Summary
Disbelief in the Resurrection often arises not only from rational doubt but also from guilt and fear of judgment beyond the grave. The myrrh-bearing women, the angels at the empty tomb, and Peter and John provide converging testimony that Jesus had risen. Christ’s Resurrection gives believers courage, reveals the grave as the beginning of another life, and anticipates the universal bodily resurrection portrayed in Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones.

The subject that holds the foremost place throughout the Christian world in these days is the Resurrection of Jesus.
The subject is still very fresh, we might say, and the wounds of Christ are fresher still. Yet for many people, the Resurrection—both the Resurrection of Jesus and the subject of resurrection more generally—
is, we might say, utterly absurd. I do not know why, but man
does not want the Resurrection, because he wants to submit everything to his own reason. Yet when it comes to the Resurrection itself, that is not the real issue. There is another reason that leads him astray and makes him reject the Resurrection. I remember reading something about a missionary effort. A missionary was speaking to a tribe of cannibals. He told them many things about religion, and among those subjects he introduced the most serious one of all: the Resurrection. He explained that a man’s story does not end at the grave, as some suppose. So he spoke about the Resurrection, saying that beyond the grave there is resurrection, and he offered as much supporting evidence as he could. But one of the natives, one of those cannibals, suddenly sprang to his feet and cried out in his own language, “Impossible!” The missionary was greatly astonished to hear the man insist, “Impossible! There will be no resurrection.”
[Unclear exclamation.]
“Do you have an argument for saying that it is impossible?” Again the man replied emphatically, “Impossible!” So the missionary pursued the matter, trying to discover why he was so insistent. What do you think the man finally answered? He reasoned as follows: “Because if there is a resurrection, as you say, then those whom I have eaten will also have to rise. And so, in the end...” The thought that he would be called to account for those he had eaten made him unwilling even to rise himself. If you ask someone, “Why do you doubt the Resurrection?” it is not merely because his reason cannot grasp it. It is his guilt that leads him to believe there is no Resurrection. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” There is nothing beyond. For if there is no life beyond the grave and no Resurrection, then why do we need moral teaching? Why do we need boundaries? Why do we need restraints? Everything is leveled and swept away. That is precisely what the devil wants. Christ, however, has established order and laws, and He requires us to keep them. According to how faithfully we keep them, there will be a corresponding reward and a corresponding degree of glory. He wants man to struggle; He wants him to contend like an athlete.
So the subject of the Resurrection is a thorn in Satan’s side, as we might say. For if death was defeated in the person of Jesus, then it will also be defeated in the persons of those who belong to Jesus. Death has no right to seize anything that is united to Jesus. It is therefore not in Satan’s interest to let this subject be discussed. You know, from the very first day a great deal of Jewish money was spent to silence the witnesses—the Roman soldiers who had guarded the tomb and had seen what happened—so that they would say Jesus had been stolen, rather than that Jesus had risen. That claim is repeated endlessly even to this day. But if a person considers how God dealt with the matter of Christ’s death, he will conclude from this that Christ truly rose, and then the matter becomes very serious indeed. To understand whether Christ truly rose, one must pay attention to what the providence of God brought about concerning Christ’s death and burial. For even the fact that Christ died is disputed. There are theories claiming that Christ did not die, but fell into a trance, and that afterward He was cared for and revived—came back to life, so to speak.
Many things have been said against the Resurrection of Jesus. One of the attacks on both His divinity and His Resurrection is the claim concerning where Christ was from the age of twelve until thirty. Because the Scriptures supposedly say nothing about this—although in fact they do—people send Christ outside Palestine during those eighteen years, perhaps to Egypt, India, and elsewhere. They claim that there He learned the skills of a fakir, enabling Him to be buried for a number of hours and then rise again.
But that claim also falls apart, as does the argument they put forward, because...
