Summary
Entering an Orthodox church is a serious encounter with God that requires spiritual preparation, not merely attendance or lighting a candle. The Prodigal Son and Christ’s sayings about the spiritually dead show that bodily life without communion with Christ is death toward salvation and heaven. Belshazzar’s fall demonstrates that worldly praise, wealth, and apparent security cannot overturn God’s judgment, whose assessment of each person alone finally matters.

We are inside the holy temple of God, which, as you know, is dedicated to Saint Panteleimon the Wonderworker. We might just as well have been in another church dedicated to the memory of the Most Holy Theotokos, to some other martyr, or even to the Lord Himself. Have we ever stopped to consider what this temple is—the place we enter to offer our prayers to God? Have we ever asked why all its furnishings are arranged in this unusual way, and whether there is a reason for all these things? Surely we would have to say no. Most of us know little beyond coming to Church, lighting a candle, and standing there for a while—sometimes even for a long while. I am speaking especially of those who leave under the illusion that all that matters is, “I lit my candle.” Most of us do not know what the Church is, what it offers, or how we ought to make use of it. Perhaps, in saying this, my words are falling into a void.
Perhaps you do know these things—and I pray that you do—but let me repeat them nonetheless. For a person to stand in the temple is a serious matter.
It is a serious matter for a person to enter the temple. He stands to be benefited, but by entering he also assumes a responsibility. Do you know what the divine John Chrysostom says about entering the temple? “Have you entered the temple?” he says. “Then acknowledge yourself worthy.” In other words, did you stop and think about where you are going at this moment, whom you are going to meet there, and whether you truly can stand before the One you are going to meet and within His house? Yet that thought usually never crosses our minds. We may take care to put on something good, clean, and formal; we may comb our hair and inspect ourselves from the front and from the side,
because we are going out among other people—and rightly so. But our preparation goes no further. This is precisely why our attendance at Church usually bears no good fruit. It does not accomplish the purpose for which the Church exists. The church building you see here, whatever its shape may be, has a type that prefigures it in the Old Testament. One must go back and find it. Do you know where? In the Ark. Noah’s Ark is the type that prefigures this Church. Those who entered the Ark and lived according to its rule survived. The flood had no power against them.
One day they emerged upon Ararat. They survived. But proud, self-willed people did not survive. Even the people who built the Ark did not survive. Have you ever wondered what became of the craftsmen who built it? They drowned. Why? Because they thought the Ark was something ridiculous. “That elder Noah is mad. He is wasting money and wearing himself out to build what? An ocean liner on dry land!” Not even the men who built the Ark entered it. Animals were saved; crocodiles, for example, were saved; reptiles were saved; all kinds of other creatures that one might think should not have been saved were saved.
Humanity was not saved. No one else entered except Noah’s family. Noah was five hundred years old when he received the command to build this ocean liner on dry land, and he was six hundred when it was finished. It took a full hundred years to build that Ark, in which wild beasts, birds, and eight human beings were to be saved, for eight people entered the Ark: Noah and his wife; Shem, Ham, and Japheth, their three sons; and their sons’ wives. Three sons and three wives make six, and with the two elders, eight.
The builders took the money, spent it, and enjoyed themselves, but they did not enter. Now someone who does enter may say, “I am not merely someone who contributes toward building the Ark or keeping it standing. I contribute toward the making of a polyeleos chandelier or an icon, but I also enter: I come and light my candle. So how do I compare with those people back then?” If you do what Noah says within the Ark—that is, what the priest tells you—and if you conduct yourself properly and are nourished by what the Ark provides, then, when the flood comes to an end at the Second Coming, or when death comes to a person—for death comes
and brings his work within the Church to an end, and he passes into another world—if, I say, you have lived rightly and have been nourished by what the Ark provides, then you have nothing to fear. You will survive. Otherwise, you will be dead inside the Ark. For if the people in the Ark, or some of the wild beasts, animals, birds, and so forth, had not eaten what was stored within it, what would have happened? They would have died—they would have perished inside the Ark. Then, when the Ark came to rest on Ararat, together with the living they would have had to throw out some dead people and the carcasses of animals and wild beasts. So entering the Ark alone was neither an absolute guarantee nor the only condition of salvation.
It is as we were saying today: “I come to Church. I go to my church—even if I arrive at the third bell, I still go to my church. I may not go every Sunday, but I do go.” That is not enough. You must go to Church, remain within her, do what the Church teaches, carry out what the Church commands, and participate in what the Church offers, so that you may be alive within the Church, within the Ark. Otherwise, you will be dead within the Ark, and simply being in the Church will not benefit you. Can a living person be dead? Certainly—and very much so.
Some houses ought to have flags hanging at half-mast, announcing, “Six of us live here, but not one of us is alive.” Yes, we eat, drink, make merry, hear, see, and sin—but there is no one alive here. There are two kinds of living people: the living who are truly alive, and the living dead.
The father says to the elder son concerning the younger: “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” It was a resurrection from the dead. Was he not still involved with his girlfriends? Precisely—but he was far from his father’s house. He had been cut off. He was alive to sin, but dead to salvation, dead to the Church, and dead to Heaven. In the Apocalypse, the Lord writes to a bishop: “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” You should read these things. So there are living people who are dead when they have no relationship with the Church, with the Mysteries, or with Christ. They are the living dead. Christ gives us another example: a young man asked permission to go and bury his father, but Christ did not grant it. “Leave the dead,” He said, “to bury their own dead.” There are dead men wearing neckties in your village who can bury your dead father. “But you,” He tells him, “come and follow Me.” So there truly are living people who are dead.
