Summary

Jerusalem is presented as the divinely preserved center of the Holy Land, sanctified first through Abraham’s intended sacrifice of Isaac and ultimately through Christ’s Passion and blood. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre and its courtyard contain Orthodox and non-Orthodox chapels, processions, inscriptions, and sacred sites commemorating Christ’s Passion, Burial, and Resurrection. The faithful are urged to support the Jerusalem brotherhood through personal service, material assistance, and prayer, recognizing the Holy Places as both a great inheritance and a grave responsibility.

Your Excellency the Exarch, Reverend Fathers, beloved brethren in Christ: for the third time I have been invited to be among you, and specifically to take part in the efforts of this association, which for twenty years has shown such love for the Holy Places and has labored quietly for their spiritual and material advancement.

Can anyone be found who is able to convey what is there and what this association is striving for? A person would need great strength from God to communicate all that exists and takes place there. At our other gatherings, we spoke about subjects different from the one on which, this evening, by the grace of the Lord and through your prayers, I would like to speak. The center of this whole matter,

where the greatest and most unrepeatable events in the world took place, is Holy Jerusalem. According to tradition, this city was built fifteen hundred years before Christ. Although it suffered destruction and persecution at the hands of various people who had no relationship with God, it continues to exist and will exist until the end of the age. For this is the will of Him who holds all things in His hand; despite human wickedness, His will is always accomplished.

Even His enemies do nothing other than the will of God. Jerusalem has become what it is because of the blessing given before and during... I say beforehand because Jerusalem was not first blessed on the day when Christ appeared there. It had already been blessed beforehand through types and symbols. It was first blessed by the Patriarch Abraham, when he was called to sacrifice his son, who in every respect was a type foreshadowing our Lord. And the place where this happened was none other than Jerusalem.

That very place still exists today, and later in the presentation I shall show it to you. From that time onward, the favor of God rested upon this city. Of course, everything reached its culmination when He Himself came and walked upon it, when He Himself came and watered it with His own blood. If we read the history of all the cities of the world, we shall find no other city that has been persecuted with such hatred and wickedness and then rebuilt again. Jerusalem has been destroyed approximately fifteen times, and yet it exists and will continue to exist, so long as God wills it.

Allow me a brief aside. It would exist in even greater glory if these children of Zion fulfilled their duty. As we heard earlier, this place is in need, and a person can help in three ways. First, one can offer blood—not blood in a transfusion bottle, but by going there oneself, strengthening the brotherhood there, and enabling it to stand securely. And if one's health does not permit this—for many of us often wish to become blood donors, but our health does not allow it—then we can offer material assistance.

And if someone says that he has no material goods to offer either, he can offer prayer, which sets both personal service and material assistance in order. Unfortunately, however, we are forgetful, and we shall be judged for it, because God has bestowed a great blessing upon us, and we have not valued it as we should. Since our subject is limited to Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre—that is, the holy church there, the Church of the Resurrection—I shall try not to stray from it, though I cannot always manage that. Let me tell you something specific about this city...

Many things have been written, and I have gathered a selection of them for your sake and for my own spiritual treasury. A person hears the name “Jerusalem” and naturally wants to know where the word comes from. First, we should know that “Jerusalem” is a Hebrew word, interpreted as “possession of peace” or “inheritance of peace.” It is the capital of the Holy Land, and there is no more glorious capital in the world. Other capitals may have gardens, bridges, theaters, and I do not know what else. But they do not possess what this city possesses. Christians must not weigh things according to human standards, but according to divine ones.

Human beings use one set of scales, and God another. Human beings use one measure, and God another. People see outward appearances, but God sees what lies within. As I told you, this place, Jerusalem, was sanctified from the beginning through Abraham's sacrifice, which foreshadowed the sacrifice of Jesus. If we read the twenty-second chapter of Genesis, we shall find the account there and see the image of Jesus vividly portrayed in prophecy. This city was called Salem, meaning “peace,” as we read once again in the fourteenth chapter of Genesis.

As I told you, it was associated with Melchizedek around fifteen hundred years before Christ. Later, the city of Salem was captured by the Jebusites and was called Jebus, as we read in Judges 19:10. It then passed into the hands of the Hebrews and came to be called Jebus-Salem, Jerusalem. I am explaining roughly how the name arose. It was later conquered by David and was called the City of David. It then became the religious and political center of the Hebrew kingdom.

