Summary

The Nativity reveals the supreme event of history: God became man so that humanity might become divine by grace. Christ’s birth from the Virgin by the Holy Spirit uniquely fulfills the prophetic expectation of the Messiah and transcends the ordinary order of nature. Prophets, Greek philosophers, and ancient oracles are presented as witnesses who anticipated the Incarnation, voluntary Passion, and saving work of Christ.

We stand before this great feast of Christendom: the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Allow me, then, to take as my subject this evening, in connection with what was said this morning, the meaning of this great event about which you have been hearing. Thank you.

We must understand that this is the greatest event of all. Nothing in the world is more momentous than the fact that God became man. Why? So that man might once again become god by grace. It is flattering that God should become man—forgive me, I meant the opposite. It is an exalted thing for man to become god by grace. It ought to fill him with wonder. Indeed, it is what man desires and pursues in countless ways in this world: to rise, to be seen, to live, and to prevail.

And yet, although this is so momentous and so good for man, he takes almost no interest in it. He does not even know that he is destined to become god by grace. “I, a god?” Yes. “You are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.” If you are not to become god by grace, then what do you receive in Holy Communion? You receive God. What do you imagine you are receiving when you commune? Do you not receive God? Do you not receive Him—God who became man? Why, then, do you receive Him? Why do you enter into communion with Him? What is the purpose, if we are not to become gods by grace? Are we to become gods by nature?

By grace. Christ alone is the Son of God by nature. We are children of God by grace. Christ has the Father as His Father by nature. We have the Father as our Father by grace, through Jesus. We too call the Father our Father: “Our Father, who art in heaven.” What do we become with Christ? One. We become one with Him by grace when we enter into communion with Him, when we receive Him in Holy Communion, when He transfuses His own blood into us. This is a great thing for man, and yet man either knows nothing at all about it or knows only a few things, and even those incorrectly. It is time for man to understand it. And what must he understand?

God became man, and the answer as to why is this: so that man might become god by grace. Why did God come down? So that man might ascend. That is the reason. Through whom did Christ descend into the world? Through the Theotokos. And through whom do we ascend to God? Through Christ. These form one mystery: the Theotokos brought Christ down to us, and Christ raises man up and makes him god by grace. Where is Christ today? At the right hand of the Father. And why has He gone there? As a forerunner on our behalf. In other words, He is waiting for us. He took His risen body there, and there He awaits us.

That is man’s destiny. Great is man’s calling, great is his destiny—ineffable and beyond comprehension, as our Church says. And yet man refuses to look deeply into it. He has never asked God: “Why, my God, did You become man? Why did You suffer? Why were You crucified? Why were You buried? Why did You rise? Why?” He concerns himself with things that are temporary, earthly, and largely useless. He is not concerned with the things that endure, the things that will give true worth to the purpose for which he came into this world. The greatest event in the world, then, is that God became man; and Christ is the one unique person at the heart of it.

He must be made known throughout the world. As I told you this morning when I spoke from the pulpit, a great preparation took place, and everyone spoke about this person. The history of every human being, great or small—whether insignificant people like us or those whom men have called great—is written from the day of birth until the day of death. But this is not so with Christ. Christ’s history reaches back to the creation of the world, to the time when there were two human beings in Paradise, and the devil and God were already at work. From that time onward, there was already testimony concerning our Lord Jesus Christ and His coming into this world.

He is the person about whom the prophets wrote, the person whose coming the oracles foretold. Even Satan’s spirits spoke about Christ; they too were enlisted to testify concerning Him. He is the person about whom the philosophers spoke. The whole world, both evil and good—those who believed in the one God and those who believed in a thousand gods—spoke about this person, some saying a little and others much. The texts that speak of the history preceding the coming of our Christ are truly moving. Of what other man do we know beforehand when and where he will be born? Of no one. Did we know where we ourselves would be born? Did we know that we would be born Greek Orthodox? Did we know who our father and mother would be? Did we know any of this? But with Christ, we do know. Before He came into the world, the prophets wrote these things for us.

They foretold how He would be born and where He would be born: He would be born of a Virgin. He would not be born of a mother who had relations with a man. Our Christ had a wondrous birth because He had a wondrous conception. All of us are children of human parents. I am the son of Athanasios and Asimo.

You read Holy Scripture. You must have come across the seventh chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews, where Paul strives to convince his countrymen that the Messiah has come. There he presents our Christ as fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy, and he points to such a person in the Old Testament, whose name was Melchizedek. In the fourteenth chapter of Genesis, a person suddenly appears and plays a part in the narrative, yet nothing is said of his father, his mother, his ancestry, his homeland, the time in which he lived, or even his death. This is Melchizedek. The name Melchizedek is a compound name: king of peace.

He prefigured Christ; he was a type of Christ, and he was greater than Abraham, who was regarded as a great man. We are told that when Abraham returned victorious from fighting the enemies of his nephew Lot, bringing back much spoil, he offered a tenth to Melchizedek. Melchizedek was the greater, and he also offered Abraham bread and wine. Abraham acknowledged him as a type of the great High Priest, just as Christ later left us His Body and Blood under the forms of bread and wine. Thus Abraham made his offering to Melchizedek. The cave of Melchizedek still exists on Mount Tabor. Those of you who have been counted worthy to go there will know it: it is directly behind the church of the Transfiguration, behind the place where Christ was transfigured.

There is the cave of Melchizedek. Our Christ is fatherless according to His humanity, for no human father begot Him; and He is motherless according to His divinity, for as God He has no mother. He has God as Father and a human being as His mother. This is why He too is called fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. These are wondrous things. They happened for the first time in history and will never happen again. “There is nothing new under the sun,” said Solomon. But this alone was new: that a Virgin gives birth. This is the great wonder. Paul teaches and proclaims this beautifully, and our Church includes the passage in the epistle reading on the night of the Nativity. In Galatians 4:4, he says that the fullness of time had come: “God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law.”