It is not enough for me to attend Church, nor is it enough merely to believe. I must act, participate in the Church’s worship, and embrace the way Christ communicates Himself to my life. This Church, then, I repeat, had the Ark as its type in the Old Testament. All who entered the Ark and ate the food stored within it, according to God’s command, survived; the animals survived as well. Holy Scripture does not tell us that even one animal died, or that any one of the eight suffered harm, although the flood lasted approximately one hundred and fifty days. So I now ask myself: when we come here, when we come to Church, do we accomplish our purpose by coming,
and are we truly benefited? That is the question. Tonight I would like to ask myself this, and I want each of you to ask yourself as well. Generally speaking, most Christians attend Church only seasonally. The great feasts bring people to Church—many of them standing outside to receive the light of the Resurrection, or outside to receive the blessing of water at Theophany. They are not regular members of the Church within; they are not at home in the Church, as we might say. Yet they claim to be people of the Lord. “I have Christ within me,” someone says. Who told you that you have Christ within you? Where did you find Christ? From where did you receive Him? Is Christ being handed out somewhere, so that you simply went and took Him? The inn is here. Christ took the man who had fallen among robbers and brought him to the inn.
He entrusted him to the innkeeper and gave the innkeeper the denarii to see to his healing. You are still outside, being bitten by all kinds of things; the robbers of your soul are attacking you and inflicting wounds and sores upon you. How, then, can you heal those wounds outside the Church, outside the inn, outside the clergy, outside the Mysteries, and apart from the two denarii Christ left with the Church? How? Who is deceiving you? Where did you find this Christ whom you claim to have within you? Tell us: where did you come by this treasure, and why do you keep it hidden instead of telling us where it is? If you truly had Christ, you would not boast, “I have Christ within me.” You do not have Christ within you; you are deceived when you say such things. Unfortunately, many people say, “I am better than you.” I did not ask whether you are better than I am. I am asking whether you have any relationship with Christ. That is what I am asking.
You may be a million times better than I am—and I pray that you are. But do you have any relationship with Christ? For the most part, people do not want to hear these things. You see today, especially in our times, how fiercely the Church is attacked, both as an institution and in her administration more generally. Why is she attacked? Why are the Orthodox attacked as the Church?
Are the Roman Catholics attacked? No. Are the Protestants attacked? No. Are the Hindus attacked? They are not. Why, then, are the Orthodox attacked as the Church? Why? Have you ever thought about it? It means that this body of people is causing harm to someone’s designs. That is precisely why they want to eliminate her and remove her from their path. They want these things to disappear; they do not want the bell to ring and remind them of death or remind them of God. That is the reason.
Now we say that we attend Church. But where do we stand in relation to all these things? Thank you. People say these are merely details. Yet Christianity, you know, is not a bare concrete shell. You may find the columns and the rest of the structure and go inside, but you will freeze to death if you move into an unfinished apartment. It is the details of the apartment that make it useful and suitable for you to enter and live in. Otherwise, you will die there. You do not receive forgiveness merely because you hold a prayer rope in your hand and make some gesture resembling the Cross—or rather, stir the air a little—for we do not even make the sign of the Cross properly. Christians do not make it properly. Out of a thousand, perhaps ten will make the sign of the Cross correctly; the rest merely stir a little air. That is not the sign of the Cross. The devil does not fear such a thing, such a caricature of a gesture that we make in front of ourselves. He is not afraid of it, and so he always keeps us in his grasp. I ask, then, what
our position is regarding these things. Christ is long-suffering. We must make good use of God’s long-suffering. You say, “I did not know; I did not hear; no one told me.” Yet there were other things you did not know, and you still went, pursued them, and even paid for them. I see that you learn everything evil, but you do not want to learn anything good. Everything has its reason. Especially today, as educated people living fully in the twentieth century, we must come back down to earth. Since we have landed on the moon, we ought to make sure we also land on the earth, because we reached the moon without ever becoming grounded. We have learned about things that happen outside us, yet we do not know what exists within us. And we will certainly be called to account. God is not going to show partiality to anyone, because
Christ is long-suffering. And you know that the Greek word for long-suffering is a compound word. What does it mean? It means that wrath is held far off. The court has been convened; it has only been postponed. It has not been canceled or abolished—it has been postponed, and it will take place. If it does not take place today, it will take place tomorrow. Open the seventeenth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles and see what Paul says there about the very subject we are discussing. When he spoke to our forefathers in Athens and preached to them for the first time, he said, “Take heed: the times of ignorance God overlooked.” You did not know, did you? You had not heard; no one had told you. From this point onward, however, things change. What you did not know, he says, God “overlooked.” But “now He commands all people everywhere to practice metanoia—to repent.” Why?
