Summary

The lecture addresses Orthodox–Roman Catholic dialogue as a source of anxiety on Mount Athos and warns against unity that bypasses doctrinal truth. Christians should respond through prayer, peaceful witness, spiritual preparation, and confidence that Jesus Christ preserves His Church. The lecture concludes with hopeful signs of Orthodox renewal, including renewed monasticism, use of the prayer rope, and the return of sacred relics.

Saint Luke calls us today as well; and since God has granted that we should be together, and since, with God’s help, I have also learned not to say no...

Let me say something that may also be considered timely. It is what these days call for, and what many of the brethren I met here on the Holy Mountain have asked of me, since our Most Holy Theotokos granted that I should come again this year. It is the issue of the day—the matter, as one might call it, of the dialogue between the Orthodox and the Papists.

I know how you yourselves regard this matter.

It can torment many people and cause them sorrow. They have lost their peace, especially here in this holy place, where they came to find inner stillness. Their peace—or its opposite, anxiety—will therefore depend on how they understand the matter. If we wished to reflect philosophically on this subject and look back through history, we would find that this effort of the Latins against us...

is attempt number...

fifteen, according to one author. Fourteen other times, officially or unofficially, the Latins have attempted to assimilate us, because this is the deeper aim of Papism: the assimilation of Orthodoxy. It is not, “one flock under one shepherd,” but one flock under one Pope. According to this author, Avrazis, fourteen full times they have attempted what they are attempting today, and this is what concerns...

those here who desire their salvation, who respect and love Orthodoxy, and who honor the blood and struggles of the Saints and all they did to preserve the one faith. To many people who do not understand, union is something desirable: union with people remaining just as they are, without discussing the doctrinal differences, but merely showing a certain kind of love. Yet love without truth is not love; it is falsehood. For our Christ is indeed love, but He is also truth—and above all, truth. Nowhere did He formally say...

“I am love.” That He is love is made manifest by the sacrifice He offered. Love is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, as Paul says to the Galatians. You yourselves read this in chapter five, verse twenty-two and following. But to the Samaritan woman He said that we “must worship in spirit and in truth.” The truth of this love comes first. There are many kinds of love, and some of them even lead people to suicide. Satan too has what he calls love, but it is not a love that brings salvation. This present phase is the most dangerous, because it has been carefully planned and organized. Preparatory work has been done; sabotage has taken place; the foundations of Orthodoxy have been undermined. This has been especially so in recent times, since the European Economic Community appeared on the scene—something that some have lately described as a Trojan horse intended to swallow up Orthodoxy. We Orthodox have no right to avoid dialogue. Indeed, since we say that we possess the truth—and we truly do possess it—we are obliged to set it forth and tell them: “Gentlemen, this is the truth, and we shall remain faithful to it even unto blood.” Of course, when we hear talk of bloodshed and such things...

and when we read about the Inquisitions, and when you who live on the Holy Mountain read history, and so forth—of course we do not want such things. That is true. And our Lord has told us to pray that we may not enter into temptation. But now the question arises: Why, after all, are all these things happening, and how does the Lord permit them? If we are to think and speak in an Orthodox way, it is because of our sinfulness. We have not treasured as we should this treasure called Orthodoxy. We may be Orthodox, call ourselves Orthodox, and be registered as Orthodox, yet we do not live in an Orthodox manner. Even here on this renowned Holy Mountain, faults may be found that justify the description I am giving at this moment. The Lord therefore permits these things in proportion to the extent of our own estrangement...

because many of us believe that we can defend ourselves against these things by our own strength. He permits us, as we say, to fall flat on our faces, so that we may lift our eyes toward God. I often hear David say somewhere...

