Summary

The speaker argues that Orthodox Christians must understand, proclaim, and defend the Holy Places as witnesses to Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. The lecture traces Jerusalem’s sacred and historical significance, emphasizing it as the city of Christ’s saving work, Pentecost, and the Church’s mission to the world. The concluding appeal warns that the Brotherhood lacks younger members and urges Orthodox Christians, especially Greeks, to preserve the spiritual inheritance entrusted to them.

Your Eminence, reverend fathers, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. By the grace of God, I have once again been invited to offer something of what I gained as a pilgrim to the Holy Places, where God granted me the grace to go for three consecutive years. When I was invited here three years ago to contribute something to this effort, I said that I did not feel at ease, because although for so many years, by the grace of the Lord, I had served the Word of God, I had never spoken about these matters.

Unique things are taking place around the Holy Places and Orthodoxy. And so, this evening I have once again been invited to say a few words. The subject, as you heard, is the responsibility that all who call themselves Christians bear toward these Holy Places. I do not believe it is apart from the Holy Spirit that this event is being held on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, because it gives each speaker an opportunity, in this sense, to remind Orthodox Christians in general of this sacred cause.

At the same time, it is also their task to enlighten others about how the cause of Christianity began with one man and came to where it is today. Each of us, then, has an obligation, from his own position in life, to pass on these truths, so that a person’s faith may be strengthened.

And so that others too, if they wish, may find their way. First of all, my dear friends, we must understand that not every kind of faith saves. If you approach people and ask whether they believe, they will tell you that they do. If you ask what they believe in, they may say, “I believe in fate. Surely, something must exist.” If you approach another group, they will tell you, “Of course I believe.” “What do you believe in?” “I believe in a higher power. Something must exist.” Approach yet another group and they will tell you, “I believe in God.” You see, the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in Jehovah. Others even believe in Christ. But how do they believe in this Christ?

Do they believe in Him as the Son of God, as the One who became man? Do they believe in Him as buried and risen? How do they believe in Him? They believe in Him merely as a man, as a reformer, as a kind of Christian socialist, as some call Him today, or I do not know what else. The question, then, is not simply how a person believes, but what a person must believe. When Christ called His disciples together and spoke with them, He said, “You who go about among the people, what do you hear? Who do they say that I am?” They answered, “Some say You are Jeremiah, others the Prophet Elijah, and others John the Forerunner. They regard You as one of the prophets.” “Very well, that is what the world says. But who do you say that I am?” Peter immediately answered, “You are the Son of the living God.”

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.” What you said did not come from you; it came from the Father who created you. The world has many opinions about faith. But does it have the Orthodox faith? That is the question. Many things are said about faith, but do we possess the true faith? Someone may then ask, “What are we to believe? In whom are we to believe?” You must believe in the One of whom the Angel spoke to the Myrrh-bearing Women: “Whom do you seek here? Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene? He is not here.” This is the One you must come to know and believe in: Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified and buried,

and who rose from the dead. You must come to know Him—what He did, what He preached, and where He is. If everyone believes in his own way, not all roads lead to Rome. There are many people who believe in their own way. We Orthodox must point people to the truth about the Nazarene who was crucified, buried, and risen. And do you know where? In the Holy City. The place is there; the tomb from which these words were proclaimed is there. Yet most of the world knows nothing about it, either firsthand or even from a distance. Many could have gone there, though only a few have; nor have they taken care to learn about it. People learn so many other things,

things that change every day, and they follow every new development. Yet they have no interest in learning about this permanent, timeless, and unique reality, which is for their good both now and eternally. To some degree, therefore, each person is responsible for paying attention to it. So I take this opportunity, my dear friends, to tell you that there in the Holy City is a tomb—the only tomb of the founder of a Church—that is empty. Notice the wording: it is empty. All the other tombs of the founders of the so-called religions—which, in my view, are merely religious systems, for there is only one true religion—belong to separate beliefs.

