Summary
The speaker invites listeners on a spiritual pilgrimage through Jerusalem, recalling the biblical history of the Holy Land and his arrival through Jaffa Gate. At the place where Saint Helena found the True Cross and upon Golgotha, the pilgrims contemplate Christ’s Crucifixion, the repentant thief, the rock’s fissure, and the Chapel of Adam. The pilgrimage concludes as an encounter with the living reality of Christ’s Passion, burial, and Resurrection that calls believers to repentance and renewed faith.

Beloved listeners in Christ, what you will hear today concerns the Holy Land. God has granted us the grace to visit this land trodden by God many times, and many of our listeners have urged us to describe our impressions—what we saw and heard—if possible both in a book and on cassette, because many people are unable to read.
They will be able to listen, whether because they are ill, because their eyesight does not permit them to read, or for many other reasons. So, with God’s help, beloved—and as most of you know—we are drawing upon what we have written on the subject. We intend to speak about it as well and include it on one or two two-hour cassettes. In other words, over four hours, we hope to help those who long to go but cannot, by taking them there in spirit.
Whatever we may say can never take the place of actually being there. A person must be counted worthy to reach that land—to see, to hear, to taste, and to breathe in something of the events that took place there thousands of years ago and continue to move every believer. Like every Christian, whenever we heard or read Holy Scripture, our nous, our spiritual mind, would fly far back to the places where the Lord lived as a man, to that land where so many wondrous things occurred.
We would also think about the events that took place before the coming of Christ: the Israelites, Abraham, the Prophets, the wars, and Moses. How could anyone bring all this to life again? We would say, “What a pity that we cannot see something of the setting in which those events occurred.” Of course, we longed to visit those places—not because we expected to see anything that had remained unchanged from two thousand years ago, but simply to spend a little time in that land, in the very places where it all unfolded. Then suddenly, without much planning, we found ourselves in Israel. A car took us from Tel Aviv Airport up to Jerusalem. When we reached the Holy City, it stopped before some immense walls, and the moment we saw them we were stunned. “What are these?” we asked. “The walls of the Old City,” an Arab driver answered, “and this is Jaffa Gate. To the right of this gate stood David’s palace.” Beloved, what we felt cannot be described. We felt as though we were living in two ages at once: the age of David and the present day.
We had seen the walls of Jerusalem in photographs, but we had never realized that they still stood today. As we made our way into the city, we found ourselves among a vast crowd of every kind: Arabs, Europeans, Jews, Ethiopians, Russians, and Americans. All these people mingled together and moved through Jerusalem’s narrow, paved lanes, among ancient buildings and tiny shops—little holes in the wall, one might say—selling souvenirs, most of which recalled events from the New and Old Testaments. Leaving those souvenir shops behind,
we went on to our rooms and settled in. Almost everyone’s first thought was to hurry to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and venerate the Holy Sepulchre itself. After passing through a large iron gate and descending a few steps, we came into a courtyard. To our left, an open wooden door some five or six meters high helped us get our bearings and understand that this was the entrance to the holy church. I confess that we went forward with feelings of fear, but also of joy and deep emotion.
A Jewish military guard at the entrance emphasized the solemnity of the place. About five or six meters inside, we saw a reddish stone slab roughly two meters long and seventy to eighty centimeters wide. A row of oil lamps hung above it. A young Orthodox priest who was there hurried to welcome us and explain what we were seeing. “This is the holy Stone of the Deposition,” he said. “Here they laid the body of our Lord after taking Him down from the Cross.” Then he pointed upward and showed us Golgotha.
To say that we were struck by lightning would be an understatement. Our eyes immediately filled with tears, and our hands and lips found their way to that holy stone, caressing and kissing it as though it were the very body of Christ our Redeemer. When we had recovered a little, we hesitantly told the priest that people should not be permitted to put perfume on these holy places. He smiled and, indulgent toward our ignorance, said, “The fragrance is not made by man, beloved. It is divine and comes forth from the stone by itself. No one puts it there.”
We were overwhelmed. What was this now? What a powerful testimony to the authenticity of Orthodox Tradition! In any case, the priest invited us to follow him and led us to the left, into a deep, broad, dimly lit passageway. Ahead of us, on the right, rose a huge dark structure, five or six meters high and seven or eight meters long. The priest saw the question on our faces before we could utter it and said, “The Holy Aedicule of the Holy Sepulchre.” We could not breathe.