“We trust not in chariots, nor in weapons”—I do not remember exactly how he puts it there—“but we journey with God; we go forward with God.” Lately, this too has somehow departed from us, and we think that we ourselves will be able to uphold this cause. In other words, we live as though we were children without a father, as orphans. Of course, we say the Our Father, but we have no real connection even with the substance of the Our Father. For when we say the Our Father, we must not live like orphans, if we truly have a Father in Heaven and truly believe it. This Father in Heaven is not some human being, some powerful man, some general or Pharaoh, as the world imagines—a person in whose strong arm one might place one’s trust and have as a helper. He is the One who...

in a miraculous way, always watches over us. Indeed, if we were to read Deuteronomy in the Old Testament and see what happened to the people of Israel—when they found themselves facing enemies and when they fell into the hands of their enemies—we would have very, very much to learn.

Offhand, I remember what we read about Gideon, when God sent the Angel to him as he was threshing and told him to prepare to...

muster the people and wage war on God’s behalf. Gideon would not accept this, if you remember the passage we read in the sixth chapter concerning Gideon—that is, in the sixth chapter of Judges. It is also where we find a type of our Most Holy Theotokos, in the words, “Gideon foresaw the dew-covered fleece.” When you read the events there, you will see that God sent the Angel to this simple man. In humility, Gideon considered his own strength and ability and would not accept, saying, “I am too weak to fulfill this role. I cannot believe that God could have made such a mistake as to send me, a weak man, to do these things.” Since the Angel persisted, Gideon asked for a miracle, as you will again remember.

The miracle was this: he would place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor, and if in the morning the fleece was wet while the whole threshing floor was dry, then he would believe. And indeed, in the morning, as Holy Scripture tells us, they wrung out the fleece and filled a basin with water. But Gideon asked that the reverse should also happen: that the whole threshing floor should be wet and the fleece dry. God granted this as well, and then Gideon believed that God had truly chosen him, and he began to muster an army. The call to arms brought together—I do not remember how many—about thirty thousand men, I think. Then God said to him, “So many are not needed. What do you want with them?”

“Look at your opponents. You are thirty thousand men. Why do you need so many? Let them go.” God then gave him a test by which to distinguish those who should remain. He was to have them run, and when they passed by the water, he was to choose those who did not kneel to drink but scooped the water up with their hands and lapped it, as we say, like a dog. “Choose those men; we need no others.” From approximately thirty thousand, only three hundred remained. Then, with those three hundred, he won a victory that will make you tremble if you read the account. Elsewhere you will also read that God hurled stones from Heaven against the enemy troops. And if you read another detail found in the sixth chapter of Isaiah, you will see that two unbelieving kings once declared war against a faithful king.

The poor king was overwhelmed. What was to happen? This continues the theme of “not in chariots” that we mentioned earlier: what it means to be Orthodox, to believe in the true God, and what power that faith possesses. As the account says, he removed his royal insignia, went to the edge of the city dressed only in linen, and prayed. God then sent Isaiah and told him, “Go and say this and this to the king.” Isaiah went and found the king there praying and experiencing the power of God, and he delivered the message: “God says: Do not be afraid of those two smoking firebrands.” That is how He described those great and powerful rulers. We might compare them to Hitler and Mussolini—two empires that declared war on us, a tiny country.

“Are you afraid of those two smoking firebrands?” And indeed, the outcome was the very opposite of what they expected. Again, if we read about the events that led to the establishment of the Red Cross—you may not know that the Red Cross has a scriptural foundation—we find that it was inspired by an act of Elisha. When Samaria was surrounded and Gehazi went out in the morning and was frightened at the sight of so many troops, Elisha prayed. Then Gehazi saw that those troops were themselves surrounded, and Elisha told him, “Those who are with us are more than those who are against us.”

The young man took courage. Elisha then struck the enemies with blindness and led them into the city square—the square of Samaria, as the account says—and took captive those who had thought they were taking others captive. Then, if you remember, someone asked, “Shall we strike them down?” “No, you shall not strike them. Regard them as sacred persons. Give them food, allow them to return to their homeland, and let them leave us in peace.” So those strong and mighty men who had come to take captives were themselves captured and humiliated. I mention only a few examples to show you who the God is in whom we believe. And when a person sees that we have such an almighty God, he will immediately ask, “Then why does He permit such a temptation?” The reason for the temptation is simply what I have already told you: we have failed to value Orthodoxy, this gift...

for both this present life and eternity. For Orthodoxy does not accompany a person only as far as the grave; it accompanies him beyond the grave as well. I do not know whether you are aware of this, but Catholics have no sacrifice, and consequently anyone who dies a Catholic goes straight into the ground, like a stake driven into a vineyard. That is, he goes beneath the earth. What has happened has happened. Let the Pope invent other methods, claiming that the good works of some can supposedly erase the sins of others. These are childish absurdities. In any event, no sacrifice is offered, no oblation is made, and the person remains exactly as he was when the photographic lens of death captured him. Someone may now ask, “Are we to say these things so bluntly?” What else can we do?

