Summary

The pilgrims visit the Temple Mount, the Holy of Holies, the Pool of Siloam, and other Jerusalem sites associated with Christ, the Theotokos, and biblical history. Traveling north through Samaria, the pilgrims pass Bethel, Shiloh, Mounts Gerizim and Ebal, and Jacob’s Well, where Christ spoke with Saint Photini about living water and true worship. Around the Sea of Galilee, they recall the Beatitudes, the multiplication of loaves, Christ walking on water, the calling of the disciples, His appearance in John 21, Saint Mary Magdalene, and the wedding at Cana.

Dear listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord. By the grace of God, we are together once again to continue this account of our visit to the Holy Land.

This, the third talk in our series, finds us there at the Temple of Solomon, at what is known as the Mosque of Omar. Within the city walls, we see this Mosque of Omar,

where the Temple of Solomon once stood.

You should know that the Mosque of Omar stands roughly in the center of a vast area covering about thirty-seven acres. It is octagonal, with a gate at each of the four points of the compass. It is richly adorned and, as a work of art, fills the visitor with wonder. Its dome is immense and entirely covered in gold. Beneath it is a rock which the Jews believe was the threshing floor of Araunah. David bought it from the Jebusites, and there fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offerings

which the Israelites offered to God. About a hundred yards south of the Mosque of Omar, we see another building. This is the Holy of Holies. Emperor Justinian had built a church dedicated to the Meeting of the Lord there, but sadly it is now held by the Muslims. This place is truly holy. It filled us with the deepest reverence, because it brought back to our minds many events in the life of the Holy Family. As we know, the Theotokos (God-bearer) was brought into the Holy of Holies when she was only three years old, like a three-year-old heifer offered to God. There also, when the Lord was twelve years old, He was found by His Most Holy Mother and Saint Joseph,

teaching the scribes and Pharisees, as we know. It was also there that Christ later drove out those who were buying and selling, using a whip. Within the Holy of Holies there is also a fragment of the stone slab on which the Lord stood when, at the age of twelve, He was found teaching in the Temple.

In the courtyard there are several altars that were used for the sacrifice of animals in that sacred place, as well as a large basin. Proceeding south from the tomb of Zechariah, in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, we come to the Pool of Siloam. It was there that the Lord sent the man who had been blind from birth; when he washed, he received his sight, as the Gospel tells us.

There is still water at this place.

Near the Pool is a round hill on which stands the tomb of Isaiah, together with the place where, by order of King Manasseh, he was sawn in two. Farther down, the Valleys of Jehoshaphat and Hinnom meet. There we find the Well of Job, which still contains an abundance of wonderfully sweet water. Directly opposite, only a few minutes away on foot, lies the Potter’s Field, where Judas hanged himself. Above it we see the Holy Monastery of Saint Onuphrius, with his hermitage and the many tombs of the early Patriarchs of Jerusalem.

There are also many small holy places in the underground chambers.

It is said that the soil of this place is miraculous. As soon as it is cast upon the body of a dead person, the body immediately dissolves. Saint Helen, who evidently knew this, loaded entire ships—two hundred and fifty of them—with soil from this place and sent it to Rome. Twenty minutes from the Muslim mosque and the Holy of Holies, on the opposite side of the walls, further wonders await us. There we find the Upper Room, where the Mystical Supper took place; where the Lord appeared on the evening of His Resurrection while Thomas was absent; and where, eight days later, He appeared again with Thomas present. This is the Upper Room where the disciples had gathered for fear of the Jews, and where the Holy Spirit descended in the form of tongues of fire and bathed the Apostles in grace, transforming them from weak and fainthearted men into men of divine power and martyrs.

Dear friends, how could our knees not tremble when we consider where we are? There also is the place where the Theotokos fell asleep in the Lord. It was the house of Saint John the Theologian, who had taken her into his own home after the Crucifixion of her Son. Farther down, we come to the place where the Apostle Peter denied the Lord, as you know, and then went out and wept bitterly over his denial. Nearby also stands the first official Church, known as Holy Zion. To the east of Jerusalem lies the Mount of Olives. A person’s soul leaps within him at the sight of it when he knows something of its history, for it calls to mind so many events from the life of the Lord that are connected with the Mount of Olives.