I want you to believe me. As we followed him, we felt our legs trembling. Entering, we stood in an antechamber about two by three meters. In the middle was a square stone like a table—or perhaps, one might say, like a chalice—about twenty-five by thirty centimeters and roughly sixty centimeters high, with glass over its surface. Once again, the priest anticipated our question and told us, “This is part of the stone that the angel rolled away.” New wonders, new waves of emotion. As we venerated it, we felt as though the angel were watching us.
Our legs could barely support us, and our awe grew greater, beloved. This is the entrance to the Holy Sepulchre that I am describing to you. The priest then showed us the low, narrow opening behind the holy stone. To describe what we felt at that moment is extraordinarily difficult—or rather, impossible. Only those who have experienced such feelings can understand. And those who, by God’s blessing, may one day experience them will understand why we speak as we do now. So, a few at a time, each in turn, we knelt before the Holy Sepulchre and leaned upon it, allowing all the love within us to pour forth,
along with fear, guilt, hope, and the awareness of our unworthiness before the Lord, each of us weeping silently. Beloved, the hard, cold marble slab seemed soft and warm to us, like a human body—like the all-pure body of our Christ. At one point the priest, speaking gently and quietly out of reverence for the place, called to us and said, “Come now, because others must enter and venerate as well.” The truth is that when a person enters the Tomb of Christ, he loses all sense of everything else and imagines that he is there alone.
He knows that so many people are waiting anxiously outside and that forgetting them is neither Christian, nor humane, nor courteous—and yet we forgot. “Come now,” the priest said, “because others must enter and venerate as well.” Indeed, the space was narrow; it could scarcely hold four or five people. We backed out very slowly, as though turned to stone. I confess that we could not see what was around us—or rather, we could not comprehend what was happening or where we were. Our minds could not contain the reality that we were standing where the God-Man Jesus, our Lord, had been buried and had risen.
All thought had ceased, and the only words circling in our minds were, “My God, my God, my Lord,” though not for any particular reason. Anyone who had died at that moment would truly have been enviable. Before we had fully recovered, beloved, the priest—always understanding our spiritual state—pointed a little to the left. “At this spot,” he said, “our Lord appeared to Saint Mary Magdalene, and it is called ‘Do not touch Me.’” At that moment the thought crossed our minds that perhaps the Lord was somewhere nearby and would appear to us as well.
We felt as though we were living through the moments that Saint Mary Magdalene had experienced in that very place. Directly opposite the entrance to the Holy Sepulchre stands the majestic holy church of the Orthodox. It should be noted that the great Church of the Holy Sepulchre contains not only our Orthodox church, but also the churches of the Roman Catholics, Armenians, and Copts, situated on either side of the Holy Aedicule. As we mentioned, the church was undergoing restoration. Beloved, tremendous effort and labor are required to accomplish even the simplest task in these holy places. Sadly, its many enemies remain constantly watchful and seek by every means to continue
suppressing the truth and obstructing the work being done there. In any case, as we entered the Orthodox church and walked some three or four meters, we saw a large stone object resembling a chalice, forty or fifty centimeters high, very wide and open at the top, with a circular surface. This stone is part of the column to which Pilate had the Lord bound and scourged. Tradition, however, tells us something else as well: at this spot there was once a hole whose bottom no one could find.
It was regarded as the navel of the earth. It is said that in the absolute stillness of the night, strange divine chanting—or even weeping and lamentation—could be heard coming from this hole. Those who heard it, however, were afraid. For that reason, at the beginning of the present century, they sealed it by placing over it this piece of the column to which the Lord had been bound. They carved the circular upper surface in the form of a cross with equal arms. Between its arms they placed metal strips about two centimeters wide, which also formed an equal-armed cross. At its center was a round metal plate three or four centimeters in diameter. The elders there told us something strange about this cross.
Before every major calamity that was about to befall Christians, one arm of the metal cross would mysteriously disappear. Its fourth and final arm disappeared in 1974, on the eve of the Cyprus conflict, before the Turks landed in Cyprus.
