Summary

The lecture answers practical questions of Orthodox Christian life, beginning with why sins must be confessed to a priest rather than privately to God alone. The speaker contrasts Orthodox confession and the Eucharist with Protestant practices and recounts a cautionary story about a woman who sought absolution from Saint John the Baptist instead of a confessor. Fasting is presented as a command instituted by God in Paradise, where Adam’s prohibition from eating the forbidden fruit taught abstinence and showed that disobedience brings both spiritual and bodily death.

What pleases me tonight is that this talk will consist mainly of answers to certain questions that have been raised. So I will not be the one devising the subject, which someone might say was deliberately constructed. At the same time, we will pull out certain thorns—those persistent doubts and questions. Wherever there is an unresolved question concerning the faith, it is like a thorn in a flowerpot: it draws away the moisture and strength meant for the plant. Such thorns must be uprooted.

During these days that I have been here, I have written down several questions, and tonight I would like to answer them, since this is also our last evening together. The first is this: Since God is everywhere present, why should we confess to a priest instead of confessing directly to God, who is everywhere present?

This question troubles many people who wish to avoid direct, proper confession. God does not hear anyone’s confession in that appointed way. Nor is God the Father the One who acts directly in this way today—you should understand this. It is Christ who acts today. Since Christ rose from the dead, all authority has been given to Christ, and Baptism is performed in the name of Jesus: “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” And Holy Communion is likewise given in the name of Jesus: the Body of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Confession also...

...is made in the name of Jesus Christ. “You, O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ do You, O Lord, loose this servant of Yours as well.” Thus it is not God the Father who now stands, as it were, upon the stage, since these things are done in the name of Jesus. And since Christ established that His clergy should administer this matter of sins, how can I now say, “I will tell them to God”? God will send me to Christ. Christ must prepare me so that He may bring me to God. And ultimately we shall go to God, for the Kingdom belongs to God—the Kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom.”

Unless the Son prepares a person, that person cannot do it in his own way merely by raising his hands and telling everything to God. God already knows it all. What new thing have I told Him, since He knows it already? God has entrusted this authority to Christ, and Christ has the Church; He has an inn...

...with an innkeeper. Did He not tell the parable of the Good Samaritan? He placed the man who had fallen among thieves upon his own animal, brought him to the inn, entrusted him there, and instructed the innkeeper—the clergy, the priest—saying, “Take care of him. Look after him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return”—when He comes again to judge the living and the dead.

Therefore, man’s salvation is found within the inn, through the innkeepers. What will you say to God? After all, what did God say back to you? You told Him, “I stole; I committed adultery.” And what did God say? “Very well, My child, congratulations”? What did He tell you? Did He say, “Your sins are forgiven; I forgive you”? Where did He tell you that? Where? You have received no answer from God. When you are ill, do you raise your hands in the general direction of the doctor and cry, “Doctor, I have this and that”? You do not even know what is wrong with you. You must go to the doctor so that he can examine you properly. He will examine you; it may hurt; you will explain how you feel; he will write a prescription; you will take the medicine and be healed. Why, then, do you think it is enough here simply to raise your hands and say, “My God, I have sinned”? If you never come to understand your condition, who will tell you what it is, and how will they tell you?

So this is the point: God is everywhere present. He truly is everywhere present, but He has appointed a particular way for man’s sins to be set in order. On the very evening of His Resurrection, our Christ appeared among the disciples, who were behind closed doors for fear of the Jews. I do not know whether you have visited Jerusalem, but that upper room remains there to this day. He stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He immediately told them, “I shall depart before long. As the Father has sent Me, even so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” If someone tells you that he has sinned, and you forgive his sins...

...he is forgiven; and whoever you do not forgive remains bound. It was to them, then, that He entrusted this right and gave this authority. Christ gave them this authority, and when He departed He did not take it away with Him, but left it with them. From the earliest days until today, spiritual fathers have been the ones entrusted with discernment concerning man’s sin. I do not know whether I have already told you during these days that, for every illness of the body, the physician gives his judgment; for the illness of the soul, the clergyman gives his judgment. If you have a copy of the Old Testament, open the Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 38, and you will find the first verse.

“Give the physician his place, for you have need of him.” Make room for the physician to come in, because you need him in your illness. “The Lord created medicines from the earth.” Medicines are made from plants. The plants belong to God, not to the physicians. Physicians discovered their uses; they did not create them. Who created them? God created them. He therefore charged physicians with preparing medicines for mankind. Yet although the physician gives his judgment concerning every bodily disease, it is the clergyman who gives his judgment concerning leprosy. Leprosy is the type, the foreshadowing, of sin.

Open Leviticus, chapters 13 and 14, and you will find God acting as Hippocrates, the master physician. What does He say? If the scar or wound has this color, you shall do this; if it has that color, you shall do that; if it is white and deep, you shall do something else; and if it is of a certain kind, the priest will issue the ruling, and the person must leave the village, depart from the town, and go out into the fields. As I said, physicians dealt with all bodily illnesses, but leprosy was entrusted to the clergy. That is why, when our Christ encountered the ten lepers from afar and they cried, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us,” what did He tell them? “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” They set out to show themselves, and as they went, while they were still on the road, they were healed. One returned and gave thanks. But the other nine?

Being ungrateful, they did not return. That is why our Lord said, “Were not the ten cleansed? But where are the nine?” Could they not also have returned to offer a word of thanks? Yet ingratitude is always found in man, because man forgets easily and imagines that his achievements are his own—whether his health, his money, his family, his work, and so forth. You are told, “Go to that employee; go to the cashier.” “But are you not the director?” “Yes, I am.”

