Summary

God creates opportunities for willing people to remember their earthly purpose, while the Devil distracts them from preparing for death and eternity. Rather than blaming society, Christians must examine themselves, restore their lives according to Christ, and prepare personally for divine judgment. As Jonah had to be cast into the sea before the storm subsided, sin must be deliberately cast into the boundless mercy of God so that the soul may be healed and receive Christ.

May the good God grant that we meet again, because everything depends on Him. We contribute a little willingness, and He provides everything else. He is like an invisible hand pressing buttons: the director presses one button and the attendant appears; he presses another and an employee comes, and so on. In something like this way, God creates circumstances and opportunities for those who are willing, in order to remind them

of their purpose here on earth. For there is also another, known as the devil, the enemy of mankind, who seeks to lead people astray and prevent them from making good use of the time they have in this world. We see people—even educated people, even those considered successful by the world—pass through this life as birds pass by, as fish pass by; I do not know what else to say, lest I say, as animals do. A person must fully understand that one day, whether he wishes it or not, he will leave this place. However much he labors, however tightly he clings to this world like an oyster, making what is yours his own and what belongs to others his own, in reality he makes nothing his. He merely records at the registry office that these things belong to him. But they are neither his, nor yours, nor mine. They belong to God. So when a man reflects that one day eight hands and eight feet will come together, lift him up, and carry him away—unless fish devour him in some shipwreck, or wild beasts devour him in some wilderness—they will lift him and take him where he does not want to go.

You know, whenever death is mentioned, people knock on wood and say, “May Death not hear us and come our way.” And yet, whether we want it or not, whether we believe it or not, one day we will leave this world. “And what follows from that?” you may ask. Well then, since you are going to leave, whether you wish it or not and whether you believe it or not, you ought to take care to learn why you came. Where have you come, and where do you now exist? What purpose do you have here? Did you come to stir up the soil—to turn earth, cement, lime, and iron into houses? Is that the reason? Is that why I came here? If that is why you came, you have failed. “Why have I failed?” you may ask. Because one day even this pile of stones will be shaken and destroyed.

What is called civilization will pass away, along with its inventions and sciences. Everything will pass away. “And what will remain, Father?” Only the soul will remain. But who believes that he has a soul? Who truly believes that he has a soul? If people believed they had souls, they would labor for their souls, watch over them, and care for them. One of the great Fathers of the Church—I saw that you have a large icon of him here in your Church—the one called Basil the Great, said that the human person is a partnership of soul and body. In this partnership, this shared enterprise, a person must consider which partner should hold the greater share. That share should reasonably belong

to the soul, because the soul can live without the body, but the body cannot live without the soul. The proof is that when the soul departs, we quickly wrap up the body and send it off among the cypress trees. So, he says, if the soul is the principal partner in this enterprise, you must give the larger partner its proper share. But if you are unwilling to watch over, labor for, value, and prepare this soul—the principal partner in your life—then at least divide your care equally. As much as you care for the body, care also for the soul. Yet people conduct their lives in this world as though the soul did not even exist, as though the human person had no soul at all. That, he says, is unjust.

You will be just if you give the soul what it deserves and what properly belongs to it. But even if you are unwilling to do that, he says, you must at least divide your care equally. As much as you care for the body and the flesh, care also for the soul. Yet, as you see, people do not care for the soul as much as they care for the body. Take a mother. How does she look upon her child? Does she see a soul, or does she see a precious ornament? She sees a precious ornament. Heaven forbid that the child should come home from school at midday with blood on him. But if he comes home possessed by wickedness, she says, “Oh, he will grow out of that when he gets older.” That does not trouble her. Heaven forbid that he should have even a slight fever. Yet if his soul is in a bad state, it is not even discussed; she does not notice it. The proof is that the child does not fast

—does not fast, does not go to Church, does not receive Holy Communion as he should, and is not nourished spiritually. She nourishes him bodily. She runs after him, even goes out into the street and makes a spectacle of herself so that she can give him something to eat, lest he lose weight, lest he lose even a few grams, and so that he gets the proper number of calories, and so forth. To a certain extent, she does well. But does she care equally for his soul? No, she does not. She either does not know that the soul exists, or she is unwilling even to engage with the soul. She discusses every other matter relating to the body, but she does not wish to discuss matters relating to the soul. Everything concerning commerce is settled in the marketplace, and everything concerning the body is managed in the fields; but matters of the soul are set in order in the Church. Everything relating to the soul is found there, and it is from there that you will now gain understanding and see results.

Go to Church one Sunday and observe how many people enter, when they enter, how they enter, how they stand, whether they remain until the end, and what they do once they are there. Suppose there are a thousand souls: eighty, a hundred, perhaps a hundred and fifty will come; the other eight hundred and fifty remain outside. They do not acknowledge the soul, they feel no need for the Church, and they attach no importance to it. Nor does a parent grieve because his child, his wife, or someone else in the family does not go to Church. Or if she does go, she receives no good fruit from the Church because she comes unprepared. Where, then, is reason? Where is education? Where is the recognition that the soul exists? Who believes that we will die and give an account, and that we will be taken where we do not wish to go, whether we want it or not?