Why did he say, “born of a woman”? From whom else could He have come? I do not know. Ask Abraham and let him answer you; ask Jacob; ask Isaac. It says, “Abraham begot Isaac.” How, then, would this One be born of a woman? “Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah.” What does it say there? Men beget, while a woman gives birth. But here, concerning the conception and birth of Christ, it says that He would be born “of a woman.” This, then, is something extraordinary. People know that it is not the woman who begets; the woman gives birth. She is like the flowerpot, while the man sows the seed. Women know this, do they not? Men certainly know it, since they ask for a particular kind of child.

“Did she give him a boy, or did she not give him a girl?” But you are the one who sows the seed, sir. I am the flowerpot; I am the soil; I am the field. I receive whatever seed you sow, and that is what I bring forth. You sowed wheat, and I gave you wheat. You sowed corn, and I gave you corn. You sent me barley, and I gave you barley. Whatever you sent me, that is what I gave you. The man begets. Life is in the man’s seed, not in the woman’s ovum. The woman is like a flowerpot that receives the seed, gathers it, preserves it, nourishes it, and brings it forth, just as the earth does. You give the earth a lifeless thing called a seed, and it brings it to life, producing a shoot with a hundred seeds. This is God’s work. Since this was the ordinary manner of begetting, Scripture says, “Abraham begot Isaac,” and then speaks of Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Rachel, and so forth. But when it comes to the conception and birth of Jesus, it says...

Christ was born. Christ, it says, was born of the woman, not of a man. It then explains, as we heard this morning: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows.” How did the birth of Christ take place, O Evangelist? “She was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” And later, when the angel appeared to Joseph to convince and reassure him that the pregnancy of the Most Holy Theotokos was not the result of adultery, what did the angel say? “That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” That which was conceived in her—that which came into being within her—was not begotten by Abraham, nor by Joseph, nor by any other man. It was begotten by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit created life within the Theotokos. This is why the matter is so extraordinary—the strangest and most difficult thing one could speak of, if one has no faith.

Faith is needed to follow this whole mystery: its preparation, its fulfillment, and everything that followed. Even today, faith is needed. But man, as you know, has taken first place away from his ears, as I was saying this morning, and given it to his eyes, to his reasoning, and to his own knowledge. Man does not want to believe. He wants to see, to investigate, and to understand everything for himself. But can you understand the divine uncreated energies of the Holy Spirit? What have you understood, O man, of all that surrounds you? Which of the mysteries around you have you solved? How am I speaking at this moment, and how are you hearing me? What ear, nose, and throat specialist can fully explain to us how a human being hears?

How does it happen? It is not enough to say, “There are vibrations and various other things.” You did not make those things. Someone else made them and established the law by which they operate, so that you can hear. But how does it happen? When our Most Holy Theotokos heard this extraordinary message from the angel—as you remember from the account of the Annunciation—what did she say? “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” We too expect a man and a woman before we will accept that a child has been brought into existence. People do not want such extraordinary things. They want everything to pass through the judgment of their own reason. But what does your reason actually tell you? How do you see, O man? “I see with my eyes.” Really? Has no one ever passed directly in front of you without your seeing him?

Has someone never greeted you, only for you not to answer, so that he took offense? Then, not wanting to upset him, you later explained, “I did not notice you.” How did you fail to notice him, poor man? Where were you looking? “Well, my nous was not focused there.” Ah, so you see with the nous? Then what is it that sees? The nous sees, and the nous hears. Let me say it again clearly. The eye is an instrument used by the nous—the spiritual intellect—by the human soul. The eye itself does not see; it only looks. Someone may pass in front of you while you stare blankly, because your nous is elsewhere: you are troubled, absorbed in your sufferings and your problems, and you notice nothing before you. These are mysterious things, and yet people want to solve the supernatural miracle that exists in the world: the Incarnation of God, how God became man. John Chrysostom gives a beautiful answer.

Where God is at work, there is no place for the question “How?” When you see that God is involved, do not interfere and ask how He did it. This is why the angel did not answer our Most Holy Theotokos by explaining how it would happen, since she had no husband. He told her only what would happen: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you.” How He will accomplish it, I do not know. So here as well, let us not pridefully intrude and try to unravel things that are beyond nature. Do not look for the order of nature where what is taking place is supernatural. For “where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” For us, one and one make two; for Christ, one and one make a thousand.

Are we to limit the power and perfect wisdom of God, and then make our faith depend on those limits? As I was saying earlier in Trikala, we believe everything else with astonishing simplicity. There is only one thing we refuse to believe, because the devil will not let people believe it: what Scripture says and what God has done. A person has faith whenever he eats. If he waits to send his food to the state laboratory to find out whether his wife has poisoned him, he will go hungry and die before the answer comes. If he waits to send the water to the state laboratory to find out whether it is poisoned, he will die of thirst before the answer arrives. He believes and drinks; he believes and eats; he believes and travels; he believes and takes his medicine.

He trusts the doctor, lies down before him, and lets him cut him open and take him apart. He trusts the airplane and boards it. He trusts the car and travels in it. He trusts and buys his bread. He believes everything. He believes the teacher who tells him, “Two and two make four.” Why do they make four? He believes all these things, and that is how he goes forward in life. But when the matter of Christ arises, then he says, “Here I do not believe. These are fairy tales told by people who have the devout sitting before them. I have knowledge.” Really? What knowledge do you have? What subject do you truly understand? Can you tell me where your fingernail grows from, and why the flesh behind it bleeds while the nail itself does not? Solve that problem for me. How does it happen? How is one part dead, so that you can cut it, while the other is not? What mystery have you solved? Can you tell me who hollows out each of your hairs so that it is like a tube of macaroni? Irrational nature?

