Summary

The lecture presents pilgrimage as a spiritual encounter with Christ’s earthly life, beginning not in Jerusalem but in Nazareth. At the Jordan River, Christ’s Baptism is interpreted as reversing humanity’s course from death toward the heavenly Jerusalem and Paradise. True pilgrimage requires more than seeing holy sites outwardly; believers must approach them with humility, inward purity, and a heart bearing Christ.

Thank you, Fathers, and beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.

I must confess from the outset that I do not feel at ease when I am called to speak at an event such as this, so closely connected with the Most Holy Sepulchre, with this Mother of Life, Holy Zion. Yet I could not do otherwise, because, as you know, there is a commandment of our Lord which says, “Give to him who asks you,” and another which says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” If I remember correctly, this is the third time.

You have given me this opportunity to speak about things that cannot truly be put into words. Only if a person succeeds in experiencing them inwardly, with the nous, can he approach them; he cannot simply express them in words. He must experience them personally and taste them for himself. And I thank God for events such as these, where His people labor to awaken this longing, so that others may desire to look deeply into what God has left to the faithful of this world. For my part, I humbly wish them many years and every success in this work. As you know from the programs and the invitations you received...

The title of this evening’s talk, which forms part of this beautiful event, is “In the Footsteps of Jesus.” It is a subject about which much could be said. I have attended other events of this kind, and I have also taken an active part in them. Everything revolves around Jerusalem, as around the sun; everything begins there and everything ends there. But allow me to express a slightly different thought on this point, which I intend to present to you this evening. If someone truly...

wishes to follow Jesus, I do not think he should begin in Jerusalem. He should begin somewhere else. Our Christ did not first walk in Jerusalem. It was in Jerusalem that He shed His blood.

There He set the final seal. In Jerusalem He brought His earthly course to its completion. He signed and sealed it with His blood on Golgotha. That is true, but He did not begin in Jerusalem. And a pilgrim—someone counted worthy for his feet to reach and tread upon that holy soil of Palestine, and for his eyes to behold things that angels themselves would have desired to see—must also bear in mind the other things that can and should be seen. He should begin not in Jerusalem, but in Nazareth.

Our Christ did not first walk upon the earth by Himself; His Mother carried Him. Our Christ walked upon the earth with the feet of His Mother. God’s meeting with humanity took place in Nazareth.

The step by which He descended—the one called the Theotokos—was there. There He set His foot, and from there His path appears and continues until it reaches its end, where the salvation of the human race is signed and sealed, solemnly and irrevocably, with His blood. It is true that pilgrims often miss this blessing. Almost every tour that arrives there passes through Nazareth—yes, passes through Nazareth—but the pilgrims do not live the moments of Nazareth. That is the point. There is so much for a person to see there, but the schedules do not allow it.

A person needs time to take it all in, and even then...

People do not understand what is there. They see it only outwardly, and for precisely that reason they gain little and do not experience the spiritual life present in every one of those places. Nazareth, then, is a city of Galilee. I could offer some details about the city and its history, but I must first say that its distinction lies in the fact that our Christ lived there. He spent His childhood there after returning from Egypt, where, as you know, He had fled from persecution. He remained there for many years—more than thirty—until He began His public ministry. You understand, then, what this city is. Our Christ spent only a year or two in Jerusalem; in Nazareth He lived for thirty years.

Blessed indeed is that place. There the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother, also lived. This is no ordinary, incidental city; it too is a great holy place. I would say that these are among the less often mentioned treasures of the Holy Land, which ought to enrich and complete a pilgrim’s whole experience. Therefore, if someone wishes to find the footsteps of Jesus, who came down to earth from heaven and emptied Himself in kenosis, he must go to Nazareth. There he must follow Him: follow Him as a child, follow Him in the synagogue, follow Him as He preaches, and follow Him there beside His father, working in obedience and submission. And there is also the history of the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother. So the footsteps begin there. I do not know whether you have ever considered the place of this city in this way.

I have lived there, and from what I have also read, it is a city about fourteen miles from Tiberias, six miles from Mount Tabor, and sixty-six miles—approximately one hundred and twenty kilometers—from Jerusalem. Let us dwell on one scene that we heard about last night. Last night we heard: “The chief commander of the angels was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos, ‘Rejoice.’” Where did he set foot? In Nazareth. And that entire exchange took place in Nazareth. There she said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Then, bearing within her womb not merely a man but God Himself, she hastened into the hill country.

