Summary

The Nativity is presented as the source of every Christian feast because the same Christ who was born was baptized, crucified, resurrected, ascended, and will return in glory. Matthew traces Christ through Abraham, David, the Babylonian exile, Joseph, and Mary, while Luke traces Him back through Adam to reveal Him as both Son of the Virgin and Son of God. Humanity inherited death and separation from God through Adam, and only Christ, who is Life Himself, can heal death and restore human beings to communion with God.

The good God has granted us the grace to be together once again.

Our gathering tonight brings us before a matter of the greatest importance for every Christian: the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a great feast that moves all people—I would even venture to say, those who are indifferent and cold. How much more should it move us Christians, who say that we have some measure of faith and put it into practice. So this evening I would like to speak on the occasion of the great feast of the Nativity of Christ, which in a few days we are preparing to celebrate—some as we should, and others in their own way. I would venture to say, together with the divine John Chrysostom, that it is the greatest feast one could imagine.

For... for from this event flow all the other feasts: Golgotha itself, the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the Second Coming that we await. We give thanks because the One who was born is the same One who received circumcision, was baptized, was crucified, died, was buried, and ascended.

Yes, He ascended. And I repeat: it is He whom we await at the Second Coming. His Nativity is therefore the source of all the other feasts. For this reason, it should be of the greatest interest to us Christians. That someone who became man should die, even though He was God, is not so great a mystery as how God became man and why He became man. If I venture to say that most Christians do not know why God became man, I will not be far from the truth. We have learned to celebrate, though not even in the right way. Still, we celebrate.

We acknowledge the feast, but we have not truly learned its meaning. We have never seriously applied ourselves to...

learning what this event is, what it teaches, and why we need it. That is why I am often saddened when I meet people who have been in the Church for years yet do not understand the truths that our Holy Church sets before us each year.

The greatest person ever to stir the hearts of humanity through the ages is our Lord Jesus Christ. In a few days, I repeat, we shall once again celebrate the remembrance of His birth. If one wished to speak with exactness, one could say that greater importance belongs to...

Holy Scripture and Bethlehem, and only afterward comes Jerusalem.

The great events that should move us and bring us to our knees are Nazareth and then Bethlehem—the place where He was conceived and the place where He was born—and afterward all the other events that took place.

Even if a person learns everything and experiences everything, unless he learns why Christ came into the world, he will not be benefited. He will not take the proper stance or make use of what Christ brought into the world. God became man, my beloved, so that man might become god by grace. He descended so that we might ascend; He humbled Himself so that we might be exalted. He died so that we might live. Only then, I believe, do we give His coming its proper interpretation and its rightful place within us and within our lives, so that we may be benefited by Christ's coming into the world. The Nativity of Christ is a great event. It is not merely a feast that gives people an opportunity to meet, to enjoy a meal and good company, or to receive some extra money from their work because of Jesus. This is a spiritual matter, and that is how a person should approach it. Our Christ is one of...

the four persons and the one sacred symbol whose history was written not from the moment they appeared or were born, but long beforehand. What makes the person of Jesus stand out all the more brilliantly is this history that precedes Him. Our Church, which alone possesses the Spirit of God, leads us into these things. Around every great event she appoints a preparatory Sunday, called the Sunday Before, and afterward another Sunday, celebrated as the Sunday After. This happens at the Nativity of Christ, at Theophany, and at the Exaltation of the Precious Cross. We have a Sunday Before and a Sunday After.

These two Sundays frame the central event. On the Sundays Before, the types, prophecies, and images relating to the event or to the person who will play the principal role and give rise to the feast are always set forth. I repeat: the four persons are our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Precious Forerunner; the one sacred symbol is the Precious Cross. Their history was written beforehand. We know many things about them before they appear upon the stage of history.

There is also a threefold sign that points unmistakably to our Christ and makes Him worthy of every person's attention—a threefold sign possessed by no other human being, however great anyone has been or may become in this world. My own life appears upon the stage from the moment I am born, and my record closes on the day I die. This is true of everyone. No one knew when I would be born; my existence became known only from the day of my birth. But this is not so with Christ. Concerning our Christ, we know when He would be born, where He would be born, and how He would be born. These are three extraordinary things, three arrows that set Him upon a definite course...

