Summary
The lecture traces Christ’s removal from Golgotha by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, His burial, and the enduring witness of the empty tomb. The Holy Fire, received by the Orthodox Patriarch and shared with other Christian communities, is described as a continuing sign of divine providence and the Resurrection. The tour connects the sacred sites of the Holy Sepulchre with Constantine and Helen, Christ’s Passion, the Theotokos, and the historical worship of Jerusalem’s Christian communities.

This is the place where, from up there on Golgotha, where our Christ was crucified, Nicodemus and Joseph took Him down from the Cross and cared for His body. From here they carried Him and buried Him in the empty tomb—a tomb in which no one had ever been laid, as the Gospel reading told us. If you look at the proportions and the distances, you will see that what Holy Scripture records is true. Even if the Scriptures were ever lost, from these places and their proportions we could compose the Gospel anew. And from here, as you can see, comes the fragrance that remains to this day.
What I want you to notice from the outset is the fragrance of Jesus. Wherever He passed, I want to believe that it fills us all, some more and some less—with wonder, a trembling of awe, a sacred thought. I am grateful that we are here at this moment. We are counted worthy to walk upon and behold things that people longed for thousands of years before Christ to see. Once again, and for some of us for the first time, the mercy of God counts us worthy to venerate the things into which angels themselves would have desired to look—not to venerate them, but to behold them. We are here at the center of the earth, where, as the Prophet says, God wrought the salvation of man. We stand before the tomb of the one true God, the Son of the living God, our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a unique and unrepeatable truth, and wherever we may go, we must all become heralds of what we have been counted worthy to see and hear. Here, faith, confession, and doctrine all come together—I do not know how you prefer to understand it. Here is the Most Holy Sepulchre of the Lord, where He who became man condescended, as man, to die, to be buried, and to rise again. Its distinctive feature—
—is that this is the center where all the worlds meet: unbelievers, Catholics here, Armenians here, Assyrians here—everyone. Yet the empty tomb of our Lord reveals one fundamental truth: where the true faith is and where the way of salvation is found. All the so-called founders of religions, and all those who claim to be leaders and chief authorities who bring salvation to man—whether they are called Muhammad, Buddha, Zoroaster, Pope, Calvin, or Russell—differ from the true Leader, our Lord Jesus Christ. The tombs of all these men are full; their remains lie bound in their burial shrouds. This tomb alone is different. We have one Leader.
His tomb is empty, and He promises those who believe that one day they too will leave the tomb. The Resurrection of our Christ extends to our own resurrection and guarantees that one day we shall rise. Here all nations are forever called to receive the light. Outside Jesus there is no light. Look at this Holy Edicule. You will see two openings on the right and two on the left. Through them, the Orthodox Patriarch alone, having received the light of the Resurrection over the Holy Stone of the Most Holy Sepulchre, gives it to the others—to the Assyrians, the Armenians, and the Copts. They receive the light there from us, yet they remain in their own faith. That is their error. That bears witness against them.
They ought to see that, if they believe Christ to be God, Leader, and Savior, this is precisely what He declares and enables His people to understand—with their eyes, their hearing, their sense of smell, and all their senses—that the one true faith is indeed here. Believing in some vague Christ is nothing; believing in some vague God is nothing, unless you believe in Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified One of whom the angel spoke. Here in this antechamber there is still a piece of marble from the slab that covered our Christ. When the Myrrh-bearing Women came on Sunday morning to anoint our Christ, an angel of the Lord rolled it away here—not so that Christ could rise, as some say, for our Christ had risen during the night, but so that it might be revealed that He had risen.
The angel announces that He has risen: “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here; He is risen. Go to Galilee to meet Him, as He told you.” These things must be imprinted upon us. They still remain. And how do they remain? Miraculously. If you realize that we are only one percent among the Arabs, the Jews, and so forth, how are the few of us preserved here? How have all these holy places been preserved? It is a miracle of God alone. Yet even the few who believe do not fully comprehend it. Most of us who are here at this moment do believe, but we believe in our own way. We believe with our lips, just as He Himself declared and preached. Therefore, let each of you say inwardly, even if you cannot say it aloud: “I thank You, my God, for what You have granted me, for counting me worthy, for condescending to me, a sinner—
—to see, to hear, to taste, and so forth. Give me the strength to preserve this within me and to carry it to others who wished to come but could not, and also to those who are indifferent.” Directly opposite us is the Katholikon, where they are celebrating inside. When we say “Katholikon,” we mean the principal cathedral church of our holy site. Many communities have a foothold in this place. Directly behind the Holy Edicule you will see that the Armenians have also set up a little corner, while the Copts sought to obtain rights from us. Why do you not come inside, gentlemen, and receive the light from here? At the entrance through which we came, three columns to the left, one is split deeply through its center. The light came forth from there in 1574, when the Armenians had paid the Muslims to lock our Patriarch outside so that they themselves might receive the light.