“Then you should give me the money.” “You must go there to receive it. I am the director and a shareholder, but that is where you must go to receive it.” Exactly the same thing happens with the forgiveness of sins. Christ forgives, but He does so through the clergy. That is why I told you earlier that the prayer read over us when we kneel says: “You, O Lord, who said—You Yourself who said—‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ loose this servant of Yours as well.” He does it, but He does it through the clergy. This is what He has ordained. For if everything were done directly, you would receive no counsel: Did I act rightly? Did I act wrongly? How can I avoid doing it again? You do not know. A person does not even properly know what is a sin and what is not. The spiritual father, insofar as God has formed and equipped him and he has been properly instructed...

...must tell you, “This, my child, is a sin. Do not do it again. Be careful about this, and be careful about that.” Neither an icon of a doctor nor God approached directly in this way gives you an answer. Go before an icon of Christ and say whatever you wish. The answer is: “Why are you telling Me these things? I already know them. Go and tell them where I have commanded that they be blotted out.” You should understand, then, that this is a Protestant theory—the teaching of the Lutherans, the Baptists, the Evangelicals, and Protestants generally. Because they have no clergy and no Holy Orders, they invented the idea that they confess on their own and everything is settled. As the saying goes, John pours the wine and John drinks it: they declare themselves forgiven and carry on. Nor do they possess the Mystery. Even what they call the Holy Eucharist or Holy Communion, they observe merely as a memorial, using wine and bread.

They receive it in remembrance, not as the Body and Blood of Jesus, as it truly is for us. Consequently, those who ask whether they can confess directly to God because He is everywhere present cannot do so. The sins a person confesses to the man appointed by God are forgiven. But the sins not confessed to the appointed servant—sins merely claimed to have been told elsewhere—are not taken away. And this applies not only to God, but also to the Most Holy Theotokos and the Saints. People say, “My Most Holy Theotokos, forgive me. My Saint George, forgive me.” They do not forgive sins. Neither God the Father directly, nor Christ directly, nor the Most Holy Theotokos, nor the Saints forgive sins in this appointed Mystery. The priest pronounces the forgiveness.

Forgive me for speaking this way concerning the Most Holy Theotokos; she is the divine Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. She will send you to Christ, and Christ will send you to the priest. This is the appointed way. Those who imagine that they can settle their sins by some method of their own will find every one of those sins standing before them. Let me offer a simple example. Once I went with a priest to a village in the mountainous region of Livadeia. It stood at an elevation of about a thousand meters. We went there in December, around the feast of Saint Spyridon, and stayed for two or three days. Among the people who came for confession were some who had never confessed before, as the confessor told me. One elderly woman also came. She had never confessed in her entire life. Yet at the upper edge of the village...

...there was a small church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, and every evening, throughout her life, she would go there to light the lamps before the honorable Forerunner. Whenever a great feast approached, such as Christmas or Pascha, she would go and say to him, “My lord Saint John, you know what I have done. Forgive me, for I am going to receive Holy Communion,” and then she would go and receive. The year we visited, the feast of Saint Spyridon had been two or three days earlier, and she was preparing for Christmas. At dusk the elderly woman again went up to light the lamps. Once more she asked her lord Saint John to forgive her sins, saying that she was going to receive Holy Communion. As she spoke, two hands came out from the icon of Saint John and struck her hard on the head, one after the other, and she fell to the floor. “You have worn Me out all these years!” he said. “Has God—or Christ—appointed Me to forgive sins...

...or has He appointed His priests to forgive them? I baptized only once, in the Jordan—not for the forgiveness of sins, but to prepare the way for Christ.” The elderly woman’s eyes darkened; she fell to the ground and fainted. She was unconscious and could no longer respond. They waited for her to return home, but she did not come. They thought that, on her way back from lighting the lamps, she might have stopped at a neighbor’s house or gone to visit one of her grandchildren, so they searched for her. Nothing. Then they became afraid that she might have fallen into one of the ditches along the road descending toward the village. They took a lantern and went up. Seeing the door open, they realized that something had happened. They entered, and what did they find? The elderly woman lying unconscious on the floor, unable to speak or do anything. It was cold as well.

They removed the door from the chapel, laid her upon it, and two strong young men carried her down. They brought her near the hearth where a fire was burning, warmed her, gave her a little brandy, and rubbed her until she revived. Then she recounted everything I have just told you. For the first time, she went to the spiritual father and confessed, after forty-five years. “You have worn Me out all these years!” Saint John had said. “Was I appointed to forgive sins, or were His priests?” Thus spoke Saint John, the preacher of metanoia—repentance. Do you understand? Therefore, my beloved, the claim that, because God is everywhere present, we can confess directly to Him and be saved is not correct. Any sin that is not confessed to a priest is not forgiven in this appointed Mystery. Now, after this, let me address...

...one more question. The second question concerns card-playing: “Is it permissible,” someone asks, “to play cards for entertainment?” It appears that here every household plays cards and keeps everything needed for it, as though it were essential: a deck of cards, gambling chips, and a green felt table in the home. Modern homes have all these things. People play either openly or privately; indeed, they also gamble in casinos and even travel to other cities in order to play cards.

Strictly speaking, it is not permitted. It is not permitted.