“He has appointed a day,” he says—that is, He has fixed a day for each person—“on which He will judge the world in righteousness,” meaning all mankind. I repeat: read chapter seventeen of the Acts of the Apostles quietly at home, and see Paul’s sermon in Athens. It has eternal authority, especially for us. We need not wait for the Second Coming. If I die now, I am already judged, because death is like a photograph that preserves my condition forever. If I am holding my ear at this moment and you photograph me, in the photograph I will always appear holding my ear. So it is, he says, with a person’s death. Hell and Paradise are not simply somewhere else, as foolish people say. Hell begins here, and Paradise begins here.
The life to come is an extension of this life—either into Hell or into Paradise. If I die having repented, having made my confession, and having received Holy Communion, the extension is Paradise; the extension is rest and refreshment. A soul like a dove is entrusted for safekeeping to the treasury called the grave. If I die unrepentant, without confession, without attending Church, with my affairs unsettled, unreconciled with others and refusing to forgive them, the extension is Hell. I hand over a soul like a raven for the grave to keep. And tomorrow, at the word of command, at the voice of the Archangel and the trumpet of God, when mankind rises from the dead, the tombs will open. Whatever we gave them to keep, that is what they will return to us. If I gave them a dove, a dove will come forth. If I gave them a raven, a raven will come forth. Nothing is changed there. It therefore depends on me.
I must make good use of the goodness and patient forbearance of God. Paul speaks of this when he writes to the Romans: “Do you not know that the goodness and patient forbearance of God lead you to metanoia—to repentance?” They help us to repent. Yet we add one day after another and keep saying, “Tomorrow.” When tomorrow becomes today, we say, “Tomorrow.” When the next day becomes today, we again say, “Tomorrow.” What are we doing? We give the present to the devil and the future to Christ. We give Satan what we possess, and promise Christ what we do not possess. But how long will we mock Him? How long will we treat Him with contempt? “How long shall I bear with you?” There is justice. There is love. There is forgiveness. But there is also justice. Christ is like a rider with His feet in two different realms.
One foot is in this world, and upon it are written mercy, patient forbearance, and forgiveness. His other foot is beyond the grave, and upon it is written justice—but only for the person who, in this world, has failed to make good use of God’s patient forbearance and goodness. These days especially help us; they offer us an opportunity both to enter what is called metanoia—repentance—and to guide others toward it. The iconography here is interesting, as is the church itself. This church is not yet as it ought to be, like the new churches we see with their iconography and everything properly arranged. Nevertheless, we enter it, celebrate our services, and are sanctified. If one day Saint John the Forerunner over there is painted in the proper Byzantine manner, there should be an axe at his feet.
It is missing here; the iconographer considered it unnecessary. But Scripture says, “The axe is laid at the root of the tree.” And the One coming after me will take it up and cut away the branches. Do you know what that axe signifies? It is God’s justice, which is presently at rest. God’s justice is not acting today. Let us not be deceived because He does not punish us, does not cut off our noses and ears while we are sinning, and does not catch us in the very act of our sins—our murders, blasphemies, thefts, and frauds. This is because God’s justice is not operating today. But one day He must take up that axe to cut and to clear away. Thank you.
God still holds justice in His hand. Consequently, we have time to repent, to return, and to do what we have failed to do. For if death overtakes us before we have made use of God’s mercy and patient forbearance, we will inevitably fall into the hands of His justice, that other aspect which is also taught and continually recalled here within the Church. Look around at the holy icons. Glory to God, I see an oil lamp hanging and burning before every one of them—before our Most Holy Theotokos, before the Saints, and before Christ. Very well. But tell me: here at the place of the Master, where are the little lamps above, flickering with their light?
Tell me, will you find such a thing in any Orthodox church? I once discussed this with someone, and he said, “It is so the bishop’s mitre will not strike against it. I would place it a little higher, so the bishop’s mitre does not hit it.” Is that why they place no lamp there? No. Here there is mercy; there there is judgment. If you do not set your life in order here, at what are called the Holy Doors; if you do not come here before the new Eve and the new Adam, who stand at their posts so that you may pass within; if you are not reconciled; if you do not come here to receive His Body and Blood “for the remission of sins and eternal life,” then justice will bring you here. And at the judgment there is no mercy—no mercy. That is why no lamp burns there. Everything speaks. There is nothing here that does not speak. Before me I have this piece of metal. What is it?
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What happened? One of the Three came down: Jesus Christ. Yet when He came down here, He also remained above with the Father and the Holy Spirit. And what is this above? It is the stand where we place our candles. We are never abandoned; we remain close to Christ. This too teaches us. Everything teaches—whatever you imagine, whatever you touch, wherever you turn. The priest comes out and censes you. Some people make the sign of the Cross. Others do not even condescend to step down from their stalls when the priest passes to cense them. What is that censer? Tell me, what is the censer? Its three chains are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The bowl below is the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. The burning coal within is Christ, the incense is the Holy Spirit, and the twelve bells are the twelve Apostles. Do you know this? I believe it; do you believe it? Everything speaks, everything reminds us, everything counsels us, and everything warns us. As for the person who is unwilling—not unable, but unwilling—to be reconciled with God here, it would have been better for him never to have been born. Perhaps that sounds harsh, but if a person is condemned to Hell, it would have been better for him never to have been born. The fact that he came here...