It attained its greatest and unsurpassed glory when God Himself walked upon it and watered it with His own blood, and when He revealed Himself in the Temple there. I mention this merely as a point of geographical interest: the city stands 780 meters above the Mediterranean Sea.

It stands 1,150 meters above the Dead Sea. I do not know whether you are aware that the Dead Sea lies approximately 300 meters below the level of the Mediterranean. After the land was divided among the twelve tribes and each received its own portion, Jerusalem became the capital of Judah, as the account relates.

It was first destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, as we read in the fourteenth chapter of Fourth Kings.

It was rebuilt, however, in 536 before Christ. In 332 it was occupied, submitted, surrendered—I do not know precisely how to put it—without a battle to Alexander the Great.

I do not know whether you are familiar with this event. It helps us understand God's special favor toward Jerusalem and His plan for the city. When Alexander the Great arrived there, the high priest then serving in the city, whose name was Jaddua, was troubled over whether he should resist him.

God told him, “Do not resist, for the man who is coming belongs to Me.” Alexander the Great dismounted from his horse, went forward, bowed before the high priest, and was given the keys of the city. About three kilometers outside Jerusalem, somewhere in the direction of Galilee, near the place called Lesser Galilee, there is a column where, according to tradition, Alexander the Great met the high priest. What happened afterward further confirms this revelation. That evening, a meal was held—what we might call a victory banquet, although there had been no victory; it was simply the customary meal upon entering a new city. Parmenion, Alexander the Great's aide-de-camp, refused to sit down and was visibly angry and agitated.

Alexander summoned him and asked, “Why are you behaving this way?” And do you know what he replied? “How can you sit at such a servile table? We never dismounted from our horses from the moment we set out. Why did you dismount? I can never accept that you bowed before a priest.” Alexander the Great then said to him, “If you knew what God told me yesterday afternoon about this city and this high priest, you too would have dismounted.” God had spoken to the high priest, but He had also spoken to Alexander the Great: “This city is Mine. And you, high priest, must know that the man who is coming belongs to Me.” This conquest, then, is another event we need to know if we are to understand God's plan and the way God works.

After the death of Alexander the Great, the city was unfortunately captured by one of the Ptolemies on a Sabbath. At that time the Jews, observing the Law and refusing to take action on the Sabbath, were overcome and captured by their enemies. It is also recorded that in 170 before Christ the city was captured by Antiochus Epiphanes, who demolished its walls. But in 165 it was liberated once again by the Maccabees. It fared well for about a hundred years. Although it remained enslaved beneath the heel of Rome, it had its own king, Herod the Great, as you know. It was then that this city truly became the city venerated by nearly half the people on the entire planet because of Jesus, for afterward they came to believe

in Jesus. The city that had achieved such greatness and risen to such heights was later plowed into the ground because, tragically, it crucified the One who had exalted it and raised it up to Heaven. Because they crucified Him, it suffered this devastation in the years 70 and 71, as we know from history, at the hands of the Roman general Titus, who leveled everything. If we move swiftly through the history and come to a more joyful time, we reach the days of Constantine the Great. He was the first to grant official recognition to the Christian faith, bestowing privileges and freedom upon Christians, and so forth. They then found support, and from that time onward Jerusalem began to flourish again.

It is recorded that in the year 326 his mother, Saint Helen, erected two churches, one on the Mount of Olives and another in Bethlehem. Julian wished to rebuild the Temple of Solomon, but God did not will it. Here we find confirmation of what I said earlier: God must also will a thing. Even when wicked people are involved, God must will it. Julian wished to restore the Temple without God's will and without seeking God's counsel. A tremendous earthquake occurred, and fire burst forth wherever the workers' pickaxes struck the ground. They were forced to abandon the attempt because God did not consent to the rebuilding of the Temple. And, as you know, it has remained in that condition and under that judgment to this day. Then, if one passes quickly over the subsequent events,

If we follow the course of events, we find Jerusalem divided in 1948, with some parts held by the Jews, others by the Jordanians, and so forth. Then, in 1967, the Old City of Jerusalem was forcibly taken by the Jews as well, and today it remains under Jewish control. This city has many entrances, many gates, as I have told you. There are about eight, though I may have overlooked one. Forgive me; I am only a pilgrim and have not studied these matters deeply. In any case, one is called the Gate of David, and another the New Gate, for those who wish to learn these things. Another is called the Damascus Gate, because it opens in that direction. Another is called Herod’s Gate.