Fakirs are buried, it is true, perhaps even for more hours than Jesus was. Jesus remained in the tomb for thirty-three hours, whereas some fakirs remain buried for fifty, sixty, or sixty-five hours. Does that make them greater than Jesus? There is one crucial difference: a fakir is buried alive and, through training, makes use of the small amount of oxygen available. But what if Christ was buried dead? When the Roman soldier questioned whether Jesus was dead, he pierced Him with a spear, as you know—he pierced His side—and the eyewitnesses tell us that
blood and water flowed from His side. According to Simpson, the inventor of chloroform, the separation of serum from the blood is evidence of death. Pilate also questioned whether He was dead. “Could He have died so quickly?” he asked. Yes, He died so quickly because He died when He willed. They did not take His life from Him, as some suppose. People say, “The Jews crucified Him; He could not escape.” No! Christ came to His voluntary Passion, a Passion that brings redemption. Had He willed it, He could have come down from the Cross. Had He willed it, He could have escaped from the hands of the Jews. He surrendered Himself and died of His own will. And He died, as I told you on another occasion,
in the reverse order from the way a human being ordinarily dies. The Evangelists who witnessed these events tell us that Christ “bowed His head and gave up His spirit,” whereas we first give up the spirit and then bow the head. This proves that Christ died at the hour He willed and fulfilled what He had declared: “I have power to lay down My life, and I have power to take it again.” No one can take it from Me. Death has no authority over Life. Christ is Life; He is God, and death has no authority over Him. For this very reason, out of love for man, He willingly gave His life before they could break His legs. This proves that Christ died and was not buried alive like a fakir. It immediately overturns the entire theory that Christ learned some technique, applied it to Himself, and accomplished something similar.
Secondly, Christ was buried according to Jewish custom. That custom ensured that a body could not be stolen without leaving evidence of the theft. How did it do this? It lay in the way the Jews wrapped a dead body—a practice still followed today. Apart from modernized Jews, those who preserve their faith and tradition bury their dead as follows. They use myrrh and aloes, which form an adhesive substance. By nature, these two leave a residue like resin—like the pine resin familiar to us. The entire body of the deceased is coated with this adhesive mixture of myrrh and aloes and then wrapped in linen. As you can understand, this hardens like granite around the body. All the Evangelists report that the linen wrappings were found lying there—the very linens in which Christ had been buried. Think of Lazarus in Byzantine iconography: he comes out bound and wrapped from head to foot, and Christ says, “Unbind him; free him; loosen his hands,” and so forth. Christ was buried in the same way. Since He was buried with linen cloths fastened by this resinous substance made from myrrh and aloes, how could they have stolen Him? Did they not
take the linen with Him? Is it conceivable that men would go by night to steal the body and yet leave the linen behind? And how did they unfasten it? How did they remove it from the body of Jesus? Did they bring hot water and soak it? And for what purpose? Why would they remove it and leave it there? Go ahead, then—try to cover everything up and silence every mouth that would speak of Me.
“The stones will cry out.” The stones will speak; lifeless things will speak. And in this case, that lifeless evidence does speak. The face cloth was also found—the cloth tied around the head—“folded together in a place by itself,” carefully wrapped, as the historians report. This proves that Christ was not stolen, but rose and left these things there as testimony. Besides, what did the angels who were present there say? Did they say He had been stolen? What reason would the angels have had to say that He had risen? Whom would they be trying to deceive? Would God deceive His own creature? Why? Did He have any need to do so? Why would He? One need only think rationally.
The women went to anoint Christ with myrrh because they had been unable to go on Friday evening: the sun was setting, the Sabbath was beginning, and for them it was a day of rest. They had bought the spices, of course, but kept them and set out early on Sunday morning. On the Sabbath they neither traveled nor performed any work. So they went on Sunday, carrying the spices in their hands. As they walked, were they not asking one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us?” The stone placed at the tomb was very large. These women were not strong enough to move it. But an angel went before them, delivered them from this difficulty, sat upon the tomb, and said to them, “Do not be afraid. Whom do you seek? Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified? He is not here; He is risen.”
“Here is the place where they laid the Lord.” They ran to tell John and Peter, who also ran to the tomb and saw for themselves. This is what Luke speaks of when he says that “certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early,” went to the sepulchre at the first light of dawn. “They astonished us,” the disciples said. They told us strange things: that they had not found Him and that “they had seen a vision of angels,” who spoke to them there. What reason would the angels have to stage a lie? What reason would God have to stage a lie? Another measure taken by the providence of God to establish the authenticity of the Resurrection was that Christ was not buried
in a common tomb—that is, in a family tomb belonging to Joseph of Arimathea or to some other close relative according to the flesh. Instead, He was buried in a new tomb. Indeed, the Evangelist adds in parentheses that no one had ever been buried there. It was a new tomb—in the sense of completely unused and newly made. Christ was the first to enter it. It belonged to Joseph, who had prepared it as his own tomb and had hewn out his own burial place. Because it was the Jews’ Day of Preparation and there was no time on Friday afternoon to dig another grave, they used this tomb.
