Summary
Because all people sin after Baptism, the Church offers the merciful sacrament of repentance and confession to restore the soul’s purity. John the Baptist received those who confessed their sins, and the risen Christ entrusted His apostles with the authority to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit. No sin is beyond God’s forgiveness when it is truly repented of and confessed, for falling is human but remaining willingly in sin is satanic.

Reverend Fathers and beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, during these days that we have been together, as most of you know, we have been trying to offer an answer and a clarification for all of us who have been baptized: we must take care to preserve the purity of our souls after Baptism. “It is impossible for a person to live and not sin,” our Holy Church says. Christ alone is without sin. We sin, and this is something that should concern us every day: whether, and to what extent, we are preserving the purity of our Baptism.
Unfortunately, as long as we live on this earth, we sin. But how is the matter of sin set right after Baptism? Here again, our Church has provided for us what Saint Isaac the Syrian calls a merciful Mystery. It is the Mystery of metanoia—repentance—and confession. For two evenings we have tried to show that we are all sinners, some to a lesser degree and others to a greater. Tonight, as far as our strength allows, we will also try to show that there is a way for this sin to be set right.
Satan, who is cunning and our constant enemy, casts a great deal of darkness over this matter. And you know, apart from a few who have understood it correctly, everyone else tries to deal with their sins in their own way. Some, of course, believe that they are good and have no need of anyone. Others acknowledge that, being human, they have sinned, but they too try to settle their sin before God in their own way. If you remember, I said in conclusion last night that there is no way for any sin to be paid off. Sins are forgiven; they are not paid off, nor are they wiped away through some other suffering. Nothing can do that. All good works...
Even if the good deeds of all the righteous, from righteous Abel to the last righteous person at the end of the ages, were credited to our account, they would not blot out a single sin. Christ has left us a particular way by which sins are blotted out. First, metanoia—repentance—is needed, and then confession. Among the many parables Christ told is one appointed for that season of katanyxis, of compunction, in the Triodion: the Parable of the Prodigal Son. In it, He showed us how a person is saved. We all need the repentance of the Prodigal Son. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, there is both repentance and the confession of that repentance.
Repentance is a decision; confession is making that decision known. No decision takes effect unless it is made known. In the parable, the word “arose” appears twice. First, “I will arise and go to my father,” and then, farther on, a second “arose,” preceded by “and”: “And he arose and went to his father.” The first “arise” is the admission: “I have not acted rightly, and because of my conduct I am suffering. I will get up and go to my father.” Up to this point, there is repentance. But what made his repentance effective was that he actually arose, went to his father, said, “I have sinned,” and spoke the words he had prepared while he was still there in the pigsty.
It is true that many people repent of the lives they have led and perhaps even weep over them, yet they have never confessed their sins. And there are also many who have confessed their sins but have never truly repented. They confess in order to obtain a prayer of absolution under false pretenses, so that they may receive Holy Communion on Great and Holy Thursday, at Pascha, or on the Dormition, but the very next day they return to their former way of life. They are like frogs that come just a little way out of the water, but at the slightest disturbance—splash!—they are back in the water again. They have not truly left it behind. Few are both truly repentant and have sincerely confessed their sins. That is the proper way. It is not enough to say, “I repent; I will not do it again.” What about what you have already done—who will pay for that? How will the debts you have incurred before the justice of God be wiped away?
“I won’t do it again.” It would be rather absurd to send your child to tell the baker, “You know, Dad said that from now on we’ll pay for what we buy; we won’t buy on credit anymore.” What would the baker say? “Tell your generous father to come and pay the outstanding bill first, and then we’ll see about the future.” Many people think that because they have stopped committing a certain sin, even though they have not confessed it, everything is now in order. From that point onward, they begin doing good works according to their own will, and they imagine that the matter has been settled. But that is not so. The main stumbling block for people is whether confession is truly necessary. Satan wages a fierce war against this Mystery. He will let a person be brokenhearted and will even let him admit his sin, but he will not let him speak it aloud in confession.
He does not let them bring it out into the open, and that is where some people stumble. He presents one excuse after another and puts obstacles in their way. Many even stop and say, “Why should I go and confess it? So that the priest will find out? So that everyone at the café will hear about it?” The enemy suggests many such things, and a person needs to be enlightened. In this small ministry of mine, I have met people who have not been to confession since childhood—not since their grandmother or their school took them when they were pupils—because such thoughts and obstacles have remained with them throughout their lives. I do not know whom I am speaking to this evening. God knows. But this much I do know to say: we must take care not to be deceived. And allow me to demonstrate from Holy Scripture, going back even to the Old Testament, not only metanoia—repentance—but confession as well.