identify Him, and declare, as though God Himself were speaking, 'You are the One,' or, 'He is the One.' All this preparation, made so that our Christ would remain hidden from no one, leaves us without excuse. This is why we say that our Christ has a history written in advance. This, I say, is what above all points Him out unmistakably, and we must come to know it. There is no work of salvation apart from Him, no merely human salvation, no self-salvation; there is only salvation through Christ. And because all of us, from now until the final consummation of the ages, will be judged according to Christ, it is necessary...

for everyone to know this. That is why Saint Peter said—as the Apostle and Evangelist Luke records in Acts, chapter four, verse twelve—'There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.' There is no other person. He will judge all humanity. For precisely this reason, preparation was made from the foundation of the world so that this person would be recognized and heeded. Recently, Orthodox Christians too have begun putting up Christmas trees under Western influence; may they be blessed. I do not wish either to examine or to condemn this. But as for this so-called Christmas tree...

if someone wished to personify it—and also what is called Great and Holy Friday—and to say that it truly represents Christ as a tree laden with every good gift that He brings to humanity, and then took hold of that tree and shook it, do you know where its roots would be found? They would not be found in Mary, our Most Holy Theotokos; they would not be found in Nazareth, Bethlehem, or Golgotha. They would be found in Paradise, where two human beings stood before God and Satan. From that very time, God spoke of Christ's coming into the world, and this was a consolation for...

the human race in the persons of Adam and Eve. There we find the first reference to the event that will take place the day after tomorrow. There too this matter is revealed and resolved—the matter we heard today from the Evangelist as he explained the manner in which the Savior was conceived: 'Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.' There the words we shall hear from Saint Paul in the epistle reading on the night of the Nativity of Christ, the day after tomorrow, find their fulfillment: 'When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law.'

God was the first to speak of Christ's coming into the world in this extraordinary manner—of this extraordinary conception and pregnancy. I repeat: when there were only two human beings and Satan standing before Him, God spoke of this extraordinary event. For the conception is extraordinary, as those of you who attended church today heard, and as those who read the Evangelist's account of Jesus' human genealogy know. When God threatened Satan, He threatened him through Jesus, through the seed of the woman. Read the first Gospel—not Matthew. Matthew is not the first evangelist in this sense. Read the one who first proclaimed the good news.

One day the Son of God would become the Son of the Virgin, so that man might once again become a son of God. Moses wrote this by revelation, and it is recorded in Genesis 3:15. That verse is the first Gospel. From it humanity draws courage and waits in hope. Not only the Greeks, and not only the Jews, but the whole world has preserved from it some dim expectation—some more clearly than others, according to the light given to them—of the coming of One who would change humanity's destiny. There it is written: 'I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall crush your head, and you shall strike His heel.'

God declares that the seed of the woman will crush your head because of what you have done, while you will bite His heel. And that is exactly what happened. This was fulfilled at Golgotha. Satan bit the heel of Jesus, but his own head was crushed, because behind the Cross stood the Resurrection, which he could not see; and so he was defeated. The extraordinary point explained by the Evangelist today, for those who paid attention, is that he presents the woman as having seed. Yet the seed does not come from the woman; it comes from the man. And he emphasized this repeatedly today—forty-two times: Abraham begot Isaac, not Sarah; Isaac begot Jacob, not Rebekah; Jacob begot Judah and his brothers, not Rachel. Men beget, even to this day; women give birth.

The woman is the flowerpot, the field, the soil that is sown; she carries the seed, tends it, keeps it warm, and brings forth what was sown. If she is not sown, she does not conceive, nothing sprouts, she does not give birth, and she has nothing to bring forth; she must be sown. And so the men sowed and brought the whole genealogical tree of Jesus down to His supposed father and Mary's betrothed husband, Joseph—yet it was from her that Christ was born. Did that not strike you, if you were paying attention? Down to Jacob, the father of Joseph, everything proceeds naturally.

But when the genealogy reaches Joseph, it says, “the husband of Mary, from whom Christ was born.” Joseph did not beget Him. So how did everything change here? Here the conception had to be extraordinary. For if the birth were natural, we would simply have one more human being. The birth had to be supernatural; this whole event had to be supernatural. The Evangelist then explains: If you are astonished, wait, and I will tell you that the birth of Jesus Christ was not like Abraham begetting Isaac, Isaac begetting Jacob, or Jacob begetting Judah, but happened in another way. And he explains what I told you earlier: “She was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” Within the New Testament there is a descent, a line that brings God down through Abraham...