Thank you. There is nothing for us to do but repent and go and awaken Him who seems to be asleep in the bow. This is what the Apostles did when, as you remember, they were on the Sea of Gennesaret. A fierce storm arose, the boat was in danger, and Christ seemed to be asleep. They woke Him, and He said, “Peace, be still,” and immediately the waves ceased. We have not turned toward Heaven, even though the purpose of this threat is precisely to make us turn toward Him. When a mother hides her presence from her little child, she does so that the child may desire her more, feel a greater need for her, seek her out, and henceforth pay heed

to her commands, counsel, and guidance, lest he lose her and be deprived of her. Something similar is happening in this case. Does this mean that we should sit with our arms folded? Should we not respond? Should we not protest? We may make peaceful protests, although even these will not be necessary once the people are enlightened. If people turn their eyes toward Heaven, everything will be set right. We imagine that we are guarding the Church of Christ, as though Christ either did not exist, were powerless, or had gone away on holiday, leaving us to guard it. That is what we imagine, but it is a mistake. He guards His own Church. If He does not guard His Church, as I hear in the Psalms you read here, “the watchman keeps vigil in vain,”

and “the builder labors in vain.” We should have very little fear. There is one thing, however, that we must do: we must prepare ourselves. Those who are able to endure a temptation that may come will receive great spiritual benefit from it. As you know, the weak are not placed on the front line. If you observe how storks transport weak birds, you will see that they carry them on their wings. In times of danger they keep them behind the lines. Animals defending themselves against wolves likewise place the weak in the middle, form a circle around them, and then resist, fight, and defend themselves. From writings I have read here, the Most Holy Theotokos herself

has told many fathers that, if they do not have the strength to resist, they should withdraw and hide, leaving the resistance to those who do have the strength. These may even suffer martyrdom, which, as you know, is the most perfect death and the most perfect Baptism—the Baptism of blood. Concerning this Baptism, this martyrdom, and this crown, the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews, “of whom the world was not worthy.” Today we are not worthy to be granted such martyrdom—God forbid that we should treat it lightly, for it lasts but a moment yet bears fruit in eternity. Our conduct must be brotherly and Christian.

These people are in error, and many of our own people have also been led astray. You know that today, there are reportedly more than fifty Jewish employees working within the Greek state broadcaster, ERT. It has also been arranged for people who are in no sense Orthodox—one by the name of Alexiou and another by the name of Panotis—to brainwash Orthodox Christians and prepare the ground so that the people will not resist any union they have devised. The Patriarchate, as you know, does not take a direct position, because it exists within a world where

it can scarcely even breathe, there in Turkey, under pressure from America and all the rest. Yet we can help them and guard ourselves if we turn toward Heaven and beseech Christ day and night to overlook our many sins—that is, the cause of this situation—and not surrender us. If Christ does not surrender us, then none of these people, however carefully they may have organized our betrayal and subjugation, will succeed. Our defense is what Christ told His disciples on the evening of Great Thursday: “Pray, lest you enter into temptation.” This is our task. I had heard that the Holy Mountain defended itself during the dictatorship...

Pattakos and the others issued a decree against the Holy Mountain: it was to become a museum, the monks were to be gathered in one place, and the sacred relics in another. Do you understand what that would have meant? Yet in a single night it fell—not merely the government, but the entire seven-year dictatorship. If, then, we give Christ an occasion to act and, through prayer, unbind His hands, everything will change completely. He has the power to throw them into confusion and to create a Babel among them, just as He did the other day. Did you see or read anything in the secular newspapers? You read nothing, because He turned everything around through a single statement made by the Pope, who in his pride exposed himself.