My beloved, in this age when knowledge has advanced so far, people have landed on the moon, but they have not come down to earth. And if a person does not come down to reality, hear the warning, and understand that he will indeed die, it would have been better for him not to have been born. The matter is that serious. When our Christ faced the ruin of Judas, He said, “It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” For a human being to be born is a great thing. What is born is not some plant or animal, nor is some mansion merely being built. From the moment a human being is conceived in his mother’s womb, that little soul never dies. Will his mother throw the child into a refuse bin? The soul does not die; it will exist throughout eternity. Do you understand what it means to be a human being?

We are beings made for eternity, whether we become radiant or dark; that depends upon us. Therefore, in this time in which we live, when knowledge has advanced so greatly, we must not allow this fundamental matter to escape us: the matter of the soul, for which we will give an account.

We stand before great events in the life of the Church, before the days of Christmas. Has anyone ever given thought to this? And if someone did not know, did he ask a person who does know what these days mean? Are they merely an opportunity for the children to come home from Athens, or for our relatives to visit, so that we may share a fine meal, see one another, and then part again? Is that all? Are they an opportunity for employees and pensioners to receive a thirteenth month’s salary? An opportunity to eat turkey, some kourabiedes, or whatever else these days bring before us? What are they? Is Christmas material or spiritual?

Are we simply to receive all these things? Who offered them? Who is the cause of all these pleasant customs, all these material goods, and all these celebrations? Who is their cause? Let us suppose there is a man named John. What happens? We accept everything John brings, but we do not accept John himself. We accept everything given by the One who is born in Bethlehem during these days, but we do not accept Him. We want no relationship with Him. Is what I am saying true or not? Unbelievers, atheists, opponents of Christ, robbers, and people of every kind—I do not know what else to call them—all receive these benefits, including the holidays

and the salaries, the gifts, the pleasures, and the festive meals. Yet we do not want even to hear of the One who is the cause of them all. Worse still, people blaspheme Him, His Most Holy Mother the Theotokos, His Saints, His clergy, His Churches, and so forth. And what is the great miracle? That He continues to endure us. He gives us health, sunlight, and air. He gives us everything. Or does anyone imagine that these things are his own? Did his mother bring them to him, or did he produce them himself? Who brought anything into this world, or who will take anything away when he departs? Everything belongs to God, yet God Himself is rejected. The God who is everywhere present is today absent from everywhere in our lives. Search your hearts and see. Will you find God there? Will you find Christ there, so that we may celebrate Christmas? Will we find Him, or will we not?

We may find Him hanging there in the house as an icon. We may also find His Mother hanging in an icon, and His Saints as well. There may be a beautiful, large icon corner, with an oil lamp burning day and night, with candles lit and incense offered before it. All these things are good and holy, but He Himself is not there. Does anyone permit Him to speak? Does anyone allow His Most Holy Mother the Theotokos to have an opinion? “No, stay over there. You will not tell me whether I may eat whatever I please.” But this is the forty-day fast. “Fasting? Those things are old-fashioned.”

“Do you want Me there or not?” The only ones whom we permit no voice, the only ones whom we silence, are Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saints. “You may remain there, but you will have no say.” It is like some young people saying to their mother, “Shut up now, woman. Come on, do not speak here.”

She brought him into being, gave birth to him, nursed him, and stayed beside him through the night, as did his father.

He provides for the festive tables, but He does not sit at them. He desires another room.

A room called the soul. That is where Christ dwells; that is where Christ is born. But who permits Him? Who receives Him? Who desires Him? Who seeks His counsel? Who listens to Him? Most of us—even we who are Christians—do none of these things. I am not speaking about those who, for one reason or another, remain far away, look down on these things, and mock us if we make the sign of the Cross or light a candle in a Church. I am speaking about those who say they are Christians and whose identity cards proudly declare, “Orthodox Christian.” Yes—but the Christian life is missing. If there were a way for a person to look within himself, he would be terrified.

What does he have inside himself? A great menagerie of wild beasts. The pig has its swinishness, the fox its cunning, the wolf its savagery, and the peacock, as we know, its vanity. Every animal and every bird has its own characteristic. But we are cunning and carnal; we are wild beasts and foxes—what are we not? There is an entire menagerie within us. Can Christ dwell in such a world, within such a person? Christ cannot dwell there. Christ does not dwell within us on our terms, while we say, “Yes, but I am a Christian; yet I follow the world; but I am…” No. I want you to understand that the human soul—the soul of the believer—has only one seat. I will say it again: the soul of the believer, indeed of every human being, has only one seat, only one place.

For Christ to sit there, the devil must leave that place. And for the devil to sit there, Christ must leave. The two cannot remain together. We imagine that we can reconcile them and seat them side by side: that the Most Holy Theotokos may be there, but fashion as well; that Christ may be there, but the world as well. These things cannot sit together. It must be one or the other. If I am with Christ, I will not be with the world. If I am with the world, I am not with Christ. There is no room for both. The human soul has only one seat, and a person must understand this. So if a person does not desire Christ, does not labor according to Him, and does not listen to Him, then when Christ says, “Have children,” he refuses to have children or a family. “I will use contraception; I do not care.” The Church speaks to him, and he replies, “I will decide where I go and what I do.”

He tells you to be honest, but you say, “I know whom I will steal from, whom I will lie to, what trick I will play, which boundary markers I will move during the night, and what belongs to another person I will take for myself. I will decide what I do in these matters.” And this, as you understand, shows that we do not listen to Him. We keep Him merely as a decorative figure. He adorns our surroundings, our room, or our icon corner, but we do not have Him as our counselor. Now, when a person lives this way toward Christ in this world, whether he likes it or not, he will come face-to-face with Him in the next world, and he will find himself in terrible confusion. Then there will be no time left to do anything. I believe these days are meant to help us turn inward.