Has man solved even one mystery? Has he solved any of the mysteries surrounding him? Everything is a mystery. How does your mother drink dark wine and produce white milk for you? How does she eat cauliflower and cabbage and make milk for you? How does this happen? How is it that, as soon as a woman conceives, her breasts begin producing milk suited to the stomach of the child who will be born?

God formed the bones within the human being, as Solomon says so beautifully in the Wisdom of Solomon. Have you ever heard a workshop operating inside you? Has a mother ever heard a workshop inside her child, making teeth, covering them with enamel, shaping them for grinding, and forming the canine teeth as well? Has she ever heard any of this happening within her? What mystery have you solved, O man? Are you not ashamed to say such things?

It is the devil who stands in the midst of all this. You listen to him, believe in your own pride, and he tells you all these fairy tales—that such things are impossible. Do you imagine that you too were conceived through a lily? Or that the Most Holy Theotokos was, as we mockingly claim? Tomorrow Christ will place us in the dock and judge us by our own words. Why do you believe in everything else? Would we be sitting here now if we did not believe that the roof above us had been properly built? Would anyone have entered this place? We came in here by faith. Faith is present in everything. In faith you cast your seed and your sweat into the earth, believing that rain will come, that favorable weather will follow, and that you will reap something. In faith you rise and open your business. In faith you invest your money. Everything is done in faith.

Only when it comes to Christ, only when it comes to the faith, is there no faith.

Thank you. What does man really know? What does he know of the things surrounding him? He has made a few discoveries, and now he has cast God aside. Instead, he ought to be ashamed and say, “My friend, were such things here all along? Where was I all these years? Was I such a fool that I could not see them?” For man has created nothing; he has merely discovered what was already there. Fine! A wardrobe falls over, and behind it you find thirty gold coins hidden away. What an achievement! Where did you find the coins? What of the person who placed them there? You did not say, “Glory to God for my dear grandfather who put them there,” or, “Glory to God for my father.” No, you call it your own achievement: “I found them.” What did you find? The fruit of someone else’s labor. Did you create anything? These things already existed, and they still exist. And how much more unknown reality surrounds man—reality that ought to make him smaller and humbler! Yet man has made himself so great that he has—

—removed God from the midst of everything and now believes only in himself. Alas! It would have been better if the person who thinks this way had never been born—the person who erases the One who is the cause of all things, who holds all things together and preserves them. All these discoveries, and all the mysteries surrounding us, ought to make us still more humble, so that we may say with David: “Great are You, O Lord, and wondrous are Your works, and no word is sufficient to hymn Your wonders.”

How wondrous! But pride, I repeat, will not allow us to accept this. Therefore, do not ask how. Do not ask how when God places His hand in the midst of something. And let us not presume to be greater than the Most Holy Theotokos, who was given this part to fulfill. She lived through these things and faced them herself; and in the end she raised her most holy hands and said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” and she surrendered herself. For from the moment a person surrenders to God, everything changes. From the moment he surrenders. If a person does not surrender, if he does not lay down his ego, he can do nothing. Nevertheless, God spoke to us beforehand so that, when these things were fulfilled, we might believe. “These things were written,” He says, “so that you may believe.” They were not written down carelessly or by chance. We are not living before Christ, called to believe in events that have yet to happen. We are called to believe in events that have already taken place. Here we have a well-trodden path; we have historical realities. Gentlemen, did Plato exist? Of course he did. Did you live in his time and see him?

“I believe he existed because the historians say so.” How long ago did Plato live? Three thousand years ago. How do you believe in someone from three thousand years ago, yet refuse to believe in Christ, who came two thousand years ago and is closer to us? Socrates existed; Aristotle existed; Thermopylae exists; Europe exists; five continents exist. Have you gone personally and examined them all? No. You believe the testimony of others.

Others wrote about those things. Others did. Yes—and here too, others wrote what they witnessed. They were there. If I tell my son, “This happened in 1940; I went to Albania and suffered these things,” what will my son say to me? “You are lying”? When my father tells me, “I went to Eskişehir; I went to Asia Minor; I suffered this; hands were cut off; in Smyrna I endured the ordeal of the ship,” and so forth, should I tell him, “You are lying, because I was not there to believe it”? Is that reasonable?

No. We believe everything; we swallow everything whole. Yet we reject anything connected with Christ. Man is profoundly foolish. Man has landed on the moon, but he has not yet come down to earth concerning the matters to which he ought to pay attention. My beloved, Christ has left us without excuse. I repeat: do not demand merely natural explanations when, from the foundation of the world, all the prophets and all spiritual men have written about Him. And it was not only the Jews, but also the pagan Greeks, the peoples of the East, and the Persians. Wherever people and civilization existed, they wrote about the expected Messiah, on the basis of the promise God had given in Eden.

I told you earlier that the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent. That is the heart of the matter, and everything begins there. For those who have not studied these things, let me offer several statements—not from the prophets, who smell of incense and therefore frighten them, but from men of philosophy. They sound like passages from the Gospels! See what they say about this Christ, from whom we receive everything that flows, even while we reject Him and refuse to hear of Him. As I told you this morning, we accept the holidays, the thirteenth month’s salary, the festive meals—we accept everything, His sunshine and all His blessings—but we do not want to hear about Him. Let us see, then, what was written and said by men who had no connection with Christ, and whose testimony leaves us without excuse.

Plato, our own Greek philosopher, writes the following in his book Laws and Epinomis: “The righteous man, though he has committed no wrong, will be scourged, beaten, and finally crucified.” This was written three thousand years before Christ by one of our own philosophers.