If we want to go far back and find an early example, we must turn to the book of Leviticus. There, in the fifth chapter, God gives the people of that time an exhortation through Moses. Let me put it in simpler words. “When anyone is guilty in any of these things”—after listing a number of cases above—“he shall confess.” He is not merely to make repayment. If, for example, he has stolen something, he is not only to restore it, perhaps with an additional fourth or fifth, but first he must confess it. “He shall confess the sin he has committed, and he shall also bring to the Lord an offering for the transgression he has committed.”
Around 1,500 years before Christ, it calls for the confession of a person’s sin. What I am telling you is biblical. Let us turn to another book of the Pentateuch, the Book of Numbers, again in chapter 5, verse 7. It says: “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel: When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit, transgressing against the Lord, and that soul sins, then he shall confess the sin he has committed and shall make restitution for the wrong he has done.” As I was saying, for example, if someone has committed theft, he must confess it because he has broken the commandment, “You shall not steal,” but he must also return what he stole. That is how it is.
Someone who is paying attention might ask, “Confession—but where?” The passage does not say. So I stand before God, who is present everywhere, and speak; I stand before an icon and speak. Is that not confession on my part? Since confession is clearly required, Scripture goes on to clarify this point further. For example, do you know what happened in the Book of Joshua, chapter 7, verse 19? A military campaign took place, and they gathered a great deal of spoil. Joshua, the son of Nun, warned them beforehand, saying, “Let no one steal anything from what you have gathered.”
Have you found it?
Thank you. A wicked man had stolen something—Achan. His theft was discovered, and now they brought him before Joshua, the son of Nun. Joshua was the successor of Moses. And Joshua said to Achan, the thief: “My son, give glory now to the Lord, the God of Israel. Give glory to God and confess to Him—to God—and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide anything from me.” Confess it all to God, confess to Him—but you will tell it to me. Many people think that when they go to confession, they are telling everything to the priest, that Father will hear it. And often they try to hide certain things, so as to deceive—
to keep them from receiving Holy Communion, along with a thousand other notions that Satan puts into their heads. We must understand that although the priest is there before us, listening as we tell him everything, it is God who truly stands before us. I once heard about a demon-possessed man whom a monk asked what happens during confession. And do you know how he answered, in his own crude language? “You think,” he said, “that when you confess, you are speaking to the priest. You are not speaking to the priest. The one who hears your confession is Manolis—Emmanuel—together with Michael and Gabriel.” We understand what that means, do we not? Our Christ is there before us with the Archangels, regardless of what the priest may say to us afterward or what prayer he may read over us, since that is the ministry to which he has been appointed.
It is Christ who hears the confession, and Christ who forgives. Yet Christ does not forgive directly, but through the clergy of Christ, through the Church of Christ. I think you know this. So, in this case, we address both shortcomings. The first is this: it says that a person must confess—but where? You will be speaking to God, but I will be listening to you. Hide nothing from Him, because God knows the very things you are hiding. This, then, helps us understand that we must confess our sins to someone. Another confession found in the Old Testament, one familiar to most people even from their school years, is David’s confession before Nathan. Nathan is a prophet, and David is also a prophet.
You know, David fell into two mortal sins: adultery and premeditated murder. God sent Nathan, and Nathan, in a gentle and indirect way, helped him confess and recognize his sin. This is what he said to him: “I want you to help me with something that has happened, because I do not know how to respond. There was a very rich man who had many sheep he could slaughter for a feast with his friends. Yet he did not slaughter any of his own or use anything that belonged to him. Instead, he went and took the one little ewe lamb belonging to a poor man and made a feast of it. What should we do to this man? How should we deal with him?” David replied, “That man deserves to die.” Nathan said to him, “You are that man—the one who murdered.”
“You killed another man in order to take his wife.” David did not then say, “And who told you that? Where did you hear that?”—as we do when trying to cover our own lies. He said, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Yes, he had done it. And as soon as he admitted it, he received the answer: “The Lord also has put away your sin.” Here we see a prophet confessing to a prophet, and a prophet granting forgiveness to a prophet on God’s behalf. Not, “I forgive you,” but, “The Lord has put away your sin.” So how can anyone tell me that there is no confession before another person—that you should tell your sins to an icon, tell them to good Saint George, or tell them to the forty waves so they may carry them away? For people say all manner of things, all manner of foolishness, on this subject—anything to avoid doing what is right.