...and brings Him forth as the Son of the Virgin. The Apostle and Evangelist Matthew relates these things in his first chapter, as we heard today. There is also another Evangelist, the third, Luke, who takes this Son of Mary at about thirty years of age and traces His genealogy backward. The one genealogy comes down to the Most Holy Theotokos, while the other goes back and shows that He is not only the Son of the Virgin but also the Son of God, ending with “Adam, the son of God.” Open your Gospel—it is simple enough—to the third chapter, from verse 33 onward. There you will see the genealogical tree, and it will be shown that the Son of the Virgin was also the Son of God.

I will tell you at once why. Why were all these extraordinary things necessary? Why all this prior preparation? Why were the three essential things—the where, the how, and the when—revealed concerning this person? Because, as I said, He is the one unique person. Do you remember the sorrowful words spoken by Simeon the God-Receiver when he took Him in his arms? “This Child is appointed for the fall and rising of many.” Some will be cast down because of Him, while others will rise. It depends on how each person receives Him—whether he accepts Him or rejects Him. And so it happened, so it continues to happen, and so it will happen until the end of the ages.

...of God. That is precisely why I say that we would be without excuse—especially we, since all these things were written in our own language, yet we refuse to study them and learn. We are often scandalized, speak coldly, and even conduct ourselves coldly; and sometimes Satan, that wolf, or some heretic devours us, and a person is lost when he had no need to be lost, after all the preparation God made to reveal Christ to him. If you noticed, the Evangelist traces the genealogy of Christ from the Patriarch Abraham, reaches Jesse the Bethlehemite, the father of David, and pauses briefly there. From there...

...he begins again and comes to the deportation to Babylon, where they remained captives for seventy years. Then he moves forward again until he reaches Joseph the Betrothed, Mary's supposed husband, and Mary, from whom Christ was born. He sets out three groups of fourteen generations, making forty-two generations. Yet if someone reads carefully, he will see that although forty-two generations are mentioned, there are not actually forty-two, but two or three fewer; and many people are troubled by this. Let me tell you that...

...a disruption occurred in the genealogy during the years of captivity in Babylon. In the same way, during the occupation we lost registers, civil records, and many other documents, and afterward we compiled new ones from the information available—records which, we might say, were sometimes not one hundred percent accurate. Something similar happened then. Although the Jews were meticulous, they were unable to preserve this second section, between David and the deportation to Babylon, with complete accuracy. They could not maintain the exact genealogical sequence, and that is why this discrepancy appears.

But even if this troubles you, our concern is not how many generations passed. Our concern is to marvel at how impartially the account was written, and through which tribe Christ passed successively until He came to be born of the Most Holy Theotokos. That is the point, and it is what deserves our particular attention—not whether a discrepancy appears, since that too has its explanation, provided a person knows and studies.

There are three arrows. One tells us where He would be born, another tells us how He would be born, and the third tells us when He would be born. The Prophet Daniel tells us when Christ would be born. In the prophecy known as the Seventy Weeks, he says that after sixty-nine periods of seven years—about 483 years—from the issuing of a decree to restore the Temple of Solomon, which Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed, the Ruler would come. And indeed, He came then, 483 years after that date. It is also written...

...by Isaiah, 850 years before Christ. The angel cites this passage to Joseph in a dream, to show him what was taking place and keep him from being scandalized. Isaiah writes in chapter 7, verse 14, that He would come from a Virgin: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,” which means, “God with us.” And indeed, God is with us. God came to dwell among us. “He appeared upon the earth and lived among men,” the Prophet Baruch writes prophetically in his third chapter. When those distinguished men, the so-called Magi...

...learned men with at least four degrees, wise men from the East, arrived, they asked: “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For to us He has already been born. We saw His star in the East and have come to worship Him. Where is the King of the Jews?” Herod, the king of the Jews, did not know where He was. You know that he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him—his whole staff, his entire palace, and everyone around him. So they hurried to ask the scribes, the chief priests, and the others who guarded the Bible and the Law: What does Holy Scripture say about the King, and where is this King of the Jews to be born? What did they answer? In Bethlehem of Judea. Why? Because the Prophet Micah had written through the Spirit of God: “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah...

...are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come forth a Ruler who will shepherd the people with a rod of iron.” You see, then, how carefully everything had been prepared and how serious the matter was, so that no one would fail to recognize Him. When three distinct prophecies speak about one and the same person, and they are fulfilled, then this is that person's identity—this is He. Now all this gives rise to a discussion about whether things truly had to happen in this way. But let me continue. There are people who do not understand and who would have wanted the Savior of the world...