Only the center remains—the circular piece—and they believe that if this also disappears, the greatest catastrophe in the world will occur. Let us pray that this never happens and that it is merely a tradition. In any case, as we left the holy church, the priest led us behind the Holy Aedicule,
opposite the Coptic church, and showed us the tombs of Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who buried the Lord. They are simple, cave-like tombs. Yet those whose bodies rested within them must surely be greatly blessed. What an honor for them to have been buried so near the life-giving Tomb, while their souls rest in the embrace of Him whom they themselves embraced when they took Him down from the Cross and buried Him. May we have their prayers. Moving on in silence—daring to say, almost without wills of our own because of the depth of our emotion—we walked to the left and around the front of the Holy Aedicule. On our right was the Orthodox church, and on our left the Latin church. At the far end of the passageway ahead, new and transcendent experiences awaited us:
the place where they had imprisoned the Lord before He was crucified, and where the Theotokos later saw her Son upon the Cross and fainted. We felt a powerful constriction in our hearts. Our tears, I confess, multiplied. A little farther ahead, on our right, we came upon a tragic place. There were two holes in a metal plate, each about the width of a palm. They had seated our Lord there and placed His feet in those holes, so that whenever they beat Him and He moved, the sharp metal cut His holy feet around the ankles. This is called the Chapel of the Stocks. For a moment, our hearts were truly flooded with hatred for His tormentors,
but it was very quickly overcome by the awareness of our own guilt before the love the Lord showed then, and still shows, toward us. Do we not do the same things to Him today through our sins? Finally, as we continued around the outside of the Orthodox church toward the sanctuary, we came to a chapel dedicated to the centurion called Longinus. A little farther on, we saw the place where the soldiers cast lots and divided the Lord’s garments. Continuing on, still to the left, in the middle of an apse we saw part of the stone column where the Lord was scourged before the Crucifixion and crowned with thorns. With profound reverence, we venerated it...
We were not surprised by the fragrance that poured forth from this column as well, for by then we understood what was happening. A little farther ahead and to the left, we descended a broad stone staircase. To the left of the stairs we passed a small church of Saints Constantine and Helena, which is held by the Armenians, and after descending a few more steps we came to another stone slab. Once again, the priest anticipated our question: “This is the place where the True Cross of our Lord was first found by Saint Helena.” Every doubt vanished because of the fragrance. It was always the same, though some perceived it strongly, others faintly, and still others not at all. There is no denying that a man-made fragrance does not have such properties.
To the left, we saw the place where Saint Helena stood and urged the workers to keep digging, throwing them money from there to encourage them. We climbed the steps again and continued on, now with the Orthodox church on our right. On our left, we found a barred door. The priest led us through. There stood the rock of dread Golgotha. Once again, we felt a powerful constriction in our hearts. Before we had time to gather our thoughts, we saw a steep, straight stone staircase with fifteen or seventeen high steps. The priest went up first, and we followed, speechless. We found ourselves before a church without an iconostasis. The priest went forward,
knelt beneath the Holy Table, venerated the place, then rose and invited us to do the same, saying, “Dread Golgotha. Here is the hole in which the Cross of the Lord stood.” O my God, my God! How can anyone describe what the heart longs to proclaim? How can I convey to you, my beloved, what a person feels when brought face to face with this reality, when standing in that very place? There are no words equal to it; let us not deceive ourselves. My beloved listeners, let each of you consider it as the Lord grants you illumination.
Every description is bound to fail. To the right of this Holy Table on Golgotha is the fissure that opened when the Lord gave up His spirit, and behind it, one on either side, are the two holes where the crosses of the two thieves stood. Above the Holy Table hang countless vigil lamps that are never extinguished. Behind it stands an immense cross bearing the image of the Lord, with the Theotokos and Saint John on either side. By then, I confess, our legs could no longer support us. We felt the Lord’s gaze from the Cross fixing us to the spot. We relived the moments of the Crucifixion, suffering because we could not help the Lord. We heard the thunder and saw the cowardly fleeing, the hard-hearted jeering, and others beginning to wonder.
We sat down for a while so that we would not fall, and when we had recovered somewhat, we descended. Beneath Golgotha is the Chapel of Adam. Tradition says that Noah placed Adam’s skull there, and for this reason it is called the Place of the Skull. It lies directly beneath the place of the Lord’s Crucifixion, and the fissure in the rock caused by the earthquake at the hour of the Crucifixion can still be seen. It is even said that the Lord’s blood reached that place and washed the skull—meaning that, in a certain way, it brought forgiveness to Adam. From one side of the chapel, we entered the office of the sacristan, where precious sacred treasures and relics of saints are kept. As we left the office, we once again saw the Stone of Unction, and the exit was to our left.