They imagined that the light could be bought, that it was merely human, and that they could coerce God. But because God did not give it to them, the column over there split open and the light came forth from it; the mark remains to this day. And all the Orthodox who passed by and venerated there perceived a fragrance amid the sunlight, the dust, and the air. “If you remain silent, the stones will cry out.” The very stones will proclaim that there is one true God. As Peter said the other day—do you not remember? I do not know whether you remember—“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”: not of some god, but of the living God. This tomb, then, bears witness to Him; this place bears witness to Him; the Church bears witness to Him. I pray that His grace and forbearance may enter our souls, move our hearts, and give us eyes fit to see where we are and what this means for us.
One of the first gifts of the risen Jesus, we might say, is joy. When Jesus rose, He gave joy to the world. Before He was crucified, He had told His disciples: “For a little while I shall be absent, and you will sorrow. But you will see Me again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” Indeed, “the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.” Everyone present was filled with this joy. From that morning, when Mary Magdalene first brought the news to Peter and John and then to the others, and they came here and confirmed the Resurrection, the disciples became intoxicated with joy. Filled with fervor, they became like lions, hastening throughout the world to proclaim this resurrectional glory and joy. But the joy of the Resurrection is not only for the disciples. It is the privilege of every believer who participates in it, who truly lives it, and who does not live halfheartedly. Naturally, resurrectional joy leaves no room—
—for living in despair. Tribulations, yes; despair, no. Our very being must have a foretaste of eternity. We ourselves, then, must become people of the Resurrection. Our life must be a life of the Lord’s Day, a resurrectional life. Faith in the Resurrection is very demanding. If you believe in the Resurrection, your life is obliged to become resurrectional. It leaves no room for compromise. Unfortunately, we want to reconcile the one thing—
—with the other. I still do not know whether we have realized where we truly are. The more deeply we realize it, the more our whole being should pour itself outward. We should shed tears of gratitude to God for all that He has done and for counting us worthy to set foot in these holy places. This is not accidental; it is a blessing, it is grace. What can we say? How many people long to come but cannot! They ask us, “Why were you able to go?” We must not let this pass unnoticed. We must return to our homeland transformed into people of the Resurrection. Woe to us if we return home still carrying our passions. Woe to us. You know, if we follow these things here through the Scriptures, they speak for themselves and proclaim that Christ truly rose. Please follow the videos carefully, and do not forget this as you watch the videos that follow.
Indeed, sound and simple reasoning reveals to anyone of good will—anyone who is neither stubborn nor prejudiced—that God truly rose. There are so many details, including the providential arrangement of the church, which help even the weakest person accept that Christ truly lived, died, and rose here: the manner of His death, His removal from the Cross, and His burial by Nicodemus and Joseph. Their tombs are here behind us; as we proceed, we can go and see the tombs of these two men. Joseph in particular dared to undertake this deed. What great boldness! Everything here bears witness to it. Joseph had a great heart to go to Pilate and ask for the body of Christ.
These men wrapped the dead body of Christ in burial cloths, expecting it to remain in the tomb forever. No one believed in the Resurrection—not even the disciples. Therefore, the moral transformation of the disciples is one of the strongest grounds for our faith that Christ rose. We have here a psychological reality that can truly be grasped. The women tell them, “We saw Him,” and even then the disciples struggle to understand. They neither deceived others nor were they themselves deceived. How could anyone be deceived when the nous, the heart, and the senses all bear witness to what has been seen? For the Apostles, the Resurrection was not an idea; it was an event. They saw Him—
—they heard Him and touched Him: first the women here, and afterward others in various places throughout Judea. The Resurrection, I repeat, is firmly attested. Many say, “No one has come back from the other world.” But who else needed to come? The Author of life came. I ask you: after Christ rose, were not His words those of one who had passed beyond the tomb, one who had come from the world beyond? What else are we seeking? Every other human life is silent concerning what lies beyond. The life of Christ alone is different. He is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep, the first of them all. By “firstfruits” we mean the first ears of grain from the harvest; the full sheaves will follow, and our own resurrection will follow as well. He is the pledge—
You see, sometimes the devil tries to darken our understanding, to make us wonder whether this can truly be so. And what did Father Mitrophanis do? He is now seventy-five years old. When he was about twenty, I think this event was probably what led him to remain here. I do not know; that is what I think. He climbed above the tomb on Great Friday night and remained there through the night—
—to see what the hierarch would do when he entered. And indeed, when the unbeliever was coming down, with tears in his eyes, he saw the Orthodox hierarch, the Patriarch, come out, and the light appeared above him, shining brightly. Then he threw himself to the ground like an infant and grieved bitterly over his lack of faith. I tell you this as yet another confirmation, because it is a blessing of Divine Providence: the great miracle of the Resurrection. There is no greater miracle. It broke the law of this worldly reality. How many have suffered for it! Yet something has been added to this great miracle, something that perpetuates it throughout the ages. What is it? It is the light that comes forth and is carried even to Greece.