...to have a natural birth. “I want,” someone says, “a man and a woman, so that He may be an acceptable human being.” But if He had been begotten by a man and a woman, we would merely have had another man. We would not have had one who transcends fallen humanity, but simply another ordinary human being—even if the man who fathered Him had been Abraham, who was regarded as the holiest and greatest of men. Saint Gregory Palamas writes and declares this beautifully: “If the Savior had been conceived from a man, He would not have been a new man and the Savior of sinners.” He would not have been a new man and the Savior of those who sin. He too would have carried upon His shoulders the burden of ancestral sin. What did David write about...

...human conception? What does he say? “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” A human being inherits the burden of ancestral sin and is separated from God. Man is born dead. Young mothers may call their child “my little angel,” but the child is no angel at all while unbaptized. When the child is washed in Baptism and rises again, he will still not be a little angel; he will be a little saint. A human being neither becomes an angel by nature, nor would it benefit him to do so, because humanity is higher than the angels. God did not become incarnate for any angel; He did not come for any angel. He came for man, while the angel is sent...

...to help and minister to those who are to inherit salvation. But we have not grasped this. I understand what it means to live an angelic life. But to be an angel by nature—no, I do not understand that, nor do I wish to be one. In our natural world and in this present age, there are certain examples that help us understand why Christ, in His mercy, came for the whole world. Without Christ and outside Christ, man is unfit for the Kingdom of Heaven. If you will permit me to say it, outside Christ man is wild and uncultivated. Let me explain how.

Take a pit from a fine olive tree in the field and plant it. Do you know what that pit will produce? A wild olive tree. That good pit will produce a wild olive. And for this wild olive to become a good cultivated olive tree, you must cut a tau, the shape of a cross, into it with a knife—and if it had a soul, it would cry out. Beneath that tau, beneath that cross, you insert a good and healthy graft from another olive tree, so that the wild tree may become a cultivated olive. Or suppose I take a seed from a choice, genuine orange and plant it. What will it produce? A bitter-orange tree. That too must be grafted: a cross must be cut into it, and a good orange graft inserted beneath it, so that it may become a true orange tree.

So it is with man. Human seed is sinful, wild, dead, and corrupted. That is why, in the theology of our grandmothers, an unbaptized boy was called a little dragon; and in the folk theology, an unbaptized girl was called a little dragon as well. Christ, therefore, could not come in the natural way and be begotten by a man, however great that man might have been. It was impossible. He had to be born supernaturally. That is why, when the genealogy reaches the passages concerning the Theotokos, it does not say, “from whom”—meaning Joseph—“He was born with Mary's assistance.” Rather, it says, “from her He was born,” and then explains how He was conceived. In place of the sinful seed of man...

...the Holy Spirit brought about conception within the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. Did the angel not say this? Do not today's hymns for the forefeast say it? What did the angel tell the elder Joseph when Joseph was considering sending Mary away secretly? What did he say—do you remember? Remember: “That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” Not “that which is born from her”—no. “That which is conceived in her.” What was conceived in Mary's womb was of the Holy Spirit; it was not conceived by a man. “That which is conceived in her.” Just as earlier the seed of Abraham begot Isaac, and so on, here the Evangelist says that the Holy Spirit brought about conception within her.

Pay attention to the beautiful things of our Church. At the Exaltation of the Cross, you should take some basil from the Cross, or a violet, rosemary, or some other blessed plant from the Precious Cross. Then, of course, you should make leaven at home, which you will later use for your offering bread. I do not know whether you do this. If you do not, learn to do it, so that you may behold our faith, behold the Holy Spirit present in the Church, giving life even today and silencing every offshoot of Satan, whatever form it may take.

Take a little basil from the Precious Cross—either on September 14 or on the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross, in the middle of Great Lent—and go home. Put a little flour and warm water in a bowl, without adding any baker’s yeast, anything material, and lay the cross—the basil—on top. That afternoon you will see it begin to ferment and take on the smell of sourdough. The woman of the house feeds the starter, as we say, and by evening you see it overflowing the bowl. Now you have sourdough—not yeast, not some material product of science or chemistry, but something spiritual. Who is it that gives life, producing yeast, producing life within flour bought from the grocer? It is the Holy Spirit. Who is it that, when the priest reads the prayer over the water, makes it incorrupt, gives it life, and keeps it from ever spoiling? It is the Holy Spirit.