Our guide still had something more to tell us. He pointed to the exterior of the entrance, where three columns stand on each side. The middle column on the left as one enters the church has a crack near its base, about half a meter long. Our guide asked us, “Do you know that every year, at noon on Great Saturday, the Holy Fire comes forth at the Holy Sepulchre? Thousands of pilgrims witness it—Armenians, Copts, and Orthodox—except for the Catholics, who do not accept it.”
As can plainly be seen, the crack had been caused by a thunderbolt. We had heard of the Holy Fire, but we knew nothing specific about it. The priest realized our ignorance and explained exactly what happens: the guards there, Jews and others, physically search the Orthodox bishop before he enters the Holy Aedicule. An Armenian bishop enters with him to observe the Orthodox bishop. No vigil lamp is left burning inside the Holy Aedicule. First, moisture appears upon the surface of the Holy Sepulchre, and then the Holy Fire appears. It is blue in color and, for quite some time, does not burn. It pours forth from the Holy Aedicule, and everyone sees it. Naturally, my beloved, we were thunderstruck. He told us other things concerning the Holy Fire, but there is not enough time today. Please allow us
to return and continue this account. In any case, we pray that the grace of the life-giving Tomb, dread Golgotha, and the True Cross may have mercy on us and bless us, and may be with the whole world and with us. Amen. Rejoice in the Lord. My beloved listeners in Christ, once again, rejoice in the Lord. The good God has granted that we should be together again and continue our account of our impressions from the Holy Places. Those of you who were with us for the first part will remember.
We had reached that point in our account. Our guide was speaking to us about the Holy Fire.
He explained that the Orthodox bishop is physically searched before entering the Holy Aedicule; that an Armenian bishop enters with him to observe the Orthodox bishop; that no vigil lamp is burning inside the Holy Aedicule; that first moisture appears upon the surface of the Holy Sepulchre and then the Holy Fire appears, blue in color and, for quite some time, not burning; and that it pours forth from the Holy Aedicule before the eyes of everyone. Continuing, he told us something else there at the entrance, as follows:
In the year 1584, the Armenians could no longer bear to see the Orthodox always receiving the Holy Fire. After killing the monk who guarded the Holy Sepulchre, they closed the main entrance of the church. They remained inside, while our people were left outside. At noon on Great Saturday, when our Patriarch arrived from the Patriarchate with his procession to receive the Holy Fire, they could not enter and remained in the church courtyard, outside the gate. Inside, the Armenians naturally prayed for a long time in their own manner, but our Christ did not give them the Fire.
“Our Patriarch,” our guide said, pointing, “was here, beside this column at the door, standing sorrowfully near it with the others. Then a mighty peal of thunder was heard. The column split at this spot, and a flame of light burst forth and lit the candles the Patriarch held in his hands. He then gave the Holy Fire to the pilgrims. The Armenians were utterly defeated and never again dared to claim it.” While we are on the subject, my beloved listeners, let me also tell you that the Turkish guard who saw the light come forth from the column and be received by the Orthodox Patriarch cried out in his own language:
“This is the true Allah; this is the true God!” And they killed him. To the right of the doorway through which we enter, traces of his blood still remain on the ground, bearing witness to the event. The snow-white relics of this Turkish martyr are kept at the Monastery of the Great Panagia, only a few meters from the Holy Sepulchre. When we heard these things, we felt indescribable exultation that our faith is the only true faith, because the Holy Fire is received only by the Orthodox. This is proof of the authenticity of our faith.