...ate a few calves or a few eggplants, or drank however much whisky—none of that amounts to anything if he has lost his immortal soul. A person’s purpose in this world is to gain the world to come. Man did not come into this world merely to live, as people falsely say. He came to die, and he dies in order to live. That life will have no end; this life will have an end. Death is not the final boundary, as some say, but the beginning of another life that will have no end. A person brings nothing when he enters this world, and takes nothing with him when he leaves it. Yet people wrongly seek—often by unlawful means—to make what belongs to others their own.
Everything! Even if I succeed in making what is yours mine, nothing is gained, because it belongs neither to you nor to me. It belongs to Him. We are merely stewards of His world. If a person sits down and reflects deeply on these matters, do you think his life will change? He will begin to see things differently. He will begin to fear, and his legs will go weak, as Belshazzar’s did—if you have read what happened when the hand appeared and wrote upon the plaster. He was drinking before a thousand concubines, and had even brought the sacred chalices from the Temple in Jerusalem and was drinking wine from them. You will have read these things.
People applaud us and flatter us, and we enjoy it and look for it. What do they think of us? What impression did we make? What did you think of our clothes, our apartment, our car, our television? Do not concern yourself with these things—with what the world says or how the world regards you. What does God say about you at this very moment? Unfortunately for us, God has His own measure. He measures in His own way—not as a boyfriend measures his girlfriend or a girlfriend her boyfriend, nor as a dear wife measures her husband or a husband his wife. God has a measure of His own and scales that weigh in His own way. As the king and his company drank, when their revelry had reached its height, the hand appeared above them and began to write. He lost all color in his face; he lost everything. Read about Belshazzar. It is very instructive, so that each person may ask, “My God, what are You saying about me at this moment?”
They were crying, “Long live the king!” Even the queen came and said to him, “Long live the king!” But what good was that now? Can you tell me what those words mean? He summoned the natural philosophers, the wise men, the Chaldeans, and the rest, but none of them could accomplish anything. At last he called Daniel, who was in prison, to interpret the writing for him. Daniel entered and read it: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.” Then he said, “Do you know what this means, O king? Tonight your kingdom was measured in Heaven and found wanting. Your kingdom was weighed in Heaven and found wanting. Tonight your kingdom will be divided in two and handed over to Darius the Persian.” Outside, Darius was laying siege to Babylon.
How secure the Babylonians felt! The king had enough provisions inside for two years, so he thought the enemy could exhaust himself trying. Meanwhile, he feasted with his women and concubines. But the Euphrates River flowed through Babylon. What did the man outside do? He diverted the river to the other side of the city. That night he entered through the riverbed and slaughtered the so-called king like a goat. So what does God say? There are five opinions about every person. Most of you—ninety-five percent—are seeing and hearing me for the first time. If someone sat at the door and asked you, “Tell us your opinion of Panagopoulos,” you would express an opinion.
But even if you expressed it, that opinion would count for nothing. It could send me neither to Hell nor to Paradise. Others who know me, who have heard me and followed my talks many times, would offer an opinion different from yours, since you are hearing me for the first time. But their opinion is also of no use. It sends me neither to Hell nor to Paradise. If my wife and children were asked—those who know me more closely and know my life at home as well as my life outside—they would form yet another opinion of me, different both from yours and from that of the others. Yet their opinion would never go beyond the paper on which it was written. And if I were to write my own certificate describing who I think I am—since I know other things about my life that not even my wife, my children, or my closest coworkers know...
...nor my listeners—then I too would give a fourth opinion, a fourth certificate about myself. But that also amounts to nothing. It is useful neither for Hell nor for Paradise. Whose opinion, then, will matter? His opinion will matter. It is not spoken by you, by others, by my family, or by me. It is spoken by Him about me at this very moment. That is what should concern a person. You may have covered something up, hidden it, escaped the consequences; the public prosecutor may not have caught you, nor your wife, your husband, or anyone else—but He has caught you. Better to be exposed by six hundred prosecutors in this world than to be exposed by Christ. Nothing is hidden; nothing is concealed from anyone. All things are naked and laid open.
No one will escape. Therefore, each of us should take care to do good work upon himself. In old churches, above the Holy Doors, among the other things depicted there, one also saw an eye, an ear, and a pen. The eye of God sees everything, the ear of God hears everything, and the hand of God records everything. Understand this: you will not escape, however much you may wish to. If you do something good, two witnesses record it. If you do something evil, three record it. When you do good, your conscience and your angel record it.
When you do evil, your conscience, your angel, and your devil record it. Even if your angel wished to say it did not happen, and your conscience tried to conceal it, Satan would appear. Could you lie then? You might say, “It did not happen that way,” but it did. And Christ, because He is just, will render justice even to the devil. Satan does not record the good, because of his malice. The good is recorded only by the conscience and the angel. That is why I told you that some things are recorded by three witnesses and others by two. I speak in this way and offer these examples so that we may turn our attention back upon ourselves. For the most part, we have become outward-looking. We look at others and, because they are worse than we are, we dare to place ourselves among the righteous, perhaps even alongside Zacchaeus. Yet we do not even do what he did.
I once spoke with a woman who had undergone her eleventh abortion. I said, “Have you no fear of God at all?” She replied, “You should see the others. Compared with them, I am a dove. One woman, Mr. Panagopoulos, has had twenty-three.” And so she felt at peace, thinking she still had room for twelve more.