“I am simply killing time,” someone says. If time were a beast and you were killing it, that might be well and good. But time is not a beast. God did not give you time to kill; God gave you time to use well. But do you know what you are taking into your hand when you pick up a deck of cards? Do you know that you are holding fifty-two devils? Do you know what the man who designed the king had in mind, and whom he was mocking? The king mocks God the Father. Do you know whom the queen mocks? The Most Holy Theotokos. Do you know whom the jack mocks? Christ. And do you know that the diamonds, spades, and the rest mock the Precious Cross? These sacred things are mocked in the cards.

When you take a deck of cards into your hand, you take the Holy Trinity, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Precious Cross into your hand. You slap them down on the table, and through them you blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, and the rest. Even if you begin playing as a joke, most of the time it will end in a quarrel. You may play merely for fun, without a single drachma at stake, yet you behave as though you were losing your whole fortune: shouting, blaspheming, and beating yourself over nothing—perhaps over a sweet, or simply in jest. Satan has the power to entangle you so thoroughly that he makes you blaspheme. And I do not know whether you realize what tremendous power gambling has. Women know this better. They do not fear a husband who chases women as much as they fear one who gambles. If he chases women, at least he will come home eventually. But if he is caught up in cards, they have lost him: he forgets her, and she may as well forget him. I remember the case of an officer.

His friends had to go and fetch him from the club. His bride was waiting at Saint Dionysius the Areopagite in Athens, while he was still gambling at the club. At last someone found him and brought him straight from the card table, just as he was, and the wedding took place. Then the bride went into her room to change, and he too was supposed to change so that they could leave on their honeymoon. But the groom disappeared. They searched everywhere: where was the groom? What had happened to him? The bride collapsed; there was weeping, panic, and confusion. Three days later, a friend who knew his weakness found him at the club, still gambling. He had gone straight back there and carried on playing. He came, was married, left his bride, and returned to the club to gamble. It is a very serious matter, a very serious matter.

Yet many people tell you, “I only play casually.” That is not so. Once a person takes cards into his hands, he becomes demonically possessed. Something happened just the other day. I do not know the language, but while I was coming from Phoenix, I realized that a man who came up in the line was desperately trying not to miss that particular flight, and he was behaving like a man possessed. People here are usually calm; they respect one another, stand in line, and so on. But this man kept pushing forward, and the person accompanying me said, “Do you know what he is saying?” “What is he saying? I do not know.” There is a city—you will know it, though I may not pronounce it correctly—called Vegas, Vegas, Vegas. In fact, I even have a refrigerator bearing that name back where I stay in Athens, though I did not know what it meant.

“He wants to go there,” my companion told me, “and he wants to go right now to gamble.” This was last Saturday. “He wants to go and gamble, and he does not want to miss it,” he said. What a state that man was in! You could see that he had someone else inside him, even though, as I said, people here are generally calm and courteous. But he was desperate not to miss the gambling there. As you know, entire fortunes have been lost, and people have been left on the street. In any case, it is best to have nothing to do with it. If you claim that you take up cards merely to kill time, there is nothing lower than that. But there is something else as well: whoever sits down to play sits down to win. No one sits down merely for the sake of sitting there. If you ask him, “Why did you come to play?” he will answer, “To win.” Is that not so? Who would sit there otherwise? And whatever one person wins, another person must lose. Someone must lose. That is how it is.

You sit down to play in order to win. And do you know what will happen? You will begin to scheme. You will cheat. You will make an arrangement with one player so that together you can fleece another. I remember two brothers who were shipowners and had the passion of gambling. They knew that I too was a gambler, because I used to gamble, and I am speaking to you from personal experience. We shall speak about this on Saturday and again on Wednesday. I know what I am talking about. I sat down to win, not merely to play; and when you sit down to win, you will cheat. You will mark the cards, stack the deck, bribe someone, and have a marked deck brought in. You act dishonorably. You take away another man’s bread, the bread of his children, the fruit of his labor. You rig the game in order to trap him.

It is fraud. Such a man is a robber, and if he wins, his winnings are robbery—vicious robbery, robbery through deceit. Yet no one says anything; they say he is only amusing himself. How is that amusement? I remember those two gentlemen in Psychiko. Their passion drove them to gamble with a chauffeur and a coffeehouse waiter. Those men had only a hundred drachmas in their pockets, while the two brothers would lose fifty thousand in a single night. My dear sir, how can you go and gamble with a coffeehouse waiter? What can you possibly take from him?

From the servants’ entrance he crept upstairs on tiptoe. He took some five-hundred-drachma notes that he had secretly hidden in a bedside cabinet, then slipped out again like a cat, as though the police might catch him robbing his own house. A burden weighed on his head, for these are the consequences of the passion for cards—the passion for cards. He himself used to recount these things. He went back out on tiptoe, retracing his steps. In the morning, his wife saw the broken window and said to him, “We were robbed last night.” She asked what had happened and so forth. “They told me about it over there. Well, apparently they did not manage to get inside.” Do you understand? He put his own hand through the window, opened it, went upstairs, and stole the money. Later, when his wife looked for it, the money had vanished. He had gambled it away and lost it. We will speak of the depths to which a person can fall when he is mastered by a passion that we regard as nothing serious.

My dear man, you squander the fruit of another person’s labor at the gambling table? By what right? What do you gain, and what are you doing? And that is without even mentioning the crimes committed in such circumstances and all the rest. Above all today, there is this gambling craze, which is not expressed only through cards. It also appears in betting on horses, football pools, and so on.