We have spent enough of the rest of the year looking outward: at what the neighbor did, what the president did, what the bishop did, what the government did, what happened abroad, and what happened here at home. Look now at your own life, because Christ will not judge you for other people, nor will He ask you what happened in the neighborhood. He will question you personally: “Now let the two of us sit down and settle our account.”

At least during these splendid feast days of the year, let us sometimes turn and look at ourselves. Women have a good custom before the great feasts: they sweep, rearrange the furniture, whitewash, and make the house look new. They prepare the house for a guest, or for relatives and friends who have been away and are coming to visit...

Thank you. We are going to receive someone who will wish us a blessed feast. All that is good and holy. But will there be room for the great Guest, for Him who comes once a year, to be born? Will there be a place for Him to remain and bless the house? Will there be a lamb in the house? Will the Lamb of God be in the house? That is the question. Will there be material goods in the house? And will God, the One who gives those good things, be in the house? Because here, as you understand, while we have our health and everything else, all goes well. But let your temperature rise to 37.1 for two or three days, and everything stops. The dirty jokes stop, the crude stories stop, the humor stops, the laughter stops—everything stops. Why? Because you have a temperature of 37.1. “A slight fever,” they say, “only a slight fever.” Yet you cry, “Oh dear, things are bad! They cannot find what is wrong with me.”

So, if a person reflects seriously, I think he will begin to value things differently. Some people casually say, “Come on, here is Nicholas again with the same talk. There is nothing after this life.” Very well, I agree with you: suppose there is nothing. Is that what you say? Then am I harmed because I believe there is something, while you are the clever one? But I want to ask you this: if there is something, what will you do then? You keep telling me there is nothing. But even if there is only one chance in a billion that there is, tell me: what will you do? And if there is, what have I lost, or what have you gained? Tell me. What have I lost because I go to bed early, while you go to bed at two or three in the morning, returning from an illicit embrace, from the card table, or from the tavern? Is that your gain?

For me, going to bed early is a gain. But you who live unlawfully, you who kill your children—are you the one who gains, while I, who follow the way of God, suffer loss? Is your way clever and mine foolish? We are truly ridiculous, my dear ones. Forgive the way I speak to you, but I want us to understand all this. I am not going to give you an abstract theological discourse. I will tell you certain things from my experience of life and from my theological understanding. Take them, lay them before yourselves, and consider whether they are true and whether we need to be careful. Some of us blame various people outside ourselves—the Church, the state, foreign powers, or those at home. That is a grave mistake. Are other people not at fault? No. You and I are at fault. When we restore our own lives according to Christ,

things will change. Human life is not a matter of economics. A person’s life does not need dollars, bananas, or any number of other things. The individual, the family, and the state all need Christ. Christ is missing from our lives; that is why everything is tossed about by the wind, and why this volcano grows hotter every day and will soon erupt. It will erupt before long, and we will reap exactly what we have sown. You can see it all around you. Everything is burning. Wars have begun far away, and they will gather closer to us. They will reach us too.

Our Fathers have written about these things; our Saints have written about them; our prophets and our books have written about them. Will we wait for them to happen—and they are happening in our days—and only then run to ring the bell and offer the Paraklesis, the supplicatory canon, to the Most Holy Theotokos?

The Most Holy Theotokos will not listen. It would be better, when I am in danger and my house is burning, for the fire brigade not to hear me and for me to be consumed by the flames; it would be better, after an accident, for emergency services not to hear or answer me, than for the Most Holy Theotokos not to answer, or for Christ not to answer. For then He will say, “When I spoke to you, you closed your ears. Now that you need Me, now you call upon Me.” You know, during the occupation the churches were full. When the air-raid sirens stopped, attendance at the churches stopped as well. People roam through the fields after work and money, after fleshly pleasures, nights out, and all the rest. But how long will God be mocked? “How long shall I bear with you?” What did He say? “How long, O Lord?” I do not know whether you have the Old Testament in your homes.

Do you have it? Open the first chapter of Proverbs and read this passage. When a person cries out to God and God does not answer him, then he will understand what God means—but by then it will be too late. This is what will happen to us. I do not want what I am telling you to come to pass, but the direction we are taking and the way we continue will bring us there one day. Then we will understand what harm we have done to ourselves, but it will be too late. Naturalists say that the mole sees only once in its life, on the final day when it is about to die. Its eyes open, it sees the light and everything around it, but then it dies. This is what happens to many of us who have mocked God, His patient endurance, and His goodness, which

He gave us as an opportunity for metanoia—repentance—for returning to Him, for confession, for Holy Communion, and for worship in the Church. We used it in our own way and imagined that Christ would always come near us whenever we wished. But Christ does not come near us on those terms, for the Holy Fathers say, “Hearing in return for hearing.” Listen to Me, and I will listen to you. Acknowledge Me, and I will help you in your hour of need.

We read in the writings that, many years ago, during these very days, a great Father of nepsis—of spiritual watchfulness—went to Bethlehem, to the Cave where Christ was born. I do not know whether any of you have been blessed with the opportunity to go there.