From the middle of its central summit—one of its three peaks—the Lord was taken up in the Ascension. Saint Helen had built a church on that spot, but it was destroyed by the Persians. It was rebuilt and then destroyed once again, as happened to all the holy shrines. In the end, only an octagonal building about twenty-three to twenty-six feet in diameter remained. Sadly, it is now held by the Muslims, while our own clergy are permitted to celebrate the Divine Liturgy there on the feasts of the Ascension and of Lazarus.

In the floor of this octagonal building is a completely plain stone slab bearing the imprint of the Lord’s right foot. No one needs to assure us that this tradition is genuine, for the spiritual fragrance we experience dispels every doubt. South of the place of the Ascension, we come to the place where Saint Pelagia lived in ascesis, and where her tomb is found. You should also know that the northern summit of the Mount of Olives is called Little Galilee, because in the time of the Lord there was an inn there for visitors coming from Galilee. This is the place where the Lord first appeared to the Apostles. The spot lies within a holy church held by the Orthodox. Around the church stretches an immense area, and at one point we see something like a pavilion, which arouses our curiosity. Before long, however, we encountered yet another wonder.

This is the place where the Lord asked for and ate broiled fish and honey, so that after His Resurrection they would not think He was a ghost. Two stone pillars, still standing about twenty to twenty-four inches high and forming the remains of the table, confirm through their spiritual fragrance what we have been taught. About five hundred yards farther on stands a church dedicated to the Theotokos. At this place, the Lady of the world and Queen of the Angels used to pray. One day an angel of the Lord appeared to her there and told her that in a few days she would fall asleep in the Lord. On the outside, this church bears inscriptions that remind anyone passing by of this event.

Among them are the words, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” No matter how much one may say about this place, one could not describe even one percent of what truly takes place there, nor what a person feels upon arriving and remembering that it was there that the Queen of the Angels, I repeat, received the message of her coming departure while she was at prayer. Leaving that place, very near this church, we come to a most imposing Russian monastery. This is the place where the precious head of Saint John the Forerunner was found for the third time, for there were three findings of his head.

The solemnity and deeply contemplative faces of the nuns make you feel that you are in the company of angels. Leaving Jerusalem by its western side, dear friends, we come to the Holy Monastery of the Precious Cross. Tradition tells the following story about this place. After Lot sinned with his daughters and came to his senses, he was filled with compunction and went to seek the counsel of his uncle Abraham. When Abraham heard him, he gave him a severe canon, a rule of repentance. As a kind of chastisement, he sent him from Hebron to Jerusalem—the city was then called Salem—to plant three pieces of dry wood.

These were three staffs left to him by the three angels—the Holy Trinity, as we called them—whom he had received beneath the oak of Mamre. Lot was to water them until they sprouted. He obeyed, went there, and planted all three together. He tried to water them, carrying water every day from a great distance. But along the way the devil would spill it, and the water never reached its destination. Lot persevered until at last, after many years and very many trials, he succeeded in reaching the place and watering the pieces of wood, and they sprouted. They grew into one tree composed of three kinds of wood: pine, cypress, and cedar. This was the sign that God had forgiven him. When Solomon built the Temple,

the workmen cut down this tree as well, intending to use it somewhere in the Temple. They measured the place where they wanted to put the timber, measured the timber itself, and cut it to the proper length. Yet when they tried to set it in place, it would not fit. They measured it again. The measurements were correct, but when they placed it there, it still would not fit. “How strange,” they thought, and they tried again, but always with the same result. So they considered it accursed wood and threw it away. The story spread, and everyone knew about this strange piece of wood and treated it with contempt, even in later generations. Yet, strangely, it remained without decaying.

Then the hour came for the Lord to be crucified. They chose this despised wood because they thought it was fitting for such a man, and they crucified Him upon it. Thus we received the Precious Cross, now soaked in the blood of Jesus, the God-Man. In this monastery, beneath the holy altar of the church, is the place where that tree had been planted. The holy icons bear witness to the history of the tree. Among the frescoes in the Holy Monastery of the Precious Cross, we can even distinguish images of the philosophers Plato and Socrates. They too were depicted there because, as you know, they foretold the coming of our Lord to earth. South of the Holy Monastery of the Precious Cross, between the monastery and the Valley of the Giants, there is

Katamon is another holy monastery. The monastery’s name itself tells us what happened there: the Lord prayed alone, as Holy Scripture tells us. He had chosen that place because it offered hesychia, inner stillness. There was also the tomb of someone dear to Him, Saint Symeon, who took our Lord into his arms when His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, brought Him as a forty-day-old infant to the Church of the Meeting of the Lord, at the Holy of Holies. Oh, what joy for us! We too venerated the Saint’s tomb and asked him to intercede for us before the Lord, that we also might be counted worthy one day to say, “Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word...”