It also appears in greyhound racing, for they have races for dogs as well. I do not know whether they have them here. In the place I visited farther south, they race not only horses but dogs too. I do not know whether you have seen how it works. They put the dogs inside a large stadium and set an artificial hare moving ahead of them. The dogs think it is a real hare and run to catch it. The hare moves quickly, and whichever dog comes in first wins.

And what happens around every one of these things? Passion, shouting, complaining, high blood pressure, heart trouble, and worse. This is what happens to a rational, respectable person once he becomes a gambler. That is why I want to speak to you from experience. In my former life, I too was deeply involved in this—not merely a gambler, but an accomplished gambler, a dishonest gambler. That is where it leads you; and the cleverer you are, the more cunning you become in such matters. Yet I regarded this as a great achievement, and others even applauded me. “What a mind you had!” they would say. But when God took hold of me and I passed beyond that life, I saw what I had been doing. So now I understand the question being asked here: “Is card-playing permitted as entertainment?” Cards as entertainment? You should see games such as gin rummy, where ladies sit down to play and the others pluck them bare like chickens. And there is more besides.

They abandon their children, their husbands, and everything else. One evening there was a card game near the Museum. The husband was upstairs playing with the men, while his wife was downstairs playing with the women. The wife began to feel pain in her heart, and they notified her husband upstairs. He said, “Tell the lady of the house to telephone someone to examine her.” Her condition soon became more serious. “Tell the other lady, the hostess, to call a doctor.” The woman fainted, as I recall, and the doctor came and ordered that an ambulance be called. The ambulance arrived, but her husband still did not come down. They placed her in the ambulance and were about to leave. She died as soon as they put her inside. When he was told, he said, “Tell my Katy to telephone such-and-such a funeral home.” And he still did not get up from the card table. This happened near the Museum in Athens. That is the passion for cards; listen carefully to what I am telling you. It takes hold of a person with tremendous force, pins him down, and degrades him. It can even drive him to murder.

Forgive me, but I have spoken about this subject from personal experience. Now we come to another question: “Who instituted fasting—God or human beings?” “Who instituted fasting—God or human beings?” God instituted fasting. No human being instituted it. No one ever makes a law against his own belly. We all love our bellies, want to satisfy them, and take care of them. No one willingly goes against the belly, whoever he may be. So when did fasting begin? It began when humanity began. It is not something recent that the Fathers introduced.

It was not invented by some monk, some ascetic, or anyone else. Fasting has existed for as long as man has existed. The law of fasting was given in Paradise. Adam received the first commandment. God told him, “You shall not eat from this tree,” under penalty of death. He did not tell him not to walk past that tree, sit beneath it, or look at it. He told him not to eat its fruit—to fast from it. You may have everything else, but not this. Fasting has existed since then. Adam received the first commandment: “You shall not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,” and this under penalty of death. Under penalty of death. “On the day you eat from the tree”—if you eat from it—you will die two deaths.

A spiritual death and a bodily death, for there are two kinds of death. So long as the soul remains united to the body, the person is alive. When the soul leaves the body, the body dies and is dissolved into the elements from which it was formed. In the same way, when the soul is separated from God—when a person has no relationship with the Church, does not confess, does not receive Holy Communion, and so forth—is that soul alive or dead? The person has natural life, as a dog, a bird, or a cat does, but he has no spiritual life. He has natural life, but not spiritual life. This is how Adam died: he was separated, for death means separation. Something dead is cut off from life. When Adam sinned, he died spiritually; he was separated from God. He lost God, and then he died bodily nine hundred and thirty years later.

Nine hundred and thirty years. Methuselah lived nine hundred and fifty-nine years, and other people of that time lived nine hundred and ten years, nine hundred years, eight hundred and ninety years. God permitted the first generations to live longer so that they could pass down from one generation to the next what God had told them. Later, when writing was developed—on skins, on wood, then on paper, and so forth—people began to die sooner. Such long lives were no longer necessary. Basil the Great says exactly what I am telling you: “Fasting was instituted in Paradise. Adam received the first commandment: ‘You shall not eat from the tree.’ The words ‘You shall not eat’ are the institution of fasting.”

Had Eve fasted from the tree and not eaten from it, we would not now need this fast. But because she ate and was driven out, we must fast now. Therefore, let us fast so that we may return to Paradise. For the issue that drove man out of Paradise was fasting. That is why the Church gives us a strict fast at the beginning of Great Lent and throughout the whole of Lent until its end: so that we may return to Paradise, the Church calls us to fast. What Adam failed to do, we must do today. You see, human beings did not invent fasting. Later they established how the fast should be observed, based on the fast of Christ, who fasted for forty days and forty nights, neither eating nor drinking. Thus the fast of Great Lent was instituted.

It is the strictest fast, together with the fast before August 15. Another fast was then established by Christ Himself: Wednesday and Friday. These are two days of mourning. On one, Christ was betrayed for money; on the other, Christ was crucified. Since these are days of mourning, how could it be otherwise?

On Great Friday, darkness covered the earth for hours, and even the sun hid its rays. When there is a funeral in your home, do you lay out a feast—an Paschal feast at that? You do not even drink coffee. Is it such a serious burden to fast two days a week, especially when it is so beneficial to your body? Do you know what it means to let the pancreas rest for twenty-four hours, from Thursday evening until Saturday morning, as far as food is concerned?