So the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the water and preserves it, also gives life to the flour, and it becomes sourdough, as I told you. This same Holy Spirit acted so that the conception took place within her. Sin did not enter, because it must not enter. Otherwise, salvation could not exist. You may ask, “But how can this be?” Let me explain further.

This divine action took place in order to help man in his fallen state—the fall of man and, consequently, of all his descendants. For if poison is poured into a city’s reservoir, every tap will bring forth poisoned water. If we are all of one blood from Adam—from Adam who was dead and cut off from God—then we too are cut off and dead. What, then, was the result of that fall, of that disobedience? What was its result? What had God said would happen if man disobeyed and did not take heed? I will be brief.

“On the day you eat from the tree, you shall surely die.” Death. Have you ever considered, O man, what death means? Death means being cut off from my life. What, then, is the medicine for death? Shall we give injections or apply ointments? What is the medicine for death? Life. Only life heals death. Humanity, therefore, is searching for life. But who possesses life? Does Abraham possess life? Do I possess life? Does Daniel, the greatly beloved, possess life? Do the prophets? Do the angels? We could know the answer—and indeed, we ought to know it. And in the morning, when...

...the Archbishop lifts the portion of Christ at the Proskomedia, he says, among other things: “Neither an angel nor an archangel, but the Lord Himself saved us from the curse of the Law.” All of them participate in life; they are not Life itself. Is this light? Is the lamp we see above us, this chandelier, itself light, or does it participate in light? It participates in light. Look at the chandelier beside it, and at the other one: because they do not participate in the light, they have no light. Man, therefore, was in need of Life. That is why He who is Life itself—God—came to give mankind the medicine, to give life to mankind.

Why are the blood and the water—the foundations of man’s salvation, that is, Baptism and Holy Communion—why is the side from which these two flowed called life-giving: “Your life-giving side”? Why is the Precious Cross called Life-giving? Because life sprang forth from that death. Why is the tomb of our Lord called Life-giving? Why is the Holy Chalice, with the Bread within it, called the Bread of Life? We are speaking about life, then—not about turkey, or pasta, or presents. We are speaking about life. Yet this does not even enter our minds. And here is the proof:

Life came into the world and was given freely to man. We come before the Holy Chalice, before the Bread of Life, and often we mock and scrutinize, with our poisonous tongues, the person who receives Holy Communion. “Didn’t he receive Communion the day before yesterday?” And what have people called Holy Communion? “Soup,” and other such things. Life has come into the world, while you and I remain without a share in that life and have no communion with one another or with Him. Then what are we doing? There was a particular reason why God came into the world, and man must come to recognize this so that he may make use of everything left to him and offered to him by this inn of Jesus.

His sign was there, through those who served as innkeepers. Otherwise, whatever good a person may do, he will remain outside. This is a matter of life; that is why Christ came into the world. There was a particular reason. When phylloxera infects a place, what do people do? They uproot all the diseased vines, burn them, throw them away or bury them, and bring in from abroad or from other places vines—or some other stock—that have not been affected or infected, so that they can establish a new nursery. That is precisely what happened in this case. The Savior had to be free from ancestral sin, free from its burden, free from death, so that He could heal death. There was a particular reason, and this is precisely what we must...

We must give thanks night and day, with our heads bowed, for what God did without asking us and without our deserving it. For there was not one righteous person who could have moved the mercy of God to act upon us. There was not one righteous person—not even Abraham was free from sin. It had to happen in this way, and in this way it happened. Just as the Fall took place, so too did all that followed. Many marvel at this supernatural conception and birth, yet reject it through their own reasoning. But if a person carefully considers what took place at the Fall, he can understand all that is now taking place for his restoration.

“He had to be born of a Virgin,” they say with the mockery of our educated people. Why should the Savior not have been born of a Virgin? What troubles you about it? Does it not fit your logic? Have you solved every other question, so that this alone remains a mystery to you? What have you solved even about yourself, that you demand this too be explained? Are you greater than the Most Holy Theotokos, who fulfilled this role, spoke with the angel, and said to him, “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?” Are you more intelligent than she was? The Most Holy Theotokos received an answer, did she not? Must you, then, also receive an answer? And even if the Holy Spirit explained to you how it would happen, would you understand?