Listen to all of it! He says: “When the bodiless divinity takes flesh among divided humanity, God becomes man, and the Son of God becomes the Son of a Virgin. He will take flesh, and this divinity will bring freedom from the passions.”

“This bodiless God will be hanged by an ungrateful people”—he speaks like an Evangelist—“and He will undergo all His sufferings voluntarily.” During Holy Week, our holy Church says, “The Lord comes to His voluntary Passion.” It was voluntary. He came willingly; He desired it. “Behold, I have come to do Your will. I will go. You were not pleased with sacrifices of bulls and calves. I will prepare a body and come to be sacrificed, to set matters right before You and to please You.” And there is something—I do not know whether any of you have ever traveled toward Monemvasia.

In Monemvasia, as I recall, there is a church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos called Chrysafitissa. At the Holy Doors there is an image of Christ wearing the crown of thorns, being drawn forward—being pulled, as it were, and hastening to sacrifice Himself for man. That is why the icon is called Christ the One Who Is Drawn. His love draws Him to sacrifice Himself for man’s sake. And here this pagan philosopher, who believed not merely in twelve gods but in a hundred and fifty, writes: “This bodiless divinity will be hanged by an ungrateful people and will undergo all His sufferings voluntarily.” Could Christ not have escaped the Jews and avoided the Crucifixion? Could He not have struck them with blindness and slipped away? On another occasion, did they not attempt—

—to throw Him down from the mountain’s brow because He said that He was the Son of God, only for Him to pass through their midst and depart? But His hour had not yet come. When His hour did come, He said, “The hour has come, and we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over,” and so forth. Socrates says this: “You would continue sleeping forever, unless God, in His care for you, were to send someone else to you.” In other words, we would always remain asleep unless God took pity on us and sent someone to help and save us. Philosophers said these things, not the people of Israel.

Someone might claim that they had been paid to say them. Otherwise, I do not know why men entirely removed from these matters would have spoken in this way.

Then there are the oracles—the devil and the Sibyls. The oracles spoke of the coming of Christ. What does this show? That God marshaled every spirit, both clean and unclean, to speak of Christ and of His coming. Listen: there was the Cumaean Sibyl, the Erythraean Sibyl, and the Sibyl of Myrge, just as we speak of the oracle of Delphi. Listen to what one of them says: “A maiden shall one day come upon this afflicted Greek land...” At some time, it says, upon this—

On this tormented earth, “without fault,” without sin, “there shall be born in the flesh one who beholds the tireless Divinity, and by healing the passions he shall undo corruption.” A sinless one, he says—a sinless Divinity—will come in the flesh into this world to take away the sins and transgressions of the world. “And his murder, a murder by the Jews, shall come at the hands of the unbelieving Jewish people, and he shall be hung on high as one condemned to death.” As one condemned to death. Christ did not deserve death. He went up as though He were a criminal, though He was no criminal; as though lawless, though He was not lawless. And here, like a fifth Evangelist, she says, “as one condemned to death.” Do you have a Synaxarion at home? Open it

to the month of November and read the life of the all-wise Saint Catherine, when she contended with the one hundred and fifty pagan philosophers, defeated and silenced them, and converted them, so that they became saints, because they accepted martyrdom. They came to believe through the oracles of their own shrines and gods. Read the life of Saint Catherine on the twenty-fifth of November, and you will find the passage I am relating to you now. And this is not the only testimony given to us Greeks—not the only one. Listen: “Then a mighty work of God shall come to pass, sent to mankind; He shall come clothed in flesh, made like mortals upon the earth.” Then, she says, something great from God will happen among mankind. That is, the majesty of God will be revealed, sent to mankind,

clothed in mortal flesh and made like us upon the earth, just as Baruch says: “He appeared upon the earth and lived among men.” And do you know what else it says? It even tells us what His name will be. The Holy Spirit said through Isaiah, for example, that His name would be called Jesus. And the angel likewise said, “You shall call His name Jesus.” The oracle said this too, even then. Listen to how it puts it: “He bears four vowels, and two consonants.” His name, it says, will have four vowels and two consonants. How many vowels are there in the name Iēsous? Four: iota,

eta, omicron, and upsilon. How many consonants does it have? Two occurrences of sigma. Now someone unfamiliar with these things may say, “Is Iēsous the only name with four vowels and two consonants? How many others could we form?” The oracle anticipates this objection. This is why it says that the vowels and consonants will be such that the numerical value of the name will consist of eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds: “Eight units, as many tens, and in addition eight hundreds.” And indeed, Iēsous adds up to 888—three eights.

Iota is 10, eta is 8—and Holy Scripture, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse, the Apostle, the Kingdom of Heaven. Let me begin again, because we have mixed them up. Iota has the value 10, and eta 8; 10 and 8 make 18. Sigma is 200, making 218. Omicron, from the ending ous, is 70, making 288. Upsilon is 400. What total does that give us?

Six hundred and eighty-eight, and the final sigma adds another two hundred, making eight hundred and eighty-eight. Eight units, it says, eight tens, and eight hundreds. It settles the matter completely. This will be the Son of God, who will put on flesh and voluntarily suffer everything for the love of the world. Did this happen or not? If others reject Christ, that is perhaps somewhat understandable. But for us Greeks to reject Christ is utterly unthinkable. Shall I tell you more? Listen. What did Christ say in the Apocalypse, and even earlier? “I am,” He says, “the Alpha and the Omega.” For us, A and Omega are the beginning and the end

of the alphabet. What other language in the world has Alpha and Omega? None. Only the Greek alphabet has Alpha and Omega. And what is the Greek alphabet? It is the language of the Angels, the language of Holy Scripture, the language of the Church, the language of Wisdom—the language capable of expressing every meaning, even the loftiest. No other language can express what the Greek language can. That is why it is under attack and why it is being dismantled today: so that people will not understand Holy Scripture or know and comprehend the texts of the Church. It is deliberate.