Do you understand? Do you understand? We have learned to judge ourselves by comparing ourselves with those who are worse, not those who are better, and that is where we go wrong. If, then, we do not use the time of God’s goodness and patient forbearance for good, God will have done His part, but we will have proved unworthy. That is the essential point. A little earlier I spoke to you about the Holy Doors.
Have you ever wondered why it is called the Beautiful Gate—the Holy Doors? What is so beautiful about it? Do you know what this iconostasis before us is? Do you know what Christ is doing there, and what the Most Holy Theotokos is doing? I told you earlier: they are the new Eve and the new Adam, because behind them stand the old Eve and the old Adam. This doorway was not open; it was closed. Through their disobedience, that first couple had closed Paradise, and we no longer had communion with God. Then Christ was crucified outside the camp, outside the city of Jerusalem. And what was the first miracle that took place at the Cross? As you know, the veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom.
What does that mean? What do You wish to teach us through it, my God? They crucify You outside, on Golgotha, and inside the Temple the veil is torn and the way opens. What are You teaching us? “I have restored your communion with God. I died so that you might enter again and have communion with God.” Thus, the Beautiful Gate symbolizes the opening that Christ made through His blood and His Crucifixion, so that man might once again have communion with God. The enmity between man and God was brought to an end—not any enmity of God toward man. As the divinely inspired John Chrysostom says, God is never hostile. We turned our backs on God and went away, while God runs after us.
“Your mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,” says the verse from the Prophet that we hear here in the evenings. Even today, mercy runs after every person and cries out: “Stop! Come, let Me speak to you; it is for your good. Do not run away or wander farther off, or the wolf will devour you.” But man pays no attention. You also know the image of Christ leaving the ninety-nine sheep and descending into the ravines to find the one that was lost. When He finds it, He places it on His shoulders and returns rejoicing because He has found it. This is also a parable in the fifteenth chapter, together with the parable of the Prodigal Son and the parable of the lost coin.
Have you ever reflected on this divine dispensation? Many people ask, “Why does Christ not find this person or that person?” It depends on the person’s will; he does not want to be found. For the shepherd to find the sheep, the sheep must also want to be found. If it does not, the shepherd cannot find it. A lamb gets lost, wanders off, eats its fill, curls up somewhere, and falls asleep. Will the shepherd ever find it? No. But if the lamb bleats, he will find it. We, however, do not bleat; that is, we do not want the sheepfold. We do not want to return. Its atmosphere feels suffocating to us. We do not like prohibitions; we do not like hearing, “You shall not.” “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not dishonor”—not, not, not. We dislike that. We demand that Christ change His “no” into “yes” before we will follow Him.
But then the Gospel would no longer be Christ’s Gospel. Why do people today reject the Church? Why do they not want to hear sermons? Why do they not want to confess? Why do they not want to return? Because the Gospel reproves their lawless way of life. It reproves the belly that refuses to fast and the unlawful bed, which was given for the begetting of children, while they seek only the chamber of pleasure without accepting the labor of bringing children into the world. God said, “Be fruitful and multiply”; He did not say, “Pursue pleasure.” We do not want that from God. God, then, is never hostile. He wants everyone to come to Him, but each person must also want to come. My beloved, I will tell you something. Keep at least this, even if you can retain nothing else from what I have said or will say: God...
I do not know what smaller measure of time I could name: in a fraction of a second, God has the power to destroy everything that exists—material, spiritual, and composed of both—all the galaxies, the heavens, the seas, everything. In a fraction of a second, it could all disappear and be created again billions of times better than it is now. Such is the omnipotence of God. Yet this same almighty God cannot set a person right when that person does not want it. There His hands are bound. “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” The One who made you without first asking you cannot save you without your consent. And so He bears patiently with you.
You remain far away. If you have no relationship with Him and have not tasted His supper, no one else is to blame. The priests are not to blame. The Church is not to blame. The Gospel is not to blame. We ourselves are to blame. Look closely at those who oppose everything Christ has established for the salvation of mankind—the Church, the Ark, and the rest. They are people who have, as the saying goes, fouled their own nest, and they do not want to come into the light. I will tell you two incidents. The first is this. Naturalists are people who study the characteristics of different birds, animals, and so forth. Do you know what they say about the elephant?
When an elephant, with its trunk and all its bulk, comes upon clear, sparkling water, it does not drink. What do you think it does? With its trunk it stubbornly stirs up the water and makes it muddy.
Why? Has anyone asked why? Because in the clear water it can see its trunk. It sees its own ugliness, and it does not want to look at that ugliness.
That is what the Church does: it shows me my ugliness. That is what the clergy do: they remind us of our sins and of death. That is what happens in Holy Confession. The filth becomes visible, and because of our pride, we have no desire to look at it.
What can I do? The Church is not to blame, nor are these things to blame. We and our sins are to blame. Think about it, and you will see. The second story is said to have taken place in ancient Corinth, when the city was at the height of its corruption. Among its many courtesans and corrupt women was one named Lais. During her lifetime, a certain kind of small mirror was invented. Today such mirrors are sold for next to nothing at kiosks, and nearly every man or woman carries one in a pocket. In those days, however, owning a mirror was a very great thing. Although she earned her money through sin, and earned it abundantly...