Even while this council of supposed love and reconciliation was taking place, he declared before fifty thousand spectators that his primacy was bestowed by God, that Christ had given it to him from Heaven, and that he had no intention whatsoever of relinquishing it. You understand what happened then. However cold their blood may have been, they certainly shuddered, and it became perfectly clear that this was a Trojan horse. They dispersed without achieving anything sound. They also issued a false communiqué, which the Church of Greece will challenge, because it apparently states that this decision was reached unanimously,

which is false. The Church of Greece did not consent, because its representatives had received no such authorization. Their task was simply to observe and to set forth the position of the Orthodox Church: that the Orthodox Church under no circumstances accepts Uniatism, papal primacy, or any of the related claims. There is now a possibility that, because politicians are also involved and have managed to establish in Athens a stronghold for this diplomatic horde, we may be forced into certain situations. Yet all these efforts will be brought to nothing if we humbly acknowledge that Christ cares for His Church. It is impossible to defeat the Most Holy Theotokos, impossible to defeat the Saints, and impossible to defeat Christ.

One need only read the accounts of Saint Spyridon. There one finds that the Franks attempted to turn his holy church into a church with a Latin altar, or to build one alongside it, and so forth. What did the Saint do to them? He even burned the portrait of the man who was creating this situation and brought ruin upon Venice. He burned the man’s portrait, in addition to the harm that befell him here, and he also removed from the scene the other man, our own Orthodox theologian, who vanished from the face of the earth. These Saints are alive; they have not died. They are here, if only we choose to awaken them. Our anger, then, and this fury of ours must be transformed into compassion, because Christ has compassion on these people. We possess these examples, which reveal the truth. We know where the truth is and where sanctification is found.

The way we confront these matters is not right, because a person cannot pray to Christ while raging. He must be meek, filled inwardly with love, compassion, and tears: “My Christ, open their eyes as well, for You were crucified for them too.” We are not made from different earth. We are made from the same earth as they are—the Roman Catholics, the Protestants, the Muslims, and, for that matter, the Buddhists. We have not struggled in such a way that Christ should esteem us and say, “Do not touch these people; leave them alone.” Besides, the Holy Mountain should not be afraid, because the Most Holy Theotokos guarded it through the Turks for four hundred years. Even if today it is endangered by the Greeks, she remains the same, with the power somehow to scatter all these threats.

I believe, then, that we should not be anxious in this way. Our concern should be that we are not as we ought to be and that we do not unbind Christ’s hands so that He may defend us. That alone should concern us. Even if He allows us to be handed over, that may well turn out for our good, as it is turning out for good in Russia today. In Russia today the Church is being formed anew. The Church needs persecution. Basil, like the beech tree, needs wind so that its roots may grow deep; then it can withstand the storm. There they did not struggle, no blood was shed, and they received Christianity as though with a carnation in their hands. For that very reason they did not value it. But now, down in the catacombs, amid persecutions, martyrdoms, Siberia, and all the rest, the Church is being formed, and she will appear on the scene once again.

Of course, if they are caught, they will be martyrs for eternity, because they will accept their suffering with steadfast endurance. We, of course, do not desire either these persecutions or these conditions, because we do not understand that from the moment we said no to Satan at our Baptism, we entered a state of war. We said “no,” meaning, “I will no longer do your will.” This is where a person must be watchful. Someone may ask, “Is it not good to have peace?” But what do you want with such peace? Go to a lake and look at it when there is a dead calm. What will you see? Melon rinds, scraps of paper, and all kinds of discarded things. But when the wind blows,

you will see the shore and the lake turn azure, as the wind carries all that rubbish away. Something similar happens here. We want quiet and tranquility, yet we have no intention of making good use of God’s kindness and longsuffering. We want to eat well, sleep warmly, hold our feasts, enjoy ourselves, and make all the false playthings we make—and then we expect to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, which is crimson with the blood of our martyrs. These two things do not fit together. Persecution benefits a person. It awakens him and fills him with the fear of God, because he sees the ground giving way beneath his feet. Spiritual benefit, then, will also come from this whole situation.