I believe that the Lord shows partiality toward no one and has no reason to hide the truth from others. Yet our curiosity and interest in this matter grew. Whenever we visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre afterward, we never missed the opportunity to ask others there about the Holy Fire, especially the guardians of the Holy Sepulchre, who would know more than any of the other witnesses. One day, an elderly elder named Mitrophanis, who had guarded the Holy Sepulchre for more than fifty years, told us the following: “When I came here from my homeland, Pontus, my children,
to venerate the Holy Places, I was bound to them by the love I felt when I came to know them, and I remained here forever. I became a monk, and God even granted me this great gift: to become the guardian of the Holy Sepulchre, the Tomb of His Son. During the first two or three years,” Elder Mitrophanis continued, “I watched the Holy Fire with great wonder and profound emotion. But one day, an incident—I would dare call it satanic—made me doubt whether it truly came forth miraculously. This is what happened. On Great Thursday, they gave me a book to take inside the Holy Aedicule. But somewhere between its pages there was a piece of wax,
and this aroused my curiosity. Why was that wax needed? I asked why it was there, and the man who gave me the book replied that the bishop needed it to light and then give the Fire to the people. I did not like the sound of this, and I began to think that perhaps something was being concealed. So I decided to do something to discover the truth. I asked permission to be absent from noon on Great Friday until noon on Great Saturday, using as an excuse that I had to guide some pilgrims of my own. After receiving permission,
I asked to be allowed to clean the upper part of the Holy Aedicule, even though this was not on the schedule. They readily agreed. So on the morning of Great Friday, while I was cleaning, I waited until no one was near, then set up a ladder and climbed into the interior of the dome, where I could hide and watch. I called someone and told him to take the ladder away so that it would not be in the way. I said that when I had finished cleaning above, I would call someone else to bring it back, or else I would jump down myself. And so it happened. I remained there, silent and trembling, until noon the next day, when I saw the Patriarch arrive with the entire procession for the Holy Fire. After our bishop entered the Holy Sepulchre and the Armenian bishop entered the antechamber, they closed the door.
From above, where I was hiding, I saw our bishop kneel and bow his head all the way down to the ground. He remained there praying for quite some time, until I saw successive gentle flashes, like lightning, appear over the Holy Sepulchre. Within a few seconds they became more intense and rose higher and higher, until they formed a blue flame that moved in waves. Then the vigil lamps and our bishop’s candle were kindled. Deeply moved, he rose and, after giving thanks with tears, gave the Holy Fire to the Armenian bishop and then to the people outside. Our bishop also gave it to the Copts through the opening on the left. The Armenian gave it to the Armenians through the opening on the right.
Through the main entrance—which they opened from outside, since it had been sealed according to custom—our bishop gave the Holy Fire to the Orthodox. “I,” Elder Mitrophanis continued, “kept watching the Holy Fire fill the Holy Aedicule and pour out from it. What I felt then cannot be described. My terror, guilt, and shame knew no bounds. How had I, wretched man that I am, dared to doubt such an unmistakable miracle? Even now I cannot explain it, my children. With the greatest caution, I climbed down from my hiding place and ran to my spiritual father. He was astounded, because he had never heard of anyone who had seen the Holy Fire yet doubted its miraculous appearance. He gave me a one-year canon, a rule of repentance
and the Lord also disciplined me as I deserved. I remained bedridden for a year, and no one could help me. Nothing was found to be wrong with me. In the end, the man who had given me the book with the wax in it to carry into the Holy Sepulchre explained that he had only been joking when he said the bishop needed it to light the Holy Fire and give it to the people. He had simply put the wax there as a makeshift bookmark, not to bring in the Holy Fire.” This is what Father Mitrophanis told us, beloved, and we pass it on to you. With evident love, he urged us not to doubt the Holy Fire. Many others who had been there on Great Saturday and had seen the Holy Fire also told us various things, and they all reached the same conclusion: that the Holy Fire
appears every Great Saturday at the Holy Sepulchre. The Orthodox bishop is inside, after first undergoing a bodily search by state police officers. An Armenian bishop is also present as a witness, so that no one could possibly attempt any deception before him. I want you to know that the Holy Fire is blue at first and does not burn. It pours out from the Holy Aedicule, and everyone sees it. All claim it as their own and cry out, “The Holy Fire is ours!” Yet it is given only to the Orthodox. We also learned from both Catholics and Orthodox that the Roman Catholics place sulfur on a tray and set it upon the Stone of Unction. They then ignite the sulfur
and a flame rises, from which they take their light. The Armenians and Copts are present in the Church of the Resurrection on Great Saturday and receive the Holy Fire through the Orthodox. We then venerated other holy places outside the Church of the Resurrection, places we had never even imagined existed. Beside the church, for example, stands the Russian Church of Saint Alexander. There one can see the ruins of the gateway in the city walls through which the Lord passed, carrying the Cross. It should be said that in the Lord’s time the city did not extend as far as it does today, and therefore Golgotha lay outside the walls. Before
the Russian church stands the Church of Abraham, adjoining the Church of the Resurrection. There is still an olive tree there to which the ram was tied—the ram the Lord gave Abraham to sacrifice in place of Isaac. A few yards farther on, inside the church, is the place where Abraham had prepared the altar of sacrifice. The church’s icons bear witness to the events of that time. Descending along a road, we come to the Holy Monastery of Saint Mary, the grandmother of the Most Holy Theotokos—that is, the mother of Saint Anna. This is the place where Saint Anna was born. How could we ever have imagined such a thing? In this monastery there is a unique icon of Saint Mary
which is renowned for many miracles. There is also a wonderworking icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. The nuns who live there moved us deeply by their faith. On the same road, only a few yards from the Monastery of Saint Mary, stands the Holy Monastery of Saint Euthymios the Great, that Father of our Church who lived in the desert of Judea. Indeed, the ruins of his holy monastery were discovered recently. Two or three minutes farther along the same road, we come to the Holy Monastery of Saint Spyridon. There is a fragment of the stone slab upon which our Lord stepped when He came to the Temple at twelve years of age, and the divine fragrance confirms its authenticity.