Let us now travel farther afield—to Galilee, to Tabor, to Gennesaret, and to Nazareth. My dear friends, the holy places are not found only in Jerusalem and around the city; there are also very many in other parts of that land. So, two days later, we left early in the morning by coach to visit Tabor, the Jordan, and other places. We were truly soaring with divine enthusiasm, yet we were also filled with anticipation, awaiting new wonders. And these did not await us only at our destinations; they began within the first few miles outside the city. By divine providence, the driver of the coach...

introduced himself as an Arab, a Palestinian, and an Orthodox Christian. Later, however, we came to understand that the Lord had sent him to us. He accompanied us on every journey outside the city and continually explained everything to us, wherever we happened to be. We had scarcely passed beyond the city walls when the driver began: “Look, this is the cave where Baruch slept for seventy years. His tomb is there.” As we traveled toward Samaria from the Mount of Olives, he showed us the place where the high priest Jaddua received Alexander the Great. Continuing on, we left far to our right the place called Jabesh-gilead, the homeland of Saul.

Soon we saw the hill of Gibeon, where Joshua the son of Nun said, “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the valley of Aijalon,” so that he might defeat Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem. It was there also that Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom. Before long we reached Ramallah, where the Church of Saint George stands. The priest there told us that the Muslims respect and fear Saint George and do not harm churches dedicated to him. For this reason, most churches in Palestine appear to be dedicated to Saint George, although in fact they belong to various saints. After Ramallah we came to the village of Bir, the ancient Beeroth, where the Theotokos and Joseph...

realized that Jesus was missing as they returned from Jerusalem, when He was twelve years old, as we read in the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. In former times there was a Byzantine church there, but now a mosque has been built upon its ruins. A few minutes later, there was Bethel, where Jacob slept while fleeing to Mesopotamia for fear of Esau’s wrath, and saw the ladder reaching to heaven. There Amos prophesied; there Samuel judged the people each year; and there Abraham parted from Lot. Then came ancient Shiloh, where Samuel the Prophet was born. There Joshua the son of Nun placed the Ark of the Covenant, and it remained for 328 years. There the aged Eli...

learned of the death of his sons, Hophni and Phinehas, and upon hearing the news, he fell and died. Before us stood Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, concerning which the Jews and the Samaritans disputed as to which of the two was the proper place to worship God. Joshua the son of Nun brought the tribes of Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin up Mount Gerizim to pronounce the blessings upon those who kept the Law. He brought the remaining tribes—Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali—up Mount Ebal to pronounce the curses upon those who transgressed the Law. Soon we reached ancient Shechem, today’s Nablus, built by Alexander the Great.

At one point we got off the coach and entered a monastery. In its courtyard we saw the walls of a church that had been under construction since the beginning of the century because of terrible difficulties; sadly, one might have thought they were ruins. In the middle stood two narrow, rectangular shrines, about two meters high and three or four meters apart. A narrow staircase led down into a small underground church. But what astonished us was a well inside one of the shrines. We were told that it was Jacob’s Well. At this very place the Lord spoke with the Samaritan woman, now Saint Photini, and the water is holy water.

Just think of that moment when... We were there, standing upon the ground where the Lord Himself had once stood, drinking from the water He had drunk. His words echoed in our ears: “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,” and, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.”

“Go, call your husband.” “You have spoken well in saying, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.” “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” “I who speak to you am He.” All these words flashed through our ears as though we were hearing them spoken. The ears of our souls heard His words, and with our eyes we saw the Lord and that Samaritan woman speaking together.