She paid an astronomical sum and became the first woman to own a mirror. She wanted the other women around her to admire her, and she was flattered that she, the great lady, possessed such a marvelous thing. The next day, however, she took the mirror and smashed it into a million pieces. She broke it in a rage. When the others saw this, they could hardly believe their eyes. Such an object, purchased for so much money—how could she do such a thing? One of the shrewder women who attended her managed to draw the reason out of her. Had she gone mad, or was there some other explanation? What do you think she learned? Lais had broken the mirror because it had dared to show her a wrinkle beginning to furrow her face. And you, dear listener...
Was the mirror to blame, Lais, or was the wrinkle to blame? What fault lies with the preacher? Is the preacher to blame, or are your sins? What fault lies with the spiritual father? “He will not let me receive Holy Communion.” Is it really the spiritual father who will not let you? Why does he not permit it? Does he have a personal grudge against you? It is because you kill these children and do not show metanoia, repentance. Why should he give you Holy Communion when you first reject Christ Himself? Why should he commune you? For what reason? You do not accept Christ. If you did accept Him, you would say, “Let whatever happens happen, even if I die.” Have you ever heard of anyone dying for this reason? Have you heard of a woman dying because the doctor said no, yet she refused to accept that answer and bore children? Have you ever heard of it? No, you have not. This is precisely where God reveals Himself—where medical science is powerless and man is powerless. A woman says, “I have had two Caesarean sections and cannot have a third.” Mrs. Kennedy had six—six, and thanks be to God.
A woman connected with Father Poropoulos at Saint Spyridon in Pangrati had undergone two Caesarean sections. Her doctor, Fantzarakakis, had told her otherwise, yet afterward she gave birth naturally six times. She has now fallen asleep in the Lord. Have you put God to the test in faith? It cannot always be only scalpels and medical science. These things are good, but they must be joined with God. When we do not want God, we push Him aside. What are we doing? Why blame the priest who tells you that what you are doing to your child is wrong? God is powerful, and He will show you. “You know, Father; you know, Doctor—I will not abort it. Christ has seen it as my child.” And there he is now, a fine young man, tall and strong. These are personal and beautiful stories. “The doctor told me so, but did God tell me, ‘It is not your child’?” And there the child is now, growing tall. Think about it. Have we ever truly trusted God? God is not small. A Christian must know that he has an almighty God, a God who can do all things. Yet He cannot alter the human will. He cannot change what a person chooses to want.
Free will is sovereign. And this is the point: the almighty God—though the human example I gave cannot begin to express God’s omnipotence—will not violate it. That is why He shows patient endurance and waits. One thing happens, then another: wars, fears, cancer, hunger, illnesses, and every sort of trial. Yet man still refuses. As long as man refuses, even God cannot force him. Therefore, if man is not reconciled to God and does not come to know Him here, at the gate called Beautiful, it will be impossible afterward. Someone says, “But I am a good person. I do good deeds and help others. Will I be lost?” If you do not pass through here, you certainly will be lost. There is no other road. When this church is completed properly, the Archangel over there will be shown holding a sword.
The other Archangel on this side will not be holding carnations; he too will have a sword in his hand. Do you know whom he is warning as we remove the choir stalls? He is warning you: “You cannot enter from here.” “Then where are we supposed to go?” “Through there.” Not from this side, nor from the other. “I will make my own way to Christ,” someone says. Once a Freemason was speaking with me. I asked him, “How did you manage to escape Nasser?” This was at the time of the military revolution in Egypt. “How did you manage it?” He took out a Masonic certificate and showed it to me. “Because of this,” he said, “all doors are open to me”—meaning all the border posts. “Except the door of Heaven,” I told him. He gestured dismissively and said, “We will manage there too.” Twenty days later, he committed suicide. He threw himself from the third floor in Kolonaki. His name, if I remember correctly, was Androulakakis, and he had been a political candidate in Crete.
“We will manage there too.” But here we will not manage by our own devices, because there are Angels and Archangels, and this is what they remind us of. There is one great door in the center, and that door can receive everyone. Someone once asked, “This opening that was made, which reconciled man to God—was it a large opening? How large was it?” The elder answered, “It was made large enough for the greatest sinner to pass through.” Only sins that remain without metanoia, repentance, and without Holy Confession remain unforgiven. All the others are forgiven as soon as you say, “Bless me, Father; yes, I did it”—if only we admit it. Perhaps you are afraid, but I could take upon my back all the sins committed since the time of Cain, the murderer of his brother...
All the sins of criminals, unbelievers, and atheists, from then until the end of the age. If only I say, “Bless me, Father. My God, You came into the world for us sinners. Forgive me; I committed these things.” Only the sins we cunningly hold on to remain—the sins we imagine we will somehow pay off, erase, cause others to forget, or allow to decay and rust away. Many among us have confessed all the little things, but when they come to the great things, they leave them unconfessed: injustices they have committed, frauds they have carried out, property they have wrongfully taken, pensions they have deceitfully obtained from the state, and other forms of dishonesty. You must give them back. Do you think you will escape the sin? Satan will keep his hold on it.