She went to meet her kinswoman Elizabeth and to hear there, “Blessed is she who believed that the things spoken to her would be fulfilled.” A young maiden of about fourteen years set out from Nazareth in those days and walked approximately one hundred and forty to one hundred and forty-five kilometers, going toward Jerusalem and then onward into the hill country to meet Elizabeth. Think of walking one hundred and forty-five kilometers with the primitive means available then—which surely meant relying on one’s own feet. How many days did this young maiden travel? Where did she stay at night? Who guided her? How did she know where to go? And yet she went, bearing God Himself within her womb. So it is with us: when our heart bears God within it...

everything is taken care of, everything becomes easier, everything is made smooth—even the most difficult things. Nazareth, as I tell you, is situated within reach of all these places. It is a city from which you have the opportunity to see Mount Hermon, which you have heard mentioned in various accounts; to see Carmel, Gilead, and Tabor. It is a city that offers much, if a person is willing and knows how to make use of the opportunity. I would also like you to know that Nazareth is a city not mentioned in the Old Testament. If you read carefully, you may already have noticed this and will understand my point. Nazareth appears in the New Testament, particularly when Nathanael responds to Philip: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” That is where Nazareth first appears.

Then, when our Christ returns there, we hear that “He shall be called a Nazarene.” Nazareth is mentioned twenty-nine times in the New Testament. Nearby there is also a precipice. In their malice, the Jews once tried to throw our Jesus over it, but He escaped from them. His human nature and His divine nature were manifested, and He passed through their midst. Clearly, the time had not yet come for Him to surrender Himself. Luke has preserved this for us in the fourth chapter of his Gospel, verse 29. This is why I say that Nazareth is the city where God’s meeting with humanity was divinely accomplished, as I shall show you more fully as we continue.

Consider the events that took place there. You will see the place where the Most Holy Theotokos went to draw water and where the Annunciation occurred. Would you like to see the steps she descended to fetch the water? Would you like to see her church and the place where the Annunciation took place, where what God had declared in Eden was fulfilled: “I will put enmity between you and between her seed”?

Thank you. “He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” This was fulfilled there, in Nazareth. As you know, the child Jesus remained there after His return. As I said earlier, He stayed there until the time when He began His public ministry. In the days of Constantine the Great, the place suffered at the hands of the Samaritans.

Our records tell us that in the sixth century pilgrims began to come and venerate these Holy Places, because it was there that God first set foot in order to meet the one who was lost, the one who had fallen away. In 1109 Nazareth became the seat of a Christian bishopric. From Nazareth comes “Nazarene”; “Nazirite” is one thing and “Nazarene” another. The Nazarene is the one from Nazareth. The prophecy says, “that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled: He shall be called a Nazarene.” These exact words are not found in any single prophet, but it seems that all the prophets together, in their general vision and by the Spirit, foresaw beforehand the name “Nazarene.”

This is also why Christians themselves were derisively called Nazarenes. Thank you. You should understand that our Christ was not called a Nazarene as a term of praise or admiration, but mockingly and contemptuously. Since Nazareth was thought to have produced nothing good, it followed, in their contemptuous judgment, that neither the Nazarenes nor those who believed in the Nazarene were worth anything. Yet the truth was entirely different. There God was pleased to fulfill what I mentioned earlier: “The chief commander of the angels”—not a rebel against God, but the foremost angel, the Archangel Gabriel—brought the message to the Most Holy Theotokos and, through her, to us. If God counts us worthy, in a few days we shall celebrate this Ascension once again. Therefore, if a person succeeds in contemplating inwardly, with the nous, what took place there, I believe a desire will be born within him for God to count him worthy...

to go there as soon as possible and experience these things firsthand. Another city, another station where one can now encounter the footsteps of Jesus walking on His own, is Bethlehem. Before that, He walked with His Mother’s feet; in Bethlehem, He began to walk with His own. Bethlehem is another station. The name Bethlehem means “house of bread”; Ephrathah also means “house of bread.” And truly Bethlehem brought forth the Bread: it brought forth the heavenly manna, the Bread of Life, and gave Him to humanity. In the fifth chapter of his prophecy, Micah wrote about Bethlehem, and through those words the Lord guided the Magi, those wise men who came from the East.