The tombs of the others, I say, are sealed, closed, and full; they hold their founders captive. Only the one unique Founder, God who became man, had the power to break the bonds of death, escape the tomb, and leave it empty as a witness after so many centuries. For us, this is a great advantage. Christ gave it to us so that we might possess it and use it rightly. There are many modern-day Thomases who now demand proof, because although, as you know, faith comes by hearing, we can also pass it on through what is seen with the eyes.

“I will believe if I see. If I do not see, I will not believe.”

Someone may ask: when a person sees, is it still faith? It is knowledge, and knowledge cannot be disputed. Christ says to Thomas, “Because you have seen Me, Thomas, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Once you see, it becomes knowledge. Nevertheless, even today the Lord condescends to us and leaves His side open. The tomb of our Lord is like that side, a unique side to which every unbeliever may go, put in his finger, and become not unbelieving but believing. A person would understand and appreciate this, and would thank Christ a thousand times an hour, if he knew how few the Orthodox are there compared with the others, compared with those other mighty powers:

the Muslims, the Jews, the Catholics, and the rest. They are mighty powers in wealth and numbers, in propaganda and audacity. If a person knew that the Orthodox are only one in a hundred, he would say, “My God, how do these places still remain ours and continue to be called Greek? How do one hundred and eleven men in cassocks preserve all that heritage there? One hundred and eleven! What am I doing? What am I offering in this situation?” People do not know these things. And we who are gathered here at this hour may also be believing merely in our own way.

I would like us to reconsider. Not every kind of faith saves. Christ said, “I am the way.” He did not say, “I am a way,” one way among many. “I am the Light.” He did not say, “I am a light,” but the one and only Light. “I am the life.” Those definite articles make my faith exclusive. “I am the true vine,” because other vines will appear and others will offer them—newer teachers led astray by pride, self-interest, and Satan. There is one faith and one religion: the Orthodox faith, which also withstands the test of history. If a believer wishes to trace the Orthodox Church—or if any Orthodox Christian wishes to follow it back—he will reach the Upper Room, where Pentecost of the Holy Spirit took place. But if anyone outside Orthodoxy wishes to trace his own history and present it to us,

he will end up in the arms of a man. Papism will end with a pope, Protestantism with Luther, Millennialism with Russell, Jehovah’s Witness teaching with Russell, Mohammedanism with Mohammed, and so on. Only in the Orthodox Church does the believer end up in the arms of Christ—Jesus the Crucified—who, through His life on earth, brought about man’s reconciliation with God. It was not God who needed to be reconciled with man, because, according to the divine John Chrysostom, God was never at enmity with us. People do not know these things. Even those who call themselves Christians, who make the sign of the Cross and go to Church, who speak of “Christ” and say, “Christ is risen,” do not know these details. There, then, is the center.

It is called the Holy City. If only people knew about this Holy City! Consider Jerusalem. I had the opportunity to examine what people say about the origin of its name, and I found the following: long ago, when the city was first founded, it was called Salem, which means peace. Later it was called Jebus, after the tribe of the Jebusites, who were Canaanites. Then Herodotus of Halicarnassus, the father of history, called it Cadytis, meaning “great city.” After that it was called the City of David, as we know from the texts of the Church.

They call it “the City of David.” Today, however, it is called Jerusalem. Evidently, the name combines Salem and Jebus. The letter beta became rho, and Jebus became Jerus—Jeru-salem. It is therefore, plainly, the city from which peace went forth, beginning with what was given through the Apostles, in accordance with the words of Christ that we read in the Acts of the Apostles. If you remember, He gave them this command: “Remain here until you receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Here, then, is the source of peace. Everything begins here.

Let me tell you something else as well. At another time, God Himself called this city His own. And if we are children of God, we must love His city. If we are children of God, we must love the city and all that is within it. We must care about what is happening there and ask what we, as children of God, can offer toward the spiritual inheritance found there. To the north, near Galilee, on a height, there is a place called Skopos, known in Hebrew as Safa. There stands a memorial recalling the arrival of Alexander the Great.