How many units, how many tens, and how many hundreds does the Greek language have? Do you know? It has eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds. Did you know that? The Greek language demonstrates the divinity of Christ and the Holy Trinity. Did you know that? If you did not, then learn it. Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta: eight units, up to nine. Iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi: eight tens. Rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega: eight hundreds. The Greek language is sacred.

It symbolizes Christ and the Holy Trinity. If Christ is not God, the number cannot be 888 if the one and the eight are taken away. Christ is the Holy Trinity; the Holy Trinity is Christ and the Holy Spirit—they are one. Was it by chance that Alexander was sent down there and brought the Greek language with him? By chance? Was it by chance that he said to the rabbi, “Give me the keys of the city, because the one who is coming belongs to me”? Was it by chance that Alexander was told, “He belongs to me, and the city is mine, and they will give you the keys”? Are these things mere coincidence? To this day there is an altar on the slope there in Little Galilee, where they buried Patriarch Benedict, who died the other day, at the place where the city’s high priest met Alexander the Great and gave him the keys.

And Alexander the Great died at the age of thirty-three. Is that a coincidence? Was it by chance that Christ, when He saw the Greeks, said, “Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified”? If we do not see these things because we have erased them in our unbelief, our souls will see them when we depart—though now we glimpse only a little of the whole. For what purpose is this Greek language destined? What is its purpose, and what will this God, Christ, accomplish through Greece, through Greek letters, and through the alphabet? And these things are spoken by the oracles—that is, by the demons. They too are pressed into service to speak about the One whom the whole world must come to know. Yet we know nothing of these things. These are not only the things spoken by Isaiah, the fifth Evangelist, or by Ezekiel, or by the Prophets, or by David, and by so many others. The oracles speak; the philosophers speak.

Therefore, no one will be able to say that God failed to do what was necessary to help mankind. And no one today can say that there is no light. People spend eight, ten, fifteen, or twenty years at a school desk learning falsehoods, yet they will not give even one hour of their lives to learning the Gospel. And still they judge and condemn the Gospel, and everything the Gospel teaches, without ever having read it. If you read it and then reject it, that at least can be understood. But to speak without having read it—that is incomprehensible. It is an offense against reason, both on the part of the speaker and of those who listen to him. You should stop him at once and ask: “Where do you stand, sir? Have you studied the matter? Have you read it?”

Thank you. If I were to speak about medicine, for example, when I know nothing of Asclepius, how could I speak? I would make myself ridiculous. And yet we speak with authority, declaring that these are mysteries invented to deceive people, that religion is the poison of the people, that it has lulled them to sleep, and so on—and we think ourselves clever. If we did not die, I would call you clever and shake your hand right here. But since we do die, we shall discuss on the other side how matters truly stand. Everything, then, has come about through the love and providence of God. And He has spoken to us about all these things. He told us, therefore, that the conception of Christ would be different. And it had to be different, because what we lost along the paths of sin was our life. Death means separation from God.

Therefore, since mankind suffered from death, a remedy had to be found, and the only remedy for death is life. And because no one possesses life except God, God Himself came into the world to give mankind what was lacking: life. That is why His side is called life-giving, His Cross life-giving, His Tomb life-giving, and His Chalice the Bread of Life; His Body and Blood are the Bread of Life. Christianity is not merely about wishing one another “many years”; Christianity is life. And that is how we must approach it. This is why we need this close relationship with the Holy Chalice, with the Bread of Life, with the Chalice of Life. We are in need of life.

If we do not partake of life, we are extinguished, like chandeliers that do not share in the light. That is why, when the priests prepare the Prothesis in the morning and take out the Lamb, among the other beautiful and profound words they also say: “Neither an angel nor an archangel, but the Lord Himself saved us from the curse of the Law.” He came to give mankind life as well. He has left this life in His Church through the Mysteries. The person who receives the Body and Blood of Christ enters into communion with life and possesses life. It is like this: he abides in the vine and the vine in him; he draws life from the vine and produces leaves, clusters of grapes, wine, sugar, and alcohol. All these flow from the root. This is why, directly above the Royal Doors, there is the Mystical Supper and the saying, “I am the vine; you are the branches,” as Christ says in the fifteenth chapter of John. People do not know this. They come, light their candle, and wait to receive the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy.

What good is the antidoron to you, my dear? What good is an icon of the Theotokos? What good is the blessing of water? You need life. You leave Life itself in the Holy Chalice and take the blessing instead. That too is good and holy, but it does not save; it does not save. For the remission of sins and eternal life, it is Christ Himself who gives you the ticket there, before the Royal Doors, to every person who prepares through metanoia, through Holy Confession, and then approaches and receives for the remission of sins and eternal life. He carries his good works in his suitcase and his ticket, which is given to him here at the Royal Doors through the hand of the priest. Mankind is journeying into eternity. Thoughts such as these should fill us during these days—strange things, of course, as you know.

Poor Joseph found himself in this difficult position. How could he understand that the Holy Spirit had entered? How could he comprehend such things? “Like rain upon the fleece,” as Gideon says—how could he understand it? Do you hear the dew falling at night? No. You take the fleece, the wool you forgot in the courtyard, and in the morning you wring it out and fill a basin with water. When did it rain? It was the dew that fell. And when did that dew fall? Did anyone perceive it? Just as rain falls upon the fleece, so the Most Holy Theotokos conceived. How could Joseph understand such a mystery?