As for food, eat fruit and so many other things. Is it really necessary on that day to fry eggs, eat steaks, and eat such foods? The same applies on Wednesday. Fasting benefits the body itself, even from the standpoint of health—quite apart from religion. If we gave the body two days to rest, we would give it wings for many other tasks. And yet fasting has been banished and is no longer observed. Saint John Chrysostom answers those who say, whether jokingly or seriously, “The servant of God fasts because he has nothing to eat. But we have food, so why should we fast?”

Such are the thoughts people have. I had a friend who was a civil engineer, and on the first Sunday of the fast I met him at Church. “Come,” he said, “let us go to my house for coffee.” As soon as we entered, he said to his wife, “You know, Litsa—you know.” Litsa was his wife’s name. I understood what he meant.

There before us were all sorts of fine things, beautifully sliced, with eggs and so on. I pushed the plate away and drank only the coffee. He said to me, “We will fall out if you do not eat.” “Better,” I told him, “to fall out with you than to fall out with Him.” “What will people think?” he said. “But that is different,” he insisted. “Those other things are different.” And he became angry. The sad and bitter thing was that he became angry, though he was a man of standing in his own home.

He and one of his partners had donated an entire apartment to a religious organization, and we held gatherings there. They had also established a center that took in tuberculosis patients after they left the sanatoriums. Since their families would not receive them at home, the center welcomed them and cared for them. These were beautiful works. But he himself remained outside. The question is not what you do for others; the question is what you do for yourself. I told him plainly, “I do not do this. If you want to do it, then do it.” But I will tell you this: they collected a great deal of money—three hundred thousand a month, at a time when money was backed by gold. It was a great deal of money.

In any case, that would not do. This is what happened. I said to him, “Take care, my dear Manolis, lest some illnesses come upon you whose treatments conflict with one another. Let me give you an example: you may have glaucoma and be told to eat only zucchini, while also having diabetes and being told to eat only meat. Try reconciling the two. They cannot be reconciled, and you can see the danger coming from far away.” For Saint John Chrysostom says most beautifully—and I quoted this to him—“Take care: if you are rich, do not drive fasting away from your table and your home, lest fasting rise up, go to the Lawgiver, and accuse you.” In this case, the Lawgiver is Christ. Fasting will go to Him and say, “You know, my Lord and Master, the rich man of such-and-such a house drove me away. He did not keep me as a companion at his table. He showed me no honor, but drove me away in disgrace.”

Then He may take away what you have, and you will become poor and be forced to fast; or He may permit illness to come upon you—and you can see such things approaching from far away. And so it happened, my dear ones: within a few days that man developed diabetes and, I do not know, six or seven other illnesses. If you saw him now, he is as thin as a strand of spaghetti. He is still alive, but he is wasting away, and he remembers what we told him. I say this on the basis of what I have read. Many people claim that fasting is for the poor: “We have plenty; our refrigerators are full. Fasting is for the poor.” It is not for the poor alone; it is for everyone. It is not merely a consolation because the poor man does not eat, so that he may later have something to eat. No. The rich man must also exercise discernment. Basil the Great expresses a beautiful thought: “In every Church there is an angel.”

This angel records those who fast. He has a register for the days of Great Lent and the other fasts, and he writes down the names of those who observe them. Take care, he says, lest you escape the registrar’s notice and he fail to record you as present, but instead record you as a deserter. The point is not merely to fill yourself with good vegetables until you are full to the throat. The point is for the food to pass down and be done with. Take care, then, lest the registrar fail to mark you present and record you as a deserter.

Since you are in the Church, belong to the Church, and have been baptized and received Christ as your leader, you are obliged to be present for the fast as well. If you are absent, he calls you a deserter—and woe to you tomorrow, he says, at the Judgment. Of course, for many people all this sounds like lofty rhetoric.

Yet in truth, fasting concerns the human person both bodily and spiritually. Never give way, for I hear many people say, “We ourselves do not eat such foods, but we went there and found ourselves in that situation, and we ate so that we would not be misunderstood or scandalize anyone.” Really? Was that what you ought to have done? First of all, did you not know that where you were going they would serve rich, non-fasting food? Surely you knew. Why did you not avoid going? Second, suppose you went to greet them on their feast day, just as I come to yours and you come to mine. I ask you: if they served you non-fasting food, did you not have the right to say, “Forgive me; just give me a drink—a small glass of something”?

They may say, “Take some; we prepared it especially.” You can answer, “This is non-fasting food. I have not come to a Jewish home; I have come to an Orthodox home. I never imagined that you would serve non-fasting food today.” Let me give you an example. The feast of Saint Nicholas always falls within the forty-day fast, yet people named Nicholas, and others celebrating that feast, usually serve non-fasting foods. By what right, sir, do you serve such food today? And by what right do you expect me to accept it? Do you know that from the time your Saint was born, when he took his mother’s breast on Wednesdays and Fridays, he would drink milk only after the sun had set in the evening? What honor are you showing this Saint? How can I accept what you offer? Do you not understand which Saint you are celebrating? How, then, can I take it?

You must stand your ground, because do you know what will happen? Tomorrow, when we go up above and you want Christ to acknowledge you, others will say, “He was a lukewarm Christian. We were fasting there, but he never said anything to us and accepted whatever we offered him.” No. With discernment, you will refuse it. You will not take it. This is serious. What did you say to Christ that day—“Step outside, because guests have arrived; You can return when they leave”?