What did it matter that we could not see them with our bodily eyes? We felt no absence at all. I want you to know that... Not long ago, at this place, the Jews brutally murdered one of our own archimandrites, Father Philoumenos. Such things are grievous in our day, but this proves that we remain in our sins and will not be counted worthy to see matters as we ought, for Orthodoxy and for Hellenism. In any case, we continued on toward the region of Jenin. Once again, Antonis, our driver, had something to show us. There was the tomb of Joseph the All-Comely. “And now,” he said, “we will make a detour from the itinerary for your sake.” Leaving Nablus, we turned onto a dirt road. We went about five hundred...

or seven hundred meters, and he showed us a well. This was the pit into which Joseph’s brothers cast him before selling him to the Midianite merchants. “Look, the merchants came through this valley.” My God, my God, what are these things we are seeing? We had buried them far, far back in the age spoken of in Holy Scripture, yet You still preserve them and grant us their presence. We thank You, my God, with all our hearts. We thank You, my Lord; we thank You. “But what could these ruins be?” we wondered as we went a little farther. The explanation came before we could ask. Here were Roman buildings; here was ancient Sebastia...

the still more ancient Samaria, and there stood Herod’s palace. Look—there the accursed dance took place at the birthday feast, and the decision was made to behead Saint John the Baptist. Farther down, in the center of the present-day village, was the Saint’s tomb. Nearby were the tombs of the Prophets Elisha and Obadiah. Sadly, because of our unworthiness, the Muslims control these places. How sorrowful! Leaving Samaria for Nazareth, my dear friends, we saw the village of Jenin, the ancient Ginaea, where the Lord healed the ten lepers. Soon we came to the Valley of Jezreel and the village of Zerin, the ancient city of Jezreel, where Ahab...

had his palace, and from one of its windows Jezebel was thrown down. A few meters farther on, in a lush green plain, Antonis pointed something out once again: “Look at that large estate, where not even wild oregano will grow, as we say.” “What is that?” we wondered. It is the estate that Queen Jezebel unlawfully took from Naboth, and which the Prophet Elijah cursed so that nothing would grow there. That is why it is so barren. Many have tried to cultivate it, but in vain. Once again our thoughts flew back to the days of the lawless Jezebel, who so fiercely persecuted the Prophet Elijah, as you know—the man whose prayer could bind and loose the hands of God. Look: the consequences of her wickedness still remain after nearly three thousand years.

The Prophet Elijah is still alive; he did not taste death. See what love for the Lord can do! After the village of Zerin we came to the Spring of Harod, where Gideon, at God’s command, gathered the people and routed the Midianites with trumpets and pitchers. Soon we saw the village of Shunem, the ancient Shunam, where the Prophet Elisha raised the son of the widowed woman who had shown him hospitality...

And there was the village of Nain, where the Lord raised the widow’s only son. We shall stop here for today, and next time we will continue on to Tabor and beyond. May the grace of the Most Holy and Life-giving Tomb, of Christ at Golgotha, and of Gethsemane be with the whole world and with us. Once again, rejoice, brothers and sisters in the Lord! Dear listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord!

Once again, the good God has granted us to be together, so that we may say a few more words about the Holy Land. Those of you who were with us for the third part will remember that, at its conclusion, we said we would now continue around Tabor and the other places. Today is the fourth part, and we pray that God will help us. Continuing from the village of Nain, we saw before us a most beautiful little mountain. “Tabor!” cried the driver. I confess, all we could say was, “When will we arrive?” At last, we ascended to the summit.

A hieromonk, a young and energetic man, welcomed us warmly. With the eyes of our souls, we saw the Lord radiant with light, just as we read in Luke, with His disciples fallen prostrate before Him and Moses and Elijah standing on either side. Yes, we felt His presence. I want you to believe this. The distance of time did not hinder us. The only difference was that they had climbed on foot, while we went up by car. At such moments, my dear friends, a person does not think in ordinary, logical terms, because past and present can no longer be kept apart. I also want you to know that on Mount Tabor there was the cave of Melchizedek, king of Salem, where he met Abraham.

At an altar he offered the sacrifice of bread and wine, which was taken up into heaven. If you wish, read about Melchizedek in the fourteenth chapter of Genesis. You will see there that he was a clear type of our Christ: without father, without mother, and without genealogy, as Paul tells us so beautifully and concisely in Hebrews. Soon, as we descended from there, another joy awaited us: the Jordan. I dare say that we leapt from our seats the moment we heard its name. Its sanctified waters, dark because of their depth, flow swiftly in some places and gently in others.