Only the Holy Spirit can explain the things of the Holy Spirit. Only God can explain the things of God. We have been given a white cane, like the one given to the blind, and it is called faith. We must use faith in order to move forward. In every area of life—in science, in the arts, in daily living—man uses faith. Yet when he comes to this, he rejects it through his own reasoning. Have you ever considered what you have inside your mouth? It is a piece of flesh, a strip of skin called the tongue. What is it? Do I know? Will you speak with its edge? No. Yet it performs countless other tasks. It is like a chemist: salty, bitter, sweet...

...sour—it identifies each one at once. What is this? How does it do that? Who made it? Have you solved that mystery? How ridiculous you are! Have you noticed that sometimes, when you go to have a tooth removed, the dentist says, “Be careful of the socket; do not break the socket”? What is the socket, and what does it contain? It is like a manger in which a tooth has grown and been firmly set. That is called the tooth socket. Who made it? Did your mother fashion it inside her womb? Did she take it to a workshop and have it made for you? Who placed your teeth in your mouth? Who shaped them so that you could grind your food, and who gave you canine teeth with which to bite? Who put them there? Who entered your mouth and coated your teeth with enamel? Tell me, who? Something fluid entered your mother’s womb and formed bones.

It formed a heart and lungs and, I suppose, thirty or forty meters of intestines. It joined one part to another, filled them with blood, set them working, and gave each one its purpose. Who made all this? Who made it? Our reasoning reaches its limit. Yet Satan lets us believe everything else. For if we insisted on examining everything and passing it through our own knowledge, through our five senses—the five pairs of oxen from last Sunday’s parable of the Great Supper—we would all be dead. Instead, I trust, and I get into a car. I trust, and I board an airplane.

If I waited to examine whether the pilot was in his right mind, and if I did not trust that he would remain in his right mind until I landed, would I ever board the airplane? It is by faith. By faith I get into a car.

By faith I eat; by faith I walk; by faith I go to sleep, trusting that I will wake again. For if it entered my nous—the spiritual mind—that I might not wake up, I would never sleep. Everything is by faith. By faith I accept it when the teacher tells me that this is A and that is B, and teaches me to form words. “Why, teacher? Why does it form that word? Explain it before we continue.” But he does not explain it; he tells me to continue, and I accept it so that I may learn.

You insist that you will not believe this, yet you believe everything else readily, without effort or anguish. Is that reasonable? Are those sound arguments? How did death come about? How did death enter? Was Eve still a virgin when death came? It was something like this. Saint Joseph Bryennios explains it beautifully. Do you know what he says? “While still a virgin, Eve conceived from the evil one and gave birth to death. While still a virgin, Mary conceived from the Good One and gave birth to Life.” As things happened then, so they happen here. Is that not beautifully expressed? What is the Most Holy Theotokos in this account? What is the relationship? She corresponds to the Eve of old. And what else is set in correspondence?

The old Adam. Through their disobedience, those two shut us out and placed between us the dividing wall of which Paul speaks. They placed sin in the midst and cut us off from God. What miracle occurred when Christ was crucified outside the camp? What was the first miracle when Christ said, “It is finished”? The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. The first two had shut us out and placed a barrier between God and man. Now the two new ones came in their place, corresponding to the first, as I have told you, and they opened the way and made it the Beautiful Gate. What does “Beautiful Gate” mean? Is it more beautiful than the other gates? No. That is not why it bears the name. It is because through it man passes into the Kingdom of Heaven—through these two. In place of the first two, who closed the entrance to God, these two came.

Where the first two closed it through their disobedience, these two opened it for us. That is why the Gate is called Beautiful, because this is where the faithful pass through. Here souls meet their Christ; through Holy Communion they receive their ticket, as it were, and from here they go forward. Have you never been struck by what happens after Holy Communion, when the priest comes out and says, “Save, O God, Your people and bless Your inheritance”? Who are these heirs who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven together with Christ, the heir by nature? Those who received Holy Communion, those who entered into communion. Not those who remain far away, or merely take the antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, and scatter its crumbs over their heads, only for them to fall to the ground and be trampled underfoot. Not those people. It is those who prepared themselves, came with the fear of God, and received Holy Communion. “Save this people of Yours.” This is the people of Christ; these are the ones who will inherit the Kingdom. I am simply pointing to the iconostasis to explain these things to you.

