if you take advantage of financial ruin or bankruptcy, you are behaving basely. Do not climb upward by trampling on the dead and imagine that you are creating happiness. No. You will depart from this world just as I shall; that is not the issue. In any case, Christ tells us: “You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.” I am going away. “Then a great crowd of the Jews learned...” Everything I have described was said and done inside the house that evening, at the supper.
Then, the Gospel says, the people outside heard the news.
“Jesus is coming to Jerusalem.” The people learned that He had set His course for Jerusalem. “They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him.” Palm branches are a symbol of victory. You yourselves have seen how we crown our heroes with laurel. It is a symbol of victory and of immortality. They now welcome Christ as the conqueror of death. Lazarus, it seems, was a prominent figure in Jewish society. He was Jewish by birth, but belonged to the Pharisaic religious party—a strict Pharisee. In any case, he was evidently well known, and the people had heard of his death.
His relatives and many people from Jerusalem hurried to comfort the two sisters of this prominent man. Afterwards they marveled when they learned that this man, who had died, had been raised by Christ, and the event caused a tremendous stir. So the people, the great crowd, set out carrying these symbols of immortality and began to welcome Him as the conqueror of death. This means something great for us as well, though we do not appreciate it. The day after tomorrow, God willing, the Church will give these palm branches to us too. What, do you think they might make a little rabbit out of them? Let them; God is generous. So they went out to meet Him with palm branches, crying: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.”
These words had been spoken long before. The Psalmist says them in Psalm 117, verse 26. There you will find David prophetically speaking of this very moment and of this “Hosanna”: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel.” “And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it,” just as I said at the beginning. “As it is written”—the Prophet Zechariah wrote these words nine hundred years before Christ, in chapter 9, verse 9—“Fear not, daughter of Zion,” meaning Jerusalem; “behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.” He had seen it even then. Lord, why did You not use a horse, a noble steed
worthy of You? You are a King. David, Solomon, and other kings rode fine horses. Why do You ride a donkey? Why this humble animal? You know, the donkey is a type—a prophetic image—of patient endurance and humility. And Christ, the very embodiment of patient endurance and humility, used the fitting means so that everyone could recognize Him. Have you never wondered why Gabriel was sent to serve in the incarnation of God? Because the name Gabriel is interpreted as “God and man,” and he came to minister to the God-Man. So it is here as well.
This is how it is. If you pay attention, you will see how God prepared everything so that all people could understand these events both through knowledge and through what they saw; then they could marvel and glorify Him. In any case, “His disciples did not understand these things at first.” They did not grasp what was unfolding around them. “But when Jesus was glorified”—when He was later crucified—then they understood. Then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and had been done to Him. That is why all these things took place. “The crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. For this reason the crowd also went to meet Him, because they had heard that He had performed this”
sign. That is why they welcomed Him. The crowd had learned what He had done in those days. At this point I would like to make another observation that may edify someone. You know, Satan understands how to wage war against a person and what can keep him far from Christ. So he always makes sure that there is some black stain upon the clergy. And I want you to know this: if, for one reason or another, there is no clergy, or if people refuse to make use of their ministry because of the accusations made against them, those people will be lost. There is no salvation.
The clergy are the connecting link, the bridge. If you will allow me to use an expression that is not really fitting, in ordinary language they are a “necessary evil.” Yet many people fixate on the clergy’s faults. Just yesterday morning, as I was returning from the place where I had gone to speak on Wednesday, the driver and I were discussing how he would spend the days of Pascha. When we came to the subject of how he had prepared, he said many shameful and cynical things against the clergy. I spoke to him as well as I could, trying to free him from this delusion. In this connection, I would like to use a detail found here, since the passage gives me the opportunity. As you see, concerning the entry into Jerusalem
Christ was accused—and this accusation was taken seriously at His trial—of having entered Jerusalem in His pride as a ruler and king. They said, “The son of Mary and Joseph has set Himself up as our king.” They kept this charge in the case against Him. Gentlemen, if He had entered as a worldly ruler, He would have ridden, as I said, upon a fine horse, with reins, spurs, and all the rest. Instead, He used a little donkey—indeed, a young colt, hardly the expected mount—for His entry. Yet all who came out in Jerusalem laid everything down before Him: palm branches, other boughs, garments—everything—so that Christ might enter.