He felt as though he had vanished from the face of the earth. He fell prostrate before the manger where Christ was born, which remains there to this day, and cried out: “My Christ, what can I give You? What can I offer You, my Christ, in return for what You have done for me? God became man so that I might once again become god by grace. What can I offer You?” And he wept with great sobs. It is said that a voice was then heard from that place, saying, “Hilarion”—for that was his name—“Hilarion, give Me your sins. I want nothing else.” And the man...

A person can offer many things to Christ—but his sins? He may bring a candle as tall as himself. He may bring oil to keep the vigil lamps burning. He may bring candles, icons, gold, and many other things. But a person does not give Christ his sins. If a spiritual man could stand at the door of a church and collect the sins of the so-called Christians who enter, light a candle, and receive the antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy—he could load the entire British fleet with them, beginning inside the altar and continuing all the way down to the candle counter. What, then, will Christ ask for? He came into the world for our sins. We give Him every kind of offering except our sins. And so I would like to say next that Christ does not accept such a compromise.

You may say, “I will bring a candle and light it.” But do not forget, human being, that Christ is not placed under any obligation to you. The candle is already His, poor soul. Therefore, you are only giving Him what belongs to Him. If you bring Him a container of oil so that His vigil lamps may burn, the olives are His. He planted the seeds, He watered the olive tree, and He commanded that wood—that soulless tree—to take in water and turn it into oil. Neither you nor I can do that. This offering does not move Him either. Will you build Him a church? The bricks are His, the cement is His, and the iron is His. You offer nothing; you have merely taken His materials and placed one on top of another. He is not moved by what is already His. He is moved by what is yours and mine.

Do you know what a human being produces? Nothing but sins—nothing else. Even those things we call the good works a person does belong to Christ; it is Christ who does those good things through the person. “Every good gift...” At the end, the priest comes out and says, “...is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” And Heaven is moved by nothing except the metanoia—the repentance—of a sinful person. If a person is unwilling to give up his sins, then nothing has been accomplished. The Gospel tells us that there is joy in Heaven

over one sinner who repents. The angel who guards each person rejoices, cries aloud, and raises the banner: “The soul entrusted to my care has repented!” There is a great celebration in Heaven when a person repents. These days through which we are now passing are especially meant to remind us of our sinfulness. They bring each person face-to-face with Christ. “Why, my Christ, do You come and allow Yourself to be born in a manger? Why do You humble Yourself so deeply? Why do You submit to such dishonor? Why did Christ come into the world? Was it to create holidays, as I said before? To give us an opportunity to play cards? To give us an opportunity to feast? Thank you. To give us extra wages?”

He came into the world to take away the sin of the world. That is why He is called “the One who takes up and bears away the sin of the world.” But if a person does not give Him that sin, if he does not cast it off and place its burden upon Christ, it will remain upon him. Christ will not take it against his will. You must cast it away, human being; you must give it to Him. You may not be able to follow me because, I fear, you do not read the Scriptures. Let me tell you an event from the Prophet Jonah. Jonah disobeyed and boarded a boat to flee from the face of God, because God was sending him to one place, while he chose to go somewhere else. During the voyage a violent storm arose, and the boat could make no progress. The wind was blowing directly against it. Jonah told those aboard, “I am the one at fault.”

“Take me and throw me into the sea, if you do not want to drown as well. Take me and throw me into the sea, if you do not want to drown as well.” And the captain said, “Are we to throw you in ourselves and carry your death upon our conscience?” “You must throw me in,” Jonah replied. Jonah is an image of sin. But will I cast it away? Sin does not fall away by itself. So they threw him into the sea, and the sea became calm. How much of Jonah, then, is present within each of us? Whether it is lying, fraud, theft, the killing of children, blasphemy, or any other sin, Jonah remains within us and will not come out so that we may cast him into the open sea. And do you know what that open sea is? It is the mercy of God. The sea is the mercy of God.

When we throw burning coals into the sea, the sea extinguishes them. The sea does not go to the coals; you must throw the coals into the sea if you want them extinguished. It is the same with human sins, if a person wants them wiped away. People prepare themselves outwardly. They order new suits and go who knows where to have clothes made, so that they will have something new to wear for the coming feast. The approaching holidays stir them. Inwardly, however, they make no preparation at all. They make no preparation for the soul. “We have no spiritual father,” they say. We have no doctor nearby either, yet I heard of someone who sold his goat and went all the way to Paris. You may have no doctor nearby, but if you become physically ill, you travel here and there—to Trikala, Athens, or Thessaloniki. Yet now that you are spiritually ill, no way can be found.

Even though confessors come to the provinces and villages and travel from place to place, we are ashamed. Instead of being ashamed when we sin, we are ashamed when the time comes for us to be healed. These are the most festive days of all, so I take this opportunity to tell you, among other things: pay attention to this matter. The goodness and loving-kindness of God have a limit. The cup does not overflow; if it did, we would be gone. Each of us is like a cup beneath Him, and God lets fall one drop every million years. Do you know how full the cup of God’s forbearance is for you and me? Do you know whether this is the final drop? What happens after that? For now, He bears with us.