My beloved, when we return, let us pass these things on to others, since we ourselves should return illumined and inwardly transformed. The Resurrection at Pascha is not confined to Pascha Day. That would be a mistaken understanding of the Resurrection. No: our Church is the Church of the Resurrection. Two truths reign supreme: that Christ is God, and that, being God, He rose. The Resurrection! Pascha calls the historical event to remembrance. The Resurrection is also the remembrance of the future, linking us from this world to eternity by a single thread. Here, especially in this place, we experience the Resurrection continually. You heard a resurrectional Gospel reading. If we celebrate the Divine Liturgy here, you will see that everything performed here is resurrectional. Moreover, just as every Friday commemorates Great Friday, so too the service remains there—
You may ask your questions.
Thank you.
Very much.
You see, this place is close to the tomb. Here, as you heard, there was a field, a garden, as the Gospel tells us. Here you see a representation. Since this area belongs to the Catholics, the image presents the whole scene from a Catholic perspective. It depicts Mary Magdalene meeting our Lord, whom she took to be the gardener. This place commemorates the words spoken here. Inside there is an Italian Catholic altar, containing part of the pillar from the Praetorium at which Christ was scourged. You can see a third of it just as we enter. We will speak of it another time. Thank you.
As you know from Holy Scripture, Mary was the first to see the risen Christ. But I want you to know that, according to Tradition, Mary Magdalene was not the first to see our risen Lord, nor was she the first to learn of the Resurrection of Jesus. The first was His Most Holy Mother. The Church expresses this beautifully: “The angel cried to her who is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin; again I say, rejoice. Your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day.” Why should I rejoice, O angel? Because your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day. The angel united all the events concerning the Most Holy Theotokos, both what came before and what followed. It was he who told the Most Holy Theotokos that Christ had risen. Of course, the Holy Spirit did not will it to be written in the Gospel that people first heard the proclamation of the Resurrection from the Most Holy Mother.
For if such a claim came from a relative, it would not have been accepted, and so He allowed it to come from someone outside the family. Yet Mary Magdalene was not the first; the Most Holy Theotokos was the first to learn of the event. Now, as I told you, this place belongs to the Catholics. They use that spot as their Holy Table and celebrate their liturgies there, which last half an hour or so, in the afternoon, at midday, or whenever they wish. Let us continue. It is a little quieter here. Over there, as you can see, is the Demastoris. This church was first built by Constantine the Great and Saint Helen. Before that, there had been the persecutions. This is why, throughout this place, you will hear and understand that there is great devotion to these two Equals-to-the-Apostles.
That church encompassed all the holy places of pilgrimage. It was, of course, destroyed and rebuilt, and today it stands in the form in which we see it. We are now at the place before us called the Klapol. Farther down—look carefully later, not now—is the place where Christ was held prisoner for a short time, with His foot secured in a wooden stock. It is called the Klakoni, meaning a place through which Jesus passed before going to Golgotha. Behind us is what is called the Prison of Christ, where He was again held briefly. All these places are sacred, but some have a particular significance because something connected with the life of Christ took place there, especially during the final moments of His earthly life.
Beside it is also the place associated with the Theotokos, because it was probably from here that she saw Him as they led Him upward. Naturally, her heart began to suffer as a mother’s heart would, yet without murmuring or indignation. You should know that within this complex the various places have different arrangements. Some are shared, such as the place of the Deposition from the Cross. The place we visited most recently belongs to the Catholics, while those farther on belong exclusively to us. As for the Holy Sepulchre, we serve there as at a place of pilgrimage—indeed, one might even speak of ownership. Perhaps we should not pass over the fact that we hold the first place there. Farther down, however, they now want to drive us out, claiming that we have no rights. Our lady, our cover...
Let us focus. For others, the tomb at the heart of our faith is not a type. I happened to be inside when a professor was about to enter with his students. “This is the place where they say Christ rose,” he said, as though speaking of an ordinary matter. Do you understand? Yet faith is what gives these things life. These, then, are the places here, including the stocks.
The place from which Christ was watched; prayer is humanity’s only refuge. Let us move on.