“Bethlehem, land of Judah, you are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.” Elsewhere it says that a ruler will come forth who will shepherd “with a rod of iron.” And indeed, it was from there that our Christ came forth. Over this Bethlehem stood the star that guided those men, the learned men from the East known as the Magi, and they were counted worthy to worship our Christ after the shepherds had worshiped Him. For the worship of the shepherds came first, and afterward came the worship of the Magi. Bethlehem thus embraces these two groups: the shepherds who worshiped Him, and the Magi, who came from another religion and from unbelief. For many people try...

to grasp the mystery of Christ only with the nous—the spiritual intellect: the new mystery of God, the mystery of the Incarnation, of His death, burial, and Resurrection. This is a mistake. God is not discovered; He reveals Himself. If we have not yet received this inner assurance, if we do not feel that we bear Christ within us—like a pregnant woman who knows that she carries the fruit of her womb—it is because we stumble at this very point. People try to know Christ through knowledge and education. But Christ reveals Himself in the human heart, whether a person is an intellectual or a simple, uneducated person, provided that the heart is pure. The brain can be bought by the heart.

If the heart is not pure, the nous cannot understand any of these things. Distinguished, educated, intellectual people—both in the Church, we might say, and in the state—remained strangers to this great miracle, to God’s visitation of the world. Yet simple people learned of it: simple shepherds keeping watch over their flocks in the fields. They had the courage to leave them in the middle of the night, despite the many dangers from thieves and wild beasts, and go down to see what the angel had told them, as the Lord overshadowed them. And how did they know that this was from the Lord and not from the evil one? The human heart always receives an inner assurance, and God knows how to speak to the human heart. This is an answer to the many who ask, “But how am I to understand these things?” If your heart is pure, surely God has the power to illumine you and show you what is good and what is evil.

And then there were the others: distinguished, educated, intellectual men who had journeyed for so long to come and find Christ. You saw how they worshiped Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh: gold for a King, incense for God, and myrrh for the Victim offered in sacrifice. Do you understand what happened? Did they outwardly see His divinity, His lordship, or His kingdom? Were these realities visibly manifest in the gifts they offered? No. They saw only a tiny, tender little Child. Yet when God helps people, they see in a different way. But humility must be present. When humility is lacking, grace is hindered.

There in Bethlehem, 1,070 years before Christ, the eighth child of Jesse was chosen—the son whom Jesse had considered fit only to remain behind at home. When Samuel was sent to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse the Bethlehemite, he asked, “Where are your sons?” Jesse brought them all before him, but the Holy Spirit gave no command that any of them should become king. “Do you have another?” Samuel asked. Jesse replied, “There is one more.” Could that one possibly become king? The older and more impressive sons were already there; Jesse had not even called the youngest in for the meal. Then the little one came inside, his chest darkened by the sun and marked with scratches from tending the flocks.

His eyes and his whole countenance shone, and the Holy Spirit indicated that this was the one who should be king. Samuel anointed him before the others, while they stood there astonished. And more than a thousand years later, through the Most Holy Theotokos, the royal maiden, David gave flesh to Christ. For she was of royal lineage, and through her he gave flesh to the King of Heaven. Thus everything comes full circle. In Bethlehem, the events themselves proclaim across a thousand years that God’s purpose was fulfilled: the One for whose sake David had been chosen, so that his lineage might provide the flesh, had now been born. Strange and wonderful things! If someone goes there, he will see many things.

But he must know how to look upon them closely, understand them, and take them seriously. Today there are many Arab Christians there, but there is not enough personnel, just as none of our holy shrines has enough personnel. This presents us with a great opportunity—a very great opportunity. There one enters the basilica built by Saint Helen. And when a person goes inside, he understands that he has entered another realm. First of all, there is a low doorway. An entire great basilica has a low doorway. This is the first message: you must make yourself small. You must lay aside the proud stature of your ego, humble yourself, and bow down to enter, because here Heaven bowed down.

Heaven emptied itself in kenosis, and you cannot enter standing proudly upright. This is another lesson. When a person enters and begins to descend beneath the sanctuary into the cave—reached by two stairways—to encounter the place where Christ was born, then, if he understands where he is going, others must almost carry him, for he can scarcely walk. Unfortunately, a third entrance has now been opened by the Catholics, who arrived later, about a hundred years ago. As we descend on the right, just before coming out again, on our left is the place where our Christ was wrapped in swaddling clothes. The Catholics constructed that site.

They have also made another place there, claiming that it was where the Magi opened the gifts they had brought to our Christ. Yet the Evangelist says plainly that He was found in a house, after He had left the cave, and that the gifts were presented there. But they are always introducing innovations, so it was natural for them to innovate at this point as well. The cave, according to the dimensions they record, is roughly forty feet by twelve, and about ten feet high. As I told you, when the Latins arrived there in 1847, they stole the star that had marked the place and later installed a star of their own. On it they wrote the following words in Latin:

“Here Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary,” together with the Catholic emblem that can still be seen there today.