So the matter is firmly established from the Old Testament. But then, when we come to the New Testament, tell me: what did John the Forerunner do? Did he not preach repentance? Did people not come to him confessing their sins? Did he not bring them into the Jordan—the Jordan we spoke about yesterday—and keep them there as they confessed all their sins? And when Christ came, what happened? Christ entered the water immediately, Holy Scripture says. For Christ had nothing to confess. He fulfilled the type, the typological pattern, but He had nothing to confess. Therefore, confession also exists in the New Testament. It is a grave mistake for a person not to make use of this Mystery, this Mystery which—
The Mystery of repentance and confession enables us to receive the full benefit of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist as well. For in proportion to the purity for which the first Mystery prepares us, we enjoy the gifts of the second. Many people who come unprepared to Holy Communion do not receive all the gifts that flow from it. Saint Basil the Great says in his prayers that twenty-three gifts flow from Holy Communion when a person receives it—provided, however, that the proper preparation has been made. Thus, this Mystery of Mysteries is also made fruitful for us through that merciful Mystery which I mentioned earlier. Let none of us be deceived into believing that
Let none of us be deceived into thinking that we will somehow manage to put this matter in order. I repeat: if we read the Catholic Epistle of John, we find John saying, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.” “If we say”—the saint includes himself as well. But God is faithful and just, so that if we confess our sins, He forgives them. “If we confess.” Some people hide their sins and cover them up. They mention the little ones but hold back the serious ones. They do not confess openly; they do not lay bare their whole being, because Satan, even at the very last moment—even as they wait there at the place of confession—
Even as you are waiting to go into the confessional, Satan looks for something to hold back, and he brings in what we call shame. At this point I would like to tell you something I once read, so that you may learn to put shame aside. We should be ashamed when we are about to sin, not when we are about to vomit the sin out and have the depths of our soul cleansed through confession. It is said that an elder was once hearing confessions, while several people were waiting outside, as usually happens. Suddenly he interrupted the confession, rose, went out to where the others were, and said, “What are you doing over there?” They could see no one doing anything, so they thought something had happened to the priest. “You there,” he said, “the tall one—what are you doing?” Still they saw nothing.
“In the name of Jesus Christ,” he said, “you towering one, what are you doing there?” Then a tall figure appeared among the people waiting to confess, with his head bowed. “What are you? Answer in the name of Jesus Christ.” Everyone leaned closer to hear, and he replied, “I am Satan.” Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos! Satan here? Where else would Satan go—to the vineyards? This is exactly where he will come. He will try, if possible, to make us leave; and if we do not leave, he will still try to make us hold something back. Now listen to what followed. “Tell the people what you are doing here. I saw you going around and giving them something.” “I came here to give something back.” “What are you giving back?” “Something I had taken from them.” “What had you taken?” “I had taken away their shame.” “Why?” “So that they would sin.” “And what are you doing now?” “Now I am giving it back to them.” “Why?” “So that they will be ashamed to tell you their sins, and so they will remain mine.”
Therefore, let us be ashamed when we are about to sin, not when we are about to confess. For one day all these things, naked and laid bare, will be revealed before the Angels of God. Then our husband will hear what we did in secret; our wife will hear what we did in secret; and the whole world will hear what we did in secret. But by then it will be too late, because the human person will have been separated by death. The body with which we sinned will have returned to the earth, and the poor soul will be unable to do anything from beyond the grave. Take this very seriously, then, and be watchful. First of all, we must guard ourselves against sin. But if, for one reason or another, it gets hold of us, we must follow the right path, the God-given path which Christ has established in His Church. Our Christ!
He became man. He died. He was buried, and He rose again. What joy filled mankind when they encountered Him risen! “Lord, what have You brought us from Hades? What news have You brought us from Hades?” “I have brought you a way to set things right whenever, in your human weakness, you sin.” If you wish, open the twentieth chapter of John, which recounts what happened when our Christ rose and appeared that evening among the disciples in the upper room, while Thomas was absent. Do you know what He said to them and what is written there? First He said twice, “Peace be with you,” and then He told them, “As…”
“As the Father has sent Me, so I send you.” I shall soon depart, and I am sending you with all the authority I received from the Father when I came among mankind. What authority did He possess? Come with Me to the place where I healed the man who was lowered through the roof, and listen carefully to what I said. When the Jews heard Me say, “Son, your sins are forgiven you,” they were shocked and regarded it as blasphemy, because the forgiveness of sins belongs to God alone. How can this man forgive sins unless He is God? And He said to them, “Why do you reason in this way? Which is easier?”
“To say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed, and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man—“Take up your bed and go.” The man placed it on his shoulder and walked away before them all. Christ is saying: This authority which I possess to forgive sins I am not taking away with Me; I am leaving it to you. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” so that you may exercise this authority. And He breathed upon them. Why? I am not the one saying this. Here we have a first Pentecost. Pentecost had not yet come, and the Holy Spirit had not yet descended, but Christ gave them there the special grace to bind and to loose. And for what purpose did they receive the Holy Spirit? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” There is the Mystery; there is its root, its institution, and the love of God—so that even from the tomb…
He brought repentance and confession, this first Mystery. For if this Mystery were removed, no one would be saved. As Saint John Climacus says, if this Mystery of repentance and confession were taken away, no one would be saved. No human being has preserved, so to speak, the purity of his Baptism. We all stain it—by word, by deed, or in our understanding. Our Christ knew this. As David says, “He remembered that we are dust,” and so He established this merciful Mystery. Yet whenever someone becomes stained for one reason or another, Satan comes and says, “Are you not going to do it again after you confess?” He says this to hold you back and keep you from making use of the Mystery. Never do that. Never listen to that gentleman,
that master craftsman of deception. Never listen when he puts such ideas into your mind—when he keeps you down, tells you that God will not forgive you, that your sin is too great, or asks how you could possibly speak of it, and so forth. At that point the matter has passed beyond ordinary human weakness. John Chrysostom says that to fall is human. You fell; you were careless, swept away, or ignorant. To fall is human, but to remain fallen is satanic. A person who refuses to rise, who remains beneath the burden of his sins while offering various excuses, and who does not make use of this merciful Mystery of the Church, has taken the side of Satan. To persist in sin and refuse metanoia, repentance, is satanic; to fall is human. Hold fast to these things as much as you can, and always take up this weapon called repentance.