Some of those who are indifferent—who viewed the Church from a distance without paying attention to her and often hurled accusations at her as though throwing stones—will be compelled to love her once they are enlightened and understand what it would mean for Orthodoxy to be lost. It would be better for the sun and its material light to disappear, and for our eyes to become blind, than for Orthodoxy to be lost. We may not understand this today, but we shall understand it when we pass beyond the grave. Then we shall understand the meaning of the Orthodox clergy, even when they are sinful; the meaning of a monk’s prayer; and the meaning of monastic life and the monastic institution as a whole. Then we shall understand these things. Thank you.

Therefore, this should not distress me. We should ask Christ that, if He sees we are weak, He take this burden from us. But if He sees that we can endure it and that it will be for our good, so that we may receive greater crowns, then let Him give us the strength to stand and bear a faithful witness. Yet from what I have been seeing lately—I do not know whether you have noticed it too—there is something encouraging. Despite our sins, Christ finds mitigating circumstances for us and helps us. He sees that we are truly trapped. He sees that everything is against us. Day and night, everyone—the whole world—is against us, not so much against our nation as against our faith.

We are a people different from all other peoples. This is not, of course, because we were made from different earth, but because we have infant Baptism. This grafting through infant Baptism is what makes us a different people and places us in opposition to Satan from our earliest infancy. Of course, Satan does nothing but produce Saints, because if the adversary disappeared, we would have no Saints. In his malice he accomplishes nothing else, provided that we remain watchful and turn his attacks to good use. That is the point. Yet strangely enough, during these recent years I see a turning toward monasticism and Orthodoxy, a return to the Mysteries, despite

the destruction taking place outside through the flesh, new theories, and all the rest. Today the world is being divided into two great camps. What was prophetically written in the Apocalypse is being fulfilled: “Let the filthy still be filthy, and let the holy still be sanctified.” Two groups are appearing today, like the extreme right and the extreme left. You will see people becoming Saints in the midst of the world’s wickedness—indeed, because of the world’s wickedness and corruption. You will also see people destroying themselves, going completely to the opposite extreme, and becoming antichrists in the fullest sense of the word, so that before long they may welcome the Antichrist. In Greece, however, I see the stakes being driven more deeply.

The monasteries are more deeply rooted and more numerous, and Orthodoxy is spreading still further. In Athens itself, there are even people from what we call the upper levels of society who hold a small prayer rope concealed in their hand. You see a judge on the bench moving a prayer rope with his left hand. You see a lawyer with a small prayer rope, or a doctor holding one. In Athens you see young women, ladies, and even women of high society doing the same. This means that something is happening. Grace is taking care to equip and preserve these healthy members, these persons. Another encouraging sign is the return, in various ways,

of sacred relics—the stolen or sold relics that are returning to Greece, having been taken chiefly, as you know, by the Papacy. This too is encouraging. I was deeply struck by the action of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, who appeared to the former pope—Paul, or John XXIII; I do not remember what he was called—and said to him, “Send me home.”

John XXIII—I do not remember exactly what his name was—and said to him, “Send me home.” He was frightened and notified Benedict, the Patriarch, who sent a delegation to bring him back home. And today Saint Sabbas the Sanctified is there, in the Lavra. We also see Saint Ignatius.

We see the case of Titus from Cyprus. More recently, we have seen Saint Demetrios, and that other saint there, Saint Andrew of Patras, and so on. All these things are speaking to us; they are telling us something. It is encouraging that all these Saints are gathering here, in Orthodoxy, in Greece. Something must be going to happen. It seems they are asking the Lord to return them to the places of their martyrdom, as with Saint Demetrios of Thessaloniki. I happened to be there on the eve of the arrival of the Saint’s relics in Thessaloniki. The whole city of Thessaloniki was filled with fragrance. And while the relics were still in Athens, if you had seen what was coming forth from the Saint’s tomb there, from his holy reliquary and his holy skull, you would have said that the city was waiting for its Saint