Joseph, then, wished to put her away secretly. Joseph was not given to her as a husband. The Gospel calls him her husband because that is how it had to appear to other people, since if a woman—especially a young girl—appeared pregnant without a husband...

she would be stoned. Do not judge by women today, who proudly display a pregnant belly without having a lawful husband. Woe to them on the day of Judgment. She would have been stoned; and to prevent this, the providence of God arranged for this man to be given as her protector, to shelter her from the Law like an umbrella, so that she would not be stoned. He would also help her flee to Egypt and face all the later dangers that threatened the Child because of the malice of Herod and the others, as you yourselves have known since your school days. When the Most Holy Theotokos returned from the hill country of Judah, she was three months pregnant. A fourteen-year-old girl who is three months pregnant begins to show. Where could she go? She said many things, but she was not understood. “You must leave.”

Should he send her away? He feared God. Should he send her away? He felt compassion for her. Should he expose her publicly and denounce her, so that she would certainly be killed? What was he to do? “I will take you away one night and leave you somewhere else, in another city. And if they discover that you have no husband and that you are carrying a child in this way, you will suffer terribly. If you escape, then you escape. I cannot keep you here.” This is a great lesson—not a dogmatic one, but a moral one. My dear friends, would there be such an outbreak of fornication and adultery today if there were no people to feed and foster these situations? There would not. You may ask, would they be eliminated entirely? No, but they would be reduced to a minimum. Satan begins working these things from the school years onward. One girl defends another’s supposed rights, and she too becomes corrupted.

Each one defends the other’s supposed rights and becomes corrupted. Indeed, anyone who tells the father, the teacher, or the headmaster so that they can prevent such a situation is regarded as a traitor. And so, out of fear of being branded a traitor, a person says nothing. Instead, she carries secret notes tucked inside the other girl’s blouse, holds on to the telephone for her, gives her money, and tells lies to her mother and to the school, and so on. In this way, fornication and adultery are aided from the earliest childhood years. Woe to the person who has done such things in life and does not repent. And I would not be far wrong if I said that, to some degree, we have all become entangled in such things, that no one has confessed this sin, and that the guilt remains hanging over us for the corruption we allowed others to fall into. Examine your life from your childhood onward. If you have ever done anything like this...

Repent, confess it, and from now on be watchful against becoming involved in such efforts. A person who has done this bears a very grave share of the sin of all those for whom he created the setting and the conditions in which they became, or are becoming, corrupt—whether young people or married people. The angel intervened and said to Joseph, “That which is conceived in her,” as I told you, “is of the Holy Spirit.” This is why He will be given this name, and all the rest. And what you now hear, what is happening to you and causing you such anguish, was written by the Prophet Isaiah eight hundred and fifty years before Christ: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son,” and so forth. This simple man accepted it and found the answer, because when a person sincerely seeks a solution, an answer to his perplexity, God is able to satisfy him and give him that answer.

He is able. But we have never sought as we ought, and that is precisely why we have not received an answer and why we still have questions and problems. Joseph kept her with him, then worked beside her and stood by her. He took her away by night and fled to Egypt, remained there, helped her with the needs of the little Child, and afterward they returned together, and so on. Then, after Jesus was twelve years old, we see Joseph disappear from the account. It seems that he had already fallen asleep in the Lord, and from then on this betrothed guardian, Joseph, no longer appears on the scene. “And she gave birth,” it says, “to her firstborn Son.” Does that mean she also had a second-born son? No. The firstborn is the one...

who opens the womb. Suppose I have one son. What is he—a second-born? He is both firstborn and only-begotten: firstborn and only-begotten. Never be troubled when you hear the word “firstborn,” as though there must also be a second-created because there is a first-created. Who, then, is the second-created? In the same way, there is none. Let us not be deceived. He is firstborn of His Mother and firstborn of the Father. Read the first chapter of Hebrews: “When God brings His firstborn Son into the world.” Who is the second-born? Will there be one? Our Lord is firstborn of His Mother and firstborn of the Father; only-begotten of His Mother and only-begotten of the Father. Do not be troubled. These are not texts from which Jehovah’s Witnesses, Protestants, and others can draw support. We explain them carefully for you. The Most Holy Theotokos is Ever-Virgin. She is Virgin before giving birth, during the birth, and after the birth. This is what the three stars of the Theotokos signify: before, during, and after the birth. Ever-Virgin.

There is no answer to that. Hold fast to everything our Holy Church teaches, and especially to the Creed. There is one more thing we must notice. The angel said, “For He will save His people from their sins.” What people? He has not even been born yet, and already He has a people? Why? Is He only the son of the Most Holy Theotokos? He is also the Son of God.

As the Son of God, He also has a people. The Forerunner said the same: “He who comes after me”—six months younger according to His humanity—“was before me.” Yet He is greater, because He is also God. The angel says the very same thing here: “For He will save His people from their sins.” Let people not deceive themselves into thinking that by doing good works they can somehow make their sins disappear. Sins do not melt away; sins are forgiven. And the One who forgives them is Christ.

Let no one hold on to a sin in the certainty that he will supposedly pay it off with some good work. If he also wishes his good works to be found before God, he must surrender his sins through metanoia—repentance—and confession.