Should Satan ever threaten you because of your many sins, or because of sins he tells you are mortal, do you know what Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite says? Only a sin for which there is no repentance and no confession remains unforgiven. Whatever sin we neither repent of nor confess remains unforgiven, however great it may be. But if we repent of what we have done and confess it, whatever it may be, the grace of God has no difficulty forgiving it. God never humiliates the person who has sinned—never. Remember when we spoke that evening about Jonah, whose feast is the day after tomorrow. He was not saved by throwing cargo overboard, like the offerings and incense we present. But when Jonah himself was cast into the sea, the storm ceased, because when the sin was removed from their midst, the tempest ended.
Remember those events we discussed. When Jonah returned to dry land and met God again, God did not say what we human beings would say: “Where were you? Why did you do that? See that you are careful now. You know you cannot behave that way toward Me.” No—not a single reproach. Nor was there any such discussion with the Prodigal Son. The father did not say, “So, where have you been? Have you come back now because you are in need?” Nothing of the sort. Not only did he refrain from rebuking him, but he ran to meet him. We might say that the Prodigal took one step, while the father took the other nine hundred and ninety-nine, for it says, “He ran and fell upon his neck and kissed him fervently.” He did not merely kiss him, nor did he send him away to wash and then bring him in through the back door because he was filthy and covered in sores. He embraced him and smothered him with kisses. Why? To show how precious
every soul is, and that Christ’s quarrel is not with the human person but with that person’s sin. Satan, therefore, uses every means first to lead a person into sin and then to hold him captive through that sin. We, in turn, must use every means to avoid sinning, if possible; and if we do sin, to escape from him. Never accept the thought that you have committed a sin too great to be forgiven, however great it may be. If we repent and acknowledge it, we return and become clean again. Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the brother of Basil the Great, says, “A single drop of tears is equal to the baptismal washing.” When a single tear of repentance falls from your eyes,
it is as though you have been baptized again, as though you emerge from the confessional made new. Know, then, that we possess a mighty assurance: “We have Jesus Christ the righteous, the propitiation.” John the Theologian says that He is the propitiation not only for our sins, but for those of the whole world. Never despair, because many people have simply given up: “How can I begin now? I tried and tried.” Sit down and confess yourself. What are you waiting for—the priest to confess you? Many say, “The priest did not ask me.” The doctor does not necessarily ask you either, but you tell him, “Doctor, I also have pain here. Doctor, it hurts there too. Doctor, when I take this medicine, this happens to me.” You go on until you have worn the poor doctor out.
Are you waiting for the priest to say everything first? Even if—God forbid—he does not ask you, you must tell him yourself. You are obliged to do so. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Ask questions and read. Today, especially, we live in a greatly blessed time, when religious books have flooded the world. As I hear it, never before have so many books circulated, and in plain language. People have been illumined, and the Church has made so many texts available in modern language that we can be helped by them. Yet we do not want this help. We remain far from the knowledge of these truths. My beloved, unfortunately we live in an age that does not want God. Why do we not want God? Why do we not want the Mysteries? Why do we not want the Church? Why do we not want the clergy?
Because we want to live outside God’s law, while the Church neither blesses nor approves our disorders—carnal, worldly, and egotistical. That is how it begins. Many who distance themselves from the Church are those who have begun to sin. Sin separates; it is a curtain that divides you from God. Take care not to put that curtain in place. Do not yield even in the smallest thing, in something you regard as nothing at all—a caress, a flirtation, a smile, a little meeting around the corner, and so forth. It will become a great thorn that leaves you unable to find peace anywhere. You cannot play with sin. Sin is what makes God appear to be an enemy, the Church appear unnecessary, and the priest or preacher appear hostile. Sin does this. That is why many people will not even open the Gospel.