to return. These things do not happen by chance. Of course, he once departed from there, as we know from history, just as Saint Achillios also departed: he was stolen, by the Lord’s permission and because of our sins. But now he is returning, even though we still transgress and, in the eyes of God, may perhaps be worse than people were then. You see how shamelessness, lawlessness, indifference, lust, and everything else have multiplied and overflowed. Yet what lies beneath the surface? Who are those with the power to soften the justice of God, so that He acts in this way? Perhaps the blood of these martyrs, these Saints, is crying out for justice, because we have been kept far from the truths of the faith. Through their propaganda, the papists and Zionism have kept us far away.

The papacy used to be against Zionism and against the Masons. Today it supports the Masons. They have managed to join forces against Orthodoxy. But they will not swallow us up. God may permit us to pass through fire, but we shall not be consumed, because Greece, as I told you last night, is destined to play a great role, and after the coming events it will play a unique role. Earlier, when the Greeks came to visit Christ while He was still here on earth, our Christ said, as you may remember, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” By extension, this very event has significance in eternity, and Greece is destined to play a role. Of course, they are trying to deprive her of strength.

They want the truths of faith and homeland—that is, tradition and Orthodoxy—to be swept aside, although these are precisely what give the people stability and form their character. They are trying to erase them. That is why they have strangled our language. Instead of lifting the people up to the level of the language, they brought the language down to the level of the people, leaving them once again in an infantile state, unable to understand the Gospel or know the texts of the Church. The justice of God sees all these things, of course, and one day they will come back upon the heads of those responsible. We might have remained outside the great destruction that humanity is preparing for itself this time. But because of our sins,

I fear that the waves will carry us along—that we shall experience what sailors call the wake. When a whirlwind passes, they say, “Now we are caught in the wake.” We shall not be at the very heart of it, where it could sink us, but we shall feel its wake, just as a ship passing far offshore sends waves toward the beach. That is exactly what will happen this time as well. Nevertheless, let us not despair. Prayer upon prayer, fasting upon fasting, self-restraint upon self-restraint, humility upon humility—these are the weapons through which we shall be helped and shall help others. Here on the Holy Mountain, which has enjoyed the special love of our Most Holy Theotokos, assurance has been given concerning these matters and these truths.

The Holy Mountain will struggle in a different way. The people do not know how they are to struggle. If they hear a siren tomorrow, they will panic. But when the monk hears it, he will kneel, and the kneeling prayer of one righteous person is enough to shelter all humanity. Do not be afraid of the weapons they call atomic weapons, with all the claims that they will destroy everything and do this or that. God has the power to throw every gun barrel into confusion. God has the power to render all these works of Satan useless.

I am not saying this simply so that we may preserve this temporary life. If God sees that by passing through these things we shall fare better in eternity, then may He permit them. But if He sees that we shall not—either because we shall lose heart or because we shall be needed to play some role tomorrow—then be absolutely certain. We must...

We must be certain that events will unfold in whatever way is for our spiritual good. I have great faith in our Most Holy Theotokos, who has great boldness before God. If we are willing to turn the helm even a little toward the right course, she will find an opportunity not to let us fall into temptation or be lost. To close this parenthesis, which arose from the question of what we should think about this dialogue, I would say this: wherever you are, and whoever is under your influence, besides offering your prayers, explain to them that there is no other way. There is no need to take to the streets and shout. Such things are not proper to a Christian.

Through prayer, the Christian has the power even to enlist the devil to serve his good. Paul says to Timothy, “Pray for kings, for those in authority,” and so on. What kind of kings were they? Unbaptized kings and idolaters. What kind of officials were they? Idolaters. They had not even been baptized. And yet God had the power to use them. When I went to Sinai to work there on the sacred treasures and other things, I saw two large documents of a kind that has a special name, though I do not remember what they are called. One was issued by Napoleon the Great and the other by Muhammad...