There are also relics of Saint Spyridon. On another road, along the Way of the Passion, we find a monastery dedicated to Saint Charalambos. There is a section of a wall against which our Lord leaned for support as He climbed toward Golgotha carrying the Cross. It was His final stop along the way. The fragrance pouring from it overwhelms us and brings the event vividly to mind. The sentence of condemnation issued by Pilate is also kept there, along with a relic of Saint Charalambos. Farther down the same road stands the house of the woman known as Saint Veronica, who came out with a cloth and wiped the Lord’s sweat-covered face. That place belongs to the Latins. We walk a few steps farther.
A hieromonk who was with us points out a place on the wall. It is utterly simple and unadorned: a solid stone in the wall, slightly indented in the shape of a large hand. Its rich fragrance revealed that a mystery lay hidden there as well. The hieromonk explained that the Lord had placed His hand there to support Himself and that it was at this very spot that Simon of Cyrene took up the Cross. Who could doubt this truth, my beloved? This place stands among Muslim shops, and thousands of people pass along this road every day. Who would dare apply fragrance there? Exposed to sun, wind, and rain, this stone itself bears witness.
Even the greatest unbeliever, I think, would be left with no room for doubt in this matter. A few yards farther down, on the left, is the Praetorium. The hieromonk who serves there leads us into an underground chamber, where we see a church and, opposite it, a labyrinthine space whose only sign of modern civilization is a single electric lamp giving light. “Here,” he explains, “were the prisons in which they held the Lord.” “O my God!” we exclaimed, and every thought within us was paralyzed, beloved. How terrible this is! And what are these holes in the stone? Why are they here? “They placed the Lord’s feet in them while He sat upon this stone,” the hieromonk replies.
Horror! My God, Your patient endurance alone reveals Your divinity. Once again, the fragrance immediately confirmed the truth of what we had been told. Beneath the Lord’s prison is the prison of Barabbas. This is also the place where the Apostles celebrated the first Divine Liturgy. There is an enormous baptismal font, as well as a small fragment of the column to which they tied the Lord. Behind the Praetorium stands a monastery containing the house of Simon the Pharisee, where Nicodemus spoke with the Lord concerning the Kingdom of Heaven. In its underground chamber, I want you to know, is the prison of the Apostle Peter, from which the angel delivered him, as we read in Acts. Continuing along the same road,
we come to the Pavement, where Pilate held the trial of Jesus and condemned Him. We also encounter the Pool of Bethesda, where the Lord healed the man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years; it still contains water. As happens in every place we visit, our nous, our spiritual intellect, takes flight, returns to that time, and beholds the events as they unfold. Nearby another surprise awaits us: the house of Saint Anna, where the Theotokos was born. It is an old and very damp underground chamber, with an ancient mosaic floor that has been left entirely uncared for; beneath it are catacombs of the first Christians together with their tombs.
Our nous traveled back to those years when the Most Holy Theotokos lived in this house as a three-year-old child. We beheld the life of that holy family, but above all we longed to possess the love that Saints Joachim and Anna had for the Lord.