He does not cut out our tongue when we blaspheme Him or tell lies. He does not cut off our hands when we steal or dishonor others. He does not strike us down in the very act of sin—in fornication, adultery, and corruption. He does not cut off the hands of the mother who cold-bloodedly kills her child. Nor does He slam the refrigerator shut and cut off our hands when we reach inside to break the fast on Wednesdays, Fridays, and the other fasting days. Does God not exist? Is He unable to act? He both exists and is able, but He is longsuffering and desires our salvation. Yet how long will God wait for us, His pampered children, to change our lives for our own good? God does not need us. Does He not have angels and archangels? What need does He have of us? Does He need our vote in order to be elected? The truth is, my dear friends, that we do not want God. We may make the sign of the Cross a little, but whoever loves God will listen to God and will love his neighbor.

Suppose I say, ‘My sons love me; my children love me.’ Do they obey what I tell them? No. Then how can we claim to love God? ‘I love you, Father, but I do not listen to you. Mother dear, I love you, but I do not listen to you. I love you when you cook for me, wash my clothes, make me suits, and give me spending money—but I do not listen to you.’ What kind of love is that? What sort of love is it? It is distorted, self-serving love. Do young people today want God? Do they seek Him? Do young women today want God? Do they seek Him? Do they seek the Most Holy Theotokos because they desire virginity? Is that why they seek her? Do they seek Christ because they desire chastity? They act dishonorably, and today they also enter Holy Matrimony dishonorably. Otherwise, one could not even say, ‘You have crowned them with glory and honor.’ Why do you place wedding crowns upon a man who has been everywhere and done everything? Why crown a woman who has spent years roaming through the mire? Why give her a crown? If God...

...acted at every moment according to His justice, woe to us. No one could stand—no one. But He is longsuffering and waits for each person’s metanoia, his repentance. So we do not truly want Christ. Are there copies of the Gospel in our homes? Why should there not be? How many copies of Domino, Thesauros, Casanova, and so many other publications are there? Why should there not be a Gospel in the home today? Are there no editions with explanations? Of course there are. You pay thirty, twenty, forty, or fifty drachmas for all those other things every week. Yet you need to buy the Gospel only once in your whole life. It is for you, your children, your grandchildren, and your great-grandchildren; it does not change. What wise people are these who speak such nonsense and foolishness? The Gospel is not a science in which one person replaces another and one method comes along to erase the one before it. It is not.

As long as heaven stands, this book will continue to speak. As long as the world exists, this book will exist. Yet people will not take it up; and even if someone buys it, the great teacher of evil, Satan, forbids him to open it. He may occasionally open it for some reason, but then he leaves it lying there. Many who have this book—the New Testament, the Gospel—in their home would have to ask several people where it is if you requested it, and even then we do not know whether they would find it. On the bedside table, the display shelf, and the bookcase, every book of worldly knowledge is prominently displayed except the Gospel. Christ alone is kept out of sight. Satan forbids it, and man does not want to come to God. So we do not want Christ. Once, while speaking here, I told you an old story about a prostitute. Perhaps you have heard it. There was a corrupt woman...

Among the many corrupt women known to young people and to others who read such things, there was one named Lais, a deeply immoral woman. In her day, it is said, a kind of looking glass—a mirror—was invented. Today mirrors cost next to nothing; we have two mounted on our cars so that we can see behind us. But in those days, owning a mirror was a great thing. It cost an astronomical sum; you had to pay a great deal even for a little mirror. This corrupt woman, who earned her money by dishonorable means, paid whatever they asked and bought it. Everyone now considered her fortunate because she possessed a mirror. But the next day, Lais broke it.

Did she drop it by accident? No. She laid it on the ground, took a stone, and smashed it into a million pieces. People saw her destroy this precious, extremely expensive object with such fury and thought the woman had lost her mind. They tried to discover why she had broken the mirror. Do you know why? Because the mirror had dared to show her that wrinkles were beginning to furrow her face. It showed her that she was growing old, something she had not realized. This is what Christ does. This is what the Most Holy Theotokos does. This is what the Gospel, the Church, and our Lord do: they show us the wrinkles upon our soul, and we do not want to see them.

‘Do not tell me that.’ This is fashionable today: whenever you tell someone the truth, he says, ‘Do not tell me that.’ He does not want to hear it; he wants you to tell him lies. This is why man does not come into the light, does not take the Gospel into his hands, and does not want to hear a sermon or listen to a recorded talk. Satan makes sure all this is lulled to sleep. A person can find time and money for everything else, but not for these things. Why? So that no one will remind him of the wrinkles upon his soul, for then his conscience will begin reproving him from within. In His goodness, God has placed within every person a policeman called conscience, who constantly cries out, ‘No—look, what you are doing is not right.’ Of course, we give it a slap and say, ‘Sit down! Other people do it too. That person does it as well. Is everyone who does it going to Hell?’ And so the conscience withdraws. Then, another time...

...when you do something else, it comes forward again. It brings a blush of shame to your face. You give it another slap: ‘Sit down!’ This is why, in many people today, the conscience no longer works. This consulate of God, placed within every person to remind him and say, ‘What you are doing is not good,’ is no longer operating. Woe to the person who has deadened his conscience, whose conscience no longer acts and no longer reproves him. What do we call such a person? Unconscionable. ‘He is unconscionable,’ we say. What does that mean? It means that his conscience is not functioning. It is not that he has no conscience; he has one, but it does not function. For example, I am diabetic. What is not functioning within me? My pancreas.