Εν τούτοις, παρότι είναι τόσο σοβαρό και τόσο καλό στον άνθρωπο, καθόλου σχεδόν δεν ενδιαφέρεται ο άνθρωπος. Ακόμη δε ούτε καν το ξέρει ο άνθρωπος ότι προορίζεται να γίνει Θεός. Θεός εγώ; Ναι. «Θεοί εστέ και υιοί Υψίστου πάντες». Τότε, εφόσον δεν πρόκειται να γίνεις Θεός, τι κοινωνείς; Θεό. Σαν τι φαντάζεσαι ότι κοινωνείς όταν κοινωνείς; Δεν κοινωνείς Θεό; Δεν κοινωνείς Αυτόν, τον Θεόν, τον Ενανθρωπίσαντα; Τότε γιατί τον κοινωνείς, γιατί επικοινωνείς μαζί του, ποιος ο σκοπός, εάν δεν πρόκειται να γίνουμε θεοί; Κατά φύση θα γίνουμε θεοί;

Κατά χάριν. Φυσικός Υιός του Θεού είναι μόνο ο Χριστός. Εμείς είμαστε κατά χάριν παιδιά του Θεού. Ο Χριστός έχει φυσικό Πατέρα τον Πατέρα. Εμείς έχουμε κατά χάριν, διαμέσου του Ιησού. Λέμε τον Πατέρα, Πατέρα εμείς. «Πάτερ ημών, ο εν τοις ουρανοίς». Με τον Χριστό τι γινόμαστε; Ένα. Κατά χάριν ένα, όταν επικοινωνούμε μαζί του, όταν κοινωνούμε από αυτόν, όταν μας κάνει αυτός μετάγγιση αίματος μέσα μας. Μεγάλο πράγμα για τον άνθρωπο και, εντούτοις, ο άνθρωπος ή δεν ξέρει καθόλου, δεν ξέρει τίποτα περί αυτών, ή ξέρει μερικά και εκείνα όχι σωστά. Ο άνθρωπος θα πρέπει να το γνωρίσει πλέον. Τι να γνωρίσει;

Χρειάζεται πίστη να παρακολουθηθεί όλη αυτή η υπόθεση, στην προεργασία, στην πράξη και γενικά στον επίλογο. Και μέχρι σήμερα χρειάζεται πίστη. Αλλά ο άνθρωπος, όπως ξέρετε, έχει δώσει τα πρωτεία, τα έχει πάρει από το αυτί του, όπως έλεγα το πρωί, και τα έχει δώσει στο μάτι του, τα έχει δώσει στο μυαλό του, τα έχει δώσει στη γνώση του. Δεν θέλει να πιστέψει ο άνθρωπος. Θέλει να ιδεί, θέλει να εξετάσει, θέλει να το καταλάβει αυτός. Μα μπορείς να καταλάβεις τις ενέργειες του Πνεύματος του Αγίου; Τι εκατάλαβες, άνθρωπε, από αυτά που σε περιβάλλουν; Ποιο μυστήριο έλυσες από αυτά που σε περιβάλλουν; Πώς ομιλώ αυτή την ώρα και πώς ακούς εσύ; Ποιος ωτορινολαρυγγολόγος μπορεί να μας αναπτύξει πώς ακούει ο άνθρωπος;

Πώς γίνεται; Όχι ότι έτσι, παλμοί, πράγματα, θάματα. Όχι, αυτά δεν τα έφτιαξες εσύ. Αυτά τα έχει φτιάξει άλλος και έχει δώσει νόμο ο άλλος να γίνονται, για να ακούς. Πώς γίνεται; Μα μήπως η Παναγία μας, όταν της είπε αυτό το παράξενο πράγμα ο Άγγελος, όπως ενθυμείστε από τα περιστατικά του Ευαγγελισμού, τι είπε εκεί πέρα; «Πώς έσται μοι τούτο», λέει, «επεί άνδρα ου γινώσκω;» Έτσι θέλουμε και εμείς, άντρα και γυναίκα, για να παραδεχτούμε ότι έφεραν παιδί στο είναι. Δεν θέλουν οι άνθρωποι αυτά τα παράξενα. Θέλουν όλα να τα περνάνε από τη λογική τους. Και τι σε πληροφορεί η λογική; Πώς βλέπεις, άνθρωπε; Με τα μάτια μου βλέπω. Σοβαρά; Αλλά δεν έτυχε ποτέ να περάσει κάποιος μπροστά και να μην τον δεις;

Στον γιατρό, και πέφτει κάτω και τον σκίζει και τον κάνει κομμάτια. Πιστεύει στο αεροπλάνο και μπαίνει. Πιστεύει στο αυτοκίνητο και πηγαίνει. Πιστεύει και παίρνει το ψωμί. Πιστεύει τα πάντα. Πιστεύει τον δάσκαλο που του λέει «δύο και δύο κάνουν τέσσερα». Γιατί κάνουν τέσσερα; Πιστεύει στα πάντα και έτσι προχωρεί. Όταν φτάσει όμως το θέμα του Χριστού, το θέμα εδώ, εδώ δεν πιστεύω. Αυτά είναι παραμύθια, αυτά λένε οι άνθρωποι που έχουν ευσεβείς μπροστά τους. Εγώ έχω γνώση. Σοβαρά; Σαν τι γνώση έχεις; Σε τι θέμα έχεις γνώση; Μπορείς να μου πεις πού σου φυτρώνει το νύχι σου και πώς εδώ, το πίσω μέρος, βγάζει αίμα και εδώ δεν βγάζει; Λύσε μου το πρόβλημα αυτό. Πώς γίνεται και πώς γίνεται; Πώς το ένα είναι νεκρό και το κόβεις και το άλλο δεν είναι; Τι έλυσες; Μπορείς να μου πεις ποιος τρυπάει τα μαλλιά σου, που είναι σαν μακαρόνι; Η άλογος φύσις;

Μυστήριο έχει λύσει ο άνθρωπος; Έχει λύσει κανένα που τον περιβάλλει; Σύνολο μυστήριο. Πώς η μητέρα σου πίνει μαύρο κρασί και σου κάνει άσπρο γάλα; Πώς τρώει κουνουπίδια και λάχανα και σου κάνει γάλα; Πώς γίνεται αυτό το πράγμα; Πώς, όταν συλλαμβάνει η γυναίκα, αμέσως το στήθος αρχίζει και φτιάχνει γάλα, κατάλληλο για το στομάχι αυτού του παιδιού που θα βγει;