There was, then, a particular reason for these events. Salvation was not to come through some other woman; rather, it followed precisely the opposite path from the Fall. Since the Fall came through a virgin, salvation also had to come through a Virgin. Strange things indeed. People speak about matters to which they have paid no attention, although they ought to consider them carefully. I was deeply struck by the angel’s intervention to reassure Joseph the Betrothed, as you heard today. Joseph was thinking of putting Mary away secretly because he too, being a reasonable man, could not comprehend it, as we say, or account for it. When the Most Holy Theotokos returned from the hill country, as you know, she returned three months pregnant.

She was a young girl of thirteen or fourteen. At three months, the signs of pregnancy had begun to appear. No one could comprehend it. Everyone suspected a secret union, as the hymnographer of the Akathist Hymn says so beautifully. She offered many explanations, but she could not persuade him. Tradition even says that the final plea of the Most Holy Theotokos was to stand before Joseph the Betrothed and say: “By what is written upon my countenance, by Him who is within my womb, let the angels at my right hand and at my left bear witness.” I can tell you nothing more. I am pure; I am without sin. But let the angels who surround me speak of my appointed calling and of Him who is in my womb.

When the aged Elizabeth saw her, she said, “How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Elizabeth was ninety years old, while the Saint was fourteen, and she called her the mother of her Lord. Yet even then, she was not believed. Heaven was watching, and sent the Angel to tell Joseph that matters were not as he thought. Isaiah had written about it, and you had read it many times, but you had not understood it. And now, at this very moment, that prophecy was being fulfilled: what Isaiah had written, that a Virgin would give birth. This, then, is that Virgin. But what strikes me—not from the dogmatic point of view, but from the moral one—is the passage that says: “Being a righteous man, and not wishing to expose her to public disgrace, he considered sending her away secretly.” Some people wonder: what is this elderly man doing beside a young girl?

If this elderly man had not been there, and she had appeared in public pregnant and alone, then according to the Law she would have had to be stoned as an adulteress. That is why the elderly man was given to her. He was not given to her for marital relations, as the Catholics teach. Nor was he given to her so that she might have other children, as the Protestants say. No. He was given to protect her, because otherwise she would have been stoned. But he knew that he himself had nothing to do with her pregnancy. Yet how could he shelter her when, as he supposed, she had brought an unlawful child into his household? Such a thing could not remain beneath his roof. Being righteous, he feared God. So I ask you: would adultery, fornication, and all kinds of premarital relations have spread so widely if people had found no refuge,

and if no one had covered for them? Would we have reached this condition? You may ask me, “Would these sins have disappeared entirely?” No, but they would have been restrained. These evils are especially widespread in the city, where today adultery has reached eighty percent on both sides, among men and women alike, together with fornication and premarital relations. Can we find even one upright young person among our daughters and sons? The damage begins while they are still sitting at their school desks, where one girl considers it a sacred duty to conceal another girl’s corruption. And if anyone reports it, she is called a snitch, or he is called a snitch. Someone who tries to prevent such a situation and tells the father, the teacher, or another person in authority, hoping to avert disaster,

is branded a snitch and made an outcast. So, to avoid being called a snitch, a person passes along the little note, makes the telephone call, tells lies, and covers up the corruption. The same thing happens more generally as well. Many women assist other women: they lend them their car, give them the use of their house, or provide money. This would not happen if people possessed the fear of God shown by Joseph the Betrothed. Joseph the Betrothed will stand as a witness for the prosecution against all those who helped other people commit sins of the flesh. And what is even sadder is that, among Christians, not one has confessed this as a sin. Indeed, such a person thinks he deserves a crown for it. He does not acknowledge, “I became the cause of this.

I harbored it; I covered it up; I concealed it; I made it easier.” “Whatever happens, I do not know; I will not do it”—that is what Joseph’s decision means. Pay attention to this: these things will hang over us, young and old alike, unless we practice metanoia, repentance, and confess these sins. This passage strikes me deeply whenever I read it, and wherever I may be, for as long as I have breath, I will always cry out that we must prevent disaster, because we are the ones who cover for people in various ways. Remember that grim saying, though people treat it lightly: “A castle cannot be taken without a traitor within.” Sadly, we are the ones who make things easier. Joseph says, in effect, “If I take her far away, where no one will recognize her, perhaps she may escape. I do not want her to be killed. I do not want her to be executed.

If they take her for an adulteress, perhaps she may still escape, but I cannot keep her in my house.” That was the difficulty. These are mysteries upon mysteries, my beloved. The Angel says to him, “Take heed, Joseph: He shall save His people from their sins.” He has not yet been born, and already He has a people. For He is not only Mary’s only Son; He is also the Only-Begotten of the Father. He is not only the firstborn of the Theotokos; He is also the Firstborn of God. “He shall save His people.” He has a people, even though He has not yet been born.