We hurried down to receive some of the blessing that our Lord had surely left upon it. People go to the Jordan and perform the Agiasmos, the blessing of water. But why? Is its water not already blessed water? No matter where you take it from, it never spoils, just like all sanctified water. Why, then, do they bless the already sanctified water of the Jordan? I would like to know what more they can add. In any case, we do not interfere. We filled small bottles, drank, and refreshed ourselves. We remembered and were carried in spirit to the moment of the Lord’s Baptism, and with our spiritual eyes we saw Saint John the Forerunner...

hesitantly obeying and baptizing the Lord, while the Jordan turned back. Of course, this was not the exact place where the Lord was baptized, for that place is near the Dead Sea. But this did not affect us. In any case, we continued on. Farther down, there it was—the place so beloved by our Lord: the Lake of Gennesaret, also called the Sea of Tiberias or the Sea of Galilee. Here the Lord fished. And what did He catch? The fishermen who became His disciples. Here He repeatedly taught the crowds. And there was the Mount of Beatitudes. Thank you.

There were women and children as well. And He fed them all with five loaves and two fish. On this lake, my beloved, the Lord walked upon the water, even while it was stormy. When Peter saw Him, he too stepped onto the water and walked for as long as he kept his faith and his eyes fixed on Jesus. How many words resounded in our ears! How many miracles came to mind in those moments! They came flooding back. Opposite us was the country of the Gergesenes, where Jesus cast the demons out of the two possessed men and sent them into the swine. To the left, at the edge of the lake, were the ruins of Capernaum. Everything was gathered there. We remembered the centurion who begged the Lord to...

heal his servant, and his words: “I am not worthy that You should come under my roof; but only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” What heights of faith and humility! Where can such a thing be found today? Then the tax collector appeared in the depths of our minds—Matthew, at the place where the Lord called him: “Follow Me.” And afterward, in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat at table with Jesus. The Pharisees found an excuse to accuse Him, saying, “Your Teacher eats with tax collectors and sinners.” In Capernaum, you should know, there is a church on the site where they lowered the paralytic through the roof of the house in which...

the Lord was teaching. And somewhere there on the shore, the Lord made His third appearance to the disciples. They were fishing, and in the morning they saw Him standing on the shore. They recognized Him and hurried ashore. He asked whether they had caught any fish, and when they said no, He told them to cast their nets on the right side. They obeyed, and at once their nets were filled. But He had already prepared food: fish roasting over the coals, and bread as well. Read John, chapter 21, and you will see. Dazed and overwhelmed by their joy at having Him with them, they could not speak. And now the Lord’s words to Peter resounded in our own ears: “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these? Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”

Those words resounded within us, my beloved. On the way toward the Mount of Beatitudes, we came upon some ruins and a small chapel. “This is Magdala, Mary’s village,” the driver called out, “the village of Saint Mary Magdalene.” Here lived this young woman who had seven demons. After the Lord healed her, she never left His side, out of gratitude to Him. My beloved, this Saint has been accused most unjustly—and take careful note of this. People say that she was a sinful woman. What malice, truly! This chapel is dedicated to her. Saint Mary Magdalene was never a sinful woman. She was possessed by demons; she was afflicted.

He cast the seven demons out of her, yes, but she was not a sinful woman. In any case, there is also a monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene in Galilee, held by Russian Orthodox Christians. In the city of Tiberias, a most beautiful city, there is the Monastery of the Holy Apostles, which is being restored. A few miles farther on, we finally reached Cana, the village of Nathanael. We almost expected to see him again beneath some tree, just as our Lord saw him when He said, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Once again, the words of the Most Holy Theotokos resounded in our ears: “They have no wine,” and, “Whatever He says to you, do it,” together with the words of our Lord, who said...

“What is this to Me and to you, woman? My hour has not yet come.” “Fill the water jars with water,” and so forth. All these things passed through our minds like scenes in a film. Then we thought of the Most Holy Theotokos’s victory: through her intercession and entreaty, she changed the course of His miracles. For Christ had said that He did not intend to begin His public ministry and His miracles at Cana of Galilee. Yet the Most Holy Theotokos prevailed in this instance, and from this we understand how great her boldness before Christ is. We thought of the satisfaction of the Most Holy Theotokos when her Son delivered both the hosts and the guests from their predicament, though they paid no attention to the miracle. But as we reflected on these things...

we discovered something else as well. This miracle was not the first that our Lord performed, as I told you. If He had never performed miracles before, how could the Theotokos have asked such a thing of Him? Therefore, she knew who He was; it was only the world that did not know.

We also marveled at His love and obedience toward His mother. As I said, He had not intended to perform a miracle, yet for her sake He did not follow His own will. We got off the bus and went into the church. Another surprise awaited us. Two of the stone water jars from that time still remain. We then felt as though the wedding banquet were taking place at that very moment, and we could see the movements of everyone present—our Lord and His mother among them. Then...