The striking thing is that it was Christ’s little donkey that walked over all these things.
As I said, it was not Christ who stepped on them; it was Christ’s little donkey. And someone might have asked the people of Jerusalem, “Gentlemen, do you not think you are doing rather too much for this little donkey? What is this? You let it walk over your finest garments, your flowers, your festive decorations—everything. Why all this preparation for a little donkey to walk upon?” What do you think their answer would have been? I believe they would have said, “We did not offer these things for the donkey. We offered them for the One whom the donkey carries.” And that is indeed the truth. I do not think they intended to give such a magnificent welcome to the colt. All these preparations were made for the person of Jesus, were they not? If, then—
that little donkey received such expense, such crowds, such preparation, and such respect, what about these living little donkeys—the priests—who carry their God? Nothing! “They are worth nothing!” We are mistaken, beloved! What else can I say? I told you earlier that, according to tradition, when Christ dismounted from the donkey’s back, it went away and died. What will become of a priest today if he carries his God unworthily in his hands, brings Him to me, brings out the Holy Gifts, and so forth? Whether he too will die miserably, I do not know; that is not my concern. Today I will respect him because he carries my God. And since my God... Some people say, “I will not go to confession. Do you think I am a fool? Do you know what priests get up to?” So what will you do?
“I will go and receive Holy Communion.” Then how is that priest fit to prepare the Holy Gifts so that you may receive Communion without confession, yet not fit to hear your confession? Does he not have the grace of the Holy Spirit? Does not the grace of the Holy Spirit work through him? It is the Spirit Himself who acts. The priest does not carry grace in his pocket. The priest is a sinner; he is an instrument in the hands of Christ. He is not a representative, as even some of our Christians say: “His representatives.” You may believe such things among the Catholics. Here they are not representatives; they are instruments. A representative is someone who stands in for a person who is absent. That is not how it is here. There is nothing difficult to understand about this. The priest is an instrument of God, and God acts through him. “The servant of God is crowned... in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” It is not I who crown you, nor I who forgive you—
nor do I say, “I baptize you.” We say, “The servant of God is baptized.” The priest, then, is an instrument. If he is a rusty wire, that is his concern; let him see to it that he is made sound again. But I will still make use of that wire. To think otherwise is a grave mistake. I had to point this out because the present passage gives us the opportunity. It makes an impression on me: I see all that preparation, and the little donkey walking over it. What, then, does this teach us? The honor was not offered for the little donkey, but for the One it carried. The priest too is an instrument in the hands of God; and so long as Christ Himself still bears with him, who am I to say, “Away with him”? That would be a mistake. Forgive me; you may have your own opinion. I have simply stated mine. You may keep whatever view you think best. “The crowd that had been with Him bore witness that He had called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead. For this reason the crowd went to meet Him, because they had heard...”
“...that He had performed this sign.” The people learned what He had done, and that is why they welcomed Him. “The Pharisees”—that breed—“therefore said among themselves, ‘You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Behold, the world has gone after Him.’” They are envious. They refuse to acknowledge Him; they do not want Him and will not accept Him. The result is that they convene their council and do all the rest, leading to what followed: they raised Him upon the Cross, together with everything else that took place. These are the events that occurred on Palm Sunday. I do not know whether you have visited the Holy Land or are familiar with it. The Temple of Solomon is surrounded by a wall enclosing an area of about thirty-seven acres.
On the side facing the Kidron Valley, where Gethsemane, the tomb of Christ, and the other holy sites are found, there is a double gateway in the wall. It is closed and sealed—that is, it has been built up with masonry. It is called the Golden Gate. It is one of the eight gates of Jerusalem’s Old City through which people once entered and departed. Christ entered through this gate on Palm Sunday. Through this same gate, which remains closed today, the Theotokos entered at the age of three, like a young heifer, and remained in the Temple for eleven years. Through this gate Christ entered the Temple when He was twelve years old.