What is the story? When Alexander the Great went to Jerusalem, the city surrendered to him; its people neither resisted nor fought. The high priest Jaddua came out and gave him the keys of the city so that he might enter. That evening, when the banquet celebrating the victory over the city was held, Parmenion, his aide-de-camp, is said to have refused to sit at the table because he was angry. Alexander saw that his aide had not taken his place and demanded an explanation: “What is the meaning of this behavior?” He replied, “My behavior is justified. Can I endure seeing you, O king—you who have ridden here on horseback from I do not know how far away—dismount

and bow down before a priest? This is utter foolishness.” Alexander replied, “If you knew what God told me yesterday afternoon about this city, you would have done the same, and perhaps even more.” He continued, “God told me, ‘This city is Mine, and you shall not fight against it. Its keys will be given to you.’” God had said the same to the high priest, who came out to meet Alexander the Great and gave him the keys. From this account too, we receive the message: “This city is Mine.” What was God foreseeing? Looking back, we can see what He foresaw. Therefore, no one can remain indifferent toward the city of Christ, the city of God. For in this city, as

the divine John Chrysostom says, “in a single moment the ancient tyranny of the devil was overthrown.” It was overthrown there, on Golgotha. There death itself was abolished. In this city sin was destroyed. In this city the curse was broken. Paradise was opened. Human beings were once again joined with the angels. The God of peace made peace between the things above and those upon the earth. Everything happened there. So, Christian, what do you know about this place, where so much was accomplished for your sake? And what are you doing in response to these obligations before God, or in response to all those who, throughout the centuries, offered their blood and their labor?

and sweat to preserve them? Are we simply to flatter ourselves that we possess the Holy Places—to receive so great an inheritance without offering sacrifice, labor, money, or anything at all? This is a responsibility. You know, moreover, that according to the accepted account, from the year 62, beginning with James, the first bishop, until 422, forty-two bishops served there. From about 422, when it became a Patriarchate, until today, ninety-six Patriarchs have served. This is something great and a great honor for us; yet we want merely to stand by and watch all these things.

In that place a person can test his faith: Am I in the truth, or am I not? Other confessions are present there as well. There are Catholics, Armenians, Abyssinians, Copts, Protestants, Jews, Muslims—everyone is there. And there is a touchstone there, which I will show you later, God willing: the Most Holy Sepulchre and the light of the Resurrection, which, as everyone knows, is granted only to the Orthodox. Christ does not show partiality; He simply points out the truth to those who are willing to see it. Mr. Lypiris, let me tell you one aspect of this whole matter.

Although the Abyssinian, the Copt, and the Armenian all see it—and indeed the Armenian Patriarch enters the Holy Edicule and watches our own representative of the Patriarch, or the Patriarch himself, receive from Christ the light of the Resurrection—he still remains in heresy. What causes this? A domineering spirit, the close companion of pride. He does not even condescend to make a metanoia, a bow of repentance. The others make a metanoia before our Patriarch. They receive his blessing to prepare themselves, so that they too may go and witness the giving of the Holy Fire. The Catholics merely circle around, in their own manner, which I do not wish to describe, out of jealousy,

holding their candles as though to say, “Christ has appeared to everyone. See that you receive the light, for He needs no one.” There a person examines and checks his faith. He looks at the clock of his faith to see whether it is keeping the right time. Ask about it and go there. Ask those who have gone and seen it for themselves, and take care that your faith is right. In view, then, of all our obligations; in view of what God has left there as an inheritance to us Orthodox; in view of those who came before us and, I repeat, gave sweat, toil, and blood to preserve it; and even in view of Christ’s forbearance toward us—for because of our sins, we did not deserve to possess even these things—there has, of course, been a great decimation

of the holy shrines, unfortunately. Muslims possess some of them, and others possess others. We do not possess them all. This has happened because of our sins. In view of these obligations, each of us must take a stand. Someone might say to me, “Mr. Panagopoulos, you know more because you have studied a little and have seen these things. What is needed?” First, blood is needed. “What do you mean? Are we going to give a blood transfusion?” Yes, we are going to give a transfusion. Blood is needed—people are needed. The cassock is needed. But not only the cassock; even the humblest servant is needed. Let me tell you this: when we went there, some young women in our group worked for three or four days in the Church of the Resurrection, cleaning various areas and objects. They simply do not have enough people to clean them.