Another is called the Gate of Gethsemane, or Saint Stephen’s Gate, because when we go out through it, it leads both toward Gethsemane and toward the place of Saint Stephen’s martyrdom. Another is called the Golden Gate. It remains closed to this day, and I will speak about it later. Another is called the Gate of the Africans, and another the Gate of Holy Zion. Through all these gates one enters the city, each from a different direction. Later, as we proceed through the slides, I will show you this closed gate, the so-called Golden Gate, to which the Jews also attach great importance. I have been told that when all their leaders came down in 1967, including Dayan, they went there and venerated it. It stands in the wall enclosing an area of about thirty-seven acres.

At the Temple of Solomon there are two adjoining gates, both sealed shut. One is called the Gate of Mercy and the other the Gate of Repentance. The Jews attach great importance to this closed gate. They say that it will open and that Christ will enter through it at His Second Coming. They do not believe in His first coming; how they believe in the second, I do not know. In any case, this is the gate through which our Most Holy Theotokos passed, like a three-year-old heifer, when she entered the Holy of Holies. This is the gate through which Christ passed at the age of twelve when He entered the Temple. This is the gate through which Christ entered Jerusalem in triumph on Palm Sunday. And this is also the gate through which—

—Emperor Heraclius carried the Precious Cross, if you remember, and brought it to Golgotha after it had been taken away. That was in the year 629. They call it the Gate of Repentance and Mercy. That is the name they have given it, and it remains closed. What will happen, I do not know. I will show it to you later. As for everything contained within this city, God alone knows. What can I tell you? We are speaking now about one church, yet the whole surrounding area is filled with holy things. Wherever you set foot, you will find something. If you go down toward the Kidron Valley, you will find the tomb of our Most Holy Theotokos. A little farther on, you will see a small shrine marking the place where the hands were cut off from the man who tried to throw her from her funeral bier.

Farther down, if you go a little beyond that, you will find the place called the Pater Noster; the place where Christ was betrayed by the kiss of Judas, and where He struggled in prayer about a stone’s throw from His disciples, as the Evangelists tell us. There, on the night of Great and Holy Thursday, His sweat fell like drops of blood. In what order could anyone recount all these things? There is the place where our Most Holy Theotokos was born. There is also the place where the mother of our Most Holy Theotokos was born.

Indeed, in a church called Saydnaya there is an icon of the mother of our Most Holy Theotokos, and when you see her, she looks exactly like the Theotokos. I mean the mother of the mother of our Most Holy Theotokos—forgive me—the mother of Saint Anna, who was also called Mariam. At the place where the Lord stood when He was taken up in the Ascension, His footprint remains. There is also a footprint from when He entered the Temple at the age of twelve: in the Church of Saint Spyridon, the imprint of His left foot can still be seen—

—the foot with which He stepped into the Temple at the age of twelve. Within the Chapel of Saints Constantine and Helen, which belongs to the Patriarchate and where the brotherhood worships, there is also a chapel dedicated to Saint Thekla. If we go up from there to the Great Church of the Most Holy Theotokos, we will see still more. First of all, we will find there the relics of a Turkish emir who cried out, ‘This is the true God!’ What could you seek there and not find? Wherever you tread is holy. You must be afraid even to set your foot down, lest you tread upon something sacred. God Himself walked there. There the devil does not tread upon the ground; he treads upon people’s shoulders, because Christ trod upon that ground. That is why people there endure so many temptations. That is why many clergy there come under attack. Satan is upon their backs. For this reason, we must treat these matters as our own concern. And our prayers—

—guard them, if we truly believe that one day we shall give an account, because this great inheritance carries a correspondingly great responsibility. This matter will not simply pass without consequence. Nor is it accidental that, even if late, we are learning about the events that take place there and the realities that exist there, to which we have still paid no attention. When someone finally reaches the church, his legs truly tremble. Two entrances lead toward it. You pass through the Holy Courtyard. Something very moving takes place there: the Washing of the Feet. The Patriarch girds himself with a towel, as Christ did, and washes the feet of twelve archimandrites in remembrance of Christ’s humility.