This too was an act of divine providence. Christ was buried in a new and previously unused tomb. There is a parallel to the burial of Jesus in the story of Joseph the All-Comely, who is in every respect a type of Christ. For this reason, the Church sets him before us on Great and Holy Monday, the first day of the Passion: “We commemorate Joseph the All-Comely.” Joseph was sold for silver by his brother Judah, just as Christ was sold by Judas, and he too was placed in an empty pit—an empty pit from which he came out. Afterward, he was sold into Egypt. The same pattern was fulfilled here.
Someone might ask, “Would it have been objectionable for Him to be buried in a family tomb?” People could then have slandered Him by claiming that Christ did not rise by His own power, but—if He rose at all—was raised by the power of some relics that happened to be in the tomb. For there was a resurrection—the second resurrection; no, rather, the third resurrection in the Old Testament—connected with the relics of the Prophet Elisha. The Prophet Elisha had died and been buried, and his tomb remained there.
Once, some people went to bury a man in the cemetery, as we would say. The situation was evidently dangerous—there were raiders or something of that sort—so they became afraid. Instead of calmly taking him to their own tomb and burying him properly, they hastily cast him into a nearby tomb and fled in fear. By coincidence, that tomb belonged to the Prophet Elisha. When the dead man touched the relics of the Prophet Elisha, he rose and walked. Because of this incident, and so that no one could claim that, even if Christ rose, He did not raise Himself by His own power but was raised by the power of another—as the incident involving Elisha in the Old Testament shows was possible—divine providence arranged beforehand that Christ should be buried in a new tomb.
No one had ever been buried there before that day. All these things, then—all the precautions they took—combine to assure us of the truth and certainty that Christ rose from the dead. And then there is what happened when the Jews went to Pilate. I do not know whether you noticed it at that point in the Church service. They said to him, “Sir, we remember that, while He was still alive, that deceiver said”—they call Christ a deceiver—“After three days I will rise.” So, they said, to prevent His Apostles, His disciples, from going and taking Him away, so that “the last deception will be worse than the first,” give orders for the tomb to be sealed. Then they will not be able to steal Him and afterward tell us that He has risen.
Is He a deceiver, gentlemen? Then what are you afraid of from a deceiver? But if He is not a deceiver, where do you think you are going, setting yourselves against God? Yet human beings are always inconsistent in their actions—especially when they fight against God. When a person fights against God, he becomes utterly irrational: so much error, so much spiritual blindness, so much foolishness. He is like a dog: you throw a stone at him, and instead of coming to bite the hand that threw it, he runs after the stone and bites that. That is how people are. In any case, Pilate’s answer was: “You have a guard. Go and make it as secure as you know how.” Take whatever measures you think necessary; put chains and locks on it, and so forth. So they went and secured the tomb with the guard.
How were the locks broken? How was the security put in place by the Jews, when they secured the tomb, breached so that Christ could be taken from within—stolen by His disciples? All these facts work against them. Through their malice, they did nothing but establish the authenticity of the Resurrection of Jesus. And yet, without examining the matter even a little, people readily ask, “And who saw Him rise?” So much is discussed and so much is said. Yes, but do the things being discussed and said even stand up to reason? For no such conclusion can be drawn from the texts. Do the texts not withstand scrutiny? And if we know that there was the fact of His death and burial,
The Resurrection, and so on—we know all this from the Scriptures. Holy Scripture tells us that they crucified Him; Holy Scripture tells us that they buried Him; and these same Scriptures tell us that He also rose. How, then, can you mutilate Holy Scripture, accepting whatever you wish to accept and rejecting whatever you do not? Either you must accept it in its entirety, or reject it entirely and say, “The whole account of Jesus is imaginary; it is a fraud, a delusion, and I do not accept it.” You cannot mutilate Holy Scripture without bearing the corresponding responsibility before it. And you know, the heretics did not succeed in altering it; they simply interpret it wrongly in their own way. Nor did its enemies succeed. If there is one book that has suffered abuse through the malice of Satan and his instruments down through the centuries, it is Holy Scripture.