And woe to You if You speak to me again before I invite You back! Yes—because guests arrived, you set Christ aside. What can I say to you? There was no other day? You could tell them, “I am very sorry that you happened to come today. You could have come another day, and then, my dear ones, you could have eaten lamb. But today is Wednesday or Friday, so at most we will eat a dish cooked with oil. There is some squid and a few shrimp; today we have everything that is permitted,” so that you may still welcome your guest. He may have come hungry from abroad or from far away, and you should show him hospitality. Yet instead fasting has been driven into exile, and we imagine that one thing has nothing to do with another. But fasting remains fasting, instituted by God. So I am sorry—truly sorry—that I speak in this tone and in this manner, but that is how things are.

That is how things are. Within the limits of your strength, exercise discernment and fast. Pay attention to your children as well. This is not the wartime Occupation, when there was nothing to eat. If a doctor tells you to keep your child on rice water for ten days, the child will live on rice water because the doctor said so. But Christ is cast aside. How long will Christ endure our mockery? He is our God. There are so many foods available. Make the child a dish cooked with oil, prepare a few potatoes or something else. It is no hardship. I speak from personal experience. God gave us one child, and we taught him to fast from the first day he was born. From the very beginning we raised him in fasting. By the time he was eleven or twelve, he had already fasted through every Great Lent since he was three, four, or five years old. It is no hardship, especially with the abundance of foods available today and the discernment we can apply.

You may ask, “What does a child understand?” He may not understand, but he learns. And when he grows up, leaves your care, and establishes his own home, he will carry this within himself: “This is what we did in my father’s and mother’s house.” Then he will order his own household in the same way. He learns; he becomes accustomed to it. Do you not train a puppy from an early age to hunt? We teach many things from childhood. It is exactly the same with fasting. It will not seem burdensome to him tomorrow when he has his own home. He will need to teach his own children, and because fasting has become his own possession and habit, it will come very naturally to him. Today on the Holy Mountain they fast on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—three days a week. Even now, during the period when “Christ is risen” is sung, oil is permitted until the leave-taking of Pascha, that is, until the eve of the Ascension.

Oil is permitted then. But during the other fasts, the discipline remains. The human person has three enemies: the flesh, the world, and the devil. The devil is the last of these. This is how Christ was tempted. You have read about the temptations of Christ and how He was tried. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, overcoming the flesh. Then the devil told Him to climb up and cast Himself down so that the angels would catch Him and the world would applaud Him. Christ answered, “Get behind Me, Satan.” Then the devil again told Him to bow down before him, and he would give Him all the kingdoms.

Again Christ said to him, “Get behind Me. You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.” The foremost enemy of the human soul is the flesh. The human body is like a furnace that burns continually. If you keep throwing fuel into it, what will happen? It will burn you, and it will even burn stone. Do you think there would be such moral corruption if people fasted? No. Let people observe a three-day fast, and every house of corruption would close. Nothing of that kind would remain standing if there were a three-day fast. I am not telling you to starve; I am telling you to fast with discernment. Nor should it be like the Catholics, who allow fish on Wednesday and Friday. That is a mockery. If you eat fish on Wednesday and Friday and meat on the other days, when exactly are you fasting? Is that fasting?

When Wednesday or Friday comes, use oil if necessary—use oil. I am not telling you to eat food without oil. Put in some oil, but let fasting enter the home, for young and old alike, because unfortunately this virtue is absent today. So, in answer to this third question—“Who instituted fasting?”—it was not instituted by human beings. God instituted it, and it is to be practiced with discernment. Keep in mind that fasting is not intended to kill the body. It is not meant to send people to a sanatorium or a psychiatric hospital. Practiced with moderation and discernment, it kills the passions and calms carnal impulses; it does not kill the body. Its purpose is not to make people ill. Therefore, when illness is present, you set the fasting rule aside. You impose absolutely nothing on the sick person. He may eat even on Great Friday, because the food he eats is taken as medicine. It is no longer simply food; it is medicine.

The final question is this: “Is Holy Matrimony for the begetting of children, and will someone who has no children be punished?” The question, of course, is rather absurd. If Holy Matrimony is not for the begetting of children, what is it for? Why does Holy Matrimony exist? When God created the first two human beings, what did He tell them? “Be fruitful and multiply.” This applies to everyone. The purpose of creating male and female is the increase of humankind. “Be fruitful and multiply, and have dominion over the earth.” Fill the whole world, the whole earth, with people. The earth was made to be filled with human beings; it was not made to remain the domain of wild beasts. Three quarters of the earth...

...is uncultivated. How many more people could live upon it? Easily five times the present population. Our own country, for example, has become a wilderness. Everything has been abandoned. Even the olives remain unharvested on the trees; the grapes and vineyards are left unharvested. You can see how many people the land could sustain. And yet man follows his own will, avoids having children, and asks, “Will someone who has no children be punished?” If God does not grant you children, you will not be punished. But if God grants them and you refuse them, then you certainly will be punished. What happens today? As you know, both eating and the begetting of children are accompanied by pleasure. There is a kind of gratuity and joy in them. When you eat, you experience pleasure in your mouth; you enjoy the food.

When husband and wife have marital relations, there is joy and pleasure. That pleasure is a gratuity given for the sake of what follows: in eating, it leads man to nourish and preserve the body. If the mouth found no pleasure in food, the body would die. Our appetite draws us to eat, and God gives us this enjoyment while the body is nourished at the same time. The same applies to having children. God gives you the gratuity of pleasure, because without it you would not have children. In other words, He pays you for the work. But what happens now? Man takes the gratuity and does not perform the work; he does not have children. For this he will be called to account. Of course, this is a very broad subject, because people raise many objections. They speak of illness, poverty, and many other difficulties.