The pancreas. I have a pancreas, but it does not function. It does not secrete insulin, and so I am diabetic. I have a pancreas, but it does not work. In exactly the same way, many of us have a conscience, but it does not function. In the old days, we would cover the evening coals with ashes so that in the morning we could find one coal underneath, blow on it, and light the fire again, saving ourselves a match. That is what people’s conscience is like. A great deal of filth has accumulated over it, and now it lies buried underneath. That person must repent, go to confession, and remove all that filth so that the little coal beneath it can emerge and burn again.

A man owned a country taverna. At around three in the morning, after the last groups had left, he closed up and went to bed. But he had a dog that kept barking—howling, as we say—and would not let him sleep. He went out onto his veranda, motioned to the dog, and the dog quieted down. He returned to bed. Then the dog began again, barking first here and then there. The man came out once more. ‘Shut up!’ he said. ‘Shut up!’ But the dog started barking again. So the man went downstairs, brought out his double-barreled shotgun, fired at the dog, and killed it. Once the dog was dead, the barking stopped, and the man went back to bed and fell asleep.

‘I am tired, and that dog will not let me sleep,’ he had thought. In the morning he went downstairs and found that thieves had broken into his business and taken everything. The dog had seen strangers moving about below and had barked to warn him. Instead of asking, ‘Why is the dog barking? Why is it crying out? Could it be guarding me right now?’ the man killed it. This is what happens to some people. God has placed this guardian within us. That is why, when they finally repent, they cannot be at peace: ‘Why did I do that?’ The inner reproof begins, acting as both accuser and judge within us. It is something Christ, in His love, has placed in every person. It has a red light and a green light. When the red light comes on and tells you, ‘This is not right,’ your conscience is reproving you. Do not search for worldly, carnal, egotistical...

...or self-serving excuses in order to escape. Pay attention to what your conscience tells you, because it is what will protect you from even greater destruction. I do not know which of you have prepared yourselves to meet these Holy Days. I repeat: Christ needs neither our greetings nor our gifts. We need Him. Does the sun need man, or does man need the sun? Does shade need man, or does man need shade? Never go outside—stay indoors and breed cockroaches if you wish. The sun will continue on its course. Do I not need to go outside and receive all the life-giving power within it? In the same way, I need Christ. I need to go to Him so that He may shelter me.

Satan wants Christ to be served with an eviction notice. If we gain every good thing in the world but do not receive Christ, we have gained nothing. That is the truth. We may have nothing. The day after tomorrow, we may have only cabbage on our table and go to Christ’s Church wearing torn trousers and shoes full of holes. But if we go having repented and confessed, receive Holy Communion, and Christ comes and is born in our...

...own manger, within the soul, as John Chrysostom says, then we have truly celebrated Christmas. My dear friends, we must change our lives. Let me give you a word from Holy Scripture. The Apostle Paul says, ‘Do you not know that the goodness of God leads you to metanoia, to repentance?’ This goodness and longsuffering of God—His waiting for you even though you sin—does it not exist? He is helping you to repent and giving you time to do so. Why do you not repent? Does it cost money to go to confession? Do you need to hire a lawyer? Do you need a notary? What do you need? What do you need? Gather up your sins and hand them over. What use are your sins to you? Why do you hold on to them? Will you never sin again? How could that be? Very well, you sinned again. Will you never fall again? You may fall again.

Get up! Why do you not rise again? To fall is human; to remain fallen is satanic, says John Chrysostom. Think about that. We ask some people, ‘How are you? How are things?’ They usually answer, ‘Good, glory to You, O God.’ That is the usual response: ‘Good, glory to You, O God.’ Can you tell me why you are glorifying God? What is this good state you speak of? Is it that your children have jobs and have bought a private car and some new appliance? Is it because they have savings or because you own a television? What does it mean for things to be good? Do you attend Church? Do you go to confession? Do your children receive Holy Communion and attend Church? Do they remain chaste until Holy Matrimony? Do those who are married accept the blessing of children? What do you mean when you say, ‘Glory to You, O God’? Why are you glorifying God? Because He still bears with you while you continue doing the same things? That is mistaken.

That is the failure.

In homes where the people cannot present themselves or one another before God as God desires, there ought to be one flag at half-mast outside for every person living within. Flags at half-mast. Here there is mourning. Here is a woman who is alive yet dead. Here is a prodigal daughter. That is the honest answer. If we want to speak the truth, let us not speak vaguely. I have two sacks: one contains lies and the other contains truth. You may say that I take things out of both sacks, and that is why my words will make you bitter. What daughter listens to her mother when her mother tells her the truth? She listens to the neighbor, but not to her mother. What son listens to his father when his father tells him the truth? He listens to someone outside the family. You do not say this. The girl’s first enemy becomes her mother, and the boy’s first enemy becomes his father, because they tell their children the truth. Man does not want the truth. Just as a child does not want to hear the truth from his father and mother...

...we do not want to hear the truth from our own Father either.

Thank you. You know, there are two commandments. Sometimes people say, ‘What kind of children are these today? Do our children listen to us? We used to listen to our fathers. When we approached the coffeehouse, if our father merely made a sign, we did as he indicated. Why do our children behave as they do now? What has happened?’ Could it be what I mentioned earlier, what the Fathers call ‘hearing in return for hearing’? You want your children to listen to you. It is a beautiful thing for children to listen to their father and mother. But do you listen to your own Father and your own Mother? You demand that they respect you, but do you respect your own Father, God? Do you respect the Most Holy Theotokos? You see, we...