Truly, one should reflect upon what takes place there. The whole surrounding area is filled with both Orthodox and non-Orthodox shrines. I shall tell you briefly. First, you encounter the Monastery of Abraham, named for Abraham’s sacrifice, which I will show you later. There is also an Armenian chapel, a Coptic chapel, and a chapel of Saint Mary of Egypt. There is another chapel belonging to the Latins. There is the Church of Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, the Church of the Myrrh-bearing Women, and the Church of the Forty Martyrs. There is also the Gethsemane dependency, from which they take the Epitaphios of our Most Holy Theotokos and carry it—

—down to her tomb. It remains there for nine days, and then they bring it back. On that day, it is like another Great and Holy Friday. What especially rebukes us is that even the non-Orthodox and the Arabs, before our Most Holy Theotokos—

—tremble with awe and show her reverence. They raise their hands and follow the procession, just as people do on Great and Holy Friday. When you reach the door of the church, everything changes. A different spirit takes hold of you there. There were once two doors. One has been sealed up, and now people enter and leave through the other. If someone could see through the closed one, he would see Golgotha above it. But it has been sealed. This is the gate through which Saint Mary of Egypt, still a sinner at that time, could see the Cross but was unable to enter. Then she entreated our Most Holy Theotokos, who interceded for her before Christ, and she was able to pass through. She venerated the Cross, changed her life, and departed for the desert; you know the rest of her story. Our Holy Church commemorates her on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent as a reminder to every person: no matter how many sins one may have, one must never say—

—that there is no hope because one is a sinner. There is still a way forward, provided there is metanoia, true repentance. So there is one doorway through which people both enter and leave, with two large leaves. Above them are inscriptions and symbolic images. Listen. One inscription, written in Arabic on the right-hand leaf as we face it, says: ‘Receive the desire of your heart, O pilgrim. Enter into the joy of your Lord, into the radiant Heaven.’ Farther down it says: ‘Mother of the Churches, dwelling place of God.’ This is the spirit in which you must enter, not simply as a tourist. On the left-hand leaf is this exhortation: ‘Enter, O strangers, into the courts of the Lord, into the tomb of Life.’

‘The tabernacle in which grace dwells, the holy dwelling place where the Holy and Blessed Light abounds.’ Above this there is a sculpted band. From right to left it depicts the Mystical Supper, the Washing of the Feet, the Entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, and the Raising of Lazarus. Before I continue, let us remain at the doorway. I will show it to you later. There are three columns on one side and three on the other. Among the three columns on our left, the middle one is split and somewhat blackened. Something happened there for the sake of us Orthodox Christians. And I do not think it was by chance that the founders of this association were inspired—

—to hold their celebration on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, because everything we are discussing concerns Orthodoxy. It is not enough for a person to believe in his own way. Many people believe, but if they are asked what they believe in, some will tell you they believe in God. Others will say they believe in a higher power. Others, in a supreme being. Still others will say they believe in Christ. Yes, but in which Christ? The Christ of the Protestants? The Christ of the Catholics? The Christ of the Armenians? Which Christ? It is not enough to believe in Christ however you please. A person must believe in that Christ whom the angel proclaimed to the Myrrh-bearing Women: ‘Whom do you seek? Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified? He is not here.’ Do you believe in Him, the crucified—

—Nazarene who is not here? Then you are Orthodox. Now go forward and live accordingly, because we forget these things. That is why we see and hear—even as we heard only a few days ago—that people deeply involved in Church affairs, who ought to understand these matters, do not stand as firmly as they should in questions of faith and Orthodoxy. At that gate, then, the following event took place. In 1579, according to tradition, the Armenian Patriarch bribed the Turkish governor, who shut our Patriarch outside and permitted the Armenian Patriarch to receive the Holy Fire. Our Patriarch remained outside in the courtyard with the people, while the Armenian Patriarch was inside to receive the Fire. The man imagined that he could obtain the Fire, as though there were some match hidden there that he could simply take. You may take it—if it is given to you.