Then... while we were still trying to set this astonishing experience in order within ourselves, we set out again toward Nazareth. After five or six miles, we entered the city. We had expected to see a little village, but it is an entire city, with 165,000 inhabitants. Our minds were filled with thoughts of the life of the Holy Family there. For I want you to know, my beloved listeners, that Nazareth, if we wish to put things in their proper order, is the first blessed city in the whole world. There God first revealed Himself out of love for mankind, coming as a man. Afterward came the events of...

the Nativity in Bethlehem, and the Crucifixion and the Resurrection in Jerusalem, which are in no way lacking in glory, majesty, or blessing. But if we wish to say where the mercy and love of God first appeared, we find that it happened in Nazareth. We must therefore give Nazareth its proper place in our hearts. Joseph the Betrothed was there with his carpenter’s workshop, and the Theotokos was in the house, filled with wonder at her Child. She believed that there was something divine within Him, since she had conceived and borne Him in so extraordinary a way. Yet even her human mind found it difficult to comprehend that He was God. My God! The Lord submitted to His mother and to Joseph, His guardian, whom the world regarded as His father. We see Him in Joseph’s workshop...

in the house beside His beloved mother, and regularly in the synagogue. As a young man He was tall and brown-haired, as the historians tell us, always solemn, with a special radiance. He was saddened by what He saw in other people, yet gentle toward everyone and loved by all—especially by the sick, the poor, the weak, and little children. He never missed an opportunity to help them. He lived there for about thirty years, my beloved. But instead of this helping the Jews understand who He was, they hated Him all the more. In any case, we got off the bus and entered a church. Once again, my beloved, it struck us like a thunderbolt. Yes, like a thunderbolt. Inside, we descended four, five, perhaps even ten steps.

And there we were, in the very synagogue that the Lord Himself regularly attended. Where could we stand? He Himself had stepped upon every inch of that place. But what was this water inside? Yes, it was true. Even before the Lord was conceived in His mother’s womb, the synagogue was here, and the Most Holy Theotokos, while still a maiden, would come and draw water to take home—to the house of Joseph, who was also her guardian. Here at this spring, the priest explained, a momentous event took place. Here Gabriel appeared and brought the message from God concerning the Incarnation of His Son. This is the place of the Annunciation, the spot where the Pure Maiden, the Virgin Mary, conceived the Only-Begotten Son of God.

My God, my God, once again! How do You endure us and allow us to tread upon this place? Here the mouth is struck silent, my beloved, and the mind hovers briefly in the present but far more in the time of the Lord. Farther down is the synagogue where the Lord, standing among the scribes and Pharisees, read from the book of Isaiah the passage that spoke about Him. They were reproved and sought to destroy Him, driving Him outside the city and intending to throw Him from an exceedingly high cliff—which we also saw. But He passed through their midst without their touching Him. If anyone wishes to read this account, open the Gospel of Luke, verse 16.

There you will find a Gospel reading, a passage taken from Isaiah, chapter 61, which our Holy Church, I want you to know, reads on her New Year—not on the feast of Saint Basil, because Saint Basil’s day is not the Church’s New Year. The Church’s New Year is September 1, the first day of the Indiction. Look in your service book, your Book of Hours, or your collection, and you will see that it begins on September 1, not January 1. In any case, I shall continue. A little farther on, up to the right, there was the house where the Holy Family lived. It has been made into a church and is held by the Latins. As we left the city, we saw the plain of Armageddon mentioned in the Apocalypse.

There were ruins of one of the three cities built by Solomon. The driver kept pointing things out and telling us about them. But how could anyone retain it all? It seemed as though the whole of Holy Scripture had been spread out beneath us, and we were passing through every one of its words. Wherever you stepped, you did so with reverence, because at every spot some event, great or small, had taken place. The Old Testament and the New Testament were interwoven in all these emotions. We returned, rested, and recovered our composure; then, on another day, we set out for Bethlehem, ancient Ephrathah, where David was born. In that region, of course, we saw other places as well...

including the Monastery of Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch, the Monastery of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, and others. We were now preparing ourselves for still more moving experiences, and they soon came, one after another. We had scarcely left Jerusalem when there was the tomb of Samuel, and the place where he anointed Saul as king. A few more miles, and another overwhelming experience: the Monastery of the Prophet Elijah. This is the place where the angel awakened him and gave him food. After eating it, he departed for Sinai and walked for forty whole days in the strength of that food. On one stone there is also the imprint he left while sleeping...