Έφτιαξε τα κόκκαλα μέσα στον άνθρωπο, όπως ωραιότατα λέγει ο Σολομών στη Σοφία. Πέθους. Άκουσε συνεργείο ποτέ να δουλεύει μέσα σου; Ή άκουσε η μητέρα μέσα συνεργείο να φτιάχνουν δόντια και να τα σμαλτώνουν τα δόντια, να τα χαράσσουνε για να αλέθουν και να τα κάνουνε και κυνόδοντα; Άκουσε ποτέ μέσα; Τι έλυσες, άνθρωπε; Δεν ντρέπεσαι να μιλείς τέτοια πράγματα;

το Θαυμασίος. Αλλά ο εγωισμός, επαναλαμβάνω, δεν μας αφήνει. Μη ζητάτε, λοιπόν, το πώς. Μη ζητάτε όταν βάνει ο Θεός το χέρι του στη μέση. Και μη θέλουμε να γίνουμε εμείς ανώτεροι από την Παναγία, η οποία έπαιξε τον ρόλο αυτόν. Τα έζησε τα πράγματα, τα αντιμετώπισε τα πράγματα και, εν τέλει, σήκωσε τα πανάγια χέρια της και είπε: «Ιδού η δούλη Κυρίου· γένοιτό μοι κατά το ρήμα σου», και παραδόθηκε. Διότι από τη στιγμή που παραδίδεται ο άνθρωπος, τα πράγματα αλλάζουν. Από τη στιγμή που παραδίδεται. Εάν ο άνθρωπος δεν παραδοθεί, δεν καταθέσει το εγώ του, δεν μπορεί να κάνει τίποτα. Εντούτοις, ο Θεός μας μίλησε ώστε, όταν πραγματοποιηθούν αυτά, να πιστέψουμε. «Ταύτα», λέει, «εγράφησαν ίνα πιστεύσητε». Δεν εγράφησαν εκεί έτσι ως έτυχε. Εμείς δεν βρισκόμεθα σήμερα προ Χριστού, ώστε να πιστέψουμε στα μέλλοντα να συμβώσι. Εμείς καλούμεθα να πιστέψουμε σε εκείνα τα οποία συνέβησαν. Έχουμε πεπατημένη εδώ, έχουμε ιστορικά πράγματα. Υπήρχε, κύριοι, Πλάτων; Βέβαια υπήρχε. Έζησες εσύ και τον είδες;

Άλλοι τα γράψαν. Άλλοι. Ναι, και εδώ τα γράψαν άλλοι. Ήσαν άλλοι εκεί. Αν πω εγώ στον γιο μου ότι το 1940 έγινε αυτό, επήγα στην Αλβανία, υπέστην εκείνο και λοιπά, τι θα μου πει ο γιος; «Ψέματα λες»; Όταν μου λέει ο πατέρας μου: «Πήγες στο Εσκί Σεχίρ, πήγες στη Μικρά Ασία, υπέφερες τούτο, κόψαν τα χέρια, στη Σμύρνη υπόμεινες το καράβι» και λοιπά, «ψέματα λες, δεν ήμουν εγώ εκεί να πιστεύω»; Έτσι είναι;

Το Ι είναι 10, το Η είναι 8 και Αγία Γραφή, Ανάσταση, Αποκάλυψη, Απόστολος, Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Να τα πω πάλι από την αρχή, γιατί τα μπερδέψαμε. Το Ι έχει 10, το Η έχει 8· 10 και 8, 18. Το Σ είναι 200· 218. Το Ο από το ΟΥΣ, 70· 288. Το Υ, 400. Πόσα μας γίνονται;

Συνεπώς, δεν θα βρεθεί κανένας που να πει ότι ο Θεός δεν έκαμε εκείνα που έπρεπε, να βοηθήσει τον άνθρωπο. Και δεν θα μπορεί κανένας σήμερα να πει ότι δεν υπάρχει φως. Κάνουν οι άνθρωποι 8, 10, 15, 20 χρόνια στο θρανίο να μάθουν ψέματα. Για να μάθουν το Ευαγγέλιο δεν διαθέτουν ούτε μία ώρα στη ζωή τους και κρίνουν και επικρίνουν το Ευαγγέλιο και γενικά ό,τι το Ευαγγέλιο διδάσκει, χωρίς να το έχουν διαβάσει. Να το διαβάσεις και να το απορρίψεις, αυτό το καταλαβαίνεις. Αλλά, χωρίς να το έχεις διαβάσει, να ομιλείς, αυτό δεν το καταλαβαίνεις. Είναι εναντίον της νοημοσύνης γενικά, και αυτού που ομιλεί αλλά και αυτών που τον ακούνε. Διότι πρέπει αμέσως να του αφαιρέσεις τον λόγο. Πού είσαι, κύριε; Έχεις εγκύψει; Έχεις διαβάσει;

Αυτός ο καημένος ο Ιωσήφ ευρέθηκε μπροστά στη δύσκολη αυτή θέση. Πού να καταλάβει ότι Πνεύμα Άγιον εισήλθε; Πού να τα καταλάβει αυτά τα πράγματα; «Ως υετός επί πόκον», που λέγει ο Γεδεών, πού να καταλάβει; Ακούς εσύ τον τρόπο που πέφτει η δροσιά το βράδυ; Όχι. Παίρνεις το ποκάρι, τα μαλλιά, που το ξέχασες στην αυλή, και το στύβεις το πρωί και βγάζεις μία λεκάνη νερό. Πότε έβρεξε; Δροσιά έπεσε. Και πότε έπεσε αυτή η δροσιά; Την κατάλαβε κανείς; Ως περ υετός επί πόκον, έτσι συνέλαβε και η Παναγία μας. Πού να το καταλάβει αυτό το θέμα ο Ιωσήφ;