They had issued favorable decrees. Muhammad’s, in fact, was an ahdname. They had sealed them with the imprint of their own palms and had granted privileges to the monastery, so that it would not be harmed but preserved and protected even by those very enemies, the Muslims, the followers of Muhammad. Napoleon the Great had likewise granted privileges to the monastery. Here on the Holy Mountain, too, there must be such chrysobulls, lead-sealed documents, or whatever you call them, granting rights to the monasteries on behalf of the Turks. What does this mean? It means that there is Another who moves people to speak what is good. Never follow a person who is driven by outward activism, even when what you are doing appears plausibly to be right...

if it is contrary to the Gospel. The Gospel says clearly that in everything a person must turn to God, even if he has the power to call down fire from heaven. I remember that John, Peter, and James once spoke to our Christ after some people had refused to receive Him. They had gone to a village to preach, and the villagers had driven them away harshly. John became angry, and Peter became angry. “Lord, shall we command fire to fall from heaven and consume them, as happened in the days of Elijah?” The Lord, it says, smiled and replied, “We are not of that spirit. We did not come to take revenge and fill Hell an hour sooner.” A person who tries to resolve a situation by force does not have God’s blessing. God is pleased...

when a person acknowledges his weakness in such circumstances and entrusts everything to Him who has the power both to shelter us and to help them. God’s divine uncreated energy works in two ways, as they say. God does not act as we do. God desires the salvation of both sides. That is the Gospel. When we act forcefully, we behave as though our being in the right gives us permission to descend upon others, level everything, and accuse everyone—even our own people, whom we often accuse as well. Let us not accuse our own Church today under the pretext that we are defending her. “What is this man doing? What is Seraphim doing? What is Demetrios doing? What is the other one doing?” and so on. What is he doing? Perhaps, in proportion to his sins, he should have done something even worse. Why do you not think of it that way? And what have you done for him? Have you prayed at all that God might strengthen and illumine him, so that he may do what is right? Instead...

you play the part of a mouse. You gnaw away, becoming like a rodent; you accuse and stir things up. You have done nothing helpful. You have not knelt in prayer or gathered your family and said, “Shut yourselves in and weep, so that you may help these people who stand at the front,” because they truly are at the front. Go out there yourself and see what you would do. Take up the bishop’s staff yourself and see what blows you would receive from the devil. We stand outside the dance and offer our opinions. Instead of strengthening them, we accuse them. Then Christ will say, “Do you want Me to give you someone worse?” Many say that one person is unworthy, another is unworthy, and so on, while our ego considers us worthy. When Saint Athanasius the Great was once asked about this, he said, “As the people are, so are their rulers.” We ourselves are no better. God has the power, if only we are willing to...

turn toward God. Let me tell you one more thing and then stop, because I am sure I have tired you. In the accounts of Theodoret concerning the early centuries, it is said that there was once a ruler in Constantinople who was fiercely hostile to Christ. Just as today there are people hostile to Christ in governments who pass laws that undermine the family and religion, so it was then. The Christians there became discouraged and fell into despair. But some who were calmer thought they might go out into the desert, where there lived a widely respected elder, and ask his counsel. And so they did.

They walked a great distance and arrived exhausted. From afar, the elder saw three men approaching. When they finally arrived, he received them. “My children,” he asked, “what brings you here?” “Holy Elder, something weighs heavily upon us.” “What is troubling you, my children?” “This and that is happening in Constantinople. Have you heard anything about it?” “No,” he replied. “Since I left Constantinople, this is the first time I have seen anyone. I do not know what is happening. I do not know whether faith still exists or whether anything remains.” So they began to tell him about this evil ruler and asked what they should do, since he was going to destroy everything and they would no longer be able to live as Orthodox Christians. “My children, I do not have the gift of prophecy. I pray here for my sins, and that is why I left the world. These matters are not within my authority.”

“Perhaps God will give you assurance in some other way.” But they did not want to leave. They persisted and pleaded with the elder, saying, as we do, “Elder, give us a word,” so that they could return with something to tell the others below, who were awaiting his answer. To console them, he said, “Since you insist, go now and return in fifteen days. I too shall pray and beseech our Lord; and if He has something to tell you through me, I shall tell you how you should conduct yourselves.” So they departed empty-handed, but with the precious hope that they would receive an answer...