We ask our children for obedience, respect, and so forth. That is beautiful; that is good. But if we do not respect our own Father and Mother, will our children respect us afterward? During these days, parents are concerned with providing their children with everything they can: new clothes, good food, warmth—everything. Like birds, they hurry about caring for them. But what about their souls? What about their souls? What are these bodies? They are flesh, destined only for the worms; they are not spirit, they are not the soul. What preparation are they making for their children’s souls? Will they see that they go to Confession? Or are they not soiled? Are they spotless? Are they angels? Just a moment. We have brought the demon-box into the house, and they are being defiled right there in the home, because we have brought the devil into it. Is it possible for them to remain pure? How could they be pure?

They need these things. What have you done? How will you present yourself during these days before Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos? How will we present ourselves? These are thoughts we must consider during these days. My beloved, do not listen to what the world says. Pray, and let those people turn back if they wish. Do not listen to what the heretics say. Do not listen to every irresponsible person. These are eternal things. They are eternal things; they do not change. Those people will pass away, but these truths will remain. The Church of Christ will remain—not merely as stones, but as spirit. And just as Noah was there in that Ark, while wild beasts, cattle, other creatures, birds, and one family of eight entered it and were fed within it,

so those who enter here, into this Church, where Noah—the priest—is present and provides everything a human being needs within, will also be saved. Will they not be saved? But let us take care, especially those of us who are eager to support good works. Such people help greatly; they perform many good works both for the Church and for society, yet they are more easily led astray. Satan takes hold of them and says: “You do not need the Church. Do not listen to the priests; they are sinful men. Where did a priest get the right to forgive you? What does ‘the Body and Blood of Christ’ mean? It is only bread and wine. These things are nothing.” You hear such propaganda from outside. Yet it is not so. The person who desires to live that life fully will remain within this Church, and one day this Church will come to rest upon Ararat. It will not be submerged.

As I say, such people may be very good and may do many good things, but they remain merely good people. All the good people are in Hell. Someone may ask, “Then who is in Paradise—the bad people?” The Christians are. Being a Christian is one thing; being a good person is another. Many very good people are not Christians at all. They have no relationship whatsoever with Christ, with the Church, or with the Mysteries, and yet they are good people. They are like people who prepare suitcases and luggage and label everything, but have not bought a ticket for the journey. Have you ever heard of anyone traveling simply because he has luggage, but without a ticket? Yet someone with a ticket and no luggage can travel—as the Pharisee did. Forgive me, I mean the Publican; and as the thief did.

He had no luggage, yet he entered; just as the prodigal son made the journey. He had no luggage. The elder son had luggage, yet remained outside. Strange things indeed. It is Christ—it is the Orthodox Church—that gives this ticket to every person. So take care: what became of the craftsmen who built the Ark? Did they not all perish? Because of their pride, they did not enter it. “He is mad! What is he building here on dry land?” In the same way, those who remain outside consider people who go to Church mad. Even those craftsmen who built the Ark—I repeat—were not saved, while animals, wild beasts, and cattle were saved. I say this for those who perform good works,

who often give donations so that icons, iconostases, and other things may be made. These are good and holy offerings. But you must enter as well—enter inside. Repent and go to Confession. Receive the Body and Blood of Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Obtain your ticket from within. Make peace with Christ before the Beautiful Gate, and be sealed with the Precious Cross of the Christians, so that one day your soul may pass through the beautiful gate. These are the things I wanted to tell you on this first occasion when we have met. Keep whatever you think is worthwhile; and if you think I have said nothing of value, cast it all away and devote yourselves to whatever God may illumine you to hear.

Μια Κυριακή στην Εκκλησία και κοίταξε πόσοι θα μπουν, πότε θα μπουν, πώς θα μπουν, πώς θα σταθούν, αν είναι μέχρι το τέλος και τι θα κάνουν στην Εκκλησία που ήρθαν. Θα δεις, λοιπόν, είναι χίλιες ψυχές, θα έρθουν οι 80, οι 100, οι 150· οι 850 είναι έξω. Δεν αναγνωρίζουν ψυχή, δεν την έχουν ανάγκη την Εκκλησία, δεν λογαριάζουν για τίποτα. Ούτε ο γονιός στενοχωρείται διότι το παιδί, η σύζυγος, ξέρω εγώ, δεν θα πάει στην Εκκλησία. Ή, αν πάει, δεν θα έχει τα αγαθά αποτελέσματα από την Εκκλησία, διότι πάει απροετοίμαστη στην Εκκλησία. Τότε πού είναι η λογική; Πού είναι η μόρφωση; Πού είναι η αναγνώριση ότι υπάρχει ψυχή; Ποιος πιστεύει ότι θα πεθάνουμε και θα δώσουμε λόγο, θα μας πάνε εκεί που δεν θέλουμε, είτε το θέλουμε είτε όχι;

Αγαπητοί μου, μέσα σε αυτόν τον αιώνα που τόσο η γνώση προχώρησε, οι άνθρωποι προσεληνώθησαν, δεν προσγειώθηκαν. Κι ο άνθρωπος, όταν δεν προσγειωθεί να ακούσει το «ουαί» και ισχύει να πεθάνει, καλύτερα να μην είχε γεννηθεί. Τόσο σοβαρό θέμα είναι. Όταν ο Χριστός μας ευρέθηκε μπροστά στην αποτυχία του Ιούδα, είπε: «Καλύτερα να μην είχε γεννηθεί». Να γεννηθεί άνθρωπος είναι μεγάλο πράγμα. Δεν γεννιέται κάποιο φυτό, κάποιο ζώο, ούτε γίνεται κάποιο μέγαρο. Ο άνθρωπος, που ο άνθρωπός σου θα συλληφθεί στην κοιλιά της μητέρας του, δεν πεθαίνει ποτέ η ψυχούλα εκεί. Θα την πετάξει η μάνα στον τενεκέ; Δεν πεθαίνει, θα υπάρχει στην αιωνιότητα. Καταλαβαίνετε τι πάει να πει άνθρωπος;