We do nothing. Like ostriches, we supposedly hide our heads so that we will neither hear nor learn, yet we remain exposed to the justice of God. It is said that long ago, when Corinth stood where Ancient Corinth now stands and enjoyed commercial prosperity, and when Paul preached there, a courtesan named Lais lived in the city—a corrupt woman of that age. In her day, a kind of looking glass, a mirror, was invented. To own a mirror was a great thing in those days. Today nearly everyone carries a mirror in a handbag. But then it was something extraordinary. With the money she earned…
she paid the price and became the first woman to buy a mirror. A mirror was a remarkable possession then, and the sum she paid for it was astronomical. Her maidservants considered her blessed because she had managed to obtain such a thing. But what happened? The next day they saw her furious and agitated. She had laid the mirror on the ground and smashed it with an iron bar into a million pieces. “Good heavens, the woman has gone mad!” they said. “She paid all that money, and we do not know where she could ever find another. She has lost her mind!” They gathered around her to discover what had happened and why she had destroyed something anyone would have cherished for the sake of beauty. One of the more intelligent women close to her gently drew her aside,
trying to discover whether she had gone mad or whether something else had happened. Lais then revealed why she had smashed the mirror with such fury and malice. Do you know why? Because the mirror had dared to show her the wrinkles that were beginning to furrow her face. So the mirror was to blame for the wrinkles! If she had had no wrinkles, the mirror would not have shown her any. It would have told her that she was still eighteen. But as you approach forty or forty-five, how can it show you otherwise? It will show you with wrinkles. This is also what the speaker does, what the priest does, and what the Church does. This is what the Gospel says. It tells us about our wrinkles and our filth, and we do not want to hear such things.
That is why we do not go. The Gospel is not at fault. Christ is not at fault. When did your daughter stop attending church? When did your young son stop going to confession? When they entered into sin. Let them abandon the sin, so that it is no longer the people who see them who blush, but the man or woman committing these things. Then they will see that everything in the Orthodox Church of Christ is justified and beautifully ordered. Let us not be deceived. In what I have said there are many answers to our questions. Another device Satan uses, besides shame and the other things we have discussed, concerns the clergy. He is determined not to let a person go to the one who has been appointed. We have seen that Christ gave them…
the grace of the Holy Spirit to act in the Mystery of binding and loosing even before Pentecost. See how serious this is. If this were taken away, as I told you, no one would be saved. No one can be saved if this Mystery is removed. Not even the spiritual fathers who forgive the sins of others can save themselves by forgiving their own sins. I do not know whether you are aware that even bishops confess to others, and those others in turn confess to someone else. No one—absolutely no one—can turn his own epitrachelion around and forgive himself. This is precisely why James, the Brother of the Lord, says, “Confess your trespasses to one another, that you may be healed.” According to one Father, this is probably addressed to the clergy and not to us laypeople, although Protestants take it to mean that we should confess among ourselves. If I tell you my filth and you tell me yours, which of us can heal the other? Both you and I must go to the person appointed for this purpose. The passage probably concerns the clergy, because one clergyman
must tell his sins to another in order to receive forgiveness. I remember an incident of this kind that I encountered at Saint Anne’s Skete on the Holy Mountain. I was staying at the house of the Kartsonaios brotherhood. That evening was the eve of the feast of Saint Panteleimon. A bishop had also come and was staying farther up near the kyriakon, the central church of Saint Anne’s Skete. The brotherhood had invited both the bishop and me to remain there that night, celebrate the feast of Saint Panteleimon with them, and then go down. Without thinking and without knocking, I opened a door to fetch a book and take it to my cell, so that I could pass the time until the bell rang for Vespers. And what did I see? The abbot had just been kneeling and was rising at that very moment, while the hierarch
The bishop was removing the priest’s stole after hearing the abbot’s confession, and then he placed the stole on the abbot. Obviously, it was now his turn to confess. “I heard your confession and absolved you; now hear what I have to confess.” So the bishop confessed, and they remained there for a long time—about half an hour, perhaps three quarters of an hour—before the door opened.
Thus the bishop, in turn, confessed to the hieromonk.
So there is a way, and we must not make excuses. God has given us this way. I want you to understand that we must act as quickly as possible, while we still have time, because tomorrow does not belong to us. You see, we do not know. Let our prayer be: “My Christ, grant me this day and preserve me until I have time to confess and put these matters in order.” Basil the Great offers this beautiful counsel: “Weep beforehand, so that you will not weep there.” Weep now; repent now, or else you will weep there. Do not wait to repent of your sins until you no longer have the opportunity. Repent now, while you can, during the time granted to you by the longsuffering of God, who is waiting for you. “Do not repent of your sins only when there is no longer any time for repentance.” Let us do good as much as we can, now that the opportunity is given to us. If we lose money, we can acquire it again; money can be earned again. But if we lose time, we cannot find more of it. You cannot find another time. Take care not to waste the time you have. And again, Satan...
tries to lead a person from one delay to another: to repent but not confess, or to confess but not confess properly. Satan suggests other ways to avoid it. But John Chrysostom, whose judgment we have no reason to reject, thinks differently. Do you know what he says? “Those who dwell upon the earth and make their home here have been entrusted with authority over things in Heaven.” Do you understand that whatever a priest binds or looses here has its corresponding effect in Heaven? This is what the words mean: “Those who dwell upon the earth and make their home here.” And they “have received an authority that God gave neither to angels nor to archangels.” An angel cannot forgive sins.