Manual service is needed. You cannot become a clergyman; you cannot become a bishop; you cannot become a Patriarch. Can you become nothing else? Are Patriarchs the only people needed there? Is no supporting help required? We know how this works: before a single bullet can be fired at the front, people must labor for years behind the lines to manufacture that bullet. In the same way, for the Patriarch, the Archimandrite, the abbot, the sacristan, or whoever else to remain at his post, other people are needed. Why do we sit here and wander about? Why have I not thought, why have you not thought, why have we not thought of offering one month of service there? I will go to Jerusalem for one month to work. I will offer my service at Gethsemane, where one exhausted soul is wearing himself out. I will offer my service at the Most Holy Sepulchre, where one exhausted soul is wearing himself out. Why can I not do it? I can.

Who among us has ever thought of giving a child—or giving himself—to the Most Holy Sepulchre? What a great honor it would be to serve as a guardian of Christ’s Tomb! I will show you later a guardian of the Most Holy Sepulchre, whose very outward appearance speaks for him. Yes, today we campaign against the cassock, and you know the warfare being waged. But if I am Orthodox, I must have discernment and beseech God: “My God, do You not see even one child from my own household? My God, how can I help another child become a clergyman in the Church and advance as far as Your higher school in Jerusalem, in those Holy Places?” Can this not be done? This, then, is one offering. We must now turn again to the different offerings. The second is money.

Money gives things wings. I heard a woman behind me speaking, and she said, “Could these words of Panagopoulos not be given wings and carried throughout the world?” I heard her, turned around, and said, “You have the wings in your handbag. Give these words wings and let them go. Here are books, here are cassette tapes—and here is the need for money. Give them wings, then. The money is in your pocket. Let them fly.” Yes, this is not an age in which the world is fed with manna. It is an age in which it is fed with sweat. Have you offered anything? Have you considered it an honor to send even a small coin there? Earlier you heard a budget or financial report here. These are meager amounts: fifty, one hundred, two hundred, three hundred thousand.

Whether it is three hundred, four hundred, five hundred thousand, one million, or ten million today—what is it? It is nothing. If the Orthodox truly understood and kept—not even a money box, but simply a cup set aside with the words “Holy Places” written on it—and put one small coin into it each day, we could help those people. The finest and largest vehicle, with the best driver, cannot move without fuel. Money is the fuel. Even Christ Himself was served from the possessions of the women who followed Him. Do not be deceived, you who are deluded, imagining that everything will be done miraculously. No! He awaits our sacrifices. Take this seriously, therefore. Set up a money box for the Holy Places. Gather a coin or two. You see events being held here; you see associations of the Most Holy Sepulchre; you see the people involved. Approach them, so that we may help this work.

I will tell you one thing that will grieve your heart. In Samaria stands the Church of Saint Photini. Since 1912 it has been built only as high as the windows, and there it remains. Hellenism, where are you? If you gave one drachma a year, you could complete it and put a roof over it. Others may take it from us. To our shame! In the place where the woman who had once been in darkness saw the light and became Saint Photini, shall that place once again become foreign to us? To our shame! I tell you, let us become preachers and spread this message, so that savings may be gathered and we may support the cause of the Holy Places, because others are buying them away from us with money—

various heretics. And now the third and final offering, and with this I will conclude. You have no blood to give—no person, no human being, not yourself? You have no money to give? Surely you have prayer to offer. It costs nothing; it requires neither blood nor money. It costs nothing. Tell me, then: Have you ever prayed for the Holy Places? Have you ever said, “Remember, O Lord, the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre. Remember, O Lord, the Brotherhood of Sinai. Remember, O Lord, the Holy Mountain that bears Your name. Remember, O Lord, our Patriarchates, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate”? What have you ever said, O Orthodox Christian? Saint Anthony, in the desert, upheld the inhabited world by his prayers.