It is the one book that continues not only to exist, but to multiply. Holy Scripture circulates in 1,500 languages and dialects. No work by any human being—not even all the wise men of the world together—has ever reached such a readership. Millions of copies circulate today, and even atheistic states distribute copies of Holy Scripture. If you read the statistics of the Bible societies that make these comparisons, you will be astonished that, in the midst of an utterly atheistic and materialistic twentieth century, so many millions of copies of Holy Scripture are in circulation. A person grows weary of everything and returns to his mother. He turns back again. This also reveals God’s great patient endurance: despite humanity’s great depravity, He still bears with it.
Many people return. The certainty of Christ’s burial, then, proves the truth of the Resurrection. For if Christ did not rise, everything is in vain. And if Christ is not God, there is nothing at all; life is not worth living. It is the Resurrection that gives a person courage to face life. Otherwise, all of us here would have lost our minds five hundred times over by now. You develop a slight fever of 37.1 degrees, and you lose heart; everything falls apart, and everything looks bleak. After two or three days at 37.1, you say, “Is this all there is? Is this all that…”
But that is not all there is. That belongs to this world. There is something else, which gives a person comfort deep within. Something speaks to him and tells him that things do not end here, that they do not end at the grave; there is something beyond it, and the grave is not the end, but the beginning of another life. This comfort given to man, then, is the hope of the Resurrection. And that is why you see people who have grasped this truth living differently and with greater peace, even though, in our eyes, their lives seem harder than ours, with all the comforts and conveniences we enjoy. And yet they experience life in a different way, because they have grasped its true meaning.
There is life beyond the grave, and man will rise again. This present life is not our true life. Paul, who reflected deeply on these matters, said, “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the city that is to come.” We seek the one that is to come. Man was not made for this world; he was made for that world. Of course, he passes through this life and is tested here, but there he will finally come to rest. The Resurrection of Jesus is Satan’s Waterloo—his utter defeat—as is the divinity of Jesus. These are the two decisive truths. If Christ is not God, there is nothing to speak of. If Christ did not rise, there is no Resurrection for us either. But Christ is indeed God, and He has risen. He is God, and the Resurrection is real. This is the foundation of man’s consolation.
The Resurrection of Jesus was the eighth resurrection the world had ever witnessed. I do not know whether you have ever counted the resurrections. The first was the resurrection performed by the Prophet Elijah,
at Zarephath of Sidon, where he was staying. His hostess’s son died, and he raised him from the dead. The second resurrection was performed by the Prophet Elisha, who raised the son of his hostess, the woman known as the Shunammite.
He
In raising this son, he acted in a mysterious way: he laid the dead child down with his arms outstretched, then stretched out his own arms and lay upon the child, face to face, hands to hands, body to body. He imparted warmth to the child, and the child came back to life. This is a type of humanity lying dead, which the crucified Jesus will give life to tomorrow and restore to life. The third resurrection ever to take place was the one I mentioned to you earlier, through the relics of the Holy Prophet Elisha.
The first three are in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the first is the raising of the widow’s son at Nain. Just outside Nain—which still exists as a small village in Israel today—the place where Christ performed this miracle is still marked. The funeral procession was coming out of Nain. This is the first such event in the New Testament and the fourth in order when counted together with those in the Old Testament. Then there is the daughter of Jairus, who was also raised by Jesus. This was the fifth in order and the second in the New Testament. And the sixth resurrection in order, and the third in the New Testament, is the resurrection of…
Lazarus, who had been dead four days, whom He raised after he had lain in the tomb for four days. This was a true burial and a true resurrection, for Lazarus was a real person whose existence is historically attested. These, then, are the six resurrections. The seventh resurrection is the one that took place at the Crucifixion of Christ. During the Crucifixion of Christ, when He said, “It is finished,” upon the Cross, the earth shook, the rocks were split, the sun was darkened, and so forth. As these signs took place, many bodies of those who had fallen asleep were raised and entered the Holy City. Notice one detail: this happened after His Resurrection.
They rose on Friday afternoon. The Jewish tombs were always outside the city, and even today they remain outside it. Anyone who had contact with a dead body, tended to one, or brought one out was considered unclean. He had to go to the Temple to be purified; this was prescribed by their ritual ordinance. So Lazarus remained in the tomb for four days and then rose. Indeed, his sister tried, in a way, to stop the Lord, saying, “Lord, he has been dead four days; his body is already decaying. Where are You going? Why do You command him to come out?” And Christ said to her, “Listen to Me. Wait there, as I told you, and you will see.” So, apart from Lazarus...