An archangel cannot forgive sins. But the priest—even the sinful priest—can forgive sins. “For He did not say to them”—that is, to the angels, He did not say the words I mentioned earlier—“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.” He did not say this to the angels or to the archangels. And Glory to God that He did not leave us to confess to angels, although some people seem to want angels as their confessors. Is the priest sinful? Go and tell him that you committed fornication. An angel would cut you off. Go and tell him that you killed your children. He would cut you off. Go and tell him that you cursed or blasphemed God. It belongs to God’s compassion and all-wise providence that He entrusted this authority to flesh-and-blood human beings, who bear the burden of weakness and can show condescension toward our falls.
Did God not understand this? It was not to the angels, he says, that the words were addressed: “Whatever you bind shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed.” John Chrysostom then presents another beautiful thought that I want to share with you: “Those who rule upon the earth also possess authority to bind.” A policeman arrests you, locks you up in prison, and binds you. Earthly rulers have such authority, but only over bodies. They may confine my body, but my soul can travel wherever I wish. They have no authority over the soul, whereas priests have authority concerning souls as well.
“Whatever priests do below, God ratifies above, and the Master confirms the judgment of His servants.” Whatever the spiritual father pronounces, God confirms. I would like to make a brief observation here. Many people seek saintly spiritual fathers. May there indeed be saintly spiritual fathers! But they too are human beings. Even if your spiritual father is not a saint, God will place in his mouth whatever you need to hear at that present moment—something able to help you and suited to your need. If you need to advance and rise higher, God will gradually lead you on. You will find another guide, hear something deeper, read other things, and make progress. But if you have not even entered primary school, you cannot expect to be placed under a university professor or sent straight to university. You must begin where you are. Let us humble ourselves in this matter and not imagine that the spiritual father must know everything.
May he indeed be knowledgeable and experienced; may he also possess spiritual gifts. But if he does not, do not be troubled. Accept what he tells you, and the Lord will arrange matters. That is what benefits you, at least at this first stage of your journey. I say this because I remember something that happened during my latest journey abroad. I was speaking in a town between Toronto and Montreal—Belleville, I think it was called, if I remember correctly. It was Holy Week, and among the audience was the president of the local community, a man about forty-five or fifty years old. He had married a foreign woman, lived a very worldly life, and made a great deal of money. He had also served permanently on the Church committee for thirty years, but he had never once confessed. When he heard these things, along with what by God’s grace I had presented during those days, he said...
“I must go to the Holy Mountain.” “Why must you go to the Holy Mountain?” I asked. “To confess,” he replied. “The truth is,” I told him, “you will never go; the devil will not let you. But the Holy Mountain will come here. Before long, a priest and abbot from the Holy Mountain will visit this area to hear confessions, and they will notify you. I will ask your priest here to let you know. But hurry,” I said. “What will happen while you wait either to go there or for the Holy Mountain to come here? Can none of the clergy here—from the bishop down to the most junior priest—receive your confession? Are your sins of some special kind? Satan is deceiving you. He is sending you off to the Holy Mountain, if that were even possible—although you certainly have the money.”
“Would it matter to me if I had to spend thousands of dollars on the journey?” But please, do not imagine that this is so simple. For the moment, in your urgent need, receive first aid. The Church provides spiritual first aid. If afterward you need to go on to higher studies, as I said, a way will be found. Do not say, “I am aiming for something higher; I must find a saint to hear my confession.” Do not say such a thing. It is pride and a deception of Satan: he steals the present from you while promising you a future that does not belong to you. And take care, as Basil the Great says in a beautiful passage I have before me, not to invent your own supposed way of putting matters right. To explain why confession must be made to a clergyman, he gives this example: “Just as the ailments of the body...”
“Are not disclosed to everyone, nor to just anyone.” If your eye hurts, you go to an ophthalmologist; if it is your heart, you go to a cardiologist; if it is your hand, you go to a surgeon. In the same way, you go to a dentist, an orthopedist, and so forth. You go to the person qualified to treat your bodily illness. It is exactly the same here: “but they are disclosed to those experienced in healing them.” You do not go to just anyone. “Thus also the confession of sins must be made before those who are able to heal them.” Can some ordinary sinful person heal me? No. With what authority could he do so? No one has given him this grace. But the one who hears your confession and reads the prayer of absolution over you has received this grace. He received it from his bishop. His bishop stands in the apostolic succession, going back to those apostles who received from Christ that evening the words, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” And through the laying on of hands...
together with an official letter of appointment, the bishop gives another priest the authority to hear confessions and grant absolution. You must therefore go to the person appointed for this task; do not be deceived. Now, people may say that a certain priest is demonstrably sinful—but who truly knows whether he is or is not? Satan has a loud voice. He wages fierce war against the clergy because they are a bridge. Do you know what Holy Scripture says? “No one comes to the Father except through Me,” Christ says. Read the sixth chapter of John. Unless a person passes through Christ, he cannot come to the Father. And do you know what I, in my sinfulness, would add beneath this? No one can come to Christ, to be sent by Him to the Father, except through the clergy.