What does it mean, my beloved, that they desired to offer Him such a grace-filled child—their one and only little angel, whose equal had never existed upon the earth! Nothing overshadowed their love for Him, and the Lord did not overlook their offering. We gave thanks to the Lady of the world, who counted us worthy to set foot upon the place where she was born, and to her holy parents. Not daring to ask for anything, we departed and, after walking a few yards, found ourselves outside the city walls. We descended an asphalt road, and within a few minutes stood before a monastery dedicated to Saint Stephen, the Protomartyr and Deacon. New emotions awaited us, for there was the place where they stoned him and
his tomb. We fervently asked him to grant us a little of his faith and freedom from resentment. How much we received, I do not know, my beloved. A few yards farther to the left, new wonder and new emotion awaited us: the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos at Gethsemane. We descended many steps from the road, entered a courtyard, and then passed into an underground cave-church with a broad staircase down the middle. On the right are the tombs of Saints Joachim and Anna, and on the left is the tomb of Saint Joseph the Betrothed. At the foot of the staircase, on the right, stands the Holy Aedicule, within which lies the empty tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos. At this point, I would like
to tell the whole world, including the Orthodox, that there are two empty tombs which move us, ought to move us, and must be carefully guarded: the tomb of our Lord Jesus Christ and the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Not one of the so-called founders of religions has an empty tomb—not one. All remain bound in their burial shrouds. Whether his name is Muhammad, Buddha, Zoroaster, a pope, Luther, or Russell, they all remain bound in their burial shrouds.
The tomb of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Orthodox Church, is empty, and the tomb of His Most Holy Mother is empty. These tombs could not hold the Author of life or the Mother of Life. And blessed are those who follow the Author of this life in the Orthodox Church and honor the Mother of Life. This is a pledge that your own tomb, too, will one day be left empty, because Christ will raise you from the dead. Let us never forget this. It is a pledge of the true faith: that there is one true faith, the faith that has the power to conquer death and rightly confesses the person of the Author of life.
The deep emotion continues. Once again, it is impossible to describe what one feels there. For a moment our thoughts are stilled, and words from the Paraklesis, the supplicatory canon, fill our nous: “O Gethsemane, receive and bury my body; and You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit.” We stoop to enter the Holy Aedicule, longing to say a few words to the Theotokos, the God-bearer; yet all we can do is weep silently, without knowing exactly why. We feel that we are in her embrace, and we grieve because we cannot take out our hearts and lay them upon her knees. At such moments, beloved, a person cannot ask for anything.
He forgets all his troubles and feels only his own weakness with overwhelming force. After a little while, we backed out, holding our breath as though turned to stone, and then climbed back up to the road. Before us stood a small pavilion. It marks the place where, during the burial procession of the Most Holy Theotokos, an impious man dared to push her all-pure body, intending to throw it to the ground as they carried it for burial. But an angel of the Lord cut off his hands. Opposite us rises a building set within a beautiful garden. This is the Garden of Gethsemane, the place where our Lord was betrayed. Shortly before Judas betrayed Him and He was arrested, He prayed there, while His disciples a little distance away could not withstand the temptation and fell asleep.
Within this building, I want you to know, is the very place where the Lord prayed and His sweat fell from His face like great drops of blood, as the Apostle and Evangelist Luke writes. Sadly, the Latins control it. Behind it, on the slope of the Mount of Olives mentioned in Holy Scripture, stands a most imposing Russian monastery dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. The compunctionate chanting of the nuns at Vespers makes us feel that we are in another world, a spiritual world. Opposite Gethsemane we see the Golden Gate, through which the Lord entered the Holy City at twelve years of age and went to the Temple of Solomon. Through it He passed again, seated upon a donkey’s colt, on Palm Sunday.
Through this gate Emperor Heraclius entered in the year 629 carrying the Precious Cross, which he raised upon Golgotha. The gate is now closed; it lies within the precincts of the Temple of Solomon. Everyone, even the Jews, believes that it will open at the Second Coming. Below, between the city walls and the Mount of Olives, lies the Valley of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. His tomb is there, together with the tomb of Absalom, son of David; the tomb of Zechariah, son of Barachiah; and, higher up, the tomb of Saint James and another tomb known as the Cave of the Virgins. This valley, my beloved, is also called the Valley of Cedars or the Valley of Weeping.
Let us pause here once again. By the grace and power of the Life-giving Tomb and dread Golgotha, we shall continue recounting these events in another talk—events that deeply move not only every visitor and pilgrim, but every listener as well.
These events have power in themselves, because they are bound to the Almighty. May the grace of Gethsemane and of the empty tomb of our Most Holy Theotokos also be with the whole world and with us—in our troubles, in the concerns of our families, and in the affairs of our Church. Yes, my dear ones, let us ask this from the depths of our hearts, with confidence.
The Queen of All will not abandon us—she who left Gethsemane and flew to be near Him, there to intercede for us always. Once again, may God be our helper.