We see that they were raised and later appeared in the Holy City. For the Jews did not travel on the Sabbath; even after death, when they returned to life, they observed the Law. So it was after His Resurrection—that is, on what we call Sunday—that they entered the Holy City. The Holy City. This is the seventh resurrection. Scripture does not tell us how many people rose that day. It tells us that many tombs of those who had fallen asleep were opened, and that after His Resurrection they entered the Holy City. That is what Scripture says. This is the seventh resurrection, and the eighth is the Resurrection of Jesus. There is a difference between these resurrections. All the others were raised...
by the power of another. Christ, however, rose by His own power. Elijah prayed; Elisha prayed. In the other cases, the command was given: “Young man, I say to you, arise,” and, “Little girl, arise.” Everyone was commanded to rise—except Jesus. No one commanded Jesus, because He is God Himself. He gave up His life and took it up again; that is, He surrendered His soul and took it back again. These are the differences. And the matter of hope—of faith in the Resurrection—is so important that God has placed many signs even within the material realm, to help the person who seeks to understand the Lord’s spiritual workings, as well as bodily realities.
Take winter, for example. What is winter? Winter is death. What is spring? It is resurrection. If you observe the winter, you see everything dead. Take a knife and strike a tree: it says nothing to you; it neither weeps nor sheds tears nor feels pain—nothing. But go and pierce it now, in spring, and you will see it weep, flowing and giving forth sap. You who seemed to have no life in winter—how is it that you have life now? And why does this happen? To remind you, my king, that you too will pass through winter. Perhaps you will go beneath the marble tombstone, but one day there will be a resurrection for you as well. He who commands this so-called irrational nature to act rationally and to appear as though it were speaking,
a being endowed with reason. He has appointed me to do this and to remind you. What does a sleeping person do? He rehearses his death and his Resurrection. How many times have we already died? Someone may ask him, “How are you?” “What do you mean? I am alive.” Are you truly alive? Then why do you not hear when someone is robbing you? And why, then, do you say that sleep is death? You are indeed alive, yet you are both alive and dead, just as the dead person is both dead and alive. He does not hear or see, and so on. The soul still exists, but it is inactive. It is the same soul: here it is within the body, while there it is outside the body; here it is inactive, and there too it is inactive. The soul exists, and one day it will enter the body again.
A human being will become fully human again, whether he wants to or not. A few days ago, when the Epitaphios returned from the procession, did you notice the prophecy from Ezekiel that was read? Look in your service book at that prophecy from the thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel. Read it calmly and see what it says; see how we shall become human beings again.
Whom should we ask? Can you ask the scientists or the craftsmen? You can ask the One who made us. Did He need anyone’s guidance? Did anyone give Him the plans? Who gave Him the wisdom to create the world? He is the One who made it, yet we reject Him because we do not want to listen to Him—and that is not reasonable. How could it be? If a person is willing to bend down and look closely at everything happening around him, he will see that these things are mysteries.
Christ Himself tells us that sleep is death. Sleep is a mystery, and human death is just as much a mystery. Ask someone, “Is this person alive or dead?” He will tell you, “He is alive.” Then why does he not hear? He is dead. Then how does he breathe? It is a mystery. Sleep is a mystery; how much more is death a mystery! Yet He who explains the one mystery also established sleep, and the Church prays that God will grant sleep to man. And those of you who are scientists know what sleep means: it is the best medicine. It gives rest, brings relief, and renews a person. You lie down for ten minutes, holding your head in your hands, and rise with new strength. How did this cleansing take place? How did your mind and your nerves find rest
so that you rise a new person? What is this? What kind of mystery is it, and who can explain it? What is sleep? What happens during sleep, and how does the whole organism find rest, both spiritually and physically? How do the nerves relax and recover in only a few minutes?
Many times, when we have no time to spare, we say, “Let me get even five minutes of sleep.” It is a mystery. Death is likewise a mystery. Let us not doubt it, because then we would also have to doubt what we see and what our senses perceive. As I told you, there are many visible images that speak to us about spiritual realities. Take a grain of wheat. It is dry; you can grind it into flour and scatter it to the winds, and yet there is life within it. Though it appears dead, it is so hard that your teeth cannot break it.