What does prayer mean? It covers everything, obtains everything, and can accomplish everything. Write, then, on your paper; write in your prayer book; write into your spiritual struggle: “And for the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre, and for all those who labor blamelessly for others.” They offer themselves without personal gain, both to enlighten and to help, so that these places may be supported and preserved. For the touchstone is there. There Judaism will be shattered; there Islam, Buddhism, Papism, and the papal spirit will be shattered. Before this empty Tomb of Christ, before this Most Holy Light, all these things will be shattered. And one day Orthodoxy will shine forth again. But if we do not commit ourselves and attend to these three things—to the threefold offering I have described: blood, money, and prayer—

then we must bow our heads and admit that we are of no account. And I pray, through the prayers of His Grace the Bishop and of the Fathers, that this may not happen to us, but that we may remain faithful to the lot entrusted to us. And may Christ our God, together with the Most Holy Theotokos and the Saints there, bestow upon each of us what is fitting and preserve us from the devices of Satan.

Thank you.

Ecclesiastical Exarch in Greece: First, I express my profound gratitude to the President of the Greek Association of the Most Holy Sepulchre and to the Board of Directors, which organized this festal event in support of the Most Holy Sepulchre. I likewise offer my heartfelt thanks to today’s speaker, the honorable Mr. Panagopoulos, who has so vividly set before us the responsibility we must bear as Orthodox Christians, and especially as Greeks. From the time the first Church was founded by our Lord in the Holy City of Jerusalem, it was Greeks who fostered the Most Holy Shrines and were appointed as their guardians. Therefore, we who live in Jerusalem do not feel that we are in a foreign country, but in a part of our beloved homeland. Like the Monastery of Sinai, it is the last bastion of Hellenism in a foreign land. Mr. Panagopoulos has described very well our tremendous need for people. Every day our numbers diminish.

Our elders die, but no new blood enters the bosom of the sacred Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre. It will be an eternal disgrace, my brethren, if we lose this sacred inheritance from our Fathers, who struggled through many adversities to preserve as firmly Greek that which is called the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Holy Places. Therefore, as Ecclesiastical Exarch in Greece, I make a fervent appeal to every one of you. If a person does not himself have a child to offer, let him approach his neighbor, so that we may preserve this inheritance.

Let us preserve it through the ages, unharmed and intact in every respect, just as we received it. Besides the appeal I am making at this moment from this platform, I have also received by telephone the prayers and blessings of His Most Divine Beatitude, our venerable Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem, Benedict, for the President, the members, and all of you who willingly came to attend this festal event. From the depths of my heart, I pray that the grace and blessing of the Most Holy Sepulchre

may be with us all.

Δε και άλλοι, αν θέλουν να βρουν το δρόμο τους. Θα πρέπει να γνωρίζουμε πρώτον, αγαπητοί μου, ότι οποιαδήποτε πίστη δεν σώζει. Εάν πλησιάσετε τους ανθρώπους και τους ερωτήσετε αν πιστεύουν, θα σας πούνε ότι πιστεύουν. Αν τους ρωτήσετε σε τι πιστεύουν, «Πιστεύω σε ένα μοιραίο. Βέβαια, κάτι υπάρχει». Αν πλησιάσετε μια άλλη μερίδα, θα σας πούνε «Βέβαια, πιστεύω». «Σε τι πιστεύεις;» «Πιστεύω σε μια ανώτερη δύναμη. Δεν μπορεί, κάτι υπάρχει». Πλησιάσετε σε άλλη μερίδα, θα σου πει ότι «Πιστεύω στον Θεό». Βλέπε, οι Ιεχωβάδες πιστεύουν στον Ιεχωβά. Άλλοι πιστεύουν και σε αυτόν τον Χριστό. Αλλά αυτόν τον Χριστό πώς τον πιστεύουνε;