It will be given to you if the necessary conditions are present. When Christ asked, as we read in the sixteenth chapter of Matthew, ‘Who do people say that I am? You go out into the marketplace and know what people are saying—who do they take Me to be?’ they answered, ‘Some say Elijah, others Jeremiah, and others one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ He said, ‘who do you say that I am? That is what the world says; but you, Peter, the one most simple in heart?’ ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.’ ‘Why am I blessed, Lord?’ ‘Because flesh and blood have not revealed this to you.’ You did not say these things by yourself. My Father revealed them. This is Christ. The Armenian Patriarch likewise imagined that he could find a match somewhere and obtain the Fire himself. Why should he not receive it when his turn came? But where does Christ give it? And when Christ does not bestow grace or place His signature upon something, who can carry forward anything that Christ has not endorsed?

For we do not merely have faith. If someone asks me, ‘Do you believe, Panagopoulos?’ I will answer, ‘No.’ ‘Then are you an unbeliever?’ What can I say? I know; I do not merely believe. Faith concerns things we do not know: ‘the evidence of things not seen,’ as Paul says. But I know. When I go there and kneel on that place where some young tourist in very short shorts has been sitting—a place exposed to dampness, wind, and dust—and I kneel, kiss it, and it gives forth a wondrous fragrance, what can anyone say to me then? Can anyone tell me that this is not the place where Christ split the column and gave the Fire to the Orthodox Patriarch, and the people received it? Then the Turkish emir cried out from above, ‘This is the true God!’

One detail: what did this man do? The story says that this Turk made three bounds and struck the ground, saying, ‘Thus may they be driven into the eyes of those who do not believe that the Holy Fire is true and holy.’ Then he cried out again, opened by himself the door he had been stationed to guard against our people, went inside, and proclaimed to them, ‘The faith of the Orthodox Christians alone is the true faith.’ The Sultan then issued a firman and sent it to the Patriarch of that time, Sophronios, who was on the Mount of Olives, declaring that from then onward only the Greek Patriarch would have the right to receive the Fire. This continues to the present day. All the other non-Orthodox receive it from us—the Copts, the Armenians, and the Syrians—with the exception of the Catholics.

The Catholics kindle their own fire. They do not receive it from us. Even when Pascha falls on the same day for us both, they do not receive the Fire from us; they kindle their own. These things, then, are a rebuke to us, and we must take them seriously. Unfortunately, as you know, although everything there speaks of Greece and of the Greek people—for Christ loved the Greek nation, yet He openly expressed joy only when Greeks came to Him and uttered those beautiful words, ‘Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.’ And you also know what else He said: ‘The kingdom will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruits.’ It is a great privilege, a great inheritance, and a weighty gift. Woe to us if we do not prove faithful to it.

Unfortunately, our leaders do not deign to go there and see these Holy Places. I recently learned that our former queen, Frederica, went to Mount Sinai and venerated at Saint Catherine’s Monastery. They say she made so many prostrations that the elders there told her they were not good for her health. She even said, ‘I am Orthodox, and people accuse me unjustly.’ She traveled there aboard the personal aircraft of the Egyptian—what do we call him?—the Prime Minister. I also learned from the newspapers that the wife of our President, Mr. Tsatsos, intended to go there, accompanied by the Archbishop of Sinai. I do not know whether she did. I hope she did. May she go with God’s blessing. But our other leaders do not go; they do not deign to.

Americans walk through these places. They do. Europeans and other foreigners visit them too, people of other confessions who do not grasp their meaning and look down upon them merely as archaeology. Yet we, who have so many things there that speak of our Greece and the Greek language, pay no attention to them. Let me tell you just this: Gadara, which the Gospel mentions, was called the Athens of Syria. And there too, at Gerasa—Gadara and Gerasa, as it says—there are beautiful things, altars, and much else. There are dedicatory inscriptions on stone columns, written in Greek, which survive to this day. Unfortunately, we pay no attention to these things. Christ labored for the Jews, but they did not stand by Him and did not benefit, and so He gave these things to the Greeks.

History records that Hadrian sent Rufus to Jerusalem and, “after he had annihilated them and reduced the city to utter desolation, he commanded the Greeks to occupy it; and by a formal written decree, he ordered that the Jews should no longer even set eyes upon the soil of their native land.” They were not permitted to see it even from afar. Hadrian enacted such a law. During the fourth century, among the many visitors who came were Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, Saint Gregory Nazianzen, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, and Saint Epiphanius. Saint Epiphanius went to Jerusalem twice. And how many monks and bishops went there? Jerome as well.