This is what the Holy Forerunner says: “He who comes after me was before me.” According to His humanity, Christ would be six months younger; but because He is also God, He is greater and existed before him. In just a few days, my beloved, we are being called to such a great event. Let no one go to Church the day after tomorrow burdened with unconfessed sins. Devote this time to metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession. For when a Father of the Church went to Bethlehem and cried out inside the cave, “What can I offer You, my Christ, for what You have done?” the answer he received was: “Take your sins and offer them to Me.” There is no greater joy in heaven than over one sinner who repents. Through the prayers of Saint Nicholas, in whose memory this holy church is dedicated, and through the prayers of the Holy Fathers who serve here,

in this parish and in this community, may our days be holy, and may we all attain the Kingdom of Heaven, which Christ came to bestow upon us.

Έπρεπε, λέει, να γεννηθεί εκ Παρθένου· ειρωνεία των μορφωμένων μας. Γιατί δεν έπρεπε ο Σωτήρ να γεννηθεί εκ Παρθένου; Τι σου πειράζει εσένα; Δεν στέκεται στη λογική σου; Έχεις λύσει όλα τα άλλα θέματα και αυτό σου είναι τώρα το μυστήριο; Τι έχεις λύσει από τα δικά σου, που θέλεις να σου λυθεί και αυτό; Είσαι ανώτερος εσύ από την Παναγία που έπαιξε τον ρόλο αυτό, που μίλησε με τον Άγγελο και του είπε «πώς έσται μοι τούτο, επεί άνδρα ου γινώσκω;» Είσαι ξυπνότερος εσύ; Πήρε απάντηση η Παναγία, δεν επήρε; Θα πάρεις λοιπόν εσύ απάντηση; Ή, αν σου ερμήνευε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο πώς θα γίνει, θα το καταλάβαινες;

Που σώνει και καλά να μην πιστέψεις· παρά πίστεψέ τα όλα, ακούραστα, χωρίς βάσανα. Αλλά είναι λογική αυτή και είναι επιχειρήματα; Πώς έγινε ο θάνατος; Πώς ήρθε ο θάνατος; Μήπως ήταν Παρθένος ακόμη η Εύα που έγινε ο θάνατος; Κάτι τέτοιο είναι. Το ερμηνεύει ωραιότατα ο Άγιος Ιωσήφ Βρυέννιος. Ξέρετε πώς λέγει; «Παρθένος ούσα, η Εύα συνέλαβε εκ του πονηρού και έτεκε θάνατον. Παρθένος ούσα, η Μαριάμ συνέλαβε εκ του αγαθού και έτεκε ζωήν». Όπως ήσαν τα πράγματα εκεί, έτσι είναι και εδώ. Ωραία δεν το έχει εδώ πέρα; Τι είναι η Παναγία εκεί; Ποια είναι η συσχέτισις αυτή; Της Εύας της παλιάς συσχέτισις. Και εκεί τι μου συσχέτισε;

Η γραία Ελισάβετ, όταν την είδε, είπε: «Πόθεν μοι τούτο, ίνα έλθη η μήτηρ του Κυρίου μου προς με;» Μητέρα του Κυρίου της, ενενήντα χρονών αυτή, δεκατεσσάρων χρονών η Αγία. Τότε και πάλι δεν έγινε πιστευτή. Ο Ουρανός παρακολουθεί και έστειλε τον Άγγελο και του λέγει ότι δεν έχει έτσι το θέμα. Ο Ησαΐας το έχει γράψει, πολλές φορές το διάβασες. Δεν το είδες παραδεκτό. Εν τούτοις όμως, αυτό υπηρετεί σε αυτή την ώρα. Αυτό που γράφει ο Ησαΐας, ότι μια Παρθένος θα γεννήσει. Αυτή λοιπόν είναι η Παρθένος. Αλλά εκείνο που μου κάνει αίσθηση, όχι από δογματικής πλευράς αλλά από ηθικής πλευράς, είναι εκείνο που λέγει: «δίκαιος ων και μη θέλων αυτήν παραδειγματίσαι, εσκέφθη λάθρα απολύσαι αυτήν». Μυστήριο για ορισμένους: τι θέλει αυτός ο γέρων κοντά σε μια παιδίσκη;