There are small imprints like those of children, and one large one. There is also a piece of Saint George’s chain inside this church. South of the Monastery of the Prophet Elijah lies the Field of Chickpeas. You may know what tradition tells us. It says that when the Lord was once passing near this field...

He saw a man sowing and asked him what he was planting. The man mockingly replied, “I am sowing stones.” Then the Lord answered, “Whatever you sow, that you will also reap.” Indeed, when harvest time came, the man found an abundance of stones, small like chickpeas. Even today the field remains barren, and the stones found there are shaped like chickpeas.

A few minutes later, we got off the bus once again to taste new spiritual delights. My beloved, we were at the Monastery of Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch. I admit that we had read many things about this Saint. But how could we ever have imagined that we would also find ourselves in his lavra? And again, what did we hear and see? In the courtyard of this monastery is an underground cave where the Magi lodged while returning from Bethlehem to their own country by another road, so as to avoid Herod, whom they had left behind, as you know. The cave lies outside the church, and within it are the tombs of Saint Theodosius and his mother, Evlogia...

of the mother of Saint Sabbas; of Saint Mary, the wife of Saint Xenophon and mother of Saints Arcadius and John; and of a Russian princess, Saint Evlogia. Naturally, we left filled with joy and longing for something new that would bring still more wonders. A short distance away, we heard the driver call out, “The field of Boaz, where poor Ruth gathered ears of grain for herself and her mother-in-law.” And there was the field of the shepherds, where, on the Holy Night of the Nativity, the angels brought them the joyful tidings and ascended and descended from Heaven, singing, “Glory to God in the highest.” In the early years, a great church stood in that place. But now, after repeated destruction...

There is now only a small chapel, and extraordinary efforts are being made to restore and rebuild it. We are told that the Monastery of Saint Theodosius will undertake this work. From the Monastery of Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch, Bethlehem lies before us. What joy and deep emotion we feel! Before reaching it, however, several more surprises await us. We turn aside from the road to Bethlehem and descend into the desert. Deep below, in a valley, after about twenty kilometers, we come upon the Monastery of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. What majesty! Women are not permitted to enter this monastery.

It stands in a remarkable ravine, an extension of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, through which the so-called Brook Kidron flows. Its waters are black and foaming. In the year 614, the monastery had five thousand monks within its walls and outside in the caves, as well as another ten thousand. Today it has only ten or twelve monks. The holy relics preserved there are innumerable, but the great Saint of the monastery is Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. His tomb and his hermitage are there. The tomb of Saint John of Damascus is also there—that great hymnographer of our Church and writer on doctrine.

Descending from the Tower of Eudokia, which stands opposite the monastery, toward the Brook Kidron—a descent of about four hundred steps—we find the holy spring of Saint Sabbas. No matter how much water anyone takes from this spring, the surface of the water neither falls nor rises. It always remains at the same level. However much water is drawn, and however many people draw from it, its level neither rises nor falls. From this, and from the place where the water emerges—a place for which there is no natural explanation—one can understand that this is a continuing miracle. Before bringing today’s talk to a close, I would like to tell you something about the holy relic of Saint Sabbas, which, of course, we found there and venerated.

For many years, this relic was held by the Latins. In recent years, Saint Sabbas appeared to the Pope there and, with a warning, demanded that he be returned to his home. ‘Return me—send me home quickly, or I will bring great harm upon you.’ The Pope became afraid and notified the late Benedict, Patriarch of Jerusalem, asking him to send a delegation to receive the Saint. And indeed, representatives of the Patriarchate went in haste to receive his holy relic. They also brought Orthodox vestments with them and wished to change his clothing—to remove the papal vestments he had been wearing there and clothe him in Orthodox vestments.

And it is said, my beloved, that the Saint raised his arms by himself, helping them to clothe him in the Orthodox vestments. They brought him back, and he remains there to this day; and in recent years we have been counted worthy to venerate him for the sixth time. Once again I pray that the Holy God, through the power of the Holy Sepulchre and the grace of the Crucified Lord, and through the blessing of Golgotha, Gethsemane, and Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, may have mercy on us and bless us, and may wait patiently for us; and that we, for our part, may repent, make our confession, and change our lives, so that one day we may find Him there above. This is what I wish for one another and for everyone. Amen. Once again, rejoice in the Lord.

We shall continue again next time, God willing.