I did not know of these things until I found them recorded. They also have the altar I mentioned, where they claim that the gifts were presented. But the Evangelist tells us that the gifts were presented in the house. At that time they found our Christ with His Mother, while Joseph was absent. There is also a shrine called the Chapel of the Innocents. If one descends there, one finds relics which, according to the tradition handed down to us, belong to the fourteen thousand infants slaughtered through Herod’s wickedness, because he wanted the child Jesus to be killed among them.

There are skulls belonging to older children as well as infants, evidently because some of these children were old enough for their parents to take them in their arms and flee, yet they too were slaughtered. This is something concrete, something that gives tangible evidence.

This is also recorded in our Holy Tradition, for the Church—though you may not know it—commemorates on the twenty-ninth of December, immediately after the Nativity of Christ and the feast of the Protomartyr Stephen, the fourteen thousand infants slaughtered by Herod. Nearby, above it, is another cave called the Milk Grotto, which is under Catholic care. As I mentioned, its soil, stones, and rocks are white. Tradition says that the Most Holy Theotokos stopped there to care for our Christ and nursed Him. A drop of her milk fell to the ground, and the cave immediately became white. Even today, women who have given birth but have no milk go there and take a little of the earth.

They make a small pellet from it with a little water, swallow it, and their milk comes in. So this too is a place through which anyone wishing to follow our Christ should pass. I am speaking only briefly, saying just a few words about each place, to awaken your desire, as it were, that God may count us worthy to go there and see these things for ourselves. Then, if one wishes to follow our Christ through the events commemorated by the Church, one must go to the Jordan. Our Christ appears there after His circumcision and the other events. I am not following strict chronological order; the Meeting of the Lord also comes before this. He goes to the Jordan, a great barrier into which many streams flow. Yet it was the Jordan that was chosen. If someone wished to examine the Jordan itself, he would encounter many moving things. First, I want to describe the river to you.

The Jordan is about forty kilometers from Jerusalem. Jericho is thirty-three kilometers away, and the Jordan lies another six or seven kilometers beyond Jericho. Other rivers and streams flow in that region, such as the Kedron and several others, but the Jordan is the greatest. It is said to be about one hundred kilometers long. From its source it flows into the Sea of Tiberias and then emerges again. They say it is about one hundred kilometers long, thirty to fifty feet wide, and three to nine or ten feet deep. It is a swift and forceful river—make no mistake about that. You may ask why I am telling you this. It is because unbelievers claim that when Joshua crossed it, the river was not truly in flood.

Yet when the waters are swollen, neither a person nor even a beast can cross. Holy Scripture describes beautifully—though I do not know whether you have read it—what happened when the rulers of the Amorites heard of Israel’s crossing of the Jordan: “Their hearts melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them.”

They feared the children of Israel when they heard that the river had opened for them to cross. “Who are these people?” they wondered. Even the Hebrew name Yarden is said to mean “rushing” or “flowing forcefully.” In any case, the Jordan is a type of humanity. Humanity comes forth from Adam and Eve—and where does it go? It rushes toward Hell. What does the Jordan do? It comes from two sources, Jor and Dan, and rushes toward the Dead Sea. But what happens now? The One of whom we spoke earlier comes. He enters the Jordan. And what happens? “The Jordan was driven back.”

He who has two natures, God and man, enters the river, and everything changes. Now we are going toward the Jerusalem above; we are not going toward the Dead Sea or toward Hell, but toward Paradise, because Christ came and changed the course of humanity, just as He changed the course of the Jordan. And if you want to consider something important that must not pass unnoticed tonight—especially on the eve of the Sunday of Orthodoxy, since this association has chosen to unite its events with the celebration of Orthodoxy—you should read carefully the account of Naaman the Syrian, a leprous commander, and his journey to the banks of the Jordan. This valiant commander, afflicted with leprosy, came to the Prophet Elisha. Without even coming out to see him, Elisha told him:

to go down to the river and immerse himself seven times. When Naaman heard this, he had expected the man of God to come out, raise his hands, and pray over him. He could not understand such a command. His pride was wounded, and he also took it as an insult to his nation. As you will remember if you have read the account, he said, “In my homeland we have rivers—the Abana and the Pharpar, and other rivers. Could I not bathe in them and be healed? Must I go into this little river, this ditch, for my leprosy to disappear?” At last, a sensible servant intervened and said, “My father, we have come from the ends of the earth. What did he ask of you? Did he ask for gold? What did he ask except that you go and immerse yourself so that you may be healed? Go down and obey his word, so that you may be freed from your leprosy.”