If you do not pass through the clergy, you will not be received. Even if you try to go directly, you will be sent back, for it is written, “Show yourselves to the priests.” Thus Christ is the bridge between the believer and God, and the clergy are the bridge between the believer and Christ. This is the order that exists. Whoever rejects the clergy has rejected the bridge. That is why Satan, like a gnawing rodent and saboteur, works day and night, even setting paid agents to accuse the clergy and destroy people’s respect for them. Then everyone begins to wonder whether they should go to confession, whether they should tell everything, or whether they should go at all. Yet this authority remains. However sinful a priest may be, grace is not defiled. Take a rusty wire and connect it to an electric current. What happens? Does the current not pass through because the wire is rusty? Does it pass only through galvanized wire? In exactly the same way, grace also acts through a sinful priest.
“God ordains all, and He acts through all,” says John Chrysostom. Never say, “I know what kind of man that priest is, so I will not receive antidoron from his hand.” Satan is deceiving you and drawing you away from the Church. Judas is the classic example. Does the Gospel say anywhere that Judas performed no miracles? Was Judas deprived of the power to work miracles because of his wickedness and theft, as John describes them? No, this is written nowhere. And did it benefit Judas that he received Holy Communion from the hands of Christ Himself? Could there have been a holier High Priest, and yet was Judas benefited? “Satan entered into him.” It says, “After he had received the morsel, Satan entered into him.” I ask you to pay attention also to the words, “And it was night.” Therefore, we do not demand that priests be saints—though may they indeed be saints.
I would like to make one brief observation here. Have you ever prayed that your spiritual father might become a saint—that God would preserve him from Satan, from evil people, and from human weakness? Have you ever prayed for this? The state guards important bridges. It stations guards there so that no one can blow them up and sever communication. What have you and I done for the clergy, who form this bridge of our salvation? If the clergy disappear and die out, if no one remains even to read the Trisagion prayers for us, then where will we be, and what will we do? Saint Anastasios of Sinai offers a beautiful and consoling thought on the matter we are discussing: “Do not say, ‘The priest who offers the Gifts is sinful; he stands condemned and has been found unworthy, and therefore...’”
“the grace of the All-Holy Spirit does not descend upon him.” Do not think in this way. Rather, regard him as a hidden vessel of knowledge and authority. Behind him, he says, stands Another: Christ, who, because of His love for you and because of your faith, makes the Mystery effective—whatever Mystery concerns your salvation. My dear friends, you know how fiercely the Church has recently been attacked. If our own homes were attacked, we would fight. Yet when our Church is attacked, not only do we fail to fight for her, but often, even through our silence, we take a position against her and side with her enemies. This is a grave sin.
We simply accept whatever the newspapers say, and God still bears with us. We must show respect. I did not give a child to serve the Church, and neither did you. The Church may not be exactly as you imagine her, as you would like her to be, or even as she ought to be. But do you not know that there are still people who sanctify us, baptize us, crown us in Holy Matrimony, hear our confessions, give us Holy Communion, bury us, and care for us? A lesson in respect for the clergy, whether a clergyman is good or not, was permanently imprinted in the wilderness of the Jordan. Let me take you there. When the Prophet Elijah shut the heavens so that there would be no rain, what did God tell him? Have you ever read it? “Go there,” He said, and He sent him to a cave that exists to this day above the Church of Saint George of Choziba. There, it says, He sent him meat and bread in the morning, and meat and bread in the evening, while Elijah drank water from the stream that still runs beneath it.
And what did God use to send him this food? A dove, perhaps, or a swan? No, He used an unclean bird—a raven. Lord, did You have no cleaner bird with which to send him his food? And Elijah, do you not object? How can this bird, which claws at dead bodies with its talons and tears them with its beak, bring you food? Elijah said nothing of the kind. Elijah asked: “Who is sending it? God is sending it. What is He sending me? What I need in order to live.” So he received it and gave thanks. That is how a prophet responds. Do not look at who the messenger is. Look at who sends the message, what He sends you, and what you need. Leave all the clever objections aside, if you wish to be saved.
Have respect for the messenger. Has anyone ever questioned the postman about his personal life? Do you examine his record to find out who this man is who brings your letters? You look immediately at the letter—especially if it comes from abroad—to see whether there is a check inside, and you even give the postman a tip. You do not ask whether he is immoral, a scoundrel, perverse, or what else he may have done. Yet here people act differently: “The priest is not upright. The priest is harsh. I will stay away.” Take great care. Respect the office he holds. And one more example, and I will finish, for this too may speak to you. I would like to take you to Palm Sunday, which you all know. After Christ had been received as a guest in the home of Lazarus, He departed the following morning to enter...