Those in favor and those opposed heard of this after a few days. The men conveyed the elder’s words to the people below, and after fifteen days they set out again. From afar, the elder saw them approaching. Yet up to that very moment, Heaven had given him no answer. The elder had, of course, added prayer to prayer, fasting to fasting, vigil to vigil, and so on, asking God to give him assurance on behalf of these people. They were perhaps ten yards from his hut, and still he had received nothing. At last they arrived and greeted him, naturally with every faculty alert, ready to hear and see. “Did you receive an answer?” “My children, the answer has come just this moment.” “What was the answer, Elder?”

“God had no one worse to give you, so He gave you this man. Nothing more, nothing more. In proportion to the way you live, He had no one worse to give you.” They gathered their things and left. The people below were waiting. Word spread that the answer had indeed been devastating for them. When the people heard what had happened, they began to examine themselves. Those Christians found themselves guilty of many things, just as happens today. A person today calls himself an Orthodox Christian, with vigil lamps, icons, crosses, celebrations of the Resurrection, feast days, and so on, yet he refuses to have children, does not fast, and exercises no self-restraint.

He does not enter Holy Matrimony honorably and morally, but comes to it dishonorably, along with a thousand other things. He lies in business, cheats here and there, and then makes the sign of the Cross. God does not want this kind of Christianity. So they began to repent and go to Holy Confession, and because of the pressure of that situation, a very great number returned to Christ. Then the question arose, just as it did in our own time under Papadopoulos: “Even if we repent, who will remove this man?” He held his position so securely that it seemed impossible for him to be removed. He was so strongly entrenched that it seemed impossible for him to be removed. But when God saw their repentance and saw that the purpose for which this man had been permitted to rule had been fulfilled, He placed fear within the ruler. That fear...

His fear was this: that someone would assassinate him. With this thought continually in mind, the ruler began considering and taking security measures. I do not know whether you are aware that Papadopoulos had restored the underground passage running from the Royal Palace to Phaleron, which dated back to the time of Kapodistrias. He had put it back into use. In fact, the newspaper Akropolis published a plan of it, and I kept it somewhere, though I do not remember where. So this ruler thought that he might be assassinated. He decided that, if he were attacked, he would escape through an underground tunnel leading to the Golden Horn, where a ship would always be waiting...

It would lie at anchor there, ready to receive him and carry him to safety. He therefore gave the order, the plans were drawn up, and the tunnel was built. When he was informed that the work had been completed, he went to inspect it. He reached the Golden Horn, admired the tunnel, and began to feel somewhat secure. Then a monk appeared and said to him, “What you have built will not save you. You will be saved only if you repent.” The ruler became furious. “Who are you, you wretched monk, and how dare you say such things?” The elder was unmoved. “I have told you what I had to tell you,” he said. The elder then went on his way, and the ruler continued in the other direction. But this was enough to make him even more uneasy, and he began to think, “Very well, if they come by land, I shall escape to the Golden Horn.”

“But if they come by sea, where shall I flee?” So he devised a new plan. “I shall build another escape route in the direction of Alexandroupolis.” He ordered another passage to be built in that direction, where mounted guards with horses would patrol all day long, so that in an emergency he could mount a horse and flee. Those, after all, were the means available in those days. When this passage was completed and he went to inspect it, there was the monk again, standing before him. The moment he saw him, he was struck speechless. “This will not save you either. Only repentance will save you.” Then the ruler began hurling abuse at the monk. The monk paid no attention and went away.

He could no longer find anywhere he felt safe enough to sleep. He had built two tunnels, but his fear remained. In the end, one of his chamber attendants hid in his room beneath the bed, and one night slaughtered him like a goat as he lay there. Thus the city was set free. What human beings could not accomplish, God accomplished. God has the same power to help us as well. He has not died; He is still the same. If you ever hear that God has died and has even been buried, then you may despair. But if He lives, do not be afraid. That is what I wished to tell you about the question of what we should do concerning the Roman Catholics.