Through this gate Heraclius brought in the Precious Cross when he recovered it from the Persians. The entrances are closed—two doorways built up with masonry—and the place is called the Golden Gate. The Jews even believe to this day that this gate will open at the Second Coming; that is what they say. Of course, they do not acknowledge even the First Coming, yet they speak of the Second Coming. Another indication of this belief is that when the Jewish leaders came down there in 1967, all the prominent Jews went and venerated this gate. Dayan and all the others went and paid homage at the gate. I thought these things were worth mentioning so that we might connect them with the events we shall encounter during Holy Week. These events took place—
from Saturday evening until Sunday, when Christ entered Jerusalem and thereafter stood as the Paschal Lamb. God had commanded the Jews to take a lamb, sacrifice it, mark the doorposts with its blood, roast it, and eat it. That was the night on which the Jews departed from Egypt under the leadership of Moses. They called that event Passover. Passover is a Hebrew word meaning exodus, passage, or crossing over. The one thing it does not mean is feasting and revelry, though that is what we have turned it into and allowed ourselves to be carried away by. In connection with this, during the few minutes I have left to complete the hour, I would like to add a few things that may edify us in these days.
Here you are preparing for Pascha. “A blessed Pascha; a blessed Resurrection; a blessed Bright Feast,” people say in simpler language. I want you to understand that there is no Pascha without the Passion. What makes Pascha radiant is the Passion of Christ. Whoever does not live through the Passion will not understand the Resurrection. The greeting we offer our fellow human beings should instead be: “May you experience the Holy Passion of Christ with katanyxis—deep compunction—and contrition, and His Resurrection with joy.” Unfortunately, all the preparations are for Pascha—not a Pascha of the soul, but a Pascha of the stomach.
Indeed, they say that this year the feast will be bleak because of high prices and other circumstances. No. Wherever Christ is present, everything is bright and rosy. Wherever Christ is absent, there is no Pascha, only misery. That is the cause. It is the devil who drives a person to despair. The burden and melancholy a person feels weighing upon him is sin. If he can bring himself to lay down that load in the way Christ has shown us, he will feel entirely different and will grieve over all the years he lived far from Christ. Unfortunately, even this does not happen. So many other preparations are made, but nothing is done for the soul. Pascha is not for the body. Some people here have not even begun to fast. Do you know what sort of Pascha they will celebrate? Pascha is not for the body; it is for the soul. Joy belongs to the soul.
During these days, then, a person must speak with the One who, at the end of this season, ascends the Cross and stretches out His hands. He must ask Him, “What were You doing up there, and why did You stretch out Your hands?” He must speak with Him. Yet he refuses to acknowledge Him. My beloved, He died so that we might live; He died so that we might rejoice. He died so that we could address Hades and say, “O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” Unfortunately, we do not do this. That is why so many people prepare for Pascha without making the proper preparation. Great Friday is the entrance hall leading to the great joy. It is a black line from which a new light will appear. There will be thirty-three hours of darkness. The darkness upon the earth lasted six hours, but in the broader sense it lasted thirty-three hours. By darkness, I mean—
the absence of Christ from the earth. Christ was absent from the earth for thirty-three hours. He descended into Hades. As many years as He lived upon the earth, so many hours He remained in Hades. And just as He preached on earth through the Precious Forerunner and through Himself, so He also preached in Hades through the Forerunner, who went there before Him, and through Himself when He descended there. From three o’clock on Great Friday afternoon until midnight at cockcrow, when according to the tradition of the Holy Apostles the Resurrection takes place, there are thirty-three hours. We bury Jesus, yet most of us follow His funeral laughing, chatting, and joking. Sinful people, living in all kinds of transgression, attend Christ’s funeral merely for good luck or out of habit.
Christ is the victim, beloved; we are the perpetrators. We crucify Him, we put Him to death, and then we bury Him. Such is our brazenness. At least I have never learned, witnessed, or heard that when a victim is buried, the perpetrator joins the funeral party. The perpetrator will either be fleeing from justice or sitting in prison. Never does a perpetrator bury his own victim. Yet we bury Christ in great crowds—we who made Him the victim through our sins. Therefore, if we do not want the curse to remain upon us, we must abandon our sins. We must come to metanoia, to repentance. We must confess in the way He has commanded.
