Summary

Christ came to seek and save the lost, but salvation requires each person’s willing cooperation with divine mercy. Receiving Communion must become genuine communion with Christ, expressed by abandoning passions, egotism, anger, and resentment and becoming a new person. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos and the Holy Unmercenaries, believers are urged to remain close to Christ, who alone is Savior, Way, and Life.

“The Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” This was the essence of today’s Gospel teaching, taken together with the epistle reading.

The Son of Man came, and that which was lost was saved. This is the matter that should concern every human being. Christ desires the salvation of man. Yet unless man also takes part and cooperates in his own salvation,

his salvation cannot be accomplished. On that day, we will not blame God. We will blame ourselves, because we were unwilling to follow the remedy He offered us. There is another verse heard in our Church, especially at Vespers: “Your mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life.” These are the words of David. For a shepherd to find a lost sheep, it is not enough that he himself desires it. It is not enough for him to humble himself, to tear his clothes and flesh among the ravines, and even to shed blood in order to find the sheep that was lost. The sheep must also desire to be found. Imagine a sheep that has wandered away from the fold. It goes somewhere, eats, lies down, and falls asleep. However much the shepherd calls out and grieves—because he knows that away from the fold this sheep is in danger—the sheep has eaten and is now lying somewhere, but when night comes, the wolf will devour it. However much the shepherd may desire to save it, unless the sheep also begins to draw near, seeking both the fold and the way back, it will remain there and be torn to pieces.

This material example illustrates the spiritual reality. A Father of the Church says, “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” The One who made you without first asking you cannot save you without your consent. Do we desire our salvation? The superficial answer is yes. But what are we doing for our salvation? What should we do? What did Christ tell us to do? Did He not leave us here a way by which we may find Him one day? Did He not leave us the whole pattern of His life?

We must walk that path and live that life if we are to find Him one day. What, then? The Apostle Peter says, “Leaving us an example, that we should follow in His footsteps.” He left us, that is, the whole pattern of His life and His teaching, so that we might place our feet in His steps and journey onward. But it is difficult, you may say. If you step where Christ stepped, it is not difficult. It becomes difficult when you try to follow a path of your own. I remember once reading a story about a king who took his young heir for a walk in the forest. Without realizing it, they wandered far away. It was winter, and the weather suddenly turned bad and snow began to fall. The king realized that they were becoming lost.

He said to the boy, “Come close. We must reach the village in time”—not return the way they had come, but make it into the village. The little boy could not keep walking. The king saw him struggling through the snow and felt compassion for him. Realizing that the child would be left behind, he said, “Listen: place your feet where mine have been, in the footprints I have made,” so that the boy would not have to break a new path through the snow and exhaust himself. In this way, by following the steps and the footprints already made by his father, the boy managed to keep going, and they were not devoured by wild beasts that night. We do not follow the way of Christ because the way of Christ does not agree with our ego,

with our carnal and worldly way of thinking. That is precisely why we take our own path, and the wolf devours us. This is the issue. Above all, our Christ taught these things by His life here in these holy places, where we, though unworthy, are walking during these days. Disregarding everything else and laboring each day, He taught people and reminded them that they must come to know Him—not theoretically, but in practice. They must live His life. Anyone who desires to live as a continuation of the life of Christ, so that he need not be afraid and may have at least some grounds for hoping that he will meet Him one day, where He has gone “as a forerunner on our behalf,” as Paul says, must live the life of the Orthodox Church. I have watched with joy during these days

many among us who may have lived the Christian life imperfectly back home. Here we have taken care to live it somewhat more properly and consistently. Those who had not confessed went to confession. Those whose confession had been careless took greater care. Those who had not been receiving Holy Communion received it, and others received it far more often than they normally do back home. Yet I would like to ask one thing: all of us who received Holy Communion—did we truly enter into communion with Christ? That is the question. Simply receiving Holy Communion is easy. But did I commune with Christ? Did I consider giving up anything of my passions, my egotism, or my carnal desires? Did I consider changing direction and becoming a new person? If I had been walking eastward, was I ready

to turn and walk completely westward? If I had been walking northward, was I ready to turn and walk completely southward? For I live an amphibious life, now in the water and now on the land. That is not Christianity. Christ wants those who are truly His own. My dear ones, we do not want Christ in practice; we want Him only in words. Dear little Christ is good because He promises us Paradise; dear little Christ is sweet. Yet we are unwilling to change our lives so that Christ may testify and declare, “Yes, this man is My brother.” For we must become like Him. But when we bristle, as the saying goes, like furnaces blazing with resentment, and when we often spring like lions—if at certain moments someone could photograph us in our anger, for example—

we would be ashamed of ourselves. Can the grace of the Holy Spirit remain with us? Can we play games with grace and say, “You may leave now, because I am going to do as I please; afterward I will call You back, and You will be obliged to return”? There are certain things that can bring a person back to his proper place, if he is willing. Yet our salvation depends upon us. Christ has provided everything and made all things ready. Once, when Christ was speaking there in Tiberias, they asked Him, “What must we do?” They said, “Lord, what works must we perform?” Leave aside the plural; let us speak in the singular. The work is to believe in Jesus. Believe, He says, in God and in the One whom He sent. That is it. From the moment a Christian believes in Christ, he must listen to what Christ says: “He who loves Me keeps My law. He who loves Me keeps My commandments.”

Apart from the commandments of Christ, no one can say that he is a Christian. He may be a good person, but he cannot be a Christian. The Kingdom of Heaven is not for such merely good people. All the merely good people are in Hell; Christians are not in Hell. This is what should concern us. Especially here, where we have come—to the place of renewal, the place of Jesus’ suffering, the place of the Crucifixion, the place of the Resurrection, the place that is the fountain of light—we must by all means receive something. We must leave this place with the firm resolve to become disciples of Christ, followers of Christ, and sheep saved by Christ, because He is the Shepherd, and we must truly live in Him. Thank you. Therefore, I pray to the holy God, through the intercessions of the Most Pure Mother and of the Holy Unmercenaries, whose feast we celebrate today, on this

first day of the month, that we may depart as new people and ask ourselves, “Are we truly saved beneath the mighty hand of the Lord?” If we are, let us remain there; if we are not, let us cling to Him. For He is our Savior; He is the Way; He is the Life; He is everything. Apart from Him, there is nothing. Amen.

Έτσι είναι αυτό το υλικό παράδειγμα, γύρω από το πνευματικό παράδειγμα. Ένας πατήρ της Εκκλησίας λέγει: «Ο άνευ σου πλάσας σε, ου δύναται άνευ σου σώσαι σε». Αυτός που σε έφτιαξε χωρίς να σε ρωτήσει, δεν μπορεί να σε σώσει χωρίς να σε ρωτήσει. Θέλουμε εμείς τη σωτηρία μας; Η επιπόλαια απάντηση είναι ναι. Και τι κάνουμε για τη σωτηρία μας; Τι να κάνουμε; Τι είπε ο Χριστός να κάνουμε; Δεν έχει αφήσει τρόπους εδώ ώστε να τον βρούμε μίαν ημέρα; Δεν άφησε μια ζωή ολόκληρη εδώ;