“You stole from the tax office,” he will tell you. “This is how much you stole from the state.” “I did not steal it,” you will say. But you owed this much and paid only that much. Why did you commit the fraud? It will be brought before you. God did not say, “You shall not steal from individuals, but you may steal from the state.” That is absurd. He said, “You shall not steal.” Wherever you steal from, you are stealing. Do you know how many such things there are? How many people possess things that belong to others—books, objects, tools—and those very things cry out against them? If Christ entered some of our homes and commanded, “Let everything belonging to another, everything unjustly acquired, be taken away,” some homes would be emptied. They would be emptied of furniture and of one thing after another, because nothing there was acquired through honest labor, as God requires. Yet He waits for us, while we imagine that everything is in order. Some people think that certain sins...
They think the sins of which they are ashamed can be paid off by doing good works. They cannot be paid off; they are forgiven as a gift. Only metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession can set matters right. If you want to understand this, read the opening chapters of the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation. There Christ, using Saint John the Theologian as His secretary, writes to the bishops of Asia. To all but one of them, I believe, He writes: “Repent. You have these virtues, but you also have these faults. Repent. You have these things, but this is what you have become. Repent.” He did not say, “Pay the debt yourself.” When the Honorable Forerunner began his preaching, he said, “Repent.” He did not say, “Perform charitable works.” He said, “Repent.”
When Christ began preaching after the Honorable Forerunner, He said the same thing: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,” and He added a few more words: “And believe in the Gospel.” Put up the first chapter of Mark, if you can find it. In other words, believe in the Gospel. Do you know what the Gospel is? Is it the book the priest reads? No—the Gospel is Christ Himself. The book speaks of the good news. That is why it is called the Gospel: it proclaims the good news that the Son of God became the Son of the Virgin in order to save mankind. So a person must come here. And what will he say here? “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” And then he will say, “Save us, O Son of God.” For whom are these words said? For them? No, for us. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, may the Savior save us. And again: “Save us, O Son of God.” Outside Christ there is no salvation. The Theotokos intercedes, and Christ saves. So when a person humbles himself...
When he comes here and puts his life in order through the Mystery of Holy Confession, he will come forward, and Christ will offer him His Body and Blood. And what does the priest say? “For the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” When he gives you the antidoron, the blessed bread after the Divine Liturgy, what does he say? “May the blessing of the Lord and His mercy come upon you.” But if you take it by yourself from the candle stand, you do not hear that blessing. If you receive the Great Agiasmos, the great blessing of water, are you thereby saved? And without it, are you condemned to Hell?
If you receive the Great Agiasmos, are you saved, and without it condemned to Hell? No, because it is sanctification; it is not salvation. Here, however, the priest says: “For the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” It is one thing to be sanctified and prepared to receive, so that I may be saved, and another thing to be saved. When, for example, ten or twenty people come forward and receive Holy Communion, and the priest goes back into the altar, places the commemorative particles into the chalice, and then turns and comes out again, what does he say when he emerges?
“Save, O God, Your people, and bless Your inheritance.” What is this inheritance, and who are the people? Is it the chanter who did not come down to receive Holy Communion? Is it the man dozing at the candle stand, supposedly helping Saint George, who does not come forward? Or is it the man who mocks and says, “What did they go up to receive Communion for? Look how solemn he has become—and he received Communion only the other day! Does he think he is a saint?” Which of them is meant? Those who received Holy Communion. They are Christ’s people, and they are His inheritance, because they have become one with Christ. The one who eats His flesh and drinks His Blood has become Christ’s brother. “He abides in Me, and I in him,” and, “I will raise him up at the last day.” So those five or ten people are the ones He calls His people and His inheritance. This is Your inheritance. For the Kingdom of Heaven is not wages earned for work; it is an inheritance. And who inherits? Friends, acquaintances, workers, hired servants? No. Brothers—the brothers inherit.
It is a Kingdom, and a kingdom is inherited by the children of the King. To become a child of the King, I must exchange this blood of Adam for the Blood of Christ. I must receive the Blood of the King within me, so that I may become a child of the King and have a rightful share in the Kingdom of Heaven. If, then, this reconciliation does not take place here—if I do not repent and make Holy Confession—I will not be able to sit at the table of the fatted calf here. I am the prodigal son. The prodigal son must repent, decide to return, openly confess his repentance, and say, “I have sinned against heaven and before you.” Then his garment—the filthy garment of his soul—must be changed. We change our underclothes because we want them to be clean, yet we never remove the filthy undergarments of the soul. Only then will he hear, “Come and partake of the fatted calf.” This is how communion and kinship with God are established. We are all prodigals, because we all sin. One sins a little and another a great deal, but we live far from God. Yet when we repent...
When we openly declare our metanoia—our repentance—through Holy Confession, then we will have the right to come forward and partake of the fatted calf. And what will the result be? The forgiveness of sins and eternal life. We become brothers of Christ and children of God. Those who do not receive Holy Communion should not even say the “Our Father,” you know, because they are not brothers of Christ. If I have a Father in heaven, then Christ must be my brother. If Christ is not my brother, where did I find this Father in heaven? People say that God is the Father of all mankind and that all human beings are children of God. That is wrong. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God.” A human being is God’s creature, His creation; that alone does not make him His child.