He would rather remain upon his chariot with his leprosy than climb down and leave his leprosy behind. Such is human pride! But his servant spoke earnestly to him, and Naaman was moved. He went down, Holy Scripture tells us, and immersed himself once, twice, three times, four times, five times, and six times. The seventh time, as the man of God had commanded, he came up and all his leprosy remained behind in the water, while his skin became like that of a little child. Someone may ask, “What do these things have to do with us?” They have everything to do with us. The Jordan is not some great river called Protestantism or Papism. What did Naaman need? The Jordan is the little stream of Orthodoxy, with its seven Mysteries, figured by the seven immersions, which washes a person and casts off his leprosy—whether we wish to understand it or not. Everything is written there; everything is revealed there.

No river can cleanse a person of leprosy, and no religion can do so—only Orthodoxy, only Orthodoxy. This is not merely something helpful; it is a reality. If you wish, seek out the founders of the religions. Whom do you want? Muhammad? Buddha? Zoroaster? Confucius? What do you want—Papism? Protestantism? Calvin or Luther? Go and look for them. You will find them all bound in their burial shrouds—bound in their burial shrouds. Only Jesus Christ, the Son of Mary, the Nazarene, the Crucified One—He alone has an empty tomb, together with the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother. All the others remain below.

Here in Athens, at the Pnyx, as we read in the seventeenth chapter of Acts, when they heard Paul speaking about the Resurrection, they found it so absurd that they said, “We will hear you again about this another time.” The very idea of the Resurrection seemed ridiculous to them. But for us it is our assurance. The empty tombs in Jerusalem—the tomb of Christ and the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Author of Life and the Mother of our Life—are our assurance. And as they rose, so they will raise us also. This is where we stand, and I remind everyone of it. So this little river, the Jordan, is not insignificant. It represents Orthodoxy with her seven Mysteries, which washes away the leprosy of every proud person, provided that he humbles himself and comes down from his chariot.

Unfortunately, our pride does not allow us—or perhaps, to put it more gently, it is our ignorance. What else shall I speak to you about? Shall I speak about Cana? Christ passed through there as well. Has anyone gone to Cana and seen that the jars are still there—the jars in which Christ changed the water into wine, performing His first miracle and showing how greatly He honors the Most Holy Theotokos? There He revealed the power of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Protestants tell us, “Pay no attention to her. Go directly to Christ; leave her aside.” Have you not seen or heard what He said at Cana? “Woman, what have I to do with you?” What concern is this of ours? They take that very seriously—and there they stop. Yet that is precisely where the matter begins.

It begins with the fact that the Most Holy Theotokos knew Christ could work miracles, and she appealed to Him, saying, “They have no wine,” so that He might deliver those people from their difficult situation. That is where it begins. Christ answers her, “Woman, what have I to do with you?” They are delighted to focus on those words. But why, you crafty fellow, do you not also quote what the Most Holy Theotokos said immediately afterward? “Whatever He tells you, do it.”

“Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” It is as though she says, “I will present your need to Him; I will speak to Him; I will shelter you. But you must do whatever He tells you.” By extension, this is also a lesson for our own days. Once again she sheltered our Greece, and we were not destroyed during these days. She gave us the opportunity to obey the words, “Whatever He tells you, do it”: to come to metanoia, to change our way of life, and to go to Holy Confession so that we may be saved. This is what happened there at Cana. What can I say? Where can I stop, and what can I present to you? I do not wish to take advantage of your time and forbearance. I wish to say only one thing: we have received great mercy. It is no accident that we were born Orthodox. We have a duty to treasure this, and at the same time we have a responsibility.

We have a responsibility toward all those serving on the front line down there—a hundred people holding that entire world together. The forces of the Arab world and of Judaism are formidable adversaries. Yet it appears that the Holy God and Christ have once again shown us mercy and continue to show us mercy, through the election of the new Patriarch and the appointment of the other new leaders there, the bishops. It appears that He will keep this position unshaken. But will we make good use of God’s kindness and longsuffering? That is the question. It is not enough simply to belong to an association. Nor is it enough to offer five drachmas out of our surplus. This cause needs blood, because blood is being shed, and blood is required. There are only a few. As many of us as are able should go and support those sacred places.

In doing so, we bestow a great benefit first upon ourselves, and then upon the Orthodox cause and Orthodox Christianity. If we can encourage others—our children and others—to serve in the Church and eventually go there, we shall receive a great mission and great grace. In any event, I pray that the Holy God, through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother, and through the prayers of the Holy Fathers here in the Orthodox Church of Christ, may shelter us as individuals, as families, as a nation, and as the Church. May He bless us, together with all those heroes who have labored in this cause for so many years, and count us worthy to celebrate occasions such as this again. Amen.