But if a person is willing to examine his own life, he will see that he is not justified in taking such a position. Satan simply discourages him, and he follows a path contrary to God. Take us, for example: I am one of my mother’s twelve children, and my wife is one of her mother’s thirteen children. Not one of us was lost. So how can I, when each of us comes from a family of twelve or thirteen children, have only one or two? How? Why? For what reason? Were conditions better then? Today there are far more comforts. Today a child can be fed and educated with ease; everything can be provided today—and yet people say it is very difficult. What, then, was it like in those days? I came to Athens in 1945, when all the others were hungry, and yet they all made their way in life.

Some became generals, others entered the judiciary, and others became saints—yes, saints, what else can I call them? God abandons no one. Why, then, would you deprive of life people who might become inventors, great scientists, or saints? What right have you, for the sake of a piece of bread, to block their path and say, “No, you will not come into the world; I will throw you into the trash”? Do you understand what is happening here? You do not know what you are throwing away. You do not know who this human being is whom you are crushing. Let me simply tell you this—I do not know whether you have read about her: there was a Saint Catherine, not the one of Mount Sinai, who was her mother’s twenty-fifth child.

Her mother had one child, then two, then five, then ten, then a full dozen—twelve. And still that was not enough for her! How much youth and strength she must have had—God knows!

Then fifteen, eighteen, twenty, twenty-four. “You have been given two children—is that not enough for you?” No: the twenty-fifth was Saint Catherine. So what has been taken away from you? And do you know what a blessing a child is within a family? It is a tremendous thing. Yet some people cannot bear to hear this. Those who try in one way or another to restrict childbearing pay the price: they grow weary and suffer in soul and body as though they had all the children they might have had—even if it were only one more. You have one child, and, God help you, that one will cost you the effort of five. The weariness, pain, and sorrow that child causes you will equal what five children might have caused. And in the end you will lose that child. If the child does not die, he will strike you over the head. For the most part, those who tried to restrict childbearing

failed. They failed in the sense that their children caused them such bitterness that they would say, “It would have been better to have ten children than the one we have.” And look at the families that do not obstruct childbearing but accept whatever God gives them. He may not give you any children at all. You do not know whether He will give you children or not. Does God know whether you can feed one more child, or two, or does He not? Of course He knows. If He knows you cannot, will He give them to you? Is He so cruel? What sort of God do you imagine Him to be? What sort of God? We do not give this the attention it deserves. This is why it is said that the purpose of marriage is the begetting of children. The beautiful prayers in the service of Holy Matrimony also speak of seeing your children round about your table. And the purpose of the first couple was the multiplication of the human race.

And now the final question: Will someone be punished? Certainly he will be punished, because he rejected partnership with God. God wants him as a partner in bringing human beings into the world. He cannot bring forth human beings through birds; He brings forth human beings through human beings. For He desires that souls should come into being—souls that never die. Everything else dies; everything else passes away. Souls alone remain. This is what God desires. And that is the final answer for this evening to the four questions posed during these past few days. We shall stop here, and may God help us.

Σημείωσα τις μέρες αυτές που είμαι εδώ ορισμένα ερωτήματα και θα ήθελα απόψε να απαντήσω σε αυτά, μια και είναι και η τελευταία βραδιά που είμαστε μαζί. Το ένα είναι το εξής: Εφόσον ο Θεός, λέγει, είναι πανταχού παρών, γιατί να εξομολογούμεθα σε ιερέα και να μην εξομολογούμεθα στον Θεό, που είναι πανταχού παρών;

Λοιπόν, η σωτηρία του ανθρώπου είναι μέσα στο πανδοχείο, διά των πανδοχέων. Τι να πεις στον Θεό; Άλλωστε, τι σου είπε ο Θεός; Του είπες ότι εγώ έκλεψα, ότι εγώ εμοίχευσα, και τι σου είπε ο Θεός; «Εντάξει, παιδί μου, τα συγχαρητήριά μου»; Τι σου είπε; Σου είπε ότι «αφέωνταί σοι, συγχωρώ»; Πού στα είπε; Πού; Δεν έχεις καμία απάντηση από τον Θεό. Όταν είσαι άρρωστος, σηκώνεις τα χέρια προς τα πού πέφτει ο γιατρός και λες «Γιατρέ, έχω αυτό και αυτό»; Δεν ξέρεις τι έχεις. Δεν θα φωνάς, αλλά δεν ξέρεις τι έχεις. Θα πας στον γιατρό να σου κάνει την ανάλογο εξέταση, θα σε ψάξει, θα πονέσεις, θα πεις τη γνώμη σου, πώς αισθάνεσαι, θα σου γράψει συνταγή, θα πάρεις τα φάρμακα και θα γιάνεις, θα γίνεις καλά. Εδώ πώς έτσι, ότι σηκώνεις τα χέρια πάνω και είπες «Θεέ μου, ήμαρτον»; Αν δεν γνωρίζεις ποτέ, ποιος θα σου πει, πώς θα σου πει;