Από εμένα μπορεί να είσαι, και εύχομαι να είσαι, ένα εκατομμύριο φορές. Με τον Χριστό έχεις καμία σχέση; Οι άνθρωποι, ως επί το πλείστον, δεν θέλουν να τα ακούνε αυτά τα πράγματα. Ακούτε σήμερα, κατ’ εξοχήν στις μέρες μας, πόσο βάλλεται η Εκκλησία, σαν θεσμός και γενικότερα σαν διοίκηση, πόσο βάλλεται. Γιατί βάλλεται; Και γιατί βάλλονται οι Ορθόδοξοι ως Εκκλησία;
ο Χριστός μακροθυμεί. Και ξέρετε, είναι σύνθετος η λέξη. Τι θα πει μακροθυμία; Μακριά τον θυμό. Έγινε το δικαστήριο, όχι ανεβλήθη, δεν ματαιώθηκε, δεν εξαλείφθηκε· ανεβλήθη, θα γίνει. Αν δεν έγινε σήμερα, θα γίνει αύριο. Ανοίξετε το 17ο κεφάλαιο των Πράξεων των Αποστόλων να δείτε τι λέγει ο Παύλος εκεί γι’ αυτό το θέμα που μιλάμε τώρα. Όταν μίλησε στους παππούληδές μας στην Αθήνα, είναι εκεί που τους είπε το πρώτο κήρυγμα, λέει: «Προσέξτε, τους χρόνους της αγνοίας υπεριδών ο Θεός». Δεν ξέρατε, έτσι; Δεν είχατε ακούσει, δεν σας είπε κανένας. Από εδώ και πέρα όμως τα πράγματα αλλάζουν. Ό,τι δεν ξέρατε, λέει, «υπεριδών». «Τανύν παραγγέλλει πάσι μετανοείν». Γιατί;
Σε όλες τις Ορθόδοξες Εκκλησίες, να μου πείτε, θα βρείτε κάτι; Συζητούσα κάποτε μια μέρα και μου λέει: «Να μην χτυπήσει η Μίτρα του Δεσπότη. Θα τον βάλω εγώ παραπάνω λιγάκι, να μην χτυπήσει η Μίτρα του Δεσπότη». Γι' αυτό δεν βάζουν εκεί; Ούτε. Εδώ είναι έλεος, εκεί είναι κρίση. Εάν δεν τακτοποιηθείτε εδώ, στην Ωραία αυτή λεγομένη Πύλη, εάν δεν έρθετε εδώ ενώπιον της νέας Εύας και του νέου Αδάμ, που κρατάνε τα πόστα για να περάσετε μέσα, εάν δεν συμβιβαστείτε, εάν δεν έρθετε εδώ να πάρετε το σώμα και το αίμα του «προς άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν αιώνιον», θα σας φέρει η δικαιοσύνη εδώ. Και στην κρίση δεν υπάρχει έλεος, δεν υπάρχει έλεος. Γι' αυτό δεν καίει. Όλα ομιλούν, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα που δεν μιλάει εδώ. Έχω μπροστά μου αυτό το σίδερο. Τι είναι αυτό;
Μένεις μακριά. Αν δεν έχεις σχέση μαζί του και δεν εγεύθης το δείπνο του, αυτό είναι διότι δεν φταίνε. Δεν φταίει κανείς. Δεν φταίνε οι παπάδες. Δεν φταίει η Εκκλησία. Δεν φταίει το Ευαγγέλιο. Φταίμε εμείς οι ίδιοι. Και παρακολουθήστε τους ανθρώπους οι οποίοι είναι εναντίον όλων αυτών που έχει ο Χριστός για τη σωτηρία των ανθρώπων, την Εκκλησία, την Κιβωτό κλπ. Είναι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι έχουν λερωμένο, κατά το δη λεγόμενον, τη φωλιά τους και δεν θέλουν να έρχονται στο φως. Θα σας πω δύο περιστατικά. Το ένα είναι το εξής. Οι φυσιοδίφαι, φυσιοδίφαι λέγονται αυτοί που καταπιάνονται με τις ιδιότητες διαφόρων πουλιών, διαφόρων ζώων κλπ., κλπ. Ξέρετε τι λέγουν για τον ελέφαντα;
Έρθει εδώ, τακτοποιηθεί με το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως, θα έρθει εδώ και ο Χριστός τότε του προσφέρει το σώμα του και το αίμα του. Και τι λέει ο ιερεύς; «Εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν αιώνιον». Όταν σου δίνει το αντίδωρο, τι λέει; «Ευλογία Κυρίου και έλεος έλθοι εφ’ υμάς». Και αν το πάρεις από το παγκάρι μοναχός σου, δεν ακούς τότε την ευλογία. Αν πάρεις μεγάλο αγιασμό, σώζεσαι; Δίχως αυτό κολάζεσαι;
πάρεις μεγάλο αγιασμό σώζεσαι, δώσε ώστε κολλάζει. Γιατί είναι αγιασμός, δεν είναι σωτηρία. Εδώ λέει: «Εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν αιώνιον». Άλλο αγιάζω, προετοιμάζω για να λάβω, για να σωθώ, και άλλο σώζω. Όταν προσέλθουνε, επί παραδείγματι, δέκα-είκοσι και κοινωνήσουν, και γυρίζει ο πάτερ μέσα και βάζει μέσα τις μερίδες και τα λοιπά, και ξαναγυρίζει, τι λέει έξω όταν βγει;