It is alive. Put it under the right conditions, and you will see it sprout. Will you refuse to believe it? “Where were you?” one might ask it. “Where was your life?” It was where you too will be tomorrow, when people will say that you are lost. You tell me, “I have lost my loved one.” But what was your loved one? Was he a nail that you misplaced? Did God Himself die so that human beings might be lost? I ask you! And yet the person who claims to be so rational is often not rational at all. How can that be, when these simple things remind him and speak to him? How many times has the sun been buried? Suppose I had been born at ten o’clock at night, had never seen the sun, and had grown up instantly. If someone told me, “You know, in a few hours a great shining disk will rise out there and warm this place,” I would answer, “You are mad!”
He might go on describing the sun to me, but I would reject it. Why would I reject it? Because my own wisdom cannot comprehend the sun. Does not the sun die every evening and rise again in the morning? Have we not seen this so many times? And as we said, have we ourselves not died so many times in sleep and risen again so many times? Yet despite all these rational and material signs that meet his senses and help him from another direction, something restrains man, and he refuses to accept them. The grave is inseparably joined to the Resurrection. Black is joined to red, the Cross to red. Go outside during these Paschal days and take an anemone in your hand. Take an anemone,
what in ordinary speech is called a poppy. Open it and look inside. What will you see? A Byzantine cross—always Byzantine and pitch-black—with red surrounding it. The Crucifixion and the Resurrection. First the Crucifixion and then the Resurrection. First the Passion, and afterward the Resurrection. Everything speaks; everything speaks. It is a miracle. Why, then, does man continue deliberately to close his eyes? Because he does not want to see. That is why Christ spoke so truly, as you heard on the evening of Great Tuesday, when He delivered His final lament over Jerusalem: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” Not “you were unable,” but “you were not willing.” Man deliberately rejects faith; he rejects Christ Himself
and everything that proceeds from Jesus, because Jesus is the source of the entire created order, both the spiritual and the material world. That is precisely why Peter, who had grasped this truth, said, as Luke records in Acts 4:12: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” No one else can help us. There is only that name, that unique name, before which those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth tremble, and before which all bow the knee. Yet today we may be unable to take this truth into ourselves because of various factors
—indifference, ignorance, the flesh, the world, and other influences. But if we make it our purpose to learn about this Person… A man may learn everything else, but if he does not learn of this Person, he has failed from the outset. Even if he learns nothing else, if he comes to know this Person, he has succeeded. For you see, whatever a person achieves in this world is human and temporary; it passes away and is left behind. Imagine anything you like that he might securely accomplish here and from which he might gain the greatest satisfaction. The moment comes when even that withers away. Wise men have passed away, scientists have passed away, magnates have passed away, kings have passed away—names so great that the human nous reels before them. And yet…
What David said has come to pass: “I saw the man exalted like a flourishing laurel tree; then I turned my face away, and when I returned, not only did I fail to see him, but I could not even find the place where he had stood.” This is exactly the end of every human being, great or small, if he fails at this decisive point: coming to know Christ. Christ came here so that human beings might know Him. He also came to make His Father known. We have a Father who cares for us. We have One who desires man, who feels man’s pain, and who wanted to make Himself known to him. For those who received Him, this became a reality. For those who did not receive Him, it did not. That is why, as you see, He persists through various events. He speaks to us gently. At times He even shakes the earth.
“He looks upon the earth and makes it tremble.” At times there are illnesses and other such things. All these are means, ways of helping a person draw near—not out of compulsion. For often, because of some prejudice, we keep our distance from something beautiful. Take a certain food, for example. We may have a prejudice against it and refuse to eat it, though we have never even tasted it. Then some outside circumstance leads me to try it. My former opinion is overturned, and now I enjoy it; from time to time, one comes to delight in such a thing. The same happens in this case. A person sometimes needs to go even under pressure, as we say, because there is a short passage in the Gospel that says, “Compel them to come in.”
There is a popular saying: they offered a man one coin to join the dance, and he would not go in; then they offered him a thousand coins to leave, and he would not come out. Once he entered, he found it so delightful that even a thousand coins could not make him leave. This is what “compel them to come in” means. Many of us have not come to know the power one experiences—the blessedness, the unspeakable joy that cannot be put into words, written down, portrayed, or passed from one person to another. Christianity must be lived. That is why the Old Testament says in Psalm 33, “Taste
and see that the Lord is good.” No matter how often I tell you that honey is sweet, unless you put some on your own finger and taste it for yourself, my words are pointless. In the same way, no matter how much I tell you now that we need to believe in Christ with simplicity, He does not take away our money;
He gives us our husband, our wife, and our work. Who has forbidden us any of these things, provided they are lawful and moral?