Ανοίξετε στο Λευιτικό, στο ΙΓ κεφάλαιο και ΙΔ, θα βρείτε τον Θεό να κάνει τον Ιπποκράτη. Ο Ιπποκράτης είναι ο καθηγητής Ιατρικής. Και τι λέει; Εάν η ουλή, η πληγή, έχει αυτό το χρώμα, θα κάμετε αυτό· αν έχει εκείνο το χρώμα, θα κάμετε αυτό· αν είναι λευκή και βαθιά, θα κάμετε εκείνο· αν είναι έτσι, θα του δώσει χαρτί και θα φύγει μέσα από το χωριό, θα φύγει από την πολιτεία και θα βγει στους αγρούς έξω. Για τις ασθένειες του σώματος, λέγω, όλες είχαν γιατρούς· για τη λέπρα όμως, οι κληρικοί. Γι' αυτό και όταν ο Χριστός μας συνήντησε τους δέκα λεπρούς από μακριά, που του είπανε «Ἰησοῦ ἐπιστάτα, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς», τι τους είπε; «Πηγαίνετε», λέει, «να δείξετε εαυτούς τοις ιερεύσι». Αυτοί πράγματι ξεκίνησαν να πάνε να δείξουν και εν τω υπάγειν, στον δρόμο, έγιναν καλά. Και ένας γύρισε πίσω και είπε ευχαριστώ. Οι δε εννέα;

Είναι η πιο αυστηρή νηστεία μαζί με τη νηστεία του 15 Αυγούστου. Έπειτα, άλλη νηστεία ενομοθετήθη από τον ίδιο τον Χριστό: η Τετάρτη και η Παρασκευή. Είναι δύο πένθιμες ημέρες. Στη μία επωλήθη ο Χριστός και στην άλλη εσταυρώθηκε ο Χριστός. Πώς είναι δυνατόν, λοιπόν, εφόσον είναι πένθιμες οι ημέρες αυτές;

Αλήθεια, αυτό το πράγμα και σωματικώς τον άνθρωπο τον ενδιαφέρει και πνευματικώς τον άνθρωπο τον ενδιαφέρει. Και να μην ενδώσει ποτέ του, γιατί ακούω πολλούς: «Εμείς», λέει, «δεν τρώμε, αλλά», λέει, «πήγαμε εκεί πέρα και βρεθήκαμε, για να μην παρεξηγηθούμε και να μην σκανδαλίσουμε τους ανθρώπους». Σοβαρά; Πώς έτσι έπρεπε να κάνεις; Πρώτα πρώτα, δεν ήξερες ότι εκεί που θα πήγαινες θα είχανε πασχαλινό, θα είχαν αρτύσιμο; Σου λέω πρώτα, δεν ήξερες ότι θα έχουνε; Γιατί να μην το απέφευγες; Δεύτερο, πήγες να τους χαιρετίσεις που εόρταζαν, να τους πεις: «Είσαι τίποτα, όπως έρχομαι εγώ στο δικό σου και εσύ στο δικό μου». Σε ρωτώ: σου σερβίραν αρτύσιμο, έτσι; Δεν έχεις δικαίωμα να τους πεις: «Με συγχωρείτε, δώστε μου ένα ποτό, δώστε μου ένα ποτηράκι εδώ μόνο»;

«Πάρτε το, το έχουμε φτιάξει». «Είναι αρτύσιμο αυτό. Δεν ήρθα σε εβραϊκό σπίτι, ήρθα σε ορθόδοξο σπίτι. Δεν πίστευα ποτέ ότι σήμερα εσείς θα σερβίρετε αρτύσιμο». Σας πω ένα παράδειγμα. Του Αγίου Νικολάου, για παράδειγμα, που είναι μέσα πάντοτε στις 40 ημέρες, σερβίρουν οι Νικολάδες ή οι εορτάζοντες, οι Νικολάκηδες, ως επί το πλείστον αρτύσιμα. Με ποιο δικαίωμα, κύριέ μου, σερβίρεις αρτύσιμα σήμερα; Και με ποιο δικαίωμα θέλεις εγώ να υποχρεωθώ να το πάρω; Ξέρεις αυτός ο Άγιός σου, όταν έπιανε το στήθος της μάνας του Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή να φάει γάλα, από τότε που γεννήθηκε, ότι το έτρωγε μόνον όταν έπεφτε ο ήλιος, το βράδυ; Τι τιμή του κάνεις αυτού του Αγίου; Και πώς εγώ θα το πάρω; Εσύ δεν το καταλαβαίνεις ποιον έχεις Άγιο; Εγώ πώς θα το πάρω;

Και πάλι του είπε: «Ύπαγε πίσω. Εσύ θα προσκυνήσεις τον Θεό σου και αυτόν μόνο θα λατρέψεις». Ο υπ' αριθμόν ένας εχθρός της ψυχής του ανθρώπου είναι η σάρκα. Ο οργανισμός του ανθρώπου είναι ένα καμίνι, το οποίο καίει συνεχώς. Λοιπόν, του ρίξεις καύσιμα μέσα, τι θα γίνει; Και σένα θα σε κάψει και πέτρα θα κάψει. Θα υπήρχε τέτοια διαφθορά, λέτε, εάν υπήρχε νηστεία; Όχι. Κάντε μία τριήμερο νηστεία, θα κλείσουν όλα τα διαφθορεία. Δεν θα έχει τίποτα όρθιο, τίποτα δεν θα μείνει όρθιο, εάν υπάρχει μία τριήμερος νηστεία. Δεν σας λέγω να γίνει ασιτία, σας λέγω να γίνει με διάκριση η νηστεία. Και όχι σαν τους καθολικούς, που βάζουν Τετάρτη ψάρια και την Παρασκευή ψάρια. Θα είναι αστεία. Γιατί, αν τρώτε Τετάρτη και την Παρασκευή ψάρι, τις άλλες κρέας, πότε νηστεύεις; Υπάρχει νηστεία;