Should we confess to icons, to stones, to the Most Holy Theotokos, or to the Saints? Not even directly to Christ. Christ does not forgive sins directly; He forgives them through His clergy. To them He gave the grace: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” This is the one and only way. Then we must live the remaining days in repentance and celebrate Pascha. Above all else, Pascha is Holy Communion. Whenever a person receives Communion, the Fathers say, he celebrates Pascha.
The Communion received on Great Thursday is no different from that received on Great Saturday or on Pascha, and those who are unprepared must not approach. Some receive unto eternal life, while others receive unto eternal death. For Holy Communion—Christ Himself—is a burning coal that consumes the sins of those who repent, but burns the souls of those who remain unrepentant. That is why Paul, writing to the Corinthians, says, “For this reason many die, and not a few,” because they do not discern the body and blood of Christ. Read First Corinthians, chapter 11, verse 26 and following. Moreover, some who make a great show of caring about Pascha attend the proclamation of the Resurrection but, whether through ignorance or because the devil leads them astray, leave immediately afterward. That is why we see thousands present at the Resurrection, but only dozens at the service that follows. These people say they are faithful. Christ says to them, “They are not faithful, but enemies.” As I have said before, the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand about them. The prophet David, foreseeing this very moment and watching the people depart, turns, points to them, and says, “Thus shall the sinners perish.”
This is how people are lost: they flee from before the face of God. But let the righteous who remain in the Church rejoice. “When does this happen, David?” “When Christ rises. Have you not read what I wrote? ‘Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered; and let those who hate Him flee from before His face.’” This was written a thousand years before Christ. Yet a man leaves with his girlfriend in his arms, or a woman with her boyfriend; another, led away by his stomach, goes home and abandons Christ. If we believe ourselves to be friends of Christ, we are called not to do this. Sometimes we have arranged certain situations in our homes that compel us to leave. You see, this year we have a fiancé visiting, or a new son-in-law. So the son-in-law has come to drive you out of the Church! What do you want with such a son-in-law?
“Did we choose him, my child? She found him herself.” Then send both of them on their way, and you remain close to Christ. You know how it goes: “What can we do? They have come to visit. They will not remain in the Church. Will they not be offended?” Do not go. Do not go, ladies and gentlemen—do not go. And let them not come either. Do not allow them to drive you out of your Church. Remain in your Church and make this clear from the outset: “We are expecting you, and we will prepare our lambs, but first we will attend the service. If that does not suit you, do not come, because otherwise we will be upset and you will be uncomfortable.” Is this what we want during the days of Pascha? Do not act otherwise. For if you side with the world here, you will not be with Christ there. Forgive me for speaking to you in this tone on the eve of these holy days. But this is the truth. And so I wish you the Passion with katanyxis—deep compunction—and the Resurrection with joy. Amen.