Βρισκόμαστε μπροστά σε μεγάλα γεγονότα εκκλησιαστικά, μπροστά στις ημέρες των Χριστουγέννων. Έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ κανένα; Και αν δεν ήξερε, να ρωτήσει κάποιον που ξέρει τι είναι αυτές οι ημέρες. Είναι μια ευκαιρία να έρθουν τα παιδιά από την Αθήνα ή οι συγγενείς μας, για να κάνουμε ένα ωραίο τραπέζι και να ιδωθούμε και να ξαναφύγουνε; Αυτό είναι; Είναι μια ευκαιρία να πάρουν οι υπάλληλοι και οι συνταξιούχοι τον 13ο μισθό; Είναι μια ευκαιρία να φάμε μια γαλοπούλα, να φάμε μερικούς κουραμπιέδες ή ξέρω εγώ τι άλλο παρουσιάζουν οι μέρες; Τι είναι; Είναι υλικά τα Χριστούγεννα ή πνευματικά;

και τους μισθούς και τα δώρα και τις χαρές και τα τραπέζια και... Αλλά αυτόν που είναι η αιτία δεν θέλουμε να τον ακούμε και τον βλαστημούν από πάνω, και την Παναγία Μητέρα του και τους Αγίους του και τον Κλήρο του και τις Εκκλησίες και λοιπά. Και ποιο είναι το μεγάλο θαύμα; Ότι εξακολουθεί να μας ανέχεται, μας δίνει υγεία, μας δίνει ήλιο, μας δίνει αέρα. Μας δίδει. Ή πιστεύει κανείς ότι είναι δικά του; Τους τα έφερε η μάνα του ή τα έφερε αυτός; Ποιος έφερε τίποτα ή ποιος θα πάρει τίποτα από όλο που θα φύγει; Όλα είναι Αυτού. Αυτός όμως απορρίπτεται. Αυτός ο πανταχού παρών Θεός είναι πανταχού απών σήμερα. Ψάξτε στις καρδιές σας να δείτε. Θα βρείτε Θεό; Θα βρείτε Χριστό, για να εορτάσουμε Χριστούγεννα; Θα τα βρούμε; Δεν θα τα βρούμε;

Λοιπόν, αν φιλοσοφήσει ο άνθρωπος, νομίζω ότι κάπως αλλιώς πρέπει να τα εκτιμάει τα πράγματα. Λένε ορισμένοι εύκολα: «Άντε, ρε, έλα, ο Νικόλας εδώ και πάλι, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα». Συμφωνώ μαζί σου, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα. Έτσι; Και με βλάπτω εγώ που πιστεύω ότι υπάρχει, κι εσύ είσαι έξυπνος; Αλλά θέλω να σου θέσω το ερώτημα: αν υπάρχει, τι ώρα κάνεις; Θα σου λέω, δεν υπάρχει. Ένα τοις δισεκατομμυρίοις αν υπάρχει, πες μου τι ώρα κάνεις. Και εάν υπάρχει, τι έχασα εγώ ή εσύ τι κέρδισες; Πες μου. Τι έχασα εγώ, διότι εγώ κοιμάμαι νωρίς και εσύ κοιμάσαι στις δύο-τρεις η ώρα; Ή έρχεσαι από την αγκαλιά ή έρχεσαι από το χαρτί ή έρχεσαι από την ταβέρνα. Αυτό είναι κέρδος το δικό σου, ε;

ζητάμε από τα παιδιά μας υπακοή, σεβασμό κλπ. Όμορφο είναι αυτό, καλό είναι αυτό. Αν πραγματικώς, όταν εμείς δεν σεβαστούμε τους δικούς μας, κάποιοι θα σεβαστούν τους άλλους; Εμάς; Εμείς μετά, τα παιδιά τους. Ενδιαφέρονται οι γονείς αυτές τις ημέρες με ό,τι μπορέσουν τα παιδιά τους να είναι σερβιρισμένα με τα καινούργια τους, με το καλό τους φαγητό, με τη ζεστασιά τους, τα πάντα. Σαν τα πουλιά τρέχουν να τα περιποιηθούν. Για την ψυχή τους όμως, για την ψυχή τους; Τι είναι αυτά; Σάρκα είναι, για σκουλήκια μόνο, δεν είναι πνεύμα, δεν είναι ψυχή. Τι ετοιμασία κάνουν για την ψυχή; Θα ενδιαφερθούν να τα εξομολογήσουν; Ή δεν είναι λερωμένα; Είναι αλέρωτα; Άγγελοι είναι; Ναι, μισό. Έχουμε πάει το δαιμονοκούτι μέσα στο σπίτι και βρωμιώνται μέσα στο σπίτι, που το έχουμε πάει το διάολο τώρα. Είναι δυνατό να είναι καθαρά; Πώς θα είναι καθαρά;