So if I urge you, this is why: perhaps I may persuade someone to live this life and taste it. Then he will understand what it is. Then he will understand what it is. Once, some people were speaking about Christ to a woman
who did not believe. Later, she approached Christ for herself, and now she turns and says, “I have personal experience now. I no longer depend on you; I have my own understanding, and from now on I myself will bear responsibility before the One whom I have come to know.” So we must make the attempt, little by little, little by little. When the steering wheel of our life has turned far to the left, it takes corresponding turns to bring it straight again. We are not among those who have properly aligned their lives. Some have pulled the wheel far to the right, and others of us have pulled it far to the left. There are only a few poor souls who have created a religion of their own.
They must bring their steering wheel back and align it with Christ, with the Gospel, with this compass, with this North Star, so that their course may turn back toward Him. The farther people depart, the more they will destroy themselves. “Those who distance themselves from You shall perish,” it says. This is what Adam did. He distanced himself from God, rejected His counsel, and sided with another—the very one against whom God had warned him, even under penalty of death. Yet Adam did not heed the warning. And this tells each of us today what awaits us. The Gospel has its law; people have neither lived it nor will they live it. All the evils of the world, as I told you earlier, will remain
to convict us, and this shows that the Gospel is fashioned by God. The Gospel is not a human work. Human beings did not create it, nor did wise men compose it. That is why they have never succeeded in adding to it or taking away from it. In their malice, they simply misinterpret it. They take what was given for their benefit and use it for their own destruction. We were given a knife to cut bread, but we use it to tear out our own entrails or those of our neighbor. The knife is not at fault. It was given to serve us, not to destroy us. Among all the things we have discussed and all that concerns us today, this is the foremost matter, and it is a consolation to us. The first Christians regarded it as so serious that, until the Ascension, they replaced all their customary greetings.
There was no “good morning,” no “greetings,” no “good night,” and so forth. Instead, they said, “Christ is risen!” and the reply was, “Truly He is risen!” They always wanted everything to be connected with Christ. And to recognize one another, they used symbols of Christ. The lamb, for example: when you entered the catacombs, you would see a lamb painted there. Others carried an image of a lamb in their hand, made from whatever material they had; when they opened their hand, the other person understood that they were Christian. The fish was another symbol of Christ. Some made little fish. Others wrote the Greek word for fish, ICHTHYS, whose letters form initials referring to Christ.
“Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.” They took care that everything should speak of Him. When a man is in love with a woman, or a woman with a man, they always want to hear about the person they love, and they take delight in it. The same thing, of course, happens to an infinitely greater degree in souls that are in love with Christ as the Bridegroom. Throughout these days we repeatedly sang to Him, “I see Thy bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior,” and, “more beautiful than the bridal chamber,” and so on. But for most of us, these things are completely beyond us. We read them, of course, but they went right over our heads. Does a person ever understand them, or even care to learn what these things are that he chants and recites in church?
In any case, I say that if there is even the slightest interest, you know that He is the One who gives a thousand in return for one. He does not give merely one for one—do you understand? You put in one, and you will receive a thousand. So great is Christ, and so deeply does He care for man. Make a move; take one step. He showed us this in the prodigal son. What did the prodigal do? Yet the elder ran: “He ran and fell upon his neck.” This is Christ. So, if you who have just heard these words wish to learn a few things that will help you and give you rest both in this world and in the next, make it your concern to learn about Christ. Learn even a few things. Everything else will be useful only for earning a piece of bread and a roof over your head here. But this costs no pain and no money.
The most serious matter is for a person to learn even a few things about the risen Jesus. And so once again we shall say, “Christ is risen!”

το πνεύμα σου, τα νεύρα σου, και σηκώνεσαι καινούργιος άνθρωπος; Τι είναι αυτό το πράγμα, τι μυστήριο, ποιος το ερμηνεύει; Τι είναι ο ύπνος και τι γίνεται κατά τον ύπνο και με τι τρόπο ξεκουράζεται ο οργανισμός και πνευματικώς και σωματικώς; Πώς χαλαρώνουν τα νεύρα, ξεκουράζονται τα νεύρα μέσα σε λίγα λεπτά και μόνο;