«Λέγει ουν εις εκ των μαθητών αυτού». Μεγάλη υπόθεση. Το λέμε και εμείς σήμερα αυτό: «Πνευματικός άνθρωπος». Εμένα θα μου πεις; Τι είπα να πει πνευματικός άνθρωπος; Πώς μπαίνει στο σπίτι του και νηστεία δεν υπάρχει; Πώς μπαίνει στο σπίτι του και παιδιά δεν υπάρχουν; Πώς βλέπει στη σύζυγο, τα κορίτσια και λοιπά; Και δεν γνωρίζονται οι άντρες και οι γυναίκες. Πνευματικός άνθρωπος, πιο πνευματικός από τον Ιούδα, πιο στενά, ανήκει σε σύλλογο, ανήκει σε οργάνωση, ανήκει σε κίνηση. Αυτό που ανήκει, ίσως ανήκει και στον Χριστό, το στενότερο κύκλο. Άκουσε τον όμως αυτόν τον κύριο. «Λέγει ουν εις εκ των μαθητών αυτού, Ιούδας Σίμωνος Ισκαριώτης, ο μέλλων αυτόν παραδιδόναι». Μέσα υπήρχε. Τι λέγει;
Κλέπτησιν λέγητε τα βαλώμενα εβάσταζε, όχι ότι ενδιαφέρετο για τους φτωχούς. Βέβαια το μύρο ήταν ακριβό, ήταν πολλά τα λεφτά. Ζαλίστηκε αυτός όταν άκουσε 300 δηνάρια. Ξέρετε τι πάει να πει 300 δηνάρια; 300 δηνάρια πάει να πει 300 μεροκάματα. 300 μεροκάματα άξιζε αυτό το μύρο. Αλλά δεν ήταν για τη φιλενάδα ούτε για το φίλο, ήταν για τον Θεό. Και για τον Θεό όχι 300 δηνάρια, όλος ο κόσμος δεν είναι αρκετός να μπορέσει να προσφερθεί, να ικανοποιήσει αυτό που αξίζει στον Χριστό. Όχι στον Θεό, αλλά στη χειρονομία προς εμάς. Έχετε προσέξει τι λέγει ο Ακάθιστος Ύμνος σε ένα μέρος εκεί;
Και προς τα μέσα. Δεύτερον, τι άλλο θα του υποδείξουμε εμείς; Βλέπει και εμάς που μας υποδεικνύουνε άνομοι. Αλλά δεν τα σκεφτόμεθα αυτά τα πράγματα. Ο Χριστός μας, σαν να μη συνέβαινε τίποτα, είπε πρακτικά λίγα λόγια, τα οποία είναι τα εξής: «Ο ουν Ιησούς είπεν· άφες αυτήν». Τι βασανίζετε, τι πικάρετε, τι στενοχωρείτε αυτήν για τη δουλειά που έκανε;
το γαϊδουράκι εκείνο, τόσα έξοδα, τόσα πλήθη, τόση ετοιμασία, τόσος σεβασμός, για ετούτα τα ζωντανά γαϊδουράκια, τους ιερείς, που μεταφέρουν τον Θεό τους; Τίποτα! Δεν αξίζουν τίποτα αυτοί! Λάθος κάνουμε, αγαπητοί! Τι είναι, δεν ξέρω! Σας είπα γρηγορότερα ότι, όταν κατέβηκε ο Χριστός μας από την πλάτη του, η παράδοση λέγει ότι γύρισε πίσω και ψόφησε. Τι θα κάνει και ο σημερινός ιερεύς, αν αναξίως φέρει τον Θεό του στα χέρια και μου τον μεταφέρει εμένα ή βγάζει τα Άγια ή κάνει κλπ.; Αν και αυτός ψοφήσει αθλίως, αυτό δεν το ξέρω εγώ, δεν είναι δική μου δουλειά. Εγώ σήμερα θα τον σεβαστώ, διότι μεταφέρει τον Θεό μου. Και εφόσον ο Θεός μου... Γιατί λένε ορισμένοι: «Εγώ δεν πάω να εξομολογηθώ. Λωλός είμαι; Ξέρεις τι κάνουν οι παπάδες;» Και τι θα κάνεις;
Ο τρόπος που χάνονται οι άνθρωποι: από προσώπου του Θεού φεύγουν. Και οι δίκαιοι που μένουν στην εκκλησία ευφρανθήτωσαν. Πότε γίνεται αυτό, Δαβίδ; Όταν αναστεί ο Χριστός. Δεν έχεις διαβάσει; Θα μου πει: «Τι γράφω; Αναστήτω ο Θεός και διασκορπισθήτωσαν οι εχθροί αυτού και φυγέτωσαν από προσώπου αυτού οι μισούντες αυτόν». Χίλια χρόνια γραμμένο προ Χριστού και εντούτοις ο άνθρωπος, αγκαλιά τη φιλενάδα του ή το φίλο της, φεύγει, ή ο άλλος, παρασυρώμενος από την κοιλία του, φεύγει για το σπίτι και εγκαταλείπει τον Χριστό. Αν νομίζουμε ότι είμαστε φίλοι του Χριστού, καλούμεθα να μην κάνουμε αυτό. Είναι ορισμένα περιστατικά που έχουμε δημιουργήσει εμείς στα σπίτια μας και αναγκαζόμαστε να φύγουμε. Βλέπετε, φέτος έχουμε και τον μνηστήρα, έχουμε και τον γαμπρό. Και ήρθε ο γαμπρός να σας διώξει από την εκκλησία. Τι τον θέλετε τέτοιο γαμπρό;