There was Eutropia, the widow of Maximinus; descendants of the Gracchi; Paula the Patrician; Melania the Roman; the renowned Evagrius; and John. Then there were the founders of the Great Cave Monastery, Saint Pelagia of Alexandria, the holy Porphyrios from Thessalonica, and John, who was ordained Bishop of Gaza. The first person of royal rank to go down to Jerusalem was Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor. She came, as the historian Sozomen says, “to pray and to visit the sacred places there.” Later, the emperor also spoke to his mother about going, and indeed she went. But the most moving and wondrous visit—and with this I am coming to a close—was that of Emperor Theodosius the Great.

The central point is this: Theodosius the Great put on the clothing of a private citizen—notice this—and went to Jerusalem. He made his way to the church and knocked at the door of the holy Resurrection of Christ, and then entered. Although every oil lamp had been extinguished, wonder of wonders, they all lit by themselves. Astonished by what had happened, the sacristan reported the miracle to the Patriarch. The blessed Patriarch recognized the emperor and praised his virtue. There, I do not know whether you are aware, everyone must enter with the head uncovered. The imperial diadems had to come off.

The crown of the Crucified Christ reigns supreme over the crowns of all men, whoever they may be. One more thing, and I shall finish. In a manuscript belonging to a holy monastery on the Holy Mountain—manuscript 171 of the Iviron Monastery—the following is said about Saint Helena’s efforts to find the Precious Cross. First, she summoned a thousand men whom the people had identified as learned. From them she selected five hundred and questioned them about the place where the Precious Cross lay hidden. She called them and asked, “Where is it?” They brought forward a thousand, and she chose five hundred. But they all responded with a vehement denial: “We do not know.” She then selected seven of the five hundred and dismissed the others. One of the seven was named Judas. But these seven also remained firm in their denial: “We do not know.” The next day she summoned them again...

...to punish them. The seven, however, had agreed that if force were used, six of them would withdraw and they would all point to Judas as the one who knew. And that is what happened. “He knows—he does. We do not know.” But Judas, even when left alone, continued to deny it: “I do not know.” Saint Helena had a fire kindled to threaten him, but the Jew still would not confess. Then she had him lowered into a cistern. He began to be afraid and promised to reveal what he knew, provided that he was set free. After coming out of the cistern, he asked for a place where he could pray. He went to a certain place and prayed, asking that, if it were possible, smoke should rise from the spot where the Cross lay, so that he might believe in Christ.

Indeed, to give him assurance, smoke rose from the place, and he believed. He was first baptized, and then he pointed out the location and recounted the miracle. The remarkable thing is that a Judas sought out the Cross, and a Judas revealed the Cross. Empress Eudocia, the wife of Theodosius the Younger, came to Jerusalem and founded the Monastery of Saint Stephen. The empress was from Athens and had been named Athenais. She was baptized in the Church of Saint Stephen in Constantinople and renamed Eudocia. When she came to Jerusalem, she addressed the Greek people most eloquently, speaking those well-known words: “I am proud to be of your race and blood.” And there is much that I have not told you.

I have told you scarcely one ten-thousandth of all that is there—just a few words together with everything else, so that we might awaken a little interest in those who desire and are able to go and see these things. I may tell you that sugar is sweet, but unless you put a little in your mouth, you will not know. However much I may tell you that honey is sweet, unless you taste a fingerful, you will not know what honey is. You must go there. You will suffer hardships. You will say, “Cursed be the hour when I came.” Everything will seem to be against you. Yet when you board the airplane to leave, you will say, “When will I come back?” Your body departs, but your soul remains there. I speak to you from personal experience. I do not wish to take any more of your time or impose upon your love. Through the prayers of the holy Exarch and the Holy Fathers, I pray that you may be counted worthy to see clearly—most radiantly—those things of which we now speak here only in outline...

...and may the grace of the Holy Sepulchre and of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all, with our petitions, with our homeland, and with our Church. We are a great people, beloved; believe this. God has blessed us, not because we deserve it. Why He has blessed us, He alone knows. I cannot take that right away from my God. Treasure this blessing and preserve it in humility. There is no other way for you to withstand evil, sin, and all this unbelief. Prayer is the greatest gift that can both be offered and received. This is my heartfelt prayer. Amen.