Jerusalem. He told His disciples to go to the village opposite, to Bethphage, and bring Him a young donkey. They placed some of their garments upon it, and Christ mounted it and entered Jerusalem. What happened when Christ entered Jerusalem upon the donkey? There was tremendous commotion—tremendous commotion! Everything was stirred. The roads were spread with flowers and covered with garments. As we might say today, the young women took out the finest things from their dowries and laid them on the road, and Christ passed through the city upon the donkey. It was like an earthquake. Indeed, one of the accusations brought against Christ was that He had entered Jerusalem as a ruler, as a king, and so they accused Him of pride. But He was not proud. Had He been proud, He would have entered on horseback, wearing spurs and holding the reins.
He rode upon a very humble animal, one perfectly suited to Him, because, as you know, the donkey is an animal of patient endurance and humility. And now it carried upon its back the very Master of patient endurance and humility. This made Him unmistakable, for, as Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says, no king had ever entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. In their pride, they had all entered on fine steeds, on choice horses. And so they received Him. But come now, people of Jerusalem: why all this splendor? Why all this expense? Why all these things?
For the donkey carrying Him—the beast that does menial work?

Αλήθεια ότι υπάρχουν πολλοί άνθρωποι μετανοημένοι για τη ζωή τους και ίσως να πω ότι και κλαίνε ακόμη, αλλά ουδέποτε εξομολογημένοι, όπως υπάρχουν και πολλοί άνθρωποι οι οποίοι είναι εξομολογημένοι και ουδέποτε μετανοημένοι. Εξομολογούνται για να υποκλέψουν μιαν ευχή, να κοινωνήσουν τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη, να κοινωνήσουν το Πάσχα, το Δεκαπενταύγουστο, αλλά την άλλη μέρα ξανά τη ζωή μας την πρώτη. Είναι σαν τους βατράχους εκείνους που βγαίνουν από το νερό λίγο απ' έξω και στο παραμικρό, μπλουμ, πάλι μέσα στο νερό. Δεν απεμακρύνθησαν. Είναι λίγοι εκείνοι που είναι και μετανοημένοι και εξομολογημένοι. Το σωστό είναι αυτό. Δεν είναι «μετανοώ, δεν ξανατοκάνω». Και εκείνο που έκανες ποιος το πληρώνει; Τα χρέη που έβαλες έναντι της δικαιοσύνης του Θεού πώς θα απαλειφθούν;
Περιμένεις να πει ο ιερεύς; Και όταν δεν σε ρωτήσει ο ιερεύς και μας εξαίρεσες το Θεέ, θα το πεις εσύ. Είσαι υποχρεωμένος. «Άγνοια νόμου δεν χωρεί». Θα ρωτήσεις, θα διαβάζεις. Και σήμερα μάλιστα βρισκόμαστε σε μια τόσο μεγάλη ευλογημένη εποχή, που το βιβλίο το θρησκευτικό έχει κατακλύσει τον κόσμο. Δεν έχει γίνει στα χρονικά, όπως ακούω, να κυκλοφορούν τόσα βιβλία και σε απλή γλώσσα. Φωτίστηκαν και άνθρωποι και η Εκκλησία και λοιπά και έχουν μεταγλωττίσει τόσα πράγματα που μπορούμε να βοηθηθούμε. Αλλά δεν θέλουμε, δεν θέλουμε και μένουμε μακριά από τη γνώση αυτών των αληθειών. Αγαπητοί μου, είμαστε σε μια εποχή, δυστυχώς, που δεν το θέλουμε το Θεό. Και γιατί δεν το θέλουμε το Θεό; Γιατί δεν τα θέλουμε τα μυστήρια; Γιατί δεν θέλουμε την Εκκλησία; Γιατί δεν θέλουμε τον κλήρο;
Υπήρχε σε ένα ζώο πολύ ταπεινό, που πολύ του πήγαινε στα μέτρα, γιατί, όπως ξέρετε, ο όνος είναι το ζώο της υπομονής και της ταπεινότητας. Και έφερε στην πλάτη του τώρα τον αρχηγό της υπομονής και της ταπεινότητας. Και για να είναι πια δαχτυλοδεικτούμενος, διότι ουδείς εισήλθε ποτέ, όπως λέγει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος Ιεροσολύμων, βασιλεύς επί όνου στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Όλοι, από τον εγωισμό τους, περνούσαν μέσα με κέλητες, με άλογα εκλεκτά. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι ότι τον εδέχθησαν. Και ελάτε εδώ, κύριοι Ιεροσολυμίτες. Προς τι αυτή η χλιδή; Προς τι αυτά τα έξοδα; Προς τι όλα αυτά τα πράγματα;
